Ep. 150: Tough Assed Questions, Vol. 3 · The MeatEater Podcast

• 0:08
Speaker 1: This is a me eater podcast coming at you shirtless,
• 0:12
Speaker 1: severely bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: You can't predict anything. Whatever state you guys are from.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: Are you from the west or east side of the state? West?
• 0:43
Speaker 1: West side? Where I'm from, like where I grew up?
• 0:46
Speaker 1: The state you were born? And I don't even care
• 0:47
Speaker 1: what it is east the east and you were born
• 0:51
Speaker 1: no kind of you're right dead nuts. No, we're not
• 0:54
Speaker 1: not even kind of. So you think you're West Michigan.
• 0:56
Speaker 1: Southwest Michigan. Yeah, that's what we call it. I'm not
• 0:59
Speaker 1: tew talking about. I'm not talking about I'm not talking
• 1:02
Speaker 1: about latitude. Sure, but when someone says where is Countazoo Michigan,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: I say Southwest Michigan. I don't know about that. Oh
• 1:12
Speaker 1: my god, get a map out. Oh I know where
• 1:15
Speaker 1: it is. I just don't know if it has the
• 1:17
Speaker 1: West Michigan sensibility. The reason I bringing this up is
• 1:20
Speaker 1: because now we talked about how you guys didn't grow
• 1:25
Speaker 1: up flipping off your buddies as a way to say hi. No, okay,
• 1:29
Speaker 1: because hear me out. Have you ever met anybody else's
• 1:32
Speaker 1: said check out, check this out? What brought up the
• 1:35
Speaker 1: conversation about the Michigan hello, which is the middle finger
• 1:39
Speaker 1: is we're talking about the Some guy was saying, man,
• 1:43
Speaker 1: you should like it's bad to say mugs. And this
• 1:45
Speaker 1: guy had to be Australian because we just use mugs
• 1:49
Speaker 1: like hey friend, you know friend. Oh, Um, it's more
• 1:54
Speaker 1: like hey friend. Oh where it's like friend with a
• 1:56
Speaker 1: little little chab in there. Um you say, oh, it's
• 1:59
Speaker 1: horrible thing to say. And so we're looking up like
• 2:01
Speaker 1: what mugs means in different places. I think it means
• 2:03
Speaker 1: something kind of awful in Australia. And in this discussion,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: one guy wrote in to say that man, I would
• 2:10
Speaker 1: never take any advice from people in Australia and Australia
• 2:14
Speaker 1: they call their their Michigan hello or they're mugs. Is
• 2:18
Speaker 1: to call everybody the Queen Mother of all swear words,
• 2:21
Speaker 1: the sea word. That's right. One day my little boy
• 2:25
Speaker 1: made a list of all the naughty words he knew.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: He's public school kid, made a list on a board
• 2:33
Speaker 1: on a plank out in the garage with a sharpie,
• 2:36
Speaker 1: a list of all the naughty words you knew. And
• 2:38
Speaker 1: I said, you know what, you almost got them off,
• 2:40
Speaker 1: but there's one I will never tell you. I'm dying
• 2:42
Speaker 1: to know what it is. He even knows what letter
• 2:44
Speaker 1: it starts with, but I will I will never divulge.
• 2:47
Speaker 1: They use that word as a salutation. So this other
• 2:51
Speaker 1: guy was saying, Plus, you know, he brought up like
• 2:53
Speaker 1: swearing allegiance to the crown. He brought up all kinds
• 2:56
Speaker 1: of reasons why he wouldn't take advice from an Australian
• 2:59
Speaker 1: about how to speak to people. But and talking about
• 3:01
Speaker 1: the middle finger. It turns out that we get a
• 3:03
Speaker 1: letter from a guy who cleared like just without any
• 3:07
Speaker 1: prompt and clarified that he's from western Wisconsin. And then
• 3:10
Speaker 1: we got a guy who wrote in about the middle finger,
• 3:12
Speaker 1: and he clarified these from Western Wyoming. So I was
• 3:17
Speaker 1: wondering if in every state there's this weird phenomena where
• 3:22
Speaker 1: in every phenomenon where in every state people that live
• 3:25
Speaker 1: in the west half of that state flip people flip
• 3:29
Speaker 1: their friends off as a way to say hi. This
• 3:31
Speaker 1: guy in western Wisconsin that was so prevalent. He said
• 3:34
Speaker 1: that if his buddy didn't flip him off when he's
• 3:36
Speaker 1: driving by, he thinks something was wrong. It was pretty
• 3:40
Speaker 1: prevalent the guy must be mad at him. Yeah, Western Washington.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: I mean maybe it was just my jackass friends, but
• 3:47
Speaker 1: I feel like that was completely ubiquitous. Yeah. Another thing
• 3:52
Speaker 1: about the bird. The guy from Western Wyoming said, we
• 3:55
Speaker 1: really differentiated between putting your thumb out or not, and
• 4:00
Speaker 1: like you might put your thumb out and give the
• 4:02
Speaker 1: bird to your body and it was kind of like
• 4:05
Speaker 1: the exclamation point on it. Yeah, it was like it
• 4:08
Speaker 1: meant something different. He said, It's like the old man bird,
• 4:11
Speaker 1: which had your thumb in. He was saying he got
• 4:14
Speaker 1: in the habit of doing it so much that one
• 4:16
Speaker 1: day he flipped this old man off and it's ma
• 4:18
Speaker 1: whooped him. So she wasn't she was from the eastern
• 4:22
Speaker 1: part of her state. I didn't realize. Uh. Guy rode
• 4:27
Speaker 1: in this is this is kind of like it's kind
• 4:29
Speaker 1: of a moot point now. But a dude wrote in
• 4:32
Speaker 1: being like man Um he's talking about Secretary Zinkie leaving,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: leaving his position, and he's saying, oh, you know, you
• 4:43
Speaker 1: never got it right, and you handled Zinky with kids gloves.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: I don't want to dwell on this. I'm just gonna say, dude,
• 4:49
Speaker 1: wait and see his replacement. And then come tell me
• 4:53
Speaker 1: that I handled zinky with kids gloves. You'll be looking
• 4:57
Speaker 1: back at the good old days real soon. Perhaps, Um
• 5:03
Speaker 1: guy rode in to say that this year, no then
• 5:09
Speaker 1: in Mississippi, remember talking about you don't even talking a
• 5:11
Speaker 1: lot about whether people can actually like tell how old
• 5:14
Speaker 1: bucks are mm hmm and letting bucks walk and all
• 5:18
Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. When we're talking with Mark Kenyon,
• 5:20
Speaker 1: he wrote in that, Um, we're talking about like it
• 5:23
Speaker 1: like growing up in Michigan, like no one ever shot
• 5:27
Speaker 1: everybody always just shot spikes and four keys every buck.
• 5:31
Speaker 1: What are you saying, like in Mississippi, it's he says,
• 5:33
  Speaker 1: it's a different He's been a different situation down there.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: This is the old day that this is two fifteen
• 5:40
Speaker 1: in Mississippi. Seventy four percent of the bucks killed in
• 5:43
Speaker 1: Mississippi were aged. Was like, that's not you guessing they
• 5:48
Speaker 1: were aged at three and a half years and older.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: Four per cent of the bucks for you numb schools.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: Three quarters of the almost three quarters of the bucks
• 6:01
Speaker 1: in Mississippi three and it are like borderline like mature
• 6:05
Speaker 1: bucks three and a half and older. Dude, man, that's
• 6:10
Speaker 1: like a way different than a lot of places. Changing
• 6:14
Speaker 1: all the time. Well we think it's way different, But
• 6:17
Speaker 1: do we have that kind of data from other places?
• 6:20
Speaker 1: I would love to go find it. I would love
• 6:22
Speaker 1: to go find Like when I was a youngster, I
• 6:24
Speaker 1: would love to go find here did I shoot? When
• 6:27
Speaker 1: did I shoot my first buck? Like back in the
• 6:32
Speaker 1: mid eighties, right, I would love to know when I
• 6:36
Speaker 1: was just like a teen, like a young teenager entering
• 6:39
Speaker 1: into my teens. I would love to know. And in
• 6:43
Speaker 1: those in that collection of counties or statewide in general,
• 6:47
Speaker 1: I would say there was seventy I was the opposite.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: I would say it was seventy five. And this is
• 6:51
Speaker 1: just me pulling this out of the out of thin air.
• 6:54
  Speaker 1: But a bet se, we're one and a half. We're
• 6:59
Speaker 1: just spike some you know, fok spikes a little six is.
• 7:02
Speaker 1: We thought a big buck was just a year and
• 7:04
Speaker 1: a half old. It had a bigger because they'll throw
• 7:06
Speaker 1: an eight point rack, you know, they'll throw in Michigan eight.
• 7:09
Speaker 1: So we cut that was a big buck. But maybe
• 7:12
Speaker 1: you were being full to then maybe there was basket
• 7:15
Speaker 1: racks sixes and eight that were actually three and a
• 7:17
Speaker 1: half years old. Genetics run into playing those. Yeah, No,
• 7:23
Speaker 1: I don't think so, But how can I really defend
• 7:25
Speaker 1: my position because I don't have any the materials out there.
• 7:28
Speaker 1: I was just looking at a sweet collection of maps
• 7:31
Speaker 1: that are Dude sent in. That was um it was
• 7:36
Speaker 1: going back into the niesties forties and showing what parts
• 7:40
Speaker 1: of the state of Michigan were opened and closed for
• 7:43
Speaker 1: deer hunting. Mm hmm. And there was big periods of time,
• 7:48
Speaker 1: like you know, when all the animals got wiped out,
• 7:51
Speaker 1: this big periods of time would we'd only be like
• 7:52
Speaker 1: a little block of the state open, like they'd have
• 7:55
Speaker 1: a deer season. The entire southern third of the state
• 7:59
Speaker 1: would be closed to your hunting, and it would just,
• 8:02
Speaker 1: you know, every year they'd be like it just bounced
• 8:04
Speaker 1: around as they were trying to recover. Dear, you look
• 8:07
Speaker 1: at something very similar in your own lifetime if you
• 8:09
Speaker 1: went and looked at turkey. Yeah, how turkey seasons filled
• 8:14
Speaker 1: in as turkeys were recovered. Uh. Guy roning about this,
• 8:20
  Speaker 1: You guys ever hear this that there's a I don't
• 8:24
Speaker 1: know if this is true. He says, there's a cover
• 8:26
Speaker 1: scent that basically functions like vix vapor rub. When you
• 8:29
Speaker 1: were a little kid, with you my rub vix vapor
• 8:31
Speaker 1: vapor rub on your chest. Yeah, so you'd get like
• 8:34
Speaker 1: it's like waffed up. He says, there's a cover cent
• 8:37
Speaker 1: that's like mental and it's just meant to throw off
• 8:40
  Speaker 1: a deer's ability to know what's going on. Man, I've
• 8:43
Speaker 1: heard of stuff like that, and I just don't really
• 8:45
Speaker 1: end up giving much credence to pretty much anything. The
• 8:49
Speaker 1: deer roles and he's like, whoa, bro, I can't spell anything.
• 8:52
Speaker 1: It's just it's just like swamping their senses. I mean,
• 8:56
Speaker 1: maybe there's something that you haven't heard of this. I've
• 8:59
Speaker 1: heard of all sorts of stuff like that, and I
• 9:00
Speaker 1: don't think I really even register most Most of it
• 9:03
Speaker 1: is that the stuff that's supposed to smell like cookies
• 9:04
Speaker 1: or whatever. No, he said it smells like men. Though
• 9:07
Speaker 1: he's asking me or us right what we think of it.
• 9:10
Speaker 1: I don't even know enough about it. I wish Mark
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Kenny was here, yea one. You know, if you're listening
• 9:15
Speaker 1: right now, send your question to Wired to Hunt. Dude,
• 9:20
Speaker 1: you'll get thirty minutes on like you'll get thirty minutes
• 9:23
Speaker 1: because you'll know about it. I guarantee, I guarantee Kenyon
• 9:26
Speaker 1: to like know about it and have some kind of
• 9:27
Speaker 1: opinion on it. Um. In the ongoing listing and collecting
• 9:34
Speaker 1: of Ship that makes Turkey's Gobble, guy rode in. He
• 9:39
Speaker 1: was out hunting one time, got all six, started puking,
• 9:42
Speaker 1: rolled into dry heaves, and gobbled up a bird dry
• 9:44
Speaker 1: heaving out in the woods. His buddy called. He says,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: his buddy called it and killed it. A train engineer
• 9:50
Speaker 1: says that he can get him to he can get
• 9:51
Speaker 1: him to shot gobble with his train whistle. Says, but
• 9:54
Speaker 1: it's so damn loud you can't hear the birds. But
• 9:56
Speaker 1: he'll see him out in the field, blow the whistle
• 9:58
Speaker 1: and see him stick their neck out and gobble even
• 10:00
Speaker 1: he's up his train engine so dry heaves and train whistles,
• 10:06
Speaker 1: yannice his heart. Here's a good yeah, he gets. I
• 10:08
Speaker 1: only forward you. It's like a very small percentage of
• 10:11
Speaker 1: people concerned about his heart. You're getting good tips off that. Well.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: You know, there was so many after my recent clarification,
• 10:18
Speaker 1: which I felt like I did a good job of saying,
• 10:22
Speaker 1: I'm feeling good, folks, But people care about you. I
• 10:25
Speaker 1: know they do. But we got quite a few emails
• 10:27
Speaker 1: being like, oh, man, I know exactly what's wrong with you.
• 10:30
Speaker 1: You better call me or this, that and the other enough.
• 10:33
Speaker 1: So I felt like I might have somehow miscommunicated and
• 10:37
Speaker 1: not giving off the uh, you know, the appearance that
• 10:40
Speaker 1: I'm fine and like I'm doing good. I feel comfortable
• 10:43
Speaker 1: with the situation and so yeah. One of the guys
• 10:47
Speaker 1: that rote in was like, dude, you gotta call me.
• 10:49
Speaker 1: So I did, so I chatted up. I got like
• 10:54
Speaker 1: a you know, like a what do you call when
• 10:57
Speaker 1: you go back? Like a like a check up, um
• 11:00
Speaker 1: follow up from a guy, a doctor out of Great Falls.
• 11:03
Speaker 1: Was it a doctor that called you? Yeah? Oh so
• 11:07
Speaker 1: a doctor said call me yeah, yeah, and doctors because
• 11:11
Speaker 1: I emailed doctors every week where I got a question
• 11:13
Speaker 1: no for sure And it was good because I basically
• 11:16
Speaker 1: ran through everything and he's like, sounds like you're right
• 11:19
Speaker 1: on track, You're you're you know, you've done all the
• 11:22
Speaker 1: tests that I would have recommended, and you you understand
• 11:25
Speaker 1: what's going on. I'm glad that you're on the ask
• 11:28
Speaker 1: for in a day. And knowingly I would say is
• 11:31
Speaker 1: that don't wait until you're sixty five to go see
• 11:33
Speaker 1: your cardiologist again. Maybe check in just a little more often. Oh,
• 11:37
Speaker 1: it's nice to have a second opinion. Totally, dude, you
• 11:39
Speaker 1: need to have doctors in your pocket. Man, I'd like
• 11:43
Speaker 1: to have a doctor in each back pocket at all time,
• 11:45
Speaker 1: because because the first of your day, guy wrote in,
• 11:47
Speaker 1: and you know, I don't know about like I hope
• 11:51
Speaker 1: he's not listen. No, it's fine, he wrote in, and
• 11:53
Speaker 1: he's like, his buddy has to go down some kind
• 11:58
Speaker 1: of emergency and get an m R I. And the
• 12:01
  Speaker 1: m R I machine is backed up, okay, so he's
• 12:04
Speaker 1: gotta wait. And some doctors like, hey, long as you're waiting,
• 12:07
Speaker 1: let's do the x ray first to see if there's
• 12:11
Speaker 1: any metals to verify. There's no metals, like they'll because
• 12:15
Speaker 1: you know, the MRIs are magnets that will draw the metals.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: So if you got implants and stuff, they have steel.
• 12:22
Speaker 1: But but and he says that, thank goodness, thank god
• 12:27
Speaker 1: he did the x ray because his body had inadvertently
• 12:33
Speaker 1: swallowed a piece of shot there was residing in his stomach,
• 12:38
Speaker 1: and that that m R I would have drawn shot. Now, yeah,
• 12:44
Speaker 1: for sure, that's I verified that with my doctor friend
• 12:47
  Speaker 1: d D. The doctor I should call D right now.
• 12:51
Speaker 1: So I wrote back and said well, because he said
• 12:55
Speaker 1: it's from eating turkeys. And I'm like, but you were
• 12:58
Speaker 1: using steel shot for turkey. Sure you weren't using like
• 13:01
Speaker 1: copperplated lead, her brass plated lead. They have both, because
• 13:10
Speaker 1: the magnet wouldn't draw unlead then, and then I emailed
• 13:15
Speaker 1: my doctor body d dr D to ask her the
• 13:20
  Speaker 1: m r I wouldn't pull like it has to be
• 13:23
Speaker 1: something with iron in it for the magnets to pull it.
• 13:25
Speaker 1: And she's like, yeah, and that's why it's standard procedure
• 13:28
Speaker 1: to always check people with X rays to make sure
• 13:30
Speaker 1: they don't have any metal. And then the dude rolled
• 13:32
Speaker 1: back and said, yeah, in fact, it was steel. They
• 13:36
Speaker 1: were hunting turks with steel shot. So be pretty interesting
• 13:40
Speaker 1: to have that bea be drawn out of your body?
• 13:43
Speaker 1: Would it would? Now the thing that would worry me? Interesting? Huh?
• 13:47
Speaker 1: I would like it just for the story if it
• 13:50
Speaker 1: got drawn straight out. But let's say it got sucked
• 13:53
Speaker 1: by a magnet. Let's say they put the magnet on
• 13:56
Speaker 1: top of your head, pulled through your body and drew
• 13:59
Speaker 1: it that way. Man, that's not interesting, you know, But
• 14:02
Speaker 1: just a straight shot, just like bounce across every vertebra
• 14:05
Speaker 1: as it runs up your spine and then right through
• 14:08
Speaker 1: your cranium. I don't know how strong the magnet, sorry,
• 14:13
Speaker 1: but I felt that you were just hoping for like
• 14:15
Speaker 1: maybe liver, no man, hope to shut off when you
• 14:19
Speaker 1: started screaming. I don't know how fast it draws that
• 14:23
Speaker 1: thing in. I need to call. The point being, it's
• 14:26
Speaker 1: nice to have doctors you can call up and ask
• 14:27
Speaker 1: good questions to know. Here's another example of that. Uh,
• 14:31
Speaker 1: Steve and I guided a ortopedic surgeon in Colorado. This
• 14:36
Speaker 1: accompanied right, we're doing a fundraiser, that's right, So we
• 14:43
Speaker 1: weren't being paid for this, but yeah, we hunted with him,
• 14:47
Speaker 1: and Uh, I was always wondering what the actual name
• 14:53
Speaker 1: for what I call referred to the pelvit crest on
• 14:56
Speaker 1: a deer, which is like when you kind of break
• 14:59
Speaker 1: open it's back legs and he sliced away to meat,
• 15:01
Speaker 1: and you've got what looks to me very much like
• 15:04
Speaker 1: a crest like piece of bone each side of it. Yeah,
• 15:07
Speaker 1: you pull it out. And just because I was I
• 15:10
Speaker 1: don't know, I was writing something about that doing that process,
• 15:13
Speaker 1: I thought, well, I might not be calling it the
• 15:16
Speaker 1: right thing, So figured bone guy surgeon. Yeah, he didn't
• 15:21
Speaker 1: know off the top of his head, but he did
• 15:22
Speaker 1: a little bit of digging and quickly found out that
• 15:24
Speaker 1: it is called the symphysial crest r Yeah, so I
• 15:29
Speaker 1: was right with crest. It's just not Yeah, so it
• 15:33
Speaker 1: is in the pelvic area. So you know, the butt
• 15:35
Speaker 1: crack is called Oh technically, no, I don't the gluteal crease.
• 15:41
Speaker 1: I like that, that makes sense. I like that a
• 15:42
Speaker 1: lot um. It just sounds so less personal than your
• 15:46
Speaker 1: butt crack, right, you guys ought to introduced sales real quick,
• 15:49
Speaker 1: by the way, Yeah, and what you do here? Sam Longer,
• 15:53
Speaker 1: an associate editor Meat Eater, and Morgan Mason, same associate
• 15:57
Speaker 1: editor over here, stuff guys, real quick, while you're on it,
• 16:02
Speaker 1: Are you at liberty to talk about what's happening over
• 16:05
Speaker 1: your place tonight? Or no, it'll be long gone by then. Yeah,
• 16:11
Speaker 1: what do you worry that, like my party is gonna
• 16:13
Speaker 1: be crashed? You might not like to talk about stuff
• 16:15
Speaker 1: that's happening at your house. Oh yeah, I hear you.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: I've been thinking about that lately too, About how much
• 16:20
Speaker 1: you know, being that you know, we're outing the public
• 16:24
Speaker 1: eye more and more and more, how much of that
• 16:26
Speaker 1: stuff you keep private, but no, I'd love to talk
• 16:28
Speaker 1: about it. It's ah, would you like me to? Sure? Well, man,
• 16:35
  Speaker 1: I wouldn't have brought it up. We're doing a little
• 16:38
Speaker 1: winter Solstice festivy festival festivities, um, which is gonna involve
• 16:47
Speaker 1: pagan rituals. Yeah, yeah, he's, he's they celebrate pag and stuff.
• 16:52
Speaker 1: But really, I say, the biggest reason we're actually doing this,
• 16:55
Speaker 1: and then my wife's interested in doing it, is that
• 16:59
Speaker 1: is that the tradition of it. So we've done it
• 17:02
Speaker 1: three or four years now, and like whoever's with us
• 17:05
Speaker 1: over the holidays, we sort of it's not always on
• 17:07
Speaker 1: the winter solstice, but even if we're we might do
• 17:10
Speaker 1: this New Year's sometimes because you're kind of celebrating New
• 17:13
Speaker 1: Year's ish type stuff right in the ending of one
• 17:16
Speaker 1: year at the beginning of another. Whether you want to
• 17:18
Speaker 1: do that on the winter solstice when the days started
• 17:20
Speaker 1: becoming longer more logical, Yeah, for sure. The Gregorian is
• 17:24
Speaker 1: how you say that, the Gregorian calendar. It's more logical,
• 17:27
Speaker 1: don't know, because that's just some arbitrary like like New
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Year should be right now exactly. Yeah, either last night
• 17:34
Speaker 1: or tonight. Yeah, it's kind of nice to think about
• 17:38
Speaker 1: that and then when you realize that that, like tomorrow,
• 17:39
Speaker 1: the day is going to be a little bit longer.
• 17:41
Speaker 1: I spent like ten minutes. I spent ten minutes explaining
• 17:44
Speaker 1: this to my kids. But theird thinking is They're like,
• 17:48
Speaker 1: they wanted to be real dramatic, you gotta move. I
• 17:52
Speaker 1: was like, no, it'll be like you know, like every day,
• 17:55
Speaker 1: it'll be like sub a minute, right, And they thought
• 17:58
Speaker 1: from it. I had their hopes up where they thought,
• 18:00
Speaker 1: all of a sudden, mos gonna be like hotter and
• 18:02
Speaker 1: balls light out. Tm Oh yeah, that's funny. But and
• 18:10
Speaker 1: you guys in the old days of Lavians, correct me
• 18:13
Speaker 1: if I'm wrong here, and the old days of Latvians
• 18:16
Speaker 1: and get a hunk up molten lead and fired into
• 18:18
Speaker 1: a bucket of water. Yeah, and we were thinking about
• 18:20
Speaker 1: doing that too. And I think we've just we just
• 18:23
Speaker 1: sort of ran out of time. Um, I'm still I'm
• 18:26
Speaker 1: still contemplating going and going buy and grabbing some fishing
• 18:29
Speaker 1: bunch of fishing weights. Um, bring a little we smelt
• 18:33
Speaker 1: lead with blowtorches, getting in and huff that it's good
• 18:35
Speaker 1: for your brain. Yeah, totally, you guys. Um, you guys
• 18:38
Speaker 1: tracking what we're saying about about throwing lead into a bucket,
• 18:41
Speaker 1: I am not. You know, in some cultures you take
• 18:43
Speaker 1: a chicken and kill the chicken and lay it's guts out.
• 18:44
Speaker 1: Watch all the guts squirmed, and you can tell the
• 18:46
Speaker 1: future heard of it. Well, Lavian's um. They like, take
• 18:51
Speaker 1: a hunk molten lead and throw into a bucket. Then
• 18:53
Speaker 1: you pull it out of the bucket and you get
• 18:55
Speaker 1: a candle going, and you throw a shadow of your
• 18:57
Speaker 1: lead shape because it makes the fild shape. You throw
• 19:01
Speaker 1: a shadow that off the wall, off a candle. Take
• 19:04
Speaker 1: a gander up there, and then see what's gonna happen. Yeah,
• 19:06
Speaker 1: everybody else like we're gonna get eaten by large monster. Yeah, everybody.
• 19:12
Speaker 1: It's like seven years and younger. It's usually that. And
• 19:16
Speaker 1: there's always a lot of boats for some reason, Like
• 19:19
Speaker 1: a chunk of melted lettuce has recently been you know,
• 19:23
Speaker 1: reformed into into a solid shape that it the or
• 19:28
Speaker 1: the shadow that it throws is some sort of boat
• 19:31
Speaker 1: like thing because everybody's going on a cruise next year,
• 19:34
Speaker 1: or just be like something. If you predicted for me,
• 19:36
Speaker 1: if I throw my lead and I throw a shadow
• 19:39
Speaker 1: up on the wall, and I look yonder and you
• 19:41
Speaker 1: and I see a boat, and someone said, man, I
• 19:44
Speaker 1: think over the course of the next year, you'll be
• 19:46
Speaker 1: in a boat. I'd be like, I think you're probably right.
• 19:50
  Speaker 1: I got a feeling you're right. I went to a
• 19:53
Speaker 1: summer Solstice party at an environmental historians home. He's been
• 19:58
Speaker 1: a guest on this show, Dan Flores, and he had
• 20:02
Speaker 1: the big you don't really have a spot for this.
• 20:06
Speaker 1: He had a sun dial on a rock. Okay, so
• 20:12
Speaker 1: he could, you know, track shadows throughout the year. Is
• 20:14
Speaker 1: pretty cool. And then right at the appropriate time, everyone
• 20:21
Speaker 1: would uh. At the time that he would call, he
• 20:25
Speaker 1: would say that this party was a collection of elite
• 20:28
Speaker 1: He said it was an elite group of hard players,
• 20:32
Speaker 1: meaning an elite group of hard parties, and everybody be
• 20:35
Speaker 1: pretty partied up, and at the appropriate time you would
• 20:39
Speaker 1: all dance like like the sun. The shadow of the
• 20:43
Speaker 1: sun dial throws in a certain directions, so as the
• 20:45
Speaker 1: summer goes on, days get longer, longer, longer, and you
• 20:48
Speaker 1: would dance in a reverse direction of the course that
• 20:52
Speaker 1: the shadow was taking. And everyone, you know, all liquored
• 20:56
Speaker 1: up and everything, and you're all dancing and hooting up, hooping,
• 20:58
Speaker 1: you know, whooping and holler and round the dial for
• 21:01
Speaker 1: quite a long time, and it was like you're collectively
• 21:06
Speaker 1: harnessing your energies in order to send the sun back
• 21:10
Speaker 1: in the direction, reverse the time, send it back. Yeah,
• 21:15
Speaker 1: that's an interesting state of mind. Some results his party.
• 21:19
Speaker 1: Oh you know, it wasn't like he was. I don't
• 21:21
Speaker 1: think people thought that they were like literally reversing the
• 21:24
Speaker 1: course of the sun. But it was a celebration of
• 21:26
Speaker 1: it was it was like it is actually going on
• 21:28
Speaker 1: right there, saying that, like that there's gonna be less
• 21:30
Speaker 1: sun now, and we're sort of going to help that along. Yeah,
• 21:33
Speaker 1: like it's getting too yeah, too much, too much. You
• 21:37
Speaker 1: need to throttle her back a little bit, and so
• 21:38
Speaker 1: you'd send the sun back down. And it was a
• 21:40
Speaker 1: way of anchoring. I think it's just like a nice
• 21:43
Speaker 1: way of anchoring your calendar. Mm hmm, yeah, I like it. Yeah,
• 21:49
Speaker 1: we tonight. Oh you know, there's talking about your heart.
• 21:52
Speaker 1: I was supposed to bring up and go go ahead,
• 21:53
Speaker 1: but I don't want to get so far away from
• 21:55
Speaker 1: your heart that I lose my point. But go ahead
• 21:59
Speaker 1: throwing lead. So we're not gonna throw a lead what
• 22:03
Speaker 1: they call it. We're going to how do you saying
• 22:06
Speaker 1: lab throwing lead or whatever the term would be. I
• 22:11
Speaker 1: think it is. I think it's mess mess good job
• 22:20
Speaker 1: that your pop have the deal where he's like doing
• 22:21
Speaker 1: the signs on the body, like ended up with the
• 22:24
Speaker 1: caribou hun like blessing the rifle. You know that's just
• 22:28
Speaker 1: for kids, you know, Okay, But no, messed spheno. I
• 22:32
  Speaker 1: think it's what it's called. I think it's to throw
• 22:33
Speaker 1: a lad messed sphenopen is I thought would be more
• 22:36
Speaker 1: like yeah, like most other latining words kind of sounds
• 22:41
Speaker 1: like that. So what's the process with the lead? You
• 22:43
Speaker 1: boil it down on something and just like have no
• 22:45
Speaker 1: so you just like have like a pot. You got
• 22:47
Speaker 1: a good will that you're not going to use beside
• 22:51
Speaker 1: this and and throwing uh good will. Yeah, you guys
• 22:57
Speaker 1: keep the crucibles and a Bunsen burner. Um. Yeah, you
• 23:04
Speaker 1: just melt it down and then when it's in a
• 23:06
Speaker 1: liquid form, you just take it and hold it right
• 23:08
Speaker 1: over the bucket of cold water. And one one felt, Yeah,
• 23:11
Speaker 1: the keys to do it fast and all at once,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: because if you drip it in there, you can imagine
• 23:15
Speaker 1: what you get. That makes sense. You're gonna see boat
• 23:18
Speaker 1: shapes like with all that weight coming down, like how
• 23:20
Speaker 1: the water reacts. But I think people see the water
• 23:22
Speaker 1: and it puts them in the boating frame of mind
• 23:24
Speaker 1: to perhaps. Uh, my old man had all the paraphernalia
• 23:29
Speaker 1: for dealing with lead. Kid was sweet little What is
• 23:33
Speaker 1: that material? It's like cast when it's not like picture
• 23:36
Speaker 1: like it looks. I can't think of the word, but
• 23:39
Speaker 1: it's a you know, like the super heavy cast iron
• 23:46
Speaker 1: things with a little spout on them. Yeah, and you
• 23:49
Speaker 1: get like the little tippers and everything, and we go down.
• 23:52
Speaker 1: We had that, We had the we had the molds
• 23:55
Speaker 1: to make your own fishing sinkers. But we'd go down
• 23:58
Speaker 1: and get all of our lead out of the at
• 24:00
Speaker 1: the rifle range down the road. We had a rifle
• 24:02
Speaker 1: range about a mile and a half. We could ride
• 24:04
Speaker 1: our bikes down a role that we dubbed dead dog
• 24:07
Speaker 1: Road because the strangest thing for a long period of
• 24:11
Speaker 1: growing up, you'd look in the ditch off that road
• 24:14
Speaker 1: and would often be able to find dead dogs, like
• 24:18
Speaker 1: we could never solve the mystery, or magazines of a
• 24:21
Speaker 1: certain genre would be like what you'd find in this ditch.
• 24:25
Speaker 1: So we call it like our road to end, and
• 24:27
Speaker 1: the Dead Dog Road to begin, and down Dead Dog
• 24:29
Speaker 1: already go left into the shooting range, and we would
• 24:32
Speaker 1: without doing any kind of things like putting flags up
• 24:34
Speaker 1: and whatnot to notify people that we were down there,
• 24:36
Speaker 1: we would go down with the sand the sifter and
• 24:40
Speaker 1: sift out bullet lead and use that to pour up
• 24:45
Speaker 1: our own sinkers and our sinker mold. But bullet lead
• 24:48
Speaker 1: there's additives in there. So like normally when you bite
• 24:51
Speaker 1: a fishing sinker, um, it's soft. But when you bite
• 24:56
Speaker 1: our sinkers, you would hear your teeth go every time
• 25:02
Speaker 1: because it was all those hardeners in there. Man. It
• 25:04
Speaker 1: was a nasty fishing, rough fad fishing experiment. Man. Yeah,
• 25:07
Speaker 1: it was horrible sinkers, horrible stinkers. But we never thought
• 25:11
Speaker 1: to go get tire weights, which most people who want
• 25:14
Speaker 1: to melt some lead up. That's what we always used,
• 25:16
Speaker 1: my dad, and soft lead buzz bombs and stuff like that.
• 25:19
  Speaker 1: Tire weights. Yeah, what's a buzz bomb. It's a it's
• 25:23
Speaker 1: a long kind of diamond shaped casting lure for salmon
• 25:26
Speaker 1: that you can just huck a country mile off the beach.
• 25:30
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Because you guys were like Pacific coast. Yeah, yes,
• 25:34
Speaker 1: we did a lot. You were throwing them for casting
• 25:36
Speaker 1: for salmon, mostly pinks and silvers, but you'd run into
• 25:38
Speaker 1: King's time to time. Yeah, oh man along along the
• 25:43
Speaker 1: west coast of Woody Island where I grew up, when
• 25:45
Speaker 1: the pink salmon run was on, Like you, you could
• 25:47
Speaker 1: go out to certain places and see a thousand people
• 25:50
Speaker 1: stretching for a couple of miles down the beach. Just
• 25:54
Speaker 1: when you threw a bird down the beach, they knew
• 25:55
Speaker 1: you were just saying high. One time, when I was
• 25:58
Speaker 1: doing that, I drilled seagull out of the air with
• 26:01
Speaker 1: a buzz bomb when there was you know, five hundred
• 26:05
Speaker 1: people withinside of me, and they all thought I did
• 26:06
Speaker 1: it on purpose, when the worst thing was like I
• 26:08
Speaker 1: was kind of like seagull coming Biden thinking of and
• 26:13
Speaker 1: you know a million chances did you do it on purpose?
• 26:15
Speaker 1: There's no way you don't bet you a thousand bucks, right,
• 26:18
Speaker 1: there's no way you're But speaking of flipping the birds,
• 26:21
Speaker 1: there are some people who thought that was pretty uh,
• 26:23
Speaker 1: pretty bad idea of me to do, and we thought
• 26:26
Speaker 1: you did it on purpose. But I did it on purpose.
• 26:28
Speaker 1: I had to fight that thing all the way in,
• 26:30
Speaker 1: pin it down, unhook it. It was pretty unpleasant with
• 26:32
Speaker 1: that you hooked. Yeah, you got you tied into him. Yeah,
• 26:36
Speaker 1: if you're calling drag oh yeah. Yeah. It was up
• 26:39
Speaker 1: in the air and then down the water and squawking.
• 26:42
Speaker 1: It's not horrible without an audience, but it probably becomes
• 26:46
Speaker 1: horrible with an audience. Yeah, but worse about it. Well,
• 26:49
Speaker 1: I've I've found throughout the course of my life that
• 26:51
Speaker 1: catching ship on fishing gear that isn't fish is generally unpleasant. Yeah, turtles,
• 26:57
Speaker 1: no one. Yeah, it's never any fun. Never. Yeah, we
• 26:59
Speaker 1: doubt what the Pelican wants. I still need to get
• 27:03
Speaker 1: back to why I brought up your heart. Yeah, we
• 27:07
Speaker 1: got off of what we're gonna be doing tonight because
• 27:11
Speaker 1: I just explained the Yeah, winter sols. I'm coming up
• 27:14
Speaker 1: with my boys. My daughter can't come. Oh, you guys
• 27:17
Speaker 1: are coming. That's good to know. I don't think you
• 27:19
Speaker 1: invited me. I think you invited my wife. I invite
• 27:21
Speaker 1: your whole family, but you guys did rs VP. Really,
• 27:24
Speaker 1: I'm glad we know now I'm coming up with two boys.
• 27:27
Speaker 1: All right, we're ready for you. But what we're gonna do,
• 27:29
Speaker 1: Just so everybody knows what Steve will be doing and
• 27:31
Speaker 1: what he was doing on the evening of the twenty one.
• 27:33
Speaker 1: We're gonna have a bonfire, throwing chicken guts, throwing leads,
• 27:36
Speaker 1: No chicken guts on fire. We're gonna drag a youlgue
• 27:41
Speaker 1: around the house. We're gonna sing some songs. Which how
• 27:44
Speaker 1: do you guys feel about that? My wife thinks that
• 27:47
Speaker 1: Americans in general are very uncomfortable with singing songs in public.
• 27:51
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I hate it. Increasingly used to be way
• 27:56
Speaker 1: more common, seems like, yeah, like I was just reading
• 27:58
Speaker 1: in the paper some article the day, like Christmas caroling
• 28:02
Speaker 1: is like this thing that used to be it's like kids, Yeah,
• 28:06
Speaker 1: Mrs Babcock would organize it. Yeah, it's sure you kind
• 28:09
Speaker 1: of hated it, But I think as you do it more,
• 28:11
Speaker 1: you kind of like realize, you know, the benefits of it.
• 28:14
Speaker 1: And I don't know, I feel like singing makes you
• 28:16
Speaker 1: feel good when you do it, And it's just interesting
• 28:19
Speaker 1: that Americans really don't like doing it because I always
• 28:22
Speaker 1: sing my song. Yeah, I've sing that all the time. Yeah,
• 28:28
Speaker 1: we sing a lot on Hunt. But no, like when
• 28:31
Speaker 1: my kids have a birthday and there's people over and
• 28:33
Speaker 1: it comes down to sing the birthday song, and there
• 28:34
Speaker 1: was stoked to sing the birthday song. Yeah, that's not
• 28:38
Speaker 1: the kind of singing I'm talking about. I know what
• 28:40
Speaker 1: you mean, though, it seems like it used to be
• 28:42
Speaker 1: a lot more common now. So we're gonna standing around
• 28:45
Speaker 1: the bonfire saying a few songs, sing some songs while
• 28:47
Speaker 1: we're pulling the yolog around and then the real well
• 28:50
Speaker 1: that's part of the tradition and the whole winter song.
• 28:54
Speaker 1: We're gonna like, you need a team of my oxen
• 28:56
Speaker 1: or what No, you know it'll be. You just had
• 28:58
Speaker 1: your house redone. You're dragging large do it around it,
• 29:02
Speaker 1: around it, you do it three times, you know, to
• 29:04
Speaker 1: basically bless the house and you know, get rid of
• 29:07
Speaker 1: evil spirits and get it ready for the next year.
• 29:09
Speaker 1: A lot of people on that hill, I know, there's
• 29:11
Speaker 1: a we have a we have a corner man. When
• 29:13
Speaker 1: there's not a lot of space where rope, you put
• 29:17
Speaker 1: up a rope people can hold onto. Yeah, little carabineers
• 29:20
Speaker 1: they can clip into every time they come. When that's done,
• 29:22
Speaker 1: you go to the bonfire, and then we have an
• 29:25
Speaker 1: axe and you can either you know, to everybody there
• 29:29
Speaker 1: express in words what you're chopping into the log or
• 29:33
Speaker 1: you can just keep it in your own head. But
• 29:34
Speaker 1: the gist of it is is that you're chopping like
• 29:38
Speaker 1: the shitty things from the prior year, the demons, the dragons, battles,
• 29:43
Speaker 1: the hurdles, negative stuff, whatever, and you're you're chopping it
• 29:47
Speaker 1: into the log, out of your body, into the law.
• 29:51
Speaker 1: And then I don't buy that. And then you pick
• 29:54
Speaker 1: up the law goes into the fire. I feel like
• 29:57
Speaker 1: every guy with a woodstove does that every time each shops.
• 30:00
Speaker 1: He's like, some exactly, how is it that you're chopping
• 30:06
Speaker 1: it into it? I feel like what it should be.
• 30:09
Speaker 1: It's symbolic. I think it should be, did you knock
• 30:13
Speaker 1: a chunk out of the log? The log is your
• 30:17
Speaker 1: you're everything. You come in at a forty five, come
• 30:21
Speaker 1: in at a reverse forty five, knock out a little
• 30:24
Speaker 1: chip that's the right fill that in the fire, Well,
• 30:28
Speaker 1: those chips will be lying there. So if that's how
• 30:30
Speaker 1: you want to do it, you can throw a little
• 30:32
Speaker 1: chip in there for sure. Pretty subjective, subjective on the
• 30:35
Speaker 1: approach on this, like you just have your angle, know
• 30:37
Speaker 1: what you want to do. Yeah, totally, I'm sure there's
• 30:40
Speaker 1: some you know, crazy little traditional pagan labby and it'll say, no,
• 30:44
Speaker 1: we're doing it all wrong. But I need to get
• 30:46
Speaker 1: back to you why I brought up your heart. But yeah,
• 30:49
Speaker 1: real quick, you guys would paint those buzz bombs? Huh?
• 30:52
Speaker 1: How would you paint them? Usually bubblegum, pink? What kind
• 30:57
Speaker 1: of paint? I mean, just like rustoleum. I get all
• 31:03
Speaker 1: mail paffer and stuff. Like. I remember, I was into
• 31:05
Speaker 1: powder coating stuff for a while. I can't remember if
• 31:07
Speaker 1: I was doing that for my steel head jigs or
• 31:10
  Speaker 1: buzz bombs. I I don't. I don't honestly remember. But
• 31:13
Speaker 1: like hard enamel stuff because you'd be banging it on
• 31:16
Speaker 1: rocks and all sorts of stuff. I paint my own
• 31:18
Speaker 1: hell but jigs, and that's always a let down, man. Yeah. Yeah,
• 31:21
Speaker 1: it chips off so damn fastalbet it stays good, yeah,
• 31:24
Speaker 1: because then you're you're trying to put glow in the
• 31:26
Speaker 1: dark on their right A lot of times if you're
• 31:29
Speaker 1: just jigging hell but it's good. But as soon as
• 31:30
Speaker 1: you start banging rocks for heal, thet are typically over
• 31:33
Speaker 1: a sandy bottom. As soon as you're like banging rocks
• 31:36
Speaker 1: for lincod Or banging rocks for rock fish. Then you
• 31:38
Speaker 1: pulled up, it's like all that hard work he's got
• 31:40
Speaker 1: like a lead jig again. Yeah, but I also kind
• 31:43
Speaker 1: of like ones that are a little battle scarred. I've
• 31:45
Speaker 1: always I always thought that it needs like a little
• 31:48
Speaker 1: bit of seasoning before something's fishing well, especially with jigs,
• 31:51
Speaker 1: like once it once there's a little bit of chip,
• 31:53
Speaker 1: maybe it makes it, give it a little bit more
• 31:55
  Speaker 1: of a realistic pattern or something. I don't know. I
• 31:58
Speaker 1: haven't noticed that. I that's in your head, but once
• 32:02
Speaker 1: in people's head is important. Man, Yeah, I think so.
• 32:04
Speaker 1: I used to hate talking with people about hunting gear
• 32:06
Speaker 1: and fishing gear and then they'd like something stupid, and man,
• 32:11
Speaker 1: I think that's stupid and they'd say, well it works
• 32:13
Speaker 1: for me. And I used to not like it, but
• 32:16
Speaker 1: now I understand it and like it. Yeah, I talk
• 32:19
Speaker 1: I talk to people about that all the time, that
• 32:22
Speaker 1: what you're fishing is less about having it right, you know,
• 32:27
Speaker 1: from objective standards, and more what you're confident in. That's
• 32:31
Speaker 1: what That's what I say all the time. With steel head,
• 32:34
Speaker 1: it's like pick up, no, don't pick like the fly
• 32:36
Speaker 1: of that you know, some professional things. You should pick.
• 32:39
Speaker 1: Pick the one that you're confident in, the one that
• 32:41
Speaker 1: you're going to feel like you're fishing well all day,
• 32:45
Speaker 1: feel that like is working for you and and and
• 32:49
Speaker 1: have that sense of find that sense of confidence, and
• 32:52
Speaker 1: that's what's gonna catch you fish, not trying to rely
• 32:54
Speaker 1: on somebody else's expertise. Yeah, like this year, man, because
• 32:59
Speaker 1: this year I try to hold a new kind of
• 33:01
Speaker 1: flutter jig for jig and halibut. And we traditionally always
• 33:05
Speaker 1: us just like classic leadheads, but I mean they're sixteen
• 33:08
Speaker 1: ounce leadheads, right, like just big leadhead with a big
• 33:14
Speaker 1: j hook coming out of it, and on that you
• 33:16
Speaker 1: put you know, like the classic just like you're rigging
• 33:18
Speaker 1: up for small mouth bath, but everything's like way bigger
• 33:20
Speaker 1: than you get, like a ten inch grub body on it,
• 33:22
Speaker 1: not tenants six eight inch grub body on it. And
• 33:25
Speaker 1: that switched to a flutter jig. And at first you're
• 33:29
Speaker 1: fishing it and you're not fishing like you are when
• 33:33
Speaker 1: you're fishing something you love. But then I want to
• 33:36
Speaker 1: on day one, late and late on day one of
• 33:39
Speaker 1: halibut fishing, smack two very nice halibut. Then you should
• 33:44
Speaker 1: see me fishing that jig, then you're playing for keeps. Man,
• 33:47
Speaker 1: I'm sitting up there just jigging jigg It's not like
• 33:50
Speaker 1: you know you're in it because you're like, oh this
• 33:53
Speaker 1: thing works, then you're fishing seriously. So it's self fulfilling, right,
• 33:57
Speaker 1: It definitely is. It takes a while. It takes a
• 33:59
Speaker 1: while to develop that with new patterns, techniques, all sorts
• 34:02
Speaker 1: of stuff and some there's a lot of things that
• 34:05
Speaker 1: I've just never gotten past it. It's like I never
• 34:07
Speaker 1: figured out how to fish. This never worked for me.
• 34:09
Speaker 1: I've got dride boxes full of flies and and lures
• 34:12
Speaker 1: that I tried one time. I was like, I'm not
• 34:15
Speaker 1: really feeling it. Never really stuck it out long enough
• 34:17
Speaker 1: to make it work, because sometimes it's just default to
• 34:20
Speaker 1: those things. But then sometimes like that, just like, oh ship,
• 34:24
Speaker 1: that's me. That's me. With any kind of surface bait, yeah,
• 34:29
Speaker 1: I just like and I was like, man, service baits,
• 34:34
Speaker 1: Oh there I have a This last spring, I took
• 34:36
Speaker 1: my dad to Wisconsin on a muskie trip and a
• 34:39
Speaker 1: friend had told us to get this this new fancy
• 34:42
Speaker 1: surface bait called the whopper plopper, and I was like, well,
• 34:45
Speaker 1: that's the dumbest name I've ever heard of. And then
• 34:47
Speaker 1: I saw it and I was like, well, that's the
• 34:48
Speaker 1: dumbest looking lure I've ever seen. And it's it's like
• 34:52
Speaker 1: it's like aizarre spook kind of like a like a
• 34:54
Speaker 1: just like a cigar bait. No lip, no nothing, but
• 34:57
Speaker 1: the back end has like a little fin and it
• 34:59
Speaker 1: goes but spinning around and must swimming. Yeah, exactly, real noisy,
• 35:07
Speaker 1: there is like throwing water everywhere, but the wounded ones
• 35:11
  Speaker 1: are so I just I just couldn't. I just couldn't
• 35:14
Speaker 1: handle it. But he went and bought five of them,
• 35:16
Speaker 1: of course, and and then first day he landed like
• 35:19
Speaker 1: it's just from a loan from the bank to buy
• 35:22
Speaker 1: five musky plug Yeah, seriously, he got a he got
• 35:26
Speaker 1: a huge smiley on it the first day, and then
• 35:28
Speaker 1: a big muskie on it the second day. And then
• 35:30
Speaker 1: after he caught that his first muskie on this bait
• 35:34
Speaker 1: that I didn't think was gonna work, he busted out
• 35:37
Speaker 1: another lure that I had even less confidence in, called
• 35:40
Speaker 1: the suicide Duckling literally looks like a rubber duckling. These
• 35:44
Speaker 1: guys should get a job naming hot sauce. Yeah, absolutely,
• 35:47
Speaker 1: this literally looks like a duckling. It's it's it's fairly fishy.
• 35:51
Speaker 1: It's like head down, looks like a duckling running the way,
• 35:53
Speaker 1: which definitely does make a lot of commotion. It's got
• 35:55
Speaker 1: propellers for the feet and it's got treble hooks sticking
• 35:59
Speaker 1: up all over the play And I was like, you
• 36:01
Speaker 1: gotta be kidding me. He's like, I bought this. I
• 36:03
Speaker 1: bought this lure. I think it's awesome. I want to
• 36:05
Speaker 1: fish it. And he just loves hair brained ideas for
• 36:07
Speaker 1: different stuff. He fished that thing for ten minutes and
• 36:10
Speaker 1: landed a forty in musky right at the side of
• 36:12
Speaker 1: the boat. Guy can pick lures or he just fishes
• 36:16
Speaker 1: him with comedy. Yeah, I know folks that swear by
• 36:20
Speaker 1: those two. Definitely both both of those things. Man. I
• 36:24
Speaker 1: am completely. I'm completely. Until last summer, Yanni and I
• 36:29
Speaker 1: didn't know. Maybe you did, I don't think you did.
• 36:33
Speaker 1: We didn't know that muskies were also in fashion again.
• 36:36
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, that there's like fish and Game Agency's
• 36:40
Speaker 1: established him. Well, yeah, because like my grandpa was a
• 36:43
Speaker 1: musky fish and my mom that was my mom's my
• 36:46
Speaker 1: mom's father, maternal grandpa. Uh he liked to fish cropping
• 36:51
Speaker 1: like the fish muski. But he was fishing musky and
• 36:53
Speaker 1: native water right go up in the north Wisconsin and
• 36:57
Speaker 1: stuff and fish musky, um, and that was like his thing.
• 37:01
Speaker 1: But I didn't know that they're making all these like
• 37:03
Speaker 1: super breeds and muskies and cutting muskies loose and all
• 37:06
Speaker 1: these lakes, so they weren't traditionally been and always like
• 37:10
Speaker 1: sterile hybrid eized muskies that just get bigger and bigger
• 37:14
Speaker 1: and bigger and never reproduced. And it's like a big
• 37:17
Speaker 1: practices when they're trying to get rid of a car
• 37:19
Speaker 1: per suckers or putting hybridized yeahs, sterile musky exactly because
• 37:24
Speaker 1: they'll they'll create a cool fishery. They get really big,
• 37:27
Speaker 1: but you know they're not gonna breed. They're not gonna like,
• 37:29
Speaker 1: you know, eat themselves out of house and home like
• 37:32
Speaker 1: pike or actual muskies. Were people are tigers all over Montana.
• 37:37
Speaker 1: People get real fired up about catching them. Yeah, definitely.
• 37:41
Speaker 1: When I was a little kid, we did we fished
• 37:42
Speaker 1: this lake for bluegills called Wolverine Lake, pretty heavy and um,
• 37:46
Speaker 1: they had tiger muskies in there, but they were all dinkers.
• 37:48
Speaker 1: When I was a kid, you so much. Moments they
• 37:49
Speaker 1: were gonna Sunday be hogs. You just catch dinker tigers.
• 37:53
Speaker 1: The reason I brought your heart up, guy wrote in
• 37:57
Speaker 1: which is a doctor here? He was talking about your
• 38:00
Speaker 1: an email about your heart. He pointed out that he
• 38:02
Speaker 1: had to take beta blockers. He says that the medication
• 38:09
Speaker 1: has had an interesting and unintended side effect which has
• 38:12
Speaker 1: made him immune debuck fever. Oh, he gets excited about
• 38:18
Speaker 1: seeing dear, but he never gets that feeling like his
• 38:20
Speaker 1: heart is brought ready to jump out of his chest.
• 38:23
Speaker 1: He's got that calm, steady hand because he's taken medications
• 38:26
Speaker 1: specifically meant to prevent tachycardia. Tachycardia. That's right, man, You're
• 38:31
Speaker 1: gonna get a lot of listeners jumping on the beta blockers.
• 38:33
Speaker 1: And he says, I'm no super hunter by any means.
• 38:35
Speaker 1: When this buck in the picture below came into view
• 38:37
Speaker 1: in October, how as cool as could be? Yeah, no,
• 38:42
Speaker 1: I can see that. But quite a few doctors have
• 38:46
Speaker 1: told me and all agreed that beta blockers. Also, the
• 38:50
Speaker 1: young people don't like them because they slow you down
• 38:53
Speaker 1: so much. He's you have there's a look like taking him.
• 38:57
Speaker 1: You just have a constant lethargy. Oh slow you down
• 39:00
Speaker 1: a net way? Yeah, I don't know. Like they take
• 39:03
Speaker 1: the hot the peaks and valleys, they take the peaks
• 39:05
Speaker 1: out of life physically slow you don't. Yeah. So if
• 39:08
Speaker 1: you're if you're hiking a hill, you know, you probably
• 39:11
Speaker 1: had to just because you're heart it's not responding to
• 39:14
Speaker 1: what your body's asking of it, so you had to
• 39:16
Speaker 1: stop more often, you know. Yeah, so you're feeling what
• 39:21
Speaker 1: this guy is saying. No, No, I've yeah, no, I've
• 39:25
Speaker 1: had the beta blocker chat, you know, with anybody I've
• 39:28
Speaker 1: talked to about about taking it. So if you're really
• 39:31
Speaker 1: symptomatic and it's bothering you, and a lot of people
• 39:34
Speaker 1: like that, Like I had an anxiety from having those
• 39:38
Speaker 1: you know, the symptoms, But once I was told that
• 39:40
Speaker 1: there's nothing to worry about, I was able to just
• 39:43
Speaker 1: put it out of my head and when it happens
• 39:45
Speaker 1: now I'm like, Okay, it's fine, and I go back
• 39:47
Speaker 1: to sleep or just go on with my thing. A
• 39:50
Speaker 1: lot of people can't do that. In the anxiety just
• 39:52
Speaker 1: builds and builds and builds, and so they're gonna take
• 39:56
Speaker 1: beta blockers to deal with it. If it was happening
• 40:01
Speaker 1: to me twice a day, I'd probably taking beta blockers
• 40:04
Speaker 1: because he just gets sick of it. Yeah, then just
• 40:07
Speaker 1: get into some kind of hunting where you don't need
• 40:08
Speaker 1: to do a whole lot of walking, but you need
• 40:12
Speaker 1: to do a whole lot of keeping calm. Sounds like, yeah,
• 40:16
Speaker 1: started living in a tree stand. Um guy rolled in talk.
• 40:21
Speaker 1: We remember talking about shooting squirrels, shooting squirrel nats when
• 40:23
Speaker 1: you're a little kid, to try to rustle him out
• 40:25
Speaker 1: or like to try to get him. I like how
• 40:27
Speaker 1: when we were squirrel hunting the other day, your boy
• 40:30
Speaker 1: was like, He's like, I just want to make sure,
• 40:33
Speaker 1: but we can't shoot the squirrel nests right there. Yeah,
• 40:37
Speaker 1: he like anyone independently. It's nice when someone like independently
• 40:41
Speaker 1: discover something that definitely occurred to him. Why not just
• 40:45
Speaker 1: go ripping a couple of rounds up and each and
• 40:47
Speaker 1: every one of these nests and then time out there
• 40:49
Speaker 1: and have a look. We'll clive up there and see
• 40:51
Speaker 1: what we got. Uh. This guy was saying in something,
• 40:54
Speaker 1: there's states that explicitly state I haven't looked us up.
• 40:59
Speaker 1: He said. The states that explicitly state you cannot shoot
• 41:02
Speaker 1: into a squirrel nest makes sense. Um, he's talking about
• 41:06
Speaker 1: he did it once when he was a kid, and
• 41:11
Speaker 1: I don't know how. You don't know the squirrel flopped
• 41:13
Speaker 1: out or he climbed up and got it out, but
• 41:15
Speaker 1: he took it home to his grandma. His grandma was
• 41:17
Speaker 1: pissed and she was yelling at him. She cooked the
• 41:20
Speaker 1: squirrel still, but she was yelling at him, and she said,
• 41:23
Speaker 1: that's like someone shooting you in your home. Which I
• 41:27
Speaker 1: don't want someone shooting me no matter where I'm at. Yeah,
• 41:30
Speaker 1: so if they're out on the branch or, is like
• 41:32
Speaker 1: somebody shooting into your yard. And that's all right. Yeah,
• 41:35
Speaker 1: it's like, oh it's chilling. Man. I was outside when
• 41:37
Speaker 1: I got she was asking for it. Um, one last
• 41:40
Speaker 1: thing before we getting some before we're getting some things
• 41:43
Speaker 1: that are more questions and nature. But a guy was
• 41:46
Speaker 1: saying he's got this idea he's come to think of.
• 41:50
Speaker 1: You know, with people, right, you have like you have
• 41:54
Speaker 1: like high class and you know you have class. There's
• 41:57
Speaker 1: a class structure in America, right, It's like blue everybody
• 41:59
Speaker 1: talks about blue collar. UM, affluent. He views deer. He
• 42:04
Speaker 1: thinks that deer he thinks that the deer to live
• 42:06
Speaker 1: on public land or blue collar deer, because I gotta
• 42:09
Speaker 1: put up with all the bullshit man like getting shot at.
• 42:15
Speaker 1: Just yeah, and he said, then there's like the high
• 42:18
Speaker 1: class deer that lived down the private land. Nothing bad
• 42:20
Speaker 1: that what happens to him. I don't know, feeding man
• 42:26
Speaker 1: feeding all manner times through the day. So so is
• 42:30
Speaker 1: it white colored people who are hunting white color deer
• 42:33
Speaker 1: and blue color? He says he's worked this theory up.
• 42:38
Speaker 1: He's running by a few people. Everyone doesn't like it.
• 42:40
Speaker 1: His wife thinks it's stupid if he says, he's still
• 42:44
Speaker 1: trying to work on it. But the basic outline of
• 42:47
Speaker 1: it is there's blue collar deer and they stuck on
• 42:50
Speaker 1: public lane as some merit some merit. I think it's
• 42:59
  Speaker 1: born's a warrants mentioned. Yeah, all right, here's one. It's
• 43:05
Speaker 1: not on the big list. I let you guys all
• 43:07
Speaker 1: look at this is a surprise question to you, but
• 43:09
Speaker 1: I think it would be pretty easy. A friend of mine,
• 43:13
Speaker 1: Patrick wrote in, and they they he's al all, he's
• 43:17
Speaker 1: already sent me an email to tell me what happened here,
• 43:21
Speaker 1: and uh so we have with the follow up already
• 43:24
Speaker 1: but at the time when he wrote this, his cousin
• 43:28
Speaker 1: ran into a situation that he had no real knowledge.
• 43:31
Speaker 1: I was wondering if we could weigh him. His cousin
• 43:33
Speaker 1: killed a large dough and they had cold temperatures, so
• 43:38
Speaker 1: he decided just to hang it with a hide on
• 43:40
Speaker 1: and leave it um, probably at home. He didn't say where,
• 43:49
Speaker 1: but he says he hung it and then he got
• 43:51
Speaker 1: to his place to butcher. And so after picking it up,
• 43:55
Speaker 1: and he realized that the face of the deer had
• 43:57
Speaker 1: been slightly chewed on. And I saw the picture and
• 43:59
Speaker 1: it looked like pretty much half of the muzzle had
• 44:02
Speaker 1: been chewed off. So he's got to hang him by
• 44:04
Speaker 1: the hocks. Yeah, he's got to hang him by the gambrel. Okay,
• 44:07
Speaker 1: his cousin thought it was a raccoon. Maybe a possum.
• 44:11
Speaker 1: Could have been a dog kyo, could have been all
• 44:13
Speaker 1: kinds of creators. Really, That's why I'd like to know
• 44:15
Speaker 1: where this is, because if it's in his garage and
• 44:18
Speaker 1: his dogs in the garage, I got it narrowed down.
• 44:24
Speaker 1: It wasn't your ma. It sounds like it was out
• 44:27
Speaker 1: in the woods. And then he brought it back. Now
• 44:29
Speaker 1: as cousin felt that he couldn't eat it because of this,
• 44:33
Speaker 1: because he's dead deer had rabies, because there was a risk,
• 44:37
Speaker 1: possible risk feeding it to his family, and at the
• 44:40
Speaker 1: time he was gonna play on his burying everything and
• 44:43
Speaker 1: returning it back to the earth. He's got a deer,
• 44:49
Speaker 1: got it out, deer hanging, and something choos on his muzzle,
• 44:52
Speaker 1: and he's gonna bury the deer, even even if the
• 44:54
Speaker 1: thing that chewed on his muzzle had y vampire. Yeah. Yeah,
• 45:00
  Speaker 1: the deer's blood isn't circulating. I mean, unless you're planning
• 45:03
Speaker 1: on doing like head cheese with that deer, which like
• 45:05
Speaker 1: most people don't do like there there's absolutely no reason
• 45:09
Speaker 1: that it got chewed on by a rabid animal. Rabies
• 45:16
Speaker 1: is mostly eradicated. The dude looking to get rid of this,
• 45:19
Speaker 1: the dude looking to get rid of a deer. Yeah,
• 45:21
Speaker 1: certainly there is that possibility, but I think you guys
• 45:24
Speaker 1: should to us, it seems like so well, of course,
• 45:27
Speaker 1: but I think to a new hunter you could see
• 45:30
Speaker 1: that and definitely be turned off and wondered like okay,
• 45:34
Speaker 1: which yes, yeah, yeah, because I had a coyote eat
• 45:39
Speaker 1: on a or probably could have been a pack coyotes
• 45:42
Speaker 1: eat on a cow elk one time that was left
• 45:44
Speaker 1: in the woods a little bit too long, and I
• 45:46
Speaker 1: came up to it and was like, I wasn't worried
• 45:48
Speaker 1: about like I was gonna contract something, but I was
• 45:51
Speaker 1: definitely like, what do I do here? How much? How
• 45:55
Speaker 1: much I'm factoring in? I'm putting like heavy emphasis on
• 46:00
Speaker 1: the fact that it's it's it's his muzzle. Yeah for sure.
• 46:05
Speaker 1: Now if he said eight all like eight half of
• 46:08
Speaker 1: each bag ham, I would trim. I would definitely trim
• 46:13
Speaker 1: around that. Yeah. Yeah, that's a different situation. Okay, Yeah,
• 46:19
  Speaker 1: I don't think it's a sidest point. Yeah. So Patrick
• 46:24
Speaker 1: Patrick had a chat with him and they they who's
• 46:28
Speaker 1: Patrick buddy mine? Yeah, he's given us some of this
• 46:33
Speaker 1: is from within your social circle. That's why you're being
• 46:35
Speaker 1: so oh no, no, no, he's a he's like an
• 46:37
Speaker 1: acquaintance through meat eater. Um. But they came up with
• 46:43
Speaker 1: the solution to can the whole thing, and then by
• 46:46
Speaker 1: pressure cooking it, everybody everybody felt comfortable that there was nothing.
• 46:51
Speaker 1: So yeah, so you're saying every time up you're like, well, boys,
• 46:55
Speaker 1: this bes rabid, but but I can't. It was it.
• 47:05
Speaker 1: What's what's pressure cooking gonna do different than any other
• 47:08
Speaker 1: kind of cooking? Isn't Listen, it's all in the guy's head, right.
• 47:11
Speaker 1: But he didn't waste the animal. It didn't have to
• 47:14
Speaker 1: go back to the earth. Oh no, God bless him.
• 47:16
  Speaker 1: I think he's deer real. I think I think I'm
• 47:23
Speaker 1: I'm happy with the outcome. Okay about you guys, don't
• 47:26
Speaker 1: feel like I wasted your time. No, it's a great question.
• 47:29
Speaker 1: It's a great question. And we get a lot of
• 47:32
Speaker 1: questions with people in situations that I feel are less obvious,
• 47:37
Speaker 1: such as having it's typically coyotes, having coyotes eating hunks
• 47:48
Speaker 1: of your stuff, and then people off and wheed like,
• 47:51
Speaker 1: well what do you do? That? Told the story about
• 47:53
Speaker 1: my brother that had a bear getting messes, situation all up,
• 47:57
Speaker 1: that buried all that mean, buried a bunch of the parts.
• 47:59
Speaker 1: He walked aroun digging it all back up, took down
• 48:02
Speaker 1: to create, gave it a bath, and went home and
• 48:03
Speaker 1: ate it. Yeah, nothing wrong with it, that dude. He anything,
• 48:09
  Speaker 1: And it wasn't a rabid grizzly bear. I don't know
• 48:12
Speaker 1: if he had he never got a test it. But yeah,
• 48:15
Speaker 1: I mean I don't think it crossed his mind. This
• 48:18
Speaker 1: is a guy that takes a little bits of trim
• 48:20
Speaker 1: and puts it in a TopWare container and puts it
• 48:22
Speaker 1: in his microwave for his dog, but it ends up
• 48:24
Speaker 1: putting salt down and eating himself. One for you, one
• 48:28
Speaker 1: for me. Oh yeah, I told you right that he was.
• 48:35
Speaker 1: When we were in the tent that's falling together, he
• 48:38
Speaker 1: was telling me that he felt feels like tender meat
• 48:42
Speaker 1: and tender food is a fad that is going to
• 48:44
Speaker 1: go away. Yeah, well, there are cultures that would agree
• 48:46
Speaker 1: with them, are there. Yeah, don't you remember the chupic
• 48:51
Speaker 1: mm hmm, the chupic eskimo. They were saying that the
• 48:53
Speaker 1: parts they liked are the chewy parts. They talked about
• 48:57
Speaker 1: meat being too tender. Of the caribou, Yeah, they like
• 49:01
Speaker 1: the you know what, like every animal, all the ungulates
• 49:04
Speaker 1: have it, but it's really exaggerated on like moose and
• 49:07
Speaker 1: stuff that. Like there's if you picture something spine like,
• 49:11
  Speaker 1: let's let's picture something that's got a real obvious humph
• 49:15
Speaker 1: Like take like a moose, right, and when you got
• 49:18
Speaker 1: the spine and you got the blades that come up
• 49:19
Speaker 1: off the spine, those are called the thoracic processes. When
• 49:24
Speaker 1: you got like an animal like that and you go
• 49:26
Speaker 1: to the highest thorascic process, like on on a buffalo.
• 49:29
Speaker 1: Those things be twenty inches long, you know, moose got
• 49:34
Speaker 1: a big thorastic process. And then off that there's that cable.
• 49:38
Speaker 1: It looks like a yellow cable. Giant tendon that runs
• 49:44
Speaker 1: from that's fixed into those things, runs along the top
• 49:47
Speaker 1: of the neck and basically holds that head up. They're
• 49:51
Speaker 1: talking about, like and to eat that thing. You remember this,
• 49:54
Speaker 1: Sometimes I feel like you're not paying attention to stuff
• 49:58
Speaker 1: that vainly remember having to converse station about enjoying the
• 50:01
Speaker 1: tougher cuts with those boys. Yeah, like Callahan's throat roast
• 50:05
Speaker 1: and stuff. Yeah, which to chew cuts, um, And there
• 50:08
Speaker 1: are a lot of people who like prefer those chewy
• 50:11
Speaker 1: wh who liked that chewy cut. So I think Matt
• 50:13
Speaker 1: could beyond to something, or Matt could have been born
• 50:15
Speaker 1: to the wrong culture. Matt's wife was explaining to me
• 50:19
Speaker 1: how Matt is. He's in his tent. He's in his
• 50:24
Speaker 1: teepy tent with his stove going. He's got like a
• 50:28
Speaker 1: collapsible seek stove and he's in there cleaning up a skull,
• 50:34
Speaker 1: elk skool, just not doing a snowstorm, and all the
• 50:39
Speaker 1: little scrapings that he's cutting off. He just lays it
• 50:41
Speaker 1: flat onto the stove, like no pan, no oil, and
• 50:46
Speaker 1: just lays lays the trunks of meat out onto the
• 50:49
Speaker 1: that's a good idea stove. And then just as he works,
• 50:52
Speaker 1: that's what he has for a snack. You want to
• 50:54
Speaker 1: talk about some tough bits, man, right, Yeah, that's so
• 50:59
Speaker 1: he likes us a lot. He likes a chewy bit.
• 51:01
Speaker 1: I feel that yellow cable has gotta be the chewiest
• 51:03
Speaker 1: thing ever. I wonder if that's something that they're just
• 51:06
Speaker 1: like kind of chewing on the past the time they're
• 51:10
Speaker 1: talking about like and they cook some chewy meat, if
• 51:12
Speaker 1: you remember, because they kind of like boil. They boil,
• 51:17
Speaker 1: but not for long, just boil meat. Yeah, remember that, remember,
• 51:25
Speaker 1: not being real impressed they're like flash boiled meat. Well,
• 51:28
Speaker 1: because they they like to chew. They like to chew,
• 51:31
Speaker 1: they like the cut. Here's a good one. Have you
• 51:34
Speaker 1: noticed the difference in the taste of a fall black
• 51:36
Speaker 1: bearon out of a spring bear? Yes, yeah, a big difference, man.
• 51:41
Speaker 1: And then again it depends on we're gonna rule because
• 51:45
Speaker 1: everything gets squirrely. No, let's keep it open to the
• 51:49
Speaker 1: let's keep it open to nuance. Here if it has
• 51:55
Speaker 1: the access to marine resources, meaning if it's a bear
• 52:00
Speaker 1: eats on salmon and you know, dead seals, it finds
• 52:02
Speaker 1: washed up on the beach and whatnot. Uh, I feel
• 52:06
Speaker 1: that they're better in the spring, especially fall bears that
• 52:10
Speaker 1: are on salmon are There are many, many exceptions. I'm
• 52:14
Speaker 1: gonna people are gonna write it and be like it
• 52:15
Speaker 1: does not true, but they are perceived. Black bears feeding
• 52:20
Speaker 1: on salmon are perceived as being borderline inedible. And in
• 52:24
Speaker 1: those marine areas, when bears in the spring are feeding
• 52:28
Speaker 1: real heavily on vegetation, um, beach dry, you know, various
• 52:36
Speaker 1: things they find and even little crabs and stuff from
• 52:39
Speaker 1: unt of the rocks, they're regarded as being much more
• 52:42
Speaker 1: palatable and better than fall bears. I think that that
• 52:46
Speaker 1: becomes reversed for other reasons when you're talking about bears
• 52:50
Speaker 1: that are not have access to marine resources such as
• 52:53
Speaker 1: salmon runs. Because in the fall, thre eating a lot
• 52:56
Speaker 1: of masks, thre eating a lot of berries, They're putting
• 53:00
Speaker 1: on a good layer of fat. They have very good
• 53:02
Speaker 1: fat for making large, and I think they're better than
• 53:05
  Speaker 1: to fall, but I don't I would suggest that doesn't
• 53:08
Speaker 1: vary as much with interior bears, not as much variation,
• 53:13
  Speaker 1: because I mean I've eaten I've eaten a number of
• 53:15
Speaker 1: different spring black bears from Montana that were just fabulous,
• 53:19
Speaker 1: couldn't anything. Yeah, there's no off taste in meat, but
• 53:21
Speaker 1: you don't have They're not like his robust and fatty, right,
• 53:25
Speaker 1: and bear fat is good, yeah, but they'll still carry
• 53:27
Speaker 1: a pretty healthy layer of fat sometimes in the spring.
• 53:30
Speaker 1: You see them good and fatty in the spring. So
• 53:33
Speaker 1: I can't think of ever like getting one. You could
• 53:35
Speaker 1: actually render large off in the spring, but the spring
• 53:37
Speaker 1: is a big window too, right. I remember I got
• 53:40
Speaker 1: one on April seventeen, which is early. You can hunt
• 53:43
Speaker 1: him to mid June. In Montana, there's some units and
• 53:46
Speaker 1: then guys up Canada are hunting them into June. By
• 53:48
Speaker 1: that time he's had two months to eat, so you
• 53:50
Speaker 1: can be packing on some weight. Another guy road In says,
• 53:53
Speaker 1: does bear lard go bad? Yeah, large goes bad? Now
• 53:57
Speaker 1: large by definition that you've rendered it right, So you
• 54:00
Speaker 1: gotten the impurities out and you got the water out
• 54:02
Speaker 1: but I wound up just as a test when I
• 54:07
Speaker 1: the animal that I wrote American that kind of like
• 54:11
Speaker 1: the animal I wrote American Buffalo about my book. I
• 54:14
Speaker 1: rendered a bunch of um. He had a real orangey
• 54:18
Speaker 1: fat on them, because they like you know, process the
• 54:22
Speaker 1: caroteen and things and they get like a nice orange,
• 54:24
Speaker 1: yellowy fat in late summer. It's my understanding of how
• 54:28
Speaker 1: that works. And I rendered a bunch of it out
• 54:31
Speaker 1: and made a bunch of basically beef are because that
• 54:34
Speaker 1: fat's good. Oh yeah, that that fat like beef fat,
• 54:38
Speaker 1: not like tallow It's not like venison. It's not like
• 54:40
Speaker 1: the waxy venison fat, which is which varies in it's
• 54:45
Speaker 1: which varies in quality throughout the country in the time
• 54:49
Speaker 1: of year, I believe. But their fat is good, like
• 54:52
Speaker 1: you can leave the fat on and grill it and
• 54:54
Speaker 1: it's good. And I have kind of the same color
• 54:55
Speaker 1: as like duck fat. Yep, oh you know, cool yellowy
• 54:59
Speaker 1: or that yellowy orange like kind of a not great
• 55:04
Speaker 1: looking like you imagine orange that has like a not
• 55:07
Speaker 1: super just yellow orange. Leave it at that. I rendered
• 55:11
Speaker 1: a bunch of it out because there's a lot of
• 55:13
Speaker 1: it on there. Um And I kept one. I liked
• 55:17
Speaker 1: having it so much that I didn't jar it and
• 55:19
Speaker 1: seal at pressure, seal it right now, just kept it
• 55:21
Speaker 1: in the jar. And I must have kept that stuff
• 55:24
Speaker 1: for seven I kept one little pint sized jar just
• 55:26
Speaker 1: for just because I like to have it in my fridge.
• 55:28
Speaker 1: I like looking at it. Um Over time, it was
• 55:32
Speaker 1: like this beautiful color in the beginning, and over time
• 55:35
Speaker 1: it just turned kind of gray, and eventually I thought
• 55:37
Speaker 1: it's some out and it had gone ransom. They had
• 55:40
Speaker 1: gone ransom. And if you leave, that's like one of
• 55:42
Speaker 1: the things like you if you leave. So he's talking
• 55:44
Speaker 1: about bear lard, which has been rendered, But if you
• 55:47
Speaker 1: leave fat on a bear in your freezer, it will
• 55:52
Speaker 1: it will go south on you in your freezer. You
• 55:55
Speaker 1: need to trim that stuff off when you freeze bear meat.
• 55:58
Speaker 1: But I don't know what it is about fat, but
• 56:00
Speaker 1: the salmon fat goes bad. And yeah, there's a lot
• 56:05
Speaker 1: of stuff that goes wrong with salmon in the freezer. Well,
• 56:07
Speaker 1: I think that fat in general, you just like most
• 56:10
Speaker 1: freezers aren't keeping it cold enough from preserving. Probably the
• 56:15
Speaker 1: only reason I know that kind of I feel like
• 56:18
Speaker 1: it would work with wild game fat when it does
• 56:20
Speaker 1: work with wild game. Is because an uncle of mine
• 56:24
Speaker 1: uh owns a place where they sell uh dipping dots
• 56:31
Speaker 1: ice cream, I believe is what it's called here about
• 56:33
Speaker 1: that all the time, I don't understand what. Yeah, I've
• 56:35
Speaker 1: never tried it myself either, but it's it's so high
• 56:39
Speaker 1: and fat. I guess that they had to put in
• 56:41
Speaker 1: when they became a purveyor of this product, they put
• 56:45
Speaker 1: in a freezer. That's the first time said purveyor on
• 56:48
Speaker 1: this show. I guarantee it. I like that that it's
• 56:54
Speaker 1: got to be kept at like minus thirty or something
• 56:57
Speaker 1: instead of just zero like a normal commercial freezer is
• 57:00
Speaker 1: or whatever. And he killed an elp and he's like, yeah, man,
• 57:03
Speaker 1: six years later, still eating on that thing, and I
• 57:05
Speaker 1: swear it was like every bit as good as it was,
• 57:08
Speaker 1: you know, six months after it because he had a
• 57:10
Speaker 1: high class freezer. Yeah, because he felt like it was
• 57:12
Speaker 1: keeping it so cold and his preserving it that much better. Yeah,
• 57:14
Speaker 1: those dipping dots are a weird consistency. I could see
• 57:16
Speaker 1: how you maybe have to do something different. He's just
• 57:19
Speaker 1: taken like a one roast per Christmas and that was it.
• 57:23
Speaker 1: Seriously through an elk in six months go ahead or anyone. Um. Yeah, Well,
• 57:29
Speaker 1: we all decided that this um was a good question,
• 57:33
Speaker 1: and this guy actually prepped his question with I'm hoping
• 57:36
Speaker 1: that it's the question of the century. Yeah. I don't
• 57:39
Speaker 1: need to hear that. I don't need to hear that,
• 57:42
Speaker 1: because Keith I can tell you that it's not. But
• 57:48
Speaker 1: I thought we're getting a laugh out of the way
• 57:50
Speaker 1: you're presenting it. So he he asks, Let's say you're
• 57:55
Speaker 1: on a budget and God comes down and holds a
• 57:58
Speaker 1: gun near your head. Okay, four forces you to choose
• 58:03
Speaker 1: between high end boots or high end glass, meaning optics.
• 58:10
Speaker 1: I've turned around grab that gun out of his hand
• 58:12
  Speaker 1: so fast. But let's just say, I don't think it's
• 58:17
  Speaker 1: you're saying. It's not what you're saying. God's not being
• 58:19
Speaker 1: fair with that question. No, I don't want to do
• 58:21
  Speaker 1: I don't want I don't want to black. I don't
• 58:22
Speaker 1: want to I don't want a blastpheme. But I'll say that, Um,
• 58:28
Speaker 1: I gotta know more. I gotta know what you're up
• 58:30
Speaker 1: to if you're a chucker hunter boots. Good point. Good point.
• 58:36
Speaker 1: Let's say a big game. Let's say Western big game
• 58:40
Speaker 1: optics for me, yeah, I feel like I think, like
• 58:45
Speaker 1: nice boots, but you can you can get it good.
• 58:47
Speaker 1: You can get a good pair of boots for less
• 58:51
Speaker 1: than you couldn't get it really, you know, expensive pair
• 58:54
Speaker 1: of boots. Yeah, you just keep wearing, you know, and uh,
• 59:01
Speaker 1: if you had to, you can hunt and bare feet
• 59:03
Speaker 1: and make some mocks sins. Yeah. And the thing is
• 59:06
Speaker 1: too if you get if you buy right on knocks,
• 59:11
Speaker 1: like if you buy like you buy a pair of
• 59:12
Speaker 1: Vortex knocks, you get great knocks. They're not gonna kill
• 59:16
Speaker 1: you on cost. And if your house burns down, they
• 59:21
Speaker 1: replace them as long as you got something to show
• 59:23
Speaker 1: for him. And I still got the lanyard. And even
• 59:26
Speaker 1: the most expensive boots I've ever had in my life,
• 59:28
Speaker 1: they still last me like a season and a half.
• 59:30
Speaker 1: You can't wear out boots and send them in. You
• 59:32
Speaker 1: can wear out knocks and send them in. You can
• 59:34
Speaker 1: with some companies. I sent in a sending a pair
• 59:38
Speaker 1: of last year, and they re rebuilt them for me
• 59:40
Speaker 1: for like thirty bucks. Rebuilt that's true on them. They
• 59:44
Speaker 1: didn't put a new soul on them for me. That
• 59:46
Speaker 1: was like another like hundred and twenty five or something.
• 59:49
Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, these will just be my pack
• 59:52
Speaker 1: boots and you can send in to get redone, and
• 59:57
Speaker 1: like like White's pack boots, you can send in to
• 59:59
Speaker 1: get redone. These are kind of tracks got you. Okay,
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: so you can't a little bit, but not the same way.
• 1:00:07
Speaker 1: You're not bringing them back. I'm still not giving it
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: the fact that it just really depends. But in general,
• 1:00:13
Speaker 1: let's say, okay, so my life, the way my life
• 1:00:16
Speaker 1: is like what I do, all the things I do. Man,
• 1:00:21
Speaker 1: it's really tough because it just really depends. I've said
• 1:00:24
  Speaker 1: a thousand times. I've just's got a gun to your
• 1:00:27
Speaker 1: head right now. Man, Well that's that's why it doesn't
• 1:00:29
Speaker 1: like equivocation. Let's go, let's go to last weekend squirrel hunt,
• 1:00:32
Speaker 1: pretty mellow walk about knocks, Right, you're still going to
• 1:00:38
Speaker 1: choose that could have been out there and flip flops.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 1: I wouldn't liked it a little bit, even kind of Morgan,
• 1:00:48
Speaker 1: you're you're with knocks too. Yep, I'm on the glass. Sorry, Keith,
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: good question, but not the best of the SENTI to
• 1:00:55
Speaker 1: be the question of the century. You're only gonna live,
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: like all of us in this room, we'll touch into
• 1:01:01
Speaker 1: our early eighties. And will die, So that would have
• 1:01:04
Speaker 1: to be you didn't even get a full century when
• 1:01:07
Speaker 1: it's all said and done. Generally, he's saying that he
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: would have had the so in all your entire life,
• 1:01:14
Speaker 1: that that would be the best question. Like you're on
• 1:01:16
Speaker 1: your dying bed, You're you're dying and like someone says,
• 1:01:22
Speaker 1: you know in all these years, man, like you know
• 1:01:24
Speaker 1: as you fade out of consciousness, Um, what was the
• 1:01:28
Speaker 1: what was the best question you've ever heard? Right? Really
• 1:01:31
Speaker 1: obscure hypothetical. I came up one time and emailed to
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: a podcast. It's kind of like the ever debatable question.
• 1:01:37
Speaker 1: People are expecting him to be like, what's the meaning
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: of it all? Or like this is really the end?
• 1:01:43
Speaker 1: There is it only the beginning? But he'd be like,
• 1:01:45
Speaker 1: answ your boots. You gotta lean down into his ear
• 1:01:49
Speaker 1: to hear it, into his mouth to hear it. Okay,
• 1:01:55
Speaker 1: here's one. Why are some squirrels tougher than others? I
• 1:01:59
Speaker 1: think its age definitely? Why you? Why are you peeking
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: over my area? I want to see what you're working
• 1:02:04
Speaker 1: off of over there? Why are some squirrels tougher and others?
• 1:02:09
Speaker 1: Are you getting frustrated with? What's on, He's like, he
• 1:02:13
Speaker 1: cooks up he was cooking up some buffalo hot legs.
• 1:02:16
Speaker 1: Kudos to him. He's cooking up some buffalo hot legs
• 1:02:18
Speaker 1: from the Meatator Fishing Game cookbook available now. And uh
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: and he's noticing how some are real, a real bite,
• 1:02:27
Speaker 1: and some are just phenomenal. And he says it doesn't
• 1:02:30
Speaker 1: seem to be related to size. M hmm. I think
• 1:02:35
Speaker 1: I believe that it's a function of age. Well is
• 1:02:38
Speaker 1: he is he assumed? Are we assuming that he shot
• 1:02:40
Speaker 1: all those squirrels and one outing? You know, because if
• 1:02:44
Speaker 1: if one it was was sitting in the fridge or
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: freezer longer could understand why that would have that the
• 1:02:51
Speaker 1: meat would have aged good idea. We're uh, yeah, he's
• 1:02:54
Speaker 1: gonna start a thing. Can I talk about this? I
• 1:02:57
Speaker 1: think so, I don't know what you're talking about. For
• 1:03:01
Speaker 1: questions like this, for questions like this, where you go
• 1:03:05
Speaker 1: you get the question, you're like, yeah, there's gotta be
• 1:03:08
Speaker 1: more to the story. Yeah, Yani is gonna start a
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: thing called ask the Eagle where you get where when
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: you when you're like, what really happened? Because it'd be
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: like someone be like, oh, you know, I was out
• 1:03:22
Speaker 1: and Um, you know, a guy shot at me and
• 1:03:25
Speaker 1: I shot at him. Who was right? And be like
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: I just gotta have to get him on the phone
• 1:03:32
Speaker 1: to find out, Like a little more so, this would
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: be a good thing to ask the eagle because then
• 1:03:36
Speaker 1: you can dig in and get him on the phone
• 1:03:39
Speaker 1: and find out what exactly, because he might not know
• 1:03:43
Speaker 1: that to ask the right questions. Yeah, there's a lot
• 1:03:46
Speaker 1: of factors that go into that kind of stuff that
• 1:03:48
Speaker 1: can be pretty easily missed. I didn't start to pay
• 1:03:51
Speaker 1: attention to aging until a couple of years ago. When
• 1:03:53
Speaker 1: I'm not saying aging age, Yeah, yeah, no, I I agree,
• 1:03:57
Speaker 1: I was. Yeah, I'm addressing both. Suppose because like in
• 1:03:59
Speaker 1: the Scope the A's cookbook lagi q lan Air, he
• 1:04:03
Speaker 1: says that he only will cook a rabbit if you
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: can tear the rabbit's ear like paper. I mean, you
• 1:04:10
Speaker 1: should just be all grab it like you're ripping paper.
• 1:04:13
Speaker 1: And after young rabbits look at you know, young cottail
• 1:04:18
Speaker 1: or hair. When he's dead, you can grab its ear
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: and you should be able to go like this and
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: you can tear the ear. That's a young rabbit, that
• 1:04:26
Speaker 1: that is okay to cook. And he could afford to
• 1:04:29
Speaker 1: be picky. I mean, he's like my brothers would have
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: been perfect for that. He was chasing a rabbit around
• 1:04:36
Speaker 1: a brush pile for like forty five minutes and he
• 1:04:38
Speaker 1: probably had ten holes in his ear from the brush well,
• 1:04:41
Speaker 1: no from him shooting at twenty two at it and
• 1:04:43
Speaker 1: missing him, just hitting his ears, so it was like perforated.
• 1:04:46
Speaker 1: So then yeah, that he might have had a false positive.
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: Just Scoffe mentioned what he did with the rabbits that
• 1:04:52
Speaker 1: whose ears he couldn't rip, He probably would have ground
• 1:04:57
Speaker 1: them up and used them for dog food. No, he
• 1:05:00
Speaker 1: would have ground them up and use them in in
• 1:05:02
Speaker 1: pattes and to make canals and stuff like that would
• 1:05:05
Speaker 1: be my guests. But for these, you know, for his
• 1:05:07
Speaker 1: preparations of like whole muscle preparations, he liked to be
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: able to tear the ear and then you knew he
• 1:05:13
Speaker 1: had a nice tender specimen. I might start doing that,
• 1:05:16
Speaker 1: and then I'm just gonna turn my other rabbits like
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: Kevin Murphy did, into rots. It's not a bad idea,
• 1:05:23
Speaker 1: because man, those were good. Yeah, rabbit brots, white brots,
• 1:05:29
Speaker 1: fat man, I forgot about those rabbit bros. Yeah, those
• 1:05:33
Speaker 1: were delicious. Some bitch. We should put that in the cookbook.
• 1:05:36
Speaker 1: What kind of spices you throw in there? What's a
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: flavor profile? Oh? Man, I don't know if I can
• 1:05:41
Speaker 1: remember off that my head. Oh like just for brots,
• 1:05:46
Speaker 1: for those like white pepper, corianders, a bunch of things
• 1:05:49
Speaker 1: you put in brods. Yeah, people put mace in the rocks. Yeah,
• 1:05:52
Speaker 1: but that pretty classic beer brody, you know, not Italian
• 1:05:57
Speaker 1: not you know, there's no spice, you know, mild beer
• 1:06:01
Speaker 1: brody kind of flavor. What else you got seacon of
• 1:06:09
Speaker 1: eating wild game? He said? He says, He says it's
• 1:06:15
Speaker 1: a wild game logistical question. He hasn't found a definitive
• 1:06:18
Speaker 1: answer too, after a decent amount of research, which is
• 1:06:21
Speaker 1: so I'm just guessing that nobody's in a blog post
• 1:06:24
Speaker 1: about it. I have searched high and low. How's he's
• 1:06:30
Speaker 1: on the library looking up the card You open up
• 1:06:32
Speaker 1: the card catalog. How much wild game do you think
• 1:06:36
Speaker 1: it takes to feed a family of four? And then specifically,
• 1:06:40
Speaker 1: he asked, you, guys, keep track of how many animals
• 1:06:43
Speaker 1: you and your family eating a given year. It's hard
• 1:06:48
Speaker 1: to answer, just depends on your habits, right, Like, well,
• 1:06:52
Speaker 1: let me do for instance, I was having this conversation
• 1:06:53
Speaker 1: with Brodie. Here you got family of four, very strict
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: wild game diet. Brody's got through a coyle, moose, cow,
• 1:07:06
Speaker 1: elk and a box that's like you know, eating at home,
• 1:07:13
Speaker 1: and when you're eating at home, you're eating and he
• 1:07:15
Speaker 1: throws down heavy on game and then a variety of
• 1:07:17
Speaker 1: small games thrown in. I kind of look at it
• 1:07:19
Speaker 1: because I could do a lot of, like you know,
• 1:07:21
Speaker 1: I get to do like a fair bit of It's
• 1:07:25
Speaker 1: harder for me to answer because we fish a lot
• 1:07:29
Speaker 1: um small game a lot. But then the other thing
• 1:07:31
Speaker 1: is is we when we're out, like most of my
• 1:07:33
Speaker 1: hunting is when we're out filming the TV show. And
• 1:07:37
Speaker 1: so then we have a crew, and with our crew
• 1:07:39
Speaker 1: we divide out, so like if we get an elk,
• 1:07:42
  Speaker 1: you're like, oh, there's an elk, but then it's it's
• 1:07:44
Speaker 1: the sixth of an elk or a fourth of an
• 1:07:46
Speaker 1: elk when we divide out for because we split out
• 1:07:48
Speaker 1: for the crew, so I never get like an accurate count.
• 1:07:53
Speaker 1: And then I also get a lot of stuff from
• 1:07:56
Speaker 1: buddies right where Buddy minal whatever, Buddy min will get
• 1:07:59
Speaker 1: a wild hell oh you know here here's a pig
• 1:08:01
Speaker 1: leg and then later I catch some salmon and I'll be, oh,
• 1:08:05
Speaker 1: bro here's a couple of salmon flays. So it's like,
• 1:08:07
Speaker 1: I never like look at it in terms of but
• 1:08:10
Speaker 1: Brody has a good count. But that's that's not extreme,
• 1:08:13
Speaker 1: but it's pretty that's a lot. Yeah, but it seems
• 1:08:17
  Speaker 1: like a lot. I don't think it is. I know
• 1:08:19
Speaker 1: that because he's devoted. Yeah, before um, I had kids
• 1:08:24
Speaker 1: and so it's because kids and met a kind of
• 1:08:27
Speaker 1: started the same time for me. But prior to that,
• 1:08:30
Speaker 1: my wife and I would go through to elk no
• 1:08:33
Speaker 1: problem every year. And it wasn't like, you know, we
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: ate elk, but it wasn't like we were trying to
• 1:08:42
Speaker 1: eat elk five times a week. You know. It's just
• 1:08:44
Speaker 1: like when we when we ate read meat, that's what
• 1:08:46
Speaker 1: we ate. But there's no problem to go through to
• 1:08:48
Speaker 1: two cow elk. It depends on how you're cooking, too,
• 1:08:51
Speaker 1: because if you get like, if you're sitting high on
• 1:08:54
Speaker 1: the hog, right, you got a full freezer, which is
• 1:08:57
Speaker 1: how I look at it. But I just always watching
• 1:08:59
Speaker 1: my free your levels. But you know, if you're sitting
• 1:09:04
Speaker 1: pretty you might be doing things you're doing like big rows.
• 1:09:08
Speaker 1: If you're sitting thin, you might be making like fajitas
• 1:09:12
Speaker 1: or something right where it. So you take like a
• 1:09:14
Speaker 1: you could have family five sown and you get one
• 1:09:16
Speaker 1: pound of like a one pound roll stout and make
• 1:09:20
Speaker 1: like a dish that has like the nice flavor and
• 1:09:24
Speaker 1: it's fun and everything, and it's like a wild game dish.
• 1:09:26
Speaker 1: But it's not like you're sitting down and laying out
• 1:09:30
Speaker 1: big rolls where people are eating wedges off that thing.
• 1:09:34
Speaker 1: So just it just depends so much. Yeah, I feel
• 1:09:37
Speaker 1: like I've heard like one guy can take down an
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: elk throughout the year, like that's kind of the ratio. Sure,
• 1:09:42
Speaker 1: but I mean it's subjective like how you're eating. Absolutely yeah,
• 1:09:46
Speaker 1: but you yeah, I think that one person who's a
• 1:09:48
Speaker 1: dedicated wild game eater is puts the elk in the
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: freezer and you got, yeah, you got like a with
• 1:09:56
Speaker 1: that you could probably even have you could be having
• 1:09:58
Speaker 1: a little breakfast sausage. Now. Then when someone says an
• 1:10:01
Speaker 1: elk that could be as little as sixty five or
• 1:10:05
Speaker 1: seventy five pounds of meat, Yeah, exactly, So big variants there. Um, yeah,
• 1:10:16
Speaker 1: I'm gonna get better at that. You know who I'm
• 1:10:17
Speaker 1: gonna ask and get and we'll bring this up. There's
• 1:10:19
Speaker 1: no you can't get better at it. There's no because listen,
• 1:10:23
Speaker 1: what you could do is by weight. You could very
• 1:10:28
Speaker 1: easily just be have a scale in the kitchen and
• 1:10:32
Speaker 1: every time you go to cook, you just, you know,
• 1:10:34
Speaker 1: weigh it, make a little note somewhere, and at the
• 1:10:37
Speaker 1: end of the year you tally it up and say,
• 1:10:39
Speaker 1: you know what, we ate three d pounds elk, thirty
• 1:10:42
Speaker 1: pounds of turkeys perch flats, like there's two pounds perch
• 1:10:46
Speaker 1: plays right, write it down there, you go, let's do it. Yeah,
• 1:10:51
Speaker 1: that'd be cool man, to have a little list. You
• 1:10:52
Speaker 1: take it out, weigh it, write it down, and then
• 1:10:54
Speaker 1: you'd be like, oh, so we ate seventy some pounds
• 1:10:57
Speaker 1: of venison, thirteen pounds of perch filets, x pounds of
• 1:11:00
Speaker 1: catfish pile AT's And then if you wanted to, you
• 1:11:03
Speaker 1: could take cucumbers, averages all those animals, and then you
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: could say I ate roughly x pounds wild game to elk,
• 1:11:14
Speaker 1: and roughly for turkeys. Yeah, man, because I feel like
• 1:11:17
  Speaker 1: I could amount of stuff I kill. I mean, I'm
• 1:11:19
Speaker 1: mostly cooking for one I could eat while game, breakfast, lunch,
• 1:11:24
Speaker 1: and dinner every day of the year and still have
• 1:11:28
Speaker 1: game left over. And then you got like social media
• 1:11:31
Speaker 1: personalities who there's no you can't account there's no possible
• 1:11:38
Speaker 1: way to account for all of the stuff they kill,
• 1:11:42
Speaker 1: and they're like, wow, game bro, Wow, game bro. You
• 1:11:44
Speaker 1: realize dude, you shot thousands and thousands of pounds of meat.
• 1:11:49
Speaker 1: Where'd that all go? So yeah, you wind up like
• 1:11:53
Speaker 1: it's just like I know enough to know when's like
• 1:11:56
Speaker 1: I don't enough to know when when I see something
• 1:11:59
Speaker 1: little fish, and then you kind of know enough to
• 1:12:01
Speaker 1: know when you I don't know nothing but tender lewins.
• 1:12:06
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I've had people level that at me, Like
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: I last year, I killed a bowl elk elk and
• 1:12:12
Speaker 1: too mature mule here bucks and that's way more than
• 1:12:15
Speaker 1: one man can can eat in a year. But I
• 1:12:17
Speaker 1: went home a couple of times and filled my YETI
• 1:12:20
Speaker 1: one oh five to the brim and gave it to
• 1:12:23
Speaker 1: my parents, gave it my cousins, give me an uncle
• 1:12:25
Speaker 1: and the party with it. Yeah, exactly, smoke something, party
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: with some it's some fun thing to do and then
• 1:12:31
Speaker 1: like do some sharkottery just like kind of like yeah,
• 1:12:33
Speaker 1: around with some experiments of what you want to do.
• 1:12:35
Speaker 1: And when I live in Seattle, I practice a lot
• 1:12:38
Speaker 1: of wild game diplomacy with the people around. But that
• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: with that kind of thing, I would uh, because I
• 1:12:46
Speaker 1: lived around a bunch of people that had no connection
• 1:12:49
Speaker 1: to like this kind of little connection to fishing, like
• 1:12:52
Speaker 1: absolutely no connection or idea about hunting. And um, I'm
• 1:12:56
Speaker 1: thinking primarily three, like my three most immediate neighbors, and
• 1:13:01
Speaker 1: I would bring them a lot, but I would bring
• 1:13:04
Speaker 1: them not so much sometimes frozen, but I would bring
• 1:13:09
Speaker 1: them recipe ready stuff, not like you're trying to dump,
• 1:13:15
Speaker 1: you know, some frozen game bag full of Harry trim
• 1:13:19
Speaker 1: off on someone's doorstep. But I would bring them like,
• 1:13:21
  Speaker 1: here's the thing, right, it's trimmed. Here's what I would
• 1:13:24
Speaker 1: suggest you do with it. You know, here's a fish flat.
• 1:13:29
Speaker 1: I pulled the pin bones and and it was it
• 1:13:33
Speaker 1: was cool man. So yeah, yeah, I do do a
• 1:13:35
Speaker 1: lot of I do give and receive a lot of
• 1:13:40
Speaker 1: uh wild game gifts. But here's another way to approach
• 1:13:44
Speaker 1: answering it. Let's say you take a turkey. So you
• 1:13:48
Speaker 1: got you, you're you and your husband, you and your husband,
• 1:13:53
Speaker 1: you shoot a turkey, and you're gonna cook for you
• 1:13:56
Speaker 1: and your husband. I think that you have each lobe
• 1:14:02
Speaker 1: of the breast is a meal or two for you
• 1:14:06
Speaker 1: and your husband. The two drumsticks, depending if you're like
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: if you're let's say you make soup with the two drumsticks.
• 1:14:14
Speaker 1: There's a couple of meals, a few meals for you
• 1:14:17
Speaker 1: and your husband, and you smoke up the wing pieces
• 1:14:21
Speaker 1: and add them to a gumbo or whatever, and there's
• 1:14:24
Speaker 1: like an additional part for the meal. Or you take
• 1:14:26
Speaker 1: all of that. You've got a big old time that
• 1:14:28
Speaker 1: tom ways twenty pounds. You take all that you want
• 1:14:32
Speaker 1: to make breakfast sausage out of it, you wind up
• 1:14:34
Speaker 1: with like eight pounds of turkey meat. You cut in
• 1:14:37
Speaker 1: a substantial amount of pork trim, so you put in
• 1:14:42
Speaker 1: four pounds of pork trim. You make a twelve pound
• 1:14:46
Speaker 1: batch of apple turkey breakfast sausage out of the mediator.
• 1:14:49
Speaker 1: Fishing game cookbooks say um, and then you frap little
• 1:14:54
Speaker 1: patties for your breakfast and stuff you can you can
• 1:14:56
Speaker 1: eat it twenty five times. There's lots of great ways
• 1:15:00
Speaker 1: to stretch it out like that. What's next? You got one?
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: You said you gotta listen a mile along. Yeah, but
• 1:15:07
Speaker 1: I want you hit me one of years. I can
• 1:15:11
Speaker 1: keep going. I'll do one. Lots of questions about this.
• 1:15:14
Speaker 1: What are those little things around the end of y'all
• 1:15:16
Speaker 1: shooting irons? That's what he says. Is it tape? Do
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: you just shoot through it? Does it affect the bullet?
• 1:15:22
Speaker 1: Why is it even there? Yes, um, all of the
• 1:15:27
Speaker 1: above and no. So it's yes. And now I'll start
• 1:15:30
Speaker 1: with yes. Is yes, it's tape, But it could be
• 1:15:33
Speaker 1: any number of things. It's like, it's common practice. If
• 1:15:36
Speaker 1: you're around mud, if you're around a lot of rain,
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: especially rain that could become freezing rain, snow that you're
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: around snow, Um, you could get things that get into
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: that obstruct your barrel by getting into your muzzle. Um,
• 1:15:55
Speaker 1: And and it's a good idea to keep that stuff out.
• 1:16:00
Speaker 1: You can keep it out. There's thousands of ways of
• 1:16:02
Speaker 1: doing this. They make. Some guys will use finger cots,
• 1:16:06
Speaker 1: which is a little condom looking and prophylactic looking a
• 1:16:09
Speaker 1: little deally. You know what prophylactic means. It just means
• 1:16:12
Speaker 1: disease prevention device, something that prevents disease. UM doesn't necessarily
• 1:16:18
Speaker 1: mean a prophylactic. How we would how you'd use it, Uh,
• 1:16:23
Speaker 1: put a finger coot over your barrel. I don't like
• 1:16:25
Speaker 1: those because they break and they seem to get brittle
• 1:16:29
Speaker 1: when it's super cold out and they just don't last
• 1:16:31
Speaker 1: that long. Or you can take like a little piece
• 1:16:34
Speaker 1: of ziplock baggy or anything and place it over the
• 1:16:38
Speaker 1: muzzle and wrap a piece of medical tape, which is
• 1:16:40
Speaker 1: what I do quite often over it. Electrical tape. You
• 1:16:44
Speaker 1: put a piece over it and then put a wrap
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: around it to keep it from peeling off. I mean,
• 1:16:50
Speaker 1: there's a thousand things, and it's just to keep junk
• 1:16:54
Speaker 1: out of there. Yeah. The thing I think people are
• 1:16:57
Speaker 1: really afraid of that can cause real trouble and injury.
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: I've never had a barrel blow up from from and obstruction,
• 1:17:05
Speaker 1: but the stories you hear would be that you got
• 1:17:07
Speaker 1: a bunch of wet snow in there, You got a
• 1:17:11
Speaker 1: bunch of water in there, and then it got cold
• 1:17:13
Speaker 1: and it froze and and like formed a block ice
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: that was like adhered to the walls you know the
• 1:17:22
Speaker 1: inside of your barrel or you know the inside of
• 1:17:26
Speaker 1: the bore, and you could potentially blow your gun up. Yeah,
• 1:17:31
Speaker 1: because the amount of pressure that can build up in there,
• 1:17:34
Speaker 1: either that or like a wet mud, like a clay
• 1:17:36
Speaker 1: mud or something like that. Yeah, the stories you hear
• 1:17:38
Speaker 1: most or something got in there and froze solid. But
• 1:17:41
Speaker 1: I've never had it happened. But I just do it
• 1:17:44
Speaker 1: because why it's so easy to do it, and there's
• 1:17:46
Speaker 1: no negative, Like why not do it if you're in
• 1:17:48
Speaker 1: a place that's real wet and nasty. Yeah, And I've
• 1:17:50
Speaker 1: had I've been asked that this question a number of
• 1:17:53
Speaker 1: times because I've always my whole life have put electrical
• 1:17:56
Speaker 1: tape around the barrel of a guy. I mean, my
• 1:17:58
Speaker 1: dad taught me that when we first went deer hunting.
• 1:18:01
Speaker 1: So it's always seemed like normalist thing in the world.
• 1:18:03
Speaker 1: But a lot of friends have asked me about that,
• 1:18:05
Speaker 1: and people are always what does that mess with your
• 1:18:07
Speaker 1: bullet flight? Does that slow it down? Like, man, I
• 1:18:10
Speaker 1: really don't think so, Like you know, rifle blasts and
• 1:18:14
Speaker 1: muzzle blast, that tape probably gone before the bullet. Yeah.
• 1:18:19
Speaker 1: This last trip poem, I went down and talked to
• 1:18:20
Speaker 1: a buddy. He's like friend of mine from high school,
• 1:18:22
Speaker 1: and he turned into a Kansas Highway patrol state like
• 1:18:24
Speaker 1: swat sniper and I asked him specifically on that, and
• 1:18:27
Speaker 1: he said that like the gases pushing forward knocks that
• 1:18:30
Speaker 1: out way in advance to like affect that bullet. There's
• 1:18:33
Speaker 1: nothing wrong with that. Yeah, I've talked to all manner
• 1:18:35
Speaker 1: of of of high end shooters who would know enough
• 1:18:40
Speaker 1: to know, and the consensus for sure is that it
• 1:18:45
Speaker 1: doesn't do it. And it went early on when I
• 1:18:48
Speaker 1: really first got onto doing that. If I had something heavy,
• 1:18:51
Speaker 1: like like electrical tape, I would oftentimes if I was
• 1:18:55
Speaker 1: in the moment of truth, I'd oftentimes catch myself reaching
• 1:18:57
Speaker 1: out there to peel it off. Just that a little
• 1:18:59
Speaker 1: bit of nervous. But yeah, I've shot through it many
• 1:19:03
  Speaker 1: many times. Um, I haven't done a lot of I
• 1:19:05
Speaker 1: haven't done like a rigid round of range testing on
• 1:19:08
Speaker 1: it to be interesting to do it be interesting, But
• 1:19:10
Speaker 1: I just there's so many people whose opinion I trust,
• 1:19:12
Speaker 1: who I've talked to about it, that it's Yanni's got
• 1:19:16
Speaker 1: opinions by sitting there though so quiet. Um No, I mean,
• 1:19:19
Speaker 1: I can just say that I've tried it at the
• 1:19:21
Speaker 1: range and I've shot the same size groups shooting through
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: tape as I have, you know, just with a without
• 1:19:28
Speaker 1: tape on my be a fun little video to shoot. Yeah,
• 1:19:33
Speaker 1: for sure, there's people that have done it on the
• 1:19:36
Speaker 1: old YouTube. Um, but yeah, it's the way to be man,
• 1:19:43
Speaker 1: keep it protected. Okay, your turn? Uh you boys got you?
• 1:19:49
Speaker 1: Guys got burned in one year? Yeah, I got one.
• 1:19:50
Speaker 1: I'd love to talk about. Go for it, Sam, Yeah,
• 1:19:53
Speaker 1: I was looking at this one. This guy says, I
• 1:19:56
Speaker 1: joined Instagram recently and have already seen a few instances
• 1:19:59
Speaker 1: of anti would hunter sentiment. Of course, it shouldn't matter
• 1:20:02
Speaker 1: to an ethical law by any hunter what others think.
• 1:20:05
Speaker 1: But I was curious what exactly counts as road hunting.
• 1:20:08
Speaker 1: On the extreme, one could strictly define it as someone
• 1:20:10
Speaker 1: who drives around all day glassing from the truck or
• 1:20:13
Speaker 1: a TV, really rarely leaving the car until an animals found.
• 1:20:17
Speaker 1: Is this actually illegal in some states as a parenthetical clause?
• 1:20:20
Speaker 1: But there's a spectrum here. I wonder what the where
• 1:20:22
Speaker 1: the line is typically drawn. Mm hmm, you're gonna start,
• 1:20:28
  Speaker 1: I'll start. I don't give a ship go ahead. This
• 1:20:31
Speaker 1: is coming from a guy that does a fair bit
• 1:20:33
Speaker 1: of road hunt, meaning like like he's right, it's hard
• 1:20:37
Speaker 1: to define if the other day we were out uh
• 1:20:41
Speaker 1: me and Yanni were oute messing around, and we stopped
• 1:20:44
Speaker 1: a vehicle, rolled the window down, and we're glass and
• 1:20:48
Speaker 1: some sandstone outcrops for cotton tales. I mean, let's be straight,
• 1:20:57
Speaker 1: if we'd have found one, we'd gone after it. So
• 1:21:02
  Speaker 1: it's like, right there, there's a spot I want to
• 1:21:06
Speaker 1: go check for cotton tails not long from now, and
• 1:21:09
Speaker 1: my and and and what I'm gonna do before I
• 1:21:11
Speaker 1: get rolling is I'm gonna go and check a bunch
• 1:21:13
Speaker 1: of little willow bottoms that I could pretty much look
• 1:21:16
Speaker 1: out the window to see if they're they're tracked up.
• 1:21:19
Speaker 1: I keep a window mount and my spotting scope in
• 1:21:21
Speaker 1: my truck that so if I can just roll down
• 1:21:23
Speaker 1: the window, mount up to scope and look out, that's yeah.
• 1:21:27
Speaker 1: But is that scouting or is that hunting? Well? I
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: was damn sure hunting all day when I was looking
• 1:21:31
Speaker 1: for cotton tails on those these outcrops, because if I
• 1:21:33
Speaker 1: would have found one, I would have got. I would
• 1:21:35
Speaker 1: have got, we'd have got the kids out and gone
• 1:21:37
Speaker 1: and one after it, and we'd have glassed it up
• 1:21:40
Speaker 1: from the rig. I think when people use road hunter
• 1:21:42
Speaker 1: in a in a negative way, it would be like
• 1:21:45
Speaker 1: hut the window shooting out like shooting out of which
• 1:21:51
Speaker 1: is illegal. So it's illegal to shoot out of your truck.
• 1:21:53
Speaker 1: Depending it's illegal to shoot out of your truck if
• 1:21:55
Speaker 1: you're on a maintained road, so you can't shoot from
• 1:21:59
Speaker 1: a cross from the right up from the legal right
• 1:22:03
Speaker 1: away of roads. So I think when people talk about
• 1:22:08
Speaker 1: a road like when when if someone uses road hunter negatively,
• 1:22:11
Speaker 1: I think it's like someone who's hunt plan. Okay, their
• 1:22:16
Speaker 1: hunt plan is to drive around heater blasting um yeah,
• 1:22:23
Speaker 1: eating chester fried chicken. They bought the gas station, knocking
• 1:22:26
Speaker 1: that back, with the plan being that they're gonna find
• 1:22:29
Speaker 1: something and shoot it from out the truck window. Uh,
• 1:22:34
Speaker 1: laws be damned. I don't know, Like that's what comes
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: to my mind. Well, and there's a lot of Western
• 1:22:38
Speaker 1: hunters who who don't want to shoot a deer and
• 1:22:41
Speaker 1: elk more than quarter miles from the road, because how
• 1:22:45
Speaker 1: the hell else are you going to get back to
• 1:22:46
Speaker 1: the house and everyone looks like you could be driving
• 1:22:49
Speaker 1: along um headed to a place that you intend to
• 1:22:54
Speaker 1: begin walking. I've had this turkey hunt driv into my
• 1:22:59
Speaker 1: turkey hunting spot. I remember one time I was with
• 1:23:01
Speaker 1: my late buddy Eric Current and we're driving our turkey
• 1:23:03
Speaker 1: on spot. We crossed over a drainage and we look
• 1:23:07
Speaker 1: and see some turkeys. Right. We were actually in the
• 1:23:11
Speaker 1: truth be told. We were actually had to a place
• 1:23:13
Speaker 1: we we hunt turkeys in a place where you had
• 1:23:15
Speaker 1: to you had to to hunt it realistically, you had
• 1:23:18
Speaker 1: to hike in and sleep out. But it wasn't like
• 1:23:21
Speaker 1: we like, we see these turkeys and we just pulled
• 1:23:25
Speaker 1: over once and started to try to work the birds.
• 1:23:27
Speaker 1: So someone like, oh, there's a bunch of road hunters.
• 1:23:29
Speaker 1: But you know, it's funny you mentioned at the moment,
• 1:23:31
Speaker 1: at the moment you caught me. Sure. A friend of
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: my dad's when I was growing up, I remember we
• 1:23:34
Speaker 1: were turkey hunting in eastern Washington, and I remember him saying, oh,
• 1:23:39
Speaker 1: even if I saw dirty pound tom from the truck,
• 1:23:42
Speaker 1: I'd never shoot it. Never. I'd never shoot an animal
• 1:23:45
Speaker 1: I spotted from the truck. And he spotted from the truck.
• 1:23:48
Speaker 1: That's because you're not hunting, you're not out on foot.
• 1:23:51
Speaker 1: And that was just like that was his own, like
• 1:23:53
Speaker 1: Etho surround would Yeah, I would never block a fella
• 1:23:57
Speaker 1: from having his own. Everybody sets out there on guardrails, right, absolutely,
• 1:24:02
Speaker 1: But I mean I've done that. I've done that too
• 1:24:04
Speaker 1: my dear camp this year. The first day we drove
• 1:24:06
Speaker 1: out there, we we saw enough bucks between our campground
• 1:24:10
Speaker 1: and the trailhead that we all could have tagged out
• 1:24:11
Speaker 1: in the first hour of the first day, and none
• 1:24:15
Speaker 1: of us took a shot because we were just getting
• 1:24:18
Speaker 1: out there. And I was like, Oh, this isn't this
• 1:24:19
Speaker 1: isn't how we this is how we pictured. It isn't
• 1:24:22
Speaker 1: the experience we were looking for. So I think that's
• 1:24:25
Speaker 1: what it comes down to for some people. So I
• 1:24:27
  Speaker 1: wouldn't I wouldn't begrudge folks who, you know, don't feel
• 1:24:31
Speaker 1: comfortable walking around a lot too back roads in Montana,
• 1:24:35
Speaker 1: driving around trying to figure out where the deer are
• 1:24:38
Speaker 1: and then get out and do it, do it right.
• 1:24:40
Speaker 1: But you know, personally, I like to be a couple
• 1:24:43
Speaker 1: of miles back with a backpack on glassing and feel
• 1:24:47
Speaker 1: like I'm you know, engaging with the the environment. The
• 1:24:52
Speaker 1: other day, we're I was taking my had all three
• 1:24:54
Speaker 1: of my kids and we were going out to sit
• 1:24:56
Speaker 1: for white tailed does um and we had a pop
• 1:25:01
Speaker 1: up blind set up harding for the yards from where
• 1:25:05
Speaker 1: we could part, and right away we pulled up lo
• 1:25:10
Speaker 1: and behold out pops from wind row out pops a
• 1:25:14
Speaker 1: bunch of does in range, and we still got the
• 1:25:18
Speaker 1: back of the you know, back of the truck open.
• 1:25:22
Speaker 1: My boy was like very interested in us getting this
• 1:25:28
Speaker 1: taken care of right here and now, and I didn't
• 1:25:31
Speaker 1: because it wasn't what I was trying to demonstrate to them.
• 1:25:36
Speaker 1: We had gone and put up a pop up bland.
• 1:25:38
Speaker 1: We're talking about the need to be sitting and quietly
• 1:25:40
Speaker 1: waiting and how all this worked and that that they
• 1:25:42
Speaker 1: would come out to feed at night and right and
• 1:25:45
Speaker 1: then all of a sudden he was pissed. But I
• 1:25:49
Speaker 1: was like, no, because this isn't like I'm showing you
• 1:25:51
Speaker 1: a thing, and this is what I'm showing you. I'm
• 1:25:53
Speaker 1: not showing you this right Um. If it had been
• 1:25:57
Speaker 1: like the last day of the season and we put
• 1:26:02
Speaker 1: in our time and we're going back after our last
• 1:26:06
Speaker 1: morning hunt and out pops them out of the wind
• 1:26:08
Speaker 1: roll right down the road, it would be It's just
• 1:26:10
  Speaker 1: a different situation. It's like and it's like it's not
• 1:26:12
Speaker 1: like something that you can explain or or or prescribe
• 1:26:17
Speaker 1: to another individual and be like Oh no, here's what
• 1:26:19
Speaker 1: you should and shouldn't do. It's just like it's just
• 1:26:22
Speaker 1: your eyes just running in your head. Man, should always
• 1:26:25
Speaker 1: run in your head. Yeah, I always. I always encourage
• 1:26:27
Speaker 1: people to just you know, try wandering around because I know,
• 1:26:34
  Speaker 1: yeah exactly. I mean that's to me, that's what's fun
• 1:26:36
Speaker 1: about hunting is the exploration aspect of it. And and
• 1:26:40
Speaker 1: so many, so many people just don't feel like they can,
• 1:26:43
Speaker 1: you know, know how to break down an animal that
• 1:26:45
Speaker 1: they can't drag to the truck or or know their
• 1:26:48
Speaker 1: way to you know, how to figure out how to
• 1:26:50
Speaker 1: get back to the truck. And yeah, I mean I
• 1:26:52
Speaker 1: understand that, but encourage people to learn and say that
• 1:26:56
Speaker 1: it might deepen the experience. The other thing about it
• 1:26:59
Speaker 1: that makes me uncomfortab bull is that different people have
• 1:27:04
Speaker 1: different abilities, and people have a lot of people have
• 1:27:07
Speaker 1: pretty serious disabilities. Man. So you were like, oh, yeah,
• 1:27:10
Speaker 1: road hunters, road hunters, they're no good. It's like, you
• 1:27:13
Speaker 1: know what, there's a lot of people, I mean, they
• 1:27:15
Speaker 1: don't have the luxury man, because of any number of things, age,
• 1:27:20
Speaker 1: physical condition, disabilities. So it's like I hate to, like,
• 1:27:25
Speaker 1: you know, to act like oh like the I hate
• 1:27:28
Speaker 1: to act like there's these like broad condemnations of behavior
• 1:27:32
Speaker 1: that exists out there when it just is like, you know,
• 1:27:35
Speaker 1: it's it's almost like, yeah, I know what's in their heart. Yeah,
• 1:27:39
Speaker 1: I'm supportive of people getting out hunting hard to know
• 1:27:42
Speaker 1: something in someone and and honestly, like if if there's
• 1:27:45
Speaker 1: guys doing that, I mean, it's that's not really affecting
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: what you're doing. If you're hiking, you know, deep into
• 1:27:50
Speaker 1: a wilderness area. I mean, if anything, they're proving your
• 1:27:55
Speaker 1: point that you know, getting far back, getting away from
• 1:27:58
Speaker 1: the road has been official because a lot of a
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: lot of people do hunt from the truck. A lot
• 1:28:03
Speaker 1: of people hunt for the truck who wouldn't even admit
• 1:28:06
Speaker 1: that they hunt from the truck. So it's a I
• 1:28:09
Speaker 1: think doesn't doesn't affect me as long as they let
• 1:28:14
Speaker 1: me get by them. When they're creeping up before a
• 1:28:16
Speaker 1: service road at five miles an hour thinking they're sneaking
• 1:28:18
Speaker 1: up on ship, they are. I've seen it. They are
• 1:28:24
Speaker 1: sneaking up on stuff. Man. It can it can be
• 1:28:27
Speaker 1: a were a tactic that works. You know, they take
• 1:28:31
  Speaker 1: out like a pres or something that's that's that's silent
• 1:28:33
  Speaker 1: under a certain RPM I don't know. It's like the
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: old rancher man that drives like animals, never scared of
• 1:28:40
Speaker 1: the ranch because the ranch truck just drives all over
• 1:28:42
Speaker 1: the ranch every day. But yeah, as long as it's legal,
• 1:28:48
  Speaker 1: I mean, I've done it. I've done No. I wanted
• 1:28:51
Speaker 1: to say my fair share, but I dabbled in shooting
• 1:28:54
Speaker 1: some deer literally out of a truck where it was
• 1:28:57
Speaker 1: legal to do that, and it and p you're on
• 1:29:00
Speaker 1: private property. No, and like you said, un maintained you
• 1:29:04
Speaker 1: know in Nebraska, and um, it was novel at the moment.
• 1:29:10
Speaker 1: But by the time, like my third dough was dead.
• 1:29:13
Speaker 1: This is back when they had a booming deer population.
• 1:29:15
Speaker 1: We had lots of dough tags to phil Um, it's like, okay,
• 1:29:19
Speaker 1: that was enough of that. You know, I'm gonna go
• 1:29:22
Speaker 1: take my rifle for a walk, just out stacking them
• 1:29:24
Speaker 1: up like cordwood in the back of your truck. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
• 1:29:27
Speaker 1: And like the first two evenings it was like, wow,
• 1:29:29
Speaker 1: I never thought, you know, because I didn't grow up.
• 1:29:32
Speaker 1: You know, you couldn't do that in Michigan, right, Some
• 1:29:35
Speaker 1: guys use some guys love to see road hunters because
• 1:29:38
Speaker 1: they're like, oh, man, you know that are you're gonna
• 1:29:40
Speaker 1: go there and you're gonna think it's super crowded, but
• 1:29:44
Speaker 1: it's all road hunters, So don't worry about it, meaning
• 1:29:48
Speaker 1: that there's still you're gonna It has the appearance of
• 1:29:51
Speaker 1: being overplayed, but it's not over played because I mean,
• 1:29:55
Speaker 1: you like hike down in some little spot that's that
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: you can't see from the road. That's a big handle,
• 1:29:59
Speaker 1: that's a big anilo put there like a big thing
• 1:30:03
  Speaker 1: with anilo punt. There's I think there's a lot of
• 1:30:05
Speaker 1: people who have the mistaken notion because it seems like
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: you're in flat open country that feel as though when
• 1:30:11
Speaker 1: you take gander out across the landscape, they feel like
• 1:30:15
Speaker 1: they're seeing it and you're just not. There are so
• 1:30:20
Speaker 1: many dips in pockets, and it's just like you can
• 1:30:25
Speaker 1: out walk that stuff like I don't care if you
• 1:30:27
Speaker 1: look and you see like I can see clear to
• 1:30:29
Speaker 1: you know yonder Mesa. You don't head toward that mason
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: same direction. You're finding all kinds of animals that you
• 1:30:36
Speaker 1: do not see, and so it's um, yeah, I'll oftentimes
• 1:30:41
Speaker 1: get out like think you're seeing it all from the
• 1:30:42
Speaker 1: truck when we would get out and hunt the same
• 1:30:45
Speaker 1: country and have a very different experience bumping animals along
• 1:30:48
Speaker 1: the way, have very different experience than what you thought
• 1:30:50
Speaker 1: you were seeing. What you're looking out. Unless you're looking
• 1:30:52
Speaker 1: out in a salt pan, you don't know what's going on.
• 1:30:58
Speaker 1: Ady for another one. Yep, what's his fellow's name? Before
• 1:31:06
Speaker 1: I get Before I get to that one. This Chuck's
• 1:31:10
Speaker 1: wondering what your thoughts on the flick, Jeremiah Johnson are.
• 1:31:15
Speaker 1: I mean, I've talked about that. It's the greatest, one
• 1:31:18
Speaker 1: of the greatest movies ever made, straight greatest movies ever made.
• 1:31:22
Speaker 1: The ending of that movie is one of the saddest things. Um,
• 1:31:29
Speaker 1: one of the saddest, most contemplative exchanges ever captured in
• 1:31:33
Speaker 1: American cinema. Loaded with symbolism, wonderful movie. There's a little
• 1:31:43
Speaker 1: little corny moment, a corny moment or two that I
• 1:31:46
Speaker 1: wish they would have chopped out splashing around the creek
• 1:31:50
Speaker 1: trying to catch a trout. That and I'm particularly thinking
• 1:31:53
Speaker 1: like the great character Bear Claw Chris clapp One, a
• 1:31:56
Speaker 1: great character played by Grandpa Walton. Um, uh, little little
• 1:32:04
Speaker 1: corn pone, you know, but my god, does that movie
• 1:32:07
Speaker 1: wind up just being like being a pretty profound movie
• 1:32:11
Speaker 1: about loneliness. Can you rewatch it yet? No, I'm glad
• 1:32:18
Speaker 1: you just brought it up from going on holiday movie. Well,
• 1:32:22
Speaker 1: you know, it might like there's parts of it that
• 1:32:24
Speaker 1: would confuse them a little bit. There's there's some there's death.
• 1:32:27
Speaker 1: You know, there's like death and insanity and stuff and there.
• 1:32:29
Speaker 1: It might be confusing to kids, but they can they
• 1:32:31
Speaker 1: can hack it pretty good. In terms of kids. I'm
• 1:32:34
Speaker 1: using in favor of I'm usually a little ahead of
• 1:32:38
Speaker 1: the I get them rolling on stuff earlier than you're
• 1:32:42
Speaker 1: supposed to in terms of what you expose them to.
• 1:32:46
Speaker 1: Kind of going explanations with them. Opens up good conversations, man,
• 1:32:50
Speaker 1: opens up good conversations. Yeah, I'm not like one of those.
• 1:32:53
  Speaker 1: I mean they've got you know, there's I'm sure there's
• 1:32:55
Speaker 1: like a lot of great parents who are very you know,
• 1:32:57
Speaker 1: want to have like the world's all innocent and all that,
• 1:33:01
  Speaker 1: And I don't know, I don't know what you get
• 1:33:03
Speaker 1: from painting a picture of the world being all in
• 1:33:05
Speaker 1: the children that naive children's what you get personally. That's
• 1:33:08
Speaker 1: my feeling on it. But I have But but again,
• 1:33:11
Speaker 1: you know, if I could have had parallel lives and
• 1:33:13
Speaker 1: raise some one way and raise something the other day,
• 1:33:14
Speaker 1: and then compared him at the end. I don't have
• 1:33:16
Speaker 1: that luxury. So it's just gut instant because I don't
• 1:33:18
Speaker 1: want a dog on any parents who who who? I
• 1:33:20
Speaker 1: don't want a dog on parents who are real protective.
• 1:33:23
Speaker 1: But no, we kind of roll out the ugly realities
• 1:33:26
Speaker 1: and the beautiful realities. Um. With that said, I would
• 1:33:30
Speaker 1: show him, but I have not yet. It's a profound
• 1:33:33
Speaker 1: movie if you. I think it's a profound movie if
• 1:33:35
Speaker 1: you look at it in the right way and pay
• 1:33:37
Speaker 1: attention to what to the things that are said, especially
• 1:33:42
Speaker 1: the end when he's cooking at rabbit. That's gonna be
• 1:33:45
Speaker 1: a tough ass rabbit. The way he's cook just skinned
• 1:33:50
Speaker 1: out rabbit stuck on a skewer ten years since I's
• 1:33:53
Speaker 1: gonna be chewing he's in. And the thing is, he's
• 1:33:58
Speaker 1: cooking a rabbit out a spit in any any tear.
• 1:34:01
Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, he goes and tears off a
• 1:34:04
Speaker 1: piece of that rabbit. He like tears off his shoulder,
• 1:34:06
Speaker 1: off that cotton tail, And I'm like, bullshit, you raise
• 1:34:13
Speaker 1: that rabbit? Yeah, yeah, maybe he is lathering it up
• 1:34:18
Speaker 1: with something he had wrapped and foil, and then he's
• 1:34:21
Speaker 1: just putting a final little singe on it. But he's yeah,
• 1:34:24
Speaker 1: he's cooking. He's cooking up wrapped me. My buddy Ben
• 1:34:26
Speaker 1: Freed and we were little kids would cook cotton tails
• 1:34:28
Speaker 1: that way. And I'm telling you, man, but he's cooking.
• 1:34:30
Speaker 1: He's got a high above the flame. He's got the
• 1:34:32
Speaker 1: right idea. But he tears off a hunt and throws
• 1:34:36
Speaker 1: it the bear cross, bear clawed Chris Clap and bear claw.
• 1:34:39
Speaker 1: Chris Clap observes how he's learned to cook rabbit very well,
• 1:34:45
Speaker 1: but still I wasn't buying it. Lance rode in and
• 1:34:51
Speaker 1: he says, uh, my right, what are you gonna say
• 1:34:54
Speaker 1: about Jeremiah Johnson? Why did you ask the question? I
• 1:34:56
Speaker 1: gave the answer. Why don't got an answer? Nothing to
• 1:34:58
Speaker 1: say about it? Why did you pick it? Because I
• 1:35:00
Speaker 1: thought it'd be interesting to hear your answer? Doesn't it specifically?
• 1:35:05
Speaker 1: Ask Steve's opinion? It does, actually, But I mean, I
• 1:35:09
  Speaker 1: think it's a good movie. I just haven't um I
• 1:35:11
Speaker 1: couldn't articulate like that, and I haven't um digested it
• 1:35:16
Speaker 1: quite to the point that you have, you know, Yeah,
• 1:35:18
Speaker 1: he's coming up from the from the Mexican War. He's
• 1:35:23
Speaker 1: damaged goods, he's got PTSD. What's what they'd call it.
• 1:35:27
Speaker 1: Now you gather he's been damaged from the war. Comes
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: up the trap all right, but he's too late. The
• 1:35:35
Speaker 1: beaver market already collapsed. It's a sad movie. If you're
• 1:35:41
Speaker 1: listening property, it's a sad movie. Anyone would know what's
• 1:35:45
  Speaker 1: a sad movie. But there's some, there's some, there's some
• 1:35:48
Speaker 1: like there's some good stuff. So we got one from
• 1:35:51
Speaker 1: Kevin and it's one of you guys have already touched on.
• 1:35:53
Speaker 1: But it's about bird hunting and like how to pull
• 1:35:56
Speaker 1: shot and like being scared about giving people who are
• 1:35:59
Speaker 1: just getting used to the to wild meat. Um. So
• 1:36:02
Speaker 1: it's firstly, after cleaning ten or fifteen birds of my
• 1:36:04
Speaker 1: own prior or with no experience, I got a lot
• 1:36:07
Speaker 1: better at the process. However, no matter how to go
• 1:36:10
Speaker 1: about it, he's still finding shot in the birds, and
• 1:36:13
Speaker 1: he's wondering, is there a reliable way to like give
• 1:36:17
Speaker 1: this bird meat to people without having shot in it.
• 1:36:21
Speaker 1: So the first thing I would say, like I've been
• 1:36:22
Speaker 1: like a lifelong bird hunter out in Kansas, uh and
• 1:36:25
Speaker 1: one technique that I just found. It was like taking
• 1:36:27
Speaker 1: the bird's hole, putting him in water, and like sprinkling
• 1:36:30
Speaker 1: in like a couple of teaspoons of salt. And like
• 1:36:32
Speaker 1: when that shot comes in and hits the bird and
• 1:36:34
Speaker 1: it hits the feathers, it will like bring the feathers
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: along with it in most cases. And what I found
• 1:36:39
Speaker 1: is if you put it in overnight in the fridge
• 1:36:41
Speaker 1: like that saltwater will actually pull the shot in the
• 1:36:43
Speaker 1: feathers out of there. So understand how that happens, I
• 1:36:46
Speaker 1: don't know either, but like it brings it to the
• 1:36:48
Speaker 1: surface in most cases. And so I just like pluck
• 1:36:50
Speaker 1: it right off the edge of the bird toss it away.
• 1:36:53
Speaker 1: It's not foolproof. It doesn't pull all of them, but
• 1:36:56
Speaker 1: it brings a lot of them up there. Like Otherwise,
• 1:36:58
Speaker 1: like you just gotta like like breast the bird out,
• 1:37:01
Speaker 1: massage it down, like find the babies in there, maybe
• 1:37:05
Speaker 1: slice it up, and then take the carcass and use
• 1:37:06
Speaker 1: it for stock. Some birds, you can hold a breast
• 1:37:09
Speaker 1: chunk up to a bright light and you can see
• 1:37:12
Speaker 1: the shot if you breast it out for sure. Working
• 1:37:14
  Speaker 1: Man's X ray, get yourself an m R. Machine. Yeah,
• 1:37:21
Speaker 1: run through the m r Yeah, no, no, serious bird
• 1:37:23
  Speaker 1: hunter doesn't have it's m r um. You know, we're
• 1:37:26
Speaker 1: talking about getting the feathers out by A great trick
• 1:37:28
Speaker 1: is to stick take a toothpick mm hmm. And sometimes
• 1:37:32
Speaker 1: you can pull shot too. If it dragged a lot
• 1:37:33
Speaker 1: of feathers or hair into a cotton tail, you put
• 1:37:36
Speaker 1: a toothpick in there and twirlet and you'll pull the hair, squirrels,
• 1:37:40
Speaker 1: anything like that. You'll pull the hair out and you
• 1:37:42
Speaker 1: can oft times you pull it out and you'll have
• 1:37:44
Speaker 1: a little bit of shots like locked up in there. Yeah,
• 1:37:46
Speaker 1: because you picture like a comet. Haley's comment up. Twayne
• 1:37:51
Speaker 1: was born the year the Haley. You know, Hayley's comment
• 1:37:54
Speaker 1: comes every seventy five years. Dayne was born the year
• 1:37:57
Speaker 1: it came, and and predicted that he would come in
• 1:37:59
Speaker 1: with the common and go out with the common and
• 1:38:01
Speaker 1: went out with Hayley's comment. Yeah. Anyways, picture of comment
• 1:38:05
Speaker 1: when you see a picture of a comet and it
• 1:38:08
Speaker 1: shows like the rock and it's got the flames that
• 1:38:10
Speaker 1: kind of wrap around the front and trail out in
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: the back like a shot goes in there like that
• 1:38:16
Speaker 1: dragon hair like flames and you put it in and
• 1:38:19
Speaker 1: pull it out. That's the noise it makes. But the
• 1:38:26
Speaker 1: Brian one, man, I don't it works for me. I
• 1:38:29
  Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know if it's like something with
• 1:38:31
Speaker 1: the osmoss or like I don't know, like when like
• 1:38:35
Speaker 1: Brian or salt like it does draw things out of
• 1:38:38
  Speaker 1: the meat, but I don't understand. I don't understand how
• 1:38:41
Speaker 1: that would actually expunge the shot, like I was just no,
• 1:38:46
Speaker 1: I'm thinking that it's bringing in the salt water, right,
• 1:38:50
Speaker 1: like it has to equal when it's in that Brian
• 1:38:52
Speaker 1: like that. That's what's going on, right, is that that
• 1:38:54
Speaker 1: Brian is penetrating the meats. It has to become equal
• 1:38:57
Speaker 1: between the two states of liquid and the meat. And
• 1:38:59
Speaker 1: then just like what it's in there, right, So maybe
• 1:39:02
Speaker 1: it's pressure. Maybe if it's just pulling in, then it
• 1:39:05
Speaker 1: might be I mean it's going in through those pores
• 1:39:07
Speaker 1: or whatever there. It just might be sort of plumping
• 1:39:09
Speaker 1: up and then pushing out. That's what I was. That's
• 1:39:13
Speaker 1: that's another way to get shot out. It's just pimple popping.
• 1:39:16
Speaker 1: So that's how you guys might top was for we
• 1:39:18
Speaker 1: one time got a moose. We were twenty miles were
• 1:39:23
Speaker 1: we flew in on the raft trips. We flew in
• 1:39:26
Speaker 1: like flew off the highway up twenty miles up the
• 1:39:29
Speaker 1: river in order to then float back to the highway.
• 1:39:31
Speaker 1: This is up in Alaska and right where we landed
• 1:39:35
Speaker 1: the furthest point we got from any I mean, you're
• 1:39:37
Speaker 1: nowhere near any kind of permanent structures. We killed the
• 1:39:40
Speaker 1: moose that someone had shot in the butt with a
• 1:39:42
Speaker 1: shotgun long ago. It's all healed up in the air.
• 1:39:47
Speaker 1: But all these shotgun pelts I pictured him, you know,
• 1:39:49
Speaker 1: they moved quite a distance throughout the life. I pictured
• 1:39:52
Speaker 1: him getting into someone's garden or something. Was very small.
• 1:39:56
Speaker 1: It looked like seven and a half or eight shots
• 1:39:58
Speaker 1: all over under his skin and oh that's gross, was
• 1:40:01
Speaker 1: it all? It was like, yeah, it was totally healed up.
• 1:40:06
Speaker 1: That's totally healed up. And it was just like you
• 1:40:08
Speaker 1: could just see it, you know, that meniscus, like not
• 1:40:10
Speaker 1: a meniscus, but like that what you call it man
• 1:40:14
Speaker 1: like the like right under the hide it's kind of
• 1:40:16
Speaker 1: sticky whatever that like the when you pull the hide away,
• 1:40:20
Speaker 1: it's sticky, right, yeah, like the fascia. It was just
• 1:40:23
Speaker 1: like the babies were just in there and they were
• 1:40:25
Speaker 1: kind of like healed up in there a little bit,
• 1:40:27
Speaker 1: and the hide didn't have any kind of there's like
• 1:40:29
Speaker 1: a discoloration on the hide, but the holes and the
• 1:40:33
Speaker 1: hide were gone. Wonder giving it like the get out
• 1:40:36
Speaker 1: of here, get out of the old Ryan Callahan, smell
• 1:40:39
Speaker 1: me now, like smell me now, Mr. Now. It seems
• 1:40:42
Speaker 1: like a real Alaskan move to shoot a moose in
• 1:40:45
Speaker 1: the ass with bird shot to get it out of
• 1:40:47
Speaker 1: your garden. Should you hit another one, Yoannie? Yeah, I
• 1:40:51
Speaker 1: think we got one more time for one more? Um,
• 1:40:57
Speaker 1: I just found one I kind of liked we could
• 1:40:59
Speaker 1: answer he had to choose one antler game recipe to
• 1:41:04
Speaker 1: help introduce kids to wild game. What would it be?
• 1:41:07
Speaker 1: And why? Oh? I know exactly. It's tricky. I was
• 1:41:13
Speaker 1: just thinking about it's tricky because my first thought was
• 1:41:15
Speaker 1: full to just be freaking taco night man, because me
• 1:41:18
Speaker 1: can serve regular old American tacos with ground up cat
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: meat in it and it's like sweet tacos. But that's
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: not necessarily helping introduce your kids to wild game. Maybe
• 1:41:30
Speaker 1: the idea of it because you can feed them a
• 1:41:33
Speaker 1: beef taco and say, yeah, man, you're eating elk, and
• 1:41:35
Speaker 1: the kids are like, great, I'm eating elk. So they're
• 1:41:37
Speaker 1: okay with the idea. But I think it's guy if
• 1:41:40
Speaker 1: you're actually yeah, exactly. So if you're actually sort of
• 1:41:43
Speaker 1: like trying to be like, hey, this is what wild
• 1:41:46
Speaker 1: game tastes like, I think you're gonna have to be
• 1:41:48
Speaker 1: a little more nuanced and sort of pick something that
• 1:41:51
Speaker 1: is wild gaming tastes like wild game. You could pick
• 1:41:54
Speaker 1: it out as wild game, yet the kids are gonna
• 1:41:56
Speaker 1: like it. The other evening, I served just half and
• 1:42:00
Speaker 1: to have a very small, like bottom round roast off
• 1:42:03
Speaker 1: of an antelope. It wasn't gonna be enough meat. So
• 1:42:06
Speaker 1: we also had two white tailed dope tender loins, and
• 1:42:11
Speaker 1: I can tell you that those it was all sliced
• 1:42:13
Speaker 1: up just it had been done like we do the
• 1:42:15
Speaker 1: perfect roast, which you can find in the Metator Wild
• 1:42:19
Speaker 1: Game Cookbook and the recipe there how to make the
• 1:42:21
Speaker 1: perfect roast. I cooked all three of those pieces the
• 1:42:24
Speaker 1: same way, steer them up alvoil, salt and pepper, finished
• 1:42:26
Speaker 1: them in the oven, sliced them. I yanked him at
• 1:42:31
Speaker 1: like ish, that's no no man. Once I let them rest,
• 1:42:39
Speaker 1: they rise eight degrees and then their money. Anyways, that
• 1:42:44
Speaker 1: I put a little bit of each on everybody's plates,
• 1:42:47
Speaker 1: and it didn't take them along to be like to
• 1:42:50
Speaker 1: know that the one is a little bit smaller and rounder.
• 1:42:52
Speaker 1: That was the good eating one, right, So oh yeah,
• 1:42:56
Speaker 1: they're like all over that tenderloin the bottom round out off.
• 1:43:00
Speaker 1: The antelope was awesome too, but it just didn't have
• 1:43:03
Speaker 1: that melt in your mouth noss of that tender loins.
• 1:43:07
Speaker 1: So I don't know I'd go with that man, because
• 1:43:09
Speaker 1: you definitely know you you can taste that you're eating
• 1:43:11
Speaker 1: wild game. It's got salt and pepper on it, that's it.
• 1:43:15
Speaker 1: But it's good. It's really good to go to the
• 1:43:17
Speaker 1: prime cut, I guess is my simple prime cut. I
• 1:43:20
Speaker 1: put up a thing on Instagram about this, but not
• 1:43:24
Speaker 1: long ago, I had some Mountain lion tender loins and
• 1:43:28
Speaker 1: I did like how we I did like like doing
• 1:43:31
Speaker 1: the perfect roast as describing the Mediator Fishing Game cookbook,
• 1:43:33
Speaker 1: which is available now. Um seared them, seasoned them, salt
• 1:43:38
Speaker 1: and pepper, seared him, fired into my oven. But I
• 1:43:40
Speaker 1: was kind of running a little bit behind schedule, and
• 1:43:43
Speaker 1: like with little kids, and you gotta get the show
• 1:43:44
Speaker 1: on the road, right because people got up, Yeah, they
• 1:43:46
Speaker 1: want to time to mess around. You gotta get them
• 1:43:48
Speaker 1: to bed. So I pulled him out. I was kind
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: of trying to rush things, pull him out, and you
• 1:43:52
Speaker 1: can't ey mountain land rare. You gotta cook it, you
• 1:43:54
Speaker 1: gotta you know, you gotta cook it to one sixty
• 1:43:57
Speaker 1: pull it out. And I was like, damn it. It
• 1:43:59
Speaker 1: wasn't hold it too quick still a little you know,
• 1:44:02
Speaker 1: you don't want to explain that to your wife? Did everybody?
• 1:44:04
Speaker 1: The kids go all got trick nosis? So uh, I
• 1:44:08
Speaker 1: had a bottle. I was like, how am I gonna
• 1:44:10
Speaker 1: get this done? Like instantaneously? Because once I made I
• 1:44:13
Speaker 1: I was trying to roll and I'm like, man, you
• 1:44:15
Speaker 1: shouldn't roll it, you know. And we had mild We
• 1:44:18
Speaker 1: had mild barbecue sauce um in the fridge, a bottle
• 1:44:23
Speaker 1: of mild barbecue sauce in the fridge, and I just
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: put like a few gloves of that where I had
• 1:44:28
Speaker 1: a quarter inch of barbecue sauce in the bottom of
• 1:44:30
Speaker 1: the same skillet that I had seared it in, and
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: I put those slices and just simmered them in barbecue sauce.
• 1:44:37
Speaker 1: Because I'm just trying to get it done and get
• 1:44:39
Speaker 1: everybody fed. Uh. Man, they loved it, loved it. But
• 1:44:45
Speaker 1: my kids have eating so much stuff. They don't even
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: it doesn't register. You could tell them that they don't
• 1:44:50
Speaker 1: have any of that. They don't have the apprehension because
• 1:44:52
Speaker 1: they never had the luxury of addition, say the luxury
• 1:44:56
Speaker 1: they've they've always had the lugs you of just like
• 1:44:58
Speaker 1: eating everything, So they don't. They don't. They're not suspicious
• 1:45:02
Speaker 1: of anything. They wouldn't know, Like you could tell him
• 1:45:05
Speaker 1: the craziest thing in the world and they wouldn't know
• 1:45:06
Speaker 1: to think it was weird. So it's not a So
• 1:45:09
Speaker 1: it's not like your overcoming prejudice. But they that was
• 1:45:12
Speaker 1: a dish they loved and it makes me think of
• 1:45:14
Speaker 1: remember that BlackBerry dish I cooked a little bit which
• 1:45:17
Speaker 1: had that sauce that was made out of base like
• 1:45:19
Speaker 1: melted brown sugar and you serve it over rice. Yeah,
• 1:45:22
Speaker 1: I believe we call it meat meat candy. Dude. Kids
• 1:45:26
Speaker 1: love that dish. Man, we put that on the website
• 1:45:29
Speaker 1: at some point in time. I don't think it's still there.
• 1:45:31
Speaker 1: We need to revamp that recipe. Yeah, it's basically like
• 1:45:35
Speaker 1: making Mongolian beef. Um. You know that's my brother was
• 1:45:39
Speaker 1: trying to make. My brother, who came up with the recipe,
• 1:45:41
Speaker 1: was like messing around, trying to make like some dish
• 1:45:44
Speaker 1: from p F Changs or something. His kids, His kids
• 1:45:49
Speaker 1: got hot on the McDonald's and uh, he started cooking
• 1:45:52
Speaker 1: hall of it, just like how they make chicken McNuggets,
• 1:45:54
Speaker 1: and they and they thought they were eating chicken McNuggets. Wow, dude,
• 1:45:59
Speaker 1: speaking some good fried fish um I had somehow ended
• 1:46:03
Speaker 1: up with. I don't know if it was from a
• 1:46:04
Speaker 1: shoe that we did it, if you gave it to me,
• 1:46:06
Speaker 1: but the Tony Seas standard fish bredding. I ran out
• 1:46:11
Speaker 1: of just my whatever, you know, seasoned flower that I
• 1:46:14
Speaker 1: normally have, and I didn't have any corner. I saw
• 1:46:16
Speaker 1: the box sitting there and so I went with that
• 1:46:18
Speaker 1: and man, just seasoned just enough but not too much.
• 1:46:22
Speaker 1: I was really impressed. That's why it pisces me off.
• 1:46:25
Speaker 1: And you talk up Old Bay, dude. I'm a big
• 1:46:29
Speaker 1: fan of Old Day myself. You're from the West. They're
• 1:46:33
Speaker 1: too two separate seasonings. I'm not saying I view it
• 1:46:37
Speaker 1: like you're an old I view it like when it
• 1:46:39
Speaker 1: comes to like seasonings that you can buy any grocery
• 1:46:43
Speaker 1: store in America. There's two kinds of people. There's kinds
• 1:46:46
Speaker 1: of people who think you can lump everyone into two categories. Yeah,
• 1:46:51
Speaker 1: there's two kinds of people. Man, what if you're feeling
• 1:46:54
Speaker 1: like you want to be Authentico Spanish or Mexican. What
• 1:46:58
Speaker 1: if you want that flavor you can't. You're not getting
• 1:47:01
Speaker 1: that if I'm doing that. And you know what, No,
• 1:47:04
Speaker 1: it's not the only thing I eat. I'm just saying,
• 1:47:06
Speaker 1: like we it was framed up as either or. I
• 1:47:10
Speaker 1: think it was a listener question that might have been.
• 1:47:12
Speaker 1: But I'm not falling into that trap. Okay, well, when
• 1:47:15
Speaker 1: we got that, here's the thing we've gotten that argument
• 1:47:19
Speaker 1: about Tony C's. Someone from the Tony C's family say,
• 1:47:24
Speaker 1: I everybody Wright said you say this, and I talked
• 1:47:28
Speaker 1: aboutfore for something for a reason I don't understand. When
• 1:47:30
Speaker 1: I was in college, you're called uncle times. I have
• 1:47:32
Speaker 1: no idea why they sent me a care package and
• 1:47:37
Speaker 1: in it, uh and it was like a marinade, and
• 1:47:41
Speaker 1: I cook some golden eyed ducks out of that marinade.
• 1:47:44
Speaker 1: M all right, he said they were so. But yeah,
• 1:47:50
  Speaker 1: it's a good it's a good bredding. Yeah, it's a
• 1:47:52
Speaker 1: lot more fun than you know. You really ought to
• 1:47:54
Speaker 1: learn how to make your own, and I know what
• 1:47:55
  Speaker 1: you do, but it's it's like, for there's a lot
• 1:47:57
Speaker 1: of good breadings out there. Yeah, I don't know. I
• 1:48:00
Speaker 1: got a lot of times. A lot of times those
• 1:48:02
Speaker 1: store bought ones have that real like I'm gonna call
• 1:48:05
Speaker 1: it MSG flavor, but I don't know if that's what
• 1:48:08
Speaker 1: I'm saying. Maybe they're just over salty, is what I'm
• 1:48:10
Speaker 1: trying to get at. But I just feel like you're
• 1:48:12
  Speaker 1: like I can taste something that I don't like, it's
• 1:48:15
Speaker 1: just too much. Usually where I felt like this one,
• 1:48:18
Speaker 1: I was like, wow, I was pleasantly surprised that they
• 1:48:20
Speaker 1: did had an overseasoned and over salt. You know what
• 1:48:23
Speaker 1: my old man bought by the case. I didn't have
• 1:48:25
Speaker 1: fried fish that wasn't made in this season. He bought
• 1:48:29
Speaker 1: frying magic. M I remember that stuff, blue box. He
• 1:48:33
Speaker 1: bought frying magic by the case. And he had a
• 1:48:36
Speaker 1: cupboard in the garage where he kept peanut oil and
• 1:48:40
Speaker 1: frying magic and paper towels. It was like his stash.
• 1:48:45
Speaker 1: When your mom did those you're describing how she used
• 1:48:48
Speaker 1: to do chicken thighs and like she do them in
• 1:48:52
Speaker 1: the pan and then finish them in the oven very good.
• 1:48:54
Speaker 1: And you do in squirrels good that way. Yeah, And
• 1:48:56
Speaker 1: I was thinking that my that magic great. Okay, it
• 1:49:01
Speaker 1: was okay, because I want to say, wasn't there a
• 1:49:03
Speaker 1: product called like shaking bake people did the same exact
• 1:49:06
Speaker 1: recipe with. Yeah, she would work it up, and I
• 1:49:08
Speaker 1: should call her to double check. But I feel like
• 1:49:10
Speaker 1: she would work it up with frying magic and she
• 1:49:13
Speaker 1: do squirrel same way, same breading started the pan. Then
• 1:49:19
Speaker 1: she'd take a big sheet pan and line up with
• 1:49:21
Speaker 1: foil and put all these squirrel eggs on there and
• 1:49:24
Speaker 1: and throw it in the oven. And you can cover
• 1:49:26
Speaker 1: it too. That's Kevin Murphy. He covers it and then
• 1:49:29
Speaker 1: cooks it on three help tenderize it, little moist heat.
• 1:49:33
Speaker 1: M hm hm. You guys got anything to add to
• 1:49:38
Speaker 1: the introductory while a game? I'm on dearline of thought,
• 1:49:43
Speaker 1: primal cuts nice and tender, just like keep them as
• 1:49:46
Speaker 1: plain as possible, but season them up just a touch. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
• 1:49:50
Speaker 1: because like don't let him get the ship and catch
• 1:49:52
Speaker 1: up man, oh my old man had to We were
• 1:49:55
Speaker 1: allowed to dip dear heart and catch up. We couldn't
• 1:49:58
Speaker 1: dip normal dear meat and catch up. Yeah, we definitely
• 1:50:01
Speaker 1: have like a this is like okay catch up and
• 1:50:04
Speaker 1: mayo meal. For some reason, my kids freaking they're they're
• 1:50:07
Speaker 1: they're just as happy dipping in mayo as they aren't
• 1:50:09
Speaker 1: catch up. But we definitely like run rulves like no,
• 1:50:12
Speaker 1: this one, No, he's just he's just gonna eat them.
• 1:50:14
Speaker 1: When I was a kid, I just put cash up
• 1:50:16
Speaker 1: on everything. It doesn't matter. You've grown out that, but
• 1:50:22
Speaker 1: you've grown out of it. Oh Yeah, I still like
• 1:50:25
  Speaker 1: catch up quite a bit, but I definitely don't don't
• 1:50:28
Speaker 1: put it on my dear sticks. Yeah. I have another
• 1:50:30
Speaker 1: buddy who um I got it with for quite a
• 1:50:33
Speaker 1: few years, and uh, I was just the guy that
• 1:50:35
Speaker 1: would often cook and camp when there was no cook
• 1:50:38
Speaker 1: and clients were out or whatever, and we'd just be
• 1:50:40
Speaker 1: hanging out and oftentimes I would spend a bit of
• 1:50:43
Speaker 1: time cooking up something and then he'd sit down and
• 1:50:46
Speaker 1: bust up the giant catchup bottle and just over the
• 1:50:49
Speaker 1: whole plate. Man, it kind of would hurt my heart
• 1:50:51
Speaker 1: a little bit. You know. I'm like, I guess if
