- 3:46means I'm trying not to repeat anybody before me, so it's kind of a
- 3:50lot of pressure. But all right. My name is Rod aka. I
- 3:55do a podcast called the Blackout Tests. I call it Roderick and Shorty.
- 4:00Some of y'all gotta stop being the Cascade because y'all scaring the whole Corga is
- 4:03the fade Runner twentyty nine, Aaron Jagomus to the Third Eye, Evolutionary and
- 4:10Rod gets wrecks. No Coon over here. So happy to be back on
- 4:14a spaceship. I was waiting for the no Coon win. All right,
- 4:21Yes, welcome. As you can tell, we are talking about Guardians of
- 4:25the Galaxy Volume three. This will be a pretty much spoiler field review.
- 4:30If you haven't seen it yet, you might want to. We're not gonna
- 4:32get too too deep, though, but you know we're going to talk about
- 4:35it. We've all seen it. I've now seen it twice. I think
- 4:39a few of the other panelists have also seen it more than once. Overall
- 4:44feelings, I'll just say right off the top, it is after seeing it
- 4:49twice, especially, it is now one of my I think the Guardians trilogy
- 4:55is now up there with Captain America's trilogy for being the best in the MCU,
- 5:00and this third one is a fine finish to this trilogy. It's a
- 5:05great film. I have a few small knitpicks with it, but overall,
- 5:09it's just it's a really good ass movie. Anyone else, Yeah, I
- 5:17agree. I think it was around It trilogy to your point. I think
- 5:23the only trilogy that did justice to that level is the Captain America trilogy.
- 5:30I was shocked in a good way at how serious the movie was while still
- 5:34making me laugh, and I thought it was great the first time we all
- 5:39got to see it in Imax, and it was definitely an Imax movie,
- 5:45and it was a space movie that wasn't afraid of color, wasn't afraid of
- 5:48like testing different things, and it reminded me a lot of like Rick and
- 5:55Morty with like the fleshy type tech with like I loved it. I love
- 6:00the creativity all through it, and I felt I felt proud as a DC
- 6:04fan watching all these now DC workers give y'all such a good last hurrah.
- 6:12Before they did, I was just like, yeah, it felt good.
- 6:17It felt good. I was like, look at my baby, he's about
- 6:19to cook up All Stars Superman on this level. I can't wait. Definitely
- 6:25made me excited for James Gunn. So don't even say, ain't hoping pray
- 6:29that. I mean, you know it's gonna be fired man, But I
- 6:31don't think he's doing an All Star but that you know that would be a
- 6:33dream. But yeah, so yeah, it definitely made me excited for James
- 6:38Gunn taking over DC. Like it was like cool like between us and that
- 6:42Blue Beetle trailer, it was like, yeah, I'm excited for DC movies
- 6:46again. And I didn't know that was possible just a few years ago.
- 6:49I've been trying to tell y'all, man, we're talking about DC when this
- 6:57is a Marvel movie. Why anyway? So why don't we act like it's
- 7:02not tied? And within the time these two together is James Gunn? Who
- 7:11I think job? I think James Gunn did an amazing job. Don't get
- 7:14me wrong. I think did an incredible job I did. I do think
- 7:16it's the best of the three movies. I definitely think it rounded everything else,
- 7:20did a very good good job of um pulling from actually multiple places including
- 7:28Disney Plus. Had a little bit of nods to the Group series, a
- 7:30little bit of nods to the Christmas Special. There are things that came out
- 7:35that And I do think that anybody who went to see this movie and got
- 7:39confused probably hasn't seen like the previous movies or the Disney Plus stuff. Because
- 7:46I had I had a few people ask me some questions. I'm like,
- 7:47did you use the Christmas special? And if you didn't, there were some
- 7:50Easter eggs in there for you as well. Effects amazing. The effects were
- 7:55so good in this movie. I was stunned that this is the same studio
- 7:59that did Ant Man because those effects were not that good, That's what I'm
- 8:03saying. So it was and maybe it is a control thing. Maybe it's
- 8:07possible for a gun when he worked, or maybe because it was his last
- 8:11raw. I don't know, but he might have had complete control over everything,
- 8:13whereas I think sometimes with some of the other Marvel movies the directors have
- 8:20to answer to a bunch of different people. This felt cohesive from not just
- 8:24effects but color execution from beginning to end. And that's good storytelling, you
- 8:31know. Uh. I like Ben liked it Ben at the second time.
- 8:35Um, And the music was also amazing. But we'll get into some other
- 8:41stuff that I like after, So I'll let y'all cook on that one,
- 8:46because that's so. I was actually gonna say that too. Like one of
- 8:52the misses for me was the music, but for a different reason, and
- 8:56it might be different reasons, and Ben would say, but um, I
- 9:00agree with most of the sentiments here. I thought this was a wonderful ending
- 9:05for a trilogy, and I think that's what puts it in the conversation as
- 9:09one of not the best trilogy in the MCU, because we finally got something
- 9:15consistent, you know, we have something that like has a beginning, middle,
- 9:18and an end. It's the same voice, the same tone. I've
- 9:22said even in my review, this is the James gunniest you know, movie
- 9:26that he's ever made. It's everything that if you've seen his work the same
- 9:31way you can identify Tarantino like you can identify James Gunn in this movie.
- 9:37He cares about the characters, sometimes even to a fault, but you can
- 9:43never deny the fact that every character matters, all the emotions. You know,
- 9:48you can feel him. And I mean again like this is what you
- 9:50go to the movies for. You want to be able to feel for the
- 9:54characters. And I mean he definitely did that with Rocket Story, you know.
- 9:56And I do have some nitpicks, but overall, great movie, good
- 10:01sign for the MCU UM at least for now, and you know, post
- 10:03pandemic era. But yeah, and this is giving me confidence for his future
- 10:09in the DC you as well. Yeah, it felt like a return to
- 10:13form from Marvel movies to me, like it's been a minute since a movie
- 10:18really made me feel like this and completely immersed me in the experience. Um,
- 10:22everyone's talking about this like Marvel the studio, But I'm like, maybe
- 10:28Peyton read not that great at CGI. I don't know, like like it
- 10:33could be him, you know what I'm saying. They asked him to do
- 10:35a lot, considering ant Man started from a grounded reality, earth based thing
- 10:39to like create your own system and universe. Like that's a lot to ask
- 10:45people. Um, But also like it was so funny and still sad,
- 10:52Like it still made me cry, it still had a lot of heart.
- 10:54Um, the fact that they were able to do this film and not kill
- 10:58off any main characters. Because I was seeing the trailers, I was like,
- 11:01yeah, they I've been reading these articles and these interviews. These people
- 11:05want out of these roles. They fitting to die. We're gonna be crying.
- 11:09But like the new Rocket was gonna catch it. I just knew it
- 11:11for real. Like when I saw him get hurt so early, I was
- 11:16like, it's not him. Um, because he got hurt so early in
- 11:20the movie. I was like that don't make sense. I'm with you,
- 11:22But then it felt Josh weed and s when the whole like he's we brought
- 11:28him back. Oh wait a minute, does one more thing we didn't think
- 11:31of? I said, Oh, don't do this, don't do this,
- 11:33James. The only time I was sweating for a rocket was when they was
- 11:37like fighting over his body. Yeah, doll around that ship. I was
- 11:48had had no laying down. They had me worried about rocket until like the
- 11:54last frame because I like there's a point at the end where he's like I
- 11:58got to fight this man to say these little bay Roc coups. I said,
- 12:01Oh, and that's how he gonna die, because it's his arc has
- 12:03come full circle. Like James is a beast dog. He really had me
- 12:07like same thing with Peacemaker, Like, dude, really be having me like
- 12:11laughing at the silliness of these characters in this world. And then he'll just
- 12:16have like gravertize and shout out to Bradley Cooper, who you know with that
- 12:20face, it's still just being a voice actor and act actually acting, not
- 12:26showing up and just being a voice and sounding like Bradley Cooper. And he's
- 12:30done it. For several years at this point, and I'm extremely impressed with
- 12:33that performance. Definitely one of the best Zoes All Donna performances I've ever saw.
- 12:39She hasn't Yeah, she hasn't been as good as makeup since Nina's Amme
- 12:45movie. Oh like she disappeared into the role. So I was very impressed
- 12:50with her. Um And I can't not start by just giving props to or
- 12:56can't end this without giving props to the brother that played the high evolutionary got
- 13:00damn, that's a village. That's what I want from my villains. The
- 13:03other DC actor, he was good. I didn't James had the guts to
- 13:11kill off Rocket though. I mean because like a lot of these characters,
- 13:13like he'll kill off side characters, right, but like the main character,
- 13:18he identifies with that character. I mean, this is he admits this stuff,
- 13:22right, he identifies with Rocket. Rocket stories kind of like his story
- 13:26in a sense. He ain't gonna kill them off. Dog. You know,
- 13:30if you ever left a job, it's like, that's y'all mess,
- 13:33you know. I remember I quit McDonald's in the middle of a shift one
- 13:37time, and I walked out and got in my car, and it was
- 13:39a mess all in the front lobbya that McDonald's. I didn't clear carre and
- 13:43I didn't clean it up because it's not my job no more. I'm going
- 13:48back to school. And I feel like James could have hit us with like
- 13:50yo U, especially knowing like how you feel about the Batista and how Zoe
- 13:56was doing the interviews. He could have easily just been like, you know
- 13:58what, dog, let me help. Coming with me was done. Honestly,
- 14:05he should have been done. That was the only person that I said
- 14:09he should have said. When they brought him back, I was pissed.
- 14:11I was like no. And then in the very end, the post post
- 14:15credit scene when they said you will see star Lord again, every y'all remember
- 14:18everybody our first the first time we saw it, everything theater was like no,
- 14:22No, I didn't. I didn't know that. I've never been up
- 14:28to star Lord Hayter Camp. I've never under no, No, it's not
- 14:31a star Lord Hayter Camp. I'm not even talking about that, even though
- 14:35I personally I am not a fan of the actor, but that's not what
- 14:37this is about. I see his purpose in everything in Guardians, and it
- 14:41was and he's played an incredible role, and he's created a really good character.
- 14:46But the way he had him out there floating in space no oxygen,
- 14:52freezing with his eyes going to two different directions to go right, I thought
- 14:58that, and then and then having um Um Warlock, who under used but
- 15:03we'll get there bring him in. It would have been like a nice handoff.
- 15:09But instead it's like, oh, that was really cool. I'm like,
- 15:11no, you should yeah, but also I'm good for that. I
- 15:15wouldn't wanted that movie to end with the death of Peter Quill like that would
- 15:18have been you know, that's just unnecessary sadness to the end of this film,
- 15:22especially after his realization and the fact that he grew the fact that he
- 15:26finally realized Joe I can't and that that would have like nullified that scene with
- 15:31Gomra, which I like, if y'all, if if they had given Zoe,
- 15:35I mean they've given her like maybe twenty seconds more, two more lines,
- 15:41that ship would have been up there, you know, like with where
- 15:43I mean, not up there with Angela, but she would have started pushing
- 15:46for that best supporting Antra' role because she eats in that. I thought,
- 15:54yeah, no, but that's what I'm saying if they've given her a little
- 15:56more time, you could have the nods for the start coming in, you
- 15:58know, because just just she has enough time to get a best supporting natural,
- 16:02you know. And just so just so I'm clear, the scene you're
- 16:04talking about is the scene where she hits him and she's like, what am
- 16:07I doing? Okay, no, because that was my scene to him.
- 16:11But I also love the fact that gave this this universe agency like why because
- 16:18he was getting very creepy, like Okay, you don't love me now,
- 16:22but you could, and it's like, yeah, now you're getting and then
- 16:26and they all they all were checking him on that. But before we go
- 16:30into this, I did have a question because Rod brought it up earlier as
- 16:33well, about how like this is one of the best movies we've seen in
- 16:37a while, and I agree, And I wonder if a piece of that
- 16:41is maybe the guardrails that come went Marvel and stuff like that, because this
- 16:45is another movie where the main characters are assist white Man um that this is
- 16:51what they know how to do. Even though Rocket is an animal, it's
- 16:56Bradley Cooper, you know what I'm saying, Like, and so you know
- 16:59they can hit so they can handle animals and aliens back. Okay. We've
- 17:02also like the other thing is you've had you know, Ryan Cooler having a
- 17:06deal before he had to deal with so it ain't like he had to make
- 17:07the happy film that everybody can come out of, like, hey, you
- 17:11know, he wasn't making that film, So like I know, I'm besides
- 17:15that. You had, like you said, you have Peyton Reid, who
- 17:18you know, did serviceable ship with aunt Man. But when you hand them
- 17:22some shit like a Man three, it's like, you know, yeah,
- 17:26I was hoping because they gave him aunt Man three, but seeing the track
- 17:32record, you know, it was like I shouldn't have some of the you
- 17:37know, coke. It kind of bounces out because because there's so many cists
- 17:41white dudes that are the main characters, the bad ones be having them too,
- 17:45Like yeah, like it's too many for it to be like shit.
- 17:48A matter of fact, if they could only hit on every cyst, like
- 17:52they'd be batting like ninety some percent. So it's like clearly, clearly it's
- 18:00James johnn James John has done this straight through, you know. And also
- 18:03I do want to shout out in Nicole Perman Perlman, who was the screenwriter
- 18:10co screenwriter on the first one and really helped establish it, and she does
- 18:14not get the credit she deserves for establishing and making these characters who they are
- 18:18today because after that James John, it's like, you know, everything's interdirecting
- 18:22by James John, you know, and that's the end of story. And
- 18:25you know, so shout out to Nicole Perlman because as an achievement the third
- 18:30this being the trilogy, the third one. I don't know how y'all felt,
- 18:33but when they announced the first Guardians of the Galaxy, I remember being
- 18:37like, Okay, all right, Marvel, calm down. I don't think
- 18:41I don't think the world is ready for this, because they had up until
- 18:45then it had been like one name heroes that we all know, and they
- 18:48like, yeah, the talking raccoon, talking tree that can only say I'm
- 18:52grew. And it's like Steph Curry heat checked from the half court line level
- 18:56of shot, were you like, if y'all hit this, then there's really
- 18:59nothing. No. I can never tell y'all. And to think those characters
- 19:03have arked out this far into the future where we're in the third one and
- 19:06all like, this is amazing. We were crying at a CGI raccoon sitting
- 19:11on people's laps and stuff. That's a that's amazing and the power of what
- 19:15like good cinema can do so props it down. I also knew, like
- 19:18I was one of I wasn't um I was unsure about Guardians, but I
- 19:25wasn't unsure about James John because he had this movie Slither that is one of
- 19:29my favorite tracks, and Slither is sci fi horror and comedy, so I
- 19:34knew in black and dark comedy and some of the most brutal shit where like
- 19:40one of my favorite scenes is like a dude, it's like, you know,
- 19:41go on without me because he's injured, and the dude shoots Him's like
- 19:45okay, you know, it keeps moving. And so I was like when
- 19:48they announced him and knowing I think it's an Abnett who wrote The Guardians the
- 19:52modern version of it, Dan Abnett, and brought all these characters together and
- 19:56all that. So I was pretty sure or you know, because James I
- 20:02just I think the first announcing before you even heard who was attached to it.
- 20:06Well, I remember thinking the same thing because because Agents of Shield was
- 20:12out Agents of Shield every week was known for like going and digging in the
- 20:17crates and pulling out a character that it was only used like two or three
- 20:19times. So I'm like, oh, they're gonna try and do this.
- 20:22When with the first Guardians movie, I remember thinking they're gonna try and do
- 20:26Agent of Shield. Like a lot of us who wear comics know these characters,
- 20:29but most people are like who. So I thought that was but again,
- 20:33did it, did it well, made it his own And this movie
- 20:37really ended in arc very well. And I agree with what everybody was saying
- 20:40about Zoe. For a actress that was paid the least of all these all
- 20:45her co stars, she did an amazing job. Oh my goodness. Still,
- 20:48wow, that's crazy. That's kind of crazy. Manager would not be
- 20:53in this movie. Here's the thing. I don't know when that extended to
- 20:56this movie, but definitely before this movie, she was the least paid out
- 21:00of all of the say it hasn't her rap gone up? Ye argue for
- 21:07you baby. I was like fire her team at this boy, he must
- 21:17have got to pay increase by now, because I'm sure I feel like I
- 21:19feel like Scar Joe. Scar Joe made sure that that wasn't happening to no
- 21:23more women in the universe because she made She was like, uh so,
- 21:29I hope that. I hope that all the ladies of the Marvel universe are
- 21:32getting get star Joe got that indeterminate bad boy. It's like, you don't
- 21:34even know what type of money it is. It's just like she lokey the
- 21:37reason why er perlo ain't got a job. She was like, they like
- 21:42me, they like you, all right. Something else that I wanted to
- 21:47talk about could be mentioned more, but like, you know, my other
- 21:49favorite, and you know my pretty much been my favorite since day one,
- 21:53is Nebula, And I mean this is just you know, another example like
- 21:59when she showed up when she goes and grabs a vest and comes up like
- 22:03you know, she's out of some anime with the arm and you know,
- 22:07goes to work on Warlock. I was in heaven. I just think Karen
- 22:11does the character so well and her journey, And that was the thing.
- 22:15It's all the Guardians have such distinct arcs throughout this movie and throughout like even
- 22:22some of the like because a lot of people don't relate to and I understand
- 22:25why. It's who has some issues and it definitely has you know, the
- 22:29James Gunn the terrible side of it, you know, where it's like his
- 22:33dad's kind of a rapist and kind of you know, it's like there's a
- 22:36lot of weirdness going on in that right. But I think it even corrected
- 22:40that because I didn't realize how he used drags in the second one. I
- 22:41felt like they make dracts to be too much of an idiot. Yeah,
- 22:45and it's just like they played them for jokes, and I felt like they
- 22:48somewhat redeemed that in this one by giving him this arc and just even the
- 22:52little touches. How it begins with him streaming on Mantis like only in idiot
- 22:57dances, and then at the end of it, he's breaking into a full
- 23:00dance. Like Rob was saying, like it was that shit. By that
- 23:03moment when Rouge started dancing, I'm ball and dark. I was losing it.
- 23:07The second time I saw it, like straight up losing it. I
- 23:11felt like they were changing drags into instead of him being dumb, he was
- 23:15like incapable of certain complex thoughts. Yeah, you know what I mean,
- 23:21Where it was like it's not that he's dumb, it's just like this is
- 23:25deep stut Like he was like, I don't know that. I didn't know
- 23:27you were capable of an analogy. And I was like, Okay, this
- 23:33is the stuff I want to hear. Not that he's just like someone just
- 23:37being vapid or like just making mistakes. It was like, oh, maybe
- 23:41he's incapable of actually making these decisions or deciphering what's right or what's wrong,
- 23:47because in the first film he couldn't understand, Like he just couldn't. He
- 23:49couldn't do figurative, dn't get metaphors, he didn't get stuff like that.
- 23:56And that was cool to me. The way he kind like came on the
- 24:00scene. He was just focused. He was like you were stands. I
- 24:03want the smoke. That's it. They had time for nothing else. And
- 24:07that's Hey, that makes sense because I always read it them as a D
- 24:12and D group and so as a barbarian? Why is he dying? Right?
- 24:17You know what I mean? And to your point in the second movie,
- 24:19I was like, is he a barbarian or is he just And they
- 24:22didn't even yeah back then, like he was a special to like show like,
- 24:32yeah, he was putting in the work to Adam, Yeah he was.
- 24:34He was putting in at work like he got he got worked. But
- 24:37like I was like, that was a great way to me because they scaled
- 24:41Drags and then they also scaled um Adam at the same time because they showed
- 24:48like Adam is having a really hard is just fucking up everybody, and then
- 24:52like Drags came in and was giving him problems for a very long time.
- 24:56I was like, all right, this is a strong man. I'm seeing
- 24:59this or like him opening up the doors to be I can't believe you didn't
- 25:03like the soundtrack the BC Boy you know, like, Okay, well we'll
- 25:07get to that. I get it. You know, some people have only
- 25:10heard one BC Boys song. We all like, it's not that, but
- 25:15it's like why popular songs are popular for the reason. Right, we're gonna
- 25:22go the Okay, you're telling me that song go there. Okay, I'm
- 25:29telling you that joint don't rock. And I'm also okay and all right,
- 25:32wait wait we're gonna go there. We're gonna go there, right, all
- 25:33right, then let me let me get this okay. Over three movies,
- 25:36James John has now done eighties, nineties, and two thousands, and he
- 25:40has had one hip hop song by one white group and the most off their
- 25:45first album, like their most obvious choice song. Right now, you're saying
- 25:49the eighties, nineties, and two thousands, because it's done from the perspective
- 25:52a white man. I'll give you that. Yeah, it's also wait,
- 25:56let me let me finish, let me finish, please, all right,
- 25:59let me finished? Right, it's done from his perspective, So that's him.
- 26:03But when you have something that represents these decades where hip hop became the
- 26:07dominant form of music, you gotta give it a little something. And the
- 26:11difference between someone's like a James Dunn and someone like a Quentin Tarantino. When
- 26:15it comes to music and film, it's print and Tarantino will take film songs
- 26:18that are much more obscure and then make them popular, even in something like
- 26:23Stranger Themes, which takes Karen Bush right, a random eighties song, not
- 26:30the most obvious one, Kate Bush, see how much I know, and
- 26:33then makes it huge. Right, it doesn't have to be the obvious choice.
- 26:38And BC Boys, going back to them, you got licensed to ill
- 26:44straight classic all the way through every song on there you could have chosen,
- 26:48So why that one? Why is it that the only way let me now,
- 26:52then I'll be done with this. Four BC Boys songs, Fight for
- 26:56Your Right, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Sabotage, Intergalactic only ones ever used
- 27:04in philm I'm done, Okay, I think to to one. To Carol's
- 27:12point, I was not expecting hip hop from James Gunn that was number one,
- 27:19right. I wasn't expecting. I was maybe the Fresh Friends. I
- 27:25wouldn't heard that. Michael, Okay, you know, but we were dominant.
- 27:32Look, I don't think things done. Even if they were dominant,
- 27:34doesn't mean that that was his experience. And this is so I think.
- 27:40But he's playing here's playlist. But then to that point, um, the
- 27:45music fit. I get there may be better choices, but to me,
- 27:51the music fit. Not everybody, but not everybody is big right into music
- 27:59in that way. For me, Florence's Dog Days got me. I was
- 28:02like, you know what, I fu with Florence's Machine. I love her
- 28:04work ethic. I think her music is incredible. I was watching it and
- 28:08yo, y'all laughing. I heard her sing take care, I was weeping
- 28:11once uh the show behind her. I just in that way, I was
- 28:18like, there was not one song that they played. Maybe maybe I'm not
- 28:22a big Beastie Boys U snob, so I didn't care which Basty Boys song
- 28:26they played. I thought no Sleep to Brooklyn. I immediately thought of the
- 28:30Warriors, and I was like, oh, they about to travel through a
- 28:33long like and started fighting people all the way up to the high Evolutionary.
- 28:38That's what I thought about. Okay, So none of that worked for me.
- 28:42None of that worked. I'm kind of like, I'm kind of in
- 28:45a mix with both for y'all right. I actually thought the Beastie Boys selection
- 28:49worked perfectly for that scene. It was yo, there was turning up,
- 28:53things was good going down. I was cool with that. When they played
- 28:56Earth, Winn and Fire, yeah, I was like why, like what
- 29:00and I love love, I love the song reasons, it just did not
- 29:04fit for that scene. Now, when Rocket was playing his little song and
- 29:07he was kind of jamming and everything, I was like, Okay, that's
- 29:11cool. Listen. I don't have to be a fan of the music.
- 29:14As long as the tone and the you know, the pacing, if it
- 29:17fits and it conveys whatever the scene is trying to communicate, I can rock
- 29:21with that. Jam Creep Creep, the first one I'm just saying some of
- 29:27the songs just didn't fit with like what was actually happening on screen. And
- 29:32I was just like, it just felt like you hit random on your playlist.
- 29:36No, but I say of it, but all of the movies said
- 29:38that. That's what I'm saying. It was on brand on It was totally
- 29:42on brand for the galaxy. He's got all of the music comes from close
- 29:48to the Walkman when he was a kid. He's no concept of anything being
- 29:52connected to anything we know. This is James Gunns High School, like wet
- 29:57dream over all of these songs. So I've never I've never thought I thought
- 30:02the point was that they weren't supposed to fit. I thought that was the
- 30:06point because the first movie, the first volume, every song hit. It
- 30:12might have done better than this, but I've always thought that there's something like
- 30:17okay, And then the way they bring them in and out as always,
- 30:19that was actually bothering me more in this movie than the other movie. Definitely,
- 30:23how they how they yet like I'm oh, I'm now pressing play on
- 30:27something. I'm gonna Yeah. It felt like it was he was trying to
- 30:30force it. I know that feature like when they would take off their headphones
- 30:34and then the music would fade away or like it reminded me a Baby Driver.
- 30:38I love that. Okay, and let me make this very quick.
- 30:45I think the intro A Baby Driver is perfection. After that, I think
- 30:49it falls apart. Like I think he's never on beat. I think that
- 30:52dude can't fucking dance, and I think it's a movie where people like that's
- 30:56the thing. It's I don't think. I don't want to just say white
- 31:00people because it's not all them. But sometimes when it comes to the music
- 31:03and how it relates to film and movement, it's not right because I'm used
- 31:07to things that move on feet, you know. And the intro Baby Drivers
- 31:11on Feat. After that it starts clapping on the one in three don't be
- 31:18heae one, you know, like James Brown, you know, et cetera.
- 31:27Like it's how you know, and that's the thing, like you like,
- 31:30that's why, Like I even kind of the earth on the final it
- 31:34is kind of cool because it's like, you know, silly, and it
- 31:37was like they're floating and the time, you know, so that was kind
- 31:41of cute. But at the same time, overall, know, the music
- 31:45was one of my that was one of the problems for me. Um.
- 31:48I enjoyed the music. I thought it was dope. Um. I think
- 31:52it's like his mom is the one that gave him the cassette and all that
- 31:56stuff. So my assumptions moms just racist and she didn't a lot of black
- 32:00people's music. They were they were in Mississippi or something. Right, Yeah,
- 32:04it's fine. She's dead now, there's nothing for us to be mad
- 32:07about. So dead now, let's just move it. Let's just move on.
- 32:09Dog. I really liked that mom, and now I'm looking at her.
- 32:15Now, we don't. We don't need Tarantino involved with this because Stalar
- 32:19would have definitely called the high evolutionary in words, So we don't. I
- 32:23don't. I don't read that in the Marvel movie. I would have liked,
- 32:28Yeah, I would have liked if what if the high evolutionary called them
- 32:30a bunch of and you know, that would have been even better. Yeah,
- 32:34But then he would have made the high evolutionary white, because Tarantino wouldn't
- 32:37have had the black person said, Um, I have so many, so
- 32:42many we'll get there. Also, uh, visuals, because loting with the
- 32:49music is what made a lot of scenes from me because when it is like
- 32:53you could tell some of it was like I'll need a trippy song right now,
- 32:57or like you know, even the visual like when they go into an
- 33:00Orago color and they all have the different colors suits in addition to the funny
- 33:04gag that the joke we get about the colors, but it just looks fucking
- 33:07beautiful. Like It's why the Guardians trailers always are dope because you could take
- 33:12any It's like you could randomly pick any scene from this movie, close your
- 33:16eyes and throw it into a trailer out of context and you'd be like,
- 33:20I don't know what this movie is. I gotta see it, you know
- 33:22what I mean. So it was hitting like that. And then the last
- 33:24thing when you brought up Nevula, Um, I love that they've arked out
- 33:30those characters so much that Nebula and Gamora just talking grunts and were like they
- 33:35were emotional moments from me, like, yeah, it's been respecting each other,
- 33:37yeah they know. I love that Nebula kept in contact with God more
- 33:45time because name what she last remembered, she was trying to connect to Nebula,
- 33:50because when we met, she was still trying to connect to her so
- 33:53for her to come to a time where like Nebula is open and vulnerable and
- 33:59willing to connect. I could see her being very excited. And I really
- 34:02like the Nebula kept out of secret because that's none of Peter's business. Yeah,
- 34:06and I'm sure Peter was like I'm sure she was like, please don't
- 34:09tell that weird guy We're still here, and she was like yeah, fucking
- 34:14like like, I could definitely see Nebula being a part of that. And
- 34:16I thought, to your point, it was one. Even though there's only
- 34:21been three movies, We've seen all these characters so many times, and I
- 34:24thought that was done so well. How they like lightly sprinkled the Guardians anytime
- 34:29somebody's in space and Thor and I'm like, that's what I want to see.
- 34:34I'm not we don't need to see a full movie to get a check
- 34:37in. And I also think back to Thor's why I was like he was
- 34:40done with movies. Why are we still the story economy that James Gunn is
- 34:45working with. Its crazy because there are so many characters, Like I was
- 34:50thinking about why this movie is so rocket heavy and if you really think about
- 34:53it, because we really did everybody else, like everybody else is like we
- 34:58know that story now we know their maturity. Yeah, like a Rockets story
- 35:06was like emotional and good so like and and it's and it's clearly been in
- 35:09the worst because from like the first time we see him, it's like he
- 35:14don't want to talk about his background. It's clearly full of trauma. He's
- 35:16having, you know, flashbacks. Why is he so gruff? You know
- 35:20that hit way different now, way back and watch that volume one. I
- 35:24love, I love. I think that's the highest form of art. Is
- 35:29like you can take something, put it up here later and recontextualize everything that
- 35:34happened before and makes me want to go back and be like, oh he
- 35:37was dealing with that then, well of course. And even though I read
- 35:39the comics and news, you know they take liberties all the time. So
- 35:44like the way they hit it, I was like, yo, y'all,
- 35:45y'all did your thing and made these characters even more even more deep for me.
- 35:52It's like how Clone Wars does the prequels, where like before I was
- 35:57the biggest hater of the prequels ever, and now after Prone Wars and everything,
- 36:00I'm like that shit had a lot of good ideas. You know,
- 36:04they weren't executed, but it had an incredible amount of ideas. You know
- 36:08the fact that Lucas just like half all this new ship Niggas, you know,
- 36:13and Niggas was like, now we went that old ship and he was
- 36:15like, yo, you know by my old album. He just I think
- 36:20George Lucas issue is the places he chooses to tell a story are not the
- 36:24places that are interesting to me. But then all these other people that have
- 36:29had their hands on it, that are like us, that are nerdy in
- 36:31that way, They're like, why aren't we just telling this story of this?
- 36:36Why this should have been with do you know who's very interesting? These
- 36:39Mandalorians? Apparently they are about it. We should probably tell that story.
- 36:44So I kind of like that now, But you're right. When the prequels
- 36:46came out, it felt very much like another Senate meeting George who. But
- 36:52now whenever I see that sentence show up, I get hype, you know
- 36:53what I mean, I'm like, what's that happening in the sentence? That
- 36:57was the case the first time? Yeah, first time, I was like,
- 37:00why are we watching Intergalactic c Span? I don't care about this?
- 37:04But now we got the clone. Now we know what it means though,
- 37:07right, Yeah, decisions yea go down and when they made these decisions,
- 37:14dog like that should give me hype now so but no, like this is
- 37:17like you said, it recontextrolizes lots of stuff, Like he's talked about that,
- 37:22James jun has talked about that, how this has always been Rocket story,
- 37:24Like Layla's tells him that, you know in that scene when they're in
- 37:28the Afterlife, was like, this has always been your story, you know,
- 37:30It's always been about you. And then like even the little things,
- 37:35It's like, this is why I think what Marvel has been missing is like
- 37:40it's like you said, Frank, it's like just the little touches of interconnectedness,
- 37:45that's all you need, Like you don't need it to be whole things.
- 37:49When Peter tells him captain at the end, when he calls Rocket captain,
- 37:53I'm like, oh fuck, you know what I mean, that's been
- 37:55three movies. These fucking assholes argue it over this ship, you know,
- 38:00and how he just you know, Captain, you'll be a better leader than
- 38:04I ever was. Captain, you know, I'm losing it, Like that's
- 38:08all it takes, and that's why they've had such a run because they've been
- 38:13able to do this, and I think they'll get back to that. You
- 38:15know. That's the other thing. Right now, they're re establishing all these
- 38:17characters. He's like, we're seeing it like because I saw the trailer for
- 38:21The Marvels. When I saw it again and on the Bits trade, I
- 38:23was like, oh, oh, okay, you know this movie might be
- 38:27something right here, because you know, we are all in love with these
- 38:29separate characters, and now they're coming together, so they'll have those moments where
- 38:32they'll be able to talk about and reference pass things. Um, let's talk
- 38:37about the high evolutionary let's go all right, let's go. I've got a
- 38:43question, all right. I loved them right, but someone else brought this
- 38:46up to me after the first time I saw it, and then I saw
- 38:49it again. Actually, I've got two, but I'm gonna get into it.
- 38:52The second one deals with the optopus. But first let's talk about because
- 38:54you know he is a black man, and then there's a black man portraying
- 38:58this character, how do you feel about a raccoon tearing his face off?
- 39:01Oh my god, I hated that so much. I was like, really,
- 39:05like someone else brought it up to me. Wait, ye wrong with
- 39:08it? What's wrong? What's wrong with it? I personally didn't really even
- 39:12when they brought up to me. I don't you know, I mean,
- 39:15do you want the doctor Umar answer? Or I've never asked for the doctor
- 39:21Umar answer to any question? Thank you, thank you. I prefer looking
- 39:29for the doctor Umar. That's why I want to hear it. It's I'm
- 39:35scattered the hoteps and I don't I don't need it in my life. Let
- 39:37me get a short doctor. Yes. Well, first of all, if
- 39:40it was doctor Umar talking, he would say that James Gunn gonna deserve a
- 39:45whole bunch of lashes, and then Boody gonna need five thousand lashes for letting
- 39:50the coon beat on him like that and should have never happened because it tears
- 39:54the black community. I don't, okay. I figured that's what it was.
- 39:58It would have been something stupid like what's the significance of the raccoon?
- 40:02Specifically, like do we have it because it's a coon's We were called coons,
- 40:07Yeah, Frankie, tell me, you don't tell me. I know
- 40:08we're called coons. But coon defeated the intellectual black Man holding the stretch.
- 40:22Now, my I understand my because my problem with the comic isn't in the
- 40:27universe yet. But that's you know, they cast him already, and yeah,
- 40:32they cast him twice where somewhere. Jim from the office is like,
- 40:37that's a lot of stretch. That's why my head exploded. It cannot be
- 40:42Adam Driver. I don't today. We'll get that to look at at the
- 40:49comic book. Thing is he never puts on the crystal red stroll masks,
- 40:52and that, you know, I was missing that. But okay, I
- 40:57have one other thing about him though. Yeah, no, no, here's
- 40:59my other thing. Other question question while was his statue of Liberty holding a
- 41:04monkey. Oh god, oh I didn't think about that one. Well,
- 41:07I know what, No, I know because I think the concept was supposed
- 41:12to be evolution because humans, humans are so close to stir. Yeah,
- 41:19yeah, I see it. I see that. Mine. Mine was a
- 41:22little different. Mine was if he's a high evolutionary and he is building like
- 41:27another Earth like the first version. Now, the first version was obviously the
- 41:32animal human hybrids. I got that. Then he then he flattens that.
- 41:37Besides, he's going to do another planet and he needs rockets grain juice to
- 41:42make them all intelligent. But all the children that he has created are blonde
- 41:46children. Why why they were like Asian? Those kids were saying they were
- 41:53Yes, they're all that, but he created them so they're But they were
- 42:00all blunt? Why why? Like, why are you creating characters that look
- 42:05like what your ex girlfriend? Why? There you go? There you go,
- 42:08there you go? You called it? Look what do men do everything
- 42:13over women? This section of the podcast is out of control. I just
- 42:21know it was bothering me that they were all blund because my thing is,
- 42:23if you're a guy things in your own image, they should all be black
- 42:28children. I thought they have enough vitamin D. I mean, they clearly
- 42:35were in the cages. And on top of that, he's not that smart.
- 42:38I think that's kind of like the current thing that's been happening is the
- 42:42fact that as smart as other people make him out to be, he keeps
- 42:45screwing up. I mean, the second you get the counter Earth, you
- 42:49see them slinging that dope right then. I had an issue with the dope
- 42:55and the way that they were whatever dope things. But I I, no,
- 43:00no, no, wait, what's the issue with the He was tight
- 43:04about that. Um. He was like, all they're doing is replicating.
- 43:07Yeah, yeah, right right right. He was like, all they're doing
- 43:13is replicating. But I was like, okay, but they created math.
- 43:16I had I have so many questions about that's not replicating, that's that's synthesizing,
- 43:22that's inventing. They are different than humans. Where they learn how to
- 43:27make their version of math? Where did they learn to whole everything? So
- 43:30he had to introduce them to meth everything, because he introduced them to capitalism,
- 43:35He introduced them the problems, like they had cars, you know,
- 43:37there was a Detroit there. Obviously they had all this stuff going on.
- 43:40He had to introduce them to serious portrait studio. I mean everything we like,
- 43:45at some point, meth just trumps up, you know what I mean.
- 43:49That's one of those things like you know some too. I couldn't see
- 43:52him introducing them to math or it was a society developing and they discovered math,
- 43:58which was his not interpreting what they said, which when I saw the
- 44:02second time, I think he still realized it because oh boy was like,
- 44:07oh but they make it math and he said, Dann for real, no
- 44:10said correct, Which is why I'm going to flatten who's saying correct, as
- 44:16in like I don't know where he's where they found out how to make math.
- 44:21But that's why I'm getting rid of them, because this is not the
- 44:22direction I wanted their inventions to go. I wanted them to go in the
- 44:29like medical invention, Like here's why, here's why I found a high,
- 44:34revolutionary, refreshing and a great village. He's not like the villains that took
- 44:37it one step too far. He's just evil. And it's been a while
- 44:42since we had one. Is like, actually, I don't identify with none
- 44:45of this ship you Eugenesis. Like before, it's always like kind of got
- 44:49a good point. I ask Nigga, like, you know, homelessness is
- 44:52fucked up? What do we kill everybody that got houses? And he'd be
- 44:53like, oh yeah, hadn't me. This one was just straight up evil.
- 44:58So I appreciated that. But was he that evil? Yeah, that's
- 45:01still the planet full of living being because he didn't like me going he made
- 45:07it. But well, you if you have a kid, you can't kill
- 45:12it, then that's not how this works. So still a living life and
- 45:15a human being, you can't just can't just be like that moms. I
- 45:21know, our moms did it pel us all the time. It is not
- 45:25actual. Other other worlds, other civilizations viewed him as God. And look,
- 45:35just being a religious studies major, I found that stuff fascinating. And
- 45:38you know, he was having that back and forth with his subordinate and she
- 45:42was just saying, oh my god. I was like, first of all,
- 45:44y'all believe in God. That's crazy to me. When he was like,
- 45:46there is no God, and that's why I stepped in, and I
- 45:49was like, I was waiting for him to say that too, because she
- 45:52said it one time before, and I said, that is interesting. He
- 45:55didn't check her on that, right, And I thought, I said,
- 45:59damn, James Gunna finally fucked up three fans. I can't believe his brother
- 46:02let this line be in the script. And then when he hit it that
- 46:05second time and said I stepped in. I said, bravo, bro,
- 46:07you thought of everything. Let's go. This dude is evil. But it
- 46:14brings in that question though like, yes, he didn't like reproduce them like
- 46:17parents do. He literally created it still, but kind of you know,
- 46:24God relationship. Let's say y'all were smart enough that y'all genetically created a puppy.
- 46:31If you fucking drown that puppy, you're still evil, dude. I
- 46:35don't there's no earth where I'm gonna be like, well, he didn't make
- 46:37it like I watch you drown a puppy. Things if I give you life,
- 46:42but I do not have the right to take it away? No,
- 46:44why not? They're sentient, They're not like he just made like what did
- 46:50he mean? Bill burd says he believes in the right abortion, and he
- 46:53also believes you can, you know, should be able to kill a kid.
- 46:58And he's making it. Bill, he does not believe that was his
- 47:00black Listen, Bill, Okay, what is happening? Yeah, I was
- 47:06gonna say this conversation. So I don't think Manuel has ever watched Full Metal
- 47:10Alchemists either, because not Okay, okay, granted they not creating though they
- 47:15not created like that, but I know what you're talking about, Listen.
- 47:19I was talking about from like a an ethical perspectives are different than morality.
- 47:24No, no, no, that was ethical. That doctor that took his
- 47:28daughter and merged, killed the wife and merged the jarter with the dog,
- 47:31Now he was jacked up. Everyone in Full Metal Jack guys everything was jacked
- 47:37up to up unless unless somehow y'all engine this movie. Like, I don't
- 47:42see what that brother did wrong with y'all are psychopaths. He was wrong.
- 47:46I was against him. When the man made a ninja turtle and killed him,
- 47:50I was like, man, Leonardo, he was burning them too.
- 47:54It wasn't even ethical death. He was burning people to death. I mean
- 48:00it was quick. Rocket was his greatest asset, and he was willing to
- 48:06kill him because he was ugly. Yes, yeah, that when that's not
- 48:09a good dude. He said, Yo, this is solving problems for me.
- 48:14He is exactly what I mean. But god damn, he is amazing
- 48:19and amazing acting performance, like the way that he performed that. I want
- 48:22to see the raw footage of him because you know he holding a tennis ballers.
- 48:25Yeah it's not a real there's no real thing there. But when he
- 48:29puts his hands on Rocket's head, yes, and he's like, man,
- 48:34I'm man. I was scared. He was given this brother was acting Okay.
- 48:37I really was appreciated. That was so triggered when he saw Quill drunk.
- 48:44Yeah, I got the second time this is he lit. He came
- 48:49in there, lit boy, off the sauce. They was like, bro,
- 48:52it's time for you to go to bed, and he was lit off
- 48:53the sauce and he was like, yo, how do you figure that out?
- 48:58Because why are you smarter than me? Um? And it's interesting.
- 49:01I was there with the second time I saw. I was there with my
- 49:04brother and when Rocket figured out the answered my brother is sick o. He
- 49:08was like what something I made figured out something? He said it like outwardly,
- 49:14and I was like, that is pure not my brother, but like
- 49:17the high evolutionary is full ego. He's girl, he is god. He
- 49:27was thrown around these people. He was like, I made you. You're
- 49:30perfect, you look good. He started feeling up old girl, and I
- 49:34felt for her, talking about she got a blemed is sir, your face
- 49:36isn't on you're talking about stop so talking about I don't look good, sir.
- 49:45Although the fit was hidden, I don't want to I don't want you
- 49:51to talk to me about it. And I mean, hands down, he's
- 49:53one of the worst dudes that I've seen and one of the only people that,
- 49:58like you said, Rod is a full out villain cartoon. Yeah,
- 50:01but yeah, anybody that walked out this film feeling his point of view got
- 50:07something wrong, No, but took it so well. Like That's why I
- 50:09loved about him, because even though his like his actions are cartooning, you
- 50:14know, blowing up planets and ship, it's not a cartoon Like. I
- 50:17feared this dude throughout the movie, you know, and then when he was
- 50:21like calm and then he would go to rage, it was you, my
- 50:25man. I mean, I loved him into his hot squad. But he's
- 50:29a different motherfucker in this. And that's what's another thing where I'm like,
- 50:31oh, this motherfucker here isn't at toll. Yes, I think he brought
- 50:37his Broadway skills straight up whatever I mean, Oh no, he needs this
- 50:45this servatory right there. And the characters. The characters also made him feel
- 50:52dangerous. Right when god Moore found out was the high evolutionary was going out
- 50:57there, she said, oh she was spitting. She was like this right,
- 51:05who dead? I wish I wish they carried that same energy to the
- 51:10end. Now they kind of did, right, like when his whole crew
- 51:14was like, nah, you ain't gonna make it, something like when they
- 51:15really had the gall I mean, these are the people that like right there
- 51:20with him. They still them growing people up, and the fact that they
- 51:22had the guts, the audacity, the gall to pull up their guns on
- 51:27it. I was like, oh, I guess he ain't that scary.
- 51:32That was the point. He was so scary, but they said me can't
- 51:37stand out. God, let's say. I know y'all hated the music,
- 51:39but the original score that they was playing at that time was of a revolution,
- 51:45right. They was like no, no more and it was like trumpets,
- 51:50it was swelling. It was like this is a new day. And
- 51:52he was like what fuck y'all, I'm gonna up that. He hit that
- 51:57stomp and said enough and everything was a race on that. Like I don't
- 52:01even know what people I felt bad. Oh girl, that was just the
- 52:06computer because she didn't get a choice. She was like, damn, I
- 52:08didn't even have a good ye the ship, like what, I didn't enjoy
- 52:15it, right, I know, that's so freaking That's the part. That's
- 52:20what I wish the music had more of, Like I do like what you
- 52:22were saying, like how would he take off the headphones? And like even
- 52:25that shot of Startler and he's standing there and they're playing the song and it's
- 52:29like out in space, you know, and it's like that ship was cool,
- 52:31you know, but no, I wish the score was dope, like
- 52:36you said, because it was like, oh shit, it's a revolution now,
- 52:38niggas, you know. Like I think another reason I forgot to mention
- 52:44that the music worked for me, and this is it could have been any
- 52:46song, by the way, But the reason, part of the reason the
- 52:49music work is it's a two and a half hour movie that doesn't feel long.
- 52:52And I think it's because every five minutes I was listening to a new
- 52:55song, like so it's like, you know, it's like I don't then
- 52:59it's starting to drag. Oh no, hold up, I remember this,
- 53:00you know, like, and I think that kind of works in the film's
- 53:04favor because you know, two hundred hours, it could and you know,
- 53:07it's marvel so you gotta stay through the credits. It could start to feel
- 53:09long. And it didn't for me. It felt the first time. It
- 53:14did the second time not as much. Yeah it didn't. Well, I
- 53:19mean, I haven't seen it twice. I know. Even then, even
- 53:21on the second time I felt it, it wasn't bad, like oh my
- 53:23god, you know, I gotta get out of here. But I was
- 53:25like, okay, we but you know what triggered it for me was like
- 53:29it was the constant repeating uh sequence between Gomorrah and Quill because I mean like
- 53:35we kind of had this set up in um, you know, Infinity War
- 53:38and End Game, and then we had a little bit more in the Holiday
- 53:42special, and then we had just a little bit and four and then we
- 53:45had a little bit more now in this movie, and I was like,
- 53:47yo, like like when she you know, finally like punched them and was
- 53:51about to take him out, I was like, Okay, give me more
- 53:54of this, like progressed this to another level. I'm here for the jokes
- 53:59though, the whole thing with the radio and all that that was funny.
- 54:01But I was just like, heyy man, like we're doing this again,
- 54:04Bro, don't you get it yet? Like now, I know, but
- 54:09I think like we gotten that point along. So you're saying you were you
- 54:14were a little confused as to a man not taking no for an answer for
- 54:17a long period time. I get it. I get it. I'm just
- 54:21asking especially one Like honestly, I thought it was just enough time because I'm
- 54:27like, this was to him the love of his lie, cosmic love of
- 54:32it and he lost everything else. That's funny, Like that's why I always
- 54:37fuck Will Quill because people, you know, like they didn't understand why he
- 54:39bubbed out, you know, in um Infinity War, and I loved it
- 54:43because he, like I think Gunn disagreed. I didn't read the article.
- 54:45He didn't really like how he was treated. But I love that because it
- 54:50was like when you carried his character from the first two Guardians into Infinity War
- 54:53and then he was like, you know, he chooses to kill Gamore or
- 54:58even you know, and Dane was like, nah, bro nice tride and
- 55:02then you know, walks away with her and then comes back like, oh
- 55:07yeah, I just killed her dog. You know. So of all the
- 55:09characters, like I love James Gunn, but if you gave everybody a list
- 55:13of characters that would fuck up the time they almost got they knows, everybody
- 55:17would have star Lord at least number five, and I think most of us
- 55:22would have had him number one. So like, I feel James, but
- 55:25uh nah, James, that that was right in the moment right now.
- 55:30But that's another thing I really liked about star star Lord, particularly in this
- 55:35project, is that he was both uh fuck up and very competent, and
- 55:42I could see why he was the leader, and like, there was so
- 55:45many times that he was being funny, he was being the goof. I
- 55:47got why they were saying it, but then he reminded me, like I'm
- 55:52that guy. Even him saying like it's a standoff. I was like,
- 55:54yo, that that that's what that is off. Sorry, it's a face
- 55:59off. But if it's fact, he's right, he's right or even and
- 56:01he's and like at this point, we watched him go through so much stuff
- 56:06in the Marvel universe and come out alive. He's competent as any other,
- 56:09like Avenger Level's character, right, so it made sense and then I love
- 56:15it. Even after all this time, the writing still leans into the humor
- 56:17of him, Like when he convinced that sister to like giving us, He's
- 56:22like, I'm gonna talk to their hearts and all that and this Susi's like,
- 56:24that's no, of course not, that's stude, but I'm gonna lock
- 56:27up their I was like, yes, I'm not doing that shit. But
- 56:32he got through the shorty too because she's like talked to her heart, you
- 56:36know, and he's like, I talked she was feeling me anyway was not
- 56:40definitely the Moore was doubting him. He said, Sauce, Yo, I'm
- 56:45him. Yeah, yeah, I've been bagging alien shorties throughout this whole series.
- 56:51Dog when he couldn't figure out the car, to me, I was
- 56:55like, that's just showing how hard stick shift is. That's how I like,
- 56:59that's starting to believe whole spaceship not to figure it out right. She
- 57:07was like this, this is hard to move. So I was like,
- 57:08actually having in my notes, I've said, Yo, that's all hard ships.
- 57:14I can fly ship with arms, but he can't drive stick who what
- 57:20I what I loved about his character was kind of like what we talked about
- 57:22before, was that it did kind of give him a huge stepping growth,
- 57:28which is something that's plagued him his whole adult life. I mean, this
- 57:31man lost his mama, he lost his other other daddy, you know,
- 57:36with yand so he's gay. So when he had Gomorra, that was the
- 57:39first time he had like a real meaningful relationship, a real connection. So
- 57:45when she was gone, of course he was gonna pop off and snap on
- 57:47Thanos and stuff. And because he ain't know, he don't know how to
- 57:51be by himself and keep and I saw you have to keep in mind like
- 57:54the relationships that he has art like his mom dying very tragic, right,
- 58:00but the Yonda relationship was basically a kidnapping turned into yeah yeah, very Stockholm.
- 58:07And then his other daddy got you know, more kids than Nick Cannon.
- 58:13Like this, this man ain't really had healthy relationships to learn from his
- 58:16whole life, and the arc being him learning to accept her autonomy and just
- 58:22let it go, and that his Gomore was gone and this new Gomore you
- 58:25know, it was cool, like it made sense, but most importantly it
- 58:30didn't take up the whole filming that it like rocket story being the main story
- 58:34made way more sense than us having to go through that with him. As
- 58:37as the eight story, I loved it as a b orc story. Fine,
- 58:39yeah, I agree. I about crying when I saw she was happy
- 58:43with the Ravagers. Man, I was like your life boom yeah her,
- 58:51you know, like they love her where she got her new family, you
- 58:53know, like she good, Like they were like I mean overjoyed that she
- 58:58came back, you know, like this isn't what you're talking about, like
- 59:01this the you know, and then and then it worked. It makes sense
- 59:06she'll never be the Gomore. We know, Um, I had to bring
- 59:08this back to but old girl Harley Quinn talks about this, right, She's
- 59:13like, for you to be like me, you have to do this,
- 59:15this, this, this, this, this in order and nothing can be
- 59:21different for you to be me. And I thought that same way for Gomore.
- 59:24The only reason why Quill got them buns was because of dumb being hitter
- 59:30the stone, dumb going this dumb breaking out of the prison. Like,
- 59:35so without those things, he's goofy. I wouldn't hit either. He probably
- 59:39stink sweaty. Yeah, and the time was getting green booty cheeks before hers
- 59:45stop that A couple other but this movie and this movie, he was not
- 59:53Quill of Movie one. He was down bad. So he was gonna call
- 1:00:00Thomas moment so everybody have a moment. She didn't want Carl Thomas. He
- 1:00:07was singing and talking about one weird. Yeah, the first movie is the
- 1:00:14one that was even able to break the Moore's defenses. Right, that Virgin
- 1:00:20of Gore, that version of Quill does not exist anymore. He Carl Thomas.
- 1:00:28We already know. We were talking about logic. Logically, you gotta
- 1:00:31be quill number one. I mean topless sweating in a tube for me,
- 1:00:37for me to even consider, okay, and if that's not here, then
- 1:00:42bro let me go with I'm chilling with Sevesto Saloon. Yeah, and earlier,
- 1:00:50um caraenl, what were you saying about Adam Warlock and stuff? Because
- 1:00:52I did want to hear about that. I just think, Okay, so
- 1:00:57I try herd not to I try hard when I watched these movies not to
- 1:01:00go, oh, this isn't like the comic, because that's not fair.
- 1:01:04It's a separate you know, somebody's taken their creative vision and this is inspired
- 1:01:08by but I and I understand the point of him in this story. But
- 1:01:17when you have someone as powerful as Adam Warlock and then you're sort of and
- 1:01:24I'm not saying that you couldn't see that he was powerful, but I just
- 1:01:28kind of feel like they neutered him a bit and he would because I'm yeah,
- 1:01:32like, I just I got that he didn't understand what was going on
- 1:01:37all the time because he was young. But once he figured it out,
- 1:01:40I wanted him to figure it out sooner, and I wanted some of that
- 1:01:45power to be in that final firefight, like, I wanted him to be
- 1:01:47one of the people that was also fighting high evolutionary. I just felt he
- 1:01:53was weakened to a point. And I get where we were going. We
- 1:01:58were setting him up for doing what he did do in the comics, which
- 1:02:01was become one of the Guardians. But I just I wanted a little bit
- 1:02:06more from him, especially is so good too? Yeah, well you know
- 1:02:10what else it is too. It's like in every video game when you beat
- 1:02:15up that one boss character that takes forever to be because they're super hard,
- 1:02:19and then they get on your team and they nerved, and you like,
- 1:02:22bro, what happened to the powers? That's what I'm thinking. I was
- 1:02:24nerved, That's what I was thinking. If he was nerved, I couldn't
- 1:02:28think of the term. That's what I felt. And I just that was
- 1:02:30the only thing, only other character in there that I was like, because
- 1:02:36in the first scene, he honestly got that first scene, I was like,
- 1:02:40I don't know how they're gonna make a movie out of this. He's
- 1:02:44too strong and it's only five minutes and they can't do um. So,
- 1:02:49yeah, they definitely, And I think James Gunn does this a lot.
- 1:02:51He nerves powerful characters by making them kind of dumb, like that's his shortcut,
- 1:02:55is like, we'll just make them stupid, Okay, because we can't
- 1:02:58have him have all the full deck. If he had a full deck,
- 1:03:01you can't beat him. But um, I enjoyed the portrayal of him.
- 1:03:06I george the character. But I think that was probably the big sacrifice that
- 1:03:09had to be made when you have that many characters in the film and purpose
- 1:03:15his purpose is really just to show how strong the high evolutionary. Yes,
- 1:03:17and clearly and clearly like and and you know, he does get an arc
- 1:03:22of redemption and loss. He loses his mother kind of like you know,
- 1:03:27yeah, yeah, he has to lose his mom. Okay, um,
- 1:03:30contractually, I know you don't think you just rolling around with two parents,
- 1:03:37Come on now, healthy, healthy household. I don't think, boy,
- 1:03:43who you think is ok? But yeah, it was, it made it
- 1:03:49made a certain level of like I feel I feel like it was a sacrifice
- 1:03:52the time. Like for sure, they were like, we want to give
- 1:03:54him a story, but it ain't gonna be the time that it needs,
- 1:03:58so they simplified the hell out of it. I do appreciate that. In
- 1:04:01the end, you see that he's a garden. So there's like a future
- 1:04:04of we can get more of this. They can actually flesh him out and
- 1:04:08give us somewhere to go. Although the trauma of Losers Mom is gonna hang
- 1:04:12over that character forever. I'm sure, No, I don't hold you.
- 1:04:14I didn't really remember when Thor lost his eye and you couldn't tell that he
- 1:04:19lost his eye ever. Yeah, that covered real quick, got a big
- 1:04:26old contact. She actually my man came back quick. He was like,
- 1:04:33okay, mom dead you know. Yeah. I was like, did she
- 1:04:36blow up? Like it was this so they I felt like they just rushed
- 1:04:41over it. And I was saying Thor's eye like when um Hella knocked his
- 1:04:45eye out because they couldn't show it. Yeah, it was like I thought
- 1:04:47she punched him and then he had a open hole. I said, I
- 1:04:54watched I the way for it to dripore. That's actually what made in the
- 1:04:59film. I don't know if they man for it, but that made her
- 1:05:00soul scary to me. Yeah, that's yeah. I wasn't even like she
- 1:05:09didn't even gloat like I got your eye. She was like, that's why
- 1:05:12happen? When to cleanly punch somebody. I was like, Mike Tyson could
- 1:05:19never that's crazy and now and it was a god. She punched a god's
- 1:05:25eye out and didn't even take a second to be like, oh, look
- 1:05:28at the fit'st to nothing. No, she do that on a regular But
- 1:05:32I'm I was so turned off by the fact that he had to become like
- 1:05:39so neutered in that sense, and just I'm just tired. Here's the thing.
- 1:05:44I understand because some people were like, man, if you're a comic
- 1:05:45fan, you're not gonna like this. And I get that. I gave
- 1:05:48up on the MCU being comic accurate, like over a decade ago, like
- 1:05:53that dream is over. The ship has sailed a long time. But this
- 1:05:57interpretation, I'm tired of the big and it's kind of the same thing that
- 1:06:01he did with Dragson Volume two. I was like, Bro, you didn't
- 1:06:04have to do this. You can if you want to do bring the comedy.
- 1:06:09You can keep him like the straight man character and just bring the comedy
- 1:06:13around him. I thought they could have just doubled down on that again.
- 1:06:15Adam Warlock could have came in. Maybe he's premature and he's just not cultural.
- 1:06:19He's not worldly, he doesn't understand references. You could have just played
- 1:06:23that card again rather than making him seeing dumber or more childish. And for
- 1:06:28some comic fans out there, that is actually part of the comics too,
- 1:06:30you know, by the way, like the old old him. Yeah,
- 1:06:35when it was like you know, when he was interacting with Thor and stuff
- 1:06:39like that. But even if you came in during the Infinity Saga or whatever,
- 1:06:43you knew that Adam Warlock, when he even shows up at all,
- 1:06:46it's because there's some huge significance. And I was a little turned off at
- 1:06:51the fact that now you bring him in after teasing him in volume two,
- 1:06:56You've missed him in all of the Infinity war and I'm sitting You're thinking,
- 1:07:00like why is he here again? Like what exactly is his purpose? How
- 1:07:03does he serve this? And it was kind of like, to be honest,
- 1:07:06I don't even think they needed him. I mean, if you're gonna
- 1:07:10have him as a guardian, fine, maybe leave that for somebody else.
- 1:07:14After Gun, they could have sent some of their wild pigs to go get
- 1:07:16Rocket, you know, like they didn't need Adam Warlock. But I was
- 1:07:20just turned off by hurt by his nerfing. But I but it's just like
- 1:07:28you said, they didn't need him either, so I don't. I didn't
- 1:07:31leave the movie like finally the definitive Adam Warlock. But at the same time,
- 1:07:35I didn't. It didn't ruin anything for me. It's just more like,
- 1:07:39okay, so they just didn't have time to do whatever. And of
- 1:07:43course they left him alive and in a teaser that means they someone can develop
- 1:07:47this character. Just want't be James Gunn because he's going to DC. I
- 1:07:51just pictured him being like, They're like, yeah, you gotta put out
- 1:07:55of it this movie. He was like, fuck, let's pay uh give
- 1:08:00us some of drag lines. Well, you know, but I also think
- 1:08:04that um Manuel said this earlier, like you know, you didn't have to
- 1:08:09neuter him sort of that when I think of a character that was created that's
- 1:08:14sort of like that's similar, that was kind of birth too soon or created
- 1:08:18too soon. Um this is an anime reference. I'm thinking of my hero
- 1:08:21Academia and a bad guy like um Tomora Tomorrow is the one that has the
- 1:08:27hands all over his face. Those the hands of his family that he killed.
- 1:08:33Kiel said, but he was but he's even though he has some his
- 1:08:38weaknesses that he's not done so that that's why he can't fall power up.
- 1:08:41But his his mental is still very singular, right, So it would have
- 1:08:46been more terrifying if yes, we have to me. I just think it'd
- 1:08:51been more terrifying if yes, we have the high evolutionary we know is the
- 1:08:55big batty in this film. But also secondarily we have this that has it
- 1:09:00in for Rocket, not because he's scared of the high Evolutionary, but it's
- 1:09:03because I will sort of like I will not be defeated. I will go
- 1:09:08after the thing that or if he came after U Nebula or something, you
- 1:09:13know what I mean, Like if it was something where we have this extra
- 1:09:15threat that we're dealing with and then his arc blends with their's, like okay,
- 1:09:23well the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I just felt like,
- 1:09:26yeah, that would have been more interesting than I agree. I mean,
- 1:09:29it could have all worked like that. It's definitely a portrayal choice that
- 1:09:31they made, and like, like I said, it didn't bother me.
- 1:09:34But also, if I'm being frank, we're down to like like if there's
- 1:09:39an A through Z character hierarchy, we're probably around like Q right now if
- 1:09:43he's like, we're starting to bring people in and like can't even carry their
- 1:09:45own comic book. No more like it's like Adam Warlock man was all right,
- 1:09:50it was not what it could have been, but I like, I
- 1:09:55can't lie like I cared that much. Yeah, my thing is like the
- 1:09:59power level, Well it wasn't my thing. It's my thing is like I'm
- 1:10:01Adam Warlock from the you know, early Infinity guardlet and he's always been like
- 1:10:06the space hippie dude to me, and I really thought that was missing,
- 1:10:11even like the version in the Guardians of the Galaxy video game from two years
- 1:10:15ago, I thought was a better version of this. But like you said,
- 1:10:17Rod, at the same time, it's like, you know whatever.
- 1:10:19You know, I've seen the version of the video game. I've got the
- 1:10:23comics. You know, there's different versions, because the one of the video
- 1:10:26game was space hippie but not like the comics. So I liked that winning.
- 1:10:30I liked this one. What it was they put like Jack of Hearts
- 1:10:32in she hope I'm not gonna be mad. I wouldn't be mad. I'll
- 1:10:39just be liked. He come on, get out of here. I know
- 1:10:44I am though, turn around on that turn around that figuringe thing behind you,
- 1:10:46and show me your jack arts. They didn't make one, dog,
- 1:10:51thank you. I'll be the first to buy it, bro if they didn't
- 1:10:57make one. I think that proves my case, which is that they like,
- 1:11:00at this point, we're just pulling the people that like that, that
- 1:11:04couldn't do it by themselves, that don't get the video game. So like,
- 1:11:08you know what, these people gonna fall through the cracks and ways that
- 1:11:11I'm sure that we'll all be a little bit like mythed by um. And
- 1:11:15I think that's a sad reality of having a thousand characters. You know,
- 1:11:19some of these motheruckers ain't fitting to get what they deserve. But I do
- 1:11:25want to see this character again, and they did, like they did leave
- 1:11:28me feeling like there's a place to take Adam Warlock that could be interesting.
- 1:11:30It just didn't happen here for me. I did not see that, not
- 1:11:34here. Not here. I'm saying I'm hopeful that somebody will, But the
- 1:11:39way this movie ended, I was just like, well, he just part
- 1:11:41of the team now, Like I don't see anything meaningful coming from him that
- 1:11:45happen. Have your ass crying that Christmas specials or some shit they missing his
- 1:11:53mama. I question actually about that last scene. The girl that was she's
- 1:12:00from the comics too, but what was her name? I cannot remember her
- 1:12:03Alia or something like that. She's a character in the comics who joins the
- 1:12:06Guardians and has like, you know something. Yeah, she has some type
- 1:12:13of you know powers, Like they showed her glowing hands like you know,
- 1:12:16and they show she's got uh something with one of the eyes too. Yeah,
- 1:12:20she has like she's from what I understand. I haven't read those comics,
- 1:12:24but she does show up in the Guardians Trauma book. So okay,
- 1:12:27I vaguely remembered another woman that was not Gomorrow, but I just could not
- 1:12:30remember her name. And that's not supposed to be the same little girl who's
- 1:12:32in the Guardians game, is it. I don't think so. I don't
- 1:12:35think so. There's an alien girl in that too. There's another alien girl
- 1:12:41who allegendly star Lord's daughter in that Oh Lord. Yeah, oh yeah,
- 1:12:47that's a great game if you haven't played it. The Guardians of the Galaxy
- 1:12:50game is in Oh my god, it's incredible beginning to end. It's it's
- 1:12:55such an emotional story. It's a great solo game for people who love solo
- 1:12:59game and it's you know, it was I was so surprised by that game
- 1:13:01to this the first person shooter or no, it's like third person and you
- 1:13:05control star Lord and then you manage the team and it's ill like the choices
- 1:13:11make you make the team like you more like you either bring the Guardians together
- 1:13:15or you force them apart. You know, I will say, not a
- 1:13:17lot of hip hop music in it. No, no, I don't remember.
- 1:13:20That's on brands. Yeah, it for me. But but Adam Warlot
- 1:13:28though, speaking bars that ce, so there was some hip hop there,
- 1:13:30you know, because I got my bars from Adam Warlot, so you know,
- 1:13:33because my man speaks in rhyme. I think James Gunn should take Etra
- 1:13:38Don in the DC universe and let Black Thought write the bars. I feel
- 1:13:45that be insane, feel like the world needs is one of my favorites too,
- 1:13:49for his bars and as far as always be so simple in the in
- 1:13:53the TV shows, I want you want him to really start and I want
- 1:13:58him to be talking up to be like, yeah this nigga, don't come
- 1:14:01with that high English. Ask him some more questions if black Thought is doing
- 1:14:08the voice too like that. But back to Jack of Heart's real quick the
- 1:14:15reason why he never became popular, They said, all the artists hated drawing
- 1:14:17his complex as costume, so they they were volted in unison against the creator
- 1:14:24and would never draw jacky and I love this costume. That hell. That
- 1:14:30costume is flames. Flames, thank you, Okay, thank you, Rod.
- 1:14:33At least we can agree on that valid is hell because that way in
- 1:14:44the mouth you tell me we had that reminds me we had a joke on
- 1:14:47Game Theory this season that we got tired them trying to make us change the
- 1:14:53joke. They'd be like, can't you change it? Can't you change?
- 1:14:54Well, it's just not we want something some type of we the last day
- 1:14:59of the day show yea, and they sent us to like they send it
- 1:15:02one more time, Like I know, we asked you every day this week.
- 1:15:04Can y'all come up with some more examples for this thing? And we
- 1:15:08just all said no, Like, but what was the joke? It was
- 1:15:13about w ncuble a women's NC double A players getting eggs in a bag um
- 1:15:19for their meal. When the men remember that, remember that episode and we
- 1:15:24had fake We had done every egg in a bag joke you can think of.
- 1:15:29There was nothing left and they sent it the last day and everybody was
- 1:15:32like we were making jokes that they wanted us to write jokes like, you
- 1:15:36know, like we was writing jokes like uh man, that egg in the
- 1:15:41bag is like asking writers to keep writing about eggs in the bag for a
- 1:15:44week even though we already did this ship. Like, I feel like that's
- 1:15:48what happened with those artists in Jack and Hard. They're like, MANU,
- 1:15:51that dude, No, it ain't no way, ain't no way you can
- 1:15:56Spider Man's webs is hard, bro, No, ain't no way, And
- 1:16:00niggas start throwing the webs on Spider Man half the tom Boy. They do
- 1:16:03not care, niggas. It's just a string, yeah, I mean on
- 1:16:06his costume. He just be white Jack and Jacko. Hart's the same way
- 1:16:15every time. But his mouth is moving. All right. I think we're
- 1:16:21done with our guardians review. We like, you know, basketball with it
- 1:16:24turns into a blowout and they just started talking about some other ship. I'm
- 1:16:27sorry for that guy. And that's all good, unless anybody has any last
- 1:16:31thoughts. I didn't say, um, I think they tried. I felt
- 1:16:34like it was a fetch, you know with that little dog thing, you
- 1:16:38know, like they was really trying to make that happen, and I don't
- 1:16:41know, it did not happen for me, Like when I was on the
- 1:16:44ground, No cosmos amazing, the best dog in the world, Like,
- 1:16:48you know, good dog, good job, he's the best dog. Come
- 1:16:51on man that like that that scene with her and what's his name with Cracking,
- 1:16:58Like what what do you say? Uh? Nebula and cracked him?
- 1:17:01What was it? Uh? Crab Nebula. He's cracked. He had something.
- 1:17:08Now he's when when they come together again, he's like crab Nebula or
- 1:17:11something. I can't remember what he calls it. Yeah, he put their
- 1:17:15names together. He's like at them again. I love that ship because him
- 1:17:17and Cracked and the Nebula had the relationship from the second one when he comes
- 1:17:21up on her and it's like, what are you gonna do when you get
- 1:17:24you know, nice hat? You know. He's also such a good character,
- 1:17:29such a good character man, better than any right than he has any
- 1:17:32right to be. Yes, how small his screen time is, Yes,
- 1:17:35the best In part two when like he betrays what's his name, and then
- 1:17:39he's mad at all the dudes get killed. Like he he's a character man.
- 1:17:44You know, Dunn's brother does it in that role and Cosmos the best
- 1:17:47of his name. Shine. Yeah, I gotta give him the nepotism sometimes
- 1:17:54to be hidden, you know, also worked out, you know, worked
- 1:17:58out for her. That's his wife who get shop. For those who didn't
- 1:18:00know, but like, oh, y'all know, I put your wife in
- 1:18:02your brother in your movie. Yes, oh no, no, I didn't
- 1:18:05say nothing was wrong with you. Never shut. People are like I can't
- 1:18:12believe he keeps on putting them all of in his movie. The same thing.
- 1:18:17Fact, I was like, actually I'll be tight if my sister do
- 1:18:23movie. I'm not insane. Also, like black people, nepotism hit different
- 1:18:29anyway, yes, like like if you black, and it's some neverutisms because
- 1:18:32you can do the job. It's not like like sometimes white people get a
- 1:18:35little too friendly and be like, I don't know if you can act,
- 1:18:39you want to be in a movie. But you think about how many think
- 1:18:44how many scars gards have we seen, like one generations already from the dad
- 1:18:53down, you know, look at what black nepotism. Look at the winds,
- 1:18:57that's true. You know what I'm saying, Like all of them can
- 1:18:59bring it, like look at you know what I'm saying. Look at the
- 1:19:00Jackson's like they all got something like white. Never tell them just hit.
- 1:19:04It's a little different. It is a little different. Yeah, they mess
- 1:19:08around and let you direct guy five the three or something. All right,
- 1:19:15Rod, you know, since you're bringing the high fire, let the people
- 1:19:18know where they can find you at. Oh yeah, man, just search
