- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. Ember Wednesday, September 23 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Ember day, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, as on other Wednesdays in Ember days, the station is held at Saint Mary Major. The prophet Amos had foretold in the eighth century before Christ the destruction of the kingdom of Israel and its coming restoration which we hear in the first reading. Later on indeed, Nehemiah and Estras brought back the captives from Babylon and rebuilt Jerusalem.
- 0:58When this work was completed, they all assembled on the first day of the seventh month when Ezra read to them the law of Moses and said to them, this is the holy day of the Lord. Be not sad for the joy of the Lord is our strength, which we hear in the second lesson and the communion verse. The Wednesday in September Ember week, which month was formerly, as its name shows, the seventh of the year, recalls this joyous anniversary, which was a figure of our redemption by Jesus. Indeed, the introit tells us to be thrilled with the joy in God, our protector. This joy is accompanied by the spirit of penitence expressed in the violet vestments used.
- 1:55And the church prays in the second collect that we depriving ourselves of bodily nourishment may also abstain from sins of the mind. The gospel indeed speaks of the impure spirit which can only be dispelled by prayer and fasting. Having fallen into sin through our weakness let us pray as we do in the first collect and fast that God may give a remedy by his merciful help. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 2:42The introit. Rejoice we all in honor of the God who aids us. Cry out with gladness to the God of Israel. Take up the Psalm sweetly sounding with the zither. Blow the trumpet loud at the beginning of the month.
- 3:01Duty demands it of Israel. It was a decree the god of Jacob made. Bidding Joseph remember the day when he escaped from Egypt and heard an alien speech no more. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 3:29Rejoice we all in honor of the God who aids us. Cry out with gladness to the God of Israel. Take up the Psalm sweetly sounding with a zither. Blow the trumpet loud at the beginning of the month. Duty demands it of Israel.
- 3:49It was a decree the God of Jacob made. After the Kyrie Eleison, the priest says, oramus, which means let us pray. And then, us kneel. All genuflect and the server responds levitate. Arise.
- 4:14And the priest prays the first collect. By thy healing mercies, we pray thee, O Lord, enable our frail nature to hold its ground. Let thy pity renew that which of itself is ever wasting away through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Amos.
- 4:54Thus says the Lord. Behold, the days are coming in which the plowman will overtake the reaper still at his task, in which seed time and vintage time will be won. The mountainsides will flow with must and every hill be cultivated. I will bring my people, the Israelites, back from exile to rebuild the deserted cities and dwell in them, plant vineyards, and drink the wine of them, fence in gardens, and eat their fruit. And I will settle them in their own land.
- 5:36Never again shall they be torn away from it. This land which I have given them says the Lord thy God. The first gradual. Who is like the Lord our God, so high above us that stoops to regard lowly things in heaven and earth, lifting up the poor man from the dust he lay in, bidding the beggar leave his dunghill. Here, the priest says, dominus verbiscum.
- 6:14The Lord be with you. To which the server responds, and with thy spirit. And the priest continues with the second collect. Let us pray. We pray thee, oh lord, grant the petition of thy household that as we fast from bodily food, we may also abstain from spiritual wickedness through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 6:58Amen. A commemoration of Saint Linus. Graciously hearken, we beseech thee, O Lord, to the prayers which we offer unto thee in the solemnity of blessed Linus, thy confessor and pontiff, and by the interceding merits of him who attained worthily to serve thee, absolve us from all sins. A commemoration of Saint Thecla. Grant we beseech thee almighty God that we who celebrate the festival of blessed Thecla, thy virgin and martyr, may rejoice in her annual solemnity and make progress by the example of such great faith through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 7:59Amen. A lesson from the book of Ezra. In those days, the whole people gathered like one man in the street that approaches the water gate. And there, they would have the scribe Ezra go and fetch the book in which the law of Moses, the Lord's prescription to Israel was written down. So there and then on the first day of the seventh month, the priest Esdras fetched out the book in the presence of a great throng of men and women with such children as were old enough to understand it.
- 8:42And there in the street that approaches the Watergate, he proclaimed the law before grown men and women and such younger folk as could take it in from daybreak to noon. And all listened attentively while the reading went on. A wooden pulpit had been erected to carry the sound better. And at this the scribe Ezra stood plainly seen as he opened the book by all the people underneath. When he had opened it all rose and when he blessed the name of the Lord the great God all lifted their hands and answered him, Amen.
- 9:29Amen. And with that, they bowed down and worshiped God with their faces bent towards the ground. Then the Levites enjoined silence on the people as they stood there in their places for the reading of the law. And they read out the book of the law clear and plain to give the sense of it so that all could understand the reading. And now Nehemiah with Ezra's priest and scribe and these Levites who interpreted to the people what was read must needs remind them that it was a feast day set apart to the Lord.
- 10:15There must be no lamenting and weeping. Already the whole multitude were in tears as they listened to the words of the law. Go home, said Nehemiah, and regale yourselves with rich meat and honeyed wine sharing your good things with those who have none. There must be no sadness on this day, the Lord's feast day to rejoice in the Lord, there lies our strength. The second gradual.
- 10:55Blessed the nation that calls the Lord its own God, the people he has chosen out to be his. It was the Lord's word that made the heavens, the breath of his lips that peopled them. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Mark. At that time, in answer to his question, one of the crowd said to Jesus, master, I have brought my son to thee. He is possessed by a dumb spirit.
- 11:32And wherever it seizes on him, it tears him, and he foams at the mouth, and gnashes his teeth, and his strength is drained from him. And I bade thy disciples cast it out, but they were powerless. And he answered them, faithless generation. How long must I be with you? How long must I bear with you?
- 12:06Bring him to me. So they brought the boy to him and the evil spirit, as soon as it saw him, threw the boy into a convulsion so that he fell on the ground writhing and foaming at the mouth. And now Jesus asked the father, how long has this been happening to him? From childhood, he said, and often it has thrown him into the fire and into water to make an end of him. Come have pity on us and help us if thou canst.
- 12:55But Jesus said, if thou canst believe to him who believes everything is possible. Whereupon the father of the boy cried aloud in tears, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. And Jesus, seeing how the multitude was gathering around them, rebuked the unclean spirit. Thou dumb and deaf spirit, he said, it is I that command thee.
- 13:36Come out of him and never enter into him again. With that crying aloud and throwing him into a violent convulsion, It came out of him and he lay there like a corpse so that many declared, he is dead. But Jesus took hold of his hand and raised him and he stood up. When he had gone into a house and they were alone the disciples asked him, why was it that we could not cast it out? And he told them, there is no way of casting out such spirits as this except by prayer and fasting.
- 14:30The offertory, fain what I have all my study in the law I love, flung wide my arms to greet thy law. The secret. O Lord, may this offering wash away our sins. May it sanctify thy servants, body and soul, making them fit to offer sacrifice. A commemoration of Saint Linus.
- 15:03May thy saints, we beseech thee, oh lord, everywhere rejoice us that while we recall their merits, we may feel their patronage. A commemoration of Saint Thecla. Receive, oh lord, the offerings which we bring on the festival of blessed Thecla, thy virgin and martyr by whose intercession we hope to be delivered through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface.
- 15:50Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee. Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 16:40The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 17:01Regale yourselves with rich meat and honeyed wine, sharing your good things with those who have none. There must be no sadness on this day, the Lord's feast day, to rejoice in the Lord, there lies our strength. The post communion. Let us pray. O Lord, whose grace enables us, thy zealous servants, to perform this rite, we humbly implore thee that in partaking of thy heaven sent gifts we may receive it at thy hand with fitting dispositions.
- 17:48A commemoration of Saint Linus. Grant we beseech thee, Almighty God, that by showing gratitude for the gifts which we have received by the intercession of blessed Linus, thy confessor and bishop, we may obtain still greater blessings. A commemoration of Saint Thecla. May we be helped, oh Lord, by the mysteries we have received and through the intercession of blessed Thecla, thy virgin and martyr, may they give us protection and joy forevermore through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 18:45In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Saint Linus, pray for us. Saint Thecla, pray for us.
