• 0:00
Oh, boy. [upbeat music] Fucked it up right away, didn't you?
• 0:12
[laughs] All right, here we go. Chewy's Lounge Chair Number 20. It's been a while. Been a long fucking time, actually, um, on purpose. But this is the, uh, RAGBRAI edition.
• 0:27
In the salon chair today is, uh, Jeremy Williams. Uh, with me is Kayla and Brad, and we dump spinner, and it's kinda nice. Bye, Felicia. [laughs] Um- Bye, Felicia? Bye. Is that still relevant?
• 0:40
[laughs] That's, that's still a thing. Is it really? [laughs] Jesus. Um, Jeremy has done RAGBRAI with his dad for... Since how long? '84. '84? Yep. Wow. Yeah. Since nam.
• 0:53
Oh, have you always- [laughs] I did it two weeks- You did it... You were thir- what, you were 13 when your dad first dragged you along? I was eight. You were eight? I was 13 on my first full.
• 1:01
Is this considered child abuse? Jesus. Or was that nine? Eight or nine. Okay. Yeah. How fucking old are you people? [laughs] Sick bastards. Kayla, this is your- Uh, I've been doing it since 2017, so six. Six. Six years.
• 1:19
I don't like the taste in my mouth. [laughs] Speak into the mic. Since when? [laughs] Whoa, hey. Hey. And we're back. [laughs] Yeah, okay. There. Do you feel better now? I do, actually. [laughs] It's pretty natural.
• 1:32
And then our, and our RAGBRAI expert, Brad, how many have you done? Do you even know what it is? Yeah, what, what is this that you speak of? [laughs] RAGBRAI, it's the, uh, Des Moines Registry's Great Ride Across Iowa.
• 1:43
It's been going on for- Oh, yeah... I think, I don't know... dip back tire in one river and- Almost 50 years, right? Yeah, I think it started in- I think next year... like '73 or something like that.
• 1:51
Yeah, isn't it, like- I think next year is supposed to be their 50th year. Dip back tire- I read that somewhere. But you can't count the COVID year. Oh, shit. What, what do you do there?
• 1:58
I think, I think the last year I did it- Yeah, I don't know... was probably the 35th anniversary maybe. 'Cause yes, I've done some. I think I did- But it sounds like,
• 2:05
uh, dip back tire in one river, uh, drink a shitload and ride across Iowa, and then dip front tire in other river. Is that how I understand it? That's... Yeah. Okay. And it's, and it's to prove that Iowa's not flat.
• 2:18
Wasn't that their- [laughs] Wasn't that their general- Yeah. Whatever. And- What does it stand for? What did they just say? The Des Moines... Is... Oh, the Registry's Great Ride Across Iowa.
• 2:27
The, the Des Moines Registers. Oh, the Registers. That's it, yeah. Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Sounds like... Yeah. I'm not from there.
• 2:34
Well, Ronald does what I consider TAGBRAI, and that's the Alternate Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. 'Cause you always did your own thing. I thought that was DRAGBRAI. No, no, no. [laughs] Well, I've done DRAGBRAI, yes.
• 2:44
[laughs] I'm sorry, that's not happening anymore? Oh, we haven't done that. Well, we- We should bring it back... we haven't done it for a long time. The guy...
• 2:50
You know, that was, that was the weirdest group I ever rode with. These guys were, like, next to professional cyclists, some of them.
• 2:55
And then, and then their real jobs were, like, one was an English teacher, one was a brain surgeon, one was a lawyer. But then we did DRAGBRAI and they were the, the prettiest guys you've ever seen.
• 3:07
[laughs] But they, they were good about it. They got people to beg them to d- "Will you do it in our town next year?" That's funny. Oh, it was hilarious. And was this one day or the whole week of RAGBRAI?
• 3:16
Well, we did it, we did it one day, but then the winner wore a sash the rest of the week. Oh. And that sash was fucking worth every minute of wearing that stupid thing.
• 3:24
[laughs] So did you guys go on, like, the s- uh, the same route or a different route? No, it... D- RAGBRAI's a different route every year. Well, right, but you weren't on the...
• 3:31
Was it on the same weekend as RAGBRAI or- No, it was during RAGBRAI. We were doing- Or week or whatever the hell it is... we were doing RAGBRAI. And these guys are really fun 'cause they used to go, like...
• 3:38
They would go, like, to garage sales and buy clothes and shit like that, right? [laughs] And then they would, and then they would just designate a day, and they were kinda sly about it.
• 3:45
So they would, like, find a city park, and then they would do this drag show, and then they would, they would crown a queen, and then we would go. And then I'm, I'm not kidding, the year I won it, I literally...
• 3:53
You went in there and there's a line of 400 people waiting to get a beer, and you walk right to the fuck- fricking front of the line. You're like a, you were like a bride at a wedding. That's funny.
• 4:00
[laughs] [laughs] You, you, you, and he wanted a beer. I dan- I danced with Charles Quar- Quar- Charles Quarrelt. [laughs] I'm... This sounds more interesting than RAGBRAI. Well- But- There is DRAGBRAI...
• 4:10
but it's part, it was part of RAGBRAI. DRAGBRAI. I mean, it was part of RAGBRAI. And, and I'm assu- So- So going back to what we...
• 4:14
The reason I wanted to bring up RAGBRAI today was is because we've got one that's been doing it forever. I did it for, I don't know, 10, 12 years from, like, say '91, '92 until whenever.
• 4:26
Uh, Kayla's done it six times now, and you've never done it, so this is like- Yeah... this is... to me, this is, like, the... And I fucked up and didn't have Becca come, 'cause what...
• 4:34
Becca's, Becca's would have a completely different attitude because she's actually done it and worked at where she... Their band's been playing at it. Yeah.
• 4:39
So she's got a totally different outlook on it, and maybe we'll have to do another one some other time.
• 4:43
But, um, what I wanna get at is- But, but, but- I've got a couple- To your point, though, I mean, RAGBRAI's an event, but there's teams and groups, and they have their own events specific to that group going on during the week.
• 5:00
Right, and it's- So it's kinda what you make of it... a- and it's, and it's basically... So th- I have to write over here. There's a route. Oh, yeah. Should pause for a second there. That's all right.
• 5:08
There's a route, and e- and there's an overnight town, and basically there's stops along the way in all these other towns. There's...
• 5:14
The first town is usually 10 miles out, and that's where you, that's where you have your first Bloody Mary. [laughs] And then, you know, and then it's just drinking and riding the rest of the way. I mean, I...
• 5:23
The, the, the, the per- If, if you want to. Some people don't. Well- Some people don't drink. They start at sun up. They get done by 10 in the morning, and then I don't know what they do the rest of the day.
• 5:34
[laughs] Well, well, w- I've seen some pretty, like, fun videos of, like, host houses that you can, like, rent out, and, like, some have pools and turn into, like, parties and- Well, you- Looks like a good time...
• 5:48
I think both of you two always get, like, a host house, right? We try to. Um, some... Every year is a little bit different, 'cause, like, some... Like, this year we've been struggling 'cause the towns are so small.
• 6:00
Like, they have basically shut down some of the towns from even hosting because they've maxed out- Like some of the towns are like maybe 1,000 population. How do you bring in 20,000 riders?
• 6:11
That sounds like a southern route usually runs into that trouble more often, isn't it? I mean, Pocahontas, I don't remember how... There was like a bunch of small towns. Yeah, there's, there's some small...
• 6:19
Emmetsburg's pretty small. But like last year we had, I think, three or four host homes that they had exactly that, like a huge pool, and we didn't even go into town 'cause we were having so much fun at the host home.
• 6:31
Well, that's... Yeah, we, uh, we've, um, once you start doing this it just becomes RAGBRAI stories that we've had that, that are always are somewhat similar.
• 6:37
Like, we were in a town, we had a guy come up and go, "Where are you guys staying?" We went, "We don't know yet." And he goes, "Come stay at my house."
• 6:42
He was so mad at how much they were charging for food that we went up to his house and we had like... I don't know, we had probably, we had our own bus then, and they went into town and they bought us food.
• 6:52
They bought like steaks and shit and cooked them for us. Wow. They were just pissed off about how much they were s- that they were charging food, and that wasn't... And this was way back when it wasn't expensive.
• 7:00
Now it- Mm-hmm... what we, what you spend in a day now is what we spent for the whole week back then. Yeah.
• 7:05
Well, I have an inside kind of side from the vendors, because my mom when I was like younger and it went through Cresco, I think that was like 2003, she did like a potato [laughs] vendor food stand.
• 7:17
And the amount that they charged her to be a, a food vendor, like she barely even broke even. Well, that's the point. The, and that's, that's kind of my bitch about why I don't go anymore, because- Yeah...
• 7:26
I rode the '90s- It's just a money grab, right? Well, well, and know, and, and back then you were happy to pay the money because you were giving... What you gave the towns was basically whatever you paid for food.
• 7:36
That, they charged them a little bit, but not, [clears throat] not what they do now. Now it's a big corporation and they were, they, you know, they... I don't know. They, they- Yeah...
• 7:44
they go into the towns and they say...
• 7:45
I don't know if they still do, and you guys correct me if I'm wrong 'cause I haven't been on it for a while, but they go in there and say, "This bar's open, that bar's closed, and this is the beer you're gonna sell, and take the rest of it out of the coolers."
• 7:55
No shit. You, you, if- There's some team captains that are trying to crack down on that. Um, the team captain of Team Lizard, he is trying to... 'Cause there was also issues where the cops were like shutting down towns.
• 8:06
Like, you couldn't even get water anywhere, and some days you're like struggling and you're like, "Really? I can't even get a water in this town and I have another like 30 or 40 miles per se?" Yeah. That's- Wow.
• 8:16
It's, they- Yeah, the-... they are getting better at that though... the state patrol n- and this has just started in the last five years- Yeah...
• 8:22
where the state patrol follow at the end and they start shutting the towns down. So it's getting to the point where you almost have to leave at, I don't know, 7:00 in the morning, 8:00 in the morning,
• 8:37
where to, to keep ahead of the town shutting down, which generally isn't too tough until you hit the day with the Century Loop. Yeah.
• 8:46
So you're, you're coming in 20, 25 miles extra and you're coming into these towns and they're shutting them down, and like all you want is a Gatorade. Yeah, what...
• 8:55
I mean, what's the, what's the reasoning behind shutting them down? Is it just- 'Cause they don't want things to get out of hand. Um- The parties and- Yeah.
• 9:01
They wanna kind of regulate it a little bit, but- They don't want people riding in in the dark without lights. Oh, th- and- Yeah...
• 9:06
it was always, it was always the, uh, you know, in the '90s it was always the, the town before the f- the hosting town for where, where you stayed would try to get you to stay there as late as you could 'cause they wanted your money.
• 9:16
Yeah. Mm-hmm. And I can remember them loading a flatbed semi full of drunk people on their bicycles and [laughs] driving them 10 miles down the highway to get them to the end of the RAGBRAI, you know.
• 9:23
It was, yeah, that wasn't uncommon. And then I think shortly after that is when they started regulating, and then they really started...
• 9:29
'Cause one of the last ones I did there was a cop, and they only did the last town of the day. Oh, yeah. You know, they would be there and at 5:00 at night that town shut down.
• 9:38
So you had to be, you had to be within 10 miles of the finish line or thereabouts. Whatever the last town was before the town you stayed in, you had to be there by 5:00. Oh.
• 9:45
And they were there for a half hour, and then if you either just went and laid in a ditch and hid from them, then you can do whatever you wanted after that. It was no big deal. Yeah. You sound experienced in that regard.
• 9:54
Laying in a ditch? Yeah. I did 10 years without even setting up a tent. Wow. I, uh, I found a porch- That's not weird. Well, we might as well tell the one weird story. We, we found a...
• 10:04
We were staying with some friends of ours and, um, they were st- we were staying at her, her niece's house.
• 10:10
And then so Pete Daley and I just went into town and got hammered and came back and we went crawling in the house, went down the basement. God, there's nobody down... sleeping down here.
• 10:18
So we grabbed a couch and a couple chairs and went to sleep, and got up the next morning, walked outside.
• 10:22
And as we're walking out the side door, my friends are walking out of the house next door and so we stayed [laughs] in the wrong house. [laughs] Whoops. There was no whoops.
• 10:33
Nobody w- I don't think anybody was home, 'cause nobody... We never heard anybody, never talked to anybody. Just we were in the wrong house. Small town Iowa. [laughs] Yeah. "Honey, there's some weirdos in the basement.
• 10:43
Just be quiet and they'll leave."
• 10:44
[laughs] But, but you've done it, but Jeremy, you've done it for so long that, and you're still doing it, which is impressive to me because I've gone back and done bits and pieces of it, and it's not what I remember.
• 10:56
So what, what brings you back? Is it the- Well- Is it the actual cycling or is it- No, I mean, when I first started going and I was younger, I mean, I've always gone with my dad. Every RAGBRAI I've been on, my dad goes.
• 11:10
He doesn't ride as much anymore, but he'll be 74 this year. Wow. He rides a little bit. Well, that's cool.
• 11:15
But it's, it's, it's neat to go spend the week with him, but it's just kind of the turnover of, well, when I first started going it was more my dad and his friends, and I got to know them.
• 11:29
And then as I kinda got into high school and even college, a couple of my own friends would come.
• 11:37
But now my dad's friends are kinda starting to stop going, and now it's, it's kinda turned into, well, it's a few of my friends from college. For a few years it was kind of a family thing where my,
• 11:50
my cousin and my uncle would go, and then I had some other cousins that go. And actually this year I think we're gonna have two of my cousins and my aunt, or I'm in Minnesota, my aunt- [laughs]... are, are going to go.
• 12:03
Yeah, is it, did you bring a bug with? [laughs]So it's, I mean, it's family, it's, it's friends that I've had since college. Kind of a, we're a small...
• 12:14
So Kayla and I, I think, have definitely very different RAGBRAI experiences, 'cause I'm in a group that we usually keep around 10 people. Okay. So it's a smaller group. Generally we all, all of us ride together. Okay.
• 12:30
So we're together all day. Cell phones make it way easier to stay connected. I mean, I remember back- You don't get service though. How does that help? You can send a text. You can usually get a text to go through.
• 12:40
Do you remember standing in line to use a fucking payphone? Yeah, or- [laughs] I'm not shitting you. Now you have dated yourself. [laughs] No, I'm not, I'm not shitting you. It was...
• 12:49
Well, because, because- Do you carry, like, a pocket full of change as well? I have... No. [laughs] Got a fucking coin purse. [laughs] You know I got a coin purse. You've seen me pick it up.
• 12:58
For a while- Keep the fucking change, Ron. For a while, like AT&T and stuff would come into town and set up, like, phone banks. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You could make a phone... Remember the message board?
• 13:08
You would go to the- Yep... they would have... You would c- go to the main area in the town, and they would have these big boards set up. So you'd just leave a message for, like, your people?
• 13:18
You'd leave, you would write a note on a piece of paper, and we would always put our note on, in the upper right-hand corner. So everybody knew. So probably had like a- They should bring that back.
• 13:27
Yeah, that's, that's actually pretty cool. So, so there's multiple boards, 'cause there... I mean, one board wasn't enough, so there'd be like five- Sure... boards front and back, I mean.
• 13:35
So you would go from board to board- Try to find your-... and look, and look in the upper right-hand corner- That's cool... and eventually- They should do that... you would, you would find your note.
• 13:43
That's actually a cool- They should do that. It would be fun to do. I mean, 'cause that, yeah, for the first...
• 13:46
Well, because w- we were lucky, 'cause the first three years I did it I rode for Trek Bicycle, and we fixed bikes. So they had a spot, and then there was, we had our label up in the... And w- we'd rate.
• 13:54
It was up in this corner on this... And there was three boards. We was up in this corner of this board. I remember that. Sponsored RAGBRAI rider? Not at all. No, we fixed bikes. [laughs] Not a big deal. No.
• 14:04
We'll just glaze over this. No. He's so corporate. We, it was- Yeah. [laughs] They, they begged us to go along. They, well, they- They did... they, well, they did. Yeah, because they knew I was such a good mechanic.
• 14:12
[laughs] They, uh- "Here's a T-shirt and a beer. Now fix all of our fucking bikes." They, they had this, they had this idea to promote cycling, basically, and they, so they had... I can't remember how many teams we had.
• 14:22
We had, like, five teams of three, something like that, whatever it was, and we pulled a burly trailer full of parts, and then, and tools.
• 14:29
And then we would ride along, and if somebody's broke down along the side, we would, they would pay for the parts, and we would just repair it. If it was just mechanical, we were donating our time.
• 14:36
And we got so fucking drunk doing this all the time. Oh, I bet. It was just insane. 'Cause people go, "You're not gonna get paid for this?" "No." And then they go, "Well, they're..."
• 14:43
They got food and stuff for us back at the- Sure... you know, we had a place to stay, and they held our shit for us.
• 14:48
But, um, um, it eventually ended up they canceled it after three years because the bike shops would send vans out, and they'd say- Wow, yeah...
• 14:55
"Never mind, we're waiting for the people that are riding- Well, 'cause it's a-... a bicycle to fix them," right? Which, so it was... Yeah. 'Cause it's all a money grab. I know that's kinda been your thing- Oh...
• 15:02
is it's a, just a big- Well, those guys, the bike shops, no, um, the bike shop guys, yes, they make money- Well, if it's a-... but they don't make a ton of money.
• 15:08
And it's, I mean, if you're- I suppose if it's a bike shop guy, I'm probably more comfortable with it, as opposed to, like- Well, right.
• 15:13
I, I bumped into Charlie Tree last year coming back from RAGBRAI, and he was just a puddle. He, like, literally pulled over coming out of Decorah 'cause he just needed a little rest a little bit.
• 15:21
Because it's, it's not, it's a long day and you're in the sun, and, and you're, and you're doing the same monotonous bullshit over and over again. Every... It's like, if there's a really- Shout out to Charlie, though.
• 15:31
I've appreciated him on the roads. Oh, yeah. And, like, he sees me, and he will stop the whole line and be like, "Kayla, come up here." Yeah, right. And it's great.
• 15:37
Well, I mean, there's just, you know, and, and there's, and there's, and there's, a lot of them are, a lot of the ones in Iowa especially are, were, are family businesses. So it's- Sure...
• 15:44
their, their kids that are running it. You know, they're running the shop at home, and then the kids are out running the business, and it's a big family. And, and n- none- And that's cool...
• 15:50
nobody in the bike industry gets rich. Right. I mean, so i- it's not they're getting rich. They're really s- providing a service. Sure. So it's really good, it's a really good thing, but it's, it's not fun. It's,
• 16:00
I, uh, the, the traveling food vendors that, I mean, it's nice that you find somebody that, you find a group you can hang around with and stuff, because otherwise it's not fun for those guys either. It can't be. Mr.
• 16:10
Pork Chop and Mr. Slushie are really close with Team Rotor, so we usually go and hang out with them at least a couple nights, or at least one big night where we party with them. But we stop every day.
• 16:20
But back, back to your point with RAGBRAI, kind of- Hold on, hold on just a second. [can opening] Okay, continue. That's the bell. [laughs] Oh, you didn't even fucking finish it, you rookie.
• 16:29
[laughs] I broke my fingernail. Leave me alone. Yeah. Jesus Christ. I'm having, I'm having a rough week, all right? Oh, man. [laughs] Jesus. And now you know I'm having a rough week.
• 16:37
All right, delete this entire podcast. [laughs] We're fucking- And start over. We're gonna- We're starting over... start over for the fourth time. Fail. Yeah.
• 16:43
Hey, Jeremy and I tried to do one one time that we, we, after an hour we realized that we weren't recording. Oh. Yeah, I've heard this story so many times. Anyway, get back to RAGBRAI. Well, yeah. What a fucking pile on.
• 16:52
But yeah, kind of the, the, the talk of the corporate, you don't see, like, the, the little kid with the food stand in the front of their farmhouse anymore.
• 17:01
'Cause I, I do really enjoy- With the wagon The last couple years especially. Yeah, I agree with that... yeah, they've, they've really kinda shut that down. Does that bother you? Yeah.
• 17:07
It's, it's- That's what I enjoyed about RAGBRAI was all the, like- Well, that's what sounds cool is the local- Yeah... and seeing... Yeah, I know, I agree. Yeah...
• 17:13
like the random farmers that set up a Slip 'N Slide- Sure...
• 17:15
and just have, like, cases of free beer and- So those are the cool stories that I heard from the, you know, the Rotor teams back in the day when we always used to play hockey together. Yep.
• 17:23
Is they'd come back with these stories about, "Hey, yeah, you know, this guy set up his, his pool and we had a Slip 'N Slide, and we played-" Yeah. "... you know, two-week cup."
• 17:32
And I'm not, I'm not, I'm not saying it doesn't go on still. I didn't, I... [laughs] But, but to, to the, to the positive though, because of that, you see way more free beer stops. Ah. Because they've, they get- What?
• 17:43
... they've gotten really kinda hard ass- Now, all right... on the whole, like- I'm interested. Yeah... to sell beer you gotta- Gotta have licensing... you gotta license- Sure... blah, blah, blah.
• 17:51
So you get these farmhouses- It's like-... with the sign out front- Tip jars and shit... free beer. Yeah. And then they just have a tip jar. Well, yeah, that shit, I mean, that's cool. Yeah.
• 18:00
'Cause I mean, now I'm interested. So, and last, last year we actually made a, a, a, a good gall- galleon effort of stopping at all the free beer stops, and we stopped at a lot. Yes.
• 18:09
And, and these, you don't really, kinda you're riding along and you're just like If you're not looking, but when you start noticing them, there's a lot of them.
• 18:17
Well, a lot of times they're, they're fundraisers for the, um, you know, goodwill for beer and then, and then the kids going on a FFA trip or something like that. See, that's just cool to me. Right. Oh yeah, no.
• 18:27
  That's, that's, that's what I thought- That's what it should be...
• 18:30
in my opinion I, that's, the little bit I've done RAGBRAI is stopping in a few towns and not really riding the route, so I can't really say I was on RAGBRAI. I was sort of like close to it, but- Sure...
• 18:38
I did like, I did, I did the- But still supporting somehow... I did the cleavage tour one day from, um- A cleavage tour? [laughs] Wait, what? When you ride backwards- Tell me more.
• 18:45
[laughs] When you, when you're riding backwards against the crowd, it's the cleavage tour. [laughs] Well, I have- I've never heard that term... I've done a different cleavage tour.
• 18:52
[laughs] Yeah, that sounded way fucking cooler. But yeah, I wanna- [laughs] I think, I think I like hers better. [laughs] Yes. Let's go with Kayla's cleavage tour.
• 19:00
So- So Ron, when you were going, did they have, now they have the, the, like, craft beer beer gardens out in the country. That wasn't there. That wasn't.
• 19:08
Out in the country, out in the country it would've been- Well, the I- like the Iowa Beer Bus. Oh, yeah. And what's the other one called? There's the- So that's cool. That's cool... Back Pocket. I think- There you go.
• 19:15
Yeah... uh, no- Back Pocket Beer Garden...
• 19:17
I think the last one, the last one, the last full one I did, I think they were just starting that, and w- it was just, I don't know if it was necessarily a all the craft beers from, from Iowa, but it was a group of them had bought the bus and it, it was a, it was a stop and a field all the time.
• 19:30
Yeah. There was one where they had the guy just to attract people. They had some kid that lived at that house.
• 19:35
They built up a bunch of bale ha- hays of- [laughs] bales of hay and ramps, and he was jumping his motorcycle [laughs] by the bus. Oh my God. [laughs] Yeah. Typical day of RAGBRAI. Yeah. That's hilarious.
• 19:45
I've been in the middle of nowhere at a farmer's house and ridden a mechanical bull. Like- Yes... it's like why- See, this is-... is this here?
• 19:52
See, these are, these are the stories that I hear and I'm like, "God, this sounds like fun." You know?
• 19:56
Oh, I- And then, and then- Don't get me wrong, I think- And then there's old fucking fuddy-dud Joey over here just like- Well, no, I- [laughs]... RAGBRAI, I don't know.
• 20:03
But you really have to be out on the route, like the whole ride every day- You, if you've never done it-... otherwise you'll miss on it... you have to go do it. Yeah. I wanna do it. I, it- It's definitely bucket list...
• 20:12
and maybe I, and maybe I'd have more fun doing it again if I do it with somebody who hasn't been on it because- Yeah... I mean, you know, think about, think about you guys.
• 20:19
A lot of the buses now have an offsite bar they go to rather than following the route. You know? And they, and- There, there's always an off-route party every day. Yeah. Yeah. And that's set up by the bus guys, right?
• 20:30
The different club teams. Usually. Different teams will do that. So I would have to train if you want me to ride this whole thing. Oh yeah. You don't- You, no- Can you bike 10 miles at a time, you'll be fine.
• 20:38
It's w- Not without bitching. W- [laughs] You bitch regardless. What I said was is- But go ahead. That's fair... it's, it's, it's got nothing to do with how far you can pedal.
• 20:45
It's got how long can you sit in chamois and on a bike seat. Right. 'Cause it's gonna be a 10-hour day for you. That's, and that's what I talk about, like, with training is, like, I need to- Yeah...
• 20:54
you know- We did, uh-... I need to warm up the old fucking butt cheeks and taint. We, we did a, we did a 72-mile day. Um, we averaged 22 mile, 21, 22 miles an hour. Um, and it took us 16 hours to do it.
• 21:06
We like took, we took two power naps 'cause we were so drunk. Yeah. Well, sure. You know? And then, and then, and there were idiots doing a draft line of, I don't know, 20 guys, 30 guys.
• 21:14
My worry is is it's always hot and, uh, like- Yeah. Yeah. Last year- It is hot... what did me in was there was, like, the fires up north, and so it was really- Smoky... smoky- Yep, yep... and really humid. Yep.
• 21:25
And like my asthma hasn't bothered me in years, but, like, I- Oh yeah, that's- There was days where I, like, couldn't breathe... yeah, I hate those. When you drop the air quality- Yeah. Yeah. That was miserable.
• 21:34
I hate those degens from up north. [laughs] So we can do, we can- [laughs] So the one thing I wanna ask you guys about that you probably never heard about, so on RAGBRAI there's always a century day,
• 21:45
and s- But it's usually optional. Well, yeah, well, that's, so- It used to be required. Like, you had no choice. You had to do- When was, when was that? Way back. Late '70s, early '80s.
• 21:54
I was gonna say because w- when I- I so required to, like, get credit for- You had it. You, you had to ride. There was a 100-mile day, no options. Yeah. Okay, so, and, and it's back. But what if you don't?
• 22:03
Like, does- What is- Does everybody get, like, a fucking trophy when you- You get a patch. Usually you get a patch if you do it. Oh, okay. Yeah. So to get your patch you had to- You had to do 100 miles...
• 22:10
you had to do the 100 miles. Okay. And, and when, when, the, the years that I did, the 10, 12 years I did it, um, and by the way, I did it in a single speed and a fucking fixed gear. [laughs] Fucking not a big deal.
• 22:18
Yeah, so- [laughs] So, but- [laughs] And I did it in drag. Just, you know. [laughs] Yeah. And in drag too, yes. Both. But, but, um- And cleavage tour. Yeah. [laughs] We've done that a couple times.
• 22:27
He is not doing the right cleavage tour, so. Yeah. D- can you explain it to me or do you have to be off air to explain it? No. I don't have to be- Your cleavage- When did we start filtered? [laughs] I, I don't know.
• 22:37
[laughs] Your cleavage tour sucks. We'll just leave it at that. [laughs] Let's talk about- No, well, not really. It d- well, it does because he gets yelled at a lot for going the wrong way. [laughs] Oh, of course.
• 22:44
I'm like, I'm like- Of course you love that. Yeah. And then, and then- Bike up, bike up. Yeah. [laughs] They go, "And they go, why you going that way?"
• 22:50
And I'm like, just point at the girl, the next girl in front of me going, "Seriously? You're asking that question?" [laughs] But, but, um, so this year it's 100 miles and it's 105 miles. That was a good one. It was.
• 23:02
So it's 105 miles, and I'm like, and, and we're down in Decorah this weekend. Everybody's talking about it because they're, they're want- they have to get back for Nordic Fest, so they can only do a couple days of it.
• 23:11
And so they're trying to tie it in and they're going, "I don't wanna drive all the way over there and do 105 miles one day, 40 miles the next day, then go home." They- Who's talking about doing...
• 23:19
Wait, I missed that part. Well, like, Gordon Jackie, I don't know. Um- What, what day is the- A bunch of guys in Decorah were talking about coming to- Can I bail on Team Roeder and come ride with you guys?
• 23:26
What day is the century day? Or you can come join us. We could c- well, let's talk about that. You have the map. We gotta talk about that. What day is the century day this year?
• 23:32
Uh, the century day is, it's from Emmetsburg to Mason- Oh, it's, that's early in the week then. I think it is. I think it's Tuesday, I think it's Tuesday. Okay. And then Wednesday goes from Mason City to Charles City.
• 23:42
So what they, they, they added the gravel loop now, like four or five years ago that's also optional. Well, I don't see that on there. I don't either. There is a gravel route loop. Yeah.
• 23:50
Now that you say that- That'd be fun... I don't remember there being a gravel route.
• 23:52
They named it after the- But, but I also can see on here you can go from Britt straight over and catch one of those side streets to Mason City and, and probably cut that 105, looks like maybe 25 miles.
• 24:02
Then you're doing Tagbrai. Yeah. Why did you come up with that? We always called it only dead fish follow the stream ride. [laughs] [laughs] Uh, that's a mouthful though.
• 24:13
I feel like Tagbrai- And then you get drunk and it's really a dead- That was, uh, some guys from Des Moines. They actually had T-shirts made. Cleavage- And they would, they would never- Cleavage, mouthful...
• 24:20
they would never, they would- Oh. [laughs] Talking about filters. What they, they never ride, they never ride the whole route.
• 24:27
They always, they would always stop at the, the correct cities to stop and party in, but they were never on the route.
• 24:31
The rest of the time they were off route, 'cause they never wanted to wear helmets and they'd, they liked doing gravel better back before gravel was cool. Yeah, so the, it sounds like,
• 24:40
you know, I'm sure the, the century stuff is now optional because they don't want the liability of somebody- No, now it's- No... this year it's required... it's not. It's required. It's all required. Oh, it is required?
• 24:48
Yeah, the route is, yeah, it's- So in order to get your... Yep. But that's because- In order to get your- But even, even with all the route, it was always a 70-mile day.
• 24:54
So- God, did you guys do, well, you didn't, but did you do this, uh, sequicentennial ride where we did 150 one day? I did. That sucked. That was horrible. It was- The biggest day was 120.
• 25:02
So we rode- That sounds- It ended in Charles City... all of that sounds awful. We entered in Charles City. That day was awful. I don't remember where we started, but the end town was Charles City,
• 25:12
and it was a 70-mile day. Yes. And there was a 30-mile century loop, and there was another loop where you could do 150. So, yeah. So you, you rode 80 miles and you- The century route came back in the middle of the route.
• 25:25
Yeah. But if you did this, if you did the 150, you went back to the start- Yeah... and then came back again. So you rode 80 miles and you're back- That sounds awful... in the town where you started. And you started.
• 25:33
[laughs] That sounds awful. Jesus. [laughs] And then you had to ride it again.
• 25:36
And, and I did it, and I did it, and, and in fact, and you were so close that you were, like, less than a mile apart on the route going back as the route going out toward the finish.
• 25:44
And, you know, the dude, the old guy that rode, uh, he rode, he rode a Schwinn- Single speed?... single speed that was- 39 man on the 41 Schwinn- Yes... or whatever... right, yeah.
• 25:53
And, uh, um, I, I knew they were selling frozen candy bars. We were riding back with him on the, after he'd got back to the original start town and was riding back, and they were selling frozen candy bars.
• 26:03
And [laughs] uh, I can't think who I was riding with.
• 26:05
We're like, he looked horrible, so we, like, bailed off the route, found a gravel road, shot across back to the route going back into town, grabbed, like, all the frozen candy bars we could get our hands on, and then rode back and then rode with him for about 30 miles while he, he ate, like, six of them.
• 26:19
[laughs] Feeding him. [laughs] Feeding him as he's riding, basically. Yeah, it was cool. So on that, that 150 day, I was younger, and, and I was in pretty-- I was actually in really good shape that year.
• 26:29
'Cause you're in such terrible shape now, Jeremy. And, [laughs] and I, I lucked out and hooked up with Team Air Force, and Team Air Force- Oh, good draft...
• 26:38
used to have, they still do, but back then they had an amazing squad. Yeah. And they had a four-wide draft line, and I just got in the draft line and we just flew.
• 26:50
And I did the 150 miles in I think, I think I did it in 10 hou- like 10 hours. No shit. I mean- We were, we were flying... I was by myself. It was- They don't do pace line anymore. Yeah.
• 27:01
The last couple years they've been really broken out. Those big... Yeah, those big pace line.
• 27:04
But you could do, on that day, you could do the big pace line because when you were coming back on the loop, I mean, it wasn't busy.
• 27:12
You had, you, well, plus you had about a 30 mile an hour tailwind coming back, 'cause you fought that s- you had 70 miles of headwind and then you had, then what, your only relief was riding back into town and then realizing, "I gotta ride into that fucking wind again."
• 27:23
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. But yeah, 'cause when you, on the loop, I mean, the loop wasn't busy. Not many people did the 150, and by the time you got back on the normal route, you were so far behind it wasn't busy.
• 27:34
Yeah, well, I, what- So you, you could have a big draft line... I was so far behind that there was, like, no food. I did the last, I did at least the last 50, 60 miles with no stop.
• 27:41
Everything was closed by the time I got there. Yeah. Everything was gone by the time I got there. And then, and the worst part was I was the last one coming in, either. Oh, yeah.
• 27:47
There was people way behind me, too, so that would've been a miserable ride for those guys.
• 27:51
And that's even been the complaint now, not even on the 150, but in the recent rides with them shutting down the towns, is you have, I mean, the, the average age of RAGBRAI, and you notice it when you're out there, the average age of the riders keeps getting...
• 28:03
I mean, I'm getting older. [laughs] And the average age of the riders seems like it keeps going up and up and up, and people just aren't as fast as they used to be.
• 28:13
And you got a lot of people out on the road, and they're shutting these towns down, and they're not young. Uh, be- and be- Right... and because of that, because they're- Some ages...
• 28:20
shutting the towns down, is it, is it shooting the foot they're own... Are they not selling as many one-day passes then, too? They're still doing one-day passes.
• 28:27
But is, I wonder if they're selling as many, because that was always a huge thing.
• 28:30
Um- It's like you lived in Charles City and you were gonna take your kids and ride, and you got a one-day pass, and you would ride to, uh, most of those guys didn't go all the way because they're riding their, you know, shitty old Huffies and whatever they had, but they got out on RAGBRAI, and they got, they got to see part of it anyway.
• 28:45
And they would just go ride for a day. But if they're shutting the towns early, if those guys can't get to the
• 28:50
first town that's 20 miles away in time for it and it's shut down already, then they don't see the experience then. Yeah. So do they, do they gauge, like, is it shut down times, or do they just like, "Okay- They-...
• 29:02
this is starting to get fucking nutty"? No, they, they, they have a schedule they post. So if, if the- They shut down times... if the, you know, the majority of the group is,
• 29:11
you know, behind shutdown times, is that, do they- Nope. They, they set their- No, they don't care... times, don't they? Yeah, they just stick to their times.
• 29:16
And no, and the, and, and the only time, the only reason- That seems silly...
• 29:19
when I did it and they had the last town to shut down, the only reason I was in favor of it was really was for the state patrol, 'cause those poor bastards, there's- Oh, yeah...
• 29:27
I can't remember, but there's not very many of them. 15? That small, yeah. There's a small group of them, and they're on all the street corners. They're out there all day long in those hot, stinking uniforms. Mm-hmm.
• 29:37
And, you know, and so everybody's really nice to them and everybody h- appreciates them being there, but at the same time, I'll bet by Thursday they're pretty much sick of the whole thing.
• 29:43
Well, I just like, I'd go back to what Kayla said, like trying to get a water I mean, that sounds fucking dangerous.
• 29:48
Well, last year Team Jackhammer had a girl, she was six months pregnant, which, I don't know, I don't think I would be on RAGBRAI.
• 29:55
[laughs] But they were trying to get her, like, some substance, like, just some, a Gatorade or something.
• 30:00
Like, she was not doing so well one day, and the cop literally was shutting her down from going into a gas station. And, yeah, like, pregnant or- And that's what they use-... pregnant or not, that just-...
• 30:07
a primary, like- Yeah, that's bullshit... thing where they had to stop...
• 30:09
pregnant or not, that just sounds like a- And, and they're, and they're, and they're limiting the team buses where they can go and where they can't go now also. Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 30:15
I mean, I mean much more s- they've always done a little bit, but it, it's much more now than they used to be, right? Like, you could- Well, 'cause there's probably a lot more buses now too.
• 30:21
Well, Beaver I think hated teams, because when he was... I mean, he just left this last year. Right.
• 30:26
But when he was there, he would literally comment on, like, Facebook posts, and be like, "If you guys are gonna do off route parties, then you're not welcome back to RAGBRAI."
• 30:34
And like- Well, y- but y- the reason you're doing off route parties- It's his thing... is because he's wrecked the rest of it. Yeah.
• 30:38
[laughs] I mean, he was like, you would find a gravel road, and sit alongside the gravel road, and your teammates would come in there, and they would, you would have your food on, for your b- for the people on your team, and you'd have a beer if you wanted to.
• 30:48
And then you'd continue on. Well, they didn't like that, 'cause it was- Well, because they're not making money. Yeah. Well, well, there's a bit of that. But, you know, they still were...
• 30:53
This was like, this was more like an extra stop. So you went into town, you still, you still bought food there, you still- Oh, sure... you know. You got, you, you supported the place anyway.
• 31:03
So w- this is just, like, the, for the reasons that you're not getting anything now, and, and, you know, now they've... Back then you could get a little something.
• 31:10
You could have a sandwich and, and a beer, and then ride into town, and then really get some real food if you wanted to. It wasn't to make it longer, it was, it w- you were supporting your riders is what you were doing.
• 31:20
Yeah, granted, some of them were maybe making it a little bit rougher on them, but... Yeah, now they want the buses at, they have a designated meeting town. It seems like they don't want them out- Yeah...
• 31:32
kind of in the country. So they don't just, they just don't have the route that you're supposed to travel on, and then you can, you could jump off the route and go meet them anywhere.
• 31:38
The, the route just takes you back to- Well, is that, like, a parking thing? Is it a- Well, there's a little bit of that, because we wanna get back to...
• 31:45
You wanna get to, you do wanna get the bus to the, well, which is how the Cleavage Tour started, because we wanna get the bus to the finish so that you can get set up.
• 31:52
And w- and when we had a bus, we didn't have anything set up, so we would go into town early with the bus, and then just start looking around for a place that we could, that, you know, somebody would take eight, 10 tents, and some bodies, right?
• 32:02
And i- and for us it was mostly the girls needed, "Can the girls use your bathroom?" And we had a, we had an outdoor shower, so it's like, "The guys will stay out. Can the girls use your bathroom?
• 32:11
You know, br- uh, guys are fine." And then whoever drove the bus that day would ride backwards, and then you would go to back to the, to the town that the party, the town before you finished.
• 32:21
So you'd get a 10-mile ride in, and then you would wait for everybody to show up there, and then ride the group back to the- Oh, okay... to the, to the... This is before cell phones and all that kind of stuff.
• 32:29
But it was, it was a fun way to do it, you know. And you, and the person that drove the bus then got to get a little bit of a ride in. Maybe only 20, 30 miles is all, but it still was a ride. Mm-hmm.
• 32:37
And hang out and party in the town that usually was the best party, was the town before the finishing town. Yeah, the last town's always, like, the fun, the fun town. The finishing town or the town before?
• 32:48
The town before. Yeah, yeah. That's always the party town. That one's, the, the finishing town is too big, too, too many people, too hard to... Well, it's, gets...
• 33:01
In the finishing town, people are looking to take a shower, set up their sleeping. I mean- Yeah... they're, they're doing more than- So the, the starting and finishing town changes every year, is that what I, I gather?
• 33:11
Mm-hmm, the route is different every year. Okay. And, and the, as many times as they've done it, they've probably been through every town that it's going through, but they change the route every year.
• 33:18
It, it's, next w- will next year be a southern route? Mm. Is this considered a northern route this year? I would. Well, last year's a midway route technically. I would, I would consider- This year is northern...
• 33:29
this year a northern route. This is a northern route this year. Yeah, this is very northern. Yeah. I mean, Mason City, Charles City, that's very northern. Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 33:33
And you know, and the thing is, is Decorah's one of they always wanna stop, but they really didn't want- I'm so surprised it go, didn't go through Decorah this year. No, they can't, 'cause it's Nordic Fest.
• 33:41
And there's- Everybody was, like, so convinced- No... when we were talking about it earlier- The one time... Was it, uh, four years ago that it did stop in Decorah? I think it's longer than that. Uh, 2017.
• 33:52
Yeah, and it was, and it just doesn't work. 'Cause it went through Progress- But it did, it is-... so when they get to Decorah- It was. They get, they, they get there early enough.
• 33:57
If they get there ear- yeah, 'cause they stayed in Waukon. Yeah, we didn't stay in Decorah. Yeah. It's a pass-through. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was a pass-through town. But, but, but if it's- But, but we, but we stayed.
• 34:04
[laughs] We, we stayed in Decorah 'cause- Well, if you get there, if you get there early enough, 'cause Nor- We stayed at Ta- Stan's. You know Stan... yeah, Nordic Mess is just Thursday through Saturday I think.
• 34:14
So it's not, like, take up the whole time, but it's, it's basically the time when Nordic Fest is the busiest is when RAGBRAI's coming through. We've- It just doesn't work... we've ha- and it doesn't happen very often.
• 34:24
I mean, very, very, very not often. Very seldom. But every once in a while, like Nordic Fest and RAGBRAI, I think it's one of those years where, like, the last full week of July
• 34:36
is actually early, because the week after it is- Yep... is like- Oh, yeah... six of the seven days, so you actually have to have it the week before. Sure. 'Cause RAGBRAI's always the last full week of July. Right.
• 34:48
So every once in a while, RAGBRAI's kinda early because the last week of July is six days- The way it falls on the calendar... not the seven days. Yeah. Yep.
• 34:58
So I think every once in a while, those years we'll actually stay in Decorah, 'cause I think Nordic Fest'll be, like, the weekend after that. Oh, I see, yeah. Yeah. So every once in a great while we'll stay in Decorah.
• 35:10
'Cause I think I've stayed in Decorah twice where that was technically the actual overnight town.
• 35:17
I could believe that, because, you know, there's a lot of times, though, like, and there, you know, it's finishing in Lansing this year, and then I think the Decorah one always finishes in Lansing. Lansing sucks.
• 35:24
Does it really? It's pretty small. But it's such a pain to get out of there. Oh. And you get zero cell phone service, and like- Yeah, the cell phone service in Lansing is terrible. Yeah. And it, just to get to- If-...
• 35:34
Lansing, biking, well, getting there actually, once you get through all those huge climbs, getting there is fun, 'cause then it's all downhill. Sure.
• 35:40
But, like, the two last days are gonna suck again this year [laughs] 'cause it's like- Yeah, well, that's-... lots of climbing...
• 35:47
we, we were debating about doing the, m- um, to West Union and then just coming back up to Decorah from there. I mean, that was, that was our biggest... Oh, we did this so many times.
• 35:55
We would end in Wherever it was close by, we would just jump on the bus the, the day before. We, we would never ride to the end. We would just take and go. Mm-hmm.
• 36:02
'Cause, because of what you said, it's such a pain the ass to get back to Decorah from any place on the eastern border of Iowa because it's single, windy, and it's just, and it sucks, so- There's literally one road to get in and out of Lansing...
• 36:15
right. So we would avoid that.
• 36:16
We would just, like, we would [laughs] we'd always, like, go to Fort Atkins and, and then we would literally drink from Fort Atkins back to, like, open the bus door and hand a beer to a guy riding a bike and that kinda shit.
• 36:26
It was- That's- It was fun... the last time it ended in Lansing, it was a really short day. I don't, it wasn't very long, like 40, 45 miles. I think that was my first year. Yeah.
• 36:35
And then I, I dip the tire, and I grab my gear, which I always throw my st- On RAGBRAI, I always just put my stuff in my panniers. So [laughs] I, I, I grab my gear.
• 36:45
I put it on my bike, and I actually, I'd started riding, and I rode up to, uh, La Crescent. And then I had- I hadn't thought about that.
• 36:52
If you crossed over and then stayed- 'Cause, 'cause, 'cause Lansing to La Crescent isn't... A, it's not that far. B, it's flat 'cause you're following the Great River Road. Yep. And then you end up, and it's beautiful.
• 37:03
Mm-hmm. And you end up in La Crescent, and then [laughs] if someone's driving from Rochester over to La Crescent, it's just the interstate. Do you- Maybe we should do that.
• 37:12
Do you see many guy- [laughs] Do you see many guys that do that? I mean, they literally take two weeks off, and then they do, they ride back to their cars. Team Bad Boy. I was just gonna ask. They still do the...
• 37:20
I, I didn't know that- Those guys are- Are they still around? Yes. Yeah. Yes. And they are amazing. And they're- So Team Bad Boy- And they're like, and they're like your age... for people that don't know them- Oh, yeah.
• 37:27
No, no, no. We-... is they literally bring, like, a full bar... I've been like, I've teed this question up for about five minutes, like, so if you don't have a bus, then what?
• 37:35
So- Well, we- Well, well, Jeremy, you do it mostly self-supported, right? Yeah. 'Cause there's y- years where you've come down with the team that I ride with, but then- Well, we have our own vehicle though...
• 37:43
like Alex P, there's... Oh, okay. So you're somebody that still kinda ride- Yeah... or drives- We, we bring our-... the stuff. We- I'd sign up for that fucking job. Oh, yeah?
• 37:51
Well, you can go with these guys right now because they're looking for somebody to help, uh, uh, Brittany, um- Drive... yeah. Are we still looking for support? I don't know. Brittany posted something on Facebook.
• 37:59
[laughs] I would totally do support. No, you wouldn't. Please. Here's 30- Please do. Oh my God. No. Yeah. That would be so much fun. For, for what? So here's- Why would I not? Like, let, tell me more.
• 38:08
So here's, here's the thing, though. We've had so... 'Cause we, we always bring our own vehicle, just a small, like a pickup or a car, not, not, not a bus,
• 38:16
and we've had so many support drivers that'll drive for us that first year, and they see how much fun it is, and they're like, "The next year, I'm riding." Yeah. You mean- I mean, I'd be- Yeah.
• 38:25
I think that Team Bad Boys- I mean, I'm also, I'm also okay with that. I'm okay with fun. Well- [laughs] Landon, Landon needs somebody- Oh, you mean fun... to help work with Brittany. Brittany is so much fun.
• 38:35
I thought Dusty was, or is- Oh, I would... Oh, I don't know. She was just talking about that. She was looking for somebody to help. I'm not driving that piece of shit fucking bus. No, you, Jamie would rock with you.
• 38:42
They have a new bus. Oh. A new bus. Yeah. Yeah, it's got less rust and more green. If you're with Brittany- [laughs]... Jamie does the bus. But- Jamie s- Is Jamie driving this year?
• 38:51
[laughs] [laughs] Oh, this podcast just turned into an hour long because- Oh, boy... this is gonna be... This was the shit I was- I don't wanna talk about that... come on.
• 38:59
So, so grab me- The whole reason I wanted to do this is so I could hear you guys bitch. Grab me another beer. Yeah. But, uh, yeah, I'm not driving that fucking piece of shit. On that note.
• 39:07
[can opening] That was another good one. Ronnie, you suck at that. So, so quickly, since we were talking about Decorah,
• 39:14
the last time, maybe it was two times ago, where Decorah was act- was actually the, the, the overnight stop, the town. Yep. It was, that was the hottest RAGBRAI- Yes... like I have ever been on.
• 39:27
And we, and our bus was- It was so hot that year... we didn't go any farther than Decorah, so once we got there, we just stayed. And Sue came down, and I've never seen a town full of...
• 39:36
You know, ever seen, like, an apocalypse movie where people just go crazy- [laughs]... and are fucking bitchy and killing each other? That's pretty much Decorah that night. It was- Ugh...
• 39:45
I mean- It was too fucking hot to do anything. It was- Any restaurant or bar you went into, the hair cond- the hair con- air conditioning couldn't handle it. [laughs] It w- it was horrible.
• 39:53
It was, it was like 10, 11 o'clock at night, and I'm in the beer garden, and it's just ungodly hot, and I had a friend that wasn't in our group. He was in another group.
• 40:04
And, uh, I ran into him in the beer garden, and he's standing in the beer garden, and he had a beer in one hand and a glass of water in the other, and he was just alternating. Yep. It was horrible.
• 40:14
And just wet, just pouring down his face. It was so bad. And we stayed at Deke's house, and he doesn't have fucking air conditioning. [laughs] So that was horrible. Sue was like, "I'm not staying here. We gotta..."
• 40:24
We, she drove back to Ro- she drove me back to Rochester that night. It's like, "No, I'm not doing this." Yeah. So we, we were- I don't blame you...
• 40:29
we were staying at Stan's house, and we're sleeping on the floor, and we're all sound asleep, and it's like 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, and it sounded like someone outside shot a shotgun. Like, boom. You guys...
• 40:40
Wait, you guys, you guys stayed at Stan's house that year? Yeah, we stayed... I've stayed at Stan's hou- Did- Well, now he's sold, he's sold that house. Did, did...
• 40:46
Yeah, but did you see, we slept in Marty Grimm's front yard that night. Right. Come to think of it, we didn't, we didn't go home. We didn't stay at Deke's house. That was a different one.
• 40:54
We stayed [laughs] there was, like, eight of us just sleeping on the boulevard in Stanf- Oh, geez... Stan's house. [laughs] We stayed at- Or Stan, uh, uh, Marty Grimm's house.
• 41:02
And we stayed at Stan's, and then in the middle of the night, there sounds like a shotgun shot. Boom. Yep. I remember that. We all wake, we all wake up, and we're like...
• 41:10
And then you notice 'cause there's, the air conditioner's running. There's fans running. And you notice it's silent. And you're like, "Uh, the transformer blew." Oh, God. [laughs] Oh, no.
• 41:19
[laughs] Right outsi- I was just thinking that. Was it right outside, was it right outside Stan's house? Oh, God. Yeah. 'Cause we were, yeah, we were, we were not that... I didn't even know you then.
• 41:26
That's hilarious 'cause we were not that far from that house. Oh, Jesus. And then it just- The whole substation exploded... and then you can just feel it start getting hotter. Oh, God.
• 41:33
[laughs] Speaking of which, we're gonna cut this off in about 20 minutes 'cause it's getting warm in here. No. No? There's no time limit on this one. Oh, are you fucking kidding me? There's too much to cover. Yeah.
• 41:41
It's not that warm. No. No, no, no. He's been doing it since, like, the se- eight- '70s, '80s. '84. Yeah, yeah, but- Yeah But I've heard all these stories. I have not. Yeah. And nor have- And he has not...
• 41:51
nor have all four listeners. Yeah. [laughs] The, the, the, the same four listeners heard the same stories last year. Okay. Okay. Wait, wait. I was trying to segue into something, you fucktard.
• 41:59
Now I gotta start all over again. [laughs] God. I was gonna make a comment- Wait... on the hot days. Okay, wait... like you guys talking about it, apocalyptic- Go ahead and talk about the hot days- And-...
• 42:06
'cause we have to do a commercial... no. A commercial? We have to do a commercial. Yeah. We have to do a commercial. I thought we didn't like commercializing. We don't, but- You're so corporate, Roger. Well, there's...
• 42:14
No. No, there's no- [laughs] There's no- Is it a, is it a Trek commercial? Oh my God. No, no. Oh my God. [laughs] It's from... It's this- It's an e-bike commercial... it's an e-bike commercial. Yeah. No.
• 42:23
[laughs] It's for Junk be Gone, because Grisberg has loneliness and air conditioners, so we're not dying in here tonight. So there are no free ads, but this one is- This one is a freebie because- Okay.
• 42:31
I was gonna say, the positive of hot days is usually people are just, like, stripping everything down. So you guys talk about the angry apocalyptic people, and I am not with those people.
• 42:40
I, I- She's talking about the neckbeards... I- I'm, like, in the pond skinny dipping with all the fun people. Let's fucking go. You guys are in the wrong group. All right. We're, we're going. I'm ordering.
• 42:48
Oh, so, so, so, have you, have you ever rode with Team Naked? Do they still do that? That's a team- No... that's... Oh, yeah- I haven't, I haven't seen-... I have been looking for a new team here...
• 42:55
I haven't seen- No, no. Team Naked was a thing, and you had a ride with- It was... you, you had to ride with the Team Naked for a mile. I'm not sure you wanna see me naked, but I'm- No, no, no, no...
• 43:04
also interested in this team. [laughs] But the, but when I got to know the team... Well, the, the one year I fixed their bikes from, so the next year we rode, we, they, we were friends with those guys, right?
• 43:12
And they've got this big-boobed blonde that's riding with them. And of course, every fucking guy in RAGBRAI is wa- waiting to find out when she's gonna ride naked, right? [laughs] And they never caught her. So we're...
• 43:22
I- Is it a designated mile, or like you can- It, no, it's... But, but it's-... basically take your time... but it's only with the team. So, and it... but it has to be on the road also, I think, if I remember right.
• 43:29
But that's what it was, is they did this big thing. They got... They're on top of a building, you know, kinda like old western buildings are like this, you know. Yeah.
• 43:35
And they're standing up there, and she's up there, and they basically got a microphone and said, "Look, you guys have been waiting to see her tits for a week now, so she's decided to give in.
• 43:45
So she's got a halter top on," and she drops down like she's, she goes kind of be- below the, the eave, and she goes like to take off. And the guy stands up with a fucking fire hose and just hits the crowd.
• 43:54
[laughs] [laughs] And she stands up with her top on and waves and walks away. [laughs] It was fantastic. That's awesome.
• 44:01
There is a team that does have, like, a fire truck, and like, I've been on day zeros where they, like, go by at, like, the day zero party, and they, like, douse everybody with their fire hose. So there's a lot of fun.
• 44:13
So another fun team, when we were talking about pacelines, Team Dodge. I haven't seen them the last couple years. Mm. But they ride fat bikes, and those guys- Really?... are...
• 44:22
Like, I, like, hail to Team Dodge, 'cause they... Like, I can't even keep up with them in a paceline, and they're riding fat bikes. And you just hear them coming up. It's just like... Yeah. The...
• 44:34
We cheated- Like monster trucks on pavement... we cheated the one year. We rode our, we rode our racing mountain bikes, but we took everything off and put one-inch tires on them [clears throat] and road gears on.
• 44:44
[laughs] So it looked like a mountain bike, but that was it. It looked like an anorexic mountain bike, basically. [laughs] And we got passed by a draft line of roadies, and we're going, "Fuck these guys." And we...
• 44:53
So here comes a, about a line of mountain bikes go blowing by them, and they're like, "What the fuck?" [laughs] There is even, there's unicyclists that do it. Yeah. The whole route. There's- Rol- rollerbladers...
• 45:04
rollerbladers. There was a, a runner I saw a couple years- Yeah. Remember the-... where she was, like, hauling, was it her son or her brother? I don't remember the story.
• 45:12
Um- There used to be a guy on a, the bone shaker with the big front- Yep... the big front wheel. He wouldn't ride the whole thing, though. He'd just do bits and pieces. Yeah, I think he did. Right.
• 45:18
Like, he wouldn't do the... What, what about the, uh... Do you remember the guy, it was the southern route, that pulled his ca- his canoe behind him? Oh. [laughs] Yeah.
• 45:25
Remember the guy that had the, like, the recumbent bike, and then he had a sail? Remember him? Oh, yeah. Genius.
• 45:30
Well, so then the other one wa- that was a cool one, was there was a guy that was riding on a, on a crank recumbent, and his, there was always somebody with him, and it was his, and it was strange.
• 45:37
Oh, he had a push me pull. He... Well, yeah.
• 45:39
Well, and then because he got so bad that he couldn't ride anymore, so then his daughters would take turns putting their bike on and making sure he did, I don't know, he probably did what?
• 45:45
Four more years of RAGBRAI that way. Well, there wa- At least... there was another guy that had a recumbent, and it, it was kind of a unique one where he was, it almost looked more like a wheelchair.
• 45:56
That it was a recumbent bike- Yep. Right... and he had a hand pedal, and then he had this big stick on the side of it, and there was a big sign, and it said, "Push me pull." Yes. Oh, no, I never saw that one.
• 46:06
And you, and you would come up beside him, and you would say, "Hey, I'm gonna give you a push." And he's like, "All right." Well, this was, this was like- And then you would push him...
• 46:13
the guy who was, the guy and his two daughters, and they, you would- That's my kinda guy... you would take the front wheel off your bike and put it on the back end of his setup, which was similar to that.
• 46:20
[clears throat] And then you would just, you know, ride with him, and he could hand pedal along with you and assist him. We took turns riding with him just to give those guys a break.
• 46:28
Well, for a while, they had, like, Hear No Evil, See No Evil, and they rode tandems, and the guy in front was deaf, and the guy in the back was blind. [laughs] That's fucking awesome.
• 46:39
[laughs] I still remember my second year, Jeremy, where I was, like, struggling on this big hill, and all of a sudden, you just come, I just feel this, like, hand just, like, pushing me behind.
• 46:49
I didn't even know that Jeremy was in the vicinity. [laughs] And all of a sudden, I'm just like- And, and, and it all-... flash this saw it. Yes. I look over. I'm like, "It's Jeremy. Oh my God."
• 46:57
[laughs] [laughs] She thought she was gonna get lucky instead it's Jeremy. [laughs] Oh, who's this hunk? No.
• 47:03
But it, but, but there, there's some truth that, that a hand on the back, when you're riding something and somebody's struggling, you put their hand on the back up a hill, you can't believe what a difference that makes.
• 47:11
And you're not really pushing that much. That takes, honestly, that's a lot of skill, though, in my mind, 'cause I don't really trust myself to try to push somebody up a hill. Oh, no, it's...
• 47:18
You don't, you don't really push. You just, you just maintain and ride along with them. Oh, okay. And it's amazing what, what a break it gives them. It's just, it's, uh- For-...
• 47:25
one of the dumbest things I've ever thought that would actually... I was like, "That looks stupid." And then when you do it to somebody, it's like, "This is amazing."
• 47:31
For, for a couple years, Team Colgate, and they were kind of a semi-pro cycling team. They went on RAGBRAI, and they had, like, four or five guys.
• 47:42
And going up these huge hills, they would be, like, at the bottom of the hill, and they're like, "Anybody need a push?" Really? And people would, like, raise their hands.
• 47:52
And guys from the team- Would like ride up to him and start pushing us. [laughs] So, it was- Wow... it was great. So, I, I- It was so funny to watch- We- 'cause they were such good riders You know what we did on hills?
• 48:01
That's awesome. [laughs] Only this one time, and I can't remember the whole... I can't remember... There was a reason we did it. Or we didn't re- There was a reason we did.
• 48:09
The reason the person did it was 'cause they were pissed off at the RAGBRAI people. And so literally there's this giant downhill and a big climb on the other end of it, and we started yelling, "Tacks."
• 48:20
And so everybody'd get off and walk their bike down to the bottom of the hill, and then they had to ride up the hill.
• 48:23
[laughs] That was, it was, that was a really nasty day, but I c- I can't remember the re- There was a reason behind it. I don't remember what it was, but it was like, that was a really...
• 48:32
No, I think I was like, "That was a really fucking nasty thing to do," but it was really funny. There has been a few years where people actually- I love bombing down hills-... screamed tacks...
• 48:38
so I don't appreciate- See-... the people that are going up the fucking hill and getting in my way. [laughs] No. No, no, no.
• 48:44
We would, w- at the top of the hill we were yelling, "Tacks," so people would get off their bike and walk so they wouldn't get a flat. Oh. And then we'd get to the bottom of the hill, they could ride.
• 48:52
I was not hearing you correctly. It's k- You probably- I'm, I'm probably safer that way... but I still don't appreciate it. You, you ruined that one. [laughs] I- Way to go, Caleb... what- [laughs] Yeah, Cale? Yeah.
• 49:00
One year riding into Guttenberg, there's a huge downhill into Guttenberg, and I, back th- I had a bike com- I don't use bike computers anymore. I always found myself looking at them too much, so I just quit using them.
• 49:12
But back then I had a bike computer, and I'm going down the hill into Guttenberg, and I'm looking at my computer, and I'm like, "Ah, I'm gonna get as fast as I can," and I'm tucked down, I'm going as fast as I can, and I got up to 55.
• 49:25
Holy. Holy shit. And I'm just like, "Oh, I'm going so fast," and all of a sudden this tandem just flies by me. [laughs] Yes. It's like, kinda- Welcome to my world. Blow your doors off...
• 49:35
it had, it had to be going, it had to be going 60, 65 miles an hour. It was just- Wow... wow. That's impressive. I haven't- The, the biggest hill around here I can get going even close to that fast is the Genoa Hill.
• 49:48
I think Sue- You can get- I think Sue and I were doing f- I think I started braking at 50 going down that. It was only down, we've only done it that fast once. Well, by my house- But on a tandem?...
• 49:56
I've done over 40 on. On a tandem, yeah. Yeah. Wait, well, Sue's with me. [laughs] You think, you think, you think we were riding 50 miles an hour with Sue on a regular bike [laughs] with me? That's...
• 50:05
[laughs] What the hell's wrong with you? [laughs] You gotta have a, you gotta have a decent bike going that fast or else you're, you kinda- I-... get that road wobble. Oh, oh. The old speed wobbles. Yeah.
• 50:15
Well- The speed wobbles... um- That's not good... we, you know, talked about that kind of stuff. If you're at any- when it runs into the cra- cement cracks. Oh. We came up on one guy- I've seen some nasty- Yeah...
• 50:25
scary crashes. We came up on a guy that died. Every time I hear an ambulance on the route, like I get instant chills because- Especially-... when they put on their lights and sirens you know it's not good. Yeah.
• 50:33
Hey, isn't that what you did? What you say? You went over the bars. Was that a couple years ago? Down here, yeah. Yep. Yeah, but imagine these guys are like on a, on an open road, and- Just hauling ass...
• 50:43
and, and there, there's stretches of it that, that pavements, they're, they're big, um, square chunks. I mean, they're like, I don't know, 30 feet by whatever the width is.
• 50:52
You know, and, and the cracks are, crap, the cracks are two, three inches wide. Yeah.
• 50:56
You know, and you get the guys on little bikes, and they get just the wrong spot, and they're trying to pass somebody, and all of a sudden they get caught in it, and they're- Right... fricking done. Jesus.
• 51:02
RAGBRAI and the counties I think really do try to do a good job of the cracks in the road, like kinda s- sealing them and stuff. Yep. But the one crack they can't really do anything when, with is the one in the middle.
• 51:16
Right, right. Like they can't seal that one. That's true. I think that's the- That's where I've seen nasty crashes... I think that's where the guy went down that we were with, yeah. Is getting stuck in there.
• 51:20
And you'll, and you'll see some nasty- [laughs]... like people get stuck in there. What? Remember the town? I don't remember what... It was w- that really super hot year that we were riding on.
• 51:29
And, [laughs] and the, they were trying to help. The town was...
• 51:33
The road into town was this nice, brandly-new pave- or not maybe new pave, but, um, nicely paved road, and it was full of flags all the way in, and they went and put... So there was no cracks at all.
• 51:43
They filled all the cracks with tar. And the tar was so fucking hot it was popping tires. [laughs] Oh. And they, and they fell to... And there's like no mechanics in town, the town, 'cause it's just a tiny little town.
• 51:54
We're basically riding through. I don't even know if there was a bar there. [laughs] And it was just like, oh, you poor... And, and you, and you heard it, psst, and it's like, "Oh, fuck, there goes another one."
• 52:03
It was bad. That's where a team air force- Yeah... they'll save you.
• 52:06
[laughs] One, one of those years on RAGBRAI was so hot in that I was out, like I was getting off my bike, and I kinda pulled to the side of the road, and I put my f- took my foot out, and I put my foot down, but I happened to step like on the tar or the crack, and I went to g- start walking.
• 52:23
And my foot was just like stuck. [laughs] Oh, my God. Like I had to like pull my shoe away from the tar.
• 52:30
So- All that cool shit you said earlier, I'm like, I'm like, "Yeah, I'm fucking in," and then you start- [laughs]... saying shit like that, I'm like, "Oh." To be fair, I've never been stuck in tar. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 52:37
What, it's not even about the tar. It's like- Well, it's okay... it's so fucking hot... so, so now- Yeah... now, now, then, then, then there's- Let's get the chubby guy out- Then-... in the fucking heat.
• 52:44
[laughs] Let's go. Then there's the other days where it rains for the whole RAGBRAI. I'm okay with that. Oh, doing that. I don't know. I have been riding six years and only been caught in one day of storm.
• 52:53
Oh, I've been, I've been riding before where I'm riding along and I can hear something, and I look behind me, and I can see hail. Oh, fuck. Yeah. But, but I'm- I have raced that...
• 53:03
but I'm not, but I'm not in it, so I like, I start speeding up, going like, "I'm gonna outride the hail." [laughs] That's kind of fun. We- You'd be surprised how fast you can- Yeah...
• 53:11
when you're trying to beat a crazy storm. We did one, I don't remember what... I, I... Must've been- That's kind of a cool like- I don't know if we were rid- We must've been-... I'll outride the hail...
• 53:18
we must've been still riding for Trek at the time, but we w- we stopped in a new town to have a pancake breakfast, and it's been raining all week, right? What?
• 53:25
We stopped in a new town to have a pancake breakf- breakfast. That's usually true. [laughs] Oh, fuck. Breakfast. Jesus. One more time. Say it again. One more time. Say it again. One more time. A pan- a pancake breakfast.
• 53:33
There we go. There you go. [laughs] There it is. And, uh- Was it Mr. Pancake or was it Chris Cakes? No, it was, it was a farm. Oh. So we stopped in a farm. And then there's, all of us are standing on the...
• 53:43
And everybody's been working on bikes all day long, and Terry Hovland goes, "Finish eating, but don't look down." So everybody finishes eating. They go, "Now look at your plate."
• 53:51
You know, and we're standing, we're literally standing in the rain eating.
• 53:54
And he looked down and our gloves and our hands are so greasy that you're literally [laughs] eating bicycle chain grease was just soaked into your pancakes and everything. [laughs] It was just disgusting.
• 54:03
So- And he goes, "Eh, what the hell," just keeps eating. [laughs] All right. You will be quickly humbled on RAGBRAI too. Oh, I'm- So here's the thing- The best showers... so we've got five minutes.
• 54:13
So have we convinced you to go with us? [sighs] 'Cause this was kinda my evil idea. Are you gonna go with us- I'm waffling right now. Like- Waffling... I'm back and forth. Isn't that a thing?
• 54:21
Wasn't that like a thing at- So-... presidential election thing? So here's- Like, "Oh, he's waffling." [laughs] So here's the thing, I've done it since '84. I, I went through college, I still kept going.
• 54:31
But I just met you, and you're definitely not normal. [laughs] Yeah, I'll give you that. None of these people- I'm so like... are normal.
• 54:37
And I, and I, and I got- I was gonna say [laughs] I got- I've done it six years in a row... Kayla, not normal. [laughs] Fuck you. Fuck you, you are definitely not normal. We, we know, we know Ron's not normal.
• 54:44
We know that Chewy's not normal. [laughs] Fuck. But I get out of college, I get a job, I keep going. I get married, I keep going. I have kids- And that's the reason to go... I keep going.
• 54:56
It's a week away from the family My, my daughter was born July 9th. Her birthday's Saturday, she'll be 16. She was born July 9th. Happy birthday. I still went on RAGBRAI that year. All right.
• 55:08
[laughs] And for training my first RAGBRAI, I didn't even buy a road bike until literally the week before my first RAGBRAI. Well, haven't you- I still did it. You, I told you, I went right- Wait, what?
• 55:17
Is this a convince fucking Brad to go- Really?... like podcast? Well- He's convincing... because, because, no, no, because here's the first step. We have to convince you to go. Oh.
• 55:26
The second step is what are we gonna do? Wait. Because we're not riding with y- Team Rotor. Are you... Wait, you're going? I'll go with you. If you go, I'll fucking go. All right.
• 55:34
'Cause- So if I were you guys, I would drive to Mason City, 'cause right on the interstate, easy to get to. No, we already talked about this. That doesn't work. Get back to...
• 55:42
So I don't, I mean, I, I definitely won't survive the whole thing. Are you gonna go this year, you mean? You talking to me? Yes, you. No, I was talking to Kayla. I'm gonna go- What the fuck is that?...
• 55:51
every year, but next year I might not be with Rotor. So I, I, if I were you guys and you wanted to ride a day or two, I would drive to Mason City and then ride a day or two, and then- Oh, fuck.
• 56:02
Mason City, oh yeah, Mason City's a short day. It's 45 miles from Mason City to Charles City, right? Chuck, Chuck Town. It's not Charles City. It's Chuck Town. It's Chuck Town? Yeah, it's fucking Chuck Town.
• 56:11
[laughs] What? Don't... Get, get your Iowa lingo in this fucking podcast. So can I tell you my story about Chuck Town? I am from Iowa, and we've never called it Chuck Town, so.
• 56:17
All right, you just ruined everything cool that Jeremy just said. [laughs] Fucking figure it out. It's Chuck Town. [laughs] Fucking figure it out, Abe. It's fine.
• 56:24
I know, I know people from Chuck Town, and they call it Chuck Town. So the reason that, the reason that we weren't gonna do Chuck Town is because it seems like a waste of time to drive,
• 56:35
like go Mason City to Chuck Town is 45 miles. Chuck Town. [laughs] It's Chuck Town. But you go through Marble Rock, so it's not a bad idea. Well, what is the, what's the next day?
• 56:42
But it's, but it's like, it's like 100- Is the next day the- It's like 115 mile, uh, mile drive to go fucking ride 45. It just doesn't seem- So what's the, so what's- Why wouldn't you-... after Chuck Town?
• 56:51
Is it West Union?... get somebody not driving? Because it, because everybody has to be back, everybody has to be back to Decorah Thursday for, um, Nordic Fest. That, that, I mean, it's gonna, I demonstrate this back.
• 57:01
That's- What's so fucking cool about Nordic Fest? Absolutely nothing. [laughs] All right. I fucking hate it, but you know what?
• 57:06
Let, let, let's- I live in Decorah now, so I have to go there and sell and make, um, what is it? Lefse? Yeah, I gotta do lefse. Oh, what? I can, we can make- All right. No. I make bomb ass lefse- Somebody-...
• 57:16
so we can bring some crap and do all that before hand... somebody make me some fucking lefse. What's, what, and then- I got you... and then, and then- I appreciate you...
• 57:21
and then- What's the fish shit that no one wants to eat? Lu- lu- Lutefisk... lutefisk. No, that's gross, so you haven't. Yeah, nobody fucking eats lefse. But, but do we... Yeah.
• 57:27
[laughs] And, and actually Nor- Christian, you can snort that... Norwegian food is really g- is almost as bad as- [laughs] You just do That's how slimy it is. Probably.
• 57:33
[laughs] But then, and then they also have to run the beer gardens on Saturday, so I'm kind, we're kinda out for this y- this year. But we could do Mason City to Charles City. That's 45 miles.
• 57:41
So I'll start training for next year. 47, no, no. Yeah. You don't need- Wait... to train. We've already established that. No, no, no. Like when is this? Uh, let's see. Day f- RAGBRAI is this last weekend in July.
• 57:52
Day five. So day five is- Oh... um, it's, uh, it's- Yeah, take longer so I can think of an excuse not to go. [laughs] Well, it doesn't- We also talked about being sore. It doesn't, it doesn't- I would do that for sure.
• 58:04
You could do it. I would definitely do that. Wait a second. It starts- Is this- It starts on the 23rd of July and ends on the 30th.
• 58:11
So you're s- Is this, is this one of those where you- So you're 28th, 20- you're like 28th, 29th? Look at a calendar. Is this one of those weird- It starts the 23rd. Oh, the day five. Well, here's the thing, though.
• 58:19
Here's the thing, though. No, the 24th is day one. That doesn't work in going this year because, because then I'm stuck with him- 24th... and you guys would be out riding with your friend. Stuck with me? 28th.
• 58:27
You heard me. No, you are my friend. [laughs] I know that, but- I will bail on everybody to ride with you... will you really? Yeah. So you'll do that. What about you, Jeremy?
• 58:35
We go, actually Jeremy, uh, is Mike gonna be there? Mikey? Yeah. Mikey. I think he, he's riding the second half of the week. So he would be there then. You s- But I'll be with Bradley. I mean, you know him like longer.
• 58:47
Well, Bradley didn't show up tonight, so fuck him. Last year on RAGBRAI- That's not nice... here, we got two minutes. Make this quick... I was biking behind this guy that had this luxurious mullet, okay?
• 58:56
Oh, and it was Bradley. And it was Bradley. [laughs] Was it really? Yeah. [laughs] Brad, Brad- And I'm like, "God, that's almost as good as Bradley's mullet."... there is no such thing as a luxurious mullet. Oh, fuck.
• 59:05
It, that- Bradley had the mullet to end all mullets last year... I, I, there is a, there is a glorious mullet. [laughs] But I feel like it- It was beautiful... you- It was like flowing. That lettuce in the wind, bro.
• 59:13
It was- You're doing the mullet- It was naturally curly. You're doing the- [laughs] And he had the handlebar mustache. Yes. I should've stopped this podcast an hour ago. But you're doing the mullet- No.
• 59:21
Like never starting it... we're never stopping. Yeah, no. You're, you're doing the mullet a disservice- We are d- we are done in a couple minutes 'cause-... by calling it luxurious. Well, there is that It's glorious.
• 59:30
It's beautiful. You can- Does Shoresy have a mullet? Yeah. Oh, yeah. No, he doesn't. He's, he's shaved. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [clears throat] Have you seen anybody new? All right, so, so [sighs] we'll do another podcast.
• 59:44
We've just cut this off. We've got... Yes, we gotta cut this off because otherwise Greg will never post it. All right, we'll be back next week, I guess. Uh, maybe, unless I g- I can get Matthew.
• 59:50
How many minutes in are we, really? [laughs] An hour. That, we've done just as bad- I know... on the Shitshow Podcast, so. Yeah. And, and, and- Yeah... did we ever get those posted? No. No. Yeah, we did.
• 59:59
The Shitshow- The Shitshow Podcast was- The Shitshow Podcast was not an hour You couldn't keep fucking lungs a- a- He did like to-... awake for that an hour [laughs]
• 1:00:07
I don't think any of mine have ever been posted, so sorry about your luck, guys. Oh, [laughs] No. Were you here when we did the other sidewalk one?
• 1:00:12
No, because we did the ch- last Chuck one we did was too long, and he's really struggling with it, so I wanna keep it...
• 1:00:17
So anyway, um, we will do this again, maybe closer to RAGBRAI, and then that way we can let everybody know if the four people that do listen, the, if- RAGBRAI is literally in, like, two weeks, just so you know.
• 1:00:25
If, uh, that's what I'm saying. What? Oh, it is July, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. I just finished hockey practice. I have no sense of time. Goddammit. So we're not, so, so in other words, I may... Here's what we're gonna do.
• 1:00:35
We could maybe do- I'm going to- We could do a post-BRAI. We, well, we can do it. Here's what we'll do. We'll call in to Greg's show. If I can convince you to go do just the ride from Mason City to- Chuck Town...
• 1:00:46
to Chuck Town- [laughs] Chuck Town... and I will find, you and I will go do that, and then we will hook up with these guys, and then we'll just find some poor soul to drive us back to Decorah.
• 1:00:53
So you need to take those two days off. You should talk Lee into it. I almost had him talking into coming and getting me so I could go to Nordic Fest. Oh, fuck, he'll come with you in a heartbeat. What are those days?
• 1:01:03
Um, it, well, I don't know what days, uh, that last is. Probably the 28th. Mm. So is that a Wednesday? That's a Thursday. So a Wednesday. So what, it's the day before that, so it's the 27th. To be, to be determined.
• 1:01:20
[laughs] Okay. TBD. If nothing else- TBD... if nothing else, we'll do, we'll do an update, and then just throw it on Greg's podcast. Oh, geez. Which is something we've talked about doing it anyway.
• 1:01:30
Besides that, or, or if I can get Matt to do the, um, electric bike one because that was supposed to happen last weekend. Are you getting an e-bike, Ron? No. Yes, yes, he is. No, no, I'm not getting an e-bike.
• 1:01:42
  You're getting an e-bike? No. He's getting a carbon e-bike. No, I'm gonna have- Ooh, a carbon e-bike... I'm gonna have a face-to-face- Is it a Trek? I'm getting, I'm having a face-to-face- [laughs] Oh, God...
• 1:01:49
discussion argument with a guy that has a gravel road e-bike, um, a- and it's face-to-face. We're gonna argue. A gravel e-bike? Yeah. Why? Uh, he'll explain why when he talks about it. Probably- Is he 74 years old?
• 1:02:01
No, he's younger than me. Does he have a heart condition? I know weird... No, the worst part is this is making me ride faster, and I'm not liking this a bit. He eats Cheerios.
• 1:02:07
I've actually b- I get 60 miles already in this week. I'm going out riding hills by myself. We- This is, I'm turning, uh, d- I hate it. I haven't gotten a message from you asking me to go ride.
• 1:02:16
Of course, no, because I asked Kayla instead, and she doesn't ride with me, so frigging nobody wants to ride with me, so- Oh, well, just today. [laughs] I'll ride with you. Oh, I can't believe you said that. All right.
• 1:02:25
I can plan things. We're out of here. Love you. Yes, thank you, everybody. Get out of here. Thank you, everybody. Thanks, Ron. Talk to you later. Okay, bye. Yep, bye.
• 1:02:32
