- 0:00You have arrived. Welcome to the ASPY world.
- 0:04Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:07an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 0:11spectrum, your autism Ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 0:19Here are three tips for navigating relationships whilst
- 0:23on the autism spectrum. Having Aspergers?
- 0:25Guys, What's going on? Welcome back to the aspy world.
- 0:27My name is Dan, I have autism and ADHD and week weekly videos
- 0:30all about this stuff. So if you want to learn more and

- 0:37So the first one is communication and openness.
- 0:39When you have an open communication flow between you
- 0:42and the other person, you are able to understand each other on
- 0:44a decent level. There's no kind of like unsaid
- 0:47things. There's nothing that you should
- 0:49pick up or understand because of the situation.
- 0:51If you are open and completely honest, if you say this is
- 0:54what's upsetting me, this is what I like, this is what I
- 0:57don't like. This is what doesn't work, and
- 0:59you're completely open both ways.
- 1:01Each of you know exactly where you are on the page, and there's
- 1:03no kind of, like ambiguity between you 2 about anything to
- 1:06do with the relationship. This is like #1 way to make sure
- 1:09that you stay on track and keep that relationship solid.
- 1:13OK, so #2 is developing social skills.
- 1:15Now when you're in a couple, you're a couple.
- 1:17You're a powerhouse. You have to gather and you go
- 1:18out together. You do things together.
- 1:20Yes, you do things individually, but a lot of the time you'll be
- 1:22doing things together. Now, navigating through this is
- 1:25developing social skills together to help you manage
- 1:29certain situations where you might go out and you'll develop
- 1:31social skills. These skills will be greatly
- 1:34beneficial to your relationship because then you'll be able to
- 1:36say, oh, this is what people do when they socialize.
- 1:38Or we'll go out to a bar together and then we'll buy a
- 1:40drink. And you know, what do people
- 1:42formally do? What do people do in, you know,
- 1:44going out for dinner, reservation situations, working
- 1:46out all those things and developing those social skills
- 1:49will pay dividends not only between you as a couple and your
- 1:52friends, but between you as a couple, between each other.
- 1:54That's a really, really important.
- 1:56And it's kind of like a big, big deal.
- 1:58OK, so #3 is establishing a routine and creating
- 2:01predictability. Now, people on the autism
- 2:03spectrum love predictability, right?
- 2:05They love having a routine and it sticks with because it's
- 2:07comfortable and it's safe. Now explaining this to your
- 2:09partner and creating a life together where your relationship
- 2:12has predictability within that and a routine or a schedule.
- 2:15Like you know you always go off a dinner on a Thursday night,
- 2:17you have a movie night on a Friday.
- 2:18Like all of these things that come into play for creating a
- 2:21routine, creating something that flows easy, something that you
- 2:24can remember, something that you feel comfortable with.
- 2:26All of those things will help you have the stronger bond
- 2:29together and actually help you increase your likelihood of
- 2:32having a more successful relationship.
- 2:34But it also helps the autistic person navigate through the
- 2:37relationship to make sure that they are also calm enough to
- 2:39understand where things may go wrong or things may not happen
- 2:42in a certain way. At least they have their
- 2:44predictability and routine that they can stick to, that they
- 2:46feel comfortable with. Everything else can be learned
- 2:48along the way. This is so important now.
