- 7:24Then they sang karaoke, but that didn't last too long. Finally,
- 7:28they rowed a boat. Nothing was as fun as Daisy hoped.
- 7:32Why am I being such a grump? Will I make
- 7:36yaya grumpy? Two six days until the new year. Yea
- 7:40ya took Daisy to his favorite restaurant. Yea Yea slurpt
- 7:45and burned. Daisy wanted to smile, but she didn't. Ah,
- 7:50yelled Daisy. She pointed to the fishhead, then chop eh
- 7:56yay yay grumbled at not. Yea Yea said fun Gael.
- 8:02Daisy should have slept, but again she didn't. There were
- 8:05too many sights to see. Five days until the new year.
- 8:10Daisy couldn't get rid of the grumps, not even while

- 9:45up and down. One day until the New Year, Daisy
- 9:48ate and ate, and danced and danced. By the time
- 9:52she went to bed, she finally felt jolly again. On
- 9:55New Year's Day, Daisy stretched her arms. She smelled something
- 9:59sweet like tangy oranges, as well as something steamy like zomzy.
- 10:05Something sizzled dumplings fresh from the walk. The breezy air
- 10:08buzzed with jingles and jangles and jovial voices. Oh no,

- 10:40wa said ya ya ten night, eight, seven, six, five,
- 10:45four three two one. Happy New Year, cheered Daisy, celebrating
- 10:53the Lunar New Year. From the author growing up, the
- 10:56only thing that made me grumpy about Lunar New Year
- 10:59was that I had to clean my room. Actually, having
- 11:02clean up still makes me grumpy, but everything else about
- 11:05celebrating the New Year was full of joy and most
- 11:07importantly family. I grew up in a big, big Cantonese
- 11:12and English speaking Chinese American family, and we were always
- 11:16eating or thinking about eating food. My Yaya would begin
- 11:20the New year's food preparations the days leaning up to
- 11:23the first night of Lunar New Year. The whole house
- 11:26was a buzz with sizzling, slashing, stirring stuff and sweet
- 11:30and salty smells. When it was finally midnight of the
- 11:33first night of the New Year, my family would gather
- 11:36around our kitchen table for a feast of long noodles, fish,
- 11:40sweet rice cakes, snowball soup, and various types of dumplings,
- 11:45including my favorite fried Giaze, which is shredded cabbage with
- 11:57pork and or shrimp and it has soy sauce and
- 12:03sesame oil. Our next story is titled The Lunar New
- 12:11Year's Surprise and it was published by Soaring Kite Books
- 12:16has a copyright year of twenty twenty three and it
- 12:19was written by Jade Wang. Knock Knock Knock, may may
- 12:24wake up and get dressed. It's the first day of
- 12:27the Lunar New Year. It's the biggest, yummiest, noisiest celebration
- 12:31of the year. New clothes signify a fresh start to
- 12:35the year. They are read a color to symbolized good luck.
- 12:38This new year is going to be the best one yet,
- 12:41because I have a special surprise for May May. Isn't
- 12:45my new dress beautiful? Gegee? May May cheers for the
- 12:51Lunar New Year. Everything must be new and clean. After
- 12:54we clean the whole house, we fold red paper in
- 12:57half in fancy paper cuts as decorations that bring happiness
- 13:02and good blessings. Then, out of May May's sight, I
- 13:05work on her special gift surprise. There's something I wanted
- 13:10you to see, May May. I uncover the gift box,
- 13:13but May May runs downstairs before I can show her.
- 13:19I crocheted a Chinese line as a gift for May May.
- 13:22It's made with a lot of different yarn colors and
- 13:25more stitches than I can count. Nay Ny who thought
- 13:31who taught me how to crochet, is the only person
- 13:33who knows about my top secret project. Our code name
- 13:37for the doll is Lucky, since traditionally lion dances bring
- 13:41good luck. I took Lucky inside my vest and follow
- 13:45may may wait up seeing name Kwali bye bye and
- 13:52Ma must say together Happy Lunar New Year to you.
- 13:56Happy Lunar New Year. We cheer, I'm careful to squish
- 14:00Lucky as we hug Mama plants kisses on our cheeks.
- 14:05You two look great in your new outfits. Now off
- 14:07to ya yay in Nayna's house to celebrate. We arrive
- 14:12at ya Ya and Nayne's home with a basket of
- 14:15juicy red apples gone gone Nae home. We say, we
- 14:22wish ya yay nay nay a happy, healthy, peaceful and
- 14:26blessed new year. Yay yay na Nae pull us into
- 14:30warm hugs. Here is your y'all, sweet kwan for your
- 14:34piggy bank, Naynae says with a smile. We take the
- 14:38envelopes of lucky money with both hands and bow our
- 14:41heads to show respectful gratitude. I noticed Lucky's arms sticking
- 14:47out from my collar and quickly tuck him inside my vest.
- 14:50Thank you, Yaya and na nay yay yay na Nay
- 14:54lead us all to the altar in the living room.
- 14:57Nane carefully places a plate of colorful fruit from the
- 15:00photos of our great grandparents and other ancestors. Our descendants
- 15:05are here to wish you well for the new year,
- 15:07said yeah, yeay, giving us each a burning incense stick.
- 15:11We hold our incense sticks with both hands, bow again
- 15:15to pay respect to our ancestors, and then place our
- 15:18sticks in the incense holder. Crack, crack, crack, it's the
- 15:24lion's dance. Let's go, Bob bob cheers. We join the
- 15:28festivities outside, clapping and cheering as the lion romps and
- 15:32dances up the street. The lion dance is my favorite.
- 15:36But why is it always so loud? Maybe as while
- 15:39covering our ears, the noise of beating drums, cymbals, and
- 15:43gom synchronized with the lion's movements. It's loud to show
- 15:47how powerful the lion is, said Mama as she squeezes
- 15:51Ma Mae's hand. The lion dances to chase away ghosts
- 15:54and evil spirits too. Look, may may I made you
- 15:58your own? I start to say, But may may can
- 16:01hear me over the commotion? Time to eat, Mom says,
- 16:05while motioning us back inside. Yay, yay, nay nay, Please
- 16:10have a seat, I respectfully pull out their chairs while
- 16:13may Mae sets the dining table. Coming through, Mama announces
- 16:18holding a large plate of dumplings. Bye bye, follows with
- 16:22a steaming fish, and I bring the crispy spring roast.
- 16:26Pretty soon, a spread of colorful, yummy dishes fills the
- 16:31entire table. Mama tells us what she made and why
- 16:35each is important to eat on the lunar New Year.
- 16:39Noodles for mom life and happiness, dumplings for wealth, steam
- 16:43fish for abundance, spring rose for a fresh start, stewed
- 16:47mustard greens for longevity, tangerines for good luck, apples for peace,

- 16:58with work and money. I wish I could eat these
- 17:01foods every day. Me Me giggles. They are extra special.
- 17:06On the New Year, we express thanks for the help
- 17:12we received over the year. Thank you Mama for putting
- 17:14together this amazing meal and for always being our biggest cheerleader.
- 17:19I chime in. We congratulate each person at the table
- 17:22for the happy and proud moments they had last year.
- 17:26Congratulations for making the soccer team. As Mimi, we talk
- 17:31about plans, trips, and celebrations for the new year. We
- 17:34also share stories and legends, such as the twelve Chinese
- 17:38zodiac animals that represent each year. After our meal, by
- 17:43Bye places bright red firecrackers on the ground in front
- 17:46of our house, standing them up like candles. Maybe and
- 17:50I take turns using incense sticks to light the firecrackers.
- 17:55One by one. They explode with loud cracks and rising
- 17:59white smoke. The noise will surely scare away evil spirits.
- 18:04Pop Pop pop. Finally, my opportunity is here, and I
- 18:07take Lucky out once more. May May I know how
- 18:10much you like seeing the lion each year? So I
- 18:13made you this little guy. Wow, he's so cute and
- 18:17small and quiet too. She squeals. I love him so much.
