- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:06your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:10for August 24th, today's National Waffle Day, and it has
- 0:15to be one of the most perfectly practical origin stories you'll
- 0:18ever hear. We celebrate this delicious day
- 0:21because on August 24th, 1869, Cornelius Startwell of Troy, NY
- 0:28received AUS Patent for his improvement in waffle irons, the
- 0:34first modern waffle iron that revolutionized how we make these
- 0:37beloved breakfast treats. Now, waffles themselves have
- 0:41been around much longer than 1869.
- 0:44Ancient Greeks were cooking flat cakes between metal plates as
- 0:47far back as the 1300s, though they topped them with cheese and
- 0:52herbs rather than Maple syrup. Medieval Europeans refined the
- 0:57process, creating intricate patterns and designs in their
- 1:01waffle irons. But Startwell's genius was
- 1:04transforming the waffle iron from a cumbersome, dangerous
- 1:08tool into something safe and practical for home use.
- 1:12This design featured hinged plates that could easily be
- 1:15turned, preventing burns and ensuring even cooking.
- 1:20It was heated on a stove top, making waffles accessible to
- 1:24regular families rather than just professional bakers or the
- 1:28wealthy. Suddenly these grill pattern
- 1:31delights with their perfect syrup catching squares could
- 1:35grace breakfast tables across America.
- 1:38What makes waffles so special isn't just their taste, it's
- 1:42their design. Those squares aren't just
- 1:44decorative, they're functional. They're masterpieces that hold
- 1:49butter, syrup, fruit, and whatever delicious toppings you
- 1:52can imagine. It's form meeting function in
- 1:56the most delicious way possible. Which brings us perfectly into
- 2:01today's quote from the legendary architect Louis Sullivan, who
- 2:06once said form follows function. That has been misunderstood.
- 2:13Form and function should be 1 joined in a spiritual union.
- 2:20Hmm. Louis Sullivan's architectural
- 2:23principle connects beautifully to the humble waffle and
- 2:26Cornelius Startwell's innovative design.
- 2:29Sullivan is often simplified to just form follows function, but
- 2:35his complete thought is much more profound.
- 2:39He believed that the best designs achieve a perfect
- 2:42marriage between how something looks and how it works.
- 2:46Think about the waffle. Those distinctive square
- 2:49indentations aren't there just to make it look pretty.
- 2:52Every pocket serves a purpose, creating the perfect vessel for
- 2:56syrup, butter and toppings. And I don't know if you tried,
- 3:00but blueberries fit in there perfectly.
- 3:05The grid pattern also ensures even cooking and creates more
- 3:08surface area for that perfect crispy exterior.
- 3:12Form and function exist in what Sullivan called a spiritual
- 3:17union. Start Boat understood this
- 3:21principle intuitively. His waffle iron wasn't just
- 3:24functional, it was elegantly designed with hinged plates that
- 3:28made flipping easy and safe, handles that stayed cool, and a
- 3:32compact form that fit well on stove tops.
- 3:36He didn't just solve the functional problems of waffle
- 3:39making, he created something beautiful in its simplicity.
- 3:44The principle extends far beyond architecture and kitchen
- 3:47appliances. The best solutions in life often
- 3:50come when we stop seeing beauty and practicality as opposing
- 3:53forces and start looking for ways to unite them.
- 3:57Whether we're organizing our homes, planning our days, or
- 4:00building relationships, the most satisfying approaches are those
- 4:04where what works well also feels right.
- 4:07The waffle reminds us that sometimes the most elegant
- 4:10solutions are also the most functional ones, and the most
- 4:14practical designs can also be the most pleasing.
- 4:19I love waffles, but my little waffle maker isn't working this
- 4:23weekend or actually this month because he's in France and Spain
- 4:31and I can't even get his sisters to make waffles today because
- 4:35guess where they are? Yeah, Europe.
- 4:42So today on National Waffle Day, guess who's going to make the
- 4:46most unbelievably good waffles for breakfast?
- 4:50Me. You too can make waffles today
- 4:54if your little. Actually, he's really big.
- 4:58Now, if your little waffle maker is far, far away, you can make
- 5:03waffles on your own. So today, in honor of National
- 5:08Waffle Day and Cornelius Startwout's brilliant design,
- 5:13consider where you might apply Louis Sullivan's principle in
- 5:16your own life. Look for opportunities to unite
- 5:19form and function, beauty and practicality, elegance and
- 5:24effectiveness. Remember that the best
- 5:27solutions, whether they're waffle irons, life choices, or
- 5:30daily routines, often happen when we stop seeing function and
- 5:34beauty as separate goals and start looking for ways to
- 5:38achieve both in harmony. That's going to do it for today.
- 5:42May your solutions be as elegant as they are effective.
- 5:45And may you always find those perfect pockets for life's
- 5:49sweetest moments. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 5:52for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
