Speaker 1: Catherine Barry Judson Preface. Long ago, even before the days
• 0:28
Speaker 1: of the animal people, the world was only a great ocean,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: wherein was no land nor any living thing except a
• 0:36
Speaker 1: great bird. The bird, after a long long time, flew
• 0:41
Speaker 1: down to the surface of the water and dipped his
• 0:43
Speaker 1: great black wings into the flood. The earth arose out
• 0:48
Speaker 1: of the waters. So began the creation. While the land
• 0:53
Speaker 1: was still soft. The first man burst from the pod
• 0:56
Speaker 1: of the beach pea and looked out upon the endless
• 0:59
Speaker 1: plain behind him and the great salt sea before him.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: He was the only man. Then Raven appeared to him,
• 1:10
Speaker 1: and the creation of other things began. Raven made also
• 1:14
Speaker 1: animal for food and clothing. Later, because the earth plane
• 1:18
Speaker 1: was so bare, he planted trees and shrubs and grass,
• 1:22
Speaker 1: and set the green things to growing. With creation by
• 1:27
Speaker 1: a great spirit. There came dangers from evil spirits. Such
• 1:31
Speaker 1: spirits carried away the sun and moon and hung them
• 1:35
Speaker 1: to the rafters of the dome shaped Alaskan huts. The
• 1:40
Speaker 1: world became cold and cheerless, and in the land of darkness,
• 1:44
Speaker 1: white skins became blackened by contact with the darkness. So
• 1:49
Speaker 1: it became necessary to search for the sun and hang
• 1:52
Speaker 1: it again in the dome shaped sky above them. Darkness
• 1:57
Speaker 1: in the land of long night was the cause, through magic,
• 2:01
Speaker 1: of the bitter winds of winter, winds which came down
• 2:04
Speaker 1: from the north, bringing with them ice and cold and snow.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: This was the work of some great spirit which had
• 2:13
Speaker 1: loosened the side of the gray cloud tint under which
• 2:16
Speaker 1: they lived, letting in the bitter winds of another world.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: Spirits blow the mists over the cold North Sea, so
• 2:24
Speaker 1: the canoes lose sight of their home land. Spirits also
• 2:28
Speaker 1: drive the ice floes with their fishermen far over the
• 2:31
Speaker 1: horizon of ocean into the still colder North. Spirits governed
• 2:37
Speaker 1: the run of the salmon, the catching of whales, and
• 2:40
Speaker 1: all the life of the people of the North. Who
• 2:43
Speaker 1: wage such a terrific struggle for existence, So there must
• 2:48
Speaker 1: needs be those who have power over the evil spirits,
• 2:52
Speaker 1: those who by incantations and charms of magic. By ceremonial
• 2:57
Speaker 1: dancing in symbolic dress, can control the designs of those
• 3:01
Speaker 1: who work, ever against these children of the North. Thus
• 3:05
Speaker 1: there arose the Shamans and all their ceremonies. The myths
• 3:11
Speaker 1: in this volume are authentic. The original collections were made
• 3:15
Speaker 1: by government ethnologists, by whose permission this compilation is made,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: and no effort has been made in the telling of
• 3:23
Speaker 1: them to change them from the terse directness of the natives.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: The language of all Indian tribes is very simple, and
• 3:30
Speaker 1: to the extent that an effort is made to put
• 3:32
Speaker 1: myths and legends into more polished form, to that extent
• 3:36
Speaker 1: is their authenticity impaired. Only the quaintest and purest of
• 3:41
Speaker 1: the myths have been selected. Many Alaskan myths are very
• 3:45
Speaker 1: long and tiresome, rambling from one subject to another. Besides
• 3:50
Speaker 1: revealing low moral conditions, these have been omitted, as have
• 3:55
Speaker 1: also those which deal with the intermarriage of men and
• 3:59
Speaker 1: birds and men and animals. Such myths are better left
• 4:03
Speaker 1: among government documents, where they can be readily consulted by
• 4:07
Speaker 1: those making a special study of the subject. They are
• 4:11
Speaker 1: hardly suitable for any collection intended for general reading the
• 4:15
Speaker 1: leading myth of the North. However, the Raven myth is
• 4:19
Speaker 1: given with a fair degree of completeness. It would not
• 4:22
Speaker 1: be possible, nor would it be wise, to attempt a
• 4:25
Speaker 1: compilation of all the fragments of this extensive myth. Especial

Speaker 2: Legends of Alaska by Catherine Barry Judson. Chapter one the
• 5:31
Speaker 2: Raven myth. It was in the time when there were
• 5:35
Speaker 2: no people on the earth plane. The first man, for
• 5:38
Speaker 2: four days lay coiled up in the pod of the
• 5:40
Speaker 2: beach Pea. On the fifth day, he stretched out his
• 5:43
Speaker 2: feet and burst the pod. He fell to the ground,
• 5:46
Speaker 2: and when he stood up he was a full grown man.
• 5:49
Speaker 2: Man looked all around him, and then at himself. He
• 5:52
Speaker 2: moved his hands and arms, his neck and legs. When
• 5:55
Speaker 2: he looked back, he saw still hanging to divine the
• 5:59
Speaker 2: pod of the beach Peace, with a hole in the
• 6:01
Speaker 2: lower end, out of which he had dropped. When he
• 6:04
Speaker 2: looked about him again, he saw that he was getting
• 6:06
Speaker 2: farther from his starting place. The ground seemed to move
• 6:09
Speaker 2: up and down under his feet. It was very soft.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: After a while, he had a strange feeling in his stomach,
• 6:16
Speaker 2: so he stooped down to drink some water from a
• 6:18
Speaker 2: small pool at his feet. Then he felt better. When
• 6:23
Speaker 2: man looked up again, he saw coming toward him with
• 6:26
Speaker 2: a fluttering motion, something dark. He watched a dark thing
• 6:30
Speaker 2: until it stopped just in front of him. It was Raven.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: As soon as Raven stopped, he raised one of his
• 6:36
Speaker 2: wings and pushed up his beak as though it wore
• 6:38
Speaker 2: a mask to the top of his head. Thus Raven
• 6:41
Speaker 2: changed at once into a man. Raven stared hard at Man,
• 6:45
Speaker 2: moving from side to side to see him better. Raven said,
• 6:48
Speaker 2: what are you? Where did you come from? I have
• 6:51
Speaker 2: never seen anything like you. Raven still stared at Man,
• 6:55
Speaker 2: surprised to find this new thing so much like himself.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: He made Man walk around a little while he broked
• 7:01
Speaker 2: his head from side to side to see him better.
• 7:04
Speaker 2: Then Raven said, again, in astonishment, where did you come from?
• 7:08
Speaker 2: I have never seen anything like you before? Man said,
• 7:12
Speaker 2: I came from the pea pod. He pointed to the
• 7:15
Speaker 2: plant from which she came. Ah. I made it fine,
• 7:19
Speaker 2: said Raven. But I did not know that anything like
• 7:22
Speaker 2: you would come from it. Come with me to the
• 7:24
Speaker 2: high ground over there. It is thicker and harder. This
• 7:28
Speaker 2: ground I made later, and it is soft and thin.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: So Man and Raven walked to the higher ground, which
• 7:34
Speaker 2: was firm and hard. Raven asked Man if he had
• 7:37
Speaker 2: eaten anything. Man said he had taken some of the
• 7:41
Speaker 2: soft stuff from one of the pools. Ah, you drank
• 7:44
Speaker 2: some water, said Raven. Now wait for me here. Raven
• 7:48
Speaker 2: drew down his beak as though it were a mask
• 7:51
Speaker 2: over his face. He at once became a bird and
• 7:54
Speaker 2: flew far up into the sky, far out of sight.
• 7:57
Speaker 2: Man waited until the fourth day. Then Raven returned, bringing
• 8:01
Speaker 2: four berries in his claws. He pushed up his beak
• 8:04
Speaker 2: and so became a man again. Then he gave to
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Man two salmon berries and two heathed berries, saying, here
• 8:12
Speaker 2: is something I made for you to eat. I wish
• 8:14
Speaker 2: them to be plentiful on earth. Eat them. Man put
• 8:18
Speaker 2: the berries into his mouth, one after the other and
• 8:21
Speaker 2: ate them. Then he felt better. Then Raven left Man
• 8:25
Speaker 2: near a small creek while he went to the edge
• 8:27
Speaker 2: of the water. He did two pieces of clay at
• 8:30
Speaker 2: the water's edge and shaped them like a pair of
• 8:33
Speaker 2: mountain sheep. He held them in his hand until they
• 8:36
Speaker 2: were dry, and then he called Man to come and
• 8:38
Speaker 2: see them. Man said they were pretty, so Raven told
• 8:41
Speaker 2: him to close his eyes. Man closed his eyes tightly.
• 8:45
Speaker 2: Then Raven pulled down his beak mask and raved his
• 8:48
Speaker 2: wings four times over the pieces of clay. At once
• 8:51
Speaker 2: they bounded away as full grown mountain sheep. Raven told
• 8:55
Speaker 2: Man to look. Man was so much pleased that Raven said,
• 9:00
Speaker 2: if these animals were plentiful. Perhaps people will try to
• 9:03
Speaker 2: kill them. Man said yes. Then Raven said, well, it
• 9:08
Speaker 2: will be better for them to live among his steep rocks,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: so everyone cannot kill them. There, only shall they be found.
• 9:15
Speaker 2: Raven took two more pieces of clay and shaped them
• 9:18
Speaker 2: like tame reindeer. He held them in his hand until
• 9:21
Speaker 2: they were partly dry, then told men to look at them.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: Raven again drew down his beak mask and rave his
• 9:27
Speaker 2: swings four times over them. Thus they became alive, but
• 9:31
Speaker 2: they were only dry in spots while Raven held them.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: Therefore they remained brown and white with mottled coat. Raven
• 9:38
Speaker 2: told man these tame reindeer would be very few in number. Again,
• 9:43
Speaker 2: Raven took two pieces of clay and shaped them like
• 9:46
Speaker 2: the caribou or wild reindeer. But he held them in
• 9:49
Speaker 2: his hands only a little while, so that only the
• 9:52
Speaker 2: bellies of the reindeer became dry and white. Then Raven
• 9:56
Speaker 2: drew down his beak mask and raved his swings over them,
• 9:59
Speaker 2: and they bound the way. But because only their bellies
• 10:02
Speaker 2: were dry and white while Raven held them, Therefore, the
• 10:05
Speaker 2: wild reindeer is brown except its white belly. Raven said
• 10:09
Speaker 2: the man, these animals would be very common. People will
• 10:13
Speaker 2: kill many of them. Thus Raven began to create the animals.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Raven said one day to Man, you are lonely by yourself.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: I will make you a companion. He went to some
• 10:26
Speaker 2: white clay at a spot distance from the clay which
• 10:28
Speaker 2: he had made the animals, and made the clay a
• 10:31
Speaker 2: figure almost like man. Raven kept looking at Man while
• 10:34
Speaker 2: he shaped the figure. Then he took fine water grass
• 10:38
Speaker 2: from the creek and fastened it on the back of
• 10:40
Speaker 2: the head for hair. When the clay was shaped, Raven
• 10:44
Speaker 2: drew down his beak mask and waved his swings over it.
• 10:47
Speaker 2: The clay became a beautiful girl. The girl was white
• 10:50
Speaker 2: and fair because Raven let the clay dry entirely before
• 10:53
Speaker 2: he waved his swings over it. Raven took the girl
• 10:56
Speaker 2: to Man. There is a companion for you, said. Now.
• 11:01
Speaker 2: In the days of the first people on the earth plane,
• 11:04
Speaker 2: there were no mountains far or near, no rain ever fell,
• 11:07
Speaker 2: and there were no winds. The sun shone always very brightly.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Then Raven showed the first people on the earth plane
• 11:15
Speaker 2: how to sleep warmly and the dry moss. When they
• 11:17
Speaker 2: were tired, Raven himself drew down his beak mask and
• 11:21
Speaker 2: went to sleep like a bird. When Raven awakened, he
• 11:25
Speaker 2: went back to the creek. Here he made two sticklebacks,
• 11:28
Speaker 2: to graylynx and to blackfish. When these were swimming about
• 11:32
Speaker 2: in the water, he called Man to see them. Man
• 11:35
Speaker 2: raised his hand in surprise, and the sticklebacks started away.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: Raven told him the graylings would be found in the
• 11:41
Speaker 2: clear mountain streams, while the sticklebacks would live along the coast,
• 11:46
Speaker 2: and that both would be good for food. Raven next
• 11:50
Speaker 2: made the shrew mouse. He said, the shrew mouse will
• 11:54
Speaker 2: not be good for food, it'll prevent the earth plane
• 11:56
Speaker 2: from looking bare and cheerless. In this way, Raven was
• 12:00
Speaker 2: busy for several days making birds and fishes and animals.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: He showed each of them to Man and explained what
• 12:07
Speaker 2: they were good for. Then Raven flew into the sky,
• 12:10
Speaker 2: far far away, and was gone four days. When he
• 12:14
Speaker 2: came back, he brought a salmon to Man. But Raven
• 12:17
Speaker 2: noticed that the ponds and lakes were silent and lonely,
• 12:20
Speaker 2: so he made water bugs to float upon the surface
• 12:23
Speaker 2: of the water. He also made the beaver and the
• 12:26
Speaker 2: muskrat to live around the borders of the ponds. Raven
• 12:29
Speaker 2: told man that the beavers would live along the streams
• 12:32
Speaker 2: and build strong houses, so man must build a strong house. Also,
• 12:37
Speaker 2: Raven said the beavers would be very cunning, and only
• 12:39
Speaker 2: good hunters could catch them. He also told man how
• 12:42
Speaker 2: to catch the muskrat and how to use its skin
• 12:45
Speaker 2: for clothing. Raven also made flies and mosquitoes and other
• 12:49
Speaker 2: insects to make the ear the plain more cheerful. At first,
• 12:52
Speaker 2: mosquitoes were like flies, they did not bite. One day,
• 12:56
Speaker 2: Man killed a deer. After he had cut it up
• 12:59
Speaker 2: and played the fat on a bush. He fell asleep.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: When he awoke, he found the mosquitoes had eaten all
• 13:05
Speaker 2: of it. Then Man was very angry and scolded the mosquitoes.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: He said, never eat meat again eat men. Before that,
• 13:13
Speaker 2: mosquitoes never bid people. When the first baby came on
• 13:17
Speaker 2: the earth plane, Raven rubbed it all over with white clay.
• 13:21
Speaker 2: He told man it would grow into a man like himself.
• 13:24
Speaker 2: The next morning, the baby was a big boy. He
• 13:28
Speaker 2: ran around pulling up grass and flowers that Raven had planted.
• 13:31
Speaker 2: By the third day, the baby was a full grown man.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: Then another baby was born on the earth plane, she
• 13:37
Speaker 2: was rubbed over with white clay. The next day, the
• 13:40
Speaker 2: baby was a big girl walking around. On the third day,
• 13:44
Speaker 2: she was a full grown woman. Now Raven began to
• 13:47
Speaker 2: be afraid that men would kill all the creatures he
• 13:49
Speaker 2: had made. He was afraid they would kill them for
• 13:52
Speaker 2: food and clothing. Therefore, Raven went to a creek nearby.
• 13:56
Speaker 2: He took white clay and shaped it like a bear.
• 14:00
Speaker 2: He waved his wings over it, and the clay became
• 14:02
Speaker 2: a bear. But Raven jumped very quickly to one side
• 14:05
Speaker 2: when the bear became alive, because it looked fiercely around
• 14:09
Speaker 2: and growled. Then Raven showed the bear to man and
• 14:13
Speaker 2: told him to be careful. He said the bear was
• 14:15
Speaker 2: very fierce and would tear him to pieces if he
• 14:18
Speaker 2: disturbed it. Then Raven made the seals and taught man
• 14:22
Speaker 2: how to catch them. He also taught man how to
• 14:25
Speaker 2: make strong lines from sealskin and snares for the deer.
• 14:30
Speaker 2: Then Raven went away to the place of the pea vine.
• 14:33
Speaker 2: When he reached the peavine, he found three other men
• 14:36
Speaker 2: had just fallen from the same pot that Man had
• 14:38
Speaker 2: fallen from. These men were looking about them and wonder.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: Raven led them away from the pea vine, but in
• 14:44
Speaker 2: a different direction from the first man. He brought them
• 14:48
Speaker 2: close to the sea. Raven stayed with these three men
• 14:51
Speaker 2: a long time. He taught them how to take wood
• 14:53
Speaker 2: from the bushes and small trees he planted in hollows
• 14:57
Speaker 2: and sheltered places, and to make a fire drill, and
• 15:00
Speaker 2: also a bow. He made many more plants and birds,
• 15:04
Speaker 2: which like the sea coast, but he did not make
• 15:07
Speaker 2: so many as in the land where Man lived. He
• 15:10
Speaker 2: taught these men how to make bows and arrows, spears
• 15:12
Speaker 2: and nets, and how to use them, and also how
• 15:16
Speaker 2: to capture the seals, which were now plentiful in the sea.
• 15:20
Speaker 2: Then he taught them how to make kayaks, and how
• 15:23
Speaker 2: to build houses of drift logs and of bushes covered
• 15:26
Speaker 2: with earth. Then he made wives for these men and
• 15:29
Speaker 2: went back to Man. When Raven reached the land where
• 15:33
Speaker 2: man lived, he thought the earth plane still looked bare.
• 15:37
Speaker 2: So while the other slept, Raven planted birch and spruce
• 15:41
Speaker 2: and cotton with trees to grow in the low places.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: Then he woke up the people, who were pleased with
• 15:46
Speaker 2: the trees. Then Raven taught man how to make fire
• 15:50
Speaker 2: with a fire drill, and to place a spark of
• 15:53
Speaker 2: tinder and a bunch of dry grass, and to wave
• 15:55
Speaker 2: it about until it placed, and then to put dry
• 15:58
Speaker 2: wood upon it. He showed them how to roast fish
• 16:01
Speaker 2: on a stick, and how to make fish traps of
• 16:04
Speaker 2: splints and willow bark, and how to dray salmon for
• 16:07
Speaker 2: winter use. Where Man lived there was now a large
• 16:10
Speaker 2: village because the people did everything as Raven told them. Therefore,
• 16:14
Speaker 2: all the babies grew up in three days. When day,
• 16:17
Speaker 2: Raven came back and sat down by Man by the creek,
• 16:20
Speaker 2: and they talked of many things. Man as Raven about
• 16:23
Speaker 2: the skyland. Man wanted to see the skyland, which Raven
• 16:27
Speaker 2: had made. Therefore Raven took Man to the land in
• 16:30
Speaker 2: the sky. Man found that the skyland was a very
• 16:33
Speaker 2: beautiful country, and that it had a much better climate
• 16:37
Speaker 2: than his land. But the people who lived there were
• 16:40
Speaker 2: very small. Their heads did not reach to man's hips.
• 16:44
Speaker 2: The people wore fur clothing with beautiful patterns, such as
• 16:48
Speaker 2: people on Earth now wear, because Man showed his people
• 16:51
Speaker 2: how to make them. And the lakes were strange animals
• 16:54
Speaker 2: which would have killed Man if he had tried to
• 16:56
Speaker 2: drink the water. In a dry lake bed thickly covered
• 17:00
Speaker 2: with tall grass, Man saw a wonderful animal resting upon
• 17:04
Speaker 2: the tips of the grasses. It had a long head
• 17:07
Speaker 2: and six legs. It had fine, thick hair, and on
• 17:10
Speaker 2: the back of the head were two thick short horns
• 17:14
Speaker 2: which bent forward and then curved back at the hips.
• 17:16
Speaker 2: Raven told Nan it took many people to kill this animal.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: Then they came to a round hole in the sky,
• 17:22
Speaker 2: and around the edge of the hole was short grass
• 17:25
Speaker 2: glowing like fire. Raven said, this is a star called
• 17:30
Speaker 2: the Moondog. Some of the grass had been pulled up.
• 17:33
Speaker 2: Raven said he had taken some to start the first
• 17:36
Speaker 2: fire on Earth. Then Raven said to man, shut your eyes.
• 17:40
Speaker 2: I will take you to another country. Man climbed upon
• 17:44
Speaker 2: Raven's back and they dropped down through the star hole.
• 17:47
Speaker 2: They floated a long long time through the air. Then
• 17:50
Speaker 2: they floated through something else. When they stopped, Raven saw
• 17:54
Speaker 2: he was at the bottom of the sea. Man could
• 17:57
Speaker 2: breathe there, but it seemed foggy. Raven said that was
• 18:01
Speaker 2: the appearance of the water. Then Raven said, I want
• 18:05
Speaker 2: to make some new animals here. But you must not
• 18:07
Speaker 2: walk about. You lie down, and if you get tired,
• 18:11
Speaker 2: turn over on the other side. Man went to sleep,
• 18:15
Speaker 2: lying on his side and slept a long while. When
• 18:18
Speaker 2: he waked up, he wanted to turn over, but he
• 18:21
Speaker 2: could not. Then Man thought, I wish I could turn over,
• 18:25
Speaker 2: and at once he turned. As he turned, he was
• 18:28
Speaker 2: surprised to see that his body was covered with long
• 18:30
Speaker 2: white hairs, and his fingers were long claws. Then he
• 18:34
Speaker 2: went to sleep again. This he did three times more.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: Then when he woke up, Raven stood by him. Raven said,
• 18:42
Speaker 2: I have changed you into a white bear. How do
• 18:45
Speaker 2: you like it? Man could not make a sound until
• 18:48
Speaker 2: Raven waved his wings over him. Then he said he
• 18:51
Speaker 2: did not like it. If he was a bear, he
• 18:54
Speaker 2: would have to live on the sea while his son
• 18:56
Speaker 2: lived on land, so Man should feel badly. And then
• 19:00
Speaker 2: Raven struck the white skin with his wings and it
• 19:02
Speaker 2: fell off, so Man became himself again. But Raven took
• 19:07
Speaker 2: the empty bear skin and placed one of his own
• 19:09
Speaker 2: tail feathers inside it for a spine. Then he waved
• 19:12
Speaker 2: his swing over it and a white bear arose. Ever
• 19:15
Speaker 2: since then, white bears have been found on the frozen
• 19:18
Speaker 2: sea Raven said, how many times did you turn over?
• 19:23
Speaker 2: Man said four. Raven said you slept four years. Then
• 19:29
Speaker 2: Raven made other animals. He made the ami cook, a large,
• 19:34
Speaker 2: slimy animal with thick skin and with four long, white
• 19:38
Speaker 2: spreading arms. This is a fierce animal that lives in
• 19:41
Speaker 2: the sea. It wraps its four long arms around a
• 19:44
Speaker 2: man or a kayak, and it drags it under the water.
• 19:47
Speaker 2: A man cannot escape it. If he climbs out of
• 19:50
Speaker 2: his kayak on the ice, the ami cook will dart
• 19:54
Speaker 2: underneath and break the eyes. If man runs away on shore,
• 19:59
Speaker 2: the amy cook pursues him by burying through the earth.
• 20:02
Speaker 2: No man can escape from it when once it pursues him.
• 20:06
Speaker 2: Then Raven showed man the walrus and the dog. Walrus
• 20:10
Speaker 2: with head and teeth like a dog. It always swam
• 20:13
Speaker 2: with large herds of walrus, and with a stroke of
• 20:16
Speaker 2: its tail could kill a man. He showed him whales
• 20:19
Speaker 2: and the grampus. Raven told man that only good hunters
• 20:23
Speaker 2: could kill a whale, but when one was killed, an
• 20:26
Speaker 2: entire village could feast on it. He showed him also
• 20:29
Speaker 2: the sea fox, which is so fierce it kills men,
• 20:32
Speaker 2: and the sea otter which is like the land otter,
• 20:35
Speaker 2: but has finer fur tipped with white and other fishes
• 20:39
Speaker 2: and animals. As they rose to the surface of the water,
• 20:42
Speaker 2: then Raven said, close your eyes, hold fast to me.
• 20:46
Speaker 2: Then Man found himself on the shore near his home.
• 20:49
Speaker 2: The village was very large, his wife was very old,
• 20:52
Speaker 2: and his son was an old man. The people gave
• 20:54
Speaker 2: him place of honor in the cashin and made him
• 20:57
Speaker 2: their headsmen. So Man thought the young men many things.
• 21:02
Speaker 2: Now Man wanted again to see the skyland. So Raven
• 21:05
Speaker 2: and Man went up among the dwarf people and lived
• 21:08
Speaker 2: there a long time. But on earth, the village people
• 21:10
Speaker 2: grew very large. The men killed many animals. Now, in
• 21:15
Speaker 2: those days the sun shone always very brightly, no rain
• 21:18
Speaker 2: ever fell, and no winds blew. Raven and Man were
• 21:22
Speaker 2: angry because the people killed many animals. They took a
• 21:26
Speaker 2: long line in a grass basket one night and caught
• 21:29
Speaker 2: ten reindeer, which they put into the basket. Now, in
• 21:32
Speaker 2: those days, reindeer had sharp teeth like dogs. The next night,
• 21:37
Speaker 2: Raven took the reindeer and let them down on the
• 21:39
Speaker 2: earth close to Man's village. Raven said, break down the
• 21:43
Speaker 2: first house to see and kill the people. Men are
• 21:46
Speaker 2: becoming too many. The reindeer did as Raven commanded. They
• 21:50
Speaker 2: stamped on the house and broke it down. They ate
• 21:53
Speaker 2: up the people with their sharp, wolf like teeth. The
• 21:56
Speaker 2: next night Raven let the reindeer down again. They broke
• 21:59
Speaker 2: down a house and ate up the people with a
• 22:01
Speaker 2: sharp teeth. The village people were much frightened. The third night,
• 22:06
Speaker 2: they covered the third house with a mixture of deer
• 22:08
Speaker 2: fat and berries. On the third night, when the reindeer
• 22:11
Speaker 2: began to tear down the third house, their mouths were
• 22:14
Speaker 2: filled with the fat and sour berries. Then the reindeer
• 22:17
Speaker 2: ran away, shaking their head so violently that all their long,
• 22:20
Speaker 2: sharp teeth fell out. Ever since then, reindeer have had
• 22:24
Speaker 2: small teeth and cannot harm people. After the reindeer ran away,
• 22:28
Speaker 2: Raven and Man returned to the skyland. Man said, if
• 22:32
Speaker 2: the people did not stop killing so many animals, they
• 22:35
Speaker 2: will kill everything you have made. It would be better
• 22:38
Speaker 2: to take the sun away from them. Then it will
• 22:40
Speaker 2: be dark and people will die. Raven said, though it
• 22:44
Speaker 2: is right you stay here, I will go and take
• 22:47
Speaker 2: away the sun. So Raven went away and took the
• 22:50
Speaker 2: sun out of the sky. He put it in a
• 22:52
Speaker 2: skin bag and carried it far away to a distant
• 22:55
Speaker 2: part of the skyland. Then it became dark on Earth.
• 22:59
Speaker 2: The people on Earth were frightened when the sun vanished.
• 23:01
Speaker 2: They offered Raven presents of food and furs if he
• 23:04
Speaker 2: would bring back the sun. Raven said no. After a while,
• 23:09
Speaker 2: Raven felt sorry for them, so he let them have
• 23:12
Speaker 2: a little light. He held up the sun in one
• 23:14
Speaker 2: hand for two days so people could hunt and secure food.
• 23:18
Speaker 2: Then he put the sun in the skin bag again,
• 23:20
Speaker 2: and the earth was dark. Then, after a long time,
• 23:24
Speaker 2: when the people made him many gifts, he would let
• 23:26
Speaker 2: them have a little light again. Now Raven had a
• 23:29
Speaker 2: brother living in the village. He was sorry for the
• 23:32
Speaker 2: Earth's people. So Raven's brother thought a long time. Then
• 23:36
Speaker 2: he died. The people put him in a grave box
• 23:39
Speaker 2: and had a burial feast. Then they left the grave box.
• 23:42
Speaker 2: At once. Raven's brother slipped out of the box and
• 23:45
Speaker 2: went away from the village. He had his Raven mask
• 23:48
Speaker 2: and coat in a tree. Soon Raven's wife came for water.
• 23:52
Speaker 2: When she took up a dipperfol to drink, Raven's brother,
• 23:56
Speaker 2: by magic, became a small leaf, He fell into the
• 23:59
Speaker 2: water and Raven's wife swallowed him. When Raven Boy was born,
• 24:04
Speaker 2: he grew very rapidly. He was running about when he
• 24:08
Speaker 2: was only a few days old. He cried for the sun,
• 24:11
Speaker 2: which was in the skin bag hanging on the rafters.
• 24:15
Speaker 2: Raven was fond of the boy, so he let him
• 24:17
Speaker 2: play with the sun. Yet he was afraid Raven Boy
• 24:20
Speaker 2: would lose the sun, so he watched him. When Raven
• 24:24
Speaker 2: Boy began to play out of doors, he cried and
• 24:27
Speaker 2: begged for the sun. Raven said no. Then Raven Boy
• 24:31
Speaker 2: cried more than ever. At last, Raven gave him the
• 24:34
Speaker 2: sun and the house. Raven Boy played with it a
• 24:38
Speaker 2: long while. When no one was looking, he ran quickly
• 24:41
Speaker 2: out of the house. He ran to the tree, put
• 24:44
Speaker 2: on his Raven Masakin coat, and flew far away with
• 24:47
Speaker 2: the sun in the skin bag. When Raven Boy was
• 24:50
Speaker 2: far up in the sky, he heard Raven call, do
• 24:53
Speaker 2: not hide the sun. Let it out of the bag,
• 24:55
Speaker 2: do not keep it always dark. Raven thought the boy
• 24:59
Speaker 2: had stolen in it for himself. Raven Boy flew to
• 25:03
Speaker 2: the place where the sun belonged. He torved the skin
• 25:06
Speaker 2: covering and put the sun in its place. Then he
• 25:09
Speaker 2: saw a broad path leading far away. He followed it
• 25:12
Speaker 2: to the side of a whole french with short bright grass.
• 25:16
Speaker 2: He remembered that Raven had said, do not keep it
• 25:19
Speaker 2: always dark. Therefore he made a sky turn with all
• 25:23
Speaker 2: the stars in the sun. Thus it is now sometimes
• 25:27
Speaker 2: dark and sometimes light. Raven Boy picked some of the
• 25:30
Speaker 2: short bright grass by the edge of the sky hole
• 25:33
Speaker 2: and stuck it into the sky. This is the morning star.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: A raven boy went down to the earth. The people
• 25:39
Speaker 2: were glad to see him. They said, what has become
• 25:43
Speaker 2: of man who went into the skyland with raven Now
• 25:46
Speaker 2: this was the first time that raven boy had heard
• 25:48
Speaker 2: of man. He started to fly up into the sky,
• 25:51
Speaker 2: but he could get only a small distance above the earth.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: When he found he could not get back to the sky,
• 25:57
Speaker 2: Raven Boy wandered to the second village, where lived the
• 26:00
Speaker 2: men who had come from the pod of the beach peak.
• 26:03
Speaker 2: Raven Boy there married the wife, and he had many children.
• 26:07
Speaker 2: But the children could not fly to the guy. They
• 26:10
Speaker 2: had lost their magic power. Therefore, the raven stuff fluttered

Speaker 3: Chapter two, the flood from the Tlingt long long ago,
• 26:41
Speaker 3: in the days of the animal people, Raven at the
• 26:44
Speaker 3: head of Nas became angry. He said, let rain pour
• 26:49
Speaker 3: down all over the world. Let people die of starvation.
• 26:53
Speaker 3: At once it became so stormy. People could not get food,
• 26:57
Speaker 3: so they began to starve. The news were also broken up.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: Their houses fell in upon them, and they suffered very much.
• 27:05
Speaker 3: Then Naska Kayelle, Raven at the head of Nass, asked
• 27:09
Speaker 3: for his jointed dance hat. When he put it on,
• 27:13
Speaker 3: water began pouring out of the top of it. It
• 27:15
Speaker 3: is from Raven that the Indians obtained this kind of
• 27:18
Speaker 3: a hat. When the water rose to the house floor,
• 27:22
Speaker 3: Raven and his mother climbed upon the lowest retaining timber.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: This house we are speaking of, although it looked like
• 27:29
Speaker 3: a house to them, was really part of the world.
• 27:31
Speaker 3: It had eight rows of retaining timbers. When Raven and
• 27:36
Speaker 3: his mother climbed to a higher timber, the people of
• 27:39
Speaker 3: the world were climbing into the hills. Then Raven and
• 27:42
Speaker 3: his mother climbed to the fourth timber. By that time
• 27:46
Speaker 3: the water was half way up the mountains. When the
• 27:49
Speaker 3: house was nearly full of water, Raven's mother got into
• 27:52
Speaker 3: the skin of a CAx. To this very day, tlingketts
• 27:56
Speaker 3: do not eat the cacks because it was Raven's mother.
• 28:00
Speaker 3: Then Raven got into the skin of a white bird
• 28:02
Speaker 3: with copper colored bill. Now the cacks is a diver
• 28:06
Speaker 3: and stayed upon the surface of the water. But Raven
• 28:09
Speaker 3: flew to the very highest cloud and hung there by
• 28:13
Speaker 3: his bill, but his tail was in the water. After
• 28:17
Speaker 3: Raven had hung in the cloud for days and days,
• 28:20
Speaker 3: nobody knows how long, he pulled his bill out and
• 28:23
Speaker 3: prayed to fall on a piece of kelp. He thought
• 28:26
Speaker 3: the water had gone down. When Raven fell upon the
• 28:29
Speaker 3: kelp and flew away, he found the waters just half
• 28:33
Speaker 3: way down the mountains. Raven flew around until he met
• 28:37
Speaker 3: a shark which had been swimming around with a long stick.
• 28:41
Speaker 3: Raven took the stick and climbed down it as a
• 28:43
Speaker 3: ladder to the bottom of the ocean, but Raven had
• 28:46
Speaker 3: set eagle to watch the tide. Raven wandered around the
• 28:51
Speaker 3: bottom of the ocean until he came to an old woman.
• 28:54
Speaker 3: He said to her, how cold I am after eating
• 28:57
Speaker 3: those sea urchins. He repeated this over and over again.
• 29:03
Speaker 3: At last the woman said, what low tide is this
• 29:06
Speaker 3: Raven talking about. Raven did not answer. The woman kept repeating,
• 29:12
Speaker 3: what low tide are you talking about? Then Raven became angry.
• 29:16
Speaker 3: He said, I will stick these sea urchins into you
• 29:19
Speaker 3: if you don't keep quiet. At last, he did so.
• 29:23
Speaker 3: Then the woman began singing, don't Raven, the tide will
• 29:26
Speaker 3: go down if you don't stop. But the water was
• 29:29
Speaker 3: receding as Raven had told it to in his magic words.
• 29:33
Speaker 3: Raven asked Eagle, who was watching the tide, how far
• 29:36
Speaker 3: down is the tide now? The tide is as far
• 29:40
Speaker 3: down as half a man. How far down is the tide?
• 29:43
Speaker 3: He asked again. The tide is very low, said Eagle.
• 29:47
Speaker 3: Then the old woman started singing her magic song again.
• 29:51
Speaker 3: Raven said, let it get dry all around the world.
• 29:55
Speaker 3: After a while, Eagle said, the tide is very low now,
• 29:59
Speaker 3: you can hardly see any water. Raven said, let it
• 30:03
Speaker 3: get still drier. At last everything was dry. This is
• 30:08
Speaker 3: the lowest tide there ever was. All the salmon and
• 30:11
Speaker 3: whales and seals lay on the sands because the water
• 30:14
Speaker 3: was so low. Then the people killed them for food.
• 30:18
Speaker 3: They had enough food to last them a long time.
• 30:22
Speaker 3: When the tide began to rise again, the people were frightened.
• 30:25
Speaker 3: They feared there would be another flood, so they carried
• 30:28
Speaker 3: their food back a long distance. Afterward, Raven returned to
• 30:32
Speaker 3: nas River and found that people there had not changed
• 30:36
Speaker 3: their ways. They were dancing and feasting. They asked Raven
• 30:40
Speaker 3: to join them. End of chapter two, Chapter three of

Speaker 3: the Origin of the tides from the sets out. A
• 31:07
Speaker 3: long time ago, a man wandered down the Nass River.
• 31:10
Speaker 3: Wherever he camped, he made rocks of curious shapes. Now
• 31:14
Speaker 3: his name was Ka, the raven. The Tlingett call him Yell.
• 31:19
Speaker 3: Ka wandered all over the world. At last he traveled westward. Now,
• 31:24
Speaker 3: at that time the sea was always high in the
• 31:27
Speaker 3: middle of the world. Ka discovered a rock in the sea.
• 31:31
Speaker 3: He built a house under the rock. Then he made
• 31:34
Speaker 3: a hole through it and through the earth, and fitted
• 31:36
Speaker 3: a lid to it. Raven put a man in charge
• 31:39
Speaker 3: of the hole. Twice a day he opens the lid,
• 31:42
Speaker 3: and twice each day he closes it. When the hole
• 31:46
Speaker 3: is open, the water rushes down through it into the depths.
• 31:49
Speaker 3: Then it is ebb tide. When he closes the lid,
• 31:53
Speaker 3: the water rises again, then it is flood tide. Once
• 31:58
Speaker 3: upon a time, Tail, a Tilicket chief, while hunting sea otters,
• 32:03
Speaker 3: was carried out to Cause Rock by the tide. The
• 32:06
Speaker 3: current was so strong he could not escape. When Tail
• 32:10
Speaker 3: was drawn toward the rock, he saw a few small
• 32:13
Speaker 3: trees growing on it. Tail threw his canoe line over
• 32:17
Speaker 3: one of the trees. Thus he escaped, being carried down
• 32:20
Speaker 3: by the water into the hole under the rock. After
• 32:24
Speaker 3: some time, he heard a noise the man was putting
• 32:27
Speaker 3: the lid on the hole. Then the water began to rise.
• 32:31
Speaker 3: Tail paddled rapidly away. He paddled away until the tide
• 32:35
Speaker 3: began to ebb again. Then he fastened his canoe to
• 32:39
Speaker 3: a large stone near by, and waited until flood time
• 32:43
Speaker 3: came again. Thus Tail escaped. End of chapter three.

Speaker 2: Raven stole a great mouthful of water, but as he

• 33:40
Speaker 2: These drops made the rivers the nasts, Skina, Stickeen, and chilcat.
• 33:46
Speaker 2: Raven said, the water that I dropped down upon the

Speaker 2: earth here and there will whirl all the time. There

Speaker 2: will be plenty of water, but it will not flood

Speaker 3: Groundhog's house for the winter. Now, groundhogs go into their
• 35:42
Speaker 3: holes in September. At home, they lived like people. People
• 35:46
Speaker 3: to them are animals. So Raven spent the winter with
• 35:50
Speaker 3: Groundhog and became very tired of it, but he could
• 35:53
Speaker 3: not get out. Groundhog enjoyed himself, but Raven acted like
• 35:57
Speaker 3: a prisoner. Raven kept shouting, Winter comes on, Winter comes on.
• 36:03
Speaker 3: Raven thought the groundhog had power to shorten the winter. Now,
• 36:07
Speaker 3: at that time, groundhog had to stay in his hole
• 36:09
Speaker 3: for six months. At that time, groundhog had six toes,
• 36:14
Speaker 3: one for each month of winter. Then Raven pulled one
• 36:18
Speaker 3: toe off each foot so that the winter would be shorter.
• 36:21
Speaker 3: That is why the groundhog now has but five toes.

Speaker 2: to the groundhog people to get Now, the groundhog people
• 37:02
Speaker 2: know when slides ascend from the mountains, and they know
• 37:05
Speaker 2: that spring is then near had so they throw all
• 37:07
Speaker 2: of their winter food out of their burrows. Raven wanted
• 37:11
Speaker 2: them to do this. He said, there was going to
• 37:14
Speaker 2: be a world snowslide. Groundhog chief answered, well, nobody in
• 37:19
Speaker 2: this town knows about it. In the spring, when the
• 37:22
Speaker 2: snowslides did come, the groundhowks threw out all their green
• 37:25
Speaker 2: herbs and their roots from their burrows. Therefore, Raven said
• 37:29
Speaker 2: to the people, I am going to have a feast.
• 37:32
Speaker 2: I am going to invite the whole world. Raven was
• 37:35
Speaker 2: going to invite everyone because he had heard that the
• 37:38
Speaker 2: ganaka Det had a chilcat blanket and a chilcat hat,
• 37:41
Speaker 2: and he wanted to see them. First. He invited the

Speaker 2: in the world at the right time, they came. When

Speaker 2: was surrounded by a fog inside of the house. However,

• 38:50
Speaker 3: he sat all the way up and down the porcupines back,

Speaker 3: so that the bears would be afraid of it. That

Speaker 3: is why bears never eat porcupines, Raven said to the porcupine.

Speaker 2: went back into their country, so the Chilcat people to

Speaker 2: this day make their money by going there. Raven also
• 39:48
Speaker 2: thought the Chilcats how to make secret storehouses outside of
• 39:51
Speaker 2: their villages, and he taught them how to put salmon
• 39:54
Speaker 2: into the storehouses and keep them frozen over winter. That
• 39:58
Speaker 2: is how the Chilcats got their name from toil storehouse
• 40:02
Speaker 2: and sat salmon or even also showed the Chilcats the
• 40:06
Speaker 2: first seeds of Indian tobacco and taught them how to
• 40:09
Speaker 2: plant it. After the tobacco was grown, he dried it
• 40:12
Speaker 2: and pounded it up with burned clampshaws. The Chilcats made
• 40:16
Speaker 2: a great deal of money by trading tobacco with the Athapascans. Afterward,

Speaker 2: Raven went beyond Copper River to Yukatat. There he showed

Speaker 2: Barry Judson, Chapter ten, Raven's marriage. After Raven had left
• 40:59
Speaker 2: alone a long while, he decided to get married. It
• 41:03
Speaker 2: was late in the fall and the birds were flying southward,
• 41:06
Speaker 2: so Raven flew away in the path of the geese
• 41:08
Speaker 2: and the birds on their way to summerland. Raven stopped
• 41:11
Speaker 2: directly in the path. Soon, Raven saw young goose coming near.
• 41:15
Speaker 2: He looked down at his feet and called, who will
• 41:18
Speaker 2: marry me? I am a very nice man. The goose
• 41:21
Speaker 2: flew on. Soon a black brand appeared. Raven looked down
• 41:25
Speaker 2: at his feet and called, who will marry me? I
• 41:28
Speaker 2: am a very nice man. The black brand flew on.
• 41:31
Speaker 2: Raven looked after her. He said, what kind of people
• 41:35
Speaker 2: are these? They do not even stop to listen. A
• 41:38
Speaker 2: duck came near. Raven hid his face and called, who
• 41:41
Speaker 2: will marry me? I am a very nice man. The
• 41:44
Speaker 2: duck looked toward him, then flew on. Raven said, ah,
• 41:48
Speaker 2: I came very near it. Then I shall succeed this time.
• 41:53
Speaker 2: Soon a whole family of white front geese came along.
• 41:56
Speaker 2: There were the parents, four brothers, and a sister. Raven
• 42:00
Speaker 2: called out, who wants to marry me. I am a
• 42:02
Speaker 2: fine hunter. I am young and handsome. The geese alighted
• 42:06
Speaker 2: just beyond him. Raven thought, now I will get a wife.
• 42:11
Speaker 2: Raven saw near him a pretty white stone with a
• 42:13
Speaker 2: hole in it. He picked it up, strung it on
• 42:16
Speaker 2: a long grass stem, and hung it about his neck.
• 42:19
Speaker 2: Then he pushed up his beak so that it slid
• 42:22
Speaker 2: to the top of his head like a mask, so
• 42:24
Speaker 2: he became a dark colored young man. Then he walked
• 42:27
Speaker 2: up to the geese. Each of the geese pushed up
• 42:30
Speaker 2: its bill in the same manner. They became nice looking people.
• 42:34
Speaker 2: Raven like the girl. He gave her the stone, thus
• 42:37
Speaker 2: choosing her first wife, and she hung it about her
• 42:39
Speaker 2: own neck. They all pushed down their bills again and
• 42:42
Speaker 2: became birds. So they flew south toward the summer land.
• 42:46
Speaker 2: The geese flapped their wings heavily and flew slowly. Raven,
• 42:50
Speaker 2: on outspread wing, glided on ahead. The geese looked after him,
• 42:54
Speaker 2: saying how light and graceful he is. When Raven became tired,
• 43:00
Speaker 2: said we had better stop early and look for a
• 43:03
Speaker 2: place to sleep. Soon they were all asleep. The next morning,
• 43:08
Speaker 2: the geese were awake early, they wanted to be off.
• 43:11
Speaker 2: Raven was sound asleep. Father who's wakened him? He said,
• 43:16
Speaker 2: we must make haste. It will snow here soon. We
• 43:19
Speaker 2: cannot wait. So the geese flapped their wings and flew
• 43:23
Speaker 2: slowly and heavily along. Raven let the others with outspread wings.
• 43:28
Speaker 2: He was always above or ahead of the others. They said,
• 43:31
Speaker 2: see how light and graceful he is. Thus they traveled
• 43:35
Speaker 2: until they came to the seashore. They feasted upon the
• 43:38
Speaker 2: berries on the bushes around it. Soon they were asleep.
• 43:42
Speaker 2: Early the next morning, the geese made ready to go
• 43:45
Speaker 2: without breakfast. Raven was hungry, but the geese would not wait.
• 43:49
Speaker 2: As they flapped their wings and started, Father Goo said,
• 43:52
Speaker 2: we will stop once and a way to rest. Then
• 43:55
Speaker 2: our next flight will bring us to the other shore.
• 43:59
Speaker 2: Raven began to be afraid, but he was ashamed to
• 44:01
Speaker 2: say so. The geese flapped through wings slowly and flew
• 44:05
Speaker 2: steadily heavily along. Raven, with outspread wings, glided ahead. After
• 44:11
Speaker 2: a long time, Raven began to fall behind. His wings ached.
• 44:15
Speaker 2: The geese flew steadily on. Raven flapped heavily along, then
• 44:19
Speaker 2: glided on his outstretched wings. But he grew more and
• 44:22
Speaker 2: more tired. He fell further and further behind. At last
• 44:26
Speaker 2: the keys look back, father who said he must be tired.
• 44:30
Speaker 2: I thought he was slight and active.
• 44:32
  Speaker 1: We will wait.
• 44:34
Speaker 2: The geese settled close together in the water. Raven flew
• 44:37
Speaker 2: slowly up, gasping for breath. He sat down upon their backs.
• 44:42
Speaker 2: When Raven had his breath again, he put his hand
• 44:44
Speaker 2: on his breast. He said, I have an arrow here
• 44:48
Speaker 2: from an old war. It paints me greatly. That is
• 44:51
Speaker 2: why I fell behind. After resting, the geese rose from
• 44:55
Speaker 2: the water. They flapped slowly along. Raven flew with them.
• 44:59
Speaker 2: After a while, Raven began to fall behind. He grew
• 45:02
Speaker 2: more and more tired. At last the geese looked back.
• 45:06
Speaker 2: Father Goo said he must be tired.
• 45:08
  Speaker 1: We will wait.
• 45:10
Speaker 2: So the geese sang down together in the water, while
• 45:13
Speaker 2: Raven flew slowly up to them and sank down upon
• 45:15
Speaker 2: their backs. Raven said, I have an arrow head which
• 45:19
Speaker 2: pierced my heart in an old war. That is why
• 45:21
Speaker 2: I fell behind. Raven's wife put her hand on his breast.
• 45:26
Speaker 2: She could feel it beating like a hammer. She said
• 45:28
Speaker 2: she could not feel an arrow head, so the geese
• 45:31
Speaker 2: rose again from the water. They flapped slowly along, but
• 45:35
Speaker 2: Raven's wings were very tired. Before long he fell behind again.
• 45:39
Speaker 2: Again the geese waited for him. Then the geese brothers
• 45:42
Speaker 2: began to talk among themselves. They said, we do not
• 45:46
Speaker 2: believe he has an arrow head in his heart. How
• 45:48
Speaker 2: could he live now this last time? When they rested,
• 45:52
Speaker 2: they could see the far off shore. Father Goo said
• 45:55
Speaker 2: to Raven, we will not wait for you again. We
• 45:58
Speaker 2: will not rest until we reached the shore. So the
• 46:02
Speaker 2: geese rose from the water and flapped slowly along. Raven's
• 46:06
Speaker 2: wings seemed very heavy that he flew nearer and nearer
• 46:09
Speaker 2: the shore. But Raven flew nearer and nearer the waves.
• 46:13
Speaker 2: As he came close to the water, he shrieked to
• 46:15
Speaker 2: his wife, leave me the white stone. Throw the white
• 46:19
Speaker 2: stone back to me. It was a magic stone. Thus
• 46:23
Speaker 2: Raven cried. Then he sank down into the water, but
• 46:26
Speaker 2: the geese had reached the land. Raven tried to rise
• 46:29
Speaker 2: from the water. His swings were not spread. Raven drifted
• 46:33
Speaker 2: back and forth with the waves. The white caps of
• 46:36
Speaker 2: the surf buried him. Only once in a while could
• 46:39
Speaker 2: he get his beak above the water to breathe. Then
• 46:42
Speaker 2: a great wave cast him on the shore. Then he
• 46:45
Speaker 2: struggled up the beach. He reached some bushes where he
• 46:48
Speaker 2: pushed up his beak. Thus he became a small, dark
• 46:51
Speaker 2: colored man. Then he took off his raven coat and mask.
• 46:55
Speaker 2: He hung them on a bush to dry. Raven made
• 46:57
Speaker 2: a fire drill out of dry wood and made a fire.
• 47:00
Speaker 2: Thus he dried himself. End of chapter ten recording by

Speaker 3: Chapter eleven Raven and the Seals from the Simchien. As
• 47:28
Speaker 3: Raven traveled along, he came to a house where a
• 47:31
Speaker 3: man lived near the edge of the water. Raven said
• 47:34
Speaker 3: to him, I will be your friend. The man said
• 47:38
Speaker 3: that is good. Now the beach in front of the
• 47:41
Speaker 3: house was full of seals. Raven ate them all. During
• 47:44
Speaker 3: two nights, he ate all the seals in front of
• 47:47
Speaker 3: the house. Then he was hungry again. Raven killed the man.
• 47:52
Speaker 3: Then he used his canoe and harpoon. Raven used those
• 47:56
Speaker 3: he speared four seals. Then he returned to the shore.
• 48:00
Speaker 3: He took the seals out of the canoe and began
• 48:02
Speaker 3: cutting wood. Then he built a fire and placed stones
• 48:06
Speaker 3: in it in order to heat them. Afterwards, he put
• 48:09
Speaker 3: the seals on a pile of hot stones. He cooked
• 48:12
Speaker 3: the four seals and covered them with skunk cabbage leaves.
• 48:16
Speaker 3: Raven then raised the cover and took out a seal.
• 48:19
Speaker 3: He ate it. Then he stretched out his hand and
• 48:22
Speaker 3: took another seal. Now there was Stump sitting near by.
• 48:27
Speaker 3: Raven held the seal in his hands and said to
• 48:29
Speaker 3: the stump, don't you envy me, Stump. Then he went
• 48:34
Speaker 3: into the woods. At once Stump arose and sat down
• 48:37
Speaker 3: in the hole in which the seals were steaming. The
• 48:40
Speaker 3: seals were right under Stump. Then Raven returned carrying leaves
• 48:45
Speaker 3: of skunk cabbage. When he saw Stump sitting on his seals,
• 48:49
Speaker 3: he cried. He was much troubled because he was hungry.
• 48:53
Speaker 3: Then he took a stick and dug the ground. He
• 48:55
Speaker 3: cried all the time he was digging. He found a
• 48:58
Speaker 3: little bit of meat and ate them, but he could
• 49:01
Speaker 3: not do anything. He cried all the time because he
• 49:05

• 50:18
Speaker 4: They fished all night. When the sun rose, little Pitch

• 50:49
Speaker 4: Then Little Pitch's answer was very weak because the sun

Speaker 4: Raven did another thing. He induced the Olachin to come
• 53:37
Speaker 4: up to Nas River. He said to them go up
• 53:40
Speaker 4: on both sides of the river. They did so. Then
• 53:44
Speaker 4: Raven's canoe was quite full of fish. He had not
• 53:47
Speaker 4: used his rake, but the whole shoal of olachin jumped
• 53:51
Speaker 4: into his canoe. Then he camped at crab Apple place.
• 53:55
Speaker 4: He clamped on the top of the stone. Then very
• 53:58
Speaker 4: slippery became the top of that stone, that the olacchin
• 54:01
Speaker 4: could not be lost. He then put the olecchin on

Speaker 4: was a good fisherman. Raven said to lan Otter, you

Speaker 4: will always have your house on a point where there
• 55:27
Speaker 4: are breezes from all sides. Whenever a canoe with people capsizes,
• 55:31
Speaker 4: you will save the people and make them your friends.
• 55:35
Speaker 4: This is how the land Otter man was created, because
• 55:38
Speaker 4: Raven told this to land Otter. If people who are
• 55:41

• 55:45
Speaker 4: they become Shamans. It is through the land Otters that

Speaker 4: painted them. Raven painted Coot last, than Kot began to

Speaker 4: paint Raven, who wanted many bright colors. So Kot painted

Speaker 4: Raven with bright colors with one hand, but in the

• 56:58
Speaker 4: blackened all the bright with charcoal. Then Raven was angry

• 58:10
Speaker 4: Oh you black one. Raven turned and flew far away,

Speaker 4: crying ca ca co. He flew far away across the

Speaker 4: watching until Marmot came home bringing food. But Marmot could

• 58:56
Speaker 4: Then you can eat me. But let me see you

Speaker 4: Oh Raven, Raven, Raven, how well you dance? Raven danced.

Speaker 4: Then they stopped to rest. Marmott said, I like your dancing.

Speaker 4: Now I will sing again, So shut your eyes and

Speaker 4: dance your best. Raven shut his eyes and danced clumsily
• 59:26
Speaker 4: around Marmott sang, Oh, Raven, Raven, Raven, what a graceful dancer,

Speaker 4: Oh Raven, Raven, Raven, What a fool you are? Because Marmott,
• 59:37
Speaker 4: with a quick run, had darted between Raven's legs and

Speaker 4: was safe in his hole. When Marmott was safe in

Speaker 4: Recording by Vern Seward. Myths and Legends of Alaska by
• 1:00:35
Speaker 4: Catherine Barry Judson, Chapter eighteen, The Bringing of the Light
• 1:00:40
Speaker 4: by raven Eskimo Loria Yukon. In the first days, the
• 1:00:46
Speaker 4: sun and the moon were in the sky. Then the
• 1:00:49
Speaker 4: sun and the moon were taken away, and the people
• 1:00:52
Speaker 4: had only the light of the stars. Even the magic
• 1:00:55
Speaker 4: of the sharmans failed to bring back the light. Now
• 1:00:58
Speaker 4: there was an orphan in the village who sat with
• 1:01:01
Speaker 4: the humble people over the entrance of the kashim. He
• 1:01:05
Speaker 4: was despised by everyone. When the magic of the shamans
• 1:01:09
Speaker 4: failed to bring back the sun and the moon into
• 1:01:11
Speaker 4: the sky, the boy mocked them. He said, what fine
• 1:01:14
Speaker 4: shamans you must be. You cannot bring back the light,
• 1:01:18
Speaker 4: but I can. Then the shamans were angry and beat
• 1:01:22
Speaker 4: that boy and drove him out of the kashim. Now
• 1:01:25
Speaker 4: this boy was like any other boy until he put
• 1:01:28
Speaker 4: on a raving coat he had then he became raven.
• 1:01:32
Speaker 4: Now the boy went to his aunt's house. He told
• 1:01:35
Speaker 4: her the shamans had failed to bring back the light
• 1:01:38
Speaker 4: and they had beaten him. When he mocked them. The
• 1:01:41
Speaker 4: boy said, where is the sun in the moon. The
• 1:01:44
Speaker 4: aunt said, I do not know. The boy said, I
• 1:01:47
Speaker 4: am sure you know. Look what a finely sown coat
• 1:01:50
Speaker 4: you wear. You could not sow it that way if
• 1:01:53
Speaker 4: you did not know where the light is. Thus they argued.
• 1:01:57
Speaker 4: Then the aunt said, if you wish to find the light,
• 1:02:00
Speaker 4: go far to the south. Go on snow shoes. You
• 1:02:04
Speaker 4: will know the place when you get there. The boy
• 1:02:06
Speaker 4: put on his snow shoes and set off toward the south.
• 1:02:10
Speaker 4: Many days he traveled, and the darkness was always the same.
• 1:02:14
Speaker 4: When he had gone a very long way, he saw
• 1:02:17
Speaker 4: far in front of him a ray of light. Then
• 1:02:20
Speaker 4: the boy hurried on. As he went farther, the light
• 1:02:23
Speaker 4: showed again, plainer than before. Then it vanished for a time.
• 1:02:28
Speaker 4: Thus it kept appearing and vanishing. At last the boy
• 1:02:32
Speaker 4: came to a large hill. One side was brightly lighted,
• 1:02:37
Speaker 4: the other side was black as night. Close to the
• 1:02:40
Speaker 4: hill was a hut. A man was shoveling snow from
• 1:02:43
Speaker 4: in front of it. The man tossed the snow high
• 1:02:46
Speaker 4: in the air. Then the light could not be seen
• 1:02:49
Speaker 4: until the snow fell. Then the man tossed the snow again,
• 1:02:53
Speaker 4: so the light kept appearing and disappearing. Close to the
• 1:02:57
Speaker 4: house was a large ball of fire. The boy stopped
• 1:03:01
Speaker 4: and began to plan how to steal the ball of light.
• 1:03:04
Speaker 4: Then the boy walked up to the man. He said,
• 1:03:07
Speaker 4: why do you throw up the snow? It hides the
• 1:03:10
Speaker 4: light from our village. The man said, I am not
• 1:03:13
Speaker 4: hiding the light. I am cleaning away the snow. Who
• 1:03:17
Speaker 4: are you? Where do you come from? The boy said,
• 1:03:20
Speaker 4: it is so dark in our village. I do not
• 1:03:23
Speaker 4: want to stay there. I came here to live with
• 1:03:25
Speaker 4: you all the time. The man asked, yes, said the boy.
• 1:03:30
Speaker 4: The man said, all right, come into the house with me.
• 1:03:34
Speaker 4: Then he dropped his shovel on the ground. He stooped
• 1:03:37
Speaker 4: down to lead the way through the underground passage into
• 1:03:41
Speaker 4: the house. He let the curtain fall in front of
• 1:03:43
Speaker 4: the door as he passed, because he thought the boy
• 1:03:46
Speaker 4: was close beside him. The boy caught up the ball
• 1:03:50
Speaker 4: of light and put it in the upturned flap of
• 1:03:52
Speaker 4: his fur coat. Then he picked up the shovel and
• 1:03:55
Speaker 4: ran away toward the north. He ran until his feet
• 1:03:59
Speaker 4: were tired. Then he put on his raven coat and
• 1:04:02
Speaker 4: flew away. He flew rapidly to the north. Raven could
• 1:04:06
Speaker 4: hear the man shriek behind him. The man was pursuing him,
• 1:04:10
Speaker 4: but Raven flew faster. Then the man cried, keep the light,
• 1:04:14
Speaker 4: but give me my shovel. Raven said, no, you cannot
• 1:04:18
Speaker 4: have your shovel. You made our village dark. So Raven
• 1:04:22
Speaker 4: flew faster. Now as Raven flew, he broke off a
• 1:04:26
Speaker 4: little piece of the light. This made day. Then he
• 1:04:30
Speaker 4: went on for a long time in darkness until he
• 1:04:33
Speaker 4: broke off another piece of light. Thus it was day again.
• 1:04:37
Speaker 4: So as Raven flew to the village, he broke off
• 1:04:40
Speaker 4: pieces of light. When Raven reached to cashim of his
• 1:04:43
Speaker 4: own village, he threw away the last piece. He went
• 1:04:47
Speaker 4: into the cashim and said to the shamans, I have
• 1:04:50
Speaker 4: brought back the light. It will be light and then dark,
• 1:04:53
Speaker 4: so as to make day and night. After this, Raven
• 1:04:57
Speaker 4: went out upon the ice, because his home was on
• 1:04:59
Speaker 4: the sea coat. Then a great wind arose and the
• 1:05:03
Speaker 4: ice drifted with him across the sea to the land
• 1:05:05
Speaker 4: on the other side. Thus Raven brought back the light.
• 1:05:09
Speaker 4: It is night and day as he said it would be.
• 1:05:12
Speaker 4: But sometimes the nights are very long because Raven traveled
• 1:05:15
Speaker 4: a long way without throwing away a piece of the light.

Speaker 4: grown quite large, he walked down to the bank of

Speaker 4: the Nas River one day until he heard the noise
• 1:06:03
Speaker 4: people were making in the darkness as they fished for Olachan.
• 1:06:07
Speaker 4: Now all the people in the world lived in one

Speaker 4: place on the Nas River. They had heard that Raven
• 1:06:13
Speaker 4: at the head of the Nass had something called daylight.
• 1:06:16
Speaker 4: They were afraid of it and talked about it a
• 1:06:18
Speaker 4: great deal. Raven shouted to the fisherman, why do you
• 1:06:22
Speaker 4: make so much noise. If you make so much noise,
• 1:06:26
Speaker 4: I will bring daylight here. Eight canoe loads of people
• 1:06:29
Speaker 4: were fishing there. They said, you are not nasky Kyo.
• 1:06:34
Speaker 4: You are not Raven at the head of Nass how
• 1:06:36
Speaker 4: can you bring daylight? They kept making much noise. Then
• 1:06:40
Speaker 4: Raven opened the box, and daylight shot over the world
• 1:06:44
Speaker 4: like lightning. They made still more noise, So Raven opened
• 1:06:48
Speaker 4: the box wide, and there was daylight everywhere. Then the
• 1:06:51
Speaker 4: people became frightened. Some ran into the woods, and some
• 1:06:55
Speaker 4: jumped into the water. Those that had clothes of fur
• 1:06:59
Speaker 4: sealed skins jumped into the water. They became seals. Those

Speaker 4: that had clothing of bear skins, martin skins, and wolfskins

Speaker 4: Chapter twenty, the naming of the birds flinget Rangel. Now
• 1:07:50
Speaker 4: Raven went around among the merds, teaching them. He said,
• 1:07:54
Speaker 4: to grouse, you are to live in a place where
• 1:07:57
Speaker 4: it is wintry. You will always live in a place
• 1:08:00
Speaker 4: high up, so you will have plenty of breezes. Then
• 1:08:03
Speaker 4: Raven gave Grouse four white pebbles. He said, you will
• 1:08:07
Speaker 4: never starve as long as you have these four pebbles.
• 1:08:10
Speaker 4: Raven said to Ptarmigan, you will be the maker of snowshoes.
• 1:08:14
Speaker 4: You will know how to travel in snow. It is
• 1:08:17
Speaker 4: from these birds that the Athapaskans learn how to make
• 1:08:21
Speaker 4: snowshoes and how to put the lacings on. Raven camee
• 1:08:26
Speaker 4: next to wild canary that lives all year round in
• 1:08:29
Speaker 4: the Thlingett country. He said, you will be the head
• 1:08:33
Speaker 4: among the very small birds. You are not to live
• 1:08:36
Speaker 4: on the same food as human beings. Keep away from them.
• 1:08:40
Speaker 4: Then Raven said to Robin, you will make people happy
• 1:08:43
Speaker 4: by your whistle. You will be a good whistler. Then
• 1:08:47
Speaker 4: Raven said to Koon the flicker, you will be chief
• 1:08:51
Speaker 4: among birds of your size. You will not be found
• 1:08:53
Speaker 4: in all places. You will seldom be seen. Then Raven
• 1:08:58
Speaker 4: said to Logan, a bird that lives on the ocean,
• 1:09:01
Speaker 4: you will seldom be seen near shore. You will live
• 1:09:04
Speaker 4: on lonely rocks far out on the ocean. When Raven
• 1:09:08
Speaker 4: came to snipes, he said, you will always go in flocks.
• 1:09:12
Speaker 4: You will never go out alone. Therefore we always see
• 1:09:15
Speaker 4: snipes in flocks. Raven said to Askakati, a small bird
• 1:09:20
Speaker 4: with yellow green plumage, You will always go in flocks.
• 1:09:24
Speaker 4: You will always be on the tree tops. That is
• 1:09:26
Speaker 4: where your food is. Raven said to a very small
• 1:09:30
Speaker 4: bird Katlaie, the size of a butterfly. You will be liked.
• 1:09:35
Speaker 4: You will be seen only to give good luck. People
• 1:09:38
Speaker 4: will hear your voice, but seldom see you. Then to
• 1:09:41
Speaker 4: blue jay, Raven said, you will have very fine clothes.
• 1:09:45
Speaker 4: You will be a good talker. People will take colors
• 1:09:48
Speaker 4: from your clothes. Then, Raven said to Zunkaha, you will
• 1:09:52
Speaker 4: never be seen unless the north wind is going to blow.
• 1:09:55
Speaker 4: That is what the name Zukaha means. To crow, Raven said,
• 1:10:00
Speaker 4: you will make lots of noise. You will be great talkers.
• 1:10:03
Speaker 4: That is why when you hear one crow, you hear
• 1:10:06
Speaker 4: a lot of others. Right afterwards, Raven said to Gassiadu,
• 1:10:11
Speaker 4: you will be seen only when warm weather is coming.
• 1:10:14
Speaker 4: Never come near except when warm weather is coming. To hummingbird,
• 1:10:19
Speaker 4: Raven said, people will enjoy seeing you. If a person
• 1:10:23
Speaker 4: sees you once, he will want to see you again.
• 1:10:26
Speaker 4: Raven said to eagle, you will be very powerful and
• 1:10:29
Speaker 4: above all birds. Your eyesight will be very good. It
• 1:10:33
Speaker 4: will be easy for you to get what you want.
• 1:10:36
Speaker 4: Then Raven put talons on the eagle and said they
• 1:10:39
Speaker 4: will be useful to him. Thus Raven taught all the birds.

Speaker 1: Once Raven came to a large town which was deserted.
• 1:13:40
Speaker 1: Everyone seemed to have died. Raven entered the largest house,
• 1:13:45
Speaker 1: but he felt someone continually pushing him away, yet he
• 1:13:50
Speaker 1: saw no one there. It was a ghost house. The
• 1:13:54
Speaker 1: place was called ghost Town. Raven then loaded a canoe
• 1:13:58
Speaker 1: with provisions from the empty houses and started to paddle away.
• 1:14:03
Speaker 1: He did not notice that a long rope was fastened
• 1:14:06
Speaker 1: to the stern of the canoe and to a tree
• 1:14:08
Speaker 1: on the shore. When Raven had paddled the length of
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: the rope, the canoe was pulled right back to the beach.
• 1:14:16
Speaker 1: All the provisions were carried back to the houses, yet
• 1:14:20
Speaker 1: Raven could see no one. Then a ghost dropped a
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: large stone on Raven's foot. This made him very lame.

Speaker 1: How Raven stole the Lake ok Haida Queen Charlotte Islands.
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: After Raven had made the crows black because they had
• 1:15:08
Speaker 1: eaten his salmon, crows had always been white before that,
• 1:15:12
Speaker 1: they say, he met some people with feathers on their
• 1:15:15
Speaker 1: heads and gambling stick bags on their backs. They said,
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: what is the matter. Raven said, oh, my father and
• 1:15:26
Speaker 1: mother are dead. Then they started home with him. These
• 1:15:31
Speaker 1: were the beavers. They say. They were going out to gamble,
• 1:15:35
Speaker 1: but turned back on account of him. The next morning,
• 1:15:38
Speaker 1: they put their gambling stick bags upon their backs and
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: started off again. Raven flew around behind a screen lo
• 1:15:48
Speaker 1: A lake lay there, and a creek flowing from it
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: was a fish trap. The fish trap was so full
• 1:15:54
Speaker 1: of salmon it looked as if someone were shaking it.
• 1:15:58
Speaker 1: There were plenty of salmon in it, and in the
• 1:16:00
Speaker 1: lake were very small canoes passing each other. Several points
• 1:16:05
Speaker 1: of land were red with cranberries. Raven pulled out the
• 1:16:09
Speaker 1: fish trap, folded it together, and laid it down at
• 1:16:12
Speaker 1: the edge of the lake. Then he rolled it up
• 1:16:14
Speaker 1: with the lake and house, put them under his arm,
• 1:16:18
Speaker 1: and pulled himself up into a tree that stood close by.
• 1:16:22
Speaker 1: They were not heavy for his arm. He had rolled
• 1:16:25
Speaker 1: the lake up just as though it were a blanket.
• 1:16:28
Speaker 1: Raven sat in the tree half way up. After a while,
• 1:16:33
Speaker 1: some one came. His house and the lake were not there.
• 1:16:37
Speaker 1: After he had looked about him for some time, he
• 1:16:40
Speaker 1: looked up lo There sat Raven with their property. Then
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: the beavers went quickly to the tree. They began cutting
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: it with their teeth. When it began to fall, Raven
• 1:16:52
Speaker 1: went to another one. When that began to fall, he
• 1:16:55
Speaker 1: went to another. After the beavers had cut down many
• 1:16:58
Speaker 1: trees in this way, they gave up. They then traveled
• 1:17:03
Speaker 1: about for a long time, they say. After a long
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: time they found a lake and settled down on it. Then,
• 1:17:10
Speaker 1: after Raven had traveled around for a while with the lake,
• 1:17:13
Speaker 1: he came to a large open place. He unrolled the lake.
• 1:17:17
Speaker 1: There there it lay. He did not let the fish

Speaker 1: trap or the house go. He kept them to teach

Speaker 5: long time ago, a canoe load of Indians were out
• 1:18:01
Speaker 5: seal hunting. The weather was calm and the sea was smooth.
• 1:18:05
Speaker 5: Then the killer whale kept near the canoe, and the
• 1:18:08
Speaker 5: young men threw stones at it. They hit the fin
• 1:18:11
Speaker 5: of the killer whale with several stones. Then the whale
• 1:18:13
Speaker 5: went to the beach. Soon the men in the canoe
• 1:18:16
Speaker 5: saw a smoke rising from the beach. They went to
• 1:18:19
Speaker 5: see who was there. When they reached the shore, there
• 1:18:22
Speaker 5: was not the scana the killer whale, but a man
• 1:18:25
Speaker 5: cooking some food. The man said, why did you throw
• 1:18:28
Speaker 5: stones at my canoe? You have broken it. Now go
• 1:18:31
Speaker 5: get cedar withs in the woods and mend it. So
• 1:18:35
Speaker 5: the men mended the broken canoe. When they had finished,

Speaker 5: the man said, turn your backs to the water. Cover
• 1:18:40
Speaker 5: your heads with your fur robes don't look until I

Speaker 5: call you. They all did as he told them. They
• 1:18:46
Speaker 5: heard the canoe grate on the beach as it was
• 1:18:48
Speaker 5: hauled down into the water. Then the man said, look.
• 1:18:52
  Speaker 6: Now.
• 1:18:53
Speaker 5: They looked, and there was the canoe in the water.
• 1:18:56
Speaker 5: But when the canoe came to the second breaker, it
• 1:18:58
Speaker 5: went under. When it came to the surface, behold, there
• 1:19:02
Speaker 5: was no canoe. There was a scana, a killer whale.

Speaker 5: The man's spirit was inside the scana. End of chapter

Speaker 1: the bear with his heart between his eyes, ghanikadet, the

• 1:20:01
Speaker 1: In some of them also the raven and the thunderbird figure.
• 1:20:05
Speaker 1: Only the Indians can really interpret the various weavings, and
• 1:20:08
Speaker 1: their interpretations vary. End of note. In the days of
• 1:20:14
Speaker 1: the animal people long long ago, all the animals were
• 1:20:18
Speaker 1: divided into different tribes. In those days, also, animals could
• 1:20:22
Speaker 1: take off their furry skins. Then they looked just like
• 1:20:26
Speaker 1: people now. In some days long ago, a group of
• 1:20:30
Speaker 1: women once went out to search for wild salary in
• 1:20:33
Speaker 1: the early spring. They found it growing here and there,
• 1:20:36
Speaker 1: and spent all day gathering it. Then they tied it
• 1:20:39
Speaker 1: in bundles and started home with it on their backs.
• 1:20:42
Speaker 1: Now among these women was the daughter of a chief.
• 1:20:45
Speaker 1: She picked twigs as she followed in the trail in
• 1:20:48
Speaker 1: the evening light, and then slipped into the footprints of
• 1:20:51
Speaker 1: a brown bear. The jolt loosened her pack. She stopped
• 1:20:55
Speaker 1: to readjust her bundle of salary. She said sharp words
• 1:20:59
Speaker 1: about bears. Then she hastened on to rejoin her companions,
• 1:21:04
Speaker 1: who were already lost in the dark. Suddenly, the chief's
• 1:21:08
Speaker 1: daughter heard footsteps behind her. A handsome young man joined her.
• 1:21:13
Speaker 1: Soon he asked her to be his wife. The chief's
• 1:21:16
Speaker 1: daughter consented, so she went home with him. They walked far,
• 1:21:21
Speaker 1: far into the woods until they came to Bear village.
• 1:21:25
Speaker 1: Then the chief's daughter knew that her lover belonged to
• 1:21:28
Speaker 1: the Bear tribe. After a while, the chief's daughter became unhappy.
• 1:21:34
Speaker 1: She wanted to go back to her father's home, but
• 1:21:37
Speaker 1: the Bear tribe washed her so she could not escape.
• 1:21:41
Speaker 1: One day, chief's daughter reached the shore. Out on the water,
• 1:21:46
Speaker 1: she saw a fisherman in a boat, and she called
• 1:21:49
Speaker 1: to him to rescue her. The fisherman touched his canoe
• 1:21:52
Speaker 1: with his killing club, and in one bound it sprang
• 1:21:55
Speaker 1: to the shore just as the bear and some of
• 1:21:58
Speaker 1: his tribe appeared. The fisherman began to fight Bear, but
• 1:22:02
Speaker 1: he could not kill him. Then the chief's daughter told
• 1:22:05
Speaker 1: him to strike Bear between the eyes because his heart
• 1:22:09
Speaker 1: was there, so Bear was killed. The fisherman took the
• 1:22:14
Speaker 1: chief's daughter in his canoe, but behold, he was no
• 1:22:18
Speaker 1: fisherman at all. It was Ghana Cadet, the spirit of
• 1:22:22
Speaker 1: the sea. So the woman married Gane Cadet, who was
• 1:22:26
Speaker 1: very kind to her. After a long while, the chief's
• 1:22:30
Speaker 1: daughter became unhappy again. She wanted her son to be
• 1:22:33
Speaker 1: trained by her people, as the custom was. Then gn
• 1:22:37
Speaker 1: Cadet permitted her to return to earth with the boy,
• 1:22:41
Speaker 1: But he made her promise that she would weave him
• 1:22:43
Speaker 1: a blanket telling of her life and his courtship. So
• 1:22:48
Speaker 1: the woman returned to Earth from the sea. Then she
• 1:22:51
Speaker 1: wove for gn Cadet the blanket. This was the first
• 1:22:54
Speaker 1: chilcat blanket. Now one day yelled the Raven, wandering along
• 1:23:00
Speaker 1: on the sea shore, entered a great cavern under the sea.
• 1:23:04
Speaker 1: There he found gon Cadet wearing a beautiful chilcat blanket.
• 1:23:08
Speaker 1: Gona Caadet welcomed Raven and offered him food. He placed
• 1:23:12
Speaker 1: food before him in two long carved platters. After Raven
• 1:23:16
Speaker 1: had feasted, gon Cadet taught him many dances and gave
• 1:23:20
Speaker 1: him a copy of the blanket pattern. Then Raven taught
• 1:23:24
Speaker 1: the people how to weave the blankets, but he taught
• 1:23:26
Speaker 1: the Shimshian tribe first, after where the chilcats learned how

Speaker 6: there was water over all the earth. There were no people.
• 1:24:20
Speaker 6: It was very cold. The water was covered with ice,
• 1:24:24
Speaker 6: and the ice pieces ground together, making long ridges and hummocks.
• 1:24:29
Speaker 6: Then a man came from the other side of the
• 1:24:31
Speaker 6: great water and stopped on the ice hills. He took
• 1:24:34
Speaker 6: for his wife a wolf. Then their children grew up.
• 1:24:38
Speaker 6: Each pair spoke a different language from that of their parents,
• 1:24:42
Speaker 6: or from that of their brothers and sisters. So each
• 1:24:45
Speaker 6: pair went out in a different direction and built houses
• 1:24:48
Speaker 6: on the ice hills. Then the snow melted and ran
• 1:24:51
Speaker 6: down the hillsides. It scooped out ravines and river beds
• 1:24:55
Speaker 6: and made the earth. Thus the earth was made and

Speaker 6: The first Woman Eskimo bearing straits. Long long ago, there
• 1:28:32
Speaker 6: were many men living in the Northland, but there was
• 1:28:35
Speaker 6: no woman among them. Far away, in the Southland lived
• 1:28:39
Speaker 6: one woman. At last, one of the young men in
• 1:28:42
Speaker 6: the Northland traveled south to the home of the woman
• 1:28:46
Speaker 6: and married her. He thought, I have a wife, while
• 1:28:50
Speaker 6: the son of the headsman has none. Now the son
• 1:28:53
Speaker 6: of the headsman had also started to travel to the
• 1:28:56
Speaker 6: home of the woman in the Southland. He stood in
• 1:28:59
Speaker 6: the pastage to the house and heard the husband talking
• 1:29:02
Speaker 6: to himself. So he waited until all the people were asleep.
• 1:29:07
Speaker 6: Then the son of the headsman crept into the house
• 1:29:10
Speaker 6: and began to drag the woman away. He caught her
• 1:29:13
Speaker 6: by her shoulders. Then the husband was awakened. He ran
• 1:29:17
Speaker 6: to the passage and caught the woman by her feet.
• 1:29:21
Speaker 6: So the men pulled until they pulled the woman in two.
• 1:29:24
Speaker 6: The son of the headsman carried the upper part of
• 1:29:26
Speaker 6: her body to the north. Then they began to carve
• 1:29:29
Speaker 6: wood to make each woman complete. Thus there were now
• 1:29:33
Speaker 6: two women. The woman in the South was a good dancer,
• 1:29:37
Speaker 6: but she could not do fine needlework in sowing the
• 1:29:40
Speaker 6: furs because her hands were wooden. The woman in the
• 1:29:44
Speaker 6: North was a poor dancer because her feet were wooden,
• 1:29:47
Speaker 6: but she could sew with fine stitches in the firs.
• 1:29:51
Speaker 6: So all the women of the North are skillful with
• 1:29:54
Speaker 6: their hands, and all the women of the South are

Speaker 6: good dancers, even to this day. Thus you may know

• 1:32:32
Speaker 6: Origin of the winds Eskimo, Lower Yukon. A long time ago,
• 1:32:39
Speaker 6: a man and his wife had no children, So one
• 1:32:42
Speaker 6: night the man went out of the house to find
• 1:32:44
Speaker 6: a solitary tree that grew on the tundra. First he
• 1:32:48
Speaker 6: saw a long track of bright light, like that made
• 1:32:51
Speaker 6: by the moon shining on the snow. It led across
• 1:32:55
Speaker 6: the tundra, so far far along the trail of bright
• 1:32:59
Speaker 6: light the man until he saw a beautiful tree, all alone,
• 1:33:04
Speaker 6: shining in the bright light. He took out his hunting knife,
• 1:33:08
Speaker 6: cut off part of the trunk, and went home again
• 1:33:11
Speaker 6: over the bright trail. When the man reached home, he
• 1:33:14
Speaker 6: carved a boy doll from the wood, and his wife
• 1:33:17
Speaker 6: made fur clothes for it. Then the man carved little
• 1:33:21
Speaker 6: wood dishes from the scraps of wood. The wife set
• 1:33:24
Speaker 6: the doll on the bench opposite the entrance in the
• 1:33:27
Speaker 6: place of honor. She placed before it food and water.
• 1:33:32
Speaker 6: That night, when all was dark, they heard low whistling sounds.
• 1:33:36
Speaker 6: The woman said, do you hear that it was the doll.
• 1:33:41
Speaker 6: When they made a light, they saw that the doll
• 1:33:43
Speaker 6: had eaten the food and drunk the water. They saw
• 1:33:46
Speaker 6: that its eyes moved. In the morning, the Doll was gone.
• 1:33:51
Speaker 6: The man and his wife could not find it, but
• 1:33:54
Speaker 6: they saw the tracks of the boy Doll leading away
• 1:33:57
Speaker 6: from the door. The tracks followed the direction of the
• 1:34:00
Speaker 6: trail of light, which the man had followed the night before.
• 1:34:04
Speaker 6: So the man and his wife went into the house,
• 1:34:08
Speaker 6: but Doll followed the bright path until he came to
• 1:34:10
Speaker 6: the edge of day, where the sky comes down to
• 1:34:13
Speaker 6: the earth. There were holes in the sky wall covered
• 1:34:17
Speaker 6: with gut skin. In the east. Doll saw the gut
• 1:34:21
Speaker 6: skin cover over the hole in the sky wall bulging inward.
• 1:34:26
Speaker 6: Doll stopped and said, it is very quiet in here.
• 1:34:29
Speaker 6: I think a little wind will make it better. Doll
• 1:34:33
Speaker 6: drew his knife and cut the cover loose about the
• 1:34:35
Speaker 6: edge of the hole. A strong wind blew through, bringing
• 1:34:39
Speaker 6: with it a live reindeer. Looking through the hole, Doll
• 1:34:43
Speaker 6: saw another world just like the earth. Then he drew
• 1:34:47
Speaker 6: the cover loosely over the hole and said to east,
• 1:34:51
Speaker 6: wind sometimes blow hard, sometimes lightly, sometimes do not blow
• 1:34:57
Speaker 6: at all. Dall walked along the sky wall to another
• 1:35:01
Speaker 6: opening at the southeast. The gut skin cover bulged inward.
• 1:35:06
Speaker 6: Then Doll cut the cover loose at the edges, and
• 1:35:09
Speaker 6: a great gale swept in. It brought reindeer, trees and bushes.
• 1:35:14
Speaker 6: Then Doll fastened the cover lightly and said, sometimes blow hard,
• 1:35:19
Speaker 6: sometimes lightly, sometimes do not blow at all. Then Doll
• 1:35:24
Speaker 6: came to a hole in the south and the gut
• 1:35:27
Speaker 6: skin cover bulged inward. He cut the edges loose, and
• 1:35:31
Speaker 6: a hot wind rushed in. It brought rain and spray
• 1:35:35
Speaker 6: from the Great Salt Sea, which lay beyond the sky
• 1:35:38
Speaker 6: hole on that side. Then Doll closed the opening lightly
• 1:35:43
Speaker 6: and said to south wind, sometimes blow hard, sometimes lightly,
• 1:35:48
Speaker 6: sometimes do not blow at all. Doll walked along the
• 1:35:52
Speaker 6: sky wall to the west. There he saw another opening
• 1:35:56
Speaker 6: covered by gut skin, so he cut the edges loose,
• 1:36:00
Speaker 6: and west wind swept in, bringing with him rain with
• 1:36:03
Speaker 6: sleet and spray from the gray ocean. Then Doll fastened
• 1:36:07
Speaker 6: the edges of the gut skin loosely and said to
• 1:36:10
Speaker 6: west wind, sometimes blow hard, sometimes lightly, sometimes do not
• 1:36:16
Speaker 6: blow at all. So Doll passed along the sky wall
• 1:36:20
Speaker 6: to the northwest. When he cut the edges of the
• 1:36:23
Speaker 6: gut skin covering, a blast of cold wind rushed in,
• 1:36:26
Speaker 6: bringing snow and ice. Doll became cold he almost froze.
• 1:36:32
Speaker 6: Therefore Doll closed the hole quickly, saying sometimes blow hard,
• 1:36:37
Speaker 6: sometimes lightly, sometimes do not blow at all. Again, Doll
• 1:36:42
Speaker 6: went along the sky wall to the north, but it
• 1:36:45
Speaker 6: became so cold he had to leave it. So he
• 1:36:48
Speaker 6: went toward the center of the earth, away from the
• 1:36:51
Speaker 6: sky wall, until he saw the opening to the north.
• 1:36:54
Speaker 6: Then he went to the hole in the sky wall.
• 1:36:57
Speaker 6: But so great was the cold that Doll feared to
• 1:37:00
Speaker 6: cut the strings. He waited, Then he cut the strings quickly,
• 1:37:04
Speaker 6: the terrible north wind swept in, bringing with him great
• 1:37:08
Speaker 6: masses of snow and ice. North Wind strewed the snow
• 1:37:12
Speaker 6: and ice all over the earth plane. Then Doll closed
• 1:37:16
Speaker 6: the hole very quickly, yet he fastened it loosely. He
• 1:37:20
Speaker 6: said to north Wind, sometimes blow hard, sometimes lightly, sometimes
• 1:37:26
Speaker 6: do not blow at all. Then Doll traveled into the
• 1:37:29
Speaker 6: midst of the earth plane. He looked up and saw
• 1:37:32
Speaker 6: the sky arch resting upon long, slender poles, like a teepee,
• 1:37:37
Speaker 6: but of beautiful blue material. Then Dall went back to
• 1:37:41

Speaker 5: to the Seal people, made the killer whales. He first
• 1:41:59
Speaker 5: tried to them out of red cedar, then out of

• 1:42:05
Speaker 5: He took each set of figures to the beach and

Speaker 5: tried to make them swim, but they only floated on

Speaker 5: the killer whales swam. Nasien on one marked white lines

Speaker 5: from the corners of its mouth back to its head.
• 1:42:21
Speaker 5: He said, this is going to be the white mouthed

Speaker 5: go up into the inlets, go up into the head

Speaker 5: of the bays, hunt for seal, for halibit, and for

Speaker 7: Yukon died. When she died, she went to sleep for
• 1:45:08
Speaker 7: a while. Then someone shook her arm and said, get up,
• 1:45:11
Speaker 7: do not sleep, you are dead. Then she saw she
• 1:45:14
Speaker 7: was in her grave box, and the shade of her
• 1:45:16
Speaker 7: grandfather was shaking her. Then she went with her grandfather
• 1:45:20
Speaker 7: back to the village. But the country she knew had disappeared.
• 1:45:23
Speaker 7: In its place was a strange village which reached as
• 1:45:25
Speaker 7: far as the eye could see. As she reached the village,
• 1:45:29
Speaker 7: the old man told her to go into one of
• 1:45:31
Speaker 7: the houses. As soon as she entered it, a woman
• 1:45:33
Speaker 7: picked up a stick of wood and raised it to
• 1:45:35

• 1:45:39
Speaker 7: So the young woman ran out, crying to her grandfather.
• 1:45:42
Speaker 7: He said, this is the village of the dog shades.
• 1:45:44
Speaker 7: Now you see how living dogs feel when beaten by people.
• 1:45:48
Speaker 7: They came to another village. Here she saw a man
• 1:45:51
Speaker 7: lying on the ground with grass growing up through his joints.
• 1:45:54
Speaker 7: He could move, but he could not rise. The grandfather
• 1:45:57
Speaker 7: said this shade was punished for pulling up and showing
• 1:46:00
Speaker 7: grass stems when he was unearthed. Then the grandfather suddenly disappeared.
• 1:46:05
Speaker 7: The girl followed a trail to another village, but she
• 1:46:07
Speaker 7: came to a swift river. This river was made up
• 1:46:11
Speaker 7: of the tears of people who on earth weep for
• 1:46:13
Speaker 7: the dead. When the girl saw she could not cross
• 1:46:16
Speaker 7: the river, she began to weep. At once, a mass
• 1:46:19
Speaker 7: of straw floated down the river to her. Upon this
• 1:46:22
Speaker 7: as a bridge, she crossed the stream. Before she reached
• 1:46:26
Speaker 7: the village, the shades smelled her. They crowded around her,
• 1:46:29
Speaker 7: saying who is she? Where does she come from? They
• 1:46:32
Speaker 7: looked for the tote marks on her clothing. Someone said
• 1:46:35
Speaker 7: where is she? Where is she? And her grandfather came
• 1:46:38
Speaker 7: toward her. He led her into a house near by,
• 1:46:41
Speaker 7: and there was her grandmother. The old woman asked her
• 1:46:44
Speaker 7: if she were thirsty. The girl looked about and saw
• 1:46:47
Speaker 7: only one water vessel, made like those of her own village.
• 1:46:51
Speaker 7: This had in it their own Yukon water. It had
• 1:46:54
Speaker 7: been given them at the festival of the Dead by
• 1:46:55
Speaker 7: the girl's father. The other tubs had only the water
• 1:46:59
Speaker 7: of the village. Of the shapes. The old woman gave
• 1:47:02
Speaker 7: the girl a piece of deer fat. This too had

• 1:47:47
Speaker 7: The young wife of a chief's son died, and the
• 1:47:50
Speaker 7: young man was so sorrowful he could not sleep. Early
• 1:47:53
Speaker 7: one morning, he put on his fine clothes and started off.
• 1:47:56
Speaker 7: He walked all day and all night. He went through
• 1:47:59
Speaker 7: the world a long distance, and then to a valley.
• 1:48:02
Speaker 7: The trees were very thick, but he could hear voices
• 1:48:05
Speaker 7: far away. At last he saw light through the trees,
• 1:48:08
Speaker 7: and then came to a wide flat stone on the
• 1:48:10
Speaker 7: edge of a lake. Now all this time, the young
• 1:48:12
Speaker 7: man had been walking in the Deaths Trail. He saw
• 1:48:15
Speaker 7: houses and people on the other side of the lake.
• 1:48:17
Speaker 7: He could see them moving around, so he shouted, come
• 1:48:20
Speaker 7: over and get me, but they did not seem to
• 1:48:23
Speaker 7: hear him. Upon the lake, a little canoe was being
• 1:48:25
Speaker 7: paneled about by one man, and all the shore was grassy.
• 1:48:28
Speaker 7: The chief's son shouted a long while, but no one
• 1:48:30
Speaker 7: answered him. At last, he whispered to himself, why don't
• 1:48:33
Speaker 7: they hear me? At once a person across the lake said,
• 1:48:38
Speaker 7: some one is shouting. When he whispered, they heard him.
• 1:48:43
Speaker 7: The voice said, also, some one has come up from dreamland.
• 1:48:46
Speaker 7: Go and bring him over. When the chief's son reached
• 1:48:50
Speaker 7: the other side of the lake, he saw his wife.
• 1:48:52
Speaker 7: He was very happy to see her again. People asked

Speaker 7: him to sit down. They gave him something to eat,
• 1:48:57
Speaker 7: but his wife said, don't eat that. If you eat that,
• 1:49:00
Speaker 7: you will never get back, so he did not eat it.
• 1:49:03
Speaker 7: Then his wife said, you had better not stay here long.
• 1:49:06
Speaker 7: Let us go right away. So they were taken back
• 1:49:09
Speaker 7: in the same canoe. It is called Ghost's canoe, and
• 1:49:12
Speaker 7: it is the only one on that lake. They landed
• 1:49:15
Speaker 7: at the broad flat rock where the chief's son had
• 1:49:17
Speaker 7: stood calling. It is called ghost Trock, and it is
• 1:49:19
Speaker 7: the very end of the death Trail. Then they started
• 1:49:22
Speaker 7: down the trail through the valley and through the thick woods.
• 1:49:25
Speaker 7: The second night they reached the chief's house. The chief's
• 1:49:29
Speaker 7: son told his wife to stay outside. He went in
• 1:49:31
Speaker 7: and said to his father, I have brought my wife back.
• 1:49:34
Speaker 7: The chief said, why don't you bring her in. The
• 1:49:37
Speaker 7: chief laid down a nice mat with fur robes on
• 1:49:40
Speaker 7: it for the young wife. The young man went out
• 1:49:42
Speaker 7: to get his wife, but when he came in with her,
• 1:49:44
Speaker 7: they could only see him. When he came very close,
• 1:49:47
Speaker 7: they saw a deep shadow following him. When his wife
• 1:49:50
Speaker 7: sat down and they put a Martin skin robe around her,
• 1:49:52
Speaker 7: it hung about the shadow, just as if a person
• 1:49:54
Speaker 7: were sitting there. When she ate, they saw only the
• 1:49:57
Speaker 7: spoon moving up and down, but not the shadow of
• 1:49:59
Speaker 7: her hands. It looked very strange to them. Afterward, the
• 1:50:02
Speaker 7: chief's son died, and the ghosts of both of them
• 1:50:04
Speaker 7: went back to ghost Land. End of chapter thirty nine,

Speaker 7: Myths and Legends of Alaska by Catherine Barry Judson. The
• 1:50:31
Speaker 7: Sky Country a clinket story. Long ago, a man's wife
• 1:50:36
Speaker 7: was stolen from him. He cared for her so much
• 1:50:39
Speaker 7: that he thought he would follow her, so he began
• 1:50:41
Speaker 7: to walk. He thought he was walking along the beach,
• 1:50:43
Speaker 7: but he was following a wide trail through the woods.
• 1:50:46
Speaker 7: He walked on for a long time with his head
• 1:50:48
Speaker 7: bent down, until he saw smoke ahead. When he came near,
• 1:50:52
Speaker 7: he saw a woman tanning a skin. He showed her
• 1:50:54
Speaker 7: a necklace he had made. He said, I will give
• 1:50:56
Speaker 7: you this string if you will tell me where my
• 1:50:58
Speaker 7: wife is. The woman's said, she is over at the
• 1:51:01
Speaker 7: next camp. So he at last reached his wife and
• 1:51:04
Speaker 7: stayed there a long time. Now the people of this
• 1:51:07
Speaker 7: village wanted to kill him. They kindled a fire and
• 1:51:09
Speaker 7: began to drag him to it. He said, oh, how
• 1:51:12
Speaker 7: glad I am. I want to die. Then they stopped
• 1:51:15
Speaker 7: and began to drag him toward the water. The man
• 1:51:17
Speaker 7: said he was afraid of water, so they threw him in.
• 1:51:20
Speaker 7: He came up in the middle of the lake. People said,
• 1:51:22
Speaker 7: see him, he is looking at us. The man laughed.
• 1:51:27
Speaker 7: He said, the water is just where I like to be.
• 1:51:29
Speaker 7: He said this because he was a good swimmer, and
• 1:51:31
Speaker 7: there was much rain in his country. He stayed in
• 1:51:34
Speaker 7: the water all the time. He remained in that country. Now,
• 1:51:37
Speaker 7: all this while, the man and his wife had really
• 1:51:39
Speaker 7: been in the sky. Now they wanted to get down.
• 1:51:43
Speaker 7: They started back to the house of a certain woman.
• 1:51:45
Speaker 7: She was the spider. The house was her web. The
• 1:51:49
Speaker 7: woman put them into a web and began to lower
• 1:51:51
Speaker 7: them to the earth. Before they started, the woman said,
• 1:51:54
Speaker 7: if you get caught on anything, jerk backward and forward
• 1:51:56
Speaker 7: until the web comes loose. She thought they might get
• 1:51:59
Speaker 7: caught on the edges of the clouds. So the man
• 1:52:02
Speaker 7: and his wife reached the earth safely, and the web
• 1:52:04
Speaker 7: was drawn up to the sky. End of chapter forty.

• 1:52:35
Speaker 7: Once upon a time, all the people were together in
• 1:52:38
Speaker 7: a singing house. While they were dancing, the sun disappeared.
• 1:52:42
Speaker 7: No one knew where it had gone. Because it was
• 1:52:44
Speaker 7: so dark, people could not go hunting, and soon their
• 1:52:46
Speaker 7: provisions were exhausted. Then they told the women to mend
• 1:52:50
Speaker 7: their clothing carefully and to make as many boots as possible.
• 1:52:53
Speaker 7: These they put into bags. Then the people set out
• 1:52:56
Speaker 7: to search for the sun. They followed the sea coast.
• 1:53:00
Speaker 7: They traveled so far they wore out their boots, so
• 1:53:02
Speaker 7: they put on new boots from their bags. Yet it
• 1:53:05
Speaker 7: was dark all the time. After many days, they came
• 1:53:08
Speaker 7: to a country where were many many seals and walrus
• 1:53:11
Speaker 7: and deer. The language of the people was different from
• 1:53:13
Speaker 7: their own. After a while they learned to talk it
• 1:53:16
Speaker 7: a little. They asked these people where to find the sun.
• 1:53:20
Speaker 7: These people said that the sun was far off. Before
• 1:53:23
Speaker 7: they came to the Sun's country, they would come to
• 1:53:25
Speaker 7: five places. This was the first place, but in the
• 1:53:28
Speaker 7: fourth place beyond there lived a woman who kept both
• 1:53:30
Speaker 7: the sun and moon in her house. So they went on.
• 1:53:34
Speaker 7: It was very cold, and they ran as fast as
• 1:53:36
Speaker 7: they could because it was so cold. Then their food
• 1:53:39
Speaker 7: gave out, but they reached a country where there was
• 1:53:42
Speaker 7: plenty to eat. Here, the people spoke a strange language.
• 1:53:46
Speaker 7: After a while they learned to talk it a little.
• 1:53:48
Speaker 7: These people told them that at the third place they
• 1:53:50
Speaker 7: reached they would find a woman who kept the sun
• 1:53:52
Speaker 7: and moon in her house. The people ran on. They
• 1:53:55
Speaker 7: ran because it was so very cold. Then, when their
• 1:53:59
Speaker 7: food was gone, they reached another country where there was
• 1:54:01
Speaker 7: plenty of food. The language of the people was different
• 1:54:04
Speaker 7: from their own, but after a while they learned to
• 1:54:06
Speaker 7: understand it a little. These people said that at the
• 1:54:10
Speaker 7: second place which they would reach, live a woman named
• 1:54:12
Speaker 7: etud Lukpiac who had both sun and moon in her house.
• 1:54:15
Speaker 7: But it was doubtful if they would be able to
• 1:54:17
Speaker 7: get them. Then they went on again. They had to
• 1:54:21
Speaker 7: run as fast as they could to keep warm. It
• 1:54:23
Speaker 7: was very cold. When their food was almost gone, they
• 1:54:26
Speaker 7: reached the country of the dwarfs. It was a country
• 1:54:29
Speaker 7: with plenty of food, walrus and seal and deer. The
• 1:54:33
Speaker 7: dwarfs tried to run away when they saw the large
• 1:54:35
Speaker 7: men coming, but the people caught them. The dwarf said
• 1:54:38
Speaker 7: that at the next place lived the woman Etudlukpiac, who
• 1:54:40
Speaker 7: had both sun and moon. As the people ran on
• 1:54:45
Speaker 7: from the country of the dwarfs, they found ice and
• 1:54:48
Speaker 7: drift wood in their way. They kicked it all aside.
• 1:54:51
Speaker 7: At that time the people were very strong and able
• 1:54:53
Speaker 7: to lift heavy stones. After they had run a long way,
• 1:54:56
Speaker 7: they saw a singing house. When they came near, they
• 1:54:59
Speaker 7: went very slowly because they were afraid. At last, one
• 1:55:02
Speaker 7: of the men tied his jacket around his waist and
• 1:55:04
Speaker 7: his trousers around his knees. Then he crept cautiously through
• 1:55:07
Speaker 7: the entrance and put his head through the door. At
• 1:55:09
Speaker 7: the bottom of the floor, he saw a young woman
• 1:55:11
Speaker 7: it would look Piac, sitting in the middle of the
• 1:55:13
Speaker 7: house toward the rear. Her father was sitting in the
• 1:55:16
Speaker 7: middle of the house on the right hand side, and
• 1:55:18
Speaker 7: her mother on the left hand side. At the back
• 1:55:20
Speaker 7: of the house, in the right hand corner on the
• 1:55:22
Speaker 7: rafter hung a large ball in the left hand corner,
• 1:55:25
Speaker 7: a small ball. The man whispered, itid Loukpiac. We came
• 1:55:29
Speaker 7: to ask you for some light. The mother said, give
• 1:55:32
Speaker 7: them the small ball. The man refused the small ball.
• 1:55:35
Speaker 7: He asked for the large one. Then ittid louk Piac
• 1:55:38
Speaker 7: took it down and gave it a kick. It fell
• 1:55:40
Speaker 7: right into the entrance hall. The people took the ball
• 1:55:43
Speaker 7: and ran outside. Then they tore the ball to pieces,
• 1:55:46
Speaker 7: and the daylight came out of it. It was not
• 1:55:48
Speaker 7: so warm at once, but it grew warmer day after day.
• 1:55:52
Speaker 7: If they had taken the small ball, it would have
• 1:55:53
Speaker 7: been light, but it would have remained cold. The small
• 1:55:56
Speaker 7: ball was the moon. End of chapter forty one Chapter

Speaker 7: shaman went to visit the great Chief, he flew like
• 1:56:37
Speaker 7: a bird up as high as the sky. Because of
• 1:56:39
Speaker 7: his magic. The sky was a land just like the earth,
• 1:56:42
Speaker 7: only the grass was long and grew downward toward the earth,
• 1:56:46
Speaker 7: and the grass was filled with snow. When the wind

Speaker 7: blows up in the sky, it rustles the long grass

Speaker 7: blows the snow loose in the sky, it falls down

Speaker 7: upon the earth from the long grass stems, and men
• 1:56:59
Speaker 7: call it a snow up in the sky. Among the

Speaker 7: grass there are many small round lakes. At night, these shine,

Speaker 7: lived four brothers and a sister. There was also a

Speaker 7: The brothers were hunters, and in the fall hunted at sea,

Speaker 7: But after the bladder feast was over, they went to
• 1:58:02
Speaker 7: the mountains and hunted reindeer, but the boy was lazy.
• 1:58:06
Speaker 7: Now the boy fell in love with the girl. One day,
• 1:58:08
Speaker 7: the girl took up a dish of meat and berries
• 1:58:10
Speaker 7: and went out of the house. There she saw a
• 1:58:13
Speaker 7: ladder leading up to the sky, with a line hanging
• 1:58:15
Speaker 7: down by the side of it. Taking hold of the line,
• 1:58:18
Speaker 7: the girl climbed the ladder, going up into the sky.
• 1:58:21
Speaker 7: Then her brother saw her and began at once to
• 1:58:23
Speaker 7: scold the boy. The boy caught up his seal skin trousers.
• 1:58:27
Speaker 7: Being in a hurry, he thrust his right leg into
• 1:58:29
Speaker 7: them and drew a deerskin sock upon the other foot.
• 1:58:31
Speaker 7: As he ran outside the house. There he saw the

• 1:58:36
Speaker 7: to climb the ladder to her, But the girl floated
• 1:58:39
Speaker 7: far away, the boy following her. Now the girl became
• 1:58:42
Speaker 7: the sun and the boy the moon. Ever, he pursues

Speaker 7: Myths and Legends of Alaska by Catherine Barry Judson. Beaver
• 2:07:17
Speaker 7: and Porcupine at Simschion's story. Now Beaver was the friend
• 2:07:23
Speaker 7: of Porcupine much. They loved each other. Then Beaver invited
• 2:07:28
Speaker 7: Porcupine to his house on the large lake. There, in
• 2:07:32
Speaker 7: the very middle of the lake was the house of Beaver.
• 2:07:35
Speaker 7: Now Beaver, on his part, liked the water, but Porcupine
• 2:07:37
Speaker 7: had no way to go from the shore to the lake,
• 2:07:40
Speaker 7: because he knew not how to swim. Therefore feared porcupine
• 2:07:43
Speaker 7: that he should die should his stomach be filled with water,
• 2:07:46
Speaker 7: because he knew not how to swim. Therefore this did
• 2:07:49
Speaker 7: beaver from the lake to the land. He went for porcupine.
• 2:07:53
Speaker 7: Only twice rose beaver above the water, going to where
• 2:07:55
Speaker 7: porcupine was sitting on the shore. Then said beaver to porcupine,
• 2:07:59
Speaker 7: I care you, fast hold my neck. Porcupine was afraid.
• 2:08:03
Speaker 7: He said to Beaver, I might die. You shall not die.
• 2:08:07
Speaker 7: Thus said the beaver to the porcupine. Then went up
• 2:08:11
Speaker 7: porcupine to the back of beaver. Beaver said, fast hold
• 2:08:14
Speaker 7: my neck. Thus did porcupine then swim beaver out on
• 2:08:18
Speaker 7: the water. But not long did he swim. Beaver dived.
• 2:08:23
Speaker 7: Then much troubled was porcupine because he knew not how
• 2:08:25
Speaker 7: to swim. Now the beavers really own the country of
• 2:08:28
Speaker 7: the water, but among the mountains is the country of porcupine.
• 2:08:31
Speaker 7: Twice rose beaver above the water. Then reached hea the
• 2:08:35
Speaker 7: middle of the great lake, where floated his home. But
• 2:08:38
Speaker 7: much troubled was porcupine, unlest he die in the water.
• 2:08:41
Speaker 7: Then they entered the house of beaver. Then they ate.
• 2:08:45
Speaker 7: Now this for food. Had the beaver sticks were the
• 2:08:47
Speaker 7: food for his feast. Then really troubled was the porcupine
• 2:08:51
Speaker 7: there to eat sticks. Yet porcupine ate the stick well.
• 2:08:55
Speaker 7: Then one day said beaver to porcupine. Friend, Now we play,
• 2:09:00
Speaker 7: Then said beaver, how he would play? I carry you
• 2:09:03
Speaker 7: four times I emerged from the water. Surely I die,
• 2:09:06
Speaker 7: thus said the heart of porcupine. Yet he agreed. Beaver said,
• 2:09:11
Speaker 7: fast hold to my neck, lying close against the nape
• 2:09:14
Speaker 7: of my neck. Then he was ready, the heart of
• 2:09:16
Speaker 7: porcupine to die. Then dived beaver. Yet first struck he
• 2:09:21
Speaker 7: the water with his tail. Thus he first splashed the
• 2:09:24
Speaker 7: water into the face of porcupine. Then dived beaver. Long
• 2:09:28
Speaker 7: was he under water. Then a little dead was porcupine.
• 2:09:32
Speaker 7: His stomach was full of water. Three times the beaver
• 2:09:35
Speaker 7: rose from the water. Then only once more remained. Then
• 2:09:38
Speaker 7: again dived Beaver. Almost dead was porcupine. Then with him
• 2:09:44
Speaker 7: he returned from lake to land. He took him. Then
• 2:09:48
Speaker 7: porcupine went back to his tribe. When again he reached
• 2:09:51
Speaker 7: his tribe to his house, he invited the people. Then
• 2:09:54
Speaker 7: into the house of Porcupine went the invited ones. Then
• 2:09:57
Speaker 7: he told them what Beaver had done at his great
• 2:09:59
Speaker 7: house on the lake. He told the people what Beaver,
• 2:10:02
Speaker 7: who had invited him had done. He said, almost dead.
• 2:10:05
Speaker 7: Was I through my friend? Then said his people, good,
• 2:10:08
Speaker 7: you also invite him also play with him. This did Porcupine.
• 2:10:13
Speaker 7: He also invited Beaver, his friend, to the house of Beaver.
• 2:10:16
Speaker 7: Did he did send? Then came Beaver into the valley.
• 2:10:19
Speaker 7: Up he went. Then came he to the house of Porcupine.
• 2:10:23
Speaker 7: Then this did Porcupine. When Beaver entered the house, Porcupine
• 2:10:27
Speaker 7: struck on the fireplace with his own tail. Then it burnt.
• 2:10:30
Speaker 7: Then Beaver made a song in the middle burnt the
• 2:10:33
Speaker 7: tale of little Porcupine. Pa in the middle burnt the
• 2:10:36
Speaker 7: tale of little Porcupine. Then ran Porcupine around in front
• 2:10:41
Speaker 7: of Beaver to play with his friend. Now, when this
• 2:10:44
Speaker 7: was finished, what did the porcupine? He got food for
• 2:10:47
Speaker 7: the beaver to eat. Then this did the porcupine bark
• 2:10:50
Speaker 7: of a tree and leaves of a tree. Did he
• 2:10:51
Speaker 7: give him for a feast? Then on his part, Beaver
• 2:10:54
Speaker 7: was afraid to eat. Then this said the porcupine to
• 2:10:57
Speaker 7: his great friend Beaver, heat fast friend, eat fast friend.
• 2:11:01
Speaker 7: Then so did the beaver. Then said porcupine. Friend. Thus
• 2:11:05
Speaker 7: said he to the beaver. Tomorrow morning, we play you
• 2:11:08
Speaker 7: and I. There stands a tree on a grassy slope.
• 2:11:11
Speaker 7: There is my playground. Then they slept, but porcupine sang,
• 2:11:15
Speaker 7: Now along the edge, I walk outfalls my shooting star.
• 2:11:20
Speaker 7: Then spoke Porcupine to the sky, and the sky did
• 2:11:23
Speaker 7: so clear became the sky. The ground was ice in
• 2:11:27
Speaker 7: the morning. Now again porcupine invited the people to a
• 2:11:31
Speaker 7: feast for great beaver. Then porcupine said, we play friend.
• 2:11:35
Speaker 7: There stands my playground. Now very sharp was the cold.
• 2:11:39
Speaker 7: The ground was ice where water ran down. Slippery was
• 2:11:42
Speaker 7: it with ice? But beaver followed porcupine. Then again was
• 2:11:46
Speaker 7: beaver troubled. Always slippery were his hands, But long were
• 2:11:49
Speaker 7: the claws of porcupine. Then porcupine returned to see grape beaver.
• 2:11:54
Speaker 7: Then said, porcupine, come do it. Friend. Thus said porcupine
• 2:11:57
Speaker 7: to grape beaver. But the beaver could not cross because
• 2:12:00
Speaker 7: icy was the mountain. Then this did the porcupine. He
• 2:12:04
Speaker 7: took the hands of beaver. Then across he led him.
• 2:12:08
Speaker 7: Thus across he got. Porcupine was going to play with beaver,
• 2:12:11
Speaker 7: just as he also did once. So they reached the
• 2:12:14
Speaker 7: place where stood the tree. Good, go up, thus said
• 2:12:18
Speaker 7: porcupine to beaver. Then much troubled was beaver. He was afraid.
• 2:12:22
Speaker 7: Well see this, said porcupine. So porcupine went up first,
• 2:12:26
Speaker 7: up he went to the very top. Then he let
• 2:12:29
Speaker 7: go of the top of the tree. As soon as
• 2:12:31
Speaker 7: he dropped, this he said, while coming down on de Belch,
• 2:12:35
Speaker 7: On de belch, then he dropped on a stone, but arose.
• 2:12:40
Speaker 7: Not dead was he, then said porcupine to beaver. See friend,
• 2:12:44
Speaker 7: it is not hard. Then up on the tree carried
• 2:12:48
Speaker 7: he beaver. He said, fast, hold to my neck, And
• 2:12:52
Speaker 7: very fast he held to the neck of porcupine. Then,
• 2:12:55
Speaker 7: when porcupine reached near the top of the tree, he
• 2:12:57
Speaker 7: put beaver on a branch. Then greatly afraid was beaver,
• 2:13:01
Speaker 7: for his hands were not good for holding fast to
• 2:13:03
Speaker 7: a tree. Only a porcupine knows that, because long are
• 2:13:06
Speaker 7: his claws. Then thus said porcupine, really, hold fast, friend,
• 2:13:11
Speaker 7: I will go down first. The beaver did so. All
• 2:13:14
Speaker 7: around the branch were his hands. Then beaver let go
• 2:13:17
Speaker 7: the tree into space. He went again, he said, on
• 2:13:20
Speaker 7: de Belac on de belach. Then once more he dropped
• 2:13:25
Speaker 7: on the stones. But not dead. Was he much troubled
• 2:13:28
Speaker 7: was the heart of great Beaver in holding the branch.
• 2:13:31
Speaker 7: Much troubled was he a falling. Then about the foot
• 2:13:34
Speaker 7: of the tree ran porcupine. Then up he looked to
• 2:13:37
Speaker 7: where was his friend? This said Porcupine, Go unfriend, It
• 2:13:40
Speaker 7: is not hard look at me. Not dead am I?
• 2:13:43
Speaker 7: Because I fell? Then Beaver let go of the branch.
• 2:13:47
Speaker 7: Thus said Beaver, as he fell lop lope, which means
• 2:13:52
Speaker 7: stone stone. Then Beaver struck the rocks. He lay on
• 2:13:57
Speaker 7: his back. He was dead. End of chapter fifty. Chapter

Speaker 7: the Upper Yukon Note. The camp robber is the slate
• 2:17:05
Speaker 7: colored Alaskan jay, troublesome for its habit of stealing food
• 2:17:08
Speaker 7: from the camps now. In the days of the animal people,
• 2:17:12
Speaker 7: the camp robber was a medicine man. One time, the
• 2:17:15
Speaker 7: people had nothing to eat, so they asked the medicine
• 2:17:17
Speaker 7: man to find food for them. Therefore, for six nights
• 2:17:20
Speaker 7: the men dreamed of a way to find food. The
• 2:17:22
Speaker 7: camp robber was the sixth man. He dreamt on the
• 2:17:25
Speaker 7: sixth night, then he called all the people together and
• 2:17:28
Speaker 7: told them to bring their snares with them. He took
• 2:17:31
Speaker 7: all the snares, made a pack of them, and put
• 2:17:33
Speaker 7: them on his back. But the people heaped up the
• 2:17:35
Speaker 7: snow in a great pile. Around this snow pile, the
• 2:17:38
Speaker 7: camp robber walked, chanting and singing, By and buy meat,
• 2:17:42
Speaker 7: will come, thus he sang. Then the camp robber reached
• 2:17:46
Speaker 7: into the snow and pulled out a caribou's head by
• 2:17:48
Speaker 7: the horns. This was not a real cariboo, It was
• 2:17:51
Speaker 7: the spirit cariboo. So the camp robber painted the horns
• 2:17:55
Speaker 7: and tail red and sent it back into the snow heap.
• 2:17:58
Speaker 7: The next day a great herd of carcame. The one

Speaker 7: and lifted her on their outspread wings, so they carried

Speaker 7: were many thunderbirds living in the mountains, but at last

Speaker 7: there were only two left. These birds made their home

• 2:19:54
Speaker 7: They hallowed out a great basin on the summit for

Speaker 7: down upon a village upon the river bank. From this perch,

• 2:20:20
Speaker 7: young birds flew away into the Northland, but the old
• 2:20:22
Speaker 7: birds remained in the nest. They had carried away so
• 2:20:25
Speaker 7: many fishermen that only the most daring would go out
• 2:20:27
Speaker 7: on the great river. One day, when a fisherman went
• 2:20:30
Speaker 7: to look at his traps, he cautioned his wife not
• 2:20:32
Speaker 7: to leave the house for fear of the thunderbirds. During
• 2:20:35
Speaker 7: the morning, she needed fresh water and started for the river.
• 2:20:38
Speaker 7: A noise like thunder filled the air. A black shadow
• 2:20:41
Speaker 7: fell over her, and a thunderbird darted down upon her.
• 2:20:44
Speaker 7: When the fishermen returned home to his house, people of
• 2:20:46
Speaker 7: the village told him of the thunderbird. He made no answer.
• 2:20:50
Speaker 7: He took his bow and quiver full of war hours
• 2:20:52
Speaker 7: and started for the mountain. When he reached the room
• 2:20:55
Speaker 7: with a great nest, he looked in. The old birds
• 2:20:57
Speaker 7: were away. The nest was full of young eagles with fiery,
• 2:21:01
Speaker 7: shining eyes and shrill cries. The hunter fitted a war arrow.
• 2:21:05
Speaker 7: The string twanged and the arrow killed a young thunderbird,
• 2:21:08
Speaker 7: so the hunter killed them all. The hunter hid behind
• 2:21:11
Speaker 7: a great rock near the nest. When the old birds
• 2:21:14
Speaker 7: came home, the thunder in their wings was heard even
• 2:21:16
Speaker 7: across the great River. Their cries of rage frightened the
• 2:21:19
Speaker 7: villagers on the river's bank. The mother birds swooped down
• 2:21:23
Speaker 7: upon the hunter beside the rock. Quickly he fitted a
• 2:21:25
Speaker 7: war arrow. The string twanged and the arrow bit deep
• 2:21:28
Speaker 7: into her throat. Then the mother bird, flapping her wings
• 2:21:31
Speaker 7: so that the hills shook, flew away to the northland.
• 2:21:34
Speaker 7: The father birds circled overhead and then swooped down upon
• 2:21:37
Speaker 7: the hunter. He crouched below the rocks, and the thunderbird's
• 2:21:40
Speaker 7: great talons caught only the rock. The hunter fitted a
• 2:21:43
Speaker 7: war arrow in his bow. The string twanged, and the
• 2:21:46
Speaker 7: heavy war arrow bit deep under his great wing. Spreading
• 2:21:50
Speaker 7: his wings like a black cloud in the sky, the
• 2:21:52
Speaker 7: thunderbird flew away to the Northland. End of chapter fifty

Speaker 7: Daktringett story long ago, when we were first born people
• 2:22:27
Speaker 7: hated us. Then the sky people brought war upon us.
• 2:22:31
Speaker 7: They destroyed us completely. One woman saved herself. She hid

Speaker 7: in a hole which she dug under a log. Afterward,
• 2:22:39
Speaker 7: various people came to her. I wonder who can tell
• 2:22:41
Speaker 7: me about things? She said. Grizzly bear came near her.
• 2:22:45
Speaker 7: What can you do, she asked, Whenever I catch a man,
• 2:22:48
Speaker 7: I slept my paws down upon him. The woman said,
• 2:22:52
Speaker 7: that is nothing. Some one in the sun spoke to her.
• 2:22:55
Speaker 7: How am I said, a voice? What can you do?
• 2:22:59
Speaker 7: My father in the sun peeps out through the clouds

Speaker 7: the model clouds. So the woman married the child of
• 2:23:05
Speaker 7: the Sun. He lowered down from the sky a great

Speaker 7: enemy saw that, they came back. The father said, when
• 2:23:14
Speaker 7: the enemy get too strong, put your minds on me.
• 2:23:17
Speaker 7: So when the enemy became too strong, the women and
• 2:23:19
Speaker 7: her children put their minds on grandfather's son. He peeped
• 2:23:22
Speaker 7: out through the clouds upon the enemy. It quickly became

Speaker 7: herring at town at mouth of a lake, a bear

Speaker 7: came to the place where they were fishing. The bear
• 2:24:15
Speaker 7: reached down through the smokehole and stole the herring they
• 2:24:18
Speaker 7: were drying. Then people said, who is this thief that
• 2:24:21
Speaker 7: is stealing our fish? Because they said that the grizzly
• 2:24:24
Speaker 7: bear killed all of them. Then the Kagwantin seized their
• 2:24:28
Speaker 7: spears and set out to kill the bears nearby. When
• 2:24:31
Speaker 7: they found them, the bears were lying in holes they

Speaker 7: had dug out for themselves. The people said to them,

Speaker 7: come out here, we will fight it out. So the

• 2:25:20
Speaker 7: Sitko when it became very foggy. They could not even
• 2:25:23
Speaker 7: see the water around their canoe. Then in the thick

Speaker 7: fog they heard singing. The song was we picked up

Speaker 7: a man. We picked up a man. You picked up
• 2:25:32
Speaker 7: a man. They captured a man. They captured a man.
• 2:25:36
Speaker 7: You've captured a man. The voice was so strong they
• 2:25:40
Speaker 7: could hear it echo among the mountains. As the fog rose,
• 2:25:43
Speaker 7: the song came nearer and nearer. At last they saw
• 2:25:46
Speaker 7: the voice came from a wee little frog. The man said,
• 2:25:49
Speaker 7: this frog is mine. I shall claim it. His wife said, no,
• 2:25:53
Speaker 7: it is mine, I shall claim it. Thus they argued.
• 2:25:57
Speaker 7: At last the man let his wife take the frog.
• 2:25:59
Speaker 7: The woman took it ashore, treating it just like a child.
• 2:26:02
Speaker 7: She took it up into the woods, put it down

Speaker 7: Beaver Crest a cling Itt story. A young beaver was
• 2:26:41
Speaker 7: captured long ago by a family of the Dessetan. It
• 2:26:44
Speaker 7: was well carved for but it became angry and began
• 2:26:47
Speaker 7: to make songs. Afterwards, the beaver's master went through the
• 2:26:50
Speaker 7: woods to a creek and found there were two salmon
• 2:26:52
Speaker 7: spear handles, beautifully carved. They were at the foot of
• 2:26:56
Speaker 7: a big tree. He took them home, and when the
• 2:26:58
Speaker 7: beaver saw them, he said, that is my work. After
• 2:27:01
Speaker 7: a while, something offended the beaver again. He began to sing,
• 2:27:05
Speaker 7: just like a human being. Then he seized a spear
• 2:27:08
Speaker 7: and threw it through his master's chest, so his master
• 2:27:10
Speaker 7: was killed. The beaver thumped its tail on the ground
• 2:27:14
Speaker 7: and the house fell into the ground. The beaver had
• 2:27:16
Speaker 7: dug a great hollow under the house. It is from

Speaker 7: this story that the Dessetone clan claimed the beaver as
• 2:27:21
Speaker 7: their totem and have the beaver crest. They also have

Speaker 5: Barry Judson, Chapter sixty. Origin of the killer whale crest
• 2:27:56
Speaker 5: cling it. A long time ago there was a man
• 2:27:59
Speaker 5: named Zazien, who always quarreled with his wife. One day,
• 2:28:03
Speaker 5: his brothers in law took him to an island far
• 2:28:05
Speaker 5: out at sea and left him there. Natsien began to think,
• 2:28:10
Speaker 5: what can I do? As he sat there thinking, he
• 2:28:12
Speaker 5: whittled two killer whales out of cottonwood bark. He put
• 2:28:16
Speaker 5: them into the water and shouted as the shamans do.
• 2:28:19
Speaker 5: They looked as if they were swimming, but when they
• 2:28:21
Speaker 5: came to the surface, they were only cottonwood bark. Natsien
• 2:28:25
Speaker 5: made two more whales out of alder. He tried to
• 2:28:28
Speaker 5: put the spirit of his clan into them. As he
• 2:28:30
Speaker 5: put them in the water, he whistled four times like
• 2:28:32
  Speaker 5: a spirit.
• 2:28:34
Speaker 7: Hoo hoo, hoo hoo.
• 2:28:37
Speaker 5: When they floated to the surface, they were only alderwood.
• 2:28:40
Speaker 5: Then he tried hemlock, then red cedar. Afterwood, he tried
• 2:28:44
Speaker 5: yellow cedar. These whales swam right away like large killer whales.
• 2:28:49
Speaker 5: They swam out a long distance. When they came back,
• 2:28:52
Speaker 5: they turned into wood. The Nasien made holes in their
• 2:28:56
Speaker 5: dorsal fins, seized one of them with each hand and
• 2:28:59
Speaker 5: let the killer whale tow him out to sea. He
• 2:29:02
Speaker 5: said to them, if you see my brothers in law
• 2:29:04
Speaker 5: and canoes, you are to upset them. After the whales
• 2:29:08
Speaker 5: had towed Nasien to see for some distance, they returned
• 2:29:11
Speaker 5: to the island. They became wood again. The next time
• 2:29:15
Speaker 5: Nazien saw his brothers in law in their canoes, he
• 2:29:18
Speaker 5: put the spirit of his clan into the killer whales.
• 2:29:21
Speaker 5: Then they overturned the canoes and broke them to bits.
• 2:29:24
Speaker 5: They killed the people in them. After that, Natzien said
• 2:29:27
Speaker 5: to his killer whales, you are not to injure people again.
• 2:29:31
Speaker 5: You must be kind to them. So these two killer
• 2:29:34
Speaker 5: whales became the canoes of the spirits. Shamans are lucky
• 2:29:37
Speaker 5: if they can get the spirit canoes. End of chapter sixty.

Speaker 7: Grass Plant an Esquimaux story from the Bearing Straits. Near
• 2:30:08
Speaker 7: the village of Pastolic, at the mouth of the Yukon,
• 2:30:10
Speaker 7: grows a tall, slender grass which the women weave into
• 2:30:13
Speaker 7: baskets and mats. A grass stalk, which had almost been
• 2:30:16
Speaker 7: pulled up by the women became much frightened. He wished
• 2:30:19
Speaker 7: he were something else. Close to him was a bunch
• 2:30:22
Speaker 7: of herbs living peacefully and quietly. Grass said, I wish
• 2:30:26
Speaker 7: I were an herb. At once it became an herb
• 2:30:28
Speaker 7: and lived peacefully. One day the women came back with
• 2:30:32
Speaker 7: sharp pointed picks made from the antlers of the reindeer.
• 2:30:35
Speaker 7: They began to dig up the herbs and to eat
• 2:30:37
Speaker 7: some of the roots. Again, Grass was frightened. He saw
• 2:30:41
Speaker 7: a small creeping plant nearby, very small and obscure. Grass said,
• 2:30:45
Speaker 7: I wish I were a creeping plant. At once, he
• 2:30:48
Speaker 7: became a small creeping plant. The women came back again
• 2:30:51
Speaker 7: and tore up much of the small creeping plant. Grass
• 2:30:54
Speaker 7: became much worried. He said, I wish I were that
• 2:30:57
Speaker 7: small tuber plant there. At once he became a plant
• 2:31:00
Speaker 7: having a tuberous root. Soon, a small tunder mouse came
• 2:31:04
Speaker 7: creeping through the grass and began nibbling at one of
• 2:31:06
Speaker 7: the tubers near by. Grass thought, I will not be
• 2:31:09
Speaker 7: safe until I become a mouse. At once Grass became mouse.
• 2:31:14
Speaker 7: He felt quite free as mouse, and ran around over
• 2:31:16
Speaker 7: the tundra and nibbling at roots. Sometimes he would sit
• 2:31:19
Speaker 7: up on his hind legs and look about him. While
• 2:31:22
Speaker 7: traveling along, mouse saw a great white thing coming toward him.
• 2:31:26
Speaker 7: Sometimes it dropped to the ground, and after eating something
• 2:31:28
Speaker 7: would fly on. As it came near. Mouse saw it
• 2:31:31
Speaker 7: was a great white owl. Owl saw a mouse and
• 2:31:34
Speaker 7: darted down upon it. But mouse slipped into a hole
• 2:31:36
Speaker 7: near by, and owl flew away. Mouse was very badly
• 2:31:40
Speaker 7: frightened by this. When he came out of his hole,
• 2:31:42
Speaker 7: he said, I will be owl. Then I will be safe.
• 2:31:45
Speaker 7: At once he became a beautiful white owl with slow,
• 2:31:49
Speaker 7: noiseless wing. He flew toward the north, stopping now and
• 2:31:51
Speaker 7: then to catch and eat a mouse. After a long flight,
• 2:31:54
Speaker 7: he came in sight of Sledge Island. Al thought he
• 2:31:57
Speaker 7: would go there. When far out at sea, he became
• 2:32:00
Speaker 7: very tired. He could hardly reach the shore. As he
• 2:32:04
Speaker 7: rested on a piece of driftwood on the sand. Two
• 2:32:06
Speaker 7: men passed along the shore. Al thought for a while,
• 2:32:10
Speaker 7: Then he said, I will be a man at once.
• 2:32:13
Speaker 7: He became a fine looking young man, but he had
• 2:32:15
Speaker 7: no clothing. Night came on and the air became cool.
• 2:32:19
Speaker 7: Man sat down with his back against the piece of
• 2:32:21
Speaker 7: drift wood and slept there until morning. When the sun arose.
• 2:32:24
Speaker 7: He awakened. He felt lame and stiff from the cold
• 2:32:27
Speaker 7: night air. Looking about him, Man found some grass which
• 2:32:32
Speaker 7: he wove into a loose robe, which helps to keep
• 2:32:34
Speaker 7: out the cold. Suddenly he saw a reindeer near him.
• 2:32:38
Speaker 7: He crept on hands and knees close to one, seized
• 2:32:40
Speaker 7: it by the horns and broke its neck With a
• 2:32:42
Speaker 7: single effort. He carried the reindeer on his back to
• 2:32:45
Speaker 7: a sleeping place. He felt all over the reindeer's body,
• 2:32:48
Speaker 7: but his skin was too thick for his fingers to
• 2:32:50
Speaker 7: break an opening. For a long time, he thought. Then
• 2:32:53
Speaker 7: he saw near him a sharp edged stone. He picked
• 2:32:56
Speaker 7: it up and found he could cut the skin with it.
• 2:32:58
Speaker 7: So man skinned the deer, but he had no fire
• 2:33:01
Speaker 7: with which to cook it. Looking around, he saw two
• 2:33:04
Speaker 7: round white stones upon the beach. Striking them together, he
• 2:33:07
Speaker 7: saw they gave out sparks. He then found some dry
• 2:33:10
Speaker 7: wood and scraped off bits. With the wood and stones,
• 2:33:13
Speaker 7: he made a fire and roasted some of the meat.
• 2:33:16
Speaker 7: Man tried to swallow a large piece of meat, as
• 2:33:18
Speaker 7: he had done when he was out, but he could
• 2:33:20
Speaker 7: not do it. He had to cut it with the
• 2:33:22
Speaker 7: sharp edged stone into smaller pieces. The next day he
• 2:33:26
Speaker 7: killed another reindeer and skinned it, and the next day
• 2:33:28
Speaker 7: another Then the knights became so cold he wrapped the
• 2:33:31
Speaker 7: skins upon him. When they dried, they became as part
• 2:33:34
Speaker 7: of his body. But the knights became still colder, and
• 2:33:37
Speaker 7: the days were colder. Then Chinelok the man found some
• 2:33:41
Speaker 7: drift wood and made a rough hut. After finishing his hut,
• 2:33:45
Speaker 7: Chiniluk was walking over the hills one day when he
• 2:33:47
Speaker 7: met a strange black beast among the blueberry bushes. Chiniluk
• 2:33:51
Speaker 7: did not know what to do, but at last he
• 2:33:53
Speaker 7: caught it by the hind legs. The black thing turned
• 2:33:55
Speaker 7: around with a growl and showed his white teeth. Chiniluc
• 2:33:58
Speaker 7: quickly caught the bear by the heavy hair and threw
• 2:34:01
Speaker 7: it to the ground so it lay quiet. Then he
• 2:34:03
Speaker 7: killed it. Then he threw it across his shoulders and
• 2:34:06
Speaker 7: went home. Then he skinned it. When Chinaluk skinned the bear,
• 2:34:10
Speaker 7: he found it had much fat. He thought it might burn.
• 2:34:13
Speaker 7: His hut was very dark, so he went along the
• 2:34:16
Speaker 7: beach until he found a flat stone with a small
• 2:34:18
Speaker 7: hollow in it. He put the oil from the fat
• 2:34:21
Speaker 7: in this. Then he put in a bit of dry
• 2:34:23
Speaker 7: moss and set the end of the moss on fire.
• 2:34:25
Speaker 7: Then his hut was lighted very well. Chona Look also
• 2:34:29
Speaker 7: hung the bear skin in the opening of the door
• 2:34:31
Speaker 7: to keep out the cold. So he lived many days,
• 2:34:33
Speaker 7: But at last china Look became lonely. Then he remembered
• 2:34:36
Speaker 7: the two men who had passed him when he was owl.
• 2:34:39
Speaker 7: He went in search of people. At last he found
• 2:34:42
Speaker 7: two new kayaks at the foot of a hill with spears, lions, floats,
• 2:34:46
Speaker 7: and other hunting implements. Then he saw a path nearby.
• 2:34:50
Speaker 7: On the top was a house. On the ground around
• 2:34:53
Speaker 7: were several dead white whales. Chono look crept cautiously into
• 2:34:56
Speaker 7: the entranceway and up to the door. He lifted the
• 2:34:59
Speaker 7: corner of skin and saw a young man working on
• 2:35:01
Speaker 7: some arrows. He stepped in very quietly. The young man
• 2:35:05
Speaker 7: raised a bow and arrow to shoot, but Chonnluk said,
• 2:35:08
Speaker 7: I have come, brother. The young man said, gladly, are
• 2:35:11
Speaker 7: you my brother? Come and sit beside me. At first

Speaker 7: the young man was very glad. He taught Chonnoluk all things.
• 2:35:18
Speaker 7: Then at last he became jealous of him. Then Chonnoluk
• 2:35:21
Speaker 7: became scornful. He said, one day, you cannot kill anything
• 2:35:25
Speaker 7: without a bow and arrow. I can kill with my
• 2:35:27
Speaker 7: hands alone. Then the brother became still more angry. One day,
• 2:35:31
Speaker 7: both round on the water and their kayaks. The young
• 2:35:34
Speaker 7: man said, now let us see who can gain the
• 2:35:36
Speaker 7: shore first. They both reached the beach at the same time.
• 2:35:40
Speaker 7: Then the young man said, you are no Mormer brother.
• 2:35:43
Speaker 7: You go in that direction and I will go in this.
• 2:35:45
Speaker 7: So they parted angrily. As they went Chon'louk turned into
• 2:35:49
Speaker 7: wolverine and his brother became gray wolf. So this day
• 2:35:52
Speaker 7: they wander in the same country, but never together. End

Speaker 7: The Wind People a Koreak story from Siberia. It was
• 2:36:24
Speaker 7: at a time when the Creator lived. Once a violent
• 2:36:27
Speaker 7: snowstorm broke out and it blew incessantly. Creator got ready
• 2:36:31
Speaker 7: to go to Windman's village to find out why the
• 2:36:33
Speaker 7: storm raged so constantly. He took a skin boat instead
• 2:36:37
Speaker 7: of a sledge. He hitched it to mice instead of reindeer.
• 2:36:40
Speaker 7: Then he started. He came to the village of the
• 2:36:43
Speaker 7: wind People. All the people surrounded him and laughed at
• 2:36:45
Speaker 7: his sledge and reindeer. How will you carry off our
• 2:36:49
Speaker 7: presents on such reindeer, they asked. Creators said, just put
• 2:36:52
Speaker 7: them into the boat, and never mind how I carry
• 2:36:54
Speaker 7: them off. The wind people took out all the food
• 2:36:57
Speaker 7: and clothes they had and loaded the skin boat heaping full.
• 2:37:00
Speaker 7: Creator drove back his mice, which dragged the loaded skin
• 2:37:03
Speaker 7: boat home. Then he returned to the village of the
• 2:37:05
Speaker 7: wind people. They loaded his skin boat again and he
• 2:37:08
Speaker 7: carried off everything they had. Then Creator's mice gnawed the
• 2:37:11
Speaker 7: straps off all the sledges and harness of the wind people.
• 2:37:15
Speaker 7: Thus the wind people could not drive any more. Un

Speaker 7: LibriVox dot org. Tricks of the Fox a Koreak story
• 2:37:44
Speaker 7: from Siberia. One day Fox said to his children, I
• 2:37:49
Speaker 7: AM going to get some eggs. He went to the
• 2:37:51
Speaker 7: woods and saw eagle's nest high up in a tree.
• 2:37:54
Speaker 7: He put some grass stalks into his ears, knocked with
• 2:37:57
Speaker 7: them on the tree, and said to eagle, throw me
• 2:37:59
Speaker 7: down an egg. If you don't, I will knock the
• 2:38:01
Speaker 7: tree over with these stalks and break it. Eagle became
• 2:38:04
Speaker 7: frightened and threw down an egg. Throw down another, said eagle.
• 2:38:08
Speaker 7: That's enough, said eagle. I will not throw down any more.
• 2:38:12
Speaker 7: Fox said, throw it down. If I knock down the tree,
• 2:38:14
Speaker 7: I'll take them all. Eagle was frightened and threw down
• 2:38:17
Speaker 7: another egg. Then Fox laughed and said, I fooled you nicely.
• 2:38:21
Speaker 7: How could I have knocked down a whole tree with
• 2:38:23
Speaker 7: these small grass stalks. Eagle became angry. He threw himself
• 2:38:27
Speaker 7: upon Fox grasped him with his talons, lifted him high
• 2:38:31
Speaker 7: into the air, flew out far to sea, and threw
• 2:38:33
Speaker 7: him down upon a lonely island. Fox remained on that island.
• 2:38:37
Speaker 7: He lived there and thought to himself, Am I really
• 2:38:39
Speaker 7: going to die on this island? Fox began to sing
• 2:38:43
Speaker 7: shamans songs. Seals, walrus and whales appeared near the island.
• 2:38:47
Speaker 7: What are you singing about, they asked fox. This is
• 2:38:49
Speaker 7: what I am singing about, said fox. Are there more
• 2:38:52
Speaker 7: animals in the waters of the sea or on the
• 2:38:54
Speaker 7: dry land? Certainly there are more in the waters of
• 2:38:57
Speaker 7: the sea. So the sea people replied, well, let us see,
• 2:39:00
Speaker 7: said fox, come up to the surface of the water
• 2:39:03
Speaker 7: and form a raft from this island to the land.
• 2:39:05
Speaker 7: Then I will take a walk over you and count you.
• 2:39:07
Speaker 7: All the sea people all came up to the surface
• 2:39:10
Speaker 7: of the water and formed a raft. Fox ran over
• 2:39:13
Speaker 7: their backs, pretending to count them. But as soon as
• 2:39:15
Speaker 7: he reached land, he jumped ashore and went home. That's
