  Tonight, I'm Tim Byers. I'm the new KU Relays Director.

  And I'm just here to, you know, let people know that KU Relays
• 0:56
  is back. And it needs to be back, yes.

  You know 1923 is when the relay started.

  What a what a tradition filled meat, the KU relays, is it?
• 1:04
  It unfortunately gets a little triumphed over a couple of
• 1:07
  others, right? I don't know that anybody has
• 1:09
  the history that KU has for the entire sport of track and field.

  We have our hundred year anniversary this year and we're
• 1:19
  looking at Jim Ryan, Billy Mills coming back, Sharon Milkedy.

  You know, a lot of local people coming back.
• 1:25
  It's just a lot of history that's there at Kansas and you
• 1:29
  know the track and field and cross country programs only.
• 1:32
  There's only one other program from the national championship
• 1:34
  in basketball. I think probably heard of them
• 1:37
  a. Pretty good team.
• 1:38
  And then cross country and that track and field at University of
• 1:41
  Kansas. Well, Stanley, you know I love
• 1:43
  Stanley to death and does a great job and the staff that's
• 1:46
  been there for the coaching staff for the longest time has
• 1:48
  always been really first class and just talk.

  Tell us a little bit about yourself Tim.
• 1:52
  How did you get to the? You know, I'm a born and bred
• 1:54
  Lawrence kid. I was born in Lawrence Memorial
• 1:57
  Hospital, so I've been going to Kansas Relay since I was
• 2:00
  probably about 6-7 years old. I coached for 28 years and then
• 2:05
  this position opened up. It's been vacant for a few years
• 2:08
  and you know they have the opportunity to bring the Kansas
• 2:12
  Relays back. To a Lawrence kid is very, very
• 2:15
  emotional for me and stuff, so I want to bring it back full
• 2:19
  force. I want people to know that, you
• 2:21
  know, this is something that's going to be around for another
• 2:23
  100. Years also.
• 2:24
  So tell us, you know, we're tonight, we're going to have a
• 2:26
  lot of track coaches up be the bulk of it of course.

  But what does a director of relays at KU do?
• 2:32
  What is, and I know the list is long, right?
• 2:35
  What are your top 345 priorities that you have to accomplish for
• 2:38
  the? KV You know this one is just
• 2:40
  getting the trust back. For, you know, the track and
• 2:43
  field community to tell them, hey, this is, it's back.
• 2:46
  You know, there's rumors going around.
• 2:47
  We're only going to be there for one year, then we're going to
• 2:49
  stop. That's not true at all.
• 2:51
  I wouldn't take a job just for one year.
• 2:54
  Yeah. I don't get real self.
• 2:55
  Type of. Money, yeah.

  You. Know so you know you know our
• 3:01
  big, big focus right now is to get the high schools to come
• 3:04
  back to Kansas high Kansas, Missouri and Texas and Oklahoma
• 3:07
  areas and then and providing a great competition for our
• 3:11
  collegiate athletes. So going back and forth between
• 3:14
  those two is, you know that student experience is the number
• 3:18
  one thing I want them to come. I want them to say that was a
• 3:22
  great relay meet and we want to come back next year or they want
• 3:25
  to put it on their calendar for the coaches for the next three
• 3:28
  years. Awesome.
• 3:29
  So what are the dates this? Year April 13th through.
• 3:31
  The 15th April 13th through the 15th is the 100th.
• 3:34
  I mean, if you're going to ever try out the KU relays,
• 3:37
  absolutely shouldn't this be the?
• 3:38
  I think this should be the year. It's when we're recording this
• 3:41
  it's the middle of December. Oh, absolutely.
• 3:42
  Is there still time to get entries into the?
• 3:44
  Entries. We're doing a top like entry
• 3:48
  list. So the top 45 or we're not going
• 3:50
  to put a minimum mark on anything because we found out a
• 3:53
  lot of times people end up not entering because oh, I'm not
• 3:56
  hitting that, but we're just going to do a top enter and we
• 3:58
  accept all four by ones and four by fours for high schools.

  So there even, you know. They can come and have a great
• 4:05
  experience, you see to wrap right around 8000 out there and
• 4:09
  we can do more. With them and what a facility,
• 4:11
  by the way. Yeah, I mean, good gosh, come on
• 4:13
  man, that is amazing. It's.

  An amazing. Facility, well, Tim, to wrap it
• 4:16
  up, I actually kind of did something fun here Okay.

  So I have 100 questions here, one through 100, Okay.

  They're random. All right, I'm talking about

  You get to guess. You get to pick the number one

  pocket right now. KU is the iPod phones and I had

  a Android before I came here and so.

  I was not expecting that answer at all.

  And because it's the 100th anniversary of the KU Relays,

  here's question #101 hundred Y2K was a bust, but are you setting

  any New Year's resolutions this year?

  So what is it? And New Year's resolutions.

  I'm getting a new hip in February.
• 5:15
  So I'm excited to, you know, it's just kind of gotten to that
• 5:18
  point where I haven't been able to do my exercise and do things
• 5:22
  like that. I used to do Iron Man, so thanks
• 5:23
  and stuff. So now this is kind of.
• 5:26
  So I'm ready to get that new hip and start my my Rd. back well.
• 5:30
  I'm from Alabama and I can't even spell Iron Man, so I'm
• 5:32
  certainly not going to do that. I mean, we really honestly just
• 5:36
  pray for your your hip man. My father.

  My father-in-law just had both of his done in complete recovery
• 5:42
  by the. Way he's. 100% He's a basketball
• 5:44
  guy, so yeah, he's all winning, man.

  So I just hope that everything goes well and that 2023 is going

  to be an amazing year for you personally.
