Transcript
- 1:15Michael Mackniak: Welcome to the midweek unpack for holding it together kinda.
- 1:19Michael Mackniak: I'm Michael Makniak.
- 1:23Michael Mackniak: In our full week episodes, I'm bringing on experts and advocates and frontline workers to break down a lot of the heavy stuff, you know, legal mazes, medical systems, messy realities of caregiving, the just the common everyday mess that we find ourselves in.
- 1:43Michael Mackniak: In these short midweek sessions, it's just going to be you and I.
- 1:47Michael Mackniak: I want to take a step back to where it all started, give you guys foundational topics on the about you know, first onset of mental illness of the family, first troublesome crises, that kind of thing.
- 2:02Michael Mackniak: The very first episode that we did, I was calling first episode, but I was talked out of it.
- 2:10Michael Mackniak: And it's called Six Hospitals, Two States, Nine Months.
- 2:13Michael Mackniak: It's it's a look at Melissa of Melissa's project, which is the namesake of our main project in my nonprofit.
- 2:22Michael Mackniak: And the she is the subject of the book that I wrote called Saving Melissa, seven C's to cure the mental health system.
- 2:31Michael Mackniak: We want to, in this, in this episode, we wanted to look at what happens when a family's thrown into the complete chaos, navigating nine months of crisis and hot, you know, all these different hospitalizations, six hospitalizations in nine months, and there wasn't a single thread of continuity.
- 2:50Michael Mackniak: So if you've been here since day one, you remember that raw energy.
- 2:55Michael Mackniak: And if you're new, this early of this first episode set the foundation for everything that I wanted to do in this in this genre thereafter.
- 3:08Michael Mackniak: It's very, I don't know if it's easy to listen to a 45-minute podcast, but you guys have been doing it.
- 3:16Michael Mackniak: And it's easy to do it while you're commuting or doing other chores around the house, etc.
- 3:21Michael Mackniak: But sometimes processing the material and applying it to your life is where the real shift happens.
- 3:26Michael Mackniak: So when we aired this first episode, we didn't have a companion pamphlet to go with it.
- 3:33Michael Mackniak: We went back and built one for six hospitals, two states, nine months, and now it's available for this and every episode.
- 3:45Michael Mackniak: I want to be very clear, this is a companion sheet.
- 3:49Michael Mackniak: It's not homework.
- 3:51Michael Mackniak: This is not another another thing for you to do.
- 3:54Michael Mackniak: It's not another thing to pile onto you.
- 3:56Michael Mackniak: It's it's just it's just there for you.
- 3:59Michael Mackniak: It's a short printable guide to give you quiet space, to drop that professional armor, pause, examine what's exact exactly going on, what's happening beneath the noise that you deal with every single day.
- 4:18Michael Mackniak: So to show you how this works, I want to look directly at the central premise of the Six Hospitals Companion Guide.
- 4:25Michael Mackniak: Right on the cover, we lay down a core truth.
- 4:28Michael Mackniak: A series of short admissions can produce movement without continuity.
- 4:33Michael Mackniak: I know that you guys have all experienced that.
- 4:36Michael Mackniak: Families may, you know, very often repeat the same history while each team sees only one snapshot.
- 4:42Michael Mackniak: That is the real premise of this particular episode.
- 4:46Michael Mackniak: Going on to page two, this guide is going to force you to build an airtight timeline before you react.
- 4:52Michael Mackniak: It asks you to list exact dates, observable changes, safety events.
- 4:58Michael Mackniak: It's turning nine months of chaos into one readable arc for yourself and for the providers in the community.
- 5:06Michael Mackniak: We come to page four.
- 5:08Michael Mackniak: It's our snapshot versus the arc.
- 5:11Michael Mackniak: It breaks down how a single evaluation room or one calm hour in an ER can completely miss a person's baseline.
- 5:20Michael Mackniak: It can completely miss deterioration patterns and what repeatedly happens in your family after a discharge.
- 5:28Michael Mackniak: There's a core principle that really I hope hits you right between the eyes.
- 5:34Michael Mackniak: It says, one calm hour should not erase a year of crisis data.
- 5:42Michael Mackniak: So as I sat down this week with by myself and looked at that concept, I thought about how often families feel completely invalidated by their doctors, evaluators, who act like judges who are or are presiding over a crisis based on sort of a 15-minute interaction.
- 6:02Michael Mackniak: When a system or a family is rushing to clear beds, to clear bad ideas, a clear bad mojo, it's easy for for us all to mistake these snapshots for real stability.
- 6:17Michael Mackniak: There often lies in the the weeds there, your need to pick up the pieces when these plans or these interactions, if you will, fail.
- 6:37Michael Mackniak: So this kind of review, this is why we built these companion pamphlets.
- 6:42Michael Mackniak: We want to give you a framework to separate facts from assumptions, build a continuity packet that crosses every door, and and really tests a discharge plan before the hospital door closes behind you.
- 6:55Michael Mackniak: It even gives you a simple next seven days checklist.
- 7:00Michael Mackniak: You don't have to organize every record or report, you know, repair every failed handoff for this week.
- 7:07Michael Mackniak: Just number one, start with list major admissions, discharges, safety events.
- 7:13Michael Mackniak: Write, write a quick description of the person before the current decline.
- 7:20Michael Mackniak: What is your loved one like when they're not in a state of crisis or decompensation?
- 7:27Michael Mackniak: So whether you listen to Six Hospitals two states nine months back when it aired in April of 2026, or if you're just finding us today, go back, give that episode a listen, and then grab this free listener guide, this companion guide.
- 7:41Michael Mackniak: You can get it right now for free.
- 7:43Michael Mackniak: It uh there's a link in the description to this podcast, and it will be available as soon as this is broadcast.
- 7:52Michael Mackniak: So print it out, open it on your phone, use it, you know, and and get get yourself some traction, you know, before you before the next door opens or closes.
- 8:03Michael Mackniak: So until next time, I really hope you're just all keeping it together, even if it's just kinda.
