- 0:00Speaker 1: And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples,
- 0:03Speaker 1: he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner
- 0:12Speaker 1: of disease. Matthew 10.1 God, I thank you that when
- 0:19Speaker 1: you choose people for greatness, you don't choose the people
- 0:23Speaker 1: who look the part, but you choose those whose hearts
- 0:26Speaker 1: are pure and whose willingness is shouts louder than any
- 0:30Speaker 1: shortcomings they may have. Jesus, because you chose twelve of
- 0:36Speaker 1: the most unlikeliest of characters and personalities, I will not
- 0:41Speaker 1: look for perfection when choosing those who run alongside me,
- 0:46Speaker 1: but I will look for people whose hearts are pure
- 0:49Speaker 1: and who have a genuine willingness to pursue the things
- 0:52Speaker 1: of God. Through twelve disciples, You turned the world right
- 0:58Speaker 1: side up, Jesus. And through my relationships and friendships, I
- 1:04Speaker 1: know that we will make a lasting impact. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 1:32Speaker 2: In our last story, Jesus witnessed one of the greatest
- 1:36Speaker 2: acts a friend can do. A few men cut a
- 1:39Speaker 2: hole in a roof just to get their paralyzed friend
- 1:42Speaker 2: down to Jesus. They went to great lengths to see
- 1:45Speaker 2: their friend healed, and their faith was rewarded. Now we
- 1:49Speaker 2: see the call of Jesus being given to twelve ragtag misfits.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Jesus would choose his followers not based on skill or wisdom,
- 1:58Speaker 2: He would choose the weak of this world to change
- 2:01Speaker 2: the world. This is the heart of God, inspired by
- 2:05Speaker 2: the Gospels.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible

- 2:40Speaker 3: slash stress. Last time, we heard about some amazing friends
- 2:46Speaker 3: who went to extraordinary lengths to help their paralyzed friends
- 2:49Speaker 3: get the healing he needed. They got him to Jesus,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and Jesus did the rest. Jesus saw their faith and
- 2:56Speaker 3: not only healed the man, but forgave the man of
- 2:59Speaker 3: his sins as well, which was most important. It was
- 3:02Speaker 3: an act that shocked and offended religious leaders, as Jesus
- 3:06Speaker 3: was claiming now that he has the authority that only
- 3:09Speaker 3: God has, the authority to forgive. We also heard how
- 3:14Speaker 3: Jesus once again stirred the anger of the Pharisees when
- 3:17Speaker 3: he called Matthew, a tax collector, a hated, despised tax collector,
- 3:22Speaker 3: to be one of his disciples. Jesus made it abundantly
- 3:25Speaker 3: clear to them that he had come to heal the
- 3:28Speaker 3: sick and to help the sinner, not the righteous or
- 3:30Speaker 3: the self-righteous. Today, we'll hear how Jesus ultimately assembles his
- 3:35Speaker 3: group of 12 disciples. None of these men were obvious choices,
- 3:40Speaker 3: but as we'll discover, this was God's plan all along,
- 3:43Speaker 3: to show and to share his glory with the world
- 3:46Speaker 3: through people like you and me. common ordinary people who
- 3:50Speaker 3: will do extraordinary things in the power of Christ. So
- 3:54Speaker 3: let's listen now to the reading of the gospel of
- 3:56Speaker 3: Jesus Christ.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It was the Sabbath, and Jesus entered the synagogue to worship.
- 4:03Speaker 2: The Sabbath was a time for contemplation and relaxation. It
- 4:07Speaker 2: was established by God for the purpose of pausing work
- 4:10Speaker 2: to rest in him. Some of his critics were in
- 4:13Speaker 2: attendance as well, waiting for any cause to rebuke him.
- 4:17Speaker 2: As Jesus entered, he saw a man with a withered hand.
- 4:20Speaker 2: The Pharisees watched Jesus closely as he approached the man.
- 4:25Speaker 2: They were waiting for him to heal him. They were
- 4:27Speaker 2: waiting for him to break the Sabbath law and work.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Jesus knew their hearts. They had completely missed the point.
- 4:35Speaker 2: He took the man with the withered hand and looked
- 4:37Speaker 2: at the Pharisees.' Tell me,' Jesus said,' is it lawful
- 4:42Speaker 2: to do good on the Sabbath?' If there is someone
- 4:45Speaker 2: in need, should we let them pass?' What if their
- 4:47Speaker 2: life is in danger? Should we let them die? The
- 4:51Speaker 2: men were silent, for Jesus was revealing their legalistic hearts.
- 4:56Speaker 2: They didn't care about people. They only cared about looking righteous.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Stretch out your hand, Jesus said to the man. And
- 5:04Speaker 2: in that moment, the man's hand was restored. Everyone marveled
- 5:08Speaker 2: and rejoiced, but the Pharisees left and gathered together, seeking
- 5:12Speaker 2: for an opportunity to destroy him. Jesus took some of
- 5:16Speaker 2: his followers to a mountain. A great crowd followed them
- 5:19Speaker 2: and remained at the bottom of the hills. Jesus looked
- 5:22Speaker 2: out at them. His heart ached for them. They were
- 5:26Speaker 2: like sheep without a shepherd. The wind blew at the
- 5:29Speaker 2: top of the mountain. Jesus' eyes began to water. Do
- 5:34Speaker 2: not pray for the harvest, Jesus said. He gestured to
- 5:37Speaker 2: the people below, for there is a great harvest before us.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Pray for the laborers, for the harvest is plentiful. but
- 5:45Speaker 2: the laborers are few. With those words, Jesus appointed twelve
- 5:50Speaker 2: men to be his apostles, chosen men that would follow
- 5:53Speaker 2: Jesus everywhere. These men were not chosen for their knowledge, status,
- 5:58Speaker 2: or accomplishments. They were chosen for their hearts, their weakness,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and their willingness. He chose Peter, who was once called Simon.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He chose James and John, the sons of Zebedee, He
- 6:11Speaker 2: nicknamed them Sons of Thunder for their fire and enthusiasm.
- 6:16Speaker 2: He chose Andrew, Philip, and Bartholomew, the silent and humble servants.
- 6:21Speaker 2: He chose Matthew, the tax collector, and Thomas, the skeptic.
- 6:26Speaker 2: He chose James and Judas, the zealot. One of the
- 6:29Speaker 2: most unique men he chose was Simon, the zealot. He
- 6:32Speaker 2: was one of the notorious Dagger Men, a league of
- 6:35Speaker 2: assassins trying to overthrow Roman rule. However, Simon renounced his
- 6:40Speaker 2: old ways for the sake of following Christ. Finally, he
- 6:44Speaker 2: chose Judas Iscariot, the man who would betray him. He
- 6:47Speaker 2: chose him and loved him, despite knowing.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Who he would become.
- 6:51Speaker 2: This was the heart of Christ. Jesus' first call to
- 6:56Speaker 2: the disciples was for them to be with him. They
- 6:58Speaker 2: would sit by the campfire sharing stories and hopes. They
- 7:02Speaker 2: would know Jesus as a friend and king. Out of
- 7:05Speaker 2: that relationship, Jesus would send them out to preach, heal,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and cast out demons in his name. The disciples were
- 7:12Speaker 2: empowered by Jesus, and their strength grew day by day.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Whoever desires to come after me must first pick up
- 7:19Speaker 2: his cross and follow me, Jesus said. Whoever holds his
- 7:23Speaker 2: life too dear to lay it down will lose his life. However,
- 7:27Speaker 2: whoever loses his life for my sake will truly find it,
- 7:31Speaker 2: For what does it profit a man if he gains
- 7:33Speaker 2: the world's possessions but loses his own soul? Jesus called
- 7:38Speaker 2: his disciples to something higher. Not religious repetition or vain practices,
- 7:43Speaker 2: he called them to lay down their lives, money, and
- 7:46Speaker 2: convenience so that others may thrive. Jesus would model this
- 7:50Speaker 2: call himself. He would sacrifice everything so that people could
- 7:55Speaker 2: be renewed.
- 7:59Speaker 3: In today's passage, we read about another healing and another
- 8:02Speaker 3: confrontation with the religious establishment. Jesus enters the synagogue on
- 8:08Speaker 3: the Sabbath, and seeing a man with a withered hand,
- 8:11Speaker 3: Jesus took pity on him. He was merciful. This was
- 8:14Speaker 3: an opportunity to show the Pharisees how far they had
- 8:17Speaker 3: veered off the heart of the law, that they no
- 8:19Speaker 3: longer cared about people. To them, the constraints of the
- 8:22Speaker 3: law were about total control and power and for them
- 8:26Speaker 3: to earn God's favor by good works. They added on
- 8:30Speaker 3: to the commandments of God, their own laws. So when
- 8:33Speaker 3: the law commanded rest on the Sabbath, these people took
- 8:37Speaker 3: this to the extreme, meaning they could just overlook people's
- 8:41Speaker 3: great needs because it was the Sabbath day. Jesus saw
- 8:45Speaker 3: this as an opportunity to correct this very wrong thinking.
- 8:49Speaker 3: So he asked them, what was lawful on the Sabbath?
- 8:52Speaker 3: Was it lawful to do good or evil, to save
- 8:55Speaker 3: a life or destroy it? The answer is obvious, isn't it?
- 8:59Speaker 3: And to drive home this point, Jesus told the man
- 9:02Speaker 3: to stretch out his shriveled hand, and immediately the hand
- 9:06Speaker 3: was healed completely. Even today, we must not allow the
- 9:11Speaker 3: rules and restrictions of religion to move us away from
- 9:14Speaker 3: the heart of God. We are missing the point. We
- 9:17Speaker 3: are missing the Lord if we put the law above
- 9:21Speaker 3: Jesus himself. Jesus is teaching us that our righteousness is
- 9:26Speaker 3: in him. And the only way that we can live
- 9:28Speaker 3: a righteous life is from the heart outward, from the
- 9:31Speaker 3: inside out. It is at this point that many of
- 9:35Speaker 3: the Pharisees began to plot against Jesus, looking for a
- 9:39Speaker 3: way to get rid of him. Next, we heard about
- 9:43Speaker 3: Jesus calling his disciples, 12 of them, to a mountain
- 9:46Speaker 3: to speak directly to them away from the crowds. It
- 9:50Speaker 3: was common for rabbis or teachers in those days to
- 9:53Speaker 3: handpick disciples, men to whom they passed down wisdom and guidance.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And this was the model Jesus was following as he
- 10:00Speaker 3: chose these men, these disciples. But when a teacher selected
- 10:05Speaker 3: his disciples, it would typically be the best and the brightest,
- 10:08Speaker 3: the most promising young students. But that's not exactly what
- 10:12Speaker 3: Jesus did, though he saw the potential and the promise
- 10:16Speaker 3: in each man he chose. Yet, He picked some unlikely candidates,
- 10:21Speaker 3: and he gathered a group that was far from homogeneous.
- 10:25Speaker 3: He had fishermen and tradesmen, a tax collector who was
- 10:27Speaker 3: seen as a traitor to Israel, and a Jewish revolutionary,
- 10:31Speaker 3: a nationalist who fought against the Roman government. He even
- 10:34Speaker 3: called a man whom he knew would one day betray
- 10:36Speaker 3: him to his death. Jesus was not looking to the
- 10:40Speaker 3: attributes the world viewed as strength. He picked men whose
- 10:43Speaker 3: hearts he could shape. men who would follow him with
- 10:47Speaker 3: humility and desire to serve. He chose the weak and
- 10:51Speaker 3: even the uneducated so that when they would one day
- 10:53Speaker 3: be great for the kingdom of God, there would be
- 10:56Speaker 3: no question that it was God's power, the power of
- 10:58Speaker 3: Jesus working through them. Just as God chose the lowly
- 11:02Speaker 3: shepherds to be the first to hear of the Savior's
- 11:04Speaker 3: birth and to proclaim his arrival into the world, Jesus
- 11:08Speaker 3: was choosing the unlikely, even some of the outcasts of
- 11:12Speaker 3: society to take his message of the gospel seriously. the
- 11:15Speaker 3: good news to the world. This should be a great
- 11:18Speaker 3: encouragement to all of us, because when God chooses us,
- 11:22Speaker 3: he enables us to do what he's called us to do.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Just as Christ told these men, there is a cost
- 11:28Speaker 3: to following him. In Matthew 16, 24, and 25, we
- 11:30Speaker 3: read these words. Then Jesus said to his disciples, whoever
- 11:36Speaker 3: wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take
- 11:39Speaker 3: up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to
- 11:42Speaker 3: save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their
- 11:45Speaker 3: life for me will find it. To follow Jesus is
- 11:49Speaker 3: not something that is casual or cheap, but it is
- 11:53Speaker 3: demanding and commanding. We are called to pick up the
- 11:56Speaker 3: cross and at any price to be paid, at any cost,
- 11:59Speaker 3: we are to follow Jesus. But there is great reward
- 12:03Speaker 3: for all who put their faith and trust in the Lord.
- 12:06Speaker 3: And we know when we follow Jesus through it all,
- 12:09Speaker 3: that one day we will be rewarded in his presence.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Dear God, we thank you that you choose the weak
- 12:15Speaker 3: and lowly of us in this world to accomplish your purposes.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Help us to be willing, help us to be humble,
- 12:22Speaker 3: ready to give ourselves at any price to follow you,
- 12:25Speaker 3: because we know the promise of eternal life lays within
- 12:29Speaker 3: us and before us. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
