Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now UK, you're correspondent a quarter to six as Mike Pierce, Mike,
- 0:02Speaker 1: welcome to the show you've got And another day, another
- 0:05Speaker 1: Starmer update, and he's saying I'm here to stay.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yeah, a good morning. He says he will fight on.
- 0:11Speaker 2: He told a meeting of his own MPs he was
- 0:13Speaker 2: not prepared to stand down now. Speaking publicly a short
- 0:16Speaker 2: time ago, he said, and this was for the first
- 0:18Speaker 2: time since his row broke. He will never walk away
- 0:21Speaker 2: from his mandate he was given to change the country.
- 0:24Speaker 2: But some of his own party are still demanding he goes.
- 0:27Speaker 2: His press secretary in chief of staff have resigned. The
- 0:30Speaker 2: leader of the Labor Party in Scotland says he should
- 0:32Speaker 2: stand down. It was also revealed his former deputy Prime Minister,
- 0:36Speaker 2: Angela Rayner has prepared a website as part of potential
- 0:40Speaker 2: leadership challenge. Starmer has now won the backing though of
- 0:43Speaker 2: his senior minister, so I think he's safe immediately, but
- 0:46Speaker 2: we'll just have to wait and see public support me.
- 0:48Speaker 2: While for the Labour Party, he leads is just sixteen
- 0:51Speaker 2: percent according to a new poll, that's below all the
- 0:54Speaker 2: other major parties. The how of course, is that Starmer
- 0:57Speaker 2: gave Lord Manderson the top job of UK andmbass in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the United States. That was in spite of knowing he
- 1:02Speaker 2: had a relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Now, meanwhile, the King
- 1:06Speaker 2: has expressed his profound concern over allegations about the former
- 1:09Speaker 2: Prince Andrew. Buckingham Palace said the King will stand ready
- 1:13Speaker 2: to support the police over any claims that are made.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Police are investigating allegations Andrew passed on top secret government
- 1:20Speaker 2: information to Epstein. So this whole route continues, continues, continues.
- 1:25Speaker 1: What about the King of the North, Andy Burnham, As
- 1:27Speaker 1: he's backing Stamer, isn't he just stay in.
- 1:30Speaker 2: The Yeah, he's of course. You will remember he's been
- 1:34Speaker 2: blocked from standing in a crucial by election we have
- 1:37Speaker 2: here in two weeks time. I think, you know, senior
- 1:41Speaker 2: leaders in the party are coming to Starmer's aid for
- 1:44Speaker 2: the moment, but I think the real issue they face
- 1:46Speaker 2: is this that election is in two weeks time. All
- 1:49Speaker 2: the polls are saying they potentially will come last. There
- 1:52Speaker 2: is very little public support according to the polls for
- 1:55Speaker 2: Labour at the moment, and if that happens, I think
- 1:57Speaker 2: that's the next really danger point for Starmer. People don't
- 2:01Speaker 2: vote for the party. What happens then? Will there be
- 2:03Speaker 2: new calls for him to stand down? And then we
- 2:05Speaker 2: could perhaps see a leadership challenge.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Gotcha? Now the middles controversy at the Olympics that's going on.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well this is an interesting one, okay. So now
- 2:15Speaker 2: organizers have been forced to apologize to some athletes after,
- 2:18Speaker 2: believe it or not, their medals broke. The issue seems
- 2:21Speaker 2: to be the ribven they put around their neck is
- 2:23Speaker 2: coming away from the actual medal. So the fixing that
- 2:26Speaker 2: holds it all together, it seems, well, just isn't fixing.
- 2:29Speaker 2: A number of willers have had problems and complained. The
- 2:31Speaker 2: issue came to light at a press conference where athletes
- 2:34Speaker 2: held up their medals that were broken. An investigation is
- 2:37Speaker 2: underway to find out what's gone wrong. Now organizers say
- 2:40Speaker 2: it's the last thing they want. They say everything must
- 2:43Speaker 2: and will be perfect in the end, So an investigation there,
- 2:45Speaker 2: but some very very unhappy athletes.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Sounds like it too, and rightly so too, Mike, Thank
- 2:51Speaker 1: you for that, Mike Pierce, UK europe correspondent.
