Transcript
- 0:09Hello and welcome back to another episode of Banter
- 0:11Laurentia. How are you all doing?
- 0:13I hope you're doing great. Now for today's episode is going
- 0:16to be a short one. I just want to talk about the
- 0:18passing of all our dips. Now Oladipo's is a Nigerian
- 0:22rapper who I think his song about Die Young is just about to
- 0:27be released or was supposed to be released today.
- 0:30And he passed on just the early hours of this morning.
- 0:36It is sad because he's a very young guy in his 20s and I think
- 0:43this is just at the back of more bad.
- 0:47So everybody is kind of feeling in their feelings a little bit
- 0:51because why are young people, you know, depressed?
- 0:56Because according to reports, he's been going through
- 1:00emotional challenges for the past two years now.
- 1:03I think according to the whole story, he had issues with his
- 1:07record label, which is also run by Reminisce, who is also a
- 1:11rapper. He very kind of legendary rapper
- 1:15also in the entertainment industry.
- 1:18But I think one of the things that we're getting to notice now
- 1:22are young entertainers or young people who just feel that, who
- 1:26look up to their the big cats, basically Burna Boy, Wizkid that
- 1:32we do and the likes of, you know, Ram and all that.
- 1:36These are young people who are doing very well in the
- 1:39entertainment industry. And then you see these younger
- 1:42ones coming up and they want to be exactly like them.
- 1:45Most of them. They are making money, yes, but
- 1:48they want to sell out cinemas. They want their names to be
- 1:51known everywhere. They want people to like we need
- 1:55to start addressing issues because if you have this
- 2:00established successful cats, big cats, if that's what they want
- 2:08to be called, they need to start talking about their stories more
- 2:12because we see these younger ones who want to be like them.
- 2:17And once they are not selling out cinemas, they are not flying
- 2:21private jets, they are not buying cars the way that those
- 2:25ones are buying cars. They are not living the
- 2:27lifestyle that they are living. They become depressed.
- 2:30It is really sad. It is sad.
- 2:33I mean, we live in a social media world where everybody
- 2:35wants to be successful, everybody wants to be known,
- 2:39everybody wants to live the high life and there's nothing wrong
- 2:44with that. But I think people also
- 2:47understand that not everybody will blow.
- 2:50You can make money from the music industry, you can make
- 2:52money from the statement industry, you can make money as
- 2:56an actor and what have you, but you may not blow basically.
- 3:03And because there are a few job opportunities in Nigeria, you
- 3:06see them, they go into, they start using their talents
- 3:10basically. But then again, even that talent
- 3:12that they're trying to use, they make money.
- 3:15But then they are looking at the big cats and they're thinking,
- 3:18OK, I want to be like these people.
- 3:21And once it looks like they are not getting what they want,
- 3:25depression sets. I mean, and it starts, you know,
- 3:29you need to have people who tell their stories more, who talk
- 3:33about their challenges, who talk about how they have gone from
- 3:37point A to point B. Yes, there are people who are
- 3:42very lucky. They have Grace.
- 3:45They are young, in their 20s, and they've made a lot of money.
- 3:50They've gotten fame, fortune, the likes of Rama.
- 3:53But at the same time, there are some people who are also, let's
- 3:59say, the previous generation who made all those impacts when they
- 4:02were young and all that. But today, where are they?
- 4:06So fame and fortune is something that people should, but we need
- 4:10to start teaching these things in school because we have
- 4:13younger people who are. They look at social media.
- 4:18You know, you see somebody who is very young, very, you know,
- 4:23talented and before 20 they make their first million makes, you
- 4:27know, multiple millions before you know what is going on.
- 4:31But then again, when that money is not coming in as they used
- 4:34to, these people get depressed. They want, they want that high
- 4:38because it's a high that they've gotten and they want to continue
- 4:41in that trajectory. But what are you putting in
- 4:44place to ensure that you take care of your mental health?
- 4:48Because once easy money, easy comes, easy go.
- 4:53Let's say you release a song and that song did very well.
- 4:55Everybody wants you to appear in their show.
- 4:58You have endorsement deal here and there, but then once you
- 5:02can't produce another hit, then that becomes a problem and then
- 5:08depression sets in. So managing expectation is
- 5:11something that we should start teaching the youths, especially
- 5:15the under 20s, because we, I think those in their 50s or even
- 5:2140s should start talking about what challenges that they have
- 5:27faced. Let's say somebody who has made
- 5:29money in their 20s and now in their 40s, But then again you
- 5:33see these younger generations, no one even wants to listen
- 5:36because they feel OK, You have done this.
- 5:39That is your story. My story is going to be
- 5:41different. Everybody want to be on social
- 5:43media. You see a lot of people, they
- 5:45will tell you, I want to be a tik toker and want to be an
- 5:47influencer. I'm a YouTuber without any
- 5:51backup. Now there are some people doing
- 5:53that full time, Not a problem, but it took them a long time.
- 5:57Like I do firmly believe that something that you have done and
- 6:03it comes quick, you are not going to.
- 6:05There's no foundation. You don't have that solid
- 6:08foundation that can keep you grounded regardless of the, you
- 6:13know, faces you will be in. So record labels or parents, I
- 6:20mean I don't want to put this on record labels because families
- 6:23and parents have a full to play in these things.
- 6:26But also in this generation whereby social media is raising
- 6:30kids, social media is the one, even your your kids or your
- 6:36relation or relative your siblings, they are more exposed
- 6:40to social media stuff. It is very hard to now tell them
- 6:43listen do these do these or as you're doing this run this in
- 6:48parallel just in case nobody wants to hear like have a plan
- 6:52BI see a lot of people who say ohh if you want to do music, you
- 6:56do music make sure you give it your 100%.
- 7:00Now younger generation giving their 100% to let's say their
- 7:05talent, music acting and all that and that is not giving them
- 7:11what they want because if you look at what ladies he is
- 7:14successful. I mean he he has a good car, he
- 7:18has a good house, he's making money.
- 7:20But I just think he is not in the kind of level that he
- 7:27thoughts or he that he assumed that he would be.
- 7:31And that is when all these little little depression setting
- 7:35you start thinking about comparing your life.
- 7:38This is all social media does. You just sit down and start
- 7:40comparing your life with a B&C. It is so sad.
- 7:44It is sad that as young as it is, I don't even know how old he
- 7:48is, which is it is just sad. So he's 28 years old.
- 7:54The management released a statement and they said Body
- 7:58Wrapper or Lady Pupo or Labo Di or Lady Meiji, famously known as
- 8:04Oladipo's, is dead. His management announced the
- 8:06passing of the 28 years old singer via his Instagram page on
- 8:11Wednesday afternoon. The statement announcing the
- 8:13demise of the rapper hints that he has been battling with
- 8:17unstated ailment for the past two years.
- 8:21It is sad because he is about to release this song which he
- 8:29titled Die Young. I mean it's just sad.
- 8:36I saw a video of him, you know, talking about more bad justice
- 8:40for more bad. Even his DP still has more bad
- 8:44on it and you start asking yourself what is going on, what
- 8:48is going on. This is just sad.
- 8:50We wish to family and friends the fortitude to bear the loss
- 8:54and for anybody going through any challenges.
- 8:57We wish that you find the help that you need.
- 9:00You talk to somebody and if your craft or your talent is what is
- 9:07causing your depression, you can always move to something else.
- 9:11I know how hard it is when, let's see a singer who makes 10
- 9:18million for a show. What job can you give that
- 9:22person to do? You know, they cannot go back to
- 9:25office work or anything. So I always have, you know, a
- 9:28cousin who wants to be a singer. And I said, you know, you're a
- 9:32singer, you're trying to break into the entertainment industry,
- 9:35you want to sing and all that. What I will tell you to do is
- 9:38don't just focus on music. Think about writing, think about
- 9:44learning how to do instruments, think about learning beats, how
- 9:47to create beats. Because if you go into that
- 9:50space and let's say the singing part of it is not working, you
- 9:55might be creating beats for people or you can be playing an
- 9:59instrument or you can you can walk behind the scenes shooting
- 10:04videos, video editing. I know that takes more money.
- 10:08Ball have you make 1010 million per sure, let's say, even if
- 10:12it's a million per shoe. You can put things as you're
- 10:16getting contacts, knowing people and different things.
- 10:19You can also tell them, OK, I do this, I do that, learning the
- 10:23process. Be an all rounder so that when
- 10:26one is not working, you can always lean on the other one to
- 10:29make sure that you know you push yourself out there.
- 10:33Because they heard one of his lyrics when he was saying that
- 10:37there was no inspiration for him to sing like he couldn't sing.
- 10:40And that can be depressing, especially for somebody who.
- 10:44That is his full time job. He's just like waking up in the
- 10:48morning and you're thinking, I don't have the will to go to
- 10:51work, but I want to go to work because I need to put food on
- 10:54the table. Also, I think his dad passed
- 10:58recently and one thing he was saying was the responsibility.
- 11:02Responsibility. People now give kids a whole lot
- 11:06of responsibility without thinking about the mental health
- 11:10of that child. I understand that things are
- 11:13very difficult and to most children now because of the
- 11:17Internet around the breadwinners of the family.
- 11:20But even at that, parents need to be careful of the kind of
- 11:25responsibility you give to children.
- 11:27They have their own problems. They are going through their own
- 11:29challenges and if they now have to worry about taking care of,
- 11:35you know, the feeding, the expenses of every other person,
- 11:39that is a double stress on that person who is already going
- 11:45through their own stress. So sometimes live children to be
- 11:50children. Allow them to find their path.
- 11:53If you as a parent, you're struggling, you can just go and
- 11:58struggle. Honestly, just go and struggle
- 12:00and leave that child alone for that child to be.
- 12:03Even if they are spending the whole money, they're not giving
- 12:06you any money. They're trying to find their
- 12:08path. One day as a parent, they're
- 12:11going to remember you, but giving them response.
- 12:14Or even if they are trying to take that responsibility and
- 12:18ensure that you cannot curtail that because they may be happy
- 12:23to do it when they were getting it, but when that money is no
- 12:27longer coming in, it's going to become a burden on them because
- 12:31they are thinking, oh, I need to take care of this.
- 12:33I need to take care of that. I need to do this, I need to do
- 12:36that. That becomes a challenge.
- 12:39It becomes a challenge. I am not saying that was what
- 12:42happened to him. I am just saying that in this
- 12:45generation, in this day and age, the Internet of people looking
- 12:49at other people make money, spend money and live lavish
- 12:53lifestyle, there is pressure on people to be a certain way,
- 12:58especially those in the entertainment industry.
- 13:00But that does not mean that you should let it affect your mental
- 13:05health. Check on your kids, check on
- 13:09everybody around you that you know is going through something.
- 13:14That's all I have to say. So thank you very much for
- 13:18watching this episode. Please like, like, like and
- 13:20share. Thank you very much.
- 13:21Bye, bye.
