- 0:06Let us fly backward in fancy.
- 0:08The place, the lobby of the Edgewater Beach Hotel.
- 0:11The time, shortly after the first game of the season.
- 0:13You remember Warren, I was huddled over a radiator,
- 0:15reading your account of the ball game
- 0:17when you stepped up to me and said,
- 0:19Frank, can I see you a minute?
- 0:20Well, Warren Brown,
- 0:22what are you huddling over the steam for?
- 0:24Boy, I'm cold.
- 0:25It was freezing at that ballpark.
- 0:26Wanna pull up a radiator and join me?
- 0:28No, not me, I'm hot.
- 0:31That show off Greenberg would have to hit a double
- 0:33with two men on base.
- 0:34Oh, he really took a hold of that one, didn't he?
- 0:36The wind hadn't been blowing so hard,
- 0:38that ball still be going.
- 0:41Well, he sure caused me a lot of extra work.
- 0:43What do you mean?
- 0:43Well, I had my story written the night before
- 0:45that the Cubs had won.
- 0:51Warren, you're so imprudent, you should check with me.
- 0:54Every time that Greenberg comes to Wrigley Field,
- 0:56he upsets everything.
- 0:58He did it in the World Series in 1945, he always does.
- 1:01He haunts the Cubs.
- 1:02Well, I hope it's nothing temporary.
- 1:04It really looks though like Wrigley Field
- 1:07is lucky for Greenberg, doesn't it?
- 1:08Well, Bing, if you get rained out 153 more games,
- 1:11your Pittsburgh team will probably win the pennant.
- 1:15I just want you to know, Warren,
- 1:16that I bear you no antipathy for your biased attitude.
- 1:19And you know what I did for you?
- 1:20I went out and bought a copy of your book,
- 1:22The Chicago Cubs.
- 1:23I bought it out at the ball game yesterday.
- 1:24Did you read it?
- 1:25Well, when I got to page three,
- 1:26then I made a bond file of it to keep from freezing to death.
- 1:30I noticed that smoke.
- 1:31I thought it was Bob Hope sending up signals
- 1:34to the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:35Ha.
- 1:36Ha.
- 1:36Ha.
- 1:37Ha.
- 1:38Ha.
- 1:39Ha.
- 1:40By the way, Bing, do you know that all the time
- 1:42Cleveland was training out in California,
- 1:44Hope didn't go out to see the Indians play one game?
- 1:46Well, Warren, Bob didn't know that he'd bought a ball team.
- 1:48He thought he purchased the blanket concession at Albuquerque.
- 1:51Besides, he's afraid to go out to a ball park.
- 1:53He was hit with a baseball when he was a child.
- 1:55His Indian name is Chief Lump on the head.
- 1:58Oh, that explains everything.
- 1:59You are so right, Warren.
- 2:01So right.
- 2:02I'm glad you see it our way.
- 2:03Yeah.
- 2:04Well, let's get back to you.
- 2:05How did you ever happen to sell Greenberg
- 2:07the idea of going to work for the Pirates?
- 2:09Why, it had nothing to do with that.
- 2:10No?
- 2:11Well, let me ask you this.
- 2:12Is it true that after every ball game,
- 2:13you have to run up to his room and give him a rub down?
- 2:16Oh, that's so much fiddle faddle, Warren.
- 2:18I know.
- 2:19I know.
- 2:20I never did fiddle faddle, Warren.
- 2:21I never did.
- 2:22This is merely a vicious rumor
- 2:23started by old Chief Lump on the head.
- 2:24Oh.
- 2:25Is that so?
- 2:27Well, it's a fact, isn't it,
- 2:28that you personally knit all of Greenberg's sweatshirts?
- 2:31Oh, this is the grossest libel I've ever run into.
- 2:35You may lay that report too to old Bulge on the Bean.
- 2:38I'm not so sure.
- 2:40Isn't that Greenberg coming across the lobby now?
- 2:42Well, it's either Greenberg or the Palmolive building.
- 2:44Hey, Hank.
- 2:45Hank.
- 2:46Oh, hello, Warren.
- 2:48Hello, Vice-President.
- 2:49How are you doing?
- 3:02Well, Hank you sure played a great game today.
- 3:04Oh, I did nothing, Bing.
- 3:06Yeah, we got to nothing.
- 3:08What does he churches are always doing
- 3:09how much would you state take to stay away from Chicago.
- 3:13Stay away from Chicago?
- 3:14I love Chicago.
- 3:15So do I.
- 3:16That's why I want you to stay away from him,
- 3:18You know, Hank, Warren is really a ardent cub-rooter.
- 3:23Well the cubs are a great team.
- 3:25You know, Warren, every time I step up to the bat here, I say to myself, wouldn't it
- 3:29be wonderful if I can do it again?
- 3:32You sure did it today, Hank.
- 3:33Well, it was nice to see you, Warren.
- 3:36Come on, Vice-President, let's get upstairs.
- 3:38I'm really stiff from the cold weather.
- 3:40I need a good rubdown tonight.
- 3:45Rubdown?
- 3:46Just a minute, Crosby.
- 3:47I just had a few bottles of liniment left over after I sold the horses, you know what
- 3:54I mean?
- 3:57Say, you better not mention horses in front of a ball player.
- 4:01Happy Chandler might be listening.
- 4:03Horses?
- 4:04What are they?
- 4:06The ball players, Hank.
- 4:07Horses are four-legged animals that pull milk wagons.
- 4:09Especially yours.
- 4:10Well, Hank, shall we get going upstairs?
- 4:14I've got to keep you in shape.
- 4:16By the way, Bing, I meant to tell you, I have plenty of sweatshirts.
- 4:20I wonder if you'll start knitting socks now.
- 4:23Anything you say, Hank.
- 4:24What's your foot size?
- 4:25Eighty-five and a half.
- 4:28What Greenberg won't do to keep a good ball player?
- 4:32Why don't the Cubs have a Vice-President who can sing, knit, and massage?
- 4:37Would you fellas mind getting away from that radiator?
- 4:39I'm expecting guests for dinner and I've got to steam a sack of clams.
- 4:44Well, well, well, you're Groucho Marx or I'm greatly mistaken.
- 4:52Glad to know you greatly.
- 4:55How's Mrs. Mistaken and all the little mistakes?
- 4:59Groucho, this is Warren Brown and Hank Greenberg.
- 5:07Which is Greenberg and which is Brown?
- 5:08I'm colorblind.
- 5:09You know Warren Brown, he's a newspaper man.
- 5:13Well, tell him to leave one of my house every morning.
- 5:15No, no, he's not that kind of a newspaper man.
- 5:18Warren sees the Cubs play every day.
- 5:20Well, I guess a man will do anything to make money.
- 5:22Go ahead.
- 5:23Greenberg, I want to see you about signing up with my ball team.
- 5:29Now wait, just a minute Groucho, just a minute here now.
- 5:32Wait a minute.
- 5:33Don't worry, Crosby, he's never been able to out-knit you.
- 5:35Have you got a ball team, Groucho?
- 5:38I had a ball team when you were just a babe in Ruth's arms.
- 5:43I was a big man in baseball when Happy Chandler was known as Sad Sack.
- 5:48Groucho, your team has got to be nothing.
- 5:50Listen, Crosby, the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't even get in the same shower with my team.
- 5:54Oh, I don't know about that.
- 5:57Well, I do.
- 5:58I've got a girl's team.
- 6:02Well, not only that, but I'm one of the scrub players.
- 6:09Well, that changes the whole picture.
- 6:14I'm owner, manager, and trainer of Marx's Bloomer Girls, better known as the Nylon Socks.
- 6:21Why Nylon Socks?
- 6:22Well, you get more runs that way.
- 6:27What a team I've got, a cave on every bag.
- 6:30You sign a new picture?
- 6:42I just signed a picture.
- 6:43I just signed a picture who's a sensation.
- 6:45Is she fast?
- 6:46I think so.
- 6:47She gets in around three o'clock every morning.
- 6:48Well, I want to tell you something, Groucho.
- 6:51You can't have Greenberg.
- 6:52He signed with the Pirates this year.
- 6:54Well, he can play for both of us.
- 6:55My girls only play night games.
- 6:57I'll bet your girls look good in night games.
- 7:03Actually, they don't wear night games.
- 7:05They wear pajamas.
- 7:06Well, Groucho, thanks for your offer, but I don't think I could play with your team.
- 7:11Why don't you try to get Hildegard?
- 7:13She's on second.
- 7:14You better run along, Groucho.
- 7:17Hank plays every afternoon baseball for Pittsburgh.
- 7:19Your girls play at night.
- 7:20Look, an afternoon game at Pittsburgh is like a night game anyplace else.
- 7:24All right, Hank, come on, sign this contract and so you'll feel at home is a ballpen.
- 7:30Well, that's very flattering, Groucho.
- 7:32But wouldn't I look silly playing with a team of bloomer girls?
- 7:35My team plays in Snuggies.
- 7:39One season with my team and you'll be known as the Eddie Canner of baseball.
- 7:42Of course, playing on a girls team, you can't call yourself Hank Greenberg.
- 7:46We'll have to change that.
- 7:47What did you call me?
- 7:48Bob Feller.
- 7:49No, that's no good.
- 7:52You couldn't have a fellow on a girls team.
- 7:55Hank, I'm going out to the ballpark tomorrow and watch you some more.
- 7:58Have you got a box seat?
- 7:59No, that's just the way my pants hang.
- 8:03Say, Groucho, I suppose a lot of your girls got married last year.
- 8:09So many of them got married, we ought to have spring training at Niagara Falls.
- 8:13Next season, I'm going to let them train in Reno.
- 8:17That's a separation center.
- 8:18Well, it's a Broughton Barney one.
- 8:23It's none of my business, Bing, but I think a girls team would be too slow for Hank.
- 8:27Yeah, he's got to have action.
- 8:28Action, why in one game, I heavy hitter slapped the ball in the center field.
- 8:32He ran it first, slid it in the second, slid back the first, made it the second again,
- 8:35then slid back the first and back the second.
- 8:36What was the idea?
- 8:37Her guidle was caught on first.
- 8:38Well, Groucho, I'm afraid I hate to tell you this, but your mission here tonight is
- 8:48futile.
- 8:49We've got Hank tied up for a year.
- 8:51Tied up for a year?
- 8:52He won't be able to brush his teeth.
- 8:54Anyhow, I have in my pocket a copy of a song I want you to sing.
- 8:59Something clever?
- 9:00Yeah, it could be.
- 9:01I didn't write it.
- 9:02It was written by Bill Coram and Harold Smith, and if this song goes over, I'll make a fortune.
- 9:06Well, your name isn't on the tune.
- 9:07How are you going to make a fortune?
- 9:09I've got to take it on the Irish sweepstakes.
- 9:10Oh, I'm sorry.
- 9:11Anyhow, Bing, this is a song about Greenberg, and if you don't mind, I'll teach it to you
- 9:15and vice versa.
- 9:16Okay, let's break into song.
- 9:18Why not get the key from John Scott Trotter, and we won't have to break it in.
- 9:21You're so smart.
- 9:22We've heard about those old time dangerous pirates of Captain Kidd and Silver John the
- 9:32Long.
- 9:34But we prefer those modern dangerous pirates.
- 9:38As our victims walk the plank, we sing this song.
- 9:43Oh, goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 9:47You are going to see an awful lot of sky.
- 9:51Don't hang around for Richard to open up that door.
- 9:55When Hankus Pankus hits you where you've never been hit before.
- 9:58Oh, goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 10:02You had better kiss your relatives goodbye.
- 10:06When Hank comes to the plate, ball, you're going to be out late.
- 10:09So goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 10:12Goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 10:16Say hello there to the sun up in the sky.
- 10:19A plate is mighty handy to eat the lean and fat.
- 10:24But not when Hank the Greenberg serves it up with his big bat.
- 10:27Oh, goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 10:30Go fly till the blue has met the dawn up there so high.
- 10:34When Hank gets home run itch, ball, you're going to drop a stitch.
- 10:38So goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 10:41And that could be finer than a partner like Ralkon are in the outfield.
- 10:51And I am confirming that I'll work for Billy Herman in the infield.
- 10:57Oh, goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye.
- 11:01You had better kiss your relatives goodbye.
- 11:05Wait a minute.
- 11:06When the count is two and oh and I let that third one go, what happens then?
- 11:09You're out.
- 11:10Oh, goodbye, Mr. Hank, goodbye.
- 11:14And furthermore, when I think I've got a hit and it winds up in Slaughter's Mitt, how about
- 11:19that?
- 11:20Too bad.
- 11:21Oh, goodbye, Mr. Hank, goodbye.
- 11:22Oh, Mr. Greenberg, goodbye.
- 11:23Mr. Hank, goodbye.
- 11:24There we go.
- 11:25That's it.
- 11:42Anybody hurt?
- 11:43Bing, I think you ought to play ball for Pittsburgh and let Greenberg do the singing.
- 11:46I think we'll arrange that first thing in the morning.
- 11:48I think Bill Corham did pretty good with that.
- 11:50He picks songs like he picks horses.
- 11:52I don't know if that's a compliment or not, Warren.
- 11:54But I think goodbye, Mr. Ball, is destined to be a big hit, at least in Pittsburgh.
- 11:58Okay, Bing, but no matter how far Hank socks Mr. Ball, you can always catch the play with
- 12:03a Philco radio.
- 12:05Oh, you would bring me.
- 12:07Remember any Philco you buy this year has got to be tops.
- 12:10It's brand new from the circuit clear through to the cabinet.
- 12:13Not just a face lifting job, but scores of vital improvements in power and performance.
- 12:18Yes, even the smallest 1947 Philco table model is designed and built with all the resources
- 12:24of the world's largest radio manufacturers.
- 12:26And you can hear the difference, the miniature dialing.
- 12:29Always thinking ahead, Philco gives you tomorrow in your radio set today.
- 12:34So when you buy your new radio or radio phonograph now, look at the leader.
- 12:38Look at a Philco.
- 12:40Famous for quality, the world over.
- 12:42Well, it appears to be about time to batten down the hatches for this session.
- 12:50But before shoving off, I want to say that we enjoyed our visit out here at Great Lakes.
- 12:54Meet all you wonderful fellows.
- 12:55You've been a wonderful audience.
- 12:57I want to thank George Barnes, Warren Brown, Hank Greenberg and Groucho Marx for coming
- 13:01to bat for us tonight.
- 13:02Good luck, fellows.
- 13:03And good night, folks.
