Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Another new report showing some Maori kids are falling through
- 0:04Speaker 1: the cracks. The Independent Children's Monitor found all the usual
- 0:07Speaker 1: stats for those in state care. Here's an interesting one.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Ninety two percent of those in trouble with Youth Justice
- 0:14Speaker 1: had a previous care and protection concern raised about them
- 0:18Speaker 1: when they were younger. In other words, childhood at home
- 0:21Speaker 1: was bad, then they act out. Tracy Shipton CEO and
- 0:25Speaker 1: voice of fuck itong with my is with me? Tracy,
- 0:27Speaker 1: good morning.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, good morning.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Good to have you on this program. Does this report
- 0:31Speaker 1: tell us anything new?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't tell us as an organization anything new
- 0:38Speaker 2: because we've been talking with young people for years now
- 0:41Speaker 2: and getting their view on the care system, so it's
- 0:44Speaker 2: not a big surprise to us.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So do you have any hope anything is going to change?
- 0:48Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't matter what government's in place, And
- 0:51Speaker 1: this report says that even the interventions that have been
- 0:53Speaker 1: put in place, you can't accurately tell whether they're having
- 0:56Speaker 1: much of an effect.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, I think what the report does tell us is
- 1:00Speaker 2: that there's opportunities to actually make impactful intervention really early.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It tells us that ninety two percent go on from
- 1:09Speaker 2: care and protection concern raised to youth Justice tells us
- 1:13Speaker 2: there was a window somewhere earlier to do something, And
- 1:16Speaker 2: I guess for us, that's the challenge. What can we
- 1:20Speaker 2: do earlier? What can we do as a collective community
- 1:23Speaker 2: that's going to really impact positively the lives of these
- 1:27Speaker 2: young of these young people.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The Minister of Finance and Bill English before her would say,
- 1:32Speaker 1: the answer is social investment, you target These are the
- 1:36Speaker 1: exactly the young people you want to be targeting, and
- 1:39Speaker 1: you already have these red flags right that they've been
- 1:42Speaker 1: in a home where there's been a care and protection issue.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Is that an answer?
- 1:49Speaker 2: I think well, what certainly is an answer is saying
- 1:53Speaker 2: that we should invest in young people. Like if we
- 1:56Speaker 2: think about the language and what we're saying in these
- 1:58Speaker 2: reports is we want better outcomes. What's a better outcome?
- 2:02Speaker 2: A better outcome is a childhood where somebody emerges from
- 2:06Speaker 2: it hole. We have opportunities here, It's not happening, it's
- 2:10Speaker 2: this is a stark reminder that if we get an
- 2:13Speaker 2: early wrap around gives lots of support to Farno and
- 2:18Speaker 2: young people at the right opportunity, Yes, we can make
- 2:21Speaker 2: a difference. I am totally optimist that we can do that.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Tracy, appreciate your time this morning. Tracy Shipton, CEO of Voice,
- 2:28Speaker 1: Fuck Itong with mine. It is sixteen after five year
- 2:30Speaker 1: on News Talks, there'd be I actually happen to believe wholeheartedly,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and that's just how you do it and how effective
- 2:37Speaker 1: it is, whether you know whether you're just throwing money
- 2:40Speaker 1: pissing in the wind. Basically. For more from early edition
- 2:44Speaker 1: with Ryan Bridge, Listen live to News Talks there'd be
