- 0:37Right, brother. All right, we'll get geared up
- 0:39here for whoever our next guest is.
- 0:41You don't know. We didn't set this in a
- 0:42schedule, so I don't know who's going to be next, actually.
- 0:45Now I do know who's going to be next.
- 0:47So introduce yourself and let's get started.
- 0:49Tonight, I'm Tim Byers. I'm the new KU Relays Director.
- 0:53And I'm just here to, you know, let people know that KU Relays
- 0:56is back. And it needs to be back, yes.
- 1:14You know 1923 is when the relay started.
- 0:59What a what a tradition filled meat, the KU relays, is it?
- 1:04It unfortunately gets a little triumphed over a couple of
- 1:07others, right? I don't know that anybody has
- 1:09the history that KU has for the entire sport of track and field.
- 1:16We have our hundred year anniversary this year and we're
- 1:19looking at Jim Ryan, Billy Mills coming back, Sharon Milkedy.
- 1:24You know, a lot of local people coming back.
- 1:25It's just a lot of history that's there at Kansas and you
- 1:29know the track and field and cross country programs only.
- 1:32There's only one other program from the national championship
- 1:34in basketball. I think probably heard of them
- 1:37a. Pretty good team.
- 1:38And then cross country and that track and field at University of
- 1:41Kansas. Well, Stanley, you know I love
- 1:43Stanley to death and does a great job and the staff that's
- 1:46been there for the coaching staff for the longest time has
- 1:48always been really first class and just talk.
- 1:50Tell us a little bit about yourself Tim.
- 1:52How did you get to the? You know, I'm a born and bred
- 1:54Lawrence kid. I was born in Lawrence Memorial
- 1:57Hospital, so I've been going to Kansas Relay since I was
- 2:00probably about 6-7 years old. I coached for 28 years and then
- 2:05this position opened up. It's been vacant for a few years
- 2:08and you know they have the opportunity to bring the Kansas
- 2:12Relays back. To a Lawrence kid is very, very
- 2:15emotional for me and stuff, so I want to bring it back full
- 2:19force. I want people to know that, you
- 2:21know, this is something that's going to be around for another
- 2:23100. Years also.
- 2:24So tell us, you know, we're tonight, we're going to have a
- 2:26lot of track coaches up be the bulk of it of course.
- 2:29But what does a director of relays at KU do?
- 2:32What is, and I know the list is long, right?
- 2:35What are your top 345 priorities that you have to accomplish for
- 2:38the? KV You know this one is just
- 2:40getting the trust back. For, you know, the track and
- 2:43field community to tell them, hey, this is, it's back.
- 2:46You know, there's rumors going around.
- 2:47We're only going to be there for one year, then we're going to
- 2:49stop. That's not true at all.
- 2:51I wouldn't take a job just for one year.
- 2:54Yeah. I don't get real self.
- 2:55Type of. Money, yeah.
- 2:58You. Know so you know you know our
- 3:01big, big focus right now is to get the high schools to come
- 3:04back to Kansas high Kansas, Missouri and Texas and Oklahoma
- 3:07areas and then and providing a great competition for our
- 3:11collegiate athletes. So going back and forth between
- 3:14those two is, you know that student experience is the number
- 3:18one thing I want them to come. I want them to say that was a
- 3:22great relay meet and we want to come back next year or they want
- 3:25to put it on their calendar for the coaches for the next three
- 3:28years. Awesome.
- 3:29So what are the dates this? Year April 13th through.
- 3:31The 15th April 13th through the 15th is the 100th.
- 3:34I mean, if you're going to ever try out the KU relays,
- 3:37absolutely shouldn't this be the?
- 3:38I think this should be the year. It's when we're recording this
- 3:41it's the middle of December. Oh, absolutely.
- 3:42Is there still time to get entries into the?
- 3:44Entries. We're doing a top like entry
- 3:48list. So the top 45 or we're not going
- 3:50to put a minimum mark on anything because we found out a
- 3:53lot of times people end up not entering because oh, I'm not
- 3:56hitting that, but we're just going to do a top enter and we
- 3:58accept all four by ones and four by fours for high schools.
- 4:02So there even, you know. They can come and have a great
- 4:05experience, you see to wrap right around 8000 out there and
- 4:09we can do more. With them and what a facility,
- 4:11by the way. Yeah, I mean, good gosh, come on
- 4:13man, that is amazing. It's.
- 4:15An amazing. Facility, well, Tim, to wrap it
- 4:16up, I actually kind of did something fun here Okay.
- 4:19So I have 100 questions here, one through 100, Okay.
- 4:24They're random. All right, I'm talking about
- 4:25random. Okay.
- 4:26You get to guess. You get to pick the number one
- 4:28through 100. OK12 all.
- 4:29Right. So we're gonna go 12.
- 4:30I got you to pick the 100 from the KD relay.
- 4:33I'm gonna ask the 101, just OK. The hundred's fine.
- 4:35I'll do 12. I'm gonna do 100 is my bonus.
- 4:37Alright #12, So did the apple fall far from the tree?
- 4:41Let's hear it, Tim. Are you team Apple or are you
- 4:43team Android man? Oh, I actually have both in my
- 4:46pocket right now. KU is the iPod phones and I had
- 4:52a Android before I came here and so.
- 4:55I was not expecting that answer at all.
- 4:57I'm Team iPhone, I only have one phone.
- 5:00I don't know what Tim's doing here.
- 5:01And because it's the 100th anniversary of the KU Relays,
- 5:04here's question #101 hundred Y2K was a bust, but are you setting
- 5:09any New Year's resolutions this year?
- 5:11So what is it? And New Year's resolutions.
- 5:12I'm getting a new hip in February.
- 5:15So I'm excited to, you know, it's just kind of gotten to that
- 5:18point where I haven't been able to do my exercise and do things
- 5:22like that. I used to do Iron Man, so thanks
- 5:23and stuff. So now this is kind of.
- 5:26So I'm ready to get that new hip and start my my Rd. back well.
- 5:30I'm from Alabama and I can't even spell Iron Man, so I'm
- 5:32certainly not going to do that. I mean, we really honestly just
- 5:36pray for your your hip man. My father.
- 5:38My father-in-law just had both of his done in complete recovery
- 5:42by the. Way he's. 100% He's a basketball
- 5:44guy, so yeah, he's all winning, man.
- 5:47So I just hope that everything goes well and that 2023 is going
- 5:50to be an amazing year for you personally.
- 5:51Thank you, my professional. It's going to selfie.
- 5:55All right, brother. Hey, thanks for being on the
