Transcript
- 0:00Hello there, it's time for most things Kenobi.
- 0:05I prefer all things Kenobi, but I suppose that's not the Jedi
- 0:08way, as long as it's not all things Anakin.
- 0:24Hi everyone, Welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:27podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:30I'm your host, Leanne. And I'm your host, Lauren.
- 0:34This week we're flipping it. We're talking the the inverse,
- 0:40the opposite of the seven deadly sins.
- 0:44We're talking about the seven virtues.
- 0:47And for those who don't know, there's 7 heavenly virtues.
- 0:52And there's seven capital virtues, and sometimes the
- 0:56heavenly ones are considered cardinal.
- 0:59And it's all this crap. But we're just focusing on the
- 1:01seven capital virtues. We didn't know what we were
- 1:05getting ourselves hit, did we? Right.
- 1:07No, but the seven capital virtues are the ones that pair
- 1:12best with the seven deadly sins. Yeah, they're considered like
- 1:17the opposite of the sins. Yes.
- 1:19Yeah. And I have to say, I thought
- 1:22this would be easier, but I found it much harder.
- 1:26Much harder. I had to actually look up lists
- 1:31of Star Wars characters to jog my memory for some of this,
- 1:34because it wasn't coming. Like with the sins, people
- 1:38popped to mind right away, and for the virtues that did not
- 1:41really happen as easily. No.
- 1:44And some of them I put originally in one in one column
- 1:48and there was like, no, no, no, no, they they belong over here.
- 1:50And then I had to rethink who belongs in the previous spot.
- 1:54So I do have some repeaters. Same as the seven deadly sins.
- 2:02I don't think I do actually, which is.
- 2:04You don't. Yeah, I'm really surprised that
- 2:06I don't I. I'm interesting.
- 2:09Yeah, this is going to be fun. I'm actually really excited to
- 2:12talk. So, similar to the Seven Deadly
- 2:16Sins episode, we are going to talk about the virtue itself and
- 2:20what it means via Wikipedia. Yeah.
- 2:24And then we'll talk about who we chose.
- 2:25We chose one male and one female character.
- 2:28If we could get that which I could not get for the first one
- 2:33which is chastity. Well, do you want to list what
- 2:37the the seven virtues are? Yes.
- 2:40So the seven capital virtues. Are as follows the the exact
- 2:46opposite of the Seven Deadly Sins.
- 2:48They are chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience,
- 2:55kindness and humility. Yes.
- 2:59Do you know what I enjoy about this?
- 3:01What? It's not just ooh, what
- 3:04character matches. It's actually a kind of a study
- 3:07in the meaning of words. Yes.
- 3:11Because these things. You think you know what it
- 3:13means, and then if you actually, if you actually dig into the
- 3:18definition, it's it's much more specific.
- 3:21Yes, and I I kind of enjoy that. I think you and I, because we
- 3:25both love writing the meaning of words, is actually pretty
- 3:31interesting to me. I don't know.
- 3:33Yes, and it forces you to, kind of.
- 3:36So you have to understand the virtue or the sin, if you will.
- 3:41And then you have to really think about the path these
- 3:44characters took and if it goes with the full definition.
- 3:50Right. It is interesting.
- 3:52I let's dive in because I'm curious what you have, because
- 3:58this this whole thing was just a giant trip on the struggle bus
- 4:03for me. Why did I picture the Magic
- 4:09School Bus when you? Said, Well, it is.
- 4:11It's me and you and the Magic School Bus, but it struggles
- 4:14because it has four flat tires, so you know.
- 4:20I just meme the other day. That was like when you're in the
- 4:23grocery store and all your shopping cartwheels are perfect.
- 4:26And it was just four pictures of Obi Wan.
- 4:30Well, he he's a repeater on my list.
- 4:34Him and Luke are the the two that repeat.
- 4:37It makes sense, honestly. Quite often, but I tried not to
- 4:41repeat. But sometimes it was just so
- 4:42obvious that I had to put them on the list.
- 4:46Anyway, I'll read the first one and then we'll flip flop, right?
- 4:50Alright, so the first one is chastity, which also is known as
- 4:56purity and it it's as. We all think chastity is
- 5:01literally someone who is chased refrains from either sexual
- 5:05activity that is considered immoral or from any sexual
- 5:09activity at all according to their state of life.
- 5:13In some context, for example, when making a vow of chastity,
- 5:16chastity means that the same thing is celibacy.
- 5:19So based on this alone, I mean it all goes around the act of
- 5:24sex. So this was really hard for me,
- 5:27but I put the Yoda. That's funny.
- 5:34Because I mean he. OK, so we think about the Jedi
- 5:38or what the jetty was supposed to be.
- 5:40They were supposed to be chased from this correct order or maybe
- 5:44not so much the act of but remain pure in the fact that
- 5:48don't form attachments and stuff.
- 5:50But Yoda was refrained from everything.
- 5:53He was just. I don't even want to think about
- 5:58it. I know, it's fucking crazy, but
- 6:01like, he's the only one I could come up with.
- 6:04I couldn't come up with a female.
- 6:06That's interesting. I struggled with a female
- 6:09because Star Wars is pretty saucy for ladies, honestly.
- 6:16A lot of them have children and that's fine.
- 6:18We're not saying that chastity is good or bad, it's just it's
- 6:21on the list, so. Right, exactly.
- 6:26Okay, so my first choice was qui gone because.
- 6:31But. Did he?
- 6:33In Canon, he's actually really opposed to casual sex.
- 6:37Okay. Which is really disappointing.
- 6:40It. Is, if I may say.
- 6:46That oh, you may. There's a scene in Master and
- 6:51Apprentice where Rail Avaros is sleeping with some woman at a
- 6:55bar or something like that. He has like a casual
- 6:57relationship with her and Quigon's really opposed to it.
- 7:01And Avaros is like this coming from you who's had a
- 7:05relationship in the past. So I don't know if he like what
- 7:10it was that changed Quigon's opinion, but according to that
- 7:13book, he is more chaste than I wish to believe.
- 7:18Okay. Fair enough.
- 7:21But the the woman I picked was Shmee.
- 7:25Yeah, she would be the only other person because even though
- 7:29she had a child, it was, you know, the essentially the story
- 7:33of Mother Mary. Right Immaculate Conception of
- 7:37Anakin. Yeah.
- 7:40Yeah, so. And she is.
- 7:44Portrayed more as like a motherly character, where even
- 7:47the other characters who are that way also are kind of sexy,
- 7:51like Leia and Padme. And I mean a lot of like even
- 7:56Aura Singh, you know, she's not motherly, but she's definitely
- 7:59more like sexy. And there was clearly she had a
- 8:02relationship with Hondo. So yeah.
- 8:05Wow, that's a choice. Right.
- 8:09Jesus. I mean, well, anyway.
- 8:12Yeah. So that's who I picked.
- 8:14That was tough though because that that is.
- 8:16So it's so specific. You know, it is very specific.
- 8:20There's no wiggle room. There's no, there's no symbolism
- 8:22we could go off of, right. So yeah, yeah, that was the
- 8:26hardest one for me, I think. Yeah, sure, that was tricky.
- 8:31Shall we move on to temperance? Yes.
- 8:34Temperance in its modern use is defined as moderation or
- 8:38voluntary self restraint. It's typically described in
- 8:42terms of what a person voluntarily refrains from doing.
- 8:45This includes restraint from revenge by practicing mercy and
- 8:49forgiveness, restraint from arrogance by practicing humility
- 8:53and modesty, restraint from excess such as extravagant
- 8:57luxury or splurging, restraint from overindulgence in food and
- 9:01drink, and restraint from rage or craving by practicing
- 9:05calmness and equanimity. So I'm very curious who you have
- 9:11because I came back to this one over and over and over and read
- 9:15over temperance. I googled examples of
- 9:19temperance. I had to really like deep dive
- 9:22into this one because the obvious one for me is Obi Wan.
- 9:27Yeah, because this is not about selfcontrol, right?
- 9:30Like the the next paragraph here that describes says that it's
- 9:34temperance isn't. Selfcontrol.
- 9:38It is like not even having that negative feeling in the first
- 9:44place. Yeah.
- 9:46Because you're so, like, at peace with yourself in the world
- 9:50that you don't have these negative feelings.
- 9:53Ever. So.
- 9:55And and the fact that Obi Wan that what did it for me for to
- 9:58put Obi Wan in this category was his.
- 10:03Restraint when it came to mall in the very end, right?
- 10:07He just, he's never accessed. He never.
- 10:09He doesn't have anything. He doesn't choose like he
- 10:14chooses violence, but he doesn't choose revenge.
- 10:16Right. He always has grace at the very
- 10:19end of of everything and it just seems to come to him
- 10:22intrinsically. It's not like what do I do here?
- 10:26Do I do this or that? It just comes to him.
- 10:30I think that over the course of everyone's life he develops
- 10:33temperance because we we've talked about in the past how he
- 10:37has those feelings. He just chooses not to act on
- 10:40them. But like you said, by the time
- 10:42he gets to rebels with Ball, he's not even having that anger.
- 10:46He's very much even in in like at peace at that point.
- 10:51So I think that's a really good choice, honestly.
- 10:55Who do you have? I have Yoda.
- 10:59Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he doesn't.
- 11:02He just doesn't. Yeah, he doesn't show any signs
- 11:06of negative impulse, really. Ever.
- 11:12For female, this was hard for me yet again.
- 11:17Yeah. But after I wheeled it down, and
- 11:20I may be wrong because I I went back and forth on this one.
- 11:24I chose Mon Mothma. How interesting.
- 11:28Hear me out. Her house is extravagant, her
- 11:32clothes are extravagant. She has all of the luxuries.
- 11:35I don't think she wants any of it.
- 11:37It's all part of a a ruse, right?
- 11:41Yeah, maybe she was brought up in it because she came from.
- 11:43It's the position she was put in, basically.
- 11:46Yeah, if she didn't have it, it would look more questionable.
- 11:51But she could really choose rage.
- 11:56But she doesn't. She could really choose revenge
- 12:01or hate or any of those things, but she keeps a pretty even keel
- 12:07tries to sway towards the good still.
- 12:10I mean, there are some caveats when I chose her, but she was
- 12:14the clearest one for me for females, if I really overthought
- 12:19it, which I definitely did. Yeah, I think she makes sense.
- 12:25I mean, she is. She's kind of a faker, she
- 12:30figured out with it. Yeah, I think her natural state
- 12:33is one of like defending those in in need, you know, caring
- 12:39about those in need. And that is so, like her default
- 12:44is not those negative things. Yeah, I pitched Luminara.
- 12:52What? Hold on, hold on.
- 12:56I have to absorb this. Hang on, Luminara.
- 13:01Yeah, cuz like Yoda, she's just like, she never shows really any
- 13:09cracks. I don't know.
- 13:10Luminara is always so virtuous. So like, she's always tempered.
- 13:17Like she never has heavy emotion, or like a deeply
- 13:22emotional reaction to anything. OK, I can buy this.
- 13:25I don't like her. Everyone knows this, but I can
- 13:27buy this. Well, that's why I think she's
- 13:30she's temperance for sure, because she is.
- 13:35Yeah, Yeah, you're right. You're right.
- 13:37Yeah. Because it's it's not even like
- 13:40her trying to control herself. It's like she's just that, like
- 13:43she's just even like Yoda. And I find Yoda annoying in the
- 13:47same way that I actually find Luminara annoying.
- 13:50Like they're kind of detached. Almost, yes, exactly that.
- 13:54I think that's it. Luminara is so tempered that she
- 13:57was just gonna leave Barris to fucking die.
- 13:59And she's like, it's cool, I'll find another like.
- 14:02Exactly. I'll find another paddle once.
- 14:05It's fine. Life goes on.
- 14:06Yeah, exactly. I hold a grudge against her for
- 14:12that, but if you look at it from the definition, she fits it.
- 14:16She's like Yoda. Yeah, we just we don't have to
- 14:18like our choices. No, absolutely not.
- 14:21No. They're like coworkers.
- 14:23You don't have to like them. You just have to work with them.
- 14:24So you know, they don't have to like these characters.
- 14:28We just have to work with them. Yeah, exactly.
- 14:31Shall we move on to charity? Yes.
- 14:35Charity is held as one of the most excellent of the virtues.
- 14:40It is the habit of charity that extends not only to the love of
- 14:43God, but also to the love of our neighbor.
- 14:47So let's get into this a little further.
- 14:50Really. Charity and love kind of go hand
- 14:52in hand here because you are charitable for love.
- 14:57Like in the end goal is to love thy neighbor, right?
- 14:59So you know, love has other meanings, but in this sense it
- 15:05can also be equated to being charitable, the friendship of
- 15:09man so to speak. So the first thing I thought
- 15:13was. Luke.
- 15:16Because he's always going out of his way.
- 15:20Not and not like a purchasing sense.
- 15:23Not like I'm going to donate this.
- 15:25Yes, that is a form of charity, but he will literally go out of
- 15:29his way to help others and not ask anything in return just
- 15:34because it's the right thing to do.
- 15:36And that is out of love. Love for his fellow creatures.
- 15:41He he went in in the Mandalorian and saved them all.
- 15:44Didn't know a single one of them.
- 15:46Didn't need to. Didn't even know what he was
- 15:49getting into. No, there was just people in
- 15:52need. You know, someone sent a signal
- 15:54or baby Yoda sent one or somebody sent one and and he
- 15:59said, OK, someone's in need, I'll come help.
- 16:01And then of course, when it came to something more personal like
- 16:04Leia and Hot, he's like, I have to, I have to save my friends.
- 16:07Was it hottie at the moment? Yeah, maybe.
- 16:09But he didn't even think twice. Yeah.
- 16:13And he wants to start a new school and do it correctly.
- 16:17He wants to bring others up in a better way than the old Jedi
- 16:21Order did. And you know, it's just his
- 16:24version of love. So that's my male choice.
- 16:28Well, that Tyson. Well, with mine, because the
- 16:30mind's Anakin. Oh, how nice.
- 16:34Tell me more because. When you think of like, yes he's
- 16:38hot headed and and such but. Ultimately, he's really almost
- 16:42always trying to save someone when he's in that state.
- 16:47And he hates injustice, you know?
- 16:50Like that makes him terribly uncomfortable.
- 16:52He always wants to protect, like even think of like the Lurban,
- 16:57you know. Yes.
- 16:58And those little turtle people, whatever they're called.
- 17:02The Felucia people, yeah. I never learned what their
- 17:04species was called, but. No, but they're so great.
- 17:07Yeah, it's the turtle people. The turtle people.
- 17:11They look like little turtles. They.
- 17:13They're like a good examples of how he's not going to he's his
- 17:20hands are a little bit tied, but he does everything that he can
- 17:23to to help those in need. And that kind of ties into my
- 17:27female choice, which is a soca because she's very much the same
- 17:31way. Well, I was tied with Padme and
- 17:34Rio Chuchi as well because they're all just like it's the
- 17:37charity of, yeah. I chose Padme.
- 17:41It's like an obvious choice, right?
- 17:44When you think of someone always trying to give more to people in
- 17:48need, she Padme always comes to my first.
- 17:52I had. I had Leia too.
- 17:55So in essence, all of the Skywalkers, including the
- 17:59adopted daughter of Asoka. Yeah.
- 18:03Which is kind of nice, I mean. Some of them had their faults,
- 18:07but really they did it out of the they did it out of.
- 18:11Now, I would say that Anakin was a little bit selfish when it
- 18:16came to Padme, Padme because like, Oh my God.
- 18:19But yeah, they all just, they went out of their way to save
- 18:24people. I guess that's all the Jedi,
- 18:26too. How can how many times can you
- 18:28think of when Anakin or Asoka said.
- 18:31Like we need to do something, you know, like we have to find a
- 18:35way to help. These people you know and.
- 18:38And not only that, but they taught them to help themselves.
- 18:41Yes. Which, you know, you teach a
- 18:43fisherman to fish. He'll never go hungry again.
- 18:45Or however that phrase goes. So like they taught them how to
- 18:48protect themselves, how to, you know, they even change their
- 18:51thought process on a lot of things.
- 18:55So yeah. Yeah, that.
- 18:58Was a good one. Charity's a good one.
- 19:00There's a lot of that in Star Wars.
- 19:02Yeah, that was an easier one, honestly, that came to mind.
- 19:05A little easier than chastity. Yeah.
- 19:08I mean, yeah. I mean, this next one is is even
- 19:14a little bit weird. The diligence is next diligence
- 19:20is it's, I don't know, I thought this one was interesting.
- 19:24It is carefulness and persistent effort or work.
- 19:28It is not listed as one of the seven heavenly virtues.
- 19:31So this is just one of the. I guess some of the others are.
- 19:35That we've talked about are also heavenly virtues, right?
- 19:38Yeah, diligence is the opposite of sloth in this case.
- 19:42OK, that makes sense. It can be indicative of a work
- 19:46ethic, the belief that work is good in and of itself.
- 19:51So honestly, a lot of people came to mind, but my first
- 19:57person that came to mind was Rex.
- 20:01Me too. Oh, really?
- 20:06Yes. Yes, we both had him.
- 20:08That's great. How funny.
- 20:09I had him. And in parentheses I put any of
- 20:12the clones. Really.
- 20:13But yes. Highlighted Rex.
- 20:15Yes. I mean, it's like what they're
- 20:18always saying, like yes. You know, we're bred for war.
- 20:21But really, they're they're just like the most diligent, amazing,
- 20:27dedicated people. And yes.
- 20:31Yeah, they just just came to my first.
- 20:33Everything about them is always observant and careful and and
- 20:39working. Because when do you ever see a
- 20:42Cologne? Just relaxing pretty much.
- 20:45Never, never. And you think about the bad,
- 20:48bashing it like specifically, they're all in it together and
- 20:52they each have their own, like specialty, right?
- 20:54But they're in it together, and they take pride in what they do
- 20:59and how they do it together as a group, and that could be a
- 21:01larger example of all of the clones.
- 21:05Yeah, exactly. Yes, they're bred for it, like
- 21:08you said, but they want to, they take pride in it.
- 21:12It's. Yeah, and even they protect each
- 21:16other, dare I say, in the Pong Krell arc, where it takes it to
- 21:23a whole new level, where they're not really even.
- 21:28You know, the Republic is looming.
- 21:29They're doing it. They have a job, so to speak,
- 21:31but it's it's like something, it's a pride thing.
- 21:36And anything they do, they do it with, they do it with diligence.
- 21:44They're diligent clones. Yeah.
- 21:47I mean, they have like an honor code and they live by honor, You
- 21:51know, it's their duty and that matters to them.
- 21:54And yes, yeah. Fucking love Rex.
- 21:58I love Rex. God.
- 22:00I'm glad a clone was able to get on our list.
- 22:04Honestly. Yeah, Yes.
- 22:06Yes. Did you have a female choice?
- 22:09I do have a female. I feel pretty good about this
- 22:11one. Go for it, Rio Chucci.
- 22:15Yep, I love it. Mine is also a senator.
- 22:19Oh, who is it? Bail.
- 22:22No, because it's female. It's Mon moth mob.
- 22:25Well, I'm so stupid I forgot we were talking about females
- 22:29because I thought of bail too, but like.
- 22:32Yeah. So you have Mon Mothma, I have
- 22:35Rio. It kind of goes without saying,
- 22:36right? Yeah, I mean, the both of them
- 22:39always knows to the grindstone, right?
- 22:43Just yeah. Again, they're just good humans.
- 22:46Yeah, or humanoid, I guess. Alien, pantorin and human, yes.
- 22:55But they they they stand for something.
- 22:57It's the same thing what they do, they take great pride in and
- 23:00they're diligent about it. I'm.
- 23:01I keep using the word but like. It's true, though there's a
- 23:06great honor code there. Either one of them could sit
- 23:09back on their laurels like other senators do, and even like Mon,
- 23:14Mosma's husband seems to not really give a shit about life at
- 23:18all. True.
- 23:20And and like you said, they're living in luxury as these
- 23:23senators. But you can see that Manmatma
- 23:28never really is not thinking about working for the greater
- 23:32good. It's basically on her mind
- 23:34constantly in Yep, yeah, patience is the next one.
- 23:38And this is interesting because it's not what I think A lot of
- 23:42people think. This one goes a word.
- 23:44This is a word study. Patience or forbearance, is the
- 23:50ability to endure difficult circumstances.
- 23:54Patients may involve perseverance in the face of
- 23:56delay, tolerance of provocation without responding with
- 24:00disrespect or anger. Forbearance went under strain,
- 24:04especially when faced with longterm difficulties or being
- 24:08able to wait for a long time without getting irritated or
- 24:10bored. So I'm out.
- 24:16Patience is also used to refer to the character trait of being
- 24:19steadfast now. All of these are there are so
- 24:24many characters that have had to endure difficult circumstances,
- 24:29persevere tolerance, you know, all of these things.
- 24:35Because that's like Star Wars. I mean, that's just, that's Star
- 24:41Wars. So my only male choice that the
- 24:45only one I could say I can't, I have to put him down and
- 24:48everyone else comes second is motherfucking Obi Wan Kenobi.
- 24:52Same. Same.
- 24:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. The poor man.
- 24:59I mean not. Only did he deal with Anakin for
- 25:02how many years? But also he just we've talked
- 25:05about how much horrible shit has happened and he's done nothing
- 25:10but endured loss after loss. Yeah, after loss.
- 25:16Without being corrupted or saying something mean or
- 25:21correct, letting it change his good nature?
- 25:23Yeah, that's correct. And that's what makes it
- 25:25patience, right? Yes, he's steadfast.
- 25:31He perseveres. I mean, I think perseverance is
- 25:35a great thing and he like, defines that.
- 25:39Yeah, I think so too. He's like the only.
- 25:43Like, obviously, yes, there are many patient characters in Star
- 25:47Wars, but he is the poster child for it.
- 25:51Yes? Now, who's your female?
- 25:55I picked Hara. Interesting.
- 25:59I picked Leia. Now I know that she gets
- 26:01irritable, but she she wanes out of that.
- 26:06She has had tremendous loss over and over and difficulties same
- 26:12as Hara. These are two generals.
- 26:15And they've both lost their homes, their families, and
- 26:19continue to persevere with grace and kindness.
- 26:23Yeah. And understanding for other
- 26:25people, you know? Yeah, I think Leah's an
- 26:29excellent choice. I mean, think of how Alderon was
- 26:31blown up right in front of her and then she got right back to
- 26:34work. If that's not Patience, I don't
- 26:36know what is right. And Hera too.
- 26:38She lost her husband while she was pregnant.
- 26:41Spoiler alert. I hope we're all caught up on
- 26:45this, but like, she got right back to work.
- 26:48Yeah, yeah. Good choice these these people
- 26:53are amazing. If I could only be 1/4 of what
- 26:58these characters are. Told me about Jesus.
- 27:03Now the next one ooh, the next one's kindness.
- 27:07How do we even choose? But I'm.
- 27:10I'm excited to talk about this one.
- 27:12Yeah, kindness is is classic Star Wars.
- 27:16Kindness is a type of behavior marked by acts of generosity,
- 27:20consideration, rendering assistance or concern for others
- 27:25without without expecting praise or reward in return.
- 27:30Wow, saying reward and return is very difficult for me, yes.
- 27:35Who did you have Because, like so many people could, I know.
- 27:40Well, my first one was Luke, but then I chose another one because
- 27:43Luke is like. Yeah, Luke is my choice.
- 27:47Is it OK? Yeah, because, I mean, he's even
- 27:50sweet to droids who irritate him.
- 27:52I know, I know. My other choice was Mando Din
- 28:00Jardin, no. And the reason I chose him was
- 28:04because he started off as a like a bounty hunter doing things for
- 28:09a bounty. And he's very kind.
- 28:13He turns away from that and starts making friendships, doing
- 28:17things for for he develops a bond with Grogu.
- 28:22He develops a bond with a lot of random people and and creatures,
- 28:27and he's very kind. He's kind to that civilization
- 28:30that he helped, like protect themselves.
- 28:33Like those natives. Yeah, very kind of Grogu.
- 28:36And like he's he has a very kind disposition to him, and it's
- 28:39getting more developed the farther away he gets from like,
- 28:44that bounty hunter beginning. Yeah, that's a really nice
- 28:47choice. He has a very gentle
- 28:50disposition, I think. He does and and Grogu has
- 28:53softened him like considerably and shown him that there are
- 28:56other ways to exist than just bounty hunter ways.
- 29:01You know, yeah. And he doesn't.
- 29:02He doesn't ask for anything in return.
- 29:03It like he's been offered, like here's a plot of land and he's
- 29:06like, no, I don't. I don't need that.
- 29:08I don't want that. I just want to, you know, he
- 29:10takes it. But you know, he doesn't really
- 29:12ask for anything, which is the exact opposite of a bounty
- 29:15hunter, which I think is great. It's character growth.
- 29:16So exactly, yes. Who did you have for female?
- 29:21I have a soca. Oh, that's nice.
- 29:24I have Leia, and just Luke and Leia to me are just getting this
- 29:27personified. But a Soca really is.
- 29:30She really is kind. She doesn't ever ask for
- 29:33anything in return. Ever.
- 29:35Yeah, wasn't her quote. Like, if I see someone in need,
- 29:39there's no question I'm I'm helping them.
- 29:41And like, she doesn't. She doesn't want praise, she
- 29:45doesn't want gifts. She just walks away and goes on
- 29:47to the next the next person or people that need help.
- 29:51Yeah, because it's it's basically she does it because
- 29:53it's the right thing to do, not because.
- 29:55Correct. She she never has an agenda and
- 29:58most Jedi don't, which is just like Luke and it's just like
- 30:01Leia. It's just like Hera Mon mothma
- 30:05Rio. Should we keep going?
- 30:07Yeah, seriously. Yeah, Leia's a good one too.
- 30:11I mean, she's she is kindness. She's a little sassy, but that's
- 30:15her personality. It doesn't stop her.
- 30:18Well, think of her with with wicked the evil.
- 30:22Oh God, I know. You know, like that seemed to
- 30:25me. And the way she's so kind and
- 30:27sweet and gentle and knowing that.
- 30:30That he's a little afraid of her, but trying to, like, put
- 30:33him at ease and take the time. Unlike Luke who got really
- 30:37frustrated with Yoda, you know, like Leah is calm and gentle and
- 30:42like, lets him be goofy. And yeah, I I just.
- 30:47I like that they're good folks. All of them.
- 30:50Yeah. And lastly is humility.
- 30:55Humility is the quality of being humble.
- 30:58Dictionary definitions accentuate humility as low self
- 31:01regard or self sense of unworthiness.
- 31:04But in a religious context humility can mean a recognition
- 31:07of self in relation to a deity and subsequent submission to
- 31:12that deity as a member of the religion.
- 31:13But outside of this this, this is like what I went off of.
- 31:18Humility is defined as being unselved, which is liberated
- 31:21from consciousness of self, which is a form of temperance
- 31:24that is neither having pride nor indulging in self deprecation.
- 31:29And I think that is important because self not indulging in
- 31:33self deprecation or a sense of unworthiness is really, really
- 31:37important here. Yes, this is my favorite one
- 31:40because the definition is so unexpected.
- 31:44I think people think they know what humility, what humility is.
- 31:48But again, when you dig into the meaning, it's a little more
- 31:51interesting. I found a really good definition
- 31:55that I wanted to read. It's from positive psychology
- 31:59and I just it like hit the nail on the head.
- 32:02So well, I wanted to share it. Let's have it.
- 32:05So it says. But humility has nothing to do
- 32:08with meekness or weakness, and neither does it mean being self
- 32:12effacing or submissive. Humility is an attitude of
- 32:15spiritual modesty that comes from understanding our place in
- 32:19the larger order of things. It entails not taking our
- 32:23desires, successes or failings too seriously.
- 32:27It's not just humble. It's like being willing to serve
- 32:32a greater good or a higher purpose.
- 32:35Accepting that you're part of a larger plan, basically, yes.
- 32:41Well, I mean, it could be any of the people we already talked
- 32:43about. Yeah.
- 32:46So who do you have? I have Gin and Cassian.
- 32:51They're perfect. They're actually perfect for
- 32:53this, yeah. Because I think at first you
- 32:55would be like, what? But if you go by the definition
- 32:59of understanding, you're a cog in a wheel, like a part of a
- 33:03bigger cycle. They both reach that point by
- 33:06the end of Rogue One, and they're willing to die for a
- 33:09bigger, to like serve a greater good, to stop the Death Star
- 33:13from killing anymore innocent people.
- 33:16That, to me is humility. It's funny that you have a
- 33:21couple because I also have a couple.
- 33:23Oh, do you? Who do you have?
- 33:26Canaan and Hara. I love it.
- 33:29It's so good. I just, it's for the same
- 33:33reason. I mean, Canaan literally
- 33:36sacrificed himself for the greater good and he lost so
- 33:43much. I mean, he lost his fucking
- 33:45vision, which he gave up doing the same exact thing, and he
- 33:50turned it around and made it something better, you know, it
- 33:56was he was totally selfless. He loved the people he was
- 34:00around. But I think that the thing it's
- 34:02just like Gin and Cassian. There's a much larger thing at
- 34:05work, and I don't think Canaan and Hara ever lost that either.
- 34:10No. Isn't there even a moment
- 34:13between them where they they don't?
- 34:15Well, Canaan's like, what are we going to do after the war's over
- 34:19and she's like, I don't even. I don't even know.
- 34:21Like, I haven't even given any thought.
- 34:23Because they're even though they have this love for each other,
- 34:26they serve a bigger purpose of the rebellion and trying to
- 34:30protect those who can't fight for themselves.
- 34:33So, right. Yeah, Perfect example of
- 34:36humility. Canaan could have let what
- 34:39happened with him during Order 66 destroy him.
- 34:42He could have let his blindness destroy him.
- 34:46Never stopped him. It's the same thing with,
- 34:49especially gin. Yeah, because she didn't start
- 34:54in the in Rogue One. I wouldn't say she was a person
- 34:57who exhibited humility at all, but by the time she got to that,
- 35:01she was transforming the whole time.
- 35:03Every step of Rogue One basically was one more change in
- 35:08her until she got to the point where totally she didn't need
- 35:11to. Like whatever happened to her,
- 35:13she kind of didn't care anymore, but at least now she had
- 35:16something she could do that would be positive.
- 35:20And I think that's, I think that's the lesson here with
- 35:23humility, is that I don't think anyone's born with it.
- 35:26You take what's been given to you or what's happened and your
- 35:30path, and you make a choice and you then devote yourself to
- 35:34something greater than what has happened to you, or what took
- 35:40place in your personal path, or or journey or whatever.
- 35:45I think it's hard. Because this, I mean, look at
- 35:48these characters, how much they they literally give their lives.
- 35:53Three out of four of them, yeah. And that's a huge sacrifice to
- 35:58offer. But ultimately, isn't that like
- 36:01when you think of religion? A lot of times it asks you to
- 36:05give your life, like put your life into the hands of a higher
- 36:09power and have that kind of humility towards the higher
- 36:12power and. It's it's scary.
- 36:16But then when you think of these characters, you see how noble it
- 36:20is, like how noble they are in their sacrifice.
- 36:23I don't know. I think it's it's a tricky one.
- 36:26But also I really enjoyed that one because it was not what I
- 36:29expected. I thought it was just going to
- 36:31be humble and it's not. It's not just being humble.
- 36:34If it was just humbleness, I would choose like Schmid for
- 36:38instance. Oh yeah, all the terrible things
- 36:41she went through. But she always kept us like a
- 36:44kind of grace about her and patience and all these other
- 36:47things we've talked about. Yeah, and even though she was
- 36:51being put in horrific circumstances like slavery,
- 36:55still tried to raise her son with good values.
- 36:59Yeah, well, that was interesting.
- 37:05So, so much different than the seven deadly sins, yeah.
- 37:12It's it's interesting that it's harder to talk about virtue.
- 37:16That's what a cultural study that could be.
- 37:21That is I well, it's like you said, you got to study the term.
- 37:26It's not as obvious, which I thought for sure it would be.
- 37:29I'll be like, oh, that's Leia, oh, that's Luke, blah, blah,
- 37:31blah, blah, blah. But it's like it's not it's not
- 37:34that easy. There's some that there's
- 37:37there's nuances about these. Yeah, exactly so.
- 37:42That was fun. I like doing this kind of stuff
- 37:44where we kind of this was, this was and and listen, we heard you
- 37:48guys when it came to the Seven Deadly Sins, you really liked
- 37:51it. So I hope you all enjoy this
- 37:54version as well. Maybe we'll find some other
- 37:57things like this to do when it comes to the characters of Star
- 38:00Wars in the future. Yeah, if anyone has suggestions,
- 38:03send them our way cuz let us know.
- 38:06We love this kind of stuff. So next week's episode we will
- 38:13be reviewing the last two episodes of the Asoka show.
- 38:18We'll be giving our thoughts and opinions and discussing all
- 38:21everything about it. So we're I don't know if we're
- 38:24going to keep up this every two episode, but we're feeling
- 38:27pretty good about things. So we're going to, we're going
- 38:29to go with the episodes 3:00 and 4:00.
- 38:31We'll discuss those from the Asoka Show next week.
- 38:35So join us. So last week we reviewed Asoka
- 38:41episode one and two, and we asked our listeners how they
- 38:43would rate it on a scale from 1:00 to 10:00 and why.
- 38:47And we got a couple, a couple responses on our Spotify.
- 38:51If you didn't know, you can respond to our questions
- 38:53directly on Spotify, but you can always send it to us via social
- 38:56media. So Ainsley said a nine.
- 39:00I love Asoka as a character and it's interesting to see another
- 39:03part of her life unfolding. I also think of returning to the
- 39:06Rebel storyline was fun. I'm excited to know what happens
- 39:09next. And Alexandra said 7.5.
- 39:13I really enjoyed it but was confused about Sabine Jeni
- 39:16training same true. However, I'm cautiously
- 39:21optimistic since Dave Filoni is heavily involved, that it will
- 39:24all make sense eventually. Yeah, same pretty much.
- 39:30And our friend and patron Kevin also rated it an 8 out of 10,
- 39:34same as you and I basically. So thank you all for responding.
- 39:38And in fact we got a response to our Seven Deadly Sins episode.
- 39:43Our friends, our spirit animals over at Conversations said that
- 39:49they said something we didn't even think of.
- 39:51Yeah, for for sloth, they said. Luke In The Last Jedi at the
- 39:57beginning, basically through through, you know.
- 40:00When Ray first meets him, and that is so true.
- 40:04Yeah, cuz like we discussed, sloth is not laziness.
- 40:07It's kind of like no longer caring, right?
- 40:10Yeah. And that that was it.
- 40:12Yeah, I I I was. My jaw fell when I read that
- 40:16from them. I was like, that is so
- 40:17brilliant. It's so brilliant and accurate
- 40:20and accurate. So you know what?
- 40:22Thanks everybody. We love you all and you make
- 40:25this fun for us. So thanks for for joining in
- 40:28with us. Thank you so much for joining us
