- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:18multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:20With me today to talk about the US dollar and what we should do with it and the RAND
- 0:23and what we should do with that.
- 0:25It's Rene Igar.
- 0:27Rene...
- 0:29The RAND, as I look at my screen now, as we pre-record this podcast, is 16 to the
- 0:32US dollar.
- 0:34So I think to myself, the RAND's really, really strong, and that's very good for
- 0:37the central bank.
- 0:39It's a sort of a barometer of the health of the country.
- 0:41So the RAND being strong is good.
- 0:43And as a personal investor, I should be bringing my dollars back now, shouldn't I?
- 0:48Hi, Lindsay.
- 0:48Thanks for having me on your podcast.
- 0:50So firstly, no, I don't believe that you should be bringing your dollars back?
- 0:57And we're actually getting a lot of clients asking us the same question.
- 1:02But if you put it in perspective, the RAND is strong at the moment based on a few
- 1:09things.
- 1:09And obviously, in particular, the current commodity cycle with, you know,
- 1:14gold and silver and everything shooting the lights out.
- 1:18And everything is a bit skewed.
- 1:20So although there are some very positive things happening in South Africa, like...
- 1:24ESCOM and, you know, just to kind of mention one big, big thing.
- 1:30But we're not manufacturing anything.
- 1:33We're not, you know, exporting in mass.
- 1:39We actually are not, nothing's changed.
- 1:42We're not making anything here.
- 1:44So a lot of this perceived RAN strength can switch in an instant.
- 1:51So in other words, you know, at the moment, commodities are holding our rand
- 1:57up and everybody's a little bit scared of the dollar.
- 1:59So they're rushing out of the dollar.
- 2:00But, you know, South Africa is a very liquid market.
- 2:03It can change in an instant.
- 2:04So, you know, besides the investment opportunities that you get globally, no,
- 2:11definitely not.
- 2:12Definitely not.
- 2:13I think about 70% of this current strength is the US, is the dollar weakness.
- 2:21And about 30% is in the RAND's favour at this point in time.
- 2:25So what you're saying is that it's out of South Africa's control, the strength of
- 2:29the RAND that is.
- 2:31Number one, you say it's the US dollar weakness, nothing to do with South Africa,
- 2:34nothing to do with South African manufacturing or lack thereof.
- 2:38And the other 30% you talked about was the commodity cycle.
- 2:41And commodity cycles are exactly that, Rene.
- 2:44I know from many years of bitter personal experience.
- 2:48that when you get excited about commodities, that's usually the time that
- 2:52they kick you in the teeth.
- 2:54Hopefully not.
- 2:56Hopefully there's more to come.
- 2:58But commodity cycles end and then you go into a down cycle and that's when the RAND
- 3:00goes weak.
- 3:02So in fact, what you might be saying here is contrary to what I said in my cheeky
- 3:06introduction.
- 3:08And that is you should actually be buying your dollars now or whatever currency it
- 3:14is against the RAND.
- 3:16Be contrarian.
- 3:18Absolutely.
- 3:20And.
- 3:22It goes to the same thing, you know, you buy when there's blood on the streets type
- 3:22of thing.
- 3:22You know what I mean?
- 3:23Everybody, when the RAND goes on its weakening phase,
- 3:28then everybody phones and wants to invest.
- 3:31But when it's strong like this, nobody wants to take money offshore.
- 3:35And this is when the smart investor takes the opportunity.
- 3:40I mean, if you look at just like, okay, gold is one thing, I think it's up 30%.
- 3:45in dollars since the beginning of the year.
- 3:47But silver was up 60% in the first three weeks of the year.
- 3:53And, you know, there was obviously a big correction last week, and now it's only up
- 3:5810%.
- 4:00But it just shows you the differential of how this whole thing can turn.
- 4:04So yeah, you need to be very careful.
- 4:06I mean, if you look at the currency, you know, if you look at it against, let's
- 4:11say,
- 4:12the Australian dollar or the pound.
- 4:14or the euro, for example.
- 4:16The rand is weaker, but it's not as weak as it is against the dollar,
- 4:22which shows you that it's more dollar weakness than anything else.
- 4:26Yes, the rand is strong because we are, you know, commodity driven and there are a
- 4:33few good things happening, but it's definitely,
- 4:35definitely skewed.
- 4:37And, you know, I've got a lot of sort of, I say the same thing again and again to my
- 4:41clients.
- 4:41The JSC is made up,
- 4:44a large percentage of local companies that have got offshore earnings.
- 4:50So why do you not go just to the offshore earnings,
- 4:55where your global spectrum is way bigger, there are way more sectors, there are way
- 5:00more funds,
- 5:02there are way more opportunities.
- 5:02So I don't see how You know, even investing in the JSC, for example,
- 5:09is a thing because it's so concentrated and it makes up such a small percent of
- 5:14the world market.
- 5:16So I say if you're invested offshore, stick to your guns,
- 5:19stick to your strategy and do not make silly mistakes because it's all
- 5:26emotion driven at the moment.
- 5:28So in other words, don't take too much into account when you see short term
- 5:33currency moves.
- 5:35Don't be swayed.
- 5:37by short-term currency moves.
- 5:39Because if you look at the long-term graph of the rand against the US dollar or other
- 5:43currencies, it's plain and simple.
- 5:45For decades, it's been down.
- 5:47I remember when I first came to South Africa, it was the US dollar, no, the
- 5:50pound, actually.
- 5:52It was about, I don't know if it was 180 or something.
- 5:53The pound bought 1.80 rands, or was it the dollar?
- 5:57Anyway, the point is But look at it now.
- 6:00And that will happen again, although we're in a period of strength and it's very
- 6:03welcome.
- 6:03The RAND should, by historical standards, go down again.
- 6:07So what do you do?
- 6:08You don't panic about the US dollar at the moment.
- 6:11Just stick to your long-term goals, Renee.
- 6:13Stay with your long-term goals.
- 6:15Don't be swayed.
- 6:17I think, I mean, you know, the US, you cannot count the US out by any means.
- 6:23And, you know, they're resilient.
- 6:25They have low unemployment rates at the moment.
- 6:28Their GDP growth is about 3% plus.
- 6:32Their inflation is about, you know, less than 3%.
- 6:35So, you know what I mean?
- 6:38It's going to change.
- 6:39The brand might look stronger for longer.
- 6:42But the bottom line is, it's all based on speculation.
- 6:47So, I saw an interesting number the other day that 80% of,
- 6:5320% of the tariff implementation has...
- 6:57actually happens.
- 6:58So in other words, all the threat of tariffs that have actually been put in the
- 7:05media, only 20%
- 7:07have actually been actioned.
- 7:0980% is Trump's tax tactics for negotiating power.
- 7:13So again, we've got this market that's running up and down based on emotion,
- 7:20speculation,
- 7:22And just one person's view, you know, one person speaks and...
- 7:28you know, South Africa gets the cold kind of thing.
- 7:31So it's very, very tricky at the moment.
- 7:33But I do believe that we might, this whole commodity cycle,
- 7:39we might be closer to reflection point than we think.
- 7:43I don't know how much longer it can go on for.
- 7:45Well, we had a warning.
- 7:47We've recently had a warning, haven't we, with the gold price at one stage.
- 7:50And it was in the early hours of Friday morning.
- 7:53I don't know why I was up, but I was.
- 7:55It went to 5,000.
- 7:58six hundred and twenty five dollars an ounce within
- 8:0236 hours it was nine hundred dollars plus less than that i've never seen anything
- 8:09like that but it shows you the
- 8:11vulnerability of a commodity cycle it'll go up again i'm sure but longer term it'll
- 8:16come down to its long-term
- 8:18average as will other things like the platinum group metals like iron or like
- 8:23coal everything else so yes be be of the commodity
- 8:25cycle and stick to your guns stay focused renee that's your message i think you
- 8:29Absolutely, Lindsay.
- 8:31And, you know, from my side at this stage, you know,
- 8:34people can't handle these big ups and downs.
- 8:37So, you know, don't have all your money in gold.
- 8:40Don't have all your money in silver.
- 8:41You know what I mean?
- 8:43Diversify, keep it calm, keep it simple, keep a level head, and it'll all play out.
- 8:48I'm not saying don't have exposure to South African market or commodities.
- 8:53By all means, have, but just all in moderation.
- 8:57And I think that's...
- 8:58That's the clear message.
- 8:59And the clear message is also speak to your financial advisor.
- 9:02Renee, thank you very much for your time.
