- 0:10Speaker 1: Bruce Feldman from The Athletic is joining us right now.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And I'm going to start in a ridiculous place here,
- 0:16Speaker 1: but I have to ask this question. Because if there
- 0:18Speaker 1: is one, I have a feeling I know some of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the people who are in this group chat. So I
- 0:22Speaker 1: am wondering, Bruce, is there a group chat where former
- 0:26Speaker 1: Miami Hurricane alums They get together and they have talking points.
- 0:31Speaker 1: They share talking points with one another. And if so,
- 0:34Speaker 1: is Bear and Mike Ryan in that group chat?
- 0:38Speaker 2: I've only heard about this group. I wouldn't be surprised
- 0:41Speaker 2: if there's somebody in there who bets on Major League
- 0:45Speaker 2: Baseball games that aren't in the pennant race or that
- 0:49Speaker 2: somebody's in there with a very stylish mustache who's.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Not become a big TV star. That was a great answer.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Thank you for giving it to us.
- 1:00Speaker 1: What has surprised you the most about this college football
- 1:03Speaker 1: season so far, Bruce?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Good question. You know, I got to admit that Oregon
- 1:11Speaker 2: has looked really shaky, and I did not expect that.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14Speaker 2: They got beat at Oklahoma State. They really got beat
- 1:16Speaker 2: down by the Cowboys. And, you know, Oklahoma State was
- 1:21Speaker 2: coming off a bad loss to Tulsa, and they took
- 1:24Speaker 2: it to them, and now they play USC. it's a,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it's kind of feels like a loser leaves town match,
- 1:31Speaker 2: which is kind of to evoke the old, like pro
- 1:33Speaker 2: wrestling kind of vibe, just because everybody's like, all right, Lincoln,
- 1:37Speaker 2: stop making excuses. Stop giving explanations, just win a game,
- 1:41Speaker 2: win a big game. And so there's that, I think the,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, that part of the Oregon part, if they
- 1:46Speaker 2: somehow start out with two losses and it doesn't matter
- 1:50Speaker 2: that you beat Portland state 98 to nothing, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 2: you got to, It felt like this was a year where,
- 1:56Speaker 2: all right, does Oregon finally win a national title? I
- 2:00Speaker 2: feel like that was a big– right now it's a
- 2:03Speaker 2: big headliner in terms of everything else. But it's still
- 2:08Speaker 2: really early in the season. I mean, honestly, last year
- 2:12Speaker 2: I thought Clemson was going to be a lot better.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I'm surprised at how much they have struggled. I know
- 2:17Speaker 2: they came back to win and beat North Carolina.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But it's just like, man, that program just seems to
- 2:22Speaker 2: be sinking back to mediocrity pretty fast.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Bruce, on the topic of North Carolina, I'm a North
- 2:27Speaker 5: Carolina grad. The Belichick tenure has been largely a disappointment
- 2:31Speaker 5: that's been marked by scandal more recently. What would you
- 2:34Speaker 5: say the percentage chance is that he's North Carolina's coach
- 2:38Speaker 5: this time next year?
- 2:39Speaker 4: 40%.
- 2:42Speaker 5: Too high for my liking.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 2: You know, I think there's a better chance that he's
- 2:47Speaker 2: not back.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Like, as you know, being a North Carolina guy, like
- 2:51Speaker 2: when Mack Brown was there in the second time, they
- 2:54Speaker 2: were not great, but they were not terrible. They were
- 2:57Speaker 2: terrible last year. And because of the people Bill Belichick
- 3:02Speaker 2: put in place, most notably his right-hand guy, Mike Lombardi
- 3:06Speaker 2: as the GM, the highest paid GM in college football,
- 3:10Speaker 2: they became a laughingstock, right? And even when they won
- 3:13Speaker 2: two games, you know, back when Larry Fedora was there,
- 3:17Speaker 2: it was like it didn't feel the same way just
- 3:19Speaker 2: because now all of a sudden you're taking the greatest
- 3:21Speaker 2: coach in the history of the NFL, never been in college,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you're sticking him in there at 70-something, and you just
- 3:27Speaker 2: had a lot of drama. And it feels now like
- 3:30Speaker 2: they're a much more competent operation. Obviously, they had a
- 3:33Speaker 2: nice win over TCU in Ireland. You know, they let
- 3:37Speaker 2: one get away last week at Clemson, but it feels
- 3:39Speaker 2: like they're like, If you told me they went 6-6
- 3:42Speaker 2: and went to a bowl game, I'd be like, that
- 3:44Speaker 2: doesn't surprise me. But again, you're North Carolina. You're paying
- 3:48Speaker 2: him twice as much as you paid Mack Brown for
- 3:50Speaker 2: lesser results. And then you have to keep in mind,
- 3:53Speaker 2: in this investigation, whatever happened in the personnel department that
- 3:59Speaker 2: they looked into, not just with Lombardi, with people that
- 4:02Speaker 2: Lombardi brought in, Bill Belichick's responsible for those decisions, whether
- 4:07Speaker 2: he knew what was going on or should have known
- 4:11Speaker 2: what was going on.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Let's continue down that path. I like this. Percentage chance.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Percentage chance Mike Norvell is back at Florida State next year.
- 4:18Speaker 4: 12.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I love that you're giving yes. This is fantastic. 12%
- 4:25Speaker 3: on Norvell, huh?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's optimistic. I mean, if you watch them play,
- 4:31Speaker 2: You know, there'll be some decent things in there, but
- 4:33Speaker 2: it's like it's Florida State. We're pretty far down the
- 4:35Speaker 2: road with Mike Norvell. The only reason why I would
- 4:38Speaker 2: say it's as high as it is, and again, it's
- 4:40Speaker 2: not even in the teens, is it's a lot of money. And,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, Florida State isn't Texas A & M where
- 4:48Speaker 2: they have oil, you know, billionaires, you know, tripping over
- 4:52Speaker 2: themselves around. You know, it's still Florida State. And he's,
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know, he's not a terrible coach. It wasn't that
- 4:58Speaker 2: long ago where, like, Alabama was looking at him and
- 5:02Speaker 2: Kalen DeBoer as the guys they were considering to think
- 5:06Speaker 2: they could, he could be the guy to replace Nick Saban.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But it's just kind of falling apart. It doesn't feel
- 5:11Speaker 2: like there's much alignment. It doesn't feel like there's much buy-in.
- 5:14Speaker 2: They do have some talent in spots, but man, they
- 5:17Speaker 2: look really bad on defense and it just feels like
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's regressing and they're staring at that, you know, a
- 5:24Speaker 2: three and four, possibly two and five start, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and then a bye week. Coming off of Miami, maybe
- 5:30Speaker 2: they hit the reset button and go, all right, what's
- 5:33Speaker 2: our plan B to get us kind of back? Because
- 5:36Speaker 2: as you guys know, it's different than when Jimbo was rolling.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Somebody who's connected to Florida State had pointed out a
- 5:46Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago. He was like, when they had
- 5:49Speaker 2: it going, Al Golden was the head coach at Miami.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Jimbo could get whatever he wanted out of South Florida.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Now you've got a recruiting maniac who's at Miami. And
- 6:00Speaker 2: by the way, John Summerall is at Florida, and he's
- 6:03Speaker 2: way more competent and it feels like they're on the
- 6:06Speaker 2: right track. So now all of a sudden, you're third.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You're not first. And to have a coach on the
- 6:13Speaker 2: hot seat for that long, all right, what's the exit
- 6:15Speaker 2: strategy and where are you going with it?
- 6:17Speaker 5: Was that recruiting psycho Mike Ryan?
- 6:20Speaker 3: He's not going to answer. He's just going to smile.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I don't know who you're talking about.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Miami is working the portal better than any program in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the country.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Is that fair? Is it fair to say that?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the Mensa thing and the Cooper Bar-Kate. The other
- 6:37Speaker 2: thing that they're doing is some teams are really good
- 6:39Speaker 2: in the portal and some teams are pretty good at
- 6:44Speaker 2: the high school recruiting. you know, Cristobal and the Miami
- 6:47Speaker 2: operation are a plus on both of those.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Right. If you're seeing the offensive line, you're seeing the
- 6:52Speaker 2: guys in the trenches. I don't want to just say
- 6:53Speaker 2: that just the offensive lineman, cause it's defensive guys, but
- 6:56Speaker 2: then you're seeing like, you know, like Malachi Tony's found gold.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know, I, I don't know why he was only
- 7:02Speaker 2: a three star, but you know, you bring him, him,
- 7:06Speaker 2: him in and he's a tone setter. And then you
- 7:08Speaker 2: see other parts of the, of, um, on the roster
- 7:11Speaker 2: where they have some of those guys. And I think
- 7:14Speaker 2: that's the part where, okay, I don't know why it
- 7:17Speaker 2: took this long for Miami to get this up to
- 7:20Speaker 2: speed with it, but it's like as far as Miami goes,
- 7:24Speaker 2: they seem to have like the ideal coach. I don't
- 7:26Speaker 2: want to say the perfect coach, but the ideal coach
- 7:28Speaker 2: for this NIL era because it's really hard because of
- 7:34Speaker 2: all the shuffling that goes on with rosters to get
- 7:37Speaker 2: continuity in the trenches, especially on the O-line. Well, you
- 7:40Speaker 2: got a guy who's elite at evaluating O-line and he's
- 7:44Speaker 2: got such a relationship with his O-line guy that they're
- 7:47Speaker 2: able to really put it together. It doesn't guarantee that
- 7:50Speaker 2: they're going to win national championships now, but it definitely
- 7:53Speaker 2: gives them a way better chance to be in the discussion.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And if you're in the discussion and in that, then
- 7:58Speaker 2: all of a sudden I feel like it breeds into
- 8:01Speaker 2: something because, you know, again, you guys know this well
- 8:03Speaker 2: being down there, like All of a sudden, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and part of it is Malachi Toney, a big part
- 8:08Speaker 2: of it. But I think Miami became very cool in
- 8:11Speaker 2: the last, I don't know, you know, 12 months.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Maybe not even 12 months. And I think now all
- 8:16Speaker 2: of a sudden it doesn't take that much for you
- 8:19Speaker 2: to light that fuse. And it's definitely lit now.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Bruce, back to FSU for a second. I take pride
- 8:25Speaker 5: in 2026 not getting fooled by reports, fake reports on
- 8:28Speaker 5: the Internet. Did I get fooled by a report by
- 8:31Speaker 5: you that Jimbo Fisher really wants the FSU job and
- 8:34Speaker 5: FSU brass is looking into it?
- 8:37Speaker 2: I think that Jimbo Fisher has definite interest. That's what
- 8:40Speaker 2: I'm told. And on the Florida State side, I don't
- 8:44Speaker 2: know what Florida State is going to do financially when
- 8:48Speaker 2: they start kicking the tires on.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Let's say, and this is a guy you guys know
- 8:52Speaker 2: well and I know well too, and he's a good
- 8:54Speaker 2: coach and he has ties to Florida State, and that's
- 8:57Speaker 2: Manny Diaz. Manny Diaz is doing a really good job
- 8:59Speaker 2: at Duke. If you want, if you, if you decide
- 9:02Speaker 2: Manny Diaz is your best option, you know, how much
- 9:05Speaker 2: is that going to cost you to get rid of
- 9:07Speaker 2: Norvell at 50 million, get, you know, and then all
- 9:10Speaker 2: of a sudden, you know, if Manny has some buyout
- 9:13Speaker 2: and bring him in and go forward, and then all
- 9:15Speaker 2: of a sudden you have to factor in, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 2: clearly they were not, you know, from what I'm told,
- 9:20Speaker 2: they were closer to USF than UM or UF when
- 9:23Speaker 2: it came to their portal spending this past off season. So,
- 9:28Speaker 2: What is the economics of that? And I think the
- 9:30Speaker 2: part that I would imagine is going to be tough
- 9:33Speaker 2: for them is on Jimbo. Can people can he talk
- 9:38Speaker 2: his way into the job? Right. Right. Can he do
- 9:41Speaker 2: that where it's like, OK, on some sense, financially, it
- 9:44Speaker 2: makes sense. But does it really make sense to say
- 9:47Speaker 2: because we've seen we've seen some version of this where
- 9:51Speaker 2: it's whether Bobby Petrino comes back to Louisville and it
- 9:54Speaker 2: worked for a little while until it didn't. or, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 2: Mack Brown wasn't a disaster at North Carolina um you
- 10:00Speaker 2: know Rich Rod is you know Rich Rod to me
- 10:03Speaker 2: is a little different than some of these other guys
- 10:05Speaker 2: you know but because Rich Rod what he's doing at
- 10:08Speaker 2: West Virginia now let's you know he's off to a
- 10:10Speaker 2: good start this year doesn't mean he's going to go
- 10:12Speaker 2: you know 10 and 2 but I think that there's
- 10:14Speaker 2: some of that where you can see a little bit
- 10:17Speaker 2: of momentum. I don't know how, you know, I think
- 10:19Speaker 2: it's a tough sell on fans, but do you, if
- 10:23Speaker 2: you're a Florida state, do you look and go, okay,
- 10:25Speaker 2: maybe we can bring in Glenn Schumann, who's an unproven
- 10:28Speaker 2: head coach, but has done a good job as Kirby's
- 10:30Speaker 2: defensive coordinator. You know, again, I don't know if you
- 10:33Speaker 2: can sell them on, hey, Kenny Dillingham's going to come
- 10:36Speaker 2: down here. You also don't know what jobs are coming
- 10:38Speaker 2: open that are competing with you. That's, you know, last year,
- 10:42Speaker 2: a lot of jobs came open. This year, we'll see.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Can you imagine them ever going after Deion Sanders?
- 10:50Speaker 2: No, not at this stage. Unless Deion had it going
- 10:53Speaker 2: where like– remember, they just lost like 42-7 to Northwestern.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And the part that's a tough sell with Deion, even
- 11:02Speaker 2: if Deion's healthier this year than he was last year
- 11:04Speaker 2: coming off of all his physical ailments, is– he's not
- 11:11Speaker 2: going to be the one doing the home visits and the,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and the recruiting. And that's the part where it's like,
- 11:17Speaker 2: I don't know if, if you can, you can bank
- 11:19Speaker 2: on a guy, no matter how strong his ties are
- 11:21Speaker 2: to the school. Cause again, just keep in mind who
- 11:23Speaker 2: are the two big coaches you're going up against right now,
- 11:26Speaker 2: Cristobal and some raw, and they are why you better
- 11:29Speaker 2: be all on it on recruiting. And I just think
- 11:31Speaker 2: that's a tough, tough sell that you're going to get
- 11:33Speaker 2: from Dion.
- 11:35Speaker 6: I didn't mean for this to turn into what percentage
- 11:38Speaker 6: of an ACC coach would be back.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I got to throw one more out at you. Dabo Swinney.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Oh, good one. Yes.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Excellent.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I'm going to say like 85%. The number's really high
- 11:50Speaker 2: because they don't have a lot of money to throw around.
- 11:53Speaker 2: And everything I've heard is like Dabo, no offset in
- 11:55Speaker 2: his deal. You know, he has won national titles as
- 12:00Speaker 2: we all know. So, you know, I think it could
- 12:03Speaker 2: be the, It could be the, you know, slow leaning
- 12:08Speaker 2: into the warm bath and you've got to ride it
- 12:10Speaker 2: out with him. Right. You know, like this is what
- 12:12Speaker 2: you got. And I think they could try to convince him, go, hey,
- 12:17Speaker 2: we've got to change up some things we're doing in
- 12:19Speaker 2: terms of staffing and maybe how we approach NIL and
- 12:23Speaker 2: how we approach the portal because this is not working
- 12:26Speaker 2: in this era. Especially if they go five and seven
- 12:29Speaker 2: and miss a bowl and take another step back. It's
- 12:32Speaker 2: one thing when you're like, oh, they're not winning national titles,
- 12:34Speaker 2: but they're still a 10-win team. And they did make
- 12:37Speaker 2: the playoff two years ago. But it's now. It just
- 12:41Speaker 2: feels like that gap is falling. They massively underachieved last year.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And I think the writing is on the wall. But
- 12:47Speaker 2: that's the problem when you spend a fortune on a
- 12:52Speaker 2: head coach's salary and you can't get out from under it.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I think their best hope is that Dabo– looks around
- 12:58Speaker 2: and goes, eh, I don't want to really do this anymore.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And I don't know what he wants to do then. But,
- 13:02Speaker 2: you know, that's what they're on the hook for.
- 13:04Speaker 1: How do you feel about Florida's chances quickly here against
- 13:07Speaker 1: Mississippi this weekend?
- 13:08Speaker 3: At least they have them at home, you know?
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and they have them coming off a huge emotional game.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I actually like the Gators here. Really good D-line. I
- 13:17Speaker 2: feel like Jaden Baugh, by the end of the weekend,
- 13:20Speaker 2: won't be the most underrated. offensive player in college football,
- 13:23Speaker 2: but right now I think he is. I mean, he
- 13:25Speaker 2: is a monster who fits with exactly what Summerall wants.
- 13:28Speaker 2: They're well coached. I think if there's a chance, if
- 13:31Speaker 2: there's a time to get Ole Miss, it is this week.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And I think I'm sure the swamp will be wild.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I would, I'm picking, I'm picking the Gators.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Bruce, as a journalist and a best-selling author, is Kamario
- 13:43Speaker 5: Taylor at Mississippi State the best story in college football
- 13:47Speaker 5: right now where he's doing it for his hometown team
- 13:50Speaker 5: right down the road?
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I mean, it's hard to find
- 13:55Speaker 2: the right comp. Because they were really bad the last
- 13:58Speaker 2: couple of years, and all of a sudden now, again,
- 14:01Speaker 2: they beat Minnesota on the road. It's a nice win.
- 14:03Speaker 2: They beat South Carolina. Nice win. It's not like they
- 14:06Speaker 2: went in to Baton Rouge and took them down or
- 14:09Speaker 2: beat Georgia. But he is a spectacular player. I think
- 14:12Speaker 2: what's worth noting is Mississippi State is an SEC school
- 14:15Speaker 2: that they can throw some money around, and I think
- 14:20Speaker 2: If you're looking at Kamario Taylor as potential first pick
- 14:23Speaker 2: of the draft in 2028, I know Mississippi State can
- 14:28Speaker 2: afford to pay him now, even if other people are saying, oh,
- 14:35Speaker 2: Nichols may be not the guy next year. We could
- 14:37Speaker 2: throw a lot of money at this guy or whatever.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I think Mississippi State, because of his ties to the school,
- 14:43Speaker 2: because he grew up a fan, I think that is
- 14:46Speaker 2: a That is a cool subplot, and we'll see, because
- 14:48Speaker 2: right now you have two quarterbacks in the state of
- 14:50Speaker 2: Mississippi from very different starting points are among the most
- 14:57Speaker 2: compelling players in college football this year.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Have you recently seen Kamario Taylor and Mike Ryan in
- 15:03Speaker 1: the same room together?
- 15:04Speaker 3: You're not going to answer.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I have not, but Mike Ryan's going to need to
- 15:09Speaker 2: pay a fortune to get him out of Mississippi.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Bruce Feldman, check out his work. He's outstanding. He's with
- 15:18Speaker 3: The Athletic.
- 15:19Speaker 1: You can read him there. You can listen to him
- 15:21Speaker 1: there very quickly. And we appreciate the time, sir, on
- 15:23Speaker 1: the way out. You have been doing this for a
- 15:25Speaker 1: long time. You are one of the best we have
- 15:28Speaker 1: at doing this. College football, reporting on it, talking about it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I am wondering if I told you at any point
- 15:33Speaker 1: before last year that one day Indiana would be on
- 15:37Speaker 1: top of the college football world, you would have told
- 15:39Speaker 1: me what?
- 15:41Speaker 2: You're high. There's no way. Indiana, they were the losingest
- 15:45Speaker 2: program in the history of college football, and then this
- 15:48Speaker 2: 65-year-old guy comes in here and talks a lot and
- 15:51Speaker 2: backs it all up. It's a mind-blowing story, and it's
- 15:54Speaker 2: probably one of the best things about college football.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Yes, I've got to be honest with you. Bruce, there's
- 15:57Speaker 3: a good chance I'd be high anyway.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I'm not judging you.
- 16:00Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 16:03Speaker 1: We appreciate it, man. Check him out at The Athletic.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You can read him there. You can listen to him there,
- 16:08Speaker 1: Bruce Feldman. He is one of the best we have.
- 16:10Speaker 3: In this business. Thank you for doing it, sir.
- 16:12Speaker 2: My pleasure.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Thanks guys.
- 16:13Speaker 3: All right. We'll talk to you soon.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It is time for this week's edition of studio gots
- 16:17Speaker 1: all lines, courtesy of our friends over at FanDuel and
- 16:20Speaker 1: the FanDuel sports book. I was three and three last
- 16:23Speaker 1: week in college, nine and nine on the season. I'm
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Jeff Fisher of picking college football games. Let's get
- 16:29Speaker 1: to this week's games though. We have a big slate
- 16:32Speaker 1: of games coming up here in college football. Let's start
- 16:35Speaker 1: with Texas at Tennessee. Texas is minus 4.5. Buy it
- 16:38Speaker 1: down to 4. Take the Longhorns. Arch Manning wins. Peyton
- 16:42Speaker 1: Manning's upset because Tennessee lost. He doesn't care about his nephew.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I'm reporting that exclusively. Texas wins. They cover Texas by
- 16:49Speaker 1: 14 points on the road. Louisville, sneaky good team. Minus 13.5.
- 16:55Speaker 1: They're taking on Wake Forest. I love Louisville here. Buy
- 16:58Speaker 1: it down to 13. That's how much I love them.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I want you to spend extra money and buy a
- 17:03Speaker 1: half point.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Louisville wins. They cover.
- 17:05Speaker 1: They win by 24 points against Wake Forest. Mississippi plus
- 17:10Speaker 1: three and a half at Florida. Buy it up to four.
- 17:14Speaker 3: And really, you have no reason to do so. Why?
- 17:16Speaker 1: Because I think Mississippi wins the game outright. I think
- 17:19Speaker 1: they come in with a chip because Brady Quinn was right.
- 17:22Speaker 1: No one is taking their win against LSU seriously. Otherwise,
- 17:26Speaker 1: they'd be favored against Florida this week.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Mississippi wins the game outright.
- 17:29Speaker 1: They cover Mississippi by a touchdown in Gainesville. Michigan, minus 5.5.
- 17:36Speaker 1: They're taking on Iowa. I don't believe in Iowa. I
- 17:39Speaker 1: shouldn't believe in Michigan, yet I do. Buy it down
- 17:42Speaker 1: to 5.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Michigan wins.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They cover Michigan by 10 points at home. Penn State,
- 17:48Speaker 1: minus 9. Taking on Wisconsin. This is a different new
- 17:51Speaker 1: Penn State team, I think.
- 17:53Speaker 3: They're going to win.
- 17:54Speaker 1: They're going to cover Penn State by 17 points at
- 17:57Speaker 1: home over Wisconsin. Alabama, 12 and a half, taking on
- 18:01Speaker 1: South Carolina. Buy it down to 12. Kalen the boar,
- 18:05Speaker 1: he's got things cranked up at Alabama. And Alabama wins
- 18:09Speaker 1: and covers. They win by three touchdowns. Texas A & M,
- 18:13Speaker 1: must-win game for them, plus 8 and a half. They're
- 18:16Speaker 1: at LSU, must-win game for them. When you have two teams,
- 18:21Speaker 1: both in a must-win situation, I like to take the
- 18:24Speaker 1: team who's getting more than a touchdown. And Texas A &
- 18:27Speaker 1: M is plus 8.5.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I like A & M.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I think that LSU wins, but I'm taking Texas A & M,
- 18:34Speaker 1: LSU wins, by a field goal. Oregon, minus 2.5. They're
- 18:39Speaker 1: taking on USC. Lincoln Riley, do it against Oregon.
- 18:44Speaker 3: He won't. They win. They cover the Ducks by 14. NFL,
- 18:50Speaker 3: 2-4 a week.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Ago, 7-5 on the season, just five games this week. Carolina,
- 18:56Speaker 1: minus 2.5, taking on the Browns. I love Bryce Young.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I love this Carolina team. You know it's going to
- 19:01Speaker 1: be entertaining. Carolina wins, they cover. They win by 10
- 19:05Speaker 1: points on the road.
- 19:06Speaker 3: The Bengals.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, he has a defense, and that is dangerous.
- 19:11Speaker 1: They are minus three and a half at Pittsburgh. I
- 19:13Speaker 1: don't like Pittsburgh. They'll figure out a way to drag
- 19:16Speaker 1: it into the mud.
- 19:16Speaker 3: They always do.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But buy it down to three, take the Bengals. They
- 19:20Speaker 1: win by a touchdown in Pittsburgh. The Chiefs take it
- 19:23Speaker 1: on the Dolphins. This is definitely a pick against the
- 19:26Speaker 1: Dolphins more so than it is a pick on the Chiefs.
- 19:29Speaker 3: They're minus ten and a half. Buy it down to ten.
- 19:31Speaker 3: The Dolphins stink.
- 19:33Speaker 1: They're trying to lose every game. The Chiefs are trying
- 19:35Speaker 1: to win every game. I have the Chiefs here by
- 19:37Speaker 1: 24 points on the road. Saints, minus three against the Raiders.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Are the Raiders for real? We've been asking that question
- 19:45Speaker 3: for decades. They're not. Buy it down to two and
- 19:48Speaker 3: a half. Take the Saints.
- 19:49Speaker 4: We lose.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Tyler Shuck around here. The Saints win. They cover.
- 19:52Speaker 1: The Saints buy a touchdown. And finally, the 49ers minus
- 19:56Speaker 1: eight and a half. Take it on the Arizona Cardinals.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Buy it down to eight. Take Brock Purdy and the Niners.
- 20:02Speaker 3: They win. They cover by 13 points. Those are the picks, everyone.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Good luck.

- 22:05Speaker 3: The great Phil Simms is with us. I have had
- 22:07Speaker 3: a day, Taylor.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Mikey, I got a call this morning from Phil Simms.
- 22:12Speaker 1: And then 15 minutes later, I got a call from
- 22:15Speaker 1: his son, one of his sons, Chris Simms. I mean,
- 22:19Speaker 1: what a day I'm having right now. And Phil Simms
- 22:22Speaker 1: is with us right now. And Chris Simms, his son,
- 22:24Speaker 1: will be back with us starting Sunday. next week and
- 22:27Speaker 1: i'm very much looking forward uh to that phil did
- 22:30Speaker 1: you get all the chores you told me when we
- 22:32Speaker 1: spoke i think uh two hours ago you had a
- 22:34Speaker 1: bunch of things to do what did you have to
- 22:36Speaker 1: do did you get it all done i.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Got it all done yes it was uh it was
- 22:42Speaker 4: there to be had and i took advantage of it
- 22:44Speaker 4: of course in new jersey yes it used to be
- 22:48Speaker 4: where we live we you know we didn't have traffic
- 22:51Speaker 4: at all Right. And now it's just I got to
- 22:54Speaker 4: look it up to see what it is before I
- 22:56Speaker 4: leave the house. Right. Man, traffic has changed dramatically. That's
- 23:00Speaker 4: all I can say.
- 23:01Speaker 3: What's your favorite chore, Phil?
- 23:03Speaker 4: My favorite chore?
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Making breakfast, dinner, whatever food for me to eat. Right.
- 23:11Speaker 4: And I make breakfast basically every day for my wife
- 23:15Speaker 4: and myself. Right.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:17Speaker 3: How many times have you eaten today? It's 1245 right now.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Uh, just one little behind schedule, but yeah, I'm pretty
- 23:25Speaker 4: good at getting three square meals a day. And then
- 23:27Speaker 4: when I go to the gym, sometimes they stay home
- 23:31Speaker 4: and work out, but I step on the scale and
- 23:33Speaker 4: I go, Oh my God.
- 23:36Speaker 3: You don't like what you see, huh?
- 23:38Speaker 4: I'm feeling good. And I think I look okay. And dang,
- 23:41Speaker 4: I am. I think I'm going to stand on that
- 23:44Speaker 4: scale because I've lost about I can feel like I've
- 23:46Speaker 4: lost five or 10 pounds. Step on it. And not
- 23:50Speaker 4: only did not lose any weight, I gained some. So, Phil,
- 23:54Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Speaking of not liking what you see, what do you
- 23:57Speaker 5: think of yesterday's game between the Falcons and the Packers?
- 23:59Speaker 5: Because that that Packers team.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Woof.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, it was really, there's many things to
- 24:09Speaker 4: say about the game.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 4: You know, we all have the answers. They played three games.
- 24:13Speaker 4: So we know, I don't know why they play any
- 24:14Speaker 4: more games because this is what's going to happen. So
- 24:17Speaker 4: we got that. But yeah, it was very surprising. And
- 24:25Speaker 4: I would say, of course, the running backs and the
- 24:27Speaker 4: coaching by Atlanta and everything at And, of course, the quarterback.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Finally.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:33Speaker 4: We got to see Michael Penix play a game.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:37Speaker 4: And even early in the game, I'm like, oh, come on, man.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Let it go. And all of a sudden, he threw
- 24:43Speaker 4: a couple of passes, and I went, now he's in.
- 24:47Speaker 4: And he threw the ball. Once he kind of got
- 24:49Speaker 4: the feel, I'm going to say it may be late
- 24:51Speaker 4: first quarter. I can't remember. exactly when it was, but
- 24:55Speaker 4: he was really accurate. Even though he can throw it hard,
- 24:59Speaker 4: it's easy to catch because it's always a damn beautiful
- 25:03Speaker 4: spiral with some oomph behind it. So that makes it
- 25:08Speaker 4: even easier for the receivers. You ask a receiver, do
- 25:11Speaker 4: you want the ball smooth or do you want me
- 25:12Speaker 4: to just rip it in there to you? And I've
- 25:15Speaker 4: never not said that to one receiver who said– Well,
- 25:18Speaker 4: we want– no. They always say, yeah, get that damn
- 25:20Speaker 4: thing to me as fast as you can. Right.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Phil, how important– Yeah, he's doing it. How important is that?
- 25:26Speaker 1: Because you played quarterback, obviously, at the highest of levels.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You've won two Super Bowls. How important is completing a
- 25:33Speaker 1: couple of early passes, especially for a young quarterback, in
- 25:36Speaker 1: terms of confidence throughout the game? Because I remember you
- 25:38Speaker 1: playing Denver in that Super Bowl, and you completed, I think,
- 25:41Speaker 1: like your first six or seven passes, and I saw
- 25:43Speaker 1: the confidence building in you as the game went on.
- 25:46Speaker 3: So how important is that?
- 25:48Speaker 4: Well, of course, it's very important. And, you know, sometimes
- 25:52Speaker 4: it's going to, no matter who you are, it's going
- 25:53Speaker 4: to start out and you're going to be one for five.
- 25:55Speaker 4: You just got to be tough enough and all that
- 25:58Speaker 4: to still fight through it and be who you are.
- 26:00Speaker 4: It's kind of like a basketball player.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:02Speaker 4: You know, no matter who it is, if they shoot
- 26:04Speaker 4: and miss the first three shots, they're going, damn. I
- 26:07Speaker 4: need a layup.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 26:09Speaker 4: And sometimes, same with the quarterback. When in doubt, you're
- 26:12Speaker 4: calling the plays over there. And whichever team you're talking
- 26:16Speaker 4: about doesn't matter. And you can see whatever with the quarterback.
- 26:20Speaker 4: It's pretty easy to see. Throw a couple screens. Throw
- 26:22Speaker 4: some short passes. And, you know, for a quarterback, that's
- 26:26Speaker 4: as good as throwing it 50 yards down the field.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Now you're in the rhythm. You feel confident. And you
- 26:31Speaker 4: think better, too. No doubt about it.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Listen, you're an all-time New York Giant. I know you
- 26:35Speaker 1: still love the New York Giants.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Put us there. When Jackson Dart goes down, what is
- 26:39Speaker 3: Phil Simms thinking? What is he saying?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Man, I shouldn't be such a fan of the Giants.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know, because you get wrapped up
- 26:49Speaker 4: in it. Seeing him play last year, Jackson Dart, man,
- 26:53Speaker 4: I just thought this could be the year. You know,
- 26:56Speaker 4: really deep down, I kind of thought, you know, he–
- 26:58Speaker 4: if they kind of hang in there a few games
- 27:00Speaker 4: and win a few things, he's the kind of guy
- 27:02Speaker 4: that could be in the world of, is he the MVP? Well,
- 27:07Speaker 4: the Giants, he probably most likely would have been. But, man,
- 27:11Speaker 4: I don't know. I walked out of the room when
- 27:13Speaker 4: it happened.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Really?
- 27:15Speaker 4: And it turned out to be about exactly what I
- 27:17Speaker 4: thought it would. When I saw the hit, I went, man,
- 27:20Speaker 4: that was in a tough spot. And we'll see where
- 27:25Speaker 4: it goes from there. But very, very disappointed. I'm really–
- 27:28Speaker 4: I don't know about you guys. I haven't heard. I
- 27:29Speaker 4: keep looking, and I don't want to call somebody from
- 27:31Speaker 4: the Giants. But what quarterback are they looking to get?
- 27:35Speaker 4: And this would– I would say this to any roster,
- 27:38Speaker 4: any coach right now. Is your third quarterback good enough
- 27:41Speaker 4: to win a game for you? Because that's what you need.
- 27:45Speaker 4: And they go, well, no, we like our starter and
- 27:47Speaker 4: our backup. Okay, your starter gets hurt. Now who's your backup?
- 27:51Speaker 4: So the league, the quarterbacks getting hurt. Pat Kerwin said
- 27:57Speaker 4: this years ago. We used to talk about it at
- 27:59Speaker 4: CBS in the mornings on Sunday. And he would just go,
- 28:03Speaker 4: I don't understand why teams don't have four quarterbacks somewhere
- 28:08Speaker 4: on their team. And I have said it a thousand
- 28:11Speaker 4: times since. Not that anybody listens to me, but you
- 28:15Speaker 4: can train those four quarterbacks. You can kind of get
- 28:18Speaker 4: them ready. So when the starter, if he does get unfortunate,
- 28:22Speaker 4: gets nicked or hurt, then you don't worry so much
- 28:24Speaker 4: about the backup, which most of these teams now, starter
- 28:28Speaker 4: gets hurt and they're like, oh, my God, we got
- 28:30Speaker 4: to play the backup?
- 28:32Speaker 3: Right, yes.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Look, I don't get it. I really don't.
- 28:36Speaker 3: No, Phil, it's a great point.
- 28:37Speaker 4: A lot of good facts out there. Take advantage of it.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:39Speaker 1: No, Phil, it's such a great point, and no one
- 28:41Speaker 1: has more experience with this than you because you went
- 28:44Speaker 1: down your second Super Bowl.
- 28:46Speaker 3: You went down that year. You were having an MVP season.
- 28:48Speaker 3: You went down that year. Were you worried when Jeff
- 28:51Speaker 3: Hostetler came in? No, because you knew he was going
- 28:53Speaker 3: to take care of it for you, right?
- 28:56Speaker 4: Well, yeah, you know, situations like that when you're 10-0,
- 29:01Speaker 4: And you're playing and you think, man, we're pretty good.
- 29:05Speaker 4: That team was so different from the one in 86,
- 29:07Speaker 4: the second one.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Because it was just bludgeoning people to death. You're right.
- 29:13Speaker 4: I mean, it was like run it, run it. There's
- 29:17Speaker 4: a pass. It's wide open. And we played some of
- 29:22Speaker 4: the most boring games you could ever have in that year.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:26Speaker 4: We would run it, beat the clock up. We're playing
- 29:30Speaker 4: Dan Marino, the high-flying Dolphins, and Coach Parcells is just,
- 29:35Speaker 4: you could see, and he goes, you know, Sims, we
- 29:38Speaker 4: got to do this. So we ran the ball. and
- 29:40Speaker 4: I think we held it for like 16 plays in
- 29:42Speaker 4: our opening drive, killed half of the first quarter. And
- 29:45Speaker 4: I'm walking out Dan Marino, I think goes three and out.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I'm walking back out in the field and Parcells goes,
- 29:50Speaker 4: Hey Sims. And I know what he's going to say.
- 29:52Speaker 4: And I said, yeah, what? He takes his finger and
- 29:55Speaker 4: he shoots his wristwatch. I said, yeah, I know. I'm
- 29:58Speaker 4: going to milk the clock.
- 29:59Speaker 3: I got it.
- 30:01Speaker 4: We got to do what we got to do to
- 30:02Speaker 4: keep Dan Marino off the field.
- 30:06Speaker 3: He wanted his quarterback on the field. Go ahead, Mikey.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Phil, is there enough talent in the NFL for every
- 30:12Speaker 2: team to have three quarterbacks where you feel like the third.
- 30:15Speaker 3: One can win you a game? That's a good question.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I think there is. And if they can't
- 30:19Speaker 4: win you the game, then you're a bad judgment of talent.
- 30:22Speaker 4: And maybe it's your offense that stinks, and that's why
- 30:24Speaker 4: they're not doing better. I don't know. So there's a
- 30:27Speaker 4: little bit of that, I think, in the NFL. But, yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 4: there's enough. Hey, look, there could be– I'm not saying
- 30:34Speaker 4: there's going to be five first-rounders this year. I think
- 30:37Speaker 4: that quarterback class is going to back up a little
- 30:39Speaker 4: as we go. But there's probably 15 to 20 quarterbacks
- 30:44Speaker 4: playing in college right now that have NFL talent. And
- 30:48Speaker 4: it's going to keep coming as much or more in
- 30:51Speaker 4: the future because everybody wants to be a quarterback. And
- 30:56Speaker 4: I teach quarterbacks during the offseason. And some days you
- 30:59Speaker 4: can be over there. Well, there's a field close to
- 31:01Speaker 4: me where we throw. And there could be 15 quarterbacks. And,
- 31:05Speaker 4: you know, most of them are young and early in
- 31:07Speaker 4: high school or whatever in high school. And you go, damn,
- 31:10Speaker 4: this kid, if he kind of keeps going forward and
- 31:13Speaker 4: has a good– he could be a pro. I mean,
- 31:15Speaker 4: there are so many kids that can really throw– and
- 31:18Speaker 4: are really into it because it's the position everybody wants
- 31:21Speaker 4: to play.
- 31:22Speaker 1: You know, Phil, I thought the Giants were fine at
- 31:23Speaker 1: the backup quarterback position. I would say if you ranked them,
- 31:26Speaker 1: the backups, before the season started, Jameis would be top
- 31:29Speaker 1: five for everyone, but he was so disappointing against the Rams.
- 31:32Speaker 3: That was tough to see. It was tough to watch.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Well, you know, I think he'll redeem himself here. You know,
- 31:39Speaker 4: Jameis has had great success at times in the NFL. And,
- 31:42Speaker 4: you know, he was really good in practice and scrimmages
- 31:45Speaker 4: and preseason games this year.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:47Speaker 4: So he got– listen, you're talking about getting– it's almost
- 31:50Speaker 4: like back when I was playing, let's say, in 1985.
- 31:54Speaker 4: and I'm the backup quarterback. Somebody gets hurt, and they go,
- 31:57Speaker 4: I got to go in and play against the damn
- 31:59Speaker 4: Chicago Bears? That defense? And that's kind of what happened
- 32:03Speaker 4: to Jameis. The Rams, when he came in, they emptied
- 32:08Speaker 4: the bucket. They started playing, and I'm sure the Giants
- 32:12Speaker 4: thought that the Rams would play them like they played
- 32:16Speaker 4: the 49ers, and they didn't. They used those corners. They
- 32:20Speaker 4: played a lot of man-to-man. They were extremely aggressive. And
- 32:23Speaker 4: that's probably the worst thing that could have happened to Jameis.
- 32:26Speaker 4: I'll be really surprised, guys, if he doesn't redeem himself.
- 32:31Speaker 4: And his personality, his talent, you know, he's a– you
- 32:34Speaker 4: ever been around him? He's a big damn dude.
- 32:37Speaker 3: No, I haven't. No, but we love him. Yes, this
- 32:39Speaker 3: show loves Jameis Winston.
- 32:41Speaker 4: And he can really still throw the ball. You know,
- 32:44Speaker 4: I watched it so much during training camp and everything.
- 32:46Speaker 4: I would have– Jameis, you're right. He would have been
- 32:49Speaker 4: a top five backup in the NFL after what I
- 32:51Speaker 4: saw in the preseason.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Phil, John Harbaugh is a head coach who's intentional with
- 32:55Speaker 5: everything he says. So when he says that Dart is
- 32:57Speaker 5: out for the regular season, it's him implying that he
- 33:00Speaker 5: could be back in time for the postseason. But if
- 33:02Speaker 5: the Giants make it to the postseason, it feels like
- 33:06Speaker 5: you can't go back to Dart if that quarterback, your
- 33:09Speaker 5: backup quarterback got you to the postseason. What would you
- 33:12Speaker 5: do there?
- 33:13Speaker 2: That's a good question.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. I think it's just something you say. I
- 33:18Speaker 4: can't imagine being a head coach and losing the quarterback
- 33:21Speaker 4: who you really were surprised about his talent, how good
- 33:25Speaker 4: it is, and he's great to work with. But, yes,
- 33:28Speaker 4: I'll just say this. If they make it to the playoffs,
- 33:31Speaker 4: Jackson Dart will not be the starter of that football team.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Unless he's practicing and, you know, maybe they give him,
- 33:38Speaker 4: if it works, where he's back on the field for three,
- 33:41Speaker 4: four weeks of practice. And then maybe the last game
- 33:44Speaker 4: of the year, if he plays well there, maybe that scenario.
- 33:47Speaker 4: But I don't see it happening.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Phil, who is playing quarterback better than anyone else in
- 33:52Speaker 1: the league right now?
- 33:53Speaker 3: Is it Josh Allen?
- 33:55Speaker 4: Well, yeah, that's... It's pretty good. That's all I can say.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Mahomes is pretty good, too.
- 34:01Speaker 1: But I'm just wondering who you think is the best
- 34:03Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFL right now.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Oh, who I think the best? Yeah, I would say
- 34:07Speaker 4: right now it's Josh Allen. I never really think about
- 34:10Speaker 4: ranking them. I know my son does that a lot,
- 34:12Speaker 4: but I don't.
- 34:15Speaker 3: You should do it.
- 34:15Speaker 4: It'd be great.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I don't care. People can, you know, say
- 34:19Speaker 4: whatever they want about me. Like, you're going to hurt
- 34:21Speaker 4: my feelings?
- 34:21Speaker 3: Oh, okay, good luck on that.
- 34:24Speaker 4: You want to argue about what I'm doing? Let's go
- 34:27Speaker 4: for it.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Let's see how you do. Yeah. He's smiling.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I just said something to somebody. Well, whatever. I say
- 34:36Speaker 4: it because I know it. I watch the quarterbacks. I'll
- 34:39Speaker 4: tell you who's playing really, really incredibly good. Drew Locke. Yes.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Yes. You love the backups.
- 34:48Speaker 4: Yes. Oh, man. No, he's made so many good throws.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Off balance, people all over him, completing the pass, moving,
- 34:58Speaker 4: whatever it is. Man, when he came in in that
- 35:01Speaker 4: game against New England, I think he threw 24 passes
- 35:05Speaker 4: or something like that. And I'm the guy that sits
- 35:07Speaker 4: there and writes, number one, there's his throw. Do I
- 35:11Speaker 4: check plus? And I do it. And when I got done,
- 35:14Speaker 4: the grade on him for me was 100%. Wow. He
- 35:21Speaker 4: did not make a bad read, a bad throw. And
- 35:24Speaker 4: he made some special throws. And he put it in
- 35:26Speaker 4: places where only his guy could get it done. And
- 35:30Speaker 4: when he was with the Giants, I stood behind him
- 35:34Speaker 4: one day at practice. And, you know, I couldn't get
- 35:36Speaker 4: over it. I said, God, he's so big. I didn't
- 35:37Speaker 4: know he was this damn big. And he's throwing the ball,
- 35:40Speaker 4: and I just go, oh, my God, he's got a really,
- 35:43Speaker 4: really good arm. Right. Really good. And he's going to
- 35:46Speaker 4: find a place. Somebody's going to start him next year.
- 35:48Speaker 4: It won't be probably the Seattle Seahawks, but somebody's going
- 35:50Speaker 4: to come in and get it. But, yeah, and I
- 35:53Speaker 4: remember asking somebody, I said, man, I'm really– surprised by
- 35:57Speaker 4: drew lock i didn't know he was this talented and
- 35:58Speaker 4: they go oh yeah but he don't know how to
- 36:00Speaker 4: play and that was the end of his career with
- 36:02Speaker 4: the johns as he's sitting out there i know he's
- 36:07Speaker 4: a very likable guy he knows how to be the
- 36:10Speaker 4: quarterback you know his personality and all that i'm sure
- 36:13Speaker 4: he's having a few good laughs going yeah how's everybody
- 36:16Speaker 4: like me now okay so you know Got to be careful.
- 36:22Speaker 4: People like, oh, who's your top quarterbacks? Well, usually the
- 36:26Speaker 4: top quarterbacks, I know they're part of it, but they're
- 36:29Speaker 4: playing on a team that's winning a lot of games. Yes.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 4: And then, you know, sometimes I hear, you know, and
- 36:35Speaker 4: I get aggravated about everything. But I hear people say, oh,
- 36:39Speaker 4: he's not playing well. And I go, well, of course
- 36:41Speaker 4: he's not. Because they can't protect. I hate their system.
- 36:46Speaker 4: The receivers, there's no good ones. But you expect him
- 36:49Speaker 4: to play well. Well, tell me about his stupid-ass quarterback rating.
- 36:54Speaker 5: Phil, I feel like that's the perfect lead-in to this question.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Because through two weeks, the Chargers have been one of
- 37:00Speaker 5: the biggest disappointments in the NFL. And it's led to
- 37:03Speaker 5: Justin Herbert being this polarizing quarterback where you have one
- 37:06Speaker 5: camp where everybody thinks he's overrated and the other that
- 37:09Speaker 5: is just making more excuses for him. Where are you
- 37:12Speaker 5: kind of at with Justin Herbert this season?
- 37:15Speaker 4: Well, I ain't going to make no excuses for him.
- 37:16Speaker 4: You know, listen, all you got to do is watch
- 37:18Speaker 4: the games. It kind of tells you. He's got to
- 37:20Speaker 4: throw these incredible passes to get the damn ball completed.
- 37:24Speaker 4: And taking hits and making some of these throws. Look,
- 37:27Speaker 4: I watch him and I do like him. I'll ask
- 37:30Speaker 4: you this. If we rank the quarterbacks, in other words,
- 37:34Speaker 4: where would you put him if you had to play
- 37:36Speaker 4: him on your team? And you know what the NFL
- 37:38Speaker 4: would do? He'd be picked a lot higher than all
- 37:40Speaker 4: the fans and the media and everything has him.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:43Speaker 4: So they're in a tough spot.
- 37:45Speaker 2: I'm.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Literally surprised by it because I thought with the new
- 37:50Speaker 4: offensive coordinator that would change everything and make it easier
- 37:55Speaker 4: on Justin Herbert. So it's a long way to go.
- 37:57Speaker 4: We'll see if they can fix it. But, man, I
- 37:59Speaker 4: watched these first two games, and he's making throws that
- 38:03Speaker 4: only two or three guys in the league can make.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:05Speaker 4: So people don't want to hear that. That's tough. Then
- 38:08Speaker 4: don't ask me because I'm not.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Tracking down the throw. Wait, so we've been killing Josh Allen.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Josh Allen, he completes the percentage. It's what? It's crazy.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Wait, so you're saying, because we've been crushing Justin Herbert,
- 38:26Speaker 1: you're saying that you love Justin Herbert, that there are
- 38:28Speaker 1: maybe a handful of quarterbacks that could physically do.
- 38:31Speaker 3: What Justin Herbert does on a football field.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely.
- 38:35Speaker 3: He has to win, though, Phil. I mean, just a
- 38:37Speaker 3: little bit, you know.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Hey, oh, you're right. They lose only because of him.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Come on.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Come on.
- 38:44Speaker 4: What's the damn game? What happens when he moves and
- 38:47Speaker 4: just gets slaughtered and he's throwing about 30 yards down
- 38:51Speaker 4: the field right on target and then the receiver drops
- 38:54Speaker 4: the damn thing? Right. So I don't know. I'm not making–
- 38:56Speaker 4: I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses. Yeah,
- 38:59Speaker 4: he needs to play better. He's got to be extremely careful.
- 39:02Speaker 4: That's the other thing. Even though he's capable of doing anything–
- 39:07Speaker 4: You can't think that way. You've got to be methodical.
- 39:11Speaker 4: You've got to really protect not turning the ball over
- 39:13Speaker 4: because you're 0-2. And you know what, coaches? Come on.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Let's go. Help it out. They've got enough talent where
- 39:22Speaker 4: they can be a playoff team, but they're not. I
- 39:25Speaker 4: would never look at them and go, wow, they could
- 39:27Speaker 4: get hot and be a Super Bowl contender.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:29Speaker 4: That's not going to happen.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Phil, how do you feel? I know you're a giant.
- 39:33Speaker 3: You're a giant for life.
- 39:34Speaker 1: You're you know, you're trained not to say anything positive
- 39:36Speaker 1: about a Philadelphia Eagle. But I am wondering here, how
- 39:39Speaker 1: do you feel? Because I don't think he gets enough credit.
- 39:42Speaker 1: All the guy does, it doesn't matter who the wide
- 39:44Speaker 1: receivers are, A.J. Brown's off to New England. The guy
- 39:48Speaker 1: just wins football games, Phil. That's it, and that's the
- 39:50Speaker 1: point of the game, isn't it?
- 39:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, okay, he's the wrong thing. You know,
- 39:54Speaker 4: he just does what he's supposed to do, win the game. Okay,
- 40:01Speaker 4: I give him credit for that. But, you know, they
- 40:03Speaker 4: were loaded. And here's the thing, too, watching these two
- 40:07Speaker 4: games for him this year. I admit, he's finally– throws
- 40:12Speaker 4: and his motion and all that is kind of coming
- 40:15Speaker 4: together and it's it's no doubt the what they're doing
- 40:20Speaker 4: they didn't know oh what do you want us to
- 40:22Speaker 4: do no they just here's what we're going to do
- 40:26Speaker 4: and you got to do it yes and had these
- 40:28Speaker 4: problems in the previous years i think and he's off
- 40:32Speaker 4: to a really good start uh throwing the ball better
- 40:36Speaker 4: than i've seen him throw it and uh When he
- 40:39Speaker 4: was in Philadelphia, under the other staff with the coordinators, man,
- 40:44Speaker 4: they ran like four plays every week, the same damn ones.
- 40:48Speaker 4: And I was like, God, is this him or is
- 40:51Speaker 4: it the coaches? And it was a little of both.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Phil, we love you. I'm sorry to keep this a
- 40:57Speaker 1: bit shorter today, but we do have to run. I
- 40:59Speaker 1: would like to spend more time with you. Stop getting
- 41:01Speaker 1: so aggravated. I mean, just smile when someone says something
- 41:04Speaker 1: to you, Phil.
- 41:04Speaker 3: I mean, who cares? You know, you're enjoying life. You're
- 41:07Speaker 3: the big winner in life, Phil. You're a big fucker.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Hey, I love this. I love the fact that I
- 41:14Speaker 4: can sit back and listen to a lot of people.
- 41:17Speaker 4: And I really, every week, I just go, man, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 4: I'm going to just say his name because this is
- 41:22Speaker 4: just bull crap. I'm so sick of listening to him
- 41:25Speaker 4: talk about, oh, this is all her, you know. Shit.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Come on.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Shit.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Watch the games. Judge the person. And, okay, do that.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Don't just go, oh, he only completed 11 out of 17.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Do you guys feel like Phil's talking to me? Because
- 41:44Speaker 1: I gas bag on quarterbacks without watching the game.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yes, you do.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Oh, no, no.
- 41:47Speaker 4: I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to everybody. I mean, man,
- 41:50Speaker 4: you know, when I give a speech, I rip a
- 41:52Speaker 4: lot of people. So there you go.
- 41:55Speaker 3: All right, get out of here.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Enjoy your weekend. Keep me on for a couple minutes.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Push me away.
