- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We need to be praying for our brothers and sisters, and I know
- 0:39sometimes we don't. We're thinking so much about
- 0:42here and now, my life and my family, my church, whatever my
- 0:46community, my city, and we need to be praying for those things.
- 0:49But we need to ask God to give us a mind to pray for those who
- 0:54are being persecuted right now. There's more Christians who have
- 0:57been martyred over the last 50 years and all the history of
- 1:02martyrdom from the beginning of the Church age.
- 1:04That's hard to believe. We don't hear about that on the
- 1:06nightly news. I personally don't watch much of
- 1:09the news anymore. I can't remember the last time I
- 1:12was encouraged by watching the news, but there was plenty of
- 1:16information available online. Whether it's genocide in Nigeria
- 1:21or persecution in China, Christians are being killed for
- 1:25their faith. Pastor Clark explains today that
- 1:28we in the United States are privileged not to face the
- 1:32intense persecution that other believers deal with.
- 1:36We bear the responsibility to pray for them continually.
- 1:40We must be prayerfully supporting our brothers and
- 1:42sisters now. Here's Pastor Clark in
- 1:45Revelation Chapter 2 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:49of Grace. And to the Angel of the Church
- 1:52of Smyrna, right these things, says the 1st and the last, who
- 1:55was dead and came to life. I know your works, tribulation
- 1:59and poverty, but you are rich. And I know the blasphemy of
- 2:02those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of
- 2:06Satan. Do not fear any of those things
- 2:09which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil's about to
- 2:13throw some of you into prison that you may be tested and you
- 2:17will have tribulation 10 days. Be faithful until death, and I
- 2:22will give you the crown of life. The Church of Ephesus was a very
- 2:26good church, but it had one problem.
- 2:28It had left its first love. It no longer had passion and
- 2:31zeal and focus on their relationship with Jesus.
- 2:36And so when we're studying these churches, I don't want you just
- 2:38to think about the churches back way back then, but think about
- 2:43the churches that also exist today.
- 2:45How are we similar in some ways to these very churches we're
- 2:48studying? And that we we talked last week
- 2:51about the importance of having our first love restored with the
- 2:54Lord, that we're close to him, that that we're in love with him
- 2:58and that we want to follow him and, and seek his face and live
- 3:01in a way that's pleasing to him. We need the Lord to rekindle
- 3:04that love moment by moment, don't we?
- 3:06It's something we have to work at.
- 3:08It's something we have to be asking the Lord to do in our
- 3:10hearts because if we don't, we get cold.
- 3:13All of us. We we drift.
- 3:14And so Ephesus was a good, good lesson for us.
- 3:18Jesus said repent and go back and do your first work, lest I
- 3:22come and remove the lampstand or the light of influence from that
- 3:27particular local church. Now, Smyrna is a completely
- 3:30different type of church and when we study these seven
- 3:33churches, some are really messed up and some are actually being
- 3:36faithful in the midst of a very, very difficult time of
- 3:39tribulation. 2 churches that weren't actually even been given
- 3:43the admonition to repent was Smyrna in the Philadelphia
- 3:46church in Philadelphia. Those two churches weren't given
- 3:49the admonition that Ephesus was and some of the others.
- 3:52But Smyrna, just for a little bit geographical background
- 3:56here. It's the modern city of Izmir
- 3:58today, which is a gateway into modern Turkey.
- 4:01It was a beautiful, splendid city, was actually the most
- 4:04beautiful city at that particular time, had the highest
- 4:08population of Jews and and Asia Minor, and it was the only 7,
- 4:14only one of seven of the churches we're studying that's
- 4:16actually still in existence today.
- 4:18It's not called Smyrna anymore, it's called Izmir.
- 4:21It also was a city that had been destroyed prior to all this
- 4:28event occurring as we're studying here in Revelation
- 4:31approximately 7700 years earlier.
- 4:34This particular city was destroyed and, and the laden
- 4:37ruins for about 300 years and then it was rebuilt,
- 4:40reestablished and it became just an amazing city of influence,
- 4:45gateway city, as I said, into the modern day country of
- 4:49Turkey. It's the most brief of all the
- 4:51letters. I when I was starting to study
- 4:53this, I said, well, boy, I'm, I'm not going to have enough
- 4:55information here. It's only going to take about 10
- 4:57minutes. I'm going to have to go into
- 4:58program this after I got into this.
- 5:00No way that I run out of information.
- 5:02It's just amazing all the things that are written down about the
- 5:05what happened with this particular church.
- 5:07So even though it's very, very brief, only a few verses, very,
- 5:11very powerful things to say to us, these believers in verse 9
- 5:15says, he says, I know your works, your tribulation and
- 5:18poverty, they were going through really difficult times.
- 5:21Now for you today, it might be hard for you to wrap your mind
- 5:24around what that would be like in your situation right now.
- 5:27All of us have trials in our lives, right?
- 5:30Some degree of trial and tribulation.
- 5:32Not one of us here doesn't have something they're they're going
- 5:35through or thinking through how you going to get past it, how
- 5:37you going to deal with it, How you going to have the wisdom to
- 5:40know how to be influenced in the godly way through whatever it is
- 5:43that you might personally be going through individually.
- 5:46But the tribulation that these folks were going through is much
- 5:49more difficult than than what we're going through.
- 5:52They were basically being assaulted for their faith in
- 5:55Christ. They were being thrown in
- 5:57prison. They were being beat.
- 5:59Many of them died as martyrs for their faith.
- 6:03They were, because of their faith, not given the opportunity
- 6:06to earn a living. It would be like the companies
- 6:08that we work for today, that if they found out we were
- 6:11Christians, they would say you don't have a job unless you
- 6:13forsake and curse Christ. That's how tough it was.
- 6:16And because of that, the people were very poor.
- 6:19They didn't have much in the material wealth that we have
- 6:22been given the privilege to experience in our culture, our
- 6:25country. They were plundered and deprived
- 6:28of their right to work. And you think about living in
- 6:33those days. And I tried to think about some
- 6:34countries that are actually going through that right now as
- 6:38we speak. And I think of Indonesia.
- 6:41It's a beautiful, beautiful country, but it's basically
- 6:44overrun by Muslim rule. If you're found to be a
- 6:47believer, you will possibly be martyred and killed for your
- 6:52faith. Sudan, Nigeria, Afghanistan,
- 6:57Iraq, Iran, many, many of these countries as we speak are going
- 7:02through these kind of times. So we need to be praying for our
- 7:05brothers and sisters. And I know sometimes we don't.
- 7:08We're thinking so much about here and now, my life and my
- 7:11family and my church, whatever, my community, my city.
- 7:14And we need to be praying for those things.
- 7:16But we need to ask God to give us a mind to pray for those who
- 7:21are being persecuted right now. There's more Christians who have
- 7:24been martyred over the last 50 years and all the history of
- 7:28martyrdom from the beginning of the Church age.
- 7:31And it's hard to believe we don't hear about that on the
- 7:33nightly news. We'll hear about other types of
- 7:35atrocities, but you don't hear a lot from your local newscaster,
- 7:39your major television affiliates telling you that Christians are
- 7:43being martyred in many of these countries, China and other
- 7:47countries. It's been very, very difficult
- 7:49to live in as a as a believer. We're still given the privilege
- 7:53in our country to have freedom of religion.
- 7:55We have the right to assemble, to worship and to proclaim
- 7:59Christ in the media. We still have that privilege and
- 8:01the print, television, radio, we also have the ability to
- 8:05communicate our faith even in our places of employment.
- 8:09And that's a privilege I think so often that we take for
- 8:12granted. John was teaching us this
- 8:14morning and he said, you know, we should be praying that God
- 8:16would give us one person in our life this week that we might be
- 8:20able to share the gospel with and really be thankful that we
- 8:24have the privilege and we can do that without fear of being in
- 8:27prison, right? Yet these people in these
- 8:29countries and the folks in Smyrna, because of the
- 8:33persecution and because of the rules and the laws of Caesar,
- 8:36they spoke about their faith in Christ anyway.
- 8:39They didn't care if they lost their job.
- 8:41They didn't care if they were thrown into prison or beaten or
- 8:45even killed for their faith. And as I read that, I say, Lord,
- 8:48where's my heart and all this? If I was put in a situation
- 8:52right now, today, tomorrow, next week, where I had to lose my job
- 8:58because of my stand for Christ, would I be willing to stand up
- 9:02for my faith? We all say, yeah, we would.
- 9:05But when we're in that situation, only God knows what
- 9:09our hearts would actually do, right?
- 9:11But I believe that God gives us grace in the midst of the times,
- 9:14of the trials and the tribulations.
- 9:16We don't have the ability, so to speak, to think I'm tough, I'm a
- 9:20strong Christian, I can handle anything.
- 9:22I'll do this. That's foolish.
- 9:23But to realize, Lord help me, if I'm ever put in a situation like
- 9:27these folks in Smyrna, that I'll be found faithful to the end,
- 9:32not relying upon my strength, but upon the strength that only
- 9:36you can give me. And that's called dying grace.
- 9:39Many of the martyrs, when they gave their lives for Christ,
- 9:41they were freaking out up until the moment that they were taken
- 9:44to the torches. And once they were tied up and
- 9:46the fire was being lit and being lit, many of them said.
- 9:49And before they died, there was such a sense of God's presence
- 9:52and peace that they were excited about what was waiting for them
- 9:56on the other side of this world. And that's the grace of God
- 10:00provided for us, I believe, in the time of our most desperate
- 10:02need. There was one minister at that
- 10:04time, a very famous church father.
- 10:06You might have read about him as you studied church history and
- 10:10approximately 155. His name is Polycarp and he was
- 10:13a minister, but that later on after these days of Smyrna.
- 10:18But this persecution continued intensely up until the 3rd
- 10:22century until Constantine saw this vision in the sky of a
- 10:26cross. And he said he heard this voice
- 10:28saying by this you'll conquer. And that's when he became a
- 10:31Christian and he made Christianity the religion of the
- 10:36provinces at that time. And so the persecution stopped.
- 10:39That was a wonderful thing in some ways.
- 10:41But when the persecution stops, what happens is a church has a
- 10:44tendency to then become lukewarm and cold.
- 10:46That's just the way it is. But anyway, Polycarp, he was
- 10:50given this edict that he had to come into the Colosseum.
- 10:54It was during the times of The Olympian Games, similar to like
- 10:58right now what we have going on in Canada.
- 11:01And it was accustomed that he would have to or Christians,
- 11:04anybody, they'd have to give allegiance to Caesar, basically
- 11:07say Caesar is Lord. And there was no way Polycarp
- 11:10was going to do that. He refused.
- 11:13And so the crowds are crying out in the Coliseum for Polycarp
- 11:17because he was very influential at the time.
- 11:19Everybody knew his faith and how he lived.
- 11:21And they're all thinking like this guy, he's not going to
- 11:24stand for his faith when it's going to possibly cost him his
- 11:28life. This is what he replied whenever
- 11:31they told him you curse Christ, you make a sacrifice of Caesar
- 11:35or you die. This is what a polycarp said. 86
- 11:39years have I served him and he has done me no wrong.
- 11:43How can I blasphemy my king who saved me and he was burned at
- 11:48the stake by the Romans and Jews?
- 11:50How awesome. What an example to us of a hero
- 11:53in the faith. And so Jesus is encouraging them
- 11:57as he speaks to his church in Smyrna, He says to them that he
- 12:01is the 1st and the last who was dead and he came to life.
- 12:04So he's speaking to those who are facing martyrdom.
- 12:07He's saying, think about this, they crucified me, they killed
- 12:11me, but the grave could not hold me.
- 12:14The grave won't hold you guys either.
- 12:15If you're believers in Christ, no matter how you die, no matter
- 12:19what happens in your life, whether it's just your natural
- 12:22death, old age or disease or a tragedy or maybe for someone day
- 12:27martyrdom. We don't have to fear or worry
- 12:30because as Christ has been risen from the dead, we also shall
- 12:34rise in newness of life. And so he's speaking to them
- 12:37comfort and he says in verse 10 about the sacrifice that he
- 12:43made, He said don't fear the things that you're about to
- 12:46suffer and the deed. The devil's about to throw some
- 12:49of you into prison that you may be tested and you will have
- 12:52tribulation for 10 days. What Christ went through for you
- 12:56and me that the death of the tomb couldn't hold him.
- 13:00We read about that in the the Gospels during our daily Bible
- 13:04reading. I mean, they sealed that tomb
- 13:06up. They sent the soldiers there
- 13:08because they heard, hey, this guy, supposedly he's, they say
- 13:11he's going to raise. We've heard them say this about
- 13:14him. He said this about himself.
- 13:16So this would be on the safe side.
- 13:17Get down and really seal that tomb.
- 13:19I mean, a huge rock was, was pushed in front of it.
- 13:22How in the world you'd ever get that thing off would be a
- 13:24miracle in itself. But the seal, it made it
- 13:26impossible to do anything with that.
- 13:28I mean, that was a done deal. And yet that sealed tomb, that
- 13:33big stone couldn't hold him, could it?
- 13:36He walked out the third day and he was seen by over 500
- 13:40witnesses. He was alive from the dead.
- 13:43So he's encouraging them to be faithful and death.
- 13:46Don't, don't fear. He's exhorting them.
- 13:48Be faithful until death. And he says you'll be crowned
- 13:52with the reward of life. And you think about the trials.
- 13:57He says, I know your works, your tribulation, your poverty.
- 14:01Sometimes we think about trials. Why do we have them?
- 14:04We all go through them. But there's nothing like trials
- 14:07to purify us, is there? There's nothing like difficulty
- 14:10in life to get us on our face and say, Lord, help me.
- 14:13And that's humility. When a trial comes, God allows
- 14:16it because he knows it's going to bring us closer to him.
- 14:18Now we're freaking out. We don't like it.
- 14:20We want it to go away as quickly as possible.
- 14:23He understands our frame, our weakness.
- 14:24But he says don't be afraid that the trying of your faith works.
- 14:27Patience, try. Your faith will make you like
- 14:31me, and you'll shine like pure gold.
- 14:34If we're going to be glorified together with him, the apostle
- 14:38Peter tells us, we also have to suffer with him.
- 14:41And we always have to remember all of us, that in the midst of
- 14:44the trials and the struggles of life, God is with us, isn't he?
- 14:48He always is with us. He promises He'll never leave us
- 14:52or forsake us. Sometimes we feel like, God,
- 14:54where are you? I felt like that at times.
- 14:57I'm sure you have too. You're going through something.
- 14:58You're like, Lord, where are you in all this?
- 15:01But he's there, He's always there.
- 15:03He promises never to leave us. He walks through it with us.
- 15:06I like what Psalm 32 says. He says, behold, the eye of the
- 15:10Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy
- 15:14to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive and in
- 15:20falling. Our soul waits for the Lord.
- 15:22He is our help and our shield for our heart shall rejoice in
- 15:26him because we have trusted in his holy name.
- 15:29Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us just as we hope in you.
- 15:34He says that in these trials, in the midst of these trials,
- 15:37they're rich. And James says in chapter 2,
- 15:40verse 5, listen my beloved brethren, has God not chosen the
- 15:44poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom
- 15:48which He promised to them who love him?
- 15:51I think about the Christians in Haiti.
- 15:53You've seen him on TV, haven't you?
- 15:55They have lost everything. They didn't have anything to
- 15:57begin with. One of the most poor countries
- 16:00in the world. They have this horrendous
- 16:04earthquake that wipes out over 200,000 people.
- 16:09Many of them lost their children, their spouses, their
- 16:12loved ones, their friends, and I was blown away to see them
- 16:16assembling together, raising their hands and worshipping God.
- 16:21Poor, inheriting the Kingdom of God.
- 16:26He speaks about the adversary, the devil, and he is a real
- 16:30being. He is interested in destroying
- 16:34all of our lives. The Bible tells us the devil has
- 16:37come to seek and to kill and to rob and to destroy.
- 16:40He is involved in this world every day to keep it from
- 16:46knowing the truth of Jesus Christ.
- 16:49He is sending his emissaries out all the time to prevent you and
- 16:52me from growing in the grace and the knowledge of God.
- 16:55He wants us to be stunted, immature Christians.
- 16:59He wants us to live without our inheritance in this world, not
- 17:02experiencing the Kingdom of God within.
- 17:05He'll do everything he can to destroy your faith.
- 17:09The Lord allows him to work. That's the mystery.
- 17:12And the purposes of God are sometimes very, very complex for
- 17:16our human frail minds to understand.
- 17:18But the Bible tells us that God's ways aren't our ways.
- 17:22Neither are his thoughts. Our thoughts, for his ways are
- 17:24so much higher than our ways, and His thoughts so much higher
- 17:28than ours. There's a purpose in all these
- 17:31things, and God is ultimately glorified.
- 17:34And one day this enemy of our souls and the enemy of the
- 17:37Kingdom of God will be one day in that final judgment, pass
- 17:40into the lake of fire forever and ever, never to bother or
- 17:44hassle anyone again. But he's always working to
- 17:47trouble the church. His big focus is to destroy the
- 17:51Church of Jesus Christ. The good news is Jesus Christ
- 17:54says I will build my church and the gates of hell will not
- 17:58prevail against it. The enemy can take everybody
- 18:02out, but it can't stop the work of God moving on.
- 18:07And many of these people had given their lives in this day
- 18:09and Smyrna for the sake of the gospel, but it hasn't stopped
- 18:13the movement of the gospel. 2000 years later.
- 18:16He speaks about these people that are enemies of God and
- 18:20they're tools of the devil. It says these folks say they are
- 18:23Jews and they are not two different kind of Jews.
- 18:28Jews that have a heart for Messiah, Jews who are waiting.
- 18:32Jews even at the time of Christ crucifixion were sensitive, even
- 18:36though they couldn't understand that he at this time was the one
- 18:39they were waiting for. They had a vulnerable, a
- 18:42vulnerability of softness. Many of them eventually did come
- 18:46to believe on Christ because the early church was made-up
- 18:49primarily of Jews and they carried the worship of the
- 18:53synagogue right into the New Testament.
- 18:55Many of the symbolism and the pictures and the art and the
- 18:58design of the priestly garments and robes were carried through
- 19:01from the Jewish temple. It's interesting as we're
- 19:04reading right now in Exodus, isn't it the, the, the specific
- 19:07detail on how God wanted that Tabernacle built, the colors,
- 19:13the, the length of the, the material that was used, the
- 19:16embroidery and the, the symbolism, the type at this,
- 19:20this mind blowing of the, of the beauty of, of God and, and his
- 19:23Kingdom, his church. But there were obviously as
- 19:27there is today, not any Jews but Gentiles who cannot stand the
- 19:31gospel of Christ and they are the enemies of the gospel.
- 19:36I would say organizations like the ACLU.
- 19:41They are dead set against our freedoms as Christians and the
- 19:46message that we proclaim the person we believe in and trust
- 19:51in his Lord and Savior. Many, many people today on the
- 19:56liberal side of the agenda that are pushing all these teachings
- 20:01of of really ungodliness are against what we do here and what
- 20:07we do as churches in these last days, standing on the Scriptures
- 20:11and teaching the word of God and so.
- 20:15Because of the large population of Jews in Smyrna, the
- 20:18Christians were really overrun by all these people that wanted
- 20:21to destroy them. It was a tough place to be a
- 20:24Christian in. They were the main enemies of
- 20:27the gospel. Verse 10 he says to them again,
- 20:31don't fear these things which you are about to suffer.
- 20:34Luke chapter 12, verse 4, Jesus says to the disciples, My
- 20:39friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that
- 20:43have no more that they can do, but fear the one who has the
- 20:47power to cast 1 into hell. So Christ himself reminding us
- 20:53that we're not to fear what man can do to us.
- 20:58You know, there's this element of fear that we all have, a fear
- 21:01of disease, fear of failure, fear of financial ruin, fear of
- 21:07losing jobs. We all, we all struggle with a
- 21:08certain type of fear, but a fear of knowing that you're in the
- 21:12jail cell tonight. This is your last night on
- 21:15earth. And you know, tomorrow you're
- 21:17going to be thrown to the lions or you're going to have your
- 21:19head cut off because of your faith.
- 21:22And you're probably walking around pacing in the cell
- 21:24saying, Lord, I really believe you.
- 21:25But I really have to go through this.
- 21:27Is there another way out of this?
- 21:29You know, would you mind if I just, you know, I really believe
- 21:31in you, but would you mind if I just told him I didn't?
- 21:35I'm sure those things would go through all of our minds and our
- 21:38hearts, especially when our families, maybe we're at home
- 21:42and we knew that we wouldn't see them again until the next life.
- 21:46The struggle of having to wait for the Lord to bring everything
- 21:52to a final culmination in the last day.
- 21:54But I think about martyrs. I think about Stephen, the first
- 21:57martyr in the New Testament in Acts Chapter 7.
- 22:00This is what happened after he's being accused of treason and
- 22:05he's speaking out and proclaiming the gospel with all
- 22:07his heart, all his mind, all his soul is strength.
- 22:10Such conviction and fervor and love in his heart for the people
- 22:14he's speaking to. He's speaking to them about who
- 22:17Jesus is and what he did for them.
- 22:18It says that people were so angry they clenched their teeth.
- 22:22They just like, let me add them, let me get rid of them, just
- 22:25like they wanted to get rid of Christ.
- 22:27And it says, but he being full of the Holy Spirit.
- 22:30And that's the key, guys. No matter what we're going
- 22:33through in life, the struggles, the fears, the anxieties, the
- 22:36pressures at work or home or wherever, when we are filled
- 22:41with the Holy Spirit, we're overcomers.
- 22:44But when we're filled with our own vanity and pride and our own
- 22:48fear, we're basket cases. Stephen's full of the Holy
- 22:52Spirit. He gazes into heaven and God
- 22:54gives him a vision. He sees the glory of God and
- 22:57Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
- 23:00I love that Christ stood up. He it says right now he's seated
- 23:04at the right hand of Father ever living to make intercession for
- 23:07us his Saints day and night. He's praying for us all the
- 23:10time. But there's a limit, isn't
- 23:12there? What he's going to allow to
- 23:13happen to his kids. And so he sees what's going on
- 23:16with Steven and he couldn't help but to stand up.
- 23:19And one day he's going to stand up and not only stand up, but
- 23:22come back and put all things in order, and he's going to destroy
- 23:25wickedness from the face of the earth, and no one will ever
- 23:29raise their hand and one of his children again.
- 23:32What a day that'll be, huh? When are Jesus?
- 23:35We shall see when we look into his face, the one who saved us
- 23:38by his grace, the old song, What a day, glorious day that will
- 23:42be. And so Jesus, he stands in the
- 23:44right hand of the Father. And Stephen says, look, I see
- 23:50the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right
- 23:53hand of God. Thanks for being with us today
- 23:58here on Living Waters of Grace. We're in the Book of Revelation,
- 24:02and we find it fascinating how influential and involved the
- 24:07angels are in this book. They bring about whatever it is
- 24:11that God has instructed them to do, but it's through their
- 24:15actions that much of the judgements come on the earth.
- 24:19The angels are in submission to God as their authority, but He
- 24:22utilizes them in unique ways throughout this book.
- 24:26Like angels have a specific purpose from God, you have a
- 24:30unique purpose and plan too. God wants to use you in your
- 24:34life as a testimony to others and to bring others who are
- 24:37currently lost into the fold of God.
- 24:41God would love more than anything for all who are willing
- 24:44to come to Him for salvation, but He wants it to be their
- 24:47choice, not a forced situation. This is the way God works, not
- 24:53forcing himself on anyone, but giving each person free will.
- 24:57If you're interested in learning about this choice that's free
- 25:01and that it's a gift, go to calvarychapelonline.com and
- 25:06click on the About Us tab and then find the link for what we
- 25:10believe. We'd love to be a help and a
- 25:13resource for you as you walk through what it means to be a
- 25:16follower of Jesus. If you find the contact tab on
- 25:20our website, you can get in touch with us or submit a prayer
- 25:24request. We'd love to hear from you.
- 25:27That's all for today's edition and Revelation, but there's much
- 25:30more that Pastor Clark plans to share with us from this
- 25:34culminating book of the Bible. Stay tuned for that and make
