- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I just literally just got off of another.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I was watching my friend do like a r a recording, so I'm I I literally had like the lot ten minutes between them instead of rushing to get everything ready.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Well you seem very cool and collected, so I I get the impression you're scrambling.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I was trying to get it all done before that, and then not then in the meantime I was like rushing to get a drink and oh yeah, you gotta you gotta refresh, you know, you gotta take time to pause.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: So nice.
- 2:13unknown: Nice.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You're in uh LA at the moment?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: I am in LA, yeah, yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: I've been in LA.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: I don't really travel much, so no.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Well, especially not the moment.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I will yeah, right, exactly, exactly.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I'm homebound, so to speak.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And you do are you from LA?
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Uh well I'm from Rancho Cucamonga, which is about uh an hour, hour and a half from LA.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Um but I've been in SoCal my my whole life.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, so it's my life.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: My grandmother lives in um Orange County, but I don't visit anywhere near enough.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Hey, that's all good.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Well, that's cool that you have like a like a relative you can come come visit out there.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Orange County's nice, Orange County's great.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, there's parts of it that are nice.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Parts of it.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: I shouldn't make blatant statements about any county in in California.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: There's good parts and bad parts everywhere.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: True that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: True that.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I'm very aware of what Orange County is.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay, cool, great.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: I'm like, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: They're definitely good and bad parts.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: So there you go.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: What part of uh Orange County is she in?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Uh good part.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Honestly.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: That's all good.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: That's cool.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I it's literally been like probably 20 years since I've been there.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Well, it's only gotten better and worse at the same time.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: So um, but yeah, you've come to on today to talk about the movie year one.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Year one, uh yes.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: An interesting choice.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, I mean, you know, I'll full disclosure, I uh I'm a terrible I have terrible reading skills, so when you told me uh to pick a movie, I just kept failing miserably at picking something that fit the parameters.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: So I just I want to guys just point blank apologize for my poor reading skills because I was just like, man, I'm like struggling to find something.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Like just um all the bad movies all the bad movies I wanted to defend were just too good.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Um or they were done, I you know, because um legit one of my favorite movies of all time is heavyweights.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So I was like, oh no problem, let's go.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Let's go, yeah.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Um I can't remember that was done this season or last season.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: It might have been done last season, that's why you missed it on the list.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Or I saw well once I saw the list, I was like, oh man, everybody got all the good all the time.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's been a while.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: It's literally been like over 50 episodes at this point.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, congrats on that.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, that's to that that that's a testament to the longevity of what you're doing, and I think, you know, the fact that Yeah, and well, just you know, it's it's we all have uh we all have our opinions about movies, and I think there's a lot of underrated masterpieces, as you said.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: And uh uh I you know, hey, it's a good problem to have that there's so much there's so much that's been covered, and there's still more to cover.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's so many to cover, yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Like that the the list I sent you is just like a fraction of what there is as well.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it's just I chall challenge accepted, man.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: It's all good.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I can't even remember if you picked something from is that was that even on the list or did you find that?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Uh oh, year one was it was just a movie that I watched the other night.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Uh like when I when I sent the when I made the tweet about uh you know podcast whatever.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Um I had been well, I'm a very stressed-out person.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: I like to watch silly movies to decompress, knowing that they're not, you know, high art or whatever.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm kind of the same.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: I mean I think I think there's something to I think there's something to be said about movies like year one in general that are um that are kind of soothing to that part of the brain.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Uh I think probably in the same way that like people who watch like Two Broke Girls or like those other sitcoms that are Big Bang Theory or whatever, I think there's something very comforting and just that type of content.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: And uh I just also watched like Your Highness, I think, uh like that same night, I think that I tweeted that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: But um specifically quite the night.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and no, well, specifically year one stood out just because it is such um it is it is so what it is, you know.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: That's a strange one.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: It's such a strange so you so you watched it, yeah?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: For the first time, I watched it today.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I watched it this morning.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Congratulations, man.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: How do you feel?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Uh we'll get into it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: I told you challenge accept it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Um it's 14% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and 23% from the audience.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: And so this morning I would I messaged some friends and I was like, have you ever seen Year One before?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And one person wrote back, Yes, unfortunately.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we love to hear it.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's so good.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: You know, my theory on every percentage point that is positive on this movie is for each star cast member that's in the film.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: And there's a lot, and so they all get 1%, and that's why, you know, that's why it's 14 to 23% on uh Rotten Tomatoes.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: This uh we have to acknowledge, we have to acknowledge this cast, and and we also have to acknowledge that this is what this is Harold Ramis's uh I looked this, I didn't know this actually.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: This is Harold Ramis' last movie he wrote and directed.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: So this is what weird because it was like six years before he died as well.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is what he hangs his hat on.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: So um It went out Yeah.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm a huge Harold Ramis fan as well.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so congratulations on watching his this is his this was his his um, you know, not it maybe not his opus, yeah, his Swan Song.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: That's the term I was looking for.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: So congratulations.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Only a true Harold Ramis fan would watch year one.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: So it's also written by the two people who made the the American version of The Office.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Co-written by them and Harold Remus.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: So and I'm a big office fan as well.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and American Office, you know, I I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: For the most part, um but the cast is absolutely huge.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: It's um Jack Black and Michael Serra are the two leads.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: They're the two leads.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Then you've got then you've got David Cross, you've got Hank Azaria, you've got Olivia Wilde, you've got uh Vinny Jones, Oliver Platt, Juno Temple.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: There's so many.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: You've got Bill Hader is a is a shaman.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Bill Haider?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: He's the shaman in in uh blackface.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Um I did write that down.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: I was like, um, I told you I'm not afraid of a challenge.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, oh yeah, we've got we've got Paul Redd, we've got Kyle Gass, we've got Paul Shear.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Talk about uncredited as well.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: I don't blame him, man.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, once you once you once you're brought into the Marvel family, maybe maybe you have to take me out of that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you gotta think about your IMDB, uh your IMDB a little more uh critically.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it's it's you know, it's like I joked about this on Twitter.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Um it's just a movie with a bunch of friends in it, having a laugh, you know?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, really, and you know what what gets me even more than the movie is that like the the credits are a very gratuitous um blooper fest.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: But the bloopers are just them like laughing at each other, and it's not like you know There's nothing funny about it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: There's nothing funny, it's just it's it was I kept like skipping through them because I was like, this isn't actually funny.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: No, but but it's it it it stands to reason that these are just a bunch of friends who just wanted to hang out and have and goof off for um a generous 90 minutes, or is it even is it even a hundred minutes?
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: It's a whole hundred minutes.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: It's a hundred minutes.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: It's a whole hundred minutes, man.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: It doesn't that's great.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: It yeah, this I'm surprised that it's like even stretches to a hundred minutes to be honest, because it's like not a whole lot that happens.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's not it's it's a lot of um turning the camera on Jack Black and letting him just play jazz, you know?
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: One thing that I noticed about it was it's a lot of um they go to a place, they get in trouble, they get kidnapped, they free themselves, they go to another place, they get kidnapped, they free themselves.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: It's like that about four or five times in this movie.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And that's just how it keeps going.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: It's that's that's such as life, you know.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, I think it's I I I think it's impressive that they managed to stretch this to a hundred minutes.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, again, the bloopers are the bloopers are a good what probably like 20 minutes of it, so uh, you know, it's it's it's of its time, and I think it also is just a movie that is I don't you know it's just it's just it's just fluff, man.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: And listen, it's it really is I'll tell you what, I've never read the Bible, but I know what it is now, yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: I get the gist of it from you.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: I'm kidding, I have read the Bible.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I, you know, but uh uh I think this this movie, if you didn't know what the Bible was, I think this and Jesus Christ Superstar really cover a lot of a lot of the text.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Um That's what you need to know.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: You know, you just need to know kind of like the basic anecdotes about like Gable and Cain and and Isaac and the um, you know, they go they we we finally know where circumcision came from.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: That was um that was plaguing me in my mind.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, uh yeah, yeah.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Um so for anyone who hasn't seen it, um the basic plot is it's literally year one of and so like uh these prehistoric hunters are kind of banished from a tribe after eating forbidden fruit, and they go uh they go on like a not a hunt, they like they just go on a like adventure basically and they keep getting stopped along the way uh on these like weird things that happen to them like that happen to have been things from the Bible, so it was like Cain and Abel, or like you said, there's the there's a thing about circumcision you learn for the first time.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Uh I I know I know what circumcision is.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: But yeah, uh I know, I'm saying you know how it they shows how it came to be.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: And well now we know where it came from.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: It shows Sodom and Gomorrah, it shows yeah, so you know like you get various things along the way.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: And in in the meantime, they're also going to kind of try and protect the two women that they're in love with.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Um basically who have been enslaved as well.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Um the the love is really deep, you know.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: They both the it's it's a couple of the it's the prettiest ladies in the tribe.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Um the tribe of sixty people, I believe.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, tribe of sixty people.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: I I just I also really love just like the aesthetic, the range of aesthetic that this film covers.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: There's cavemen, like, but they start out as cavemen.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I you know, I'm not gonna lie, I didn't know anything about this movie when I put it on, so other than I had seen, I think I'd seen a trailer once, you know, when it when it came out a decade ago or or or so, and um I just thought it was about cave people.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: So did I.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I really did as well.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I was expecting it all to be about cave people.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was really surprised when it you know, I felt I'm not gonna lie, I felt like low-key betrayed when the Bible Skiff card started coming in because it kind of reminded me of Last Man on Earth when it's like he's actually not the last man on earth.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: There's a bunch of people still on Earth.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, I guess they wouldn't have a show anymore.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: But uh Yeah, there's no way they could have made the last man on earth with just him for an entire show.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, Will Forte is one charismatic dude, and I'm I'm a huge fan of the and honestly, that first episode is great as well.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: It's the it's so good, it's probably it's it's one of the best pilots I've ever watched.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Um it really is.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: But uh, but I didn't continue watching the series super, super far after that, sadly.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: But I really liked it as a it's a really good overall.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: It ends on a cliffhanger, which is sad.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Listen, because they got cancelled.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: If it's if it's if it's even half as good as year one, I'll give it a shot.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: It's a lot better than year one.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know, man.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Those that's a big that's a big prompt.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna come for you if it's if it's not.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Where did you get to in it?
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Do you remember?
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Oh gosh.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: I think I I think I finished I finished the first season of uh of Last Man on Earth.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was I enjoyed it.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: I did enjoy it.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: I think I think I'm just You just felt betrayed.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm just so I was I just I just think the title's a lie.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: No, what it is is I'm really bad at watching stuff in general, which is, you know, I it's so easy for me to turn on something that's fluff and low stakes like year one, because you know, I don't I can I can go full laundry, I could, you know, I can do it, you know, I can I can decompress and have that going.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: But watching something that requires full absorption, um can't can't even when it's really good can be uh a challenge.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: I've like stopped um what's it called?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Um Better Call Soul.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, because it's just like exactly because I'm just like I have to really focus and like put the effort in.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: That's uh that's but I love it, but it's just like such a good example, such a good example.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Um I'm just like I don't have the energy for it right now.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm I'm like constantly exhausted.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: I have ADHD, I'm easily, you know, absorbed into other things.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I've watched and I've watched a few episodes of Better Call Salt.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Fantastic show.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Um But I mean, even Breaking Bad, it took me, it took me a long time to like sit down and watch it because everybody, every you know, when everybody's pushing a show on you, it starts to feel like vegetables.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh I gotta like I have to do this thing because of you know so then I finally did watch it and then then it you know it it triggered that thing in the brain where you're highly absorbed and you feel kind of exhausted at the end of those um that's the thing, yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Viewing experiences.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Year one doesn't do that to you.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: It doesn't do that at all.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: It doesn't do that to you.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: You want to know something's very funny, I just noticed, by the way, is that I'm looking at the IMDB page for it, and the very first movie it recommends after uh is for more like this, it says Your Highness.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: No, you know what?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: I wonder if that's a coincidence or or if it is also It's something that you noticed.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: If you picked up on it without realizing on Netflix, it was the next thing recommended after I finished.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: You know, that it gives you like a trio of movies, and and that's um that's how that Your Highness came back on my radar.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Because I remember when Your Highness came out in theaters and um uh I was like, this looks this looks pretty awful and weird.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Uh and I didn't see it, but you know, I almost was gonna reach out to you because I could have I could have gone either way with which movie to talk about because I have you know I have opinions about both.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Your highness actually, not to hijack because someone else could talk about that movie.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I don't want to take away that opportunity from them, but there's some genuinely funny moments in Your Highness.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I've never seen it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: I would give it away after well, after watching year one, I watched Your Highness after watching year one.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: So just to give you context, Your Highness was like a very well-made movie in comparison to Year One.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, the special they had special effects in it that were like a little ooh, woo-y, and um, there's some genuinely very funny moments um in Your Highness that another big cast as well.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: And another big cast, and some really good people that actually like had some good moments that it made me kind of it made me kind of sad because I was like, you know what?
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: This what sucks about watching something like your when you watch year one, you're like, year one is year one.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: It it had to be that.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: But when you watch something like your highness, there's a moment where you're like, oh, this almost could have been good.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Like this almost could have been like legitimately like the 50% or more type of Rotten Tomatoes comedy.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I remember seeing the trader and thinking in thinking it'll go either way.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: And then it went the bad way.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, that's the the trouble is it's sort of like I think year one revels in this with Jack Black, where it's just it's just shamelessly like plugged into his very uh idiosyncratic, um actually the better word I was looking for was um and uh uh no not an acronym.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's acting very casual in these high-stakes situations.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: They they do that with Danny McBride and Your Highness, but it's it doesn't quite it doesn't work in either of them.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: But in Your Highness, it's like I you know, we've seen Danny McBride do like such funny stuff, like in a very in very committed, stubborn, immature character roles, which is very because he's like the he's the less cool younger brother of this like very accomplished knight, James Franco.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: But and but what sucks is everyone around Danny McBride is killing it because they're really leaning and hamming up the stylized James Franco even it's like I'm laughing my ass off at James Franco, and Danny McBride, you can tell, is supposed to be the funny person in the scene who's like, Yeah, whatever, you guys are stupid, you know, and he's like getting high.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: But James Franco's like, what does what what does that trouble my brother?
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: You know, he's like he's so overwhelmed with like bravado.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and there's this moment where he and and Zoe De Chanel is his bride in it, and so Zoe De Chanel's doing her Zoe De Chanel singing, and all of a sudden James Franco breaks into song, and it's really, really funny because he does such a bad job.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Um and and it's it's like and the movie was like self-aware enough to like like let you enjoy those moments with it, but then it then you get pulled out of it, which kind of So is it that he's like straight manning it too much then, Danny McBride?
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: It's weird, and it it's he's not um I don't know if I just I I don't vibe with the formula in general uh of this guy who's just kind of like whatever guys, we just need to smoke some noobs and chill out, you know, and then everybody else is like caught up in these heights, and they're like, what is this?
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: A duob or whatever, you know, it's um like uh kid in King Arthur's Court type of vibes, which um I mean that's a that of course is a good movie, but I think there's a lot of riffing on that premise in these these um these period type comedies where you bring in the this funny stoner character or whatever, and it's almost like I would have preferred if they just kind of, you know, if they really just let everybody go go ham on on this, you know.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: And Danny McBrown, we've seen him go ham, you know, you watch the Righteous Gem style.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Or East Mountain Town, you know.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: He does it very well.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: He does it so well.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: And I think for whatever reason, he's in these scenes, and it's this weird, there's just like this tonal dissonance with his character versus everyone else who's really like, you know, you have what's his face, who's um Charles Dance is the father in that, and you know, and he's and he's playing it like just like he does play, like just like he plays the the Patriarch Lannister in Game of Thrones, and he's and he's like he's enjoying himself, you know, and that's fun to watch.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Like um, and and even uh uh uh uh um um Natalie Portman is in it, and she's she's um we're not even talking about year one right now.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I'm just quick.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: But it just I'm I think that it's great to compare the two because it's yeah.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Year one is interesting, is like year one is like shamelessly bad, and your highness was like almost good, and there's something to be said about what it it it hurts more to watch your highness because you're like man because of what it could have been.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, it could have been 50% or more.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: No, it's not, it's it's not, but you know what?
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: I th I think of it in terms of like Tenacious Depict of Destiny, which is like that's around that 50% category, and it's it's polarizing, but it's it's of a certain taste.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you know, it could have been another movie it's recommending right underneath here.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Which I think Tenacious, but obviously because it's Jack Black.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Yes, and it's and it's I mean, it's definitely you you watch that after watching year one, and you're again, it's like, wow, this is a masterpiece.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: This is this is a I I like Pick of Destiny, I remember that being funny.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Love Pick of Destiny.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: I just watched it with my boyfriend um a few nights ago because he had never seen it, and um, you know, just the Netflix algorithm's been carrying us along as last year.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Pick of men used so many like stone accommodations.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Well I it's and it's it it knows me so well, you know.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: Um but that it's just Pick of Destiny is is oh that's such a fun movie too.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: But it's it it's it's it's a movie where the full the full thing is ham, you know.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: I think that's a good example of a movie where everybody is in on the joke together and they are they're coalescing their their uh their performances around the same idea.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: They they have the same idea together, whereas your highness, there's dissonance.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Um year one, they're all around it, but it's it's just it's it just is dumb.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: It's just really dumb.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Um I personally think David Cross is the best character in this, as Kane.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: I love I I I I like stand by that with you, I think.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: I think he he he is someone who is so good at taking a dumb it's something that's so absurd, like you know, when he's on um when he's been on arrested development and he's playing a character that's a never nude, or like he he is someone who's so gifted at being able to sell lines like I just blew myself.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, it's like I I have some great scenes in this that are just like so insane and ridiculous and just they're the ones that made me laugh.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Whenever he was on screen, I was laughing, and then when he's not on screen, I was just kind of like When's he coming back?
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: No, not not only that, I was just like, when where is the funny stuff?
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Because Jack Black.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Ugh, I I I love Jack Black, but he's not funny in this.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's it's uh it's like too much of a good thing.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: You got too many sprinkles on the donut, is how it is maybe how it is, right?
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: I get what you're saying with with David Cross, he he has this delivery and just every everything about him is really, really funny.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: And um he has a moment that I love towards the end.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Um it get a lot of the jokes in year one get undercut with like an unnecessary commentary right after the joke is made.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you notice that.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Um this would have been like such a funny moment, and then it gets undercut because they cut back to him right after.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: But he's like the everybody in the town's fighting, and David Cross is this huge guy in front of him, but he's he's David Cross is like, I'm gonna kick your ass.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Like he's just like so excited to be to like fight this guy, and the guy just like knocks him out right away.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: And that that right there was like a great moment, but then it cuts to the it cuts to him on the ground like I should have seen that coming, and it's like you didn't have to do that.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: That was that's but then I don't blame that on David Cross.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: That's a no, that's not him, that's on the writer's.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the writing and direction thing where they they're all commenting on the or like when the guy falls into that the the fire pit thing, yeah, and then they it cuts back to Michael Sarah, like, oh that looks like an error.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: It's like you don't have to do those.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: It's just like the announcement, it's it's just announcing every joke and really like like pointing it out to the audience, this is the joke, this is what's supposed to be funny, and it's just like, well, okay, we can see that ourselves, we don't have we're not idiots.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: No, no, but I mean, you know, if you're if you're really high and you're not and you're only like half paying attention because you're on your phone or you're or you're you know feeding your cat or something.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Um you know, those signals, those signals do indicate uh that a joke happened and that you are watching a comedy.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, I mean one thing we haven't covered.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: How many times have you seen this?
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: Is it just the I've just watched it like one and a half times now.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: So um I'm still like the way that you described the plot helped me understand the plot better.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: I was also really, really, really high when I watched it the first time.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: Even what a surprise.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: No, well, come on.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I gotta I have to I have to watch this as it was intended, you know.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: It's like to go from this to your highness and you weren't high.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's it's the movie is not made for you if that you did that's not what you're doing.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: It's like you don't watch Rocky Horror alone in your living room, you go see it at the theater with a bag of rice, you know?
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Uh you you and you gotta watch uh you gotta you gotta watch Year One Stone.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: You gotta watch your highness.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: These movies that sort of glorify like smoking weed, there's like an art to it.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Um and it's not, I mean, I think I'd like the one of the best examples would be obviously like like Pineapple Express or something like that.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: They they've really they really nailed that stoner culture, but there's a lot of other movies that are like trying to kind of be like it's funny because there's weed, right?
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: It's funny because you know, we're talking about we're talking about dicks or whatever, but um, you know, I think this is a movie that was uh just a fun time for everyone involved, you know.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: That's what that's if nothing else, you know you know that you know that um Harold Ramus had a good time with all his buddies.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just seems like it's one of those movies that it's almost well it's an Apatal production as well, so it's almost in that realm.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Just not quite.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Not quite.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: It feels like it's definitely um yeah, it's definitely of that family.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Like the the the cast is like the Apatow clan, you know, like it's like it's halfway there.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: But it's so there's so many though, you know?
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Like it's man.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: So there's Michael Serra and Christopher Mintz Flash.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Um who else is part of the Apotel?
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: That's about it, actually.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Well, you well, you got I would say Paul Rudd is in that family.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, Paul Rudd, yeah.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: I would say Bill Hader's in that family.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: I keep forgetting they're in it.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Well, because everybody kind of just showed up to shoot their scene.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they only really have like one or two lines each.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's uh that's the thing about these kinds of movies, too, is it's like when you have two characters kind of traveling through or doing whatever, and then it's just a it's basically just a slew of like sketches or half sketches.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: That's literally what this is, yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: And everybody's just kind of uh uh showing up for one sh day shoot and hanging out and you know, doing doing their secret handshakes and then uh and then smoking a fat ass blunt afterwards.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, yeah.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I guess maybe it's more of yeah, it's not totally a jet apateau, but it's like kind of that that's like a cousin, it's like a care bear cousin to the PG 13, I've just noticed.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I would have thought it was an R rating, but I'm yeah, interesting.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: They definitely wanted to to push in that direction with like the the the dick jokes and and what have you.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, but it there's an inherent immaturity that is just difficult to ignore about about the uh film.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: I'm just noticing now as well, it was there was an original uncut version which was an R.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: I don't think that one's I don't think that's the one that is on Nets.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Um Interesting.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's And if apparently if you buy the UK version on video, it's a 15, which is an R rating.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Oh my.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: So not that I saw it on video, but no, no, you do did you watch it on Netflix or Yeah.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Well not on Netflix, but yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: Or just use draw.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: We don't have net we didn't have it on Netflix here.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, gotcha.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: We didn't have this or your highness, actually.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: That's terrible.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: You guys are missing out.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: God.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Um but so let's kind of talk through let's kind of talk through the movie then and see if like see how much you you remember of it as well.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Alright, let's let's go through it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Let's test my my little stoner brain.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, so it opens it opens with Zed, uh played by Jack Black, and he's like kind of a loser in his uh uh what they're called, uh tribe of um what are they?
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: They're the hunter-gatherers or yeah, like three of yeah, like hunter-gatherers.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Homo sapien.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And his best friend is O, played by Michael Serra.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: This is just Michael Sarah, just yeah, literally just Michael Sarah's character.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Like both of them are just themselves, just turned up.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Um then like Z but he thinks he's like Zed thinks he's a little bit of like a tough guy, but he's not at all.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Uh he rethinks a lot of himself, um, and he's in love with this character, Maya.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Um, and they make this whole joke about oh, she's got um she's so sexy, but she has armpit hair.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: And like that's the immediate that that's the one of the first jokes in the movie, and like the first thing that I was like, oh, this is dated already.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of um, there's a lot of weird misogynist jokes that are made throughout this movie that are uh pretty darn cringe.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah, yeah, that's definitely one of them.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: So he's in love with her, and O is in love with Ema, uh but who's Juno Temple's character.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: And also Ema is also Zed's sister, but it's like never really like addressed beyond saying they are brother and sister.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Wow, I didn't even I don't think I even picked up on that one uh when I watched, but yeah, that's it's that must be a lot of things.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: They say it once at the start, and then it's like forgotten about.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: It didn't need to be even be a thing.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: So random.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Because it's not like it's not like an awkward thing, and it's not like a proud thing as well.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: So like why is that even I think they they only maybe make that joke to imply the incestuousness of the of the tribe, maybe.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: That's true, possibly.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but then it's like they don't even exert they don't even have any kind of interaction as siblings.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: So I do remember there is a joke actually where he says to him, Um, he goes, That's my sister, um, and he goes, Yeah, but you also slept with your mother once, and he's like, Yeah, that was awkward the next day, so there is like the Yeah, yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: There's uh maybe it's just to make that joke.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: That's a lot of the humor of it, is it's very like conversational, like, oh, oh yeah, fuck my mom, or oh yeah, you know, we're gonna cut off your forescale.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: You know, it's everything is so like kind of casually said, and then and then the other characters like, mmm, I don't know about that.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: That was weird.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: Can you believe this guy?
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: This guy.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: But Zed goes and eats um the forbidden apple, the forbidden fruit, uh, and gets told by Oh, like, don't do it, you're gonna get us in trouble and everything.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: And and then he's like, basically he's caught eating the fruit.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: And because of that, he is b they are banished.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Um but in the meantime after he's caught eating the fruit, he goes and sits with the shaman played by Bill Hayter.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: And this is what I really want to talk about.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: I really want to talk about this because it's so like why is Bill Hader in blackface?
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: What is going on?
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: He even acknowledges it in the um in the uh bloopers.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: He's basically saying, like, this is like inappropriate, or like he's basically acknowledging.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: So he's aware of it.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: I think, yeah, I think I think it's it's um it's a it's a big old cringe.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: It's a big old cringe.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think you know, you can maybe make the argument that like it's not he's he's not doing like that kind of blackface or whatever, but I mean it's still there, it's obvious, I'm not defending, it's still horrible, horribly inappropriate, but like the argument I think maybe from the people making it would be that like, oh no, this is just like more of a not that kind of blackface, but it's still it still is like an indigenous peoples culture.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's kind of like it's I I feel like it's the last kind of point in time where you could get that in a movie.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: I think you know what one reason why year one gets away with it is because it is such a discounted film.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Like it's so it's it's already just like it is, it is um, it's it's we all know it's we all know it's dumb and and stupid and whatever that we don't even we're not gonna stop and go, oh my god, that scene with the black, you know, because it's like, well, yeah, it's year one.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, you know.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: That's that's definitely a cringe moment for sure.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: It's kind of the first moment where I was like, oh no, oh no, what is this?
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: What's gonna happen?
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: What's the rest of this movie gonna bring?
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: What's this gonna bring?
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: But basically, they get exiled from the two of them get exiled from No, sorry, Zed get exiled, and O decides to follow him follow him along on their journey.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Um and there's this whole thing of like Zed says, um There's no basically everyone believes that there's like a a um the earth is flat and there's a cutoff point, basically, and and Zed's like, no, there's not, we can keep going, we can keep going, and and like it turns out they can keep going.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: And they they find they like wander across Cain and Abel who uh David Cross and Paul Rudd.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Uh who are just like fighting brothers who are like jealous of each other, yeah, bickering brothers.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: It's one of the funniest scenes in the movie.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's great.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Because they get into a huge fight, um, Kane starts beating Abel with a rock and kills him and and realizes what he only realizes what he's done like afterwards, and like because he's kind of like blacked out into like this fit of rage.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: I love I love that he it's at first it seems that it's just oh yeah, it's just a fit of rage or whatever, and he he hits him with the boulder, and then afterwards, what have I done?
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: What have I done?
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: And then then Paul Reddit stirs and he's like, No, I've beaten him.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: And he does it like twice more after that, like just so no one's like what have I continued to do?
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: What have I continued to do?
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: It's just such a great line.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: And his just again, the way he talks, his delivery, and can't like his what have I done?
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Like it's so very presentational quality about his voice that's like I think John Mullaney has that too, where it's a very there's something very it always sounds like they're doing a like a Johnny Carson thing, even while they're in character.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Um that's a it is a good that is a great moment.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: Just as it's satisfying watching those actors, or specifically, you know, watching David Cross, you know, because he's you know just naturally funny.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Like basically he wants to like he kind of blackmails them and he's like, um, well, you two could get in trouble too, because you were here and you didn't stop me or anything, so just come along with me, we'll go to stay at my place.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: And so he takes them along to this like big uh town, I guess, and they s they go and stay at his house uh alongside like his whole family.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: And it's um there's like the sister that stays there, um the sister and the brother that are there, and basically they they have to go and stay in their rooms, and as Zed goes and stays with the sister, and he's like immediately like trying to hit on her, thinks he's gonna sleep with her, and she's like, No, I'm a lesbian, and she keeps making the it it just goes on and on and on.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that scene went on for a while.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: But I you know what I will say, it is I I did laugh when that's happening, and then it and then it cuts to Michael Sarah.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: And there's the and that scene that scene like lost steam very quickly too, but I loved the junk cut of that to the like the freaky like brother's face over Michael Sarah, just like the face is funny, and then there's a lot of fart jokes.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: It's a lot of I it could have just been just like a quick cut of like that and a fart and then cutting like it would if they were like maybe just a little more dexterous in the way they cut between those two realities.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: I think I think it could have ascended its percentage.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: One point, two point.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it makes it more funny, like it would have made it better.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because that that brother's face is really, really freaking funny when you first.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: I had to look him up as well.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I was like, I don't know who that is even.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Who is I don't think I did look up that guy.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: Which guy was he?
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: Gabriel Sunday, his name is.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: What is he?
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I don't I don't know I don't know him from anything.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: He's not really a big uh his last thing is 2015.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: I okay well he he had a funny he was he was he had a funny face.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Very funny face.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: He was funny.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so they uh basically they I can't remember how this happens, but they get chased on yaks.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: They run away.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: I don't remember how that happens.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: I again I was that high's okay.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, it's I mean at some point They leave the three of them leave on a yak.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: Like sitting on a yak and like the the dad chases them away.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: I don't remember what oh, it's because they find out that Kane killed Abel.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, there you go.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Um so they run away on the yak.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: That's the I mean some some some sort of justification for them getting out of that situation.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: Getting out of that sketch to the next sketch is what But there is the scene is funny in itself because they're like they're going very, very slowly and they're like throwing up because it's so intense for them.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: It's it's and you just see a guy walking next to them because of how slow it is, and it's just a dumb joke, but it's funny.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Um and they run into they go into I believe they go to Sodom at this point.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Uh and they run into Maya and Ema.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because at that point they're yeah, they've been captured as sl like little sexy slaves.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they've kept captured as slaves, and so they try and buy them back, but end up getting captured themselves.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: Which is another thing of like they keep getting captured.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Um they immediately escape.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Um and fall asleep in the desert.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: And this is when they run into Abraham.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: That was funny and stupid, too.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: That was what is the joke that he made?
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm not I'm not stacked, I'm doing a stab stab.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: I don't remember what that line was.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: I don't remember what the line is.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: I do like Hank Azaria though.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: He was someone who I like again, I think like different actors came in with different ideas of how to play their characters, and some of them played it more detached and ironic, but Hank Azaria played it very like very straight, like, like more of that like 90s comedy.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: He plays it very Yeah, he plays it in that Simpson style, I think, which is like obvious to him because like it because of who he is, but like he plays it in that style of The way the jokes are said and yeah.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: And it kind of works.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: I think it kind of works.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: I like his energy.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: It's refreshing after you see, especially when there's that whole temple or god, unless that came after.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: I'm getting scenes mixed up, but it was a lot of especially with the girls, um, their love interests, there's a lot of chatty, like ironic detached humor happening.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: So it's fun to see something that's a bit more like stylized, you know.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: One thing I'm wondering now now that it's kind of been talked about a little bit, now that it's kind of I'm thinking of whether if whether it was a case of um Howard Ramers' style and Judd Apertel's style clashing too much.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: That's a good oh, that's a really good question, actually.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: I don't know how like how much was Judd well he produced it, yeah.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Um He would have been on set.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: That's interesting because I wonder if it was too much of that, and that's why it like kind of doesn't work together as a whole.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm wondering that too, actually.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: That's a really good question.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: You brought you like I literally didn't think of that until just now.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: Well, and with the writers of The American Office, which is its own comedic style, you know.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's all very like look at the camera winking and like.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: It's very muggy, and it's a lot of calling out a joke that is just made to like really land the joke.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: So that that that makes sense too.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Um that's a good question.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: It's performed like a two too many cooks.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: Too many, too many, too many cooks, uh uh and too many fart jokes.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Too many cooks, too many fart jokes.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: Um but by the same token, so much greatness in one film, right?
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Like there are some great moments in it.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: I will I will say that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: There are some great moments.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: I I I commend you for really like, you know, stepping up to the plate with taking with taking on this film as a subject, but yeah, I mean, I think I think movies like this have to exist, you know.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: I think they they're they're necessary, and if any, if nothing else, it helps everyone involved really just kind of stretch and play and and has set so they can set a mold and then break it, you know.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: And then then then they can proceed to exceed our expectations, Jack Black and Michael Sarah, you know.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, back so like back to the Abraham thing.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's about to kill Isaac, uh, who's Christopher Mintz Plass, and so it's an another so like Michael Sarah's had like a lot of reunions in this movie.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Like it's a re it's a reunion of um him and David Cross, and then there's a reunion of him and Christopher Mintz Place, who would they would have just been in super bad together.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Um they basically the Abraham's about to kill Isaac I can't remember why, but for some reason, and they stop him and uh he like Jack Black said announces like this whole thing about like oh God sent me here to do all this just to get it out to get them out of it.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Then uh Isaac Abraham wants to circumcise them all.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: There's this really cool thing he's just like discovered or whatever that that's that's what God wants.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: He's like, I want I'm not gonna cut the whole thing off, just the tip.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: It's not the whole thing, just the tip, just the tip.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Don't worry.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: Like he kind of acknowledges that it's still like don't worry, it's not the whole thing.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: So it's not a crazy idea, it's just yeah, it's just the tip.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: Just the tip.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: It's so stupid and gross.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I but Henka's area, I think, like, I think he yeah, he does a good job.
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: He does a good job selling selling that bit.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: Um but it is what but then everybody else is playing it, like really like uh, oh this guy's weird, like you know yeah, yeah.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so they uh basically they all run away.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: The two of them run away, and then uh Isaac follows them and they end up in uh they run away to Sodom and get captured.
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: Another instance.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: Um but they are about to be Oh, yeah, they get c they get captured and taken to this like this place where they're about to be sodomized.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Um which is a whole thing in itself.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: Um lie, you love this movie.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: I can see it in your face.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: This is you you took you you enjoyed this movie, come on.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: It was a struggle to get through.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: But Kane wanders out at that moment and he's like, Oh, uh, let me at them first, and he and then he spots that it's the two of them and he's like, Oh, it's my brothers, I love you.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: And it's like stops them.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: He's so good.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: He manages to get them guards jobs.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: Um, I remember yeah, I remember that.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: But have you not remembered it until that point?
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: No, I know I do remember I everything you're saying, I'm like, no, I remember that.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: But uh uh I was getting the point where they're slaves and then becoming guards.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: I've gotten that a little bit conflated.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's all kind of like weaved into the other, isn't it?
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: Like so.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: That's the thing, is like, you know, again, like them just kind of being like, we're one place, oh we gotta run away.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, now we're in this other place.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: So the timeline for me has been a little bit a little bit jumbly wumbly.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: And all the places kind of look at similar as well?
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the other thing too.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Um but uh I'm I'm right with I'm I'm with you.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: I'm right there with you, man.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: We're good.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: But yeah, they get so they get the the guards' jobs and they're like obviously useless at it.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: Uh they just get told to like wander the streets and to like kill people if or like slice things off if they need to.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: Um and then we meet the high priest who like brings in the intestines in the scene, and it's horrible, and he's like doing like a a reading of the intestines.
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: That's so gross.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of like the most it's the most graphic scene in the movie.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: There's I mean, and that's saying something too, because there's some pretty gross, stupid stuff that happens throughout it, but um like the eunuch testicle.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's so gross.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: Um Wow, I made a I made a choice.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: I made a choice.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: It wouldn't be the first time people are regretting it as we go through a movie.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, oh man.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I gotta, we gotta come on, come on, Chelsea.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: Come on, come on, girl.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: We meet in Anna, who's uh in Anna, in Anna.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: Uh basically Olivia Wilde, who's the princess.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: And she's supposed to be like this well-loved princess.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: She's loved by the whole of the town and everything.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: She's a nice lady, nice lady.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: And she's fasting because nobody else can eat at the moment.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: She's like, how could I eat if no one else can?
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: I couldn't bring that, I couldn't do that to them.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's so good.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: She's so good.
- 51:55SPEAKER_00: But in the meantime, they're like sacrificing virgins.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's that's you know, there's like dissonance going on there, obviously.
- 52:04SPEAKER_02: Um but they you we they want you to we we we want to like her, you know, as a good as a good guy.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean like she's not she's not personally sacrificing the virgins, like it's just part of what's going on in the in the town.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: But you it turns out that Maya and Ima are slaves there, and Maya um dresses up and like sneaks um sneaks them in to the to the the uh where is it?
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: It's like uh a brothel almost.
- 52:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like an orgy fest thing.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: She's got the that see that's one of the scenes I mixed up plot-wise, but yeah, I remember that where they're they're going into this thing and the the one of them is she's got the plate of the food, and then the other girl, like she's got her little little thingy on her face.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: Uh and then Inana wants uh Zed to end, like they get she gets into a conversation with Zed, and she's like, basically, I want you to go and do me a favor and go into the holy of holies.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: Um to sh to prove I can't I don't even know what to prove.
- 53:13SPEAKER_02: I don't I was I'm still confused about that too.
- 53:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like she he needs to like it's like a purity test, like for something, and he he fails it, like, or whatever.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: I just like what I what I picked up on is like he's supposed to go in there and like not like if he's the chosen one, it's it's supposed to I mean I could just like cheat and read the wiki, but I didn't want to I was trying to be pure about this, but um I'm not I'd I'm I'm I'm I'm a messy girl.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Um tell or what it's like thinking that he's the ch Yeah he's the chosen one.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: Inside the temple he encounters Oh, who is hiding from the high priest.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: So basically while they're in they they they get into an argument while they're in there and um Kane is eavesdropping because he's because of course he is, yeah, and um basically rats them out that they went into um I think that they went in there, he rats them out a bit.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: He's such a messy character because he's gonna be able to do it.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he has like no consistency, does he?
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: He's so messy.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: It's like we love David Cross, but yeah, what a messy character.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: I think he's just so charismatic, they're like, okay, we just need to keep bringing him back to like kind of help tie things up, to tie things together.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: He's the he's the like the the kind of like lead across the whole of the movie.
- 54:35SPEAKER_00: Like without him, he wouldn't be he's the glue, not the lead, but like the glue, yeah.
- 54:38SPEAKER_02: The glue he's the mayo of this this um sandwich of a certain type of a certain type.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: Um but basically they get imprisoned for this um and sentenced to stoning to death.
- 54:57SPEAKER_00: Uh but while they're up there, they're like picking out uh they're like, oh no, why don't we pick out who stones us?
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't that be fair?
- 55:04SPEAKER_00: And they pick out um a little boy who like throws these like he keeps hitting Michael Sarah in the head with things like how has he got such an arm?
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: And like and Michael Sarah's like also, you know there's it's just two of us up here, it's not just me.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: That was I like I do like that trope in general, like that it's uh it's a common one where it's like, oh, do I want the little guy?
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: It's like expected, but it's funny.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's something satisfying about some of those, you know, those.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: Because at first they pick the eunuch and he's like, oh, you think you can pick me because um because I haven't got my testicles, and he like pulls out one from his bag and like throws it and hits him in the face.
- 55:44SPEAKER_02: It's it's I like I like it.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: And everyone there is just like, oh, that's disgusting.
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: That's so gross.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: That's so gross.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I like the subversion of like uh the you know, oh I'll take on the scrawny guy or whatever, and the scrawny guy's like super intimidating.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's some nasty that that was definitely one of the nastiest scenes, I think.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: That was yeah, yeah.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to think, yeah.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: Well, like the one like that in the intestines is yeah.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: Other than that, it's more just like frat dumb humor, but yeah, there's not a whole lot, but yeah.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: It's not too bad.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: But basically they he Zed convinces manages to like do this whole speech and convince them that he is the chosen one.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: And um because of this, because he went into the Holy of Holies and was like fine.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: So they're like, oh okay, maybe you are, but so now you we'll just sentence you to hard labour instead.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: Uh in the meantime, um Inana, Maya, and Ima.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: I just like check those names.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: Those names are so unfun to say.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: All of the names in this movie just They're not great names.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: Um they are sentenced to death for lying and for knowing about all of this going on.
- 57:02SPEAKER_02: And but also, but there's like it's a it's a virgin sacrifice too?
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: Or yes, the three of them are virgins, so they're just also the yeah, because that's like a that's a major thing, the de-virginizing or whatever.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah, that was a little confusing for me.
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: So like Jack Black goes to stop them and like knocks a whole load of things down, and and they're all like and then uh Michael Sarah yells out, oh the chosen one comes, and like so everyone gets on their side basically, and there's a whole riot, and in the meantime, like to get all everything stopped.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: Oh and Ema run into the temple and in the Holy of Holies, and they have sex in there to like save her.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: But like it's it, he's like basically it's it's like uh or like whatever, I just I liked you this whole time.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: And it's weird because there's like no chemistry, and she's always she's been playing it kind of like stone faced the whole time, and then all of a sudden she's like, Yeah, I like you too.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: She has nothing to do with this whole movie, and then funny she's got that one thing.
- 58:08SPEAKER_00: And Juno Temple is a is very funny as well.
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've seen um Ted Lasso, but she's just I haven't watched Ted Lasso.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've seen her in other films and I know she's a good actress, though.
- 58:18SPEAKER_00: She's so funny in Ted Lasso that it's just like, oh, what a waste for her here.
- 58:22SPEAKER_02: They just kind of didn't do much for women in this film in general.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: Because even Olivia Wilde and June Diane Raphael are very funny people as well.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's there's just nothing.
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: And June Diane Rayfield gets a couple of a couple of things that are funny, but like other than that.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: She gets to do a couple of quippy things as like the straight man in scenes, you know, like kind of correcting Jack Blackwell, I'm a slave, so I have to go do this.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it's very just like um that that detached irony type thing.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, she's very charismatic though.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: It's it's yeah, yeah.
- 58:57SPEAKER_02: They just they you know, they didn't really they didn't really give much for the ladies to do.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: So it's a very Avatar choice.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: Indeed.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: Um so basically they they have sex and then uh I don't know what happens here, I guess I've just got that I've just got it written down that Z let's in Anna roll, so I guess they kinda take over one of why.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: What happens is like basically the O and and and you and Ema or they come out and and he just is like, she's not virgin anymore.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: We did it.
- 59:43SPEAKER_02: It's you can't you can't sacrifice her or whatever, and then um uh and then they push the they push the baddie into the fire.
- 59:51SPEAKER_02: Uh because there's the fire pit thing, the sacrifice, sacrificial pit.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:57SPEAKER_02: And then they push the guy in there.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: Um and that's like and then yeah, and then Jack Black is somehow the one who tells people what to do, even though Olivia Wilde's character would, you would think, is the is the next higher up.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's um this is not a movie that lends itself to logic very well.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: High or not, like, and again, it's like I was high, I fully own up to that.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: I think that's how this was intended to be viewed, because if you can't, you you know, if you scrape at it a little, it falls apart.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: Like But basically, like they go, uh he decides to like pass over ruling to her.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: He's like, Inana is going to rule, she's gonna take over.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: Um, he's gonna go explore them with Maya around the world.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, and in the meantime, O becomes the leader of the village, of the original village, uh, and takes everyone around with him and like looks after them because he's the smartest man now.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: It turns out that's just like alright, they're I thought that was interesting that they're like they're going their separate ways or whatever at the end.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's kind of a little bit disappointing, isn't it?
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it just was it was a really anticlimactic ending.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Like they just kind of it just ends on a kind of like nothing note.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they just kind of like like yeah, they just sort of hug and oh miss you bro or whatever, and then uh Jack Black is doesn't know where he's going, and then so it's kind of you're you're seeing that there's kind of this joke about like, oh men are dumb and they need women to lead them, kind of thing at the end, with the fact that he's like, oh thank god you're here to a to the to his girlfriend at the end.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, that's that's about as much credence to like women's intelligence that you're gonna get is that the this implied sort of like, oh, you need a woman to guide around the dummy like behind him, you know, kind of thing.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: Um but I I still chose this movie, so um here we are.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: And then do you do you want to talk about the bloopers?
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: Because I I didn't write anything down about them and I don't have any memory of them.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_02: I all I remember is just that it's a bunch of them just like going up on their lines a bunch.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: And then and then the one with with Bill Hayter specifically is that he's like just doing a bunch of random and like he does a few random and voice impressions in a row while he's in that full garb.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: So it's very Bill Hader then.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: It's very Bill Hader, he's doing a bunch of random, like random voice impressions and then all of a sudden he's kind of like, This is this is bad, right?
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: Or so he says something, and I was like, oh, okay, so you know.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_02: Like um and yeah, it's just everybody's just they're they're cracking themselves up before even saying anything, as all the bloopers are, and it's just that As if does it make it look like it's a lot of improv then?
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: Um You know, it's weird because it's like it seems like it's scripts that they're going up on, like Olivia Wilde.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_02: I remember her blooper, because she has one, and she's like talking and she's like, and the and blah blah, I just forgot the line, and then like everyone's laughing like so hard at that off-screen, and I'm like, I feel like they're like in they're making this whole movie so that they can put together a blooper reel at the end.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_02: Oh no, because the reactions like of everybody laughing are so big.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's the thing is they're like, man, the blooper reel in this is gonna be fire.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be fire, you guys.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: Everything's hilarious.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: You guys are everything is hilarious what you guys are doing.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Um everyone on set, you have to laugh every time they do anything.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_00: Because it's going in the blooper.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what it is, because then no one actually did anything like you said, no one no no real gaffs happened.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: It's just people just being like, eh, you know, like those always seem like fake blooper rules when I see those.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: It feels yeah, it definitely has a manufactured feel to it, and I think that's part of why they spend so much time on like Bill Hader, because he's actually doing a bit, you know, he's actually doing a thing, uh, and then the rest of them are just kind of like you know.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_02: Um but you you can't deny, like, these these people are friends.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: These people are friends with each other, they they like each other's company.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: Um they they wanted to hang out in the sun together, you know, and that's you can only take that so far.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: You know, they they took it a hundred minutes, is what they did.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_02: They took it, they took it a hundred whole minutes.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: So that's that's that's that, man.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_02: And you know what I saw is that it it it it broke its butt, or like it, it it it it matched its budget.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: It made that.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're gonna say it broke just about broke its budget.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: It broke even.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: It broke even just it did it's done better than other flops, financially speaking.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: Having said that, that's the butt that's the gross for the bud on the budget of the film.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: That's not the gross on that I'm sure they lost money eventually because of the marketing as well.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: Well, we're not going that deep with it.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: Come on, man.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: Usually you've got to double your budget to make I have like no I have no like positive things to say that can stand on their own in this movie.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_01: I think well, I mean, come on, what could that marketing have cost?
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: 2.4 million?
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_01: Let's let's say that let me have this.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: Let's say that's that made a point.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: Let me have this one thing.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: I have such regrets.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: Um one interesting thing is it was filmed a year and a half before it came out as well.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: It said if it was filmed in January 2008 and it didn't come out until uh when did it say?
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: July 2009.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_02: You know what it is is they were just laughing too much in the editing room because there was it was just so funny.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_02: They just couldn't they couldn't decide where to kill their darlings because there was just so much.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_02: That's why there's a hundred it was supposed to only be 70 minutes and they just there's too much good stuff.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: Um we're just not in on the jokes.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_02: We're not in on all of the jokes.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: So and apparently the extended version, which is the uncut version, runs two and a half minutes longer.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_00: And features harsher language.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: That's it?
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: Well, at least it's it's at least n Netflix isn't like totally like bogarding like everything in.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_02: Cut two and a half minutes.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they just cut two and a half minutes out to just the tip.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally just the tip.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_02: Uh oh, that's so funny.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_00: Um we really have to fill this out.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: That's um that's a movie.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: That's a movie.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_02: It's a movie that ha that, you know, has a plot and characters.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_00: What do you enjoy about it?
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so what made you want to pick it other than it's just like you watched it recently and you like it.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, and you know, it's like it did like make me laugh.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_02: And I think what we what we talked about at the beginning kind of addresses that in that I I f I like that there are movies that are just really low, low stakes, decom just decompression.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: I think I think it's it's we put a lot of um it's it's really easy to condemn a movie, especially a comedy movie.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_02: We can hold them to such high standards sometimes.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_02: And I think that can be to the detriment of just having fun, you know.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm not saying that this was I mean, I know you didn't have fun watching this.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_02: Uh I didn't have the.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: It had fun moments.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: It had fun moments, though, you know, but like, I mean, it's like, I mean, with with sober eyes and ears, I'm aware of this film's uh gratuitous flaws.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_02: But I still I still appreciate uh I still appreciate bad movies for the sake of bad movies, having the right to exist, I think.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_02: And I think they help us contextualize what is good.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_02: I think they help us contextualize what makes great comedy great comedy.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Um and that's part of why I appreciate movies like Year One.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_02: I think I think I think we have to sometimes we have to recalibrate the bar.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_02: Like you know, some and I think sometimes comedies, especially, you know, I like Jod Apateau.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_02: I think that there are definitely there was definitely a point where as his movies were coming out, they were starting to get a little, they started feeling a really pithy and a bit self-aggrandizing and very they needed to have this big statement, you know, like funny people was you know, you know, there's there's a lot of um, there can be a lot of moralizing that starts to happen, or a lot of um really trying to unpack the human condition under the guise of comedy.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_02: And it's refreshing to see just dumb shit for 90 minutes.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's refreshing to see that I think we, you know, like let's let's take the let's take the bumpers off the rails and we don't have to always make things into um you know a a magnum opus, so to speak.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: Not everything has to be perfect and so.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_02: I think and I think there's something about like just embracing the I I think this movie reveled in its and its stupidity in a way that you you you don't have to appreciate, but I certainly d do appreciate just its existence and uh what that represents.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_02: Even if it's not the most rewatchable, even if it's not really the most endurable, logical piece of work, yeah.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_02: Um you know, that's that's that's the moral of the tale for me as far as movies like year one go and why I am willing to go to bat for something as as you know just transparently bad as this is, you know.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: Um it's uh it's not a secret masterpiece in disguise, you know.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_02: It's not a movie, it's not a movie that was almost good, save for some fatal tonal flaws.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_02: Like um, and I think that is okay.
- 1:11:02unknown: Yeah.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: So that's great.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_00: Like I'm I'm glad.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_00: Like I'm I um I had moments that I enjoyed, and you know, I I can't say I had the most fun watching it, but there were fun there was there were fun times.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_02: I you know, same, same.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_02: I was also watching it very sober, so like no, but it's like you know, I I uh I gave you I g you know I gave you an assignment and and you stepped up to the plate, my dude.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_00: Thank you for giving me that assignment.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: Um to let's talk about the reverse of this then.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: Let's move on to the final segment, which is the reverse.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: Um do you have a movie that is well loved and reviewed by critics and well loved by fans that you think is a bad movie?
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_02: I would say going off of what we just kind of talked about, with there's there's comedies that I think overly try to drive home this p um this this message or this this wisdom or whatever.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_02: Um and my Breakfast Club.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_02: The Breakfast Club.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_02: I'm not a Breakfast Club fan.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: I'm not a fan of it.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_02: I get I get why people like it, and that's fine.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_02: Um it's that's a movie that is just it it the pithiness and melodrama of it is is beyond the pale for me.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_02: Even as a even literally as a preteen watching this movie, watching, watching a character say when you grow up your heart dies, and like, you know, just uh oh, and uh uh uh a popular girl and a rebel and a and a this and a that.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_02: We're all of these things and more, Mr.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_02: Principal, you know, or whatever, you know, and and um I think also too, like I just didn't I I certainly didn't have um uh a great coming of age experience my in my own, you know, teen and adolescent years.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_02: And uh I'm always rather critical of films that um romanticize it.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that really romanticize that period or make it out to be this um you know the prime of your life type of deal.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_02: Like God help us God help us if that's really the time of of our lives, you know.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_02: Like I don't um uh it it's it's it's I get I get why people like it.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_00: I get why I get on the reverse of that, I get why people don't like it.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_00: I understand.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, there you go.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: I totally get it.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_00: I I loved it as a teen.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_00: I've I've fallen a little bit out of love with it as I'm growing older.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_00: Um now that I see a lot of the flaws in it.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_00: Um and I do agree with you about like the the five kind of like archetypes archetypal characters that they have in it, stereotypical characters they have in it that are like kind of not real and and just all they they all have one personality type and like they don't have their own things going on, it feels like.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I get that the movie is sort of like John Hughes's.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_02: It's it's a comedy, but it's also a statement about that teen experience.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_02: Like I I get that also at the time it was made, there weren't like a bevy of other teen films that had that that went on to sort of subvert these expectations in a creative way.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, someone had to kind of create the someone had to do the litmus, you know, for that or whatever.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_02: Um but it's still, you know, I mean, I would still much I like I I love Pretty and Pink and I love um, you know, the the uh I I love a lot of other 80s like teen films and 90s teen films and uh because I don't enjoy Pretty and Pink.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_02: You don't enjoy Pretty and Pink?
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_02: That's interesting.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_00: I don't enjoy a lot of the older John Hughes movies.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: But I do like the breakfast quite interesting, like weirdly.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think um I think something about Pretty and Pink in particular as far as it having a bit more it's a bit more of a focused like character study.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_02: Like kids in a public school.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_02: Like I I liked more of the ideas going on.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_02: It's not a movie that I like I'm I'm you know, like obsessed with or anything.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_02: I think I think I appreciate I think there's a lot of overlap in what The Breakfast Club and Pretty and Pink are trying to say, and I think Pretty and Pink does does a better, more nuanced job at saying what The Breakfast Club wants to do.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_02: I think I think Breakfast Club is very heavy-handed.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I can see.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is it's very on the nose and like Pretty and Pink's not that much better about it, but it is, but I do think it is better about it, is how I feel.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, and I like that she doesn't get with Jackie.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_02: I like that she goes for the other.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_02: I like that I think you know, seeing that subversion of what you would have expected to happen where it's like like like attracts like, and it's like, no, I think it's you know, it's I mean the breakfast cuff kind of does that as well though, at the end.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's it's it's worse.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_02: No, no, it's just this girl, like this girl literally put dandruff in her sandwich and now she's going out with the jock at the end of the day.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_02: Like what?
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: Like that, like I don't I cannot see past the dandruff sandrit sandwich and now she just got a makeover and she's normal.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: Like Yeah, I don't like that.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't Okay, girl.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_02: Like Yeah, you know.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_02: I think she's still gonna go home and eat a dandruff sandwich.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_02: Then she's gonna go meet up with her jog boyfriend, and he's we're gonna have dander kisses together.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_02: Sorry, it's just like I can't get past them about it.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_00: No, I I've never really thought about that.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_00: Now it's like in what now I've gonna think about that forever.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_02: This is the thing, it's like we we aggrandize these films for all their beautiful moments or whatever, but they're still like stupid crap that's like just as that's just as much as about like like year one, circum circumcision and stuff, girl eating a dander sandwich.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_02: Like we we with more similarities than differences going on sometimes that we tend to overlook if we if we if if we identify with the piece like on some personal level, we can overlook some of the lesser qualities of shit.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_02: But anyway, that's that's my hot take on Breakfast Club.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was great.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_00: Um my final my final thing I have to say is this fill year one was a dandruff sandwich.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_00: Um it wasn't it wasn't that bad.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, okay.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, this has been really fun.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_00: Uh thank you so much for doing it.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: How can we find you online?
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_00: And do you have anything you'd like to promote at the moment?

- 1:18:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thanks.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's we're on hiatus, we've been on hiatus because of yeah COVID times.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_02: Uh but when that returns, you know, uh and you're in the LA area, uh, you can check me out then, or um, yeah, just follow me online, because that's where all my stuff is anyway.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_02: So awesome.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much for doing this, Chelsea.
