- 0:00Speaker 1: It's the UConn Football Coaches Show. We get together every
- 0:03Speaker 1: week with Jason Candle. I'm Mike Crispino.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Huskies off a.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Big win to start their campaign against Lafayette 56-7. And Coach,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the big thing that came out of it, among others,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm sure you're going to have lots of things to
- 0:15Speaker 1: talk about, but you got a lot of people involved.
- 0:18Speaker 1: 13 receivers, five running backs, two quarterbacks, and a bunch
- 0:22Speaker 1: of people that, you know, got some reps on Saturday.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's a good script if you can
- 0:28Speaker 2: plan it out that way.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think it's– and it wasn't easy–
- 0:33Speaker 3: not an easy for the old guys making the great
- 0:35Speaker 3: sheets prior to the– after the game, right? I mean,
- 0:38Speaker 3: just keep adding names because there's so many guys that
- 0:39Speaker 3: got involved, so many guys played.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But, yeah, valuable.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Experience for young players. You know, it's a give and take.
- 0:46Speaker 3: You wish you had more time with your top units
- 0:48Speaker 3: to get more game-like reps. But– Also a very good thing,
- 0:53Speaker 3: as you mentioned, to get those young players involved. So,
- 0:55Speaker 3: you know, it keeps the morale of some of those
- 0:57Speaker 3: guys that are down the line a little bit. You know,
- 0:59Speaker 3: it keeps them engaged and keeps them going. And, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: if you want to have a great program, you've got
- 1:04Speaker 3: to continue to develop and you've got to continue to
- 1:06Speaker 3: put those guys in position to be successful that way, too.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So, yeah, a lot of positives to come out of that.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Caleb Osborne, your QB, wears number seven. He's a junior,
- 1:15Speaker 1: played some for you last year at Toledo. I'm just
- 1:19Speaker 1: remembering some of the things you talked about when you're
- 1:21Speaker 1: deciding about your quarterback. You want a guy making great decisions, accurate,
- 1:25Speaker 1: good footwork, extends some plays, social leadership skills, arm strength,
- 1:30Speaker 1: pocket presence. How do you think he rated in that
- 1:32Speaker 1: first game?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Well, it was very efficient.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I think it was really good pre-snap, which I think
- 1:40Speaker 3: slows things down once you get the ball in your hands.
- 1:43Speaker 3: There's going to be some moments where some things break
- 1:45Speaker 3: down throughout the course of a football game and didn't
- 1:47Speaker 3: quite go the way it should look and maybe what
- 1:50Speaker 3: you scripted it out to be. And his ability to
- 1:53Speaker 3: improvise and to get the ball tucked down and go
- 1:56Speaker 3: make plays with his legs, you can't coach that. So
- 2:01Speaker 3: it was valuable to allow him to be able to
- 2:03Speaker 3: get into some of those. He actually got hit. No
- 2:05Speaker 3: more of this wear a red jersey, nobody touches me.
- 2:09Speaker 3: You get into the flow of the football game and
- 2:11Speaker 3: you actually feel like a football player And I think
- 2:14Speaker 3: in his case, I think that's where he's he's at
- 2:16Speaker 3: his best. So I saw some high level things from
- 2:20Speaker 3: him Saturday. And, you know, we've got to figure out
- 2:22Speaker 3: how to take some of the mistakes that were on
- 2:24Speaker 3: the tape off and bottle up the good if we can.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, he's Caleb went 19 to 26, a couple of touchdowns.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But as you say, he he tucked it and he
- 2:34Speaker 1: ran for 92 yards. How would you describe to our
- 2:39Speaker 1: listeners who maybe didn't watch the game or weren't there,
- 2:42Speaker 1: his ability to be elusive? He's kind of a, he's
- 2:46Speaker 1: not a, I don't know how to describe it. Not
- 2:48Speaker 1: spectacular athletically, but he's really shifty, I thought.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, well, first thing, if you weren't there, you better
- 2:54Speaker 3: get there this weekend. But I think his style is, you.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Kind of described it, right?
- 3:04Speaker 3: I mean, his ability just to, you know, feel through
- 3:08Speaker 3: the course of the game, right?
- 3:09Speaker 2: I mean, you're not in a panic. You're not rushed.
- 3:13Speaker 3: You're not hypersensitive to the first thing that doesn't go
- 3:16Speaker 3: your way. And you can certainly just, you know, you
- 3:20Speaker 3: can kind of be the calm and the chaos, right? And,
- 3:23Speaker 3: you know, the really good athletes and really good players,
- 3:25Speaker 3: they tend to have that innate ability.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And this kid's no different.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about Kenji Christian and Sincere Bowers before
- 3:33Speaker 1: the game, the season started. Obviously, they had good starts
- 3:36Speaker 1: to their season, but Trey Cornish, senior guy, wears number six,
- 3:41Speaker 1: six carries, a bunch of yards, 76, 5'11, 225, comes
- 3:46Speaker 1: out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Again, the depth in that running
- 3:51Speaker 1: back room, I think it could be significant as this
- 3:54Speaker 1: season progresses.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Well, you're going to need them. There are bumps, there
- 3:58Speaker 2: are bruises.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Those guys get hit and they take a beating, but
- 4:02Speaker 3: another one of those weird situations from that game right
- 4:04Speaker 3: you'd love to see the stat sheet where kenji had
- 4:06Speaker 3: 15 carries and see what he could really do with
- 4:08Speaker 3: that and you know then it gets a point in
- 4:11Speaker 3: the game where you look out there and it's a
- 4:13Speaker 3: one-sided game and you know you're you're saying to the
- 4:16Speaker 3: assistant coaches get him off the field right i mean
- 4:19Speaker 3: yeah you're the dumbest guy in the world if you
- 4:21Speaker 3: get that guy hurt in the 34 35 point lead
- 4:23Speaker 3: so you know uh another one of those give and
- 4:27Speaker 3: take scenarios where you get a lot of guys involved,
- 4:29Speaker 3: but you know, you wish you would have, you had
- 4:31Speaker 3: more time and a little bit more with that first
- 4:34Speaker 3: unit with him and, you know, trying to figure out
- 4:35Speaker 3: the rhythm with that offensive line. But in Trey's case specifically,
- 4:38Speaker 3: you know, he, he had a great game. He had
- 4:40Speaker 3: one really big time individual effort on the one long
- 4:43Speaker 3: run he had. And, but a kid that brings a
- 4:46Speaker 3: great competitive spirit to the practice field each and every day.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I mean, there's a guy that's the same guy every day,
- 4:50Speaker 3: whether he's running the ball, he's protecting the passer or
- 4:53Speaker 3: asking him to go out there and catch passes.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And, that's infectious with your teammates.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So I'm really glad we have him here and, you know,
- 4:59Speaker 3: continue to grow off of what he's capable of doing. And,
- 5:02Speaker 3: you know, he's a guy that maybe his role does increase.
- 5:05Speaker 1: With Jason Candle on the UConn football coach, that's been
- 5:10Speaker 1: not surprising, but it's been satisfying for me to watch
- 5:14Speaker 1: and listen to some of the guys and what they're
- 5:15Speaker 1: talking about in developing chemistry and communication. We're going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: talk to John List a little bit later and and
- 5:22Speaker 1: Ty Chan and the offensive line and where, where communication
- 5:25Speaker 1: is so important, developing that quickly for a football team,
- 5:29Speaker 1: that's gotta be one of your things that you're looking
- 5:32Speaker 1: to do. I would think.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I don't think in today's day and age, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 3: you put together a team in January and really this
- 5:39Speaker 3: has become a, you know, whether you like it or not,
- 5:42Speaker 3: it's become a one year thing as you build a
- 5:44Speaker 3: roster and you know, you, you know that there are
- 5:49Speaker 3: storms that are coming at you and it's not just
- 5:52Speaker 3: smooth sailing. So how do you prepare for those storms?
- 5:55Speaker 3: How do you, you know, how do you lead a
- 5:57Speaker 3: group of men into adversity and expect them to come
- 6:01Speaker 3: out of that with really, you.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Know, good results.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And then, you know, after the fact, really learn from
- 6:07Speaker 3: those adverse moments. You have to prepare them and you
- 6:10Speaker 3: have to you know, you have to learn about one another,
- 6:12Speaker 3: you have to communicate, you have to be connected, you
- 6:14Speaker 3: got to be able to be together and be on
- 6:15Speaker 3: the same page. And you have to have enough humility
- 6:17Speaker 3: about yourself to celebrate the success of others equally as
- 6:20Speaker 3: much as you celebrate the success of your own self. And,
- 6:24Speaker 3: you know, easier said than done for 17 year old
- 6:26Speaker 3: people sometime and 18 year old guys sometimes. So, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 3: to be able to get a group of guys in
- 6:31Speaker 3: a room and to really buy into one another and celebrate,
- 6:34Speaker 3: you know, like I said, other successes, I think that's a,
- 6:38Speaker 3: That's a really difficult thing to do, and it's more
- 6:42Speaker 3: of an art than it.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Is a science.
- 6:43Speaker 3: There's not a book you go to Barnes & Noble
- 6:45Speaker 3: and figure out in today's day and age how to
- 6:46Speaker 3: build a football team.
- 6:47Speaker 1: All right, you've got to look for leaders.
- 6:49Speaker 2: You've got some.
- 6:50Speaker 1: We'll talk about Kavion Sherman and some of the other
- 6:52Speaker 1: guys' special teams as well coming up. Jason Candle with us,
- 6:55Speaker 1: the UConn Football Coaches Show here on Learfield. Stay with us.
