- 0:34Guys, welcome back. What is going on?
- 0:36Different thinkers. The aspy world is a place where
- 0:38we think differently daily. What's up different?
- 0:41Think of Pham. I am doing a video on
- 0:43prosopagnosia. Now this is an interesting video
- 0:47because I have known about prosopagnosia for a long time,
- 0:53but I didn't know the full kind of terminology or the name for
- 0:57it. Which is quite interesting
- 0:58because prosopagnosia is also known as face blindness.
- 1:03Now face blindness is when you cannot recognize somebody else's
- 1:06face or you can't recognize faces on people.
- 1:09And so autism being such a complex condition as it is,
- 1:13autistic people sometimes have issues recognizing people's
- 1:17faces or recognizing even their family members faces.
- 1:20Now I have this issue as well, which is really interesting.
- 1:23So when I when I meet people, I listen to their voice and look
- 1:27at their shoes, and that is how I identify the person in the
- 1:30future because I have an issue with looking at people's eyes
- 1:33like most people in the autism spectrum.
- 1:35And because of that, if you're not looking someone in the eyes,
- 1:38you're not really looking at their face.
- 1:39And if you're not looking at a face, how on earth are you going
- 1:41to recognize them? Again and again and again?
- 1:43But prosopagnosia actually is a condition where the
- 1:48prosopagnosia is a condition where the actual communication
- 1:52part of seeing somebody's face is almost missing, so that the
- 1:55face becomes kind of unrecognizable completely.
- 1:58And this is also a condition that can be diagnosed with other
- 2:03conditions like Down syndrome or other kind of learning
- 2:06difficulties, right? So prostopagnosia is
- 2:09independently diagnosed but actually comes as part of almost
- 2:12like an autism bolt on kind of part of, you know, an autism
- 2:15spectrum disorder, although I've never heard it being diagnosed.
- 2:19Prostopagnosia, I just hear is like face blindness in autism.
- 2:23Now, lots of autistic people have this issue, but some
- 2:26autistic people don't have this issue.
- 2:27It's not something that is given.
- 2:29It's not something that, like every single autistic person has
- 2:32face blindness. That's not what it is.
- 2:34But it can occur in autistic people.
- 2:36I would say it's like 5050. Most of the people I know who
- 2:39are on the spectrum actually have the same issue and not
- 2:41recognizing people's faces as well.
- 2:43And you know, I do all the time. I don't even recognize my own
- 2:45family members sometimes. And they could like, you know,
- 2:47walk past me in the street unless I hear them.
- 2:50And again, you've got to think about zoning out when an
- 2:52autistic person is in a situation or scenario or they're
- 2:55thinking about that situation. If somebody know, walks past
- 2:58them because they're not part of that situation, they ain't going
- 3:01to know they're not going to. They're not going to be like, Oh
- 3:03yeah, yeah, that's blah, blah, blah.
- 3:04Because, you know, you're focusing on the task at hand,
- 3:06not focusing on the what's going on, what else is going on?
- 3:09And can I spot anybody? Do I know anybody's faces?
- 3:12But this does leave for some really difficult situations.
- 3:14Like, I remember I was sitting down listen to a talk by Doctor
- 3:17Luke Burden when we were doing keynote talks in in an autism
- 3:21conference. And he was saying that he had a
- 3:23girlfriend once and he went around to a house to call, you
- 3:26know, just to call for us if she was in to hang out and when
- 3:29they're in university. And so this girl answered the
- 3:32door, He asked for his girlfriend and his girlfriend
- 3:34was like, what are you talking about?
- 3:35It's me. Like she answered the door and
- 3:36he didn't recognize her. Because face blindness doesn't
- 3:39doesn't bow easy, You know, it's not it's not something that you
- 3:41can really deal with. And especially if you've not met
- 3:44somebody that often and you haven't really gotten used to
- 3:47their their, their mannerisms and just being around them by by
- 3:52knowing their voice. And that the way they talk,
- 3:54which is basically my main way, I can hear people's voices and
- 3:57identify them. It's just kind of like how I
- 3:59identify actors. I can't just look at a movie and
- 4:01say like, oh, that's that guy from the thing I have to like,
- 4:04listen, I go, Oh yeah, yeah, The voice is the actor from this
- 4:07thing. And that's how I recognize all
- 4:09the all actors that I know from movies.
- 4:11I just recognize them by voice. So it's quite a difficult
- 4:14experience, actually. It's quite an interesting one.
- 4:15But it does cause issues, you know, not knowing when you know,
- 4:19you meet somebody who they are and you've met them 100 times.
- 4:22It's really, really difficult. But it's part and parcel of
- 4:25prostopagnosia and sometimes autism as well.
- 4:28Guys, I'd love to know what's your take on it?
- 4:30Do you have face blindness? Do you have issues like this?
- 4:32Pop it in a comment down below. I read every single ones.
