Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andy England: Darfield High School Principal on schools struggling to keep of track students with image restrictions
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Research released to ZB shows two-thirds of schools surveyed have
- 0:03Speaker 1: accidentally published an image of a child online despite their
- 0:07Speaker 1: parents saying don't. Andrew England, Darfield High School principal with
- 0:11Speaker 1: me this morning.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hey, Andy.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Well done, Ryan. That was very formal, Andrew.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry. Sorry about that.
- 0:17Speaker 3: No, you're good.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Andy, speaking of formal, don't parents sign like a formal
- 0:22Speaker 1: declaration and say, tick a box that says, no, don't
- 0:25Speaker 1: post a photo of my kid?
- 0:28Speaker 3: They do at the time of enrolment, absolutely. But as
- 0:31Speaker 3: a school, you're kind of between a rock and a
- 0:33Speaker 3: hard place. And it is true, and I know that
- 0:36Speaker 3: we've also done that, made that same mistake and then
- 0:39Speaker 3: fixed it. But you, as a school of, say, 800 students,
- 0:43Speaker 3: you might have a handful of students who don't want
- 0:45Speaker 3: their pictures, or whose parents don't want their pictures to
- 0:47Speaker 3: be online. You get busy during the day, you're taking
- 0:50Speaker 3: those pictures of all this great stuff. You've got lots
- 0:52Speaker 3: of other parents who love seeing their kids doing great
- 0:55Speaker 3: school things. And then you... throw it on social media
- 0:58Speaker 3: so everybody can enjoy it, and you realize you've made
- 1:01Speaker 3: a mistake.
- 1:02Speaker 2: So when you say social media, do you mean public pages?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Yeah, the most common thing that schools use is public pages.
- 1:12Speaker 3: It's Facebook, Instagram, et cetera. And it is a real risk.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I mean, as I say, I can't actually remember when
- 1:18Speaker 3: we did it as a mistake, but I do remember
- 1:20Speaker 3: we had to retrieve it one time. If you think
- 1:22Speaker 3: about all the different media channels that schools use nowadays,
- 1:26Speaker 3: And it's largely, I'll say, it's for a good reason
- 1:29Speaker 3: because people want to share all the cool things that's happening.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And I guess it affects my marketing as well. There's
- 1:33Speaker 3: all sorts of reasons for it. But you've got the
- 1:38Speaker 3: commercial products, the meta range, your school website, your newsletters,
- 1:44Speaker 3: et cetera. And then often within the school, you've got
- 1:46Speaker 3: several people organizing all of your different media for you.
- 1:49Speaker 3: So you've got to try and coordinate that knowledge across
- 1:51Speaker 3: all of them.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So why not just, I mean, if the risk is
- 1:55Speaker 2: that you put a photo up that a parent didn't
- 1:57Speaker 2: want to be there, why not just keep it to
- 1:59Speaker 2: a newsletter?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Exactly. And I think what this article is saying that
- 2:07Speaker 3: you've got there is that the landscape has changed. The
- 2:10Speaker 3: risks have changed in the last few years. The ability
- 2:13Speaker 3: for AI to go out and harvest and mass images
- 2:16Speaker 3: and names and all that kind of stuff from schools
- 2:19Speaker 3: didn't exist five or ten years ago. and the awareness
- 2:22Speaker 3: of it and so on. So I think most of
- 2:23Speaker 3: us at schools are looking at how far do we
- 2:25Speaker 3: pull back. There's technology available now where you can actually just,
- 2:29Speaker 3: for families who want to, you can scan the faces
- 2:32Speaker 3: of their children and then you can now blur them
- 2:34Speaker 3: out automatically. So you can't really make those same mistakes.
- 2:38Speaker 3: There are a range of things. Who wants to see
- 2:40Speaker 3: blurred out faces in their school website? So we've got
- 2:44Speaker 3: a bit of our hands to try and manage all this.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Andy England, Darfield High School Principal. For more from Early
