Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Neil was charismatic and wit Tea, just a nice normal man.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Cudgels Ralph. That was the ruse. There's something very strange
- 0:12Speaker 2: about this baby. You can keep the baby great for you,
- 0:15Speaker 2: but it ain't mind Darnie. Seriously, seriously, he is a vine.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I've spoken to probably two hundred people who Neil traumatized.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Everything he told me was a lie.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I've never seen anything as extreme as this.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Someone who really needs to stop him.
- 0:31Speaker 4: For years, this story lived in whispers until it crossed
- 0:34Speaker 4: the Atlantic and found an audience on the hit podcast Betrayal.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I'm Andrea Gunning and this is Betrayal, a show about
- 0:41Speaker 3: the people we trust the most and the deceptions that
- 0:45Speaker 3: change everything.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Gunning is now sharing these stories on the ABC true
- 0:49Speaker 4: crime docu series Betrayal, Secrets and Lies.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Today, I'm talking with Tina Maya.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Tina's story begins after she moves home to London for
- 0:58Speaker 4: a new job, leaving New York, where she'd been married,
- 1:01Speaker 4: divorced and had a baby.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So it was very early twenty sixteen. I was at
- 1:08Speaker 1: one of these conferences in London. That's where I stumbled
- 1:12Speaker 1: across Neil Lawman.
- 1:14Speaker 3: He's a successful businessman, and he even has an interesting hobby.
- 1:17Speaker 3: He loves cooking and appears in YouTube videos.
- 1:20Speaker 2: If you cooked that it's not actually come around for
- 1:22Speaker 2: dinner and let you cook from me. Would you spoon
- 1:25Speaker 2: me afterwards?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Why not?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Tina had no desire for a relationship, but after the conference,
- 1:31Speaker 3: Neil texted her out of the blow.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And Neil seems like he might be good fun for
- 1:35Speaker 1: a drink, okay, And he said that he was divorced
- 1:40Speaker 1: also and they lived together in the States too, and
- 1:43Speaker 1: that his ex wife had gotten quite bitter about the
- 1:47Speaker 1: fact that he couldn't give her children. He's an iPad
- 1:50Speaker 1: testicular cancer and completely infertile. I felt like he was
- 1:55Speaker 1: being quite vulnerable and genuine actually drew me to him.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Tina starts seeing Neil more often. She still has no
- 2:05Speaker 3: desire for a relationship, but she's having fun with him,
- 2:08Speaker 3: and she's enjoying the sex.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That was part of what it was and part of
- 2:15Speaker 1: what was fun. Even though he told me he was infertile,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I was still worried because having another child was not
- 2:22Speaker 1: in my plan. He's like, no, like I have zero's
- 2:26Speaker 1: book count. But he had sort of dropped into conversation
- 2:31Speaker 1: about having a lot of allergies in One of those
- 2:34Speaker 1: allergies was vacex, so he couldn't use protection.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Tina started noticing things about Neil that were off putting.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I heard him have a phone conversation with his mother
- 2:45Speaker 1: and he was being so awful to her. And then
- 2:48Speaker 1: there was the lyings he was clearly lying about his education.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So it was these little things.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Just as Tina's hoping that this relationship with Neil feeds away,
- 3:01Speaker 3: she starts to experience this familiar but concerning brain fog.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And then my period was late, so I've got a
- 3:11Speaker 1: pregnancy test. Immediately popped up pregnant. I was like, well, no,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I can't be pregnant. Bought a few more that didn't work.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I thought, Neil doesn't know he can have children.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Tina decides to keep the baby and reaches out to Neil.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And then he really got quite venomous.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I cannot produce children if you are pregnant. How you
- 3:41Speaker 2: deal with it, it's not my problem. I have zero span.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Don't sit there putting things on me that this could
- 3:49Speaker 2: be mine because it isn't medically impossible.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It got really weird, so I just said, you're more
- 3:58Speaker 1: than welcome to take a DNA to where the baby's born.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Neil refuses to do the DNA task, but Tina didn't
- 4:04Speaker 3: need it. She knew he was the father. She hadn't
- 4:06Speaker 3: been with anybody else. She just couldn't understand why he
- 4:10Speaker 3: was adamantly denying it. But she moved on without Noil,
- 4:13Speaker 3: and in January of twenty seventeen, Tina welcomed her baby, girl, Josephine,
- 4:17Speaker 3: and she calls her a feefee.
- 4:18Speaker 1: When my daughter was born, she had really serious jaundice.
- 4:23Speaker 1: The light treatment wasn't working, and they said them, we're
- 4:27Speaker 1: going to need blood types of the parents, any medical history.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Tina was afraid for her baby's life. She hadn't spoken
- 4:34Speaker 3: to Neil in mines, but she had kept in touch
- 4:37Speaker 3: with one of his friends, and she reached out to him.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I suddenly get these long, nasty texts, how dare I
- 4:46Speaker 1: contact his friend and that he would not be giving
- 4:49Speaker 1: any medical history. Luckily, the next level of lights did work.
- 4:54Speaker 1: After a week in hospital, we were able to go home.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Tina and the baby are settling in nicely at home,
- 5:01Speaker 3: but she can't let go of how Neil conducted himself,
- 5:04Speaker 3: So she decides to take action against him.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I thought, I'm going to set the Child Maintenance Service
- 5:08Speaker 1: onto you for the next eighteen years, not because I
- 5:11Speaker 1: want the money, but because you deserve it, because you're
- 5:14Speaker 1: not a nice person.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Tina submitted an application to the Child Maintenance Service, which
- 5:18Speaker 3: is the UK's agency for child support.
- 5:21Speaker 1: When the report came through, it said that he had
- 5:25Speaker 1: been assessed five pounds a week because he was a
- 5:28Speaker 1: benefits recipient. But then the next really alarming thing was
- 5:33Speaker 1: that that five pounds a week was split between four children.
- 5:40Speaker 1: The first thing I did was go to Facebook and
- 5:43Speaker 1: I look up Nil's last name Lorman. Straight Away upcomes
- 5:48Speaker 1: a profile. I thought, well, this must be his ex wife,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and on the profile was a picture of two young
- 5:57Speaker 1: girls and they looked like Fifi. I thought, did I
- 6:02Speaker 1: write to her? So I did and said I've just
- 6:05Speaker 1: had a baby and the father is Neil Norman. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: quite quickly she got back to me. The first line
- 6:13Speaker 1: was just I am so sorry that you have also
- 6:16Speaker 1: been his victim. I'm like, oh.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Neil's ex wife tells Tina that they've never lived in
- 6:24Speaker 3: the United States. He's definitely the father of her two
- 6:28Speaker 3: kids and he has never once mentioned having cancer.
- 6:31Speaker 1: At this point, I realized that he had impregnated me maliciously.
- 6:37Speaker 1: He knew what he was doing. There is absolutely justice
- 6:40Speaker 1: that needs to be served against Neil. I didn't consent
- 6:43Speaker 1: to be with a fertile man.
- 6:49Speaker 4: To find out what happens, watch the series Betrayal, Secrets
- 6:52Speaker 4: and Lies, premiering right here on ABC this Sunday, and
- 6:55Speaker 4: then available on Hulu and Disney Plus
