- 0:01Speaker 1: We now turn to the Springfield Sun to bringing news
- 0:04from in and around Washington County. Your reader today is
- 0:08Amy Jones, Timmany. We began with the edition dated Wednesday,
- 0:12February twenty sixth, twenty twenty five. As a reminder, RADIOI
- 0:17is a reading service intended for people who are blind
- 0:20or have other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:24printed material. Parent expresses inequity concerns the school Board by
- 0:30Jane Reid Kline, February twenty sixth, twenty twenty five. The
- 0:35parent of a Washington County High school student address the
- 0:38Board of Education on Monday, February seventeenth with concerns he
- 0:42has about quote a lack of equity in the educational
- 0:46opportunities offered by your school system and of quote Shaan
- 0:50Maddingly said, his concerns arose when his daughter expressed her
- 0:54unease about what she perceived as inequities in the programs
- 0:58provided by the district. Quote. I began investigating these issues
- 1:03and have uncovered several troubling matters that I feel the
- 1:06school board and our community need to be aware of.
- 1:09End of quote. Mattingly said his concerns arived from a
- 1:14single student receiving one on one instruction in a Calculus
- 1:18maat one thirty two class offered through Kentucky State University. Quote.
- 1:24The class was not in the twenty twenty four to
- 1:26twenty five school curriculum and was created specifically for one student.
- 1:30Mattingly said no other Washington County student was offered the
- 1:34same opportunity. End of quote. Mattingly said the class ran
- 1:39from October fourteenth through December sixteenth. He said he was
- 1:42informed by the high school site based decision making team
- 1:45the hiring of an adjunct teacher was a school board
- 1:49decision and was reflected in the menace of the November
- 1:52board meeting. Washington County Superintendent Doctor Robin Cochrane explained after
- 1:57the meeting that quote, the Board of Vegetation doesn't hire
- 2:01employees and it doesn't approve the hiring of employees. The
- 2:05November agenda item referenced is the superintendent's monthly personnel report.
- 2:10To the end of quote, she explained all personnel actions
- 2:14are taken by the superintendent and reported to the board
- 2:17at the next meeting. Maddingly content quote, the class was
- 2:22created and tailored specifically for one student, and it was
- 2:25taught during school hours at the teacher's personal home. End
- 2:29of quote. Cochrane says, otherwise, quote, the Board of Education
- 2:34first approved the adjunct teacher position and added it to
- 2:36the salary schedule in July twenty eleven. End of quote.
- 2:41She went on to say, quote, this process is utilized
- 2:44nearly every year to ensure unique student needs can be
- 2:47met for courses which cannot be taught by existing Washington
- 2:51County School's employees, or where a course cannot be added
- 2:54to the masters schedule because too few students need or
- 2:58qualify to take a dual credit course due to the
- 3:01post secondary institution's court prerequisites. End of quote. Quote, the
- 3:06course opportunity was created at the prompting of an individual
- 3:10student because of that student's college and career goals. End
- 3:13of quote. Cochrane sept quote, and this is exactly what
- 3:17has happened in the past and will continue to happen
- 3:19in the future when student needs prompt the design end
- 3:23of quote. Mattingly said after he requested WCHS Principal Charlie
- 3:29Cox and attended a special called site based meeting to
- 3:33address dual credit courses, he received a call offering additional
- 3:37classes that had not been available before. Quote the sudden offer,
- 3:41which included a tutor, gave the impression that the district
- 3:45was trying to cover up the inequities in its programming
- 3:48that favored one student, and silence my concerns. End of quote,
- 3:52Mattingly said, after noting the student receiving the one on
- 3:56one instruction is the superintendent son. He added, quote extra
- 4:00support or special opportunities for students in public schools should
- 4:05never be based on personal relationships or who you know.
- 4:08Public schools are required to provide fair and equitable access
- 4:12to all students. End of quote. Quote the creation of
- 4:16a special class for one student and the hiring of
- 4:19an adjunct teacher for that one student alone falls far
- 4:23short of ensuring fairness and educational opportunities for all students
- 4:27in Washington County schools. End of quote. He added, maddingly
- 4:32asked why no other student was made aware of the
- 4:34opportunity to receive one on one instruction or join this class. Quote.
- 4:39While students weren't directly contacted in the fall, an inquiry
- 4:43was made administratively whether any other students had previously requested
- 4:47the class, Doctor Cochrane said, and no other students were identified.
- 4:52Who would be interested or needed the course, as well
- 4:55as be eligible to take the course based on KSU's
- 4:59requirements end of quote. Cochrane added that when Mattingly's concern
- 5:03was brought to light a few months ago, quote, fearful
- 5:07the district had unintentionally excluded students who might have liked
- 5:10to take the calculus course. The opportunity has been extended
- 5:14again this semester and continues to be an option. No
- 5:17student has chosen to enroll. End of quote. Cochrane went
- 5:21on to detail numerous times courses have been provided through
- 5:24post secondary partners for individual students or small groups of students.
- 5:30Quote the student name during the board meeting is just
- 5:33another and a long list of students who have benefited
- 5:35from the flexibility created by the board by adopting the
- 5:39adjunct instructor position more than a decade ago. He shouldn't
- 5:43be deprived of that opportunity solely because his mother is superintendent.
- 5:46She said, nothing special was done for him, which hasn't
- 5:50been done for dozens of other students over the last decade,
- 5:53And nothing special was done for him which hasn't been
- 5:55offered to additional students during the current semester. And which
- 6:00be offered to other students next year and beyond end
- 6:03of quote. Another parent addressed the board with concerns about
- 6:07the prom being held at Cornerstone Acres on rud Lane.
- 6:11He said he was concerned for the safety of students
- 6:13driving one lane winding country roads to and from festivities.
- 6:19Also at the board meeting, doctor Cochrane reported to board
- 6:23members that the district has utilized all ten of the
- 6:26NTI days allotted for the year. She said a school
- 6:29must be closed for any reason going forward, the school
- 6:32year will have to be extended beyond the schedule closing
- 6:36day of May twenty first, or miss extra or the
- 6:39extra minutes would have to be added to each school
- 6:42day to make up the this time, the board delayed
- 6:45on the setting of a day for graduation until the
- 6:48March meeting so they would know when the last day
- 6:51of school will be. Cochrane also reported the district was
- 6:54working to repair water weeks at North Washington School near
- 6:58the old band room I'm sorry, and near the old
- 7:01band room at Washington County Elementary. She is hoping to
- 7:06put the plans for the next days of the WCS
- 7:08Athletic Complex out to bid soon Coffin said it is
- 7:12expected for the costs to construct the new baseball and
- 7:15softball fields, tennis courts, and additional parking to be about
- 7:19six million dollars. Rescue squad space, multiple water rescues by
- 7:30Jane big Kline, February twenty six, twenty twenty five stories
- 7:35of flooding and water rescues were well. Flooding into the
- 7:38Springfield Sun last Sunday, February sixteenth, just as we were
- 7:42finalizing the paper for press, we briefly reported a fatal
- 7:46accident on Tit Creek Road where a seventy nine year
- 7:49old woman's car was swept off the road and into
- 7:52the creek by floodwaters on Saturday evening. Washington County Rescue
- 7:57and the Lebanon Marion County Swift Water Rescue The team
- 8:00responded but were unable to save her. A similar incident
- 8:05in Nelson County also led to a fatality. A van
- 8:08in the Cavalry area of Marion County was also swept
- 8:12off the road by floodwaters. The driver of the van
- 8:15was able to exit the vehicle and get to land.
- 8:18Also on Sunday morning, just as the Sun was being
- 8:21sent to press, first responders were dispatched the Campground Lane
- 8:25and Bloomfield Road. Three adults and one child were stranded
- 8:29in that area. Washington County Rescue responded as well as
- 8:32a Lebanon swift Water Rescue. All four people were safely
- 8:37returned to dry Land. Rescue Squad Commander Joe Carpenter continues
- 8:42to encourage everyone to be extra careful when floodwaters approached
- 8:46the roadways. Quote turn around, don't drown. US Bank closing
- 8:52Loretto branch People's Bank Expands by Doug Thomas, Special to
- 8:57the Sun February twenty sixth, twenty twenty five. US Bank,
- 9:01one of the largest commercial banks in the country, announced
- 9:04recently that it will be closing its Loretto branch effective
- 9:08April twenty fourth. Residents in the western part of the
- 9:11county will not be without a local banking partner for law.
- 9:15People's Bank President Bobby Miles assured Loretto residents that his
- 9:19bank plans on providing services immediately upon the closure of
- 9:23the branch. People's Bank will be operating a full service
- 9:27branch beginning in April, but will temporarily be utilizing a
- 9:31makeshift facility near the Splash and Dash car wash in Loretto.
- 9:36Current US Bank customers will continue to have services available
- 9:39through online banking and at the leven In office on
- 9:42Main Street. The original Bank of Loretto was chartered as
- 9:46a community bank in nineteen twenty two, but has undergone
- 9:50a MYRIADUS changes since its opening day. In nineteen eighty three,
- 9:54the Bank of Loretto was renamed as part of the
- 9:57Marian National Bank, but four years later with changed to
- 10:00Kentucky National Bank of Marion County under Bill Sturgel. In
- 10:05nineteen ninety two, Cincinnati based Starbank purchased the bank and
- 10:10was later included in a rebranding as First Star in
- 10:13nineteen ninety nine. US Bank acquired the banking operations. In
- 10:17August of two thousand and one, at the height of
- 10:21bank mergers and increased interstate banking. The Loretto branch had
- 10:25only three employers. Longtime manager Crystal Smith is retiring, while
- 10:30one employee is transferring to the main office and the
- 10:33other is considering other options. The recent move comes as
- 10:37a change in strategy for many of the larger banks
- 10:39across the country. With the influx of online banking, inflation issues,
- 10:44and commercial real estate concerns, Many of these larger institutions
- 10:47are cutting costs by closing branches. The US Bank branch
- 10:51in Springfield closed just a few years ago. The pandemic
- 10:55increased the usage of digital banking and accelerated a trend
- 10:58toward fewer branches banks and the larger metropolitan areas. In
- 11:03just the last three months of twenty twenty, four, banks
- 11:06in the country closed over four hundred branches, including forty
- 11:10from US Bank. Some of the savings accrued from the
- 11:13branch closures have been used to expand in new technologies
- 11:17in the banking industry. Other savings have been used to
- 11:20offset huge expected losses in the commercial real estate businesses.
- 11:26The branch closings offer opportunities for smaller community banks like
- 11:30People's Bank to gain customers, many of whom are looking
- 11:33for more continuity and enhanced local lending. Senator Mitch McConnell
- 11:41won't seek reelection in twenty twenty six. Staff reports Republican
- 11:46Senator Mitch McConnell announced Thursday that he won't seek reelection
- 11:50next year, ending a forty three year long tenure of
- 11:54champion Conservative causes. McConnell, the largest longest serving Senate party
- 11:59leader in US history, made the announcement on his eighty
- 12:02third birthday. Quote. Seven times my fellow Kentuckians have sent
- 12:06me to the Senate, McConnell said, as aides lined in
- 12:09the back chamber and senators listened from seats every day
- 12:13in between. I've been humbled by the trust they've placed
- 12:16in me to do their business right here. Representing our
- 12:19Commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will
- 12:22not seek this honor in aids time. My current term
- 12:25in the Senate will be my last. End of quote.
- 12:28McConnell's announcement comes almost a year after his decision to
- 12:31step down from his leadership post after the November twenty
- 12:35twenty four election. McConnell's departure will set off a competitive
- 12:39GOP primary next year for what will now be an
- 12:42open Senate seat. Former State Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Republican,
- 12:47said he's in the race to succeed his one time mentor,
- 12:50having formerly worked as McConnell's legal counsel. Cameron lost the
- 12:56twenty twenty three governor's race to Democratic incumbent Andy Bisheer.
- 13:00Cameron said Thursday that his values aligned with Kentucky voters
- 13:04and touted his support for Trump. Another prominent Kentucky Republican
- 13:08considering the race quickly weighed in. US Representative Andy Barb
- 13:13said he would decide soon about his future. Also looming
- 13:17as a GOP candidate is businessman Nate Morris, the cheer,
- 13:21seen as a rising star in his party for winning
- 13:24statewide office in Republican Territory, has said he has no
- 13:28interest in the Senate seat. McConnell's retirement announcement marks the
- 13:32end of the story career, one in which he helped
- 13:34forge a conservative Supreme Court and steered the Senate through
- 13:38tax cuts, presidential impeachment trials in fierce political battles, yet
- 13:42was nearly two years remaining in his term. McConnell vowed
- 13:45to complete his work on several remaining fronts. Quote I
- 13:49have some unfinished business to attend to end of quote,
- 13:52he said. McConnell told senators that while there are a
- 13:55number of reasons for pessimism, the strength of the Senate
- 13:59is not one of them. Quote. The Senate is still
- 14:01equipped for the work of great consequence end of quote,
- 14:05he says. Senator Lindsay Graham said, quote he McConnell has
- 14:09a lot to be proud of and I'm sure he
- 14:11will work hard until the very end of his term
- 14:14end of quote. McConnell, who was first elected in nineteen
- 14:18eighty four, intends to serve until his term ends in
- 14:21January twenty twenty seven. The senator has dealt with a
- 14:24series of medical issues in recent years, including injuries sustained
- 14:28from falls and times when his face briefly frows while
- 14:31he was speaking. McConnell, over the years, went back and
- 14:34forth from majority to minority leader, depending on which party
- 14:38held power. He defended President George W. Bush's handling of
- 14:42the Iraq War and failed to block Obama's healthcare overhaul. McConnell,
- 14:47the longest serving senator ever from Kentucky, ensured that the
- 14:51Commonwealth received plenty of federal funding. Back home. He was
- 14:54a key architect of his party's rise to power and
- 14:57a state long dominated by Democrats. He is married to
- 15:01Elaine Chow, labor secretary for Bush in Transportation secretary during
- 15:05Trump's first term. The senator referred to her as his
- 15:09quote ultimate teammate and confidant end of quote. Chow resigned
- 15:13after the Capital Insurrection, saying it had quote deeply troubled
- 15:18end of quote her, and now we turn to an obituary,
- 15:25Joanne Higgins Lair seventy nine. With heavy hearts, we announced
- 15:30the passing of Joanne N. Higgins Lair of Springsville, Kentucky,
- 15:34who left us tragically on February fifteenth, twenty twenty five,

- 23:23by David B. Whitlock, Life Matters. Friday Night is usually
- 23:28movie nights for Laurie and me, with Luri being the
- 23:31movie finder, narrowing our choices to two or three from
- 23:34which we mutually decide. Although the genre for this last
- 23:37one was not for me. I'm not a horror movie guy.
- 23:40I like to go to bed with pleasant thoughts, though
- 23:43last week was an exception. She found a horror movie
- 23:45that drew me in and kept me focused for two hours.
- 23:48Heretic is not a movie for the faint of heart,
- 23:51Not so much for the blood and gore so typical
- 23:53of horror movies, but for the suspense this movie maintains
- 23:56throughout the film. It's more of a suspense thriller focusing
- 24:00on psychological torment than a typical horror movie. The object
- 24:04of that tormentor mister Reid played by Hugh Grant, happens
- 24:08to be two Mormon missionaries. The movie's writers use Mormonism
- 24:12as a straw man for religion in general. Hugh Grant's
- 24:16character now a formidable frontal attack on all fates. The
- 24:20arrows which he fires in a shotgun like fashion, cast
- 24:23out on all religions. Because it's a movie, not a
- 24:26documentary on the validity or abuses in religion, there's no
- 24:30time to examine flaws in his analogies. Only once does one.
- 24:34As a missionary's counter attack, I think your rhetoric is thin.
- 24:39Mister Reid argues forcefully and convincingly. He's even likable, but
- 24:44I'm a huge grand fan. Anyway, the audience gets the
- 24:47impression he knows what he's talking about. He has a point.
- 24:50You find yourself thinking the writers are correct if religion
- 24:54is all about control. The old Karl Marx accusation of
- 24:57religion as the opium of the people in the inherence
- 25:01of religion are a diluted mass, and we are in
- 25:03a mess. For when we the people become our own
- 25:06higher power, each of us being a god unto ourselves,
- 25:09with the result that right and wrong mush into matters
- 25:13of personal preference. As Fyodor doys Chetsky famously equipped quote,
- 25:18without God, all things are permitted end of quote. For
- 25:22the statistic character Grant plays, what is permitted is frightening,
- 25:26but no worse than the actions of many demented religious
- 25:30misleaders throughout the centuries. It's become an accepted truth that
- 25:35we each choose our own truth, and that becomes truth.
- 25:38But that assumption points to something beyond ourselves. For bigs
- 25:42a question, where did this idea of truth come from?
- 25:45If truth is not eternal, we contradict ourselves in our denial.
- 25:49As philosopher Ronald Nash said, quote, any denial of the
- 25:53eternity of truth turns out to be an affirmation of
- 25:57its eternity end of quotes. In the notion of eternal
- 26:01ideas presents the atheists with the bigger problem explaining the
- 26:05existence of stuff and where it came from before the
- 26:08Big Bang ever banged what was Go back even further,
- 26:13try wrapping your mind around nothing? How did something come
- 26:16from nothing? Existence from non existence? For the apostle Paul,
- 26:21it all comes together in Christ, who was before all
- 26:24things and in whom his creation quote holds together from
- 26:27Collajans one sixteen through seventeen, inviting us into eternal truth
- 26:32through his life, death, and resurrection. Religions can become exercises
- 26:37in trying to reach God by acts and rituals that
- 26:40presumably please God, and in doing so evolve into complex
- 26:44systems of controlling others, whereas respective adherents step on each
- 26:48other on the way of the latter. But Christ is
- 26:50all about having a relationship. Religion says do while Christ
- 26:55says done. Religions require more and more to make ourselves right.

- 27:28Lewis said, quote, if you want a religion to make
- 27:31you feel really comfortable, I certainly don't recommend Christianity, and
- 27:35of quote, maybe it's too much to ponder for a
- 27:38Friday night movie night. Maybe I should pick the movie
- 27:41next time, Mary Poppins. Anyone a brief Here. Christian Community
