- 1:01It's a very comfortable evening at the ballpark, a bit more breezy than it has been as of late.
- 1:06The breeze is blowing directly into the center field, but will not affect the play very much.
- 1:11Harry Carey and Jack Buck on hand with the play-by-play, and two right-handers for the latter, Rick Wise, a Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:18His record is 9-10. He's 1-1 against the Cardinals this year.
- 1:22The Cardinals' next player is Bob Gibson. He's making his second appearance. He's coming off the disabled list.
- 1:27And his first appearance at home since the same, that broken leg against the Pirates.
- 1:33A lot of other baseball being played this evening. A lot of things to keep you up to date on.
- 1:38Right now, Charlie Jones, the public address announcer, is giving the lineup to the crowd.
- 1:43And we have a crowd of about, oh, 16,000 fans and about 3,000 youngsters.
- 1:50And now Bob Gibson is about to be announced as the starting pitcher here this evening.
- 1:54We'll see what the reaction is.
- 1:57And the crowd is glad to have Bob Gibson back in the pitching rotation.

- 4:44Thank you very much, Jack. Hello again, everybody.
- 4:47Here's the first pitch of the ballgame. Fastball in there. Strike off.
- 4:50And Bob Gibson really fired that one. McCarver to catch.
- 4:54And Gagliano at third. Maxfield at short. Javier at second. And David Perk.
- 4:58Brock in left. Tolan in center. Maris in right. Sub pitch.
- 5:02Quite a little bit outside. The kind of even a ball in the strike. Nobody on and nobody out.
- 5:07Rojas, Cookie. Cookie Rojas with three homers and 40 RBI.
- 5:12Bob Gibson delivers. Here it is.
- 5:15High, pop foul. Out of play into the stand. A half-moon shine.
- 5:24Over Bush Memorial Stadium.
- 5:27The Cardinals' magic number is eight. Into the windup, the pitch.
- 5:33Round ball. Maxfield to his left. Up and throwing. He's out. One away.
- 5:39Down Mountfield. Moving to his left. Boy, that little guy.
- 5:44That's it. He's probably the most underrated man in baseball.
- 5:47You know, we got so many named stars on this ball.
- 5:50Probably you never even think about Maxfield. Except when the ball hits towards him.
- 5:54Or when it comes to bat. When it requires a hit or a butt.
- 5:59What he produces.
- 6:02Most underrated, a little shortstop.
- 6:05One out. Tony Taylor to batter. Hitting 250. A windup by Gibson. A pitch.
- 6:11Oh, strike call.
- 6:14I got an idea. Gibson wants to make up in a couple of weeks. What he missed in two months.
- 6:19One strike, no balls. One out and nobody on. Bob Gibson.
- 6:23Facing Tony Taylor. Here's the pitch.
- 6:29Line into the right field corner. Strike two. Two strikes and no balls.
- 6:34Cleveland three. White stocks nothing.
- 6:37But the White stocks are batting a long time and a six.
- 6:41And they've changed pitchers for Cleveland.
- 6:44Culver. First game of a night doubleheader.
- 6:48Twins are losing at Washington. Here's the pitch. White foul back and out of play.
- 6:53Two strikes, no balls. One out and nobody on.
- 6:58White stocks got two. And Cleveland leads three to two at the end of six.
- 7:04Tony Taylor digging in. From the Havana, Cuba.
- 7:09Here's the windup. The pitch.
- 7:11A little tap. He's going to beat it out if it stays there. But it goes foul.
- 7:15Two strikes, no balls.
- 7:18Beta Pinson-Holmers with a man on the second.
- 7:22For the Reds who now lead the Pirates six to one at the end of two.
- 7:26Henry Aaron hit his 36th and Ty Upham wins.
- 7:29However, a mess lead at Atlanta three to one in the bottom of the fourth.
- 7:36LaVoda hit one with one off and a mess.
- 7:39Two strikes, no balls. One out and nobody on.
- 7:45Here's the windup. The pitch.
- 7:48And it's high. Two strikes and a ball. One out.
- 7:52Jim Lombard shooting for his 20th victory of the year has a one to nothing lead at the end of six over Catfish Hunter.
- 7:59Reggie Smith-Holmer. Here's the pitch high.
- 8:02Two balls, two strikes. One out.
- 8:05No game in the first. No score. Delightfully cool evening. The crowd about 25.
- 8:13Now the signal given.
- 8:16Here's the pitch.
- 8:19High fly, right center. Bobby Toland dashing back. He's got it.
- 8:25Two outs. Rock is playing left. Toland in center. Marissa Wright.
- 8:34Here's Johnny Callison hitting 266.
- 8:48The pitch. It's a curve and a strike called Boyd Gibson looks good.
- 8:54Eddie Messer and Bob Blaze bringing the notes up from the people from out of town.
- 9:00Strike no ball. The foot. And it's a curveball outside. The counters in and a ball and a strike with two outs.
- 9:06Johnny Callison, 13 homers, 63 RBI and hitting 266.
- 9:14People are here from the town I can't pronounce the name of.
- 9:18There's a line shot. Right center. Marissa going over on the second half.
- 9:23Callison stops it first.
- 9:27I hear from Arkansas City Kansas.
- 9:33Or Kansas City Kansas. Or Arkansas City Kansas.
- 9:41Anyway, they're from Kansas.
- 9:46We also hear from Kirkwood.
- 9:54From Kirkwood 9, almost a thousand people are here.
- 9:58Here's Tony Gonzales, left handed hitter. Second to Clemente in the fight for the batting championship.
- 10:04Gonzales hitting 342.
- 10:09Clemente hitting 350. First pitch is inside.
- 10:15Are they kidding?
- 10:18There's a couple here celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. That's going to be a mistake.
- 10:24Nobody could be married 60 years.
- 10:26Here's the pitch flop. High hopper. Maxie's going to have to hustle.
- 10:32Boy, that was a close one.
- 10:34Maxfield on a high hopper. Throw out Gonzales.
- 10:38No runs, one hit, no errors, one less. We're going to the bottom of the first nose score.
- 10:44Oh, this is Bob Richards. They say Americans are the hardest working people on earth, and they're probably right.
- 10:50But in a way, all that hard work can make us soft.
- 10:54We may eat haphazardly and not get enough of the right kind of exercise.
- 10:58So if you have just enough energy to run for the bus in the morning, take a tip from me.
- 11:03Begin your day with a ten minute workout and a bowl of wheat. You'll be off to a better start.
- 11:08You'll get the exercise you need and the kind of energy you need to start the day.
- 11:13You'll see there's a kernel full of whole wheat energy in every wheatie's plate.
- 11:17You'll get protein, wheat germ, vitamin and iron, plus energy to burn.
- 11:22It's a great way to start the day. Wheat breakfast of ten.
- 11:26Music
- 11:44A couple celebrating their 60th anniversary. From Butler, Illinois. I should say they're 20 years old when they're in art.
- 12:02Now it means living together 80 years. That's beautiful, isn't it? Never have an argument.
- 12:15Here's Lou Brock to lead it off.
- 12:19294, 19 homers and 71 runs batted in. Lou Brock.
- 12:35Now the wind up and here's the pitch. Rick Wides' curve ball is low for one.
- 12:42The Phillies have Tony Taylor at third, Bobby Wine at short, Cookie Rohat at second, Bill White at first,
- 12:48and Bill Rimple the catcher, Wides the pitcher.
- 12:51Here's the delivery. Bobby Wine at the middle base hit.
- 12:55And Lou is on that.
- 12:58Lou Brock singles his left.
- 13:01That's his 15th game in a row.
- 13:06Brock now has 186 hits.
- 13:11He's only 14 away from the coveted 200 hits a year that everybody shoots for.
- 13:19Here's Bobby Taylor left handed hitter hitting 251. Rick Wides gets ready.
- 13:26Throw to first the runner back.
- 13:38Now the stretch.
- 13:43Here's the pitch. There goes Brock. Look, drive ball. White's only playing first base.
- 13:47Boy, I wish Bobby hadn't swung at that one.
- 13:49Because Brock had a tremendous jump and he just made it easily.
- 13:59In only one year has Brock ever had 200 hits previously.
- 14:02That was in 1964 and he had 200 right on the nose as he bowed at 315.
- 14:10Here's Mar. A runner in scoring position with a one-off.
- 14:18Now the signal given. Rick Wides is finished.
- 14:23Fastball outside. One ball, no strike.
- 14:28Wides wears glasses.
- 14:38Now the side. Wides is 1-9, lost 10.
- 14:42There goes Brock. Hey, is the ground ball in the middle? Right here.
- 14:45Brock's going to score. Brock was shooting for third base on that one.
- 14:49And when Mar is single and center, he scores standing up.
- 14:53One to nothing instead of a cardinal. Trying to reduce the magic number for seven.
- 15:06You know, it becomes quite obvious that the cardinals either are going to clinch the pennant and fill it up here next week,
- 15:12or are going to clinch it here in a series starting one week from Thursday night against the Braves,
- 15:27September the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
- 15:31So a leader beyond the road in Philadelphia here in St. Louis.
- 15:37Here's the pay to one to nothing in favor of the cardinals.
- 15:40In fact, the first of the tosses over there.
- 15:43Rod's just drove in his 51st run of the year.
- 15:48Now the bench. It's a strike at the knee. Rick Wides really fired one.
- 15:54Now here's from St. Ambrose Church tonight and from Collierville in Tennessee.
- 16:04One strike, no loss. One run in, one out.
- 16:07Here at first, Maris, the best.
- 16:11Take a good fastball, boy. He buzzed that ball, bud.
- 16:16Honeymooners are here.
- 16:19Jackie Gleason.
- 16:23Now from Columbia, Missouri.
- 16:30The daughter of one of the Baltimore Scouts, Byron Humphrey.
- 16:34The best in the world.
- 16:41They're here from St. James, Missouri.
- 16:45There's a rooster here.
- 16:49She'll be 84 and the rooster will be 87.
- 16:55They're celebrating their 60th anniversary also on the 29th of this month.
- 17:01Two strikes and a ball.
- 17:05He struck him out.
- 17:07So Peta goes down swinging.
- 17:10And I'll bring him a carver.
- 17:12That is 305.
- 17:19There's a Mr. Rooster in there. Mrs. Rooster.
- 17:23Celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary.
- 17:40My carver batting 305.
- 17:48Out of stretch.
- 17:50High pop-ball back and out of play. Strike one.
- 17:54Former Missouri University All-American.
- 18:00And big insurance man now, Jim Peckara, is watching the ball here.
- 18:09My carver with 13 homers, 62 RBI. Batting 305.
- 18:16Rick Wise gets up.
- 18:23Maritz edging off first base.
- 18:28Out of stretch.
- 18:31The fetch outside.
- 18:34That evens out the ball on the strike.
- 18:40Crowd about 20,000 I would say on a cool night.
- 18:49A gentleman named Ed Skorn is now 95 years old, celebrating by attending the game.
- 18:56One ball, one strike. Low and inside. 95.
- 19:07Boy, you can't beat that. Living a wholesome life.
- 19:13Two balls, one strike.
- 19:18One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals. Two men are out. Maritz at first.
- 19:24My carver waiting.
- 19:28The fetch.
- 19:32Curve low. Ball free. Gagliano be up there next. Boy, that Gagliano's considering you're getting close to a world series.
- 19:42When you make a major change in your lineup, it's rather significant.
- 19:49Bill's getting a lot of chances to play.
- 19:54Three balls, one strike.
- 20:03Here's the fetch.
- 20:06Strike. It's called. Good curve ball. Three and two. And now Maritz will be going with the fetch.
- 20:22Three balls, two strikes.
- 20:26Signal given.
- 20:31Strike wide. He's ready. Now the best. High pump ball back. Being chased out of play.
- 21:02Three balls, two strikes.
- 21:09Now the signal given. Maritz will be going with the pitch. Two out. One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 21:18Rick Wise is set.
- 21:22There goes the runner. Here's the fetch. Now ball up the middle, but Rojas has got it over the first inside.
- 21:29Some a-cliver roll to Rojas. One run. Two hits. No errors. One run. At the end of one, the Cardinals won. The Phillies nothing.
- 21:39First camp an hour is just time for Kansas City to tie up the Red Sox. One-one.
- 21:47You know that meeting in the Commissioner's office was supposed to produce an announcement this evening.
- 21:53Check our camo. Sports room. More information on it.
- 22:02Here's Johnny Bridge, left-handed batter. Bob Gibson delivers.
- 22:07Isn't that a fast ball that he is? Gibson really throwing it hard.
- 22:15Boy, you can see the improvement from one strike to the other. Here's the wind-up.
- 22:20He foul-tips strike two. Two strikes, no more. Nobody on and nobody out.
- 22:27We're in the top of the second. The Cardinals are leading one to nothing.
- 22:32Dick Hughes against Larry Jackson, a more night.
- 22:40Here's the pitch. He foul-tips back.
- 22:43Here's the wire from Toronto, Canada. Coming in loud and clear. Announce address for World Series ticket.
- 22:51Sign Lin Clark, Toronto, Kansas.
- 23:02Here's a, did it hit him? Yeah. Or did it? No.
- 23:08It foul-tips. It actually hit the bat. That's what Shag Crawford indicated.
- 23:14And Gene Mark got a nap. And Bridge says it hit him on the arm.
- 23:20And Shag tries to find a blackened blue mark.
- 23:28Gene Mark comes out the top to Johnny Briggs.
- 23:44Now we've got a lot of messages of people who have had more anniversaries than 65.
- 23:48I'm sorry, but they don't count if you're not the ballpark. I'm sure there are many more than that all over.
- 23:59Two strikes, no more. Johnny Briggs, the pitch tap right back to Gibson. He's got it.
- 24:06Oh, but it's a fade up to the eye. One man up and one down.
- 24:19The summary on the Kansas City situation is just coming in. And Bernie Fox.
- 24:28How about producing staff at San Alexis? Getting the details. Here's Bill White, one out of nobody on the pitch.
- 24:37It's high inside. White hitting 260.
- 24:43That doesn't sound like much, does it? But when you figure he can hardly walk for most of the season,
- 24:49bouncing ball, who'll be coming in fast? He's up. Swift inside. Two out, two out.
- 24:58They hear from Peoria, Illinois.
- 25:04They hear from San Hopkins City. They hear from Streater, Illinois.
- 25:21Here's Clay Dahlrempel, the catcher, the pitch curve, a little bit outside, Mowen.
- 25:25One ball, no strikes, two out. Nobody on base. Cardinals out in front, one to nothing.
- 25:31That's a magic number.
- 25:36Here's the line.
- 25:41The pitch. High pop fly. That'll take an hour to get down.
- 25:46Cepeda's waiting for it. He's got it. Dahlrempel pops the Cepeda. One, two, three, nothing at par.
- 25:54We go to the bottom of second. The Cardinals won. The Phillies nothing.
- 25:59The men of any ball club have new talent. Every team has a team of experts in the field scouting for new players.
- 26:06At Anheuser-Busch, they also have a team of scouts in the field, specially trained experts constantly searching for the best grains and hops for the brewing of books.
- 26:14No ball club is better than its talent. No beer is better than its ingredients.
- 26:19That's why you'll find the men of Anheuser-Busch in the field and on the floor of commodity exchanges throughout the world scouting for the best for books.
- 26:28You can't say beer is better.
- 26:35When you do for a beer, Busch does it.
- 26:42Satisfies like no other beer can.
- 26:47Busch delivers all the satisfaction a whole glass of beer can give you. You can't say beer is better than Busch.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:59We go to the bottom of second. Before we do, let's pause quickly. This is the Cardinals baseball net left.
- 27:04A 26 camo X, camo X FM, single, temperature 73. Looking for a bargain in home comfort? Call ESCO, the American Furnace Company, admission 7, 1300.
- 27:18Harry Charity and Jack Buck from Busch Memorial Stadium. We're going into the bottom of the second. One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals. Here's Gagliano.
- 27:27Hitting 230. Here's Rick Wise's fifth. It's a strike, a good fastball. One strike, no ball.
- 27:36Cleveland three, White Sox two at the end of seven.
- 27:41Baltimore three, Detroit two at the end of four. Here's the best. Oh, he's hit by a pitch ball. He's hurt.
- 27:50On his arm, on his wrist. Oh, he's doubled over in pain. Bob Bowman hurries out there, red shamed him.
- 28:00Bill trying to walk by him. He is hurt. That was on the left hand. He's on the list of the fingers.
- 28:09They want somebody to limber up. Eddie Bursue. He's hurting. There's a Mike Shannon going down. Mike Shannon goes down to limber up.
- 28:20Oh, he's wincing. He wants to walk down the line and Bowman stays with him. And his knees kind of buckle as the pain takes its torture, as it were.
- 28:40That's kind of a nice phrase, the pain takes its torture. You've got to remember that one. I'm a thing, I'll mark it down.
- 28:50Bill wants to stay on the ball again. I think it's the finger on the middle finger on the left hand.
- 29:03He's hit by a pitch ball. He's on his first base. He's going to stay on the ball again.
- 29:13He's flexing his muscle now, his hand, his fist. He's going to stay in there.
- 29:23He's passed by the end with a runner and Bursue going over the eye. The back of the left hand is really the middle finger that was hurting.
- 29:35Straight up by Bowman. Look at him pull at that finger. Maybe he's going to be passable now. The short wireless is going to tighten up on him. It has to as hard as he got in.
- 29:53Bill takes the lead and here's how the year. Bounding 287, 14 homers, 58 runs about an inch. The stretch. Little pitch. D-Wrek over the outside corner of the knee.
- 30:12Cleveland, four. White Sox, two in the bottom of the eighth. Baltimore, four. Detroit, two in the bottom of the fifth.
- 30:24One strike and over. Out of it. Holy swings. Line drive. Base hit. There goes D'Agliano.
- 30:31Two in second. He had a hold up thinking the ball might be caught. How the year breaks his back with a single right. Shot right. And the Cardinals have runners at first and second.
- 30:43Nobody out. Second inning. Already leading one to nothing. Cincinnati murdering Pittsburgh nine to one at the end of three.
- 30:59I'll give you the report from the commissioner's office in a moment. Here's Maxey hitting 226. Runners at first and second. The stretch. The pitch. Pitch out. But they don't throw.
- 31:13Major League Players Association has agreed to withdraw charges of unfair labor practices against Kansas City A's owner, Charles Finley.
- 31:23Charges in the fire with the National Labor Relations Board. Baseball commissioner William Eckerd made the announcement after meeting for two days with Finley, his attorneys, and A's players.
- 31:35Here's the pitch. Maxey swings it. Fly ball right field. Make it over. Carvelson head of the wall. One run is in. Here's Carvelson chasing the ball out. Here's another man allowed third. He holds. A double for Maxwell.
- 31:49Oh, that joke had a tough job there. He had Gagliano running with Avier two steps behind. He had to send Gagliano home and hold Avier up at third. And he did a good job.
- 32:04Eckerd said he will review the suspension of pitcher Luke Krause who was fined $500 by Finley for alleged misconduct aboard a chartered flight on August the 3rd. In an apparent compromise designed to head off a major dispute between the Players Association and Finley, both sides recognize the rights of the others in a formal 280-word statement issued by Eckerd.
- 32:34Now I don't know what that all means, do you? Let's try it again. Major League Players Association has agreed to withdraw charges of unfair labor practices against Kansas City A's owner Charles Finley.
- 32:48The charges have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board. Baseball commissioner William Eckerd made the announcement after meeting for two days with Finley, his attorney, and A's player representative Jack Eckerd. Eckerd said he will review the suspension of pitcher Luke Krause who was fined $500 by Finley for alleged misconduct aboard a chartered flight on August the 3rd.
- 33:10In an apparent compromise designed to head off a major dispute between the Players Association and Finley, both sides recognize the rights of the others in a formal 280-word statement issued by Eckerd.
- 33:23Well, sorry I took up that much of your time. Bob dips in the batter, runners at second and third score 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals, and Rick Wise gets ready.
- 33:39Will Pitch, high pop line. Short right field, Johnny Callison is there, and he makes the shot. Gibson Puff, the Callison in short right.
- 33:53You know, if I thought that was all going to be so nebulous, you know, after all, that's an unprecedented meeting between a commissioner of baseball and a representative of a team and its players.
- 34:05I don't think it's ever been done before. That's why I thought I interrupted. But after I read it once, I couldn't quite comprehend, and after I read it twice, I was sure I couldn't comprehend.
- 34:17So here's Luebrock, runners at second and third, the score is 2-0. In field, in. 1-0. Rick Wise gets ready. The pitch is on the way.
- 34:30A tough lane foul. Boy, the Cardinals could really go a long way toward building up.
- 34:44A fine lead right here against these two runs in. Runners at second and third, here's the pitch. High fast ball. That evens it up a little in the stretch.
- 34:56One run is in. Runners are at second and third with one out. Long game and a second inning. 2-0 and save a dependent foul on St. Louis Cubs.
- 35:05Their matching number can go to seven. Here's the pitch. He had a cut and he missed like two. Luebrock was really going the long way on a high fast ball.
- 35:16Dick Ellsworth, the left-hander, getting ready. Bobby Tolan will be up there next. But this is a big out here because there's only one out. The infield in.
- 35:24Anything through that infield or over it would produce two runs. Cardinals are already out in front two to nothing. Two strikes and a ball.
- 35:36Here's the best. Out. High ball too. They can't even the two balls, two strikes.
- 35:50Out of signal. Reflection, I guess the important thing about that statement I read is the players have withdrawn their charges to the National Labor Board.
- 36:01Here's the pitch. Foul back. Two balls, two strikes.
- 36:07Well I tell you, we're living in times where you have to have a lawyer just to understand whether today is today or tomorrow.
- 36:21Things are really getting complicated. Two balls, two strikes.
- 36:29Rick Wise is ready. The pitch is on the way. Oh, he struck him out on a high bad ball.
- 36:39Luebrock started after it and tried to stop but apparently he had drawn around. Ooh, that hurt.
- 36:46Luebrock strikes out. He chased the bad ball. He realized that he tried to stop but he had gone, the umpire had set around.
- 36:58Here's Bobby Toe with runners at second and third. The score, two to nothing in favor of the cut.
- 37:08Here's the amount to after that. Cincinnati leads Pittsburgh nine to three in the bottom of the fourth.
- 37:14Houston over the cup three to nothing at the bottom of the second.
- 37:18The nuts over Atlanta, three to two at the end of the sixth.
- 37:21Here's the pitch. High almost threw it away ball one.
- 37:27One ball, no strikes.
- 37:29I know General Manager Newseal up in the first box and his son Dick.
- 37:37One ball, no strikes.
- 37:41Left hand hitter waiting.
- 37:45No pitch. High. Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 37:51Bobby Toe went up there and Roger Mares will be next.
- 37:58Try it about twenty or better thousand, maybe twenty-five.
- 38:02Lot of youngsters there. Two balls, no strikes.
- 38:09Here's the pitch.
- 38:11Almost no, he's going to score.
- 38:15Out.
- 38:19Harvey Ayer on a short fast ball, which would have been ball three by the way.
- 38:26He tried to score but he was cut down. The ball didn't roll as far away as he thought.
- 38:32And Harvey Ayer is out from down the rim ball to wide.
- 38:36One-one out of all that. Two hits.
- 38:39No errors of one-one. At the end of two the Cardinals still are the fillies, nothing.
- 38:45See if you remember this play from the Cardinal pass.
- 38:49It's the bottom of the fifth and the Cardinals fail to hit third, three to two.
- 38:52But the bases are loaded one away and the Card's young left fielder, Dan Newseal, is at the play with a count of one at all.
- 38:58Ripped over, the bases loaded onto a full windup and here's the pitch.
- 39:02Here's the swing.
- 39:04The Cardinals are on the side and it's over to the right field for the Indians.
- 39:08The Grand Slam home run, the first for Dan Newseal.
- 39:11What the hell is going on? Some kind of an error.
- 39:15The unexpected provides baseball's most thrilling moment like Stan's home run in 42.
- 39:19But in driving you want to avoid the unexpected and DX Safety Lane service can help you.
- 39:25It includes lubrication plus a thorough inspection of 18 vital points that helps protect you from the unexpected hazards of driving.
- 39:33You pay only for lubrication. The complete safety inspection is yours free.
- 39:38From Sunray DX, the oil company known by the customers we keep.
- 39:45We go to the top of the third, two to nothing and save the Cardinals.
- 39:50Red side taking a three to one lead at the end of eighth.
- 39:54Boy, that American League race is really something.
- 39:59Bobby Wine takes the first pitch high. Wine is hitting 193.
- 40:03If it wasn't for the Cardinals, he'd be hitting 03.
- 40:07He's right. All of his hits have been against the Redbirds.
- 40:11Here's the fifth. Steal right call of fastball.
- 40:15That evens it up with a ball and a strike.
- 40:17Nobody on it and nobody out third inning.
- 40:22Petsha Tim McCarver goes out.
- 40:25Back to Bob Gibson.
- 40:28Washington now leads the twins four to one at the end of sixth.
- 40:38Well, let's see what happens if Washington beats Minnesota.
- 40:43Here's the fifth.
- 40:45Now ball is shot. McAdee's got it.
- 40:47Here's the back. He's out.
- 40:50What a...
- 40:52Oh, I don't know.
- 40:54I guess I could flip back to the pages.
- 40:57When will Nashville ever make an air?
- 41:08I don't think he's made 10 airs all year.
- 41:16Here's Lake Lies.
- 41:20If the twins lose, which they're losing,
- 41:23if the Red Sox win, which they're winning, they'll be tied for first place.
- 41:29If Detroit wins, which they're losing,
- 41:33well, let's say if they lose, which they're losing, they'd stay two games out.
- 41:38Here's the pitch. Wise swings a minute.
- 41:41If the Red Sox lose, which they're losing, they would stay two and a half hours.
- 41:48So actually, here's the curve swing a minute.
- 41:53If the twins lose and the Red Sox win,
- 41:57there will be a little more daylight between the top two and the next two.
- 42:02Here's the curve swing a minute.
- 42:05Two strikes and a ball. One out.
- 42:15Let's hear it at half, one foul pitch.
- 42:19Well, let's see how I can figure this out.
- 42:26I have to go through all the boxers, though, as I'm actually over.
- 42:30One man out. Here's the bet.
- 42:35Strike! He's out of there. Wise call out on strike.
- 42:39First strike out for Gibson.
- 42:43Two men are gone. Cookley Rojas up there.
- 42:53Rojas batting 250 with three homers and 40 runs by the net.
- 42:58Cincinnati's murdering the Pirates 10 to 3.
- 43:00Here's the pitch. Swung and he fouls to one strike and no ball. Two out.
- 43:07Shag Crawford picks up the loose ball and fires it to the pitcher.
- 43:16Now the signal. Gibson ready to try just to tie the ball up.
- 43:26And the fifth.
- 43:29Foul ball back.
- 43:31On the top of the third, the Cardinals are leading two to nothing, trying to reduce their number to seven.
- 43:37And then if the Giants should happen to lose, it would go down to six.
- 43:42Well, I think it's becoming obvious now that the Cardinals will lead it.
- 43:47The ball up. Clint Stapenna and Simon Althea on this road trip are in St. Louis in a four-game series starting against Atlanta, September 21, Thursday night.
- 44:03Two strikes and a ball. Cookley Rojas to bat.
- 44:10Two outs, nobody on. We're in the third.
- 44:15The pitch. Curve ball low. And the count evens two and two.
- 44:23Two balls, two strikes. Cardinals fans are here from Bloomington, Illinois.
- 44:29Now the delivery to Rojas.
- 44:32High curve.
- 44:36They're here from Augusta, Arkansas, Augsburg, Illinois, and Craig, Missouri.
- 44:43Gray balls, two strikes, two outs, nobody on. Two to nothing in favor of the Cardinals. Here's the pitch.
- 44:49A little tap file off to the right.
- 44:52They're here from Washington, Missouri.
- 44:57From Monticello, Illinois, from Enid, Oklahoma. From Enid, Oklahoma.
- 45:03A honeymoon couple. Oh, wow.
- 45:07Three and two pitch.
- 45:09Balls, four and one. First batting.
- 45:14Given up by Gibson.
- 45:23Well, a Bush wholesaler from Tompkins, Los, Missouri.
- 45:32Out here, Tommy D. Salvo with a group.
- 45:42Tony Taylor the batter, two out of runner at first.
- 45:46The pitch.
- 45:48Oh, Gibson is a little off with his control, but off low, which is not a bad sign.
- 45:57They're here from Burlington, Iowa.
- 46:02One ball, no strikes, two out of runner at first.
- 46:06The pitch.
- 46:07Tony Taylor takes a bullet, a strike call.
- 46:15They're here from Pocahontas, Illinois, tonight.
- 46:20One of John Alden is with them.
- 46:23Miles Stanish.
- 46:25Here's the pitch, inside.
- 46:29Who's that that went with Pocahontas?
- 46:33Are you sure?
- 46:39John Smith. No, I don't think so.
- 46:44Here's the pitch.
- 46:45Fuck if he misses, like you.
- 46:47I think it was either John Alden or Miles Stanish.
- 46:53Well, they're rooting here for the Albertos, and I found out tonight that you can pick up those
- 46:58Bravo Bravo Alberto buttons with the Amity character on them.
- 47:03Character.
- 47:06Here at the ballpark now.
- 47:14Two-two pitch.
- 47:16All three.
- 47:22Why, Gibson is so close to the plate on every pitch, and yet he just walked a man, and he's down to three and two on this guy.
- 47:30Tony Taylor waiting, the three-two pitch.
- 47:33Stay!
- 47:35Tony Taylor called out on strikes.
- 47:39No runs, no hits. No errors, one left.
- 47:41We're going to the bottom of the third.
- 47:43The Cardinals two.
- 47:45The Phillies nothing.
- 47:47What can First National Bank in St. Louis do for you if you're planning a new home?
- 47:51First, at First National, you can work out a home financing plan that is precisely for you.
- 47:57Business-like, sensible.
- 47:59When you compare your plans, there are certain major benefits with a mortgage from First National.
- 48:04For example, you do not pay an appraisal fee, a credit report charge, or any charge for the preparation of documents.
- 48:11And if you're a depositor, you pay no service fees, no points against your home loan.
- 48:17Your monthly payments may be taken out of your First National checking account.
- 48:20And with a First National mortgage, you get a liberal free payment privilege.
- 48:24In fact, you may pre-pay your loan in whole or in part without penalty in many cases, or with very low penalty.
- 48:30Come in and plan your home financing with an officer of First National Bank in St. Louis.
- 48:35Open 9 to 4, Monday through Friday, at the 511 Homie Street entrance downtown.
- 48:42All chance, even with a broken hand, you're beautiful. You know, you're absolutely right.
- 48:59It was Priscilla in relation to John Alden and Miles Sanderson.
- 49:04And it was Captain John Smith with reference to Pocahontas.
- 49:09We have gone 146 games, and our chance has finally been correct.
- 49:20Here's Bobby Tolan to lead it off, bottom of the third.
- 49:25The score, 2 to nothing in favor of St. Louis. Here's the pitch.
- 49:29Bobby Bob's foot fouls. One strike and no more.
- 49:34Tolan hitting 251. He was at the plate with runners at second and third in the second inning win.
- 49:45How the air tried to score on a short pass ball and was out.
- 49:52So he leads it off here on the bottom of the third. 2 to nothing, St. Louis.
- 50:02How the signal given? The pitch by Rick Weiss. High pass ball.
- 50:08That evens it up, a ball and a strike.
- 50:13Oh, and whether the crowd be big or small, our out-of-town friends are always here.
- 50:18One ball, one strike. The pitch, high and inside.
- 50:24They're here from Aberdeen, South Dakota tonight.

- 51:15Three balls, two strikes. Bobby Tolan waiting. We're in the third.
- 51:21Rick Weiss, pucks. Here's the pitch.
- 51:24On the back, had a good count. The count is full of 3 and 2.
- 51:42Three balls, two strikes. Stage 3 call. Bobby Tolan calling on those strikes.
- 51:50He's off the pitch with five. He's on his way to George's first stage.
- 51:58Here's the ladies celebrating their 80th birthday, Mrs. Johns of Decatur, Illinois, here tonight.

- 52:30Here's the pitch. High, pucks, foul. Out of play. Strike two.
- 52:38From Humboldt, Tennessee and from Millar, Missouri and from Mar-O-A, Illinois.
- 52:49I don't know what this means. Two strikes, no balls. I guess this is a hip-swing once.
- 52:55This note, I'll read it to you in a moment, the pitch.
- 52:59Takes it low. It says, enjoying the ball game are a bunch of flowers from New Bern, Tennessee.
- 53:11I didn't see him walk in. Two strikes and a ball. One out.
- 53:17The pitch. Way drive. They hit right center. The pitch is on the way.
- 53:22High, fly, deep right center, but it'll be caught.
- 53:26Johnny Brakes is over and he has it. Sepeda flies to Brakes.
- 53:31Orlando is falling into a slump. Here's McCarver.
- 53:44Sepeda is now two out of his last 21.
- 53:53Two men are out. A runner at first and here's McCarver.
- 53:57Tim bounced out at first time, hitting 3.05. Thirteen homers and 62 runs right at end.
- 54:13Here's the signal given.
- 54:18Wides at the belt. The pitch to McCarver. State right car. A fastball.

- 55:08St. Louis to Philadelphia, nothing.
- 55:15When you've had a tough day, and your work is through,
- 55:23There's a tiny lot left to do. There's just one thing to do when you do for a billion.
- 55:34When you do for a billion, Bush does it. Because Bush is food straight, the way beer was meant to be brewed.
- 55:51By Anheuser Bush, Bush does it.
- 55:57It delivers all the satisfaction a cold glass of beer can give you. You can't say beer better than Bush.
- 56:04Let's pause here for identification.
- 56:12Those are for Cardinal's Baseball Network.
- 56:14Two minutes till nine. KMOX, KMOX FM, signal it.
- 56:17White Owl Rangers, Invincibles, New Yorkers, yep, the stands are full of White Owl cigar fans.
- 56:22How come? Easy. White Owls are always with the men up. Temperature now 72.
- 56:26This is Harry Carrey and Jack Barton as we go on to the top of the fourth with Johnny Cavillerson taking the first pitch high.
- 56:41One ball, no strike. Cardinal bleeding two to nothing.
- 56:45Trying to reduce their magic number to seven. And maybe to six, the Giants should move.
- 56:52Pitch hung and fouled back. Count evens at a ball and a strike.
- 56:58We're in the fourth. Gibson has the one hit shut off.
- 57:07One ball, one strike. Red Sox won their ballgame three to one over Kansas City.
- 57:17No pitch. Line smash. One hop, Javier's got it over the first in time.
- 57:23Fully moved to his right. Grab Cavillerson's smash and one hop and threw him out.
- 57:29One gone, here's Tony guns off.
- 57:34Al K-line has hit a homer with a man on for Detroit in the seventh.
- 57:40They have taken a six to four lead over Baltimore.
- 57:44Things are a little bit different than they were a few minutes ago in the American League.
- 57:52A pitch to Gonzalez. High. One ball, no strikes. One out and nobody on top of the fourth.
- 57:59They're here from St. Petersburg, Florida to see the clock.
- 58:08A pitch. Line drive over Maxxie Pass station. Gonzalez winds the signal to left center.
- 58:17That is Tony Gonzalez's one thousandth hit of his career.

- 58:44They're here from Syracuse, New York pulling for the card.

- 58:57They're here from New Orleans tonight. The Ferguson-Coury League is here.
- 59:03One ball, no strikes. They'll pitch. And it's low and inside.
- 59:12A retired railroad man from Emonsdale, Indiana, 78 years old, is here tonight.
- 59:24The stretchers. Bowled it back.
- 59:30Cleveland batting in the night leads the White Sox 4-3 to Manila.
- 59:39Cleveland did not score, and Pena now is relieved for Cleveland in the bottom of the line.
- 59:44White Sox batting, trailing by one. Two balls and a strike to pitch.
- 59:49Double play ball to Hooley. He's got it one half. Maxxie wins. Orlando, too.
- 59:56That ball was hit like a bullet. A low line drive, a one half.
- 1:00:00Hooley stabs the ball, fired to Maxxie, who I relay to Chico.
- 1:00:05And it's no runs, one hit, no errors, nobody left. We're going to the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals, too.
- 1:00:11Philadelphia, nothing.
- 1:00:13Music.
- 1:00:36They're good, need no water, meaning it won't freeze after boil over. You get about 27 miles to go and it's like a 67 to 53 horsepower.
- 1:00:43Say that is dual brake, better life. Look, I'll leave the ice just in time.
- 1:00:47But they're a little thing.
- 1:00:48Great, I love little things. I'm a little thing. Look, I know the ropes, I want it. Where, do you mean, Tom?
- 1:00:53Lady, it takes time. Anyway, we're out of rent.
- 1:00:56I don't know what after when.
- 1:00:57Maybe a week. It depends.
- 1:00:59I will. I'll just leave it in for now.
- 1:01:01If you know what you are headed to Volkswagen, you can call Southland Volkswagen, Inc., 6000 Southlandburg Boulevard in San Diego.
- 1:01:10Coming out of the fourth. Cardinals leading two to nothing, trying to reduce the magic number to seven.
- 1:01:17Boy, that American League race, it sure changes.
- 1:01:22The twins have closed in to within one of the senators.
- 1:01:27Washington batting bottom of seven, four to three, Washington.
- 1:01:31Here's Gagliano doing a fine job. Here's the pitch.
- 1:01:35And it's a curve in there at strike call. One strike can over off.
- 1:01:41The curves have come back to tie Houston, three, three.
- 1:01:45And that's Leeda Blen at three to two on the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:01:50Here's the pitch.
- 1:01:52Ground ball headed for right. Another hit for Phil.
- 1:01:56Gagliano grounds a single in the short right.
- 1:02:00Boy, he's been doing a great job.
- 1:02:02His average is 230, but he started from around 170, so he's really raised his average.
- 1:02:11Out of the air of the batter. Nobody out. A runner at first. We're in the fourth.
- 1:02:25And he shows coaching at third. Dick Sisler at first.
- 1:02:30Out of signal.
- 1:02:32From the bow. The pitch. Curve ball long away. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:02:48Red Sox have already won their ball again.
- 1:02:52At this very moment, they lead the Twins by another half a game behind the Twins right now.
- 1:02:58One ball, no strikes. It's over to first, not a match.
- 1:03:02If the Twins lose, the two will be tied.
- 1:03:05If the Twins win, they'll still retain a one-game lead.
- 1:03:08Here's the pitch. Low. Two balls, no strikes on Hooley.
- 1:03:12A runner at first. Nobody out. Ball game in the fourth.
- 1:03:17Final game of the series tomorrow night.
- 1:03:20You know something?
- 1:03:25Yeah, the Cardinals could punch this pennant on the road.
- 1:03:30Tomorrow night might be their last chance to see them before they become champions.
- 1:03:34Two balls, no strikes. No pitch.
- 1:03:37High ball. Three.
- 1:03:41The Redbirds moving in on a two-million mark in home attendance.
- 1:03:50There's 65,000 away, and they'll have about 25,000 of it tonight.
- 1:03:57Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:04:00Runner at first.
- 1:04:02Here's the pitch. He walked him ball for.
- 1:04:06And the Cardinals have runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 1:04:10Already leading two to nothing.
- 1:04:14You know, with this beautiful weather prevailing,
- 1:04:17and the Cardinals heading for a road trip after tomorrow night,
- 1:04:25why don't you bring the family out tomorrow and see these Cardinals before they win the pennant?
- 1:04:32That's better than seeing them, I guess, after.
- 1:04:41Send them away to a rousing road trip by appearing here and cheering for them tomorrow night.
- 1:04:45Here's Maxwell. No pitch.
- 1:04:48Curve ball low. Ball wide.
- 1:04:51I think being here tomorrow night might be just like being here when they went clinched the pennant,
- 1:04:56because apparently it could happen on the road.
- 1:05:01Button the bell.
- 1:05:03No pitch.
- 1:05:04Fumble off middle. Face hit.
- 1:05:06A run maybe is going to score. Here he comes.
- 1:05:08Circles out of the end of third. You'll make it easily.
- 1:05:12Maxwell gets his second hit in a row.
- 1:05:15A singular center driving in his 38th run.
- 1:05:20The Cardinals lead three to nothing.
- 1:05:24And I'll bring up Bob Gibbons.
- 1:05:30You know, a 226 batter, I mean, doesn't sound too tremendous.
- 1:05:39But the little guy batting eighth has driven in now 39 runs,
- 1:05:46which is only a few lessons plus. He's had a great year.
- 1:05:54Kurt has driven in 45. Maxie has driven in now 39.
- 1:06:01That's only 11 less than Maris, and he's had a good year.
- 1:06:07Just to give you an idea, he's driven in Lawrence and Bill White as a filly.
- 1:06:15And here's Gibson with infield in, nobody out. Runners at first and third.
- 1:06:20The Y's get set.
- 1:06:24No pitch. Curve ball low.
- 1:06:29Does anybody have a 15-ron pool? You've got a chance to win it.
- 1:06:35Look at Cincinnati tonight. Four in the first, two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth.
- 1:06:44Runners at first and third.
- 1:06:51Maybe, maybe, maybe he hasn't been in.
- 1:06:54I'm not sure.
- 1:06:56Warren here with a line drive, hung up there in front of his dollars.
- 1:06:59I think like I did, he assumed there was a base that way off the bat.
- 1:07:03Because the guy that charged him only had a chance to catch him as it hung up there.
- 1:07:07But he's seen it in on one bounce, and that makes him now four to nothing.
- 1:07:12Nobody out, and Dick Elgwes is going to come in.
- 1:07:20And the new pitcher is Elgwes for the Phillies.
- 1:07:23Wise leads after picking three innings, allowed four on, he leaves two men on, with reach for a hit.
- 1:07:30Struck out three, walked one, and hit one.
- 1:07:33I want to tell you about the Cardinal yearbook again, which is still available.
- 1:07:36If you come to the ballpark, you can purchase it as a novelty stand, and if you want to order by mail, the cost is a dollar plus 35 cents for postage and handling.
- 1:07:45There's only one address to employ when you write for the Cardinal yearbook, which is 72 pages big, photos, facts, inside information, a lot of pictures, stories of the minor, and majorly Cardinal pictures.
- 1:07:59And here's the address, Stadium Publications, 350 Stadium Plaza, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1:08:06A dollar plus 35 cents for postage and handling, Stadium Publications, 350 Stadium Plaza, St. Louis, Missouri, for the 1967 Cardinal yearbook.
- 1:08:20Well, the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals are out in front, four to nothing.
- 1:08:23They have one or two first and second, and nobody out with Brock, Tolan, and Maris coming up, and the Phillies have brought in the left-handers.
- 1:08:31Minnesota did not score in the top of the eighth. Boy, that's a big ballgame for them.
- 1:08:40Here's Brock. One out of two left-handed batters.
- 1:08:48Into the stretch elsewhere, the pitch. They expect him to bunt. He takes low and outside.
- 1:08:54One ball, no strikes. The Cardinals trying to make it two in a row in this series.
- 1:09:01Boy, this one I always get a kick out of. Gals come to a ballgame.
- 1:09:08The husbands watch the ballgame, and the women don't even look at the field.
- 1:09:15One ball, no strikes. The pitch. And it's a curve outside. Ball two.
- 1:09:29Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:09:36And then they get home, and they say, Boy, what a wonderful ballgame it was.
- 1:09:42The poor husbands try to watch the field. Here's the pitch. Curve outside.
- 1:09:48The women don't pay any attention. There's a group in the booth right to the right of us. I won't mention any names.
- 1:09:55But the wives haven't looked at the field yet.
- 1:10:03Three balls, no strikes. Here's the pitch. Low and outside. The bases are loaded.
- 1:10:15Boy, here's a chance at a great inning. The bases loaded and nobody out. Two runs already in.
- 1:10:23And here's Kurt Schleppken of that for Bobby Tellman. The Cardinals are going for the offense here. Kurt Schlepp.
- 1:10:37Blood-bonding 323 with four homers and 45 RBI. Bases are loaded and nobody out. Two runs already in.
- 1:10:46The Cincinnati leads the Pirates 14 to 7 and the bottom is 6. Here's the fifth.
- 1:10:53Right away, it's a hit. One run is in. Gibson's going to stop at third.
- 1:10:59Kurt Schlepp lined a single just beyond Cookney Rojas's reach.
- 1:11:07That makes it five to nothing. Gibson's a third block at second, flooded first. Now for flood is 152nd hit of the year.
- 1:11:18And his 46th run about an effort. Here's Rod Jimenez. He's had a perfect night. 202. Five to nothing, St. Louis.
- 1:11:38Bases loaded. Here's the fifth. Grab a hole but strikes two Rojas. What's like a double play? Wine for one and white for two. Another one scores though.
- 1:11:49Maris will not be credited with a run about an in. That ball was hit right on the nose.
- 1:11:55A low line drive on one half to Rojas who flipped it to wine who related to white.
- 1:12:00So there's a runner third now with two outs. The Cardinals are leading six to nothing. And here's Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:12:08Two out of his last. 21 and he is due. Ah, they're going to walk him.
- 1:12:17They're going to walk him intentionally. They don't care about that super 21.
- 1:12:21They know that Orlando's more dangerous right now than ever because he's been in a little bit of a slump.
- 1:12:27So Cepeda will be intentionally passed. And I honestly believe that his little slump started with a multiplicity of bases on balls.
- 1:12:41In that Pittsburgh series, first game or third, they walked him almost every time he was up.
- 1:12:47And I think he kind of lost his touch as a result. One is the first and third. And here's McCarver.
- 1:12:56He's 0 for 2.
- 1:13:12One is the first and third. Ah, the signal.
- 1:13:30One is the first and third waiting. Here's the flip. Tim takes it low.
- 1:13:35Dick Ellsworth in a relief order. Oh, four runs in this inning have been charged to Rick Wise.
- 1:13:43So he has permitted six runs in the game.
- 1:13:50Ellsworth gets ready. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:13:58Dallas Green warming up on the bull fence of the Philly.
- 1:14:01Outside, ball two. Gagliano will be next.
- 1:14:06This is a nice man to bat in the inning. The Cardinals have scored four. They have two out. They have two on.
- 1:14:21You know, I think if the Giants lose tonight, the odds are the Cardinals will clinch it in Philadelphia.
- 1:14:28Next week, here's the fifth.
- 1:14:33Outside, ball three. If the Giants win tonight, I think the odds are the Cardinals will have a chance to clinch it at home starting Thursday night, September 21 against the Braves.
- 1:14:44We have a four-game series, a final home stand, Thursday, September 21, Friday 22, Saturday 23, and Sunday 24.
- 1:14:53And that's it at home until the World Series.
- 1:14:58And there's no telling when that will be because it's the American League.
- 1:15:03Ball four, the bases are loaded.
- 1:15:06You know, that American League can wind up in a four-way tie.
- 1:15:09They might be playing off just the American League until mid-October.
- 1:15:18And there's a big Leanna up there with the bases loaded. He's been hit by a pitch ball. He is single. He has scored two outs.
- 1:15:25He's the tenth man to bat in the inning. He started it off with a single right.
- 1:15:31The pitch by Ellsworth. Up and up. Bill White in foul territory. He's got it three times a side.
- 1:15:41He's had a big inning. Four runs. Four hits. No errors. Three left. The Cardinals are stranded sixth.
- 1:15:49And at the end of four, it's the Cardinals sixth, the Phillies nothing.
- 1:15:54We go on to the top of the fifth. The Cardinals, moving to a magic number of at least seven,
- 1:16:00and maybe six before this night is over, are leading six to nothing.
- 1:16:05Steps up there for the Phillies, and here to tell you all about it now is Jack Butts.
- 1:16:11Okay, Harry, thank you. There's a lot going on here this evening.
- 1:16:14This is a busy ball game with 11 hits. The Cardinals nine, two for the Phillies.
- 1:16:18Cardinals leading six-nothing. White leading off.
- 1:16:20And the ball is tied from Bob Gibson to start the fifth inning.
- 1:16:24And the other ball games are standing right along. Minnesota's batting in the ninth.
- 1:16:30The Cardinals trailing Washington by a couple of runs. Bill White courts one foul, pass first, and it's one and one.
- 1:16:37Second game of the doubleheaders starting between the Indians and the Light Sox.
- 1:16:40Cleveland won the first game, 4-3.
- 1:16:45Angels and the Yankees are playing a doubleheader, and the Angels won the first game.
- 1:16:50Detroit's out in front, 6-4 at the end of seven over Baltimore.
- 1:16:55Nobody on or out here in the fifth inning, and Bill White left-handed better than Xibalo.
- 1:16:59White grounded out his first time up.
- 1:17:06Cardinals are running the first, they're running the second, four on the fourth, and they lead six-nothing.
- 1:17:11The pitch foul back to the screen, two and two.
- 1:17:17Dallas Green, a six-ball right hander, is warming up out the full fence.
- 1:17:32Jim Lombard of the Red Sox won his 20th ball game of the year tonight, beating Kansas City 3-1.
- 1:17:40We wait for the 2-2 pitch to Bill White.
- 1:17:43It's the slider in on him, ball three.
- 1:17:47It'll be White, Dallaripple, and Wine, and if anybody gets down, the pitcher Ellsworth is due to come up.
- 1:17:59The pitch is fouled back again by White.
- 1:18:02A full count of three and two.
- 1:18:05The Reds have a loud one going, the score is 8-10, 15-7 at the end of six, favor the Reds.
- 1:18:14The pitch foul in the air behind the plate, McCarver has the play, and he's got the ball for the up.
- 1:18:30Bill White has fouled out to start the fifth inning.
- 1:18:32McCarver hauled it in, the batters play Dallaripple to catch your left-handed batter.
- 1:18:36He popped out his first time up.
- 1:18:44Game time tomorrow is 8 o'clock.
- 1:18:48Larry Jackson will go for the visitors, and Dick Hughes will be the cardinal pitcher.
- 1:18:53First one to Dallaripple is a little bit high.
- 1:18:57Gibson on the mound, leading 6-0 and trying for his 12th win of the year.
- 1:19:07Dallaripple takes a changeup curveball in there for called strike one and one.
- 1:19:11Gibson went up on the pitch and it drifted in there.
- 1:19:14Tomorrow our heroes will be taking his 15th win, he's the winningest cardinal pitcher of the year.
- 1:19:22The pitch one high, ball to two and one.
- 1:19:28They're waiting for that Minnesota final.
- 1:19:30They went into the ninth, trailing Washington 5-3.
- 1:19:33The pitch coming from Gibson, taken the roll by Dallaripple, three and one.
- 1:19:39McCarver steps on the plate umpire, Crawford works very close to the catcher, puts his hand on the catcher's back.
- 1:19:48The two got all tangled up on that last pitch.
- 1:19:50The three-one delivery, swung on his foul pass first, passed on Holt coaching down there, three and two.
- 1:20:06One out, nobody on, three and two on the batter.
- 1:20:09He had a three-two count on Dallaripe.
- 1:20:12That is three-two again on Dallaripple, swung on, grounded his second.
- 1:20:15How the air has it, the pitcher has to cover.
- 1:20:17He's out, Gibson got over off the mound, covered first and took the throw from out of the air.
- 1:20:22Four to one for the put out, two out.
- 1:20:25The hitter, Bobby Wise, grounded out his first time up.
- 1:20:28The right-handed hitter, the footer's off to a short stop.
- 1:20:35The Braves have been batting for quite a while on the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:20:38They went in trailing the Mets three-two.
- 1:20:40The Mets have used two different pitchers for their vendor.
- 1:20:46They're now on Taylor in the ninth inning.
- 1:20:51Gibson trying to set the Phillies down in order here.
- 1:20:53The fifth pitch is to Wine and throws low in the way ball-in.
- 1:21:01Atlanta score two in the ninth and beat the Mets four-three.
- 1:21:07The pitch swung on, hit the short, big hop to Maxwell, the throw to first, he's out.
- 1:21:12Wine is out, down in order go the Phillies in the fifth.
- 1:21:15It's now an official ball game as far as Bob Gibson is concerned.
- 1:21:18You'll recall he had to be taken out in the sixth inning the last time he picked when his arm tightened up.
- 1:21:23We go into the bottom of the fifth inning and the Cardinals lead the Phillies six-nil.
- 1:21:28Now becoming a major league player isn't something that happens overnight.
- 1:21:31All of us out here at this ballpark have spent a lot of time developing and improving.
- 1:21:36Beer is the same way.
- 1:21:37It takes time to brew a great beer, and that's why Bush is a great beer.
- 1:21:42It's brewed slowly, carefully, naturally, with patience and pride by an eyesore Bush.
- 1:21:49And you know they care as much about good beer as you and I do.
- 1:21:52Maybe right now it would be a good time to open a cold bush.
- 1:21:55You can't say beer better.
- 1:21:57Beer, Bush, you can't say beer better than Bush.
- 1:22:01When it's time to take it easy, time for a beer.
- 1:22:14Make it Bush.
- 1:22:16You can't say beer better than Bush.
- 1:22:20We're going to pause for identification before the Cardinals bat in the fifth inning.
- 1:22:29Dick Ellsworth is down the mounds of the Phillies in relief for Rick Wise.
- 1:22:33And out of here will be the Cardinal leadoff.
- 1:22:35And this is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 1:22:37932 Campbell Heights, Campbell Heights FM, St. Louis.
- 1:22:40Now get cry ballgame hot dogs, the hot dogs who are the winner beef.
- 1:22:44If you can't find them where you shop, ask your butcher.
- 1:22:46Cry ballgame hot dogs, 71 degrees.
- 1:22:57Javier leading off, facing a left-hander, Dick Ellsworth.
- 1:23:03He's been on base twice.
- 1:23:04He popped up this time.
- 1:23:05Cry ball in the right center.
- 1:23:07Callison drifts to his right and the right fielder makes the catch for the out.
- 1:23:10Javier jumped on the first one but fly it out.
- 1:23:13There's one going in the Cardinal fifth.
- 1:23:24Things to the plate, Dow Maxville has driven in two runs tonight.
- 1:23:30Max he doubled in the second, he's singled in the fourth, he's scored a run and driven in two and he takes the strike.
- 1:23:35Total guy batting 226.
- 1:23:37He just can't get that batting average up, can he?
- 1:23:40Now what a game he has played around shortstop for the past month or so.
- 1:23:44He has made high popping plays.
- 1:23:47Ball outside and he's made those plays look easy.
- 1:23:50He's no chill boat out there, he doesn't put on a big act.
- 1:23:54He either gets the ball or he doesn't.
- 1:23:58He's sparkled in Pittsburgh, made some plays here last night.
- 1:24:01Flies into the same spot that the ball was hit by Javier and Callison's going to get this one also.
- 1:24:07Two outs.
- 1:24:08Both Javier and Maxville have fly right in the batter is Bob Gibson.
- 1:24:13Gibson limps to the plate.
- 1:24:16He still walks with a perceptible limp, his right ankle is heavily taped as he pitches.
- 1:24:24But he and the Cardinals lead here in the fifth inning, 6-0.
- 1:24:28A Minnesota loss tonight to Washington.
- 1:24:32Strike call to Gibson.
- 1:24:34So the Red Sox are back in a first place tie.
- 1:24:38And the Tigers who are winning could be only one game out again.
- 1:24:42And the American League just won't shape up.
- 1:24:45The pitch coming, high.
- 1:24:47And the White Sox who lost the first game with their double header could actually gain a half game in the standings
- 1:24:53and be only two out if they can beat the Indians in the second game of their twin build.
- 1:24:575-4 Washington beats Minnesota.
- 1:25:00A ball and a strike to Conny Gibson with two out here.
- 1:25:03Third ball goes low from Dick Ellsworth.
- 1:25:06Ellsworth, 6-6 for the year.
- 1:25:11All six Cardinals run, charges to the Philly starter, Rick Wise.
- 1:25:20Gibson, drove in a run with a single, made it across the plate.
- 1:25:24One out of two.
- 1:25:25Line drive to center fielder and that is a face hit in front of Johnny Briggs, the center fielder.
- 1:25:30Gibson gets his second hit of the night, he's down with two out.
- 1:25:36They had 6,000 people in Washington this evening.
- 1:25:42To watch the Senators beat the Twins, the Twins scored a run on the night.
- 1:25:49And the home run hit by Frank Howard in the eighth inning turned out to be the difference in the game.
- 1:25:58Bertano is the winner and Merritt DeLuzer, that's one of the better pitchers of the Twins this year, Jim Merritt.
- 1:26:03His record is now 12-5.
- 1:26:07Brock is the batter with two out.
- 1:26:10Third in there, called strike.
- 1:26:19Cardinals have banged out ten hits in this ballgame.
- 1:26:24And they lead 6-0, there have been no errors in the game.
- 1:26:27Brock caps one to third.
- 1:26:29Tough play for Tony Taylor, throws, he's out.
- 1:26:32Pretty close play, but Tony Taylor from third base throws out to the broad.
- 1:26:36No runs, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 1:26:38The Cardinals have stranded seven.
- 1:26:40Five full innings have been played and the Cardinals lead the Phillies 6-0.
- 1:26:44I've got my friend sitting here today.
- 1:26:46Yes sir, the whiteout girl.
- 1:26:48Tell me, any new rules you'd like to see brought into the game?
- 1:26:51I'm the one.
- 1:26:53The ballgame goes into the sixth.
- 1:26:58Detroit won their game, they pick up a full game on Minnesota.
- 1:27:09So the Tigers are only one game out again in that American League race,
- 1:27:16winning 6-4 over Baltimore.
- 1:27:25Gibson is down the mound and Chuck Hiller, an infielder, formerly of the Giants in the Mets,
- 1:27:29Hiller is batting for Ellsworth.
- 1:27:32Leading off in the sixth inning, Chuck, a little left-handed batter,
- 1:27:36hasn't played too much for the Phillies.
- 1:27:38He's an infielder, second baseman primarily.
- 1:27:40Gibson's pitch to him is a strike call.
- 1:27:43Bob kept it away and it's 1-1.
- 1:27:50It'll be Hiller, Rojas, and Taylor.
- 1:27:54The 1-1 from Gibson, grounded to Sepeta.
- 1:27:58Big hop, he makes the play himself.
- 1:28:00One out, Sepeta, shot it in and stepped on the bag,
- 1:28:04retiring Chuck Hiller on a ground ball to the right side.
- 1:28:06There's one out in the batter, Rojas who is grounded out and won.
- 1:28:12Finals lead 6-0, sixth inning.
- 1:28:15Only two hits off of Bob Gibson in the game.
- 1:28:18He's allowed one walk.
- 1:28:20He's had only two strikeouts.
- 1:28:24It's Dimegan, the Phillies, hit the ball,
- 1:28:26and finally hitting the ball on the ground.
- 1:28:30Max Alves has done a home run on the first inning for Cleveland,
- 1:28:33so they're out in front of the White Sox in the second game with a double header.
- 1:28:37After Cleveland won the first game, 4-3.
- 1:28:44Rojas, a face hit to left.
- 1:28:46Rojas lines a single to the left, fielded by Brock.
- 1:28:49The Philly leadoff hitter is on there with one out.
- 1:28:56And the batter is Tony Taylor.
- 1:28:58He's 0-2.
- 1:28:59He's flying to center.
- 1:29:00He's struck out.
- 1:29:01The new pitcher for Philadelphia in the sixth inning will be Dallas Green.
- 1:29:16Tony Taylor, the batter.
- 1:29:19Gibson's pitch is low.
- 1:29:22McCarver caught that one in the webbing of the glove, did not know he had it.
- 1:29:24He started to look around for the ball.
- 1:29:26It was in the midst.
- 1:29:28Ball on.
- 1:29:34Now the pitch is a strike call.
- 1:29:38With Gibson going into the sixth inning here,
- 1:29:41Cardinals get a pitcher ready down on the bullpen.
- 1:29:43And Larry Gaster starts to loosen up.
- 1:29:50The pitch coming to Taylor is low for a ball.
- 1:29:52Fault is 2-1.
- 1:29:54Rojas the first one out.
- 1:29:57Fortunately in this situation with Rojas running and Taylor batting,
- 1:30:00you have to be very concerned about a hit and run.
- 1:30:03With the Phillies trailing 6-0, they probably will play it close.
- 1:30:08The pitch, swung on, double play ball to Maxwell.
- 1:30:13Over out of air a lot of times.
- 1:30:17And that's the reason ball clubs like to hit and run.
- 1:30:20But they couldn't do it because they were trailing by so many runs.
- 1:30:23They had to have Taylor just swinging away.
- 1:30:25He grounded it sharply to Maxwell.
- 1:30:29Over out of the air and the bully on the
- 1:30:30the DT, the second reeled off behind Gibson tonight in the sixth of Philadelphia.
- 1:30:38The double play and nobody left.
- 1:30:39The Cardinals come to bat in their sixth and they lead the Phillies 6-0.

- 1:31:54This ballgame now goes into the Cardinal 6 thing and Dallas Green is down the mound.
- 1:32:01He follows Rick Wise, a right-hander, and Dick Ellsworth, a left-hander to the mound.
- 1:32:06Green a right-hander.
- 1:32:13He's been in and out of the Philadelphia organization and up and down.
- 1:32:176-5 and he was worried until called up by the Phillies that he wouldn't get that necessary five years in
- 1:32:25to qualify for the baseball pension, but he qualifies now.
- 1:32:29The pitch to Fluck.
- 1:32:31Tolan started in center field.
- 1:32:34The Cardinals came up with a key spot and told them to put it against the left-hander.
- 1:32:38Red went to Fluck.
- 1:32:40Fluck came through with a base hit and RBI 1-1.
- 1:32:44Sidearm delivery outside and a bit high ball to him.
- 1:32:58Fluck leading off.
- 1:32:59Marist will follow and then Cepeda.
- 1:33:03Outside, back to the screen as Dowryupala catcher couldn't get to it.
- 1:33:073-0.
- 1:33:19They had 18,000 people in Detroit for that ball game this evening, which the Tigers won.
- 1:33:23Strike called to Fluck, 3-1.
- 1:33:26And the Tiger victory puts them within one game of Minnesota, the Twins lost.
- 1:33:31Boston 1 and they're back in a first place tie with Minnesota.
- 1:33:37Launching ball to Third by Fluck.
- 1:33:39Taylor has to back up, makes a quick throw, he's out.
- 1:33:42A third baseman never likes to back up on a ball, but once in a while you have to play it that way
- 1:33:47and Taylor, upon backing up, got rid of it in a hurry and threw Fluck out.
- 1:33:52The hitter is Marist who's 2 for 3 tonight and an RBI.
- 1:34:06Marist, the left-hander, follow-on.
- 1:34:08Lowie Jasder continues to throw on the cardinal bullpen, an indication that she needs some Billy Muppet
- 1:34:14as pitching coach will not go much further with Bob Gibson who's already pitched six shutout innings
- 1:34:20and a three-hitter.
- 1:34:22Title play, 6-0.
- 1:34:24The delivery to Marist, swung on, followed off of Marist's leg, 1-1.
- 1:34:37Another sign out there in the stands is Shiloh, Illinois, wind cut.
- 1:34:46So glad the folks from that town are on hand and enjoying the ball game tonight.
- 1:34:50The pitch to Marist, swung on, fouled out of play to the left.
- 1:34:56One out and nobody on in the sixth.
- 1:34:58The cardinal scored a run in the first, a run in the second, four in the fourth.
- 1:35:02Chases the Philadelphia starter and Dallas Green is now on the mound for the visitors.
- 1:35:10Green has no record for the year.
- 1:35:13Now rimple to the mound to talk to him and Marist talks for the plate on fire.
- 1:35:25Ray Sedecki is going to pitch tonight.
- 1:35:29He goes for the Giants against John Sutton of the Dodgers.
- 1:35:36Ball outside to Marist, 2-2.
- 1:35:37The Giants are getting along rather well with Omar Shaw, I think.
- 1:35:41The game of the year has been.
- 1:35:49The 2-2 to Marist.
- 1:35:51Ball free, high and away, pole count three and zero.
- 1:36:02The Reds are now batting in the bottom of the eighth, leading the Pirates 15-7.
- 1:36:07Three-two pitch coming to Rogers.
- 1:36:11Straight call on the outside corner.
- 1:36:13Marist is called out as Green put a fastball over the outside corner.
- 1:36:19Pulled the second out of the inning, bringing up Cepeda with a base of empty.
- 1:36:34It's all for two in the game.
- 1:36:37He'd like to touch one off right here.
- 1:36:40Takes a strike, a slider.
- 1:36:42He's struck out, fly to center and they put him on with a walk.
- 1:36:49Cubs have scored a run in the sixth.
- 1:36:50They lead Houston now 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth at Houston.
- 1:36:54The Reds take a ball, started to go, held up, the ball went low, one and one.
- 1:37:09One ball, one strike, two out, nobody on.
- 1:37:11Cepeda jumps back from ball two.
- 1:37:16Game time tomorrow, 8 o'clock, and after tomorrow only four games remaining at all.
- 1:37:28Swung on, grounded at third.
- 1:37:30Tony Taylor has it and Cepeda is out.
- 1:37:33And that's the first time the Cardinals have gone down in order in the inning.
- 1:37:37Taylor threw out two and in between Marist was called out on strike.
- 1:37:40Dallas Green breezes through the sixth inning and at the end of sixth,
- 1:37:44the Cardinals lead for about your sixth and other.
- 1:37:47Have more fun under the hot summer sun.
- 1:37:50Cool it with Bush.
- 1:38:13When you're out there under the hot summer sun working up at first, wait for a push.
- 1:38:18Nothing beats a frosty cold Bush to take the heat off.
- 1:38:22It cools you quick and easy, delivers all the satisfaction a cold beer can give you.
- 1:38:28When you're due for a beer, Bush does.
- 1:38:31Cool it this summer with a frosty cold bottle or can of Bush.
- 1:38:35You can't say beer is better than Bush.
- 1:38:53Sevens running now, and even though Mary Gaster continues to throw on the bullpen,
- 1:38:58Bob Gibson goes to the mound to work the seventh.
- 1:39:00Cardinals lead six-nothing.
- 1:39:01Gibson has a three-hitter going and Johnny Callison leads off.
- 1:39:05Left-handed batter and the ball is high.
- 1:39:07Callison has one of the three hits.
- 1:39:11Singled, grounded out down the air.
- 1:39:15Gibson with one walk, two strikeouts and three hits in the game.
- 1:39:18He's been the boss.
- 1:39:20He pitches.
- 1:39:21Callison swings, throws it into right center.
- 1:39:23Marist on the run, grabs the ball with one hand.
- 1:39:28There's been a few well-aimed balls against Gibby tonight, but right at somebody,
- 1:39:32there was another right there.
- 1:39:34Line drive to Marist and right field.
- 1:39:4119,932 paid.
- 1:39:473432 youngsters not hollered.
- 1:39:5323,364 total.
- 1:40:05Conny Gonzalez is the batter and Gibson gets out in front of him.
- 1:40:14And a ball to Gonzalez.
- 1:40:16Gonzalez is one for two.
- 1:40:17The Cardinals are going to have to average some 9,000 people in their remaining five
- 1:40:21states to reach the two million mark.
- 1:40:24Gonzalez with one out bounces one foul off to the right, running the count to one and two.
- 1:40:28We're in the sevens and the Cardinals lead six-nothing on a very pleasant baseball evening.
- 1:40:33A breeze blowing.
- 1:40:37It was around 80 in St. Louis today.
- 1:40:39Imagine it's right at the 70 mark now.
- 1:40:45Gibson out in front of his hitter and one of the leading hitters in the league,
- 1:40:48Gonzalez with one for two.
- 1:40:51Outside, Gonzalez has been playing every day and he used to be platoon.
- 1:40:56Hitting all the against right-handers has gone wild.
- 1:41:01For many batting 350, Gonzalez 342 at the start of the evening's play.
- 1:41:05Then subpoenaed at 330 starts.
- 1:41:10The 2-2 delivery.
- 1:41:12Base hit in the center field.
- 1:41:14Gonzalez singles here with one out,
- 1:41:16over and up with the ball and Gonzalez stops at first base.
- 1:41:20Clark playing center still has to underhand the ball in.
- 1:41:23He's getting pretty good at it.
- 1:41:27His arm seems to be getting a little stronger.
- 1:41:31The hitter is Johnny Brakes.
- 1:41:36Strong left-handed hitter.
- 1:41:39He was tapped out to the pitcher and grounded sharply into a double play.
- 1:41:43Gonzalez with strike one off the foot of McCarver.
- 1:41:47Ball hit McCarver's shin guard and then rolled right down the third base foul line to gag Leano.
- 1:41:55Pittsburgh batting in the ninth inning trailing Cincinnati 15 to 7.
- 1:42:00The Pirates are already mathematically eliminated from the pennant race.
- 1:42:05Brakes, takes the ball, fast ball and sunk low and away.
- 1:42:11Sunk low and away or sank low and away?
- 1:42:15Make a dip.
- 1:42:19A ball and a strike to the hitter.
- 1:42:22Runner at first, one out.
- 1:42:24There's a high foul ball down on the right field corner.
- 1:42:27Souvenir for somebody who's going to get it.
- 1:42:32Gibson out in front of Brakes now, one and two.
- 1:42:35On deck, Bill White.
- 1:42:40A little of their batting order, all left-handed hitters.
- 1:42:42Skallison, Gonzalez, Brakes, White and Dallarimble.
- 1:42:45There's a fly ball, a short left center.
- 1:42:47Flood was playing deep.
- 1:42:48He's on the run and he can't get it.
- 1:42:50That's the ball.
- 1:42:51And it's a base hit and the runners are on it first and second.
- 1:42:54Flood was playing deep and around to the right and the ball was hit.
- 1:42:57Somewhat into left center and Flood couldn't get it.
- 1:42:59Cheney comes out and Gibson may lead with one out here in the seventh inning.
- 1:43:05It was in the sixth inning over in New York when he was relieved.
- 1:43:09And he reported that his arm tightened up the inside of the elbow.
- 1:43:16So Red comes to the mound and he has two pitchers warming up,
- 1:43:21a left-hander Jaster and a right-hander Torres.
- 1:43:24And he wants the south far out Jaster.
- 1:43:28And Mike Torres continues to throw.
- 1:43:32So Gibson pitched, six and a third, no runs yet, five hits.
- 1:43:38He's struck out two and he wants one.
- 1:43:42And he gives way to Larry Jaster who's trying to find himself after struggling a bit in the starting assignment.
- 1:43:49And Jaster comes into the ball game with White and then Dowryffle coming up.
- 1:43:54Runners down at first and second and only one out.
- 1:43:56Seventh inning and the Cardinals leading six-nothing.
- 1:43:59The fans of Clare Gibson, fine round of applause as he leaves.
- 1:44:21We have a very good chance of picking up.
- 1:44:28It's a false victory of the year.
- 1:44:31You have to look and make sure.
- 1:44:33And while Larry Jaster warmed up and gets ready to pitch to Bill White, we're going to pause for identification.
- 1:44:38So let's get a pitcher ready down there, Bullpen, Dick Hall, and Mike Torres, the right-hander,
- 1:44:42is now joined by Ron Willis, the right-hander, and the Cardinal, Bullpen.
- 1:44:45So a lot of things happening out here.
- 1:44:46This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 1:44:48Four minutes till ten, KMOX, KMOX-FM, St. Louis.
- 1:44:51Want to add a special touch to your meal to please the family or impress someone?
- 1:44:55Serve half the olives, the olives that come only from DeMille.
- 1:44:59Temperature, seven.
- 1:45:07Two-hundred and only one out.
- 1:45:08Bill White standing off to the side of the plate.
- 1:45:11Counting and waiting how he's going to get his first hit of the night.
- 1:45:14He's up for two.
- 1:45:15Down to the second, followed off to the catcher, and he's the first man to face Larry Jaster.
- 1:45:20Jaster's still taking his warm-up touch.
- 1:45:25Minnesota was defeated tonight.
- 1:45:27The Red Sox won over Kansas City and moved into a first-place tie.
- 1:45:31The Tigers won, and they're only one game up.
- 1:45:35The White Sox lost their first game to Cleveland, and they're still two and a half up.
- 1:45:41The American League on a nutshell.
- 1:45:43They move Kurt Flood into straightaway center field.
- 1:45:48More and more we've seen Tim McCarver this year take charge behind the plate
- 1:45:52and directing defensive traffic for the Cardinals.
- 1:45:55The pitch coming to Bill White now, and he swings and misses.
- 1:45:58Strike one.
- 1:46:03White Sox are now trailing two-nothing in their second game.
- 1:46:06Alvarez and Fuller at home are to Cleveland.
- 1:46:09So the White Sox are on their way to a double defeat, although it's early in the night, Captain.
- 1:46:14The next pitch to Bill White from Larry is five with a fastball, one and one.
- 1:46:24Two on and only one out.
- 1:46:25The Cardinals here would like to reel off their third double play of the night
- 1:46:28and keep the goose eggs up on the scoreboard for the visiting Phillies.
- 1:46:35The grip pace runners, Gonzales at second and Briggs at first.
- 1:46:38White's a batter on one-one.
- 1:46:40He fouls it back to the screen, and now Jaster's out in front of them, one and two.
- 1:46:43Bob Gibson in sixth in a third inning.
- 1:46:46Bob no runs but leaves two men on.
- 1:46:48Five hits, struck out two and walked one.
- 1:46:55And look good doing it.
- 1:46:56Throwing hard, throwing free and easy.
- 1:47:02One ball, two strikes.
- 1:47:03Jaster delivers to White and a high pop fly on the infield.
- 1:47:07The batter's automatically out on the infield out, and Gangliano catches the ball to God.
- 1:47:12Bill White is retired by Jaster, two men out.
- 1:47:15And now Gene Oliver comes up to bat for Dow Ripple.
- 1:47:20Mike Torres is no longer song in the bullpen.
- 1:47:24Ron Wallace is, along with Joe Hunter.
- 1:47:30Being the devilish sort that I am, I was hoping that Torres would come into the game
- 1:47:36and Oliver being the expressive gentleman he is, would have really saved something.
- 1:47:41He's going to bat for Dow Ripple.
- 1:47:43Dow Ripple was 0 for 2.
- 1:47:49And Gene Oliver, the former Cardinal, has started this year with Atlanta.
- 1:47:54Is that the plate with two on, two out?
- 1:47:57Jaster will try to get them and preserve the shutout.
- 1:48:04First delivery to Gene, ball for a ball to the right-handed hitter from Moline, Illinois.
- 1:48:12He wants the umpire to check the baseball.
- 1:48:18Saveki for the Giants tonight and Sutton for the Dodgers.
- 1:48:22That ball game just started.
- 1:48:25The home half of the 7th, Cardinals leading 6-0.
- 1:48:43The Cincinnati-Pitchford game is over.
- 1:48:45Pittsburgh had 16 hits and Cincinnati had 23.
- 1:48:4939 hits in the game and Cincinnati won it 15-7.
- 1:48:58The winner was Bob Lee who started and the loser was Veal.
- 1:49:03No year you look for that Veal to win 20, but never does.
- 1:49:09Well, not too many do Jack.
- 1:49:11Yeah, but a throw like Veal, a throw like that gets off to a good start.
- 1:49:17He's had a crack at 20, but never quite does it.
- 1:49:24Is that a chain letter you got?
- 1:49:28McConaughey leads off.
- 1:49:30Dallas Green who set the Cardinals down in order in the 6th inning.
- 1:49:33Pitchers to 10 on the 7th and the first pitch is a ball.
- 1:49:37Jack, here's the guy who sends a $20 bill and he wants 10 seats near the infield for one of the weekend World Series games.
- 1:49:44I'll do it.
- 1:49:47Great call.
- 1:49:48He's been here 23 years, ought to be able to manage something like that.
- 1:49:51It just so happens that the price for ticket is $12.
- 1:49:55If I get him 10 seats, it only cost me $100 because he sent me 20.
- 1:50:00You got it.
- 1:50:01I got the chance.
- 1:50:04The pitch coming.
- 1:50:06Maccaro draws one and it's there down under the right field corner for next to base not.
- 1:50:10Tim heads for a second, Callison up with a ball and McConaughey has a leadoff double here in the 7th inning.
- 1:50:16And that's his first hit of the night.
- 1:50:19Tim needed that one to keep the batting average up.
- 1:50:21He was batting 305 at the start of the night.
- 1:50:27Jack, just excuse me, but this is a damn position.
- 1:50:32This is from a Lieutenant Commander who's coming home from Vietnam on the 20th.
- 1:50:38Now we're going to...
- 1:50:41Well, now I feel a little more sorry about it, but I still don't have $140.
- 1:50:47The batter is Gagliano with an oner at second.
- 1:50:57The pitch.
- 1:50:58Great call.
- 1:51:03Bill has had a good night. He's been on base twice, hit by a pitch, and he hung in the ballgame.
- 1:51:08They wanted to take him out, but he stayed in.
- 1:51:10He later's single and popped out. He has one out of two.
- 1:51:13Runner at second, nobody out. Trying to drive in his methods.
- 1:51:15But there's a long fly ball to left near the track, back near the wall.
- 1:51:18Ganvales and he's got it.
- 1:51:21Maccaro tags up a second but cannot advance.
- 1:51:24Gagliano made a bid for his third home run of the year and was about three feet shy.
- 1:51:30He sent Ganvales into the very corner of the ballpark, back in the track.
- 1:51:34He could have gone about one more step.
- 1:51:37He made the catch for the first out.
- 1:51:39The hitter is out of the air.
- 1:51:43At the end of seven and eight.
- 1:51:45The Cubs lead Houston 4-3.
- 1:51:47That's the score by which Atlanta defeated the Mets 4-3.
- 1:51:50Giants just starting in Los Angeles and Cincinnati won over Pittsburgh 15-7.
- 1:51:55That's what's happening elsewhere in the National League.
- 1:51:59American League, Minnesota lost.
- 1:52:01Red Sox won and moved into a first place tie.
- 1:52:03The Tigers won their only one game out.
- 1:52:05Fly ball to center by Avier.
- 1:52:07Briggs is there.
- 1:52:08Maccaro will not advance.
- 1:52:10There's the catch and Tim back to second with two outs.
- 1:52:12So the leadoff double may be wasted.
- 1:52:14It's up to Maxville who already has contributed with two out of three.
- 1:52:22Maxey has two RBIs tonight.
- 1:52:24Gibson has one, Flood one, Maris one, and another scored while a double play was being reeled off by the Phillies.
- 1:52:31Maxville has doubled, single, and fly to right.
- 1:52:42First ball is low, Giants.
- 1:52:45The Angels are batting in the ninth of the second game, threading the Yankees 2-1.
- 1:52:49The Angels won the first game in extra innings, 2-1.
- 1:52:54So if it stays like that, the Yanks and Angels will split.
- 1:52:57The Angels will pick up a half game.
- 1:52:59Maxville takes the curve over with low.
- 1:53:02Gene Oliver, after batting for Dowry and Bullish, taking over behind the plate.
- 1:53:09Grant Jackson, a left-hander, starts to warm up in the Philadelphia Bullpen.
- 1:53:13And Mike Torres continues to warm up for the Cardinals.
- 1:53:18Two balls, no strikes, all three.
- 1:53:22So Larry Jackson may get a chance to hit with men on base.
- 1:53:31Three out of Maxville.
- 1:53:33Wonder if he'll be hitting.
- 1:53:35You doubt it. Jackson's a pretty good hitter.
- 1:53:39He was playing and he grounds it to third.
- 1:53:41Taylor has it, throws them out, and the Yankees over.
- 1:53:44I don't know if Maxville ever swung on three and oh before, but they gave him a green light that time.
- 1:53:48And he grounded it to third.
- 1:53:50So the leadoff double by McCarver is wasted in the seventh.
- 1:53:52Now runs one hit, no errors in one left.
- 1:53:54The Cardinals have left eight.
- 1:53:56Seven finds have been played, and the Cardinals lead Philadelphia 6 to nothing.
- 1:54:00You know, any little leaguer can tell you the difference between a slider and a curve.
- 1:54:03The language of baseball isn't any mystery to even the youngest Cardinals fan.
- 1:54:07But the language of tires.
- 1:54:08Now there's a mystery even adults can't unravel.
- 1:54:11All that gibberish about cords and triple-ply weightings.
- 1:54:13Well, that's why BF Goodrich came up with a tire value calculator.
- 1:54:17It translates all that confusing tire talk into seven simple questions.
- 1:54:21It asks you how much driving you do and on what kind of road.
- 1:54:24It asks you how you drive and how long you plan to keep your car.
- 1:54:27Then it recommends a tough BFG tire to match your type of driving.
- 1:54:30The BFG tire value calculator saves both time and talk.
- 1:54:34But best of all, it can actually save you money because it never recommends more tires than you need.
- 1:54:39You'll find the tire value calculator only at your BF Goodrich dealer.
- 1:54:42So stop by the BF Goodrich dealer or store near a few and put a stop to the serious tire talk.
- 1:54:48We go into the top of the eighth.
- 1:54:54The Cardinals are still out in front, fixed to nothing.
- 1:54:57Larry Jaskers is a relief of Bob Gibson.
- 1:55:00Givy was just great so far tonight.
- 1:55:03Such a big improvement over his first start when he wasn't bad either.
- 1:55:10And he'll get another three, two or three, maybe four starts.
- 1:55:15He might just wind up being the hero of the World Series before it's all over.
- 1:55:19Here's Bobby Wine, the shortstop.
- 1:55:21Fixed to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:55:23Larry Jaskers fits.
- 1:55:25Swung on, fly ball, center field, Kurt Lutz.
- 1:55:28He could catch this one blindfolded, one out.
- 1:55:31Get out.
- 1:55:34I've just opened up a few more letters.
- 1:55:36And likewise, they're from service men.
- 1:55:40But you know, honestly, we just simply do not have a thing to do with the World Series tickets.
- 1:55:51The lining tours and especially sending money is what I wish you wouldn't because things can happen at the door.
- 1:55:58And we can't get the tickets for you anyhow.
- 1:56:09This is Billy Cowan.
- 1:56:11Pinch hitter hits a ground ball.
- 1:56:12Yagliano's got it over the first inside.
- 1:56:15Two up, two down.
- 1:56:16Larry Jaskers retired four in a row.
- 1:56:19The score, fixed to nothing in favor of the Cardinals, who will make their magic number seven.
- 1:56:25San Francisco and Los Angeles just getting started.
- 1:56:29Should the Giants lose, by the way, the magic number then would be seven with a chance to make it six tomorrow.
- 1:56:37And then we go on the road for six games.
- 1:56:40This cookie rojas, the pitch is low, ball one.
- 1:56:44One ball, no strikes.
- 1:56:52Two balls, nothing in favor of the Redbirds.
- 1:56:55Good flag of the National League office on hand.
- 1:56:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:57:00Fast ball, a little bit high.
- 1:57:02Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:57:09The White Sox in danger of losing a double header.
- 1:57:12Here's the pitch.
- 1:57:13Strike call.
- 1:57:14Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:57:15Jaskers delivers to White and a high pop fly on the infield.
- 1:57:20Jaskers is quickly out on the infield out and Gangliano catches the ball, two-one.
- 1:57:24Bill White is retired by Jaskers, two-one out.
- 1:57:27And now Dean Oliver comes up the bat for Dow Ripple.
- 1:57:32Mike Torres is no longer thawing in the bullpen.
- 1:57:35Ron Willis is, along with Joe Hunter.
- 1:57:42Being the devilish sort that I am, I was hoping that Torres would come in at the game
- 1:57:47and Oliver being the expressive gentleman he is, would have really made something.
- 1:57:53He's going to bat for Dow Ripple.
- 1:57:55Dow Ripple was 0-2.
- 1:58:01And Dean Oliver, the former Cardinal, has started this year with Atlanta.
- 1:58:05Is that the plate with two-on, two-out?
- 1:58:09Jaskers will try to get him and preserve the shutout.
- 1:58:16First delivery to Dean, ball for a ball to the right-handed hitter from Moline, Illinois.
- 1:58:23He wants the umpire to check the baseball.
- 1:58:29Symmetry for the Giants tonight and something for the Dodgers.
- 1:58:33That ballgame just started.
- 1:58:45The count of the home half of the 7th, Cardinal leading 6-7.
- 1:58:54The Cincinnati-Pitchford game is over.
- 1:58:57Pittsburgh had 16 hits and Cincinnati had 23.
- 1:59:0139 hits in the game and Cincinnati won it 15-7.
- 1:59:10The winner was Bob Lee who started and the loser was Veal.
- 1:59:15Every year you look for that Veal to win 20, but it never does.
- 1:59:20Well, not too many do, Jack.
- 1:59:23Yeah, but throwing like Veal, a throw like that gets off to a good start.
- 1:59:28Always has a crack at 20, but never quite does it.
- 1:59:36Is that a chain letter yet?
- 1:59:40McCarroll leads off.
- 1:59:42Dallas Green who set the Cardinals down in order in the 6-9.
- 1:59:45Pitchers to 10 on the 7th and the first pitch is the ball.
- 1:59:49Jack, here's a guy who sends a $20 bill and he wants 10 seats near the infield for one of the weekend World Series games.
- 1:59:56That'll do it.
- 1:59:58Shacov.
- 1:59:59He's been here 23 years. He ought to be able to manage something like that.
- 2:00:02It also happens that the price per ticket is $12.
- 2:00:07If I get him 10 seats, it only costs me 100 because he sent me 20.
- 2:00:12You got it.
- 2:00:13I got the charge.
- 2:00:16The pitch coming. McCarroll draws one and it's there down under the right field corner for next to base knock.
- 2:00:22Kim heads for second.
- 2:00:23Callison up with the ball and McCarroll has a leadoff double here in the 7th inning.
- 2:00:27And that's his first hit of the night.
- 2:00:31He's got one to keep that batting average up. He was batting 305 at the start of the night.
- 2:00:38Jack, just excuse me, but this is, I've been a little facetious.
- 2:00:43This is from a Lieutenant Commander who's coming home from Vietnam on the 20th.
- 2:00:49Ah, now we're going to do it.
- 2:00:52Well, now I feel a little more sorry about it, but I still don't have $140.
- 2:00:59The batter is Gagliano with her on her second.
- 2:01:09The pitch. Strike call.
- 2:01:15Still has had a good night.
- 2:01:17Then on base twice hit by a pitch and he hung in the ballgame.
- 2:01:20They wanted to take him out, but he stayed in.
- 2:01:22He later singled him and popped out. He has one out of two.
- 2:01:25Runner at second, nobody out.
- 2:01:26He's driving his Memphis buddy. There's a long fly ball to the left near the track, back near the wall.
- 2:01:30Gonzalez and he's got it.
- 2:01:32McCover tags up at second but cannot advance.
- 2:01:35Gagliano made a bid for his third home run of the year and was about three feet shy.
- 2:01:42He sent Gonzalez into the very corner of the ballpark, back in the track.
- 2:01:46He could have gone about one more step.
- 2:01:48He made the catch for the first out.
- 2:01:51The hitter is out of here.
- 2:01:55At the end of seven and eight, McCubs lead Houston 4-3.
- 2:01:58That's the score by which Atlanta defeated the Mets 4-3.
- 2:02:02Giants just starting in Los Angeles and Cincinnati won over Pittsburgh 15-7.
- 2:02:07That's what's happening elsewhere in the National League.
- 2:02:10American League, Minnesota lost. Red Sox won and moved into a first place tie.
- 2:02:14The Tigers won their only one game out.
- 2:02:17Fly ball to center by Alviere. Breaks is there.
- 2:02:20MacCover will not advance.
- 2:02:21There's the catch and Tim back to second with two out.
- 2:02:24So the leadoff double may be wasted. It's up to Maxville, who already has contributed with two out of three.
- 2:02:34Maxey has two RBIs tonight.
- 2:02:36Gibson has one.
- 2:02:37Blood won.
- 2:02:38Marist won and another scored while a double play was being reeled off by the Phillies.
- 2:02:43Maxville has doubled, single and fly to right.
- 2:02:54First ball is low, Jim.
- 2:02:56The Angels are batting in the ninth of the second game, threading the Yankees 2-1.
- 2:03:00The Angels won the first game in extra innings 2-1.
- 2:03:05So if it stays like that, the Yanks and Angels will split.
- 2:03:08The Angels will pick up a half game.
- 2:03:11Maxville takes the curve over with low.
- 2:03:13Gene Oliver, after batting for Dowry and Bullish, taking over behind the plate.
- 2:03:21Grant Jackson, the left-hander, starts to warm up in the Philadelphia Bullpen.
- 2:03:24And Mike Torres continues to warm up for the Cardinals.
- 2:03:30Two balls, no strikes. All three.
- 2:03:34Now Larry Jackson may get a chance to hit with Menon Bay.
- 2:03:43Three-hull to Maxville. I wonder if he'll be hitting.
- 2:03:47He doubted.
- 2:03:48Yes, he's a pretty good hitter.
- 2:03:51He was swinging and he grounds it to third.
- 2:03:53Taylor has it, throws them out and the inning is over.
- 2:03:56I don't know if Maxville ever swung them three and old before, but they gave him the green light that time.
- 2:04:00And he grounded it third. So the leadoff double by McCarver is wasted in the seventh.
- 2:04:04No runs, one hit. No errors, and one left. The Cardinals have left eight.
- 2:04:07Seven points have been played and the Cardinals lead Philadelphia 6-0.
- 2:04:15We go into the top of the eighth. The Cardinals are still out of butt 6-0.
- 2:04:20Larry Jackson to the relief of Bob Gibson.
- 2:04:22Givvy was just great so far tonight.
- 2:04:26He made a big improvement over his first start, but he wasn't bad either.
- 2:04:32And he'll get another three, two or three, maybe four starts.
- 2:04:37He might just wind up being the hero of the World Series before it's all over.
- 2:04:41Here's Bobby Wine, the shortstop.
- 2:04:43Six to nothing in favor of the Cardinals. Larry Jackson's fifth.
- 2:04:47Swung on, fly ball, center field, Kirk Blood.
- 2:04:50He could catch up on blindfolds and one-offs.
- 2:04:53You know, I've just opened up a few more runners.
- 2:04:58And likewise, they're from Service Run.
- 2:05:02But you know, honestly, we just simply do not have a thing to do with the World Series tickets.
- 2:05:07And the running tours and especially sending money is what I wish you wouldn't,
- 2:05:18because things can happen at the bill and we can't get the tickets for you anyhow.
- 2:05:31But Billy Cowan, consider it the ground ball.
- 2:05:34Gagliano's got it over the first infire.
- 2:05:38Two up, two down. Larry Jackson's retired four in a row.
- 2:05:41The score, six to nothing in favor of the Cardinals, who will make their magic number seven.
- 2:05:47San Francisco and Los Angeles just getting started.
- 2:05:51Should the Giants lose, by the way, the magic number then will be seven
- 2:05:56with a chance to make it six tomorrow.
- 2:05:59And then we go on the road for six games.
- 2:06:02Here's Cookie Rojas, the pitch is low, ball up.
- 2:06:06One ball, no strike.
- 2:06:08Six to nothing in favor of the Redbirds.
- 2:06:14Red flag of the National League office on hand.
- 2:06:17Here's the pitch.
- 2:06:19Fast ball, a little bit high.
- 2:06:21Two balls, no strike.
- 2:06:29The White Sox in danger of losing a double header.
- 2:06:32Here's the pitch, strike call.
- 2:06:48Two balls and a strike.
- 2:06:52Now the line, the pitch.
- 2:06:58Strike two call.
- 2:07:00Three balls, two strikes, two outs. Cookie Rojas the batter.
- 2:07:04He bounced a sharp walk and single.
- 2:07:06One out of two.
- 2:07:08Two men away in the top of the eighth.
- 2:07:10Cardinals leading six to nothing, the pitch.
- 2:07:12High top fly, that will be easy.
- 2:07:15Orlando in foul territory, he's got it.
- 2:07:18And the inning is over.
- 2:07:20One, two, three, nothing across.
- 2:07:22We go into the bottom of the eighth, the Cardinals six, the Phillies nothing.
- 2:07:27Say, friends, have you seen the new bottle cap that Bush has on handy no return bottles?
- 2:07:38It's more fun and it's called an easy twist cap.
- 2:07:43Looks just like a regular bottle cap, yet you can twist it off with just a turn of your hand.
- 2:07:48Works either way with a bottle opener or by hand.
- 2:07:51It's a new and convenient way to enjoy Bush.
- 2:07:54Look for the word easy twist.
- 2:08:04When you do for a beer, Bush does it.
- 2:08:11Satisfies like normal beer can.
- 2:08:18Bush delivers all of the satisfaction of all advice that he ever gives.
- 2:08:23Can't say this is better than this.
- 2:08:32We go into the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:08:34Blaine Jackson is the new pitcher for the Phillies.
- 2:08:42Cardinals leading six to nothing.
- 2:08:44Here's a poem from Hank Brody.
- 2:08:46Hardly anyone picked the cards to win.
- 2:08:48They were all afraid like it was a sin.
- 2:08:50I understand and I know that it's true that Harry Carrey picked them one or two.
- 2:08:55Manager read he's the best from the game.
- 2:08:57They all respect him and he does the same.
- 2:08:59Their hitting, pitching, and feeling is great.
- 2:09:01The fans all love them.
- 2:09:02Just look at the gate.
- 2:09:03They will win the pennant World Series II if I'm not right or by the world, a boo.
- 2:09:08Bush.
- 2:09:13Larry Jaster hitting the first pitch.
- 2:09:15Ground ball, oh, Cookie Rod, great stop.
- 2:09:17And throw, he got him, beautiful play.
- 2:09:22Cookie Rod went behind second base.
- 2:09:25A brilliant play on a ground ball and took a base hit away from Larry Jaster.
- 2:09:29One gun.
- 2:09:31Here's Lou Brock.
- 2:09:33He's one out of three.
- 2:09:39Here's a young man, turns a note up.
- 2:09:43Says I'm going to Vietnam tomorrow.
- 2:09:45Please say goodbye to Marsha Farmer.
- 2:09:48I don't know Marsha Farmer.
- 2:09:50He was a pitch.
- 2:09:51Swung and he fouled it back out of place.
- 2:09:53Strike one.
- 2:09:55That's what I call a bashful boy.
- 2:09:59But Marsha, wherever you are, a boy going to Vietnam wants to say goodbye to you.
- 2:10:05Lou Brock up there, he'll pitch, he swings, and he fouls it back.
- 2:10:14One away.
- 2:10:16Nobody on base bottom of the gate.
- 2:10:18Cardinals leading six to nothing.
- 2:10:20This game, just like the pennant, is just a matter of time.
- 2:10:24Here's a miss.
- 2:10:25High pop ball.
- 2:10:27Tony Gonzalez coming over.
- 2:10:29Can't reach it in the bullpen.
- 2:10:31And Lou Brock will have another try.
- 2:10:34The Giants didn't score in the first at Los Angeles.
- 2:10:37The Cubs are leading at Houston four to three in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:10:40Atlanta edge the Mets four to three.
- 2:10:43Cincinnati over the Pirates 15 to seven.
- 2:10:45Washington down.
- 2:10:47Minnesota five to four.
- 2:10:49Cleveland beat the White Sox four to three in the first game and lead two to nothing at the end of two in the second game.
- 2:10:55The Yankees split with the Angels.
- 2:10:57Red Sox beat Kansas City three to one.
- 2:10:59Detroit over Baltimore six to four.
- 2:11:01Bill Campbell, how are you?
- 2:11:03Two strikes, double.
- 2:11:08Here's the play.
- 2:11:11Swings and he, there's the glove, look, come on.
- 2:11:14The ball gets away from the catcher, but Brock didn't see it and is standing at the plate.
- 2:11:18It rolled about 25 feet behind Oliver.
- 2:11:21However, he recovered in time to get Brock.
- 2:11:24Two up, two down and here is Kirk Fluck.
- 2:11:27What do you want for your start of the game?
- 2:11:29All right, you know, the reward winner takes the first choice.
- 2:11:32I know, but I feel beautiful tonight.
- 2:11:34Where a magic number will be seven, I want to be magnanimous.
- 2:11:37You have every right to feel beautiful.
- 2:11:39Who would you like you may ask?
- 2:11:40I think I'd like to talk to Val Vakar.
- 2:11:42You have it.
- 2:11:44Here's the best.
- 2:11:54Bill Campbell, one of these fellows on the broadcast.
- 2:12:15I just hope we don't flatten out.
- 2:12:17I hope we can clench and get a little rest and then get back into high gear.
- 2:12:21Here's the pinching in mind, because that American League team, whichever one it might be, is going to be tough.
- 2:12:26I'll tell you, Harry, I really thought we were going to come in here in these three games to sting you a little bit.
- 2:12:30You know how you get a feeling?
- 2:12:31We've been playing pretty well, even without Allen.
- 2:12:33We won three in a row, and you know what Allen does, it's two years back.
- 2:12:37And to be very honest with you, I thought we were going to come in and maybe hurt you a little bit,
- 2:12:40but you can't hurt a club when they play this well.
- 2:12:43They're really playing excellent baseball.
- 2:12:44How about Richie Allen, Bill?
- 2:12:46How bad off really is he?
- 2:12:48We were just saying over there, Richie Ashburn and I, that we take the pitchers in your clubhouse,
- 2:12:52have a fight in the clubhouse to see who's going to pitch against us.
- 2:12:55You know what it means to play without him, Harry, especially with our lineup.
- 2:12:58He's coming along all right.
- 2:12:59He's got a contraption heritage you wouldn't believe, from his shoulder to his fingertips.
- 2:13:04And we're worried about whether or not he'll have good movement in his fingers.
- 2:13:07There's a problem about it.
- 2:13:09What I can't understand, how can a guy make an $85,000 a year be driving a Model T4?
- 2:13:14There's been a lot of players like that.
- 2:13:15We had a guy, a bonus player named Kirk Simmons, who had one cut his foot off on the wall and board.
- 2:13:21Here's Flood taking a pitch low.
- 2:13:24It's really not funny and it's nothing to be facetious about,
- 2:13:29but the thought of course occurs is a guy that could be driving Rolls-Royce if he wanted to,
- 2:13:37but he's pushing a Model T Flipper around the street.
- 2:13:39Well, I think he hasn't grabbed his Cadillac, but he fools around with his car.
- 2:13:44You know, Harry, it's the spirit of brotherly love.
- 2:13:46Don't let somebody else do it. We'll do it.
- 2:13:48Three balls, two strikes on Flood.
- 2:13:51Here's the pitch by Grant Jackson out of the back.
- 2:13:55Boy, this fellow, this young left-hander, has looked good against us a few times.
- 2:13:58We've seen him, Bill. Jackson.
- 2:14:00He's going to the instructional league.
- 2:14:01We'll have a team for the first time this year, and he's got to learn to get the breaking ball over, Harry.
- 2:14:05He has a lot of trouble with the curve ball.
- 2:14:07Good fast ball.
- 2:14:08Three balls, two strikes, good pitch.
- 2:14:10Now, ball is sharp, that'll be easy.
- 2:14:12He's got to be wide up and throwing.
- 2:14:14He's out.
- 2:14:15One, two, three, nothing across.
- 2:14:17At the end of eighth, the Cardinals fix the Phillies nothing.
- 2:14:21See if you remember this play from the Cardinals fans.
- 2:14:25We're coming right down to the wire on the final game of the World Series
- 2:14:28with a card to the Red Sox tied 3-3 in the last of the eighth.
- 2:14:31Enos Plowder is on his first base, and Harry the Hat Walker steps to the plate.
- 2:14:35Here's the stretch, the look towards first.
- 2:14:37Here comes the pitch, there goes Plowder.
- 2:14:38He's got the play, the line by, just told the Pesci cat out of the right center field.
- 2:14:42Donald Brownlee second, he's headed for third, colors the field to the right center.
- 2:14:45Here's the relay, and the Pesci's got it on the right side.
- 2:14:48He's going to fight for home.
- 2:14:49Here's the goal by Pesci, Plowder flies, and he's in the game.
- 2:14:52That unexpected play gave the Card the 46th series.
- 2:14:55But don't let the unexpected happen while you're driving.
- 2:14:58Avoid running short of cash with a DX credit card.
- 2:15:01Good for quality DX products and services.
- 2:15:04It's honored in all 50 states and Canada.
- 2:15:06And at Ramada Inns everywhere.
- 2:15:08See your DX dealer about your DX credit card.
- 2:15:11From Sunray DX, the oil company known by the customers we keep.
- 2:15:16The Cleveland Indians now lead the White Sox 4-0.
- 2:15:25In the bottom of the third at Chicago, the second game of the double header.
- 2:15:31Cleveland won the first game 4-3.
- 2:15:40Well the way it stands right now, Minnesota and Boston are tied for first place, identically.
- 2:15:46Detroit is one game up.
- 2:15:50The White Sox right now are two and a half up.
- 2:15:53They lose that second game, they'd be three back and be starting to fall.
- 2:15:57Here's top of the ninth.
- 2:15:59The Astors first pitch swung off.
- 2:16:01High fly ball.
- 2:16:02Hit by Tony Taylor into deep right field.
- 2:16:04Maras in the corner makes the catch.
- 2:16:06Roger Maras raced in the right field corner.
- 2:16:09And took care of Taylor's foul ball.
- 2:16:12One out.
- 2:16:14The Dodgers didn't score their first.
- 2:16:17The Giants at Los Angeles, North, score at the end of one.
- 2:16:20The Cardinals are about to reduce their magic number to seven.
- 2:16:24Should the Giants happen to lose, it will be six.
- 2:16:27One game here tomorrow night and six on the road before we return home.
- 2:16:33Here's Callison, one out of three, the pitch.
- 2:16:38Back caught.
- 2:16:40One strike and no ball.
- 2:16:41One out.
- 2:16:43Johnny Callison is single in the first, rolled out and fly down.
- 2:16:47Larry Jaston delivers the pitch.
- 2:16:51High pop fly, easy out.
- 2:16:53Bill getting back under the ball, he's got it two away.
- 2:16:57Callison tops him actually.
- 2:17:04Two men are out.
- 2:17:06And here is Tony Gonzalez, who's raised his average to 3.44.
- 2:17:13With two out of three.
- 2:17:16Orlando Cepeda has fallen into a slump.
- 2:17:21Two out of 23 now.
- 2:17:25Here's Jaston's pitch.
- 2:17:27He had a covering him as strike one.
- 2:17:32Bob Gibson pitched a beautiful six in that third inning, allowing five hits and no runs.
- 2:17:38Stuck out two off one.
- 2:17:40The delivery, high pop foul out of play.
- 2:17:43Two strikes and nothing.
- 2:17:46The Cardinals out in front, six to nothing.
- 2:17:49Bob Gibson will be scoring his 12th victory of the year.
- 2:17:55Larry Jaston with the save.
- 2:17:59Now Larry gets ready.
- 2:18:01The signal is given.
- 2:18:02Here's the pitch.
- 2:18:04And it's high.
- 2:18:05Two strikes and the ball.
- 2:18:07Houston batting in the bottom of the eighth, the Cubs lead 4-3.
- 2:18:12Tony Gonzalez with two out of three.
- 2:18:14He is second to Roberto Clemente in hitting.
- 2:18:18Now to wind up the pitch.
- 2:18:20Graham Blaine drive right back to Jaston.
- 2:18:23The magic number is seven.
- 2:18:26Gonzalez line to Jaston.
- 2:18:29That ball was really hit.
- 2:18:32And Larry caught that ball and self-defense.
- 2:18:35One through three.
- 2:18:36The St. Louis Cardinals magic number now is seven.
- 2:18:40Boy, what a, it's only been a matter of months I guess.
- 2:18:43It's that long when we started right here at home.
- 2:18:46Starting to count down at 42.
- 2:18:49We have gone from 42 and now we're down to seven.
- 2:18:53And before we wake up in the morning, maybe it will be down to six.
- 2:18:57The Giants playing in Los Angeles, no score at the end of one.
- 2:19:01In the event the Giants loses, the magic number then will be six going into tomorrow night's game.
- 2:19:07We'll be back with the totals here in a moment.
- 2:19:10When you have money to save and want to earn a big 5% interest,
- 2:19:13you should look into a savings certificate at First National Bank in St. Louis.
- 2:19:17You don't want to let money dribble through your fingers,
- 2:19:19nor should it lie around while it could bring in a generous 5% annual interest.
- 2:19:24Now a First National savings certificate is a guaranteed investment.
- 2:19:28Of course your money saves all years on maturity,
- 2:19:31and First National guarantees to pay 5% interest a year to individuals and nonprofit organizations.
- 2:19:38If you need the money soon, you can get a 5% certificate that matures in just three months.
- 2:19:42And if you don't want to cash it in then, First National automatically renews your certificate.
- 2:19:47And a First National savings certificate begins to earn 5% the day you buy it.
- 2:19:52It takes but a few moments to get your certificate of $500 or more,
- 2:19:56but to earn it in three months or longer,
- 2:19:58paying you 5% guaranteed annual interest at First National Bank in St. Louis, downtown.
- 2:20:05The magic number is 7. Bob Gibson, in his second start since coming off the disabled list,
- 2:20:15has scored his second victory.
- 2:20:17In his first start he pitched five innings.
- 2:20:19Tonight in his second start he pitched six in the third innings
- 2:20:22and looked so much better than he did even in his first start.
- 2:20:26I think by the time he makes his next start,
- 2:20:29he will be the Bob Gibson of his peak, which augurs well for the coming World Series.
- 2:20:36The Cardinals' win this one-handedly are shut out, shared by Bob Gibson and Larry Jast.
- 2:20:43And the totals are six runs, 11 hit snow errors for the Cardinals.
- 2:20:47Gibson the winner, with Larry Jast pitching perfect baseball, they were leaped.
- 2:20:53He came in with two on and one out in the seventh, and he retired eight men in a row.
- 2:20:576-11 and all for the Cardinals. Gibson the winner now, 12 and 6.
- 2:21:01No runs, five hits, no errors for the Phillies.
- 2:21:04Rick Wise, the loser, he has won nine and lost 11.
- 2:21:07Time out of all, again, two hours and 21 minutes.
- 2:21:10The magic number right now is 7.
- 2:21:13Tomorrow evening, Dick Hughes for the Cardinals.
- 2:21:15Larry Jast for the Phillies.

- 2:22:09this is Harry Carrey wishing all a very pleasant good evening from beautiful Bush Memorial Stadium,
- 2:22:14where 19,932 players running the Cardinals home attendance to 1,955,241.
- 2:22:24Just 45,002 million marks with five games to play.
- 2:22:29The Redbirds need an average of only about 8,500 in the remaining five games to go over the two-million mark.
- 2:22:36And so the Cardinals reduced their magic number to seven as they blanked the Philadelphia Phillies six to nothing
- 2:22:43and if that isn't the longest sentence in history, I'll try again tomorrow night.
