- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, So for this week, I am going to
- 0:02Speaker 1: be playing a replay of one of my newsletter videos
- 0:06Speaker 1: that I made about a month ago about creating player
- 0:09Speaker 1: plans for your pictures. So I'm going to break down
- 0:12Speaker 1: my process and show my exact plan of how I
- 0:15Speaker 1: create goals from a mechanical standpoint, stuff execution as well
- 0:20Speaker 1: as controlling the running game and the mental side. If
- 0:23Speaker 1: you want to go over to YouTube to actually see
- 0:25Speaker 1: me walking through this, I would definitely recommend doing that,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but you'll also still get some value by listening to
- 0:30Speaker 1: this episode as well.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So without further ado, let's jump in.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Every player wants to develop, They want to have goals,
- 0:47Speaker 1: They want to have something that they are striving towards
- 0:49Speaker 1: become the best version of themselves. The issue is not
- 0:52Speaker 1: every player knows how to number one, create effective goals
- 0:56Speaker 1: and then also create a plan in order to accomplish it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: So this whole idea of having player development goals having
- 1:03Speaker 1: these benchmarks were reaching for, it's great, but sometimes I
- 1:06Speaker 1: can get a little messy with how you go about
- 1:08Speaker 1: creating that plan. So today I'm just going to walk
- 1:10Speaker 1: you through the main categories that I use when developing goals.
- 1:14Speaker 1: For players and then give you a glimpse into how
- 1:16Speaker 1: you might want to program this and what this could
- 1:18Speaker 1: look like to really make sure that you are pushing
- 1:20Speaker 1: the needle forward on the things that you do think
- 1:22Speaker 1: are important for their development. So if you look here
- 1:25Speaker 1: at the top, we have goals. So this is a
- 1:27Speaker 1: sheet that a player of mine that I work with
- 1:29Speaker 1: would get where it would have their goals and it
- 1:31Speaker 1: would also have the plan in order to get there.
- 1:34Speaker 1: What does their daily routine look like, what is their throwing,
- 1:36Speaker 1: what is their drillwork? What are their bullpens look like?
- 1:39Speaker 1: So here at the top I'm going to show you
- 1:41Speaker 1: all the options essentially of how I like to think
- 1:43Speaker 1: about this and how I bucket them. So the first
- 1:45Speaker 1: category for goal setting is mechanical, so anything mechanics right,
- 1:49Speaker 1: anything with the body. The second one is pitch development,
- 1:52Speaker 1: so this is things like increasing velocity or improving the
- 1:55Speaker 1: movement of a pitch.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Then we have the.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Third category execution, So this is purely getting over the plate. Now,
- 2:02Speaker 1: so this could be getting ahead, whether it's first pitch
- 2:04Speaker 1: strikes or early in ahead. Maybe it's you know, your
- 2:07Speaker 1: usage of your pitches, just being able to optimize the
- 2:09Speaker 1: way you're using your pitches and using that to your
- 2:12Speaker 1: full advantage. It can really be anything that's over the
- 2:14Speaker 1: plate and more of an execution command type focus. It
- 2:17Speaker 1: could be an individual pitch even of you know, let's
- 2:19Speaker 1: just say your fastball in zone percentage is low, maybe
- 2:21Speaker 1: your execution goal is increasing the fastball in zone. Then
- 2:25Speaker 1: the last bucket that I like to use is CRG
- 2:27Speaker 1: and mental game. So CRG is just controlling the running
- 2:30Speaker 1: game and the mental game. It can be a very
- 2:32Speaker 1: broad category. And these two categories, you know, they're not
- 2:36Speaker 1: really the same, but I bucket them into one because
- 2:39Speaker 1: usually not every player needs both of these goals. I
- 2:42Speaker 1: would say that everyone has some sort of mental game
- 2:44Speaker 1: goal that they probably should be working towards, but not
- 2:46Speaker 1: everybody necessarily needs that controlling the running game goal because
- 2:49Speaker 1: they might already be dialed in with holding runners, they
- 2:51Speaker 1: might be quick to home, and they might not really
- 2:53Speaker 1: need to worry about that. So I'm going to go
- 2:55Speaker 1: step by step about what some of these options are
- 2:57Speaker 1: within this. Back in August, I ran my three day
- 3:00Speaker 1: Pitching masterclass for five pitchers. This was a very exclusive
- 3:04Speaker 1: camp where they were able to get a lot of
- 3:06Speaker 1: specific data on their pitching mechanics as well as their
- 3:09Speaker 1: pitch movement.
- 3:10Speaker 2: It went incredibly well.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Players got great information that they are now applying and
- 3:14Speaker 1: using to improve their game. I'm going to be running
- 3:16Speaker 1: two more camps this winter, at the end of December
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the beginning of January in Phoenix, Arizona. The exact
- 3:22Speaker 1: dates are still to be announced, but I am having
- 3:25Speaker 1: a wait list right now for anyone interested in joining,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so you'll be the first to know when the dates
- 3:30Speaker 1: are released. If you're interested in that, check out the
- 3:32Speaker 1: show notes below. All right back to the show. So
- 3:35Speaker 1: for mechanical we can see I have an example here
- 3:37Speaker 1: of what we can use, and I'll go through that
- 3:38Speaker 1: here in a minute, but first I want to show
- 3:40Speaker 1: you all the options in the way I like to
- 3:42Speaker 1: think about it. So from a mechanical standpoint, we have
- 3:46Speaker 1: arm action that could be a goal. We could have
- 3:48Speaker 1: an arm slot goal. So maybe we're trying to lower
- 3:50Speaker 1: the slot, or we're trying to raise the slot, or
- 3:51Speaker 1: maybe a guy's out of playing a rotation and we're
- 3:53Speaker 1: trying just to get him back in playing. It could
- 3:55Speaker 1: be back leg focus, it could be lead leg focus,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and then it could be torso fo so this could
- 4:00Speaker 1: be just the way the upper body is rotating. There's
- 4:03Speaker 1: could be some nuance to this, Like these are pretty
- 4:05Speaker 1: general categories, but you could get pretty messy if you
- 4:08Speaker 1: start to literally have a goal category for everything that
- 4:11Speaker 1: you can possibly think of. You could imagine the list
- 4:13Speaker 1: would go on and on and on. So what I
- 4:15Speaker 1: like to do is have more of a broad goal,
- 4:17Speaker 1: like what is the general area that we're trying to
- 4:19Speaker 1: work on, and then below that I have a question
- 4:22Speaker 1: that says what specifically so we can dive into exactly
- 4:24Speaker 1: what we need to accomplish. So in this case, I
- 4:27Speaker 1: have back leg as the goal, and what specifically is
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'm trying to increase the back leg inflection and the
- 4:34Speaker 1: direction of that back leg load, So trying to get
- 4:37Speaker 1: that guy to bend more, try to hinge better, a
- 4:39Speaker 1: little bit deeper, as well as making sure the direction
- 4:41Speaker 1: of that load is good. Because he could bend and
- 4:43Speaker 1: get more reflection, but that doesn't mean that he's actually
- 4:45Speaker 1: hinging at the hips. It could be that he's being
- 4:47Speaker 1: pushed forward, but he's still getting a lot of flection.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So in this case, in this example, we want to
- 4:52Speaker 1: make sure that we are gaining flection but we're also
- 4:54Speaker 1: doing it in the right direction. Now for the pitch
- 4:57Speaker 1: development goal, So this one's pretty simple. Two categories velocity.
- 5:01Speaker 1: This could be for any pitch type could be fastball,
- 5:04Speaker 1: or maybe it's a specific pitch like a slider or
- 5:06Speaker 1: a cutter. Then we have a movement goal as a
- 5:09Speaker 1: potential option as well. Once again, this could be for
- 5:11Speaker 1: any pitch. So in this situation or this example, I
- 5:15Speaker 1: have the goal specifically being to increase movement on the
- 5:17Speaker 1: slider and to get it to have horizontal break of
- 5:20Speaker 1: at least ten inches or greater than ten inches. Now
- 5:24Speaker 1: moving on to execution. So this one, there could be
- 5:26Speaker 1: a lot of options. So some ideas could be first
- 5:29Speaker 1: pitch strikes, increasing that Early in ahead So for those
- 5:32Speaker 1: that don't know, early in ahead is I'll go through
- 5:34Speaker 1: it real briefly. And early is anytime the balls put
- 5:38Speaker 1: in play on three pitches or less not counting two
- 5:40Speaker 1: to oh, and a head is anytime you get to
- 5:43Speaker 1: an two or a one to two count, regardless of
- 5:45Speaker 1: what happens after that, And same with early, It doesn't
- 5:48Speaker 1: matter if it's a hit or what happens if the
- 5:49Speaker 1: ball's put in play on three pitches or less excluding
- 5:52Speaker 1: two to oh, you get credit for an early. If
- 5:54Speaker 1: you get to an O two or a one two
- 5:55Speaker 1: count you get credit for and ahead. Regardless of what
- 5:58Speaker 1: happens after that. You can strike them out, a hit,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you can walk the guy, doesn't matter, you still get credit.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So you add all those up and divide it by
- 6:05Speaker 1: the batter's face and that's how you get your early
- 6:07Speaker 1: and a head percentage. So average the big leagues is
- 6:09Speaker 1: about seventy two seventy three percent, so at the minimum,
- 6:12Speaker 1: we want to be at seventy percent.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Another option could be en zone.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So just like I said before, maybe it's a specific
- 6:18Speaker 1: pitch that you have to improve the end zone with.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Maybe it's a fastball or a slider or a changeup,
- 6:22Speaker 1: whatever it might be. And if you don't have in
- 6:24Speaker 1: zone numbers, because in zone is different from strike percentage,
- 6:27Speaker 1: So if you don't have access to, you know, an
- 6:29Speaker 1: in zone data track man or you know, whatever it
- 6:32Speaker 1: is like if you're at the high school level, probably
- 6:34Speaker 1: don't have this, or you definitely don't have this college
- 6:36Speaker 1: level some schools will. But you could also replace this
- 6:39Speaker 1: with just increasing the strike percentage of a pitch pitch usage.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So I talked about this a little bit ago. This
- 6:44Speaker 1: could be, you know, trying to optimize the usage of
- 6:46Speaker 1: your pitches. Maybe your best pitch is your slider and
- 6:49Speaker 1: you're only throwing at fifteen percent of the time, so
- 6:51Speaker 1: the goal might be to increase it to twenty or
- 6:53Speaker 1: twenty five percent. The next one could be location. This
- 6:57Speaker 1: is another option. So maybe you do a good job
- 6:59Speaker 1: of throwing your fastball for a strike, but you're living
- 7:01Speaker 1: middle middle and we need to get that more in
- 7:03Speaker 1: or out or up whatever you deem as the location
- 7:06Speaker 1: that's going to optimize that pitch. You could get very
- 7:08Speaker 1: specific with what quadrant of the zone or what half
- 7:10Speaker 1: of the zone you're trying to go to with a pitch.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And then we could get really specific with maybe it's
- 7:15Speaker 1: a lefty or a righty issue, So we could go
- 7:17Speaker 1: through platoon splits. Is it a lefty that I need
- 7:19Speaker 1: to throw more strikes to?
- 7:20Speaker 2: Is it a righty?
- 7:21Speaker 1: And you can really break down exactly what that specific
- 7:23Speaker 1: goal will be for a lefty or a righty. And
- 7:26Speaker 1: the last one is CRG and mental game, So we
- 7:30Speaker 1: have potential options. Is time to the plate. This would
- 7:33Speaker 1: be a very common one for controlling the running game
- 7:35Speaker 1: guys that are too slow trying to increase their time
- 7:37Speaker 1: to home or make it faster. Another one could be
- 7:40Speaker 1: improving your pickoff move. Maybe you have a really poor
- 7:42Speaker 1: pickoff move and you need to have quicker feed, or
- 7:44Speaker 1: you need have a better move as a lefty. Another one,
- 7:47Speaker 1: more general, could be something fielding related. Maybe you really
- 7:49Speaker 1: struggle with bunts or pfps in some fashion that you
- 7:52Speaker 1: really need to improve now. So the mental side of
- 7:54Speaker 1: the things could be pre pitch routine. Just having a
- 7:56Speaker 1: consistent pre pitch routine can go a long ways, so
- 8:00Speaker 1: you want to make sure that you're developing that and
- 8:02Speaker 1: you have consistency with it. So it could be I
- 8:05Speaker 1: need to just create a pre pitch routines I don't
- 8:06Speaker 1: have one, or it's I just need to be more
- 8:08Speaker 1: consistent with it and use it every single pitch. And
- 8:11Speaker 1: the last category for this could just be the mental
- 8:14Speaker 1: side very broad, so I'll leave that to you on
- 8:16Speaker 1: what specifically you think that person needs to improve. Maybe it's,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, turning the page after a rough inning quickly
- 8:22Speaker 1: and being able to stay focused in the present moment
- 8:24Speaker 1: and not getting upset or showing bad body language. Could
- 8:27Speaker 1: really be anything that you think is important that that
- 8:30Speaker 1: player needs to improve. So now that we have our
- 8:32Speaker 1: goals and we know how to organize these and how
- 8:35Speaker 1: to break them down by each category, now let's go
- 8:38Speaker 1: through an example of how this could look. So, like
- 8:40Speaker 1: I said before, I created a goal as an example
- 8:43Speaker 1: for the back leg. So increasing back leg flection and direction,
- 8:46Speaker 1: pitch development, increase the slider horizontal break to ten inches
- 8:49Speaker 1: or more, execution, increase the early and ahead from sixty
- 8:52Speaker 1: five to seventy percent, and then a time to the
- 8:55Speaker 1: plate goal of one point.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Three or less.
- 8:58Speaker 1: So it's great that we have goals, right like it's
- 8:59Speaker 1: it's great that we figured out what is the low
- 9:01Speaker 1: hanging fruit for this player? What do we think is
- 9:03Speaker 1: going to optimize his performance? But now the real work begins.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Now we create a plan that helps us accomplish these goals.
- 9:09Speaker 1: So first we want to know what is the throwing schedule,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and this is you know, obviously this is an off season.
- 9:14Speaker 1: We can be very specific in season a little bit different,
- 9:17Speaker 1: but this is more of an off season approach where
- 9:19Speaker 1: we're throwing two bullpens a week. So this is just
- 9:22Speaker 1: a general layout. Bullpens Monday, Friday, low days Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and then a medium day on Wednesday, more of a workday,
- 9:29Speaker 1: so we would have our warm up, mobility, dynamic warm up,
- 9:32Speaker 1: our pre throw arm care routine, pre throw plios, So
- 9:36Speaker 1: this is more for me. Pre throw plios is more
- 9:38Speaker 1: of just to get the arm moving more highly constrained drills. Here,
- 9:41Speaker 1: we're not necessarily getting crazy high with the intensity, more
- 9:44Speaker 1: so just patterning some stuff and getting us ready for
- 9:46Speaker 1: throwing so that we don't waste throws when we start.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We're actually ready to work on stuff and we don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: have to start from thirty feet away.
- 9:52Speaker 2: We can actually go.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Into some meaningful throws. Then we want to break it
- 9:55Speaker 1: down by category. So now we have our cashplay for routine.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We see what our intensity and our rough distance is
- 10:00Speaker 1: going to be on those low in medium days and
- 10:03Speaker 1: bullpen days. Low days are super light, we're not going
- 10:06Speaker 1: to focus on that, but let's focus on the medium
- 10:08Speaker 1: and bullpen days. So in these medium and bullpen days,
- 10:11Speaker 1: we're gonna have a really good opportunity to work on
- 10:13Speaker 1: our pitches, our mechanics, our time to the play, as
- 10:16Speaker 1: well as the execution goal. So this is really where
- 10:19Speaker 1: the meat of that program is going to be so
- 10:21Speaker 1: in these medium days, we start with playing catch. You know,
- 10:23Speaker 1: this is just a rough estimate what someone might do
- 10:25Speaker 1: going out to ninety to one, twenty seventy to eighty
- 10:27Speaker 1: percent effort. At the end of catch play, a little
- 10:30Speaker 1: bit of grip work. Specifically with the slider, we want
- 10:33Speaker 1: to work on the shape. So I would want this
- 10:35Speaker 1: guy to be using a dot ball for that sweeper
- 10:37Speaker 1: that's going to allow it to get ten inches or more,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and I will be educating that player, and I would
- 10:41Speaker 1: have you educate that player on where does that dot
- 10:43Speaker 1: need to be when that ball is thrown. So they're
- 10:45Speaker 1: getting instant feedback and catch play. As we all know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: guys in cash play all day. They'll tell you the
- 10:49Speaker 1: pitch is moving great, it looks awesome. Their partner will
- 10:52Speaker 1: tell them it's great, but you don't really know. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: I think sometimes it doesn't carry over from catchplay to
- 10:57Speaker 1: the bullpen because you're misled on how it's actually moving.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So having a dopball just gives you instant feedback that's
- 11:03Speaker 1: really helpful in cash play to know if you're moving
- 11:05Speaker 1: in the right direction. And then we would go into
- 11:08Speaker 1: after cash playing. We did our spin work with a slider.
- 11:11Speaker 1: We would then do some drill work on the mound,
- 11:13Speaker 1: so maybe we're doing a posterior step back to foot plant.
- 11:16Speaker 1: So I won't show you what this looks like, but
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's more of a loading drill, non throwing. You're holding
- 11:20Speaker 1: a medicine ball or a water bag and you're focusing
- 11:22Speaker 1: on that initial move into that load into footplant, no
- 11:26Speaker 1: actual throw, no rotation, just that first initial move. Then
- 11:29Speaker 1: there could be a water back series where we're starting
- 11:31Speaker 1: to focus on more of that loading pattern with a
- 11:32Speaker 1: little instability and maybe adding a rotational aspect to it.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Still no throwing, and then we'll finish up with a
- 11:38Speaker 1: couple throws. So the first one could be a step back.
- 11:41Speaker 1: This could be a traditional step back where you're sepping
- 11:42Speaker 1: back towards second, it could be a step back posterily.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So if I'm a rity stepping back towards first base,
- 11:48Speaker 1: if I'm a lefty stepping back towards third base, to
- 11:50Speaker 1: help that pattern of loading back behind me that direction
- 11:54Speaker 1: of that load. So this is more of a direction
- 11:56Speaker 1: more than anything. So maybe you do four throws with
- 11:59Speaker 1: the red ball, like to usually go a little bit
- 12:01Speaker 1: overload on medium days, just so that the arm isn't
- 12:03Speaker 1: moving crazy fast, and we make sure we're keeping that
- 12:06Speaker 1: intensity fairly low.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But this can be flexible.
- 12:08Speaker 1: If a guy responds better to more of the five
- 12:10Speaker 1: ounce plyole, that's perfectly fine. Definitely probably want to do
- 12:12Speaker 1: underload work on a medium day, so keep it around
- 12:16Speaker 1: around a five ounce plyoball or a little bit heavier,
- 12:18Speaker 1: like a seven ounce. After that drill, if we're going
- 12:21Speaker 1: to work on that flexi, a single leg hop throw
- 12:23Speaker 1: could be a great option because we're going to jump up,
- 12:25Speaker 1: we're gonna have to absorb that force, which is going
- 12:27Speaker 1: to force us to get a little bit of flextion
- 12:29Speaker 1: in that back leg as we're driving towards home, So
- 12:31Speaker 1: that could be a really good drill to work on that.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Then we go on to a bulpen day. So bulpin
- 12:37Speaker 1: day very similar to the medium day. We stretch it
- 12:39Speaker 1: out a little bit further, higher intensity. At the end
- 12:42Speaker 1: of cash play, a little bit of grip work once
- 12:44Speaker 1: again using the dop ball with the slider to make
- 12:46Speaker 1: sure that it is spinning the way we want it to.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And then I like to do plios on the mound
- 12:51Speaker 1: before the bullpen as well. Now then the volume will
- 12:54Speaker 1: be lower, but I definitely want to prime some of
- 12:55Speaker 1: those movements before we get into our bullpen session, so
- 12:58Speaker 1: it'll be the same drill package, the ball usage and
- 13:01Speaker 1: the volume is going to be a little bit different.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And then we would move on to the bullpen, and
- 13:06Speaker 1: this is where we can really start to work on
- 13:08Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of different things. So you
- 13:10Speaker 1: could do this multiple ways. You could do it to
- 13:12Speaker 1: where you're working on, you know, everything in one bullpen.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I probably want to suggest that just because you're not
- 13:18Speaker 1: gonna get a lot of meaningful reps on one thing,
- 13:20Speaker 1: it's just going to be a little bit of everything
- 13:21Speaker 1: which might not push the needle. So what I would
- 13:24Speaker 1: do is, let's just say a Monday bullpen, we're focused
- 13:27Speaker 1: on that slider the whole session. It's a pitch design session,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and we are dialed in on that slider. Doesn't mean
- 13:32Speaker 1: we don't throw their pitches. In fact, I would suggest
- 13:34Speaker 1: that you do throw other pitches because we want to
- 13:36Speaker 1: make sure that we are slowly adjusting a pitcher to
- 13:39Speaker 1: that extra volume with a pitch. Because if we're trying
- 13:42Speaker 1: to increase the horizontal break on something or increase the
- 13:44Speaker 1: movement on any pitch, we're going to be.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Trying some things.
- 13:46Speaker 1: We're going to be doing different things, maybe with the
- 13:48Speaker 1: hand and with the body as we're throwing, and the
- 13:51Speaker 1: body might not be ready for the stress that's gonna
- 13:54Speaker 1: be put on it with some of those different positions,
- 13:55Speaker 1: So we want to make sure that we're careful not
- 13:57Speaker 1: to overload too much. So I usually like to be
- 14:00Speaker 1: around thirty to forty percent usage of whatever that new
- 14:03Speaker 1: pitch is that we're trying to develop. So in this
- 14:05Speaker 1: case a twenty five pitch bullpen or a twenty four
- 14:07Speaker 1: pitch bullpen, maybe I'm throwing ten sliders, nine sliders, eight
- 14:11Speaker 1: to ten sliders somewhere in there, just to really make
- 14:14Speaker 1: sure that we are slowly cooking them and making sure
- 14:16Speaker 1: we're not overdoing it as we're getting.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Them used to this.
- 14:20Speaker 1: So now we'll go to sorry, this is freezing on
- 14:23Speaker 1: me a little bit. So now I'll show you us
- 14:25Speaker 1: an example of this. So we might go a couple
- 14:28Speaker 1: of fastballs, three sliders, a couple of fastballs, a couple sliders,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and then we could alternate just to get them used
- 14:33Speaker 1: to not throwing it multiple times in a row, just
- 14:35Speaker 1: like they might in a game, and then we'll mix
- 14:37Speaker 1: in a change up or whatever their third pitch is.
- 14:39Speaker 1: If they have a fourth pitch, you'll have to add
- 14:41Speaker 1: that in it somewhere, but really just slowly cook them
- 14:43Speaker 1: into getting it a little bit more randomized. Right early
- 14:47Speaker 1: on in the bullpen session, we might want to feel it.
- 14:48Speaker 1: We're trying to get something, so we might throw three
- 14:50Speaker 1: in a row, two in a row, but eventually we
- 14:52Speaker 1: want to make it a little bit more randomized to
- 14:54Speaker 1: make sure that we are pushing the needle forward and
- 14:56Speaker 1: that we're able to do this not just when we're
- 14:58Speaker 1: feeling over and over again, but actually more game like
- 15:00Speaker 1: to where we throw a different pitch in between and
- 15:03Speaker 1: maybe go two pitches without throwing it. Now, I'm going
- 15:06Speaker 1: to reload this real quick because it's a little fuzzy
- 15:08Speaker 1: right now for some reason.
- 15:10Speaker 2: There we go, it's better. Okay.
- 15:12Speaker 1: So, like I said, goal is ten inches of horizontal
- 15:15Speaker 1: breaker were on this pitch, and what we want to
- 15:17Speaker 1: do is we want to track that. If you're using
- 15:19Speaker 1: TrackMan or whatever you're using, obviously you have to use
- 15:21Speaker 1: something to measure this. Specifically, I would suggest TrackMan over
- 15:25Speaker 1: rap Sodo, just because it's going to be a little
- 15:26Speaker 1: bit more accurate with the movement numbers. So let's just
- 15:29Speaker 1: say this is a five week block that you're working
- 15:31Speaker 1: on this pitch for all the sliders here in this
- 15:34Speaker 1: slider horizontal break week one, put how much horizontal break
- 15:37Speaker 1: there was every time he kills a slider. Put it
- 15:39Speaker 1: in there, and then at the bottom you can put
- 15:41Speaker 1: what the average was. You'll do that for five weeks
- 15:43Speaker 1: and then you'll be able to see the progression over
- 15:45Speaker 1: time of whether it improved, didn't improve, what worked, what
- 15:48Speaker 1: didn't work. You could even have a note section down
- 15:51Speaker 1: here that where you write down some of the cues
- 15:53Speaker 1: or grips that worked for them so that he make
- 15:54Speaker 1: sure that he remembers them and continues to use them.
- 15:57Speaker 1: If you have a TrackMan, like I said, you probably
- 15:59Speaker 1: do if you're doing this type of stuff, it will
- 16:01Speaker 1: be saved in there. But this is just kind of
- 16:03Speaker 1: a simpler way for you just to make sure or
- 16:05Speaker 1: be able to see it on one page what's going
- 16:07Speaker 1: on with that slider and how the progression looks. So
- 16:11Speaker 1: now let's look at a Friday bullpen. So this could
- 16:13Speaker 1: be a bullpen where we are focusing more on the execution.
- 16:17Speaker 1: So maybe it's we're working on an early and ahead
- 16:19Speaker 1: of seventy percent, and we're also working on our time
- 16:21Speaker 1: to the plate of one to three or less. So
- 16:24Speaker 1: early and ahead only requires three pitches in order to
- 16:27Speaker 1: achieve it right, So it's a ball and play on
- 16:28Speaker 1: three pitches or less, which in a bullpen setting there's
- 16:30Speaker 1: not a ball put in play. So we're mainly focused
- 16:33Speaker 1: on the ahead version, which is getting to either an
- 16:35Speaker 1: O two or a one two count. So what I
- 16:38Speaker 1: would suggest is doing three pitch at bats, alternating between
- 16:41Speaker 1: a writing and a lefty. If you have a real batter, awesome,
- 16:43Speaker 1: put him in there. If not, a dummy will work perfectly.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And then you could just circle. You could print this
- 16:49Speaker 1: out and just circle a B for balls for strike,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and you'll be able to count up at the end
- 16:53Speaker 1: how many early and aheads did he get So we
- 16:55Speaker 1: can see here. Let's just say the first one he
- 16:57Speaker 1: threw a ball ball strike that would not count as
- 16:59Speaker 1: it early news. Next one he goes strike strike, ball
- 17:02Speaker 1: that would count. Next one strike strike strike that would count,
- 17:05Speaker 1: next one, all three balls that would not count, So
- 17:08Speaker 1: add them all up, and then every week you can
- 17:11Speaker 1: add in here and see what his progression is on
- 17:13Speaker 1: how well is he doing with early in ahead. So
- 17:15Speaker 1: here I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I have eight of them, so four lefties, four righty's,
- 17:22Speaker 1: So he's facing eight batters a week. So over time,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you know, after these five weeks, that's forty at bats,
- 17:27Speaker 1: that's four simulated at bats, and we can see is
- 17:29Speaker 1: he trending in the right direction or not. So this
- 17:33Speaker 1: just gives you a general layout of how you could
- 17:35Speaker 1: do this right, Like these bullpens could be structured multiple
- 17:37Speaker 1: different ways, but this is just a way that I
- 17:40Speaker 1: like to think about it. I think it makes things
- 17:42Speaker 1: a little bit more simpler on you as a coach
- 17:44Speaker 1: when you have goals bucketed, because let's face it, if
- 17:49Speaker 1: we're bouncing around from one thing to the next and
- 17:51Speaker 1: we don't have a clear plan, the player is not
- 17:53Speaker 1: going to make progress, and if they do, it's going
- 17:55Speaker 1: to be really, really difficult to replicate it. But the
- 17:57Speaker 1: more things that you're tracking, the more things that our
- 18:00Speaker 1: systematized trying to find the word for that stftware to
- 18:03Speaker 1: say for me, the more we're able to do that,
- 18:06Speaker 1: the easier it's going to be to track and figure
- 18:08Speaker 1: out what worked, what didn't work, and if something did work,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we keep doing it and maybe we can try that
- 18:13Speaker 1: with another player. If it didn't work, and if we
- 18:15Speaker 1: try that with multiple players, maybe that's something that just
- 18:17Speaker 1: doesn't work. And when you're not tracking things, it just
- 18:19Speaker 1: can be difficult to know you know what the best
- 18:22Speaker 1: solutions are for each category.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So I love your guys feedback.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I'd love to know you know which one resonated with you,
- 18:28Speaker 1: what things you like didn't like, and maybe share some
- 18:31Speaker 1: of your ideas if you have your own development plan,
