- 0:30Speaker 1: The Theft from the Sun. One time, when old Man
- 0:34Speaker 1: was on a journey, he came to the Sun's lodge
- 0:37Speaker 1: and went in and sat down, and the Sun asked
- 0:41Speaker 1: him to stay with him for a time. Old Man
- 0:44Speaker 1: was glad to do so. One day the meat was
- 0:48Speaker 1: all gone, and the Sun said, well, old Man, what
- 0:52Speaker 1: do you say if we go out and kill some deer.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I like what you say, said old Man. Deer meat
- 1:00Speaker 1: is good. The Sun took down a bag that was
- 1:03Speaker 1: hanging from a lodge pile and took from it a
- 1:06Speaker 1: handsome pair of leggings embroidered with porcupine quills and pretty feathers.
- 1:12Speaker 1: These are my hunting leggings, said the Sun. They have
- 1:16Speaker 1: great power. When I want to kill deer, all I
- 1:20Speaker 1: have to do is to put them on and walk
- 1:23Speaker 1: around a patch of brush, and the leggings set it
- 1:27Speaker 1: on fire and drive out the deer so that I
- 1:30Speaker 1: can shoot them. Well well, exclaimed old man, how wonderful
- 1:36Speaker 1: that is. He began to think, I wish I had
- 1:40Speaker 1: such a pair of leggings as that, And after he
- 1:44Speaker 1: had thought about it some more, he made up his
- 1:47Speaker 1: mind that he would have those leggings if he had
- 1:51Speaker 1: to steal them. They went out to hunt, and when
- 1:56Speaker 1: they came to a patch of brush, the sun set
- 1:59Speaker 1: it on fire with his hunting leggings. A number of
- 2:02Speaker 1: deer ran out, and each shot one. That night, when
- 2:07Speaker 1: they were going to bed, the Sun pulled off his
- 2:10Speaker 1: leggings and laid them aside. Old man saw where he
- 2:14Speaker 1: had put them, and in the middle of the night,
- 2:17Speaker 1: after everyone was asleep, he took the leggings and went away.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He traveled a long time until he had gone far
- 2:26Speaker 1: away and was tired. Then, making a pillow of the leggings,
- 2:30Speaker 1: he lay down and slept. After a while, he heard
- 2:34Speaker 1: someone speaking and woke up and saw that it was day.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Some one was talking to him. The sun was saying,
- 2:42Speaker 1: old man, why are my leggings under your head? Old
- 2:47Speaker 1: man looked about him and saw that he was in
- 2:50Speaker 1: the Sun's lodge. He thought he must have wandered around
- 2:54Speaker 1: and got lost, and returned there again. The Sun spoke
- 2:59Speaker 1: and art asked, what are you doing with my leggings, Oh,
- 3:05Speaker 1: replied old Man. I could not find anything for a pillow,
- 3:09Speaker 1: so I put these leggings under my head. When night
- 3:13Speaker 1: came and all had gone to bed, again, old man
- 3:17Speaker 1: stole the leggings and ran off. This time he did
- 3:21Speaker 1: not walk at all. He kept running until it was
- 3:24Speaker 1: almost morning, and then lay down and slept. When morning came,
- 3:30Speaker 1: he found himself still in the Sun's lodge. You see
- 3:35Speaker 1: what a fool he was. He did not know that
- 3:38Speaker 1: the whole world is the Sun's lodge. He did not
- 3:42Speaker 1: know that no matter how far he ran, he could
- 3:46Speaker 1: not get out of the Sun's sight. This time, the
- 3:50Speaker 1: Sun said, old Man, since you like my leggings so much,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I give them to you. Keep them. Then old man
- 4:01Speaker 1: was glad, and he went away. One day, his food
- 4:06Speaker 1: was all gone, and he put on the hunting leggings
- 4:09Speaker 1: and went out and set fire to a piece of brush.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He was just going to kill some deer that were
- 4:16Speaker 1: running out. When he saw that the fire was getting
- 4:19Speaker 1: close to him. He ran away as fast as he could,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but the fire gained on him and began to burn
- 4:27Speaker 1: his legs. His leggings were all on fire. He came
- 4:32Speaker 1: to a river and jumped in and put off the
- 4:34Speaker 1: leggings as soon as he could. They were burnt to pieces.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Perhaps the sun did this because old man tried to
- 4:44Speaker 1: steal his leggings. End of Chapter twenty one.
