- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello, big Flute Nation, Welcome to justin Kats. My name
- 0:16Speaker 2: is Michael Bennett, coming to you from Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.
- 0:22Speaker 2: As I just, oh my gosh, I'm just having a
- 0:24Speaker 2: hard time getting that out right now. But it's hard
- 0:27Speaker 2: to believe. We're thirty days away from football here in
- 0:31Speaker 2: the Bluegrass, and I'm looking forward to those days with
- 0:35Speaker 2: a new regime and positive outlooks. So we'll see how
- 0:39Speaker 2: it goes. But it's Monday, August third, and I'm doing
- 0:45Speaker 2: a little bit of a different show today. Just is
- 0:47Speaker 2: not going to be able to join us, even though
- 0:49Speaker 2: he's producing it. But a little hard for us to
- 0:51Speaker 2: communicate when we're not together in the same studio. But
- 0:56Speaker 2: I'm here on top of the patio here at the
- 0:58Speaker 2: recruiting room at CommonWell Stadium with two good friends I've
- 1:02Speaker 2: known for many years, Larry Vought as well as John
- 1:06Speaker 2: Doctor excuse me, doctor John Long. Good morning everybody.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Hey, my morning.
- 1:13Speaker 3: How great is this man?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Listen? You know the three of us did this you
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think it was you or was it you Larry
- 1:20Speaker 2: that reminded me we did it about what five or
- 1:24Speaker 2: six years ago on the field.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Something like that after COVID, wasn't it?
- 1:28Speaker 4: Yeah? Right after?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah, well all right, just didn't help me out here.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Now what uh in put three? Is that right? You
- 1:40Speaker 2: tell me if that's it? Or speaker? Yeah? Okay, all right?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Is that testing right there? John? You're talking to you?
- 1:47Speaker 2: You're doing a little Corey price there. Okay, we gotta
- 1:50Speaker 2: get you to speak up. But yeah, So was it
- 1:53Speaker 2: you that told me, Larry and reminded me that we
- 1:55Speaker 2: did it on the field.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I did mention that to you, but it could have
- 1:58Speaker 1: been somebody. It could have been some of your others.
- 2:01Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I was either one of you because I thought, oh
- 2:04Speaker 2: my gosh, I've forgotten all about that, and I thought
- 2:07Speaker 2: it would be a lot of fun for us to
- 2:09Speaker 2: come back and kind of celebrate a new regime coming
- 2:13Speaker 2: into the University Kentucky taking it over the football program.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And unfortunately we're na able to get us on the field,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but we're overlooking Commonwealth Stadium.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Probably better, you think, so? Yeah, I think this is probably.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Why do you think this is better? Because I love
- 2:25Speaker 2: being down there on the field.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Well, you got the whole view right here. You can
- 2:28Speaker 1: see everything going on.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Okay, fair, Yeah, all we need is a jumbo tron
- 2:33Speaker 2: working correctly without it flashing about to give me a migraine.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Michael, you and I we've always talked about how
- 2:39Speaker 3: this Commonwealth Stadium Kroger Field was our happy place.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Growing Oh yeah. Absolutely.
- 2:45Speaker 3: To be here on UK Football media Day and to
- 2:48Speaker 3: be able to experience it live and in person, and
- 2:51Speaker 3: this is a dream come true. It's almost as good
- 2:54Speaker 3: as Asian horse racing.
- 2:57Speaker 2: My god, Larry's looking at you like you're crazy.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Those of you who have been listening in the last
- 3:03Speaker 3: few shows know how enamore Michael Bennett is about Asian
- 3:08Speaker 3: horse racing. If we couldn't have Asian horse racing, he
- 3:12Speaker 3: at least wanted to have at least one Asian here
- 3:15Speaker 3: to represent.
- 3:16Speaker 1: My communized daily form out there.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, I mean, if it's not me, it's probably even
- 3:24Speaker 2: worse for Nick Raus, who's really gotten into it. I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 2: he put the funniest tweet I'd read on Friday. It's like,
- 3:31Speaker 2: my name is Nick Rause and I am addicted to
- 3:33Speaker 2: Asian horse racing videos and I am too. I mean,
- 3:38Speaker 2: they are hilarious. I don't know what kind of horse
- 3:40Speaker 2: racing they're doing over there, But it's horrible horse racing, well,
- 3:45Speaker 2: are dangerous at the very.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Go ahead and stop right there before we get into
- 3:48Speaker 3: trouble with the Chinese community.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I'm not on TikTok right now, so they have no
- 3:53Speaker 2: idea what I'm saying.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So I bet they do.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Oh boy, And you know what, guess how much I care.
- 3:59Speaker 2: If they knew what I was saying, you.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Probably ought to care a lot.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Why should I care? I had a conversation yesterday at
- 4:05Speaker 2: lunch with somebody and a nice couple from Nashville that
- 4:09Speaker 2: came up, and I told they're evidently having a huge
- 4:14Speaker 2: argument down in Nashville, Tennessee because of the fact they're
- 4:18Speaker 2: putting up these things around the entire town where it
- 4:22Speaker 2: scanned your license plate and it can tell you wherever
- 4:26Speaker 2: you are in the city. And it's really mainly to
- 4:29Speaker 2: look at where bad guys are and that kind of stuff,
- 4:32Speaker 2: and they claim it's helped quite a bit. They're doing
- 4:34Speaker 2: it in Florida. A lot of people in the Saint
- 4:36Speaker 2: Petersburg area are going nuts over this. I looked at him, says,
- 4:40Speaker 2: I don't care. I have nothing to hide. I'm not
- 4:43Speaker 2: doing anything illegal. Why do I care? Leary bought about
- 4:46Speaker 2: any of this.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I don't fare you care about anything, so really it
- 4:49Speaker 1: doesn't make any difference at all, up or not? I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 1: so so yeah, I didn't. I haven't heard anything about that.
- 4:59Speaker 1: A nice My daughter and son in law lay there
- 5:02Speaker 1: and had had heard them complaining, So I don't know.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Okay, Well, get your michae a little closer to you
- 5:08Speaker 2: if you can. But anyway, there we go, perfect, all right,
- 5:11Speaker 2: hopefully that helps you there.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Justin Yeah, big big brother is always watching you.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Now. They're always going to it's not going to change.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Especially nowadays, even more so. They've got all these big,
- 5:21Speaker 3: huge data centers. Everything that you your keyboard, everything that
- 5:25Speaker 3: we're saying on the radio right now is going into
- 5:28Speaker 3: those data centers. It's it's a new new world we
- 5:33Speaker 3: live in right now.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And again, I just don't care. I don't know why
- 5:37Speaker 2: people are just going nuts for it. It's an invasion
- 5:39Speaker 2: of privacy. It's like, well, I mean, what's there to
- 5:41Speaker 2: hide anymore? They're watching us from satellite, so what difference
- 5:45Speaker 2: does it make they're gonna implant something in Michael Bennett
- 5:48Speaker 2: one But all right, let's talk about football, because you
- 5:55Speaker 2: know y'all, especially you, Larry, And I'm promised I'm not
- 5:59Speaker 2: picking on your age at all, I promise you.
- 6:01Speaker 1: But here comes okay, here cufs.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But you know when you I'll start with you, Larry,
- 6:06Speaker 2: because you've been in the UK media the longest. How
- 6:09Speaker 2: many years does this makeing now? Fifty two? Fifty two
- 6:13Speaker 2: years in UK media? If when you come here to
- 6:17Speaker 2: Commonwealth Stadium, you sit here on this field, tell me
- 6:21Speaker 2: what's the first thing you think and what are some
- 6:22Speaker 2: of the more fonder memories that you have being a
- 6:26Speaker 2: part of.
- 6:26Speaker 1: UK media, well, not being part of the UK there's
- 6:30Speaker 1: two different questions. Part of the UK media and my
- 6:32Speaker 1: favorite memory. Those are two different things.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Okay, I would like to hear both of them.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Then, Well, because in the start of the nineteen sixty
- 6:40Speaker 1: nine football season, I was sitting right over there and
- 6:44Speaker 1: that's where I met my wife, who today is our
- 6:45Speaker 1: fifty second anniversary today at opening game of the nineteen
- 6:49Speaker 1: sixty nine season or nineteen seventy three season. Nineteen seventy
- 6:53Speaker 1: three season dates mixed up? Now, Yeah, that was wow. Careful, Yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 1: nineteen seventy three season.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Tventy three season. I couldn't even tell you. Let's see, Uh,
- 7:03Speaker 2: fran Cursey was the head foot.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it came and was injecting excitement into the UK
- 7:09Speaker 1: football program. He'd been out and gathered, he came out
- 7:12Speaker 1: and met with students, and he was a young, charismatic guy,
- 7:16Speaker 1: was going to change the whole fortune of UK football.
- 7:18Speaker 2: So it's kind of familiar, does it?
- 7:20Speaker 1: It does? And of course he went ten and one
- 7:23Speaker 1: in seventy seven. Yeah, took UK to the Peach Bowl
- 7:25Speaker 1: in seventy six, and remember that he was on top.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Of the world.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Here's what I remember about that we went down there.
- 7:31Speaker 2: My dad's car was broken into downtown Atlanta. They stole
- 7:37Speaker 2: his golf clubs. He had played golf that day. Uh.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And we were living in Richmond, Virginia at the time.
- 7:43Speaker 2: And because it was a beautiful day the day before
- 7:46Speaker 2: the game, the next day it was snowing and cold
- 7:49Speaker 2: and we had to put up some kind of box
- 7:52Speaker 2: to tape around the window as we drove from Atlanta
- 7:55Speaker 2: back to a Richmond, Virginia in the coldest car you've
- 7:59Speaker 2: ever read. So all right, all right, so congratulations, okay,
- 8:03Speaker 2: And who was the team that they played. Do you
- 8:06Speaker 2: remember that?
- 8:07Speaker 1: Ah, not sure it might have No, Alabama was the
- 8:12Speaker 1: next week. I think yeah, but it wasn't. I don't
- 8:14Speaker 1: remember who the opening game was.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Now you just remember the love of your life. Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, she hustled me and I gave in.
- 8:23Speaker 2: All right. So as a media member, what was your
- 8:25Speaker 2: favorite memory here? Oh?
- 8:29Speaker 1: I don't know, There's There's been a lot. I mean
- 8:31Speaker 1: watching that nineteen seventy seventeen was pretty darn special. Still
- 8:36Speaker 1: the best UK team I've seen play, So I would
- 8:38Speaker 1: probably go all the way back to watching the Arts
- 8:41Speaker 1: Steel Derrick Ramsey Jerry Blanton team a lot. But also
- 8:45Speaker 1: you don't watching How Mommy come in do what he did?
- 8:48Speaker 1: That was a lot of fun.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I really enjoyed that a lot.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And also he see what was so memorable about that too.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I remember how Mommy being interviewed and he would say, look,
- 8:58Speaker 2: just because we're losing, look at all the people that
- 9:01Speaker 2: are still here. He had broad excitement. I love that
- 9:04Speaker 2: How Mummy era as well, because of the fact that
- 9:07Speaker 2: you had Mike Leach and all the different assistant coaches
- 9:11Speaker 2: he had on his team. You had the air raid,
- 9:13Speaker 2: you had the soaring going, had they changed the name
- 9:16Speaker 2: of Cooper Drive to Mummy. Yeah, and he was a
- 9:19Speaker 2: big Jimmy Buffett fan. I was all about that Mummy. Yes.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He just had thought a little bit about defense.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, just a little.
- 9:26Speaker 1: He did to think much. He just had thought a
- 9:27Speaker 1: little bit about it because the shame of it was
- 9:29Speaker 1: he had good defensive players, he just didn't have great
- 9:32Speaker 1: defensive coaching.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Is that what it was? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, John wat
- 9:37Speaker 2: same question back of you. What are your favorite memories
- 9:41Speaker 2: as a fan of UK football and then as a
- 9:44Speaker 2: media member?
- 9:45Speaker 3: Well as a fan, I've been a fan for almost
- 9:47Speaker 3: fifty years now. I can't believe I'm saying that because
- 9:49Speaker 3: that also means that I am old too. But probably
- 9:53Speaker 3: my fondest memories are back to my college days. This place,
- 9:56Speaker 3: Commonwealth Stadium, had just opened, so I was coming in.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I was a sophomore that year. I remember the Derek
- 10:04Speaker 3: Ramsey teams. And I'm not here to promote my books,
- 10:06Speaker 3: but I actually did a book. Great Derek Ramsey, who
- 10:11Speaker 3: I say is one of the most accomplished players ever
- 10:14Speaker 3: to wear the Kentucky uniform.
- 10:16Speaker 4: That's over across all.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Sports when you consider what he did. But when you
- 10:20Speaker 3: look at that team, especially that nineteen seventy seven team
- 10:24Speaker 3: that went undefeated through the Southeastern Conference. In this day
- 10:29Speaker 3: and age, I don't think you're ever going to see
- 10:31Speaker 3: a team that's ever going to go undefeated in the
- 10:34Speaker 3: Southeastern Conference. Again, not a Kentucky team. If that happens,
- 10:38Speaker 3: I'll be the first to be jumping up and down
- 10:40Speaker 3: and doing cartwheels. But that those teams were probably my
- 10:45Speaker 3: favorite because that was when I was just getting started,
- 10:48Speaker 3: and those are usually the memories that kind of stick
- 10:51Speaker 3: with you.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Though as a media member.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I'm relatively new in that.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Well, no, we're not new anymore.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Over for twelve.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Years right now, I can't believe how quickly that that
- 11:03Speaker 3: has gone. But it has to be the Mark Stoops here,
- 11:07Speaker 3: especially those can win season.
- 11:09Speaker 1: That's only are you've known, if you've twelve years, say
- 11:13Speaker 1: it has to be the Mark. I could choose a
- 11:16Speaker 1: lot of other heroes right there, Buddy, Well sign there. Well, yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: it's just starting.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Yeah that is fair to say, because you're right there,
- 11:25Speaker 2: because as a media member, we don't have much to remember.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It's just Mark Stoops and that's it. Yeah, which was
- 11:30Speaker 2: a good time, absolutely well until the very end.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty ugly but well, not totally ugly but UK
- 11:38Speaker 1: longtime football standards.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, because I see ugly. I can tell
- 11:43Speaker 2: you sitting right over there on that wall are standing
- 11:47Speaker 2: on the wall. That's where my family and I would
- 11:50Speaker 2: sit for many years. And dad moved us. I don't
- 11:53Speaker 2: know why, but it's just right there. I remember being
- 11:56Speaker 2: with my mom and my dad because you know, John
- 11:58Speaker 2: he wrote that beautiful aur on me a few years back.
- 12:02Speaker 2: But uh, that's that's those are memories right there. I
- 12:05Speaker 2: love and being with my mom and dad, and how
- 12:07Speaker 2: I wish I could be and it wasn't just my
- 12:09Speaker 2: mom and dad, it'd be my entire family. We'd be
- 12:11Speaker 2: up there, and those are the great memories for me,
- 12:14Speaker 2: is just family. The tailgating, uh yeah, coming up here,
- 12:19Speaker 2: watching the Alabama game, watching Tim Couch throw that pass
- 12:22Speaker 2: to who is that wide receiver, Larry Yeah, Craig East
- 12:26Speaker 2: and uh and then the LSU game when LSU comes
- 12:29Speaker 2: in here and uh and number one in the country
- 12:34Speaker 2: and and and Rich Brooks beats them. I mean, how
- 12:38Speaker 2: what a tremendous night that was. And every time we
- 12:41Speaker 2: were down there in the the field, and I remember
- 12:44Speaker 2: to this day, Max still has it. I'm standing there,
- 12:48Speaker 2: We're all on the field with Max, Mason, Patrician, myself,
- 12:53Speaker 2: and this gentleman comes over and taps me on the
- 12:55Speaker 2: shoulder and goes, sir, is that your son? I said yes,
- 12:59Speaker 2: and he goes, would you please tell him to stop
- 13:01Speaker 2: picking the grass? He's making a hole? Look down. He
- 13:05Speaker 2: had picked so much grass there was nothing there. It
- 13:08Speaker 2: was like as a big divot. He just wanted to
- 13:10Speaker 2: keep the memory of UK beating LSU that night.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Wow.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a beauty. A lot of University of Kentucky
- 13:17Speaker 3: sports and those of us who are big, big, lifelong fans,
- 13:21Speaker 3: we remember not only the moments, but even more importantly,
- 13:24Speaker 3: we remember who we were with.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, during those moments.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And I'm kind of tearing up as you're going through
- 13:31Speaker 3: all this reminiscing because both my parents have passed. But
- 13:35Speaker 3: as you were bringing up being in the stadium with
- 13:38Speaker 3: your dad and the memories that you remember seeing with him,
- 13:41Speaker 3: you can't help but think about them, and you want
- 13:45Speaker 3: those memories to be happy, and most of the time
- 13:47Speaker 3: they are because they were associated with the happy moment.
- 13:50Speaker 3: University of Kentucky Sports in general.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Well, I think about you know, there are so many things.
- 14:00Speaker 2: As far as a media member, I can remember, because yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 2: the Mark stoops era up, but you're right, up until
- 14:05Speaker 2: the end, was a lot of fun. And of course
- 14:07Speaker 2: what made it fun is getting to know the coaches,
- 14:10Speaker 2: like the three of us have getting to know Vince
- 14:12Speaker 2: Merrill as much as we loved him. Uh, it's just
- 14:14Speaker 2: a shame to come here and you know, well everything's
- 14:18Speaker 2: completely changed again. I'm not great with change. Don't You're
- 14:22Speaker 2: giving me a look like.
- 14:23Speaker 1: No, I'm not, You're I'm just I'm just controlling my
- 14:28Speaker 1: emotion right now.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And see that's what I want to hear, the most
- 14:31Speaker 2: of your emotion.
- 14:33Speaker 3: But jolly, Michael Bennett, I'm still seeing pictures of.
- 14:41Speaker 7: That.
- 14:41Speaker 2: That was a fun night. I mean, yeah, probably yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I mean he had come over to me right before that.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You know, I'm standing over there on the sidelines before
- 14:51Speaker 2: the game started at Missouri, and uh, all of a sudden,
- 14:55Speaker 2: the court of my eyes see somebody walking towards me.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And I'm the only one right there on the sideline,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and I'm like, who the heck is coming over here
- 15:04Speaker 2: to I want to be by myself a little.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You thought it was a security guard telling you were
- 15:08Speaker 1: supposed to be there exactly.
- 15:10Speaker 2: That's exactly what I thought. I thought. So here comes
- 15:12Speaker 2: some Missouri security guard tell me, sir, you're not supposed
- 15:15Speaker 2: to be here. And then all of a sudden I turned.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I'm like, holy crap, it's Mark Stoops. We had never
- 15:20Speaker 2: really engaged at all other than he'd been on the
- 15:22Speaker 2: radio show. Outside of that, that was it. And then
- 15:26Speaker 2: he comes up to me and says, Michael, if there's
- 15:28Speaker 2: I just wanted to meet you face to face. It's
- 15:30Speaker 2: great to meet you. If I could ever do anything
- 15:32Speaker 2: for you. That's when he shared his phone number with me,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and I'm like, okay, I didn't know what to say.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I mean, I was a little Fane Bennett. What you
- 15:40Speaker 2: don't know what to say? Come now stop it? But yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 2: we can call him right now if you own an
- 15:46Speaker 2: you want to answer. But uh, anyway, it was it was.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That was a fun night. And then of course they
- 15:51Speaker 2: went on with the clock at zero before the play
- 15:54Speaker 2: even started because there was ye Terry Wilson and threw
- 15:59Speaker 2: it to see j Conrad and uh. And then I
- 16:03Speaker 2: remember Mitch Barnhardt jumping like with some guys with a
- 16:07Speaker 2: bunch of Mark Hill was there jumping like a bunch
- 16:10Speaker 2: of little teenage girls. I mean it was crazy, how
- 16:14Speaker 2: excited they were. I start running out the field. Here
- 16:16Speaker 2: comes Mark Stoops puts his arm around me and it
- 16:19Speaker 2: gives me a big hug. And those are fun memories
- 16:24Speaker 2: to me. But anyway, I just I miss that now.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I want to know from you, Larry. But besides the
- 16:33Speaker 2: obviously we have to have our favorite coach right now.
- 16:36Speaker 2: But in the past, who who has been your favorite
- 16:39Speaker 2: UK football coach?
- 16:41Speaker 1: Hell? Mummy it was? Yeah, well, well I don't know.
- 16:45Speaker 1: But I mean I like Rich Brooks, I like Cercy.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I mean, I liked them all. That's not been one
- 16:49Speaker 1: I haven't liked.
- 16:50Speaker 2: You like Bill Curry.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I like Bill Curry a lot. Yeah, I like Bill
- 16:53Speaker 1: Curry a lot. But but how just because of the
- 16:55Speaker 1: fact that those years ago I wrote the story suggested
- 16:59Speaker 1: that he'd be a great coach for the UK before
- 17:01Speaker 1: anybody else did and got ridiculed. I mean I went
- 17:04Speaker 1: through two weeks of hell, everybody tell me how I
- 17:07Speaker 1: was deranged, And then when Hal got the job, it
- 17:11Speaker 1: was pretty nice, pretty nice.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, it was pretty nice. And because you know
- 17:17Speaker 2: who had ever I don't even know if I had
- 17:19Speaker 2: heard of Valdosta State back then, and I knew where
- 17:22Speaker 2: Valdosta was because that was always the last little town
- 17:26Speaker 2: you'd go through. And of course Steve Curry, what wasn't
- 17:29Speaker 2: it Newton that went to the head coach down there
- 17:34Speaker 2: at Florida, Uh, Steve Spurrier, Steve Spurrier and asked him,
- 17:41Speaker 2: who's a coach we should go higher? And he said,
- 17:43Speaker 2: you need to go talk to how Mommy.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I've never heard that. I've never heard that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: It was.
- 17:51Speaker 1: It was more a group of high school coaches in
- 17:53Speaker 1: Kentucky that suggested to see him Newton, that this is
- 17:56Speaker 1: somebody that he should look at. And that's hell. It
- 18:01Speaker 1: all kind of got started there.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well I see, I'm right there with you.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I'm I'm either between Rich Brooks and how mummy. But
- 18:10Speaker 2: then I look back. Even though he didn't do a
- 18:12Speaker 2: great job, my dad loved and respected Bill Curry. Yeah,
- 18:17Speaker 2: because he how he was not just on the field,
- 18:19Speaker 2: but especially off the field. It was hard not to
- 18:22Speaker 2: like if you didn't get to know him. If you
- 18:24Speaker 2: knew him personally, he was he was just a great
- 18:27Speaker 2: human being. Yeah, just so I'm kind of like you though,
- 18:29Speaker 2: I'll probably go how mummy, Rich Brooks probably ate one
- 18:32Speaker 2: A and one B. As far as I'm concerned, John,
- 18:34Speaker 2: what do you think.
- 18:36Speaker 3: From a purely football watching football standpoint, it would have
- 18:39Speaker 3: to be how his offense and air RAI brought a
- 18:42Speaker 3: lot of excitement. I remember when I was in dental school,
- 18:46Speaker 3: was when he was hired and we had him come
- 18:49Speaker 3: in and speak to us. And we're just a bunch
- 18:53Speaker 3: of dental students and he came in and he was
- 18:55Speaker 3: just the most natural and most friendly, the most down
- 18:59Speaker 3: to earth guy that you would ever meet. He was
- 19:02Speaker 3: just like he was talking to your neighbor. Didn't give
- 19:04Speaker 3: a speech or anything like that. But in terms of
- 19:07Speaker 3: actual personalities, I probably do like Mark Stoups And and
- 19:11Speaker 3: that was mainly because he was a neighbor of mine,
- 19:14Speaker 3: so I saw him in a little bit of a
- 19:16Speaker 3: different light. I saw him shooting baskets with his kid.
- 19:20Speaker 3: I saw him during the crawfish boils. The oh yeah, Mark,
- 19:25Speaker 3: Mark stoops crawfish boils. So it was always good to
- 19:28Speaker 3: see him in that light. It was sad how it
- 19:32Speaker 3: ended how his tenure ended.
- 19:33Speaker 2: That yeah, yeah, but he but he did the University
- 19:37Speaker 2: of favor by not forcing them to uh make them
- 19:40Speaker 2: pay that one bill and do it installments, don't you think,
- 19:43Speaker 2: I mean, that's kind of a.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It's not like you said this cove check for two
- 19:50Speaker 1: me and we'll call it even exactly.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well I take it, I mean, but.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I don't blame me. It was Julium, So.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, exactly, But I mean, the contract was a contract,
- 20:00Speaker 2: but he kind of gave into the university and helped
- 20:02Speaker 2: the university out quite a bit. But uh, all right,
- 20:04Speaker 2: we gotta take a break and come back. Uh we
- 20:07Speaker 2: talk a little more about history if y'all want to,
- 20:09Speaker 2: but we are going to concentrate on will Stein and
- 20:12Speaker 2: his first UK media day here at Lexington, Kentucky. We're
- 20:16Speaker 2: coming to you live right now from Commonwealth Stadium, so
- 20:19Speaker 2: stay right there if you want to join us. We're
- 20:21Speaker 2: not taking calls today, but we can take your text
- 20:24Speaker 2: FABO two four one four fourteen fifteen. I'll get to
- 20:27Speaker 2: those in a little bit. Stay right there.
- 20:29Speaker 5: This is just a cat Prow Street Bullion.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Row two years ago. Now we'll work on million. How
- 20:41Speaker 2: we bow it? You know that roll that's a true
- 21:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, what are we playing there? Justin I
- 21:03Speaker 2: kind of like that. But all right, if you're just
- 21:07Speaker 2: joining us as Justica's coming to you, and we're in Lexington,
- 21:10Speaker 2: Kentucky today, overlooking the beautiful field here at Commonwealth Stadium,
- 21:14Speaker 2: which which I I've always now, y'all are, y'all are?
- 21:19Speaker 2: I got John Wong and Larry Vaught with me just
- 21:21Speaker 2: to let you know, y'all are a little older than me.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Did it upset you when they changed the name from
- 21:27Speaker 2: Commonwealth sadum like it did me to that other name,
- 21:30Speaker 2: because I'm always I'm never gonna call it the other name.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It's always going to be Commonwealth Stadium. To me, it did.
- 21:37Speaker 3: I was upset about it. But the thing I think
- 21:39Speaker 3: that it surprised me was how Kroger.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Field is essentially kind of taken over.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Now, unless you're of the old era, Commonwealth Stadium is
- 21:49Speaker 3: something that's kind of gone from.
- 21:51Speaker 4: This new generation.
- 21:52Speaker 3: They're thinking Kroger Field completely, and I never.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Thought that would happen. I didn't either.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I never thought that it would be assimilate. But
- 22:00Speaker 4: turns out Kroger.
- 22:02Speaker 3: They got a good deal out of it, doesn't that.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh, they got a really good deal compared to
- 22:07Speaker 2: what a lot of stadiums are charging today because you
- 22:09Speaker 2: gotta believe. Uh, if UK had to do it all
- 22:12Speaker 2: over again, knowing we gotta pay players now, they would
- 22:14Speaker 2: have charged a lot more money.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Larry Vought, they probably still will. It's probably coming Kroger
- 22:22Speaker 1: better and George why they.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Can't exactly So it didn't bother you? Or no, you
- 22:26Speaker 2: don't care.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Now, not really got to figure. It's just a way
- 22:29Speaker 1: to make money. That's just the what was gonna start
- 22:32Speaker 1: happening more and more than quite a vision. It happened
- 22:34Speaker 1: all that it has. But uh, the name didn't bother
- 22:38Speaker 1: me a whole lot.
- 22:39Speaker 3: No, what this idea of advertising our jerseys right now,
- 22:43Speaker 3: that probably doesn't bother you at all either.
- 22:47Speaker 1: No, No, I mean it's it is right, but it's
- 22:50Speaker 1: never I've never been one to worry about what color
- 22:53Speaker 1: jersey and helmet you wore and all like it. Just
- 22:55Speaker 1: win the damn game I've ever been worried about. So
- 22:58Speaker 1: I don't care what you put on the er and
- 23:00Speaker 1: all like that. But if it, I mean, you got
- 23:02Speaker 1: a pro team here now, so it's is that really true?
- 23:06Speaker 2: You don't care at all what goes on to the jersey.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Surely you have.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Why do I care.
- 23:11Speaker 2: What you can't? So you care? You care?
- 23:14Speaker 3: Well, it depends on me. If you're talking about going
- 23:17Speaker 3: ahead and putting something nefarious on a University of Kentucky jersey,
- 23:22Speaker 3: the sacred piece of flow, people would be okay with that.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Something reasonable.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's two million dollars a year. What
- 23:30Speaker 1: do I care what they put on his jersey?
- 23:31Speaker 2: Exactly? Oh? Notre Dame fans care. And it's like, why
- 23:34Speaker 2: why do you care? So far just gave you the
- 23:37Speaker 2: largest contract in the history of college sports. Why do
- 23:40Speaker 2: you freaking care what SOFI is given you?
- 23:42Speaker 1: Besides where most people are saying they won't go to
- 23:44Speaker 1: see what's on the jersey anyway.
- 23:47Speaker 2: That's the part I don't understand. Why would a company
- 23:50Speaker 2: want to do it when it's so small you can't
- 23:53Speaker 2: see it, So what difference does it make?
- 23:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's about to say I don't know they're doing.
- 23:57Speaker 1: It's just gonna be a little patch or something. Right,
- 23:59Speaker 1: maybe Chris, you have twenty of them.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Well, now you're gettings, car, Yeah, so if you'll probably
- 24:06Speaker 2: put it down the pants leg like they do, Uh,
- 24:09Speaker 2: jockey pants get tattoos. Oh geez, No, Well, I tell
- 24:14Speaker 2: you what if somebody, well I might that might be
- 24:17Speaker 2: the one and only time I might consider. I don't
- 24:20Speaker 2: like tattoos. I've never wanted one. Somebody paid me, you'd
- 24:23Speaker 2: get one, I probably would, Hannah, I mean, I just
- 24:27Speaker 2: I would not tell him it's not permanent, but I'd
- 24:31Speaker 2: go down to Gatlinburg where they had that Hannah stand.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You know where it is, Larry, You're there every other weekend.
- 24:36Speaker 2: So uh, price, right? Absolutely?
- 24:41Speaker 1: I think I think he'd get a real one for
- 24:43Speaker 1: the right price.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Oh geez, if it allowed me to win a Kentucky Derby,
- 24:47Speaker 2: go buy that, right horse, I probably would do it.
- 24:50Speaker 1: See there we go. Yeah, if it may unlimited access
- 24:56Speaker 1: to Willstein, you'd get one.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Oh that's a great idea. No, no, no, it had
- 25:01Speaker 2: to be more than that. It has to be access
- 25:03Speaker 2: to every coach, doesn't matter if they're there anymore or gone.
- 25:08Speaker 2: So when a new one comes in, I get access
- 25:11Speaker 2: to him. Yes, yes, yes, I want a lifetime contract
- 25:16Speaker 2: for that testoo.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So you get a tattoo favorite coach then, no, no,
- 25:21Speaker 1: that's a little match.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well I told you it'd be a high price.
- 25:24Speaker 2: It don't give me that crap, all right, let's talk
- 25:27Speaker 2: about will Stein. I mean, what is your Let's talk
- 25:32Speaker 2: about two things. Number one, John Wong, what is your
- 25:37Speaker 2: expectation for this upcoming year with will Stein's first year
- 25:41Speaker 2: here at u K.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Are you talking about a record one lost.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Record or yes? What else? So what I be talking about?
- 25:49Speaker 3: Well you could there You're different. If I say six
- 25:53Speaker 3: and six, I mean a lot.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Of it will depend on how that six and six gus.
- 25:58Speaker 3: There are six and six records of which you can.
- 26:01Speaker 6: Actually be somewhat disappointed.
- 26:04Speaker 3: But on the other hand, there are six or six
- 26:06Speaker 3: records of which it could be extremely extremely happy. It
- 26:10Speaker 3: all depends on how the team plays, how they progress.
- 26:14Speaker 3: But I'm thinking, okay, let's go ahead and get to
- 26:17Speaker 3: a bowl game.
- 26:18Speaker 4: That's realistic.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Larry Wow, I don't know bowl game realistic. I don't know.
- 26:28Speaker 1: It certainly should be the standard because when Mark Stoops
- 26:31Speaker 1: didn't get the bowl game, he was gone.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, So that's how Mark happened. You've raised the bar exactly.
- 26:41Speaker 2: People get excited and they want more.
- 26:43Speaker 1: But byself, I don't know enough about the team. You
- 26:46Speaker 1: really know what an expectation should be because I haven't
- 26:49Speaker 1: seen many of these guys play and I think maybe
- 26:53Speaker 1: they can be pretty good. But I mean we've heard
- 26:56Speaker 1: some quarterbacks the past couple of years of Kentucky that
- 26:58Speaker 1: were supposed to be I ever walk on water, and
- 27:01Speaker 1: when they got to play football, they couldn't quite do that.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So yeah, if Kenny Minchi is really good, maybe they
- 27:07Speaker 1: can be that good. But if they get the six wins,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think everybody should be jubilant. And I don't think
- 27:13Speaker 1: it's because their schedule is any harder than any other year.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I mean, if you're gonna play nine SEC games, when
- 27:19Speaker 1: you're ever gonna say well, our schedule's easy this year,
- 27:22Speaker 1: you're not. They're not playing the top three team, the
- 27:24Speaker 1: teams that are picked to be one, two and three
- 27:26Speaker 1: in the conference. So to me, sec wise, schedule, that's
- 27:30Speaker 1: about as good as you can hope for. So but
- 27:32Speaker 1: to still to me to sit here and try to
- 27:34Speaker 1: pick out a path where I think they could win six,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, Tennessee they beat them on
- 27:40Speaker 1: once over thirty years, so there's one. I mean, Louis
- 27:46Speaker 1: Louis has been to by a combined seventy points the
- 27:48Speaker 1: last two years, so I mean, how's that go? South
- 27:52Speaker 1: Carolina now is flipped it where they seem to have
- 27:54Speaker 1: Kentucky's numbers. So but again, an new coach, new staff,
- 27:59Speaker 1: coming in, seventy new players, whatever it is, I think
- 28:02Speaker 1: we'll know a whole lot more ato that Alabama game.
- 28:04Speaker 3: They could win.
- 28:06Speaker 4: All those games that you just mentioned. It it's a possibility.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's not like many many years ago when you chop those.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Up as an automatic LT.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Right now, so you're home, it's just uncertainty.
- 28:18Speaker 2: That's us right now.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Well, there's always uncertainty with UK football, But I think
- 28:23Speaker 1: that's kind of the case everywhere right now. You're kind
- 28:25Speaker 1: of uncertain about every team. You don't know how good
- 28:27Speaker 1: a lot of these other teams exactly either. I mean
- 28:29Speaker 1: some of them could be stinky exactly, some of them
- 28:31Speaker 1: could be really great. So that's why makes it so
- 28:34Speaker 1: hard to really predict and set expectations, I think. And
- 28:37Speaker 1: the thing is, you can go from four to eight
- 28:39Speaker 1: to nine and three pretty easy if you bring in
- 28:42Speaker 1: the right people.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Well, and I think kind of the precedence has been
- 28:46Speaker 2: bringing back the big Blue wall, and he certainly has
- 28:49Speaker 2: brought in some big time transfers into the football program
- 28:55Speaker 2: this year, and then hopefully Kenny Minsche turns out to
- 28:58Speaker 2: be a lot better than some people are saying, and
- 29:01Speaker 2: some people aren't saying that.
- 29:04Speaker 1: The only thing hesitation I have about the offensive line, Yes,
- 29:08Speaker 1: as we all hear all the time, Boy, how hard
- 29:11Speaker 1: is it to find great offensive linemen? It's it's really hard, right,
- 29:15Speaker 1: It's what everybody says.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 29:16Speaker 1: So if people he's brought in are as great as
- 29:19Speaker 1: we're hoping or being told they're gonna be, why did
- 29:23Speaker 1: the schools where they were let them leave?
- 29:28Speaker 2: See that's always been my skill. We'll worry exactly. So
- 29:31Speaker 2: if they were so good, why wouldn't they just whatever
- 29:35Speaker 2: it takes to keep them? If you feel like that's
- 29:37Speaker 2: the way with Minschi from a Notre Dame, is that
- 29:40Speaker 2: why he's uh that they just didn't think he was
- 29:43Speaker 2: going to turn out to be a great I still
- 29:45Speaker 2: go back. I know everybody's gonna roll their eyes as
- 29:47Speaker 2: soon as I I still think, uh uh, vander Vandergriff
- 29:53Speaker 2: was better than we really saw because he just had
- 29:57Speaker 2: no time, He had zero offensive line at that time.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I still feel like he would have been a better quarterback,
- 30:03Speaker 2: probably better than Will Levis. Well like that, I'm just
- 30:08Speaker 2: telling you.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Will Levisy just said there was.
- 30:12Speaker 2: About a little bit and we are going to talk
- 30:14Speaker 2: about that, and I'm not gonna.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Go out on that ledge with Rock had such a
- 30:18Speaker 3: bad experience that he retired from exactly right.
- 30:21Speaker 4: It couldn't get much worse than that.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Here.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Here's what's really scary. Also about the offensive line. Kentucky
- 30:27Speaker 3: has paid a lot of money for their own line
- 30:31Speaker 3: this year.
- 30:31Speaker 1: So in we think to him, we don't really know.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Yeah, let's assume that they have.
- 30:36Speaker 3: If they have, and if they don't end up being
- 30:39Speaker 3: any good, then what does that say for the future?
- 30:42Speaker 3: Will they ever ever be any good? The expectations are
- 30:46Speaker 3: super high right now. If you paid a lot of
- 30:48Speaker 3: money for these guys, they better perform. If they don't perform,
- 30:52Speaker 3: then Kentucky's in big, big trouble.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you're really feeling good about your offensive line,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and then to me and then you're thinking, well, we're
- 31:01Speaker 1: gonna be able to run the ball, then why two
- 31:03Speaker 1: weeks ago are you adding two junior college running backs
- 31:06Speaker 1: to the roster.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Well, you look at the wide receiver room, you look
- 31:09Speaker 2: at the running back room, and you get all these
- 31:11Speaker 2: people in there, When are they going to have time
- 31:13Speaker 2: to play? Why are they, Larry Vott adding, all these people.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I don't know. If you get Will Stein on here,
- 31:18Speaker 1: you can ask.
- 31:21Speaker 2: It might be a good question.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Otherwise we'll never know, well because we sitting up here talking,
- 31:25Speaker 1: so I don't know. That was really kind of baffling
- 31:27Speaker 1: to me. They had two junior college running backs a
- 31:30Speaker 1: week and a half for training camp starts, so I
- 31:33Speaker 1: don't know. But they've got so many, like I said,
- 31:36Speaker 1: got so many guys that a lot of these different positions,
- 31:39Speaker 1: and they gat somebody to kind of emerge to be
- 31:41Speaker 1: the go to type guys. And also we will see,
- 31:44Speaker 1: but they're banking on a lot of guys that were
- 31:47Speaker 1: really highly ranked coming out of high school when they
- 31:50Speaker 1: were recruited. Now they're transferred in here coming off some injuries.
- 31:53Speaker 1: There's a little bit non production. But Will's had a
- 31:56Speaker 1: pretty good record of kind of reviving some of those
- 31:58Speaker 1: guys careers. So hope that's what he's gonna be able
- 32:01Speaker 1: to do here.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Larry Vott, is there a player out there you think
- 32:04Speaker 2: that's gonna be a bit of a surprise that you'd
- 32:06Speaker 2: like to talk about. Is there a player that has
- 32:10Speaker 2: been hype that you think is going to be really
- 32:13Speaker 2: good and deserves that hype.
- 32:16Speaker 1: I don't really know. I would hope c J. Baxter
- 32:20Speaker 1: and the running back is going to be that gap.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Maybe maybe Nick Anderson will be that guy. Or maybe
- 32:27Speaker 1: it'll be somebody like a DJ Miller who's already been
- 32:30Speaker 1: here and didn't get used probably as much as I
- 32:32Speaker 1: thought he should have last year. That could be that.
- 32:35Speaker 1: That could be that gay on offense. So but it
- 32:38Speaker 1: all starts with minshe minshe better be that guy.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Is there a surprise player out there where we don't
- 32:44Speaker 2: know the name of yet.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I'm sure there is, but we just don't know's gonna
- 32:50Speaker 1: be a surprise?
- 32:51Speaker 2: John Wong, same question to you. You think there's a
- 32:53Speaker 2: player out there that's deserved all this hype and he
- 32:56Speaker 2: is going to be that player?
- 32:57Speaker 3: Or I hope it's gonna be c J. Baxter because
- 32:59Speaker 3: when you think about it, this guy was wasn't he
- 33:02Speaker 3: the number one high school recruit coming coming out exactly?
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 33:06Speaker 3: Right, So think about number one high school running back
- 33:10Speaker 3: recruit coming out of high school. It's now playing for
- 33:13Speaker 3: the University of Kentucky. When did you ever think that
- 33:16Speaker 3: would happen? Probably never?
- 33:17Speaker 2: Never?
- 33:18Speaker 4: Yeah, probably never.
- 33:20Speaker 3: But here I am listening to Larry Vault and all
- 33:23Speaker 3: his wisdom, and I am actually getting depressed.
- 33:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I'm gone from six wins now go down to probably
- 33:30Speaker 3: about three listening to what Larry has to say. Well,
- 33:34Speaker 3: I'm not just missing it, I'm not just missing questions.
- 33:40Speaker 1: But it's hard to know because you haven't seen it.
- 33:42Speaker 4: That's absolutely true.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Well, see, that was always my issue with UK basketball
- 33:47Speaker 2: when Cal was still here. It's like, how can you
- 33:49Speaker 2: say they're number one in the country and we don't
- 33:51Speaker 2: know who the complete roster is yet I never understood that.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And yet they just counted on Cal bringing in all
- 33:58Speaker 2: these great recruits from high school and they'll be one
- 34:01Speaker 2: of the greatest teams out there. And sometimes it worked
- 34:04Speaker 2: a lot of times it did not. I'm hoping that
- 34:08Speaker 2: UK is that sleeper team. I mean, because what has
- 34:10Speaker 2: changed so much? What has changed from Mark Stoops last
- 34:14Speaker 2: year to will Stein coming in here and creating more
- 34:18Speaker 2: excitement and all the excitement that we have here for
- 34:21Speaker 2: UK football. What do you think the one thing or
- 34:23Speaker 2: is there a couple of things that he's done to
- 34:26Speaker 2: create this excitement to have all these plays or is
- 34:28Speaker 2: it just money?
- 34:30Speaker 3: I ain't his three words because of me. Oh boy,
- 34:34Speaker 3: I think it's that confidence factor. That young guy swashbuckler.
- 34:38Speaker 3: He's coming in and he's gonna kind of change this
- 34:41Speaker 3: entire outlook of the program. We've gone from very very
- 34:45Speaker 3: conservative of Mark Stoops, somebody who's worried about everything that
- 34:50Speaker 3: he says it is going to be taken the wrong way,
- 34:53Speaker 3: to somebody who's not afraid to go out there and pump,
- 34:57Speaker 3: you know, beat his own chest and pumps himself up
- 35:00Speaker 3: and provide confidence for the team themselves. That's changed the
- 35:04Speaker 3: whole mentality of the fan base. And I'll be honest,
- 35:08Speaker 3: I'm I'm sucked into that. I'm excited about I am too.
- 35:11Speaker 2: And the closer you know, sitting right here where we
- 35:13Speaker 2: are at Commonwealth Stadium, the more excited I get. But
- 35:16Speaker 2: you're right, Larry Vaught's bringing me back down. It's like
- 35:18Speaker 2: I just want to reality. I'm to that point now, Larry.
- 35:25Speaker 1: You know in fact that.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 35:32Speaker 1: But when you think about is why are people excited
- 35:34Speaker 1: about Will? I think it goes back to the same
- 35:36Speaker 1: thing that we're excited about with Hell because you think offense, Yes,
- 35:39Speaker 1: most of us have got to see a four game
- 35:42Speaker 1: the way you're seventeen to ten exactly, the fact that
- 35:46Speaker 1: may still be a one touchdown game. We want to
- 35:49Speaker 1: see offense, and we think will Stein is going to
- 35:51Speaker 1: provide offense. I think people get more excited about that.
- 35:55Speaker 1: And will does have a younger overall staff who's kind
- 35:59Speaker 1: of I think helping you to rate some enthusiasm. But
- 36:02Speaker 1: right now it's easy to talk and say all the
- 36:04Speaker 1: right things and Kentucky football fans. The best time of
- 36:08Speaker 1: year for Kentucky football fans is June through August because
- 36:11Speaker 1: we get the docs and you're always optimistic. Kentucky football
- 36:16Speaker 1: fans undefeated. That's why I've always said that this is
- 36:19Speaker 1: a football state, even though a lot of people don't
- 36:21Speaker 1: want to believe it.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 36:23Speaker 1: It's easy to be a UK basketball fan. It used
- 36:26Speaker 1: to be easy because you're winning all the time. Who
- 36:28Speaker 1: like Kentucky football fans came when they were setting through
- 36:31Speaker 1: some bad years of football, tough years, but it came
- 36:34Speaker 1: back year after year after year because they want to
- 36:36Speaker 1: see a good football than.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I remember those first couple of years with Jerry Clayburn. Yeah,
- 36:42Speaker 2: had that one year was oh ten and one. Yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 2: then you had the Bill Curry years and how miserable
- 36:49Speaker 2: that was. And it's like Joker years. Oh the joke.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I completely forgot about Joker Phillips year, because that's one
- 36:56Speaker 2: of the questions. When Rich Brooks was on with me
- 36:59Speaker 2: one time and he said off the air how disappointed
- 37:03Speaker 2: he was. He's like Michael, I'd put all that working
- 37:06Speaker 2: effort into UK football only to see it just completely
- 37:09Speaker 2: go away in one year.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was disappointing. And also I think there's
- 37:13Speaker 1: just a lot of want of belief. People want to
- 37:16Speaker 1: believe in will and hope and I think but just
- 37:18Speaker 1: to talk about offense and Will comes across as a
- 37:21Speaker 1: very confident Yeah, you could say Ericant, but that's okay.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I think the most successful coaches are want you want.
- 37:26Speaker 2: You want your coach.
- 37:27Speaker 1: You don't want him to come there, I hope we
- 37:28Speaker 1: can score right. You want to come and say you
- 37:30Speaker 1: we're gonna score right and all. But still there's just
- 37:32Speaker 1: so many things just to kind of wonder about, and
- 37:34Speaker 1: the transfer portal era just makes it harder. Me. If
- 37:37Speaker 1: you've got an offensive line, you've watched the progress for
- 37:39Speaker 1: four years, you think of, wow, these guys, we have
- 37:42Speaker 1: a much bigger they are there's they're better. They've been here,
- 37:44Speaker 1: they've all played together. I mean, we all grew up
- 37:46Speaker 1: listing every coach you knew talk about, well, you've got
- 37:49Speaker 1: to have continuity of that offensive line actually changing people
- 37:52Speaker 1: in and out of there. They've got to play together
- 37:54Speaker 1: three or four years. And now it's like, let's just
- 37:57Speaker 1: get seven new ones every year and throw them in there,
- 37:59Speaker 1: so maybe they'll be the best offensive line ever in Kentucky.
- 38:03Speaker 2: But I still got to see it, Yeah, I and
- 38:05Speaker 2: I completely understand that. That's my heart gets going and
- 38:08Speaker 2: my heart gets pumped and blood gets gets flowing. It's like,
- 38:11Speaker 2: this is gonna be exciting, exciting, But then the realistic
- 38:13Speaker 2: side comes out, and that's that's the voice in my
- 38:16Speaker 2: head is Larry Vaught right there. So uh, anyway, we
- 38:19Speaker 2: gotta take a break.
- 38:21Speaker 4: I don't have.
- 38:24Speaker 2: We're gonna take a break. This is just the cats,
- 38:26Speaker 2: stay right there.
- 38:30Speaker 6: Don't think I'm so sad, nobody, Oh.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Man, we are. We are playing some music today. I'll
- 39:03Speaker 2: tell you that right now. I don't know if Larry
- 39:05Speaker 2: Vod or John Wang would approve of any of this
- 39:08Speaker 2: music here justin but it's it's okay. I I it's
- 39:11Speaker 2: it's it's unique and I'm enjoying it, so thank you
- 39:14Speaker 2: very much. But instead of justin being with us today,
- 39:18Speaker 2: we got doctor John Wong as well as uh Larry
- 39:22Speaker 2: Vaud two is with us, and it's it's this has
- 39:24Speaker 2: been a lot of fun. I do enjoy having both
- 39:27Speaker 2: of you on because, uh, you know, you're both hard,
- 39:29Speaker 2: especially Larry Vodd. It is really hard to handle every
- 39:31Speaker 2: now and then. But uh uh well, let's let's get
- 39:34Speaker 2: to a couple of the texts right now. Scooter Dingus
- 39:40Speaker 2: texted in and said, the TBT jerseys had four logos
- 39:45Speaker 2: by my count, and they didn't look bad. Did y'all
- 39:49Speaker 2: notice those last night? All right, yesterday afternoon? I did.
- 39:53Speaker 3: I I wasn't at the games, but I was watching
- 39:56Speaker 3: on TV, so sometimes you get a little bit better
- 39:58Speaker 3: close up shots of those logos when you're watching on television.
- 40:03Speaker 3: But I remember one of them was kind of orange,
- 40:07Speaker 3: and I didn't like the contrast with the blue associated
- 40:11Speaker 3: with that.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Well, I tell you that they need to be able
- 40:13Speaker 1: to get more of those, because I think last night,
- 40:16Speaker 1: from what I'm told like sponsorship money, that the team
- 40:20Speaker 1: that won the tournament had about four times the sponsorship
- 40:23Speaker 1: money that the Kentucky team has.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Really.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Yeah, did you see that, David Steel? People are having
- 40:30Speaker 1: that cash in the locker room after they won, just
- 40:33Speaker 1: giving them handfuls of really something like you could have
- 40:35Speaker 1: done after your horse wins.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, okay, yeah, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Ok.
- 40:40Speaker 1: They weren't waiting on the tv T to get them
- 40:42Speaker 1: two media. They were pacing that cash. But they had
- 40:44Speaker 1: a substantially more sponsorship money than what the law Fa
- 40:48Speaker 1: Melia team does. So if they're gonna be able to
- 40:51Speaker 1: want them to compete, they're going to be able to
- 40:53Speaker 1: raise more sponsorship money.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Did it bother you that it's a Kentucky company that
- 40:57Speaker 2: sponsored that team and it beat the UK company because
- 41:00Speaker 2: it wasn't that wasn't much of a game yesterday, wasn't
- 41:02Speaker 2: no better team won? Yeah? Clearly.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Yeah, the deeper, more athletic, and younger team, I think.
- 41:09Speaker 2: So.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Now I didn't bother me that that's what they want
- 41:11Speaker 1: to spend their money on. Yeah, I'm sure that's what
- 41:13Speaker 1: they thought they did, and they they spend.
- 41:15Speaker 2: It on La Familia though, is what I would ask them.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Why why would they want to sponsor a completely separate
- 41:21Speaker 2: team and not a team here, and unless they're Western
- 41:23Speaker 2: Kentucky fans. The only thing I can't think of, No.
- 41:26Speaker 1: They they've been sponsors of the La Famela team in
- 41:28Speaker 1: the past, but they just switched their sponsorship over and
- 41:32Speaker 1: I guess it paid all for them.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Clearly it did well. Does it pay off to them?
- 41:38Speaker 2: They didn't win any money, just the players win the money.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Had you ever heard of David Steele before fair?
- 41:45Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, well i'd probably. I know where the place
- 41:48Speaker 2: is because you passed right by it going down to Nashville.
- 41:51Speaker 2: You've passed it. Have you ever noticed it? I didn't
- 41:54Speaker 2: pay attention to the name, but I.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Know exactly where it is right there in Casey County.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I didn't know that moved to russ Yeah.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Why would they move from Casey County to Russell Springs?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Maybe too much competition gatewise and all they're in Casey
- 42:06Speaker 1: County than the gate capital of the world.
- 42:08Speaker 2: The fence competition. Okay, so there might be some fencing
- 42:11Speaker 2: wars down there.
- 42:13Speaker 3: I'm not sure there's a direct payoff in terms of
- 42:17Speaker 3: a patch on a Jersey versus more more revenue for
- 42:22Speaker 3: your business. For example, if we were to put just
- 42:25Speaker 3: the katz on the University Kentucky basketball jersey.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Do you do you think that would truly draw a
- 42:30Speaker 4: lot more?
- 42:32Speaker 2: Well, see, that's a question I asked last week.
- 42:34Speaker 3: It wouldn't be banged for enough bank for the buck.
- 42:36Speaker 3: It wouldn't be good return on investment.
- 42:38Speaker 2: In my mind, it'd be good for your ego. Sure, absolutely,
- 42:42Speaker 2: it'd make Michael, It'd make me look very proud of myself. Look,
- 42:46Speaker 2: I'm sponsoring that team right down there, just like with
- 42:48Speaker 2: so far. So far have spent all that money with
- 42:52Speaker 2: Notre Dame. Will they get any return from all that money?
- 42:55Speaker 2: I find it hard to be because you know they
- 42:57Speaker 2: they got the Sofi Stadium where the MS and the
- 43:00Speaker 2: Chargers play. Uh and But honestly, I wouldn't have known
- 43:05Speaker 2: them otherwise if that wasn't the case.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Those people, those people make money somehow. They must know
- 43:10Speaker 1: what they're doing.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Clearly, A lot of times, I think all these sponsorships,
- 43:14Speaker 3: especially for sports programs, when you're sitting in stadiums and
- 43:18Speaker 3: you see all these things lined up on the outfield wall,
- 43:21Speaker 3: I don't think they're really really improving the revenue stream
- 43:26Speaker 3: of the sponsorship of the sponsors who are doing that,
- 43:31Speaker 3: the sponsors feel like that they're somehow being a part
- 43:34Speaker 3: of the program, that they're contributing in some way. It's
- 43:37Speaker 3: their way of being invested in the program itself. I
- 43:41Speaker 3: don't really think they're getting any money from it.
- 43:43Speaker 1: We can't have you on our high school fundraising team.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Then this is him being realistic, like you are selling sponsorships.
- 43:55Speaker 3: I'm talking specifically about patches on jerseys and signs in
- 43:59Speaker 3: the outfield. There are things like radio. Radio works. On radio, it.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Works, yeah, exactly right there. Well I will find I'll
- 44:10Speaker 2: tell you a story. So I'm at a Tropicana field
- 44:14Speaker 2: down Saint Petersburg watching a Tampa Bay Rays game, and
- 44:17Speaker 2: a buddy of mine who's the president of a Republic
- 44:20Speaker 2: bank in Louisville, said, Michael, you need to come sit
- 44:24Speaker 2: in our seats. And I'm like, really, y'all have seats
- 44:26Speaker 2: down here. He's like, Michael, we have banks in Saint Petersburg.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Do you not know it? Look up, there's Republic Bank
- 44:33Speaker 2: advertising at Tropicana Field. And I had never noticed it before.
- 44:38Speaker 1: But now you get their seats, So you're happy.
- 44:40Speaker 2: I'm getting free seats exactly. I mean, I probably while
- 44:44Speaker 2: we're sitting here at commonweal see I have probably noticed
- 44:47Speaker 2: Larry Vought, John Wong, the Keenland up there, the advertisement,
- 44:51Speaker 2: but I've never noticed the Central Bank, maybe Kentucky Farm Bureau.
- 44:57Speaker 2: I've never noticed UK Health. I mean, I just when
- 45:00Speaker 2: I'm looking up there for the scores of other games,
- 45:03Speaker 2: I'm I'm not paying attention what advertisements are coming across.
- 45:07Speaker 2: I'm waiting for them to hurry up and show me
- 45:08Speaker 2: the stinking scores. I don't care about the stupid the
- 45:11Speaker 2: advertisements or anything. I know that sounds kind of rude,
- 45:14Speaker 2: but it is.
- 45:16Speaker 4: I think you're not.
- 45:17Speaker 3: That's pretty much how most of the people sitting in
- 45:20Speaker 3: the stud.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Now, the president of Central Bank maybe feel a sense
- 45:26Speaker 3: of pride when he sees that that sign out there.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I got sign right right here.
- 45:33Speaker 1: I think there's count lef. He keeps seeing it, seeing
- 45:36Speaker 1: it and seeing it. Sometime that if repetition it pays off.
- 45:40Speaker 1: I think that's what they're hoping for.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well, I before we have to take a
- 45:44Speaker 2: heard break in a couple months, what did y'all think about?
- 45:47Speaker 2: You brought it up a minute ago Larry about Will
- 45:49Speaker 2: Levis and his comments about there are thirty two quarterbacks
- 45:54Speaker 2: out there and they can't. There's can't be thirty two
- 45:56Speaker 2: quarterbacks out there better than me.
- 45:58Speaker 1: I think that's what he should say. If you're gonna
- 46:00Speaker 1: keep playing, that's what you gotta believe, don't you think?
- 46:03Speaker 1: And I don't know that I'd totally disagree with him.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Oh really?
- 46:06Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 46:06Speaker 2: Okay, So you think he is good enough to play
- 46:10Speaker 2: in the NFL as a quarterback?
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he came on the right team. I don't think
- 46:14Speaker 1: he's probably on the team he can maybe do for
- 46:16Speaker 1: the Titans. Be on a better team, he would be
- 46:18Speaker 1: the right team for him.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Then that's exactly what I thought. None of them.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Well, somebody's got a better defense and a little bit
- 46:26Speaker 1: better offensive line.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yeah, John, what was the first thought you had when
- 46:30Speaker 2: you read that?
- 46:32Speaker 3: You know, I'm I'm thinking to myself, all right, you
- 46:34Speaker 3: gotta you gotta show me something first. If you're somebody
- 46:38Speaker 3: like a Kurt Signetti who's won a national championship, you
- 46:42Speaker 3: should be able to say anything that you want.
- 46:44Speaker 4: And he has been you know, he's.
- 46:46Speaker 3: Been throwing darts at the SEC and all that, but
- 46:50Speaker 3: he's also earned the right to do that. If you
- 46:52Speaker 3: haven't earned the right to do that. You might want
- 46:56Speaker 3: to be a little bit careful. As a fan, I
- 46:58Speaker 3: love hearing it, I love seeing it. But as a
- 47:01Speaker 3: human being, you know, we talk about pride and humility
- 47:05Speaker 3: and all that. You want to be a little bit
- 47:06Speaker 3: careful because.
- 47:09Speaker 1: I'm not good enough. Nobody should have me on their team.
- 47:12Speaker 1: He can't say that he wants.
- 47:14Speaker 3: In the competition. In the world of competition, you've got
- 47:17Speaker 3: to be that way.
- 47:18Speaker 1: To say what, I'm not good enough? No, didn't surprise me.
- 47:25Speaker 1: That's how he was here. I mean, he was pretty
- 47:27Speaker 1: confident his ability when he was here.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Well, I I looked at it and I thought, oh boy,
- 47:33Speaker 2: because I listen, he's a great athlete. Did I think
- 47:36Speaker 2: he was a good quarterback at UK? He was okay,
- 47:39Speaker 2: he was pretty good. But to look at him and
- 47:42Speaker 2: think that there is a spot for him on an
- 47:45Speaker 2: NFL team, I just I don't see it. Well right now,
- 47:49Speaker 2: isn't he Yeah, but but he's on the roster, but
- 47:51Speaker 2: he's not going to start, And I just don't see
- 47:53Speaker 2: him doing that. I really don't. But we got to
- 47:56Speaker 2: take a hard break right now. If you want to
- 47:57Speaker 2: join us, you can Texas on the Whiskey thief text
- 47:59Speaker 2: on two four one four fourteen fifty. Stay right there.
- 48:03Speaker 2: We got one more hour and hopefully coach will Stein
- 48:06Speaker 2: will be joining us too, so stay right there.
- 48:07Speaker 5: This is Just the Cats, the money playing fellaws like,
- 48:13Speaker 5: tell me please don't shoot up to play because I
- 48:20Speaker 5: see somebody.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 48:34Speaker 2: All right, our number two, Just the Cat says we're
- 48:37Speaker 2: coming to you live from Commonwealth Stadium over in Lexington.
- 48:40Speaker 2: It's it's trying to spit rain, but thank goodness, it's
- 48:43Speaker 2: holding off. I I I would have sworn up and down.
- 48:46Speaker 2: It would have been pouring down. But anyway, I uh,
- 48:50Speaker 2: I'm glad it's held off. I'm a little surprised, but
- 48:52Speaker 2: I've got John Wong as well as Larry Vaught with me.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Uh and hopefully in a little bit. I was just
- 48:58Speaker 2: told coaches running a little late, we'll have Stein joining us,
- 49:01Speaker 2: uh for a little bit. But as Larry Vought laughs
- 49:04Speaker 2: at me, but I listen, you gotta be Larry, Larry,
- 49:07Speaker 2: You and I need to stick around each other because
- 49:08Speaker 2: you know what, I'm gonna bring that optimism up for you. You
- 49:12Speaker 2: gotta stop being the pessimistic one. We need optimism. Okay,
- 49:16Speaker 2: so just move on, let's go.
- 49:18Speaker 1: So no facts, that's what you're saying.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Okay, John Walk please please help me with this guy
- 49:27Speaker 2: over here. No facts. Yeah, I don't like the facts.
- 49:31Speaker 2: That's why I watch the news every night at six
- 49:33Speaker 2: o'clock because there's no facts. I'm just kidding. I said, Well,
- 49:37Speaker 2: maybe I'm not kidding, but no response for being the
- 49:42Speaker 2: one Bee.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I love that You're not gonna get well, I don't
- 49:45Speaker 1: think because I'm just looking. I believe he's still got
- 49:47Speaker 1: to get his picture taken with his family. He's gotta do.
- 49:50Speaker 1: He started as his press conference at nine thirty, so
- 49:53Speaker 1: maybe he was jump in here for right quick.
- 49:55Speaker 3: Yeah, speaking of his press conference, Larry, what what do
- 49:58Speaker 3: you expect to come out out of that?
- 50:00Speaker 1: Nothing? Nothing? I mean, I mean nothing new. I mean,
- 50:04Speaker 1: look look how I mean he's spent there. He spent
- 50:07Speaker 1: four hours at the SEC media days, I mean, and
- 50:10Speaker 1: he's very open. He answers anything you ask.
- 50:13Speaker 2: He said, got.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Lunching here, has been different places talking. I just really
- 50:18Speaker 1: can't think of anything he's suddenly going to spring out
- 50:20Speaker 1: there today coming out Yeah, that's what I meant. I
- 50:24Speaker 1: think he'll answer anything that he's asked, but I just
- 50:27Speaker 1: know what information or question you could really ask is
- 50:30Speaker 1: going to be way different.
- 50:30Speaker 3: I think he will address the general manager position, and.
- 50:35Speaker 1: I think he'll skirt around it. I think he'll give
- 50:38Speaker 1: an answer without saying a whole well, depending on if
- 50:40Speaker 1: somebody asking. Somebody's got to be the.
- 50:42Speaker 4: One thing that I'd like to hear from from this something.
- 50:45Speaker 3: New, because he's really not address it's kind of been
- 50:48Speaker 3: the elephant in the room right now, ever since we've
- 50:51Speaker 3: heard him speak down to the SEC media days. You know,
- 50:54Speaker 3: this new development with the abrupt resignation. What's what's really
- 50:59Speaker 3: going on with Batus.
- 51:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and from a purely selfish personal view, I'd like
- 51:05Speaker 1: to know why every player on the football team's not
- 51:08Speaker 1: available for interviews at media day. That's what media day
- 51:10Speaker 1: is supposed to be about.
- 51:11Speaker 3: That's also something extremely different. I'm looking around and it
- 51:14Speaker 3: looks like they've got all the different kents set up
- 51:18Speaker 3: with all the different positions, But it's not going to
- 51:21Speaker 3: be like it used to be where we had access
- 51:24Speaker 3: to everybody.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no assistant coach, no assistant coaches available today
- 51:28Speaker 1: at all. But as I was told last year at Oregon,
- 51:32Speaker 1: the media day consisted of of the head coach and
- 51:34Speaker 1: four players.
- 51:36Speaker 2: So he's just kind of following the same act from there.
- 51:39Speaker 1: I think there's about twenty players available today, but again
- 51:44Speaker 1: there's like I requested nine four the nine I requested
- 51:48Speaker 1: not available. Yeah, because, like I say, as John and
- 51:50Speaker 1: I thought, we're not wanting just to ask about what
- 51:53Speaker 1: do they think about Alabama. We're looking to try to
- 51:55Speaker 1: get some kind of personal information, some feature type information. Sorry,
- 51:59Speaker 1: if you want to right at a month from now,
- 52:01Speaker 1: you can talk to a guy about it. Right at that,
- 52:03Speaker 1: you know, right you can't really talk about during the
- 52:05Speaker 1: season and all, but that just puts a limit on
- 52:08Speaker 1: it today. So byself, I just wondered why what he
- 52:12Speaker 1: thought somebody was going to say that they didn't need
- 52:14Speaker 1: to say, or what they're going to be doing for
- 52:16Speaker 1: that forty five minutes. It's so important they couldn't be
- 52:18Speaker 1: out here for media see.
- 52:19Speaker 2: And I understand you're disappointed. I think all three of
- 52:23Speaker 2: us would be disappointed from that standpoint, but it's just different.
- 52:25Speaker 2: This is it's a new era. It's going to be
- 52:27Speaker 2: different as far as that goes. And and yeah, we're
- 52:30Speaker 2: disappointed about it as.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Well, But I just would like that explanation as to why. Yeah,
- 52:34Speaker 1: I mean, what differences make whether twenty players are out
- 52:36Speaker 1: there forty five?
- 52:39Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, do you have any idea why?
- 52:42Speaker 1: No, I don't have a clue. That's why I can't
- 52:44Speaker 1: because there's nothing to hide, That's what I'm saying. I mean,
- 52:47Speaker 1: who's going to come out here on med today as
- 52:48Speaker 1: a player and knowing they want to play at the
- 52:51Speaker 1: universit connected here and say, yeah, our coaches suck, you know,
- 52:53Speaker 1: they don't know what they're doing and why they don't
- 52:55Speaker 1: have me starting nobody They're all going to come out
- 52:57Speaker 1: and say the best things possible. Yeah, this is if
- 52:59Speaker 1: you chance to dig into a little bit more about
- 53:01Speaker 1: their backgrounds, where are they from, you know, maybe they
- 53:04Speaker 1: got some different unique hobby and stuff like that. This
- 53:07Speaker 1: is really the only day of the year you can
- 53:09Speaker 1: get to spend time talking with them about that. You're
- 53:11Speaker 1: not going to get that after a game. You're not
- 53:13Speaker 1: going to get that after a practice. This is a
- 53:15Speaker 1: day where you kind of have a chance to delve
- 53:17Speaker 1: into personalities and do storytelling because it's not like do
- 53:20Speaker 1: you speaking. You can come over to see who you
- 53:22Speaker 1: want when you want.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, why can't they do the same thing like
- 53:26Speaker 3: the University of Kentucky women's basketball team did last week.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Now, everybody was available, everybody was summer.
- 53:32Speaker 3: And I got I probably got more from that. I've
- 53:36Speaker 3: got enough from that to last me the entire year.
- 53:39Speaker 3: Because you had the freedom to just talk to anybody.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Else like you know them a little bit better.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Now there wasn't somebody hovering over you making sure that
- 53:46Speaker 3: you didn't ask the wrong question and give you the
- 53:49Speaker 3: stink eye.
- 53:50Speaker 4: You know, Michael, you know what I'm talking about.
- 53:52Speaker 2: I have no idea what you're talking about. It's but
- 53:58Speaker 2: you know why. You know why I do because.
- 54:00Speaker 8: He's asking that people exactly nobody and I'm not picking
- 54:05Speaker 8: on either one of you.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Nobody asked him. And people tell Michael wanted to ask
- 54:09Speaker 2: these questions, and I'll go up there and ask. And
- 54:12Speaker 2: it's just because I listen, this is a fun job
- 54:15Speaker 2: for me. If I lost this job in the UK
- 54:17Speaker 2: didn't give me a credential, it doesn't bother me. And
- 54:20Speaker 2: I feel like that not you, not you John, not
- 54:24Speaker 2: you Larry. But I feel like there are some media
- 54:26Speaker 2: members out there they're a little afraid to because of
- 54:28Speaker 2: the fact that there might be repercussions. There's a lot,
- 54:31Speaker 2: and so therefore I don't want to be that way.
- 54:35Speaker 2: I want to be the guy that's kind of outside
- 54:36Speaker 2: the box. That's why I asked certain questions to certain
- 54:39Speaker 2: people that guess what, after I'd asked those questions, I'd
- 54:42Speaker 2: get the phone call Michael, you can't ask those questions.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Part of it was your timing, though I don't care
- 54:48Speaker 2: about the time, and I don't care about the time.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Ends with John Caliperry, he asked why he didn't play
- 54:53Speaker 3: his bench enough. You know, first question right out of
- 54:56Speaker 3: the gate.
- 54:57Speaker 2: That might have been the only time I got, though
- 54:59Speaker 2: everybody don't when you got it. Well, there was that
- 55:02Speaker 2: goof that has another show in about an hour that said,
- 55:05Speaker 2: you can't ask the question that that can't be the
- 55:07Speaker 2: first less one that might be my only opportunity asked
- 55:11Speaker 2: that question. I'm asking it and I'm not going to change.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't blame you go for it.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Well, he's making fun of John Hogg making fun of me.
- 55:20Speaker 2: I mean, I'm gonna do that. Here comes the greatest
- 55:24Speaker 2: s I d in the all of college sports. It
- 55:28Speaker 2: says I he looks fantastic put a microphone on him
- 55:32Speaker 2: for Terry Neely. Uh, Sports, all right, that's all right
- 55:38Speaker 2: by yeah, Terry, I know that. I Tony Neely, I
- 55:43Speaker 2: am so sorry to sports maybe the best introduction in
- 55:48Speaker 2: the history of intersections. Well, you know, I messed up
- 55:53Speaker 2: my wife's name on the altar when we were getting married,
- 55:55Speaker 2: so she still swears to this day we're not married.
- 55:58Speaker 2: So Tony Neely, Uh, you are ahead as a sports
- 56:01Speaker 2: information director for the University Kentucky. I mean, this is
- 56:04Speaker 2: how many years you've been at UK starting my thirty
- 56:07Speaker 2: third year. Congratulations because you came up here from Vanderbilt University, yes,
- 56:12Speaker 2: and lived in Lexingon ever since. And when is a
- 56:16Speaker 2: day like this for you? I mean, coming here thirty
- 56:19Speaker 2: three years of doing this, do you get excited? It's like,
- 56:22Speaker 2: oh geez, here we go again. I mean because you
- 56:24Speaker 2: got a brand new football coach, you got brand new everything.
- 56:28Speaker 9: On a day like this, Yeah, football media day is
- 56:31Speaker 9: always excited. I mean you're always undefeated at that point.
- 56:33Speaker 9: There's always fresh and optimistic. But you know, I think
- 56:37Speaker 9: we concentrate actually more on trying to get everything done
- 56:42Speaker 9: because we're trying to pack a whole lot of things
- 56:44Speaker 9: in a two and a half hour period. The phrase
- 56:47Speaker 9: I use is we're trying to put ten pounds of
- 56:49Speaker 9: mud and a five pound sack, and.
- 56:51Speaker 2: So maybe manure, but I think mud it's probably better.
- 56:55Speaker 2: MUD's better. That's better.
- 56:57Speaker 9: So it's it's a very hectic day and we've got
- 56:59Speaker 9: everything playing down at the last minute, and so it's
- 57:02Speaker 9: a little bit of tints just to make sure we
- 57:05Speaker 9: get everything done because the coaches want to get on
- 57:07Speaker 9: to the next thing.
- 57:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 57:08Speaker 9: It's not like, well, we can just hang around here
- 57:10Speaker 9: until we get it all done. We got to do
- 57:11Speaker 9: it because they've got, you know, plays for the stuff.
- 57:14Speaker 9: So anyway, but it seems to always work out.
- 57:18Speaker 2: The one question we've been talking about is media days
- 57:22Speaker 2: a little different, And I don't want to put you
- 57:23Speaker 2: on the spot, and hopefully it's not an uncomfortable question
- 57:26Speaker 2: for you, but it's completely different than what we're accustomed to.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Only a certain number of players coming out, one coach,
- 57:32Speaker 2: no assistant coaches.
- 57:34Speaker 9: Why the change, Well, just every coach has a way
- 57:38Speaker 9: he wants to do things and way wants to prioritize things.
- 57:42Speaker 9: So we're doing that this year. We will have in
- 57:46Speaker 9: addition to the head coach. We'll have news commerce today
- 57:49Speaker 9: with coach Sloan coach Bateman, the offensive defensive coordinators, and
- 57:52Speaker 9: then our assistant coaches will be available one each day
- 57:55Speaker 9: during pre season camps, so they will be available, just
- 57:58Speaker 9: not today.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Yeah, because you know, we're used to seeing the entire
- 58:02Speaker 2: team here and it's different just seeing a couple of
- 58:04Speaker 2: things out here. And but it's okay. I mean I
- 58:07Speaker 2: figured that was the case. He wants to do it
- 58:10Speaker 2: his way, and I get it. How's it been working
- 58:14Speaker 2: with will Stein so far? It has been great.
- 58:16Speaker 9: I tell you, I have been incredibly impressed with the
- 58:23Speaker 9: intensity and passion of Coach Stein and this entire coaching staff.
- 58:31Speaker 2: And it's not just a random energy. It is a very.
- 58:34Speaker 9: Focused, intentional energy.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 58:38Speaker 9: They know what they want to do and they get
- 58:41Speaker 9: after it. You know, everybody's the popular cliche is, well
- 58:45Speaker 9: they hit the ground running. This group hit the ground
- 58:48Speaker 9: sprinting and they haven't stopped.
- 58:51Speaker 2: So I have just been.
- 58:52Speaker 9: Incredibly impressed with the first how many ever months it is,
- 58:57Speaker 9: for the first seven months, eight months that they have
- 59:00Speaker 9: been here, what they've been able to accomplish.
- 59:02Speaker 2: You look at the transfer portal. We ranked tenth in the.
- 59:06Speaker 9: Country as far as our exactly, folks, Yeah, tenth in
- 59:09Speaker 9: the country and the transfer portal, and you look at
- 59:12Speaker 9: recruiting for next year. Of course I can't get any
- 59:15Speaker 9: individuals or anything like that.
- 59:17Speaker 2: But be more specific, but you say our high.
- 59:20Speaker 9: School recruiting for next year has gone very very well.
- 59:24Speaker 9: So I think that's reflective of again the passion and
- 59:29Speaker 9: intensity and intentionality of this group.
- 59:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I know you're ready for football season to
- 59:33Speaker 2: start because that's one of the more exciting seasons since
- 59:36Speaker 2: you're of course, you're ahead of all the sports information.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Break near and dear to your heart is the football
- 59:42Speaker 2: program because you've worked closely with the coaches a number
- 59:45Speaker 2: of years since you've been here at the university.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:48Speaker 9: Well, when it came here as primary contact for football
- 59:50Speaker 9: and stayed that way for twenty one years, and then
- 59:53Speaker 9: the job just grew so much that it just wasn't
- 59:57Speaker 9: most efficient for me to try to oversee the off
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: and be the primary contact for football.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: So we put Susan in that role.
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: But I help her with football because I've you know,
- 1:00:07Speaker 9: just been around it so long about the knowledge and
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: all those kind of things. But try to keep my
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: hand my fingers in all all twenty three sports, but
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: only got ten fingers and sports.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: That's a job trying to do that. This is the
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: man that we all as media members suck up to.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: I mean, we always have to be nice in We
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: can't say a bad word to him. I mean, we
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: just and we loved Terry, Tony whatever your name is,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Tony Neely. But thank you for coming on a few
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: minutes and spending some time with us.
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: Tony, Well, thank you, but I'm just impressed, thank you
- 1:00:38Speaker 9: for coming in all the way from Louisville to do
- 1:00:40Speaker 9: your show here this morning on media Day.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Greatly appreciate that.
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: And and I know you've got some folks coming later
- 1:00:47Speaker 9: on and just glad to have you here.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Thanks for making that trip. Absolutely, you're my favorite, Tony.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: I mean, of all the s IDs I've ever worked with,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: he's the only one. He's my favorite, bar none, am
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: I right? Just look at Larry Vod Yeah but yeah,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: but Larry John on the spot.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Now, one of these days you'll actually get his name, right.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we're gonna take a quick break, and
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: when we come back, Coach will Stein's going to join us.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Stay right there more Justicat's coming right up. That was Tony,
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Bob and Nick pluck me and watch me domin shout.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: It's looking like a bow food all right. If you're
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: just joining us now, Coach will Stein is sitting here
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: with us. Right here, Coach is good to have you
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: on again for a couple of minutes. I know you're
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: getting ready to head in there. Uh as you know
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: you're experiencing. We're watching you with your family down here
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: getting your picture taken. What's going to be the most
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: exciting part that you look forward to when you approach
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: your first game?
- 1:01:58Speaker 10: Well, right now it's uh being done for for the
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: most part, with with talking to media and getting back.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: You know, the last thing you want to do is
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: look at this.
- 1:02:06Speaker 10: We enjoying it for sure, but now it's time to
- 1:02:11Speaker 10: walk the walk and time to get out there and practice.
- 1:02:13Speaker 10: And we've been talking for a long time about what
- 1:02:16Speaker 10: we are planning on doing and what we want to
- 1:02:18Speaker 10: do with this program. Now it's about going out there
- 1:02:20Speaker 10: and performing, and it starts with our practice. It starts
- 1:02:22Speaker 10: here on Thursday.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: You look at what you keep bringing in more play.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: You got a really large wide receiver room, you got
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: a really large, now even more large, a larger running
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: back room. Why are you bringing in more? Continue to
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: bring back in more players.
- 1:02:36Speaker 10: We want to add add as much depth as we can
- 1:02:38Speaker 10: to this roster. You know, I'm big on strength and numbers,
- 1:02:41Speaker 10: and the more players that we can have they can
- 1:02:43Speaker 10: play winning football, the more it's gonna help us, you know,
- 1:02:46Speaker 10: in late October November, when everybody's beat up in this
- 1:02:48Speaker 10: league and you gotta go win football games. So we
- 1:02:51Speaker 10: we obviously want to have as much quality football players
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: as we can. And so when we had the ability
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: to add two more running backs to our roster from
- 1:02:59Speaker 10: the junior college rank, we jumped all on it.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Did you know a little bit what was going on
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: with your general manager before it happened? Did you know
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: this was coming? Was that a bit of a little
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: bit of a down or for you knowing that you
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: were going to be losing him or with him having
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: and then bringing Knacta as your GM.
- 1:03:19Speaker 10: Now, yeah, it goes back to strength and numbers. Like
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: Pete is somebody I have known since I was eighteen
- 1:03:24Speaker 10: years old, trust him with my life. Has been in
- 1:03:27Speaker 10: football for a long time, played and coached under Bobby
- 1:03:29Speaker 10: Petrino and knows the game inside and out, so to
- 1:03:33Speaker 10: be able to add Pete to our staff. When I
- 1:03:36Speaker 10: first got here as one of my first early hires,
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: I knew it was an opportunity for him to continue
- 1:03:40Speaker 10: to grow and if his moment came that we put
- 1:03:42Speaker 10: him in place. So we're excited about Pete and what
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: he's going to do for us. And yeah, you can
- 1:03:48Speaker 10: never you never know what's going to happen on a
- 1:03:49Speaker 10: day to day basis at times, especially in college football,
- 1:03:52Speaker 10: So you just wake up the next day, the show
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: rose on and we keep pushing.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: How's the blue feel on there? I mean, you you
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: were as a player red, you're wearing the blue. Does
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: it feel any different? Does it feel a little better
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: because y' know you grew up as a gigate like
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: all three of us, huge fans of the UK football.
- 1:04:10Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean my favorite colors have been blue and
- 1:04:11Speaker 10: green my whole life. Blue for Kentucky and green for
- 1:04:14Speaker 10: Trinity High School.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: How about you, mat money.
- 1:04:16Speaker 10: You're making all the money in the world now, so no,
- 1:04:19Speaker 10: it's it definitely is. It feels extremely comfortable when I
- 1:04:22Speaker 10: when I put it back on when I was hired. Initially,
- 1:04:25Speaker 10: it felt right at home. So it's a it's a
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: great color.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of players that have been
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: hyped up on this team, obviously Kenny Minshee, and then
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: you got the big running back room, you got the
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: offensive line that you're rebuilding. Thank goodness, I think John Schlarman,
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: God rest his soul. What a great friend he was,
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: uh and a great coach for the university. It's good
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: to see that you're building that back up to Is
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: there a player that nobody knows about that you're kind
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: of in the back of your mind real excited about
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: getting out there on the field.
- 1:04:57Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean I think there's there's a multitude of
- 1:04:59Speaker 10: the on our entire roster. I think we have good,
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: good players on each side of the ball that, like
- 1:05:04Speaker 10: I mentioned, could play winning football. And so that's what
- 1:05:07Speaker 10: fall camp is really about, is Okay, we installed our
- 1:05:11Speaker 10: initial schemes in winter and spring and again in summer.
- 1:05:14Speaker 10: Now it's about seeing what these guys can do. Being
- 1:05:16Speaker 10: the fourth time they've heard these calls and the fourth
- 1:05:19Speaker 10: time they've learned it, can they go out and execute
- 1:05:21Speaker 10: at a high rate? And so, yeah, there's plenty of
- 1:05:25Speaker 10: young guys on our roster on both sides of the
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: ball that I'm excited about.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Because I love it's all about you know, it's because
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: of me. I love that you said that. I love
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: the confidence that you instilled in this program and the
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: coaching staff. Your prediction on how you're going to do
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: this year, Well, we.
- 1:05:42Speaker 10: Want to improve every single week, you know. That's to me.
- 1:05:44Speaker 10: The biggest sign of a successful program and a championship
- 1:05:47Speaker 10: level program is do they get better from week one
- 1:05:49Speaker 10: to week twelve? And honestly, Michael, do we get better
- 1:05:52Speaker 10: from practice one to fall camp to practice two? And
- 1:05:55Speaker 10: when we look up at the end of the season,
- 1:05:56Speaker 10: we're gonna be really proud.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: All Right, coach, I know you gotta go. Appreciate you coming.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: Y'all want to ask a question before you go.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: Real quick thing. Michael mentioned that we are all lifelong
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: followers of University of Kentucky football, and when a new
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: coach comes in new regime, people expect a whole lot
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: of changes, wholesale changes. So let me ask you, coach,
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: what is one thing that you've really liked about the
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: University of Kentucky football program that you have not changed
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: that you want to see continue to propagate.
- 1:06:26Speaker 10: I think the passion and love of this program from
- 1:06:31Speaker 10: our fans. I mean, we have exceptional fans that are everywhere.
- 1:06:34Speaker 10: They are across the country. Everywhere I go. You know,
- 1:06:38Speaker 10: people recognize me right now, you know, which is like
- 1:06:42Speaker 10: you just don't really understand until you're kind of in
- 1:06:44Speaker 10: these shoes. And you know, I was recognized as often
- 1:06:47Speaker 10: as a Cordinator organ but mostly out on the West coast.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: Now you go nationwide and everybody knows the University of Kentucky.
- 1:06:54Speaker 10: So that to me, hopefully never changes because that shows
- 1:06:58Speaker 10: me that this is a passionate fan base expectin.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: All right, Well, you're getting ready to be done with
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: all this for this year and then you know, I
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: look forward to the season start and I appreciate you
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: coming on from absolutely good to see you. Coach. That's
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: coach will Stein coming on with us for a few
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Just hand out to Larry. He's he's you know, he
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: talks a lot, so he's got to talk to the coach.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: All right, But thank you, coach. Good to see you.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: But listen anytime, I know, I just know that that
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: was not the case at all.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: But you got everything in though I think I got Yeah, fantastic.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: But uh, we didn't get the one question answered though,
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: But that's okay, exactly how can you play? But I
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: love the fact that uh uh Susan Lax who takes
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: care of coach Stun, brings him over here and takes
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: care of us and has him sitting right there. And
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: that was a lot of fun. I thought, I listen,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: I like confidence. I know you are on the realistic side,
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Larry Vott, but I know you don't. I know you did,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and I'm not saying that, but I mean the realistic
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: side comes out. I want my coach to be like that.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: I want my coach to have that kind of confidence
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: because I asked them, what you're going to be your outlook.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: At how would you not like a confident person?
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Well exactly, I Well, you know, my dad every day
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: of his life, greatest day of my life. I've always
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: been around confident people for the most part of my life. Now,
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: when I'm around somebody that's not confident, yeah, they're difficult
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: to be around. I want somebody who's like as much
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: as you look at it. I'm envious of Indiana right
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: now and Kurt Signetti because he kind of has an
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: aura about him and people want to be around that,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: they want that associated with their school. And I'm hoping
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: that guy right that was sitting right there across from
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: us a couple of minutes ago, will Stein is going
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: to be that same type of person.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Well, I think will is very I think John would
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: agree me, very immediate. He can answer questions and take
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: a while to answer him and still not really give
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: away what you need to know. But he answers your questions.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: He's not going to give out anything he doesn't want to,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: but he knows the message he wants to get out there,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: and he does a good job of coming across with that.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: And you're not going to trick him into frustrate him
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: into saying anything like that. He's not going to be
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: rude to the media, but he's going to be guarded
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: in what he lets out. Like surprise players, he's not gonna,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: you know, because he thinks you guess hope they're all
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: going to be a surprise and you're trying to bait
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: him into put him in a corner there. He's just
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: not going to be able to be a guy like that.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: But whereas say a Rich Brooks or a Mark Stoop,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: sometimes we mighte get a little irritated at you if
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: you ask a question like that, where will just kind
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: of let it roll and just give you a general manager.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: He'll us brag on his new one, which is nothing
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: wrong with that.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: No, I couldn't agree more. All right, as if you
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: don't mind, if you would please Michael Bennett, very nice
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: to meet you. Introduce yourself. Who you are? I feel
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: tell yeah, you're gonna lose a mic for a second.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I'm so sorry you. Your name is Kenny minshe uh
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: and you do what here at the University of Kentucky.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: I play football, Yes, you do, and we hope that
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: you're gonna play really great out there too. I'm excited
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: to have you here. I appreciate you coming over for
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: a couple of minutes. Tell us this whole process, how
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: you got introduced to UK and what it's meant to
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: you to be here so far.
- 1:10:32Speaker 11: Yeah, first, you know, started talking to UK obviously in
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: the portal one, that whole thing was going on, started
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: to get really connected to Sloan and Stein, and then
- 1:10:40Speaker 11: you know, made the decision to come here.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: It was a great decision.
- 1:10:44Speaker 11: A lot of good people around the facility, around the campus,
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: just a great atmosphere, really good coaches, really good players,
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: and we're really excited about this upcoming season.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's hard not to be excited, you know,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: as far as you're looking at an old guy right
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: here that's been a fan of UK ball. Yes, I
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: love basketball, but football has always been my sport at
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: University Kentucky, and these guys will admit I'm a die
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: hard of all diehards. Okay, So I'm going to be
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: a little fanboy with you right now, even though I'm
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: a lot older than you. Okay, So, but it's exciting
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: to have Kenny Minchi on here, who will be your
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: quarterback this year, and I'm looking forward to seeing you
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: out there and play. What's it going to mean because
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: you know, you spent what the last two years at
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: three years at Notre Dame and now you're coming to Lexington, Kentucky.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: Explain to me what the environment changes like coming from
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Notre Dame that's you know, traditional football powerhouse to come
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: into Kentucky that has had some success. The fan base
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: when they're really into this team, you haven't seen it yet,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: loves football, I mean, talk about the little bit of
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: a difference there.
- 1:11:53Speaker 11: Yeah, I think there's similarities and differences. Difference would obviously
- 1:11:56Speaker 11: be you know, playing in a conference wasn't something I'm
- 1:11:59Speaker 11: used to.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: You know, something to a player, doesn't it.
- 1:12:04Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean you have a little bit more of
- 1:12:07Speaker 11: you know, goals throughout the season of obviously winning your
- 1:12:10Speaker 11: conference game. So I feel like that's a big difference.
- 1:12:13Speaker 11: But there's definitely similarities. Like you said, my previous school
- 1:12:15Speaker 11: is very traditional, you know, powerhouse and everybody that cares
- 1:12:19Speaker 11: about football, and it's I feel like it's the same
- 1:12:21Speaker 11: thing here being in the SEC. So I feel like
- 1:12:24Speaker 11: there's a lot of similarities.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: And yeah, do you do you have a favorite receiver already?
- 1:12:33Speaker 11: I can't say a favorite yet because we haven't played,
- 1:12:35Speaker 11: but I think we'll see after the first few weeks.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Good. Good. You want to ask something too.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: We hear so much about how accurate you are with
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: your throws. What is probably one of the most difficult
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: throws that coach Stein expects you to make consistently.
- 1:12:54Speaker 11: I wouldn't say it's any specific throw or some sort
- 1:12:57Speaker 11: of route concept, but I would just say playing on
- 1:12:59Speaker 11: time and just playing within the framework of the offense,
- 1:13:02Speaker 11: and just being able to stand in the pocket and
- 1:13:04Speaker 11: make throws when I need to.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: How many times do you feel like that you can
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: switch off? Do you feel comfortable with that? Do you
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: think there's enough trust in you making that play at
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage?
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:13:17Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, whenever you know something shows up, if
- 1:13:20Speaker 11: the defense has given us a look that we don't
- 1:13:21Speaker 11: like in our in our play that we're doing, you know,
- 1:13:23Speaker 11: we have the you know, the free range. The coach
- 1:13:25Speaker 11: gives us the opportunity to make us right at the
- 1:13:27Speaker 11: line of scrimmage. You know, we're not gonna be doing
- 1:13:29Speaker 11: that all the time, but if it does show up
- 1:13:31Speaker 11: and we can, you know, make us put us in
- 1:13:34Speaker 11: a better play, he gives us a full authority to
- 1:13:36Speaker 11: do that.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: So Kenny Canna tell me, as Will turned the offense
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: over to Joe Sloan, there's Will involved every day in that.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: How you think it's gonna be on game day? You
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: think we'll it's gonna be able to let coach Sloan
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: call the play. So how's that gonna work?
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: You think?
- 1:13:52Speaker 11: I think the entire offensive staff definitely has input.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:13:56Speaker 11: I feel like every time I walk by, they're all
- 1:13:58Speaker 11: they're all together talking, scheming, watching practice, watching walkthroughs. So
- 1:14:03Speaker 11: I feel like it's definitely a collective effort between all
- 1:14:05Speaker 11: the position coaches, assistant coaches, and including coach Stein. I
- 1:14:08Speaker 11: feel like he, you know, him, being the head coach,
- 1:14:10Speaker 11: offensive guy, He's definitely gonna have his his touches all
- 1:14:13Speaker 11: over the offense. But you know, I think I don't
- 1:14:17Speaker 11: know who's calling the plays.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 1:14:20Speaker 11: You know what that what that information is. But but everyone,
- 1:14:24Speaker 11: everyone definitely has a, you know, a piece of the
- 1:14:26Speaker 11: pie in terms of what we're doing on offense and
- 1:14:29Speaker 11: how it's gonna look on Saturdays.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: But I mean, you came here because you wanted to
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: play for him. So does he work and coach you daily?
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: I mean when he's trying to walk all around the
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: practice feel how much time do you get to spend
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: with coach Will one on one?
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Uh one on one?
- 1:14:43Speaker 11: A few times here and there, you know, I feel
- 1:14:47Speaker 11: like it's mainly the quarterback coaches that I'm with. Coach Loan,
- 1:14:51Speaker 11: Nate Dotson, Nate Yarnell, Trusty Buchanan, those are the guys
- 1:14:54Speaker 11: I spend most of my time with. But like you said,
- 1:14:56Speaker 11: Will Stein, he's all over the facility. Sometimes he'll come
- 1:14:59Speaker 11: in out by sitting on meeting room, you know, give
- 1:15:02Speaker 11: us some give us some pointers.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: And then on the field.
- 1:15:05Speaker 11: I feel like that's where I get most of my
- 1:15:06Speaker 11: coaching from him, because he's typically, you know, not with
- 1:15:11Speaker 11: the off he's with the offensive defense.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: He's with both sides.
- 1:15:13Speaker 11: But if he, you know, has something to say or
- 1:15:16Speaker 11: have some sort of pointer for what we're doing, a
- 1:15:18Speaker 11: drill or a team rep or whatever it may be,
- 1:15:21Speaker 11: he's definitely right there giving very very good advice.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: And I appreciate that.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: Kenny, All, this is fun and games right right now.
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: It's talking season. You're undefeated right now, But tell me
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: something about this team that fans won't know until the
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: season actually gets started.
- 1:15:40Speaker 11: I feel like being in the SEC, everyone kind of
- 1:15:44Speaker 11: as a tendency to look forward, look past, look at
- 1:15:47Speaker 11: the quote unquote big games on your schedule. But I
- 1:15:50Speaker 11: feel like our team is very very rooted in today
- 1:15:54Speaker 11: and you know, all we care about is today and
- 1:15:56Speaker 11: the only thing that we're focused on is fall camp
- 1:15:58Speaker 11: and then week one. So feel like something that fans
- 1:16:00Speaker 11: don't know is that all we care about is Youngstown State, YO.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Kenny Mention, the starting quarterback for University Kentucky, how does
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: First of all, how does that feel that you're the
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: starting quarterback of a Division one SEC football school? Feels great?
- 1:16:16Speaker 11: You know, obviously a childhood dream to you know, play
- 1:16:19Speaker 11: with the best, play against the best, and you know
- 1:16:23Speaker 11: it's reality.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: So I can't wait. Is all your family coming to
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: see the ball game the first game? Yeah? Yeah, they'll
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: be at every game. They'll be in every game. See.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: I love that. I love that the fact your family's
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: very involved. Your biggest strength in your mind is what
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: my biggest strength? Yes? Oh?
- 1:16:39Speaker 11: And like in terms of playing football, I think you
- 1:16:42Speaker 11: touched on it earlier. I feel like my accuracy is
- 1:16:43Speaker 11: a very big strength of mind. And then just decision making,
- 1:16:48Speaker 11: taking care of the ball. I've played, you know, a
- 1:16:50Speaker 11: lot of football, so I know what it should look like,
- 1:16:53Speaker 11: you know, mys and yeah, just being a smart player,
- 1:16:58Speaker 11: smart quarterback.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Well, I tell you what, it's it's been fun meeting you.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: I wish you nothing but safe and success out there
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: on that football field because we need you for the
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: entire entire season. Okay, especially when we go to the
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: bowl game after this first year? Can you mention great
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: meeting you buddy? All right, best of luck to you
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: this year. All right, Colton Price, come on in here.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: This is a gentleman. It's just may I call you
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: mister Price. Her what a handshake? Feel those steaking hands,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Colton Price, My goodness. I mean, uh, it's fun having
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: you here.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: I appreciate it. How do you like being at UK Man?
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: It's a definitely a different environment. The fan base is amazing,
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: I mean, coaching staff is amazing. The players around here
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: are amazing. I mean, there's nothing you could say that's
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: bad about it. I mean I enjoy it for sure.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: It's kind of feel good to have the jersey. That's
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: one of the things been a dream of my life.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I have that jersey right there exactly. I mean, because
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: the ugliest color in the world is what I probably
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: it's either orange your red. I can't figure out. We
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: can definitely wear that around the facility. Sure, I would
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: agree with that. I mean, what's it been like with
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: the new coaching staff here? Yeah, I mean I.
- 1:18:11Speaker 7: Think I think the coaches have done a really well
- 1:18:13Speaker 7: job of getting all the guys together and be able
- 1:18:15Speaker 7: to build this culture that probably wasn't here prior. It
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: definitely brings like a top of energy that I haven't
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: seen before from a team. You can definitely see the
- 1:18:26Speaker 7: confidence within the players, and I mean that all goes
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: into the preparation that we do every each and every day.
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: But I really do enjoy everything that we've done to
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: get our bodies right, get our minds right, and just
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: hopefully prepare that for the for the field on Saturday.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: You know, Yeah, I see your little tattoo there with
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: the Fiesian six ten. Tell tell me about that. Evidently
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: your faith is very important.
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I would say I love faith and I'm a
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: big believer, but yeah, this says like finally be strong
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: in the Lord and in the strength of his mind.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: So like I'm right here.
- 1:18:59Speaker 7: You can see that. It's almost like a Spartan type
- 1:19:02Speaker 7: gladiator type thing. And so that starts talking about wearing
- 1:19:07Speaker 7: the armor of God each and every day, like each
- 1:19:09Speaker 7: morning you wake up, you know you're gonna face all
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: these different obstacles from the enemy, and you know, I
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: think having this on my arm reminds me of that,
- 1:19:18Speaker 7: and so be able to live in my faith and
- 1:19:21Speaker 7: be really close to God. Then it's gonna get me
- 1:19:24Speaker 7: to where I want to be in the future. So
- 1:19:25Speaker 7: I really believe in that, and I.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Love it cautin. What do you like to do out
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: away from football if you have any spare atastic?
- 1:19:31Speaker 7: Yeah, big big fan of my dogs. Me and my
- 1:19:34Speaker 7: wife just hang out with my dogs.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Really.
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: I love to fish, love to hunt, outdoors type guy.
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: But yeah, I really really like any I really like everything.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: So there's not an abundance of college players that are married, right,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: So we're gonna assume, since it's today's by fifty second anniversary,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna assume that's a big plus. Yeah, So tell
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: me the advantages that you have because you are married
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: over the guys that aren't.
- 1:19:59Speaker 7: Yeah, So I would say, be able to go home
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: to a wife, to hang out with someone whenever you're
- 1:20:04Speaker 7: not by yourself. So I'm obviously living in a house,
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: and so she does a lot for me each and
- 1:20:09Speaker 7: every single day.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: I mean, we were.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Able to hang out outside of here. Be able to
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: take football.
- 1:20:13Speaker 7: Football itself is a really awesome thing, and sometimes you
- 1:20:17Speaker 7: can get a lot of pressure on you, and sometimes
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: you can get too obsessed to where it almost breaks
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: you down. So be able to come home and be
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: able to spend time with your wife or whatever and
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: get away from that a little bit. It it gives
- 1:20:30Speaker 7: me an advantage for sure to be able to focus
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: on that.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Of course, now my wife is not always the most
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: loving at times. She could also kind of get on
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: my butt and tell me not to feel sorry for myself.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: A very good job today. She like that too. Oh yeah,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: she definitely pushes me.
- 1:20:45Speaker 7: She makes sure I'm always doing something and I mean
- 1:20:48Speaker 7: I'm always like that too, always got to be up
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: doing something. But she definitely motivates me throughout the data
- 1:20:53Speaker 7: to figure something out and enjoy it.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: So and the last thing for me. But suddenly you've
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: got a whole new group of offensive line. They came
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: from everywhere, and yet you got some of the like
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: analysts saying might be the best offensive line of Kentucky
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: ever has or has ever had. How can you come
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: together that quickly? You never played with any of these
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: guys before.
- 1:21:12Speaker 7: I mean, like I said, it all starts with like
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: having that preparation and whenever we're doing the walkthroughs or
- 1:21:18Speaker 7: wherever you're in the meetings and we're taking time out
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: of that go and eat dinner and coming over to
- 1:21:22Speaker 7: my house and eating some steaks sometimes and like just
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: taking that little bit of time and be able to
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: put that towards your guys and be able to create
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: that almost like camaraderie with one another. And it all
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: starts in the film room. It all starts in the
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: practice field, but you're able to take time out of that.
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: And but I mean, each of these guys come from
- 1:21:39Speaker 7: different places, including myself, and so we're all new with
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: one another, but were able to find like a bond,
- 1:21:45Speaker 7: Like you know, five is one. There's like also a
- 1:21:47Speaker 7: lens that I also talked about once was there's five
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: guys out there, ten eyes, but you're able to look
- 1:21:54Speaker 7: through all one lens, you know, And so whenever you're
- 1:21:57Speaker 7: you're out there, you're able to rely on another, trust
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: in one another, and that it all goes.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Into the preparation that we do each and every day.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: And so I couldn't be more excited for being able
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: to play next to these guys gold and give us.
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: A little glimpse of what it feels like for the
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: other side of the line and practice. Who has been
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: somebody who's probably been a pain in the butt for you.
- 1:22:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I would say our nose guards are actually I
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: would say a whole entire D line is actually pretty dominant.
- 1:22:26Speaker 7: I wouldn't say anything bad about him. I mean, they're
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: they're a force.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: Larry Bo called him a chicken. They're definitely a force
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: to be record with.
- 1:22:36Speaker 7: And so I wouldn't I wouldn't link down on anyone
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: that we have, but I would.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Say, like, let's say, I probably say Chops. Chops is
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: a big dude.
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: In the in the zero no's, you know, and so
- 1:22:48Speaker 7: it's definitely gonna be hard to run the ball against
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: him and in duo scheme, And so I would say that.
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: And I mean, we definitely got a lot of other
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: guys like JDub he's really uh sad be good as
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: his hands, I mean, gats some amazing guy as well,
- 1:23:04Speaker 7: really good with his hands. But yeah, all over the board,
- 1:23:07Speaker 7: we have really good, really good guys to go against.
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: And so it's gonna make me better at the end
- 1:23:10Speaker 7: of the day.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: Okay, I want to make sure you're okay with that,
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: because we're gonna be asking those guys the same thing about.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Well, the one thing I want to ask because you
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: transferred here from Baylor. Baylor's in a conference called the
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: Big Twelve, you are now playing in the Southeastern Conference.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: How different do you think that's gonna be Yeah.
- 1:23:30Speaker 7: So I would say, like, you're playing against more dominant guys.
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: To be honest, I wouldn't say it's too big of
- 1:23:36Speaker 7: a difference scheme wise over all the board, but uh,
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: I would say, you're playing with bigger guys on the
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: D line, more dominance, and so I would yeah, that's
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: all I'd say. I'd say you're going against better, better
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: guys to give you better looks.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: And so, well, you know, happy wife, happy life. I mean,
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: is your wife prepared because I assume she's from Texas
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: like you are, So are you prepared for the winner
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: up here?
- 1:23:58Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, that's true. I mean Texas over there
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: can get pretty toasty over there. And so my first
- 1:24:04Speaker 7: my first couple of weeks here in Kentucky, it was
- 1:24:07Speaker 7: it was a big old snow storm.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: I've never even seen anything like it.
- 1:24:10Speaker 7: But uh, it was definitely definitely new to me, definitely
- 1:24:13Speaker 7: something to get used to.
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: But I would say it's gonna be great. And you know,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: I asked Kenny Minsche the same thing about his family.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: He said, all his fam' is gonna be here every game.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: How about your family coming up from Texas?
- 1:24:23Speaker 7: Every single game? Every single game is gonna be challenging
- 1:24:26Speaker 7: because they got work and stuff, but they can make time.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: For me, you know. A well, Colton, I appreciate you
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: coming up here. It's such an honor to meet you,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: and I wish you was like minche Please be safe
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: out there, but have a great season. I'm looking forward
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: to it, all right, great, look Collady's hands are huge.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: I mean, my goodness, I should say, mister Price. But
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: thank you for coming on for a few minutes. All right,
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: to everybody, We're gonna take a break right now. We'll
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: we'll have you come back in just a minute. Five
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: oh two, four one, four, fourteen fifty. You want to
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: text in on the Whisky Thief text line and I'll
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: get to those as well. Stay right there. One more
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: segment of Just the Cats with me, John Wong Long
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: and what I went along John Wong, So about that?
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: Long Wong so sorry about that? Uh and Larry Vas
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: and it's like this and like that, like this, and
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: I drank creeping like a fan.
- 1:25:16Speaker 9: I'm creeping, but I got because people could be and
- 1:25:20Speaker 9: that was tough for me to make my.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Fresh Films radio. All right, welcome back to the last segment
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: of Just the Cats. As we just finished up having
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: will Stein, Colton Price and Kenny Minche Larry, I, I
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: mean John, I have to say I, uh, I really
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: enjoyed that. I mean three really good looking guys, very
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: confident people, and uh I thought they did a great job.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: You want me to pinch you to make I know,
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: I know exactly, mister pessimistic over here, Larry bought Michael. Right, Well,
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: only got a few minutes now. They got to start
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: the whole press compensation. They're not coming on, They're not
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: coming on.
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: No, I'm not past fistic at all. I just went
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: over and talked about the best team on campus.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Oh volleyball. Oh yeah, Well see the part I woant
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: to know is how excited they are going up to
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: Wrigley Field and playing the game up there.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Let's get Chris over here.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: See Chris, come on, Chris, come over here, Larry, why
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: don't you introduce Chris.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: This is Chris shows yes volleyball, he knows about winning,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: So go ahead, nice.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: Oh my god, wow, you.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Know the volleyball team was just picked the SEC for
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: hemmy years in a row? Do you know?
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: Is it the seventh year in a row?
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Oh? Michael?
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: Oh sorry, ten the second ago, Chris, it's good to
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: have you on. We were just talking about you a
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: few minutes ago. That's a concerning thing and it should be.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: But I I because I think this is awesome with
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: the volleyball team. Craig Skinner and you were doing. Chris.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: You're the sports information director for the volleyball team, so
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: you're with Craig pretty much, probably on a daily basis. Yep,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: which I'm very jealous of you because I love Craig.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: But what how did the whole volleyball playing at Wriggly
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Field come about? And how excited is this is this team?
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: The play up there.
- 1:27:17Speaker 12: I'll take the second part first, Humped. I think it's
- 1:27:20Speaker 12: gonna be really cool. You're starting to see the TV
- 1:27:22Speaker 12: network slatch onto volleyball a little bit more, which is
- 1:27:25Speaker 12: opening up more opportunities to play in bigger venues with
- 1:27:28Speaker 12: more marquee matchups and better time slots. In terms of
- 1:27:31Speaker 12: how it opened up, it is part of the Big
- 1:27:33Speaker 12: ten sec Challenge, which is an inaugural event, and so
- 1:27:36Speaker 12: basically they've taken two of those matches and moved them
- 1:27:38Speaker 12: to a neutral site. For the most part, this is
- 1:27:42Speaker 12: the Big Tens event in the sense that they are
- 1:27:44Speaker 12: running the logistics of it. They are coordinating with the
- 1:27:47Speaker 12: folks that Wrigley that are running the event through the Cubs,
- 1:27:50Speaker 12: because obviously the Big Ten is very big in the
- 1:27:52Speaker 12: Chicago market, and so the teams that got selected had
- 1:27:56Speaker 12: openings in their schedule and try to make it a
- 1:27:58Speaker 12: marquee event. We were informed of the idea and we're interested,
- 1:28:05Speaker 12: and of course there's there's a lot that goes into
- 1:28:07Speaker 12: an outdoor volleyball match, right There's a lot of things
- 1:28:09Speaker 12: that have to have to make it work, and one
- 1:28:11Speaker 12: of those is uncontrollable with the weather. But we've made
- 1:28:15Speaker 12: significant backup plans in case you're be able to see
- 1:28:18Speaker 12: a volleyball match and too high level. But it's gonna
- 1:28:21Speaker 12: be an unbelievable opportunity and I'm stoked.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: For it and you should be, and I'm sure the
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: team is as well. We need to have coach come
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: on sometime within the next week or two, if that's
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: okay with you, And.
- 1:28:31Speaker 12: Yeah, spen a little time with us Wednesdays our media day.
- 1:28:33Speaker 12: Excited to get some some messages out there, and I
- 1:28:36Speaker 12: think we've got some really cool things that are going
- 1:28:38Speaker 12: to happen on Wednesday that people are going to be
- 1:28:39Speaker 12: excited about. And we've got a really good team and
- 1:28:42Speaker 12: another good group of girls that are going for like
- 1:28:45Speaker 12: Larry said, ten in a row, which is just in
- 1:28:47Speaker 12: this day and age of college athletics is ridiculous.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: Lunch included.
- 1:28:52Speaker 8: Lunch is included. That's speaking my language. Oh yeah, fantastic. Well,
- 1:28:56Speaker 8: it depends on what lunch is. So I mean, if
- 1:28:58Speaker 8: it's a good lunch, and I'll be there. If that's
- 1:29:01Speaker 8: the case, I'll take the lobster. I'll probably won't eat
- 1:29:03Speaker 8: the steak.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: But yes, you just committed to being a volleyball media
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: to day. That's what you just say. I've never been
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: to one, so I want to get this. So let's
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: see now, mister optimism, and let's see are you gonna
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: stick at this? You're gonna win?
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: Is that what you're gonna do?
- 1:29:21Speaker 12: Okay, all right, what time does it happen? We will
- 1:29:26Speaker 12: have lunch at noon. Craig takes the podium at one o'clock.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Larry. If Larry Bot's going to be there,
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: I guess I'll have to be there, so Chris, I'll
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: be there for you. No, we can't wait you got
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: four National Player of the Year finalists you can talk
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: with as well.
- 1:29:39Speaker 12: After that, Oh my goodness, most of anybody in the country.
- 1:29:42Speaker 12: It'll be worth it, is it?
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Really? Congratulations? Tell coach Skinner congratulations on his success, because
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: there's no other volleyball coach out there that I don't
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: love more than him. I mean, he's he's the best
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: at Thanks for being off for a couple of minutes, Chris,
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. All right, so guys, we only got
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: a few minutes left. I mean, let's talk about the season. Uh,
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: we're gonna talk football. We're at the football media day. Larry,
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: come on, I'm going to start with mister pessimistic over here,
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: because I know John is going to finish the show out.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: All right, all right, Larry, what what is going to
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: be your prediction as far as how this team is
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: going to come out first year?
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I think I don't know. I'm really kind of I'm
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: right there with you. I'm hoping they're going to be
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: even better than I think. But I also think they've
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: got certain things they've got to try to overcome. I
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: think what John said, open it up. I think if
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: if you get the six wins, it would be a
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: fantastic season this first year, with the overall changes that
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: you've made, everything that you have to kind of overcome
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: the unknowns that we don't know about. So I'm gonna
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: go with John. I think I would be I would
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: consider five wins a good season starting out this year?
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: Is that what you're predicting? Though?
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: If I had to predict, I would predict five and
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: hope for six or seven.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Really, you're more than me, I hate to tell you.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Oh so now I have.
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: To agree both of you guys.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: I know John, all right.
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: You're at six, John, what are you doing?
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: Well? You know I hate myself because this time of
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: the year, that's when my prediction number always goes up. Yes,
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: two months ago, I was predicting four. Now I'm up
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: to six. I'm saying seven is not out of the wow.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: If they beat Alabama, I think seven beat Alabama.
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: You can beat South Carolina on the road, you can
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: beat Florida at home. Now you're that oh boy at home?
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: You know, those are games that are definitely definitely win
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: a boy, And if you put them on that w line,
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: then you're talking seven and five.
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: I'm going seven and five now.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Okay, so upsets you're upset alert for
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: for which team?
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Uh? Well, you can pick any team you want. I
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: think they're going to be favored.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: In two Yeah, exactly, So okay? Uh but but but really,
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: who do you think would be the biggest upset? Oh boys,
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: I'm worried about Vanderbilt.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: If I had to pick it upset, I would maybe
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: go with the one at South Carolina.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: Because you just said Alabama minute ago too, So I
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: mean that would be here in Lexington.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: I still think there's an awful lot of optimism about
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: beating Alabama. But I think God, remember Alabama was still
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: in the football playoffs last year, weren't absolutely And I
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: hear all they got questions at quarterback. Well, Kentucky's got
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: a new quarterback. They got questions offensive line of Alabama.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: Well Kentucky's got a new offensive line. So and I
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: think Alabama. I've seen Alabama beat Kentucky a few times.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: That makes two of us. John, what do you think?
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: What about you?
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: Though?
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: We can't let you off of he's going too and ten?
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: Well, I hate to tell you I was probably h
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: three in there are optimission I know, I know I was.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: It's but but that's fun giving it to you. So,
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: but I see three wins. I'm hoping four wins. If
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: this team does get the five or six wins, I
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: see that as a big, big win for the program,
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: for the coaching staff coming in here, taking over and
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: just making the excitement all over again. So, John, you're
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: at seven wins, Larry you're at five or six, which
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: just totally shocked me. But because did you see what
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: South Carolina you spoke about about the South Carolina minute ago?
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: Did you see they're selling tickets at Costco? So if
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: you spend eighty dollars, you get two tickets, and twenty
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: dollars goes to concession stand food. I thought, that's that's
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: interesting that South Carolina is selling tickets now. They're probably
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: they said it's certain games. It's probably the games nobody
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: cares about. So I just kind of find surprising they're
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: doing this at Costco. Is it good marketing or is
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: it a little embarrassing?
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: What's next?
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: I s s consterships on jerseys.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's good market You have a full stadium,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: four or five six sand nights.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Yeah, But I don't know. I don't know if it's
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: a good idea to me to go sell tickets at
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: Costco and people buying them there. Maybe that's just me.
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: It just seems it is okay, it just seemed a
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: little embarrassing. Maybe not whatever.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: All right, then all right, besides that team then on
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: the field, you just picked them to win what three games?
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: Don't tell any of them, especially uh Colton Price. I mean,
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: I think he just cracked my head open with his
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: one hand. But I just can this team raise enough
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: money to be a championship team? That's the other big question.
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: Yeah, of course they can. According to Jay Bad, of
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: course they can.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: So I'm asking y'all, what does on one thing? Can
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: they raise enough money?
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: Uh, it's gonna be difficult because Kentucky is a state
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: there's just not money flowing. We're not Texas, we're not Florida,
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: we're not Georgia, and we don't have the corporate sponsors.
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: We don't have that big money that's gonna be flowing
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: in from that standpoint, so I think to compete with
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: the true big boys, it's gonna take a truly unconcerted
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: effort from a grassroots level.
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: Also from big Blue Nation.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: Well, they talk with their wallets I'm not quite sure
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: at this point.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: If you can't sell them at costco, I guess you
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: can't get no. But I think just if you just
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: look at the facts to think that Kentucky can raise
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: the money that some of these other places can, the
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: answer is no. They're just not the financial resources here
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: to do it. I don't think it's the people don't
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: want to. Just there's not a lot of people that
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: can afford to be a heavy contributor. I mean, you
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: could kick in if you wanted to.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: I wasn't asking.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Right now.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: Oh boy, let's let's not go there. But guys, I
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: gotta tell you, this was a fun day. I appreciate
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: y'all taking the time and him coming over here and
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: doing this for me. Appreciate you having absolutely all right
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: everybody our happy place. Yeah exactly, we are in the
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: happy place. Justin. I appreciate you producing the show. Sorry
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: we didn't get to talk to you much, but tomorrow
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: I'll be back in studio with Justin. So stay right there, everybody,
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: have a great day. This was just a cat cheat
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: on your man one.
- 1:36:27Speaker 13: That's how you get in his head. Killer with degree
- 1:36:30Speaker 13: I know, killers in the street with the still to
- 1:36:32Speaker 13: make you feel like chinchilla and they hate. So don't
- 1:36:34Speaker 13: try to run up on my head talking all that rap,
- 1:36:37Speaker 13: trying to ask me one month for your best. Th
- 1:36:40Speaker 13: ain't gonna pass me. You should think about it, take
- 1:36:43Speaker 13: a second. Matter of fact, you should say
