- 0:05Hey, everyone.
- 0:06Welcome back
- 0:06to Mostly Together.
- 0:08All right.
- 0:09I've been thinking
- 0:09a lot lately about time
- 0:11and really,
- 0:13our relationship with time.
- 0:15And these last few weeks
- 0:17have been almost a blur.
- 0:19I mean, a lot of fun, great
- 0:20things have been happening,
- 0:21but just one thing
- 0:22after another.
- 0:24Between events and podcast
- 0:26recordings and meaningful
- 0:28projects going on, family
- 0:30activities between the kids,
- 0:31sports, kids, school stuff
- 0:33and everything in between.
- 0:34I mean, Christmas is coming
- 0:36like we are in late
- 0:37October right now.
- 0:38There are
- 0:39Christmas decorations
- 0:40already in the stores,
- 0:41which I really
- 0:42hate, by the way.
- 0:43But you know,
- 0:43with all of these
- 0:44packed schedules,
- 0:46I'm really grateful for them.
- 0:47And they can be
- 0:48it can be an exciting season
- 0:50and all the opportunities
- 0:51that these events
- 0:52and these items bring.
- 0:54And I've also noticed
- 0:55something interesting,
- 0:56and that is
- 0:57when I'm enjoying
- 0:58a quiet moment,
- 0:59which sometimes comes few
- 1:01and far between.
- 1:02I feel like there's like
- 1:03a nagging thought
- 1:04that I could be
- 1:05doing something else,
- 1:06and I really despise that.
- 1:08And I don't know
- 1:09if that's the same for you,
- 1:11but I have this moment
- 1:12where nothing is going on.
- 1:13I have a moment of peace,
- 1:15and for some reason,
- 1:15I can't just, like,
- 1:17be in that moment
- 1:18and do nothing
- 1:19and think of nothing.
- 1:20I'm thinking about the emails
- 1:22that I still have to
- 1:23check or my inboxes.
- 1:25Something I should be
- 1:27probably sharing
- 1:27on social media,
- 1:29or I should be
- 1:30tackling another item
- 1:31on that list
- 1:31that I have on the table
- 1:32with all the other lists.
- 1:34Or maybe,
- 1:35you know, the laundry
- 1:36or something around the house
- 1:37that I should be
- 1:38keeping up with.
- 1:40I feel like
- 1:40there's constantly something
- 1:42that I need to be doing.
- 1:43So I want to know,
- 1:45when do we start treating
- 1:46every available minute
- 1:48as time
- 1:49that needs to be filled?
- 1:50And I feel like I've been
- 1:51operating like that
- 1:52as long as I can remember.
- 1:54I love being busy
- 1:55and doing things,
- 1:56don't get me wrong,
- 1:57and that has always been
- 1:58my trajectory.
- 2:00But I want to
- 2:02also be doing things
- 2:03that are meaningful to me.
- 2:04And I'm realizing
- 2:05as I'm getting older,
- 2:07part of the meaning in
- 2:08these moments
- 2:09is not doing anything at all.
- 2:11I'm realizing how important
- 2:13those little moments are,
- 2:15and those in-between moments
- 2:16that I have in between point
- 2:18A and point B,
- 2:19I got to really reevaluate
- 2:21how I'm going to tackle them.
- 2:23I should not be wasting
- 2:24those five minutes of peace
- 2:25thinking about an email
- 2:26or an inbox message
- 2:27I need to get back to.
- 2:29And I'm wondering like,
- 2:30why do we feel this pressure
- 2:32to make something
- 2:33of every single
- 2:34one of these moments?
- 2:36You know,
- 2:36I know that
- 2:37we live in a world
- 2:38where we are encouraged
- 2:39to constantly
- 2:40share what we are doing.
- 2:42This is
- 2:42literally what
- 2:43we are doing now.
- 2:44We are sharing something
- 2:45with all of you,
- 2:46whether you're watching
- 2:47or you're listening.
- 2:48And if you had a
- 2:49great experience,
- 2:50what do we do?
- 2:51We post about it.
- 2:52You know,
- 2:53if you attended an event,
- 2:55what do we do?
- 2:55We want to share the photos.
- 2:57And if you
- 2:58accomplish something,
- 2:59you want to make sure
- 3:00people know, right?
- 3:02How often do you log on
- 3:03to LinkedIn
- 3:03and see all of these
- 3:05celebratory
- 3:06messages and posts?
- 3:09Which is great.
- 3:10Again, it's great
- 3:11that we are going
- 3:13to these mediums and sharing
- 3:15and celebrating,
- 3:16but do we have to be doing it
- 3:18every second, or
- 3:19how much of your free
- 3:21time is spent thinking,
- 3:22oh, I
- 3:23probably should do this.
- 3:24So I feel like
- 3:25social media has created
- 3:27these amazing opportunities
- 3:29for for us to share.
- 3:30For entrepreneurs,
- 3:31for businesses,
- 3:32for creators,
- 3:33for communities.
- 3:34But I'm also seeing
- 3:34firsthand that
- 3:36I think that we're sometimes
- 3:37thinking about
- 3:38how something is going to
- 3:39look online
- 3:40before we're even finished
- 3:42experiencing the thing.
- 3:44It's almost like
- 3:45we're creating
- 3:45these secondhand experiences
- 3:47when we're really supposed
- 3:48to be there
- 3:48for the first
- 3:49hand experiences.
- 3:50Here's an example.
- 3:51How often
- 3:52have you been
- 3:53to an event
- 3:55or a concert
- 3:57and or a wedding?
- 3:58We just
- 3:59went to a wedding last week
- 4:00and there are
- 4:01phones in the air,
- 4:03and everyone is trying
- 4:04to capture
- 4:04the very same thing.
- 4:05Newsflash it's captured.
- 4:08You're there.
- 4:09We went to see John Mayer
- 4:10and it was just a
- 4:12sea of phones.
- 4:13I mean, people are recording.
- 4:14It feels like the whole show
- 4:16and that
- 4:17is completely changed
- 4:18the experience.
- 4:19I think of how we consume
- 4:21these interactive, real life,
- 4:23firsthand things.
- 4:25And I'm I'm just
- 4:26feeling like
- 4:27we are subtly changing
- 4:29the way
- 4:29that we experience
- 4:30things in life.
- 4:31And I think we kind of
- 4:32got to check
- 4:33some things at the door
- 4:34is something less meaningful
- 4:36because nobody sees it.
- 4:37Why did you do
- 4:38the thing in the first place?
- 4:39Did you do it
- 4:39because you wanted to do it,
- 4:41or did you do it
- 4:41because you wanted to prove
- 4:42or show
- 4:43someone that you did it?
- 4:44And sometimes it could be
- 4:45a little bit of both.
- 4:46I understand that, you know,
- 4:47we can kind of dip our toes
- 4:49into both of those worlds,
- 4:51but just because something
- 4:53isn't shared
- 4:55doesn't mean
- 4:56it's not happening.
- 4:57And this really busy season
- 5:00that we are in right
- 5:00now, personally,
- 5:01professionally,
- 5:03in my household,
- 5:04I'm realizing I'm
- 5:06starting to
- 5:08not fill some of this time
- 5:10with posting and proving.
- 5:12It's almost like once
- 5:13you get into the habit
- 5:14of doing that
- 5:15and once you have a business
- 5:17right, or a show,
- 5:18obviously
- 5:19you're posting,
- 5:20you're keeping up
- 5:20with things,
- 5:21you have sponsorships,
- 5:22you have all of these
- 5:23things in play
- 5:24that you are keeping up with.
- 5:26But then the moments
- 5:27where I should have dedicated
- 5:29just to myself or my family,
- 5:31I shouldn't be thinking
- 5:32about trying
- 5:32to fill that space
- 5:33with more things to post.
- 5:35Again,
- 5:36this is all my
- 5:36personal experience
- 5:38being in TV for years.
- 5:39I understand metrics,
- 5:41so we're talking
- 5:41about ratings,
- 5:42audience engagement, reach,
- 5:44you know, that kind of thing.
- 5:45Delivering content.
- 5:47Today, nearly
- 5:48everyone has access
- 5:49to their own version
- 5:50of a ratings report, right?
- 5:52You can literally
- 5:54go on to Instagram
- 5:55or Facebook or YouTube
- 5:56and draw up a report
- 5:57to see how many
- 5:58likes, shares,
- 6:00you know,
- 6:01the metrics
- 6:02of whatever you are posting.
- 6:04You can get that report
- 6:05in your hands in two seconds.
- 6:07But to what end?
- 6:08What do we do with
- 6:09that information?
- 6:11And I listen,
- 6:12I know that
- 6:12those metrics
- 6:13can be super helpful
- 6:14when it comes,
- 6:15especially when it comes
- 6:15to building a business.
- 6:16That's
- 6:17what we're
- 6:17discovering as well.
- 6:18But what I'm also
- 6:19realizing is numbers
- 6:21don't tell the whole story.
- 6:22One genuine connection
- 6:24or meaningful conversation
- 6:26or opportunity
- 6:28might be worth
- 6:30far more
- 6:30than one of impressions
- 6:32that you get on a post,
- 6:33and I think that we have
- 6:34more ways than ever
- 6:36to measure engagement.
- 6:38But how
- 6:39do we measure the meaning?
- 6:42There is so
- 6:42much meaning behind what
- 6:44people are posting.
- 6:45How do we measure that?
- 6:46How do we put
- 6:47a number on that?
- 6:48You know, we
- 6:49we can get almost anything
- 6:50instantaneously.
- 6:52It's that
- 6:52instant gratification.
- 6:53We can get entertainment,
- 6:55we can get shopping,
- 6:56we can get feedback.
- 6:57Even communication
- 6:58has changed.
- 7:00We send a message
- 7:01and we often expect
- 7:02an immediate response.
- 7:03That is something else
- 7:04that's really been
- 7:05hanging me up lately.
- 7:07I had that,
- 7:08like dopamine hit.
- 7:09I'd get a text message,
- 7:11I have a bunch of group
- 7:12messages going,
- 7:13and I'm realizing
- 7:14now I'm really struggling
- 7:15keeping up
- 7:16with all these personal
- 7:17group messages.
- 7:18And I think that
- 7:20when I was responding
- 7:22immediately,
- 7:23the more space
- 7:24that actually took up
- 7:25in my real life
- 7:26lived experiences,
- 7:28and I'm realizing that
- 7:30not everything
- 7:32meaningful
- 7:33has to happen quickly.
- 7:35And I think some
- 7:36of the best things
- 7:37take time
- 7:39and consistency
- 7:40and patience
- 7:41without any
- 7:42immediate feedback.
- 7:44And not every meaningful
- 7:46moment comes with,
- 7:47you know,
- 7:48this instant feedback.
- 7:49You know,
- 7:49sometimes the value
- 7:50of something
- 7:51doesn't reveal itself
- 7:52until much later.
- 7:54So here's the big challenge
- 7:55that I am going
- 7:56to impart on you,
- 7:58and that I'm also going to
- 7:59take on.
- 7:59Be more selective about what
- 8:01deserves your attention.
- 8:03That doesn't mean
- 8:03that you can't be driven or
- 8:05disciplined and intentional
- 8:06while you're doing this.
- 8:08It means you're
- 8:09kind of protecting
- 8:09more of your personal time.
- 8:11And I think
- 8:11just by way of the world now
- 8:14and technology,
- 8:15it's harder and harder
- 8:16to protect
- 8:17that personal time,
- 8:18you know,
- 8:19technology and social media,
- 8:20as I said, they can be great
- 8:22avenues and tools
- 8:24when they're used
- 8:25with a purpose.
- 8:26But I think being present
- 8:27isn't about
- 8:28disconnecting completely.
- 8:30It's about knowing
- 8:31when to connect
- 8:32and then when to
- 8:33put your phone down
- 8:34and walk away
- 8:35for a little while.
- 8:36And I'm not necessarily
- 8:38trying to make a goal
- 8:39of doing less of everything,
- 8:41because frankly,
- 8:43I feel like
- 8:43things are really
- 8:44just starting to ramp up now.
- 8:46I'm getting busier
- 8:46in a good way,
- 8:48but I'm trying to be
- 8:49more selective about, again,
- 8:51what deserves my attention
- 8:53and the things that
- 8:54I genuinely love.
- 8:55And I also
- 8:56don't want to be losing
- 8:57sight of what I'm doing
- 8:59and why I'm doing them
- 9:00in the first place.
- 9:01If anything,
- 9:02now that I'm out on my own,
- 9:03I'm even more motivated to do
- 9:04the things that I want to do.
- 9:06But I'm also trying
- 9:07to tell myself
- 9:08that not everything has
- 9:09to become something else.
- 9:11And not every experience
- 9:12needs to become content.
- 9:14You know,
- 9:14not every quiet moment
- 9:16that I'm given
- 9:18needs to
- 9:19become more productive.
- 9:20I can just kind of sit in it
- 9:22and not check an email
- 9:23or not post something
- 9:25or not scroll.
- 9:26And I don't think
- 9:28every meaningful
- 9:28part of our lives
- 9:30needs an audience.
- 9:31We can be ambitious
- 9:33and we can be present.
- 9:34We can be proud of the things
- 9:36that we're building,
- 9:37but we can also enjoy life
- 9:40while we're
- 9:41building those things.
- 9:42So whatever
- 9:42you're doing today,
- 9:44I hope that you are finding
- 9:46five minutes of peace
- 9:47and finding a little bit
- 9:48more room for
- 9:50being more selective
- 9:51about the things
- 9:52that you think
- 9:53deserve your attention.
- 9:55So take what you need.
- 9:56Leave the rest
- 9:57and I'll see you next week.
