- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Kate Dresden and welcome to Kate's Devotional Podcast.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I drop my podcast every Wednesday.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: It's always a five minute or less devotional to bring you encouragement as we try
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: to live our lives according to the Bible.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: So glad you're here.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to talk about friends.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We all need them.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I was looking and I found a survey called the 2021 American Perspectives Survey.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: It shows that more Americans are reporting fewer close friendships than ever.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Can you relate?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: You know, many people out there, they're longing to find close friends who truly care about them.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: When you feel like you don't have people who love and support you, it can be really sad and lonely.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And we all know there's a big difference between social media friends and real friends, right?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: People can be very popular on TikTok or Instagram, but have very few true friends in real life.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: There's probably a lot of popular people out there who are still searching for real friendship.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: The good news is that if you're a believer in Christ,
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: you already have a friend who's very eager to develop a deeper relationship with you.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: God is the perfect friend because He's, well, perfect.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: There are so many reasons why, but today I'm just gonna give you three.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Number one, His availability.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Jesus is there for us every minute of every day.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You know, if one of my friends called me at 3 a.m., I would be irritated.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And if it wasn't an emergency, I'd be mad.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: But you know, that's never the case with Jesus.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: He encourages us to come to Him anytime, day or night.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Psalms 121:4 (New King James Version)
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: "Behold, he who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: We don't ever have to worry about waking God up.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Isn't that nice to know that He's always there when we call on His name?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Always.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: We can't say that about human friends.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: #2 - His Empathy
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Christ cares for us more than we can even comprehend.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: You know, even our closest friends can't completely understand us.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: They can never know just exactly how we're thinking or feeling.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: But that's never an issue with God because He created us.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: He knows everything about us.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I love the verse in Psalms 139.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: It's verses 1, 3, and 4.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to read this time out of the New American Standard Bible, 1995 update.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: God knows what we're thinking before we do.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: It's great to know our Lord cares about us in spite of knowing all of our faults.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: #3 - His dependability.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Everyone has been let down by a friend at some point because we're not perfect.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: It happens.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: but God will never let us down.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And Psalms 1830, I'm going to read out the New King James version.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: It says, as for God, his way is perfect.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: The word of the Lord is proven.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: He is a shield to all who trust in him.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: We can completely depend on the savior.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: He makes our life worth living and He brings meaning to our very existence.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: No one's going to find a better friend.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And no,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: it's not quite the same as a human friend that you're sitting across the table with
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: and you hear their voice and see their facial expressions.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But actually, I'd say it's better.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: We never have to doubt his love.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: We never have to worry if he's distracted by anything else going on in the world or
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: not paying attention to what we have to say.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: We never have to doubt His motives.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: There are so many wonderful things about a relationship with God.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And He wants to have a deeper relationship with us.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So how do we do that?
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: we spend time in prayer and reading the very words of the Bible that He wrote just
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: for us to teach us more about Him and the kind of life He wants us to live.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So I encourage you to spend some time with him today.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I'm going to be doing the same.
