- 0:02Each part of the being has its own form of endurance.
- 0:06Endurance is essential for any true and lasting development.
- 0:10Change tends to take place mostly incrementally.
- 0:15When it comes more rapidly, it is usually accompanied by major
- 0:18disruptions to the status quo. In either case, one form of
- 0:23endurance or another is required.
- 0:27Physical endurance is the ability to withstand pressure on
- 0:31the physical body and continue on.
- 0:33This is seen in sports, exploration activities and
- 0:38adventure challenges such as climbing mountains or
- 0:42undertaking marathon races or triathlon.
- 0:46Vital endurance includes the power to remain positive and
- 0:50confident in the face of opposition and apparent
- 0:53setbacks. Mental endurance implies that
- 0:56the mind remains firm and without doubt about the results
- 1:00even when everything looks bleak.
- 1:03Despair, depression, and gloom are signs of a lack of
- 1:08endurance. We tend not to understand the
- 1:12way nature develops and evolves and the time frame needed to
- 1:16accomplish these changes. Endurance implies staying the
- 1:20course despite immediate appearances.
- 1:24For example, Sri Aurobindo in his epic poem Savitri, a legend
- 1:30and a symbol, has the following passage.
- 1:34Quote. When darkness deepened,
- 1:37strangling the earth's breast, And man's corporeal mind is the
- 1:42only lamp. As the thief's in the night
- 1:45shall be the covert tread of one who steps unseen into his house.
- 1:52End Quote When all around us is darkness, defeat, suffering,
- 1:59death and pain, the need for utmost endurance is required.
- 2:06As the proverb says, it is always darkest before the dawn,
- 2:13the mother notes. Quote Let endurance be your
- 2:17watchword. Teach the life force in you,
- 2:20your vital being, not to complain, but to put up with all
- 2:25the conditions necessary for great achievement.
- 2:28The body is a very enduring servant.
- 2:31It bears the stress of circumstance tamely, like a
- 2:34beast of burden. It is the vital being that is
- 2:37always grumbling and uneasy. The slavery and torture to which
- 2:42it subjects the physical is almost incalculable.
- 2:46How it twists and deforms the poor body to its own fads and
- 2:50fancies, irrationally demanding that everything should be shaped
- 2:54according to its whimsicality. But the very essence of
- 2:58endurance is that the vital should learn to give up its
- 3:01capricious likes and dislikes and preserve an equanimity in
- 3:06the midst of the most trying conditions.
- 3:09When you are treated roughly by somebody, or you lack something
- 3:13which would relieve your discomfort, you must keep up
- 3:17cheerfully. Instead of letting yourself be
- 3:19disturbed, let nothing ruffle you the least bit.
- 3:24And whenever the vital tends to air its petty grievances with
- 3:27pompous exaggeration, just stop to consider how very happy you
- 3:32are compared to so many in this world.
- 3:36Reflect for a moment on what the soldiers who fought in the last
- 3:39war had to go through. If you had to bear such
- 3:43hardships, you would realize the utter silliness of your
- 3:46dissatisfactions. And yet, I do not wish you to
- 3:50court difficulties. What I want is simply that you
- 3:55should learn to endure the little insignificant troubles of
- 3:58your life. Nothing great is ever
- 4:02accomplished without endurance. If you study the lives of great
- 4:06men, you will see how they set themselves like Flint against
- 4:09the weaknesses of the vital. Even today, the true meaning of
- 4:14our civilization is the mastery of the physical through
- 4:17endurance in the vital. The spirit of sport and of
- 4:21adventure and the dauntless facing of odds, which is evident
- 4:25in all fields of life, are part of this ideal of endurance.
- 4:31In science itself. Progress depends on the
- 4:34countless difficult tests and trials which precede
- 4:37achievement. What you must do is to give your
- 4:41vital a good beating as soon as it protests, for when the when
- 4:46the physical is concerned, there is reason to be considerate and
- 4:51to take precautions. But with the vital, the only
- 4:54method is a sound kicking. Kick your vital the moment it
- 4:58complaints, because there's no other way of getting out of the
- 5:01petty consciousness which attaches so much importance to
- 5:06creature comforts and social amenities, instead of asking for
- 5:10the light and the truth. End Quote.
