- 2:18Speaker 7: We'll give you more details on all of.
- 2:19Speaker 6: That, but anyway, Roger will join us to talk about
- 2:21Speaker 6: the high school football weekend, college football, and Texas women's
- 2:24Speaker 6: and men's basketball that will be coming up at the
- 2:26Speaker 6: three o'clock hour. We have Inconceivable coming up in a
- 2:29Speaker 6: few minutes. You know, this is we're getting to what
- 2:33Speaker 6: is it, cam that they call it feast week when
- 2:35Speaker 6: they get right there, a college basketball when they have
- 2:37Speaker 6: the Maui Tournament, all that stuff. Yeah, this is the
- 2:39Speaker 6: feast season for Inconceivable. Oh, there's lots of feast stuff
- 2:44Speaker 6: to get to, So we'll get to that coming up
- 2:46Speaker 6: in a few moments. But I know folks are have
- 2:50Speaker 6: quite an appetite for Texas Arkansas this weekend. Here earlier today,
- 2:55Speaker 6: just a little while ago, the Weekly Media Assume final
- 2:59Speaker 6: opportunity for the media visit with the head football coach
- 3:01Speaker 6: at the University of Texas, the Longhorn Weekly Media Zoom
- 3:04Speaker 6: with Coach Sark.
- 3:06Speaker 7: You know, going on the road, hostile environment.
- 3:09Speaker 8: We continue to find different ways to find out about
- 3:12Speaker 8: our team, and this is gonna be another great test
- 3:14Speaker 8: for us, especially coming off the last week's game. I
- 3:17Speaker 8: thought we got a lot of confidence. But with that
- 3:21Speaker 8: confidence came a work ethic that I that I saw
- 3:23Speaker 8: this week. I was really proud of our team, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 8: and I've told them that every day. With the intent,
- 3:28Speaker 8: the urgency, the physicality that we practice with this week,
- 3:32Speaker 8: that's going to be needed again. Super impressive with with
- 3:35Speaker 8: them for that, but knowing and we got a heck
- 3:38Speaker 8: of a challenge here Saturday on the road eleven am.
- 3:40Speaker 7: Kick and so we've got to be ready to go. Great,
- 3:44Speaker 7: thanks coach. We'll go ahead and go to some questions.
- 3:46Speaker 7: Start with Thomas Jones, Good morning, Sark.
- 3:51Speaker 9: You know, considering Tailing Green's unique skill set, is he
- 3:54Speaker 9: the most dangerous quarterback or defenses face this year?
- 3:57Speaker 8: I would I would say so, you know, I mean
- 3:59Speaker 8: it's one to have the running ability and the throwing ability,
- 4:02Speaker 8: but it's the size factor as well. You know, I
- 4:05Speaker 8: think he's sixty six, probably close to two hundred and
- 4:07Speaker 8: forty pounds, and so his ability to get out of
- 4:10Speaker 8: the pocket, extend plays then uses legs. I think the
- 4:14Speaker 8: scheme really helps. So I think coach Petrino, Coach Pittman
- 4:17Speaker 8: do a great job of giving them the design quarterback
- 4:20Speaker 8: runs the zone read stuff. But then also the pro
- 4:23Speaker 8: style passing game is very taxing, and so he poses
- 4:27Speaker 8: a heck of a challenge for us more than Steve.
- 4:30Speaker 10: I've actually got two questions for you now, I'm just
- 4:32Speaker 10: kidding John.
- 4:32Speaker 7: Only one today.
- 4:35Speaker 10: Well, that's pretty good, No, Steve, in your career, just
- 4:41Speaker 10: did some research. Believe you've only twice you've had six
- 4:45Speaker 10: receivers catch twenty passes or more.
- 4:47Speaker 7: This year you have seven. You're on the verge of having.
- 4:49Speaker 10: An eighth probably by the time the real season ends.
- 4:52Speaker 10: What does that say to you just about the ball
- 4:53Speaker 10: distribution factor of this offense?
- 4:55Speaker 7: As I say, I mean anything at all? Or am I
- 4:57Speaker 7: just making too much of that sad? No, I don't
- 4:59Speaker 7: think so. I I think that's fair.
- 5:01Speaker 8: You know, that was something we had talked about on
- 5:03Speaker 8: here at the beginning of the season, that we wanted
- 5:06Speaker 8: to play more wide receivers. We wanted to have a
- 5:10Speaker 8: better rotation, we wanted to have more depth, We wanted
- 5:12Speaker 8: to utilize these guys because they'd earned the opportunities. And
- 5:16Speaker 8: the fact that the numbers are starting to bear that out,
- 5:18Speaker 8: I think is a good thing. We've got a lot
- 5:20Speaker 8: of trust in these guys and their ability to go
- 5:23Speaker 8: make plays, whether it's our wide receiving corps obviously, what
- 5:27Speaker 8: Gunner's been doing at tight end, and what our running
- 5:29Speaker 8: backs are doing catching the ball out of the backfield.
- 5:31Speaker 8: I think the distribution of the ball is healthy, especially
- 5:35Speaker 8: when the when the ball is getting distributed and those
- 5:37Speaker 8: guys are going and making plays with the ball in
- 5:39Speaker 8: their hands. And so so far, so good. You know,
- 5:42Speaker 8: the plan going into the season is working.
- 5:45Speaker 11: Coach, good afternoon. So I was wondering if you would
- 5:47Speaker 11: take us into that lot, to your locker room just
- 5:50Speaker 11: before the game starts, before you walk out onto the
- 5:53Speaker 11: tunnel going on the field, what is your message to
- 5:56Speaker 11: the team? You know, I picture you as that Kurt Russell,
- 5:59Speaker 11: you know, given the speech. But what's your speech to
- 6:02Speaker 11: the team before that game?
- 6:04Speaker 8: I'm not sure when you're referring to Kurt Russell. That
- 6:07Speaker 8: must be out of a movie that Yeah, the.
- 6:09Speaker 11: Great moments are born with great opportunities of hockey.
- 6:12Speaker 8: Yeah, got it, Okay, got it. You know I'm not
- 6:16Speaker 8: very long winded. First of all, in the locker room,
- 6:19Speaker 8: I really have my speech with the team about the
- 6:23Speaker 8: game the day before the night before and depending on
- 6:27Speaker 8: a home game or away game, when that happens, and
- 6:29Speaker 8: I try to walk them through the game in that
- 6:31Speaker 8: moment in the locker room, you know, we do a
- 6:36Speaker 8: lot of schematic work before we take the field, offense, defense,
- 6:39Speaker 8: special teams, and we reminders and tips and different things
- 6:43Speaker 8: like that, and then really the moment before we go
- 6:45Speaker 8: take the field, it's kind of like everybody's just excited,
- 6:49Speaker 8: and so I'm not a long winded guy. I may
- 6:52Speaker 8: talk for about thirty to forty five seconds, and then
- 6:54Speaker 8: we go take the field.
- 6:55Speaker 7: You know, I feel like if we're not.
- 6:57Speaker 8: Ready to play at that moment, we're probably in trouble anyway.
- 6:59Speaker 8: So I kind of just get them a little fired
- 7:02Speaker 8: up and then we go take the field.
- 7:05Speaker 7: Steve, I had a schedule question.
- 7:07Speaker 12: You guys played the defending national champs on the road,
- 7:10Speaker 12: and you joined what it's supposed to be the hardest
- 7:12Speaker 12: conference in America. Why is there this national growing storyline
- 7:18Speaker 12: that somehow you guys aren't deserving of your ranking.
- 7:22Speaker 8: I don't given CFP, I'm not certain. Honestly, I don't
- 7:27Speaker 8: pay attention to that stuff.
- 7:28Speaker 7: You know.
- 7:29Speaker 8: All I know is we play the teams that are
- 7:31Speaker 8: in front of us, and they're they're good, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 8: So I don't know if people don't think they're good
- 7:36Speaker 8: or not. That's not for me to decide, you know.
- 7:38Speaker 8: We just try to play our best football that we can.
- 7:40Speaker 13: Hey, Steve, when when you're facing an offense that has
- 7:45Speaker 13: a dynamic receiver like like Armstrong for for Arkansas, how
- 7:48Speaker 13: do you kind of con sensualize I guess making sure
- 7:52Speaker 13: he doesn't pop off without unbalancing your defense in doing that.
- 7:58Speaker 8: Yeah, No, I think that we have to trust our players.
- 8:01Speaker 8: We have to trust our coverage. We have to we
- 8:04Speaker 8: have to continually disguise our coverages, you know, And I
- 8:08Speaker 8: think I think PK does a great job of that,
- 8:10Speaker 8: and I think our veterans secondary does a really good
- 8:12Speaker 8: job of that. Those guys work really well in unison
- 8:14Speaker 8: with one another.
- 8:16Speaker 7: And so you know, his.
- 8:18Speaker 8: Length can be a problem on one on one balls
- 8:20Speaker 8: and fifty to fifty balls, But again, the scheme is
- 8:23Speaker 8: a problem too. So you have to defend the scheme
- 8:25Speaker 8: and you have to defend all eleven players that you're defending,
- 8:28Speaker 8: but knowing where are the targets right and where are
- 8:31Speaker 8: the targets going?
- 8:32Speaker 7: And he gets plenty of targets.
- 8:33Speaker 8: He has plenty of catches and yards, and so we
- 8:36Speaker 8: kind of have to do both. But again, we want
- 8:38Speaker 8: to remain competitive and we want to remain confident in
- 8:41Speaker 8: our own ability to go do that. I think we
- 8:43Speaker 8: have pretty good players too, and to marry that with
- 8:46Speaker 8: the scheme. I think that's why we've been playing such
- 8:48Speaker 8: good pass defense all year.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Good afternoon, Good morning, coach, coach.
- 8:53Speaker 14: Are there any young players who behind the scenes maybe
- 8:57Speaker 14: aren't getting a lot of playing time now, but as
- 9:00Speaker 14: a staff, you guys are really happy with how they're
- 9:02Speaker 14: growing and developing and really excited about their future.
- 9:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I think there's a there's a few
- 9:08Speaker 7: of those guys.
- 9:09Speaker 8: I think Zena definitely is one of those guys who
- 9:13Speaker 8: has been very impressive with us on He has been
- 9:16Speaker 8: on scout team, you know, with the offense down there
- 9:19Speaker 8: with us and competing against us every day, and you know,
- 9:22Speaker 8: trying to find roles for him on special teams to
- 9:24Speaker 8: get him more involved. I love the development of those
- 9:28Speaker 8: safeties and Jordan Johnson Rebel and Xavier Phil to me,
- 9:31Speaker 8: I think those two guys have done a nice job.
- 9:32Speaker 8: Wardell Mack another guy that that kind of falls into
- 9:36Speaker 8: into that category. I'm been really impressed with Parker Livingstone.
- 9:40Speaker 8: You know, he's a guy that has really grown and
- 9:42Speaker 8: and continues to improve, and he's you know, he's back
- 9:45Speaker 8: to really one hundred percent healthy. So that's just to
- 9:48Speaker 8: name a few there. There's but all these guys are
- 9:50Speaker 8: working and getting better and that that's the encouraging thing.
- 9:55Speaker 15: Uh, Steve, I'm on the All American Committee. We're picking
- 9:58Speaker 15: our teams this Sunday and next Sunday. I'm curious which
- 10:01Speaker 15: of your players you would vouch for as that caliber
- 10:05Speaker 15: and and just anybody you've played against your scene.
- 10:08Speaker 7: This year feels kind of like a setup question, Kurt.
- 10:14Speaker 8: You know, I think I think we've got a lot
- 10:15Speaker 8: of really good players, you know, and I'm but more important,
- 10:19Speaker 8: I'm really proud of the guys that decided to stay
- 10:22Speaker 8: in school. You know, we had some guys with some
- 10:25Speaker 8: tough decisions last year. You know, John a with the
- 10:28Speaker 8: decision he had to make, Alfred Collins with the decision
- 10:30Speaker 8: he had to make, Vernon Broughton with his decision, Quinn
- 10:33Speaker 8: with his decision. And I'm naming those guys off because
- 10:37Speaker 8: I know it was a tough decision. Do I go
- 10:38Speaker 8: to the NFL, do I stay in school, And I
- 10:40Speaker 8: think they're all reaping the benefits of staying in school.
- 10:43Speaker 8: They've all played football at a really high level. Baron
- 10:46Speaker 8: Surrell is another one of those guys that falls into
- 10:48Speaker 8: that category. So they're all reaping the benefits of sticking
- 10:52Speaker 8: around for another year.
- 10:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 8: I say this a lot about kind of awards and
- 10:59Speaker 8: all American teams and things at the end of the season,
- 11:02Speaker 8: even the NFL Draft. I think I think team's success
- 11:06Speaker 8: is what then kind of promotes the individual accolades, awards
- 11:10Speaker 8: and honors and things of that nature. And so I
- 11:12Speaker 8: think we've got a really good football team. And we
- 11:15Speaker 8: have a really good football team. So we have good players,
- 11:18Speaker 8: and they play well together and they're great teammates with
- 11:20Speaker 8: one another. And I think, you know, if we can
- 11:23Speaker 8: continue to win, I think we'll see, you know, more
- 11:26Speaker 8: of these individual accolades, All American Teams award winners from our.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Roster because we do have a lot of talented players.
- 11:33Speaker 16: Hey, coach wanted to bring some of those players up,
- 11:36Speaker 16: but one in particular, I wanted to talk about Anthony Hill.
- 11:40Speaker 16: Can you talk about his growth and maturation in such
- 11:44Speaker 16: a short period.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Of time and how well he's been able to play. Yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 7: I'm I love ant.
- 11:51Speaker 8: You know, he's a he's a guy who last season
- 11:55Speaker 8: was just trying to play football, you know. I mean
- 11:57Speaker 8: he was just if he could run and hit something
- 11:59Speaker 8: it worked, you know, And he was learning his way
- 12:03Speaker 8: as he was going, you know, and he had Jalen
- 12:04Speaker 8: Ford there kind of navigating things. And we really put
- 12:08Speaker 8: a lot on a this year coming back. What I've
- 12:11Speaker 8: been impressed with him is obviously the playmaking ability.
- 12:13Speaker 7: We see it.
- 12:14Speaker 8: You know, he's got sacks, he forces turnovers. He had
- 12:17Speaker 8: a great punch out causing the fumble last week. You know,
- 12:20Speaker 8: he's disruptive, He's very versatile. He could play on the
- 12:23Speaker 8: line of scrimmage, he can play off the ball. But
- 12:27Speaker 8: who he is as a person and the work that
- 12:29Speaker 8: he puts in and the way he represents our football
- 12:33Speaker 8: program is as impressive to me as it is the
- 12:37Speaker 8: way that he plays the game. And I always say
- 12:40Speaker 8: there's a real correlation to that, right who you are
- 12:42Speaker 8: some of the.
- 12:42Speaker 7: Time is who you are all the time.
- 12:44Speaker 8: If you want to be a really good football player,
- 12:46Speaker 8: you got to be a really good person off the field,
- 12:48Speaker 8: And those two things tie together, and there's a level
- 12:51Speaker 8: of consistency that he's playing.
- 12:52Speaker 7: With right now.
- 12:53Speaker 8: You know, down in down out, game in game out.
- 12:56Speaker 8: I know number of zero is going to be there
- 12:57Speaker 8: Saturday at eleven am. I don't have to worry about
- 13:00Speaker 8: that when we take the field, that dude's gonna be
- 13:02Speaker 8: ready to play.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Hey, Steve, And it can't be that I'm not boring.
- 13:06Speaker 7: You're yawning on here right now. I'm just kidding with you.
- 13:08Speaker 17: Sorry, what You're not the first I'm not going to
- 13:11Speaker 17: ask a setup question.
- 13:12Speaker 7: So that's the first time Kurt's ever asked a set
- 13:16Speaker 7: up question.
- 13:17Speaker 17: Sore At the beginning of the season, when they changed
- 13:23Speaker 17: the playoff to twelve teams, they were purists out there
- 13:26Speaker 17: and it said it was going to hurt the regular season.
- 13:29Speaker 17: But it feels like the opposite has happened. The regular
- 13:31Speaker 17: season seems as sexy as it's ever been with these
- 13:34Speaker 17: elimination games. What are your thoughts on how the regular
- 13:38Speaker 17: season has more buzz with this playoff coming up.
- 13:41Speaker 8: Yeah, I love it, And I'll be honest with you,
- 13:43Speaker 8: I love it. You know, I've been I've been banging
- 13:45Speaker 8: for this playoff now for for some time. You know,
- 13:48Speaker 8: I always say we're we're We're the only sport that
- 13:51Speaker 8: didn't have a true playoff, you know, and every other sport,
- 13:54Speaker 8: whether it's professional or collegiate, to have a playoff.
- 13:57Speaker 7: We have March.
- 13:58Speaker 8: Madness, we have the NCAA, you know, baseball tournament and
- 14:01Speaker 8: College World Series, and you know, NBA or NFL, everybody
- 14:05Speaker 8: has it. You know, us in boxing are like the
- 14:07Speaker 8: only two that don't have like a playoff, And so
- 14:10Speaker 8: for us to finally get it now, I think is awesome.
- 14:14Speaker 7: And I've been saying this.
- 14:14Speaker 8: I think the popularity of college football right now is
- 14:18Speaker 8: at an all time high. There's so many meaningful games
- 14:22Speaker 8: that are happening every weekend. And again, you know, before
- 14:26Speaker 8: everybody was worried about who was going to be five, six,
- 14:28Speaker 8: and seven, and now all of a sudden, you're looking
- 14:30Speaker 8: at ten through twenty five of who can find their
- 14:33Speaker 8: way into this playoff? And what if somebody you know
- 14:37Speaker 8: in the front half of that, you know, one, three, eight,
- 14:39Speaker 8: what if they lose? How far do they fall? And
- 14:41Speaker 8: I just think it's super exciting, and I love it
- 14:43Speaker 8: for our sport. I love it for our game. I
- 14:45Speaker 8: love it for the popularity I think it's creating a
- 14:48Speaker 8: lot more exposure for more team.
- 14:51Speaker 9: And Steve when you look at your turnover numbers, depends
- 14:54Speaker 9: on turnover numbers, especially if interceptions. Is that a good
- 14:58Speaker 9: way to measure skill or is it a matter of
- 15:01Speaker 9: scheme or being in the right place at the right time,
- 15:02Speaker 9: or how do you measure turnovers?
- 15:05Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's a combination of things. I think one,
- 15:08Speaker 8: you have to have scheme right, you have to put
- 15:10Speaker 8: players in position to make plays. Two you have to
- 15:13Speaker 8: have ability to make the play. But I think turnovers
- 15:17Speaker 8: happen because of football IQ and awareness and I really
- 15:20Speaker 8: believe that. Like, you can be big, tall and fast,
- 15:23Speaker 8: but if you don't know what's happening around you, you
- 15:26Speaker 8: probably don't recognize when there's an opportunity to punch a
- 15:31Speaker 8: ball out to cause a fumble, or when to get
- 15:33Speaker 8: your hands up when you're rushing the pass, or to
- 15:35Speaker 8: tip a pass, or you know, because I'm so confident
- 15:39Speaker 8: in my coverage, can't I don't have to be so
- 15:42Speaker 8: locked in on the receiver. I can see a ball
- 15:44Speaker 8: be thrown and then if it is tipped, I can
- 15:46Speaker 8: I can break on that ball and go make the play.
- 15:49Speaker 8: So again, I think their scheme. I think there's ability,
- 15:52Speaker 8: but I also think there's football IQ and football awareness
- 15:57Speaker 8: that that that our guys, especially in the back end,
- 15:59Speaker 8: have a ton. I think that's because one, there's a
- 16:01Speaker 8: lot of experience back there, but two, I think there's
