- 0:48Hello, and welcome to the Becker's Health Care
- 0:49podcast.
- 0:50I'm joined today by Eric Cannon, chief pharmacy
- 0:53officer and general manager at SelectHealth and Scripius.
- 0:56Can you start by telling us a little
- 0:58bit about yourself and your organization?
- 1:00Yeah. You bet. I'm a pharmacist by background
- 1:02and training.
- 1:03SelectHealth
- 1:04is the payer arm of Intermountain Healthcare,
- 1:08and Scripius is the PBM subsidiary
- 1:11of SelectHealth.
- 1:13So I started my career. I've been in
- 1:15this role now since
- 1:171997,
- 1:18and we created
- 1:21the backbone
- 1:22of the PBM, which is Scripius
- 1:24today in 1998.
- 1:27Okay. So from improving member experience and expanding
- 1:30value based care to controlling costs,
- 1:32payer executives have ambitious goals for the rest
- 1:35of 2024 and the year ahead. In your
- 1:37role, what would you say is your top
- 1:39priority, and how are you planning to get
- 1:40there?
- 1:42Yeah. Right now,
- 1:43our our top priority is additional growth
- 1:46within Scripius. And I think
- 1:49a lot of that's driven by how we
- 1:51take care of our members. A lot of
- 1:52that's driven by how we take care of
- 1:54our customers.
- 1:55And and what is that experience we want
- 1:57people to have, both
- 2:00for for the member themselves and and for
- 2:02the client or the payer or, you know,
- 2:04the employer that may whichever it may be.
- 2:07So at an industry level, how would you
- 2:09describe the biggest barriers to effectively serving and
- 2:12engaging members?
- 2:13And, what opportunities do you see for large
- 2:15scale improvements, and how are you applying them
- 2:17in your current strategies?
- 2:20You know, it's a fascinating question. I think,
- 2:23you know, there's there's several barriers in in
- 2:25what I do
- 2:26within the PBM industry. The lack of transparency
- 2:29is massive. Mhmm. And I think
- 2:32we've we've tried to move in a direction
- 2:34where we've always owned all the paper.
- 2:37So we contract directly with the manufacturers.
- 2:41We can show people exactly what the contract
- 2:43is, unlike
- 2:45most of our competitors where those contracts are
- 2:47actually held
- 2:49offshore in,
- 2:50you know, Europe. Mhmm. So I think that's
- 2:53the first piece is how do we how
- 2:54do we bring transparency? How do we allow
- 2:56transparency
- 2:57to help drive costs down by letting people
- 2:59see the full picture? The second is that
- 3:01member experience piece. And I think when we
- 3:03talk about barriers and member experience, especially when
- 3:06we're talking about pharmacy,
- 3:08we have to acknowledge that there's a lot
- 3:10wrong
- 3:11today in the retail pharmacy space. I think
- 3:13we see Walgreens and CVS
- 3:16taking drastic steps, closing stores, trying to
- 3:19improve their financial picture. At the same time,
- 3:22that experience that members have at the pharmacy
- 3:26is not great. We saw a decrease this
- 3:28year in, rating of the drug plan. And
- 3:31as we really drilled into that, it wasn't
- 3:33anything that specifically we were doing.
- 3:36It had everything to do with the member's
- 3:38experience of the pharmacy, the inability to talk
- 3:40to a pharmacist, the need to stand in
- 3:42great big lines,
- 3:43not feeling
- 3:45like like you're important.
- 3:47All of those things have had a negative
- 3:48impact on members.
- 3:50So keeping in mind today's dynamic health care
- 3:53landscape,
- 3:54what's one piece of advice you'd share with
- 3:56other leaders in the industry to help grow
- 3:58their businesses while keeping members top of mind?
- 4:00It's an interesting question. And then, you know,
- 4:02I remember talking to an executive at a
- 4:04health plan,
- 4:064 or 5 years ago and
- 4:09made made the comment that it was super
- 4:11important
- 4:12to focus on the member the member experience.
- 4:15And he was adamant that you could not
- 4:18improve member experience
- 4:20and also decrease costs.
- 4:22I I think I disagree with that. I
- 4:24I if we look at at our business
- 4:26today, we've actually, as a result of having
- 4:28a negative 20% trend in pharmacy,
- 4:31been able to reduce
- 4:34what consumers will pay on the individual exchange
- 4:36for their insurance this year.
- 4:38So with the election last night, I think
- 4:41we really saw how important the economy is
- 4:43to people. And so every step that we
- 4:46take, I think, to reduce what they have
- 4:48to pay is a step towards improving the
- 4:51experience they have. Mhmm. And and then that
- 4:54that experience, you can't you can't have a
- 4:55good experience without coordination between
- 4:58your your
- 5:00health care delivery partners.
- 5:02So what role is technology playing in your
- 5:05organization's growth strategies? And can you share a
- 5:07couple examples?
- 5:09Yeah. You bet. I I think,
- 5:11a, we're we're in a situation where
- 5:14it's harder and harder to to hire frontline
- 5:17employees, and and it's even harder to retain
- 5:19them once you've hired them. Mhmm. So how
- 5:22do we look at AI? How do we
- 5:23look at the digital tools that we need
- 5:25to have in place that actually
- 5:28put us in a situation where we don't
- 5:29have to add employees to improve our customer
- 5:32service. I I think that's the first one.
- 5:34The second one is how do we put
- 5:35the power of information in the hands of
- 5:37our our members, our consumers?
- 5:40And, you know, we're in the process right
- 5:42now of rolling out a tool that'll allow
- 5:44members to have their physician send their prescription
- 5:46to their wallet.
- 5:48Once that prescription gets to their wallet,
- 5:50they can then look at all the pharmacy
- 5:52alternatives that they have, what they'll pay at
- 5:54the different pharmacies,
- 5:56what those options are. Is it mail?
- 5:58Do they have to drive down the street?
- 6:00And then they can shop and pick where
- 6:01they wanna go for the lowest cost.
- 6:04On top of that, then they're able to
- 6:05see what coupons or discounts or other things
- 6:08may be available in the market, and they
- 6:10can stack that on top of that.
- 6:12So really, our goal is to say, you
- 6:15know, we're moving towards e commerce.
- 6:17We see that happening more and more. You
- 6:19look at the pharmacies that are growing. It's
- 6:21Mark Cuban's Cost Plus. It's Amazon. Mhmm. People
- 6:24really want that ecommerce experience. So how do
- 6:27we engage that member with the digital tools
- 6:29they need to make those decisions?
- 6:32So how is technology,
- 6:34supporting value based care or member focused initiative
- 6:36at your organization? And, you know, what excites
- 6:38you most here and why?
- 6:40Well,
- 6:41we we talked about putting Mhmm. Information in
- 6:43front of the member. Right. Right. I I
- 6:45think it's it's also crucial that I'm putting
- 6:47information in front of the physician. Mhmm. And
- 6:49so how do I coordinate with those medical
- 6:52directors,
- 6:53those medical officers that may
- 6:56be over those physicians in their clinics? And
- 6:58then how do we make sure that we've
- 7:00put the digital tools out there in terms
- 7:02of electronic prior authorization, real time benefit check?
- 7:05Are we taking the steps to make sure
- 7:07that it's easily accessible within the EMR? I
- 7:10think we we've had an experience with one
- 7:12client who's on Cerner,
- 7:14and the physicians won't use it because it
- 7:16is so cumbersome to actually find the real
- 7:18time benefit check within the system. And so
- 7:21how do how do we make sure that
- 7:22all of those pieces are in place? It
- 7:24has to be easy.
- 7:26Well, Eric, thank you so much again for
- 7:27joining us today on the show. But before
- 7:29I let you go, is there any final
- 7:30thoughts you'd like to leave with our listeners?
- 7:32Yeah. I think I think the one thing
- 7:34that we've really learned is as we've brought
- 7:36on clients, as we improve transparency,
- 7:39we're seeing improvements in in the cost profile.
- 7:42We're seeing improvements in that experience that the
- 7:45members actually have. And so, you know, the
- 7:48model that we've tried to build upon, which
- 7:50is total and complete transparency,
- 7:53is really helping to drive and improve the
- 7:56financials and and drive and improve that that
- 7:58member experience.
- 8:00Awesome. Well, thank you again for joining us
- 8:02today, Eric, and I hope you have a
- 8:03great rest of your day. Hey. Thank you.
