- 0:04- Hello and welcome to the one and only
- 0:06Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:09We trademarked that name, bitches.
- 0:11- That's right.
- 0:12- That's right.
- 0:13- We are litigious.
- 0:15- Litigious.
- 0:16- We are litigious.
- 0:17- I like that.
- 0:18- Yes, yeah.
- 0:19- Not really.
- 0:20- Who are you?
- 0:20- My name is Olivia.
- 0:21- My name is Shauna.
- 0:22- Yeah, and it's so good to be back with you guys.
- 0:25If it's your first time with us, welcome.
- 0:28We're so excited to have you.
- 0:29And if you're a returning listener,
- 0:31we're ready to get into it.
- 0:32So Shauna, since I've been gone,
- 0:34I've heard that you actually had quite the encounter.
- 0:38- I did.
- 0:39Okay, so I have two jobs.
- 0:42I don't know how it happened.
- 0:44Whoops.
- 0:45- The Academy.
- 0:46- Technically three.
- 0:47- Oh god, this is a job too.
- 0:49- Yeah.
- 0:50- Shit, I need to do it.
- 0:50- Good bad.
- 0:51This is my last episode.
- 0:52(laughing)
- 0:55So I bartend at a place in Phoenix.
- 0:59And it was a chill Sunday night in this guy walks in
- 1:04and he had a mask on like a COVID style mask
- 1:07and just has on a baby blue like New York Yankees hat
- 1:11with the stickers still on,
- 1:12believe fucking belt.
- 1:14- Okay.
- 1:15- And these clean Jordans.
- 1:17- Okay.
- 1:18- And it's like, can I buy something so I can charge my cell phone
- 1:21and I said, well, yeah, of course, you're on a beard.
- 1:24So he sits at the bar,
- 1:25his plugs in his cell phone and I was like,
- 1:27what do you usually like to drink?
- 1:28- Bud light.
- 1:30- Well, we don't have any Bud light
- 1:31'cause we're a craft beer bar.
- 1:32But here let me pour you like a light beer or something similar.
- 1:34So I put it down in front of him and it came out to like
- 1:37$6 and he puts down a 20.
- 1:40I give him his change and he just leaves the change sitting there.
- 1:43And after a couple of minutes, he's like, this is your tip.
- 1:45- Yeah.
- 1:46- Like, okay.
- 1:47Interesting.
- 1:49- He leaves the mask on and he's sitting there talking
- 1:52to a guy at the bar and they're talking about kid cutie
- 1:56and Kanye, like old Kanye versus New Kanye.
- 2:00- And I thought this was the most interesting part.
- 2:02So they're going into this discussion of music.
- 2:06- How Kanye has really started to go downhill, right?
- 2:11- He said that he does not like,
- 2:13I haven't even said who this is.
- 2:14- Yeah, no, but that's a point.
- 2:15- Okay.
- 2:16So he is talking about how new Kanye's music's weird.
- 2:19He has some song, I guess I didn't listen to it
- 2:21'cause fuck Kanye, where he repeats the same term,
- 2:24like 23 times.
- 2:25And he was like, seriously, you think that's cool
- 2:27to the next guy?
- 2:28- Yeah.
- 2:29- Like they were joking, riffing,
- 2:30'cause he's like, oh, I think Kanye is a matte,
- 2:31a matte, a matte.
- 2:32- I don't know, I still like him.
- 2:34And he's like, he thought that was cool.
- 2:35- He thought that was good.
- 2:36- He said that's what he was talking to.
- 2:37- He thought that was good.
- 2:38- And I'm looking at him and I can see his eyes.
- 2:42And I said, you look a lot like Lil Nas X.
- 2:45And he's like, yeah, I get that a lot.
- 2:48At this point, he still is not taking a single sip
- 2:50of his peer.
- 2:51- Yeah, 'cause he doesn't want to take the mask off.
- 2:52- He doesn't want to take the mask off.
- 2:54- And so I start putting like this together.
- 2:56I'm like, why did he tip us so much for single beer
- 2:58that he hasn't even drank?
- 3:00Hasn't taken his mask off,
- 3:01'cause he doesn't want us to see his face.
- 3:04So he's there for a while.
- 3:05He ends up buying like a can to go.
- 3:07He only takes off his mask when he goes to the back
- 3:09of the restaurant.
- 3:11We're no one can see him.
- 3:13And I see him dancing to the music like this.
- 3:16(laughing)
- 3:17And I was like, and I texted my coworker
- 3:19and I said, dog, I'm pretty sure that's Lil Nas X.
- 3:22Like I think that is him.
- 3:24- Yeah.
- 3:25- So he's paying, closing out on the,
- 3:28he pays for the to go beer.
- 3:29And again, tips another like 10 bucks, 20 bucks.
- 3:32And I was like, you have to tell us
- 3:35if you're secretly a little Nas X, okay.
- 3:37And he just goes, oh, you caught me all jokingly.
- 3:40A black sedan pulls up in the middle of the street
- 3:43outside with tinted windows.
- 3:45He walks up, gets in the back seat and drives away.
- 3:49And I go Lil Nas X's Instagram page.
- 3:51- Yeah.
- 3:52- He's in Arizona.
- 3:53- Oh wow.
- 3:54- And he posted the same hat that he was wearing.
- 3:55So it was 100% Lil Nas X.
- 3:58- I love it, but he's like, oh, I'll pay for something.
- 4:01It's like, you could have just been like,
- 4:02can I trust my phone?
- 4:03- He could have been like, I'm Lil Nas X.
- 4:04Can I trust my phone?
- 4:06- Yes.
- 4:07- I would have probably had a lot more questions.
- 4:08Like what, what's going on?
- 4:11- Why am I here?
- 4:12- He walked in through like the weird side entrance
- 4:14on the street.
- 4:16- Oh, maybe he has like a hook up.
- 4:18- That's for the week.
- 4:19The rest of the night was just,
- 4:21all the customers, he came and all the regulars were like,
- 4:24Lil Nas X was just here.
- 4:26- Yeah, it's for the real T of it all is the opinion on Kanye.
- 4:31- It's the correct opinion.
- 4:32- It's a correct opinion.
- 4:33- It's much better on you, God yeah.
- 4:34- Yeah.
- 4:35- And then he was very nice.
- 4:36He was so delightful.
- 4:37And then I found a lot,
- 4:38'cause I was searching Reddit.
- 4:39I was in a Lil Nas X Reddit holder.
- 4:41- Yeah.
- 4:42- And I found a lot of pictures of him wearing those shoes,
- 4:44wearing the belt with the hat.
- 4:46- So you really went in and there are a lot of things.
- 4:49- Yeah, I love that.
- 4:50- He was so thoughtful.
- 4:51- He was so thoughtful.
- 4:52- The one time I'm gone, I was like, damn it.
- 4:54- Literally.
- 4:55And I took that ship from another bartender
- 4:58that she came in later to like drink.
- 5:00And she's like, the one night I'm not working,
- 5:02you get to meet Lil Nas X.
- 5:04After I told him, but he looked like Lil Nas X,
- 5:06I was like, that's a compliment by the way,
- 5:08because I love him.
- 5:10- Yeah.
- 5:10- And I really do.
- 5:12I love him.
- 5:13- Yeah.
- 5:13- So it's so meta.
- 5:15- It's amazing.
- 5:16- That is true.
- 5:18Like I bet you celebrities really look at COVID
- 5:20so differently because they did get anonymity
- 5:24that they didn't normally have.
- 5:26And like I think Lil Nas X has very distinct eyes,
- 5:30but even that's how I thought he's pretty nice.
- 5:32- Oh geez.
- 5:32- No, like who that person is.
- 5:35And like, you know, like someone like a Harry Styles.
- 5:38- Yeah.
- 5:39- Who would normally get like stalked.
- 5:40Like people figured out what his mass face looked like.
- 5:43- Yeah.
- 5:44- But for like a period of time, like they were able
- 5:46to kind of go out and I exist.
- 5:48So it's probably like a weird juxtaposition for them of like,
- 5:51oh yeah, I can just look like it.
- 5:53- Kind of lay in the--
- 5:54- Someone who's like a germaphogue.
- 5:55- Yeah.
- 5:56And like when he first walked in,
- 5:57that's what I just kind of assumed.
- 5:58I can no offense to anyone who still looks mask.
- 6:00Like I mean deficient to people.
- 6:01- Do you need it?
- 6:03- But then it became clear that he's not even drinking the beer.
- 6:06He never took a single sip of the beer.
- 6:08- Yeah.
- 6:09- I guess you would have to go like up.
- 6:10- Yeah.
- 6:11- And like, yeah.
- 6:11- And then I saw one picture of him recently
- 6:13and he had like grills and stuff.
- 6:15- And I, then you would have really, really, yeah.
- 6:17So I could just man with a diamonds in his teeth
- 6:20and from a big, his diamond earrings too.
- 6:23Like longer.
- 6:24- I looked at him, I was like, this is a wealthy person.
- 6:26(laughing)
- 6:28I have my shea and earrings on.
- 6:31I'm like, this is like rich person.
- 6:33- I love that so much.
- 6:34Well, while you were meeting Little Nons' ex,
- 6:36I was actually watching the sequel, "Lives of Mormon Wise,"
- 6:40which, to a very, very, very different--
- 6:43- Speaking of Little Nons' ex.
- 6:44- Oh, so, you know, the, so they were,
- 6:48well, Taylor Frankie Paul, who's like the main character
- 6:50on the show, is known for the soft swinging Mormon.
- 6:55- Okay, wait, real quick clarifying question.
- 6:57Is this a reality show or a scripted show?
- 7:00- It's a reality show.
- 7:01- Okay, what's it on?
- 7:02- It's on Hulu now, but it started with these TikTokers.
- 7:07And so basically like a couple of years ago,
- 7:09the soft swinging Mormon scandal came out.
- 7:12- It's the soft swinging.
- 7:14But like, actually having sex.
- 7:16- So so. - So then get that far into it.
- 7:18But they were like swapping, they were like,
- 7:21swapping husbands, and doing all the stuff.
- 7:24- Would they do all the stuff?
- 7:25- And stuff?
- 7:26- The side sex.
- 7:27Like, they weren't doing sex.
- 7:28- Yeah, yeah.
- 7:29They weren't doing sex, but they're doing everything but.
- 7:31And so it comes out, but like, it comes out on Reddit.
- 7:35And so this girl, Taylor Frankie Paul,
- 7:37decides to just be like, you know what, screw it.
- 7:40No one's taking my story.
- 7:41I'm gonna go tell it.
- 7:42- How it?
- 7:43- It's on the internet and starts telling this whole story.
- 7:46And you know, the Hulu producers were like,
- 7:49we gotta get on with this.
- 7:50- More Mormons.
- 7:51- And so they start shooting this pilot
- 7:54with this woman, Taylor Frankie Paul.
- 7:57As this happens, she starts stating another guy,
- 8:00while they're filming the pilot,
- 8:01she gets arrested for domestic violence.
- 8:04- Oh my God.
- 8:05- And it is called the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
- 8:08And it's all about this Mormon mom talk like,
- 8:13is it like Utah, like they are very Mormon?
- 8:15- Even more Mormon.
- 8:15- Some of them are very Mormon.
- 8:17Some of them are not very Mormon on the show.
- 8:19- Is there they like fundamentalist?
- 8:21- Yeah, I mean, most Mormon Utah's are very, very strict.
- 8:25Just because they've grown up in that culture.
- 8:27So it's, this is how the world got introduced to them.
- 8:30And then you come in and it's the first episode
- 8:33I will not lie, it's a little hard to get through.
- 8:35But after it looked me.
- 8:37- In turn.
- 8:38- Oh my God, it's so good.
- 8:39I never followed them before, but now I'm just like,
- 8:41it's so sucked in on all their drama.
- 8:43There's a bunch of after-cash drama.
- 8:45- What?
- 8:46- This one male-ciffin of world.
- 8:47- I'm really in reality shows most of the time.
- 8:50- She wants to play the victim so bad,
- 8:52but in turn she made herself the biggest villain
- 8:55in the whole show.
- 8:57And it's so good.
- 8:58And I'm just so excited for her season too.
- 9:00So a very opposite size of the spectrum.
- 9:04But we were having fun.
- 9:06I was, I was in a hotel in San Francisco,
- 9:10learned about Utah, but two very different places.
- 9:13Let's say that, you know.
- 9:14- So funny that like the things that we've watched
- 9:16when we were in a hotel room,
- 9:17pretty true amount of time, like you end up
- 9:19rewatching old Adam Sandler movies.
- 9:21They're always on.
- 9:22Happy Gilmore is always on.
- 9:24- Yeah.
- 9:24- Or you find some E or was Bravo or something
- 9:27and you're like, whatever.
- 9:28- Yeah, I got all the sex in the city.
- 9:30- It's always all sex in the city.
- 9:31And I watch that in every hotel room.
- 9:33But yeah, it's like you gotta find something
- 9:35to kill those evenings.
- 9:36- Kill those evenings.
- 9:37- Kill those evenings.
- 9:39- Awesome.
- 9:40Well, that sounds amazing.
- 9:41- Yeah.
- 9:42- Speaking of what might happen to us in the afterlife,
- 9:46we're gonna talk about a movie sequel
- 9:47that recently came out that was 40 years in the making.
- 9:51(dramatic music)
- 9:54The biggest movie news this past year or so, probably.
- 10:00Was the announcement of a sequel to Beetlejuice
- 10:03some 49 years since the first one.
- 10:06I'm just kidding, it was 36.
- 10:07- You made me feel pretty old then.
- 10:09- What?
- 10:10- What?
- 10:11- What?
- 10:12- How did that work?
- 10:13- How did that work?
- 10:14Tim Burton made a sequel to the first movie
- 10:16and it just came out.
- 10:18We're gonna talk about that and have a slightly
- 10:19spoilery discussion.
- 10:21But let's first revisit the reason for the sequel,
- 10:251988 Beetlejuice.
- 10:28- Yes.
- 10:29And so like we mentioned,
- 10:30we're gonna talk a little bit about Beetlejuice.
- 10:32It came out 36 years ago.
- 10:34So we are gonna spoil that a little bit for you.
- 10:37- When we were in "Spoil This Movie"
- 10:38that came out in the '80s.
- 10:39- Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:40- Yes, yes, yes.
- 10:41Once we get into the newest movie that came out,
- 10:44"Beatlejuice Beetlejuice," we will kind of let you know
- 10:46when the spoilers are so you can pause it,
- 10:49come back after you've seen the movie.
- 10:51- Mm-hmm.
- 10:52- But you know, really earlier today,
- 10:54I wanted to actually go in and rewatch Beetlejuice.
- 10:58You know, you guys had done an episode on Beetlejuice
- 11:00in the past, the trailer.
- 11:01- And I was pre-elever.
- 11:02- Before I had joined.
- 11:04So I wanted to kind of quickly give out my
- 11:06rendition of my Beetlejuice thoughts
- 11:09and really ultimately what I thought of the movie.
- 11:13The first note that I have for you guys is,
- 11:15how did I forget "Alic Baldwin" used to be so hot?
- 11:18- He was so handsome in this movie.
- 11:19- Yeah, oh my God.
- 11:21- And she and Davis is gorgeous.
- 11:24- Yeah, I think it's all the evil inside of "Alic Baldwin"
- 11:28that made me forget it.
- 11:29And then it has made him just like rapidly lose it.
- 11:32- He just gets like saggy or
- 11:34- Yeah. - And they're more cranky.
- 11:36- Yeah, all the hateful and - Yeah, all the hateful.
- 11:38- All the hateful. - All the hateful.
- 11:39- All the hateful. - All the hateful.
- 11:40- And all those things.
- 11:41But really,
- 11:42the rapid succession of my note is,
- 11:46what would you realistically do if your neighbor
- 11:48was putting your house on the market without your consent?
- 11:51- What?
- 11:52- Can you imagine?
- 11:53- Like she just comes in and it's like,
- 11:55this house is much too big for you.
- 11:57I've actually put it on the off,
- 11:59or I put it up and I'm already getting offers for this.
- 12:01- How dare you live here?
- 12:02- Yeah, first of all.
- 12:03- Because you don't have children.
- 12:04- And it's like, like what a crazy concept.
- 12:08Just your neighbor actually putting her house
- 12:11on the market without her consent.
- 12:12- She's hustling.
- 12:13- She's a real estate. - She's a real estate.
- 12:14- She's a real estate. - She's a real estate.
- 12:16- She has some work.
- 12:17- It's chill.
- 12:18- I love these just random notes.
- 12:20- Yeah, the next one is,
- 12:21that dog had murder in its soul.
- 12:23- I forgot there was a dog.
- 12:25- The dog murders them.
- 12:27A lot of murders.
- 12:28- I was like runs in front of the con.
- 12:29- Yeah, runs in front of the con.
- 12:30- That's her. - And then they actually
- 12:32like fall into the water.
- 12:33- That's her, okay.
- 12:34- I do have some semantics of it
- 12:37because the windows were open.
- 12:39So realistically,
- 12:41how could we not get out of the car?
- 12:43- Maybe they just gave up.
- 12:44- Yeah, they just said, you know what, screw it.
- 12:46- I mean, at some point you just kind of go,
- 12:48"It had to take me."
- 12:49- When I was actually-- - She just
- 12:50- She just took the wheel.
- 12:51- When I was researching this though,
- 12:52the original script for this film
- 12:55had a much much darker turn.
- 12:57- Like that thing. - That they were gonna do.
- 12:59Where it was these people from within this city
- 13:02of wherever they are in Connecticut
- 13:05is chasing them, like kind of like pitchfork style.
- 13:08- Or what?
- 13:09- And ultimately they're trying to avoid them
- 13:12and they drown.
- 13:14- So they died like the 1600s or something.
- 13:16- Yeah, they drown.
- 13:17- Like horrifically, like while these people
- 13:20were chasing them and they ended up cutting it out
- 13:22of the story to make it more of like a horror comedy.
- 13:26- Yeah.
- 13:27- Ultimately I think it was a good choice,
- 13:29but the original-- - A dog
- 13:30- Reading out in front of your car
- 13:31and you fall off the bridge.
- 13:32- Yeah, it's pretty.
- 13:33- It's pretty like, oh, yeah.
- 13:35- Yeah, yeah.
- 13:36- Oh, I'm in my dream house, my staycation,
- 13:38and then they end up getting there.
- 13:39My next no was ultimately,
- 13:42if there are six in the afterlife,
- 13:44does that mean that there's weed?
- 13:46I'm asking the really important question,
- 13:49fear. - I live in order to know
- 13:50before she goes. (laughs)
- 13:52If she can bring her Rick and Morty Bong.
- 13:54- Yeah, it's a fair question.
- 13:55- It's my Rick and Morty coming with me.
- 13:57He better, me seeks, me seeks, you know.
- 14:00- And you name your Bong, Mr. Meessing.
- 14:02- Yeah, because it helps me with so many things, you know.
- 14:06Me seek.
- 14:07- Me seek.
- 14:08- Yeah, and then my final no in this one was
- 14:11Keaton must have had so much fun being this character,
- 14:15and he's recently said in interviews
- 14:17that this is actually his favorite character,
- 14:18he's played all time, so.
- 14:19- He just gets to be so silly in goofy,
- 14:21and he gets that one F-bomb per movie.
- 14:23- Yeah, I wonder if he was like,
- 14:25channeling a specific person,
- 14:26like, you know how Patrick Bateman is inspired
- 14:29by Tom Cruise.
- 14:31- Jumping up and down the couch.
- 14:32- Yeah, I really are just the psychopaths.
- 14:34- Just the best thing.
- 14:36- That Tom Cruise is is like,
- 14:37who do you think Keaton was like channeling?
- 14:40Like, in my mind, the first thing I thought of
- 14:42was like Harvey Weinstein.
- 14:44- Oh my God.
- 14:45- 'Cause Beetlejuice is a fucking creep, okay.
- 14:47- Beetlejuice really is.
- 14:48- He's a been the first movie.
- 14:49- In the first movie, he's a predator.
- 14:50- He's very, very touchy.
- 14:52- He's like, roping.
- 14:53- He's roping.
- 14:54- He's roping.
- 14:55- Real quick, we've already kind of covered it,
- 14:57but Beetlejuice was directed by Tim Burton,
- 14:59Michael McDowell, Warren Scar and Larry Wilson,
- 15:03got writing credits.
- 15:04Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis were in it,
- 15:06famously Michael Keaton that we mentioned
- 15:09and our fave here at the podcast, Winona writer.
- 15:12The obnoxious Beetlejuice played by Michael Keaton
- 15:15was kind of a predator.
- 15:16He wants to marry Lydia, who is a teenager.
- 15:21- She's strange.
- 15:23- Yeah.
- 15:24- And unusual.
- 15:25- She's so weird.
- 15:26- I quote Beetlejuice all the time, Andrew.
- 15:28Whenever I, like,
- 15:30in a depressive episode or because I'm quote,
- 15:33"Gotha, Jason."
- 15:34- Yeah.
- 15:35- My whole life is a dark room.
- 15:37One, dark room.
- 15:39(laughs)
- 15:40- He's like, are you doing okay?
- 15:42- No.
- 15:43- No.
- 15:44- Have I ever?
- 15:45- I do think it's kind of interesting.
- 15:46So like the way that Tim Burton displays purgatory,
- 15:50really ultimately is like the civil servant government office.
- 15:55- Is it a shot?
- 15:55- Like even after you die,
- 15:57you still have to have a shot.
- 15:58- Are you kidding me?
- 16:00That's my health.
- 16:01- Well, that's like the joke in the first one.
- 16:03She's like, I wouldn't have had my little accident.
- 16:05If I knew this was gonna happen.
- 16:07So like Tim Burton's portrayal of purgatory,
- 16:11which is where you go in religion.
- 16:13If you, you know, live yourself is civil servant.
- 16:18(laughs)
- 16:18- It's kind of weird, like, if you think about Tim Burton's,
- 16:23I don't know, concept of the afterlife, like you're saying.
- 16:25So there's a heaven and a hell, it seems like.
- 16:29And then in this area where beetle juiced
- 16:31in the waiting room exists is kind of your waiting room.
- 16:34So when you first die, no matter how good you are on earth,
- 16:37you have to go here.
- 16:38- Yep.
- 16:39- And then they decide whether or not you go to the great beyond
- 16:43or you burn and hell, I kind of.
- 16:45- So the way that I thought of it more was Burton's idea was,
- 16:50you are within the place that you died.
- 16:53And if you want to try to go somewhere else or change that,
- 16:57like you go into that civil servanthood,
- 16:59but I don't know if the lore behind it
- 17:01has really been broken down, or meant to be.
- 17:03- I mean, I guess we can't hurt someone
- 17:05- It's much smarter than us has done it.
- 17:06- Right, I guess we'll get a little into it
- 17:08when we talk about the sequel.
- 17:10'Cause they have different levels of kind of the afterlife
- 17:14than the ATES.
- 17:15So we'll retouch that there.
- 17:17But I would hate to think that I was like a good person,
- 17:20my whole life, and then I'd die.
- 17:22And I'd just like,
- 17:23- Sean, you have to work at the DMV now.
- 17:24Are you kidding me?
- 17:26- Yeah, I like, no, wait, why?
- 17:28- I should have sent more.
- 17:30- I don't know if I know it.
- 17:32I was just gonna be at the DMV no matter what.
- 17:34I would have done a lot more for that.
- 17:35- I would have had a lot more fun.
- 17:36I would have had a lot more fun.
- 17:38- Well, what's really interesting about the first
- 17:39Beetlejuice movie, and I think a lot of people forget this
- 17:42is this is actually Tim Burton's second movie
- 17:45than he ever did.
- 17:45- I didn't know that.
- 17:47- What was the first one?
- 17:47- Peewee's big adventure.
- 17:48- Oh my God, I always forget that he did.
- 17:50- Yeah, so he was very like fun and kind of silly and goofy.
- 17:55And that's how people saw him.
- 17:57And a lot of the people who took this all thought
- 17:59that their careers were gonna be ended
- 18:01by teaming this on.
- 18:03- Interesting.
- 18:04- But they believed in it as like an independent film
- 18:06and something that was worth saying.
- 18:08And most people don't know this,
- 18:10but the studio at the last minute
- 18:13wanted to rename it from Beetlejuice to House of Ghost,
- 18:17which are you talking?
- 18:18- House of Ghost.
- 18:19- House of Ghost, what?
- 18:20- That's dumb.
- 18:21- The dumbest thing I've ever heard.
- 18:22- Don't lie.
- 18:23- And in sarcasm, Tim Burton said,
- 18:25"We should just call it scared sheetless."
- 18:27And the producers didn't take it as a joke
- 18:31and it was almost called scared sheetless.
- 18:34(laughing)
- 18:35- Which I actually didn't hate it
- 18:37because they do have the sheets over them
- 18:39and the first movie.
- 18:41And it's a little bit of tongue and cheek within it,
- 18:43but I think ultimately like for it to not be Beetlejuice
- 18:47would just be like there is a alternate universe
- 18:51where that exists and who knows?
- 18:53- The burn cut.
- 18:54- Yeah, right.
- 18:55- Yeah, scared sheetless.
- 18:57- I love the practical effects in the original Beetlejuice
- 18:59and they bring that a lot back for the second one
- 19:01how it's kind of the practical,
- 19:03- The practical, - The practical,
- 19:03- and practical.
- 19:04- I love that style that Tim Burton brings us up.
- 19:07- So the first movie out of all the budget,
- 19:09they only dedicated $1 million to CGI
- 19:13in the original movie.
- 19:15And at the time CGI was not what it is today.
- 19:19So that was ultimately like nothing in there
- 19:21and he really wanted to keep that practical element
- 19:24and he's really done that a lot throughout the movies
- 19:28that he's been within.
- 19:29Actually, one of the main negotiation points
- 19:32that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton both had
- 19:35with doing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
- 19:37was they did not want overproduction of CGI
- 19:41and that they had to continue stop motion
- 19:44in a lot of these real aspects of the movie.
- 19:48- Yeah, and some interesting facts that I found
- 19:51was researching for this is instead of the iconic
- 19:55dayo song that we all know that is persistent
- 19:59throughout the movie, it was actually almost
- 20:01two different songs in stead.
- 20:04And so it's, if I didn't care by the ink spots
- 20:09would have been within the dinner scene.
- 20:12- I know, familiar song from 1939.
- 20:15- Okay.
- 20:16- So don't play me if I'm not knowing it.
- 20:18And then in the final scene where Lydia is with the,
- 20:22like lifted up after she passed the elevetating.
- 20:25- Yeah, it was going to be when a man loves a woman.
- 20:27- Oh, that's kind of cute.
- 20:29- Yeah.
- 20:30- What did it end up being?
- 20:30I don't remember.
- 20:31- Jumping the line.
- 20:32- Mm-hmm.
- 20:33- Any of the football players and all that in there.
- 20:35- Oh, that's right.
- 20:36- Oh, man.
- 20:37Oh my God, that scene at the dinner table
- 20:38where they're singing dayo is so fun.
- 20:40- Yeah, we really can't stop it.
- 20:42- And then, the Capitol hair is amazing
- 20:44because she puts her facial expressions
- 20:46of just being confused, but also dancing.
- 20:49- She's such a good physical comedy.
- 20:51- You know, okay, I watched Beetlejuice
- 20:54when we had our Beetlejuice episode three years ago, maybe.
- 20:58I didn't see Beetlejuice until I was in my 20s.
- 21:02- Really?
- 21:03- Yeah.
- 21:04- I have no idea why.
- 21:05- I think I was like nine.
- 21:06- And that's a most people, like most millennials.
- 21:08- It just escaped me.
- 21:10I don't know why.
- 21:11- And I also used to be very sensitive.
- 21:15I had a sensitive disposition as a child.
- 21:17- To what?
- 21:18- Things just scared me very easily.
- 21:20- Oh, that's interesting.
- 21:21- Yeah, and so if I saw something in a movie
- 21:23or something that I thought was scary
- 21:24or that might be scary, I was like,
- 21:26I don't wanna watch that.
- 21:26It looks scary.
- 21:27- Really?
- 21:28- And now I love horror movies, but,
- 21:30and not a whole lot offends me unless it's gratuitous violence.
- 21:33But, no, I think as a kid, I just thought,
- 21:36oh, that looks like a scary movie.
- 21:37I don't wanna watch that.
- 21:39So it took me a long time,
- 21:40but, I mean, now I love it.
- 21:41I think it's amazing.
- 21:43- That's interesting.
- 21:43- Well, in the original script,
- 21:45Larry Wilson, he's one of the producers,
- 21:47actually talks about the original ending for Lydia,
- 21:51was actually gonna be significantly darker.
- 21:54- Ooh.
- 21:55- And the film would have ended with Lydia dying in a fire
- 21:58and joining her friends in the afterlife.
- 22:00- Oh, no, that's off.
- 22:02- They changed it, considering the message,
- 22:05it would send to young people that death would be
- 22:08a happy ending.
- 22:09- Yeah.
- 22:10- And she was dealing with suicidal ideations
- 22:13throughout the movie.
- 22:14- She's depressed the whole living room.
- 22:16- So I think that it was good that they changed it.
- 22:18- That reminds me of the finale
- 22:20of chilling adventures of Sabrina.
- 22:23She dies, and then her boyfriend ends up killing himself,
- 22:26so he can be with her in the afterlife.
- 22:28And I remember thinking that ruined the whole show.
- 22:30- Yeah.
- 22:31- Because she was like, so it's young people watching this stuff,
- 22:33and they think, oh, I could just kill myself
- 22:35to be with my friends again.
- 22:37- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:38- The snow, the snow, the snow, the snow.
- 22:39- And some original script things that were changed.
- 22:43Beetlejuice, well, first Lydia wasn't gonna be
- 22:45the main character.
- 22:46Lydia had a sister who was gonna be the main character.
- 22:49They ended up cutting her.
- 22:51Beetlejuice was supposed to be a short Middle Eastern man,
- 22:55who eventually turned into like a bat with wings thing.
- 22:59And Tim Burton decided to change that.
- 23:02And the original director on this project
- 23:05was actually Wes Craven.
- 23:06Before he left, and they gave it to Tim Burton.
- 23:11- Interesting, so different would it have been?
- 23:13- Yes, Wes Craven was willing to be the main character.
- 23:16- I think the original script would have made sense
- 23:17for Wes Craven, because the brutal murder from the town
- 23:21is people-- - It would have been a lot darker
- 23:22and maybe not like in tongue and cheek comedy.
- 23:24- Yeah, and up the cold toss like it is today.
- 23:26- But a fun fact that I know about Beetlejuice.
- 23:29Beetlejuice is only on screen for 18 minutes
- 23:33in the Forrestville. - Yes.
- 23:34- So he makes such an impact in that first movie
- 23:37with such little screen time,
- 23:39and the whole thing's named after him.
- 23:40- Yeah, but it's like you watch that movie
- 23:42and you don't realize really he was only in it for 18 minutes
- 23:45like I've just said.
- 23:46- You know the part where he like kicks down the tree
- 23:49and he's like, "What is that?"
- 23:52And like grabs his nuts or whatever.
- 23:54That is so gross. - That is so gross.
- 23:55- It defends it.
- 23:56- Yeah, that is actually an outtake of the set.
- 23:59Actually wasn't supposed to do that.
- 24:01And he kicks it and it falls down
- 24:03and he was doing that at the set like a designer.
- 24:06- Oh my God.
- 24:07- And Timberlion decided to keep it in.
- 24:09- That's hilarious. - And so there are
- 24:11a lot of those little moments within it.
- 24:13One of the really interesting things that I saw
- 24:15from everyone within this project
- 24:18and a lot of Timberlion projects is he lets people
- 24:22lead with the character they want to go forward with.
- 24:27- Like let it open around with it.
- 24:28- Yeah, and Beetlejuice is such a bombastic character
- 24:31that you have to let him kind of riff.
- 24:33Like you have to, you throw Jim Carrey
- 24:37or Robin Williams in a movie.
- 24:39- You gotta let them just be playable then.
- 24:41- You gotta let them just be down.
- 24:42- Yeah, and everyone who's worked with him
- 24:44and a lot of the people who do work with him
- 24:46stick with him for a very long time
- 24:47because he has such a specific directorial style
- 24:51and lets artists be artists.
- 24:53And I think Timberlion, this being his second film,
- 24:56is so crazy because he's so influential
- 24:59and really makes Winona Ryder so influential
- 25:02after this moment.
- 25:03- Johnny Depp, eventually with his career,
- 25:06Edward Scissorhans.
- 25:07- Yes, that's Timberlion.
- 25:09- It's after.
- 25:09- Yeah, and Winona again, Helen a bottom-carter
- 25:13who is his wife and I think.
- 25:14- Wife and Muse, yeah.
- 25:16- I think probably on good terms from what I've seen.
- 25:19- I think so, yeah.
- 25:20Now he has a new muse which people are questioning.
- 25:24But I think it's just people just love.
- 25:26- Helen a bottom-carter and like knowns
- 25:28we're gonna compete with her, she's so unique and like.
- 25:31- Yeah, the word muse just reminds me of back in the day.
- 25:34I'm his muse, I'm Cajem.
- 25:36- I'm Cajem.
- 25:37- I'm Cajem.
- 25:38- I'm Cajem.
- 25:39- You know, I was, yeah.
- 25:40- I wanna be someone's muse.
- 25:41- You know, Beetlejuice ultimately was a movie
- 25:45with a $15 million budget that actually
- 25:48ended up grossing a $75 million box office.
- 25:52- Yeah.
- 25:53- And I wanted to Oscar.
- 25:54- I did for Best Makeup.
- 25:55- I realized that.
- 25:56- For Best Makeup.
- 25:57- Yeah, the makeup is incredible.
- 25:58And I mean, it's really good in the sequel as well.
- 26:01Just again, the practical effects.
- 26:03Like you can tell that Michael Keaton is just,
- 26:06there's no CGI on him unless silly things are happening.
- 26:09- Yeah, but it's like I'm popping out.
- 26:11It's head spins around, but otherwise he's just
- 26:13makeup and a wig and looks crazy, so.
- 26:16- Yeah, and ultimately the first Beetlejuice,
- 26:18there's a TV show.
- 26:19I don't know if you knew that.
- 26:21- I never watched it.
- 26:22- Okay, so it's funny.
- 26:23I had never seen the Beetlejuice movie as a kid,
- 26:27but I watched the cart too.
- 26:29- Okay.
- 26:30- And that wasn't too scary for me.
- 26:31- Yeah, 'cause it was Lydia and Beetlejuice like solving.
- 26:34- They're under a world of crimes.
- 26:35- And they're buds.
- 26:36They're kind of more like the same age and they're,
- 26:40I don't know, like Beetlejuice is a dead man,
- 26:42but they make them like best friends.
- 26:45Like she summons Beetlejuice in her bedroom
- 26:46just to hang out with them and yeah, solve crimes.
- 26:49And she's cute little Goth girl and she opens her
- 26:52in boutique at one point, which is like my favorite episode.
- 26:55And Beetlejuice, it's like,
- 26:57failing 'cause it's a Goth boutique.
- 26:59- Yeah.
- 27:00- It's so heat.
- 27:01Somehow hypnotizes the town folk,
- 27:03to all go by her and become a girl.
- 27:05Shop till you shriek at Lydia's boutique.
- 27:08And they all, like zombies, look at their,
- 27:10it's pretty cute.
- 27:11- That's amazing.
- 27:12- Yeah.
- 27:13- Well, ultimately, you know,
- 27:14the first Beetlejuice cannot be beat,
- 27:17but we're here to talk about how the sequel
- 27:20pairs up to the average.
- 27:22- Yes.
- 27:23- I think it pairs very well,
- 27:24but we will take a little break and then talk about
- 27:27our thoughts on Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
- 27:30(dramatic music)
- 27:32- So Tim Burton said he wouldn't make a sequel
- 27:37unless Michael Keaton reprised his role as Beetlejuice
- 27:40and that came true.
- 27:41When owner Riders started working on stranger things
- 27:44and she warned the Duffer Brothers,
- 27:46if there's ever a chance to do a sequel to Beetlejuice,
- 27:48you have to give me the time off for it.
- 27:50'Cause this movie was teased for years.
- 27:53There were so many fake posters on Facebook
- 27:56of fan-made art where everyone would go,
- 27:58"Oh my God, is it finally happening?"
- 28:00No, not yet, not yet.
- 28:02That it almost felt like a joke when it was finally.
- 28:05- Yes, we were all like, are you serious?
- 28:07No, no, that's fake.
- 28:08It's actually a real original sequel
- 28:12that was supposed to be happening
- 28:14was Beetlejuice goes to Hawaii.
- 28:18- No!
- 28:19- Yes, yes, yes.
- 28:21- It's like Brady Bunch.
- 28:22- Yeah, right.
- 28:23- Where the Death family decides to open
- 28:26A Bunch of Properties in Hawaii
- 28:29and really go colonized like they love to.
- 28:32- Isn't that the plot of the sequel to "We Can Do It"
- 28:37"Bernies?"
- 28:38I think they go to Hawaii.
- 28:39- I don't know, maybe.
- 28:40- Like, that's just a sequel.
- 28:41- They said we know we're being a plotter.
- 28:42- Yeah, and so ultimately that failed, which thank God.
- 28:46- Thank God.
- 28:47- And so I watched a lot of interviews
- 28:49and a lot of press that these actors were doing.
- 28:52Both the new cast and the older cast
- 28:54and their biggest thing was leave it alone.
- 28:57If you don't have something good,
- 28:59like we really do not want to reprise this.
- 29:02And we want to leave it as a standalone
- 29:04and they had a history of saying that
- 29:07where we're not going to just make a Beetlejuice
- 29:08to make up for this.
- 29:09- Just Beetlejuice.
- 29:10- We want it to be really, really good.
- 29:12And once Tim Burton met Jenner Antega,
- 29:16he really like found that, you know, inspiration.
- 29:20- She's so perfect.
- 29:21So he thought he was done with movies,
- 29:24but he directed four episodes of Wednesday,
- 29:26which you can see his influence in so much.
- 29:29- Yeah.
- 29:29- Especially with that the main monster bad guy.
- 29:32- Yeah.
- 29:33- Like is a Tim Burton character.
- 29:35- Yep.
- 29:36- But yeah, like you said, he met Jenner Antega,
- 29:38convinced him to reassess the potential
- 29:40for the Beetlejuice sequel,
- 29:41and she ended up playing Lydia's daughter Astrid.
- 29:44Okay, so we're gonna get into some spoiler territory here.
- 29:46- So spoilers, pause.
- 29:48- We will see you after you see it.
- 29:49- I'm back.
- 29:50- I'll tell no thanks for joining us.
- 29:52Okay, bye.
- 29:53- Yeah, we love you.
- 29:54- Anyway, spoiler time.
- 29:55I loved this movie.
- 29:57- I did as well.
- 29:58I thought it was really, really well done.
- 30:00I thought that they did fan fodder,
- 30:03but not in such a way where it took away from the story.
- 30:06- Exactly.
- 30:07- There wasn't so much Easter egg
- 30:08that the whole time you're like, oh yeah.
- 30:10- Oh yeah.
- 30:11- Call back, call back, call back.
- 30:12- Yeah, call back.
- 30:12- Cause those kind of sequels are just money grabs,
- 30:15and just there's no story to tell.
- 30:18- Yep.
- 30:19- The zoo lander's sequel, right?
- 30:21- Yes.
- 30:22- I don't even remember that.
- 30:23- Exactly.
- 30:23- Cause they're a fierce watcher.
- 30:24- Yeah.
- 30:25- And the anchor man's sequel.
- 30:27- Yeah.
- 30:28- There's nothing new to cover.
- 30:29- Yeah.
- 30:30- This felt new, like they had the old cast
- 30:34surprising their roles.
- 30:35Catherine O'Hara, Michael Keaton,
- 30:39Winona Ryder is back.
- 30:41- Mm-hmm.
- 30:42- The Gina Davis and Alec Baldwin are not back.
- 30:46- Because Ghost Can't Eat.
- 30:47- Because Ghost Can Eat,
- 30:48which is a good point,
- 30:49but also Alec Baldwin can't get work right now.
- 30:52- Yeah.
- 30:52- And they had some weird,
- 30:53- Very insurable at this moment.
- 30:55- Yeah, really.
- 30:56- There's too many guns in fall,
- 30:58to the set of Beetlejuice.
- 30:59- It's not how they're not.
- 31:00- No, it's not how they're not.
- 31:01They did have a weird kind of explanation in this movie
- 31:04for why they're not haunting the house.
- 31:05Anymore, and Lydia and a throwaway line goes,
- 31:08- We found a loophole.
- 31:09- We found a loophole,
- 31:10and they rolled a crossover,
- 31:11and it was just like done.
- 31:12- I don't know.
- 31:13- I was like, I wanted a little more
- 31:14of the like, give this something.
- 31:15- Give me like some lore,
- 31:17some building of your universe.
- 31:20- Because they can just like,
- 31:22they're the cost of it.
- 31:23- Yeah.
- 31:24- Because they did establish in this movie,
- 31:26like we talked about earlier,
- 31:27that there are different levels to the afterlife.
- 31:29So you go to this purgatory waiting room,
- 31:32and then you get your passport or your ticket stamped,
- 31:35and then you go on the soul train,
- 31:37which you're actually up every time.
- 31:38- Yeah.
- 31:39- It's literally like,
- 31:40"I'll vote the soul train to sell this."
- 31:42- It is.
- 31:43- Yeah, to the great beyond.
- 31:45- And you either go to the great beyond,
- 31:46but then the other one said,
- 31:47"The Fields of Elysium,"
- 31:48which is what that priest was talking about earlier,
- 31:51which is funny.
- 31:51And then,
- 31:53you would have cracked up at that part.
- 31:55- There's this like creepy priest in it,
- 31:58because so basically the reason for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
- 32:02is the Deets father dies.
- 32:04Can you remember his name?
- 32:06It's not that important.
- 32:06- Charles?
- 32:07- Yeah, Charles Deets dies.
- 32:09- Yeah.
- 32:10- So they're all going back to Barry-Hem
- 32:12within the Connecticut home,
- 32:15where everything is happening.
- 32:16- Yes.
- 32:17- And so--
- 32:18- The actor who played Charles, Jeffrey Jones,
- 32:19was not invited back for this movie.
- 32:21- He has some troubles.
- 32:23- He's got some legal troubles.
- 32:24- And we'll leave it at that.
- 32:26- And so they made him die of very gruesome death.
- 32:31- Where it's like half his body.
- 32:33- He's essentially headless in die of movie,
- 32:36but the practical effect is so gruesome.
- 32:38We're just blood-assorted.
- 32:39- And he goes to that old,
- 32:40as every time he talks, like,
- 32:41"Well, and then the scene that shows how he died
- 32:45is Clay Nation like stop motion, which was really cute."
- 32:47- Yeah.
- 32:48- I do have to say though, Clay Nation gives me
- 32:50uncanny valley, and it makes me really,
- 32:52really, really, really uncomfortable.
- 32:54- So you unpack that.
- 32:56- No, it's like a human programming thing.
- 32:59- Well, uncanny valley, yeah.
- 33:01- Yeah.
- 33:02- Clay Nation, you see that?
- 33:03- Yeah, it's like we evolve to know
- 33:06when things don't look that way.
- 33:07- I mean, like the polar express movie gets me
- 33:09on candy valley.
- 33:10- That's mean, they're trying so hard to make them look human.
- 33:13- Exactly, but they died and they just can't look.
- 33:15- They don't look right.
- 33:16- They don't look right.
- 33:17- That's why, yeah, exactly.
- 33:18- I think Clay Nation, I'm like,
- 33:19this is so far removed from reality.
- 33:21- We could do a whole episode on why I think
- 33:23humans developed the ability to--
- 33:25- Let's do an episode on uncanny valley.
- 33:26- Yeah, uncanny valley.
- 33:28- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:28(laughing)
- 33:30Quick, quick, quick.
- 33:30(laughing)
- 33:32- But, you know, I really, really love this movie.
- 33:34Some of the things that I wanted to call back to
- 33:38is Lydia's show is called Ghost House.
- 33:41- Yeah.
- 33:41- Which as I said in the beginning was what--
- 33:43- The house of the ghost.
- 33:44- Yeah, what the studio wanted to call
- 33:47"Beetle Juice" in the beginning.
- 33:49So they had some kind of funny, like,
- 33:51- Yeah.
- 33:52- Call that, it's like, if you know you know the deep history
- 33:54of like "Beetle Juice" - That's cute.
- 33:56- That you can start to see it.
- 33:58- My known as Lydia was amazing in this movie.
- 34:00She has like the same nuances as Lydia,
- 34:03but she's not as depressed.
- 34:05I mean, she's definitely going through
- 34:06some "Beetle Juice" PTSD anytime she sees Black and White Stripes.
- 34:11She's like, oh God, like,
- 34:12and we, it's come to find out he's actually kind of like
- 34:14stalking her somehow.
- 34:16Like, yeah, this guy's got a heart on her.
- 34:18- I'm from the day I, yeah.
- 34:19- At least now she's a grown woman.
- 34:22- Yes.
- 34:22- So it's a little more appropriate,
- 34:25but the picture is framed at his desk.
- 34:27He's definitely of like a teenage girl.
- 34:29Just that he's like, - Yeah.
- 34:30- And a sweetie.
- 34:31- He's like, oh yeah, I love this picture.
- 34:33- Yeah.
- 34:34- And so there are a lot of new characters that get introduced.
- 34:38At the end of the first "Beetle Juice" movie,
- 34:40whenever he's about to try to marry Lydia,
- 34:43he pulls like a finger out of his pocket, right?
- 34:46And there's a bring on it and he goes,
- 34:48sorry, it shouldn't mean much to me.
- 34:50Don't worry about her.
- 34:51- I forgot that.
- 34:51- And so that finger that he had in his pocket
- 34:55ends up being the main villain within this.
- 34:58- Yeah, she was the main villain,
- 35:00but I don't think she was very necessary
- 35:03to the plot.
- 35:04- The movie would have been just as good without her,
- 35:06but it's Monica Belucci,
- 35:08yeah, she plays "Beetle Juice" his ex-wife.
- 35:10The scene that describes kind of how "Beetle Juice"
- 35:13died and how she died, hilarious.
- 35:15- Yeah.
- 35:16- And he's speaking Spanish for some reason.
- 35:18- So we know he started in Spain.
- 35:22- Yeah, he speaks Spanish at the end of the movie again too.
- 35:25Like, "Beetle Juice" from Spain.
- 35:27- All right, I'm gonna let go.
- 35:28- He's like kind of described as like a timeless being.
- 35:32So like, he still don't really know,
- 35:33but it was funny, like the traditional ceremony
- 35:36where we ate the chickens off of heads
- 35:38and sacrificed the chickens off the heads.
- 35:40- Yeah, there you go.
- 35:41And the heads off the chickens.
- 35:43And sacrificed to go drink each other's blood.
- 35:45- But he's like, "Fuck, what I need you this for my wedding?"
- 35:47- Yeah.
- 35:48- Blue it on the renewals.
- 35:51- Yes, I would tell you.
- 35:52- There you go.
- 35:52- It's all gonna be just,
- 35:54all the cats got the codes in the air.
- 35:56- Oh, I don't know.
- 35:57I love goats.
- 35:58- They're spoken for.
- 35:59- They are just pretend.
- 36:00- Okay.
- 36:00- Well, you sort of those collapsible knives.
- 36:01- Okay, there you go.
- 36:02- There you go.
- 36:03- Britney.
- 36:04- Yeah.
- 36:05- It's a fake knife.
- 36:06Honey, no, it's not.
- 36:07- We got it from Britney's prop store.
- 36:09(laughing)
- 36:11- House of Spears.
- 36:12- I think that Genoa Ortega was delightful in this video.
- 36:15She's different enough from Wednesday.
- 36:18I mean, she's still kind of the dark moody burrows,
- 36:21dead pain.
- 36:22- Yeah.
- 36:23- I felt so bad for her.
- 36:24This reminded me of Wednesday a lot.
- 36:26- Did you watch Wednesday?
- 36:27- Yeah.
- 36:28- So in Wednesday, Wednesday goes on her first date
- 36:31and he ends up being evil.
- 36:33- Yeah.
- 36:34- And then in this one,
- 36:35Astrid ends up going on her first date, spoiler,
- 36:37he's evil.
- 36:38- The dead guy too.
- 36:39- Yeah.
- 36:40- Yeah, and he's dead and he wants to murder Suede.
- 36:43- His family.
- 36:44- Yeah.
- 36:45- And he wants to, that shook me.
- 36:46- Yeah.
- 36:47- Because I wasn't expecting.
- 36:48- No, it was dark.
- 36:49- Yeah.
- 36:50- It was good.
- 36:51And wants Astrid to come to the Astrid for life
- 36:54so that he can steal her soul.
- 36:55- Like trade a life.
- 36:56- Like trade a life.
- 36:57- And go back and be a little shit on Earth again.
- 37:00So that leads to Lydia being like,
- 37:02oh my God, I can't believe I have to do this,
- 37:04but Beatle choose Beatle choose Beatle choose.
- 37:07I need his help.
- 37:08- Yeah.
- 37:09- We also have Justin Thoreau who plays Lydia's
- 37:11manager/boyfriend.
- 37:14- Boyfriend.
- 37:15- He is so greasy and comical.
- 37:18- So cool.
- 37:19- And this movie,
- 37:20his little throw-a-line,
- 37:21where he's like,
- 37:21I just was helpfully getting boxes from the store.
- 37:24- He's very,
- 37:25and weaponizing therapy space.
- 37:27- Yes.
- 37:28- You guys we talk about all the time.
- 37:29But he was really like the way that they costume
- 37:33to sign to him and like gave him his hair.
- 37:36- His slick back hair.
- 37:38- His the creepy dude from Charlie's Angels,
- 37:41the first one.
- 37:42- He was sniffing holes.
- 37:43- His hair.
- 37:44- His hair.
- 37:45Like that was the inspo,
- 37:45that was all they needed.
- 37:47It was exactly like copy-place that guy.
- 37:48- He was hilarious.
- 37:49He was creepy.
- 37:51You could tell no one liked him.
- 37:53I mean,
- 37:53- Yeah.
- 37:54- Catherine O'Harrot is.
- 37:55- So funny.
- 37:56- Jenner,
- 37:57- Our Tegas character hates it all.
- 37:58- They all hate him.
- 37:59- And even Lydia's like,
- 38:00- Oh, he loves me.
- 38:02- He loves me.
- 38:03- He loves me.
- 38:03And I kinda need,
- 38:04and I don't know.
- 38:05I've been denying love.
- 38:07And she got a divorce from Astrid's father who then died,
- 38:11which adds a nice layer of Astrid's backstory
- 38:14and what she is depressed as she is.
- 38:17- Yeah.
- 38:18- She gets to reunite with her down the afterlife,
- 38:20which is so sad.
- 38:21Oh my God,
- 38:22he's got a little piranha.
- 38:22- Yeah, he's stuck in him.
- 38:24- That's a handsome man, no.
- 38:25I don't know what that was.
- 38:26He was a handsome man.
- 38:27- Yeah, he was, yeah, he was very,
- 38:28- Yeah.
- 38:29- Yeah, I really, really liked it.
- 38:30When I was a writer,
- 38:31I kinda talked about how,
- 38:32before she had really seen like the full script,
- 38:35she'd always kinda seen Lydia as a person
- 38:38who would never have a child or never get married
- 38:41or never fall in love
- 38:42and kinda just be stuck with these ghosts.
- 38:44So I thought it was kind of like an interesting compromise
- 38:47that they came to to have the husband already be dead
- 38:50and Lydia,
- 38:52as she says in the first 20 minutes of film,
- 38:55sell out and become a touch of host,
- 38:59medium and kind of betray them.
- 39:02And I wish they had really brought that in more to
- 39:04as soon as Adam and Barbara disappeared.
- 39:07Like she felt like,
- 39:09because they really became her parents
- 39:11and they were parental figures and her friends.
- 39:14Then she's just gone.
- 39:15And I wish they had kind of delvened to that part bar.
- 39:18- They couldn't have done it in Clayton Nation.
- 39:19- I would have, yeah.
- 39:20- They could have been in the business.
- 39:21- And this is them after they were gone
- 39:22and then I was never close with,
- 39:24Delia, her and Delia have gotten closer over the years.
- 39:28I think they could have shown this movie.
- 39:29They have an understanding of each other,
- 39:31like a respect, but they're not exactly close.
- 39:34- Yeah, she's like, once I sold out in May and about
- 39:36and she's like, "You like me?"
- 39:37- Yeah, now that I'm loaded,
- 39:39you started liking me, that's weird.
- 39:41Delia is still an artist.
- 39:43- Are you in the movies so funny?
- 39:45- Yeah.
- 39:46- The feudal performance of the whole house.
- 39:48- Yes.
- 39:49- The performance.
- 39:50- I'm very glad she's hilarious.
- 39:52- I really, really liked it.
- 39:54I think it's one of those sequels,
- 39:56but definitely worth a rewatch.
- 39:58- Oh yeah.
- 39:59- I walked out of it and was like,
- 39:59"Man, I want to see that again."
- 40:01Just sort of like pick up the things that,
- 40:04you know, I'm just-- - The little minst.
- 40:05- Yeah, and normally I'm an avid,
- 40:07like I do not go see a second movie.
- 40:10If I, like I never saw Ingramant too,
- 40:12a girl would think it needed it.
- 40:14And so normally I'm like an avid,
- 40:16I don't go for a stupid sequel,
- 40:18but I do really think that this was a great one.
- 40:21It was with immense respect to the story
- 40:25and ultimately it made it still campy and fun
- 40:28and throwbacks to the original movie,
- 40:30but not in a way where it really overdid it.
- 40:33- I agree.
- 40:34I think it was a good addition to the story
- 40:37and of the next step of Lydia's life
- 40:40and Delia's life and Beetlejuice looks amazing
- 40:43and he's so funny.
- 40:45In the end, again, we get to see
- 40:47Lydia's red wedding dress come back
- 40:49because Beetlejuice is still trying to marry her.
- 40:52(silence)
- 40:54- Shout out to this movie today
- 40:58and she's looking like a fucking snack
- 41:00and I am hungover and just like at a hat and just like,
- 41:04oh god.
- 41:05She was like, you look like my femme girlfriend.
- 41:09- Yeah, I think we like a lesbian and a couple
- 41:11and I'm like the butch one.
- 41:13- Yeah, that looks fun.
- 41:15- That's fun.
- 41:15- They're gonna hear for it.
- 41:16- You know, I really wanted to bring Belidia
- 41:19and so far this movie has as of today grossed 264 million
- 41:24globally, nearly 200 million domestically
- 41:30and according to the New York Times,
- 41:32there was a time during the film's development
- 41:34when the studio tried to push it
- 41:35as a max streaming exclusive.
- 41:38- This needed to be in theaters.
- 41:40- Yeah, come on.
- 41:41- Yeah, it's worth it.
- 41:42- It's worth it.
- 41:43- I'm happy that they did it in that way.
- 41:46- No, I love going to the movies.
- 41:48I got the movies probably once a week.
- 41:50- Yeah.
- 41:51- I just love it.
- 41:52- Yeah, I enjoy movie experience.
- 41:55I do like the ability to pause and talk and chill
- 41:58and chat. - And chat.
- 41:59- Yeah.
- 42:00- And, you know, do have my own stacks,
- 42:02but if there's a good movie coming out,
- 42:06what, you know, it's worth like putting your money
- 42:08in art you care about.
- 42:09- It's just like Nicole Kidman says,
- 42:12glowing pictures,
- 42:12glimmering pictures on a silver screen.
- 42:15- Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.
- 42:17(laughing)
- 42:19- And, you know, ultimately, you know,
- 42:21before we close this episode out,
- 42:24do you think we get a third Beetlejuice
- 42:28or Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice?
- 42:30- I don't think so.
- 42:31- Really?
- 42:32- I don't think so.
- 42:33I think it took so long to make this movie.
- 42:37Burton had to drop the budget from $147 million
- 42:41to $100 million to get the film even greenlit.
- 42:44Keaton writer, O'Hara Ann Ortega,
- 42:46all had to take pay cuts.
- 42:47I mean, they still made a crap ton of money.
- 42:49But I think it was just such a long time in the making
- 42:52that I'm not sure if they need a third one.
- 42:54I mean, there was like some Beetlejuice babies,
- 42:56these, which were creepy.
- 42:58- Yeah, that was so scary.
- 42:59- But I think it kind of, I think it ran its course.
- 43:03That's my opinion.
- 43:04I don't, I think if there was a third one at that point,
- 43:06it would feel kind of gratuitous.
- 43:09- Yeah. - Cash grab.
- 43:10- Yeah, I could see it with the main villain
- 43:14coming back and really going after Lydia and those people.
- 43:19But yeah, it still has to be really, really well done.
- 43:22I don't think Catherine or her or any of them
- 43:24are gonna come back again.
- 43:25I don't think so.
- 43:26- I think you would still get Winona
- 43:27just because she's like in love with Tim Burton.
- 43:29I'm gonna do anything for him.
- 43:31- Michael Keaton's not getting it a younger too.
- 43:33I mean, I mean, that Beetlejuice,
- 43:36you got makeup covers.
- 43:37- That make up covers it real well.
- 43:37- It's all prosthetics, baby.
- 43:39So he didn't have that problem.
- 43:40- Yeah.
- 43:41- I mean, the cast is all aging and as other projects.
- 43:44So I think this was like a love letter to fans.
- 43:46And I think it needs to be a fan.
- 43:48- Yeah, and ultimately I think it was
- 43:52for each of the actors, a love letter to their characters.
- 43:55- Yeah, yeah.
- 43:56- They all talk about them with such reverence
- 43:59and respect for them.
- 44:00And a lot of people have said Tim Burton was
- 44:03one of the most influential directors in their careers
- 44:06and taught them to speak up for themselves
- 44:08and advocate for a character.
- 44:10- Yeah, but he got in a block of fame star recently.
- 44:13And when one of the writers said,
- 44:14you kind of made it feel like it was okay
- 44:16to be a weird creepy golf teenager
- 44:18because we love me for who I was.
- 44:21And yeah, I love that about Tim Burton.
- 44:24- Yeah. - Bring out the weirdos
- 44:25and all of us.
- 44:26- Yes.
- 44:27- I wonder what would happen if our listeners
- 44:28said our names three times.
- 44:31- Puckolder, drink a bottle of a candy.
- 44:32- Yeah.
- 44:33- No.
- 44:34- It was an attempt.
