Speaker 1: The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, Act one, Scene one,
• 0:09
Speaker 1: Venice a street, enter Antonio, Salonino, and Salonio in sooth.
• 0:18
Speaker 2: I know not why I am so sad. It wearies me.
• 0:23
Speaker 2: You say it wearies you? But how I caught it,
• 0:26
Speaker 2: found it, or came by it? What stuff tis made of?
• 0:30
Speaker 2: Whereof it is born? I am to learn, and such
• 0:35
Speaker 2: a want wit sadness makes of me that I have
• 0:37
Speaker 2: much ado to know myself.
• 0:39
Speaker 3: Your mind is tossing on the ocean. There were your
• 0:42
Speaker 3: argacies with portly sail like signors and rich burghers on
• 0:46
Speaker 3: the flood, or, as it were, the pageants of the sea.
• 0:49
Speaker 3: Do overpeer the petty traffickers that curtsey to them, do
• 0:52
Speaker 3: them reverence as they fly by them with their woven wings.
• 0:56
Speaker 4: Believe me, sir, had I such venture forth, the better
• 0:58
Speaker 4: part of my affections would be with my hopes abroad.
• 1:01
Speaker 4: I should be still plucking the grass to nowhere sits
• 1:04
Speaker 4: the wind, peering in maps for ports and piers and roads,
• 1:07
Speaker 4: in every object that might make me fear misfortune to
• 1:10
Speaker 4: my ventures out of doubt would make me sad.
• 1:13
Speaker 3: My wind cooling my broth would blow me to an
• 1:15
Speaker 3: egg when I thought what harm a wind too great
• 1:18
Speaker 3: might do at sea? I should not see the sandy
• 1:21
Speaker 3: hour glass run, but I should think of shallows and
• 1:23
Speaker 3: of flats, and see my wealthy andrew docked in sand,
• 1:27
Speaker 3: veiling her high top lower than her ribs, to kiss
• 1:29
Speaker 3: her burial. Should I go to church and see the
• 1:32
Speaker 3: holy edifice of stone, and not bethink me straight of
• 1:35
Speaker 3: dangerous rocks, which, touching but my gentle vessel's side, would
• 1:39
Speaker 3: scatter all her spices on the stream, and rode the
• 1:42
Speaker 3: roaring waters with my silks. And in a word, but
• 1:45
Speaker 3: even now worth this, and now worth nothing? Shall I
• 1:49
Speaker 3: have the thought to think on this? And shall I
• 1:52
Speaker 3: lack the thought that such a thing bechanced would make
• 1:54
Speaker 3: me sad? But tell not me. I know Antonio is
• 1:58
Speaker 3: sad to think upon his merchandise.
• 2:00
Speaker 2: Believe me, no, I thank my fortune for it. My
• 2:03
Speaker 2: ventures are not in one bottom, trusted, nor to one place,
• 2:08
Speaker 2: nor is my whole estate upon the fortune of this
• 2:10
Speaker 2: present year. Therefore my merchandise makes me not sad.
• 2:14
Speaker 3: Why then, you are in love fi fi not in
• 2:18
Speaker 3: love neither? Then let us say you are sad because
• 2:22
Speaker 3: you are not merry, and were as easy for you
• 2:24
Speaker 3: to laugh and leap and say you are merry because
• 2:27
Speaker 3: you are not sad now by two headed Janus. Nature
• 2:30
Speaker 3: hath framed strange fellows in her time, some that will
• 2:34
Speaker 3: evermore peep through their eyes and laugh like parrots at
• 2:37
Speaker 3: a bagpiper, and others of such vinegar aspect that they'll
• 2:41
Speaker 3: not show their teeth in way of smile, though nestor
• 2:44
Speaker 3: swear the jest be laughable.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: Enter Bassanio, Lorenzo and Gratiano.
• 2:50
Speaker 4: Here comes Bassanio, your most noble kinsman. Gritiano and Lorenzo
• 2:54
Speaker 4: fare you well. We leave you now with better company.
• 2:57
Speaker 3: I would have stayed till I had made you merry,
• 2:59
Speaker 3: if worthier friends have not prevented me.
• 3:02
Speaker 2: Your worth is very dear in my regard. I take
• 3:05
Speaker 2: it your own business calls on you, and you embrace
• 3:08
Speaker 2: the occasion to depart.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: Good morrow, My good lord, good signors.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: Both when do we laugh, say when you grow exceeding strange?
• 3:17
  Speaker 5: Must it be?
• 3:18
Speaker 3: So we'll make our leisures to attend on yours.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: Excient Salarino and Salonnio.
• 3:25
Speaker 6: My lord Bassanio, since you have found Antonio, we too
• 3:29
Speaker 6: will leave you. But at dinner time I pray you
• 3:32
Speaker 6: have in mind where we must meet.
• 3:35
Speaker 5: I will not fail you.
• 3:37
Speaker 7: You look not well, signor Antonio. You have too much
• 3:41
Speaker 7: respect upon the world. They lose it that do buy
• 3:44
Speaker 7: it with much care. Believe me you are marvelously changed.
• 3:49
Speaker 2: I hold the world, but as the world gratiano a
• 3:53
Speaker 2: stage where every man must play a part, and mine
• 3:57
  Speaker 2: a sad one.
• 3:58
Speaker 7: Let me play the fool with mirth and laughter. Let
• 4:02
Speaker 7: old wrinkles come, and let my liver rather heat with
• 4:05
Speaker 7: wine than my heart cool with mortifying groans. Why should
• 4:09
Speaker 7: a man whose blood is warm within sit like his
• 4:12
Speaker 7: grandsire cut in alabaster sleep when he wakes, and creep
• 4:17
Speaker 7: into the jaundice by being peevish. I tell thee what, Antonio,
• 4:21
Speaker 7: I love thee, and tis my love that speaks. There
• 4:25
Speaker 7: are a sort of men whose visages do cream and
• 4:29
Speaker 7: mantle like a standing pond, and do a wilful stillness,
• 4:33
Speaker 7: entertain with purpose to be dressed in an opinion of wisdom,
• 4:37
Speaker 7: gravity profound conceit as who should say, I am sir oracle,
• 4:42
Speaker 7: And when I ope my lips, let no dog bark. Oh,
• 4:46
Speaker 7: my Antonio, I do know of these that therefore only
• 4:50
Speaker 7: are reputed wise for saying nothing when I am very
• 4:54
Speaker 7: sure if they should speak, would almost damn those ears,
• 4:58
Speaker 7: which hearing them, would call their brothers fools. I'll tell
• 5:02
Speaker 7: thee more of this another time, But fish not with
• 5:05
Speaker 7: this melancholy bait, for this fool gudgeon this opinion. Come good, Lorenzo,
• 5:11
Speaker 7: very ye, Well a while, I'll end my exhortation after dinner.
• 5:15
Speaker 6: Well, we will leave you then till dinner time. I
• 5:18
Speaker 6: must be one of these same dumb wise men. For
• 5:20
Speaker 6: Graziano never lets me speak.
• 5:23
Speaker 7: Well, keep me company, But two years mo, and thou
• 5:26
Speaker 7: shalt not know the sound of thine own tongue.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: Fare you well, I'll grow a talker for this gear
• 5:32
  Speaker 2: and thanks.
• 5:33
Speaker 7: If faith for silence is only commendable in a neats,
• 5:37
Speaker 7: tongue dried, and a maid not vendable, excient Gratiano and Lorenzo.
• 5:44
  Speaker 2: Is that anything.
• 5:45
  Speaker 8: Now?
• 5:46
Speaker 5: Graciano speaks an infinite deal of nothing more than any
• 5:50
Speaker 5: man in all venice. His reasons are as two grains
• 5:53
Speaker 5: of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff. You shall
• 5:56
Speaker 5: seek them all day, or you find them, and when
• 5:58
Speaker 5: you have them, they are not worth the search.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: Well tell me now, what lady is the same to
• 6:06
Speaker 2: whom you swore a secret pilgrimage that you today promised
• 6:10
Speaker 2: to tell me of.
• 6:11
Speaker 5: Tis not unknown to you, Antonio, how much I have
• 6:16
Speaker 5: disabled mine estate by something showing a more swelling port
• 6:21
Speaker 5: than my faint means would grant continuance. Nor do I
• 6:26
Speaker 5: now make moan to be abridged from such a noble rate.
• 6:30
Speaker 5: But my chief care is to come fairly off from
• 6:33
Speaker 5: the great debts, wherein my time something too prodigal hath
• 6:36
Speaker 5: left me gauged. To you, Antonio, I owe the most
• 6:41
Speaker 5: in money and in love, and from your love I
• 6:44
Speaker 5: have a warranty to unburden all my plots and purposes.
• 6:48
Speaker 5: How to get clear of all the debts I owe?
• 6:50
Speaker 2: I pray you good Bassanio, let me know it, And
• 6:53
Speaker 2: if it stand as you yourself still do within the
• 6:56
Speaker 2: eye of honor, be assured. My purse, my person, my
• 7:01
Speaker 2: extremest means lie all unlocked to your occasions.
• 7:06
Speaker 5: In my school days, when I had lost one shaft,
• 7:09
Speaker 5: I shot his fellow of the self same flight the self,
• 7:13
Speaker 5: same way, with more advised watch to find the other fourth,
• 7:18
Speaker 5: And by adventuring both I oft found both. I urge
• 7:22
Speaker 5: this childhood proof, because what follows is pure innocence. I
• 7:27
Speaker 5: owe you much, and like a wilful youth, that which
• 7:30
Speaker 5: I always lost. But if you pleased to shoot another
• 7:34
Speaker 5: arrow that self way which you did shoot the first,
• 7:37
Speaker 5: I do not doubt, as I will watch the aim
• 7:41
Speaker 5: or to find both, or bring your latter hazard back again,
• 7:44
Speaker 5: And thankfully rest debtor. For the first.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: You know me well and here, and spend but time
• 7:51
Speaker 2: to wind about my love. With circumstance and out of doubt,
• 7:55
Speaker 2: you do me now more wrong in making question of
• 7:58
Speaker 2: my uttermost than if you had made waste of.
• 8:00
  Speaker 9: All I have.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: Then do but say to me what I should do
• 8:04
Speaker 2: that in your knowledge may by me be done? And
• 8:07
Speaker 2: I am pressed unto it.
• 8:10
Speaker 5: Therefore speak in Belmont is a lady richly left, and
• 8:15
Speaker 5: she is fair and fairer than that word of wondrous virtues.
• 8:21
Speaker 5: Sometimes from her eyes I did receive fair speechless messages.
• 8:27
Speaker 5: Her name is Porscha. Nothing under value to Cato's daughter,
• 8:31
Speaker 5: Brutus Porscha. Nor is the wide world ignorant of her worth.
• 8:36
Speaker 5: For the four winds blow in from every coast, renowned suitors,
• 8:40
Speaker 5: and her sunny locks hang on her temples like a
• 8:43
Speaker 5: golden fleece, which makes her seat of Belmont colchis strand
• 8:48
Speaker 5: and many Jason's coming quest of her. Oh, my Antonio
• 8:52
Speaker 5: had I but the means to hold a rival place
• 8:55
Speaker 5: with one of them. I have a mind presages me
• 8:58
Speaker 5: such thrift that I should questionless be fortunate.
• 9:02
Speaker 2: Thou knowest that all my fortunes are at sea. Neither
• 9:06
Speaker 2: have I money nor commodity to raise a present sum. Therefore,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: go forth try what my credit can in venice do
• 9:14
Speaker 2: that shall be racked even to the outermost, to furnish
• 9:16
Speaker 2: the Belmont fair Portia. Go presently inquire, and so will
• 9:22
Speaker 2: I where money is, and I no question make the
• 9:25
Speaker 2: habit of my trust or for my sake.
• 9:28
Speaker 1: Excient Scene two Belmont, a room in Porsche's house, enter
• 9:37
Speaker 1: Portia and Nerissa by my troth Nerissa.
• 9:41
Speaker 10: My little body is weary of this great world.
• 9:45
Speaker 11: You would be, sweet, madam, if your miseries were in
• 9:47
Speaker 11: the same abundance as your good fortunes are. And yet
• 9:50
Speaker 11: for aught, I see they are as sick that surfey
• 9:52
Speaker 11: with too much, as though that starve with nothing. It
• 9:55
Speaker 11: is no mean happiness. Therefore to be seated in the mean.
• 9:58
Speaker 11: Superfluity comes sooner by white hair, but competency lives longer.
• 10:02
Speaker 10: Good sentences and well pronounced.
• 10:04
Speaker 11: They would be better if well followed.
• 10:06
Speaker 10: If to do were as easy as to know what
• 10:09
Speaker 10: were good to do, chapels had been churches, and poor
• 10:12
Speaker 10: men's cottages princes palaces. It is a good divine that
• 10:16
Speaker 10: follows his own instructions. I can easier teach twenty what
• 10:20
Speaker 10: were good to be done, than to be one of
• 10:22
Speaker 10: the twenty to follow mine own teaching. The brain may
• 10:25
Speaker 10: devise laws for the blood, but a hot temper leaps
• 10:29
Speaker 10: o'er a cold decree such a hair as madness the
• 10:32
Speaker 10: youth to skip o'er the meshes of good counsel the cripple.
• 10:36
Speaker 10: But this reasoning is not in the fashion. To choose
• 10:38
Speaker 10: me a husband, o me the word choose. I may
• 10:42
Speaker 10: neither choose who I would nor refuse who I dislike.
• 10:46
Speaker 10: So is the will of a living daughter curbed by
• 10:49
Speaker 10: the will of a dead father. Is it not hard, Nerissa,
• 10:53
Speaker 10: that I cannot choose one nor refuse none.
• 10:55
Speaker 11: Your father was ever virtuous, and holy men at their
• 10:58
Speaker 11: death have good inspirations. Therefore, the lottery that he hath
• 11:01
Speaker 11: devised in these three chests of gold, silver and lead.
• 11:05
Speaker 11: Whereof who chooses his meaning chooses you will no doubt
• 11:08
Speaker 11: never be chosen by any rightly but one who you
• 11:10
Speaker 11: shall rightly love. But what wants is there in your
• 11:13
Speaker 11: affection toward any of these princely sitters that are already come.
• 11:16
Speaker 10: I pray thee over name them, and as thou namest them,
• 11:19
Speaker 10: I will describe them, and according to my description level
• 11:22
  Speaker 10: at my affection.
• 11:24
Speaker 11: First is the Neopolitan prince.
• 11:26
Speaker 10: Ay, that's a colt, indeed, for he doth nothing but
• 11:29
Speaker 10: talk of his horse, and he makes it a great
• 11:31
Speaker 10: appropriation to his own good parts that he can shew
• 11:34
Speaker 10: him himself. I am much afeared, my lady. His mother
• 11:38
Speaker 10: played false with a smith.
• 11:39
Speaker 11: Then there is the County Peltine.
• 11:41
Speaker 10: He doth nothing but frown as who should say an
• 11:44
Speaker 10: you will not have me choose? He hears merry tales
• 11:48
  Speaker 10: and smiles.
• 11:48
  Speaker 7: Not.
• 11:49
Speaker 10: I fear he will prove the weeping philosopher when he
• 11:52
Speaker 10: grows old, being so full of unmannerly sadness in his youth.
• 11:57
Speaker 10: I had rather be married to a death's head with
• 11:59
Speaker 10: a bow in his mouth than to either of these.
• 12:02
Speaker 10: God defend me from these two?
• 12:04
Speaker 11: How say ye? By the French Lord Monsieur Lebon.
• 12:07
Speaker 10: God made him, and therefore let him pass for a
• 12:10
Speaker 10: man in truth? I know it is a sin to
• 12:13
Speaker 10: be a mocker. But he why he hath a horse
• 12:16
Speaker 10: better than the Neapolitan's, a better bad habit of frowning
• 12:19
Speaker 10: than the Count Palatine. He is every man in no man.
• 12:23
Speaker 10: If a throstle sing he falls straight a capering, he
• 12:26
Speaker 10: will fence with his own shadow. If I should marry him,
• 12:30
Speaker 10: I should marry twenty husbands. If he would despise me,
• 12:33
Speaker 10: I would forgive him, For if he love me to madness,
• 12:36
Speaker 10: I shall never requite him.
• 12:38
Speaker 11: What say ye then? To Falkembridge, the young Baron of England.
• 12:41
Speaker 10: You know I say nothing to him, for he understands
• 12:44
Speaker 10: not me nor I him. He hath neither Latin, French
• 12:48
Speaker 10: nor Italian. And you will come into the court and
• 12:51
Speaker 10: swear that I have a poor penniworth in the English
• 12:54
Speaker 10: he is a proper man's picture. But alas who can
• 12:57
Speaker 10: converse with a dumb show how oddly he is suited.
• 13:02
Speaker 10: I think he bought his doublet in Italy, his round
• 13:04
Speaker 10: hose in France, his bonnet in Germany, and his behavior everywhere.
• 13:09
Speaker 11: What think you the Scottish lord his neighbor, that.
• 13:12
Speaker 10: He hath a neighborly charity in him? For he borrowed
• 13:15
Speaker 10: a box of the ear of the Englishman and swore
• 13:18
Speaker 10: he would pay him again when he was able. I
• 13:20
Speaker 10: think the Frenchman became his surety and sealed under for another.
• 13:24
Speaker 11: I like you the young German. The Duke of Saxon
• 13:26
  Speaker 11: is nephew.
• 13:27
Speaker 10: Very vilely in the morning when he is sober, and
• 13:30
Speaker 10: most vilely in the afternoon when he is drunk. When
• 13:33
Speaker 10: he is best, he is a little worse than a man,
• 13:36
Speaker 10: And when he is worst he is little better than
• 13:38
Speaker 10: a beast. And the worst fall that ever fell. I
• 13:41
Speaker 10: hope I shall make shift to go without him.
• 13:44
Speaker 11: If he should offer to choose, and choose the right casket,
• 13:47
Speaker 11: you should refuse to perform your father's phil if you
• 13:49
Speaker 11: should refuse to accept him.
• 13:51
Speaker 10: Therefore, for fear of the worst, I pray thee set
• 13:54
Speaker 10: a deep glass of Rhenish wine on the contrary casket,
• 13:57
Speaker 10: For if the devil be within and that temptation without,
• 14:00
Speaker 10: I know he will choose it. I will do anything
• 14:03
Speaker 10: nearsa ere, I will be married to a sponge.
• 14:06
Speaker 11: You need not fear, Lady, the having any of these lords.
• 14:08
Speaker 11: They've acquainted me with the determinations, which is indeed, to
• 14:11
Speaker 11: return to their home and to trouble you with no
• 14:14
Speaker 11: more suit, unless he may be won by some other
• 14:16
Speaker 11: sort than your father's imposition. Depending on the caskets.
• 14:19
Speaker 10: If I live to be as old as Sybylla, I
• 14:22
Speaker 10: will die as chaste as Diana, unless I be obtained
• 14:26
Speaker 10: by the manner of my father's will. I am glad
• 14:29
Speaker 10: this parcel of wooers are so reasonable, for there is
• 14:32
Speaker 10: not one among them, but I dote on his very absence,
• 14:35
Speaker 10: and I pray God grant them a fair departure.
• 14:38
Speaker 11: Do you not remember, lady, in your father's time a Venetian,
• 14:42
Speaker 11: a scholar, and a soldier that can hither in company
• 14:44
Speaker 11: of the marquis of Monterrey. Yes, yes, it was the Sanio,
• 14:49
Speaker 11: as I think so was he called Tree Madame. He
• 14:53
Speaker 11: of all the men that ever my foolish eyes looked upon,
• 14:55
Speaker 11: was the best deserving a fair lady.
• 14:57
Speaker 10: I remember him well, and I remember him worthy of
• 15:00
  Speaker 10: thy praise.
• 15:02
  Speaker 1: Enter a servant.
• 15:03
Speaker 12: How now, what news the four strangers seek for? You, madam,
• 15:07
Speaker 12: to take their leave. And there is a forerunner come
• 15:10
Speaker 12: from a fifth, the Prince of Morocco, who brings word
• 15:13
Speaker 12: the prince his master will be here tonight.
• 15:15
Speaker 10: If I could bid the fifth welcome with so good
• 15:18
Speaker 10: heart as I can bid the other four, farewell, I
• 15:20
Speaker 10: should be glad of his approach. If he have the
• 15:23
Speaker 10: condition of a saint and the complexion of a devil,
• 15:26
Speaker 10: I had rather he should shrive me than wive me.
• 15:29
Speaker 10: Come narissa, sirah, go before whilst we shut the gate
• 15:33
Speaker 10: upon one wooer, another knocks at the door.
• 15:37
Speaker 1: Exciant scene three venice a public place, Enter Basangnon and shylock.
• 15:47
  Speaker 8: Three thousand dockets.
• 15:49
Speaker 5: Well, I, sir, for three months.
• 15:52
Speaker 8: For three months, Well for.
• 15:55
Speaker 5: The witch, as I told you, Antonio shall be bound.
• 15:59
Speaker 8: Antonio shall be come bound.
• 16:02
Speaker 5: Well may you stead me? Will you pleasure me? Shall
• 16:06
Speaker 5: I know your answer?
• 16:07
Speaker 8: Three thousand ducats for three months and Antonio bound?
• 16:12
  Speaker 5: Your answer to.
• 16:13
Speaker 8: That Antonio is a good man?
• 16:16
Speaker 5: Have you heard any imputation to the contrary?
• 16:20
Speaker 8: No, no, no no. My meaning in saying he is a
• 16:23
Speaker 8: good man is to have you understand me that he
• 16:25
Speaker 8: is sufficient. Yet his means are in supposition. He hath
• 16:30

• 17:45
Speaker 8: Aside, how like a fawning publican he looks. I hate him,
• 17:51
Speaker 8: for he is a Christian. But more for that in
• 17:54
Speaker 8: low simplicity he lends out money gratis and brings down
• 17:58
Speaker 8: the rate of usance here with us in venice. If
• 18:02
Speaker 8: I can catch him once upon the hip, I will
• 18:05
Speaker 8: feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him. He hates
• 18:09
Speaker 8: our sacred nation, and he rails even there where merchants
• 18:13
Speaker 8: most to congregate on me my bargains and my well
• 18:17
Speaker 8: won thrift, which he calls impressed cursed be my tribe.
• 18:21
Speaker 8: If I forgive him, Shylock, do you hear I am

Speaker 8: fair good signor your worship was the last man in
• 18:47
  Speaker 8: our mouths Shylock.
• 18:49
Speaker 2: Albeit I neither land nor burrow by taking, nor by

• 19:18
Speaker 8: neither lend nor borrow upon advantage.
• 19:20
Speaker 2: I do never use it.
• 19:23
Speaker 8: When Jacob grazed his uncle Laban's sheep, this Jacob, from
• 19:27
Speaker 8: our holy Abram, was, as his wise mother wrought in
• 19:30
Speaker 8: his behalf, the third possessor. I he was the third.
• 19:34
Speaker 2: And what of him did he take interest?
• 19:37
Speaker 8: No, not take interest, not as you would say, directly interest.
• 19:41
Speaker 8: Mark what Jacob did when Laban and himself were compromised,
• 19:45
Speaker 8: that all the emlings, which were streaked and piede should
• 19:48
Speaker 8: fall as Jacob's hires. The ewes being rank an end
• 19:52
Speaker 8: of autumn, turned to the rams. And when the work
• 19:56
Speaker 8: of generation was between these wooly breeders, in the act
• 19:59
Speaker 8: the skillful sh the shepherd peeled me certain wants, and
• 20:02
Speaker 8: in the doing of the deed of kind, he stuck
• 20:04
Speaker 8: them up before the fulsome use who, then, conceiving did
• 20:08
Speaker 8: an evening time fall party colored lambs, And those were Jacob's.
• 20:13
Speaker 8: This was a way to thrive, and he was blessed.
• 20:16
Speaker 8: And thrift is blessing if men steal it, not This was.
• 20:21
Speaker 2: A venture, sir, that Jacob served for a thing not
• 20:24
Speaker 2: in his power to bring to pass, but swayed and
• 20:27
Speaker 2: fashioned by the hand of heaven? Was this inserted to
• 20:31
Speaker 2: make interest good? Or is your gold and silver ooze?
• 20:35
Speaker 8: And rams? I cannot tell I make it breed as fast?
• 20:40
Speaker 8: But note me, signor.
• 20:42
Speaker 2: Mark you this Passanio. The devil can cite scripture for
• 20:45
Speaker 2: his purpose, an evil soul producing holy witnesses like a
• 20:49
Speaker 2: villain with a smiling cheek, a goodly apple rotten at
• 20:53
Speaker 2: the heart. Oh, what a goodly outside falsehood?
• 20:57
Speaker 8: Hath three thousand docs? Tis a good round sum three
• 21:03

• 21:05

• 21:09
Speaker 8: You, signor Antonio many a time? And oft in rialto
• 21:14
Speaker 8: you have rated me about my moneys and my nuisances.
• 21:18
Speaker 8: Still have I borne it with a patient shrug? For
• 21:22
Speaker 8: sufferance is the badge of all our tribe. You call
• 21:26
Speaker 8: me misbelieva, cutthroat dog, and spat upon my Jewish gabardine,
• 21:33
Speaker 8: and all for use of that which is mine own. Well,
• 21:37
Speaker 8: then it now appears you need my help. Go to
• 21:42
Speaker 8: Then you come to me, and you say shylock. We
• 21:44
Speaker 8: would have moneyes you say, so, you that did void
• 21:49
Speaker 8: your room upon my beard and foot me as you
• 21:52
Speaker 8: spun a stranger cur over your threshold. Money's is your suit?
• 21:58
Speaker 8: What should I say to you? Should I not say,
• 22:02
Speaker 8: hath a dog money? Is it possible a cirk can
• 22:07
Speaker 8: lend three thousand ducats? Or shall I bend low and
• 22:13
Speaker 8: in a bondman's key, with bated breath and whispering humbleness,
• 22:17
Speaker 8: say this fair, sir. You spit on me on Wednesday
• 22:21
Speaker 8: last you spurned me on such a day. Another time
• 22:24
Speaker 8: you called me dog. And for these courtesies I'll lend
• 22:28
Speaker 8: you thus much monies.
• 22:29
Speaker 2: I am as like to call thee so again, to
• 22:32
Speaker 2: speed on thee again, to spurn thee too. If thou
• 22:36
Speaker 2: wilt lend this money, lend it not as to thy friends.
• 22:39
Speaker 2: For when did friendship take a breed for barren mettle
• 22:42
Speaker 2: of his friend? But lend it rather to thine enemy, who,
• 22:47
Speaker 2: if he brake, thou mayest with better face exact the penalty.
• 22:52
Speaker 8: Why look how you storm? I would be friends with
• 22:57
Speaker 8: you and have your love. Forget what the shames that
• 23:00
Speaker 8: you have stained me with? Supply your present wants and
• 23:04
Speaker 8: take no deit of usance for my money's and you'll

• 24:12
Speaker 8: tell me this if he should break his day, what
• 24:14
Speaker 8: should I gain by the exaction of the forfeiture? A
• 24:18
Speaker 8: pound of man's flesh taken from a man is not
• 24:21
Speaker 8: so estimable profitable, neither as flesh of muttons, beefs or goats.
• 24:27
Speaker 8: I say to buy his favor. I extend this friendship

Speaker 10: nice direction of a maiden's eyes. Besides, the lottery of
• 26:21
Speaker 10: my destiny bars me the right of voluntary choosing. But
• 26:25
Speaker 10: if my father had not scanted me and hedged me
• 26:28
Speaker 10: by his wit to yield myself his wife, who wins

• 27:13
Speaker 13: is the better man the greater throw may turn by
• 27:17
Speaker 13: fortune from the weaker hand. So is Alsides beaten by
• 27:21
Speaker 13: his page, And so may I blind fortune leading me
• 27:26
Speaker 13: miss that which one unworthier may attain and die with grieving.
• 27:31
Speaker 10: You must take your chance, and either not attempt to
• 27:34

• 28:16
Speaker 14: tempts me, saying to me, Gobolncelot Gobo, good Luncelot, or
• 28:22
Speaker 14: good Gobo or good Lancelot Gobo, use your legs, take
• 28:26
Speaker 14: the start, run away. My conscience says, no, take heed,

• 29:00
Speaker 14: my honest friend, Launcelot, being an honest man's son, or

Speaker 14: and to run away from the Jew. I should be
• 29:40
Speaker 14: ruled by the fiend, who, saving your reverence, is the
• 29:44
Speaker 14: devil himself. Certainly, the Jew is the very devil in
• 29:48
Speaker 14: carnal and in my conscience, my conscience is but a
• 29:53
Speaker 14: kind of hard conscience to offer to counsel me to

Speaker 14: rare fortune. Here comes the man to him. Father, For
• 34:09
Speaker 14: I am a Jew. If I serve the Jew any.
• 34:12
Speaker 1: Longer, enter Bassanio with Leonardo with other followers.
• 34:18
Speaker 5: You may do so, but let it be so hasted
• 34:20
Speaker 5: that supper be ready at the farthest by five of
• 34:23
Speaker 5: the clock. See these letters delivered, put the liberties to making,
• 34:26
Speaker 5: and desired Rasciano to come anon to my lodging.
• 34:29
Speaker 1: Exit a servant to him, Father, God, bless your worship, mercy.
• 34:34
Speaker 5: What'st thou aught with me?
• 34:36
Speaker 15: Here is my son, Sir, a poor boy.
• 34:38
Speaker 14: Not a poor boy, Sir, but the rich Jews Man
• 34:42
Speaker 14: that would, Sir, as my father shall specify, he.
• 34:45
Speaker 15: Has a great infection, Sir, as one would say, to serve.
• 34:49
Speaker 14: Indeed, the short and the long is I serve the
• 34:52
Speaker 14: Jew and have a desire, as my father shall specify.
• 34:56
Speaker 15: His master and he saving your Worship's reverence, are scarce
• 35:00
  Speaker 15: cater cousins.
• 35:01
Speaker 14: To be brief, the very truth is that the Jew,
• 35:04
Speaker 14: having done me wrong, doth cause me, as my father
• 35:07
Speaker 14: being I hope an old man shall fruitify unto you.
• 35:11
Speaker 15: I have here a dish of doves that I would
• 35:13
Speaker 15: bestow upon your worship. And my suit is.
• 35:16
Speaker 14: In very brief. The suit is impertinent to myself, as
• 35:20
Speaker 14: your Worship shall know by this honest old man. And
• 35:24
Speaker 14: though I say it, though old man, yet poor man,
• 35:28
  Speaker 14: my father.
• 35:29
Speaker 5: One speak for you both.
• 35:30
Speaker 8: What would you serve? You? Sir?
• 35:33
Speaker 15: That is the very defect of the matter, Sir, I
• 35:36
Speaker 15: know thee well thou hast obtained thy suit.
• 35:40
Speaker 5: Shylock, thy master spoke with me this day, and hath
• 35:44
Speaker 5: preferred thee if it be preferment to leave a rich
• 35:47
Speaker 5: Jew's service to become the follower of so poor a gentleman.
• 35:51
Speaker 14: The old proverb is very well parted between my master
• 35:54
Speaker 14: Shylock and you, sir. You have the grace of God, sir,
• 36:00
Speaker 14: and he hath enough.
• 36:01
Speaker 5: Now speaks it. Well, go father with thy son, take
• 36:05
Speaker 5: leave of thy old master, and inquire my lodging out.
• 36:08
  Speaker 1: To a servant.
• 36:09
Speaker 5: Give him a livery more guarded than his fellows.
• 36:12
Speaker 14: See it done, father, in I cannot get a service. No,
• 36:16
Speaker 14: I have ne'er a tongue in my head looking on
• 36:19
Speaker 14: his palm. Well, if any man in Italy have a
• 36:23
Speaker 14: fairer table, which doth offer to swear upon a book,
• 36:26
Speaker 14: I shall have good fortune. Go too. Here's a simple
• 36:30
Speaker 14: line of life. Here's a small trifle of wives, alas
• 36:34
Speaker 14: fifteen wives is nothing, eleven widows and nine maids is
• 36:38
Speaker 14: a simple coming in for one man. And then to
• 36:42
Speaker 14: scrape drowning thrice, and to be in peril of my
• 36:46
Speaker 14: life with the edge of a featherbed. Here are simple scapes. Well,
• 36:51
Speaker 14: if fortune be a woman, she's a good wench for
• 36:53
Speaker 14: this gear. Father, Come, I'll take my leave of the
• 36:59
Speaker 14: jew in the twinkling of an.
• 37:00
Speaker 1: Eye, excellent Launcelot and old Gobo.
• 37:05
Speaker 5: I pray thee good Leonardo, think on this. These things
• 37:08
Speaker 5: being bought and orderly bestowed, return in haste, for I
• 37:12
Speaker 5: do feast tonight my best esteemed acquaintance.
• 37:15
Speaker 3: Hi thee go, My best endeavor shall be done herein.
• 37:20
  Speaker 1: Enter, Graciano.
• 37:21
Speaker 7: Where is your master yonder?
• 37:23
  Speaker 5: Sir?
• 37:23
Speaker 7: He walks exit, Senor Bassanio, Graciano, I have suit to you.
• 37:30
Speaker 5: You have obtained it.
• 37:31
Speaker 7: You must not deny me. I must go with you
• 37:34
  Speaker 7: to Belmont.
• 37:35
Speaker 5: Why then you must but hear thee Graciano, thou art
• 37:39
Speaker 5: too wild, too rude and bold of voice, parts that
• 37:43
Speaker 5: become mee happily enough. And in such eyes as ours
• 37:45
Speaker 5: appear not false. But where thou art not known, why
• 37:49
Speaker 5: there they show something too liberal. Pray THEE take pain
• 37:55
Speaker 5: to allay with some cold drops of modesty, thy skipping spirit,
• 38:00
Speaker 5: lest through thy wild behavior I be misconstrued in the
• 38:04
Speaker 5: place I go to and lose my hopes.
• 38:07
Speaker 7: Senor Bassanio, hear me if I do not put on
• 38:10
Speaker 7: a sober habit, talk with respect and swear. But now
• 38:14
Speaker 7: and then where prayer books in my pocket? Look demurely,
• 38:18
Speaker 7: nay more, while Grace is saying, hood mine eyes, thus
• 38:22
Speaker 7: with my hat and sigh and say amen, use all
• 38:27
Speaker 7: the observance of civility, like one well studied in a
• 38:30
Speaker 7: sad ostend to please his grandame. Never trust me more.
• 38:35
Speaker 5: Well, we shall see your bearing.
• 38:38
Speaker 7: Nay, but I bar tonight. You shall not gauge me
• 38:41
Speaker 7: by what we do to night.
• 38:43
Speaker 5: No, that were pity. I would entreat you rather to
• 38:46
Speaker 5: put on your boldest suit of mirth, for we are
• 38:49
Speaker 5: friends that purpose merriment. But fare you well.
• 38:52
Speaker 7: I have some business and I must to Lorenzo and
• 38:55
Speaker 7: the rest. But we will visit you at supper time.

• 39:07
Speaker 1: Enter Jessica and Launcelot.
• 39:10
Speaker 16: I am sorry thou wilt leave my father, so our
• 39:13
Speaker 16: house is hell, and thou a merry devil, didst rob
• 39:17
Speaker 16: it of some taste of tediousness. But fare thee well.
• 39:22
Speaker 16: There is a ducat for thee and Launcelot soon at
• 39:25
Speaker 16: supper shalt thou see Lorenzo, who is thy new master's guest.
• 39:31
Speaker 16: Give him this letter, Do it secretly, and so farewell.
• 39:35
Speaker 16: I would not have my father see me in talk
• 39:37
  Speaker 16: with thee.
• 39:38
Speaker 14: Adieu, tears exhibit my tongue, most beautiful pagan, most sweet jew.
• 39:45
Speaker 14: If a Christian, do not play the knave and get thee,
• 39:48
Speaker 14: I am much deceived. But adieu, these foolish drops do
• 39:53
Speaker 14: something drown my manly spirit.
• 39:55
Speaker 16: Adieu, farewell, good Launcelot, Exit Launcelot, alack, What heinous sin
• 40:03
Speaker 16: is it in me to be ashamed to be my
• 40:05
Speaker 16: father's child? But though I am a daughter to his blood,
• 40:09
Speaker 16: I am not to his manners. O Lorenzo, If thou
• 40:14
Speaker 16: keep promise, I shall end this strife, become a Christian
• 40:19
Speaker 16: and thy loving wife.
• 40:22
Speaker 1: Exit scene four the same a street. Enter Greciano, Lorenzo,
• 40:32

Speaker 6: at my lodging, and return all in an hour.
• 40:42
Speaker 7: We have not made good preparation.
• 40:45
Speaker 3: We have not spoke as yet of torch bearers.
• 40:47
Speaker 4: Tis vile, unless it may be quaintly ordered and better
• 40:50
Speaker 4: in my mind, not undertook.
• 40:52
Speaker 6: Tis now but four o'clock we have two hours to
• 40:54
  Speaker 6: furnish us.
• 40:56
Speaker 1: Enter Launcelot with a letter, friend Land, what is the news?
• 41:01
Speaker 14: And it shall please you to break up this it
• 41:05
Speaker 14: shall seem to signify.
• 41:07
Speaker 6: I know the hand in faith'tis a fair hand, And
• 41:11
Speaker 6: whither that a paper it writ on is the fair
• 41:14
  Speaker 6: hand that writ.
• 41:15
Speaker 7: Love news in faith.
• 41:17
Speaker 14: By your leave, sir, whither goest thou, Mary, Sir, to
• 41:22
Speaker 14: bid my old master, the jew to sup tonight with
• 41:25
Speaker 14: my new master, the Christian.
• 41:28
Speaker 6: Hold here take this tell gentle Jessica, I will not
• 41:32
Speaker 6: fail her. Speak at privately, Go gentlemen, exit Lnceolt. Will

• 41:42
Speaker 6: of a torch bearer.
• 41:43
Speaker 3: Hi, Mary, I'll be gone about it straight, And so.
• 41:46
Speaker 6: Will I meet me and Graciano at Graciano's lodging some hour.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: Hence tis good we do so.
• 41:54
Speaker 1: Excellent Salarino and Selanio.
• 41:57
Speaker 7: Was not that letter from fair Jessica.
• 42:00
Speaker 6: I must needs tell thee all she hath directed. How
• 42:04
Speaker 6: I shall take her from her father's house, What gold
• 42:07
Speaker 6: and jewels she is furnished with? What pages suit she
• 42:11
Speaker 6: hath in readiness? If era a jew her father come
• 42:15
Speaker 6: to heaven, it will be for his gentle daughter's sake.
• 42:19
Speaker 6: And never dare misfortune cross her foot unless she do
• 42:22
Speaker 6: it under this excuse that she is issued to a
• 42:26
Speaker 6: faithless Jew. Come go with me, pursue this as thou
• 42:31
Speaker 6: goest fair. Jessica, shall be my torch bearer.
• 42:35
Speaker 1: Extant Scene five, the same before Shylock's house. Enter Shylock
• 42:45
  Speaker 1: and Launcelot.
• 42:47
Speaker 8: Well, thou shalt see thy eyes, shall be thy judge
• 42:51
Speaker 8: the difference of old Shylock and Bassanio. What Jessica, thou
• 42:57
Speaker 8: shalt not gorman dies as thou hast done with me?
• 43:00
Speaker 8: What Jessica, and sleep and snore and rend the peril out? Why, Jessica,
• 43:07
Speaker 8: I say, why, Jessica, who bids thee call? I do
• 43:12
Speaker 8: not bid thee call?
• 43:13
Speaker 14: Your worship was wont to tell me I could do
• 43:15
  Speaker 14: nothing without bidding.
• 43:17
  Speaker 1: Enter, Jessica, call.
• 43:19
Speaker 16: You what is your will?
• 43:21
Speaker 8: I am bid forced to supper? Jessica, there are my keys,
• 43:25
Speaker 8: But wherefore should I go? I am not bid for love?
• 43:29
Speaker 8: They flatter me, But yet I'll go in hate to
• 43:33
Speaker 8: feed upon the prodigal Christian. Jessica, my girl, look to
• 43:37
Speaker 8: my house. I am right loth to go. There is
• 43:41
Speaker 8: some ill a brewing towards my rest, for I did
• 43:44
Speaker 8: dream of money bags.
• 43:45
Speaker 14: Tonight I beseech you, sir, go my young master doth
• 43:49
Speaker 14: expect your reproach, so do I his, and they have
• 43:54
Speaker 14: conspired together. I will not say you shall see a mask,
• 43:58
Speaker 14: but if you do, and it was not for nothing
• 44:01
Speaker 14: that my nose fell a bleeding on Black Monday last
• 44:04
Speaker 14: at six o'clock in the morning, falling out that year
• 44:07
Speaker 14: on ash Wednesday was four year in the afternoon.
• 44:11
Speaker 8: What are their masks? Hear you me, Jessica, lock up
• 44:15
Speaker 8: my doors. And when you hear the drum and the
• 44:17
Speaker 8: vile squealing of the rye necked fife, clamber not you
• 44:21
Speaker 8: up to the casements, then, nor thrust your head into
• 44:24
Speaker 8: the public street to gaze on Christian fools with varnished faces.
• 44:28
Speaker 8: But stop my houses, ears, I mean my casements. Let
• 44:32
Speaker 8: not the sound of shallow foppery enter my sober house
• 44:36
Speaker 8: by Jacob's staff. I swear I have no mind of
• 44:39
Speaker 8: feasting forth tonight. But I will go. Go you before me, Sarah,
• 44:45
Speaker 8: say I will come.
• 44:46
Speaker 14: I will go before sir mistress. Look out the window
• 44:50
Speaker 14: for all this there will come a Christian by will
• 44:54
  Speaker 14: be worth a Jewis's eye.
• 44:56
  Speaker 1: Exit Launcelot.
• 44:58
Speaker 8: What says that fool of hay Gar's offspring? Hah.
• 45:01
Speaker 16: His words were farewell mistress, nothing else.
• 45:05
Speaker 8: The patch is kind enough, but a huge feeder snails
• 45:09
Speaker 8: slow in profit, and he sleeps by day more than
• 45:12
Speaker 8: the wild cat. Drones hive not with me. Therefore I
• 45:17
Speaker 8: part with him, and part with him to one that
• 45:19
Speaker 8: I would have him help to waste his borrowed purse. Well, Jessica,
• 45:26
Speaker 8: go in, perhaps I will return immediately. Do as I
• 45:30
Speaker 8: bid you. Shut doors after you fast, bind fast, find
• 45:35
Speaker 8: a proverb never stale in thrifty mind.
• 45:38
Speaker 16: Exit farewell, And if my fortune be not crossed, I
• 45:44
Speaker 16: have a father, you a daughter lost.
• 45:48
Speaker 1: Exit Scene six. The same enter Gratiano and Salerino messed.
• 45:58
Speaker 7: This is the penthouse under which Lord Lorenzo desired us
• 46:01
  Speaker 7: to make stand.
• 46:02
Speaker 3: His hour is almost past, and.
• 46:04
Speaker 7: It is marvel he outdwells his hour for lovers ever
• 46:07
Speaker 7: run before the clock.
• 46:09
Speaker 3: Oh ten times faster. Venus pigeons fly to seal love's
• 46:13
Speaker 3: bonds new maid than they are wont to keep obliged
• 46:15
  Speaker 3: faith unforfeited.
• 46:17
Speaker 7: That ever holds who riseth from a feast with that
• 46:21
Speaker 7: keen appetite that he sits down? Where is the horse
• 46:24
Speaker 7: that doth untread again his tedious measures with the unbated
• 46:28
Speaker 7: fire that he did pace them first. All things that
• 46:32
Speaker 7: are are with more spirit chaste than enjoyed. How like
• 46:36
Speaker 7: a younger or a prodigal, the scarfed bark puts from
• 46:40
Speaker 7: her native bay, hugged and embraced by the strumpet wind.
• 46:44
Speaker 7: How like the prodigal doth she return with overweathered ribs
• 46:48
Speaker 7: and ragged sails, lean rent and beggared by the strumpet wind.
• 46:54
Speaker 3: Here comes Lorenzo. More of this hereafter, enter.
• 46:57
Speaker 6: Lorenzo, sweet friends, your patient for my long abode. Not
• 47:02
Speaker 6: I but my affairs have made you wait. When you
• 47:05
Speaker 6: shall please to play the thieves for wives, I'll watch
• 47:10
Speaker 6: as long for you. Then approach here dwells my father
• 47:14
Speaker 6: jew Ho who's within?
• 47:17
Speaker 1: Enter Jessica above in boys clothes?
• 47:22
  Speaker 4: Who are you?
• 47:23
  Speaker 8: Tell me?
• 47:23
Speaker 16: For more certainty, howbeit I'll swear that I do know your.
• 47:27
Speaker 6: Tongue, Lorenzo, and thy love.
• 47:30
Speaker 16: Lorenzo certain and my love indeed, for who love I
• 47:35
Speaker 16: so much? And now who knows but you Lorenzo, Whether
• 47:38
  Speaker 16: I am.
• 47:39
Speaker 6: Yours heaven and thy thoughts are witness that thou art.
• 47:44
Speaker 16: Here catch this casket. It is worth the pains. I
• 47:48
Speaker 16: am glad tis night. You do not look on me,
• 47:51
Speaker 16: for I am much ashamed of my exchange. But love
• 47:54
Speaker 16: is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that
• 47:58
Speaker 16: themselves commit. For if they could, Cupid himself would blush
• 48:02
Speaker 16: to see me. Thus transform into a.
• 48:05
Speaker 6: Boy, descend, for you must be my torch bearer.
• 48:08
Speaker 16: What must I hold a candle to my shames? They
• 48:12
Speaker 16: and themselves good sooth are too too light? What is
• 48:16
Speaker 16: an office of discovery?
• 48:17
  Speaker 8: Love?
• 48:17
Speaker 16: And I should be obscured?
• 48:20
Speaker 6: So are you sweet, even in the lovely garnish of
• 48:23
Speaker 6: a boy. But come at once for the closed night
• 48:26
Speaker 6: doth play the runaway, and we are stayed. For at
• 48:29
  Speaker 6: Bassanio's feast, I will.
• 48:31
Speaker 16: Make fast the doors and gild myself with sammo ducats,
• 48:34
Speaker 16: and be with you straight exit above.
• 48:38
Speaker 7: Now by my hood a gentile, and no jew.
• 48:42
  Speaker 1: Be shrew me.
• 48:42
Speaker 6: But I love her heartily, for she is wise, if
• 48:45
Speaker 6: I can judge of her, and fair she is, If
• 48:48
Speaker 6: that mine eyes be true and true, she is as
• 48:52
Speaker 6: she hath proved herself, and therefore like herself, wise, fair
• 48:56
Speaker 6: and true? Shall she be placed in my constant?
• 48:59
  Speaker 1: So enter Jessica.
• 49:02
Speaker 6: What art thou come on, gentlemen, away our masking maids
• 49:06
Speaker 6: by this time for a stay.
• 49:08
Speaker 1: Exit with Jessica and Salerino. Enter Antonio, who's there?
• 49:16
  Speaker 7: Signor Antonio?
• 49:17
  Speaker 8: Five?
• 49:18
Speaker 2: Five Gratiano? Where are all the rest? Tis nine o'clock,
• 49:23
Speaker 2: our friends. I'll stay for you, no mask tonight. The
• 49:26
Speaker 2: wind has come about, Butsanio presently will go aboard. I
• 49:31
Speaker 2: have sent twenty out to seek for you.
• 49:33
Speaker 7: I am glad aunt. I desire no more delight than
• 49:37
Speaker 7: to be under sail and gone tonight.
• 49:40
Speaker 1: Excent Scene seven Belmont, a room in Porsche's house, flourish
• 49:48
Speaker 1: of cornets. Enter Porscha with the Prince of Morocco and
• 49:55
  Speaker 1: their trains.
• 49:56
Speaker 10: Go draw aside the curtains and discover the several caskets
• 49:59
Speaker 10: to this noble prince, Now make your choice.
• 50:03
Speaker 13: The first of gold, who this inscription bears, who chooseth me,
• 50:08
Speaker 13: shall gain what many men desire. The second silver, which
• 50:13
Speaker 13: this promise carries, who chooseth me, shall get as much
• 50:17
Speaker 13: as he deserves. This third dull lead with warning all
• 50:22
Speaker 13: his blunt. Who chooseth me must give and hazard all
• 50:25
Speaker 13: he hath. How shall I know if I do choose
• 50:28
  Speaker 13: the right.
• 50:29
Speaker 10: The one of them contains my picture, Prince. If you
• 50:32
Speaker 10: choose that, then I am yours withal.
• 50:35
Speaker 13: Some God direct my judgment. Let me see. I will
• 50:40
Speaker 13: survey the inscriptions back again. What says this leaden casket,
• 50:45
Speaker 13: who chooseth me must give an hazard? All he hath
• 50:50
Speaker 13: must give for what for lead? Hazard? For lead? This
• 50:55
Speaker 13: casket threatens men that hazard? All do it in hope
• 50:59
Speaker 13: of fair advantage. A golden mind stoops not to shows
• 51:03
Speaker 13: of dross. I'll then nor give nor hazard aught for lead?
• 51:08
Speaker 13: What says the silver with her virgin hue, who chooseth me,
• 51:13
Speaker 13: shall get as much as he deserves, as much as
• 51:16
Speaker 13: he deserves. Pause there, Morocco, and weigh thy value with
• 51:20
Speaker 13: an even hand. If thou beest rated by thy estimation,
• 51:25
Speaker 13: thou dost deserve enough. And yet enough may not extend
• 51:29
Speaker 13: so far as to the lady, And yet to be
• 51:32
Speaker 13: afeared of my deserving were but a weak disabling of
• 51:35
Speaker 13: myself as much as I deserve. Why that's the lady.
• 51:41
Speaker 13: I do in birth deserve her, and in fortunes, in graces,
• 51:46
Speaker 13: and in qualities of breeding. But more than these, in
• 51:50
Speaker 13: love I do deserve. What if I strayed no farther
• 51:55
Speaker 13: but chose here. Let's see once more, this saying graved gold.
• 52:01
Speaker 13: Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire. Why
• 52:06
Speaker 13: that's the lady. All the world desires her. From the
• 52:09
Speaker 13: four corners of the earth. They come to kiss the
• 52:12
Speaker 13: shrine this mortal breathing saint. The Hyrcanian deserts and the
• 52:17
Speaker 13: vasty wilds of White Arabia are as thoroughfares now for
• 52:20
Speaker 13: princes to come view fair Portia, the watery kingdom whose
• 52:25
Speaker 13: ambitious head spits in the face of heaven. Is no
• 52:28
Speaker 13: bar to stop the foreign spirits. But they come as
• 52:31
Speaker 13: o'er a brook to see fair Portia. One of these
• 52:36
Speaker 13: three contains her heavenly picture? Is it like that lead
• 52:40
  Speaker 13: contains her?
• 52:41
  Speaker 8: Tware?
• 52:42
Speaker 13: Damnation? To think so base a thought it were too
• 52:45
Speaker 13: gross to rib her sarecloth in the obscure grave? Or
• 52:49
Speaker 13: shall I think in silver? She's immured, being ten times
• 52:53
Speaker 13: under value to tried gold, Oh, sinful thought, never so
• 52:58
Speaker 13: rich a gem was set in worse than god old.
• 53:01
Speaker 13: They have an England, a coin that bears the figure
• 53:03
Speaker 13: of an angel stamped in gold. But that's in sculpt
• 53:07
Speaker 13: upon But here an angel in a golden bed lies
• 53:11
Speaker 13: all within deliver me the key? Here do I choose
• 53:15
Speaker 13: and thrive I as I may.
• 53:17
Speaker 10: There, take it, Prince, and if my form lie there,
• 53:20
Speaker 10: then I am yours.
• 53:23
Speaker 1: He unlocks the golden casket.
• 53:26
Speaker 13: Oh hell, what have we here? A carrion death, within
• 53:30
Speaker 13: whose empty eye there is a written scroll. I'll read
• 53:34
Speaker 13: the writing. All that glisters is not gold. Often have
• 53:39
Speaker 13: you heard that? Told many a man his life hath sold,
• 53:42
Speaker 13: but my outside to behold gilded tombs? Do worms in fold?
• 53:48
Speaker 13: Had you been as wise as bold, young, and limbs
• 53:51
Speaker 13: in judgment, old, your answer had not been enscrolled? Fare
• 53:56
Speaker 13: you well? Your suit is cold cold, indeed, had labor lost?
• 54:04
Speaker 13: Then farewell, heat and welcome frost. Portia, adieu. I have
• 54:10
Speaker 13: to grieve de heart to take a tedious leave, thus
• 54:14
  Speaker 13: lose his part.
• 54:15
Speaker 1: Exit with his train, flourish of cornets.
• 54:20
Speaker 10: A gentle riddance, draw the curtains, go let all of
• 54:25
Speaker 10: his complexion choose me so exciant.
• 54:30
Speaker 1: Scene eight venice a street, enter Salerino and Salango.
• 54:37
Speaker 3: Why man I saw Bissanio under sail with him? Is
• 54:40
Speaker 3: Gratiano gone along and in their ship? I am sure
• 54:43
  Speaker 3: Lorenzo is.
• 54:44
Speaker 4: Not the villain. Jew with outcries raised the duke who
• 54:48
Speaker 4: went with him to search Bassanio's ship.
• 54:51
Speaker 3: He came too late, the ship was under sail. But
• 54:53
Speaker 3: there the Duke was given to understand that in a
• 54:55
Speaker 3: gondola were seen together Lorenzo and his amorous Jessica beside duds.
• 55:00
Speaker 3: Antonio certified the Duke they were not with Bissanio in
• 55:03
  Speaker 3: his ship.
• 55:04
Speaker 4: I never heard a passion so confused, so strange, outrageous,
• 55:08
Speaker 4: and so variable as the dog jud did utter in
• 55:11
Speaker 4: the streets. My daughter, Oh my ducats, Oh, my daughter
• 55:15
Speaker 4: fled with a Christian, Oh my Christian ducats, justice, the law,
• 55:19
Speaker 4: my ducats, and my daughter. A sealed bag, two sealed
• 55:22
Speaker 4: bags of ducats, of double ducats stolen from me by
• 55:25
Speaker 4: my daughter. And jewels two stones too rich and precious
• 55:28
Speaker 4: stones stolen by my daughter, just as find the girls.
• 55:32
Speaker 4: She had the stones upon her and the ducats.
• 55:34
Speaker 3: Why all the boys in Venice follow him crying his stones,
• 55:38
Speaker 3: his daughter and his ducats.
• 55:40
Speaker 4: Let good Antonio, look, he keep his day, or he
• 55:42
Speaker 4: shall pay for this.
• 55:44
Speaker 3: Mary Well remembered. I reasoned with a Frenchman yesterday, who
• 55:47
Speaker 3: told me in the narrow seas that part the French
• 55:49
Speaker 3: and English there miscarried a vessel of our country richly fraught.
• 55:54
Speaker 3: I thought upon Antonio when he told me, and wished
• 55:56
Speaker 3: in silence that it were not his.
• 55:58
Speaker 4: You were best to tell Antonio what you hear. Yet
• 56:01
Speaker 4: do not suddenly, for it may grieve him.
• 56:03
Speaker 3: A kinder gentleman treads not the earth. I saw Bassanio
• 56:07
Speaker 3: and Antonio part. Bassanio told him he would make some
• 56:10
Speaker 3: speed of his return. He answered, do not so slubber,
• 56:14
Speaker 3: not business for my sake, Bassanio, but stay the very
• 56:17
Speaker 3: riping of the time, and for the Jew's bond which
• 56:20
Speaker 3: he half of me. Let it not enter in your
• 56:22
Speaker 3: mind of love. Be merry, and employ your chiefest thoughts
• 56:26
Speaker 3: to courtship and such fair ostense of love as shall
• 56:29
Speaker 3: conveniently become you there and even there, his eye being big,
• 56:33
Speaker 3: with tears turning his face, he put his hand behind him,
• 56:37
Speaker 3: and with affection, wondrous sensible, he wrung Bassanio's hand, and
• 56:41
  Speaker 3: so they parted.
• 56:42
Speaker 4: I think he only loves the world for him. I
• 56:45
Speaker 4: pray thee let us go and find him out and
• 56:47
Speaker 4: quicken his embraced heaviness with some delight or other.
• 56:50
Speaker 8: Do we so excient?
• 56:54
Speaker 1: Scene nine Belmont, a room in Porsche's house, enter Nerissa
• 57:01
  Speaker 1: with a servitor.
• 57:03
Speaker 11: Quick, quick, I pray thee draw the curtain straight. The
• 57:06
Speaker 11: Prince of Ragon attain his oath and comes to his election.
• 57:09
Speaker 1: Presently, flourish of coronets enter the Prince of Aragon, Porsche
• 57:15
  Speaker 1: and their trains.
• 57:17
Speaker 10: Behold, there stand the casket's noble Prince. If you choose
• 57:21
Speaker 10: that wherein I am contained straight, shall our nuptial rites
• 57:24
Speaker 10: be solemnized. But if you fail without more speech, my lord,
• 57:29
Speaker 10: you must be gone from hence immediately.
• 57:31
Speaker 9: I am enjoined by oath to observe three things. First,
• 57:38
Speaker 9: never to unfold to any one which casket twas I chose. Next,
• 57:45
Speaker 9: if I fail of the right casket, never in my
• 57:49
Speaker 9: life to woo a maid in way of marriage. Lastly,
• 57:54
Speaker 9: if I do fail in fortune of my choice, immediately
• 57:58
Speaker 9: to leave you and be gone.
• 58:00
Speaker 10: To these injunctions. Every one doth swear that comes to
• 58:03
Speaker 10: hazard for my worthless self.
• 58:06
Speaker 9: And so have I addressed me fortune now to my
• 58:09
Speaker 9: heart's hope, gold, silver and base lead. Who chooseth me
• 58:22
Speaker 9: must give an hazard all he have you shall look fairer.
• 58:28
Speaker 9: Ere I give or hazard? What says the golden chest
• 58:31
Speaker 9: ha Let me see who chooseth me shall gain what
• 58:36
Speaker 9: many men desire, What many men desire, that many may
• 58:43
Speaker 9: be meant by the full multitude that choose by show
• 58:47
Speaker 9: not learning more than the fond ey doth teach, which
• 58:49
Speaker 9: prize not to the interior, but like the martlet builds
• 58:54
Speaker 9: in the weather on the outward war, even in the
• 58:57
Speaker 9: force and road of casualty. I will not choose what
• 59:01
Speaker 9: many men desire, because I will not jump with common
• 59:05
Speaker 9: spirits and rank me with the barbarous multitudes. Where then,
• 59:10
Speaker 9: to thee thou silver treasure house, tell me once more
• 59:15
Speaker 9: what title thou dost bear, who chooseth me shall get
• 59:20
Speaker 9: as much as he deserves. And well said too, For
• 59:27
Speaker 9: who shall go about to cousin fortune and be honorable
• 59:29
Speaker 9: without the stamp of merit? Let none presume to wear
• 59:35
Speaker 9: an undeserved dignity? Oh that his states, degrees, and offices
• 59:42
Speaker 9: were not derived corruptly, and that clear honor were purchased
• 59:46
Speaker 9: by the merit of the wearer. How many then should
• 59:51
Speaker 9: cover that stand bear, How many be commanded that command?
• 59:57
Speaker 9: How much low peasantry would then be gleamed from the
• 1:00:01
Speaker 9: true seed of honor, And how much honor picked from
• 1:00:05
Speaker 9: the chaff and ruin of the times to be new varnished. Well,
• 1:00:10
Speaker 9: but to my choice, who chooseth me shall get as
• 1:00:15
Speaker 9: much as he deserves. I will assume desert. Give me
• 1:00:22
Speaker 9: a key for this, and instantly unlock my fortunes.
• 1:00:27
Speaker 1: Here he opens the silver casket.
• 1:00:30
Speaker 10: Too long a pause for that which you find there?
• 1:00:33
  Speaker 8: What's here.
• 1:00:36
Speaker 9: The portrait of a blinking idiot presenting me a schedule?
• 1:00:43
Speaker 9: I will read it. How much unlike art thou to Porsche,
• 1:00:47
Speaker 9: how much unlike my hopes and my deservings, who chooseth
• 1:00:52
Speaker 9: me shall have as much as he deserves? Did I
• 1:00:55
Speaker 9: deserve no more than a fool's head? Is that my prize?
• 1:01:00
Speaker 9: My desserts no better to.
• 1:01:01
Speaker 10: Offend and judge are distinct offices and of opposed natures.
• 1:01:06
Speaker 9: What is here the fire? Seven times tried this, seven
• 1:01:16
Speaker 9: times tried that? Judgment? Is that did never choose a miss?
• 1:01:23
Speaker 9: Some there be that shadows kiss such have but a
• 1:01:27
Speaker 9: shadow's bliss. There be fools alive. I wiss silver door,
• 1:01:34
Speaker 9: and so was this? Take what wife you will to bed?
• 1:01:40
Speaker 9: I will ever be your head, so begone you are
• 1:01:46
Speaker 9: sped still more fool I shall appear by the time
• 1:01:55
Speaker 9: I linger here with one fool's head, I came to woo.
• 1:02:01
Speaker 9: I go away with two sweet adieu. I'll keep my
• 1:02:06
Speaker 9: oath patiently to bear my roath exit Arragon with his train.
• 1:02:14
Speaker 10: Thus hath the candle singed the moth. Oh, these deliberate fools,
• 1:02:20
Speaker 10: when they do choose, they have the wisdom by their
• 1:02:22
  Speaker 10: wit to lose.
• 1:02:24
Speaker 11: The ancient saying is no heresy. Hanging and wiving goes
• 1:02:27
  Speaker 11: by destiny.
• 1:02:28
Speaker 10: Come draw the curtain.
• 1:02:29
Speaker 1: Narissa, enter a servant.
• 1:02:32
Speaker 12: Where is my lady here?
• 1:02:34
Speaker 10: What would my lord madam?
• 1:02:36
Speaker 12: There is alighted at your gait, A young Venetian one
• 1:02:38
Speaker 12: that comes before to signify the approaching of his lord,
• 1:02:41
Speaker 12: from whom he bringeth sensible regreats to wit, besides commends
• 1:02:46
Speaker 12: and courteous breath, gifts of rich value. Yet I have
• 1:02:50
Speaker 12: not seen so likely an ambassador of love. A day
• 1:02:53
Speaker 12: in April never came so sweet to show how costly
• 1:02:56
Speaker 12: summer was at hand. As this forespurer comes before his lord.
• 1:03:01
Speaker 10: No more I pray THEE. I am half afeared. Thou
• 1:03:03
Speaker 10: wilt say, Anon, he is some kin to THEE. Thou
• 1:03:06
Speaker 10: spent such high day wit in praising him. Come come, Nerissa,
• 1:03:11
Speaker 10: for I long to see quick Cupid's posts. That comes
• 1:03:14
Speaker 10: so mannerly, Bassenio, Lord love, if thy will it be excellent?
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: End of Act two, Act three, Scene one, venice a street,
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: enter Salanio and Sala Grino.
• 1:03:33
Speaker 4: Now what news on the rialto.
• 1:03:35
Speaker 3: Why yet it lives there unchecked? That Antonio hath a
• 1:03:38
Speaker 3: ship of rich lading wrecked on the narrow seas the
• 1:03:41
Speaker 3: good ones I think they call the place a very
• 1:03:44
Speaker 3: dangerous flat and fatal, where the carcasses of many a
• 1:03:47
Speaker 3: tall ship lie buried. As they say, if my gossip
• 1:03:50
Speaker 3: report be an honest woman of her word.
• 1:03:52
Speaker 4: I would she were as lying a gossip in that
• 1:03:55
Speaker 4: as ever napped Ginger or made her neighbors believe she
• 1:03:57
Speaker 4: wept for the death of the third husband. But it
• 1:04:00
Speaker 4: is true, without any slips of perlxity or crossing the
• 1:04:03
Speaker 4: plain highway of talk, that the good Antonio, the honest Antonio, Oh,
• 1:04:08
Speaker 4: that I had a title good enough to keep his
• 1:04:10
  Speaker 4: name company.
• 1:04:11
Speaker 3: Come the full stop?
• 1:04:13
Speaker 4: Ha, what says now why the end is he hath
• 1:04:16
  Speaker 4: lost a ship?
• 1:04:17
Speaker 3: I would it might prove the end of his losses.
• 1:04:20
Speaker 4: Let me say, amen, betimes, lest the devil cross my prayer,
• 1:04:23
Speaker 4: for here he comes in the likeness of a jew enter.
• 1:04:27
Speaker 8: Shylock, you knew none so well, none so well as
• 1:04:32
Speaker 8: you of my daughter's flight.
• 1:04:34
Speaker 3: That's certain. I, for my part knew the tailor that
• 1:04:36
Speaker 3: made the wing she flew with.
• 1:04:38
Speaker 4: All, And Shylock, for his own part, knew the bird
• 1:04:41
Speaker 4: was fledged. And then it is the complexion of them
• 1:04:43
Speaker 4: all to leave the dam.
• 1:04:45
Speaker 8: She is damned for it.
• 1:04:47
Speaker 3: That's certain. If the devil may be her judge my.
• 1:04:50
Speaker 8: Own a flesh and bliged rebel.
• 1:04:53
Speaker 4: Out upon it. Old Carrion rebels it.
• 1:04:56
Speaker 8: At these years, I say, my daughter is my f
• 1:05:00
Speaker 8: flesh and my blood.
• 1:05:01
Speaker 3: There is more difference between thy flesh and hers than
• 1:05:04
Speaker 3: between jet and ivory, more between your bloods than there
• 1:05:07
Speaker 3: is between red wine and rhenish. But tell us, do
• 1:05:11
Speaker 3: you hear whether Antonio have had any loss at sea
• 1:05:13
  Speaker 3: or no?
• 1:05:14
Speaker 8: There? I have another bad match, a bankrupt, a prodigal
• 1:05:18
Speaker 8: who dares scarce show his head on rialto a beggar
• 1:05:22
Speaker 8: that used to come so smug upon the mart Let
• 1:05:25
Speaker 8: him look to his bond. He was wont to call
• 1:05:29
Speaker 8: me user. Let him look to his bond. He was
• 1:05:33
Speaker 8: wont to lend money for a Christian courtesy. Let him
• 1:05:37
Speaker 8: look to his bond.
• 1:05:39
Speaker 3: Why I am sure if he forfeit, thou wilt not
• 1:05:41
Speaker 3: take his flesh? What's that good for to.
• 1:05:44
Speaker 8: Bait fish withal? If it will feed nothing else, it
• 1:05:48
Speaker 8: will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me and hindered
• 1:05:54
Speaker 8: me half a million, laughed at my losses, marked at
• 1:05:59
Speaker 8: my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends.
• 1:06:04
Speaker 8: He died mine enemies. And what is reason? I am
• 1:06:09
Speaker 8: a Jew? Hath not a jew? Eyes? Hath not a Jew? Hands? Organs, dimensions, senses, affections,
• 1:06:20
Speaker 8: passions fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons,
• 1:06:25
Speaker 8: subject to the same diseases, keeled by the same means,
• 1:06:30
Speaker 8: warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as
• 1:06:32
Speaker 8: a Christian is. If you prick us, do we not bleed?
• 1:06:39
Speaker 8: If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you
• 1:06:42
Speaker 8: poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us,
• 1:06:47
Speaker 8: shall we not revenge? If we are like you in
• 1:06:51
Speaker 8: the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a
• 1:06:54
Speaker 8: Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility revenge? If
• 1:06:59
Speaker 8: a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be?
• 1:07:02
Speaker 8: By Christian example, why revenge the villainy you teach me.
• 1:07:08
Speaker 8: I will execute, and it shall go hard, but I
• 1:07:13
Speaker 8: will better the instruction.
• 1:07:16
  Speaker 1: Enter a servant, a gentleman.
• 1:07:19
Speaker 12: My master Antonio is at his house and desires to
• 1:07:22
  Speaker 12: speak with you.
• 1:07:23
Speaker 3: Both we have been up and down to seek him.
• 1:07:26
  Speaker 1: Enter Tibble.
• 1:07:27
Speaker 4: Here comes another of the tribe. A third cannot be
• 1:07:30
Speaker 4: matched unless the devil himself turned you.
• 1:07:33
Speaker 1: Excent Salanio, Salarino, and servant.
• 1:07:38
Speaker 8: How now, Tibble? What news from Genoa? Hast thou found
• 1:07:41
  Speaker 8: my daughter?
• 1:07:43
Speaker 17: I often came where I did hear of her, but
• 1:07:46
  Speaker 17: cannot find her.
• 1:07:48
Speaker 8: Why there there ver a diamond gone? Cost me two
• 1:07:57
Speaker 8: thousand ducats in Frankfort. The curse never fell upon our
• 1:08:01
Speaker 8: nation till now. I never felt it till now two
• 1:08:08
Speaker 8: thousand ducats in that and other precious, precious jewels. I
• 1:08:13
Speaker 8: would my daughter were dead at my foot, and the
• 1:08:16
Speaker 8: jewels in her ear, which she would hurst at my foot,
• 1:08:19
Speaker 8: in the duckets in her coffin, No news of them?
• 1:08:23
Speaker 8: Why so? And I know not what's spent in the search.
• 1:08:28
Speaker 8: Why thou loss upon loss? The thief gone with so
• 1:08:32
Speaker 8: much and so much to find the thief, and no satisfaction,
• 1:08:37
Speaker 8: no revenge you, no ill luck stirring, but what lights
• 1:08:41
Speaker 8: on my shoulders? No size but of my breathing, No
• 1:08:45
Speaker 8: tears but of my shedding.
• 1:08:47
Speaker 17: Yes, other men have ill luck too, Antonio, As I
• 1:08:53
  Speaker 17: heard in Genoa.
• 1:08:54
Speaker 8: What what what ill luck? Ill luck?
• 1:08:58
Speaker 17: Hath an argysy cast way coming from triplush?
• 1:09:02
Speaker 8: I thank God, I thank God. Is it true? Is
• 1:09:06
  Speaker 8: it true?
• 1:09:07
Speaker 17: I spoke with some of the sailors that escaped the wreck.
• 1:09:10
Speaker 8: God, I thank thee good triple good news, good news.
• 1:09:17
  Speaker 8: Where in Genoa?
• 1:09:18
Speaker 17: Your daughter spent in Genoa? As I heard one night,
• 1:09:24
  Speaker 17: four score ducats.
• 1:09:26
Speaker 8: Thou sticks a dagger in me. I shall never see
• 1:09:30
Speaker 8: my gold again. Four score ducats. At the sitting for
• 1:09:35
  Speaker 8: score buckets.
• 1:09:36
Speaker 17: There came divers of Antonio's creditors to my company, to
• 1:09:40
Speaker 17: Venice that swear he cannot choose but break.
• 1:09:45
Speaker 8: I am very glad of it. I'll plague him, I'll
• 1:09:48
Speaker 8: torture him. I am glad of it.
• 1:09:51
Speaker 17: One of them showed me a ring that he had
• 1:09:53
Speaker 17: of your daughter for a monkey.
• 1:09:56
Speaker 8: Oh out upon her, Thou taught be tibble. It was
• 1:10:02
Speaker 8: my turquoise. I had it of Leah when I was
• 1:10:06
Speaker 8: a bachelor. I would not have given it for a
• 1:10:10
  Speaker 8: wilderness of monkeys.
• 1:10:12
Speaker 17: But Antonio is certainly m borrow.
• 1:10:16
Speaker 8: Nay, that's true, that's very true. Go tible Fimian officer
• 1:10:23
Speaker 8: bespeak him a fortnight before. I will have the heart
• 1:10:26
Speaker 8: of him if he forfeit, For were he out of venice,
• 1:10:29
Speaker 8: I can make but merchandise, I will go tibble and
• 1:10:32
Speaker 8: meet me at our synagogue. Go good tibble at our synagogue.
• 1:10:35
Speaker 1: Table Excient scene two Belmont, A room in Porsche's house.
• 1:10:45
Speaker 1: Enter Bassango, Porsche, Gratiano, Nearissa and attendants.
• 1:10:51
Speaker 10: I pray you, Terry, pause a day or two before
• 1:10:55
Speaker 10: you hazard for in choosing wrong, I lose your company.
• 1:10:59
Speaker 10: Therefore forbear awhile there's something tells me, but it is
• 1:11:04
Speaker 10: not love. I would not lose you, and you know yourself.
• 1:11:08
Speaker 10: Hate counsels not in such a quality. But lest you
• 1:11:11
Speaker 10: should not understand me well, and yet a maiden hath
• 1:11:15
Speaker 10: no tongue, but thought I would detain you here some
• 1:11:18
Speaker 10: month or two before you venture for me. I could
• 1:11:21
Speaker 10: teach you how to choose right. But then I am forsworn,
• 1:11:25
Speaker 10: so will I never be? So may you miss me?
• 1:11:29
Speaker 10: But if you do, you'll make me wish a sin
• 1:11:31
Speaker 10: that I had been forsworn. Beshrew your eyes they have
• 1:11:35
Speaker 10: o'erlooked me and divided me. One half of me is yours,
• 1:11:40
Speaker 10: the other half yours mine own, I would say, But
• 1:11:43
Speaker 10: if mine, then yours, and so all yours. Oh, these
• 1:11:47
Speaker 10: naughty times puts bars between the owners and their rights.
• 1:11:51
Speaker 10: And so though yours not yours, prove it. So let
• 1:11:57
Speaker 10: fortune go to hell for it not I I speak
• 1:12:00
Speaker 10: too long, But tis topease the time to eke it,
• 1:12:03
Speaker 10: and to draw it out in length to stay you
• 1:12:05
  Speaker 10: from election.
• 1:12:07
Speaker 5: Let me choose, for as I am, I live upon
• 1:12:09
  Speaker 5: the rack.
• 1:12:10
Speaker 10: Upon the rack, basanio, Then confess what treason there is
• 1:12:14
Speaker 10: mingled with your love?
• 1:12:16
Speaker 5: None but that ugly treason of mistrust, which makes me
• 1:12:19
Speaker 5: fear the enjoying of my love. There may as well
• 1:12:22
Speaker 5: be amity in life between snow and fire as treason
• 1:12:26
  Speaker 5: and my love.
• 1:12:27
Speaker 10: Aye, but I fear you speak upon the rack where
• 1:12:30
  Speaker 10: men enforce it.
• 1:12:31
Speaker 5: Do speak anything, promise me life and not confess the truth.
• 1:12:36
Speaker 10: Well, then confess and live.
• 1:12:38
Speaker 5: Confess and love had been the very sum of my confession. Oh,
• 1:12:43
Speaker 5: happy torment. When my torturer doth teach me answers for deliverance.
• 1:12:48
Speaker 5: But let me to my fortune and the caskets away.
• 1:12:52
Speaker 10: Then I am locked in one of them. If you
• 1:12:56
Speaker 10: do love me, you will find me out, And the
• 1:13:00
Speaker 10: rest stand all aloof. Let music sound while he doth
• 1:13:04
Speaker 10: make his choice. Then if he lose, he makes a
• 1:13:07
Speaker 10: swan like end, fading in music, that the comparison may
• 1:13:11
Speaker 10: stand more proper. My eye shall be the stream and
• 1:13:15
Speaker 10: watery death bed for him he may win. And what
• 1:13:19
  Speaker 10: is music?
• 1:13:19
  Speaker 1: Then?
• 1:13:20
Speaker 10: Then music is even as the flourish when true subjects
• 1:13:24
Speaker 10: bow to a new crowned monarch. Such it is as
• 1:13:28
Speaker 10: are those dulcet sounds in break of day that creep
• 1:13:31
Speaker 10: into the dreaming bridegroom's ear and summon him to marriage.
• 1:13:35
Speaker 10: Now he goes with no less presence, but with much
• 1:13:39
Speaker 10: more love than young Alcides, when he did redeem the
• 1:13:42
Speaker 10: virgin tribute paid by howling Troy to the sea monster.
• 1:13:46
Speaker 10: I stand for sacrifice. The rest aloof are the Dardanian
• 1:13:51
Speaker 10: wives with bleared visages come forth to view the issue
• 1:13:54
Speaker 10: of the exploit. Go Hercules live thou, I live with
• 1:14:01
Speaker 10: much much more dismay I view the fight than thou.
• 1:14:04
Speaker 1: That makes the fray a song, while the saniel comments
• 1:14:09
Speaker 1: on the caskets to himself.
• 1:14:12
Speaker 16: Tell me he where is fancy bread.
• 1:14:17
Speaker 18: Or in the heart or in the head?
• 1:14:23
Speaker 8: Ha be he gone?
• 1:14:25
  Speaker 16: How nois shared?
• 1:14:29
  Speaker 8: Reply?
• 1:14:31
  Speaker 5: Reply?
• 1:14:34
Speaker 18: It is engendered in the eyes with gayhee's eking fed
• 1:14:41
  Speaker 18: and fancy died.
• 1:14:45
Speaker 11: In the great or wear it las.
• 1:14:52
Speaker 18: Lead us all ring fans season. I'll begin, dan, don be, day.
• 1:15:08
  Speaker 8: Don.
• 1:15:10
Speaker 5: Be, so may the outward shows be least themselves. The
• 1:15:19
Speaker 5: world is still deceived with ornament in law? What plea
• 1:15:24
Speaker 5: so tainted and corrupt, but being seasoned with a gracious
• 1:15:27
Speaker 5: voice obscures the show of evil in religion? What damned error?
• 1:15:33
Speaker 5: But some sober brow will bless it and approve it
• 1:15:36
Speaker 5: with a text hiding the grossness with fair ornament. There
• 1:15:42
Speaker 5: is no vice so simple, but assume some mark of
• 1:15:45
Speaker 5: virtue on his outward parts. How many cowards whose hearts
• 1:15:50
Speaker 5: are all as false as stairs of sand wear, yet
• 1:15:53
Speaker 5: upon their chins the beards of Hercules and frowning Mars,
• 1:15:58
Speaker 5: who inward searched have livers white as milk. And these
• 1:16:02
Speaker 5: assume but Valor's excrement to render them redoubted. Look on beauty,
• 1:16:08
Speaker 5: and you shall see tis purchased by the weight, which
• 1:16:11
Speaker 5: therein works a miracle in nature, making them lightest that
• 1:16:15
Speaker 5: wear most of it. So were those crispid, snaky golden
• 1:16:20
Speaker 5: locks which make such wanton gambols with the wind upon
• 1:16:25
Speaker 5: supposed fairness, often known to be the dowry of a
• 1:16:28
Speaker 5: second head, the skull that bred them in the suppulcher.
• 1:16:33
Speaker 5: Thus ornament is but the guiled shore to a most
• 1:16:35
Speaker 5: dangerous sea, the beauteous scarf, veiling an Indian beauty, in
• 1:16:42
Speaker 5: a word, the seeming truth which cunning times put on
• 1:16:45
Speaker 5: to entrap the wisest. Therefore, thou gaudy gold hard food
• 1:16:50
Speaker 5: for midas, I will none of thee, nor none of
• 1:16:55
Speaker 5: thee thou pale and common drudge tween man and man.
• 1:17:00
Speaker 5: But thou thou meager lad, which rather threatenest than dost
• 1:17:05
Speaker 5: promise aught. Thy plainness moves me more than eloquence. And
• 1:17:12
Speaker 5: here choose I joy be the consequence.
• 1:17:17
Speaker 10: Aside, how all the other passions fleet to air as
• 1:17:22
Speaker 10: doubtful thoughts and rash embrace, despair and shuddering fear and
• 1:17:26
Speaker 10: green eyed jealousy. O love be moderate, allay thy ecstasy
• 1:17:33
Speaker 10: in measure, rain thy joy scant the success I feel
• 1:17:37
Speaker 10: too much thy blessing make it less for fear I surfeit?
• 1:17:41
Speaker 1: What find I hear opening thee leaden casket?
• 1:17:46
Speaker 5: Fair Porsha's counterfeit? What Demigod hath come so near creation?
• 1:17:53
Speaker 5: Move these eyes? Or whether riding on the balls of mind,
• 1:17:57
Speaker 5: seem they in motion? Here are severed lips parted with
• 1:18:03
Speaker 5: sugar breath, so sweet a bar should sunder such sweet friends.
• 1:18:08
Speaker 5: Here in her hairs the painter plays the spider, and
• 1:18:11
Speaker 5: hath woven a golden mesh to entrap the hearts of
• 1:18:14
Speaker 5: men faster than gnats in cobwebs. But her eyes, how
• 1:18:20
Speaker 5: could he see to do them? Having made one, methinks
• 1:18:22
Speaker 5: it should have powered to steal both his and leave
• 1:18:25
Speaker 5: itself unfurnished. Yet look how far the substance of my
• 1:18:30
Speaker 5: praise doth wrong this shadow in underprizing it. So far
• 1:18:34
Speaker 5: this shadow doth limp behind the substance. Here is the scroll,
• 1:18:42
Speaker 5: the continent and summary of my fortune. You that choose
• 1:18:46
Speaker 5: not by the view chance as fairer, and choose as true.
• 1:18:52
Speaker 5: Since this fortune falls to you, be content and seek
• 1:18:56
Speaker 5: no new If you be well pleased with this, and
• 1:19:00
Speaker 5: hold your fortune for your bliss, turn to where your
• 1:19:05
Speaker 5: lady is, and claim her with a loving kiss, a
• 1:19:10
Speaker 5: gentle scroll, fair lady, by your leave, kissing her by
• 1:19:16
Speaker 5: come by note, to give and to receive, like one
• 1:19:20
Speaker 5: of two contending in a prize that things he hath
• 1:19:24
Speaker 5: done well in people's eyes, hearing applause and universal shout Gideon,
• 1:19:29
Speaker 5: spirit still gazing in a doubt whether these pearls of
• 1:19:32
Speaker 5: praise be his or no. So thrice, fair lady, stand
• 1:19:38
Speaker 5: I even so as doubtful whether what I see be true,
• 1:19:43
Speaker 5: until confirmed, signed, ratified by you.
• 1:19:48
Speaker 10: You see me, Lord Basania, where I stand such as
• 1:19:52
Speaker 10: I am. Though for myself alone I would not be
• 1:19:55
Speaker 10: ambitious in my wish to wish myself much better. Yet
• 1:19:59
Speaker 10: for you I would be trebled twenty times myself a
• 1:20:02
Speaker 10: thousand times more fair, ten thousand times more rich that
• 1:20:07
Speaker 10: only to stand high in your account. I might, in virtues, beauties, livings,
• 1:20:12
Speaker 10: friends exceed account. But the full sum of me is
• 1:20:17
Speaker 10: some of something which to term engross is an unlessened girl, unschooled,
• 1:20:23
Speaker 10: unpracticed happy in this. She is not yet so old,
• 1:20:27
Speaker 10: but she may learn happier than this. She is not
• 1:20:30
Speaker 10: bred so dull, but she can learn happiest of all
• 1:20:34
Speaker 10: is that her gentle spirit commits itself to yours, to
• 1:20:37
Speaker 10: be directed as from her lord, her governor, her king myself.
• 1:20:44
Speaker 10: And what is mine to you and yours is now converted.
• 1:20:48
Speaker 10: But now I was the lord of this fair mansion,
• 1:20:51
Speaker 10: master of my servants, queen or myself, and even now,
• 1:20:56
Speaker 10: but now this house, these servants, and this say myself
• 1:21:01
Speaker 10: are yours, My lords. I give them with this ring,
• 1:21:06
Speaker 10: which when you part from, lose or give away, let
• 1:21:09
Speaker 10: it presage the ruin of your love, and be my
• 1:21:12
Speaker 10: vantage to exclaim on you.
• 1:21:14
Speaker 5: Madam, you've bereft me of all words. Only my blood
• 1:21:19
Speaker 5: speaks to you in my veins. And there is such
• 1:21:21
Speaker 5: confusion in my powers as after some oration fairly spoke
• 1:21:25
Speaker 5: by a beloved prince. There doth appear among the buzzing,
• 1:21:28
Speaker 5: pleased multitude, where every something being blunt together turns to
• 1:21:34
Speaker 5: a wild of nothing save of joy expressed and not expressed.
• 1:21:40
Speaker 5: But when this ring parts from this finger, then parts
• 1:21:44
Speaker 5: life from hence, oh, then be bold to say, Bassanio's dead,
• 1:21:51
Speaker 5: My lord and lady.
• 1:21:51
Speaker 11: It is now our time that have stood by, and
• 1:21:53
Speaker 11: see I wish this prosper to cry good joy, good joy,
• 1:21:56
Speaker 11: my lord and lady.
• 1:21:57
Speaker 7: My Lord Basonio and my lady, I wish you all
• 1:22:02
Speaker 7: the joy that you can wish for I am sure
• 1:22:04
Speaker 7: that you can wish none from me. And when your
• 1:22:07
Speaker 7: honors mean to solemnize the bargain of your faith, I
• 1:22:11
Speaker 7: do beseech you even at that time I may be
• 1:22:14
  Speaker 7: married too, with.
• 1:22:15
Speaker 5: All my heart, so thou canst get a wife.
• 1:22:18
Speaker 7: I thank your lordship you have got me one. My eyes,
• 1:22:21
Speaker 7: my lord, can look as swift as yours. You saw
• 1:22:25
Speaker 7: the mistress. I beheld the maid you loved. I loved
• 1:22:30
Speaker 7: for intermission. No more pertains to me, my lord than you.
• 1:22:34
Speaker 7: Your fortune stood upon the caskets there, and so did
• 1:22:38
Speaker 7: mine too, as the matter falls. For wooing here until
• 1:22:42
Speaker 7: I sweat again, and swearing till my very roof was
• 1:22:45
Speaker 7: dry with oaths of love. At last, if promised last,
• 1:22:49
Speaker 7: I got a promise of this fair one here to
• 1:22:52
Speaker 7: have her love, provided that your fortune achieved her mistress?
• 1:22:56
  Speaker 16: Is this true?
• 1:22:57
Speaker 11: Nrissa madam? It is so please you?
• 1:23:01
Speaker 5: And do you Graciano mean good faith?
• 1:23:03
Speaker 7: Yes? Faith, my lord.
• 1:23:05
Speaker 5: Our feasts shall be much honored in your marriage.
• 1:23:08
Speaker 7: We'll play with them. The first boy for a thousand
• 1:23:12
Speaker 7: ducats what stake down?
• 1:23:14
  Speaker 8: No, we shall.
• 1:23:15
Speaker 7: Ne'er win at that sport and stake down. But who
• 1:23:19
Speaker 7: comes here? Lorenzo and his infidel What and my old
• 1:23:23
  Speaker 7: Venetian friend Solonio.
• 1:23:25
Speaker 1: Enter Lorenzo, Jessica and Selanio.
• 1:23:29
Speaker 5: Lorenzo and Solanio welcome hither. If that the youth of
• 1:23:33
Speaker 5: my new interest here have power to bid you welcome,
• 1:23:37
Speaker 5: by your leave, I bid my very friends and countrymans,
• 1:23:40
Speaker 5: we poor shoe welcome.
• 1:23:41
Speaker 10: So do I, my lord. They are entirely welcome.
• 1:23:45
Speaker 6: I thank your honor for my part, my Lord. My
• 1:23:48
Speaker 6: purpose was not to have seen you here, but meeting
• 1:23:52
Speaker 6: with Solanio, by the way he did entreat me past
• 1:23:56
Speaker 6: all saying nay to come with him along?
• 1:23:59
Speaker 4: I did, my Lord, and I have reason for it.
• 1:24:02
Speaker 4: Signor Antonio commends him to you.
• 1:24:05
Speaker 1: Gives Barsanio a letter.
• 1:24:08
Speaker 5: Ere I ope his letter. I pray you tell me
• 1:24:10
Speaker 5: how my good friend doth.
• 1:24:12
Speaker 4: Not sick, my lord, unless it be in mind, nor well,
• 1:24:15
Speaker 4: unless in mind his letter there will show you his estate.
• 1:24:18
Speaker 7: Nourissa cheer Yon Stranger, bid her welcome your hands. Solanio.
• 1:24:23
Speaker 7: What's the news from Venice? How doth that royal merchant
• 1:24:27
Speaker 7: good Antonio, I know he will be glad of our success.
• 1:24:31
Speaker 7: We are the Jason's. We have won the fleece.
• 1:24:33
Speaker 4: I would you had won the fleece that he hath lost.
• 1:24:36
Speaker 10: There are some shrewd contents in yon same paper that
• 1:24:40
Speaker 10: steal the color from Bassanio's cheek, some dear friend dead else,
• 1:24:45
Speaker 10: nothing in the world could turn so much the constitution
• 1:24:48
Speaker 10: of any constant man.
• 1:24:49
Speaker 11: What worse and worse?
• 1:24:51
Speaker 10: With leave Bissanio, I am half yourself, and I must
• 1:24:55
Speaker 10: freely have the half of anything that this same paper
• 1:24:58
  Speaker 10: brings you.
• 1:24:59
Speaker 5: Oh sweet Portia, here are a few of the unpleasantest
• 1:25:03
Speaker 5: words that ever blotted paper. Gentle lady, when I did
• 1:25:08
Speaker 5: first impart my love to you, I freely told you
• 1:25:11
Speaker 5: all the wealth I had ran in my veins. I
• 1:25:14
Speaker 5: was a gentleman, and then I told you true. And yet,
• 1:25:18
Speaker 5: dear lady, rating myself at nothing, you shall see how
• 1:25:22
Speaker 5: much I was a braggart. When I told you my
• 1:25:25
Speaker 5: state was nothing, I should then have told you that
• 1:25:28
Speaker 5: I was worse than nothing. For indeed, I've engaged myself
• 1:25:32
Speaker 5: to a dear friend, engaged my friend to his mere enemy,
• 1:25:36
Speaker 5: to feed my means. Here is a letter lady, the
• 1:25:41
Speaker 5: paper as the body of my friend, and every word
• 1:25:44
Speaker 5: in it a gaping wound issuing life blood. But is
• 1:25:47
Speaker 5: it true, Scelario, have all his ventures failed?
• 1:25:52
  Speaker 7: What?
• 1:25:53
Speaker 5: Not one hit from Tripolis, from Mexico and England, from Lisbon,
• 1:25:59
Speaker 5: Barbary and India, And not one vessel scaped the dreadful
• 1:26:04
Speaker 5: touch of merchant marring Rocks, Not one, my Lord.
• 1:26:08
Speaker 4: Besides, it should appear that if he had the present
• 1:26:10
Speaker 4: money to discharge the Jew, he would not take it.
• 1:26:13
Speaker 4: Never did I know a creature that did bear the
• 1:26:15
Speaker 4: shape of man so keen and greedy to confound a
• 1:26:19
Speaker 4: man He plies the Duke at morning and at night,
• 1:26:22
Speaker 4: and doth impeach the freedom of the state if they
• 1:26:24
Speaker 4: deny him justice. Twenty merchants of the Duke himself and
• 1:26:28
Speaker 4: the Magnificoce of greatest Port have all persuaded with him,
• 1:26:31
Speaker 4: but none can drive him from the envious plea of
• 1:26:33
Speaker 4: forfeiture of justice and his bond.
• 1:26:36
Speaker 16: When I was with him, I have heard him swear
• 1:26:39
Speaker 16: to tibble and to choose his countrymen, that he would
• 1:26:42
Speaker 16: rather have Antonio's flesh than twenty times the value of
• 1:26:46
Speaker 16: the sum that he did owe him, and I know,
• 1:26:49
Speaker 16: my Lord, if law, authority and power deny not, it
• 1:26:54
Speaker 16: will go hard with poor Antonio.
• 1:26:56
Speaker 19: Is it your dear friend that is thus in trouble,
• 1:26:59
Speaker 19: the dearest friend to me, the kindest man, the best
• 1:27:02
Speaker 19: conditioned and unwearied spirit in doing courtesies, and one in
• 1:27:07
Speaker 19: whom the ancient Roman honor more appears than any that
• 1:27:10
Speaker 19: draws breath in Italy?
• 1:27:11
Speaker 5: What summ o's he the jew for me three thousand ducats?
• 1:27:15
Speaker 10: What no more? Pay him six thousand, and to face
• 1:27:19
Speaker 10: the bond double six thousand, and then trouble that before
• 1:27:23
Speaker 10: a friend of this description shall lose a hair through
• 1:27:25

Speaker 8: is the fool that lent out money. Gratis Jailah look

  Speaker 8: to him.
• 1:29:04
Speaker 2: Hear me, yet, good, Shylac, I'll have my bond.
• 1:29:08
Speaker 8: Speak not against my bond. I have sworn an oath
• 1:29:11
Speaker 8: that I will have my bond. Thou call'st me dog

Speaker 8: but were my fangs the Duke shall grant me justice.
• 1:29:23
Speaker 8: I do wonder thou, naughty Jaila, that thou art so

Speaker 8: I'll have no speaking. I will have my bond.

Speaker 2: He seeks my life his reason well, I know I
• 1:30:04
Speaker 2: oft delivered from his forfeitures many that have at times
• 1:30:07
Speaker 2: made moan to me. Therefore he hates me.
• 1:30:10
Speaker 3: I am sure the Duke will never grant this forfeiture
• 1:30:13
  Speaker 3: to hold.
• 1:30:14
Speaker 2: The Duke cannot deny the course of law for the
• 1:30:17
Speaker 2: commodity that strangers have with us in venice. If it
• 1:30:20
Speaker 2: be denied to much impeach the justice of the state,
• 1:30:25
Speaker 2: Since that the trade and profit of the city consisteth
• 1:30:28
Speaker 2: of all nations. Therefore go these griefs and losses have
• 1:30:34
Speaker 2: so baited me that I shall hardly spare a pound
• 1:30:37
Speaker 2: of flesh tomorrow to my bloody creditor.
• 1:30:41
  Speaker 8: Well Gowler On.

Speaker 1: Scene four Belmont, a room in Porsche's house. Enter Portia, Nerisa, Lorenzo,
• 1:31:03
  Speaker 1: Jessica and Balthasar.
• 1:31:05
Speaker 6: Madam. Although I speak it in your presence, you have
• 1:31:09
Speaker 6: a noble and a true conceit of godlike amity, which
• 1:31:13
Speaker 6: appears most strongly in bearing thus the absence of your lord.
• 1:31:18
Speaker 6: But if you knew to whom you show this honor,
• 1:31:21
Speaker 6: how true a gentleman you send relief, how dear a
• 1:31:25
Speaker 6: lover of my Lord your husband, I know you would
• 1:31:28
Speaker 6: be prouder of the work than customary bounty can enforce you.
• 1:31:32
Speaker 10: I never did repent for doing good, nor shall not now.
• 1:31:36
Speaker 10: For in companions that do converse and waste the time together,
• 1:31:40
Speaker 10: whose souls do bear an equal yoke of love, there
• 1:31:43
Speaker 10: must be needs a like proportion of lineaments, of manners
• 1:31:46
Speaker 10: and of spirit, which makes me think that this Antonio,
• 1:31:49
Speaker 10: being the bosom lover of my Lord, must needs be
• 1:31:52
Speaker 10: like my Lord. If it be so, how little is
• 1:31:56
Speaker 10: the cost I have bestowed in purchasing the semblance of
• 1:31:58
Speaker 10: my soul from our the state of hellish cruelty. This
• 1:32:02
Speaker 10: comes too near the praising of myself. Therefore know more
• 1:32:05
Speaker 10: of it. Hear other things, Lorenzo, I commit into your
• 1:32:09
Speaker 10: hands the husbandry and manage of my house until my
• 1:32:12
Speaker 10: Lord's return. For mine own part, I have toward Heaven
• 1:32:16
Speaker 10: breathed a secret vow to live in prayer and contemplation
• 1:32:19
Speaker 10: only attended by Nourissa here until her husband and my
• 1:32:23
Speaker 10: Lord's return. There is a monastery two miles off, and
• 1:32:27
Speaker 10: there we will abide. I do desire you not to
• 1:32:30
Speaker 10: deny this imposition, the which my love and some necessity
• 1:32:33
  Speaker 10: now lays upon.
• 1:32:34
Speaker 6: You, Madam, with all my heart, I shall obey you
• 1:32:38
Speaker 6: in all fair commands.
• 1:32:40
Speaker 10: My people do already know my mind, and will acknowledge
• 1:32:43
Speaker 10: you and Jessica in place of Lord Bassanio and myself.
• 1:32:47
Speaker 10: So fare you well till we shall meet again.
• 1:32:49
Speaker 6: Fair thoughts and happy hours attend on you.
• 1:32:52
Speaker 16: I wish your ladyship all hearts content.
• 1:32:55
Speaker 10: I thank you for your wish, and am well pleased
• 1:32:58
Speaker 10: to wish it back on you.
• 1:32:59
Speaker 1: Fair well, Jessica, excellent Jessica, and Lorenzo.
• 1:33:04
Speaker 10: Now Balthazar, as I have ever found THEE honest true,
• 1:33:08
Speaker 10: so let me find THEE. Still, take this same letter
• 1:33:12
Speaker 10: and use thou all the endeavor of a man in
• 1:33:14
Speaker 10: speed to Padua. See thou render this into my cousin's hands,
• 1:33:18
Speaker 10: doctor Bellario, And look what notes and garments he doth
• 1:33:21
Speaker 10: give THEE. Bring them. I pray THEE with imagined speed,
• 1:33:24
Speaker 10: unto the traject to the common fairy which trades to venice.
• 1:33:28
Speaker 10: Waste no time in words, but get THEE gone. I
• 1:33:31
Speaker 10: shall be there before THEE.
• 1:33:32
Speaker 8: Madam. I go with all convenient speed.
• 1:33:35
  Speaker 1: Exit.
• 1:33:36
Speaker 10: Come on, Nerissa, I have work in hand that you
• 1:33:38
Speaker 10: yet know not of. We'll see our husbands before they
• 1:33:41
Speaker 10: think of us. Shall they see us, They shall, Nerissa,
• 1:33:45
Speaker 10: but in such a habit that they shall think we
• 1:33:47
Speaker 10: are accomplished with that we lack. I'll hold THEE any
• 1:33:50
Speaker 10: wager when we are both accoutred like young men, I'll
• 1:33:54
Speaker 10: prove the prettier fellow of the two, and wear my
• 1:33:56
Speaker 10: dagger with the braver grace, and speak between the chain
• 1:34:00
Speaker 10: of man and boy with a reed voice, and turn
• 1:34:02
Speaker 10: two mincing steps into a manly stride, and speak a
• 1:34:06
Speaker 10: phrase like a fine bragging youth, and tell quaint lies
• 1:34:10
Speaker 10: how honorable ladies sought my love, which I denying. They
• 1:34:13
Speaker 10: fell sick and died I could not do withal. Then
• 1:34:17
Speaker 10: I'll repent and wish for all that that I had
• 1:34:19
Speaker 10: not killed them. And twenty of these puny lies I'll
• 1:34:22
Speaker 10: tell that. Men shall swear I have discontinued school about
• 1:34:25
Speaker 10: a twelvemonth. I have within my mind a thousand raw
• 1:34:29
Speaker 10: tricks of these bragging jacks, which I will practice.
• 1:34:32
Speaker 11: Why so attend to men, fie.
• 1:34:34
Speaker 10: What a question's that? If thou wert near a lewd interpreter.
• 1:34:38
Speaker 10: But come, I'll tell thee all my whole device when
• 1:34:41
Speaker 10: I am in my coach, which stays for us at
• 1:34:43
Speaker 10: the park gate. And therefore haste away, for we must
• 1:34:46
Speaker 10: measure twenty miles to day.
• 1:34:48
Speaker 1: Excellent scene five the same a garden. Enter Launcelot and Jessica.
• 1:34:58
Speaker 14: Yes, truly, for look you, the sins of the father
• 1:35:03
Speaker 14: are to be laid upon the children. Therefore, I promise you,
• 1:35:08
Speaker 14: I fear you, and I was always plain with you,
• 1:35:12
Speaker 14: And so now I speak my agitation of the matter. Therefore,
• 1:35:16
Speaker 14: be good of cheer. For truly, I think you are damned.
• 1:35:21
Speaker 14: There is but one hope in it that can do
• 1:35:23
Speaker 14: you any good, and that is but a kind of
• 1:35:25
  Speaker 14: bastard hope.
• 1:35:26
Speaker 16: Neither and what hope is that I pray thee Mary.
• 1:35:30
Speaker 14: You may partly hope that your father got you, not
• 1:35:33
Speaker 14: that you are not the Jew's daughter.
• 1:35:35
Speaker 16: That were a kind of bastard hope. Indeed, so the
• 1:35:38
Speaker 16: sins of my mother should be visited upon me.
• 1:35:41
Speaker 14: Truly, then I fear you are damned both by father
• 1:35:44
Speaker 14: and mother. Thus, when I shun Skyla your father, I
• 1:35:48
Speaker 14: fall into carry this your mother. Well you are gone
• 1:35:52
  Speaker 14: both ways.
• 1:35:53
Speaker 16: I shall be saved by my husband. He hath made
• 1:35:56
  Speaker 16: me a Christian.
• 1:35:57
Speaker 14: Truly, the more to blame he. We were Christians, and
• 1:36:01
Speaker 14: now before Ian as many as could well live, one
• 1:36:04
Speaker 14: by another. This making of Christians will raise the price
• 1:36:08
Speaker 14: of hogs. If we grow all to be pork eaters,
• 1:36:11
Speaker 14: we shall not shortly have a rasher on the coals
• 1:36:14
  Speaker 14: for money.
• 1:36:15
Speaker 16: I'll tell my husband Lncelot, what you say here he comes.
• 1:36:20
  Speaker 1: Enter Lorenzo.
• 1:36:22
Speaker 6: I shall grow jealous of you shortly, Lncelot, If you
• 1:36:25
Speaker 6: thus get my wife into corners.
• 1:36:28
Speaker 16: Nay, you need not fear us. Lorenzo Launcelot and I
• 1:36:32
Speaker 16: are out. He tells me flatly, there's no mercy for
• 1:36:35
Speaker 16: me in heaven because I am a Jew's daughter. And
• 1:36:38
Speaker 16: he says you are no good member of the commonwealth,
• 1:36:41
Speaker 16: for in converting Jews to Christians, you raise the price
• 1:36:44
  Speaker 16: of pork.
• 1:36:45
Speaker 6: I shall answer that better to the commonwealth than you
• 1:36:49
Speaker 6: can the getting up of the nigro's belly. The more
• 1:36:53
Speaker 6: is with child by you, Lncelot.
• 1:36:56
Speaker 14: It is much that the more should be more than reason.
• 1:36:59
Speaker 14: But if she be less than an honest woman, she
• 1:37:02
Speaker 14: is indeed more than I took her.
• 1:37:04
Speaker 6: For how every fool can play upon the word? I
• 1:37:09
Speaker 6: think the best grace of wit will shortly turn into silence,
• 1:37:13
Speaker 6: and discourse grow commendable in none only but parents go in, Sarah,
• 1:37:19
Speaker 6: bid them prepare for dinner that.
• 1:37:22
Speaker 14: Is done, Sir, they have all stomachs.
• 1:37:25
Speaker 6: Goodly, Lord, what a wit snapper are you? Then bid
• 1:37:29
  Speaker 6: them prepare dinner.
• 1:37:30
Speaker 14: That is done too? Sa? Only cover is the word?
• 1:37:33
  Speaker 6: Will you cover?
• 1:37:34
  Speaker 8: Then, sir?
• 1:37:36
Speaker 14: Not so? Sa? Neither I know my duty yet more?
• 1:37:40
Speaker 6: Quarreling with occasion, wilt thou show the whole wealth of
• 1:37:44
Speaker 6: thy wit in an instant, I pray thee understand a
• 1:37:48
Speaker 6: plain man in his plain meaning, go to thy fellows,
• 1:37:52
Speaker 6: bid them cover the table, serve in the meat, and
• 1:37:56
Speaker 6: we will come in to dinner.
• 1:37:58
Speaker 14: For the table, sa, it shall be so in for
• 1:38:00
Speaker 14: the metsa, it should be covered for your coming in
• 1:38:04
Speaker 14: to dinner, sir. Why let it be as humors and
• 1:38:08
Speaker 14: conceits shall govern exit.
• 1:38:10
Speaker 6: Oh, dear discretion, how his words are suited. The fool
• 1:38:14
Speaker 6: hath planted in his memory an army of good words.
• 1:38:18
Speaker 6: And I do know a many fools that stand in
• 1:38:22
Speaker 6: better place, garnished like him, that for a tricksy word
• 1:38:26
Speaker 6: defy the matter. How cheerest thou, Jessica, And now, good
• 1:38:31
Speaker 6: sweet say thy opinion, How dost thou like the Lord
• 1:38:35
  Speaker 6: Bassanio's wife.
• 1:38:37
Speaker 16: Past all expressing it is very meet the Lord Bissanio
• 1:38:41
Speaker 16: live an upright life for having such a blessing in
• 1:38:44
Speaker 16: his lady. He finds the joys of heaven here on earth.
• 1:38:48
Speaker 16: And if on earth he do not merit it, in reason,
• 1:38:51
Speaker 16: he should never come to heaven. Why if two gods
• 1:38:55
Speaker 16: should play some heavenly match, and on the wager lay
• 1:38:58
Speaker 16: two earthly women, and poor Rusia one, there must be
• 1:39:01
Speaker 16: something else pawned with the other. For the poor rude world.
• 1:39:06
Speaker 16: Hath not her fellow.
• 1:39:07
Speaker 6: Even such a husband. Hast thou of me as she
• 1:39:11
Speaker 6: is for a wife?
• 1:39:12
Speaker 16: Nay, but ask my opinion too of that.
• 1:39:16
Speaker 6: I will anon. First, Let us go to dinner.
• 1:39:19
Speaker 16: Nay, let me praise you while I have a stomach.
• 1:39:22
Speaker 6: No pray thee. Let it serve for table talk. Then,
• 1:39:26
Speaker 6: how sooe'er thou speakest among other things? I shall digest
• 1:39:31
  Speaker 6: it well.
• 1:39:32
Speaker 16: I'll set you forth excellent.
• 1:39:36
Speaker 1: End of Act three, Act four, Scene one, venice. A
• 1:39:44
Speaker 1: court of justice, enter the Duke, the magnificos Antonio, Bassanio, Gratiano, Salarino, Salanio,
• 1:39:56
  Speaker 1: and others.
• 1:39:57
Speaker 20: What isn't on you here?
• 1:39:59
  Speaker 8: Ready?
• 1:40:00
Speaker 2: So please your Grace?
• 1:40:02
Speaker 20: I am sorry for thee. Thou art come to answer
• 1:40:05
Speaker 20: a stony adversary and in human wretch, uncapable of pity,
• 1:40:10
Speaker 20: void and empty from any dream of mercy.
• 1:40:13
Speaker 2: I have heard your Grace has taken great pains to
• 1:40:16
Speaker 2: qualify his rigorous course. But since he stands obdurate, and
• 1:40:21
Speaker 2: that no lawful means can carry me out of his
• 1:40:25
Speaker 2: envy's reach, I do oppose my patience to his fury.
• 1:40:31
Speaker 2: And am armed to suffer with a quietness of spirit
• 1:40:34
Speaker 2: the very tyranny and rage of his Go one and
• 1:40:38
Speaker 2: call the Jew into the court.
• 1:40:40
Speaker 3: He is ready at the door.
• 1:40:41
Speaker 6: He comes, my Lord, enter.
• 1:40:43
Speaker 20: Shylac, make room, and let him stand before our face.
• 1:40:48
  Speaker 8: Shylock.
• 1:40:49
Speaker 20: The world thinks, and I think so too, that thou
• 1:40:53
Speaker 20: but leadest this fashion of thy malice to the last
• 1:40:58
Speaker 20: hour of act. And then tis thought thou'lt show thy
• 1:41:02
Speaker 20: mercy and remorse more strange there is thy strange apparent cruelty.
• 1:41:09
Speaker 20: And where thou now exact the penalty which the pound
• 1:41:13
Speaker 20: of this poor merchant's flush, thou wilt not only lose
• 1:41:18
Speaker 20: the forfeiture, but touch'd with human gentleness and love forgiven
• 1:41:23
Speaker 20: moiety of the principle glance in an eye of pity
• 1:41:27
Speaker 20: of his losses, have of late, so huddled on his back,
• 1:41:32
Speaker 20: enow to press a royal merchant down and black commiseration
• 1:41:37
Speaker 20: of his state for brassy bosoms and rough hearts of
• 1:41:41
Speaker 20: flint from stubborn turrets and tartars, never train'd to offices
• 1:41:47
Speaker 20: of tender courtesy. We all expect a gentle answer, Jew,
• 1:41:53
  Speaker 20: I have possessed.
• 1:41:54
Speaker 8: Your grace of what I purpose and by our holy
• 1:41:58
Speaker 8: Sabbath have I sworn to have the due and forfeit
• 1:42:00
Speaker 8: of my bond. If you deny it, let the danger
• 1:42:05
Speaker 8: light upon your charter and your city's freedom. You'll ask
• 1:42:10
Speaker 8: me why I rather choose to have a weight of
• 1:42:12
Speaker 8: carrying flesh than to receive three thousand dockets. I'll not
• 1:42:16
Speaker 8: answer that, but say it is my humor? Is it answered?
• 1:42:22
Speaker 8: What if my house be troubled with a rat, and
• 1:42:25
Speaker 8: I be pleased to give ten thousand dockets to have
• 1:42:27
Speaker 8: it paint? What are you answered? Yet? Some men there
• 1:42:31
Speaker 8: are love not a gaping pig, some that are mad
• 1:42:34
Speaker 8: if they behold a cat, And others when the bagpipe sings,
• 1:42:38
Speaker 8: the nose cannot contain their urine. For affection, mistress of passion,
• 1:42:44
Speaker 8: sways it to the mood of what it likes or lows.
• 1:42:47
Speaker 8: Now for your answer, as there is no firm reason
• 1:42:52
Speaker 8: to be rendered. Why he cannot abide a gaping pig?
• 1:42:55
Speaker 8: Why he a harmless necessary cat? Why he a walling bagpipe?
• 1:43:00
Speaker 8: But a force must yield to such inevitable shame as
• 1:43:03
Speaker 8: to offend himself being offended? So can I give no reason?
• 1:43:09
Speaker 8: Nor will I not more than a lodged hate and
• 1:43:14
Speaker 8: a certain loathing. I bear Antonio that I follow thus
• 1:43:18
Speaker 8: a losing suit against him. Are you answered?
• 1:43:22
Speaker 5: This is no answer, thou, unfeeling man, to excuse the
• 1:43:26
Speaker 5: current of thy cruelty.
• 1:43:28
Speaker 8: I am not bound to please thee with my answer.
• 1:43:32
Speaker 5: Do all men kill the things they do not?
• 1:43:35
  Speaker 7: Love?
• 1:43:36
Speaker 8: Hates any man the thing he would not kill?
• 1:43:38
Speaker 5: Every offense is not a hate at first?
• 1:43:42
Speaker 8: What wouldst thou have a serpent sting me twice?
• 1:43:46
Speaker 2: I pray you think you question with the Jew? You
• 1:43:50
Speaker 2: may as well go stand upon the beach and bid
• 1:43:52
Speaker 2: the main flood bait his usual height. You may as
• 1:43:56
Speaker 2: well use question with the wolf why he hath made
• 1:43:58
Speaker 2: the ewe bleat for the land. You may as well
• 1:44:02
Speaker 2: forbid the mountain pines to wag their high tops and
• 1:44:05
Speaker 2: to make no noise when they are fretting with the
• 1:44:07
Speaker 2: gusts of heaven. May as well do anything most hard
• 1:44:12
Speaker 2: as to seek to soften that than which what's harder
• 1:44:16
Speaker 2: his Jewish heart. Therefore, I do beseech you make no
• 1:44:21
Speaker 2: more offers, use no farther means. But with all brief
• 1:44:26
Speaker 2: and plain conveniency, let me have judgment, and the Jew
• 1:44:32
  Speaker 2: his will for.
• 1:44:33
Speaker 5: Thy three thousand ducats here is six.
• 1:44:36
Speaker 8: If every ducket in six thousand duckets were in six parts,
• 1:44:41
Speaker 8: and every part a ducket, I would not draw them.
• 1:44:44
Speaker 8: I would have my bond.
• 1:44:47
Speaker 20: How shalt thou hope for mercy, rendering none?
• 1:44:50
Speaker 8: What judgment? Shall I dread? Doing no wrong? You have
• 1:44:56
Speaker 8: among you many a purchased slave, which, like your asses
• 1:45:00
Speaker 8: and your dogs and mules, you use in abject and
• 1:45:03
Speaker 8: in slavish parts, because you bought them. Shall I say
• 1:45:08
Speaker 8: to you? Let them be free, marry them to your heirs?
• 1:45:13
Speaker 8: Why sweat they under burdens? Let their beds be made
• 1:45:17
Speaker 8: as soft as yours, and let their palates be seasoned
• 1:45:20
Speaker 8: with such viands. You will answer, the slaves are ours.
• 1:45:27
Speaker 8: So do I answer you. The pound of flesh which
• 1:45:33
Speaker 8: I demand of him is dearly bought, tis mine, and
• 1:45:41
Speaker 8: I will have it. If you deny me, fly upon
• 1:45:46
Speaker 8: your law. There is no force in the decrees of venice.
• 1:45:51
Speaker 8: I stand for judgment. Answer Shall I have it?
• 1:45:54
Speaker 20: Upon my power? I may dismiss discord unless Belarrio learned, doctor,
• 1:46:01
Speaker 20: whom I have sent for to determine this, come here today,
• 1:46:06
  Speaker 20: my lord.
• 1:46:07
Speaker 3: Here stays without a messenger with letters from the doctor.
• 1:46:10

Speaker 20: Bring us the letters call the messenger.
• 1:46:14
Speaker 5: Good cheer, Antonio, what man courage? Yet the Jews shall
• 1:46:19
Speaker 5: have my flesh, blood, bones, and all ere thou shalt
• 1:46:22
Speaker 5: lose for me one drop of blood.
• 1:46:25
Speaker 2: I am a tainted weather of the flock, meetest for death.
• 1:46:30
Speaker 2: The weakest kind of fruit drops earliest to the ground.
• 1:46:34
Speaker 8: And so let me.
• 1:46:36
Speaker 2: You cannot better be employed, Massanio, than to live still
• 1:46:42
Speaker 2: and write mine epitaph.
• 1:46:44
Speaker 1: Enter Nearissa, dressed like a lawyer's clerk.
• 1:46:47
Speaker 20: Came you from Padua, from Bellario.
• 1:46:50
Speaker 11: From both My Lord Lario grids your grace.
• 1:46:53
  Speaker 1: Present a letter.
• 1:46:55
Speaker 5: Why dost thou wet thy knife so earnestly.
• 1:46:59
Speaker 8: To cut the forfeiture from that bankrupt there not on
• 1:47:03
Speaker 8: thy soul, but on thy soul harsh jew Thou makest
• 1:47:07
Speaker 8: thy knife keen but no metal, can no not the
• 1:47:10
Speaker 8: hangman's axe bear half the keenness of thy sharp envy.
• 1:47:14
Speaker 7: Can no prayers pierce thee.
• 1:47:16
Speaker 8: No none that thou hast wit enough to make.
• 1:47:19
Speaker 7: Oh be thou damned inexecrable dog, And for thy life
• 1:47:24
Speaker 7: let justice be accused. Thou almost makest me waver in
• 1:47:27
Speaker 7: my faith to hold opinion with Pythagoras, that souls of
• 1:47:31
Speaker 7: animals infuse themselves into the trunks of men. Thy courish
• 1:47:35
Speaker 7: spirit governed a wolf who hanged for human slaughter. Even
• 1:47:39
Speaker 7: from the gallows, did his fell soul fleet, And whilst
• 1:47:43
Speaker 7: thou layce in thy unhallowed dam infused itself in thee.
• 1:47:47
Speaker 7: For thy desires are wolfish, bloody, starved, and ravenous.
• 1:47:52
Speaker 8: Till thou canst rail the seal from off my bond,
• 1:47:55
Speaker 8: Thou but offense thy lungs to speak so loud repair
• 1:47:59
Speaker 8: thy wit, could you? It will fall to cureless ruin.
• 1:48:03
Speaker 8: I stand here for law.
• 1:48:05
Speaker 20: This letter from Bellario doth command a young, unlearned doctor
• 1:48:09
Speaker 20: to our courts. Where is he?
• 1:48:12
Speaker 11: He attended here hard by to now you answer, but
• 1:48:14
Speaker 11: they all meet him.
• 1:48:15
Speaker 20: With all my heart. Some three or four of you
• 1:48:19
Speaker 20: go give him courteous conduct to this place. Meantime the
• 1:48:24
Speaker 20: court shall hear Bellario's letter.
• 1:48:26
Speaker 21: Your grace shall understand that at the receipt of your letter,
• 1:48:30
Speaker 21: I am very sick. But in the instant that your
• 1:48:33
Speaker 21: messenger came in loving visitation, was with me a young
• 1:48:38
Speaker 21: doctor of Rome. His name is bothasar I acquainted him
• 1:48:43
Speaker 21: with the cause and controversy between the Jew and Antonio.
• 1:48:47
Speaker 21: The merchant, we turned o'er many books together. He is
• 1:48:52
Speaker 21: furnished with my opinion, which bettered with his own learning.
• 1:48:57
Speaker 21: The greatness whereof I cannot enough command, and comes with
• 1:49:01
Speaker 21: him at my importunity to fill up your grace's request.
• 1:49:05
Speaker 21: In my stead, I beseech you let his luck of
• 1:49:09
Speaker 21: years be no impediment, to let him lack a reverent estimation.
• 1:49:15
Speaker 21: For I never knew so young a body with so
• 1:49:17
Speaker 21: old a head. I leave him to your gracious acceptance.
• 1:49:22
Speaker 21: Whose trial shall better publish his commendation.
• 1:49:25
Speaker 20: You hear the learned Bellario what he writes, and here
• 1:49:30
Speaker 20: I take it is a doctor.
• 1:49:31
Speaker 1: Come enter Portia, dressed like a doctor of laws.
• 1:49:36
Speaker 20: You are welcome, take your place. Are you acquainted with
• 1:49:41
Speaker 20: the difference that holds this present question in the court?
• 1:49:45
Speaker 10: I am informant truly of the cause, which is the
• 1:49:49
Speaker 10: merchant here and which.
• 1:49:50
Speaker 20: The Jew, Antonio and old Shylock both sand Force is
• 1:49:55
  Speaker 20: your name.
• 1:49:55
Speaker 8: Shylock, Shylock is my name of a.
• 1:49:59
Speaker 10: S nature is the suit you follow? Yet in such
• 1:50:03
Speaker 10: rule that the Venetian law cannot impugne you as you
• 1:50:05
Speaker 10: do proceed to Antonio. You stand within his danger?
• 1:50:09
Speaker 8: Do you not ay?
• 1:50:11
  Speaker 7: So?
• 1:50:11
Speaker 12: He says, Do you confess the bond?
• 1:50:14
  Speaker 8: I do?
• 1:50:15
Speaker 10: Then must the Jew be merciful?
• 1:50:17
Speaker 8: On what compulsion? Must I tell me that the.
• 1:50:21
Speaker 10: Quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the
• 1:50:25
Speaker 10: gentle reign from heaven upon the place beneath. It is
• 1:50:29
Speaker 10: twice blessed. It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes,
• 1:50:33
Speaker 10: tis mightiest. In the mightiest it becomes the throned monarch,
• 1:50:37
Speaker 10: better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of
• 1:50:40
Speaker 10: temporal power, the attribute to awe and majesty, wherein doth
• 1:50:44
Speaker 10: sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy is
• 1:50:47
Speaker 10: above this sceptred sway. It is enthroned in the hearts
• 1:50:51
Speaker 10: of kings. It is an attribute to God himself and
• 1:50:55
Speaker 10: earthly power. Doth then show likest gods when mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
• 1:51:02
Speaker 10: though justice be thy plea, consider this, that in the
• 1:51:06
Speaker 10: course of justice none of us should see salvation. We
• 1:51:09
Speaker 10: do pray for mercy, and that same prayer doth teach
• 1:51:13
Speaker 10: us all to render the deeds of mercy. I have
• 1:51:16
Speaker 10: spoke thus much to mitigate the justice of thy plea, which,
• 1:51:20
Speaker 10: if thou follow this strict court of Venice, must needs
• 1:51:23
Speaker 10: give sentence against the merchant.
• 1:51:25
Speaker 8: There my deeds upon my head. I crave the law,
• 1:51:31
Speaker 8: the penalty, and forfeit of my bond.
• 1:51:34
Speaker 10: Is he not able to discharge the money?
• 1:51:36
  Speaker 8: Yes?
• 1:51:37
Speaker 5: Here I tender it for him in the court, yea
• 1:51:40
Speaker 5: twice the sum. If that will not suffice, I will
• 1:51:44
Speaker 5: be bound to pay it ten times, or on forfeit
• 1:51:47
Speaker 5: of my hands, my head, my heart. If this will
• 1:51:51
Speaker 5: not suffice, it must appear that malice bears down truth.
• 1:51:56
Speaker 5: And I beseech you rest once the law to your
• 1:51:59
Speaker 5: author Artie, to do a great right, do a little wrong,
• 1:52:03
Speaker 5: and curb this cruel devil of his will.
• 1:52:07
Speaker 10: It must not be. There is no power in venice
• 1:52:10
Speaker 10: can alter a decree. Establish it twill be recorded for
• 1:52:13
Speaker 10: a precedent, and many an error by the same example
• 1:52:16
Speaker 10: will rush into this state. It cannot be.
• 1:52:19
Speaker 8: Ah Daniel, come to judgment, yea a Daniel, Oh wise,
• 1:52:25
Speaker 8: young judge, how I do honor thee I pray you?
• 1:52:28
Speaker 10: Let me look upon the bond.
• 1:52:30
Speaker 8: Here tis most reverend doctor. Here it is Shylock.
• 1:52:34
Speaker 10: There's thrice thy money.
• 1:52:36
Speaker 8: Offered thee an oath, an oath, I have an oath
• 1:52:41
Speaker 8: in heaven. Shall I lay perjury upon my soul? No,
• 1:52:47
  Speaker 8: not for venice.
• 1:52:48
Speaker 10: Why this bond is forfeit, and lawfully by this the
• 1:52:52
Speaker 10: jew may claim a pound of flesh to be by
• 1:52:55
Speaker 10: him cut off nearest the merchant's heart. Be merciful. Take
• 1:52:59
Speaker 10: thrice thy money. Bid me tear the bond when it.
• 1:53:02
Speaker 8: Is paid according to the tenor. It's doth appear you
• 1:53:06
Speaker 8: are a worthy judge. You know the law. Your exposition
• 1:53:10
Speaker 8: hath been most sound. I charge you by the law,
• 1:53:14
Speaker 8: whereof you are a well deserving pillar. Proceed to judgment
• 1:53:18
Speaker 8: by my soul. I swear there is no power in
• 1:53:21
Speaker 8: the tongue of man to walter me. I stay here
• 1:53:23
  Speaker 8: upon my bond.
• 1:53:25
Speaker 2: Most heartily, I do beseech the court to give the judgment.
• 1:53:28
Speaker 10: Why then, thus it is you must prepare your bosom
• 1:53:32
  Speaker 10: for his knife.
• 1:53:33
Speaker 8: No, noble judge, O, excellent young man, for the intent.
• 1:53:37
Speaker 10: And purpose of the law, hath full relation to the
• 1:53:39
Speaker 10: penalty which here appereth do upon the bond?
• 1:53:43
Speaker 8: Tis very true, O, wise and upright judge. How much
• 1:53:46
Speaker 8: more elder art thou than thy looks.
• 1:53:49
Speaker 10: Therefore lay bare your bosom.
• 1:53:51
Speaker 8: Aye his breast, so says the bond. Doth it not,
• 1:53:54
Speaker 8: noble judge nearest his heart? Those are the very words
• 1:53:58
  Speaker 8: it is so.
• 1:54:00
Speaker 10: Are there balance here to weigh the flesh?
• 1:54:02
Speaker 8: I have them ready, have by some surgeon.
• 1:54:04
Speaker 10: Shylock on your charge to stop his wounds lest he
• 1:54:07
Speaker 10: do bleed to death?
• 1:54:08
Speaker 8: Is it so nominated in the bond?
• 1:54:10
Speaker 10: It is not so expressed. But what of that toware good?
• 1:54:13
Speaker 10: You do so much for charity?
• 1:54:15
Speaker 8: I cannot find It is not in the bond you, merchant.
• 1:54:19
Speaker 10: Have you anything to say?
• 1:54:20
Speaker 2: But little I am armed and well prepared. Give me
• 1:54:27
Speaker 2: your hand besanio fare you well grieve not that I
• 1:54:33
Speaker 2: am fallen to this for you, for herein fortune shows
• 1:54:37
Speaker 2: herself more kind than is her custom. It is still
• 1:54:41
Speaker 2: her use to let the wretched man outlive his wealth,
• 1:54:45
Speaker 2: to view with hollow eye and wrinkled brow, an age
• 1:54:50
Speaker 2: of poverty from which lingering penance of such misery does
• 1:54:56
Speaker 2: she cut me off? Come to your honorable wife, Tell
• 1:55:02
Speaker 2: her the process of Antonio's end. Say how I loved you?
• 1:55:09
Speaker 2: Speak me fair in death, And when the tale is told,
• 1:55:15
Speaker 2: bid her be judge whether Bassanio had not once a
• 1:55:18
Speaker 2: love repent but you that you shall lose your friend.
• 1:55:27
Speaker 2: And he repents not that he pays your debt. For
• 1:55:31
Speaker 2: if the Jew do cut but deep enough, I'll pay
• 1:55:35
Speaker 2: it instantly with all my heart.
• 1:55:38
Speaker 5: Antonio, I am married to a wife, which is as
• 1:55:40
Speaker 5: dear to me as life itself. But life itself, my
• 1:55:45
Speaker 5: wife and all the world are not with me esteemed
• 1:55:48
Speaker 5: above thy life. I would lose all ay, sacrifice them
• 1:55:52
Speaker 5: all here to this devil to deliver you.
• 1:55:54
Speaker 10: Your wife would give you little thanks for that if
• 1:55:57
Speaker 10: she were by to hear you make the offer.
• 1:56:00
  Speaker 7: I have a wife whom I protest, I love. I
• 1:56:03
Speaker 7: would she were in heaven so she could entreat some
• 1:56:07
Speaker 7: power to change discouraged jew tis well.
• 1:56:10
Speaker 11: You off it behind her back, which would else make
• 1:56:12
  Speaker 11: an inquiet house.
• 1:56:13
Speaker 8: These be the Christian husbands. I have a daughter. Would
• 1:56:19
Speaker 8: any of the stock of Barrabas had been her husband
• 1:56:21
Speaker 8: rather than a Christian? We trifle time, I pray thee
• 1:56:25
  Speaker 8: pursue sentence.
• 1:56:26
Speaker 10: A pound of that same merchant's flesh is thine. The
• 1:56:30
Speaker 10: court awards it, and the law doth give it.
• 1:56:33
Speaker 8: Most rightful judge, And you must.
• 1:56:35
Speaker 10: Cut this flesh from off his breast. The law allows it,
• 1:56:38
  Speaker 10: and the court.
• 1:56:39
Speaker 8: Awards it, most learned judge a sentence. Come, prepare tarry
• 1:56:44
  Speaker 8: a little.
• 1:56:45
Speaker 10: There is something else. This bond doth give thee here
• 1:56:49
Speaker 10: no jot of blood. The words expressly are a pound
• 1:56:53
Speaker 10: of flesh. Take then thy bond. Take thou thy pound
• 1:56:58
Speaker 10: of flesh. But in the cutting it, if thou dost
• 1:57:01
Speaker 10: shed one drop of Christian blood, thy lands and goods
• 1:57:05
Speaker 10: are by the laws of Venice confiscate unto the state
• 1:57:08
  Speaker 10: of Venice.
• 1:57:09
Speaker 7: Oh upright Judge Mark Jew, oh learned judge, is that
• 1:57:15
  Speaker 7: the law.
• 1:57:16
Speaker 10: Thyself shalt see the act. For as thou urgest justice
• 1:57:20
Speaker 10: be assured, thou shalt have justice more than thou desirest.
• 1:57:24
Speaker 7: Oh learned Judge Mark Jew, a learned judge.
• 1:57:28
Speaker 8: I take this offer, then pay the bond thrice, and
• 1:57:31
Speaker 8: let the Christian go.
• 1:57:33
Speaker 5: Here is the money soft.
• 1:57:35
Speaker 10: The jew shall have all justice soft, no haste. He
• 1:57:38
Speaker 10: shall have nothing but the.
• 1:57:40
Speaker 7: Penalty, Oh Jew, an upright judge, a learned judge.
• 1:57:45
Speaker 10: Therefore, prepare thee to cut off the flesh. Shed thou
• 1:57:48
Speaker 10: no blood, nor cut thou less nor more, but just
• 1:57:52
Speaker 10: a pound of flesh. If thou takest more or less
• 1:57:56
Speaker 10: than a just pound, be it but so much as
• 1:57:59
Speaker 10: makes light or heavy in the substance or the division
• 1:58:02
Speaker 10: of the twentieth part of one poor scruple. Nay, if
• 1:58:06
Speaker 10: the scale do turn, but in the estimation of a hair,
• 1:58:09
Speaker 10: thou diest, and all thy goods are confiscate.
• 1:58:12
Speaker 7: A second Daniel, A Daniel. Jew, now in fidel, I
• 1:58:17
Speaker 7: have you on thy hip?
• 1:58:18
Speaker 10: Why doth the Jew pause? Take thy forfeiture?
• 1:58:21
Speaker 8: Give me my principle and let me go.
• 1:58:24
Speaker 5: I have it ready for thee Here it is.
• 1:58:26
Speaker 10: He hath refused it in the open court. He shall
• 1:58:29
Speaker 10: have merely justice and his bond.
• 1:58:32
  Speaker 7: A Daniel Still, I say, a second Daniel, I thank
• 1:58:35
Speaker 7: thee Jew for teaching me that word.
• 1:58:37
Speaker 8: Shall I not have barely my principle?
• 1:58:40
Speaker 10: Thou shalt have nothing but the forfeiture to be so
• 1:58:43
Speaker 10: taken at thy peril?
• 1:58:44
Speaker 8: Jew? Why then the devil give him good of it?
• 1:58:47
Speaker 8: I'll stay no longer.
• 1:58:48
Speaker 10: Question, tarry Jew. The law hath yet another hold on you.
• 1:58:53
Speaker 10: It is enacted in the laws of Venice. If it
• 1:58:56
Speaker 10: be proved against an alien that by direct or indie
• 1:59:00
Speaker 10: direct attempts he seek the life of any citizen, the
• 1:59:03
Speaker 10: part against the which he doth contrive shall seize one
• 1:59:05
Speaker 10: half his goods. The other half comes to the privy
• 1:59:09
Speaker 10: coffer of the state, And the offender's life lies in
• 1:59:12
Speaker 10: the mercy of the Duke only against all other voice
• 1:59:16
Speaker 10: in which predicament I say thou standest, for it appears
• 1:59:20
Speaker 10: by manifest proceeding that indirectly and directly too, thou hast
• 1:59:24
Speaker 10: contrived against the very life of the defendant, And thou
• 1:59:28
Speaker 10: hast incurred the danger formerly by me rehearsed down. Therefore,
• 1:59:32
  Speaker 10: and beg mercy.
• 1:59:33
Speaker 7: Of the Duke, beg that thou mayst have leave to
• 1:59:36
Speaker 7: hang thyself. And yet thy wealth being forfeit to the state,
• 1:59:40
Speaker 7: thou hast not left the value of a cord. Therefore
• 1:59:43
Speaker 7: thou must be hanged at the state's charge, that thou.

Speaker 20: Shalt see the difference of our spirits. I pardon thee
• 1:59:51
Speaker 20: thy life, before thou askest for half thy wealth. It
• 1:59:56
Speaker 20: is Antonius. The other half it comes to the general state,
• 2:00:02
Speaker 20: which humbleness may drive unto a.
• 2:00:04
Speaker 10: Fine ay for the state, not for Antonio.
• 2:00:08
Speaker 8: They take my life, and all pardon not that you
• 2:00:13
Speaker 8: take my house. When you do take the prop that
• 2:00:15
Speaker 8: doth sustain my house? You take my life when you
• 2:00:18
Speaker 8: to take the means whereby I live?
• 2:00:20
Speaker 10: What mercy can you render him?
• 2:00:22
Speaker 7: Antonio A halter grottis nothing else for God's sake.
• 2:00:27

Speaker 2: other half in use to render it upon his death.
• 2:00:40
Speaker 2: Unto the gentleman that lately stole his daughter, two things
• 2:00:45
Speaker 2: provided more, that for this favor he presently become a Christian.

Speaker 8: I would assign it. Get thee gone, But do it
• 2:01:25
  Speaker 8: in christening.
• 2:01:26
Speaker 7: Shalt thou have two godfathers? Had I been judged, thou
• 2:01:30
Speaker 7: shouldst have had ten more to bring thee to the gallows,
• 2:01:34
Speaker 7: not to the font.
• 2:01:35
Speaker 20: Exit Shylock, Sir, I entreat you home with me to dinner.

• 2:01:51
Speaker 20: Gratify this gentleman, for in my mind you are much
• 2:01:56
  Speaker 20: bound to him.
• 2:01:57
Speaker 1: Exit Duke Magnificant and.
• 2:02:01
Speaker 5: Train most worthy gentlemen, I and my friend have, by

Speaker 5: your wisdom been this day acquitted of grievous penalties in
• 2:02:09
Speaker 5: lieu whereof three thousand ducats do unto the jew We
• 2:02:12
Speaker 5: freely cope your courteous pains withal.
• 2:02:15

  Speaker 2: to you. Evermore.
• 2:02:22
Speaker 10: He is well paid, that is well satisfied, and I,
• 2:02:25
Speaker 10: delivering you, am satisfied. And therein do account myself well paid.
• 2:02:30
Speaker 10: My mind was never yet more mercenary. I pray you
• 2:02:33
Speaker 10: know me when we meet again. I wish you well,

Speaker 10: and so I take my leave.
• 2:02:37
Speaker 5: Dear Sir of force, I must attempt you further take
• 2:02:42
Speaker 5: some remembrance of us as a tribute, not as a fee.
• 2:02:46
Speaker 5: Grant me two things. I pray you not to deny
• 2:02:48
Speaker 5: me and to pardon me.
• 2:02:50
Speaker 10: You press me far, and therefore I will yield to Antonio.
• 2:02:55
Speaker 10: Give me your gloves. I'll wear them for your sake,
• 2:02:57
Speaker 10: to bassagnyo, and for your love. I'll take this ring
• 2:03:01
Speaker 10: from you. Do not draw back your hand. I'll take
• 2:03:04
Speaker 10: no more, and you, in love, shall not deny me
• 2:03:07
  Speaker 10: this this.
• 2:03:08
Speaker 5: Ring, good sir, alas it is a trifle, I will
• 2:03:12
Speaker 5: not shame myself to give you this.
• 2:03:15
Speaker 10: I will have nothing else but only this, And now
• 2:03:18
Speaker 10: methinks I have a mind to it.
• 2:03:20
Speaker 5: There's more depends on this than on the value the
• 2:03:24
Speaker 5: dearest ring in venice will I give you and find
• 2:03:27
Speaker 5: it out by proclamation only for this I pray you
• 2:03:32
  Speaker 5: pardon me.
• 2:03:33
Speaker 10: I see, sir, you are liberal in offers. You taught
• 2:03:36
Speaker 10: me first to beg and now methinks you teach me
• 2:03:39
Speaker 10: how a beggar should be answered.
• 2:03:41
Speaker 5: Good sir, This ring was given me by my wife,
• 2:03:44
Speaker 5: and when she put it on, she made me vow
• 2:03:46
Speaker 5: that I should neither sell, nor give nor lose it.
• 2:03:49
Speaker 10: That excuse serves many men to save their gifts. And
• 2:03:52
Speaker 10: if your wife be not a mad woman, and know
• 2:03:55
Speaker 10: how well I have deserved this ring. She would not
• 2:03:58
Speaker 10: hold out enemy forever. Forgive it to me. Well, peace
• 2:04:01
  Speaker 10: be with.
• 2:04:02
Speaker 1: You, ecciant Portia and Arissa.
• 2:04:05
Speaker 2: My Lord Bassanio. Let him have the ring. Let his
• 2:04:09
Speaker 2: deservings and my love withal be valued against your wife's commandment.
• 2:04:14
Speaker 5: Go Graciano, run and overtake him. Give him the ring

Speaker 10: Inquire the Jew's house out. Give him this deed and
• 2:04:44
Speaker 10: let him sign it. We'll away tonight and be a
• 2:04:47
Speaker 10: day before our husband's home. This deed will be well

  Speaker 10: welcomed to Lorenzo.
• 2:04:52
Speaker 7: Enter Gratiano, their sir, you are well, o'er tatan, my

Speaker 7: lord Bisonio. Upon more advice, hats sent you hear this ring,

Speaker 7: and doth entreat your company at dinner that cannot be
• 2:05:05
  Speaker 7: his ring?
• 2:05:06
Speaker 10: I do accept most thankfully, and so I pray you
• 2:05:09
Speaker 10: tell him. Furthermore, I pray you show my youth old
• 2:05:12
  Speaker 10: Shylock's house.
• 2:05:14
Speaker 11: That will I do, sir, I would speak to you
• 2:05:17
Speaker 11: aside to Porsche, I'll see if I can get my
• 2:05:20
Speaker 11: husband's ring, which I didn't make him swear to keep Brether.
• 2:05:23
Speaker 10: To Narissa, thou mayest I warrant we shall have old
• 2:05:26
Speaker 10: swearing that they did give the rings away to men.
• 2:05:29
Speaker 10: But we'll outface them and outswear them too away. Make
• 2:05:33
Speaker 10: haste thou know'st where I will Terry come good?
• 2:05:36
  Speaker 8: Sir?
• 2:05:37
Speaker 11: Will you show me to this house?
• 2:05:38
Speaker 1: Excellent? End of Act four, Act five, Scene one, Belmont
• 2:05:48
Speaker 1: the avenue to Porsche's home. Enter Lorenzo and Jessica.
• 2:05:55
Speaker 6: The moon shines bright in such a night as this,
• 2:05:59
Speaker 6: when the sweet wind did gently kiss the trees, and
• 2:06:03
Speaker 6: they did make no noise. In such a night, Troilis Methinks,
• 2:06:07
Speaker 6: mounted the troyon walls and sighed his soul toward the
• 2:06:11
Speaker 6: Greci intense, where Crescid lay that night.
• 2:06:15
Speaker 16: In such a night did thisby fearfully or trip the dew,
• 2:06:19
Speaker 16: and saw the lion's shadow ere himself and ran dismayed away.
• 2:06:25
Speaker 6: In such a night stood Dido with a willow in
• 2:06:28
Speaker 6: her hand, upon the wild sea banks and waft her
• 2:06:32
Speaker 6: love to come again to Carthage.
• 2:06:35
Speaker 16: In such a night, Medea gathered the enchanted herbs, that
• 2:06:39
Speaker 16: did renew old Eson.
• 2:06:42
Speaker 6: In such a night did Jessica steele from the wealthy
• 2:06:45
Speaker 6: jew and with an unthrift love did run from Venice
• 2:06:50
Speaker 6: as far as Belmont.
• 2:06:52
Speaker 16: In such a night did young Lorenzo swear he loved
• 2:06:56
Speaker 16: her well, stealing her soul with many vows of faith,
• 2:07:00
  Speaker 16: and ne'er a true one.
• 2:07:02
Speaker 6: In such a night did pretty Jessica, like a little shrew,
• 2:07:06
Speaker 6: slander her love? And he forgave it her.
• 2:07:10
Speaker 16: I would out night to you. Did nobody come but hark?
• 2:07:15
Speaker 16: I hear the footing of a man, enter.
• 2:07:17
Speaker 6: Stefano, who comes so fast in silence of the night.
• 2:07:21
Speaker 6: A friend, A friend? What friend?
• 2:07:24
  Speaker 8: Your name?
• 2:07:24
Speaker 1: I pray you, friend, Stefano is my name?
• 2:07:27
Speaker 22: And I bring word my mistress, will, before the break
• 2:07:30
Speaker 22: of day be here at Belmont. She doth stray about
• 2:07:33
Speaker 22: by holy crosses, where she kneels and prays for happy
• 2:07:36
Speaker 22: wedlock hours. Who comes with her none but a holy
• 2:07:40
Speaker 22: hermit and her maid. I pray you, is my master
• 2:07:43
  Speaker 22: yet returned?
• 2:07:44
Speaker 6: He is not, nor we have not heard from him.
• 2:07:48
  Speaker 8: But go in.
• 2:07:49
Speaker 6: I pray thee Jessica, and ceremoniously, let us prepare some
• 2:07:53
Speaker 6: welcome for the mistress of the house.
• 2:07:56
Speaker 1: Enter launcelot Sola, Sola.
• 2:07:59
Speaker 14: Woha, oh Sola, Sola? Who calls Sola? Did you see
• 2:08:04
Speaker 14: Master Lorenzo, Master Lorenzo Sola? Sola?
• 2:08:08
Speaker 1: Leave helloing man here, Sola, where where here?
• 2:08:13
Speaker 14: Tell him there's a post come from my master with
• 2:08:15
Speaker 14: his hornful of good news. My master will be here
• 2:08:17
  Speaker 14: here morning.
• 2:08:19
Speaker 6: Exit, sweet soul, let's in and there expect they're coming.
• 2:08:24
Speaker 6: And yet no matter, why should we go in? My
• 2:08:29
Speaker 6: friend Stefano, signify, I pray you within the house. Your
• 2:08:32
Speaker 6: mistress is at hand, and bring your music forth into
• 2:08:36
  Speaker 6: the air.
• 2:08:37
  Speaker 1: Exit stey Fano.
• 2:08:39
Speaker 6: How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank. Here we
• 2:08:43
Speaker 6: will sit and let the sounds of music creep in
• 2:08:46
Speaker 6: our ears soft stillness, and the night become the touches
• 2:08:50
Speaker 6: of sweet harmony. Sit, Jessica. Look how the floor of
• 2:08:55
Speaker 6: heaven is thick inlaid with petens of bright gold. There's
• 2:08:59
Speaker 6: not the smallest orb which thou beholdst, but in his
• 2:09:02
Speaker 6: motion like an angel sings still quarrying to the young
• 2:09:07
Speaker 6: eyed cherubims. Such harmony is in immortal souls. But whilst
• 2:09:12
Speaker 6: this muddy vesture of decay doth grossly close it in,
• 2:09:17
Speaker 6: we cannot hear it. Enter, musicians, come ho and wake
• 2:09:22
Speaker 6: Diana with a hymn with sweetness. Touches, pierce your mistress's
• 2:09:28
Speaker 6: ear and draw her home with music music.
• 2:09:32
Speaker 16: I am never merry when I hear sweet music.
• 2:09:35
Speaker 6: The reason is your spirits are attentive. For do not
• 2:09:39
Speaker 6: note a wild and wanton herd, or race of youthful
• 2:09:43
Speaker 6: and unhandled cults, fetching mad bounds, bellowing and neighing loud,
• 2:09:48
Speaker 6: which is the hot condition of their blood. If they
• 2:09:52
Speaker 6: but hear, perchance a trumpet sound, or any air of
• 2:09:56
Speaker 6: music touch their ears, you shall perceive them make a
• 2:09:59
Speaker 6: mutual stand, their savage eyes turned to a modest gaze
• 2:10:04
Speaker 6: by the sweet power of music. Therefore the poet did
• 2:10:09
Speaker 6: fame that Orpheus drew trees, stones and floods, since not
• 2:10:13
Speaker 6: so stockish, hard and full of rage. But music, for
• 2:10:17
Speaker 6: the time doth change his nature. The man that hath
• 2:10:21
Speaker 6: no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord
• 2:10:25
Speaker 6: of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils
• 2:10:32
Speaker 6: the motions of his spirit are dull as night, and
• 2:10:35
Speaker 6: his affections dark as erebus. Let no such man be trusted.
• 2:10:41
Speaker 1: Mark the music, enter Portia and Nerissa at a distance.
• 2:10:47
Speaker 10: That light we see is burning in my hall. How
• 2:10:50
Speaker 10: far that little candle throws his beams, so shines a
• 2:10:53
Speaker 10: good deed in a naughty world.
• 2:10:55
Speaker 11: When the min shine we did not see the candle, So.
• 2:10:58
Speaker 10: Doth the greater glory didn't the less a substitute shines
• 2:11:02
Speaker 10: brightly as a king until a king be by, and
• 2:11:04
Speaker 10: then his state empties itself as doth an inland brook
• 2:11:08
Speaker 10: into the main of waters. Music, Hark, it.
• 2:11:11
Speaker 11: Is your music, Madame of the house.
• 2:11:14
Speaker 10: Nothing is good I see without respect. Methinks it sounds
• 2:11:17
Speaker 10: much sweeter than by day.
• 2:11:19
Speaker 11: Silence bestows that virtue on it. Madame.
• 2:11:21
Speaker 10: The crow doth sing as sweetly as the lark when
• 2:11:23
Speaker 10: neither is attended. And I think the nightingale, if she
• 2:11:27
Speaker 10: should sing by day, when every goose is cackling, would
• 2:11:30
Speaker 10: be thought no better a musician than the wren. How
• 2:11:33
Speaker 10: many things, by season seasoned are to their right praise
• 2:11:37
Speaker 10: and true perfection. Peace ho the moon sleeps within demon
• 2:11:42
Speaker 10: and would not be awaked.
• 2:11:44
Speaker 6: Music ceases, that is the voice, or I am such
• 2:11:48
  Speaker 6: deceived of Portia.
• 2:11:50
Speaker 10: He knows me as the blind man knows the cuckoo
• 2:11:52
Speaker 10: by the bad voice.
• 2:11:54
Speaker 6: Dear lady, welcome home.
• 2:11:56
Speaker 10: We have been praying for our husband's welfare. Which speed
• 2:11:59
Speaker 10: we hope the best for our words. Are they returned?
• 2:12:02
  Speaker 1: Madam?
• 2:12:03
Speaker 6: They are not yet, but there has come a messenger
• 2:12:06
Speaker 6: before to signify their coming.
• 2:12:08
Speaker 10: Go in, Narissa, give order to my servants that they
• 2:12:11
Speaker 10: take no note at all of our being absent. Hence,
• 2:12:14
Speaker 10: nor you Lorenzo Jessica, nor you Hey tuckic.
• 2:12:18
Speaker 6: Sounds your husband is at hand. I hear his trumpet.
• 2:12:22
Speaker 6: We are no tell tales, Madame, fear you not.
• 2:12:25
Speaker 10: This night methinks, is but the daylight's sick. It looks
• 2:12:28
Speaker 10: a little paler tis a day such as the day
• 2:12:31
Speaker 10: is when the sun is hid.
• 2:12:33
Speaker 1: Enter Bassamio, Antonio Gracciano, and their followers.
• 2:12:38
Speaker 5: We should hold day with the antipodes. If you would
• 2:12:41
Speaker 5: walk in absence of the sun.
• 2:12:43
Speaker 10: Let me give light, but let me not be light.
• 2:12:46
Speaker 10: For a light wife doth make a heavy husband, and
• 2:12:49
Speaker 10: never be Bassanio. So for me, but God soart all
• 2:12:52
Speaker 10: you are Welcome home, my lord.
• 2:12:54
Speaker 5: I thank you, madam, give welcome to my friend. This
• 2:12:58
Speaker 5: is the man, this is Antone Neo, to whom I
• 2:13:01
Speaker 5: am so infinitely bound.
• 2:13:03
Speaker 10: You should, in all sense be much bound to him,
• 2:13:06
Speaker 10: For as I hear, he was much.
• 2:13:07
Speaker 2: Bound for you, no more than I am well acquitted
• 2:13:10
  Speaker 2: of sir.
• 2:13:11
Speaker 10: You are very welcome to our house. It must appear
• 2:13:15
Speaker 10: in other ways than words. Therefore I scant this breathing.
• 2:13:18
Speaker 7: Courtesy to Neurissa by yonder Moon. I swear you do
• 2:13:22
Speaker 7: me wrong in faith. I gave it to the judge's clerk.
• 2:13:26
Speaker 7: Would he wear gelt that had it?
• 2:13:28
  Speaker 8: For my part?
• 2:13:29
Speaker 7: Since you do take it? Love so much at heart?
• 2:13:32
Speaker 10: A quarrel hoe already?
• 2:13:34
Speaker 7: What's the matter about a hoop of gold, a paltry
• 2:13:37
  Speaker 7: ring that she.
• 2:13:38
  Speaker 8: Did give me?
• 2:13:39
Speaker 7: Whose poesy was for all the world like Cutler's poetry
• 2:13:43
  Speaker 7: upon a knife?
• 2:13:44
Speaker 8: Love me and leave me not?
• 2:13:46
Speaker 11: What talk you of the poesy? Of the value you
• 2:13:48
Speaker 11: swore to me when I did give it to you,
• 2:13:50
Speaker 11: that you would wear till you're hour of death, and
• 2:13:52
Speaker 11: that it should lie with you in your grave, though
• 2:13:54
Speaker 11: not for me yet, for your vehement oaths, you should
• 2:13:57
Speaker 11: have been respective and have kept it, gave it a
• 2:13:59
Speaker 11: judge clerk, No, God's my judge. The clerk will never wear.
• 2:14:03
Speaker 7: Hair on space that had it, he will, and if
• 2:14:06
Speaker 7: he lived to be a.
• 2:14:07
Speaker 11: Man, I if a woman lived to be a man.
• 2:14:09
Speaker 7: Now by this hand, I gave it to a youth,
• 2:14:12
Speaker 7: a kind of boy, a little scrubbed boy, no higher
• 2:14:16
Speaker 7: than thyself, the judge's clerk, a prating boy that begged
• 2:14:20
Speaker 7: it as a fee. I could not, for my heart
• 2:14:23
  Speaker 7: deny it him.
• 2:14:24
Speaker 10: You were to blame. I must be plain with you
• 2:14:27
Speaker 10: to part so slightly with your wife's first gift, a
• 2:14:30
Speaker 10: thing stuck on with oaths upon your finger, and so
• 2:14:33
Speaker 10: riveted with faith unto your flesh. I gave my love
• 2:14:37
Speaker 10: a ring and made him swear never to part with it.
• 2:14:40
Speaker 10: And here he stands, I dare be sworn for him.
• 2:14:43
Speaker 10: He would not leave it nor pluck it from his finger,
• 2:14:45
Speaker 10: for the wealth that the world masters now in faith. Graciano,
• 2:14:50
Speaker 10: you give your wife too unkind a cause of grief,
• 2:14:53
Speaker 10: and were to me I should be mad at it.
• 2:14:55
Speaker 5: Aside why I were best to cut my left then
• 2:14:58
Speaker 5: off and swear I lost the ring defending it.
• 2:15:01
Speaker 7: My Lord Bassanio gave his ring away unto the judge
• 2:15:04
Speaker 7: that begged it, and indeed deserved it too. And then
• 2:15:08
Speaker 7: the boy his clerk, that took some pains in writing,
• 2:15:12
Speaker 7: he begged mine. And neither man nor master would take
• 2:15:15
Speaker 7: aught but the two rings.
• 2:15:17
Speaker 10: What ring gave you, my lord? Not that I hope
• 2:15:20
Speaker 10: what you received of me.
• 2:15:22
  Speaker 5: If I could add a lie unto a fault, I
• 2:15:24
Speaker 5: would deny it. But you see my finger half, not
• 2:15:27
Speaker 5: the ring upon it.
• 2:15:28
Speaker 10: It is gone, even so void is your false heart
• 2:15:31
Speaker 10: of truth. By Heaven, I will ne'er come in your
• 2:15:34
Speaker 10: bed until I see the ring, nor i'm yours till
• 2:15:37
  Speaker 10: I again.
• 2:15:37
Speaker 5: See mine, Sweet Portia, If you didn't know to whom
• 2:15:41
Speaker 5: I gave the ring, if you didn't know for whom
• 2:15:44
Speaker 5: I gave the ring, and would conceive for what I
• 2:15:48
Speaker 5: gave the ring, and how unwillingly I left the ring
• 2:15:51
Speaker 5: when naught would be accepted but the ring, you would
• 2:15:55
Speaker 5: abate the strength of your displeasure.
• 2:15:58
Speaker 10: If you had known the verse of the ring, or
• 2:16:01
Speaker 10: half her worthiness that gave the ring, or your own
• 2:16:04
Speaker 10: honor to contain the ring, you would not then have
• 2:16:06
Speaker 10: parted with the ring. What man is there so much unreasonable?
• 2:16:11
Speaker 10: If you had pleased to have defended it with any
• 2:16:13
Speaker 10: terms of zeal, wanted the modesty to urge the thing
• 2:16:16
Speaker 10: held as a ceremony. Larissa teaches me what to believe.
• 2:16:20
Speaker 11: I'll die for it.
• 2:16:21
Speaker 10: But some woman had the ring.
• 2:16:23
Speaker 5: No, by my honor, madam, by my soul, no woman
• 2:16:27
Speaker 5: had it but a civil doctor, which did refuse three
• 2:16:31
Speaker 5: thousand ducads of being begged the ring, the which I
• 2:16:35
Speaker 5: did deny him, and suffered him to go displeased away,
• 2:16:40
Speaker 5: even he that had held the life of my dear friend.
• 2:16:44
Speaker 5: What should I say, sweet lady, I was enforced to
• 2:16:47
Speaker 5: send it after him. I was beset with shame and courtesy.
• 2:16:52
Speaker 5: My honor would not let ingratitude so much besmere it
• 2:16:57
Speaker 5: Pardon me, good lady, for by these blessed and candles
• 2:17:00
Speaker 5: of the night, had you been there, I think you
• 2:17:03
Speaker 5: would have begged the ring of me to give the
• 2:17:05
  Speaker 5: worthy doctor.
• 2:17:06
Speaker 10: Let not that doctor air come near my house. Since
• 2:17:09
Speaker 10: he hath got the jewel that I loved, and that
• 2:17:11
Speaker 10: which you did swear to keep from me. I will
• 2:17:14
Speaker 10: become as liberal as you. I'll not deny him anything.
• 2:17:17
Speaker 10: I have no not my body nor my husband's bed,
• 2:17:21
Speaker 10: know him. I shall, I am well sure of it.
• 2:17:23
Speaker 10: Lie not a knight from home, watch me like argus.
• 2:17:27
Speaker 4: If you do not.
• 2:17:28
Speaker 10: If I be left alone now by mine honor, which
• 2:17:31
Speaker 10: is yet mine own, I'll have that doctor for mine bedfellow, and.
• 2:17:34
Speaker 11: I, as clerk therefobe it well advised. How you do
• 2:17:37
Speaker 11: leave me to my own protection?
• 2:17:39
  Speaker 8: Well?
• 2:17:39
Speaker 7: Do you so let me not take him? Then? For
• 2:17:42
Speaker 7: if I do, I'll mar the young clerk's pen.
• 2:17:45
Speaker 2: I am the unhappy subject of these quarrels.
• 2:17:48
Speaker 10: Sir, grieve not you. You are welcome, notwithstanding.
• 2:17:52
Speaker 5: Porscha, forgive me this enforced wrong. And in the hearing
• 2:17:57
Speaker 5: of these many friends, I swear to even by thine
• 2:18:01
Speaker 5: own fair eyes, wherein I see myself.
• 2:18:05
Speaker 10: Mark you, but that in both my eyes he doubly
• 2:18:08
Speaker 10: sees himself in each eye. One swear by your double self.
• 2:18:12
Speaker 10: And there's an oath of credit.
• 2:18:14
Speaker 5: Nay, but hear me pardon this fault. And by my soul,
• 2:18:17
Speaker 5: I swear I never more will break an oath with
• 2:18:20
  Speaker 5: thee I.
• 2:18:21
Speaker 2: Once did lend my body for his wealth, which but
• 2:18:24
Speaker 2: for him that had your husband's ring, had quite miscarried.
• 2:18:28
Speaker 2: I dare be bound again my soul upon the forfeit
• 2:18:33
Speaker 2: that your lord will never more break faith advisedly.
• 2:18:39
Speaker 10: Then you shall be his surety. Give him this and
• 2:18:42
Speaker 10: bid him keep it better than the other.
• 2:18:44
Speaker 2: Here, Lord Bassanio, swear to keep this ring, by heaven.
• 2:18:51
Speaker 5: It is the same I.
• 2:18:52
Speaker 4: Gave the doctor I had it of him.
• 2:18:55
Speaker 10: Pardon me, Bassanio, for by this ring the doctor lay
• 2:18:58
  Speaker 10: with me.
• 2:19:00
Speaker 11: My gentle Graciano. By that same scrubbed boy, the doctor's
• 2:19:03
Speaker 11: clerk and lieu of this last night did lie with me.
• 2:19:06
  Speaker 8: Ah.
• 2:19:06
Speaker 7: Why this is like the mending of highways in summer,
• 2:19:10
Speaker 7: where the ways are fair enough?
• 2:19:12
Speaker 8: What are we cuckolds?
• 2:19:13
Speaker 7: There? We have deserved it?
• 2:19:15
Speaker 10: Speak not so grossly. You are all amazed. Here is
• 2:19:19
Speaker 10: a letter. Read it at your leisure. It comes from Padua,
• 2:19:22
Speaker 10: from Belario. There you shall find that Portio was the
• 2:19:26
Speaker 10: doctor Nerissa there her clerk Lorenzo here shall witness. I
• 2:19:30
Speaker 10: set forth as soon as you and even but now returned,
• 2:19:33
Speaker 10: I have not yet entered my house. Antonio. You are welcome,
• 2:19:37
Speaker 10: and I have better news in store for you than
• 2:19:39
Speaker 10: you expect. Unseal this letter. Soon there you shall find
• 2:19:43
Speaker 10: three of your argacies are richly come to harbor. Suddenly
• 2:19:46
Speaker 10: you shall not know by what strange accident I chance
• 2:19:49
Speaker 10: it on this letter.
• 2:19:50
Speaker 8: Ah, I am dumb.
• 2:19:54
Speaker 5: Were you the doctor and I knew you not?
• 2:19:59
Speaker 7: Were you the clerk that is to make me cuckold?
• 2:20:03
Speaker 11: Ay, but the clerk that never means to do it
• 2:20:05
Speaker 11: unless he live? And they be a man?
• 2:20:06
Speaker 5: Sweet doctor, you shall be my bedfellow when I am absent.
• 2:20:12
Speaker 5: Then lie with my wife.
• 2:20:13
Speaker 2: Sweet lady, you have given me life and living. For
• 2:20:18
Speaker 2: here I read for certain that my ships are safely
• 2:20:22
  Speaker 2: come to road.
• 2:20:23
Speaker 10: How now, Lorenzo, my clerk, hath some good comforts.
• 2:20:27
Speaker 11: Too for you, ay, and I'll give them him without
• 2:20:29
Speaker 11: a fee. Therefore, I to gift to you and Jessica
• 2:20:32
Speaker 11: from the rich Jew a special deed of gift after
• 2:20:35
Speaker 11: his death, of all he dies possessed.
• 2:20:37
Speaker 6: Of fair ladies. You drop mana in the way of
• 2:20:40
  Speaker 6: starved people.
• 2:20:42
Speaker 10: It is almost mourning. And yet I am sure you
• 2:20:45
Speaker 10: are not satisfied of these events at full. Let us
• 2:20:48
Speaker 10: go in and charge us there upon interrogatories, and we
• 2:20:51
Speaker 10: will answer all things faithfully.
• 2:20:54
Speaker 7: Let it be so. The first interrogatory that my Nerissa
• 2:20:58
Speaker 7: shall be sworn on is where till the next night
• 2:21:01
Speaker 7: she had rather stay or go to bed, now being
• 2:21:05
Speaker 7: two hours to day. But were the day come, I
• 2:21:08
Speaker 7: should wish it dark till I were couching with the
• 2:21:11
Speaker 7: doctor's clerk. Well, while I live, I'll fear no other
• 2:21:16
Speaker 7: thing so sore as keeping safe Nerissa's ring excient end
• 2:21:22
  Speaker 7: of Act five
