Latest / Wired To Hunt Podcast / Ep. 938: Back 40 - Can’t Find a Buck to Hunt? Don’t Panic. Do This!
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Don't panic. That's the worst thing you can do, right.
- 0:03Speaker 2: You can't expect to always just sit around and have
- 0:06Speaker 2: one show up.
- 0:07Speaker 3: It's just not the reality.
- 0:08Speaker 4: It really goes back to what was left there last year,
- 0:11Speaker 4: which it was good last year, and there was some
- 0:13Speaker 4: really good upcumbers. There were some nice bocks that you
- 0:15Speaker 4: were hunting that you were happy to tag. It'll be
- 0:17Speaker 4: good to get in this year.
- 0:18Speaker 5: Welcome back to another round of Back forty, where we
- 0:21Speaker 5: traveled across the Midwest, bringing a group of experts to
- 0:25Speaker 5: dive into one single question, one white tailed dilemma that
- 0:29Speaker 5: we face throughout the build up of the white tail season.
- 0:32Speaker 5: Back forty is brought to you by land dot com,
- 0:34Speaker 5: the leading online real estate marketplace to find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural,
- 0:40Speaker 5: or hunting properties here in the US. This week, we're
- 0:43Speaker 5: diving into a question and topic that I think a
- 0:46Speaker 5: lot of people may be sitting in right now. And
- 0:48Speaker 5: some people have comfort with this and some people are
- 0:52Speaker 5: likely very nervous. And so what we're diving into is
- 0:55Speaker 5: if you've been running cameras, you've been trying to scout,
- 0:57Speaker 5: and you haven't found a deer yet, that gets you excited. Now,
- 1:01Speaker 5: A lot of people right now will say, well, yeah,
- 1:03Speaker 5: dear shift, but where do deer shift and is this
- 1:06Speaker 5: something that you can bank on? Do you have intel
- 1:08Speaker 5: from last year? And we brought in our panel of
- 1:10Speaker 5: experts that have decades of experience that can help you
- 1:14Speaker 5: recognize these patterns that may be impactful for you to
- 1:17Speaker 5: develop a really good game plan for right now to
- 1:19Speaker 5: potentially find a buck to hunt, or number two, find
- 1:22Speaker 5: an area that will likely have a buck show up
- 1:24Speaker 5: when it matters during the season.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So we have our.
- 1:27Speaker 5: Expert panel here again with Bill Winky, Bobby Kendall, Skip Sly,
- 1:31Speaker 5: Steve Hansen, Jeff Sturgist, Don Higgins, Thomas Milsna, and Mark Kenyon,
- 1:36Speaker 5: and we're going to get right into this with Bill
- 1:39Speaker 5: on what he thinks and what to do. If you've
- 1:42Speaker 5: been scouting all year and you haven't found a buck
- 1:44Speaker 5: to hunt, should you panic and what should you do?
- 1:52Speaker 5: All my friends are sending me pictures of giant velvet bucks.
- 1:56Speaker 5: They're telling me all these big deer that they're going
- 1:58Speaker 5: to be able to hunt like a loser. I haven't
- 2:01Speaker 5: found any deer to hunt yet. It's August eighteen, and
- 2:03Speaker 5: I just feel like my season is ruined before it started.
- 2:07Speaker 3: What do I do?
- 2:09Speaker 4: It's still too early to now. I mean, I've seen
- 2:13Speaker 4: the playing field change clear into October.
- 2:18Speaker 3: With respect to the bucks that.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Are in my hunting area, what I always think is
- 2:24Speaker 4: in what I've learned, you know, through the years, is
- 2:28Speaker 4: the bucks that were there last year in the fall
- 2:32Speaker 4: are probably going to be there again this year. If
- 2:35Speaker 4: there weren't any good bucks on the pump Beak last year,
- 2:38Speaker 4: or any really good up and comers, then you maybe
- 2:41Speaker 4: are aleser because you're continue to hunt there and there's
- 2:44Speaker 4: probably not going to be any this year because they
- 2:46Speaker 4: don't just magically appear. They grow and they're not nearly
- 2:51Speaker 4: as transient, is what we think. And that's the other
- 2:56Speaker 4: big I'm saying misconceptions. People think all them be it out,
- 3:00Speaker 4: they're always on the move. They're not always on the move.
- 3:04Speaker 4: I've not seen that, And talk with.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Outfigures over the years.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Some of them there are guys that you know, you've
- 3:09Speaker 4: talked with the past, that you know we would you
- 3:12Speaker 4: know the same people and we've compared notes, and they
- 3:17Speaker 4: aren't moving all over the place. So you've got bucks
- 3:22Speaker 4: in their summer ranges drifted and dispersing into their fall ranges.
- 3:27Speaker 4: If it's been a good area and asked, it's just
- 3:29Speaker 4: a matter of time before those bucks show up again,
- 3:32Speaker 4: because unless they died somehow somewhere else, most of the
- 3:36Speaker 4: bucks use the same fall range year after year, and
- 3:41Speaker 4: you get a certain percentage of them that drop out.
- 3:44Speaker 4: You know that that move a little bit depends on
- 3:46Speaker 4: the size of the property you're hunting. If you're hunting
- 3:48Speaker 4: a smaller property, he might be fringed out on the neighbors.
- 3:51Speaker 4: He might not seem until the rock he's up cruising,
- 3:54Speaker 4: But more than likely, if he was in that area
- 3:56Speaker 4: last year, he's not dead. He's going to be in
- 3:58Speaker 4: that area again this year, but it may not be
- 4:01Speaker 4: could be clear into October before he starts to show up,
- 4:04Speaker 4: but for sure September.
- 4:06Speaker 5: So the question people should be asking is is there
- 4:09Speaker 5: a deer or does the farm I'm hunting this year?
- 4:12Speaker 5: Is there any reason to think that a big one
- 4:14Speaker 5: will show up in the actual hunting season?
- 4:16Speaker 3: And I shouldn't panic right now?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you Again, it really goes back to
- 4:22Speaker 4: what was left there last year, and if it was
- 4:25Speaker 4: good last year, and there was some really good up
- 4:27Speaker 4: and cumbers. There were some nice bucks that you were
- 4:29Speaker 4: hunting that you were be happy to tag. It'll be
- 4:31Speaker 4: good to get in this year. They just may not
- 4:34Speaker 4: be summering there, and that's the thing. You just have
- 4:36Speaker 4: to be patient. But if it wasn't any good last
- 4:39Speaker 4: year and you didn't have the up and combers that
- 4:42Speaker 4: you're saying, oh boy, this's gonna be a great bug
- 4:44Speaker 4: next year, if you didn't have that deer last year,
- 4:46Speaker 4: then there's a pretty good chance that you need to
- 4:48Speaker 4: find someplace else to haunt there.
- 4:51Speaker 3: You guys have it.
- 4:51Speaker 5: That is Bill's perspective, and what I gather from that
- 4:55Speaker 5: is dig back in your brain right now, or go
- 4:57Speaker 5: back and look at last year's pictures.
- 4:59Speaker 3: What may sow up?
- 5:00Speaker 5: And if the answer is nothing, you might want to
- 5:02Speaker 5: look for another spot or develop an alternate game plan.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Next up, we have Bobby Kendall and let's hear what
- 5:08Speaker 5: he has to say about this topic. All my buddies
- 5:11Speaker 5: are sending pictures to all these giant deer, and I'm
- 5:14Speaker 5: feeling like a loser that's getting peck picked, lass and dodgeball.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I can't find a buck the hunt. What do I do?
- 5:19Speaker 5: Is late August, they're done growing. Basically, they're getting ready
- 5:22Speaker 5: to shed their velvet. All time excitement, but I'm not
- 5:26Speaker 5: very optimistic right now, yeap.
- 5:28Speaker 2: So yeah, I think we talked about good hunters and
- 5:32Speaker 2: great hunters, and one of those things I think I
- 5:35Speaker 2: said is great hunters are really good at finding big deer.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So like, if you just have one spot to hunt,
- 5:42Speaker 2: and I understand, I get it, a lot of people
- 5:44Speaker 2: just have one spot to hunt or no spots to haunt.
- 5:49Speaker 2: You can't expect to always just sit around and have
- 5:52Speaker 2: one show up. It's just not the reality. You have
- 5:55Speaker 2: to get good at killing big deer consistently. You have
- 5:58Speaker 2: to get good at finding big deer consistently. So there's
- 6:01Speaker 2: years that I go into the season and I don't
- 6:03Speaker 2: have a whole lot going on, and I just start scrapping,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, I just start grinding, and you know, just
- 6:11Speaker 2: spots I might not hunt in a year, but I
- 6:12Speaker 2: could probably hunt if I call them this and that.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I just start running cameras everywhere.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You just have to get spend more of your efforts
- 6:19Speaker 2: finding other places than trying to uh make make one magically.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Appear, because it just it doesn't really work.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Like that, and I wish I had a better answer
- 6:32Speaker 2: than that, but you got to get really good at
- 6:33Speaker 2: finding them and casting a big net. I think it's
- 6:36Speaker 2: somewhat rare to just have bucks or show up. I mean,
- 6:39Speaker 2: certain farms are different in that, but if you're running
- 6:41Speaker 2: your cameras effectively, especially if you're doing some stuff with
- 6:43Speaker 2: food blots and everything, it's it's not very often that
- 6:47Speaker 2: you don't have a deer, or at least know a deer. Nowadays,
- 6:50Speaker 2: know the deer is very Yeah. Another thing is I
- 6:54Speaker 2: think I talked about this before too, like as you're
- 6:58Speaker 2: looking for other places to hunt, so if you have
- 7:00Speaker 2: a hunch that there's one around or whatever, always be
- 7:03Speaker 2: moving the cameras because they're in bachelor groups and they
- 7:09Speaker 2: could be right there. I mean, I'm watching it at
- 7:11Speaker 2: my house right now, Like there's all these fields and
- 7:13Speaker 2: there's one field where all the bucks are, and if
- 7:15Speaker 2: you came and it's one part of the field, they're
- 7:17Speaker 2: in every night. So if your camera's on the other
- 7:18Speaker 2: side of the field, you're missing them and you're like,
- 7:21Speaker 2: I don't have any dear to hunt. But if it's
- 7:23Speaker 2: on the other side of the field, you're like, I
- 7:25Speaker 2: got a big one to hunt, So always moving your cameras,
- 7:29Speaker 2: shuffling them even if it's not not very far, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: at the same time working on your dame for trying
- 7:39Speaker 2: to find new places to hunt.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Bobby's advice is super real and tangible for anyone that
- 7:44Speaker 5: is counting on luck.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And also if.
- 7:47Speaker 5: You're feeling like, hey, this isn't likely going to happen,
- 7:49Speaker 5: you have time to go out and look and try
- 7:52Speaker 5: to find something that you don't know anything about and
- 7:54Speaker 5: start learning and start preparing a plan B or C
- 7:57Speaker 5: or D. Next up, we have gips Lide. Let's keep
- 8:01Speaker 5: the episode moving. Ride along, and let's hear what Skip
- 8:03Speaker 5: p hass to say. All my friends are sending me
- 8:05Speaker 5: pictures of giant bucks that they have on camera, big
- 8:09Speaker 5: velvet bucks. They're all excited. I'm sitting over here. I
- 8:11Speaker 5: feel like a loser. I've had my cameras up, I
- 8:14Speaker 5: just can't find a buck to hunt.
- 8:16Speaker 3: What do I do?
- 8:18Speaker 7: One we need to understand that a lot of these
- 8:21Speaker 7: bucks aren't in their their fall range yet, so a
- 8:24Speaker 7: lot can change so and a lot of these guys
- 8:28Speaker 7: will be really excited, like I'm the guy with all
- 8:31Speaker 7: these giant bucks on camera, and I've got all these
- 8:33Speaker 7: soybeans or whatever. And then those same guys that think
- 8:38Speaker 7: they're doing really great October or August nineteenth, it comes
- 8:41Speaker 7: to like September nineteenth and like those bucks are gone
- 8:46Speaker 7: or October one, they're gone now. And then the guy
- 8:49Speaker 7: that might be like I don't have anything, Alsen's like, hey,
- 8:53Speaker 7: I actually pick some bucks up, So that actually doesn't
- 8:56Speaker 7: make me nervous. So what I would say if I
- 9:01Speaker 7: don't have giants on camera, like my buddies are all
- 9:04Speaker 7: bragging they do, and it's August nineteenth, I'm setting my
- 9:08Speaker 7: farm up or the places I can hunt to be.
- 9:11Speaker 7: You know, if I can do anything for habitat, making
- 9:13Speaker 7: them thicker, making them you know, not not a lot
- 9:18Speaker 7: of intrusion, making them good sanctuaries for the deer where
- 9:22Speaker 7: they feel safe, and that can be done through habitat,
- 9:24Speaker 7: and it can be done just through pressure. But if
- 9:26Speaker 7: you have desirable thick cover, that's when I see a
- 9:30Speaker 7: lot of transitions like whoa, they came off the beans
- 9:33Speaker 7: or things start thinning out. You know, Well that deer
- 9:35Speaker 7: might be living in kind of a cattle pasture area, Well,
- 9:38Speaker 7: those are going to thin out and there'll be no
- 9:40Speaker 7: brows later and a lot of these deer relocate.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So I would try to.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Have as many setups in like thick secluded areas that
- 9:50Speaker 7: have some food that you're like, this is desirable for
- 9:54Speaker 7: a big buck. And if it is, by definition, over
- 9:57Speaker 7: that month maybe two month period is things then out
- 10:00Speaker 7: props come down, white bucks start fighting for dominance. They're
- 10:05Speaker 7: going to get pushed off, and the dynamics will change.
- 10:08Speaker 7: And if you have a farm built to house a
- 10:11Speaker 7: matured a mature buck, there's a good chance that your
- 10:15Speaker 7: dynamics will change, uh in a month. Just get all
- 10:18Speaker 7: those farms prepped ready, get your stands up, get your
- 10:20Speaker 7: setups up, so when those bucks do show up, which
- 10:23Speaker 7: hopefully they do, sometimes maybe they won't, you're ready to go.
- 10:27Speaker 7: And your farm is very low pressure, and then you
- 10:30Speaker 7: you're you're ready to execute any plan if you need,
- 10:32Speaker 7: if you need to, and and a buck shows up
- 10:34Speaker 7: that you want to hunt.
- 10:35Speaker 5: On a let's say like forty or sixty or seventy
- 10:38Speaker 5: acre track, are you are you more excited when you
- 10:41Speaker 5: don't have some bucks on camera in late summer.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Depends on the track.
- 10:48Speaker 7: I want them there in the summer for sure, uh,
- 10:51Speaker 7: and I really hope I don't lose them. And when
- 10:54Speaker 7: I lose them, there's definitely some commonalities on why those
- 10:56Speaker 7: dear leave. In my opinion, what are what are some
- 10:59Speaker 7: of those coming out don't have good thermal cover, don't
- 11:02Speaker 7: have super thick, thick, nasty like guys are like I
- 11:06Speaker 7: don't like cedar trees.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I want to get rid of them all.
- 11:08Speaker 7: Well, I have cedar trees because those bucks are going
- 11:11Speaker 7: to seek that really dense cover out and maybe not
- 11:13Speaker 7: the stuff that's like so tight together you can't walk through,
- 11:16Speaker 7: but like really thick nasty stuff. Those bucks are going
- 11:19Speaker 7: to want to be there. And then you know, if
- 11:22Speaker 7: I had a forty that's like, hey, I got giants
- 11:24Speaker 7: out there, but it's just got you know, a five
- 11:27Speaker 7: acre timber draw. Well, as those beans dry down and
- 11:32Speaker 7: turn yellow, all of a sudden, those bucks will probably vanish.
- 11:35Speaker 7: So that one would be very concerning to me if
- 11:37Speaker 7: I if I didn't have a lot of good thick cover,
- 11:40Speaker 7: I wouldn't panic. I just find the thickest, nastiest cover
- 11:43Speaker 7: that's not not blown up, and as long as you
- 11:46Speaker 7: know you got say a forty acre piece and what
- 11:51Speaker 7: blows a lot of farms up is like, hey, this
- 11:54Speaker 7: forty acre piece is ideal, and all of a sudden
- 11:56Speaker 7: every year the bucks go there, but then the people
- 11:59Speaker 7: screw it up blown back out. Well, if I have
- 12:02Speaker 7: the farm that I make sure that doesn't happen, most
- 12:06Speaker 7: of my neighbors will probably do stupid stuff and push
- 12:09Speaker 7: the deer in there a lot of times, So I
- 12:12Speaker 7: would just keep it. So It's just like if you
- 12:15Speaker 7: build it, they will come, and sometimes they do come,
- 12:18Speaker 7: and sometimes they don't. Just understand that and if they
- 12:20Speaker 7: don't come consistently, there's something wrong with the farm. But
- 12:23Speaker 7: I would just say if you get good at knowing
- 12:27Speaker 7: how to know what a great farm is with like
- 12:30Speaker 7: seclusion safety, good thermal cover, nasty thick bedding cover, and
- 12:35Speaker 7: then you don't blow it out a lot of times
- 12:38Speaker 7: by definition it will you're gonna gain bucks. Is especially
- 12:43Speaker 7: if people are doing stupid stuff around you, or things
- 12:45Speaker 7: are thinning out and I see that all the time,
- 12:48Speaker 7: like the leaves start falling and.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Whoa that that stuff that look.
- 12:52Speaker 7: Kind of thick with cattle in and well that's a
- 12:55Speaker 7: ghost town and all thst deer leave and they'll find
- 12:59Speaker 7: the farm like heres if it's set up right.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Next up we have Steve Hanson, and he does a
- 13:03Speaker 5: ton of work on the farms, and I think his
- 13:05Speaker 5: perspective is a little bit different. I'm not going to
- 13:07Speaker 5: spoil anything, so here we go. This is what Steve
- 13:10Speaker 5: Hanson has to say for the folks that either have
- 13:12Speaker 5: a bunch of bucks or don't have anything, how to
- 13:14Speaker 5: find one and what you should do right now.
- 13:18Speaker 3: It's late summer.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Okay, you've probably had cameras out, you've done some scouting,
- 13:23Speaker 5: you have a few spots right now, you've unt it
- 13:25Speaker 5: in the past.
- 13:26Speaker 3: You can't find a buck, yep.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Now what well, what I would start doing at that point,
- 13:31Speaker 8: depending on when your season opens. If you still have
- 13:35Speaker 8: and you know this, we talked about this one of
- 13:38Speaker 8: the other questions, but if you still have quite a
- 13:40Speaker 8: bit of time before your hunting season opens, I would
- 13:43Speaker 8: invest a ton of time glassing if that and that
- 13:46Speaker 8: that can take two different approaches. One is truly just
- 13:50Speaker 8: glassing where you're sitting in the truck, sitting on a
- 13:52Speaker 8: high point watching something like that. If that's not an
- 13:55Speaker 8: option in your area, maybe set stands for the upcoming
- 14:00Speaker 8: hunting season.
- 14:01Speaker 6: More of observation stands.
- 14:03Speaker 8: You're there, you're hunting, but instead of hunting, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 8: one little tight funnel right outside of a betting area,
- 14:09Speaker 8: get out on an open oak ridge or an oak
- 14:10Speaker 8: flat where you can see a couple hundred yards with
- 14:13Speaker 8: your binoculars through the timber both directions, and you're hunting
- 14:17Speaker 8: and you're in the game with a good solid wind direction.
- 14:19Speaker 8: But you're also in a spot where you can glass
- 14:22Speaker 8: and move and then just be ready to move quickly
- 14:24Speaker 8: once you do identify a target buck. But you have
- 14:26Speaker 8: to kind of pull back from hunt mode and go
- 14:29Speaker 8: into more even if it's a scout slash hunt, a
- 14:32Speaker 8: hanging hunt type thing, just to get a good vantage
- 14:34Speaker 8: point on some other areas.
- 14:35Speaker 6: But you're going to have to.
- 14:36Speaker 8: Cover more country to be able to be able to
- 14:39Speaker 8: try to find one. It's all going to focus on
- 14:41Speaker 8: finding them. And I would probably move my cameras around
- 14:43Speaker 8: quite a bit.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Where would you move them or I guess and this
- 14:46Speaker 5: is you know, this is throughout the summer too, So
- 14:48Speaker 5: are you banking on any sort of summer shift or
- 14:51Speaker 5: bucks changing as velvet is about to shed too?
- 14:54Speaker 6: Yeah, I would.
- 14:55Speaker 8: I would definitely be moving, you know, as you go
- 14:57Speaker 8: through August. We usually if we get a big wind
- 14:59Speaker 8: of enter something will put acorns on the ground. I
- 15:02Speaker 8: would move off the edge of the soybean fields and
- 15:04Speaker 8: stuff the traditional summer spots. I would find you know,
- 15:07Speaker 8: trails and stuff in the betting areas close to where
- 15:10Speaker 8: there is solid mass crops, you know, And I would
- 15:13Speaker 8: focus on white oaks in a lot of area. They're
- 15:15Speaker 8: going to be the earlier of the acorns and they're
- 15:16Speaker 8: far preferred. So I would definitely shift to shift the
- 15:20Speaker 8: cameras to that, and then shift my strategy. Try to
- 15:22Speaker 8: have a two prong approach where you've moved the cameras
- 15:24Speaker 8: to better and newer locations, and then I would also
- 15:27Speaker 8: plan on you know, physically glassing through hunts or through
- 15:31Speaker 8: whatever whatever that takes.
- 15:32Speaker 5: So I would you think twenty years ago and think
- 15:35Speaker 5: of some of the bucks that you've killed over the years,
- 15:38Speaker 5: how often did you have August intel of those deer?
- 15:45Speaker 8: I would say even twenty years ago, we probably had
- 15:49Speaker 8: intel of some kind on all of.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Them in that summertime frame.
- 15:52Speaker 8: Yep, in the summertime frame, either through glassing. We actually
- 15:58Speaker 8: one buck in particular, which was approximately twenty years ago,
- 16:01Speaker 8: I can remember we was a brand new property and
- 16:04Speaker 8: we had a friend in town from out of the area,
- 16:07Speaker 8: and we all divided up in July before a Canadian
- 16:10Speaker 8: fishing trip and jumped up in the stands or in
- 16:12Speaker 8: shooting huts, and he told us he saw this buck
- 16:15Speaker 8: and like the way he described it, like, we're like,
- 16:18Speaker 8: this guy's from back east.
- 16:20Speaker 6: His name, he's a great friend.
- 16:21Speaker 8: His name's Bob, and we're like, hops, probably doesn't know.
- 16:25Speaker 8: He probably saw one hundred and sixty inch ten pointer,
- 16:28Speaker 8: you know, and thought that was that. So we located
- 16:31Speaker 8: that deer through glassing to appease Bob and sort of
- 16:36Speaker 8: ourselves before we the next day, before we left for Canada,
- 16:39Speaker 8: we put some corn out there, put a camera and
- 16:40Speaker 8: these were cameras you had to pull the chip, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 8: all that stuff, and left went on our fishing trip,
- 16:46Speaker 8: came back and there was two bucks there on that camera,
- 16:50Speaker 8: one of which I killed, which was the one that
- 16:52Speaker 8: scored two fourteen. The other one I still think about this.
- 16:56Speaker 8: We never saw the other one again, and he had
- 16:57Speaker 8: to be close to one ninety, maybe because they were
- 17:01Speaker 8: both somewhat equal in that trail camera picture, but that
- 17:04Speaker 8: those were the bucks that Bob had seen, which we
- 17:07Speaker 8: identified through glassing and then moved in and actually got
- 17:12Speaker 8: hard evidence with a picture through specifically moving a camera
- 17:15Speaker 8: over there.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Now, let's get into what Jeff Sturge's perspective is on
- 17:24Speaker 5: the topic. Might be totally different than everyone else here,
- 17:27Speaker 5: let's get into it. I can't find a buck to hunt.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I don't know of one right now based off of
- 17:32Speaker 5: summer intel.
- 17:34Speaker 3: What do I do?
- 17:35Speaker 6: Now, You're probably doing a great job.
- 17:37Speaker 9: The majority of lands that hold the mature and this
- 17:40Speaker 9: isn't like one hundred percent rule, but it's probably ninety.
- 17:43Speaker 9: It's up there, it's high, but the majority of the
- 17:46Speaker 9: box will hold. The lands that hold the best box
- 17:48Speaker 9: here in the summertime do not hold the same box
- 17:50Speaker 9: here in the fall.
- 17:52Speaker 6: And there's nothing magical about it.
- 17:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 17:55Speaker 9: I've been on over fourteen hundred properties to analyze them
- 17:57Speaker 9: for an entire day in twenty one years and twenty
- 18:00Speaker 9: six states, and I see the same.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Thing over and over and over again.
- 18:05Speaker 9: Mature bucks have one habitat requirement during the summertime and
- 18:09Speaker 9: another habitat requirement in the fall.
- 18:12Speaker 6: That habitat merk requirement might go back.
- 18:15Speaker 9: End of winter to spring to what it was during
- 18:17Speaker 9: the summertime, so they have different areas, and even scientific
- 18:22Speaker 9: studies will show that there's often a barbell movement to
- 18:25Speaker 9: mature box where they spend forty percent of their time here,
- 18:28Speaker 9: forty percent of their time here, twenty percent of the
- 18:30Speaker 9: time in between.
- 18:32Speaker 6: Well, if you look at the habitat.
- 18:33Speaker 9: They need during the summertime, they need quality summer food.
- 18:36Speaker 9: So a lot of times if you're seeing big groups
- 18:40Speaker 9: of box, you're probably not hunting giant hardwoods in Kentucky, Pennsylvania,
- 18:44Speaker 9: or up north swamps in the Northern States, it's probably
- 18:48Speaker 9: because they're out in ag areas.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Well.
- 18:49Speaker 9: If they're hitting ag areas or aunt alfalfa soybeans, those
- 18:52Speaker 9: are all gone. Once the alfalfa frost out k October,
- 18:55Speaker 9: it's almost worthless. We're surrounded by hundreds of acres of alfalfa,
- 18:59Speaker 9: and those that doesn't drive the deer herd. In drives
- 19:03Speaker 9: the deer herd in May, June, July, August, especially after
- 19:06Speaker 9: the cuttings. When it comes to October, November, December and beyond,
- 19:10Speaker 9: it does not, and so that summer food that they
- 19:13Speaker 9: craved all summer is gone. So a mature buck is willing.
- 19:18Speaker 9: He's got a home range five times greater than a
- 19:20Speaker 9: doll family group. He's going to find quality food that
- 19:23Speaker 9: is unpressured, and he wants quality fall food in winter
- 19:27Speaker 9: food which is not the same as the summer. Also,
- 19:30Speaker 9: he wants high overstory and shade during the summertime. He
- 19:33Speaker 9: can't crash his velvet antlers to that high stem count hardwood, regen,
- 19:38Speaker 9: and briers that he would prefer to live in during October, November, December, January, February, March.
- 19:43Speaker 9: In fact, he browses there, lives there during the daylight.
- 19:47Speaker 9: He can't live there with his velvet during the summertime.
- 19:50Speaker 9: So not only does his food source change, his cover
- 19:53Speaker 9: sources changed too. So if you're building a property on
- 19:56Speaker 9: private land or fall food plots, not only are you
- 20:00Speaker 9: you're helping your hunt out obviously by positioning those bucks
- 20:02Speaker 9: on your land here in the falling off the summer,
- 20:05Speaker 9: but you're also giving the deer what they need the
- 20:07Speaker 9: most too. They don't need your food during the summertime,
- 20:09Speaker 9: but they desperately need it in the pre.
- 20:11Speaker 6: Winter winter post winter.
- 20:13Speaker 9: So if you're focusing your food efforts in that time,
- 20:15Speaker 9: you're helping the critters and the wildlife and the deer,
- 20:18Speaker 9: and at the same time you're helping your hunt too,
- 20:21Speaker 9: and so that's a good thing. And I can honestly
- 20:25Speaker 9: say that we have about of the two thirds of
- 20:29Speaker 9: the one hundred percent of the box that we expect
- 20:31Speaker 9: to see and target this year. All our target bucks,
- 20:34Speaker 9: we're seeing about a third of them right now. We
- 20:37Speaker 9: identified two of them on a cruise the other night
- 20:39Speaker 9: around the neighborhood and they were about a mile from
- 20:41Speaker 9: the property. In October, November, December, our home range will
- 20:45Speaker 9: be where they live. And I'm not saying this to brag.
- 20:50Speaker 9: My neighbor last year sent me we had shot. I
- 20:54Speaker 9: wounded a buck that was a six year old. Unfortunately,
- 20:57Speaker 9: he is one of the ones we saw in the neighborhood,
- 20:59Speaker 9: which was a really good thing the other night ll beams.
- 21:03Speaker 9: But anyways, we shot two of the other ones, and
- 21:05Speaker 9: my neighbor said, well, that was only bucks we were after, So.
- 21:08Speaker 6: I don't even know if I'm gonna come back to hunt.
- 21:11Speaker 6: I thought he would have he's one hundred acres.
- 21:13Speaker 9: Off the edge of us. I thought he would have
- 21:14Speaker 9: had other mature bucks to shoot. But he positions his
- 21:17Speaker 9: food source and I've talked to him about this, but
- 21:19Speaker 9: he positions his food source so it's right up against
- 21:21Speaker 9: our property. Well, all the bucks that hit his food
- 21:24Speaker 9: live and reside on our property during the daylight. He
- 21:27Speaker 9: sent me a text saying that he hadn't seen anywhere
- 21:30Speaker 9: else but the last three years he sees those bucks
- 21:32Speaker 9: all summer long, and then by late October November, he
- 21:36Speaker 9: doesn't see him anymore, and we shoot him on our land,
- 21:39Speaker 9: And it's because of cover and food source positioning. I'd
- 21:43Speaker 9: rather he actually take his food away from us, develop
- 21:47Speaker 9: his own core betting area. Then he can develop separate
- 21:49Speaker 9: buck movements and for that we get potentially twice as
- 21:54Speaker 9: much or fifty percent more mature bucks in the area
- 21:57Speaker 9: that we could all hunt and enjoy.
- 21:58Speaker 6: So I'd actually rather see that and try to help
- 22:00Speaker 6: them out.
- 22:01Speaker 9: And it's not necessarily it is a competition thing to
- 22:04Speaker 9: some extent, but at the same time, if you help
- 22:07Speaker 9: each other out, and I could think you can build
- 22:09Speaker 9: a better dear overall, that helps out the entire neighborhood.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Over the years, I feel that Jeff has educated a
- 22:15Speaker 5: lot of people on core and non core bucks. And
- 22:17Speaker 5: when you really want to be holding deer and I
- 22:20Speaker 5: think his perspective is extremely relatable. On a smaller parcel.
- 22:24Speaker 5: More likely, you can't hold a bunch of mature bucks
- 22:27Speaker 5: the entire year. They're going to be out in different areas. So,
- 22:30Speaker 5: hearing that from Jeff, if you're sitting in that exact
- 22:33Speaker 5: position right now, you should feel a lot better. Now
- 22:35Speaker 5: let's get into what Don Higgins thinks on this exact topic.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I can't find a buck to hunt now? What keep looking?
- 22:45Speaker 10: I mean bucks that you know in early falls, starting
- 22:49Speaker 10: around September one, when they start shitting velvet bachelor groups
- 22:52Speaker 10: start breaking up, bucks start shifting their ranges, moving from
- 22:56Speaker 10: their summer range to their fall range. I get a
- 23:00Speaker 10: lot of bucks on camera in the fall that I
- 23:02Speaker 10: did not have pictures of in the summer. If you
- 23:06Speaker 10: got a specific goal, no matter what that goal is,
- 23:09Speaker 10: it could be you know, one hundred and forty inches,
- 23:11Speaker 10: or it could be booner. If you haven't found that
- 23:14Speaker 10: buck yet, keep looking. Don't compromise. You know, that's another
- 23:18Speaker 10: thing that will separate good hunters from greade hunters. Great
- 23:22Speaker 10: hunters don't compromise. When they've got a goal, they stick
- 23:24Speaker 10: to that goal no matter how long it takes to
- 23:27Speaker 10: reach it. They keep striving for that goal without compromise,
- 23:30Speaker 10: So don't give up.
- 23:33Speaker 5: How important do you think it is to identify Maybe
- 23:37Speaker 5: a lot of people maybe only have one or two spots.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And so.
- 23:41Speaker 5: For those people, if typically bucks show up in September
- 23:45Speaker 5: or October or November, would you tell them not to
- 23:48Speaker 5: panic and stick the plan?
- 23:49Speaker 2: No?
- 23:50Speaker 10: What I would tell them is, why do you only
- 23:51Speaker 10: have one or those spots? Is your wife telling you
- 23:54Speaker 10: can only hunt here?
- 23:55Speaker 3: There?
- 23:56Speaker 10: Nobody's tied down. It's not like we're kids depending on
- 23:59Speaker 10: our parents to take sut up to the woods and
- 24:00Speaker 10: drop us off. We got a call a free adult man.
- 24:03Speaker 10: Nobody's tying you down to two hunting properties. Get off
- 24:06Speaker 10: your butt and go make something for yourself. Yeah, if
- 24:10Speaker 10: you want to kill giants, there's no excuses.
- 24:14Speaker 5: There's Don's perspective, and I think there's a common theme
- 24:17Speaker 5: that if you've been listening along to each in every
- 24:19Speaker 5: single episode, that a lot of this comes down to
- 24:21Speaker 5: simply effort. All the tactics that are in here, I
- 24:24Speaker 5: understand they don't sound groundbreaking, but it comes down to
- 24:27Speaker 5: effort and your ability to spread out your options to
- 24:31Speaker 5: up your success and there's still time to do that,
- 24:34Speaker 5: and hopefully don just encourage you to consider that before
- 24:37Speaker 5: the season officially kicks off. And now we have Thomas
- 24:41Speaker 5: Milsna and his perspective on not having a buck to hunt,
- 24:45Speaker 5: or not knowing eyone, or sitting there with no intel
- 24:48Speaker 5: what to do? And should you panic? All of my
- 24:51Speaker 5: friends are sending me giant velvet bucks. They already have
- 24:54Speaker 5: a rolodex of Target bucks, and I'm sitting here feeling
- 24:58Speaker 5: like a loser on a single buck yet hunt?
- 25:02Speaker 3: What do I do? And do I panic? No?
- 25:06Speaker 1: No, don't panic. That's the worst thing you can do.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Right early in the season like this, I never get
- 25:12Speaker 1: worried now. I always go back and lean on that
- 25:15Speaker 1: historical data.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:17Speaker 1: So again, most of the time, if I'm hunting a
- 25:19Speaker 1: deer that's five or six years page, I've got a
- 25:22Speaker 1: year or two of history with him at least. So
- 25:24Speaker 1: if I go back and I'm if I was anticipating
- 25:29Speaker 1: that this buck was going to be around early season
- 25:31Speaker 1: and I can't find him in the summertime, then I
- 25:33Speaker 1: might be a little bit more worried. But even then
- 25:35Speaker 1: I don't worry too much because earlier in the season
- 25:38Speaker 1: there's a lot more cover, there's a lot more food.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Deer move a lot less, plain and simple. So if
- 25:43Speaker 1: he's just not getting pushed around, he's happy where he is.
- 25:47Speaker 1: As fall progresses, he's going to shift a little bit, right,
- 25:49Speaker 1: So that's the biggest thing to think about. If you
- 25:51Speaker 1: were chasing a buck last year or watching a target
- 25:54Speaker 1: buck last year, potential target buck an up and comer,
- 25:57Speaker 1: and now he's on your target list this year. If
- 25:59Speaker 1: you were watching him last year and you were seeing
- 26:01Speaker 1: him on your property in the end of October, then
- 26:03Speaker 1: don't be alarmed if you don't see him in August. Right,
- 26:05Speaker 1: it's a completely different timeframe. If you were seeing him
- 26:09Speaker 1: in October last year and then October rolls around this
- 26:12Speaker 1: year and you're still not seeing him, then I would
- 26:14Speaker 1: worry a little bit, and maybe I would just start wondering, like,
- 26:17Speaker 1: did he get killed in his early season range by
- 26:20Speaker 1: some other hunter that was anticipating him being there early
- 26:23Speaker 1: in the season. Right, Every property is different, every buck
- 26:26Speaker 1: is different. The best thing you can do is track
- 26:29Speaker 1: each buck individually, you know, focus on those deer on
- 26:32Speaker 1: their target deer, maintain or collect information that you can
- 26:37Speaker 1: log for that historic data and really really try to
- 26:42Speaker 1: dial in the areas of your property and what the
- 26:45Speaker 1: habitat has to offer them. You know, that's like the
- 26:48Speaker 1: next level of it. Right after anticipating where deer are
- 26:51Speaker 1: going to be, Well, ask the question why are they there?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Is there more cover based on the time of the year,
- 26:56Speaker 1: Is there more food based on the time of the year.
- 26:58Speaker 1: You know, all those things go hand in hand with
- 27:00Speaker 1: the pressure element that we face all the time. So
- 27:03Speaker 1: don't panic if it's summertime, unless that book is a
- 27:06Speaker 1: buck that you normally see there in the summer, and
- 27:09Speaker 1: then he's normally their early season, you're trying to hunt him.
- 27:11Speaker 6: If you normally see him later.
- 27:12Speaker 1: In the fall and he's not there in the summer,
- 27:15Speaker 1: they're going to shift their home range as always. You
- 27:17Speaker 1: know that buck might shift miles or he might shift
- 27:19Speaker 1: over the ridge. Every situation is a little bit different.
- 27:22Speaker 5: That's been not at least we have Mark Nyan to close
- 27:24Speaker 5: out this episode and he's going to tell you about
- 27:27Speaker 5: his perspective on this topic for right now and also
- 27:30Speaker 5: later in the season.
- 27:31Speaker 3: So here we go.
- 27:32Speaker 5: We're going to close this out strong with Mark Kenyan.
- 27:36Speaker 5: All right, all my friends, they are sending me pictures
- 27:39Speaker 5: of a big deer. They're saying, this is going to
- 27:41Speaker 5: be my best year yet, and I'm sitting here and
- 27:44Speaker 5: I feel like a lame o. I haven't found any
- 27:46Speaker 5: deer yet. I have my cameras up. I'm starting to
- 27:49Speaker 5: panic because i just want to find a deer that
- 27:51Speaker 5: I'll be excited to hunt.
- 27:53Speaker 3: What do you do if you're sitting in that position
- 27:55Speaker 3: right now? Yeah, well, hear me.
- 27:58Speaker 11: It does depend on when somebody's listening to this right now.
- 28:01Speaker 11: If if somebody's listening to this right now in August,
- 28:04Speaker 11: you know, late summer, that's one thing. If someone were
- 28:07Speaker 11: to be listening to this in season, it's another. I'll
- 28:11Speaker 11: give both answers to help someone out in either situation.
- 28:14Speaker 11: If it's in the summer and they don't have a buck,
- 28:16Speaker 11: they're exciting to hunt, it's understandable to be disappointed. And
- 28:20Speaker 11: I've had a couple of years or that that's the case.
- 28:22Speaker 11: I'm going this's a bummer, but I'm not in panic mode.
- 28:27Speaker 11: So much changes from the end of summer until hunting
- 28:30Speaker 11: season arrives. There's there's several major shifts. Right There's what
- 28:35Speaker 11: a lot of us called the September shift. So when
- 28:37Speaker 11: bucks lose their velvet, you get a reshuffling of the deck.
- 28:40Speaker 11: I've always found like somewhere on like thirty percent, give
- 28:43Speaker 11: or take, something like that shifts to a slightly different range.
- 28:46Speaker 11: So there's gonna be new bucks coming in, there's gonna
- 28:48Speaker 11: be some bucks leaving. So I'm not you know, what's
- 28:51Speaker 11: there in August or July is oftentimes different than what's
- 28:54Speaker 11: going to be there in October when I start out,
- 28:56Speaker 11: So right out the gate, I know that's going to happen,
- 28:59Speaker 11: So I'm not worried yet. Number Two, As that rut
- 29:03Speaker 11: starts getting closer and closer, you start getting more movement,
- 29:06Speaker 11: more deer moving in. I have some properties that simply
- 29:09Speaker 11: don't have a lot of bucks until the rut, Like
- 29:11Speaker 11: one farm that I hunt just I know because of
- 29:14Speaker 11: the habitat type that's there, it's not a summer place.
- 29:18Speaker 11: But come late October, all of a sudden, bucks start
- 29:20Speaker 11: trolling through. So you can sometimes learn the DNA of
- 29:23Speaker 11: your farm or the DNA of your area and just
- 29:26Speaker 11: come to understand that some places just aren't going to
- 29:29Speaker 11: have that. So hopefully that's something you've come to learn
- 29:31Speaker 11: about your places, and you know, whether or not that's
- 29:33Speaker 11: the case. But if you're in an area where it
- 29:36Speaker 11: historically is always held deer in the summer, and you
- 29:40Speaker 11: know that usually the deer that show up in the
- 29:41Speaker 11: summer are also the deer that are there in the fall.
- 29:43Speaker 11: There's places like that too, And if it's a given
- 29:45Speaker 11: year that's not the case, and like holl of Smokes,
- 29:48Speaker 11: there's no mature bucks this year, then I've got some worries.
- 29:51Speaker 11: Now I'm thinking, like, what's going on? Why is this
- 29:53Speaker 11: year so different than every other year? Is there EHD
- 29:58Speaker 11: has something else going on on that I'm you know,
- 30:01Speaker 11: that's going to mess me up for the whole year.
- 30:03Speaker 11: If I'm in that situation and I have real concerns
- 30:06Speaker 11: because of how different this is in the past, while
- 30:08Speaker 11: I still know that things still could change, I would
- 30:13Speaker 11: at this point be thinking, Okay, how do I diversify? Right, Like,
- 30:16Speaker 11: the key to safe investing is a diversified portfolio, and
- 30:20Speaker 11: I think that diversified to your portfolio is always good.
- 30:23Speaker 11: I did too, So this is something that I'm every
- 30:26Speaker 11: year of trying to get a little better at this,
- 30:28Speaker 11: and I'm trying to provide myself this kind of safety net.
- 30:33Speaker 3: But that is having.
- 30:34Speaker 11: Multiple options, so never being dependent on just one spot
- 30:37Speaker 11: or just one property or one square mile or one zone.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 30:40Speaker 11: It is having as many different areas as possible, so
- 30:44Speaker 11: you don't find yourself in a position with nothing to
- 30:47Speaker 11: hunt or nothing you're excited about. You've always got an
- 30:50Speaker 11: option B, an option C, another zone, another area, another,
- 30:53Speaker 11: even if it's just public land, and you're like, hey,
- 30:56Speaker 11: if my core spot that I've always hunted the past
- 30:58Speaker 11: doesn't have one, at least I I know three or
- 31:01Speaker 11: four other public land spots that I can go dive into,
- 31:04Speaker 11: learn more about, and find something fun to do over there.
- 31:06Speaker 11: I think that's a great thing to have in mind.
- 31:09Speaker 11: I've had some years where deer that I think should
- 31:12Speaker 11: be around aren't around, and I was so excited about
- 31:16Speaker 11: them that I wanted to try to confirm like life
- 31:18Speaker 11: or death, or try to refine them or find something else.
- 31:21Speaker 11: So that's why I start casting nets. So I start
- 31:23Speaker 11: driving around summer evenings and glassing fields and the surrounding neighborhoods,
- 31:27Speaker 11: like imagine like growing concentric circles around where they used
- 31:30Speaker 11: to be and trying to find that deer again or
- 31:33Speaker 11: find another deer. I'm really excited about and then start
- 31:36Speaker 11: trying to get new access, so you're trying to find
- 31:38Speaker 11: that deer and then start knocking on doors around them
- 31:40Speaker 11: and see if you can get access to where a
- 31:42Speaker 11: deer you are excited hunt is now, so that if
- 31:45Speaker 11: it doesn't show back up on your place in October
- 31:47Speaker 11: or November, you have those options. So I think those
- 31:51Speaker 11: are a couple different ways of going about this. There's
- 31:53Speaker 11: the sit back and relax and feel confident that something's
- 31:56Speaker 11: going to happen because you have other options, or because
- 31:59Speaker 11: you know that things do circle around, or I think
- 32:02Speaker 11: there's to seek it out and go find other opportunities.
- 32:05Speaker 11: And I think, you know, some of the conversations that
- 32:07Speaker 11: we've had are around like what separates good from grape
- 32:10Speaker 11: or what separates you know, those who are consistently killing.
- 32:14Speaker 3: A deer versus like every year killed one.
- 32:15Speaker 11: And I think like the ones who always have opportunities
- 32:19Speaker 11: are typically the ones who don't just kick back and
- 32:21Speaker 11: say whatever. They're the ones that, hey, if it's not happening,
- 32:24Speaker 11: I'm gonna make it happen somewhere else or in some
- 32:27Speaker 11: other way. And so I think that's when it comes
- 32:29Speaker 11: down to, like do you have the interest and the
- 32:31Speaker 11: willingness to seek them out. In that case, in season,
- 32:36Speaker 11: if I don't have a buck to hunt, it's much
- 32:39Speaker 11: more of that. So while like the August thing, I
- 32:42Speaker 11: might be a little bit more like, Okay, it's probably
- 32:44Speaker 11: gonna happen. Still hopefully I'm going a diversified position already,
- 32:48Speaker 11: but I'm probably not panicked. But if it's in October
- 32:51Speaker 11: or November it's still there's nothing to hunt, then it's like, okay,
- 32:56Speaker 11: it's go time. And if it's go time and there's
- 32:59Speaker 11: nothing to hunt, and it's like all right, I have
- 33:01Speaker 11: to go seek it out elsewhere unless I have different goals,
- 33:04Speaker 11: like if your goals aren't around, I have to kill
- 33:07Speaker 11: a big drive buck. And instead of like, hey, I
- 33:08Speaker 11: want to spend time get my kids out hunting, I
- 33:10Speaker 11: want to kill some doves and whatever comes through, whatever
- 33:13Speaker 11: you know, whatever happens to be here is fine.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Like if that's what make you happy and great, enjoy it,
- 33:18Speaker 3: no worries.
- 33:19Speaker 11: But if you are like dedicated to killing a five
- 33:21Speaker 11: year old or dedicated to killing a certain caliber deer,
- 33:26Speaker 11: you can't kill it if it's not there. And so
- 33:29Speaker 11: in that case it's time to pound wars. It's time
- 33:32Speaker 11: to explore public land. Hopefully you have a diversified portfolio
- 33:35Speaker 11: of access. It's time to check all those other places out.
- 33:39Speaker 11: Oh and then here's another really important thing to know.
- 33:43Speaker 11: I've also been in this position where I thought I
- 33:45Speaker 11: didn't have anything to hunt because my cameras weren't showing it,
- 33:49Speaker 11: and I made the mistake of assuming that was like
- 33:51Speaker 11: gospel truth property. Yeah, it's important not to live and
- 33:55Speaker 11: die by your cameras, because I've also thought, oh, this
- 33:58Speaker 11: dear's gone, and then I didn't hunt for a while,
- 34:01Speaker 11: but then finally, all right, I better go out there,
- 34:03Speaker 11: and so I.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Do go hunt in the band. There he is.
- 34:05Speaker 11: He's just been avoiding the cameras the whole time too.
- 34:08Speaker 11: So make sure that you are actually confirming presence of
- 34:11Speaker 11: the deer with your eyes yourself, rather than depending on
- 34:15Speaker 11: our technology. These tools are great, but do not be
- 34:18Speaker 11: too dependent on them, because there's a whole lot slipping
- 34:21Speaker 11: by that we never see. And if you're not out
- 34:23Speaker 11: there in the field hunting or scouting and doing it
- 34:26Speaker 11: yourself old fashioned woodsmanship and hunting. If you're not doing that,
- 34:30Speaker 11: you are not in a position to make a defining
- 34:33Speaker 11: decision of whether or not there's a buck to hunt
- 34:35Speaker 11: or not.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a really healthy outlook.
- 34:39Speaker 5: And that was really the general consensus across the board
- 34:44Speaker 5: of hey, don't panic, and there is a shift that
- 34:47Speaker 5: is very real and hopefully, if you have a good farm,
- 34:49Speaker 5: your habitat's only going to get better throughout the leading
- 34:53Speaker 5: up the season and during the actual season when you'll
- 34:55Speaker 5: have an opportunity to hunt them. And that was the
- 34:58Speaker 5: general consensus. The other general consensus was keep looking, like,
- 35:02Speaker 5: just don't totally bank on one will show up, because
- 35:05Speaker 5: one shows up every single year, and go out and
- 35:08Speaker 5: maybe get an option, you know, two, three, four, five,
- 35:11Speaker 5: sixty seven.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 35:12Speaker 3: You can never have too many options.
- 35:14Speaker 5: You really can't. And I think that it's a super
- 35:18Speaker 5: exciting time. And if you have one on camera, maybe
- 35:21Speaker 5: start looking at, Okay, where may he shift and anticipate
- 35:24Speaker 5: that maybe you can knock on a door and get permission,
- 35:27Speaker 5: or maybe the farm's large enough anything, I think he's
- 35:29Speaker 5: going to shift over to this direction. And maybe you
- 35:31Speaker 5: have enough data and intel over the years where you
- 35:34Speaker 5: feel like you're you're.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Just waiting for everything to unfold. And that's an exciting
- 35:38Speaker 3: place to be.
- 35:39Speaker 5: Next week, we're diving into an exciting question and dilemma
- 35:45Speaker 5: to where you're just got access to something brand new.
- 35:48Speaker 5: It's late August, it's kind of late to do. It's
- 35:51Speaker 5: too late to do a spring food plot. It may
- 35:53Speaker 5: or may not be too late to do some major projects.
- 35:56Speaker 5: Where you go season is right around the corner, and
- 35:59Speaker 5: that'll be next week.
- 36:01Speaker 3: There, you guys have it.
- 36:01Speaker 5: I hope you enjoyed this episode and what I gathered
- 36:05Speaker 5: from this expert panel on the one topic that we
- 36:09Speaker 5: all get a little wound up about.
- 36:11Speaker 3: If you're sitting here with no.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Deer on the farm that you own, you manage, you lease,
- 36:16Speaker 5: you pay really close attention to. The thesis is do
- 36:20Speaker 5: not panic, but think about what deer may show up
- 36:23Speaker 5: from last year. That's probably number one. Number two, do
- 36:27Speaker 5: you have good fall habitat? And if the answer is no,
- 36:30Speaker 5: you still have time to get an alternate plan and
- 36:34Speaker 5: make sure that you're not counting on luck, you're not
- 36:37Speaker 5: magically anticipating a big deer to show up. And ultimately,
- 36:41Speaker 5: if you have a bunch of bucks on camera right
- 36:44Speaker 5: now and you're feeling awesome, but once again, the fall
- 36:46Speaker 5: habitat is not going to be ideal. I wouldn't be
- 36:49Speaker 5: feeling as confident and I've done I've been on both
- 36:51Speaker 5: ends of this perspective throughout the years, and I get
- 36:54Speaker 5: a lot less nervous when I don't have Summer Bucks
- 36:57Speaker 5: on camera. But I do know the fall habitat is solid.
- 37:00Speaker 5: So I hope you guys enjoyed this. Next week, we're
- 37:03Speaker 5: diving into a different can of worms and those that
- 37:07Speaker 5: just got a new farm, or just got a new lease,
- 37:11Speaker 5: or just knocked on the door and is basically starting
- 37:14Speaker 5: a ground zero with the season right around the corner.
- 37:16Speaker 5: We're gonna share what all these folks would do before
- 37:20Speaker 5: the season and what they wouldn't do, which may be
- 37:23Speaker 5: more important.
- 37:24Speaker 3: So until then, we'll see you next time. See you
