Ep. 163. Wanda Maximoff full MCU timeline · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:19
Hello nerds, comic fans, Marvel geeks and everyone in between.
• 0:24
It is Megan from Vigilante Vibes, and today I want to talk
• 0:28
about a character that is so universally loved, and if you
• 0:32
  don't love her, that's a red flag.
• 0:35
So today I want to talk about Wanda Max Moff, AKA the Scarlet
• 0:39
Witch. But usually I talk about the
• 0:41
comics. Today I want to talk about her
• 0:43
timeline in the MCU, which has been nothing short of fantastic,
• 0:48
but there's been some hiccups as well.
• 0:51
But yeah, I want to talk about all about her in the MCU,
• 0:54
starting from her very first appearance all the way to where
• 0:57
we are now. So even though Wanda Maximoff,
• 1:03
AKA the Scarlet Witch, didn't show up the MCU until Avengers
• 1:06
Age of Ultron, she ended up with one of the most complex and
• 1:10
compelling arcs of the whole franchise.
• 1:13
In the comics, Wanda has flipped between hero and villain more
• 1:17
than once, and that's carried over into the MCU.
• 1:20
Her powers, rooted in chaos magic, are incredibly strong but
• 1:24
dangerously unpredictable, and the films have done a great job
• 1:29
showing that constant push and pull.
• 1:33
Wanda was first introduced as a villain, but over time we got to
• 1:37
see the pain and the trauma behind her actions.
• 1:41
Her powers were awakened by HYDRA, but really she was just
• 1:45
trying to protect the people she cared about.
• 1:47
Her journey from villain to hero and eventually back to villain
• 1:51
again is rather heartbreaking. As of Doctor Strange in the
• 1:56
Multiverse Madness, she's presumed dead, though it's
• 1:59
anyone's guess if or when she'll return to MCU.
• 2:02
But I think we can all agree together as a fandom that she,
• 2:07
the character, is not dead, but a variant of her is, so I'll get
• 2:14
to that. While Wanda herself wasn't
• 2:17
around in ancient times, the roots of the Scarlet Witch go
• 2:20
way back. According to the lore, the demon
• 2:23
Scython showed up on Earth in prehistoric times and carved his
• 2:26
dark magic into the walls of a temple on Mount Wondergore.
• 2:30
He even left behind a throne meant to stay empty until the
• 2:34
Scarlet Witch came along. Not Wanda, the Scarlet Witch,
• 2:39
someone with the power to reshape and destroy all of
• 2:42
reality. Nothing major happens at Mount
• 2:45
Wondagore right away, but eventually, at some unknown
• 2:48
point in ancient history, that changes.
• 2:50
Even though the Scarlet Witch hasn't appeared yet, the dark
• 2:54
magic Scython carved into the mountain gets copied into a
• 2:59
terrifying book called The Dark Cold.
• 3:01
This book is packed with forbidden spells and has the
• 3:04
power to corrupt anyone that uses it.
• 3:07
It ends up playing a huge role in Wanda's story later on.
• 3:12
Fast forward to modern times in Eastern Europe, where the
• 3:15
country of Sokovia is being torn apart by war.
• 3:19
The details of who's fighting or why aren't really explained, but
• 3:23
what matters is that the Maximoff family, Wanda, her twin
• 3:26
brother Pietro, and their parents are caught right in the
• 3:29
middle of it. To take their minds off of the
• 3:32
chaos around them, the family watches old American sitcoms
• 3:35
together and also helps them learn English.
• 3:40
These shows become a source of comfort for young Wanda.
• 3:43
For a for a little bit, just for a little bit.
• 3:47
Then everything changes. In March of 1999, a missile
• 3:50
crashes into their home. It doesn't explode right away,
• 3:53
but the impact kills Wanda and Pietra's parents, leaving the
• 3:56
twins trapped under rubble, staring at a bomb for what feels
• 4:00
like forever. It was actually days at a time.
• 4:03
They sat there and watched the bomb that had Tony Stark's name
• 4:07
on it. So that's, that's quite an
• 4:11
origin hatred right there. That moment sticks with Wanda,
• 4:15
not just because of the trauma, but because of the logo on the
• 4:18
missile. Like I said, Stark Industries,
• 4:22
she doesn't know who Tony Stark is yet, but from that day on,
• 4:25
she and Pietro are determined to find a way to get stronger and
• 4:28
protect themselves and their country from ever feeling that
• 4:32
powerless again. Growing up in a war zone and
• 4:34
losing their parents left Wanda and Pietro feeling powerless, so
• 4:38
they started searching for any way to protect themselves and
• 4:41
the people they care about. Unfortunately, they ended up in
• 4:44
the hands of a Hydra cell where cruel experiments are using the
• 4:49
space stone were done on them by Baron Strucker.
• 4:53
The results were clear, Pietro gained super speed while Wanda
• 4:57
slowly started to develop her powers tied to chaos magic,
• 5:01
though at first they were very limited.
• 5:04
Wanda never forgot that Stark Industries bomb that killed her
• 5:07
family, and she held a grudge against Tony Stark for the pain
• 5:11
caused when The Avengers attacked Hydra base and Sokovia,
• 5:15
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver faced off against Earth's
• 5:18
Mightiest Heroes for the first time.
• 5:20
Wanda's power was more about illusions and messing with
• 5:24
people's mind rather than raw strength, and she managed to
• 5:27
mess with a few heroes mentally, Stark included.
• 5:32
His vision of a destructive future eventually led him to
• 5:35
create Ultron. After The Avengers took down the
• 5:39
Hydra cell, Wanda and Pietro teamed up with Ultron, not
• 5:42
knowing his real plan. Ultron convinced them that he
• 5:46
wanted to build a better world, and the twins helped him get the
• 5:49
vibranium he needed to build his powerful new body.
• 5:54
When Ultron finishes building up his final body, he puts the Mind
• 5:59
Stone in it as the last piece. But thanks to the stone, Wanda
• 6:04
can finally read Ultron's mind and realizes he plans to wipe
• 6:08
out all of humanity, which includes her.
• 6:11
So she and Pietro switch sides, help The Avengers stop Ultron,
• 6:16
who's trying to turn part of Sokovia into a giant meteor.
• 6:20
During the fight, Pietro dies a huge blow for Wanda, who's
• 6:24
already lost so much. After Ultron was defeated and
• 6:29
with no family left, Wanda officially becomes an Avenger
• 6:32
because, like, what else do you have going on?
• 6:35
Not long after, the team tracks down Crossbones and Lagos, but
• 6:39
he's wearing a bomb vest. Wanda uses her magic to throw
• 6:42
him away from Captain America, but he crashes into a nearby
• 6:45
building, causing a huge explosion and serious collateral
• 6:49
damage. This incident leads to the
• 6:52
creation of the Sokovia Accords, which require all superheroes to
• 6:56
register with the government. Because Wanda was involved in
• 7:01
the explosion, she's kept at The Avengers Compound, where she
• 7:05
grows close to Vision. Then she's rescued by Team
• 7:09
Captain America and ends up siding with them against the
• 7:13
Accords, putting her at odds with her closest friends and
• 7:17
even her future love. As Thanos moves closer to
• 7:21
getting all six Infinity Stones, The Avengers make their last
• 7:24
stand within Wakanda. Since Vision has the Mind Stone
• 7:28
embedded in him, Sheree, with help from Banner and Stark,
• 7:31
tries to safely remove it before Thanos can grab it.
• 7:35
But things don't go as planned. And what happens next is it was
• 7:39
it was heartbreaking. Vision convinces Wanda that
• 7:42
removing the stone will take too long, so Wanda does the
• 7:46
unthinkable. She kills the one she loves in
• 7:49
order to save the universe, but Thanos just uses the Time Stone
• 7:54
to rewind. That moment rips the stone
• 7:56
straight out of Vision's head, right in front of her.
• 7:58
Vision dies again, this time painfully, and Wanda has to live
• 8:03
through the nightmare twice. Then Thanos snaps his fingers,
• 8:06
and Wanda is one of the people who disappears into the dust.
• 8:11
After The Avengers travel back in time to collect all the
• 8:14
stones. Bruce Banner used them to bring
• 8:15
everyone back. Wanda returns, desperate for
• 8:19
revenge on the final battlefield at The Avengers complex.
• 8:24
She goes head to head with Thanos, telling him that he's
• 8:27
taken everything from her, her anger and power nearly to feed
• 8:31
him, showing off just how much she's grown.
• 8:34
And I want to say, like, how petty is he for saying, I don't
• 8:37
even know who you are? I I dug that.
• 8:41
After Thanos was finally defeated, Wanda feels more alone
• 8:44
than ever. Drowning in grief, she ends up
• 8:48
in Westview, New Jersey, where she and Vision had once planned
• 8:52
to build a life together. Having lost her family and loved
• 8:55
twice, her pain causes her to trap the entire town in a
• 8:59
powerful HECS. Inside the HECS Westview becomes
• 9:03
a never ending sitcom set with the real people stuck playing
• 9:07
roles while still knowing they're trapped.
• 9:09
As sad as it is, it's also a really terrible thing for those
• 9:13
caught inside. Wanda even creates a fake
• 9:16
version of Vision and two kids with her magic, only to lose
• 9:21
them when the Hex is finally broken.
• 9:23
After taking down the villainous witch act of the Harkness, Wanda
• 9:26
unlocks a whole new level of power and finally becomes the
• 9:29
legendary Scarlet Witch, way stronger than anything she's
• 9:33
experienced before. But losing her magically created
• 9:38
husband and kids hits her so hard and she turns to The Dark
• 9:42
Cold, a book filled with Sithon's dark magic.
• 9:46
The book feeds off her emotional pain and vulnerability as dark
• 9:50
magic things tend to do. Using the Dark Cold, Wanda comes
• 9:54
up with a plan to find her kids, Billy and Tommy.
• 9:58
Even though they don't exist in her reality, which is Earth 616,
• 10:02
they do exist in other universes.
• 10:04
So she tries to capture America Chavez, who can jump between
• 10:08
dimensions to help her track down her children.
• 10:12
Meanwhile, Doctor Strange asks Wanda for help, unaware that
• 10:16
she's the one putting Chavez in danger.
• 10:19
What follows is a wild and destructive chase across
• 10:23
multiple realities, but not not as many realities as it should
• 10:27
have been for a for a movie called Multiverse of Madness.
• 10:31
We saw like 3 so that's just. I just needed someone else to
• 10:37
know that Wanda's power is even stronger than Doctor strangers,
• 10:41
forcing him to fix up America Chavez and run.
• 10:44
Instead of fighting her, the Scarlet Witch leaves a trail of
• 10:47
destruction in her wake, wrecking Kumar Taj and killing
• 10:50
the powerful Illuminati of Earth 838.
• 10:53
While the Dark Cold partly fuels her, Wanda's fully gone down the
• 10:58
villain path in a way that no one has really seen before.
• 11:01
Eventually, Chavez and Strange figure out that the only person
• 11:05
who can stop Wanda is Wanda. Chavez opens a portal between
• 11:10
the evil version of Wanda and her kids, and seeing how
• 11:13
terrified her children are, snaps Wanda back to reality.
• 11:18
Using her chaos magic, Wanda destroys Mount Wanda Gore and
• 11:23
the Dark Cold, bringing the whole place down on herself and
• 11:26
ending her own life in the process.
• 11:29
When Agatha all along dropped, a whole lot of fans thought it
• 11:32
might lead to Scarlet Witch coming back.
• 11:34
Which is fair because that was a very Scarlet Witch coded show.
• 11:38
She was, let's be honest, the the she was a main character.
• 11:43
Somehow I think the entire audience watched it thinking
• 11:46
we're going to end up seeing Scarlet Witch.
• 11:49
Agatha spent her time terrified of Scarlet Witch.
• 11:53
Billy. He's just, he was just finding
• 11:55
out about Scarlet Witch before he met with Agatha.
• 11:57
So she was fresh on his mind too.
• 11:59
So she was a very big presence in the show, but she stayed dead
• 12:04
through the whole show, leaving her return up in the air.
• 12:08
Kevin Feige has hinted that she'll come back eventually.
• 12:11
Elizabeth Olsen is totally down to play Wanda again, according
• 12:15
to her. If they figure out how to bring
• 12:17
her back, you know, that's, that's the whole thing.
• 12:21
It has to be done. Well, even though Akthalong
• 12:25
didn't bring Wanda back, it reintroduced a character who
• 12:27
might be the key to it. Billy, one of Wanda's sons.
• 12:31
Well, it actually introduced two sons, but you know, Tommy was
• 12:35
there at the end, but Billy was the main character.
• 12:39
He basically reincarnated as William Kaplan, who's searching
• 12:44
for his twin, Tommy. By the end of the series, Billy
• 12:47
has the power to bring Tommy's soul back into another body, and
• 12:51
his search for his brother is just getting started.
• 12:54
He could potentially do the same for Wanda's soul, but that might
• 12:58
mean someone else would have to play her, which I know.
• 13:03
Another way Wanda could return and still have Elizabeth Olsen
• 13:08
in the role is through Audrey Plaza's character Death.
• 13:12
The show hinted that she has resurrection powers, so it's
• 13:15
possible she could bring Wanda back as a way to mess with
• 13:18
Agatha and Billy while they're hunting for Tommy.
• 13:22
But let's be honest, it's probably going to be a
• 13:25
multiversal Wanda or her soul. Like she died in Wanda Gore, but
• 13:32
her soul is still floating around like Billy and Tommy's.
• 13:35
  I think that's, I think that's what's going to happen because
• 13:38
let's be honest, she's coming back.
• 13:40
There's no way she's not. Marvel knows what hit she is as
• 13:44
a character. So let's just all wait to see.
• 13:49
I, I know we all kind of like, is she going to be in Avengers
• 13:53
  Doomsday? Is she not?
• 13:55
Personally, I don't know. I go back and forth.
• 13:59
As of right now, I don't think so.
• 14:01
But Secret Wars, absolutely. So, yeah.
• 14:04
Plus, we have the Vision Series 2, and I think that's when we're
• 14:08
going to see Elizabeth Olsen next.
• 14:14
I don't remember when Vision series Vision Quest is supposed
• 14:16
to drop, but whatever. So I think we're going to see
• 14:20
her in that because I think we're going to get his wife,
• 14:23
Virginia. I think that she will be modeled
• 14:25
after Elizabeth Olsen. I think that'd be really cool.
• 14:30
It might not happen because my theories always suck, but I
• 14:33
think it'd be cool. So yeah, so thank you for
• 14:36
listening to this entire thing about me rambling about Scarlet
• 14:40
Witch. I hope you enjoyed it and let me
• 14:42
know in the comments if you liked it.
• 14:44
How do you feel about Scarlet Witch?
• 14:46
Is she a villain? Is she a hero?
• 14:48
Let me know it all. So be sure to like and subscribe
• 14:51
  and have a marvelous day.
