Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The grateful thing.
- 0:01Speaker 2: The word grateful gratitude is tough for me because sometimes
- 0:05Speaker 2: again I'm like, but I don't know if I necessarily
- 0:07Speaker 2: feel grateful in this moment. For that, so I've shifted
- 0:10Speaker 2: it to what good happened today?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Hello, Hello Emily, A body here with a surprise episode
- 0:30Speaker 3: for your Wednesday morning if you're listening to this in
- 0:33Speaker 3: real time. Number three fourteen from Hurdle a Wellness a
- 0:37Speaker 3: focused podcast where I talk to inspirational people about everything
- 0:41Speaker 3: from their highest ties and toughest moments to essential tips
- 0:44Speaker 3: on how to live a healthier, happier, more motivated life.
- 0:49Speaker 3: We all go through our fair share of hurdles. My
- 0:52Speaker 3: goal through these discussions is to empower you to better
- 0:54Speaker 3: navigate yours and move with intention so that you can
- 0:58Speaker 3: stride towards your own big potential and of course.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Have some fun along the way.
- 1:04Speaker 3: For number three fourteen, I am bringing you my conversation
- 1:08Speaker 3: with Katie hoff Anderson. You may know and love her
- 1:11Speaker 3: from her time in the pool. She's a two time Olympian,
- 1:15Speaker 3: three time medalist. In these days, she spends her time
- 1:19Speaker 3: as a speaker and co host of her new podcast
- 1:22Speaker 3: called Unfiltered Waters. I'll go ahead and make sure to
- 1:26Speaker 3: link that in the show notes. Now we have the
- 1:28Speaker 3: opportunity to link at Athleta's Power of She Hub in Paris.
- 1:32Speaker 3: This is Katie's second appearance on the show, and it
- 1:35Speaker 3: was such a great opportunity to connect on what's the latest,
- 1:39Speaker 3: what's going on with her. She was out in Paris
- 1:42Speaker 3: working with Yahoo Sports and with Team USA as a creator.
- 1:46Speaker 3: She tells us what that was like, and she also
- 1:48Speaker 3: gets real about how the transition has been for her,
- 1:51Speaker 3: going from a competing athlete to being.
- 1:54Speaker 1: On the other side.
- 1:55Speaker 3: She also talks to us about what she's been doing
- 1:57Speaker 3: since we last chatted for the show and scales her
- 2:00Speaker 3: experience going through the Hoffmann process, which I found to
- 2:04Speaker 3: be super, super interesting. I have so much content from
- 2:08Speaker 3: my time in Paris that I want to make sure
- 2:10Speaker 3: hits the feed in some sort of reasonable timeframe, which
- 2:14Speaker 3: is why you're getting these special bonus episodes. I promise
- 2:18Speaker 3: you there's new stuff being made, there are emails flying,
- 2:21Speaker 3: interviews happening, and so I just want to make sure
- 2:23Speaker 3: you know that I'm always thinking of how I can
- 2:27Speaker 3: best serve all of you. Now, recently, I made the
- 2:30Speaker 3: shift to allowing email listener questions for the five minute
- 2:34Speaker 3: Friday segment. So if you have a question that you
- 2:36Speaker 3: want to answered on the show, send it over email
- 2:38Speaker 3: to Hello at Hurdle dot us and maybe you'll hear
- 2:42Speaker 3: an answer in an upcoming episode. Make sure you're following
- 2:45Speaker 3: Hurdle on social it's at Hurdle Podcast. I am over
- 2:48Speaker 3: at Emily a Body And with that, let's get to it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Today.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I have the pleasure of sitting down with Katie hoff Anderson.
- 3:03Speaker 1: How are we doing? We are doing great.
- 3:06Speaker 2: We are let's see five days in and eight more
- 3:09Speaker 2: days to go, and I feel like I've done like
- 3:12Speaker 2: two weeks worth of stuff, which is awesome.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so talk to me about what the stuff is,
- 3:17Speaker 3: what's going on right now.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So I'm here with the USOPC. They have a Team
- 3:22Speaker 2: USA Creators Program, which I think, first of all, is incredible.
- 3:26Speaker 2: It's the first time and they've ever done it, and
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think it's only going to bring just awareness to
- 3:30Speaker 2: the sports. So there's people that have nothing to do
- 3:34Speaker 2: with the sports that are here but just have a
- 3:35Speaker 2: huge engagement in following. And so we've been doing like
- 3:38Speaker 2: TikTok dances. We've been doing kind of recaps behind the scenes,
- 3:42Speaker 2: so that's been really fun. And then I'm also here
- 3:45Speaker 2: with Yahoo Sports for the swimming side of things, so
- 3:47Speaker 2: we've been doing recaps every night, doing it again behind
- 3:51Speaker 2: the scenes, and then also doing just some general content
- 3:54Speaker 2: for my podcasts with Missy Franklin, which is unfiltered Waters.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You have nothing going on.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm laying in bed all day, Oh my god, which
- 4:03Speaker 3: like probably wouldn't even be that bad bad because it's Paris.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I know, it is nice. Life is good, life is good.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:09Speaker 3: What's so interesting to me is that there's so many
- 4:12Speaker 3: different things going on, but yet you still seem like
- 4:16Speaker 3: you've got it together.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Kate.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm kind of like embracing the chaos. That has
- 4:21Speaker 2: just been my model the whole time. But yeah, people
- 4:24Speaker 2: are like, oh my god, looks like you're doing so much,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and it's like, well, yeah, because we're in Paris and
- 4:28Speaker 2: there's I just keep saying yes, you know, there's said
- 4:31Speaker 2: yes you messaged me, and I was like, yes, absolutely,
- 4:34Speaker 2: So I think I mean, how often are the Olympics
- 4:36Speaker 2: there every four years, and so I just think this
- 4:38Speaker 2: is the time to seize it and do it, and
- 4:41Speaker 2: it's been so much fun so far.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You mentioned working with Yahoo obviously or maybe not obviously.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I'm sure it will be in the intro to this podcast.
- 4:48Speaker 3: But two time Olympian, three time medallist, how does it
- 4:51Speaker 3: feel sixteen years later to be on this side of things?
- 4:55Speaker 1: It feels good?
- 4:57Speaker 2: And I wasn't sure if I was going to say that,
- 4:59Speaker 2: so obviously kind of went into this Olympics like okay,
- 5:02Speaker 2: like like, yeah, you don't know, right, You don't know
- 5:04Speaker 2: till you get here. You don't know to your sitting
- 5:06Speaker 2: at finals watching your first I mean, my first swimming
- 5:09Speaker 2: final session since I competed in Beijing in two thousand
- 5:12Speaker 2: and eight, So there's no way to really prepare for that.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Like I was talking with my therapist the.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Day before I flew out and he's like, just sit
- 5:20Speaker 2: with it however you feel you feel.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, but that's like.
- 5:23Speaker 2: A very anxious producing thing to be on the plane,
- 5:27Speaker 2: like okay, Like I don't know what I'm gonna feel.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Am I gonna have an emotional breakdown? Am I gonna cry?
- 5:33Speaker 2: I actually had tears of joy, huh, which was really
- 5:38Speaker 2: It just tells me I was ready to come back,
- 5:40Speaker 2: and people listening probably like six they're like sixteen years. Yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but there just was so much work that has gone
- 5:46Speaker 2: into this, and yeah, I have my I would say
- 5:49Speaker 2: I've been saying five percent. I've been having my five
- 5:51Speaker 2: percent of moments where I'm like, ah, like I feel
- 5:52Speaker 2: a pain here or poll there. But ninety five percent
- 5:56Speaker 2: is like okay, like I feel really grateful to be
- 5:59Speaker 2: here and doing what I'm And.
- 6:00Speaker 3: It's really impressive to hear about the work that you
- 6:02Speaker 3: did to prepare for this moment, recognizing what was in
- 6:07Speaker 3: your control.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, right, because there was only so much.
- 6:09Speaker 3: That you could do to visualize what it would look
- 6:12Speaker 3: like for you to be back in that space, to
- 6:15Speaker 3: think about how you could feel, and then getting here
- 6:19Speaker 3: and allowing yourself to let whatever came up come up.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, which is yeah, just I mean I'm saying that, like, oh,
- 6:26Speaker 2: just whatever, I feel feel like, there's just been there's
- 6:28Speaker 2: a lot of I actually feel like the week before leaving,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I had some meltdowns, Like I just the anticipation of
- 6:36Speaker 2: like the unknown is obviously stressful for anybody, But I
- 6:40Speaker 2: think once I got on the plane, I was like, okay, Okay,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I think we're good.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think we're good.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And then I found myself having more happy tears than
- 6:49Speaker 2: sad tears here, which has been really neat to see.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And I think part of it is because my podcast,
- 6:55Speaker 2: like getting to talk to the majority of the athletes
- 6:57Speaker 2: that you're watching right now, at least on the swimming side,
- 7:00Speaker 2: has helped me feel so connected. So I'm not really
- 7:03Speaker 2: thinking about like my own stuff or things like that.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'm more like, I'm more getting emotional for the athletes
- 7:09Speaker 2: because I know what's happening behind the scenes and what
- 7:11Speaker 2: they're feeling and all of that.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, can you talk us through a little bit for
- 7:15Speaker 3: those that may not be familiar with your story where
- 7:18Speaker 3: some of those emotions are coming from.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah. So I made my first team in two thousand
- 7:23Speaker 2: and four, like a little baby fifteen year old, and
- 7:26Speaker 2: my first games were not fun, I mean, just very overwhelming,
- 7:31Speaker 2: felt like I was watching myself the whole time and
- 7:34Speaker 2: didn't have a successful Olympic Games and so like didn't
- 7:37Speaker 2: make the final and there was just a lot of
- 7:39Speaker 2: pressure on me like everybody, but it.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Just didn't go well.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And then two thousand and eight, I up the ante again,
- 7:46Speaker 2: made six events, five individual one relay and two thousand
- 7:51Speaker 2: and eight was the Games of Michael Phelps, and so
- 7:53Speaker 2: a lot of the expectations on me were pinned on
- 7:57Speaker 2: me as like the female Phelps, which I I didn't
- 8:00Speaker 2: ask for it obviously an honor, but I wasn't going
- 8:02Speaker 2: for eight gold medals. And so I think the thing
- 8:05Speaker 2: that really gets me right now is I came away
- 8:08Speaker 2: from those Games with three medals, one silver and two bronze,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and I didn't want a gold medal. That's, let's face it.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Like everyone can say like, yes, like we want metals,
- 8:17Speaker 2: but like you're gunning for gold, like that is the goal.
- 8:20Speaker 2: And so when that doesn't happen, obviously you're disappointed, and that.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Will those feelings will never go away of that.
- 8:28Speaker 2: But I've more come to terms with them, come to
- 8:30Speaker 2: peace with it, I think now watching you know, watching
- 8:34Speaker 2: someone like Reagan Smith even two nights ago.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You know, she was here in Tokyo.
- 8:39Speaker 2: She got a bronze, she got a silver, and then
- 8:41Speaker 2: she broke the world record at Charles and the hunter backstroke,
- 8:43Speaker 2: and then she got touched out for a gold medal,
- 8:46Speaker 2: and so like watching those things, I'm just like wanting
- 8:49Speaker 2: so badly for these people to get to where I
- 8:53Speaker 2: know they want to because I know exactly what that
- 8:55Speaker 2: feels like.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's completely understandable, right that you don't work hard
- 9:01Speaker 3: for things not to go as you'd hoped.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah, no one does.
- 9:04Speaker 3: In reality, you then get to decide what you do
- 9:07Speaker 3: when that happens, right, And that choice at times might
- 9:10Speaker 3: feel easier than others when you are working on something
- 9:13Speaker 3: that happens once every four years.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a limited edition opportunity.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there's not you people ask like, oh my gosh,
- 9:22Speaker 2: like how does it feel, you know, is it so amazing?
- 9:25Speaker 1: And the answer is yes.
- 9:27Speaker 2: But I think for a lot of these athletes, I've
- 9:29Speaker 2: actually been able to understand being here and watching why
- 9:33Speaker 2: people don't get it, because I'm sitting here and I'm like,
- 9:36Speaker 2: oh my gosh, there's such a highlight.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Reel like it, and it is.
- 9:39Speaker 2: It's so amazing to be an Olympian, but it's so
- 9:41Speaker 2: hard to manage everything, the logistics, the back and forth,
- 9:45Speaker 2: to the pool, to the venues, the food that like,
- 9:48Speaker 2: all of those things. And so I think the pressure
- 9:52Speaker 2: is I mean, I would say the highest of really
- 9:54Speaker 2: any you know, at least football and basketball it's like
- 9:57Speaker 2: once a year, you know, and so thinking if you
- 10:00Speaker 2: think of that every four years, it can be very
- 10:03Speaker 2: hard to manage. Yeah, and so I just like, I
- 10:06Speaker 2: feel like I'm on pins and needles. I don't know
- 10:08Speaker 2: how people watch.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It's way harder to watch. Sometimes it's challenging.
- 10:12Speaker 3: It's really challenging for me in the bar down the
- 10:14Speaker 3: street cheering. I will tell you I'm having a really
- 10:17Speaker 3: hard time down there. But what I also will say
- 10:21Speaker 3: is knowing what it could be like to come in first,
- 10:26Speaker 3: to accomplish that goal and then coming up short. Clearly,
- 10:29Speaker 3: that's not a feeling that just happens. Yes, it happens
- 10:31Speaker 3: at that point in time, but there are going to
- 10:33Speaker 3: be other things in life where you come up short
- 10:35Speaker 3: and you have to have this talk with yourself to
- 10:38Speaker 3: help yourself get back up after that difficult moment. What
- 10:41Speaker 3: have strategies been like for you in the past that
- 10:44Speaker 3: you've used maybe to yes, deal with that Olympic disappointment,
- 10:48Speaker 3: but then now in your life today to navigate the
- 10:51Speaker 3: hurdles as they come.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's what we talked about before, is
- 10:56Speaker 2: just like letting yourself feel and not my therapist says yourself.
- 11:00Speaker 2: He's like, that's shooting all over yourself, which I'm like,
- 11:03Speaker 2: that's funny say that I'm.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Eleven years old.
- 11:08Speaker 2: But no, I think for me that has been the
- 11:11Speaker 2: shift of just I place so much judgment on how
- 11:15Speaker 2: I was feeling, like, oh, I shouldn't feel this way,
- 11:17Speaker 2: I shouldn't feel that way. It's like no, no, no,
- 11:19Speaker 2: Like your emotions are gonna come, Sit with them, don't
- 11:22Speaker 2: try to just push them down or push them aside,
- 11:24Speaker 2: like they're your emotions for a reason, and then kind
- 11:27Speaker 2: of take a step back and analyze why that's happening.
- 11:30Speaker 2: And it just gives you so much information about yourself.
- 11:33Speaker 2: What patterns are am I bringing in here and there?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Right?
- 11:36Speaker 2: And I think that's something in the past couple of
- 11:38Speaker 2: years I've been able to do a really good job of,
- 11:41Speaker 2: which is.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Why I'm here.
- 11:43Speaker 2: You know, I wouldn't be here if I hadn't kind
- 11:45Speaker 2: of figured out or unlocked that a little bit. And
- 11:48Speaker 2: I think that's the piece where people get stuck and
- 11:50Speaker 2: can't overcome a hurdle. Is they just they just kind
- 11:53Speaker 2: of push it down and don't try to just be like, oh, huh, ok.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Katie, what's the unlock it's the unlocke. Well you're saying
- 12:01Speaker 3: like I've locked it. I'm like, what's the unlock for
- 12:03Speaker 3: those that are trying to unlock it?
- 12:04Speaker 2: I mean the unlock for me was that I am
- 12:09Speaker 2: good enough to be here. You know, I think for
- 12:12Speaker 2: so long I just was like Okay, well, like it
- 12:14Speaker 2: didn't go exactly how I wanted, and so I'm just
- 12:16Speaker 2: going to move on and like no one cares, and
- 12:20Speaker 2: it's like the total opposite. It's just the energy that
- 12:24Speaker 2: I'm bringing to it.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Like, I had this moment last year and I said
- 12:28Speaker 2: to my husband, I was like, oh my gosh, like
- 12:30Speaker 2: I just feel like everyone's like so much more like respectful.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And he was like, no, they've always been like that.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You were just not yourself, Like you were just not
- 12:38Speaker 2: accepting of it and putting out that energy is like
- 12:41Speaker 2: nothing's changed about everybody else.
- 12:43Speaker 1: You're the one it's changed. Energy attracts like energy, yes, period.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah. So whether we're talking about a scenario like this,
- 12:50Speaker 3: you're walking down the street, you're going to a coffee shop,
- 12:52Speaker 3: you're showing up at your office, You're going to be
- 12:55Speaker 3: met with what you bring exactly hard stop. So for
- 12:58Speaker 3: you now to be in this place where you're not
- 12:59Speaker 3: accepting of what happened, but now you're understanding how to
- 13:02Speaker 3: make your day to day work for you.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 3: It's a really special opportunity and a beautiful place to
- 13:07Speaker 3: be in.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and I feel like, for the first time of
- 13:10Speaker 2: my life, I've been able to actually sit there for
- 13:12Speaker 2: a second and recognize it.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I still have work to do on that.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Of just like we all do right, well the box,
- 13:17Speaker 2: check the box, go go, go, go go, But I
- 13:19Speaker 2: think I've been able to actually have moments here where
- 13:21Speaker 2: I'm like, wow, I did that. You know, I did this,
- 13:24Speaker 2: and these things are happening because I've made a shift,
- 13:27Speaker 2: because I've put it out there, because I've said yes
- 13:29Speaker 2: to everything.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But that's all me.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And it feels really like even uncomfortable to kind of
- 13:35Speaker 2: say that now. But I genuinely over the last couple
- 13:38Speaker 2: of days have been like dang, like cool, Like I'm
- 13:41Speaker 2: in a good spot.
- 13:42Speaker 1: You're in a good spot.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Yea, you're in a good spot. You know what I
- 13:44Speaker 3: call this? But the bet on your celf era, oh yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 3: I am you love to hear.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I am deep. I'm not even a huge Tailor Swift fan.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I will not say I'm not a Tailor Swift fan,
- 13:55Speaker 3: but I'm not like a swiftie, you know, I'm more
- 13:57Speaker 3: of a belief But I'm like, oh wow, okay, yeah, okay,
- 14:00Speaker 3: that was a statement.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm not not a Taylor Swift fan, but I wouldn't.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I will say that, Like obviously, when you say the
- 14:06Speaker 3: word era, I think it's automatically equivalent with Taylor Swift.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Now with that said, I just noticed for myself and
- 14:13Speaker 3: through the work that I've done with my coach, that
- 14:15Speaker 3: the beautiful things that happen when you start to bet
- 14:18Speaker 3: on yourself are remarkable. And when you start to say
- 14:23Speaker 3: like I am worthy of this, I am deserving of
- 14:25Speaker 3: this again, energy attracts like energy, and other people feel
- 14:28Speaker 3: that way about you as well. And so, for instance,
- 14:31Speaker 3: like showing up to Paris, I was like, I'm going
- 14:33Speaker 3: to come here no matter what, and then really awesome
- 14:36Speaker 3: stuff started to happen. Yeah, and we're sitting here right
- 14:38Speaker 3: now in this beautiful space. And so I truly believe
- 14:41Speaker 3: that you never regret betting on yourself, and when you
- 14:44Speaker 3: do again, really awesome things are going to happen, are
- 14:46Speaker 3: bound to happen. I love what you said before about
- 14:49Speaker 3: how you feel so much pressure, not just in maybe.
- 14:52Speaker 1: What you're doing now, but when you were in the
- 14:54Speaker 1: pool as well.
- 14:55Speaker 3: And I think that it's safe to say that a
- 14:57Speaker 3: large part of the reason why so many yourself included,
- 15:00Speaker 3: are feeling so much pressure is because the camera's always on. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 3: whether or not you are someone that actually stands in
- 15:05Speaker 3: front of a real camera for work, or you're simply
- 15:09Speaker 3: walking down the street and going to grab a coffee,
- 15:11Speaker 3: you're seeing someone do something like you, and you're thinking
- 15:14Speaker 3: that it's better, or it's different, or I should that
- 15:16Speaker 3: should word again do it some kind of way, and
- 15:19Speaker 3: that really intensifies what's.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Going on in the day to day. Do you find that.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Your exposure to social media makes you play a little
- 15:26Speaker 3: bit of that comparison game?
- 15:28Speaker 1: For sure. It's interesting because there's two sides of it.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Like my career, oh four OA, Instagram wasn't a thing,
- 15:35Speaker 2: you know it really, I mean, there was like message
- 15:38Speaker 2: boards that's like that's how people like talk crap was
- 15:40Speaker 2: like the message boards, which is wild, yeah, which is
- 15:42Speaker 2: still damaging, but it's not thousands of comments thous things.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And so while that was really nice, sometimes I'm like, dang,
- 15:49Speaker 2: it like I kind of watch I was in that era.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Because it just you know, from a business opportunity.
- 15:54Speaker 2: But yeah, I think the comparison game is tough, and
- 15:58Speaker 2: I do that check a couple times week where I'm like,
- 16:00Speaker 2: am I feeling a certain sadness or feeling a certain
- 16:03Speaker 2: way of comparison? And is it because I'm on social
- 16:06Speaker 2: media right now and I'm scrolling. Because I've always been
- 16:09Speaker 2: an advocate for social media, I've always said, like it
- 16:11Speaker 2: just watching tiktoks at night, like dumb dances like makes
- 16:14Speaker 2: me laugh, you know, it helps me stay connected to friends,
- 16:17Speaker 2: if you know, maybe we don't have time to like
- 16:18Speaker 2: have a full on conversation in a month, you know.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So I love social media, but I have recently been like, huh,
- 16:27Speaker 2: like data noted there, Like am I doing that? I
- 16:30Speaker 2: think it's human nature to compare it just is. But
- 16:33Speaker 2: I think I'm again because I have the awareness and
- 16:37Speaker 2: because I have that kind of like okay, like noted,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I'm able to make sure that I'm kind of just
- 16:42Speaker 2: keeping tabs on it.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I think, yeah, yeah, I mean analyzing your inputs so
- 16:47Speaker 3: you can like understand your output. Yeah, and when you
- 16:49Speaker 3: notice a difference in your output that makes you feel
- 16:51Speaker 3: uncomfortable taking that sense of responsibility and being like this
- 16:55Speaker 3: doesn't serve me, or what is it that's not serving me?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Or what is it that's different? Yeah, I think that
- 17:00Speaker 3: question can be super valuable. What is it that's different
- 17:03Speaker 3: right now that is causing the shift and feeling in
- 17:06Speaker 3: me that maybe I'm not taking stake in, maybe I'm
- 17:09Speaker 3: not paying attention to.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Of like what we were talking about about the importance
- 17:13Speaker 3: of feeling your feelings, like be cognizant of your surroundings
- 17:16Speaker 3: and ask yourself like am I setting myself up for
- 17:19Speaker 3: the best possible scenario?
- 17:20Speaker 1: And if not, like, are you choosing not to? Yeah?
- 17:23Speaker 2: And I also think the other piece of that that
- 17:25Speaker 2: I went even further is like why do I not
- 17:27Speaker 2: have gratitude for my things? You know? And that's probably
- 17:31Speaker 2: the big number, the number one struggle for me right now.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people, but I'm like
- 17:36Speaker 2: what I'm literally I listed off like twenty things I'm doing,
- 17:39Speaker 2: all these things like why in the world am I
- 17:42Speaker 2: not sitting here like crying with joy in this moment?
- 17:45Speaker 2: And those are the times where it then almost forces
- 17:47Speaker 2: me to be like, oh no, but like take a
- 17:49Speaker 2: look at that list that you just and that does
- 17:51Speaker 2: help me kind of move out of it. Yeah, And
- 17:54Speaker 2: so that's another thing that I'm I'm working on. And
- 17:57Speaker 2: the grateful thing, the word grateful gratide tude is tough
- 18:01Speaker 2: for me because sometimes again I'm like, but I don't
- 18:04Speaker 2: know if I necessarily grateful in this moment for that.
- 18:06Speaker 2: So I've shifted it to what good happened today? Like
- 18:09Speaker 2: what can I genuinely say, like what good happened? I
- 18:12Speaker 2: don't have to be grateful for in that moment, which
- 18:14Speaker 2: takes the pressure off. It's just like point again, I'm
- 18:16Speaker 2: just like I need to point it out, like be
- 18:18Speaker 2: aware what goold happened? And like every single day here
- 18:21Speaker 2: I've been able to. I've been doing it here like
- 18:23Speaker 2: as an exercise, like what good happened today? And then
- 18:26Speaker 2: that helps kind of reel me back in from my
- 18:28Speaker 2: downward spiral of whatever I was looking out on social.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, a girlfriend and I that are traveling together.
- 18:33Speaker 3: At the end of each day we talk about the
- 18:34Speaker 3: peach and the pit, like the high and the low
- 18:36Speaker 3: of the day. And it's not so much to bring
- 18:39Speaker 3: attention to the low, but then it goes back to
- 18:41Speaker 3: what we were talking about.
- 18:42Speaker 1: About learning from the low right.
- 18:43Speaker 3: It's like, if this didn't go as I had hoped,
- 18:45Speaker 3: then is there anything that's within my power to make
- 18:48Speaker 3: sure either that doesn't happen again or change that circumstance
- 18:51Speaker 3: for the next day.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, live and learn, period, Live and learn.
- 18:55Speaker 3: For you now, outside of the work that you are
- 18:58Speaker 3: doing in Paris, talk to us a little bit about
- 19:00Speaker 3: what's exciting you, what you're working on.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm really really excited about our podcasts, the
- 19:07Speaker 2: Unfiltered Waters podcast. It's I mean it's very very newly minted.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I just started it in January and just like literally
- 19:14Speaker 2: on a whim, I did this crazy and intensive called
- 19:16Speaker 2: the Hoffmann process. I came out of it and I
- 19:19Speaker 2: was like, you know what, I feel like there's a
- 19:21Speaker 2: need for a female led sporting Yes, starting and swimming
- 19:26Speaker 2: and hoping to move out of it and do all
- 19:28Speaker 2: other sports, but I just feel like to have that
- 19:31Speaker 2: type of energy where it's going, you know, beneath the
- 19:34Speaker 2: athlete into the person. And I was just like, we're
- 19:37Speaker 2: doing it, And obviously asked Missy and she was like yes.
- 19:39Speaker 2: And so it's been a bit as you know, a
- 19:42Speaker 2: learning experience, and I'm like, oh, I just want.
- 19:44Speaker 1: To start a podcast. It's like, hey, do you want
- 19:46Speaker 1: to start a business?
- 19:47Speaker 2: You know, like all the logistics, the editing, all of it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: So I just feel like we're in a really good
- 19:53Speaker 2: spot with it. And so even being being at trials
- 19:56Speaker 2: and having people come up and share how we've been
- 20:00Speaker 2: impacted them and share who's listening and why it's important,
- 20:03Speaker 2: Like I mean, you know, like when you're not in person,
- 20:07Speaker 2: you don't get that. And so we've even gotten here
- 20:09Speaker 2: at the Olympic Games and so it's been very touching.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It's been very motivating, very cup filling to have that.
- 20:16Speaker 2: And then I just feel like I'm really happy with
- 20:19Speaker 2: like where my husband and I are in both of
- 20:20Speaker 2: our careers in our life. We moved to Nashville about
- 20:23Speaker 2: a year and a half ago and it's like the
- 20:24Speaker 2: best community.
- 20:26Speaker 1: We have a million sauna coal plunges.
- 20:28Speaker 2: That's all we do, and just I swear buying a
- 20:31Speaker 2: sauna is the best thing you can do for your
- 20:33Speaker 2: social life because people come over and you can't have
- 20:36Speaker 2: your phones. You're just like, we're going to go through
- 20:38Speaker 2: adversity together. In two hundred and twenty degrees and you
- 20:41Speaker 2: get to know someone on a very deep level. And
- 20:43Speaker 2: so I think that piece has also been really fun
- 20:46Speaker 2: to feel like we have this incredible community of people
- 20:49Speaker 2: around us that think that think very similarly and are
- 20:52Speaker 2: just going after it.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You can't have a sauna or a cold plunge in
- 20:55Speaker 3: your apartment in Brooklyn, like it just doesn't fit.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So sadly, what about you have a balcony. Wouldn't that
- 21:00Speaker 1: be a dream? Wouldn't that be a dream inside? I've
- 21:05Speaker 1: seen people do it. Oh man.
- 21:06Speaker 3: I mean it's not coming in my home because we're
- 21:08Speaker 3: using that space as a recording studio.
- 21:11Speaker 1: But maybe in another time. Okay, it's an option future,
- 21:14Speaker 1: it's a future.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Aspiration for me, it's an aspirational accomplishment. I love the
- 21:19Speaker 3: why not me attitude that you spoke about when you
- 21:22Speaker 3: were talking about starting your podcast. I think as a podcaster,
- 21:24Speaker 3: so often people come to me and they're like, I
- 21:27Speaker 3: want to start a podcast, but like there are so
- 21:29Speaker 3: many podcasts, And your attitude was like, not, I want
- 21:32Speaker 3: to start a podcast, but there are so many podcasts.
- 21:33Speaker 3: You're like, no, I'm going to start a podcast for
- 21:36Speaker 3: someone that has a goal and aspiration regardless of what
- 21:39Speaker 3: it might entail, and they are not quite in that
- 21:42Speaker 3: place where they're channeling that why not Me energy. What
- 21:46Speaker 3: advice do you have to offer for someone who was
- 21:48Speaker 3: also chasing a dream that they might have?
- 21:50Speaker 2: I think, and this is not I wish this was
- 21:52Speaker 2: like a silver bullet answer. It's like, there's probably more
- 21:55Speaker 2: work work to be done internally, and I think that's
- 21:58Speaker 2: why I came out of People don't know. It's like
- 22:00Speaker 2: a week long intensive but I did a ton of
- 22:03Speaker 2: work around my shame and things that I was carrying.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And I think the reason you don't have that why
- 22:09Speaker 2: not me, which was me for like seven years, is
- 22:12Speaker 2: because I hadn't come to terms with not feeling enough.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I hadn't, you know, understood why I reacted to certain
- 22:17Speaker 2: situations a certain way, Like there's so many things that
- 22:20Speaker 2: we thought it could be a hold a separate podcast.
- 22:22Speaker 2: But I think I came out of that because I
- 22:24Speaker 2: had addressed those things and then it was instant. It
- 22:28Speaker 2: was an instant, but it was it felt instant in
- 22:30Speaker 2: that moment. And so I think a lot of times
- 22:32Speaker 2: when you see someone else do something like that, they're like, oh,
- 22:35Speaker 2: how do they just like have that instant confidence and
- 22:37Speaker 2: you're like, oh, that's not instant. It is not instant.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Grew overtime.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Yes, grew over time, But I think that would be
- 22:43Speaker 2: My advice is like, do you know, kind of dive
- 22:45Speaker 2: deep a little bit and then it will come naturally.
- 22:48Speaker 2: But you have to you have to go inward first
- 22:50Speaker 2: to figure out why you're not feeling that, because that
- 22:52Speaker 2: can I mean, it's the furthest thing from being able
- 22:55Speaker 2: to force it.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You can't fake that, No, you really can't. You really can't.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I would be remiss if we didn't at least double
- 23:00Speaker 3: click on talk a little bit about Hoffman, because you've
- 23:03Speaker 3: mentioned it twice now, So for those that aren't familiar
- 23:06Speaker 3: with what you experienced, what you went through, why didn't
- 23:08Speaker 3: you share a little bit about it.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:09Speaker 2: So it's essentially a seven day long intensive. I mean,
- 23:13Speaker 2: it's no phone, basically, anything that can distract you. There's
- 23:16Speaker 2: no workouts, there's no phone, there's no book, there's no computers,
- 23:20Speaker 2: there's I mean literally you're yourself in front of you
- 23:23Speaker 2: and you can't hide. And it's actually some mentor of
- 23:26Speaker 2: mine had gone and at the time I was in Nashville,
- 23:30Speaker 2: everything was going great like businesses, the best house, the
- 23:35Speaker 2: best friends, and I was crying every day and I
- 23:37Speaker 2: was like, okay, so it's not the external. I kept
- 23:40Speaker 2: being like, Oh, it's this job, it's this city. It's
- 23:42Speaker 2: like I just kept blaming it. And finally I was like, damn,
- 23:45Speaker 2: it's me. And she told me about it and I
- 23:48Speaker 2: literally went signed up immediately, like didn't even research it
- 23:52Speaker 2: that much, put.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Down the deposet and was like I'm in.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And it's very much based around just like the patterns
- 23:57Speaker 2: you develop as a kid from your parents, good batter
- 24:00Speaker 2: different and so it's just the awareness first and foremost
- 24:03Speaker 2: of those which I had, I maybe had awareness of
- 24:06Speaker 2: three of like the twenty of them, so that was
- 24:08Speaker 2: very eye opening. And then there's a lot of expression,
- 24:12Speaker 2: so like kind of getting out a lot of the
- 24:15Speaker 2: gunk that is built up over the years from a
- 24:17Speaker 2: verbal perspective, from a physical perspective, from a written perspective.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And then it's like the self compassion, awareness, forgiveness of others,
- 24:26Speaker 2: forgiveness of yourself, and then new tools and ways of being.
- 24:29Speaker 2: So that's kind of like the journey you go on.
- 24:31Speaker 2: And the best word I have to describe as you
- 24:34Speaker 2: feel light come out and you feel light, and then
- 24:36Speaker 2: you feel like you have like the tools to then
- 24:39Speaker 2: move forward with life.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And obviously you're it's not gonna be as perfect as
- 24:42Speaker 1: the day you get out and you just feel angelic, but.
- 24:44Speaker 2: You have those things to then carry you through to
- 24:46Speaker 2: be able to kind of face every day.
- 24:49Speaker 3: From the way that you describe it, I would imagine
- 24:52Speaker 3: that it's actually quite difficult.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's like I always use the phrase
- 24:57Speaker 2: excruciatingly beautiful, like that is the word I use because,
- 25:00Speaker 2: oh my god, yeah, like you. I don't push it
- 25:04Speaker 2: on many really anyone, because it's if someone and I.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Saw people whereas like a spouse was like.
- 25:10Speaker 2: You need to go in here, Like if you are
- 25:12Speaker 2: not ready to full commit, like one thousand percent commit
- 25:16Speaker 2: and be willing to go to that dark place, you
- 25:19Speaker 2: won't you won't see benefits from it.
- 25:21Speaker 1: So yes, it is.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It is the hardest, one of the hardest things I've
- 25:24Speaker 2: ever done, but at the same time, like so worth it.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so worth it.
- 25:28Speaker 3: It's such a such a super interesting opportunity truly, and uh,
- 25:32Speaker 3: the other thing that piqued my interest was when you
- 25:34Speaker 3: said that you exercised it in like a physical way.
- 25:37Speaker 1: What did that look like?
- 25:39Speaker 2: I need to know we'll get too too detailed in
- 25:42Speaker 2: case someone goes like that's the thing, Like you're oh.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So like is this the first don't talk about club?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, people, I mean I've shared details with people.
- 25:51Speaker 2: What people say like, you're not supposed to share details
- 25:52Speaker 2: because it's so whatever. But the thing that was super
- 25:55Speaker 2: unique is like, yeah, you actually have a device and
- 25:58Speaker 2: you're hitting things and you're hitting certain words and you're
- 26:01Speaker 2: hitting and I'm not I'm not super into those things.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And so I came in and I someone had told
- 26:08Speaker 2: me about it, and I was like, Oh, that's going
- 26:09Speaker 2: to be so weird, but again, I'm going to full commit.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Within two minutes.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I was like uncontrollably crying, like and I was just like,
- 26:18Speaker 2: what is happening?
- 26:19Speaker 1: But it works? It works, and so I know there's
- 26:22Speaker 1: a lot of research around why it works.
- 26:24Speaker 2: But I was just like, there's there's no way that
- 26:26Speaker 2: me hitting this thing how in the world. And I
- 26:29Speaker 2: was very mantra based and I just kept kept going.
- 26:33Speaker 2: But yeah, it's it's wild, especially being in a room
- 26:36Speaker 2: of like thirty people doing this.
- 26:38Speaker 3: That was going to be the follow up question was
- 26:39Speaker 3: how many people are around you as you're experiencing.
- 26:42Speaker 1: This, thirty people, but you feel like you're all the
- 26:44Speaker 1: only one in the room. Wow. Yeah, it's pretty wild,
- 26:47Speaker 1: but it's truly so well.
- 26:48Speaker 3: And then when you came home, I know you said
- 26:51Speaker 3: that like individuals are there because their partners were like,
- 26:53Speaker 3: you should go to this, But did you feel as
- 26:54Speaker 3: though you wanted your husband to do it as well?
- 26:57Speaker 1: I actually didn't.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I mean, he he was like I want He's all
- 27:01Speaker 2: about personal development and it's like, I'd love to go
- 27:03Speaker 2: to one similar but I feel like he's a pretty
- 27:07Speaker 2: self aware dude. And a lot of people are like,
- 27:12Speaker 2: everyone should go. I'm like, I actually don't agree with that.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I think some people should go. I think it would
- 27:16Speaker 2: benefit some people, but I don't necessarily think that it
- 27:20Speaker 2: would be what he would need.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, no, just super yeah.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Because a lot of people say that, they're like, oh
- 27:26Speaker 2: my god, I definitely have to spend myself so that
- 27:28Speaker 2: we can communicate in our Huffmann language.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, I think we're okay. I don't
- 27:32Speaker 1: know if everyone needs to do that. Now.
- 27:35Speaker 3: As a part of your work this week, you've had
- 27:36Speaker 3: the opportunity to be a little over the place and
- 27:40Speaker 3: the best of ways checking out all the different venues,
- 27:42Speaker 3: all the different sports. If you had to do something
- 27:46Speaker 3: that wasn't swimming at this point, with the exposure that
- 27:48Speaker 3: you've had, do you have an answer as to what
- 27:51Speaker 3: that would be beach volleyball?
- 27:53Speaker 2: Okay, talk to me about the why Carrie Walls jennings
- 27:55Speaker 2: Is become a really good friend. She's also yeah who
- 27:58Speaker 2: sports correspondent, and so just kind of interviewed her on
- 28:02Speaker 2: the podcast, so knowing her story and kind of knowing
- 28:05Speaker 2: a little bit behind the scenes of what they go
- 28:06Speaker 2: through and the excitement, and I just I've always been
- 28:09Speaker 2: such a fan.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Of beach volleyball.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Actually saw her and Missy May win They're Golden eight
- 28:15Speaker 2: against the Chinese like in the rain, Like it was
- 28:18Speaker 2: like a movie. So I think that one and then
- 28:21Speaker 2: the close second would probably be a track and field.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I love to hear that.
- 28:24Speaker 3: I also feel as though beach volleyball like would be
- 28:26Speaker 3: in my future. But I also like cannot get off
- 28:29Speaker 3: this idea that I would just love to play on
- 28:31Speaker 3: the US women's national team. If I had to choose
- 28:33Speaker 3: a sport, it would probably be women's soccer. Well, we
- 28:36Speaker 3: talked a lot about your history with swimming and of
- 28:39Speaker 3: course what your relationship is like with it now. Talk
- 28:42Speaker 3: to us about what your relationship is like now with
- 28:45Speaker 3: wellness as a whole and movement.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Uh. Yeah, So I feel like it's I feel like
- 28:51Speaker 2: for me, wellness is not really on like the mental side.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I actually don't like to work out. I'm being super promised.
- 28:59Speaker 2: I do it, and I do feel like on the
- 29:02Speaker 2: days that I don't move, I definitely have a you know,
- 29:04Speaker 2: more cloudiness and I don't have as much sharpness in
- 29:07Speaker 2: my decision making and things like that. But I wish,
- 29:10Speaker 2: I wish I was someone who was like, oh, you
- 29:12Speaker 2: know what I really need today A run, Like I
- 29:14Speaker 2: just don't have that. Maybe I will one day, but
- 29:17Speaker 2: I run. I do a CrossFit when I'm home. I
- 29:22Speaker 2: run two marathons in the past year. Did not like
- 29:24Speaker 2: it was not my.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Running signs up for two marathons. I kind of there's a.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Reason I got like pulled into one and my husband
- 29:32Speaker 2: was doing it and then he had a knee injury,
- 29:34Speaker 2: so then I was kind of on my own.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And then I'd already committed to the second one before I.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Finished the before I even did the first one, which
- 29:39Speaker 2: was a workie move and I was doing I did
- 29:43Speaker 2: the New York City marathon, and I was working for
- 29:45Speaker 2: a charity, and so it was like on behalf of them,
- 29:47Speaker 2: so it was bigger than myself.
- 29:48Speaker 1: But then after that I was like, no, I'll do
- 29:50Speaker 1: half marathons.
- 29:50Speaker 2: It's great, love that, but I think I just now
- 29:54Speaker 2: like I want to feel fit. I want to look fit,
- 29:56Speaker 2: and so that's I you know, make sure I get
- 29:58Speaker 2: in five times a week and and that's good enough
- 30:01Speaker 2: for me.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Do you feel, aside from obviously you vocalize that feeling
- 30:04Speaker 3: fit and maybe looking a certain amount of fit is
- 30:06Speaker 3: important to you, do you feel like any sort of
- 30:09Speaker 3: external pressure to incorporate these things in your life As
- 30:12Speaker 3: someone who is a former olympian.
- 30:15Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I feel pressure to answer that I like it, which
- 30:18Speaker 2: I've gotten better at being like no, I actually really don't.
- 30:21Speaker 2: People are like really or like they're like, you don't
- 30:24Speaker 2: swim anymore, you.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Know, and I'm like no, Like it just doesn't for me.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So much of swimming, so much of at that point
- 30:32Speaker 2: in my life was for performance, right, for being like
- 30:35Speaker 2: what filled me up? Was like trying to be the
- 30:36Speaker 2: best in the world, and so it wasn't like swimming
- 30:39Speaker 2: or those things. Even at an early age for me
- 30:41Speaker 2: was oh, I just like love this environment or this
- 30:44Speaker 2: environment helps my mind. It just I just don't think
- 30:47Speaker 2: it's how i've that's not how I fill up my
- 30:50Speaker 2: cup in that way. And I've tried everything, like I
- 30:52Speaker 2: really have. I'm like, all right, I'm gonna go for
- 30:54Speaker 2: like a crazy lift. I'm gonna get excited about that,
- 30:56Speaker 2: or I'm gonna go try to do a marathon and
- 30:58Speaker 2: see if that and like, so I haven't quite found
- 31:01Speaker 2: it yet, but I'm also kind of like okay with that.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Like I had a lot of guilt associated with that.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Like I so I finished the New York City Marathon
- 31:11Speaker 2: and I didn't have the emotion that I again thought
- 31:16Speaker 2: I should have.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's all these.
- 31:18Speaker 2: People around me like crying and in like I'm like oh,
- 31:21Speaker 2: And then I felt guilt for not feeling that way.
- 31:23Speaker 2: And I think for me it was just like and
- 31:26Speaker 2: I'm working on it, but like the completion thing didn't
- 31:29Speaker 2: make me feel proud of myself. Now I'm like I'm
- 31:32Speaker 2: like forty thousand, one hundred and thirty two place, right,
- 31:36Speaker 2: and so that didn't do it for me, and I'm
- 31:39Speaker 2: kind of like.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Okay, that's okay.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Maybe my thing is in business and maybe that's where
- 31:43Speaker 2: I'm you know, really striving for, and then the fitness
- 31:46Speaker 2: is now.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Just another thing that I'm doing. So it's been a
- 31:50Speaker 1: journey with that, for sure. It's been a journey.
- 31:51Speaker 3: But the way that you describe in how you feel
- 31:54Speaker 3: is completely understandable and this broader notion of finding joy
- 31:59Speaker 3: in the journey. And for me, when there have been
- 32:03Speaker 3: times that I've gone after a goal that maybe I
- 32:05Speaker 3: should my should myself, should myself into, I realized when
- 32:10Speaker 3: I got to that goal that it didn't feel as
- 32:12Speaker 3: sweet as a goal that I went after. That the
- 32:15Speaker 3: process was the thing that made me feel so good.
- 32:18Speaker 3: And for instance, like I am likely going to run
- 32:22Speaker 3: the New York City Marathon in November, and as a
- 32:24Speaker 3: part of that, the reason that I want to run
- 32:27Speaker 3: the marathon has absolutely nothing with what's going to happen
- 32:30Speaker 3: on race day.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Well, it has nothing to do with how I finish
- 32:32Speaker 1: on race day.
- 32:33Speaker 3: The reason that I want to do it is because
- 32:35Speaker 3: of the journey. It's because I know so many people
- 32:38Speaker 3: right now that are training not only for this race
- 32:40Speaker 3: but for Chicago.
- 32:41Speaker 1: So many friends.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's such an opportunity to gather with them, and then
- 32:45Speaker 3: bigger than that, I want to go and have the
- 32:48Speaker 3: funnest day of my life. I have run this marathon
- 32:51Speaker 3: seven times and I have never gone out there and
- 32:55Speaker 3: like literally not for a second purely enjoyed it or
- 33:00Speaker 3: like just looked at what the last mile was like. Yeah,
- 33:02Speaker 3: and so it's a journey thing, I think, And that's
- 33:05Speaker 3: something that truly has been a really beautiful understanding for me.
- 33:10Speaker 3: I've gotten older about the things that I do and
- 33:12Speaker 3: why I do them, and knowing that where there's a why,
- 33:15Speaker 3: a strong why, there's a way, and then it's just
- 33:18Speaker 3: up to you to figure out what that way really entails.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Yeah. I agree. Yeah, it has to be a strong why.
- 33:22Speaker 1: You can't just be like, eh, okay, I guess we'll
- 33:24Speaker 1: do this. Well.
- 33:25Speaker 3: This is like the people that went to Hoffmann and
- 33:27Speaker 3: then they were like not about it exactly, and they
- 33:29Speaker 3: didn't have a strong why, they just had a should yep,
- 33:31Speaker 3: And that just as it isn't going to be the
- 33:34Speaker 3: thing you talked earlier about how you felt as though
- 33:39Speaker 3: you were supposed to do things a certain way, especially
- 33:42Speaker 3: when it came to your swimming career, people looked at
- 33:44Speaker 3: you certain a way as one time Olympic going into
- 33:48Speaker 3: your second Olympics. Now so many years later, when you
- 33:51Speaker 3: look in the mirror, what is it that you see
- 33:53Speaker 3: looking back at you.
- 33:56Speaker 2: I think I look at myself as someone who really
- 34:00Speaker 2: held my my head high and handled everything with grace,
- 34:04Speaker 2: Like I don't have any regrets in that, Like I
- 34:06Speaker 2: went to every single press conference, I was respectful of everyone.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I was a great teammate, and I think as a
- 34:12Speaker 2: point of pride as well, like I you know, looking
- 34:15Speaker 2: even looking at Olympic trials and looking at some of
- 34:18Speaker 2: the athletes who made it in three events, and I'm like,
- 34:20Speaker 2: oh my gosh, I made it in like five individual events,
- 34:23Speaker 2: Like there's definitely a point of pride there now. And
- 34:27Speaker 2: even looking at like I swim four four hundreds and
- 34:29Speaker 2: six two hundreds the first day, first four days of the.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Games, like that's a lot. But in the moment, it's
- 34:35Speaker 1: just like no, this is just it's a lot, but
- 34:37Speaker 1: like this is just what I'm supposed to do.
- 34:38Speaker 2: And so now looking back, I'm like, dang, like you
- 34:41Speaker 2: kind of like rocks it out. That's awesome, you know,
- 34:43Speaker 2: So definitely a lot more pride. Still some twinge of
- 34:47Speaker 2: you know, saying three time medalist and not three time
- 34:49Speaker 2: goal medalists, But I would say overall pride.
- 34:52Speaker 3: And then beyond being an athlete, what is it that
- 34:54Speaker 3: you see when you look in the mirror.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Then are now? No?
- 34:58Speaker 2: Now I would say just a great I would say
- 35:03Speaker 2: a great mentor a great friend, and a I would
- 35:10Speaker 2: say successful professional woman.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Yeah, how does that make you feel when you say it? Weird? Yeah?
- 35:18Speaker 2: I feel like I think, I think this is what
- 35:19Speaker 2: I see, But yeah, I think that that's still a
- 35:23Speaker 2: work in progress for sure. But I think the piece
- 35:26Speaker 2: that let me up the most was just that some
- 35:29Speaker 2: of the athletes have reached out to me and asked
- 35:30Speaker 2: for advice, and so I'm like, Wow, the fact that
- 35:32Speaker 2: I was able to be there in that moment because
- 35:35Speaker 2: of things I've gone through meant so much, so much.
- 35:39Speaker 1: What a beautiful opportunity that is.
- 35:41Speaker 3: That's what I'm hearing you say is that there's so
- 35:42Speaker 3: many opportunities ahead, and some of them may entail a
- 35:45Speaker 3: lot of things that are unknown, But the unknown is
- 35:47Speaker 3: an opportunity to.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Get excited as well. Exactly.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Well, I'm so happy that we have the opportunity. But
- 35:53Speaker 3: just sit down for a little bit here today. For
- 35:55Speaker 3: those that might not follow along with you just yet
