- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it is the 19th of
- 0:16May, and it is a whole new world opening up to us as we have
- 0:21finished reading through the book of Joshua.
- 0:23And now, yes, friends, we are opening back up into the New
- 0:27Testament, into the crackerjack, exciting roller coaster ride of
- 0:33the book of Acts. Yes, this is the story of God
- 0:37growing his church from this handful of ragtag men and women
- 0:42terrified for their lives, and then as Jesus instructs them to
- 0:47share and grow this church in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in
- 0:52Samaria and to the ends of the earth, which at that time was a
- 0:56little place called Rome. And from there it would go to
- 0:59all the corners of the Roman Empire, which was pretty much
- 1:02the whole known world. So buckle yourselves in.
- 1:05We're going to see our favourite characters, our dramatic
- 1:08stories, incredible teaching and miraculous moments as the main
- 1:13character of this story, that is Jesus, through his Spirit grows
- 1:17his church. So let's dive in French, shall
- 1:20we? Let us read together Acts
- 1:22chapter 1. In my first book, I Told you
- 1:35Theophilus about everything Jesus began to do and teach
- 1:39until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen
- 1:42apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.
- 1:46During the 40 days after he suffered and died, he appeared
- 1:49to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in
- 1:53many ways that he was actually alive, and he talked to them
- 1:57about the Kingdom of God. Once when he was eating with
- 2:00them, he commanded them, do not leave Jerusalem until the Father
- 2:04sends you the gift he promised. As I told you before, John
- 2:09baptised with water, but in just a few days you will be baptised
- 2:13with the Holy Spirit. So when the apostles were with
- 2:17Jesus, they kept asking him, Lord, has the time come for you
- 2:21to free Israel and restore our Kingdom?
- 2:24He replied, The Father alone has the authority to set those dates
- 2:28and times, and they are not for you to know.
- 2:32But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
- 2:36and you will be my witnesses, telling people about me
- 2:40everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria and
- 2:44to the ends of the earth. After saying this, he was taken
- 2:49up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no
- 2:52longer see him. As they strained to see him
- 2:55rising into heaven, 2 white robed men suddenly stood among
- 3:00them. Men of Galilee, they said, Why
- 3:03are you standing here staring into heaven?
- 3:06Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will
- 3:10return from heaven in the same way you saw him go.
- 3:15Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of
- 3:18Olives, a distance of half a mile.
- 3:21When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house
- 3:24where they were staying. Here are the names of those who
- 3:27were present Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas,
- 3:34Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot,
- 3:39and Judas son of James. They all met together and were
- 3:44constantly united in prayer along with Mary, the mother of
- 3:47Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
- 3:52During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one
- 3:56place, Peter stood up and addressed them.
- 4:00Brothers. He said the Scriptures had to be
- 4:03fulfilled. Concerning Judas, who guided
- 4:06those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by
- 4:10the Holy Spirit speaking through King David.
- 4:14Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.
- 4:18Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his
- 4:21treachery, falling head first. There his body split open,
- 4:26spilling out all his intestines. The news of his death spread to
- 4:30all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic
- 4:34name Akeldama, which means field of blood.
- 4:39Peter continued. This was written in the book of
- 4:42Psalms where it says let his home become desolate with no one
- 4:47living in it. It also says let someone else
- 4:51take his position. So now we must choose a
- 4:54replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the
- 4:57entire time we were travelling with the Lord Jesus.
- 5:00From the time he was baptised by John until the day he was taken
- 5:04from us. Whoever is chosen will join us
- 5:08as a witness of Jesus resurrection.
- 5:11So they nominated 2 men Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as
- 5:16Justice, and Matthias. Then they all prayed, O Lord,
- 5:21you know every heart. Show us which of these men you
- 5:25have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry,
- 5:29for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.
- 5:33Then they cast lots and Matthias was selected to become an
- 5:38apostle with the other 11. Our Lord, you are God alone and
- 5:53you sit on a throne above every other, and even you know that
- 5:59working in teams is best. And you call us into community,
- 6:05into your church, so that we can together share your love and
- 6:10work at bringing your Kingdom to be a reality here on earth, just
- 6:15as it is in heaven. Lord, as we read today about
- 6:20your community of apostles being restored to 12, we reflect on
- 6:26our lives and the fact that you have placed us in teams, You
- 6:30have placed us in community where together we can do good
- 6:34work. Lord, each one of us, you have
- 6:37given gifts and thank you that you call us to be part of your
- 6:42work. But Lord, you don't call us
- 6:43alone, but you call us together, so help us look for other like
- 6:48minded souls so that we can join as your church, as your
- 6:53community to bring your reality to earth.
- 6:59Thank You that this reality that you give us is a beautiful
- 7:02glimpse into your eternal reality that we just cannot wait
- 7:07to stand side by side with you in that beautiful place in your
- 7:11presence. But until then, here we are.
- 7:15Lord, use us together, and we pray all of this in the saving
- 7:18name of Jesus. Amen.
