- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:14The conversation you're about to join was inspired by our Spring
- 0:17Mixtape 2025 non series sermon series.
- 0:21Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:24on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:27You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:29fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:32conversation. So this is your last one off
- 0:37sermon for a while. How late in the week did you get
- 0:42the the basis of the foundation for this week's sermon?
- 0:46I think it was late Wednesday afternoon, it might have been
- 0:53Thursday morning. I'm going to vote Thursday
- 0:55morning. And how did that come about?
- 0:58I took some time on Wednesday because I was feeling stressed
- 1:02that I didn't have a sermon kind of in process.
- 1:07Took some time to really just pray about it, think about it,
- 1:10flipped through the Bible a little bit just to see, looked
- 1:14at some things that I had been thinking about again that hadn't
- 1:18really come together earlier in the week and still didn't feel
- 1:23like they were the right thing. And so I went to the lectionary
- 1:28readings for the week, which if people don't know what the
- 1:32lectionary is, it's a three-year cycle that kind of makes sure
- 1:38that churches that use it are kind of hitting all the the
- 1:42major points in Scripture over a three-year period.
- 1:46And some pastors always preach from one of the lectionary
- 1:50passages. There's always a, an Old
- 1:52Testament reading, a gospel reading, a reading from the
- 1:56epistles and a Psalm that are a part of that.
- 1:59And so there's some pastors who just take that as they're
- 2:03preaching text each week. And so when I looked at that,
- 2:07the Acts 11 passage about Peter reporting his experience with
- 2:13Cornelius and the spirit was in there and that kind of got
- 2:17things rolling. I forget somewhere in there the
- 2:22idea of change came up and that's that's how we got there.
- 2:28So so you open up talking about health and trying to shed, you
- 2:33know, 100 lbs. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 2:36And picking as I think the phrase was similar to correct me
- 2:42choosing which hard path. Yeah.
- 2:46Choosing which hard as in like. You can suffer all the
- 2:51consequences of not exercising and dieting and all those kinds
- 2:56of things, or you can choose to eat broccoli and for Whole Foods
- 3:03and and you know, be intentional about taking care of your diet
- 3:06and not having all of the ice cream that your heart desires.
- 3:10Or even half of it. Or even half of it, I said.
- 3:13What's the most ice cream you've eaten in one sitting?
- 3:17I don't know, I'm not like a big sit down all at once.
- 3:20I just I like a little bit, but I like to eat it frequently.
- 3:25Like throughout the day, like you just.
- 3:27I don't know, just. Nightcap.
- 3:30Yeah, there were spices. Yeah, good for you.
- 3:34We're very on different structures.
- 3:36I'm I'm like 99% sure at some point if not multiple points in
- 3:41college I just ate an entire half gallon.
- 3:44Oh gosh. Yeah, but I've, I've grown.
- 3:48Yeah, grown me. Too.
- 3:49That's the. Problem.
- 3:50Yeah, more more outward than up. But what are other areas in
- 3:56which we can? We have two options essentially,
- 4:00we can go kind of the passive, which has hard consequences or
- 4:08we have the hard intentionality that saves us from the poor
- 4:14consequences. What are some areas in which we
- 4:17can, as you discussed with all of the various stories, kind of
- 4:21like team up with Jesus or partner or followers leading in?
- 4:27Yeah. What are some other areas
- 4:28besides physical health? I, I think most of the, the
- 4:32practices of the Christian faith can fall into those either or
- 4:38kind of categories like take Sabbath, for instance.
- 4:42You know, it's I'm a better husband, pastor, father when I
- 4:48am practicing Sabbath, when I do what God has already told me to
- 4:52do and set aside a day to rest, to enjoy him, to do things that
- 5:00fill me with delight with God. And so, but to do that, I have
- 5:07to choose the hard of blocking out that time, right?
- 5:12I have to protect that time. I have to prepare for that time
- 5:16if it's going to be as meaningful as it could be and,
- 5:20and just a lot of scheduling stuff.
- 5:23It falls into that category. I, I could say yes to every
- 5:28opportunity that comes up during a week, but then I'm going to to
- 5:32suffer from the reality of being over busy and not having enough
- 5:38margin in my life for God to really speak to me.
- 5:42I'll just be running from one thing to the next.
- 5:45I'll be exhausted. Yeah, I I like the the one quote
- 5:50someone wise, I'm sure that said, if you're too busy for
- 5:54God, you're busier than God intended you to be.
- 5:58Yeah. And so, you know, sometimes we
- 6:01have all the excuses, especially not just American culture, but
- 6:05Northeastern culture of like busy, it's better.
- 6:09It it is a sign of productivity. It's a sign of.
- 6:14Yeah, it's a badge of honor, right?
- 6:16Yeah. So that's one.
- 6:17I, I think, you know, how we spend our money could easily be
- 6:21another one where, you know, you can choose to, to put away some
- 6:26money, have a little bit of savings so you can have some
- 6:29buffer room in case of an emergency.
- 6:32But that means you have to say no to some of the things you
- 6:35want to do in any given moment or day to make that happen or.
- 6:42The number in the account and then the thing you want is under
- 6:45that number. So why not get the thing that
- 6:47you want? Sure.
- 6:48I mean, that is an option, but then, you know, somebody backs
- 6:53into your car and you have to have it repaired in order to be
- 6:56able to get to work the next day and so.
- 6:59I've got your car one time, Scott.
- 7:02It kind of even connects back to what I was preaching on a couple
- 7:06weeks ago of like we kind of shove God and God time and all
- 7:10that kind of stuff into the church, which makes it easy to
- 7:14like compartmentalize it. It we can put all these other
- 7:18areas of our life away from being affected by our faith or
- 7:24from God and his will for us. What's an area that you struggle
- 7:31like? Maybe the one that you are most
- 7:35resistant, even if you weren't aware of your resistance of like
- 7:38giving up to God in your lifetime.
- 7:41All of them by by nature, I really don't like people telling
- 7:50me what to do. And so I think he could define
- 7:57my spiritual journey as as one of coming to various points of
- 8:05surrender and, you know, giving up whatever might be the issue
- 8:10at that time. That's that's been the journey
- 8:13the whole way. You know, whether it's what I
- 8:16was going to do with my life or if I was going to actually lean
- 8:23into those things that that God has already told.
- 8:27So that's a little bit when I talked a few weeks ago about the
- 8:31year that rest was my word, and that passage from Jeremiah about
- 8:36standing at the crossroads and asking for the ancient paths.
- 8:40And if you walk in them, you'll you'll find rest.
- 8:44That year was kind of another, a deeper invitation to lay aside
- 8:51my preferences and my kind of natural rhythms, that kind of
- 8:58stuff, too, to do the things that I know God has already told
- 9:01me to do so that he could do what he wants to do in me.
- 9:06What about for you? Is there, has there been like
- 9:10one of those things, or has it been more like what?
- 9:14You're probably better than me, though.
- 9:15You probably probably haven't had to wrestle with it so much.
- 9:20That's true, I I'm in 100% agreement with that statement.
- 9:25I'm getting called from the wife back to me being better than
- 9:29you. The more recent one that comes
- 9:32to mind, I guess, like finances. Yeah, I feel like you tithe, you
- 9:40give a little extra, bam, That's all that's being asked of you.
- 9:45If all of me is supposed to be gods and he's provided all of
- 9:50the ways in which I've been able to make money, then why wouldn't
- 9:55all of it? Shouldn't all of it be at his
- 9:57disposal? And so I feel like COVID ish,
- 10:03somewhere in COVID era, there was a time where just like the
- 10:08algorithm was getting me every single night as I was trying to
- 10:13get to sleep, I was like, oh, this is 50 to 90% off.
- 10:18Yeah, it's like you, you, you eventually wise up that they're
- 10:21always 50% to 90%, that you're not saving as much money as you
- 10:25think you're saving. But our so I got in in those
- 10:29kinds of bad habits. And our young adults at one
- 10:33point did a Lent challenge where you couldn't make any purchases
- 10:39besides I think it's grocery and gas.
- 10:42Those are like new purchases. You could, you know, pay for
- 10:47medical things. Obviously you could pay for
- 10:51continuing subscriptions and utilities.
- 10:54And like I. Like your bills?
- 10:55Your bills and all that kind of stuff, but groceries and gas
- 11:00were the only new things you could get.
- 11:02And so that means like before Lent, you prepped for like
- 11:05toiletries and whatever else, cleaning supplies, whatever else
- 11:09you need in the house for that time.
- 11:11And then it's no purchasing. And so you're able to learn not
- 11:17only the self-control, but as temptations and things come up
- 11:22after those days, you realize like, Oh, I didn't really need
- 11:24it. It was more of just like a, a
- 11:27jump the gun purchase. And so it made you a little more
- 11:31thoughtful about what you were buying.
- 11:33I hope it's still kind of a journey like, you know, the all
- 11:36these things are, but trying to get to a place where like each
- 11:40purchase is with God in consideration because he
- 11:46provides our needs and blesses us with more.
- 11:50And so making sure that we're being good stewards with what
- 11:54he's given us. But that one's been been a
- 11:57tougher 1. And that's, that's part of the
- 12:00part of the discipline of fasting, right, is that we're
- 12:03learning to tell our body no, we're learning to tell our
- 12:07desires no. So that way we're not just
- 12:11constantly making decisions based on what we want in any
- 12:15given moment. That's, that's a part of it.
- 12:18And I think what you were talking about there with
- 12:21finances as kind of the shift we see from the, from the Old
- 12:26Testament to the New Testament, Old Testament kind of get that,
- 12:29that focus on here's what the expectation is.
- 12:32Here's the 10%. You know, this is what it means
- 12:34to tithe. But then Jesus comes in and he
- 12:36says, you know, really God owns it all and it's more about your
- 12:40heart than about the actual 10%, right?
- 12:44If he's given it all, then he should get a say in it all.
- 12:48Yeah. And I think with all of these
- 12:50areas, one of the questions that you posed that I think warrants
- 12:55deeper reflection from those that are listening and listened
- 13:00on Sunday is the do you want to be well?
- 13:06Because I think there's a lot at play there that we probably
- 13:09don't even have time in this podcast to get into depending on
- 13:14people's views of themselves, views of God, histories and
- 13:19relationships with different areas of Wellness.
- 13:24I think that question is very profound.
- 13:28And it's one of those things where if you're talking like
- 13:31eating better and physical stuff, like it takes a long time
- 13:35to see the results of that hard work.
- 13:38And I think same thing as we've been doing practicing the way
- 13:41course or we did practicing the way course is that it's doing
- 13:46the practices we see Jesus doing for a long time to see the fruit
- 13:51of how it transforms us and not to have what was the the quote
- 13:57you always did like? It's not.
- 13:58The practices aren't the means to an end.
- 14:02Or no, they're not the end. They're the means to the end.
- 14:05The end is becoming like Jesus. It's learning to love like
- 14:10Jesus. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:12The ultimate goal isn't doing the things, but the the fruit of
- 14:18what they will bring. And I and I also, as you talked
- 14:23about Naman, went in the Jordan River and that was viewed as
- 14:26something below what someone of his position would do.
- 14:31What is something in ministry you've done that maybe others
- 14:38would view as beneath the pastor?
- 14:41And it has been kind of a, a philosophy of ministry kind of
- 14:47thing where I don't ever want to ask someone to do something that
- 14:52I'm not willing to do myself, at least in some form or function.
- 14:56But to, to think about the other day, just a few weeks ago, we
- 15:01had finished up our service. We'd had communion that day.
- 15:04And, you know, there were some bread crumbs in the sanctuary
- 15:08where our servers were standing as they were handing out the
- 15:11pieces of bread. And I, I ran and grabbed the
- 15:16vacuum and was, you know, vacuuming up the bread crumbs.
- 15:21And some people from Lamb of God were coming in as they were
- 15:26getting ready for their service. Hello, Pastor, you shouldn't be
- 15:28doing that. I was like, if Jesus can wash
- 15:31feet, I can vacuum up communion crumbs.
- 15:35So that was just, you know, one of those easy ones.
- 15:39I'm not somebody so special that there's nothing I shouldn't be
- 15:42willing to do. Yeah.
- 15:44And I think that's tough within ministry since you touched on
- 15:48like Jesus washing the feet and come to serve and not be served,
- 15:52the balancing of leading with that mindset.
- 15:57And then also, I think of like early church where they had to
- 16:02find like the seven to help like feed and take care of people.
- 16:07Like, you know, you have a place in position to do certain things
- 16:11and God has provided and equipped other people within the
- 16:14body to do other areas. So it's not that you have to do
- 16:18all of the things, but like you said, be willing to do all of
- 16:23the things with a, with a servant's heart.
- 16:25Yeah. And so for me, the the struggle
- 16:29is, you know, I have to recognize that as pastor in the
- 16:34role that I fill within our congregation, like it's not
- 16:38always the best use of my time to do all those things right.
- 16:44And so I have to have had to learn, and I am still learning
- 16:49to let go of some of that stuff that other people can do for the
- 16:55sake of doing what God has called me to do.
- 16:58And it seems, it seems counterintuitive, but there's a
- 17:05sense of pride that I've had to lay down in letting other people
- 17:12do those things. And not like, it seems like it's
- 17:15a very humble thing, say, oh, no, no, no, I can do these
- 17:18things. I can vacuum up broad crumbs, I
- 17:21can fold bulletins, I can whatever.
- 17:25But at some point there can be an inversion there, and that
- 17:28actually becomes a prideful thing.
- 17:32And so learning to let other people do what they can do, so
- 17:37that I can do what I can do, and we can all fulfill what God is
- 17:42calling us to do. Yeah, and it's good for the for
- 17:46the health of the church, I think for others to be able to
- 17:50know it and not all rely on Scott.
- 17:54Because I remember when you left Trinity to come to Collingswood
- 17:59every single day, literally every single day, like, oh, that
- 18:03was a Scott thing. Can can someone call Scott or
- 18:05text Scott? Like Scott knows that Scott
- 18:07knows that. Oh, Scott knows how to do that.
- 18:09Scott knows the person for this or that.
- 18:11Like you just, you just and it wasn't, wasn't that you used or
- 18:15abused your position. That's what you were supposed to
- 18:17do within that. Part of that was my associate
- 18:20role, right? Absolutely.
- 18:22So that was like your role to do, but the church solely
- 18:26depended on you to do that and didn't have an expectation for
- 18:31anyone else to know or yeah, it it just wasn't set up well for
- 18:37anyone else to know. And it was like things that some
- 18:40of those things weren't even things that should have been in
- 18:42your role. You just took them upon yourself
- 18:44to help within the body. And so getting all the random
- 18:48calls and we missed you. So we just found it.
- 18:52So I was just thinking of like, the statistic of like 20 to 30%,
- 18:57and it might be less than that, of like, church members do all
- 19:03of the work, yeah. Statistics that gets thrown
- 19:06around is 20% of the people do 80% of the work.
- 19:09Yeah, it's like between committees and tech and like
- 19:14you'll see that same kind of hub, hub of people.
- 19:17And so when we get to like nomination time in the year for
- 19:20nominating people for different committees and stuff like that,
- 19:23it usually just ends up becoming the same people because usually
- 19:26they're the willing ones and they're more familiar or
- 19:29whatever it may be. And so to, but we want everyone
- 19:33to have a voice within the body, but also, you know, different
- 19:38people of different giftings and we want to be able to utilize it
- 19:41so that people don't burn out doing a bunch of stuff just so
- 19:46that's the stuff can get done, but be able to work together as
- 19:50a body to accomplish what God is desiring for us.
- 19:54Yeah, no, I mean that you're 100% right.
- 19:57Thank you for joining us for this week's podcast.
- 20:01We need everybody. That's the moral of the story.
- 20:05I I don't know if you said this or if I question says what do
- 20:09you want Jesus to do? Or I said, what do we want Jesus
- 20:13to do for us? And I said more specifically,
- 20:15what do you want Jesus to do for you?
- 20:16Like kind of asking people to consider like, what what change
- 20:21do they see needs to be made in their life that they might not
- 20:27have the power to do? As a Francis Chan fanstan, there
- 20:32was a quote from the book Crazy Love.
- 20:35Overwhelmed by a relentless God, he says.
- 20:38But God doesn't call us to be comfortable.
- 20:41He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid
- 20:47to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if
- 20:52he doesn't come through. And, and for me, it's just a
- 20:57depth of faith and trust that he is faithful and that if he's
- 21:02calling us to things that he will show up and be faithful to
- 21:07us. What did that make you think of?
- 21:08You pulled up something. Yeah, as you started talking, it
- 21:12shifted a little bit as you went on, but just the idea that like
- 21:15in preaching, we're called to comfort the afflicted and
- 21:20afflict the comfortable. God is always working in our
- 21:24lives. And when we settle into a
- 21:28complacency with where we are, then, you know, can he still
- 21:34move? Yes.
- 21:35Does he do things to get our attention?
- 21:37For sure. But so many times he'll let us
- 21:41just kind of sit there and languish in that complacency
- 21:46rather than continue to grow, and sometimes we need to be
- 21:51challenged in that. So what would your challenge for
- 21:56the listeners this week be? I think it's pretty similar to
- 22:01to what I said in the in the sermon and it's, it's the idea
- 22:04that God is working in somewhere in your life.
- 22:09He wants to be, whether we're listening for it, looking for it
- 22:13or not, he is working. There are things he wants to
- 22:17change in US and, and would you take time to let him identify
- 22:24that for you? And then would you be willing to
- 22:28do whatever you need to do to cooperate with that, that grace
- 22:34he's working in your life, right?
- 22:35Because that's really what grace is.
- 22:36We talk about grace a lot as like an unmerited gift of, you
- 22:41know, it's God's favor towards us.
- 22:43But essentially, grace is God's active work in our lives.
- 22:49And so where is he working? Where is he pouring out that
- 22:53grace? And will you do what you need to
- 22:56do so that he can do what only he can do?
- 23:01Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 23:04the conversation is over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 23:07on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 23:10we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
- 23:13can head over to fumccollingswood.org/podcast.
- 23:18Thanks for being part of this conversation.
