- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, in the words of rock set our nineteen eighties
- 0:11Speaker 1: music reference, obviously, I'm going to get dressed for success,
- 0:14Speaker 1: shaping me up for the big time. Baby, get dressed
- 0:17Speaker 1: for success, shaping it up for your love. Well, what
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm seeing is if you are the Diamonds, you can
- 0:22Speaker 1: go and court in a sumo suit and you're still
- 0:24Speaker 1: going to play out of your mind. So I got
- 0:26Speaker 1: a lot to talk about this week. You're on No Dribble.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Strap in. Hello, and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast
- 0:44Speaker 1: where we talk about netball, we talk about so much more.
- 0:47Speaker 1: My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I'm Kath Cox, and I'm lozellas Hi.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Hello, yeay can now. I just want to quickly congratulate
- 0:55Speaker 3: Carolyn Swindle because we've had like half an hour forty
- 0:58Speaker 3: five minutes of technical issues and she did not lose
- 1:01Speaker 3: her shit and swear even one time I was waiting
- 1:05Speaker 3: for it.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I did, Wow, I did once.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Oh I think I missed it. Well done.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Maybe maybe you had headphones on that weren't working and
- 1:12Speaker 1: I set it through a microphone.
- 1:13Speaker 3: That was a level of restraint I've never seen before.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Shank you. You know, this is what the grown ups
- 1:18Speaker 1: do sometimes we are.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Well, do you know what I got to say? My
- 1:23Speaker 2: kids absolutely roasted me this week in front of my mother,
- 1:25Speaker 2: and they told my mum what a potty mouth I have.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And I hardly have a potty mouth at all. In
- 1:29Speaker 2: front of them, I think I'm so much worse away
- 1:32Speaker 2: from them.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but how did you reply to that?
- 1:35Speaker 2: I might have used it. No, I'm not gone to
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'm a grown up Catherine, and my mom might listening
- 1:42Speaker 2: with podcasts, and I'm nervous about what she would say.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I remember I said shit once on television and she
- 1:49Speaker 2: absolutely taught me a new one. But it wasn't anywhere
- 1:51Speaker 2: near as bad as a new one that my grandmother,
- 1:53Speaker 2: Bridey or bride before she died, tore me for swearing
- 1:56Speaker 2: on television. So I'm way too scared. So no, I
- 1:59Speaker 2: might have dropped their fire and finished it with off
- 2:01Speaker 2: and my mum NELLI walked out the room and the
- 2:04Speaker 2: kids are just fell over laughing because I'm like, you
- 2:07Speaker 2: can swear if it's funny, but I don't let teaching children.
- 2:13Speaker 1: There's something that I keep seeing on the Internet of
- 2:16Speaker 1: people like putting up people's funny crimes, so like a
- 2:19Speaker 1: woman got arrested for sending a mariachi band on her
- 2:24Speaker 1: ex's first date with someone new, and people were saying,
- 2:29Speaker 1: is it really a crime if it's inherently funny?
- 2:31Speaker 3: And that's exactly I tend to agree with that. Let
- 2:34Speaker 3: me tell you another one. So a mate of ours
- 2:37Speaker 3: who shall can I speak, a mate of ours who
- 2:40Speaker 3: shall remain nameless, that's hard to say, found out about
- 2:45Speaker 3: somebody dating somebody else that shouldn't be dating that other person,
- 2:49Speaker 3: and also found out that they were taking a little
- 2:51Speaker 3: trip together. So she rang quantsil whoever it was, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: ordered them a kosher meal.
- 2:59Speaker 2: That's right, she got that, right, she had for some reason,
- 3:02Speaker 2: she had their frequent Flyer points and she knew them
- 3:05Speaker 2: well enough to guess the password, and so she got
- 3:07Speaker 2: in and didn't you change like flights home, and that's
- 3:10Speaker 2: changed everything.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I think might have separated them on the plane and
- 3:13Speaker 3: this is a long haul flight, but ordered them the
- 3:16Speaker 3: kosher meals as well as like, well played, I'm never
- 3:19Speaker 3: going to fuck with you. I love that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That's so good. Oh that's just too funny, I know.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And you know, like we're swearing, you know when your
- 3:29Speaker 2: kids swear, and you and they're little, and you'll and
- 3:31Speaker 2: you don't want to laugh because it's like, no, that's
- 3:33Speaker 2: not the proper way to speak, that's not how you speak.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Any eight where did they hear it? And then a
- 3:38Speaker 2: little part of you is proud because it's actually a
- 3:41Speaker 2: sign of intelligence if they swear in context, like you know,
- 3:44Speaker 2: when they're little, when they're really little. I'm like, that's it.
- 3:46Speaker 2: You said the fbom them right the right moment, and
- 3:48Speaker 2: it was funny. So four marks for you, but in
- 3:51Speaker 2: what's coming out your mouth is, oh, darling, that's not
- 3:53Speaker 2: how we speak.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So yeah. One of my fos on social media is
- 3:58Speaker 3: a man. So it's you know doorbell cams that seem
- 4:01Speaker 3: to catch absolutely I love them. So it's a father
- 4:04Speaker 3: coming home with his daughter and she must be two
- 4:07Speaker 3: or three at best, and they're opening the front door
- 4:10Speaker 3: about to go in, and she's like, fuck it's cold.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Oh it's just.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So great when it's so funny, I reckon, yeah, but
- 4:21Speaker 2: I think, Catherine, you did, I know you want to
- 4:23Speaker 2: get to this, so we might just go there now.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You did ask us what our worst habits were, and
- 4:27Speaker 2: probably having a potty mouth at different times is my
- 4:29Speaker 2: worst habit.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Right mine. I realized that that's so boring it is.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I'll bring them. I'm trying to get, you know, this
- 4:37Speaker 2: is my segree into Catherine's chap.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I think now the time is the time. But
- 4:42Speaker 1: I will say I did think about that. I swear
- 4:45Speaker 1: too much. That's my worst habit. But it's like, well
- 4:47Speaker 1: everyone knows that. Like that's so, I'm hoping you've brought
- 4:51Speaker 1: something else I have.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Oh no, mine is mine is just stupid and I
- 4:55Speaker 3: don't know why I continue to do it so clearly
- 4:58Speaker 3: it's become are you.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Going to say something laying here like, oh, my worst
- 5:02Speaker 1: habit is I'm just too generous to people, Or my
- 5:06Speaker 1: worst habit is I'm just too pretty? Like are you
- 5:08Speaker 1: going to be saying something perfection?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Having it always early and waiting for my friends and
- 5:16Speaker 2: so I ordered food before.
- 5:17Speaker 1: They get to much about other people.
- 5:20Speaker 3: That's your worst habits are being little beaches to me?
- 5:24Speaker 2: What I'm trying to get habits get each other off.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But we're taking the.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Piece out of job interview technique. What what are your weaknesses?
- 5:34Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:34Speaker 1: I just work too hard. I just worried too much
- 5:38Speaker 1: about doing an excellent job.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Have you met behind to say you wouldn't, would you
- 5:44Speaker 3: if somebody actually said, oh, I don't know.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You just you would go we can never work together because.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You're not fun fun exactly. If you're not funny, you're
- 5:53Speaker 2: not hired fair enough, true color. Why were you interested
- 5:58Speaker 2: in our in our worst habits or thinking about it?
- 6:01Speaker 3: Stupid stupid thing that has become a habit obviously because
- 6:04Speaker 3: I do it every day. I have a drinking problem.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And it's not the drinking you're thinking straight away, but
- 6:11Speaker 3: every morning I make myself a cup of tea. I
- 6:13Speaker 3: cannot fill it a little way from the top. I
- 6:18Speaker 3: feel it to the brim, to the point that I
- 6:21Speaker 3: have to bend over and slurp. Why I don't know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: And don't suggest to get a bigger cup, because I
- 6:28Speaker 3: have done that. The bigger the cup, the more I
- 6:31Speaker 3: will fill it up to the brim every single time.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So is this that you fill it with the hot
- 6:37Speaker 1: water and then you go, oh, I haven't left enough
- 6:39Speaker 1: frame for the milk, and then or no, I.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Will fill it like this far with the hot water
- 6:44Speaker 3: from the top, and then I'll try and get the
- 6:46Speaker 3: milk in it without it spilling over the top. But
- 6:48Speaker 3: I kid you not, I reckon. There's one time out
- 6:51Speaker 3: of the last four months that I haven't had to
- 6:54Speaker 3: bend over and slurp the top of it before I
- 6:56Speaker 3: can even pick it up. Why do I do that?
- 6:59Speaker 2: I don't know. But I thought you'd Actually, I thought
- 7:02Speaker 2: you'd bring a reasonably good bad habit to this chat,
- 7:04Speaker 2: like your habit of inhaling condensed milk tubes when you're
- 7:08Speaker 2: getting fame at three am. That's a much better habit.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Well that's because I don't do that anymore, Elizabeth. I'm
- 7:13Speaker 3: far more sensible these days, Okay.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I am, because it is. I would have thought that
- 7:18Speaker 1: you might learn from it.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Oh no, I bought bigger caps, yet I will still
- 7:23Speaker 3: do it. Is something scared fundamentally wrong with me?
- 7:27Speaker 2: Are you scared you to miss out because you do
- 7:29Speaker 2: have fun?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Maybe maybe I'm greedy? Is that what it is? Yes?
- 7:34Speaker 1: But slurping. I would have to leave it ages to
- 7:36Speaker 1: slurp it from the top thing.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I know.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And that's the other thing. I burn my tongue nearly
- 7:40Speaker 3: every morning like a goldfish running into the side of
- 7:46Speaker 3: the tank, isn't it. Are you going to learn your
- 7:49Speaker 3: lesson at any point?
- 7:50Speaker 1: Tune into no Dribble for life advice.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Do you look up bewildered every morning? Go how did
- 7:56Speaker 2: that happen? How did that happen? How did that happen?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Forties haven't had it? Oh?
- 8:02Speaker 1: God, mine is so. Mine's a little, a dirty little
- 8:06Speaker 1: secret that I have. Oh I love dtor pimple popper,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Oh so do I. And it relates to if I
- 8:15Speaker 1: get anything on my face, I cannot leave it alone.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And you know, quite regularly I'll go on stage with
- 8:23Speaker 1: something that's bleeding because I was just picking it before.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I thought I'll just fix that, and then suddenly it's
- 8:29Speaker 1: like it's like you are an idiot, Carolyn. So I
- 8:33Speaker 1: just even in that situation where it's like, do you.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Know have you seen the little vacuums. It's like a
- 8:39Speaker 3: like a tiny little tube. It's little vacuum. It's meant
- 8:42Speaker 3: to suck them out.
- 8:43Speaker 2: What what my blackheads? Yes?
- 8:46Speaker 3: Or whatever? Dear little whatever's going on on your face? Oh? Wow?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Do you know my son? My son has little black
- 8:54Speaker 2: heads on his leg And I hadn't even thought about
- 8:57Speaker 2: this as a bad habit or my dirty secret. But
- 8:59Speaker 2: if he's had a really good day, he sleeps really
- 9:01Speaker 2: deeply and sometimes I just sneaking at night and squeeze
- 9:04Speaker 2: it because.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Okay, Liz wins, that's that's weird. How many times work like.
- 9:19Speaker 2: If his legs out, I'll go and check them and
- 9:21Speaker 2: make sure they're okay, and of like, oh, that's what
- 9:23Speaker 2: I could just get it, get.
- 9:25Speaker 1: To get like a head torch out, like a like
- 9:27Speaker 1: a beautician slamp, And.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Oh my god, I don't do it anymore because now
- 9:33Speaker 2: I just do it while we're watching television, and mate,
- 9:35Speaker 2: could I just do too? And it's like, oh, okay, anyway,
- 9:38Speaker 2: that's far more information than I should divulge.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Oh dear, that started well, didn't I?
- 9:43Speaker 1: And that's not even your bad habit? Like, so, what
- 9:45Speaker 1: brat bad habit did you bring to this conversation?
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's boring now by comparison, Oh my mad habit is it?
- 9:52Speaker 2: And it's probably you do it just sort of think
- 9:54Speaker 2: I'm an idiot. I've got lots of bad when you
- 9:56Speaker 2: do think I'm an idiot, I've got lots of bad habits.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I'm perennially late for everything.
- 10:03Speaker 3: But I don't mind that in my old age least,
- 10:05Speaker 3: because if we're meeting up old, just order a wine
- 10:07Speaker 3: and sit there quite comfortably in mindful, you have.
- 10:09Speaker 1: A few moments to yourself.
- 10:10Speaker 2: That's no, that's true. Yeah, anyway, what else The habit
- 10:16Speaker 2: that drives my husband insane, particularly when we're traveling, is
- 10:19Speaker 2: that I like to be thinking four to five meals ahead,
- 10:22Speaker 2: so I know what to have for this meal. So
- 10:24Speaker 2: if we're sitting down for breakfast, I'm like, well, I
- 10:28Speaker 2: don't know whether to order a big breakfast because what
- 10:30Speaker 2: we're going to have a big lunch, We're gonna have
- 10:31Speaker 2: a light lunch, or we're going to go out and
- 10:32Speaker 2: have a really late dinner. And then so that means
- 10:34Speaker 2: if we have a really late dinner tonight, this is
- 10:36Speaker 2: before we had kids, then like I won't want an
- 10:38Speaker 2: early meal the next morning. So maybe I should have
- 10:40Speaker 2: a big meal now, because like I'm always thinking, I
- 10:43Speaker 2: can't just spontaneously go and you know, sit down and
- 10:46Speaker 2: let's just order what you feel like. I'm like, oh god,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I think that fifteen meals ahead.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Now.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Obviously with kids it's even worse. So there you go.
- 10:53Speaker 2: It's im boring.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I am exactly the same though, and it does like
- 10:58Speaker 1: or I'm not even it's sometimes it's for the same reasons,
- 11:00Speaker 1: but It's also like if we're here and say, oh,
- 11:02Speaker 1: what am I going to do for lunch table or
- 11:04Speaker 1: go to the shops or whatever else, I cannot think
- 11:06Speaker 1: about the next meal while I am eating this meal.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And it's like I can. I can think about the
- 11:10Speaker 1: next six meals while I'm eating this meal. But he
- 11:13Speaker 1: doesn't like my mother does it too, and my stepfather
- 11:16Speaker 1: is also not a fan. It's like, can we just
- 11:18Speaker 1: be here now? It's like, well, if your brain can't
- 11:22Speaker 1: deal with two parallel thoughts, yes, we can just have
- 11:25Speaker 1: this sandwich. Right.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Well, that's why that.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So I don't know that that's such a bad habit.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I think, and I think the being perennially late thing, Liz,
- 11:33Speaker 1: is it just because you're trying to I'll just squeeze
- 11:36Speaker 1: this one thing in just before There's so many things
- 11:40Speaker 1: that you.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Have to do.
- 11:42Speaker 3: That's why I'm always and I'm not, frankly.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Just sitting there thinking your.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Next cup of tea.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I'm going to find you a cup that has some
- 11:53Speaker 1: little lines. You know, when you go to the park,
- 11:55Speaker 1: they stop me.
- 11:57Speaker 3: If the top of the cup doesn't stop me, lines
- 12:00Speaker 3: not going to stop me.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Could you imagine that it's offside if you go over
- 12:05Speaker 1: a line, like I feel like this is something you've
- 12:08Speaker 1: done quite successfully in other parts of your life. Is
- 12:10Speaker 1: go that is the limit of where I can go,
- 12:13Speaker 1: And if I go over that, that's not good. I
- 12:16Speaker 1: will lose the ball. So maybe that you should just
- 12:19Speaker 1: consider it like a little netball court.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Right, Like Catherine has never ran that fast. She never
- 12:25Speaker 2: got close to the off side line one time, and
- 12:30Speaker 2: you got a lot I ran into. Now that's a lie.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I saw you play gol attack, Catherine.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Why did you run into the middle of the court
- 12:37Speaker 1: because you'd been playing attack.
- 12:39Speaker 3: I don't know why, but for whatever reason, I just
- 12:42Speaker 3: tootled in there. And then all of New Zealand pointed
- 12:44Speaker 3: and laughed, and I thought, okay, I'll just tootle.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Who was it in the Super Netbles? It was it
- 12:49Speaker 1: Sunday ariang At a ruth ariyang at one in one
- 12:52Speaker 1: game ran into the gold circle and.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Did it last year. But the problem is, like both times,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I think, I don't know if you were commentating from
- 13:00Speaker 2: both times, the commentators missed it could because you're so
- 13:03Speaker 2: focused on the game. Yeah that Like have you seen
- 13:07Speaker 2: those videos? You know? And they show up conferences where
- 13:08Speaker 2: they like, They go, okay, I want you to count
- 13:11Speaker 2: all the people wearing blue shirts, and they'll show you
- 13:15Speaker 2: a whole room of people wearing all different colored shirts,
- 13:19Speaker 2: and you really focus on because you want to win
- 13:20Speaker 2: the prize to meet there. You go, this is my
- 13:22Speaker 2: bad habit. I'm way too competitive, and so I'll be like,
- 13:25Speaker 2: look and I did it once and they go, okay,
- 13:28Speaker 2: I'm going to show it again. Did you say the
- 13:29Speaker 2: gorilla walking through? Saw the gorilla? Are you wanted the
- 13:33Speaker 2: second time? You like, big gorilla person in the gorilla
- 13:37Speaker 2: suit walks through and.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Just like they walk right into the center of things,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and you're so busy focusing on the blue shirts? How
- 13:46Speaker 1: many they're moving around? Have I counted that one?
- 13:48Speaker 3: Do you know what's funny? I reckon I would have
- 13:50Speaker 3: noticed the gorilla forgot.
- 13:52Speaker 2: To kill the shirts. And that's why we're friends.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, combination. We've talked about a lot and taken
- 14:02Speaker 3: up some time here. But the school.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Reunion, I need to know high school reunit. It was great.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I had a great weekend, I will say though, flying
- 14:10Speaker 1: back last night and my flight being delayed and getting
- 14:13Speaker 1: in quite late, and I ended up in a middle
- 14:16Speaker 1: seat which was fine because I thought, I just want
- 14:18Speaker 1: to go to sleep anyway, so I just tucked myself
- 14:20Speaker 1: in and closed my eyes. The woman next to me
- 14:23Speaker 1: jigged her leg the whole way from Brisbane to Sydney,
- 14:29Speaker 1: just jigged it. And I was at a point where
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm pulling the hood over my head because it's like
- 14:34Speaker 1: I could see it. It was out in my peripheral
- 14:37Speaker 1: vision and it's like, honey, I've had no sleep. I'm
- 14:40Speaker 1: so I'm so tired, and I'm focusing on she was.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It wasn't like she was vibrating the seat or anything,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but it's like to kick it.
- 14:50Speaker 3: So do you remember Gordy saying that she gets irrationally
- 14:53Speaker 3: mad about certain things. You can't let it go and
- 14:56Speaker 3: there you go right there bang.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, But no, it was great. I flew up early
- 15:01Speaker 1: Saturday morning, and I flew early because I changed my
- 15:05Speaker 1: flight to make it earlier because we had so many
- 15:07Speaker 1: dribblers caught up with flight cancelations and things for our
- 15:10Speaker 1: Grand Final Eve function and my mate couldn't get down
- 15:13Speaker 1: from Canber so I thought, and I got to go.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm going to be in one of the early flights
- 15:17Speaker 1: of the day. I'm sitting on the flight, and in
- 15:19Speaker 1: that one I was by the window and there was
- 15:21Speaker 1: a woman sitting next to me and their husband was
- 15:23Speaker 1: the row in front of her, and they bring the
- 15:26Speaker 1: tea and coffee cart down and he says, do you
- 15:28Speaker 1: want a bolter? And they both had a beer at
- 15:30Speaker 1: eight o'clock in the morning, and I said, well, I guess.
- 15:32Speaker 3: You're on holidays. I don't know I would go for
- 15:37Speaker 3: a bolter though, no choice. Cheers.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but no. The school reunion was fabulous. I had
- 15:48Speaker 1: such a good time. They're about about half the year came,
- 15:52Speaker 1: which was wonderful and everyone was was in good spirits.
- 15:57Speaker 1: It was a great venue. And in fact that I'm
- 16:00Speaker 1: talking to my friend from school who owns the venue,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and she did yet my husband's friends with Liz and Kat.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Oh that's right.
- 16:05Speaker 3: He's one of the biggest party people I have ever
- 16:13Speaker 3: met in my life. Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So he sent me a message and said they were
- 16:16Speaker 2: listening to the podcast and that your there's your school reunion.
- 16:20Speaker 2: That you went to school with his wife and so
- 16:22Speaker 2: you know, Matthew and him played football together for three
- 16:25Speaker 2: hundred years.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So yeah, well he was very responsible on Saturday night,
- 16:31Speaker 1: he's such a great public twenty old twenty year olds
- 16:34Speaker 1: trying to get in because they have this special membership
- 16:36Speaker 1: that at this hour on a Saturday night they have
- 16:39Speaker 1: seven dollars odd because if you're a member, so obviously
- 16:41Speaker 1: it's like, you know, oh my.
- 16:43Speaker 3: God, sorry, can you remember an now date with dollar drinks? Yeah? Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 3: seven dollard because and they get excited about that.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Do you remember ladies drink free? As a feminist, I
- 16:52Speaker 1: really object to it, but as a poor student it
- 16:54Speaker 1: was excellent. But anyway, so there were a lot of
- 17:01Speaker 1: very young, very poorly dressed for a cold winters night.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I thought, young people, they're queue up to get in,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and he looked stressed. He was not partying then. He
- 17:10Speaker 1: was very much the responsible licensee making sure everything was
- 17:13Speaker 1: under control. But no, the reunion was great, you know,
- 17:17Speaker 1: sadly since last time we had a reunion one of
- 17:20Speaker 1: our classmates died of ovarian cancer. There's another one who
- 17:24Speaker 1: is doing it really tough with breast cancer at the moment.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So we had a really nice little toast to them.
- 17:31Speaker 1: But it just interesting, you know, you go around the
- 17:33Speaker 1: room and everybody, you know, there's the elderly parents crunch,
- 17:38Speaker 1: the kids, the whole Everyone has got shit going on
- 17:43Speaker 1: in their lives and it was really nice to just
- 17:46Speaker 1: stop for a few hours and just have a chat
- 17:48Speaker 1: and go. It was simpler when we were together. You know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we were seventeen last time we were a cohort. But
- 17:56Speaker 1: it was you know, we had people came from Papua
- 17:58Speaker 1: New Guinea, from a poor I came from Sydney, even
- 18:02Speaker 1: I have a lot of people from from far north Queensland.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And it was just it was it was really nice
- 18:08Speaker 1: and really fun. And yeah, and I caught up with
- 18:11Speaker 1: some I tried to talk to everyone. The person we
- 18:16Speaker 1: talked about last week was there, and yeah, well you
- 18:22Speaker 1: know what, I just said hi from a sort of
- 18:25Speaker 1: distance and smiled, and I thought, that's all the time
- 18:27Speaker 1: I'm giving this. There's sixty people here who I want.
- 18:30Speaker 3: You want to to ask her what a problem was?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Well she was very busy at the photo booth all
- 18:36Speaker 1: night anyway. So but it is funny now there's all
- 18:41Speaker 1: these photos popping up, people in the photo booths and
- 18:43Speaker 1: just other people's photos, and you go that four people
- 18:47Speaker 1: would never have had a conversation at high school. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: if you told them that at some stage in the future,
- 18:52Speaker 1: the four of them would have a conversation and be
- 18:55Speaker 1: smiling together in a photo. They would go It would
- 18:57Speaker 1: never happen, but you know, so fortunately for everyone, possibly
- 19:02Speaker 1: even this woman.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I didn't talk to her. All of those ridiculous little
- 19:07Speaker 1: tribes and things have have fallen apart. But it was great.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I have two questions. Yeah, did you sing the school song?
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yes, we sang the school hymn. We also did a
- 19:17Speaker 1: bit of That's what Friends Are For, because that's not
- 19:19Speaker 1: we sang at our year twelve leaving ceremonyal thing the.
- 19:25Speaker 3: End of the road by no, not that one boys
- 19:31Speaker 3: to man?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yeah, what is it?
- 19:34Speaker 3: The road wirl? Don't don't know that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: The rest of that was pretty good though, Yeah, that's beautiful.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I think ours was. Am I ever going to see you?
- 19:51Speaker 3: Per no way? Did that version of it? And also
- 19:55Speaker 3: did your captain speak school captain? Did you make No?
- 19:58Speaker 1: She got away with not speaking. Linda who organized it?
- 20:01Speaker 1: And Melinda is this she is? She's the coroner like
- 20:04Speaker 1: she was. She's just retired, but retired, which is a
- 20:07Speaker 1: ridiculous age to retire. But she couldn't go and do
- 20:09Speaker 1: other stuff. But like she has this uber career and amazing.
- 20:14Speaker 1: There were a couple of people I talked to during
- 20:15Speaker 1: the night and I said, I talked to my kids
- 20:17Speaker 1: about you all the time. So Melinda's one of them.
- 20:20Speaker 1: When she left high school, she had quite a poor
- 20:22Speaker 1: it was called a tee score, so she had so
- 20:26Speaker 1: nine ninety was the high. She got seven fifteen or
- 20:29Speaker 1: something like that, and she went into nursing for a while,
- 20:32Speaker 1: but then later on went back and did a law
- 20:34Speaker 1: degree and then became a barrister and then like the
- 20:38Speaker 1: coroner so is which is in Queensland. I don't know
- 20:41Speaker 1: what it's like everyone else, but certainly this role is
- 20:43Speaker 1: a legal review role, so it's not a medical examiner
- 20:47Speaker 1: type thing. But you know, at school, she was not academic.
- 20:51Speaker 1: She was never going to be the legal superstar. There's
- 20:53Speaker 1: another woman who is exactly the same who's now an
- 20:56Speaker 1: associate professor at the University of Queensland working like energy policy.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And you know, so high school it's a step. It's
- 21:05Speaker 1: a step. It's not a permanent thing or whatever. But yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 1: it's just I had I had so much fun. I
- 21:12Speaker 1: did one shot, which was one more than I thought
- 21:16Speaker 1: I was going to When I was in my uber
- 21:18Speaker 1: on the way there. I'm like, your measure for success
- 21:21Speaker 1: will be to not do shots tonight.
- 21:23Speaker 3: So what was the shot of choice? Though it's important tequila?
- 21:27Speaker 3: That wasn't my choice.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Just a tequila yeah, yeah, just straight too. Yeah, I
- 21:32Speaker 1: would have liked. You know what what we have rebranded
- 21:35Speaker 1: a Helen Ready and we sing iron Woman, but other
- 21:38Speaker 1: people might know it as a cocksack and cowboy.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Oh they're good? Is that the Scotch snaps?
- 21:44Speaker 1: I can Bailey, yes's got the two. My friend a
- 21:50Speaker 1: long time ago, her son was marrying someone he didn't
- 21:53Speaker 1: she didn't really love, and she was very upset. They
- 21:56Speaker 1: were going to have cocksucking cowboys on the bridle tab
- 22:04Speaker 1: But no, it was good. And yeah, no, I didn't
- 22:07Speaker 1: have a fist fight with anyone, which is good. No
- 22:12Speaker 1: one had a fist fight as far as I could see.
- 22:14Speaker 1: There was one girl who left our school early, and
- 22:16Speaker 1: I remember that she did have a fist fight with
- 22:18Speaker 1: another girl and they didn't talk much. But that was
- 22:21Speaker 1: during high school. That was back in the eighties.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I was with.
- 22:24Speaker 1: There were fists, but it was like it was a
- 22:27Speaker 1: physical fight. What do you mean you're going to hit
- 22:29Speaker 1: each other just just be mean to one another until
- 22:31Speaker 1: someone gets an eating disorder. That's that's a Seinfeld joke.
- 22:35Speaker 3: I just stopped. That's not a no. Driple recommends it.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Driple recommends no. That's Elaine used to. Elaine said that, Okay,
- 22:48Speaker 1: so we should there's there's I don't know, there's a
- 22:50Speaker 1: lot of network going on. We should have a little
- 22:52Speaker 1: break and then come back and talk about some knitball
- 23:08Speaker 1: welcome back. There's so much to talk about in the
- 23:10Speaker 1: netball world at the moment, and over this episode today
- 23:14Speaker 1: being Wednesday and Friday's episode, we're going to be talking
- 23:17Speaker 1: about the commonalth games. We're going to talk a bit
- 23:19Speaker 1: about New Zealand, We're going to talk about coin tosses
- 23:22Speaker 1: and nails getting done. But Liz, there's some other stuff
- 23:25Speaker 1: going on closer to home.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Look, big weekend of news for our sport, and some
- 23:32Speaker 2: good stuff that I do want to get to is
- 23:34Speaker 2: the fact that there was some great Olympic sort of
- 23:37Speaker 2: announcements on the weekend from north of the border. I mean,
- 23:40Speaker 2: I wonder if it's a coincidence that you're in Queensland
- 23:42Speaker 2: and then there were some good things happening in Queensland.
- 23:45Speaker 2: The Diamonds took a couple of huge steps towards Commonwealth
- 23:48Speaker 2: Games goal in the last few nights, but unfortunately some
- 23:52Speaker 2: details of the CPA negotiations did leak into the public
- 23:55Speaker 2: arena and we're in the press on the weekend, which,
- 23:59Speaker 2: as you both know, I did think actually long and
- 24:01Speaker 2: hard about coming on to the show today and whether
- 24:03Speaker 2: it was the right thing to do given my role
- 24:05Speaker 2: as chair of Netball Australia. But I did feel like
- 24:07Speaker 2: there was a bit of an underlying assumption that Netball
- 24:09Speaker 2: Australia has the money but doesn't want to pay the
- 24:12Speaker 2: players what they're worth, and I just want to say
- 24:15Speaker 2: that categorically that's not the case. We've actually invested really
- 24:19Speaker 2: heavily in the last sort of six to twelve months
- 24:23Speaker 2: our commercial team so that we can capitalize on our
- 24:26Speaker 2: Channel nine deal, which is the biggest free toware footprint
- 24:29Speaker 2: that netball has ever had, and so we're able to
- 24:32Speaker 2: land that deal and it provides us with enormous opportunity
- 24:35Speaker 2: over the next five years. So there is an absolute
- 24:38Speaker 2: laser like focus to make our players the best paid
- 24:42Speaker 2: female athletes in this country, and that is a huge
- 24:45Speaker 2: ask given that we are sisters doing it for ourselves right.
- 24:49Speaker 2: We don't have the big brother sport that perhaps other
- 24:52Speaker 2: female codes might have, so we've got to be more
- 24:55Speaker 2: resourceful and more resilient than others. But the decision has
- 24:59Speaker 2: been taken to in in that and so we really
- 25:02Speaker 2: want to get our athletes back to being not only
- 25:06Speaker 2: having the best pay but the best conditions. And it's
- 25:09Speaker 2: still an aspiration, it's not yet backed by money, but
- 25:12Speaker 2: we've got a strategy in place that we're confident in
- 25:14Speaker 2: over the next couple of years that will pay dividends
- 25:17Speaker 2: for the players. And I've got to say personally, the
- 25:20Speaker 2: suggestion that netball Australia is splashing money on employee expenses
- 25:24Speaker 2: and executive pay while starting players of a pay rise
- 25:27Speaker 2: is actually quite offensive And I just want to provide
- 25:30Speaker 2: a statistic that I think is interesting. So the Australian
- 25:32Speaker 2: Sports Commission provides reporting to sports on where they sit
- 25:38Speaker 2: compared to other sports of similar revenue around a lot
- 25:40Speaker 2: of different statistics, and netb All Australia is sitting at
- 25:43Speaker 2: the second lowest for employee spend of any sport in
- 25:47Speaker 2: a comparable revenue stream in Australia. And that's despite the
- 25:49Speaker 2: fact that we've got a professional competition, right, So netb
- 25:52Speaker 2: All Australia runs lane and that doesn't mean we get
- 25:54Speaker 2: everything right, but we do run really lane. And the
- 25:57Speaker 2: other piece that I thought I just wanted to say
- 25:59Speaker 2: was that, like Catherine, you and I were one of
- 26:03Speaker 2: a large group of players who set up the Players
- 26:05Speaker 2: Association back in two thousand and five. And when I
- 26:09Speaker 2: was part of that group, I actually was threatened with
- 26:12Speaker 2: being stripped of the Diamonds captaincy. But I really believed
- 26:15Speaker 2: in the players having the right to seek the best
- 26:19Speaker 2: conditions and pay that they could. So it's just fanciful
- 26:23Speaker 2: to think that a board that I'd chair would try
- 26:24Speaker 2: to somehow short change the players. And in fact, and
- 26:28Speaker 2: I can, you know, we can look back at the
- 26:30Speaker 2: last twelve months, for the last two years, the Diamonds
- 26:34Speaker 2: pay deal that was agreed to most recently saw the
- 26:36Speaker 2: Diamonds get a forty percent pay increase and a historic
- 26:40Speaker 2: revenue sharing model that was implemented for the first time.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And as an organization, we're really proud of that that
- 26:46Speaker 2: we're able to do that, you know, with the Players
- 26:48Speaker 2: Association for the Diamonds. But the fact of the matter
- 26:52Speaker 2: is though, that we're not yet set up for that
- 26:53Speaker 2: in an SSN context, and we've asked the players to
- 26:56Speaker 2: give us a year's grace to do it now. I
- 26:59Speaker 2: don't want to speak where the leaks reported on the
- 27:02Speaker 2: weekend were from, but whoever did it can't have the
- 27:05Speaker 2: players of the game's best interest at heart, because for me,
- 27:07Speaker 2: the whole reason I'm in this role is for the players,
- 27:10Speaker 2: and I firmly believe that netball can once again lead
- 27:13Speaker 2: the way in remuneration and conditions for our athletes. But
- 27:16Speaker 2: the fact of the matter is that needs to be
- 27:17Speaker 2: done responsibly. It's not sexy, I get that, but it's
- 27:20Speaker 2: the truth and I just wanted to get that out there.
- 27:24Speaker 2: But that's not all that's happening.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Right.
- 27:25Speaker 2: So we've had these reports on the weekend, But then
- 27:28Speaker 2: the flip side is there's so much great stuff going
- 27:32Speaker 2: on that I do want us to talk about. And
- 27:34Speaker 2: I know we're going to talk about the Commonwealth Games
- 27:36Speaker 2: in a second. I know, Kathy, you've been commentating and
- 27:38Speaker 2: I think we need for me to stop talking and
- 27:40Speaker 2: to hear your voice. But I can't tell you how
- 27:43Speaker 2: excited I was to pick up the paper on the
- 27:46Speaker 2: weekend and see that the Queensland Premiere David Chris A.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Fooley has nominated or picked out three sports that an
- 27:54Speaker 2: he says, has said publicly he wants to see these
- 27:56Speaker 2: three sports appear in the twenty thirty two Olympics and
- 27:59Speaker 2: they are surf, life saving, cricket and netfall. Like how
- 28:05Speaker 2: ranged that? So yeah, So like I had this amazing
- 28:09Speaker 2: week camera. I was really like, no, we want to
- 28:12Speaker 2: pay out plays more and we're trying really hard. And
- 28:14Speaker 2: then the flip side is that you go, there was
- 28:17Speaker 2: a great article in the nine newspapers about like netball
- 28:24Speaker 2: its history in the Commonwealth Games, and you know there
- 28:27Speaker 2: was I gave an interview and a number of the
- 28:29Speaker 2: players did it gave a really good overview of the
- 28:32Speaker 2: evolution of our sport and the Commonwealth Games. And then
- 28:36Speaker 2: the logical part to that is that should we see
- 28:39Speaker 2: ourselves in the Olympics in twenty thirty two, I suspect
- 28:42Speaker 2: we will absolutely be able to show the Olympic family
- 28:45Speaker 2: the value of our sport. So I was so boyed
- 28:48Speaker 2: to go, you know what, there's actually all this great
- 28:50Speaker 2: stuff happening at the moment, and I really want to
- 28:52Speaker 2: focus on that and get that done. So AnyWho looks
- 28:56Speaker 2: that's just a little bit of background, and you know,
- 28:59Speaker 2: I just I am so buoyant about the future of
- 29:02Speaker 2: our sport and so confident. So I'm just hoping that
- 29:05Speaker 2: we can get this current pay deal but put to
- 29:07Speaker 2: bed pretty quickly and get on with things.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I was so relieved to see the premiere of Queensland
- 29:13Speaker 1: come out and say that, because I've got to say
- 29:16Speaker 1: I was a bit worried last week that it's like, well,
- 29:18Speaker 1: what the hell does this do to the Olympic bid?
- 29:22Speaker 1: If we're starting to then, as you know, I've worked
- 29:24Speaker 1: in a number of professional sports and this is fairly
- 29:27Speaker 1: standard behavior. You know, there are leaks, there are obviously
- 29:33Speaker 1: different people who have different interests in the light. But
- 29:37Speaker 1: you know, I'm firmly of the belief grow the pie.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Everyone can have more if the pie is bigger, and
- 29:43Speaker 1: I think that's what you know. I did ask a
- 29:46Speaker 1: couple of questions of a few people at Netball Australia
- 29:48Speaker 1: last week, Liz, after I saw the article and the
- 29:51Speaker 1: thing I could just piss me off because like the
- 29:53Speaker 1: executive salaries thing, there was no context in there that
- 29:56Speaker 1: the reason that's grown so much is it includes Netball
- 29:58Speaker 1: World Cup executive salaries, which are fully funded by the
- 30:02Speaker 1: agreements there, So like it really looks bad and without
- 30:07Speaker 1: having been given the context, and you know, it's always
- 30:10Speaker 1: it's always interesting if you stop and think where did
- 30:13Speaker 1: this leak come from? And then think, well, what is
- 30:16Speaker 1: that person or those person's interests in leaking this at
- 30:20Speaker 1: that time? And I'm not you know, I'm not going
- 30:22Speaker 1: to say anything further. Just whatever it is you see
- 30:26Speaker 1: in that regard in the press, whether it be about
- 30:28Speaker 1: Netball CPA or whatever. It's like, you've got to understand
- 30:31Speaker 1: that there are people pushing messages that are something that
- 30:35Speaker 1: they want and it's always smart to just go is
- 30:37Speaker 1: this the whole story?
- 30:38Speaker 3: But it's also a big head scratcher, isn't it, because
- 30:41Speaker 3: surely you're smart enough to realize that anything that plays
- 30:44Speaker 3: out publicly can have the potential to damage the brand.
- 30:47Speaker 3: The brand that is trying to source big responsors and
- 30:50Speaker 3: trying to get that money to therefore play the players.
- 30:53Speaker 3: The players.
- 30:58Speaker 1: It's been a big couplet, right, it's not doing the negotiations.
- 31:02Speaker 1: We've got someone who can say, pay the players doing
- 31:05Speaker 1: the negotiations.
- 31:06Speaker 3: A lot of news is I don't have to do
- 31:07Speaker 3: the ball for two more days either.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, I think we could just really move on
- 31:13Speaker 2: and talk about the great things that are happening in
- 31:15Speaker 2: our sport at the moment.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 31:16Speaker 2: The Olympics stuff is just you know, funny. My mom
- 31:20Speaker 2: said to be something the other day. She goes, Oh,
- 31:22Speaker 2: are you in the Olympics yet? And I said, Mom,
- 31:24Speaker 2: let me assure you if we are in the Olympics,
- 31:26Speaker 2: you will know because I'll be drunk for a week
- 31:28Speaker 2: and I'll, like you, i won't be able to talk sense.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I mean, and then I've got me worrying because I'm like,
- 31:33Speaker 2: maybe she thinks I don't talk sense anyway, like maybe
- 31:36Speaker 2: she can't tell the difference.
- 31:37Speaker 1: But well she thinks you swear too much, or this
- 31:39Speaker 1: is true, she doesn't have me as the daughter, which
- 31:42Speaker 1: she'd be fucking relieved about. I imagine, you know, Liz, like,
- 31:47Speaker 1: what what is that? When does the Olympics decision get made?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Do we We don't quite know exactly the end of
- 31:56Speaker 2: this year, maybe early next year. There's a lot going
- 31:58Speaker 2: on like in that that Iic level around fit for
- 32:01Speaker 2: the future and ensuring the games don't get too big
- 32:04Speaker 2: that they're affordable. There's you know, you don't have an
- 32:07Speaker 2: explosion of athletes sort of attending, so there's a few
- 32:12Speaker 2: decisions that have to be made that then will affect
- 32:14Speaker 2: what can be done. But just to have that endorsement
- 32:16Speaker 2: from the Queensland premiere it is.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Just phenomenal, so unreal.
- 32:20Speaker 2: But you know, the great thing is it's not just
- 32:22Speaker 2: being in the Olympics. It's the fact that if it happens,
- 32:24Speaker 2: there's a possibility and I think this was mentioned in
- 32:28Speaker 2: the story that the outcome is for netball is that
- 32:32Speaker 2: you know, this arena where the Firebirds play gets an
- 32:35Speaker 2: upgrade and there can be more people coming into there,
- 32:37Speaker 2: and like it just has a massive flow and effect
- 32:40Speaker 2: to the sport, not only just through Queensland and particularly
- 32:43Speaker 2: through regional areas, which is you know where one of
- 32:46Speaker 2: the few sports that has you know, every small town
- 32:49Speaker 2: community across Australia where you go to netball is there
- 32:53Speaker 2: right and you know the premius enter. I want a
- 32:55Speaker 2: little girl who playing netball in Newpoo And funnily enough,
- 32:57Speaker 2: I've done some coaching clinics I think with you Catherine
- 32:59Speaker 2: and New Pool over the years, so yeah, I want
- 33:01Speaker 2: to see a little girl who plays that ball and
- 33:03Speaker 2: you and be able to look at the biggest stage
- 33:05Speaker 2: on earth and see that it's achievable. So he really
- 33:08Speaker 2: does understand the power of our sport in that regard.
- 33:12Speaker 2: So yeah, look, really good things are happening.
- 33:14Speaker 1: And that's it's crazy actually to think so that it's
- 33:19Speaker 1: only six years and this is something that on the
- 33:21Speaker 1: weekend at my school reunion where we're going, how is
- 33:23Speaker 1: forty years past? Six years goes by in an absolute heartbeat,
- 33:28Speaker 1: doesn't it. It's just it's really it's crazy how fast
- 33:32Speaker 1: this is going to creep up on us. You know,
- 33:34Speaker 1: the paras Olympics were on it this time two years ago,
- 33:37Speaker 1: So that's nuts, isn't it.
- 33:39Speaker 3: So well, anyway, you know it's now very exciting Monday.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I have listening to you comentation.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Till we look. Oh my goodness, we are by far
- 33:50Speaker 3: and away the sharpest team that I have seen out
- 33:53Speaker 3: on court. I got to say, little gobsmacked by a
- 33:57Speaker 3: nineteen goal win over England yesterday, and I think I
- 34:02Speaker 3: put England in my top three, might have been maybe
- 34:07Speaker 3: bronze medalists. I don't even think they're going to make
- 34:10Speaker 3: the bronze medal game at this stage because Gander.
- 34:14Speaker 1: A top of that pool, they're picked up with the
- 34:17Speaker 1: other pool at the moments, isn't it Uganda in New
- 34:19Speaker 1: Zealand a top of the other pool and we are
- 34:23Speaker 1: it's Australia.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And South Africa. So South Africa hasn't had a loss.
- 34:27Speaker 3: They are looking sharp and I remember Gordion saying she
- 34:30Speaker 3: wanted a couple of days to make a decision on
- 34:32Speaker 3: where she was thinking South Africa was going to finish.
- 34:35Speaker 3: I cannot wait. Thursday is when England plays South Africa.
- 34:40Speaker 3: That one will determine who comes in second in the pool.
- 34:44Speaker 3: What looking at South Africa at the moment far out,
- 34:49Speaker 3: it's going to be closer. So here's a comparison. So
- 34:52Speaker 3: Australia played Tonga obviously beat them by sixty one, so
- 34:55Speaker 3: it was ninety nine to thirty eight. South Africa played
- 34:59Speaker 3: top that it was ninety six to forty two. Not
- 35:06Speaker 3: two different those school lines there. So I think even
- 35:09Speaker 3: coming up against Australia is going to be a really
- 35:11Speaker 3: good battle. But I can't wait to see what happens
- 35:12Speaker 3: against England.
- 35:14Speaker 1: That Australia tongue again, there was some great stuff in
- 35:17Speaker 1: there wasn't it. There's being Unique Polavi and Julita VeVe
- 35:20Speaker 1: and you know there's a number of players there who
- 35:22Speaker 1: are much more familiar to us now because they have
- 35:25Speaker 1: played in our Supernetball comp And I love this so
- 35:29Speaker 1: much more that I know the other teams better than
- 35:32Speaker 1: I would have.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Do you know the bit of a story behind the
- 35:36Speaker 2: tongue and tongue of Talas So that team, I think
- 35:40Speaker 2: they were ranked like twenty third or twenty four to
- 35:44Speaker 2: twenty second in the world. And then there was some
- 35:47Speaker 2: development work that was done by Netball Australia Tongue that's
- 35:49Speaker 2: funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trades, so
- 35:52Speaker 2: defact have worked through a number of sporting organizations to
- 35:56Speaker 2: develop I guess closer ties to different countries in the
- 36:00Speaker 2: region by way of sport. So Netball does a bit
- 36:02Speaker 2: of that work and the Tongan team Tonga were able
- 36:06Speaker 2: to appoint a head coach who then went and looked
- 36:08Speaker 2: through the Tongan diaspora to find Togan athletes playing in
- 36:13Speaker 2: Australia and New Zealand. That's how she picked up Palita
- 36:15Speaker 2: Erve and Unique Plavi and put together an other players
- 36:19Speaker 2: and so this year they've been able to play in
- 36:22Speaker 2: Tonga for the first time ever and you know, we
- 36:25Speaker 2: set a junior team over there and there were some
- 36:27Speaker 2: games there and then. And they've also been able to
- 36:30Speaker 2: play in different tournaments in Australia so and you know
- 36:34Speaker 2: tournaments with p ANDNG and the Black Swan's our first
- 36:37Speaker 2: Nations team. So that's really seen their development. I think
- 36:39Speaker 2: they're ranked number six in the world, is that right,
- 36:41Speaker 2: Well they're eighth.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Now, yes, the twenty second, but they didn't even have
- 36:46Speaker 3: a team, you know, if not going even further back
- 36:48Speaker 3: than that. Unbelievable to think where they've come from. Yeah,
- 36:52Speaker 3: even you know, you think back to last year when
- 36:53Speaker 3: you had Cattuoviti and Monti and Gerard playing for them,
- 36:57Speaker 3: big gun names that have really put them on the
- 36:59Speaker 3: map and got some great results. And it was so
- 37:02Speaker 3: good to see them on debut at a Commonwealth Games
- 37:04Speaker 3: as well. That's such a special moment. And then Halita
- 37:07Speaker 3: VeVe was the flag ceremony, as was Mary chol Locke
- 37:12Speaker 3: for U Gander. It's so great, so good.
- 37:14Speaker 2: So remember when Shirazzle was the flag bearer in Deli.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Yeah about that was Yeah, it was a thousand degrees.
- 37:23Speaker 4: It was Deli, What did you wear when we had
- 37:27Speaker 4: a gray skirt with with multi colored tops on.
- 37:30Speaker 3: So I had like a blue one. Someone might have
- 37:32Speaker 3: had an orange, someone might have had a green, but
- 37:33Speaker 3: they were all dark versions of those colors. By the
- 37:36Speaker 3: time we got out, we were drenched in sweat. It
- 37:39Speaker 3: was so hot. They had barely anyone in the stadium.
- 37:43Speaker 3: So you know Cherrell's big moment. Yeah, it wasn't like
- 37:47Speaker 3: mcg like it was in Melbourne.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Maybe we can get Shirella along to a live event
- 37:51Speaker 1: sometime to be the flag bearer and we can all
- 37:54Speaker 1: give her the appropriate chears that she bring us.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Bachelor and they can both hold them up.
- 37:59Speaker 2: We could, Yeah, that would be great. Actually, I was
- 38:01Speaker 2: commentating that in Deli, and I was supposed to so
- 38:05Speaker 2: I knew that. When Charell came onto the screen, I
- 38:07Speaker 2: was supposed to talk, but I started to cry. I
- 38:12Speaker 2: was so excited, Bra like Netbilk had this show. Netball
- 38:16Speaker 2: team had never had a flag bearer before for the
- 38:18Speaker 2: opening ceremony.
- 38:20Speaker 1: I'm surprised you didn't start squeezing someone's black head.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Anyway, Nicole Livingston jumped in and picked up for me.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Because I just couldn't talk. So I was part of
- 38:31Speaker 2: the reason there was not enough cheering in the stadium
- 38:33Speaker 2: because I couldn't talk ha ha.
- 38:35Speaker 3: But it's been it's been so good. It's been awesome
- 38:38Speaker 3: to see the Diamonds get up and away too solid wins.
- 38:43Speaker 3: I've got blowie now at the crack of dawn in
- 38:45Speaker 3: Australia on Wednesday morning at six am start here, so
- 38:51Speaker 3: I think it's like a nine pm game over there.
- 38:53Speaker 3: So they've gone from playing at eleven am in Glasgow
- 38:55Speaker 3: to nine pm in Glasgow, went really early to really late.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Yeah, don't you a question, Catherine just about like it's
- 39:02Speaker 2: a bit of a teching netball question. But as evident
- 39:06Speaker 2: that Stacey Rikovic has I guess her starting seven, her
- 39:10Speaker 2: top line. And I know that we don't talk about
- 39:11Speaker 2: starting seven so much anymore because, particularly in SSN, the
- 39:15Speaker 2: interchange rule just means that coaches have lots of flexibility.
- 39:19Speaker 2: That doesn't happen obviously in international netball. So we saw
- 39:24Speaker 2: that seven really do the job in the first half,
- 39:27Speaker 2: and that second quarter against England was unbelievable. Would you
- 39:31Speaker 2: think that we'll see a bit of a mix up
- 39:33Speaker 2: against Malawi in that line so that you don't end
- 39:35Speaker 2: up with almost two separate lines.
- 39:37Speaker 3: So you know, if I was shocked that she kept
- 39:40Speaker 3: the same starting seven from the game too, absolutely, because
- 39:44Speaker 3: that's like I mean, obviously worried about what England was
- 39:48Speaker 3: going to do and how they would play, and you know,
- 39:51Speaker 3: wanted to start with that strong. But I think no
- 39:53Speaker 3: matter who we put on in a seven, we can
- 39:56Speaker 3: beat anybody. So I was surprised it was exactly the same.
- 39:59Speaker 3: I thought there might have been one or two changes maybe,
- 40:02Speaker 3: but it will absolutely be completely different starting seven when
- 40:06Speaker 3: they play Malawi, surely.
- 40:08Speaker 1: But they might go back to this for South Africa.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think South Africa is going to be
- 40:14Speaker 3: right on the radar now definitely, So if she thinks
- 40:17Speaker 3: this is the strong, strongest starting seven, but I think
- 40:19Speaker 3: you've also got a way up who you're playing against
- 40:21Speaker 3: and what players are going to be best on them.
- 40:24Speaker 3: But it was interesting not to see Cardwell so much,
- 40:27Speaker 3: I thought for England yesterday against Australia. She only came
- 40:30Speaker 3: on right at the end of the game.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was surprising. She's the most one of
- 40:35Speaker 2: the most experienced ones for them. But I got to
- 40:37Speaker 2: say I thought the England front line didn't look too bad.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I thought their front line was good. I thought their
- 40:43Speaker 2: back line was good. They just there was just a
- 40:46Speaker 2: bit of a missing sort of spark I thought in
- 40:49Speaker 2: the mid court. I don't know mid courts.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Yeah, we will always blame We're going to blame me.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Hello, their best on ground, So there you go, Carol
- 41:01Speaker 2: I Jane Ellison was fantastic for them last night.
- 41:04Speaker 3: But they smashed Australia in defensive winds. They had like
- 41:07Speaker 3: ten intercepts to four. Absolutely killed this. But it was
- 41:10Speaker 3: the unforced errors off the back of those wins. I
- 41:13Speaker 3: think the pressure from Australia that you know, they turned
- 41:16Speaker 3: the ball over so quickly, so I think quite a
- 41:18Speaker 3: few easy fixes as far as England's concerned going ahead.
- 41:22Speaker 3: You know, they did stilly stepping things and throwing balls
- 41:25Speaker 3: out of court and stuff like that, so I don't
- 41:27Speaker 3: think there'll be too upset. They won the last quarter
- 41:29Speaker 3: which is huge twelve ten Yeah, so lots to take
- 41:34Speaker 3: out from that. But I think Australia looking as the goods.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Oh so much to talk about, but we'll come back
- 41:41Speaker 1: on Friday and talk about some more netbally things. We
- 41:43Speaker 1: just need a little little break now. Okay, gosh, we're
- 41:58Speaker 1: running long today because we have so much to talk about.
- 42:02Speaker 1: But I've just got a little things that make me go.
- 42:15Speaker 1: And it's just a little bit of a tune up
- 42:16Speaker 1: for everybody. We're getting very passionate on Facebook again, and
- 42:22Speaker 1: that's great, we love that. But remember please don't write
- 42:26Speaker 1: anything in the notable Facebook group or anywhere, really, but
- 42:31Speaker 1: don't say something that you wouldn't say to that person
- 42:33Speaker 1: if you were sitting opposite them making a two full
- 42:36Speaker 1: cup of tea. And you know, disagreements are wonderful. And
- 42:39Speaker 1: then we've got ninety nine out of one hundred all
- 42:43Speaker 1: people respectfully disagree. But there was some passion around this dress,
- 42:49Speaker 1: the diamonds dresses, and it's like, I think we're all
- 42:52Speaker 1: agreeing here that there was something a bit a bit
- 42:55Speaker 1: funny going on there, that the you know, whatever was
- 42:57Speaker 1: going So how can we be arguing about it? Like
- 43:00Speaker 1: it's just just just remember it's it's a plate we're talking.
- 43:04Speaker 1: We're trying to make lives better here talking about netball,
- 43:07Speaker 1: So just just bring your kinder self and reread your
- 43:11Speaker 1: remark and think how could that be misconstrued? Does that
- 43:14Speaker 1: come across the way.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I want absolutely here here, one hundred percent. And I
- 43:18Speaker 2: think I've said this before that social media is the
- 43:20Speaker 2: thing that allows the things that you used to yell
- 43:22Speaker 2: at your television to now write it right. So, and
- 43:26Speaker 2: I've said this before, but my dad used to watch
- 43:28Speaker 2: the footy, my late dad, and he used to yell
- 43:30Speaker 2: all sorts of things of the television, and now my
- 43:32Speaker 2: husband yells all sorts of things of the television. And
- 43:34Speaker 2: we used to when I was little. We used to
- 43:35Speaker 2: laugh at my dad, and now my kids laugh at
- 43:37Speaker 2: my husband. But neither of them had social media, so
- 43:40Speaker 2: nobody knew they could feel what they like. It's fine,
- 43:43Speaker 2: yes I'm married to a laddie. But in terms of
- 43:45Speaker 2: the dress, can I just ask Carolyn, I mean, you're
- 43:48Speaker 2: the first person to worry thought.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Yours didn't look tight like that?
- 43:58Speaker 1: No, well, it was the size too big for me
- 44:00Speaker 1: for starters, so it wouldn't even it wouldn't be the
- 44:02Speaker 1: size that I would wear. It's a twelve to nine
- 44:04Speaker 1: or ten, and it was certainly the length was fine.
- 44:08Speaker 1: I thought the thing the opportunity that we missed at
- 44:11Speaker 1: the time by focusing too much on the fact that
- 44:13Speaker 1: I don't have a tan is to look too much
- 44:16Speaker 1: of the dress, so I can't.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I didn't know, only we knew. Yeah, back then, we
- 44:21Speaker 3: would have done a deep diet.
- 44:23Speaker 1: We would have maybe we would have you know, we
- 44:25Speaker 1: would have all taken turns wearing it, and you could
- 44:27Speaker 1: have done some shit. Oh I could have taken you
- 44:29Speaker 1: out at the hoop in the backyard. And no. But yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: I don't. It's it's interesting. I'm not I'm not sure.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the Commwealth Games Organization organizes those dresses,
- 44:39Speaker 1: not Netball Australia, but Valor have been supplying uniforms for
- 44:44Speaker 1: Thunderbird swifts giants for a long time and I've not
- 44:46Speaker 1: seen I've not seen this sort of riding up thing,
- 44:49Speaker 1: so I don't. I don't know what's happening.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Interesting anyway, it's got everybody's attention dress Gate. Everyone's exited around.
- 44:59Speaker 1: So Catherine no Dribble recommends.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Have you seen the Kylie minogu docco.
- 45:05Speaker 2: No, But i'd it's great.
- 45:07Speaker 3: It's so interesting and you forget, but you also get
- 45:10Speaker 3: a nice little flashback to the eighties, you know, like
- 45:13Speaker 3: when Neighbors was the biggest thing going around and what
- 45:17Speaker 3: a superstar Little Kylie Minogue was it's so good worth
- 45:20Speaker 3: a watch everybody.
- 45:21Speaker 1: It is so incredible what she has done. And you know,
- 45:24Speaker 1: coming from Erinsborough No, but I mean she did come
- 45:27Speaker 1: from suburban Melbourne.
- 45:28Speaker 2: It's like, I know what, I haven't seen it. But
- 45:32Speaker 2: I was listening to somebody revealed on radio because I
- 45:34Speaker 2: still listened to Heritage Media sometimes, and I was saying,
- 45:39Speaker 2: the thing that really stood out to them was the
- 45:42Speaker 2: fact that she has never been involved in a scandal,
- 45:45Speaker 2: Like she's never had a public beef with another celebrity.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Like she's just been a good human and you don't
- 45:52Speaker 2: think about that, and then so you sit down and
- 45:55Speaker 2: watch this, But that's the thing that stands out is
- 45:57Speaker 2: what a good human she is, Like she's you know,
- 46:00Speaker 2: kept herself clean and nice and all the sorts. I
- 46:03Speaker 2: don't know if that's the right terminology, but like, whoever,
- 46:08Speaker 2: this person that reviewed it, they were like, that's the
- 46:10Speaker 2: thing that comes through about what a sterling person she is.
- 46:13Speaker 3: As scandalous as it got was her relationship with Michael Hutchins.
- 46:18Speaker 2: But that gives a nice bit of balance, doesn't it
- 46:20Speaker 2: so great?
- 46:21Speaker 3: Because it's also a turning point in all of her music,
- 46:23Speaker 3: you know so many times. Anyway, top watch, everybody jump
- 46:27Speaker 3: on board, have a look.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I also have another No Dribble recommends TV wise. It's
- 46:33Speaker 1: on stand and it's called The f Ward, so it's
- 46:36Speaker 1: set in a hospital. It's six episodes, Australian sort of
- 46:41Speaker 1: drama comedy really that they do actually have footage of
- 46:45Speaker 1: real surgery, so maybe you know, not everyone loves that.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I loved it, but I just thought it was fantastic
- 46:52Speaker 1: and I really enjoyed the first episode, but it got
- 46:54Speaker 1: stronger after that. It was just it's one of the
- 46:57Speaker 1: best pieces of Australian TV I have seen in a
- 47:00Speaker 1: long time. Wow, it's said in a hospital right on
- 47:03Speaker 1: the beach though, so sometimes it's you think, did you
- 47:06Speaker 1: guys want to make er or away? Because sometimes they're
- 47:10Speaker 1: just having a conversation on the beach, and so we
- 47:13Speaker 1: just started singing, you know, we belong together.
- 47:18Speaker 3: We have got your weak covered with Netball and Kylie
- 47:22Speaker 3: docos and their wards.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So when you go into a fit of depression that
- 47:25Speaker 1: the Commonwealth Games Netball is over, these are the things
- 47:28Speaker 1: that you can line up.
- 47:30Speaker 2: But can I just say the other thing a bit
- 47:33Speaker 2: of a note of a recommends so on the seven
- 47:35Speaker 2: plus app like it's been so good to flick through
- 47:39Speaker 2: everything because it comes up on air TV. And my
- 47:42Speaker 2: ten year old son, I didn't see this coming, is
- 47:45Speaker 2: obsessed with the bowls, the lawn bowls.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Oh so we're at a little audio booth. Our little
- 47:51Speaker 3: booth that we do the netball and is next door
- 47:53Speaker 3: to the bowls commentators, and they are doing some very
- 47:57Speaker 3: very long hours. That's interesting. We actually thought they would
- 48:01Speaker 3: be quite quiet and they would hear us screaming about
- 48:03Speaker 3: the nipball. I don't know if you screamed too much
- 48:05Speaker 3: in commentary when you're doing the balls.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Then the three on three basketball, he's like, what's this?
- 48:12Speaker 2: That's a training drill that's been turned into a metal sport.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Frankly on that one, Murray Cook, the original Red Wig,
- 48:20Speaker 1: his daughter Gemma is in the para three on three
- 48:25Speaker 1: through basketball team. And this is something I absolutely love,
- 48:29Speaker 1: is that the para sports and the and the other
- 48:33Speaker 1: sports are all mixed in together. They're not separate comps.
- 48:35Speaker 2: And it's like, so good, that's so good. I saw
- 48:38Speaker 2: an interview with Murray and his daughter whose name escapes me, Gemma, Gemma,
- 48:46Speaker 2: and she was saying that for so many years she
- 48:48Speaker 2: got dragged around that she got dragged around the world
- 48:51Speaker 2: to watch him perform, and now he's watching her for
- 48:53Speaker 2: form and I'm like, oh, that's so cool. And he's
- 48:55Speaker 2: got like the team Astray shirt on. It's great.
- 48:58Speaker 3: It's not a turtleneck though. No, it's disappointed.
- 49:03Speaker 1: So because we are now also video you can watch
- 49:05Speaker 1: this on Apple or on YouTube, I think we should
- 49:07Speaker 1: do a little wiggles. Oh go now I'm stripped out
- 49:12Speaker 1: that it's Gemma.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Or let's let me let me just google it.
- 49:15Speaker 1: We'll keep doing this while you while you google ITAKA.
- 49:21Speaker 1: One thing I do I'm a little bit upset about
- 49:23Speaker 1: with this Commonwealth Games though, is that they've stolen an
- 49:27Speaker 1: event that they know we would be world champions in
- 49:30Speaker 1: if they've made it a competitive event. Mop man, They've
- 49:33Speaker 1: got the man at the needy ye Patrick is inspiring
- 49:37Speaker 1: people world over all.
- 49:39Speaker 2: What we got well, Okay, her name is Georgia Monroe.
