- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back on this Texan Tuesday edition of the Craig
- 0:09Speaker 1: Way Show. Jay Kerman here in for the voice of
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Longhorns, Craig Way, as we welcome in Shahan Jayarajah
- 0:15Speaker 1: from CBS Sports, who was at that State Fair Street fight. Shahan,
- 0:20Speaker 1: thanks so much for taking the time to join us
- 0:22Speaker 1: and break it down here today.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Well, look, it was certainly a loss that is sticking
- 0:30Speaker 1: with Texas fans. Our text line was pretty busy yesterday
- 0:34Speaker 1: as it has been the entire season when it comes
- 0:36Speaker 1: to concerns about the Longhorns and this offense based on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the struggles they had against that Brent Venables defense. But really,
- 0:43Speaker 1: over the course of the last few weeks as a whole,
- 0:45Speaker 1: in your mind right now, how concerned do Texas fans
- 0:48Speaker 1: have the right to be when it comes to where
- 0:50Speaker 1: this offense is at the halfway point of the season?
- 0:54Speaker 3: No, I think the concerns are fair, right? You do
- 0:56Speaker 3: have to contextualize. They played three of the best defenses
- 0:59Speaker 3: in the country in Ohio State, Tennessee and Oklahoma. But
- 1:03Speaker 3: they also have looked hapless at times. And, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 3: I know that Steve Sarkeesian keeps pointing to the total
- 1:08Speaker 3: offense numbers, the scoring numbers and all that. But that's
- 1:11Speaker 3: not really telling the story. It's their inability to stay
- 1:13Speaker 3: on the field. It's their inability to put drives together.
- 1:16Speaker 3: You know, obviously something that's been pointed out is their
- 1:19Speaker 3: three and out rate. It's just not good enough for
- 1:22Speaker 3: what is just frankly the most expensive offense in college
- 1:25Speaker 3: football led by the most high profile quarterback.
- 1:28Speaker 2: In college football.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So again, if Texas manages to string together a couple
- 1:32Speaker 3: first downs in the second half, this isn't a ball
- 1:34Speaker 3: game at all. They don't even need to score in
- 1:37Speaker 3: that case, but they go three and out three times
- 1:39Speaker 3: to start. They go four and out the second time,
- 1:42Speaker 3: and then they throw the interception. So I do think
- 1:45Speaker 3: that there are very legitimate concerns, and I think the
- 1:47Speaker 3: big reason that this has led to so much consternation
- 1:50Speaker 3: is because people saw it through the first four games
- 1:53Speaker 3: as well.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think the frustrating part for for Texas fans,
- 1:58Speaker 1: when it comes to this game is you knew you
- 1:59Speaker 1: were going up against an offense that wasn't going to
- 2:02Speaker 1: be able to do much. And really Oklahoma, just the
- 2:05Speaker 1: one offensive touchdown in the game, you get the bow
- 2:07Speaker 1: and pick six, you get the block punt. And it
- 2:10Speaker 1: felt to me, I don't know how you felt about
- 2:12Speaker 1: the game coming in. It felt to me as though
- 2:15Speaker 1: that was the only way Texas was going to lose
- 2:16Speaker 1: the ball game was given up non-offensive touchdowns. And They
- 2:20Speaker 1: did kind of give up two of them. I liked
- 2:21Speaker 1: what you said on X after the game was over.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Oklahoma's transformation into SEC Iowa is complete. It was a
- 2:27Speaker 1: Hawkeye-like win for Brent Venables, guys.
- 2:30Speaker 2: A hundred percent.
- 2:31Speaker 3: And by the way, I think that people thought that
- 2:32Speaker 3: that was an insult. No, that's just a compliment based
- 2:35Speaker 3: on style of play.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That's how Iowa has won so many games over the years.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But I did say heading into last week, like if
- 2:41Speaker 3: Texas loses this game, it is 100% going to be
- 2:45Speaker 3: on the back of Texas. And it was 100% on
- 2:48Speaker 3: the back of Texas. You mentioned two non-offensive touchdowns. I mean,
- 2:52Speaker 3: you pay a special teams coordinator a million dollars and
- 2:55Speaker 3: you can't block in the end zone? That just can't happen.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You have a pick six on a broken play. That
- 3:01Speaker 3: can't happen. You have the interception where, again, everybody's seen
- 3:04Speaker 3: the replay. There's so much space in the middle of
- 3:06Speaker 3: the field. Why are there no receivers there? Instead, Arch
- 3:09Speaker 3: Manning has to try to thread a pass.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And ultimately, it sets up a game-winning field goal.
- 3:13Speaker 3: So essentially, 17 points were almost directly gifted by the
- 3:18Speaker 3: offensive Texas. And by the way, even when you talk
- 3:20Speaker 3: about the defense, it was penalties.
- 3:22Speaker 2: It wasn't actually breakdowns.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Whenever they went and scored their touchdowns. So just a
- 3:27Speaker 3: very disappointing effort. And again, these are the kind of mistakes,
- 3:30Speaker 3: just to be frank, we don't see Georgia making these mistakes.
- 3:33Speaker 3: We don't see Alabama making these mistakes. We usually don't
- 3:37Speaker 3: see Ohio State making these mistakes. And that's the class
- 3:40Speaker 3: of team that Texas should be in and deserves to
- 3:43Speaker 3: be in for the most part. They have to clean
- 3:45Speaker 3: up these mistakes and not beat themselves.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And unfortunately, sometimes when Georgia makes those mistakes, the officials
- 3:51Speaker 1: turn around and make a mistake. Like we saw in
- 3:53Speaker 1: Tuscaloosa on Saturday night, Shahan Jayarajah from CBS Sports is
- 3:57Speaker 1: with us talking college football, talking Texas Longhorns.
- 4:00Speaker 4: To the extent that the AP poll.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Even matters right now, do you think Texas is properly
- 4:04Speaker 1: ranked at number seven?
- 4:07Speaker 5: I do.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And again, everybody's going to kind of point to like, well,
- 4:09Speaker 3: you know, we have the big win and we only
- 4:11Speaker 3: have the one loss. I think that it's also about
- 4:13Speaker 3: the body of work, right? It's also about not looking
- 4:16Speaker 3: great against a Tennessee team that might be number 14,
- 4:19Speaker 3: but I don't think it's regarded all that highly. It's also,
- 4:21Speaker 3: you know, again, a little bit of a lackluster effort
- 4:24Speaker 3: against UTSA. It's having three bad quarters against Ohio State,
- 4:28Speaker 3: even though you have the fourth good one, right? So
- 4:30Speaker 3: I do think that it's fair for them to be
- 4:32Speaker 3: kind of in the middle range of the one-loss SEC
- 4:35Speaker 3: teams at this point. And again, when you compare them, like, again,
- 4:39Speaker 3: I think that Alabama at this point has looked like
- 4:41Speaker 3: a better team than them for more of the year.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I think that obviously you look at the Notre Dames,
- 4:45Speaker 3: the Miamis, the Georgias, those are kind of no-brainers. So
- 4:48Speaker 3: I think that where they're at is just about right
- 4:50Speaker 3: right now, and they're going to have plenty of opportunity
- 4:52Speaker 3: to play their way back up.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and we're going to get to next week and
- 4:55Speaker 1: looking ahead at some of these matchups.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I'll put you on the spot, though.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Who is the team that you feel like is best
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the sport right now through seven weeks?
- 5:04Speaker 3: I think it's Georgia. I'm not going to overthink it, right?
- 5:07Speaker 3: I think that Miami, Notre Dame, really interesting teams in
- 5:11Speaker 3: that conversation. But the difference with Georgia is now they've
- 5:13Speaker 3: gone and done it against one of the best. And
- 5:15Speaker 3: I do think Alabama is one of the best, officiating
- 5:19Speaker 3: miscues aside. But I do think that Georgia looks like
- 5:22Speaker 3: Georgia again. And that was something I think even in 2025,
- 5:25Speaker 3: you saw the up and down, you saw the breakdown,
- 5:28Speaker 3: you saw the mistakes.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Well, those are gone now.
- 5:30Speaker 3: This is a Georgia team on both sides of the
- 5:33Speaker 3: ball that is really just playing impressive football they've been
- 5:36Speaker 3: able to get efficient quarterback play from gunner stockton defensively
- 5:41Speaker 3: they've shut teams down again alabama had scored 45 points
- 5:44Speaker 3: in every game leading into that game where they're held
- 5:46Speaker 3: to 17 and i think georgia's defense looks like a
- 5:49Speaker 3: georgia defense i mean it was it was kind of
- 5:51Speaker 3: a an underrated factor like georgia in 21 and 22
- 5:54Speaker 3: was you know top five defense and they really hadn't
- 5:57Speaker 3: been at that level almost since that 2022 team. Well,
- 6:00Speaker 3: they look like they're back at that level, especially when
- 6:03Speaker 3: they play the run. So I think Georgia's the best
- 6:06Speaker 3: team in the sports. Again, I think that they're probably
- 6:09Speaker 3: right now, maybe even in a class of their own
- 6:11Speaker 3: right now, and we'll see if other teams are able
- 6:14Speaker 3: to play their way back up into it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah, if winning in Tuscaloosa and slowing down Keelan Russell
- 6:19Speaker 1: was that easy this year, I think more teams would
- 6:21Speaker 1: do it. So I'd agree with you right now. on
- 6:23Speaker 1: the Georgia Bulldogs coming in at number one. We've got
- 6:26Speaker 1: plenty of teams in the top 10 that are facing
- 6:28Speaker 1: tough tests this week. But before we get into all
- 6:30Speaker 1: of that, I want to come back to a couple
- 6:32Speaker 1: of SEC stories, specifically another team that joined Texas on
- 6:37Speaker 1: the loser side of your winners and losers column over
- 6:39Speaker 1: at CBSSports.com, and that's Texas A & M. I mean,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I got to get your thoughts on what's going on there.
- 6:44Speaker 1: After the 27-6 loss at Missouri, Mike Elko said, asked
- 6:48Speaker 1: some version, for those of you that missed it, of
- 6:50Speaker 1: what can fans be excited about when it comes to
- 6:53Speaker 1: your offense. He proceeded to take a shot at Texags,
- 6:56Speaker 1: the popular and powerful fan site, and its editor-in-chief, Billy Lucci,
- 7:00Speaker 1: calling it Billy's cesspool. He's since apologized. What was your
- 7:04Speaker 1: reaction to this, and what has the fallout been like
- 7:06Speaker 1: among A & M people that you've spoken with about it?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Well, first of all, if.
- 7:11Speaker 3: You're the head coach of Texas A & M, that
- 7:13Speaker 3: is the one enemy that you really cannot afford to
- 7:16Speaker 3: make because that is a very powerful figure in.
- 7:19Speaker 2: That market and a very powerful site.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And, you know, you can't even almost compare it to
- 7:23Speaker 3: even some of the Texas sites.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Like Texas is an entity all to itself.
- 7:27Speaker 3: But, you know, I think that it shows the level
- 7:29Speaker 3: of frustration there is right now, not just by Mike Elko,
- 7:32Speaker 3: but by everyone, right? This was a team that made
- 7:35Speaker 3: the college football playoff last year that was 11-1, that frankly, again,
- 7:39Speaker 3: up until the very second half of that Texas game,
- 7:42Speaker 3: looks like they might have been 12-0 and cruising through
- 7:45Speaker 3: the national picture. And so I think that it's frustrating
- 7:49Speaker 3: and a bit stunning for people to see how things
- 7:51Speaker 3: have changed since the second half of that Texas game on.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And again, look, the other part of this as well
- 7:57Speaker 3: is that they're obviously not going to fire Mike Elko.
- 7:59Speaker 3: They don't want to fire Mike Elko. And so I
- 8:02Speaker 3: think that there's this understanding that this is what we
- 8:04Speaker 3: got right now. And this is what we're dealing with.
- 8:06Speaker 3: And we might not even have answers on this roster
- 8:09Speaker 3: despite bringing in a really talented portal class and a
- 8:13Speaker 3: really talented recruiting class. So, I think that people are
- 8:16Speaker 3: just trying to deal with that. Now, I think that
- 8:18Speaker 3: A & M fans are, to some extent, I think
- 8:22Speaker 3: they understand what this year is probably going to be.
- 8:25Speaker 3: That it's probably a bit of a lost cause. But
- 8:27Speaker 3: I think they're trying to figure out, like, how can
- 8:29Speaker 3: we find any positives in this? And when your coach
- 8:32Speaker 3: is kind of throwing the fan base under the bus,
- 8:33Speaker 3: it doesn't feel good.
- 8:35Speaker 1: No, and you look across town a few states over
- 8:38Speaker 1: in Lexington, and you see that Will Stein might have
- 8:41Speaker 1: kind of been the secret sauce for that offense all along,
- 8:44Speaker 1: all the success that he's had so far with Kenny
- 8:46Speaker 1: Minchie at Kentucky.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Staying on that loser.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Side of that column, though, the winners and losers you
- 8:52Speaker 1: did over at CBS Sports, Florida's there because they've been
- 8:55Speaker 1: beaten handily two weeks in a row, got trucked by Mizzou,
- 8:58Speaker 1: then you lose by three scores at the Swamp to
- 9:01Speaker 1: South Carolina, a team that was winless in the SEC.
- 9:04Speaker 1: So it makes you wonder, right, which results, is it
- 9:06Speaker 1: the big win over Ole Miss or is it the
- 9:07Speaker 1: home loss of South Carolina that's more indicative of the
- 9:10Speaker 1: way you see this Florida season unfolding here over the
- 9:13Speaker 1: second half?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Well, this is what's interesting about the SEC this year
- 9:17Speaker 3: is that I think that, again, we have the Georgia-Alabama tier.
- 9:20Speaker 3: We'll maybe figure out if Texas can get back into
- 9:23Speaker 3: that tier. The second tier, though, like it is really tight.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And it's a little messy, frankly, right? Because you have, again,
- 9:31Speaker 3: LSU goes and wins big against Clemson, and then they
- 9:34Speaker 3: lose against Ole Miss. Then Ole Miss goes and loses
- 9:36Speaker 3: big to Florida. And then Florida goes and loses big
- 9:39Speaker 3: to Missouri and to South Carolina.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Like, I think that the.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Distance between these teams is closer than it's been in
- 9:46Speaker 3: a very long time. And I think that makes things
- 9:48Speaker 3: really complicated for this level of teams. Because, again, like
- 9:52Speaker 3: if you can be above that, like Georgia is right now,
- 9:54Speaker 3: like I think Alabama might be again, you can kind
- 9:56Speaker 3: of cruise through them.
- 9:57Speaker 2: But if you are Florida and you're in the middle
- 9:59Speaker 2: of it.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I mean, again, that means that there's a lot of
- 10:02Speaker 3: losable games in your nine game conference schedule, by the way.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And so, you know, I do think that Florida is
- 10:08Speaker 3: really good. I do think that offensively, they still have
- 10:10Speaker 3: more answers to come. I expect that Jaden Baugh isn't
- 10:13Speaker 3: going to be shut down every single week like he
- 10:15Speaker 3: has been the last two.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But I think also your defense has gotten exposed.
- 10:19Speaker 3: This is probably one of the bottom three defenses in
- 10:22Speaker 3: the SEC. I know we'll talk about it, probably a
- 10:24Speaker 3: get-right spot for this Texas offense. But I think that
- 10:28Speaker 3: also teams are starting to figure out if we shut
- 10:30Speaker 3: down Jaden Baugh and really try to press these receivers,
- 10:34Speaker 3: they've got great receivers. I mean, Aaron Files is a
- 10:36Speaker 3: good quarterback, but he's also not a playmaker necessarily either.
- 10:39Speaker 3: He's more somebody who, who wants to be in structure.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So I think they're getting a little figured out right now,
- 10:44Speaker 3: but I do also think there are more answers on
- 10:46Speaker 3: the roster than what they've had the past two weeks.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there's some element of this with the
- 10:50Speaker 1: new coaching staff, Sumrall and Buster Faulkner. Once the film
- 10:54Speaker 1: is out, it's a little bit easier to kind of
- 10:56Speaker 1: react to it. I kind of think about how Dylan
- 10:58Speaker 1: Raiola looked in relief versus coming out to play against
- 11:02Speaker 1: UCLA once the Bruins figured out, okay, this guy's not
- 11:05Speaker 1: going to hurt us in the same ways that Dante
- 11:07Speaker 1: Moore can. I I wonder if there's some of that
- 11:09Speaker 1: going on with Florida. And I wonder how you hinted
- 11:11Speaker 1: at think this matchup kind of hinges between Texas and Florida.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Is it as simple as the Longhorns being able to
- 11:18Speaker 1: do what Missouri and South Carolina did and stop the run?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's stopping the run on defense, and
- 11:24Speaker 3: I think offensively it's being explosive, right? This is a
- 11:28Speaker 3: Florida defense that just frankly has not been very good
- 11:31Speaker 3: through the first couple weeks of the year. They haven't
- 11:33Speaker 3: stopped the run at a high level, and they've gotten
- 11:35Speaker 3: bullied in the secondary specifically. So if you're Texas right now,
- 11:40Speaker 3: this has to be, again, the get-right game for your offense.
- 11:43Speaker 2: You need your receivers to show up. You need Arch
- 11:45Speaker 2: Manning to play mistake-free football.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And I think on the other side, like you said,
- 11:48Speaker 3: I mean, Texas has done a really good job against
- 11:51Speaker 3: the run for the most part. And again, Jaden Ball
- 11:53Speaker 3: is a different kind of challenge, but it's more about
- 11:55Speaker 3: eye discipline, I think, than even talent or disruption. Because,
- 11:59Speaker 3: you know, that's the thing that Buster Faulkner brings to
- 12:02Speaker 3: the table as Florida's offensive coordinator is he likes to
- 12:04Speaker 3: attack angles. He likes to catch you off guard. He
- 12:07Speaker 3: likes to create favorable matchups in his blocking schemes. If
- 12:11Speaker 3: you can avoid those and play complimentary mistake-free football, I
- 12:15Speaker 3: think that you have a really good chance to pull
- 12:17Speaker 3: out a win.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, keyword there is discipline.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I think it's being stressed in more ways than one
- 12:22Speaker 1: inside the Longhorn building right now defensively with Will Muschamp.
- 12:25Speaker 1: We're talking with Shahan J. Arraja from CBS Sports for
- 12:27Speaker 1: just a few more minutes.
- 12:28Speaker 4: What a slate. We've got this weekend.
- 12:30Speaker 1: There's plenty of other SEC games we could get to,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but I want to get your thoughts on Ohio State
- 12:34Speaker 1: and Indiana because the Hoosiers found a way to knock
- 12:38Speaker 1: off Nebraska down two scores on the road. I think
- 12:40Speaker 1: those two receivers are special, but Ohio State, they've looked
- 12:43Speaker 1: the part, I believe, since losing here in Austin.
- 12:48Speaker 2: No, they have.
- 12:48Speaker 3: This is a heavyweight matchup. This is a battle for
- 12:52Speaker 3: Big Ten supremacy. And again, outside of really one quarter,
- 12:55Speaker 3: like Ohio State and Indiana have really managed to take
- 12:58Speaker 3: care of business through these first couple of weeks. I'm
- 13:00Speaker 3: going to be really curious to see how Indiana matches
- 13:03Speaker 3: up because this is the first time that they're playing
- 13:05Speaker 3: against an elite level team. I think that Nebraska and Northwestern, frankly,
- 13:08Speaker 3: are top 25 caliber teams and they found ways to
- 13:11Speaker 3: win those games.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But both of them were a little messy.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And they needed a fourth quarter comeback against Nebraska specifically
- 13:18Speaker 3: in order to pull it off. Well, this is a
- 13:20Speaker 3: game where I think you need Josh Hoover in that
- 13:21Speaker 3: receiver core to be at their best from the word go.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Because when you look at Ohio State, not just the
- 13:27Speaker 3: text game, but in the week since that, Their secondary
- 13:29Speaker 3: has not been.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Playing to the best of their ability at this point.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I think that you always just assume that you can
- 13:35Speaker 3: replace all these pass rushers and all this stuff. I
- 13:38Speaker 3: don't think it's quite happened to the level that Ohio
- 13:40Speaker 3: State fans were hoping for. I think that on the
- 13:43Speaker 3: other side, too, if you're able to at least slow
- 13:45Speaker 3: down Jeremiah Smith and blanket him and force other guys
- 13:49Speaker 3: to beat you, which I think Indiana has the defensive
- 13:52Speaker 3: talent to do, That's going to give you a chance
- 13:54Speaker 3: in this spot. So again, it's really going to be,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I think, who can shut down the opposing passing game
- 14:00Speaker 3: and who also can control the pace of play, hold
- 14:03Speaker 3: on to the ball, give themselves a chance.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's going to be a really interesting matchup.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 1: A big key for me in that one, Indiana pressuring Sayan.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I feel like when you pressure him, it's led to
- 14:13Speaker 1: some less than desirable results in these big games for
- 14:16Speaker 1: Ohio State.
- 14:16Speaker 4: But you're right.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And I'm curious if you view the Big Ten kind
- 14:19Speaker 1: of the way you broke down the SEC.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Are Ohio State and Indiana.
- 14:22Speaker 1: in that top tier above, or is a team like
- 14:24Speaker 1: UCLA or some of these other middling Big Ten teams
- 14:28Speaker 1: that are in that 10 through 25 AP ranking, are
- 14:31Speaker 1: they pushing towards being in a tier with those two?
- 14:35Speaker 3: No, I think this one's really interesting, too, because I
- 14:37Speaker 3: think that, like you said, there are more teams pushing
- 14:39Speaker 3: for that top tier, I think, in the Big Ten.
- 14:42Speaker 3: But I think that top tier is a little less
- 14:43Speaker 3: high right now and is a little bit more accessible
- 14:46Speaker 3: than it is in the SEC. Like you said, Ohio
- 14:49Speaker 3: State has moments of looking a little mortal.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Indiana as well.
- 14:53Speaker 3: UCLA, like you said, has maybe been the best team,
- 14:56Speaker 3: you know, quarter by quarter in the Big Ten to
- 14:58Speaker 3: this point.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And that game finished, I think it was 17 to
- 15:01Speaker 2: 15 last week.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Well, if they just managed to not turn over the ball,
- 15:05Speaker 3: this probably should have been a 25-point victory for UCLA.
- 15:08Speaker 3: So I think that UCLA absolutely is knocking on the
- 15:12Speaker 3: door of that top group as well. And again, I
- 15:15Speaker 3: think Ohio State and Indiana have shown moments of looking
- 15:17Speaker 3: mortal as well. So it's probably a little bit more
- 15:21Speaker 3: muddy even at the top of the Big Ten than
- 15:23Speaker 3: it is in the SEC this year. And look, Georgia
- 15:25Speaker 3: has a long season to kind of prove that they're
- 15:27Speaker 3: above the rest of the field as well. But I
- 15:29Speaker 3: do think that the top is less separate in the
- 15:32Speaker 3: Big Ten than the SEC.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I don't know what to make of the top of
- 15:35Speaker 1: the Big 12, but we'll talk about one of its
- 15:37Speaker 1: teams first, BYU. Who needs that game more in Provo,
- 15:40Speaker 1: BYU or Notre Dame?
- 15:43Speaker 3: Well, look, I mean, I think it's a big spot
- 15:44Speaker 3: for Notre Dame, but this is the biggest spot in
- 15:47Speaker 3: program history for BYU. This is a game that they've
- 15:50Speaker 3: wanted for decades. You know, I've been doing some reporting.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I've got a story hopefully coming out Friday. I'm still
- 15:55Speaker 3: writing it. But basically, I mean, BYU set up a
- 15:59Speaker 3: series with Notre Dame back when both teams were independent
- 16:02Speaker 3: in 2012.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And they never got the return game back to Provo. Well,
- 16:06Speaker 2: now for the.
- 16:07Speaker 3: First time in program history, BYU is playing at the
- 16:10Speaker 3: highest level of college football. They're a top 10 team
- 16:13Speaker 3: in the country, and they're finally getting Notre Dame back
- 16:15Speaker 3: to town. Notre Dame represents so much of what BYU
- 16:18Speaker 3: wants to be. And from a pure football perspective, right,
- 16:21Speaker 3: we talk about BYU as a team that's maybe just
- 16:24Speaker 3: on the outside looking in, right? Like, yeah, they're really good,
- 16:27Speaker 3: but not quite that level, right? This is the game
- 16:30Speaker 3: where that can change because we know that Notre Dame
- 16:33Speaker 3: is at that level. And you get them at home,
- 16:35Speaker 3: you get them in a big spot. It sucks, I'll
- 16:38Speaker 3: just say, that their running back, LJ Martin, is out.
- 16:41Speaker 3: He's their best player. But I think that they're going
- 16:43Speaker 3: to compete hard on defense. I think that they have
- 16:45Speaker 3: ways to generate offense as well. So I think that
- 16:48Speaker 3: this is a game-changing spot for BYU, not just this year,
- 16:52Speaker 3: but as a program long-term.
- 16:53Speaker 1: The lingering idea of Martin coming back to join BYU
- 16:58Speaker 1: in a potential postseason push, that makes me think they've
- 17:01Speaker 1: got the highest playoff ceiling out of these Big 12 contenders.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But would you say Texas Tech or Utah takes that
- 17:06Speaker 1: crown instead?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I think that all three have had very different pathways
- 17:11Speaker 3: to get to where they are right now. All three
- 17:13Speaker 3: of them are top 11 in SP +, all three
- 17:15Speaker 3: are top 12 in the rankings. You know, for BYU,
- 17:18Speaker 3: they're a little bit more battle-tested. They have a really
- 17:20Speaker 3: good win against an Arizona team that I think should
- 17:22Speaker 3: be top 25. You know, Utah has been awesome. Like,
- 17:26Speaker 3: they've been perfect, essentially, but they haven't played anybody to
- 17:29Speaker 3: this point. And Texas Tech has the one big win
- 17:32Speaker 3: over Houston, but they've also probably looked the shakiest out
- 17:35Speaker 3: of all three of these teams overall.
- 17:36Speaker 2: In all of their other games.
- 17:37Speaker 3: So I think that BYU is the surest thing of
- 17:40Speaker 3: this group, I guess you could call it. You know,
- 17:43Speaker 3: I think though that Texas Tech might have the highest
- 17:45Speaker 3: upside and Utah might be the most dominant team of
- 17:48Speaker 3: the bunch. So right now I'd probably take Utah of that,
- 17:51Speaker 3: or sorry, I'd probably take BYU of that group, but
- 17:53Speaker 3: they're very close together.
- 17:55Speaker 4: I'd agree with that.
- 17:56Speaker 1: He's Shahan Jayaraja from CBS Sports. And yeah, it's an
- 18:00Speaker 1: awesome slate. Thank you so much for stopping by. We
- 18:02Speaker 1: didn't even cover half of it, but we've got to
- 18:03Speaker 1: get to a break. Thanks for stopping by.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 18:07Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back with more in a few
- 18:09Speaker 1: moments here on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Today, attending to some personal business. Nothing bad. Craig will
- 18:16Speaker 4: be back with us tomorrow.
- 18:17Speaker 1: For now, we've got plenty still to come over the
- 18:19Speaker 1: next two-plus hours. Coming up at 3.15, Jory Epstein from
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yahoo Sports, their senior NFL writer, will join us to
- 18:28Speaker 1: talk some pro football. We'll get her thoughts on the
- 18:30Speaker 1: Cowboys' addition of Mike Pettin to the staff. He'll be
- 18:34Speaker 1: brought in to join Christian Parker today. and help turn
- 18:38Speaker 1: things around for a Dallas defense that is still struggling
- 18:42Speaker 1: to get stopped, still struggling to get off the field
- 18:45Speaker 1: on third down. Of course, Petten has got connections with
- 18:48Speaker 1: both Brian Schottenheimer and Christian Parker. He gave Christian Parker
- 18:53Speaker 1: his first job in the NFL with the Green Bay
- 18:55Speaker 1: Packers back in 2019. Back when he was their defensive coordinator,
- 19:01Speaker 1: he brought in Christian Parker to work with their position groups. So,
- 19:06Speaker 1: It is a former NFL head coach joining Brian Schottenheimer's staff,
- 19:10Speaker 1: bringing in some experience as they try to turn things around.
- 19:13Speaker 4: We'll talk to Jory about them.
- 19:14Speaker 1: We'll talk about the Houston Texans move to go get
- 19:17Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison Jr. via trade and kind of talk a
- 19:20Speaker 1: little bit about both of those divisions and where each
- 19:23Speaker 1: of those teams stand. The NFC East, like we touched
- 19:27Speaker 1: on yesterday, not looking strong at the moment. The NFC,
- 19:31Speaker 1: excuse me, the AFC South and the Texans climb back
- 19:34Speaker 1: into it after getting some help from the, well, after
- 19:38Speaker 1: nearly getting some help from the Philadelphia Eagles in London.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Can they catch the Jacksonville Jaguars?
- 19:42Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 19:43Speaker 1: We'll discuss that with Jory. Then coming up later in
- 19:45Speaker 1: the four o'clock hour, we'll talk a lot more Longhorn football.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Here's some player reactions.
- 19:49Speaker 1: From the red river rivalry talk to cj vogel from
- 19:52Speaker 1: on texas football he'll weigh in on some of the
- 19:54Speaker 1: arch manning discourse that we've heard From around the world
- 19:57Speaker 1: of college football. Here today as well. And look ahead
- 20:00Speaker 1: to the Longhorns matchup. With the Florida Gators. We want
- 20:03Speaker 1: to hear from you. Over the last two hours of
- 20:06Speaker 1: this program as well. Two ways you can do that.
- 20:09Speaker 1: As always the text line.
- 20:11Speaker 4: 81530.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Text the word Texas. Followed by your question or comment.
- 20:15Speaker 1: CPAL says I like my fries crispy. In relation to
- 20:19Speaker 1: our inconceivable item. We had on the fry truck. That
- 20:22Speaker 1: caught on fire. Again luckily no one hurt.
- 20:24Speaker 4: But not.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Not a good day in the world of fast food,
- 20:29Speaker 1: junk food updates from that fry fire up in Utah. Luckily,
- 20:34Speaker 1: not a grease fire could have gotten even further out
- 20:36Speaker 1: of control there. So 81530, text the word Texas, followed
- 20:39Speaker 1: by your questions or your comments. You can also leave
- 20:42Speaker 1: us a voice message to get involved with the show.
- 20:46Speaker 1: All you have to do is download the iHeartRadio app,
- 20:48Speaker 1: search AM 1300 The Zone. You'll be listening to us
- 20:51Speaker 1: if you do. I suggest you save us as a preset.
- 20:53Speaker 1: That makes it even easier when you open the app.
- 20:55Speaker 1: You'll be one tap away. You won't have to search
- 20:58Speaker 1: the next time. Either way, you can tap the red
- 21:01Speaker 1: microphone button once you're listening to AM 1300 The Zone.
- 21:04Speaker 1: It gives you 30 seconds to leave a voice message,
- 21:07Speaker 1: a talkback message of up to 30 seconds. And I'm
- 21:12Speaker 1: going to give a hat tip to Dan Rubenstein and
- 21:15Speaker 1: Ty Hildenbrand on this one. They host the Solid Verbal
- 21:18Speaker 1: College Football Show. I've listened to them for a long time.
- 21:21Speaker 1: They're over on the iHeartRadio app for you as well.
- 21:25Speaker 1: This is a template that they've used on their show,
- 21:27Speaker 1: and I'm curious to kind of check the temperature on
- 21:30Speaker 1: Longhorn fans when it comes to this now. If you're
- 21:35Speaker 1: a Texas fan, I just want to know how you're
- 21:36Speaker 1: feeling right now coming off this loss in the Red
- 21:39Speaker 1: River rivalry. I'm a Texas fan, and I'm feeling blank.
- 21:44Speaker 1: We'll try and address those feelings, those questions. This is
- 21:47Speaker 1: a space to maybe talk about what's on your mind
- 21:51Speaker 1: as we continue to hope that the Longhorns are able
- 21:54Speaker 1: to turn the page from this loss to Oklahoma as
- 21:57Speaker 1: they prepare to host Florida and then welcome an even
- 22:02Speaker 1: higher ranked team, a top 10 team in the Ole
- 22:05Speaker 1: Miss Rebels here at DKR the next few weeks. We
- 22:08Speaker 1: want to see how you're feeling. We want to try
- 22:11Speaker 1: and answer any questions you might have. So Talkback feature,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I'm a Texas fan and I'm feeling blank. We can
- 22:17Speaker 1: extend that to other teams too. But very curious to
- 22:20Speaker 1: see what is at the top of fans' mind coming
- 22:23Speaker 1: off of the loss to Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry.
- 22:27Speaker 1: We'll hear what's on Trevor Goosby's mind, Justin Cryer's mind
- 22:32Speaker 1: a little later on in the program when we hear
- 22:34Speaker 1: from both of them. I'll tell you what was on
- 22:36Speaker 1: Sean McVay's mind after the Rams lost to the bills
- 22:39Speaker 1: last night in the Monday night football overtime thriller. It
- 22:44Speaker 1: was a tinge of regret. The bills win an instant
- 22:46Speaker 1: classic first half started slow. It's almost like both teams
- 22:50Speaker 1: waited for the baseball double header to wrap up. And
- 22:52Speaker 1: then the fireworks show began, um, Huge plays in all
- 22:57Speaker 1: three phases of the game to decide this back-and-forth game.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You had both offenses marching down the field to score
- 23:02Speaker 1: touchdown drives to force the overtime. The Rams managing the clock,
- 23:06Speaker 1: scoring with four seconds left, not giving Buffalo a chance
- 23:09Speaker 1: to retaliate.
- 23:10Speaker 4: They choose not to go for two.
- 23:12Speaker 1: That nearly paid off after Nate Landman punched the ball free,
- 23:15Speaker 1: able to strip James Cook, give the Rams an opportunity
- 23:19Speaker 1: to win the game in overtime. All they needed was
- 23:22Speaker 1: a field goal, but that field goal was blocked. It
- 23:25Speaker 1: was only the second walk-off field goal attempt blocked over
- 23:30Speaker 1: the last two seasons, according to NFL research. And both
- 23:33Speaker 1: of those have come against the Rams. The other one
- 23:36Speaker 1: came last year when Joshua Cardi's game-winning kick against the
- 23:39Speaker 1: Eagles was blocked in return for a touchdown by Jordan Davis. Now,
- 23:44Speaker 1: it rears its head for the Rams again, who were
- 23:46Speaker 1: really held back by their defense and special teams in
- 23:49Speaker 1: this game. Harrison Mevis' 48-yard potential game-winning kick was blocked.
- 23:54Speaker 1: The Bills took advantage, scoring five plays later on kicker
- 23:58Speaker 1: Tyler Bass's game winner. The Rams decided, though, to kick
- 24:02Speaker 1: it on third. Well, I should say this. They decided to.
- 24:08Speaker 1: kick it on third down and five, rather than trying
- 24:11Speaker 1: to get it closer. They had tried to draw the
- 24:13Speaker 1: Bills' defense offside after a couple of conservative play calls,
- 24:16Speaker 1: trying to preserve possession, kind of set that up. And
- 24:19Speaker 1: here's what Sean McVay had to say about the way
- 24:22Speaker 1: he handled the end of the game. You could tell
- 24:23Speaker 1: he has a lot of anger and regret about how
- 24:27Speaker 1: it unfolded.
- 24:28Speaker 6: You know, with our PAT field goal, not even close
- 24:31Speaker 6: to good enough, it cost us the game tonight. Yeah,
- 24:34Speaker 6: I'm going to evaluate everything.
- 24:37Speaker 2: With the third and five play, was there.
- 24:38Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what? If I would have.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I wish I would have had a better play
- 24:43Speaker 6: call and gone for it, got it a lot tighter.
- 24:45Speaker 6: I'm sick right now with myself, and I'm so proud
- 24:49Speaker 6: of that group. This is the tough part of sports,
- 24:53Speaker 6: but I'm proud of that team. I'm proud of the
- 24:55Speaker 6: way that we battled, and I'm sick that we came
- 24:57Speaker 6: up short. I'll be regretting kicking that and not having
- 25:03Speaker 6: a better call to be able to go for it
- 25:04Speaker 6: on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was,
- 25:07Speaker 6: and that's on me.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't stop there for McVay in terms of
- 25:12Speaker 1: the accountability, in terms of the raw kind of reactions
- 25:16Speaker 1: that he was coming out.
- 25:17Speaker 4: He's a pretty good interview, McVay.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I think he'll have a great, as I've said on
- 25:20Speaker 1: this show before, future in television whenever he decides to
- 25:24Speaker 1: go that route. But he might be coaching for a
- 25:26Speaker 1: very long time. Here's how he ended the press conference
- 25:29Speaker 1: in talking about what needs to be better.
- 25:32Speaker 6: This one is, uh, this is the one, this stings and, uh,
- 25:35Speaker 6: it's going to hurt, but we can't afford to let it, uh,
- 25:37Speaker 6: we can't let this team beat us twice. And we're
- 25:39Speaker 6: gonna have to regroup and reset ourselves. And it's been
- 25:42Speaker 6: a while since I've been this pissed after a game too.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Considering who you guys played and the circumstances.
- 25:48Speaker 6: No, there's no, none of it makes me feel good
- 25:50Speaker 6: right now. I'm proud of the effort, but none of,
- 25:52Speaker 6: none of it, none of how I feel, um, is
- 25:55Speaker 6: positive other than I'm proud of the resilience, the guts
- 25:59Speaker 6: that our team displayed, um, But there's no, you know,
- 26:03Speaker 6: I don't even know what you want to call it. But,
- 26:05Speaker 6: you know, congrats to the Bills.
- 26:07Speaker 5: And I'm excited about how we freaking move forward.
- 26:10Speaker 1: We're going to freaking move forward as well. It's hour
- 26:13Speaker 1: number two of the program. Those are some thoughts from
- 26:16Speaker 1: Sean McVay. In the next segment, we'll hear from Jerry
- 26:18Speaker 1: Jones as the Dallas Cowboys make some adjustments in this
- 26:22Speaker 1: NFL-heavy portion of the show.
- 26:24Speaker 4: We do want your thoughts, though, on college football as well.
- 26:28Speaker 1: You can text the word Texas followed by your questions
- 26:30Speaker 1: to 81530. And like I mentioned, leave us a talk back.
- 26:34Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio app. We've heard from a Red Raider fan.
- 26:37Speaker 1: We'll see how Longhorn fans are feeling coming up in
- 26:41Speaker 1: this last two hours of the show.
- 26:44Speaker 4: We've got lots more to talk about coming up.
- 26:48Speaker 1: A good college football slate, a baseball montage coming up
- 26:51Speaker 1: on the other side of this break, and then much
- 26:53Speaker 1: more on the NFL.
- 26:55Speaker 4: This is the Craig Way Show on 1300 The Zone.
- 27:09Speaker 1: New pitch. Breaking ball.
- 27:10Speaker 7: Lined in the center.
- 27:11Speaker 8: That's going to get down for a base hit.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Hamilton is in. Around third is Terang.
- 27:17Speaker 2: He will score.
- 27:18Speaker 4: It's a two-one single.
- 27:19Speaker 9: For Christian Yelich.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Oh, captain, my captain. The Brewers take the 3-2 lead.
- 27:26Speaker 10: With the Dodgers in relief, here's a fly to center
- 27:29Speaker 10: that's deep.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Going back.
- 27:30Speaker 7: His pot is turning.
- 27:31Speaker 8: Watching.
- 27:32Speaker 2: It's flying.
- 27:33Speaker 7: Goodbye.
- 27:35Speaker 11: We're tied.
- 27:37Speaker 4: William Contreras is third in the postseason.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And it hit the.
- 27:40Speaker 10: Center field batter's eye.
- 27:42Speaker 7: 4-4 game in the fifth.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Oh, baby, what a shot.
- 27:45Speaker 10: 2-2 to Rojas.
- 27:46Speaker 8: Perfection from Milwaukee.
- 27:48Speaker 7: And a 2-0 series.
- 27:53Speaker 8: Lead over the Dodgers.
- 28:02Speaker 10: He swings at the first pitch, hits one high, deep
- 28:05Speaker 10: to center field. This ball's got a chance.
- 28:08Speaker 12: Gone!
- 28:10Speaker 4: We are tied at two.
- 28:15Speaker 10: Patrick Bailey with his second postseason home run. A towering
- 28:22Speaker 10: blast to dead center. And Cleveland's two runs have come
- 28:27Speaker 10: via the long ball. Chase DeLauder, last inning. Patrick Bailey,
- 28:32Speaker 10: here in the seventh. And it's a 2-2 game.
- 28:38Speaker 7: The pitch.
- 28:39Speaker 10: Swung on a little looper into left. That'll get down
- 28:41Speaker 10: to base hit. Martinez around third. Here's the front of
- 28:45Speaker 10: the plate.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Not in time.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Head first slide.
- 28:47Speaker 5: He scores.
- 28:48Speaker 10: Throwback to first. Martinez gunned down after a big turn.
- 28:53Speaker 10: But he got the run home. Jose Ramirez with his
- 28:58Speaker 10: third hit of the night.
- 28:59Speaker 7: Yandy Diaz off the end of the bat.
- 29:02Speaker 2: This should do it.
- 29:06Speaker 5: How about the Guardians? Coming in hot.
- 29:09Speaker 8: A team that finds a way, and they find a
- 29:12Speaker 8: way to the win column in game.
- 29:15Speaker 7: One of this championship series.
- 29:17Speaker 8: Four consecutive wins in the postseason for the first time
- 29:21Speaker 8: since their World Series run a decade ago.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, quite the night of MLB postseason play.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Jake Herman back with you, filling in for Craig Wade.
- 29:34Speaker 1: This is hour number two of our show. We're with
- 29:36Speaker 1: you up until five o'clock here on Sports Radio. am
- 29:40Speaker 1: 1300 the zone the brewers scoring more runs last night
- 29:45Speaker 1: that you heard in those highlights called by lane grindle
- 29:49Speaker 1: and josh maurer as well as joe davis on the
- 29:51Speaker 1: fox tv call grindle and maurer the two Brewers Radio
- 29:55Speaker 1: Network broadcasters on WTMJ. And then you heard Tom Hamilton,
- 29:59Speaker 1: the longtime voice of the Cleveland Guardians, and Brian Anderson
- 30:03Speaker 1: on the TBS call for those highlights from the American
- 30:06Speaker 1: League Championship Series, where the Cleveland Guardians go on the road,
- 30:10Speaker 1: take a 1-0 lead. And now, in a moment, I'll
- 30:13Speaker 1: get to why I think they're in a pretty good
- 30:14Speaker 1: spot here in this series now against the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 30:17Speaker 4: But for Milwaukee, who, remember, was.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Just so, so stagnant offensively, in the National League Championship
- 30:24Speaker 1: Series against the Dodgers a year ago. They are scoring
- 30:27Speaker 1: runs at a great clip right now. And part of
- 30:31Speaker 1: that comes from grinding out at bats. Part of that
- 30:33Speaker 1: comes from using their speed. They were able to chase
- 30:36Speaker 1: Yoshinobu Yamamoto early on in the ballgame, ramping his pitch
- 30:42Speaker 1: count up into the high 70s in the third inning.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It was Yamamoto's shortest postseason start, excuse me, And it
- 30:50Speaker 1: was a big part of the reason the Brewers were
- 30:52Speaker 1: able to win the ball game. Yamamoto lasting just two
- 30:55Speaker 1: and two-thirds innings. He was forced to throw 75 pitches.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Jake Bowers at one point grinded out a double-digit pitch
- 31:03Speaker 1: at bat.
- 31:03Speaker 4: It lasted seven minutes.
- 31:05Speaker 1: It was part of a rally for Milwaukee in the
- 31:08Speaker 1: third inning when they turned a 2-1 deficit into a
- 31:11Speaker 1: 3-2 lead. You heard the call on the two-run single
- 31:14Speaker 1: for Christian Yelich. He gets off the schneid in terms
- 31:16Speaker 1: of playoff RBI the last time He had one of those,
- 31:20Speaker 1: was all the way back in 2018. So the captain
- 31:24Speaker 1: who you heard means so much to the Brewers, he
- 31:28Speaker 1: comes up with a big hit. William Contreras has been
- 31:31Speaker 1: arguably the best player in the series so far. He
- 31:34Speaker 1: was so good in the National League Division Series, including
- 31:37Speaker 1: that game-winning home run. in game one he was the
- 31:41Speaker 1: one who got them on the board kind of setting
- 31:43Speaker 1: the tone he is the the heartbeat in so many
- 31:45Speaker 1: ways for this Milwaukee Brewer team now it's the Dodgers
- 31:49Speaker 1: who are searching for offense they were held to just
- 31:52Speaker 1: three hits in game two everybody it seems like is
- 31:56Speaker 1: just searching for something at the plate right now Will
- 32:00Speaker 1: Smith is just one for 23 in the playoffs Shohei
- 32:03Speaker 1: Otani is three for 20, and the three hits are
- 32:07Speaker 1: all singles. There's some discussion in the Dodgers dugout about
- 32:12Speaker 1: potentially moving him lower in the lineup, potentially sitting him.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Rookie Josue DiPaola might be the top candidate to take
- 32:19Speaker 1: Otani's place as a DH in the lineup. Anytime you
- 32:22Speaker 1: see Shohei showing bunt against a relief pitcher, it's a
- 32:28Speaker 1: sign that he is not quite right at the plate
- 32:31Speaker 1: because of the injuries that have hampered him. He just
- 32:33Speaker 1: hasn't been able to find the same rhythm. He's got
- 32:35Speaker 1: one RBI in the last two months. He's got just
- 32:39Speaker 1: one homer since August 18th.
- 32:41Speaker 7: So it is.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Been a long time since Shohei Ohtani has looked like
- 32:47Speaker 1: himself at the plate you know the help has something
- 32:49Speaker 1: to do with it you know he's capable of breaking
- 32:52Speaker 1: out and totally changing a series I mean he was
- 32:54Speaker 1: last year's NLCS MVP but that's something to watch going
- 32:58Speaker 1: forward in this series what do the Dodgers decide to
- 33:00Speaker 1: do with Ohtani could he potentially sit in game three
- 33:04Speaker 1: as the Dodgers search for an offensive spark meanwhile I
- 33:07Speaker 1: told you the Guardians were in a good spot How
- 33:10Speaker 1: about this? They were down 0-2 to the Chicago White Sox,
- 33:12Speaker 1: win three elimination games in a row. Now they steal
- 33:16Speaker 1: game one on the road without Gavin Williams. They beat
- 33:20Speaker 1: Drew Rasmussen, clawing back on Patrick Bailey's game-tying home run
- 33:24Speaker 1: in the seventh, breaking through with that.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Run-scoring burst to end the ballgame.
- 33:30Speaker 1: They were up 4-3 going into the ninth, had the
- 33:32Speaker 1: three insurance runs get tacked on. Now they get to
- 33:35Speaker 1: send Parker Messick, to the hill and he had one
- 33:39Speaker 1: good start one shaky start in the ALDS against the
- 33:42Speaker 1: White Sox but he's a tough matchup for the Rays
- 33:46Speaker 1: who are not as dominant against lefties as they are
- 33:50Speaker 1: righties they were just 26th in OPS plus against lefties
- 33:54Speaker 1: this year a lineup that was otherwise one of baseball's
- 33:57Speaker 1: most potent, most consistent, doesn't matter who was on the mound.
- 34:01Speaker 4: He pitched really well twice.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Against the Rays this season, and he will be on
- 34:08Speaker 1: the mound for Cleveland as they look to go on
- 34:11Speaker 1: top 2-0 in game number two of that series tonight.
- 34:16Speaker 1: He'll be opposed on the mound by Freddie Peralta for
- 34:20Speaker 1: Tampa Bay.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Big spot for Freddie, the righty.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Who will be facing a Guardians team that has really
- 34:29Speaker 1: broken out in a big way offensively, led, of course,
- 34:32Speaker 1: by Jose Ramirez. Coming up, we're going to shift gears
- 34:35Speaker 1: back to NFL football when Jory Epstein from Yahoo Sports
- 34:39Speaker 1: joins us talking Texans, Cowboys, and much, much more. Glad
- 34:43Speaker 1: to have you with us on this Tuesday afternoon edition
- 34:45Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The
- 34:48Speaker 1: Zone and the free iHeartRadio app. We continue talking to
- 34:52Speaker 1: NFL next on this Tuesday afternoon edition of the program.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Jake Herman in for Craig Way. Happy to welcome our
- 35:00Speaker 1: next guest. She is a senior NFL reporter over at
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yahoo Sports, Jory Epstein. Hey, Jory, thanks for making the
- 35:06Speaker 1: time for us. And what a ball game last night
- 35:08Speaker 1: to tee us off here.
- 35:10Speaker 13: Absolutely great to be on with you, Jake. And yes,
- 35:13Speaker 13: that was quite the game. Yet another overtime for the NFL,
- 35:16Speaker 13: who loves their one-score games, and they love their overtime.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we've seen a lot of those.
- 35:20Speaker 1: It was a marathon NFL week, like Mike Tirico pointed
- 35:23Speaker 1: out on Sunday Night Football, from the London game bleeding
- 35:26Speaker 1: into the early window yesterday, and then overtime in both
- 35:30Speaker 1: the Falcons-Ravens game, and then last night between the Bills
- 35:34Speaker 1: and the Rams. I'm curious, obviously these are two teams
- 35:37Speaker 1: that a lot of folks had penciled in as Super
- 35:39Speaker 1: Bowl contenders yesterday, If we learned anything meaningful in your
- 35:43Speaker 1: view about either side from what we saw out there
- 35:46Speaker 1: last night.
- 35:47Speaker 13: Yeah, we did have to make picks at Yahoo Sports,
- 35:49Speaker 13: which I don't love picks. I'm always like, isn't my
- 35:51Speaker 13: job to inform rather than predict? But we have to
- 35:53Speaker 13: do them for work. And I did pick the Bills
- 35:55Speaker 13: and the Rams at the beginning of the season to
- 35:57Speaker 13: be the Super Bowl team. So I still think that's possible.
- 36:01Speaker 13: But I think we saw from the Bills that Josh
- 36:03Speaker 13: Allen is as much of a threat as he's ever been.
- 36:05Speaker 13: I get that he's sometimes going to have the turnovers.
- 36:08Speaker 13: But he's had a rushing touchdown in every single game.
- 36:10Speaker 13: He's got eight and five and more than 50 rushing
- 36:13Speaker 13: yards beyond what he had done this season against a
- 36:15Speaker 13: Rams team that I thought looked a little stronger defensively
- 36:18Speaker 13: in some of their earlier performances than they did against
- 36:21Speaker 13: Josh Allen and James Cook last night. I think when
- 36:24Speaker 13: you get and then you look at what they were
- 36:25Speaker 13: doing on defense and special teams, I mean, to block
- 36:28Speaker 13: that kick late. Yes, the Rams were having special teams concerns,
- 36:31Speaker 13: but it really was a pretty complete performance from the Bills,
- 36:35Speaker 13: recognizing that, yes, they had the fumble in overtime, but
- 36:37Speaker 13: it was kind of like everyone was stepping up to
- 36:39Speaker 13: make the move when they most needed to. With the Rams,
- 36:42Speaker 13: I still think that the Rams are extremely talented, particularly
- 36:45Speaker 13: on offense, and that once they get back to full
- 36:48Speaker 13: strength with their roster guys like Miles Garrett coming back,
- 36:52Speaker 13: that they could be the most dangerous if they get
- 36:55Speaker 13: to the playoffs completely. But we're kind of getting to
- 36:56Speaker 13: this point where you have to wonder, is there going
- 36:58Speaker 13: to be too much margin of error? Like, are they
- 37:00Speaker 13: going to make it to the playoffs?
- 37:03Speaker 1: Especially with that crowded division, it's a question that's worth
- 37:06Speaker 1: bringing up. And, you know, we're going to talk in
- 37:08Speaker 1: a moment about the Texans and the Cowboys who each
- 37:11Speaker 1: face their own perilous path to the playoffs. I mean,
- 37:15Speaker 1: the NFC East, I pointed it out, nobody won last
- 37:19Speaker 1: week and two teams played one another. It says something
- 37:21Speaker 1: about where the division is. The Dallas Cowboys, and you've
- 37:25Speaker 1: done some great reporting on this, Jory, having covered them
- 37:27Speaker 1: in the past and obviously continuing to cover the league.
- 37:30Speaker 1: this season they're willing to invest in in whatever it
- 37:33Speaker 1: takes to fix this defense and the latest chapter in
- 37:36Speaker 1: that story is bringing in mike pettin to help out
- 37:39Speaker 1: christian parker on the defensive side of the football what
- 37:41Speaker 1: did you make of this move and um how do
- 37:43Speaker 1: you think this potentially changes the cowboys outlook in the
- 37:47Speaker 1: nfc east yeah i think this.
- 37:50Speaker 13: Move makes a lot of sense mike penn is someone
- 37:52Speaker 13: who previously had hired christian parker under him with the
- 37:55Speaker 13: green bay packers he's also worked with head coach and
- 37:58Speaker 13: offensive play caller brian schottenheimer more than a decade ago
- 38:01Speaker 13: back when they were with the New York Jets. So
- 38:03Speaker 13: he's got a lot of familiarity with the staff. And
- 38:06Speaker 13: usually you see some sort of defensive, offensive assistant role
- 38:09Speaker 13: on coaching staffs. I mean, Cowboys team owner and general
- 38:12Speaker 13: manager Jerry Jones talked about this on radio today and said, look,
- 38:16Speaker 13: we wanted to do this before the season. He wasn't
- 38:18Speaker 13: available then. Now he is. It makes a lot of sense.
- 38:21Speaker 13: And so I think it's more about supporting Christian Parker
- 38:24Speaker 13: than it is about taking out the power from him.
- 38:26Speaker 13: I mean, we've seen other teams across the league, like
- 38:29Speaker 13: the Denver Broncos with Sean Payton, as well as the
- 38:32Speaker 13: Texans with D'Amico Ryans, take that play calling away from
- 38:35Speaker 13: their coordinator and give it to their head coach, the
- 38:37Speaker 13: Broncos on offense and the Texans on defense. And so
- 38:39Speaker 13: to me, you do this, then Christian Parker is also
- 38:41Speaker 13: apparently going to be coaching up from the booth now
- 38:44Speaker 13: rather than the sideline. And you say, And let's give
- 38:46Speaker 13: you a little bit more. The last thing that's worth
- 38:48Speaker 13: noting is that, yes, Christian Parker is a first-time play caller.
- 38:51Speaker 13: It takes a little bit of time. The Cowboys also
- 38:54Speaker 13: haven't been a 3-4 defense in like 13 years. And
- 38:57Speaker 13: so this is not just the new players. It's not
- 38:59Speaker 13: just the first-time play callers. It's also the fact that
- 39:02Speaker 13: it usually takes, and I wrote about this over the offseason,
- 39:05Speaker 13: a couple years to be able to get your personnel
- 39:07Speaker 13: ready for a completely new system. It's not just new
- 39:09Speaker 13: plays in the same type of system. So I think
- 39:11Speaker 13: we have to keep that in mind.
- 39:12Speaker 1: There are new personnel, and then there are also the
- 39:15Speaker 1: personnel having to fill in for the Cowboys. I mean,
- 39:18Speaker 1: the boatload of injuries they've had on the defensive side
- 39:21Speaker 1: plays a big role in that kind of transition period
- 39:23Speaker 1: you're talking about as well. So here are the Cowboys
- 39:26Speaker 1: at two and three. The Giants, despite that unconvincing time.
- 39:30Speaker 1: tie in Washington, lead the division at three, one and one.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Do you lean a certain way in the NFC East
- 39:35Speaker 1: right now as to who ends up on top of
- 39:37Speaker 1: one of the weaker divisions in football?
- 39:40Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm still not that afraid of the Giants if
- 39:42Speaker 13: I'm anyone in the NFL, but they're winning games they
- 39:46Speaker 13: shouldn't win, tying games they should have lost. So I
- 39:49Speaker 13: don't know that I'm really convinced. I still think that
- 39:51Speaker 13: the Cowboys and the Eagles have more talent. I actually
- 39:53Speaker 13: think Jaden Daniels in Washington played quite well this week,
- 39:56Speaker 13: and he was rushing quite well before they had their
- 39:58Speaker 13: late game gap in overtime. And so I think it's
- 40:01Speaker 13: pretty wide open. The Giants clearly have shown that they're
- 40:04Speaker 13: not making some of the errors, but I mean, they
- 40:06Speaker 13: still had that overtime fumble that led to Washington having
- 40:08Speaker 13: the chance. So I would say everyone's kind of a mess,
- 40:11Speaker 13: which means they're all still in it.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah, that's well put.
- 40:14Speaker 1: We're talking with Jory Epstein from Yahoo Sports, where she's
- 40:17Speaker 1: a senior NFL reporter.
- 40:20Speaker 4: And we had a big trade.
- 40:22Speaker 1: You don't see trades like this in the NFL too
- 40:24Speaker 1: often with the Texans sending a second round pick as
- 40:27Speaker 1: well as a six for seventh round swap over to
- 40:30Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals to take on Marvin Harrison Jr. What
- 40:34Speaker 1: have you heard around the league in terms of reactions
- 40:36Speaker 1: to this?
- 40:38Speaker 13: Yeah, it was interesting. I was at the Browns Jets
- 40:40Speaker 13: game when this went down and I went into the
- 40:42Speaker 13: Jets locker room afterwards and talked to Garrett Wilson and
- 40:44Speaker 13: So I'm like, okay, Garrett, you are also a receiver
- 40:47Speaker 13: who's drafted top 10. You played with Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 40:49Speaker 13: at Ohio State and you played with CJ Stroud at
- 40:52Speaker 13: Ohio State. Like, what do you think about this? And
- 40:54Speaker 13: he said, I don't know if I'm allowed to say this,
- 40:56Speaker 13: but I was praying that something would happen. I was
- 40:58Speaker 13: praying for him to have something like this. And I
- 41:00Speaker 13: think when you look at it, the value is a
- 41:02Speaker 13: little rich for my liking. I talked to other teams
- 41:04Speaker 13: around the league who said they would not have given
- 41:06Speaker 13: up anything higher than a day three pick. So a
- 41:08Speaker 13: fourth or fifth round at the highest, knowing that the
- 41:11Speaker 13: Cardinals kept asking for a second round pick. That said,
- 41:15Speaker 13: I think if there's a team that it's most likely
- 41:17Speaker 13: Marvin Harrison Jr. will revive his career at, it is
- 41:20Speaker 13: the Texans with CJ Stroud and having the chemistry they
- 41:23Speaker 13: already had together in college. And Garrett was talking me
- 41:26Speaker 13: through how they're both very cerebral and really connect on that.
- 41:29Speaker 13: And so I think from an on and off field standpoint,
- 41:31Speaker 13: it could be a really good mix. And I get
- 41:34Speaker 13: why you'd want to take a flat. I mean, it's
- 41:36Speaker 13: not really a flyer. You gave up a second round pick.
- 41:38Speaker 13: I get why you would want to take a chance
- 41:40Speaker 13: to upgrade your roster. But if you're the Texans, you're
- 41:43Speaker 13: still one in four. You've only beat the Titans who
- 41:46Speaker 13: have beat nobody. So you have no wins against any
- 41:48Speaker 13: team that has beat anyone. And you just gave up
- 41:51Speaker 13: a second round pick in the 2027 draft, which is
- 41:53Speaker 13: supposed to be very talent rich. So I would say
- 41:56Speaker 13: over the whole, it kind of is a desperation move.
- 41:59Speaker 13: But could they revive his career?
- 42:00Speaker 5: It's possible.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you think about the fit joining C.J. Stroud,
- 42:04Speaker 1: who I know has come into the season with a
- 42:07Speaker 1: lot to prove, obviously playing without the contract. That was
- 42:09Speaker 1: the big offseason conversation with Nick Casario and C.J. Stroud,
- 42:13Speaker 1: both kind of acknowledging that it had to be better
- 42:16Speaker 1: than what they put out on the field in 2025,
- 42:18Speaker 1: in my opinion, wasting one of the better defensive seasons
- 42:21Speaker 1: we've seen in the NFL in a long time. But
- 42:23Speaker 1: I feel like this Texans passing game and offense as
- 42:27Speaker 1: a whole under Nick Cayley, while they've struggled to run it,
- 42:29Speaker 1: I feel like Stroud's played better this season so far.
- 42:33Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm glad you pointed that out, Jake, because I
- 42:35Speaker 13: included that in my article, this idea of like, just
- 42:37Speaker 13: because they're losing doesn't mean CJ Stroud is playing poorly.
- 42:40Speaker 13: He's completed 64.3% of his passes, six touchdowns, no interceptions,
- 42:45Speaker 13: like 1400 yards, another rushing touchdown. I mean, he's been
- 42:48Speaker 13: pretty efficient and he's been doing this without most of
- 42:51Speaker 13: his receivers. You have the Jaden Higgins ACL chair. You
- 42:54Speaker 13: have Nico Collins suffering the hamstring strain. Tank Dell hasn't
- 42:58Speaker 13: come back from injured reserve yet. So he really has
- 43:00Speaker 13: had a pretty shallow group. And to that point, I
- 43:03Speaker 13: would say the Texans need to understand what they have
- 43:06Speaker 13: in CJ Stroud to understand, do they want to give
- 43:08Speaker 13: this guy an extension, especially given the massive price tag
- 43:12Speaker 13: on quarterbacks you're extending? And so understanding what he looks
- 43:15Speaker 13: like with at least some degree of a compliment of weapons,
- 43:18Speaker 13: even if he's still going to have a lot of
- 43:19Speaker 13: injured guys, is a valuable lesson to learn for your
- 43:22Speaker 13: team building.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I hadn't thought about it that way. You're surrounding
- 43:25Speaker 1: him with more talent. You are still evaluating every day
- 43:29Speaker 1: what his future is, even as we watch this season
- 43:32Speaker 1: kind of get thrown into doubt. I mean, what's gone
- 43:34Speaker 1: wrong in your mind for the Texans defense? This was
- 43:37Speaker 1: supposed to be an elite unit, and they've had chances
- 43:39Speaker 1: to close out ballgames and haven't been able to do it.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I'm curious if you're seeing anything specific there. on that
- 43:44Speaker 1: front for D'Amico, Ryans, and crew?
- 43:46Speaker 13: Yeah, it's really surprising because, I mean, I had someone
- 43:50Speaker 13: ask me today who I was talking to, well, why
- 43:51Speaker 13: wouldn't D'Amico have just called the defense all along when
- 43:53Speaker 13: he's so good at it? And I'm like, okay, but
- 43:55Speaker 13: Matt Burke was calling the defense last year when they
- 43:57Speaker 13: were playing so well. So they had a success in
- 43:59Speaker 13: the past. I mean, it's a good question. I think
- 44:02Speaker 13: sometimes you can see little mistakes spiral. So I don't
- 44:05Speaker 13: know that it's one single thing, but definitely this is
- 44:07Speaker 13: a defense that I mean, struggled against the pass. The
- 44:11Speaker 13: run has not been a huge issue for them, but
- 44:13Speaker 13: you really need to be able to be more effective
- 44:15Speaker 13: against the pass.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see that Texans defense try and adjust the
- 44:19Speaker 1: second half of the season. They take on a Jacksonville
- 44:22Speaker 1: Jaguars team next week that.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Might have some issues up front.
- 44:26Speaker 1: So we'll see if Will Anderson's able to feast on
- 44:28Speaker 1: some of the offensive line injuries that the Jags picked
- 44:31Speaker 1: up in London. Okay, five weeks into the season, we're
- 44:34Speaker 1: talking with Jory Epstein from Yahoo Sports for just a
- 44:36Speaker 1: couple more minutes here. What's the biggest story in the
- 44:39Speaker 1: NFL right now?
- 44:41Speaker 13: Yeah, it's funny. I think there's a sense of recency bias,
- 44:43Speaker 13: but what feels like the biggest story to me right
- 44:45Speaker 13: now is the game management across the NFL. We see
- 44:48Speaker 13: the commanders and how they bowl the game when they
- 44:50Speaker 13: don't get lined up to kick the field goal, much
- 44:52Speaker 13: less to make the field goal. You see the Cowboys
- 44:55Speaker 13: at the end of their game in Rio against the
- 44:57Speaker 13: Baltimore Ravens only, I mean, allow enough time for Lamar
- 45:00Speaker 13: Jackson to make that final pass to lose on the
- 45:02Speaker 13: field goal. And everyone's saying, well, it's the decision-making and
- 45:05Speaker 13: head coach Brian Schottenheimer saying, I made the wrong decision.
- 45:08Speaker 13: And then the Philadelphia Eagles do the opposite this week
- 45:10Speaker 13: in London against the Jaguars, and they also lose. And
- 45:13Speaker 13: so there's kind of all of these questions of, is
- 45:15Speaker 13: it the execution? Is it the decision-making? And it kind
- 45:18Speaker 13: of reminds me how much goes right on every single
- 45:20Speaker 13: NFL play, which I know that's kind of like an
- 45:22Speaker 13: annoyingly rose-colored glasses thing to say, but it's crazy how
- 45:26Speaker 13: much work needs to go into all of this. So
- 45:27Speaker 13: I would say situational football, it's a little bit trite,
- 45:30Speaker 13: but when I go around to my training camp tour,
- 45:32Speaker 13: I tend to feel like, oh, everyone wants to just
- 45:34Speaker 13: tell me they're practicing situational football. And then you get
- 45:37Speaker 13: into the season and you're really like, well, maybe they
- 45:40Speaker 13: actually do need to be practicing this. And then the
- 45:42Speaker 13: other thing I'll say is Patrick Mahomes coming back at
- 45:45Speaker 13: the level he came back from his injury, doing what
- 45:47Speaker 13: he's done, getting the Chiefs to 4-0. I mean, it's
- 45:50Speaker 13: so impressive. So I know obviously he's got his Texas
- 45:53Speaker 13: college ties. I don't think we should stop taking, I
- 45:55Speaker 13: don't think we should take for granted what Patrick Mahomes
- 45:58Speaker 13: is doing and the fact that when he had that injury,
- 46:00Speaker 13: there was questions.
- 46:00Speaker 5: About could he do that again?
- 46:02Speaker 1: And it's easy to forget when you're watching Josh Allen
- 46:04Speaker 1: play on what feels like a whole other level last night.
- 46:07Speaker 1: But Mahomes and Ken Walker, that offense looks like it's
- 46:10Speaker 1: found some of its swagger back, even with the injury
- 46:12Speaker 1: that Rasheed Rice has picked up.
- 46:14Speaker 4: Okay, quick hitter here.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Bigger surprise, the Vikings at 5-0 or the Chargers at 0-5?
- 46:21Speaker 13: Chargers at 0-5. I mean, the Vikings still need to
- 46:23Speaker 13: figure out their offense, but with Brian Flores' defense, you
- 46:26Speaker 13: always have such a high ceiling. I thought this Mike McDaniel,
- 46:30Speaker 13: Justin Herbert, pairing was going to work better and I
- 46:32Speaker 13: get that they've had a lot of a really tough
- 46:35Speaker 13: schedule but 0-5 is just.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Unbelievable yeah I'm pretty surprised by that too I picked
- 46:41Speaker 1: them on this show to win the division and that's
- 46:44Speaker 1: the last time we'll mention that for a few months
- 46:47Speaker 1: one thing that we've mentioned too much early in the
- 46:49Speaker 1: season you had some good reporting on this are the
- 46:51Speaker 1: penalty flags being up around football we saw I think
- 46:54Speaker 1: 25 or 26 more flags last night even before overtime
- 46:58Speaker 1: and Is this the new norm, 200 penalty yards per game?
- 47:01Speaker 4: Is something off right now?
- 47:03Speaker 1: Are we seeing kind of a bug or a new
- 47:05Speaker 1: feature of NFL football games being this flag heavy?
- 47:09Speaker 13: Yeah, well put. And it depends who you ask. In
- 47:11Speaker 13: the league, different people have different opinions. There are definitely
- 47:13Speaker 13: some teams I'm talking to who are like, I don't know,
- 47:16Speaker 13: these officials, the league was trying to really emphasize accountability
- 47:20Speaker 13: during the collective bargaining agreement negotiation this offseason. Maybe we're
- 47:24Speaker 13: seeing kind of the impact of this. You have other
- 47:26Speaker 13: people say, well, it's early in the season. A lot
- 47:28Speaker 13: of players aren't playing in preseason. You're going to have
- 47:30Speaker 13: sloppiness early in the season. It tends to get figured out.
- 47:33Speaker 13: And then there's also an element of going into this week,
- 47:36Speaker 13: and I haven't checked the numbers coming out of this week,
- 47:39Speaker 13: delay of game and false start penalties were at 10-year highs,
- 47:42Speaker 13: which is notable not because it's the only flag being thrown,
- 47:45Speaker 13: but those are not like officials all of a sudden
- 47:48Speaker 13: saying that everything is DPI or nothing is DPI. That's
- 47:51Speaker 13: really more of a pre-snap. operational things. So I think
- 47:54Speaker 13: there's a couple of things and new play callers. So
- 47:57Speaker 13: I do think it's going to even back out in October, November,
- 47:59Speaker 13: and December, but we've already had significant tension between officials
- 48:02Speaker 13: and players and coaches. So we'll see if it gets
- 48:05Speaker 13: even down in time to kind of cool that a little.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Yeah, feels like an all-time high in terms of tension
- 48:10Speaker 1: and certainly in terms of flags making for a choppy product.
- 48:13Speaker 1: But I'm glad you brought out the kind of distinction
- 48:15Speaker 1: there on the pre-snap penalties. Unlike Dan Quinn, I know
- 48:19Speaker 1: you are on the clock, so I won't lose track
- 48:22Speaker 1: of time.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Love the intel.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much for stopping by and joining us, Jory.
- 48:25Speaker 1: And yeah, really appreciate the time.
- 48:28Speaker 13: Jake, great to be on with you. Talk to you soon.
- 48:30Speaker 1: That's Jory Epstein, senior NFL reporter with Yahoo Sports. We're
- 48:34Speaker 1: back with more NFL talk, including some sound bites from
- 48:37Speaker 1: Jerry Jones here on AM 1300 The Zone. Rolling it
- 48:45Speaker 1: back with one of Central Texas' own Silverada here on
- 48:49Speaker 1: a Texan Tuesday where our return cuts include the iconic
- 48:53Speaker 1: Willie Nelson, which we heard earlier on. beginning of our
- 48:56Speaker 1: segment with jory epstein thank you to jory for joining
- 48:59Speaker 1: us to talk some nfl football a moment ago and
- 49:02Speaker 1: you heard her mention jerry jones had his radio appearance
- 49:06Speaker 1: with our friends up in dallas at 105.3 the fan
- 49:08Speaker 1: we're going to bring you a couple of those cuts
- 49:10Speaker 1: now jerry addressing the mike pettin hire the defense and
- 49:15Speaker 1: some of the coaching changes what those might look like
- 49:18Speaker 1: first though he was asked about his opinion on the
- 49:21Speaker 1: employee the team employee in the tunnel that went viral
- 49:25Speaker 1: on thursday night telling dac prescott his performance was embarrassing
- 49:30Speaker 1: or shouting it within his earshot at least and jerry's
- 49:33Speaker 1: answer a little surprising on this.
- 49:36Speaker 14: I didn't pay a lot of attention to it. It
- 49:39Speaker 14: doesn't impact me at all. The driver in question was
- 49:44Speaker 14: not an employee, but feds can express themselves and should
- 49:50Speaker 14: express themselves. I love it for them, too. Whether he
- 49:54Speaker 14: was our employee or not, he was a fan, so
- 49:57Speaker 14: it sounds like. So I'm for our fans expressing themselves.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Turns out it was an employee working for a third-party contractor.
- 50:05Speaker 1: But Jerry Jones kind of took a different stance on
- 50:09Speaker 1: it and kind of defended his ability to speak out,
- 50:12Speaker 1: which I thought was interesting. Somebody in the tunnel shouting
- 50:16Speaker 1: at Dak Prescott after a loss, maybe not necessarily the
- 50:19Speaker 1: time and the place.
- 50:20Speaker 4: On the other side, you can understand Jerry's point of
- 50:23Speaker 4: view on it.
- 50:23Speaker 1: He was asked about the state of the defense in
- 50:26Speaker 1: light of bringing in Mike Pettin, who will help out
- 50:29Speaker 1: Christian Parker. taking on a big-time role to try and
- 50:32Speaker 1: turn things around for the Cowboys' defense?
- 50:35Speaker 14: Well, I know what we put into it, some of
- 50:40Speaker 14: the tactic, if you will, strategy implementation that we've done.
- 50:51Speaker 14: and I have a lot of confidence that we're going
- 50:53Speaker 14: in that direction in the right way. I'm obviously disappointed
- 50:58Speaker 14: in our results so far, but I think that we're
- 51:06Speaker 14: a long way down the road. I had mentioned after
- 51:09Speaker 14: the game that we were back to square one. I
- 51:12Speaker 14: really probably think that we're better off than that, but
- 51:18Speaker 14: we are back to square one relative to what it
- 51:22Speaker 14: looks like at this point relative to last year. But
- 51:25Speaker 14: I think that to answer your question, we've made some
- 51:28Speaker 14: big headway. We've just this week added Mike Patton to
- 51:36Speaker 14: our coaching staff, and that was something that we would
- 51:41Speaker 14: have done had we had.
- 51:42Speaker 7: The opportunity earlier.
- 51:44Speaker 14: And he'll be a good addition in working there with
- 51:47Speaker 14: Coach Parker to get this defense going in the right track.
- 51:51Speaker 7: For the games.
- 51:52Speaker 1: Jerry Jones with some sound bites earlier today with RJ
- 51:56Speaker 1: and Sean up in Dallas, 105.3 The Fan. One more
- 51:58Speaker 1: from Jerry, and that is with Mike Pettin being introduced
- 52:02Speaker 1: to the defense now, is he worried at all about
- 52:04Speaker 1: there being, so to speak, too many cooks in the
- 52:07Speaker 1: kitchen when it comes to the voice in the helmet
- 52:11Speaker 1: that gets things turned around, the voice in practice, trying
- 52:13Speaker 1: to turn this defense from one of the worst in
- 52:16Speaker 1: football into a unit that can help them win the division?
- 52:19Speaker 14: Well, I think you sound like Don Shulam. Don Shula,
- 52:23Speaker 14: the great Don Shula, several years ago, he said, you're
- 52:27Speaker 14: sitting here with all these coaches.
- 52:28Speaker 7: When do you have time to coach.
- 52:30Speaker 14: If you're the head coach? All you're doing is coaching
- 52:33Speaker 14: the coaches. And that was done. And so this is
- 52:37Speaker 14: a debate that goes on quite a bit as to
- 52:42Speaker 14: the size, the numbers of coaching staff, if you're looking
- 52:48Speaker 14: at it from the standpoint of, let's say, the head coach.
- 52:51Speaker 14: Even in that fact, in the case of the coordinators,
- 52:55Speaker 14: they've got multiple coaches that they, in essence, have to coach.
- 53:00Speaker 14: But it certainly has worked and works for when the
- 53:06Speaker 14: champ is over, most of the clubs have comparable numbers
- 53:10Speaker 14: of coaches on their staffs. And people do win the
- 53:14Speaker 14: championship with it. So that's where we are. You can't
- 53:17Speaker 14: say it doesn't work. But it does involve the coordination
- 53:22Speaker 14: of quite a few people to coach it.
- 53:24Speaker 4: It's a Cowboys defense that's searching a little bit.
- 53:26Speaker 1: CBS Sports reporting they had a players-only meeting after this
- 53:30Speaker 1: change was made, where they kind of came out with
- 53:32Speaker 1: the conclusion that these problems are on them.
- 53:34Speaker 4: DeMarvian Overshawn said as much with the media.
- 53:37Speaker 1: It's a defense that statistically has performed very poorly in
- 53:42Speaker 1: the NFL in terms of points allowed. They're 26th. Passing
- 53:45Speaker 1: touchdowns allowed, 29th. Yards per carry allowed, 29th. Third down efficiency,
- 53:50Speaker 1: dead last. Red zone efficiency, 25th. they've allowed at least
- 53:54Speaker 1: 20 points in each of their first five games and
- 53:58Speaker 1: one of those games occurred against the undrafted rookie quarterback
- 54:04Speaker 1: for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Jalen Daniels who made
- 54:07Speaker 1: his second career start his first road start and really
- 54:09Speaker 1: it was Bucky Irving who torched them just as much
- 54:12Speaker 1: as Daniels did in that ball game Joey Porter Jr.
- 54:16Speaker 1: the new signing they brought in at uh cornerback via
- 54:19Speaker 1: trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was unable to play
- 54:23Speaker 1: a late scratch due to its stomach illness that he
- 54:26Speaker 1: picked up before the game started. So the Cowboys searching
- 54:29Speaker 1: to regroup in a lot of different ways, and they
- 54:33Speaker 1: finally get an extended week of rest to be able
- 54:36Speaker 1: to do so. Their matchup this week, the Dallas Cowboys,
- 54:40Speaker 1: is on the road in Green Bay against a resurgent
- 54:43Speaker 1: Packers team who beat Tyson Bajan and the Caleb Williams-less
- 54:47Speaker 1: Bears 31-7. the team that ended their season a year ago,
- 54:52Speaker 1: coming into Lambeau Field where the scene was very different
- 54:54Speaker 1: a few weeks ago. They were booed, losing to Michael
- 54:57Speaker 1: Penix and the Atlanta Falcons in lopsided fashion a couple
- 55:00Speaker 1: weeks back, but.
- 55:01Speaker 4: That's the NFL.
- 55:02Speaker 1: You're only as good as your last couple weeks, and
- 55:05Speaker 1: the Packers at 3-2 now, despite having some issues they've
- 55:11Speaker 1: been able to have some big plays offensively Christian Watson
- 55:14Speaker 1: Matthew Golden combining to be a nice tandem last week
- 55:16Speaker 1: the first time they showed life as a running game
- 55:19Speaker 1: on the ground but we'll see it's not a Packers
- 55:22Speaker 1: offense that's been lighting the world on fire particularly not
- 55:25Speaker 1: when it comes to rushing they've just been able to
- 55:27Speaker 1: take the ball away from their opponents it'll be an
- 55:30Speaker 1: interesting matchup Sunday night at Lambeau Field later this week
- 55:33Speaker 1: on the program you'll hear Brian Schottenheimer previewing that from
- 55:36Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys perspective But coming up next, we will
- 55:40Speaker 1: talk a little more about the American League Championship Series,
- 55:44Speaker 1: Game 2 tonight, the only real pro sports show in
- 55:48Speaker 1: town when it comes to things you can put on
- 55:51Speaker 1: the tv tonight when you get home if you're listening
- 55:53Speaker 1: to us leaving work right now we'll also have a
- 55:56Speaker 1: couple more things coming up regarding longhorn football and we'll
- 56:00Speaker 1: hear from vick schaefer in the final hour and a
- 56:02Speaker 1: quarter of today's program we're glad to have you with
- 56:05Speaker 1: us here on sports radio am 1300 the zone and
- 56:08Speaker 1: the iheart radio app we welcome your texts at 81530
- 56:11Speaker 1: text the word texas followed by your question or comment
- 56:14Speaker 1: We'll get to those as they come in as well.
- 56:17Speaker 2: We need a break.
- 56:17Speaker 1: We'll be back with some more on Major League Baseball
- 56:20Speaker 1: on AM 1300 The Zone. Okay, backside of the three
- 56:27Speaker 1: o'clock hour, kind of like the backside of the first
- 56:32Speaker 1: base bag that Jose Ramirez slid into safely yesterday. after
- 56:37Speaker 1: knocking in a run for the fourth consecutive postseason game.
- 56:41Speaker 1: That includes the three times that Cleveland fought off elimination
- 56:45Speaker 1: when they came back to beat the Chicago White Sox
- 56:48Speaker 1: in that best of five ALDS. Now they're up 1-0,
- 56:51Speaker 1: and like I said, in a pretty good position in
- 56:53Speaker 1: this series against the Rays. They've got Parker Messick heading
- 56:56Speaker 1: to the mound. The Rays have not been as good
- 56:59Speaker 1: against lefties this year. Messick already two quality starts. ERA
- 57:03Speaker 1: below one and a half against the Rays this season.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Can he bounce back from lasting just two and a
- 57:10Speaker 1: third innings, though, in game four against the White Sox?
- 57:13Speaker 1: That's a different situation. That's a shorter leash than he'll
- 57:16Speaker 1: have today. He's going to be facing a guy in
- 57:18Speaker 1: Freddie Peralta who went 5-0 over the last month plus
- 57:23Speaker 1: of the season.
- 57:24Speaker 4: ERA was below one.
- 57:25Speaker 1: He had a couple of rocky outings right when he
- 57:27Speaker 1: got to Tampa Bay. And then as the Rays tend
- 57:30Speaker 1: to do when they get their pitchers into that environment,
- 57:33Speaker 1: whether it's the ballpark, of course, the coaching staff and
- 57:36Speaker 1: the analytics, the biggest culprits of it, they can really, really.
- 57:42Speaker 4: Turn guys' careers, turn guys' seasons around. And the former Brewer.
- 57:46Speaker 1: really struggled with the Mets this year he's tasked with
- 57:49Speaker 1: trying to slow down this suddenly white hot Cleveland Guardian
- 57:54Speaker 1: offense they scored seven runs over the last four innings
- 57:57Speaker 1: of game one after being held in check by Drew
- 57:59Speaker 1: Rasmussen early and Steven Vogt their manager talked about the
- 58:03Speaker 1: team's resiliency which has really been true all season after
- 58:06Speaker 1: Cleveland started the year real slow they are.
- 58:09Speaker 15: Um you know obviously we came off an emotional series
- 58:12Speaker 15: had a quick turnaround um But these guys come ready
- 58:15Speaker 15: to play every day. I couldn't be more proud of them.
- 58:19Speaker 15: We got punched early, and then our pitching staff, credit
- 58:21Speaker 15: to them for stopping it and keeping us in the
- 58:24Speaker 15: game as long as they did, and then the offense
- 58:26Speaker 15: came alive. I thought we had graded bats the whole
- 58:28Speaker 15: game and just couldn't get that one hit with runner
- 58:31Speaker 15: scoring position and then hit a couple balls out of
- 58:33Speaker 15: the yard, make it a new game, and really good
- 58:35Speaker 15: job by our offense.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that was Steven Vogt talking about the Guardian offense,
- 58:42Speaker 1: which continues to turn things around after they were really
- 58:46Speaker 1: falling flat in the middle portion of the season. They
- 58:50Speaker 1: really have turned that thing around in a hurry, getting healthy.
- 58:52Speaker 1: Jose Ramirez, who missed. The first part of the season,
- 58:55Speaker 1: not quite himself for a few months. None of that
- 58:58Speaker 1: really matters when you get to the playoffs. I pointed
- 59:00Speaker 1: out that really great slide he had to get back
- 59:03Speaker 1: into first base when he almost got caught overrunning it.
- 59:05Speaker 1: You heard Tom Hamilton on our highlight montage earlier say
- 59:08Speaker 1: that he was out that call. was overturned on replay
- 59:11Speaker 1: because of an incredible slide. He made another great base
- 59:14Speaker 1: running play, taking off for third, opening up the left
- 59:17Speaker 1: side of the infield for Joe Adele to knock in
- 59:19Speaker 1: those two insurance runs, which were so pivotal for the
- 59:22Speaker 1: Guardians in putting things away. It allowed closer Cade Smith
- 59:25Speaker 1: to go right after Tampa. in a very efficient ninth inning,
- 59:28Speaker 1: meaning he and Hunter Gattis are available for tonight. That's
- 59:31Speaker 1: huge because the Guardians had to lean on their bullpen
- 59:34Speaker 1: to keep it close in game one of that series
- 59:36Speaker 1: last night. Game one winners go on to win the
- 59:40Speaker 1: series more than two-thirds of the time, even in this
- 59:43Speaker 1: best-of-seven format. That number is even bigger if you win
- 59:46Speaker 1: game one on the road. And that's what the Guardians
- 59:49Speaker 1: were able to do out hitting the Rays 14-7 and
- 59:52Speaker 1: traveling pretty well as a fan base to Tampa Bay.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Those Guardians fans, like Craig talked about yesterday, they've waited
- 59:59Speaker 1: a long time since 1948, since their last World Series.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: They made it to the World Series a decade ago.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Now they've won four playoff games in a row for
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: the first time. since that run which was ended in
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: game seven heartbreak at the hands of the chicago cubs
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: meanwhile the milwaukee brewers trying to get to the world
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: series trying to avenge last year's loss to the dodgers
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: it's a travel day for those involved in that series
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: but it's a day in which the brewers have to
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: be feeling pretty good as they jet across the country
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: they've got the dodgers on the ropes down now teams
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: have only in the history of the nlcs and i
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: and i saw this stat earlier um The comebacks are
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: pretty rare for MLB teams when they fall behind 0-2.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: It just is difficult because the pitching mechanics change. When
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you play with the lead in a best-of-seven series, you
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: have the luxury of adapting on the fly and punting
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: a game if you have to to save your pitching
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: and have it lined up for the gotta-have-it moments that
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: can come later. Um, 16% of the time, that's the
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: stat for teams that go down to nothing in a
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: best of seven, 16% are able to come back. Only
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: 16 teams have done that in best of seven post-season series.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: 10 of those 16 have come in the world series
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: and only six have come in the league championship series.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Some of that has to do with the format changing,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: evolving over time. But I think it says something about
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: if you get to the world series, maybe the tax
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: on both bullpens is even. There are other factors that
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: come into play at that point. There's usually extra rest
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: involved in a World Series. There's also a certain type
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: of team that's able to come back from a 2-0
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: and a best of seven. If you can get to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: the World Series, your depth has been tested at some
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: point along the way, or you're like the 2019 Nats.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: You've got an elite starting arsenal that can carry you
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: on the mound.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: However, two of.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Those 16 comebacks happened in the last three years. The
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Diamondbacks did it to the Phillies in a National League
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Championship Series in 2023. Of course, the D-backs making it
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: to the World Series and eventually losing to the Texas Rangers.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: And then in 2025, the Blue Jays did it to
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the Mariners, making Seattle still the only team to never
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: even appear in a World Series right now.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: In Major League Baseball. That drought continued this year.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: By the way, Seattle, they've been linked to Joe Espada
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: as a potential new manager. The Astros have a lot
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: of decisions to make coming up in the offseason, and
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: we'll see if that marriage ends up coming to fruition.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Before we get to break, I want you to hear
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: from Jake Bowers, who came up with that clutch at
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: bat lasting more than seven minutes, fouling off a half
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: dozen two-strike pitches before eventually losing working a walk, setting
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: up Christian Yelich to give the Brewers the lead and
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: driving up the pitch count of Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: in last night's game. Here was Bowers on his seven
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: minute AB.
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: It was fun. It was a blast. Honestly, it was
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: a blast.
- 1:03:06Speaker 16: Um, anytime you can get that, that locked in doing anything, um, it's,
- 1:03:13Speaker 16: it's to me, one of the most enjoyable experiences I
- 1:03:17Speaker 16: think a human being can have.
- 1:03:19Speaker 11: So, um, Grateful for the opportunities always. And then, you know, just, yeah,
- 1:03:27Speaker 11: as that was going on, I was just enjoying it.
- 1:03:30Speaker 11: I was honestly just having a blast.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you could see it up there for the Brewers.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: You could see it among his teammates. The Dodgers trailed
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: the Brewers two games to nothing, but I should mention...
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: They're one of those 16 teams who have come back
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: and won from two games down.
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: Matter of fact, they've done it a few times.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Craig will remember the 65 and the 81 World Series
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: where the Dodgers came back from two games behind to win.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: They also did it in the NLCS in 2020. Yeah,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: those games happened in Texas, but still they came back
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and beat the Braves in the NLCS to punch their ticket.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: More football talk coming up in hour number three of
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: the Craig Way Show on 1300 The Zone. Third and
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: final hour, Tuesday afternoon. Bottom of the hour, CJ Vogel
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: joins us to talk Longhorn football.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: For now.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: We'll hear from Longhorn players. We'll hear from Longhorn women's
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: basketball head coach, Vic Schaefer. And hopefully we'll hear from
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: you on the text line at 81530. Text the word Texas,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment. You can also leave
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: us a talkback message on the iHeartRadio app. My name
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: is Jay Kerbin, the producer of The Craig Way Show,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: in for Craig, who will be back tomorrow attending to
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: some personal business.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: Here on this Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: We've talked plenty of football, both the pro and college variety,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: but just around the corner, guys, before we know it,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: basketball season will be here. High expectations for both the
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Longhorn men and the women who were both picked to
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: finish second in the SEC. Sean Miller's team picked to
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: finish one behind Florida. Vic Schaefer's team picked to finish
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: one spot behind South Carolina. Of course, they are coming
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: off an SEC championship winning season. They're coming off a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Final Four season for a second consecutive year. And they
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: had a chance to practice in front of the media yesterday.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer had the chance to talk with the media
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: about his team. And here's the way that press conference started.
- 1:05:38Speaker 17: I believe we've had 12 practices. And this will be
- 1:05:42Speaker 17: a real good week for us. Busy week. We've got
- 1:05:45Speaker 17: SEC media days on Wednesdays. we'll leave Sunday to head
- 1:05:49Speaker 17: up to Connecticut to play an exhibition game on Monday night.
- 1:05:53Speaker 17: I believe they're playing Syracuse either tonight or tomorrow in
- 1:05:56Speaker 17: an exhibition, so they'll have a little bit under their
- 1:05:59Speaker 17: belt against us, but I'm excited to prepare this week.
- 1:06:04Speaker 17: I don't get too caught up in these exhibitions right
- 1:06:07Speaker 17: now as much as I'm just interested in the process,
- 1:06:10Speaker 17: and the process for us is each and every day
- 1:06:12Speaker 17: trying to get 1% better, so.
- 1:06:15Speaker 17: Love my team, love these kids. They've worked really hard
- 1:06:20Speaker 17: and they're working every day. So excited about our season tickets.
- 1:06:26Speaker 17: We're now sold out. So proud of my fan base.
- 1:06:31Speaker 17: That was part of the dream coming here. Part of
- 1:06:34Speaker 17: the expectation, part of the plan was to increase our
- 1:06:38Speaker 17: season ticket sales and really just increase our Our fan
- 1:06:43Speaker 17: base and night in, night out attendance. So I think
- 1:06:47Speaker 17: we've certainly made strides in that. You have to give
- 1:06:51Speaker 17: our kids a ton of credit. They're fun to watch.
- 1:06:53Speaker 17: They're great kids. They have tremendous personalities. They play the
- 1:06:57Speaker 17: game the right way. They honor the game. They respect
- 1:07:01Speaker 17: the game. And they play really hard. So they're fun
- 1:07:04Speaker 17: to watch. And I think that's what happens when you
- 1:07:08Speaker 17: have kids like that and you play the way we play.
- 1:07:12Speaker 17: You know, people enjoy coming and watching them play. You know,
- 1:07:17Speaker 17: we respect that everybody works really hard and earns their money. And,
- 1:07:22Speaker 17: you know, when you come spend your money on a
- 1:07:26Speaker 17: ticket to our games, we certainly want to give you
- 1:07:28Speaker 17: your money's worth. And I think our kids have really
- 1:07:31Speaker 17: done that, and for that I'm extremely proud of them.
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: So we just keep working.
- 1:07:39Speaker 17: Again, just trying to embrace the process right now, not
- 1:07:42Speaker 17: getting too far ahead of ourselves. We're a different team,
- 1:07:46Speaker 17: no question about it. We've lost, obviously, Rory Harmon. When
- 1:07:52Speaker 17: you walk in the gym five straight years and she's
- 1:07:54Speaker 17: not there, all of a sudden, like it was this summer,
- 1:07:59Speaker 17: it's different. And, um, but we've, uh, I really have
- 1:08:04Speaker 17: a lot of confidence in the kids that we have
- 1:08:05Speaker 17: coming back. I love, um, you know, our, our returners
- 1:08:09Speaker 17: that I think are either starters or have played a
- 1:08:12Speaker 17: lot of meaningful minutes for us. Um, Preston Cunningham and Booker,
- 1:08:18Speaker 17: those three that have really played some big minutes for us.
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: So, uh, I love their leadership.
- 1:08:24Speaker 17: I love their, uh, you know, who they are and
- 1:08:27Speaker 17: how they play the game and, and, um, they've been
- 1:08:30Speaker 17: able to really show the rest of our kids what
- 1:08:32Speaker 17: it looks like every day to, to work and, uh,
- 1:08:35Speaker 17: to put the time in. So, um, that's a good
- 1:08:39Speaker 17: place to start. Obviously we have Sarah back, Grace back
- 1:08:42Speaker 17: and Lovisa back. Sarah's her normal, typical vocal self each
- 1:08:46Speaker 17: and every day in practice. Um, you know, uh, she
- 1:08:50Speaker 17: has a, uh, obviously has a value and a certain
- 1:08:53Speaker 17: presence in our, locker room, on the practice floor, everywhere
- 1:08:58Speaker 17: in our program. So we're equally as grateful to her
- 1:09:03Speaker 17: and Grace and LaVisa. So this is day 12, day
- 1:09:10Speaker 17: 13 of practice.
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: And call me at 5. I'll tell you how we're doing.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: And they're only 12 days away from that scrimmage with UCLA.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: that I mentioned earlier, you'll be able to hear that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: game here on our I heart family of stations, more
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: information on that coming up. But first we'll let you
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: listen into Craig's question, which started off this exchange with
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer, um, talking about the exhibition with UCLA coming up,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: obviously a high caliber program and, um, what Vic Schaefer
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: is looking for out of these early season tests and
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: these NIL opportunities.
- 1:09:42Speaker 9: And given, uh, the understanding that, uh, it's more about
- 1:09:46Speaker 9: the process than just the, uh, the exhibition games, normally
- 1:09:50Speaker 9: it's a Division II like Eastern New Mexico or something
- 1:09:54Speaker 9: like that. Given that it's high-level exhibitions at UConn and
- 1:09:58Speaker 9: UCLA up in Cedar Park, does that alter or at
- 1:10:02Speaker 9: least broaden your view of the process when you're going
- 1:10:05Speaker 9: up against high-caliber opposition like that for an exhibition?
- 1:10:09Speaker 17: Well, you know, for our five freshmen, and then you
- 1:10:11Speaker 17: can throw in Jada Clark, those kids, because of our schedule.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: You know, our schedule's pretty meaty. It's pretty tough.
- 1:10:22Speaker 17: A lot of people on that schedule, especially early, you
- 1:10:26Speaker 17: might as well play a couple of them early to
- 1:10:30Speaker 17: kind of get your feet wet. And so with those lofty,
- 1:10:35Speaker 17: you know, with the goals that we have and those teams,
- 1:10:38Speaker 17: those heavy hitters early, I think it's imperative that we
- 1:10:41Speaker 17: kind of, you know, go through the experience, whatever it's
- 1:10:45Speaker 17: going to be. you know, next Monday and then the
- 1:10:48Speaker 17: following Sunday that we go through it and we learn
- 1:10:52Speaker 17: from it, good, bad, or indifferent, that we learn from
- 1:10:55Speaker 17: it and we're able to make some adjustments fairly early.
- 1:11:01Speaker 17: And so I want, you know, you can talk about
- 1:11:04Speaker 17: it all you want, y'all, but until you walk it,
- 1:11:06Speaker 17: until you live it, and, you know, these kids, these
- 1:11:09Speaker 17: five freshmen, Jada Clark, they're all really talented.
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: They're going to play. So... That being said, they need
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: to know what reality is.
- 1:11:18Speaker 17: You know, I think they look around and I try
- 1:11:21Speaker 17: to remind them every day of what reality.
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: Is here at the University of Texas. And it's different.
- 1:11:27Speaker 17: And so when you live it here, when you go
- 1:11:31Speaker 17: through it, you know, my team will tell you, I
- 1:11:34Speaker 17: don't need to lose to get my attention. So they
- 1:11:37Speaker 17: get my attention every day. And I think that's what Good, bad,
- 1:11:42Speaker 17: or indifferent, that's what makes me who I am. And
- 1:11:46Speaker 17: so with that being said, y'all have heard me talk
- 1:11:50Speaker 17: about coaching against the ghost, worrying about what might happen,
- 1:11:54Speaker 17: could happen, because inevitably it's going to happen.
- 1:11:59Speaker 7: One thing's guaranteed in life is adversity.
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: It's going to happen.
- 1:12:03Speaker 17: And it's how you respond that defines you. It's not
- 1:12:08Speaker 17: the adversity itself. You know, my family's going through a
- 1:12:11Speaker 17: little adversity right now. My mother-in-law's, you know, Holly's really
- 1:12:15Speaker 17: going through a tough time right now. And, you know,
- 1:12:18Speaker 17: it's just our destiny as children. I mean, it's just,
- 1:12:22Speaker 17: as my mother said, it's the way it's supposed to be.
- 1:12:24Speaker 17: It's supposed to be that way versus the other way around,
- 1:12:28Speaker 17: you know, with them dealing with us. And so, again,
- 1:12:32Speaker 17: when adversity comes, you know, how do you handle it?
- 1:12:35Speaker 17: And so by playing these teams early, I think we'll,
- 1:12:38Speaker 17: We'll probably have a little adversity in-game, post-game, whatever it.
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: Is, and it's how you come through it.
- 1:12:46Speaker 17: And, you know, last year I think back to that,
- 1:12:49Speaker 17: to our games out in Vegas in that event. You know,
- 1:12:53Speaker 17: we had some adversity. We had a big lead in
- 1:12:55Speaker 17: the first game. They made a run in the second half.
- 1:12:57Speaker 17: We withstood it. Second game, we were down eight with
- 1:13:01Speaker 17: a little over a minute to go in the third quarter,
- 1:13:03Speaker 17: and then we came back. And so I think that
- 1:13:06Speaker 17: really helped that team and showed them a little metal,
- 1:13:11Speaker 17: showed them a little about themselves, and we were able
- 1:13:13Speaker 17: to carry that through the year.
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: So, yeah, I think these games.
- 1:13:20Speaker 17: Carry a lot of meaning, but it's not about winning
- 1:13:23Speaker 17: and losing.
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: It's about growth and development.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, some really interesting insight there into the mindset of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer, how he's approaching these high level scrimmages that
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: are on the Longhorns plate coming up to start this
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: 2026-27 season. We'll talk much more throughout the week about
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Longhorn women's basketball. We'll hear more from Vic Schaefer coming
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: up as we get closer and closer to those scrimmages.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: We do need to sneak a break in and then
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: coming up, We'll hear from Trevor Goosby and Justin Cryer,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: some of their reactions to the Red River loss. It's
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: all leading into our conversation at the bottom of the
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: hour with C.J. Vogel from On Texas Football as we
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: continue to sort through things for this Longhorn football program
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: as they turn the page from OU to Florida. You're
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: listening to AM 1300 The Zone, where you're always available
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: to listen to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: But a lot that Longhorn fans are probably feeling this
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: sentiment about as we bump back with George Strait, as always,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: in the 4 o'clock hour on a texted Tuesday edition
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: of the program. This is another one of the inconceivable
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: 50 number ones. in the King George Straits catalog. There
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: were some reactions to share from Longhorn players, certainly after
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: the loss to Oklahoma at the state fair on Saturday.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: One of those players who was discussing things was Justin Cryer.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: He was talking about the Red River rivalry experience. He
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: was asked where it ranks and how it stacked up
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: in his college football career and compared to what he
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: thought it would be. despite obviously the result not going
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: the Longhorns way.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: Here's Cryer.
- 1:15:07Speaker 19: Probably one of the, my college career is all said
- 1:15:11Speaker 19: and done, probably one of my favorite memories that I'll
- 1:15:13Speaker 19: take away from it. We lose sight a lot in
- 1:15:17Speaker 19: this day and age of college football where with NIL
- 1:15:20Speaker 19: and the transfer portal and all this other stuff, conference realignment,
- 1:15:25Speaker 19: things like this matters, right? It's the rivalries and the
- 1:15:28Speaker 19: tradition that makes this game so special. And, like, being
- 1:15:31Speaker 19: a part of this and growing up in this state
- 1:15:34Speaker 19: and being able to represent this logo, like, that means
- 1:15:36Speaker 19: the world to me, right? And that means more to
- 1:15:38Speaker 19: me than any, like, opportunity in a trans reporter that
- 1:15:43Speaker 19: can offer me, right? Because at the end of the day, like,
- 1:15:45Speaker 19: you don't get these opportunities and these experiences, like, all
- 1:15:50Speaker 19: the time. So wearing this brown and orange and representing
- 1:15:54Speaker 19: this university has been a privilege and being able to
- 1:15:57Speaker 19: just be out there for that. It's been something that
- 1:15:59Speaker 19: has been one of the great joys of my life.
- 1:16:00Speaker 19: And I definitely don't take that for granted. And I'm
- 1:16:02Speaker 19: just proud to say that I was out there.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Interesting perspective that you don't always hear from a player
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: after losing in what is the most important game of
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: the season for several Longhorns and several fans. And look,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: maybe some of that comes with being new to the
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Texas program, being a more experienced college football player to
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: be able to bring that perspective in. But interesting hearing
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: that from Justin Cryer and a thoughtful answer. to what
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: I thought was an interesting question. With that said, though,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: is it still difficult to turn the page?
- 1:16:30Speaker 19: I hate to say it, but I have a lot
- 1:16:33Speaker 19: of experiences with having to move on after losing games.
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: That's just how it is.
- 1:16:38Speaker 19: It's pretty funny, but it is what it is.
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: I get it.
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: I get it.
- 1:16:46Speaker 19: I've taken my fair share of lumps of cards, and
- 1:16:50Speaker 19: I have not always handled losing so well. I'm older now,
- 1:16:54Speaker 19: and You've got to be able to turn the page.
- 1:16:57Speaker 19: You don't get to achieve what you want to achieve
- 1:17:01Speaker 19: out of any given year when you get stuck on
- 1:17:03Speaker 19: one thing. Talking to Conor with C-Rob, the last thing
- 1:17:08Speaker 19: he told me before we left the field was that
- 1:17:10Speaker 19: the last time he lost his game, they made it
- 1:17:11Speaker 19: to the semifinals.
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: Correct me.
- 1:17:13Speaker 19: If I'm wrong, we played 12 games, guaranteed. I don't
- 1:17:17Speaker 19: think that because one game didn't go our way that
- 1:17:21Speaker 19: we should cancel the rest of the season and just
- 1:17:23Speaker 19: fun in there for the rest of the year.
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: Everything we want is still right in front of us.
- 1:17:27Speaker 19: It's football at the end of the day. We still
- 1:17:31Speaker 19: got to go out there and have fun. I'm not
- 1:17:33Speaker 19: going to let one result sway me and my mindset
- 1:17:36Speaker 19: from going out there and just playing the game I love.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: It's pretty experienced, pretty level-headed mindset the Monday after from
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: Justin Juice-Crier, important interior linebacker for this Longhorn team who
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: will be hoping for a better performance in the Longhorns
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: next outing against Florida he mentioned turning the page and
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: how difficult that might be he's got experience from his
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: time at Florida State facing Jaden Ball and so here's
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: what he had to say about going up against him
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: in the Gator rushing attack which has obviously been remade
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: this year with Buster Faulkner and John Sumrall at the
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: helm yeah if.
- 1:18:08Speaker 19: You watched that game he gave us a lot of
- 1:18:10Speaker 19: problems but I remember going into the game he was
- 1:18:12Speaker 19: he had he needed a certain number to get to
- 1:18:15Speaker 19: a thousand and at that point he uh it was
- 1:18:17Speaker 19: like the first a thousand yard runner that they had
- 1:18:19Speaker 19: and a long time, and they went out there to
- 1:18:22Speaker 19: go get it. So I think he's a very good player.
- 1:18:24Speaker 19: I think he's probably one of the best in the country. So, again, defensively, man,
- 1:18:30Speaker 19: we've got to stop the run. Every week, we've got
- 1:18:31Speaker 19: to stop the run. I think Coach Faulkner is a
- 1:18:34Speaker 19: very good play caller. I got to play against him
- 1:18:39Speaker 19: in Ireland, and he brought Singleton over, brought a lot
- 1:18:43Speaker 19: of his guys over. I think they do a lot
- 1:18:45Speaker 19: of things that are like the motion and shifts can
- 1:18:49Speaker 19: make playing defense difficult, especially for a younger guy or
- 1:18:52Speaker 19: someone who has the eyes in the wrong place. So
- 1:18:54Speaker 19: being someone who's older and being a linebacker, you've got
- 1:18:57Speaker 19: to make sure your eyes are in the right spot
- 1:18:58Speaker 19: because they do a lot of just stuff to try
- 1:19:01Speaker 19: and get you off your game. And that's how he
- 1:19:02Speaker 19: gets those open holes from the run through, right? So
- 1:19:04Speaker 19: you want to just make sure that– the boxes accounted
- 1:19:09Speaker 19: for and make sure everyone has eyes on the right people. And, uh,
- 1:19:12Speaker 19: you know, I'm gonna try and get them out of that. Um,
- 1:19:15Speaker 19: just the constantly running to try and just break it
- 1:19:17Speaker 19: up there. They're sequencing a little bit.
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: It's a big deal against Florida that I discipline against
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: that really solid rushing attack. That's Justin Cryer giving you
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: some of his detailed thoughts. He's faced Buster Faulkner back
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: when he was the OC at Georgia tech, when they
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: took on Florida state in Ireland a couple of years ago,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: when Haynes King and Georgia tech beat Florida state. So, um,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: Some good perspective there and good questions there by the
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: reporters to Justin Cryer. Trevor Goosby, Longhorn's left tackle, talking
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: about the loss and first was asked about Arch Manning,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: how he took the loss.
- 1:19:53Speaker 12: I don't think it was any different than anybody else's.
- 1:19:55Speaker 12: I mean, we're all down. Obviously, we don't want to
- 1:19:57Speaker 12: lose that game. And, you know, everybody's been, you know,
- 1:20:01Speaker 12: it's been heavy on us. But now we just got
- 1:20:03Speaker 12: to move on and focus on Florida.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: You heard Justin Cryer, you referred to him as C-Rob,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Connor Robertson, talk about the 2023 Red River loss that
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: the Longhorns went on to respond pretty well from, winning
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: the Big 12 championship, not dropping another game until that
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: semifinal heartbreaker against Washington that year.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: So what were the lessons.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: And the responses from that 2023 loss like for Trevor Goosby,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: who was a young player at the time?
- 1:20:30Speaker 12: Jake Majors did a great job. Also, Baron Sorrell, those
- 1:20:32Speaker 12: kind of guys. They're always just saying, kind of what
- 1:20:35Speaker 12: we're saying now is how are we going to respond?
- 1:20:37Speaker 12: Are we going to tuck our tail? Are we going
- 1:20:38Speaker 12: to learn from this and be better because of it?
- 1:20:41Speaker 12: That's kind of what all the leaders have been telling
- 1:20:43Speaker 12: the guys and making sure that we're keeping our energy
- 1:20:45Speaker 12: up and not letting it get down on us.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Hearing from Trevor Goosby this hour, he was a young player,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: like I mentioned, during that 2023 Red River loss, the
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: last time Texas has lost, coincidentally, the last Three Red
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: River losses have come on the final play, sort of
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: adding to that Longhorn heartbreak. How did those conversations with
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: the older guys like Sorrell and Majors resonate with Goosby
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: back when he was a younger player in that game
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: three years ago?
- 1:21:13Speaker 12: It resonated a lot because, you know, just you can't
- 1:21:18Speaker 12: let one team beat you in two weeks. You know,
- 1:21:20Speaker 12: you can't let the Oklahoma loss linger into Florida, and
- 1:21:22Speaker 12: then it just keeps going.
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: On and on.
- 1:21:24Speaker 12: You know, we just got to be able to learn
- 1:21:26Speaker 12: from it and grow from it, so.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: And as for Trevor Goosby and his advice to younger
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: players on what lies ahead.
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: Keep our heads up. You know, obviously one loss doesn't
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: define us.
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: And just making sure that we're, you know, moving on
- 1:21:39Speaker 12: to the next thing and make sure that we're focusing
- 1:21:41Speaker 12: on the little things because ultimately in this league, the
- 1:21:43Speaker 12: little things is what's going to push guys over the
- 1:21:45Speaker 12: top of or push teams over the top of other teams.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Finally, what does he feel is missing, if anything, from
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: this Texas offense, which has been inconsistent over the last
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: few weeks?
- 1:21:55Speaker 12: It's little things on all ends. You know, Coach Sark
- 1:21:58Speaker 12: always says it takes all 11 to run the football. And,
- 1:22:00Speaker 12: you know, sometimes the O-line, you know, and just kind
- 1:22:02Speaker 12: of we're always just one man away, I feel like.
- 1:22:05Speaker 12: You know, just making sure that we're all doing our
- 1:22:07Speaker 12: job every single play. I think that's kind of what's
- 1:22:10Speaker 12: holding us back at the moment.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: That's Trevor Goosby giving some of his thoughts on the
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Longhorns' loss in the Red River rivalry. We'll hear more
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: Longhorn players sound a little later on in the week.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: And we'll also bring you more from Steve Sarkeesian as
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Texas gets ready to turn the page to take on
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: the Florida Gators. We'll touch on that. We'll also have
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: some Arch Manning conversations coming up in the next segment. C.J.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Vogel from On Texas Football will join us here on
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: the program. You're listening on Sports Radio AM 1300 The
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: Jay Kerman in for Craig Way.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: Back.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: In a few minutes.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: So joining us now to discuss this matchup, the college
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: football insider covers the Longhorns as well as recruiting over
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: on On Texas Football, CJ Vogel.
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: Hey, welcome to the show.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: We got a lot to discuss talking about this Red
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: River game. Appreciate the time.
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, Jake. Appreciate you having me.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: Well, look, you've pointed out all week long in your
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: coverage the way this Texas offense, CJ, has unfortunately taken
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: a step backwards over the last few weeks and really
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: this season relative to where they were Going back to
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: 2025 and especially back to the way they played offense
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: in 2024, Sark's been asked this, but from what you
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: can see, where would you boil down what's missing right
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: now for the Longhorns on that side of the ball?
- 1:23:25Speaker 18: You know, I wish I knew, and I think Sark
- 1:23:27Speaker 18: laid it out pretty well. after the Tennessee game. He said, look,
- 1:23:31Speaker 18: it's not just one issue, right? I can't just point
- 1:23:33Speaker 18: to the right or left guard. I can't just point
- 1:23:35Speaker 18: to the quarterback, right? The running backs, you know, sometimes
- 1:23:38Speaker 18: they hit their holes. Sometimes they don't, right? Sometimes there's
- 1:23:41Speaker 18: a dropped pass. Sometimes they catch it. And he goes,
- 1:23:43Speaker 18: you know, oftentimes it's kind of just a mixture. And
- 1:23:46Speaker 18: I felt like that Oklahoma game for all, A large
- 1:23:50Speaker 18: portion of it was a mixture of your offensive line
- 1:23:52Speaker 18: not getting a push, your quarterback not making the read,
- 1:23:55Speaker 18: your quarterback holding onto the football too long, your running
- 1:23:58Speaker 18: backs maybe not hitting the hole where it needed to go.
- 1:24:00Speaker 18: It was a mixture of just about everything. And that's
- 1:24:03Speaker 18: where the frustration is because, you know, on the surface,
- 1:24:06Speaker 18: on paper, very talented football team.
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: I don't think anybody in America would dispute that.
- 1:24:12Speaker 18: But playing together, playing cohesively, and making sure that you
- 1:24:14Speaker 18: are taking advantage of opportunities when presented, that's something that
- 1:24:18Speaker 18: I think is still a pretty sizable work in progress
- 1:24:22Speaker 18: going into the sixth game of the season.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're going to say, like I talked about
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: earlier with Shahan Jaya Raja from CBS Sports, If you're
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: going to say there's a gap right now between Texas
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: and then the top teams in the SEC, Georgia and Alabama,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I think it boils down to exactly what you talked about.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: I also think about those two teams specifically, and I
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: see a clear identity on offense, even though they dragged
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: each other into a defensive scrap in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: This might be a casual take coming from me, but
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: it feels as though this Texas offense lacks an identity
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: I don't think it has one, and I don't think
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: it had one a year ago.
- 1:25:00Speaker 18: In fact, the identity that it had a year ago was,
- 1:25:03Speaker 18: this is towards the back end of the season as well,
- 1:25:05Speaker 18: Arch Manning would bail you out of sticky situations, right?
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: That was your identity, was the quarterback playing hero ball.
- 1:25:11Speaker 18: Well, when the hero isn't always there to clean up
- 1:25:15Speaker 18: the mess or to save the day, well, now you're
- 1:25:17Speaker 18: really looking at it in a sense that you don't
- 1:25:20Speaker 18: have something to fall back on, right? Arch Manning was
- 1:25:23Speaker 18: the guy that dug you out of issues all season
- 1:25:26Speaker 18: long in 2025.
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: Well.
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: He's not running the football the way that he did
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: a year ago, right?
- 1:25:32Speaker 18: He's not necessarily finding and reading the field the way
- 1:25:36Speaker 18: that at times he did in 2025.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: Where do you go from here, right?
- 1:25:39Speaker 18: I still think that the raw talent for Arch Manning
- 1:25:43Speaker 18: is up there with just about any other quarterback in
- 1:25:45Speaker 18: the entire country. But having him play on schedule, having
- 1:25:48Speaker 18: him read the football, having him progress defensively, from his
- 1:25:51Speaker 18: number one to number two to his check down consistently,
- 1:25:54Speaker 18: it's been mucky, right?
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: It's not been pretty.
- 1:25:56Speaker 18: And as a result, if you don't have that hero
- 1:25:59Speaker 18: and you don't have that identity, where do you fall
- 1:26:01Speaker 18: on if everything else is kind of a mumbled mess?
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: CJ Vogel from On Texas Football joins us. I thought
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: you had a good question for Sark yesterday about whether
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: or not arch is seeing enough and adjusting enough the
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: way sark would like him to kind of at the
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: line of scrimmage he's faced some pretty good play callers
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: so far no doubt and i've talked about the way
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: they've disguised things that can make life difficult for any
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: quarterback but this is year two as the starter now
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: for arch manning do you still feel like there's a
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: step that needs to be taken in that part of
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: his game i think you were just hinting at your answer.
- 1:26:33Speaker 18: Yeah 100 well first and foremost let's lay it out
- 1:26:36Speaker 18: right brent venables matt patricia Jim Knowles, I don't think
- 1:26:39Speaker 18: you'll find three more proven consistent defensive play callers in
- 1:26:44Speaker 18: the entire country, right? That's what Texas has had to
- 1:26:46Speaker 18: play through their first five games. Obviously, that has aided
- 1:26:50Speaker 18: a lot of the frustrations when it comes to why
- 1:26:52Speaker 18: this offense hasn't clicked.
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: I mean, those are phenomenal defensive coordinators, right?
- 1:26:56Speaker 18: They get it. They figure it out. But you're expected
- 1:26:59Speaker 18: to have a offense that can compete with the best
- 1:27:02Speaker 18: of the best, right? And they were able to against
- 1:27:04Speaker 18: Ohio State in that fourth quarter. But the consistency, again,
- 1:27:06Speaker 18: not where it needs to be. But to your point, right,
- 1:27:11Speaker 18: I think your quarterback in year four of the system,
- 1:27:13Speaker 18: disregard of what year starter he is, year four in
- 1:27:17Speaker 18: the system should be able to identify checks and audibles
- 1:27:20Speaker 18: and go up to the line of scrimmage and say.
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: Hold on, what we're about to call or what we
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: have called.
- 1:27:25Speaker 18: And we're about to run against this look and against
- 1:27:28Speaker 18: this front and against whatever is in front of me,
- 1:27:31Speaker 18: it doesn't make sense, right? And specifically, I look at
- 1:27:33Speaker 18: the second and four right before, it was the second
- 1:27:36Speaker 18: to last drive Texas had in the ballgame against Oklahoma.
- 1:27:39Speaker 18: Second and four coming off of a six-yard QB scrimmage.
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: A QB designed run out of empty.
- 1:27:45Speaker 18: You're sitting there with Raleigh Brown next to you and
- 1:27:49Speaker 18: seven Oklahoma defenders in the box with an eighth, about
- 1:27:52Speaker 18: six yards out, right? That's eight guys at the pre-snap
- 1:27:56Speaker 18: that are in the box, no further away from five,
- 1:27:59Speaker 18: five yards from the snap.
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: And what do you do?
- 1:28:02Speaker 18: You, you try to run off tackle, you lose five yards.
- 1:28:05Speaker 18: So instead of second and four, or, you know, you
- 1:28:07Speaker 18: throw an incomplete pass or you audible out of it,
- 1:28:11Speaker 18: You're now in third and nine. Texas gained seven on
- 1:28:14Speaker 18: a slant to Emmitt Mosley on third down, but now
- 1:28:17Speaker 18: you're fourth and two. You go to the two-minute timeout.
- 1:28:20Speaker 18: You deliberate a little bit. Kicker comes out, misses. Obviously,
- 1:28:23Speaker 18: the game goes the way that it does, but that
- 1:28:25Speaker 18: instance in particular, that's why I sit here and I say,
- 1:28:28Speaker 18: you know, Quinn Ewers located that immediately against Arizona State.
- 1:28:32Speaker 18: Checked protection, made sure Matthew Golden knew where to go,
- 1:28:35Speaker 18: and on fourth and 13, delivered the ball that saved
- 1:28:37Speaker 18: the season a couple of years ago.
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: I don't see that right now with Arch Manning. And
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: that's a concern in year four.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I love that breakdown because it's so easy to make
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: fourth and two the story. And I was going to
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: ask you about that as a kind of a defining
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: moment of the game. On one hand, I think Steve
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: Sarkeesian is right. If you make that kick, you probably
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: win the game, giving Oklahoma the football on its own
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: 25 or so with a three point lead.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: Does that make it the right decision?
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: I think you can debate back and forth, but it's
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: the things leading up to it that are just as
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: important that don't get talked about. So I'm really glad
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: you pointed that out. And I'm curious your thoughts on
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: that fourth and two decision.
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: Yeah, look, um, you know, for Sark, that's a tough
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: spot to be in.
- 1:29:16Speaker 18: You know, you take the points, you have the opportunity
- 1:29:18Speaker 18: to take the lead with two minutes left. You kick it,
- 1:29:22Speaker 18: you make the field goal, you're a hero, you made
- 1:29:23Speaker 18: the right decision. If you don't, you're a villain because
- 1:29:25Speaker 18: you didn't, right? That's the tough spot. My frustrations, and
- 1:29:29Speaker 18: this is where I kind of, you know, didn't see
- 1:29:33Speaker 18: it all the way through with Sark, is fourth and
- 1:29:36Speaker 18: six and fourth and nine in your own tear against
- 1:29:38Speaker 18: Ohio State, you had no issue. And you convert it
- 1:29:40Speaker 18: and it looked great. You come out in the press conference.
- 1:29:42Speaker 18: You say, yeah, that's why I was hired to be here.
- 1:29:45Speaker 18: Winners win. We go for it there. That's loser talk
- 1:29:48Speaker 18: if you don't.
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: And it's like, well.
- 1:29:49Speaker 18: You had an opportunity there to play for the very
- 1:29:52Speaker 18: last possession on that fourth and two.
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: And guess what?
- 1:29:56Speaker 18: Even if you don't get it, it's about seven or
- 1:29:58Speaker 18: eight yards back up the field than where Ohio State
- 1:30:01Speaker 18: would have had the football had you missed the 53-yard
- 1:30:03Speaker 18: field goal in which you did. So that's my frustration there. Again,
- 1:30:08Speaker 18: if he makes the kick, who knows, right? But playing
- 1:30:11Speaker 18: for that final possession, playing for the absolute final drive,
- 1:30:15Speaker 18: is something that I thought would have been the call,
- 1:30:18Speaker 18: given where we were coming out of the Ohio State
- 1:30:20Speaker 18: game and kind of the brass that we saw from Sarkevin.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: That's where I kind of landed on it as well,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: but I was curious your thoughts there. CJ Vogel from
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: On Texas Football joining us, playing Tuesday afternoon quarterback a
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: little bit here on the Longhorns-Red River rivalry loss. One
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: thing that you pointed out over on On Texas Football
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: was the 10 personnel. where Texas has been able to
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: generate the types of explosive plays that I think they've
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: been starving for otherwise. Obviously put the pick six and
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: put it in a separate bin over here as Arch
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Manning missed Coleman, wound up throwing a very costly mistake
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: in that moment. Is this one of those things where
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Texas is having success with the 10 personnel because of
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: how scarcely they're using it? Or could it be something
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: as simple as wanting to use a little bit more?
- 1:31:04Speaker 5: I'd like to see it more.
- 1:31:05Speaker 18: And look, they've had 15 snaps and 10 personnel over
- 1:31:08Speaker 18: the last two games, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: Averaging 9.93 yards per play.
- 1:31:13Speaker 18: That's the most explosive personnel package that Texas has in
- 1:31:16Speaker 18: those two games. You obviously cannot run 10 personnel, 60,
- 1:31:21Speaker 18: 70% of your snaps. You just can't do it. This
- 1:31:23Speaker 18: isn't Madden. You're not playing NCAA, right? You can't just
- 1:31:25Speaker 18: air the football out. I understand that. But right now
- 1:31:28Speaker 18: it Again, seven and a half snaps per game. There
- 1:31:31Speaker 18: is a larger window and opportunity for this personnel package
- 1:31:34Speaker 18: to get on the field. And more importantly, it's to
- 1:31:37Speaker 18: get Jermaine Bishop on the field, right? That catch and
- 1:31:40Speaker 18: 15-yard kind of just turn up the field. No one
- 1:31:43Speaker 18: else on this field, on this Texas team, has that
- 1:31:46Speaker 18: quickness with the ball in his hands.
- 1:31:48Speaker 14: And now.
- 1:31:49Speaker 18: What do you do? Well, I look right now at
- 1:31:52Speaker 18: a struggling running game. How do I get a lighter box? Well,
- 1:31:54Speaker 18: I spread the football field. If I'm having a struggling
- 1:31:57Speaker 18: quarterback that doesn't progress and read the field all that well,
- 1:32:00Speaker 18: what do I do? I try to find areas in
- 1:32:02Speaker 18: which there's a lot of space for white shirts to
- 1:32:04Speaker 18: be open. Go back and look at 10 personnel. Where
- 1:32:07Speaker 18: were the two touchdowns that arched through out of 10 personnel?
- 1:32:10Speaker 18: Ryan Wingo over the middle of the field, Jermaine Bishop
- 1:32:12Speaker 18: coming over the middle of the field, wide open, a
- 1:32:14Speaker 18: lot of space, could not miss them. made things very easy.
- 1:32:18Speaker 18: And I think 10 personnel just generates that space in
- 1:32:21Speaker 18: the back end, especially or even when teams drop seven
- 1:32:23Speaker 18: or eight in coverage.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: And against the defense that coming in just didn't give
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: many of those up, really didn't give any of those
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: up all season coming into this particular matchup.
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: So I thought that was noteworthy.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: While we have a couple minutes, Texas takes on Florida
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: at DKR Saturday morning. You can hear it right here
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: on AM 1300 The Zone as well as 98.1 FM KVET.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: What particular matchup, whether it's a specific player or a
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: specific group, has your attention here on Tuesday?
- 1:32:51Speaker 18: Yeah, look, Florida, what an interesting run that they've had
- 1:32:54Speaker 18: so far this year, right?
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: You know, they stomp Ole Miss.
- 1:32:57Speaker 18: Myself, including a number of national guys, sat there and said, hey,
- 1:33:01Speaker 18: Florida looks like they could be a top five team.
- 1:33:03Speaker 18: They look like this is the best offense in America.
- 1:33:06Speaker 18: Missouri shut them down, and then you go watch them
- 1:33:09Speaker 18: against South Carolina, and hey, it wasn't much prettier. So
- 1:33:13Speaker 18: where do I look with Florida? Well, obviously, Jaden Ball
- 1:33:16Speaker 18: gets all the praise. Jaden Ball, that running game, is
- 1:33:19Speaker 18: something that you look at and say, well, if you
- 1:33:20Speaker 18: take it away, can Aaron Filo beat you? And I
- 1:33:23Speaker 18: thought that's something that Oklahoma did very well against Texas.
- 1:33:28Speaker 18: We're going to drop seven and eight in coverage at
- 1:33:30Speaker 18: times because we don't trust that one. You're going to
- 1:33:32Speaker 18: stop there, that you're going to stick with the run
- 1:33:34Speaker 18: to beat us via the ground. Texas has to take
- 1:33:38Speaker 18: away the run. I know it's a, it's cliche, but
- 1:33:41Speaker 18: Andrew Ford, that interior hero con new, if you're able
- 1:33:44Speaker 18: to clog lanes and force things East and West to
- 1:33:47Speaker 18: allow a Raheem Biles and Justin Cryer and Grayson Littleton,
- 1:33:50Speaker 18: Jelani McDonald, and all these guys to come screaming downhill.
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: I like Texas's chances on that side.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's always a key when you're facing, I think,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: a Buster Faulkner offense. How many bodies do you have
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: to devote to stop the run? How much can you
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: force the quarterback to beat you? I'm going to be
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: curious to see how that all kind of pans out. Okay,
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: quick picks because we've got a loaded slate this week.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Indiana or Ohio State?
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: Ohio State.
- 1:34:16Speaker 18: Look, Indiana hasn't looked like the national champions this year.
- 1:34:20Speaker 18: They've been struggling.
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: Notre Dame goes to Provo, plays BYU.
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: Notre Dame. I trust the quarterback.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: Uh-oh, we're agreeing way too much here. Missouri Ole Miss,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: is that going to draw a disagreement? Austin Simmons against
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: his old team, but not his old coach?
- 1:34:35Speaker 18: Yeah, I like that. I actually like Missouri this year.
- 1:34:37Speaker 18: I think the quarterback does just enough, but that running game,
- 1:34:40Speaker 18: I think Drinkowitz is a better coach than Pete Golden.
- 1:34:43Speaker 18: I think his team is more disciplined on both sides
- 1:34:45Speaker 18: of the football than Ole Miss right now.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: That could be a tough spot for Texas if they
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: see Ole Miss coming in here after a loss. That's certainly...
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: a big matchup. CJ, thanks as always for joining us.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: You can follow CJ at CJ Vogel underscore OTF on X.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: You can follow his coverage all season long when it
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: comes to Texas football.
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: Appreciate the time.
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: Absolutely, Jake. Thanks for having me.
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: No problem.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: That's CJ Vogel talking Longhorn football. We'll wrap things up
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: with a couple more college football notes when we get
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: to our final break of the show. This is Sports
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: Radio AM 1300 The Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: Closing out the show with a couple of thoughts. First,
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: on a soundbite you heard.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Yesterday in Steve Sarkeesian's weekly news conference, he mentioned some
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: of the expectations that come with.
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: Arch Manning because of his last name.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: And look, this is something that's been talked about ad
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: nauseum throughout Arch's time here at Texas. He said if
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Arch Manning's last name was, say, Joe Smith, he'd be
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: talked about differently because not in the way other people
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: think about it, to where you think about someone having
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: the last name Manning, Think about a guy getting extra grace,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: extra privilege. Sark says that it's, it's kind of an
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: issue for him because he has all this undue expectation, uh,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: this extra hype placed on him, uh, by folks in
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: the media. Um, Andy Staples, whose show I really enjoy, um,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: over at On3 as part of the College Football Inquirer
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: podcast with Yahoo Sports.
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: He put out a tweet.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: He said, if Archie Manning's name really was Joe Smith,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Sark would be trying KJ Lacey or Dia Bell.
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: Number one, it's not true.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: Arch Manning hasn't played at anything close to a benchable level.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: As we've mentioned on the program several times, he's won
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: 11 of 12 starts going into that Red River game,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: four of which came over teams that were top 10
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: ranked at the time. No other quarterback in college football
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: has done that. And no other quarterback in college football
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: would do that and have people talking about they should
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: be benched. So not only is that an incorrect take,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: but it's one that proves Sark's point correct, which I
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: know people don't think of it that way when Arch
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Manning's name is brought up and, oh, he gets this
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: and that extra because of his last name. But by
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: putting out statements like that, Andy Staples, I love you,
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: but that exactly proves Steve Sarkeesian's point. So we'll hear
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: more about maybe that and Arch Banning discourse tomorrow. We're
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: also going to hear a lot more about the Florida
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: Gators tomorrow. When Craig Way comes back to the program,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: he will talk to Florida Gators play-by-play voice Sean Kelly.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: on tomorrow's show and we'll continue to bring you a
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: preview of all things Gator football we'll talk to Greg
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Tepper as well for a high school football catch-up thank
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: you so much to the guests who joined the program
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: today Shahan Jaya Raja from CBS Sports Jory Epstein senior
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: NFL writer with Yahoo Sports and CJ Vogel, an insider
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: over at On Texas Football. If you missed any of
