Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You An Energy Faucet Or Drain?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everybody, Emily Evadi here with five Minute Friday. I
- 0:24Speaker 1: am feeling like I'm doing a thousand things this morning,
- 0:29Speaker 1: including recording this, so it is in your feed at
- 0:32Speaker 1: the right time for Friday morning. I am gearing up
- 0:36Speaker 1: to host an event midday for Athleta and so they
- 0:40Speaker 1: have a new flagship location, Flagship location opening just south
- 0:47Speaker 1: of Houston Street, and then I will be hopping on
- 0:50Speaker 1: a plane and making my way to DC to spend
- 0:53Speaker 1: some time with my loved ones, one of which is
- 0:58Speaker 1: newly pregnant and another is newly engaged, so lots of
- 1:02Speaker 1: things to celebrate.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I digress.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I have been having one of those weeks where I
- 1:08Speaker 1: am reminded the beauty of surrounding yourself with good people.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So last Sunday night, I had a few girlfriends over,
- 1:16Speaker 1: knowing that I was going to be away this weekend
- 1:19Speaker 1: and Thanksgiving is coming really fast. I am hosting Thanksgiving
- 1:23Speaker 1: and I wanted to have the tree up in time.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So I decided to combine the process of getting the
- 1:29Speaker 1: apartment ready for the holidays with having some girlfriends over
- 1:33Speaker 1: and had a little marrymaking evening.
- 1:35Speaker 2: If we will, the.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Only rule for the marrymaking evening on Sunday was that
- 1:40Speaker 1: you needed to bring an ornament. And I was just
- 1:44Speaker 1: so blown away by the thoughtfulness of all of my
- 1:47Speaker 1: friends to bring something that they genuinely thought of me
- 1:52Speaker 1: when they looked at And let's laugh that a lot
- 1:54Speaker 1: of these have to do with food. A croissant, a
- 1:57Speaker 1: bagel with locks. Oh, a friend of mine and I
- 2:00Speaker 1: dressed up as astronauts for Halloween. She brought me an astronaut.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I have donuts. I have a pizza box, like truly
- 2:08Speaker 1: the cutest things. Oh, we can't forget the converse sneaker.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I digress. I just had such a lovely evening with
- 2:16Speaker 1: these women in my apartment who made me feel loved
- 2:20Speaker 1: and valued and exchanging, like really beautiful conversation. And I
- 2:24Speaker 1: woke up on Monday feeling really charged up for the week.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I noticed that I was on my coffee walk and
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was smiling, and I accidentally tipped three dollars. If
- 2:37Speaker 1: you go to the coffee shop and you use one
- 2:39Speaker 1: of those like iPads that you pay on typically when
- 2:42Speaker 1: you pay there's one, two, three dollars, three separate options,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and then there's no tip. And I went to go
- 2:48Speaker 1: press the one, but pressed the three just in like
- 2:51Speaker 1: the bagginess of my jacket and the things that I
- 2:54Speaker 1: was holding, and I thought to myself, like, obviously, no harm,
- 2:59Speaker 1: no foul. I didn't mean to tip three dollars, but
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm happy too. But I texted my friend and I
- 3:05Speaker 1: was like, I was just so flustered at the coffee shop,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and I tipped three dollars, and I was like, karma
- 3:09Speaker 1: is about to come back to me big time, and literally,
- 3:12Speaker 1: as I walked outside, a woman by the name of
- 3:15Speaker 1: Katie I believe, walked up to me.
- 3:17Speaker 2: She was a hurdler. She is a hurdler. She introduced
- 3:20Speaker 2: herself to me.
- 3:21Speaker 1: We had like this really beautiful conversation and I left
- 3:24Speaker 1: that also smiling and just thinking about how great it
- 3:27Speaker 1: is that we can be the energy that we want
- 3:31Speaker 1: to attract, right, And I said that I was walking
- 3:34Speaker 1: around and I was smiling, and I was happy on Monday,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and I felt as though that good karma just came
- 3:39Speaker 1: with me, right. It was like one thing just flowed
- 3:43Speaker 1: into the next thing. And then I felt as though,
- 3:45Speaker 1: because I was on such a high, that I had
- 3:48Speaker 1: more to give, which brings me to the concept of
- 3:51Speaker 1: energy faucets and energy drains.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You can choose to be a faucet.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You can surround yourself with faucets individuals that give positive
- 3:59Speaker 1: energy to or you can be a drain, a person that,
- 4:03Speaker 1: because of one thing or another, just is sucking the
- 4:07Speaker 1: goodness out of a situation. I think we can all,
- 4:10Speaker 1: like nod our heads, in agreement that we have been
- 4:12Speaker 1: in situations where we have been surrounded by drains, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: sometimes it is easier to get away from that than others.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Know that you can choose to be an energy faucet.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You can choose over time. It might take a little
- 4:29Speaker 1: bit of work, but to surround yourself with faucets as well.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Be mindful of how you feel when you leave people,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and know that you are the sum of those that
- 4:38Speaker 1: you spend the most of your time with. So consciously
- 4:41Speaker 1: choose your relationships. Know that you are worthy of energy faucets,
- 4:45Speaker 1: that you are worthy of walking around with that smile
- 4:48Speaker 1: on your face on Monday morning.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Period.
- 4:51Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week, if you do an
- 4:54Speaker 1: inventory of your life, is there anyone that is ever
- 4:59Speaker 1: present that when you walk away from them you feel better?
- 5:04Speaker 1: And what does that feeling really mean to you? Describe
- 5:08Speaker 1: it again? Is there someone in your life that is
- 5:11Speaker 1: an energy faucet that makes you consciously feel better when
- 5:15Speaker 1: you leave them, and can you describe what that feeling
- 5:19Speaker 1: is like for you? An added extra challenge, whoever you
- 5:24Speaker 1: think of right now that this person is, maybe go
- 5:28Speaker 1: out on a limb and tell them, Yeah, I'm sure
- 5:31Speaker 1: they'll appreciate it. And now a listener question.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, this is Ali from Philadelphia. I've been a
- 5:39Speaker 3: huge Hurdle fan for a few years now, and more
- 5:42Speaker 3: recently I've been especially loving your five minute Fridays and
- 5:46Speaker 3: the prompts that you leave all your listeners with. I'm
- 5:49Speaker 3: normally mid run when i'm listening, so it's really the
- 5:51Speaker 3: perfect time for my own personal self reflection. So with
- 5:56Speaker 3: that two part question for you, one looking back on
- 6:00Speaker 3: your adult life, what is one piece of advice that
- 6:03Speaker 3: you would give your younger self? And then looking ahead,
- 6:06Speaker 3: where do you see yourself in five years? And more specifically,
- 6:09Speaker 3: where do you see Hurdle in five years. It's been
- 6:12Speaker 3: really awesome seeing the podcast and the brand evolve. I
- 6:15Speaker 3: would love to hear more about where you see Hurdle
- 6:18Speaker 3: going next.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Thanks Emily, Ali from Philadelphia coming in with the hard
- 6:22Speaker 2: hitting questions this Friday. PS.
- 6:24Speaker 1: If you are listening right now and you have a
- 6:26Speaker 1: listener question, we need them, we want them. I want
- 6:29Speaker 1: to answer all of them asap. Please do me this favor.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Give me the gift of question for this Thanksgiving Seriously,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I would really appreciate it. Click on over to the
- 6:39Speaker 1: show notes and leave me a voice message. I do
- 6:43Speaker 1: have an upcoming listener Questions episode on deck, so in
- 6:46Speaker 1: order to give you that, I need them in return. Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 1: that is my call out. Please now let's see the
- 6:54Speaker 1: first question. Advice to my younger self, I would say
- 6:59Speaker 1: that you don't need to look into somebody else's eyes
- 7:03Speaker 1: to determine how you feel. For so long, as I
- 7:07Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, I was a people pleaser, and I determined
- 7:11Speaker 1: how I felt based on the emotions and like the
- 7:13Speaker 1: temperature and the energy of everybody else around me. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that these days I don't want to
- 7:19Speaker 1: make others happy. Of course I do. It's literally one
- 7:22Speaker 1: of my biggest joys. But I know that how I
- 7:25Speaker 1: feel that starts with me. And so my piece of
- 7:31Speaker 1: advice is to listen to yourself, to truly do a
- 7:36Speaker 1: regular audit and know that your happiness lies in your hands,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it is not determined on how those around you feel.
- 7:46Speaker 1: That's a really big piece of advice I would give myself.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And then the next question, here, where's Hurdle going to
- 7:51Speaker 1: be at in five years?
- 7:52Speaker 2: I want Hurdle to be a brand.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Brand Like, yes, Hurdle is a brand now, and yes,
- 7:58Speaker 1: many of you listening to this in a five minute
- 8:00Speaker 1: Friday every week you listen to the show regularly. It
- 8:02Speaker 1: has become a staple in your routine. And for that
- 8:05Speaker 1: I am so thankful. But there's so much more that
- 8:07Speaker 1: I want to do, and other evolutions of let's call
- 8:11Speaker 1: it my business that have yet to take flight. And
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think about being on Forbes lists, and I think
- 8:20Speaker 1: about just things that are so far from where I'm
- 8:23Speaker 1: at right now that I dream of, and I don't
- 8:25Speaker 1: have a lot of answers on how to necessarily get there.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But I know that if I ask questions and put
- 8:31Speaker 1: my ego aside and keep stepping up and like embracing
- 8:35Speaker 1: my spot in these different spaces and sitting down at
- 8:38Speaker 1: the table and making a name for myself, that eventually,
- 8:41Speaker 1: with hard work, that the things that I envision will come.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So I wanted to be a brand brand. I wanted
- 8:47Speaker 1: to be a bigger website. I want to have a
- 8:50Speaker 1: legitimate team. I want to have a business that has
- 8:54Speaker 1: a full time employee in five years at least one.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I hope that I look back on this episode and
- 8:59Speaker 1: like kind of laugh a little bit, because maybe it'll
- 9:02Speaker 1: be even bigger than I imagined, which is already where
- 9:05Speaker 1: it is right now. In terms of me, I mean,
- 9:09Speaker 1: in five years, gosh, I would love also to be married.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Maybe I'll have a child, maybe I won't.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Have a child. So I'm going to manifest that for
- 9:17Speaker 2: myself as well.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I want to continue on being happy in my life
- 9:22Speaker 1: and share that love with others as I have been doing.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And you know, maybe by this time I'll have a Brownstone.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Hey, A woman can dream, right, A woman can dream.
- 9:35Speaker 2: That's it for this week.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on social
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle Podcast. I myself am over at Emily
- 9:41Speaker 1: Abadi another Hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: don't forget to submit a listener question.
