- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Jesse and I'm from Run and Yeah, our debut
- 0:03Speaker 1: album's coming out in August.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Jason Jesse. Thanks doing us today, brother.
- 0:09Speaker 3: No, thanks for having us. Chris appreciate it.
- 0:12Speaker 4: As you say, set to release yourself tied to debut
- 0:16Speaker 4: album on the seventh of August.
- 0:17Speaker 2: So how you feel about it?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Feeling really excited. Man, We've been dying for this to
- 0:22Speaker 1: come out. You know, the singles trickle out and every
- 0:26Speaker 1: single has been getting received really well, so we can't
- 0:30Speaker 1: wait for the.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Album to come out. It's really really blown out that
- 0:34Speaker 3: it's gone this quick.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I remember the beginning of the year, you know, Tim
- 0:39Speaker 1: was saying, will trickle the singles out and then the
- 0:42Speaker 1: album will come out in August, and we're here already.
- 0:46Speaker 3: It's it's just, yeah, gone so fast. It's amazing.
- 0:49Speaker 2: The older you get made, the faster it goes to.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 4: So tell us a bit more about the album from
- 0:56Speaker 4: musical point of view and what you're going.
- 0:58Speaker 2: For with it.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Much just started writing, had no real sort of expectations
- 1:06Speaker 1: on an album or or anything to come after that,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and just you know me, I only write when I'm
- 1:16Speaker 1: excited about what I'm writing, you know, I don't write
- 1:19Speaker 1: to sort of sound like anything or to you know,
- 1:24Speaker 1: with anything in mind. Just sort of start writing and
- 1:27Speaker 1: see what happens. And you know, so much material was
- 1:30Speaker 1: coming out thinking fast just sort of went awesome, let's
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know, let's look at an album, and yeah, here
- 1:39Speaker 1: we are.
- 1:41Speaker 4: You released the singles Surrendered Forever and I don't mind.
- 1:45Speaker 4: So they good sounding representation of the album overall, do
- 1:47Speaker 4: you think or are they just scratched the surface?
- 1:50Speaker 3: I think so.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I mean there's a it's a good, you know, set
- 1:54Speaker 1: of black and white. I think on this album it
- 1:58Speaker 1: goes from like there's a there's some softest ballady sort
- 2:02Speaker 1: of stuff all the way out sort of pretty heavy
- 2:07Speaker 1: sort of material, and I think, yeah, I think between
- 2:10Speaker 1: the three it sort of shows what versatility is on
- 2:14Speaker 1: the album and and and plus there's more I think
- 2:18Speaker 1: will surprise people.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So, yeah, you're no stranger of the music industry, but
- 2:23Speaker 4: you've been playing for a lot of years, but your
- 2:25Speaker 4: first album release is a big deal man. So what
- 2:28Speaker 4: sorts of things do you discussed with the band or
- 2:30Speaker 4: do you think about how into that first release?
- 2:33Speaker 3: Try not to think about it too much, really, just
- 2:36Speaker 3: sort of we want to be We're hungry for it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: You know, we're excited that we've come to the point
- 2:44Speaker 1: now where we've got an album coming out, and you know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you can overthink a lot of things, and I think
- 2:51Speaker 1: our mindset's always been we just want to be a
- 2:54Speaker 1: good rock band and a good live band, and the
- 2:59Speaker 1: music that we're writing is sort of showing that, and yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 1: just just hungry for it.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I think.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I've got a little bit cheated by this because I've
- 3:12Speaker 4: spent a lot of time on the Raid with you
- 3:13Speaker 4: and countless hours to the early hours of the morning
- 3:16Speaker 4: chatting all us, having a conversation about you fronting your
- 3:20Speaker 4: own band mate, like how long has that been picking
- 3:22Speaker 4: around for.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Well, same as same as the songwriting sort of process.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It sort of started with that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And you know like at that time I had that
- 3:35Speaker 1: stuff going on with you know, those bands, and and
- 3:39Speaker 1: then when that all sort of that chapter ended, then
- 3:44Speaker 1: I was looking at sort of what to do.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Next, and and yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 1: That started with all the you know, so I've always
- 3:50Speaker 1: written songs, but sort.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Of looking at the heavier side of.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Writing and yeah, and it's sort of just snowball from
- 3:59Speaker 1: there pretty organically.
- 4:01Speaker 3: For lack of a.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Better for those who don't know, like you've were the
- 4:07Speaker 4: guitarists who played Angus in Naked Aka for a lot
- 4:09Speaker 4: of years, which is where we've.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Spent basically our time together.
- 4:12Speaker 4: So even if I had a thought that you were
- 4:14Speaker 4: going to go into original band, I thought it would
- 4:16Speaker 4: have been a bit more that side of things, Like
- 4:19Speaker 4: was it a deliberate shift.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Away from what you've been doing hav enough with this?
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I've always wanted to write the heavier
- 4:29Speaker 1: sort of stuff and so sort of like had that
- 4:33Speaker 1: in mind going into this. I didn't want to sort
- 4:35Speaker 1: of go from something I've been doing for you know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: twelve thirteen years into something similar. I wanted to just
- 4:42Speaker 1: completely go on a different direction. And yeah, that's sort
- 4:45Speaker 1: of the beginning thinking of it, and then it.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it went from there.
- 4:50Speaker 4: And even with the singing mate, like I think all
- 4:52Speaker 4: I've ever heard of you sing is a couple of
- 4:54Speaker 4: we always the microphone before, Like I never actually knew
- 4:57Speaker 4: that you had that singing side in You're Like when
- 4:59Speaker 4: you formed the band, did you always and tend on
- 5:02Speaker 4: being the vocalist or did you more fall into that?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah? I did, Yeah, and it sort of for more
- 5:09Speaker 1: of a I suppose controlling side of me more than anything,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know, like the songwriting aspect of you know, writing
- 5:17Speaker 1: the riffs and then writing the lyric melodies on top
- 5:21Speaker 1: of it.
- 5:21Speaker 3: So is how the songs.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Usually start with me just either a guitar riff or
- 5:27Speaker 1: a vocal line, and then it sort of goes from there.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And yes, I just sort of like thought, well, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: I'll do it.
- 5:36Speaker 4: I'm sure there's a lot of people out there like
- 5:38Speaker 4: me that know stuff all about music made. So then
- 5:41Speaker 4: you play guitar is one thing, but seeing you play
- 5:43Speaker 4: and sing at the same time, Like, is it much
- 5:45Speaker 4: of a difference? Do you have to focus on different
- 5:47Speaker 4: things to be able.
- 5:47Speaker 2: To do both.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a challenge because like the stuff started
- 5:53Speaker 1: off written for recording this album anyway, and so I
- 6:00Speaker 1: didn't really think of it too much recording it, because
- 6:03Speaker 1: you're recording guitars and then you record vocal and then
- 6:06Speaker 1: when you have to think about learning and both at
- 6:09Speaker 1: the same time, you go on, there's a lot of
- 6:11Speaker 1: stuff I was going on. No, I've really shot myself
- 6:14Speaker 1: in the foot here, but yeah, so I took a
- 6:16Speaker 1: lot of figuring out, but it you know, you stick
- 6:20Speaker 1: to it and it just sort of come come together.
- 6:25Speaker 3: But yeah, it was. It was a challenge certainly something different.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I know when you first started playing guitar, you locked
- 6:32Speaker 4: yourself in the bedroom with a few CDs and taught
- 6:34Speaker 4: yourself to play in pretty much three or four days.
- 6:36Speaker 4: So what do you do?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Did you lock yourself in the bathroom and just keep sinking.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I was lucky enough that I've got the studio studio
- 6:44Speaker 1: at home, so I built a vocal booth and just
- 6:47Speaker 1: went in there and just practice, you know, my favorite
- 6:51Speaker 1: bands and my stuff. And just after doing it for
- 6:55Speaker 1: long enough, you sort of get familiar with it and
- 6:58Speaker 1: it feels like you've been doing a lot longer than
- 7:01Speaker 1: you have. So yeah, that's the same sort of thing.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Just stubborn, just too stubborn to say.
- 7:05Speaker 3: You know, to go, I can't do it.
- 7:08Speaker 4: So yeah, your biggest supporters all the way through, Like
- 7:17Speaker 4: he of course used to sing and play bass for Snake,
- 7:20Speaker 4: So when you went into this original thing of your own,
- 7:22Speaker 4: like how supportive was he and what sort of advice
- 7:25Speaker 4: did he have for you?
- 7:26Speaker 1: He's our biggest fan and and biggest critic, which is
- 7:31Speaker 1: which is you know great? You need you need both
- 7:34Speaker 1: ends of the spectrum, you know, someone that says the
- 7:36Speaker 1: stuff is great, or you know, maybe that's.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Not so good or whatever.
- 7:41Speaker 1: But yeah, he he was a driving force in in
- 7:45Speaker 1: getting me to do this and to say I could
- 7:47Speaker 1: do it, you know, whenever, especially with the vocals, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: him being as great of a vocalist, and and he
- 7:55Speaker 1: even taught me some ways that I can use my voice.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And and funnily enough, sometimes hearing myself singing him hearing
- 8:02Speaker 1: it too, he he goes, wow, that sounds so much
- 8:05Speaker 1: like me, like we have such a similar sounding voice.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Sometimes it's it's which is such a compliment. And and
- 8:13Speaker 1: in saying that that he was in Snake in Sydney.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The lead guitarist from Snake his son is our drama.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So it's sort of like, yeah, so it's sort of
- 8:26Speaker 1: like a really cool continuation.
- 8:30Speaker 4: You know, tell me how hard was it to stop
- 8:33Speaker 4: him jumping in the studio and hijacking one song and
- 8:35Speaker 4: singing on it on the actually.
- 8:39Speaker 3: One of the songs he wrote the words for.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So that was that was a cool little thing to
- 8:47Speaker 1: to put on there, you know.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But you know, no, he sort of he gave me
- 8:55Speaker 3: a lot of cues like if there was, I would show.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Him all the demos, and he was say, you know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: maybe try it put going down this route, you know
- 9:05Speaker 1: with with vocal lines or you know, oh you're you're
- 9:09Speaker 1: in the right direction on this one.
- 9:11Speaker 3: So yeah, no, I didn't want to jump in on it,
- 9:14Speaker 3: but he.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Did help out a lot with you know, phrasing and
- 9:17Speaker 1: lyric lines and stuff like that.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I not the's nothing to sound to like slip on
- 9:21Speaker 4: in there. So your dad's fingerprints are all over it.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Surrender's pretty heavy.
- 9:30Speaker 4: You've toured all over the world and you've played with
- 9:32Speaker 4: musicians all over the world made so you've been sport
- 9:35Speaker 4: in a lot of ways, like with what you've done,
- 9:36Speaker 4: But when it came to putting together run, like what
- 9:39Speaker 4: were you looking for specifically other members?
- 9:42Speaker 3: Just just excitement, you know.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I wanted people that love the stuff, which is the
- 9:47Speaker 1: biggest battle to find some you know, people that are
- 9:50Speaker 1: like minded in the direction that you want to go in.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And and I was lucky enough that we didn't. As
- 9:57Speaker 1: I said, with U the guitarist son that was in Sake,
- 10:03Speaker 1: that was a match made in heaven straight away.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And then we just sort of, yeah, found people around.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Us that they wanted to be involved because they just
- 10:14Speaker 1: you know, were wrapped in the music, and also they're
- 10:18Speaker 1: all great musicians. But yeah, I think that's the biggest
- 10:21Speaker 1: thing is finding people that love it, because if they don't,
- 10:24Speaker 1: then their heart's.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Not going to be in it. And yeah, we were
- 10:27Speaker 3: lucky enough to do that.
- 10:30Speaker 2: We'd touched on this a little bit before made.
- 10:31Speaker 4: But your music's heavily leans towards the grunge and alternative
- 10:35Speaker 4: style of things. Like when you sat down to write
- 10:38Speaker 4: and plan out the sound, I guess, like, is that
- 10:40Speaker 4: what you had in mind from the start or is that.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Just more where the songwrit and jouck.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Out sort of a bit of both, like I want
- 10:48Speaker 1: Like I said, I wanted to be in the sort
- 10:50Speaker 1: of heavier.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Side of things because I've always had.
- 10:54Speaker 1: A passion for that sort of stuff. But we didn't
- 10:59Speaker 1: really go out saying we want to sound like you know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: Soundgarden or you know anything like that, or you know,
- 11:07Speaker 1: any other band. It's just sort of, yeah, it was
- 11:10Speaker 1: sort of like how the songs came out. It is
- 11:12Speaker 1: obviously influenced by a lot of the you know, nineties,
- 11:16Speaker 1: earlier two thousand sort of style, but there's also a
- 11:20Speaker 1: lot of other influencers from you know, sixties and seventies
- 11:25Speaker 1: style of music, you know, from I know, your favorite
- 11:30Speaker 1: the Beatles.
- 11:30Speaker 3: You know, it was a yeah so yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 1: No, Like I think if you if you're going out
- 11:40Speaker 1: there trying to go, we're going to write this and
- 11:43Speaker 1: we want to sound like this, it's it's never going
- 11:47Speaker 1: to really work for me anyway, because you just can't
- 11:51Speaker 1: get excited about going, I want to go in this direction.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But you can sort of go, I want to sound
- 11:56Speaker 1: a little like heavier or whatever, and then just run
- 11:59Speaker 1: with it.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And that's sort of what we did on the thing.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I've always sort of wondered with music bro like and
- 12:04Speaker 4: you mentioned before, like the sound Guard influences, like genres
- 12:07Speaker 4: like this be known for band like the sound Guard,
- 12:09Speaker 4: you know, like they've got a label and stuff. But
- 12:11Speaker 4: when you're a writing your own stuff and putting your
- 12:13Speaker 4: own spin on it, Like, how hard is it to
- 12:16Speaker 4: sort of tread that.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Line between imitation and inspiration? Where do you draw on
- 12:20Speaker 2: the line.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Well, I think it's just like, yeah, like I was saying,
- 12:25Speaker 1: it's just like you don't try.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And sound like anyone, you know.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm like, we're not going out going we need to
- 12:32Speaker 1: write a song that sounds like this band or whatever.
- 12:35Speaker 1: It's just it's just sort of written all like the
- 12:39Speaker 1: inspiration from bands. And we're all music fans, so you know,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you know, the other band members of favorite bands are
- 12:50Speaker 1: all different to mine, and that's it's just just written
- 12:54Speaker 1: the blueprint of it.
- 12:55Speaker 3: It's just sort of what happens when we come together.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean I don't think yeah, I certainly
- 13:02Speaker 1: didn't go out saying we want to sound like anyone
- 13:04Speaker 1: or not.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I don't think we do. I think we sort of
- 13:07Speaker 3: put our own mark on.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a running thing here. There's not a lot
- 13:15Speaker 1: of thinking going on.
- 13:18Speaker 4: I said that there's a quote in the press release
- 13:22Speaker 4: that I know something we've spoken about before, but I
- 13:25Speaker 4: wanted to elaborate on the bit formulated like the quote
- 13:27Speaker 4: says brunches delivered with a modern edge and a clear
- 13:30Speaker 4: emphasis on strong songwriting rather than video trickery.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Like it spanned on that and why it's important.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a lot of bands, not not you know,
- 13:44Speaker 1: there's yeah, not every band, but a lot of bands
- 13:47Speaker 1: will write a phenomenal album and then not be able
- 13:50Speaker 1: to perform it live, and I think our biggest thing
- 13:55Speaker 1: was we want to be as good a live band,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and Sam is as good as as good live as
- 14:01Speaker 1: the album sounds. And that's sort of like, yeah, our adage,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you know, if you can't do it right, don't do it.
- 14:07Speaker 4: That's pretty much come through the upbringing you've had too,
- 14:09Speaker 4: wouldn't it like stages and people have had hot dinners?
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, that's that's yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 3: that's it.
- 14:18Speaker 1: You know, it's just you know, we didn't want to
- 14:21Speaker 1: be an album band.
- 14:22Speaker 3: We want to be a live band.
- 14:24Speaker 1: That's big, life sounds, big guitars and big vocals speaking alive.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Then, brother, I'm sure you've got some shows coming up
- 14:30Speaker 4: and promote the album.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, we got a couple in one coming up
- 14:36Speaker 1: in September, so boxing, another one at the same place
- 14:39Speaker 1: in November, supporting enough Enough you have.
- 14:44Speaker 2: A ball with that, Yeah, big bloke band, you gonna
- 14:47Speaker 2: have a ball.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Yeah awesome. Yeah, they're looking forward to it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But as all right, Jesse was as for your time.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But either self titled debut album is out August the seventh,
- 14:56Speaker 4: and it is a fine slab of rock.
- 14:57Speaker 2: My friends, so best of black with it.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Also, thank you very much for having me. Chris
