- 0:02Welcome to a new episode of Pop Culture Junkie Pops,
- 0:10where we tell you what you should be reading,
- 0:13listening to, watching, unless you want to suck
- 0:16and not do it.
- 0:18So, I love you.
- 0:19But you should, because we're telling you
- 0:23these things are good.
- 0:24So, you know, and Olivia, what are you up to?
- 0:27(laughing)
- 0:30Yeah.
- 0:31So, this week, I'm gonna pop a movie
- 0:34that I talked about at the start of this year
- 0:38that I was quite excited for.
- 0:39Finally got around to seeing "Death of Unicorn".
- 0:43Sean, have you seen it yet?
- 0:44I have not because the rights made to those reviews
- 0:47were kind of iffy.
- 0:49Okay, I say you should watch it.
- 0:51And here's the thing, if you watch the trailer
- 0:55and go in knowing that is an A24 film,
- 0:58you will get exactly what you expect out of that trailer.
- 1:02It is a really, really great commentary on the rich,
- 1:06on Big Pharma, on all of these things that,
- 1:10the elite is the capitalism,
- 1:14and it's just a commentary on that.
- 1:16Now, of course, it's a bad shit crazy,
- 1:18because it also is about killing a unicorn
- 1:21and finding a unicorn.
- 1:22So it kind of has this commentary on society,
- 1:26but then it's also silly goofy good time,
- 1:30as well you have Paul Rudd, you have Jenna Ortega.
- 1:35I mean, that's enough right there.
- 1:37It's a convince me to watch it, honestly.
- 1:39I love both of them.
- 1:41Yes, and it's good.
- 1:42It's silly, it's goofy.
- 1:44I watch it after a difficult day,
- 1:46and I had a simply lovely time
- 1:48and got all the giggles that I wanted.
- 1:50So screw Rotten Tomatoes, I say pop it and watch it.
- 1:55You know what?
- 1:57I don't always trust Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:58I agree with that.
- 1:59Like just because, you know, based,
- 2:00I don't know, critics don't get something,
- 2:03doesn't mean you're not gonna like it.
- 2:04So I'm gonna give it a whirl.
- 2:06I don't agree with you.
- 2:06For you, a lot of the time.
- 2:08This is fair.
- 2:09I am going to pop a book this week,
- 2:13and this is actually one that you have read as well,
- 2:16Olivia.
- 2:17I am going to pop a book called Light Out by Navessa Allen.
- 2:22So, book is filthy y'all.
- 2:28This is a muddy book.
- 2:31It has an entire page in the beginning of trigger warnings
- 2:36about knife play, anal play, stalking, murder.
- 2:41I don't know if you need it.
- 2:44It's much more like.
- 2:46Oh, no, it would take me too long to list them all.
- 2:49But basically this woman has, who's a nurse,
- 2:53gets her kicks off kind of following a guy online
- 2:58who posts shirtless videos wearing like a horror mask,
- 3:02like a scary mask, but you can see his body
- 3:04and it's just like, thirst traps.
- 3:06Social comment little things on his pictures
- 3:08and videos about how hot he is
- 3:10and the things that she wishes they could do to each other.
- 3:13But what happens when she really gets the chaff to do those?
- 3:18Does she really want to live out these twisted fantasies
- 3:21with a masked man or is she too chicken
- 3:25or is he too crazy and pushes her to the edge?
- 3:28Find out in this book that critics call
- 3:33disgusting and delightful.
- 3:35I also think this book is hilarious.
- 3:39I laughed out loud a lot
- 3:41because both characters understand
- 3:43that what they're doing is absurd
- 3:45and they say it out loud a lot.
- 3:48Like, oh my God, I can't believe I'm doing this.
- 3:50They're like, it's funny.
- 3:52It's, there's a mystery in it.
- 3:56It's sexy.
- 3:58There's a little bit of intrigue and murder.
- 4:00So if that is your kind of stick
- 4:02and you don't mind some dark stalker rom-com action,
- 4:09then I'm gonna pop the lights out.
- 4:11- Yeah, it is quite crazy.
- 4:14- Oh, did you like it?
- 4:16- Yes, yeah, it's good.
- 4:17It's silly goofy.
- 4:19It does feel like a published fan fiction.
- 4:23- Yeah.
- 4:24- For like, it's very, it was very like a time capsule.
- 4:27We are doing a book club, our friend group.
- 4:30And we were like, should we do lights out too?
- 4:32And I was like, I don't wanna do the sequel to it
- 4:35as like and have like a discussion on it.
- 4:38- Yeah, it's a big club.
- 4:39But I might be able to be brought back in to the universe
- 4:43at some point.
- 4:44It's not about the same two characters, the second book.
- 4:47But yeah, it's definitely like a very popular book talk book.
- 4:50And yeah, it's fun.
- 4:51It's a good little quick read and it's goofy,
- 4:54but it is at certain points.
- 4:57You're like, "Hit, go on.
- 4:58What am I reading?"
- 4:59- Yeah, you feel a little like disgusting for reading it,
- 5:02but then you start laughing and then you realize,
- 5:04you know what, there's horrors in the world
- 5:06I need a little goofy sometimes.
- 5:08- I would say if we ever make you culture pearls,
- 5:11do not read it.
- 5:13- That is true.
- 5:14- Don't read it.
- 5:15If pop culture junkies too much for you,
- 5:18if you couldn't get through the Shrek fan fiction episode
- 5:22with us, do not read that book.
- 5:24But if that was your thing, then this book's for you.
- 5:28- Also, on that note, we've been trying to convince
- 5:30our producers to let us do another episode.
- 5:32So if you liked that, leave us a five star review saying,
- 5:35I want more fan fiction episodes and we're there.
- 5:38We gotta show them that the people want our land sauce.
- 5:44- The people want our land sauce.
- 5:45- Olivia, can everybody watch Death of a Unicorn?
- 5:51- Death of a Unicorn is available on Prime Video.
- 5:55It is for purchase right now,
- 5:57but I think it's like four bucks per rental,
- 6:02but it's really good and I say,
- 6:04do it.
- 6:05- And you can find lights out really at any bookstore.
- 6:07You can find it on Amazon if you really want to
- 6:10or you could also listen to it.
- 6:12There is an audio book version.
- 6:13So those are gonna be our pops
- 6:15and we will see you next week for more pop culture.
