- 2:15I'll get to that one day. Oh yeah, so today's episode mmmm,
- 2:23well, today, we're finally doing it. Yep, after what two months
- 2:30of of I was originally planning on reading this. You know what, you
- 2:36know what a right drag me, drag me, drag me. Yes,
- 2:44I'm gonna drag you because you know what? You know what? What in
- 2:50two months, I've read over twelve books. Twelve books? Uh huh?
- 2:58And it took you that long, if not longer, just to read one
- 3:01uh huh huh, Yeah it did. And let me tell you something,
- 3:07ladies and gentlemen, it took him so long to read this book that we
- 3:08pushed this book back and chose to do another book series. And what was
- 3:14what was the book we reviewed before this one? Was it? Was it
- 3:16brother Song? Or was there another book that we decided to go over.
- 3:21I think it was Brother's Song? Was it? Because it felt it felt
- 3:23like we did that a while ago, So I mean we skipped like a
- 3:27week or two, Okay, I think it's I think it was Brother's Song
- 3:31that I think. So we did all these other books and I fell down
- 3:39a rabbit hole of reading A brother A bunch of other book series by the
- 3:44same author that includes the that includes Bear Otter and The Kid and Yeah,
- 3:51it was it was yeah, it was Brother's song. Yeah. I read
- 3:58all those books. And then even before it started, well, uh,
- 4:00even before I started the Wolf Song series, I'd actually read another book called
- 4:04Stormfront from the book from the Dress, Dress and Files. And now we're
- 4:14finally doing fairy Tale, even though we usually planned to do this months ago,
- 4:18but Devin was like, I want to I want to be included.
- 4:21I want to read a book and review it. I'm like, okay,
- 4:26cool, okay, okay. Two months later, you know what, Okay,
- 4:33I'm well plead my case, ladies and gentlemen. As you could see,
- 4:39I am not much of a reader of the physical media of novels.
- 4:43I'm more of a phys of a graphic novel and kind book reader, mostly
- 4:48because I suffer from hardcore dyslex Yeah. If you don't know what that is,
- 4:57ladies and gentlemen, that is basically means you don't read so good,
- 5:01meaning your mind doesn't comprehend things the same way as everybody else. It means
- 5:05when you look at a book and see the words, the words move around,
- 5:10and when the words move around, you kind of just don't want to
- 5:15read, and it takes you three times as long as a normal person to
- 5:16read. Granted, I know people who have just like to obviously who can
- 5:21read books like a normal person. But me, I'm a different I'm a
- 5:28different fucking case. I started. I actually wanted to do this podcast because
- 5:32I wanted to get myself into books to get better at I mean, I
- 5:38could read. I'm not stupid, y'all, but the sexit makes it it's
- 5:43a hurdle. Okay, it's a big wall. I got crossed, but
- 5:46I wanted to do that. So I'm like, I'm gonna read I'm gonna
- 5:50seriously read fairy Tale because I mean I did read a few other books,
- 5:55like the Ring series or one of the books in the Ring series and which
- 5:59I'm sure will go over on this podcast at some point, and then maybe
- 6:02a few others, but like this is one. I'm like, I'm gonna
- 6:08do this by myself. I usually like to have, like to read books
- 6:12with my boyfriend and he reads to me and I get I understand it better
- 6:15because that's how my mind works. But this, I'm like, I can
- 6:18do this. I can do this. And then I got frustrated and I'm
- 6:20like no, I can't do this, and I'm like no, I can't
- 6:24do this. It's is a lot of back and forth, and eventually I'm
- 6:27like, you know what, fuck it for this one audiobook. So I
- 6:30got audiobook and read along with the audiobook. So that's not cheating, that's
- 6:35still reading. I just had an assistant read to me and made my life
- 6:44a little easier. Okay, I will get better as we go along,
- 6:48because I'm gonna do more books on here. Luckily, those books that I
- 6:53want to do are not as long as this one. I think I bit
- 6:57off more than I could chew. But I'm glad I stuck with it because
- 7:00his book is actually pretty good. Oh I plead my case, think your
- 7:04honor. And you know, I thought maybe I would have encouraged him to
- 7:10read more by by spoiling the book just a little bit for him, not
- 7:14giving complete spoilers, but telling him like, oh, yeah, you know,
- 7:17you're definitely gonna love this book because guess what, there's an Eldrick terror
- 7:21uh And he was correct, there is there is. Yeah, I love
- 7:25him. I love him, so you know, I honestly, you know
- 7:30what, I don't even need to roast I don't even need to roast Evan
- 7:32because I've been roasting him for the past couple months that I've been waiting him
- 7:34for him to finish his book. So I think i've I've gotten the point
- 7:39across and uh, I'm I'm just so ready. Let's let's go. This
- 7:45has been two months in the waiting. Yeah, yeah, So, ladies
- 7:51and Jens and others. The book we talked we are going to be talking
- 7:55about today is fairy Tale by Stephen King. This book was really bay clop
- 8:05Sclore. His book was released September sixth, twenty twenty two, which is
- 8:11weird because I thought, for whatever reason, it came out this year,
- 8:13but it didn't. So actually, no, we knew about fairy Tale last
- 8:20year because I was like, oh, I want to do this one eventually,
- 8:22we never got around to it till recently. So yeah, well,
- 8:24because I hadn't bought the book yet, Yeah, and you want and we
- 8:28had a list of other stuff we wanted to do and yeah, yeah,
- 8:31and then I finally bought the book, but it still took me a few
- 8:35months to actually get around to reading it because I had other books I wanted
- 8:37to read. Yeah, and then there was a point where I was just
- 8:39so overwhelmed that I stopped reading for a bit, because that's what that's what
- 8:41happens. Like I will find a book that I want to read, and
- 8:45like I'll go months and months of just just reading all these different books,
- 8:50and then I get to a point where I fizzled out and I'm like,
- 8:52all right, I'm done reading, Like I'm going to just go enjoy life
- 8:54now. Yeah, And now here we are and finally read the book,
- 9:01and I'm like, oh, I'm so ready to review this book because I
- 9:03like this. This book is like probably one of my favorite Stephen King books
- 9:07because it's interesting. It's interesting because it's like what if fairy tales were real
- 9:16but not just real, but realistic in terms of the story, and not
- 9:20just magic wise, but like like so many other different aspects. Because in
- 9:24most fairy tales, it's always, you know, like our main character slash
- 9:31hero he like you know, discovers he or she discovers fairy tale lands,
- 9:39and there's like some sort of evil like king, witch or whatever. Right,
- 9:45yeah, and like power of love or like some other like power of
- 9:50friendship bullshit allows to defeat the allows them to defeat the evil king slash queens
- 9:56slash sorcerer whatever, is like Holy the Land hostage and like, let's say
- 10:03there was a curse on the land or something, and once they they break
- 10:07the curse, everything goes back to normal and everyone lives happily ever after.
- 10:13Well and while like Stephen King definitely took notes from fairy like from like your
- 10:18standard fairy tale, like, it didn't things weren't peachy, weren't all peachey
- 10:24King at the end of the story, it didn't all go back to normal
- 10:28and not everybody lived happily ever after. It was actually more realistic, like,
- 10:33Okay, well, curse has been broken. Yeah, the plot,
- 10:37the plight of the land has been ended, but there's we're still dealing with
- 10:41the repercussions. Yeah, everything isn't going to go back exactly. It's not
- 10:46going to go back to exactly what it was before. Yeah. So again,
- 10:54this book was done by Stephen King. It is a dark fantasy book,
- 10:58so it's not the usual the whole horror mystery, mystery thrillers that Stephen
- 11:03King Yieldsy writes. I would say this is more in the vein of the
- 11:09Dark Tower, more of the fantasy aspect of that, just more of the
- 11:11fairy tale sprinkles than the darker toned Dark Tower. Yeah. So this is
- 11:24centered around a story around Charlie Reed, a seventeen year old who I don't
- 11:33want to spell it, so let's get right into it, yea, sir,
- 11:39So a little backstory about Charlie himself is so, Charlie is the son
- 11:46of a single dad. His dad, his mom passed away quite brutally.
- 11:52She was struck by a truck while crossing a very narrow bridge. It was
- 11:56like, although they don't really go much into details, it's applied that she
- 12:01became pure physics at the end of it. So she died in Oh but
- 12:05they do describe her death though later on what happened, Yeah, yeah,
- 12:09they do, Like they did was brutal. Yeah, it was brutal,
- 12:15and it was traumatic, like for a solid minute. His dad had become
- 12:18an alcoholic, Like I think what for like a year after her Like it
- 12:24was either like a year or a couple of years after her death. His
- 12:26dad like had like he he went downhill and it's understandable, you know,
- 12:33your wife dies in a brutal accident, and he didn't. He had a
- 12:39hard time coping, and unfortunately for Charlie, he basically had to raise himself
- 12:43for a few years while his dad continued to descend into alcoholism. Eventually,
- 12:50his dad came to a sense, like Charlie helped helped his dad come to
- 12:54his senses, his dad started going to AA. And by the time his
- 12:58story had I think he uh, I believe his dad had been sober for
- 13:07like, I'd say, about four or five years, So it's yeah,
- 13:15yeah, at least I think it's at least I'm pretty sious at least five
- 13:18years he was sober by the time the story starts and ends. Yeah,
- 13:26and Charlie he himself. Although he and his dad have a better relationship now,
- 13:31he still holds some resentments for his dad because, like he still remembers
- 13:35how the times that they struggled, how Charlie basically had to be the adult,
- 13:41had to pay make sure the bills were paid, and and when his
- 13:48dad finally pulled himself out of it went AA and just started like turning his
- 13:56life around, Charlie just had like still holds on to some of those resentments,
- 14:03Like he loves his dad, but he just does want he doesn't forget
- 14:05the fact that he was basically raising himself for a few years. There But
- 14:11aside from that, Charlie is he's a you know, he's your I don't
- 14:16want to say he's your all American boy, but he's your typical like he's
- 14:20he's a he's an he's an athlete. He played football and his I understand,
- 14:26I remember his bath. His coach wanted really wanted him to play varsity
- 14:30for the baseball team, but he really hated the coach, so he was
- 14:35like, no, fuck that. But the story is centered around Charlie.
- 14:39Uh. And it really begins when he meets an elderly man. What was
- 14:46the elderly man's name again, I totally forgot mister Howard Bowditch Boditch. He
- 14:56met Howard Bowditch on a day in April twenty thirteen. Basically he fell.
- 15:05He was on a ladder trying to work on something on the back of his
- 15:07house and he fell broke his leg or so you thought, broke his leg.
- 15:11And what lured him to finding Bodich was his dog, radar, Howling,
- 15:20and he got Charlie's attention and then from there Charlie cold on one got
- 15:24all taken care of. And that's where Charlie gets brought into knowing and basically
- 15:30taking care of mister Bowditch or Howard for quite some time. Yeah, So
- 15:39when Charlie realized that mister Bodach didn't have anybody to take care of Radar,
- 15:46he agreed to take care of Radar for mister Bodache while he recovered in the
- 15:50hospital. So he was in the hospital I'd say for like a week or
- 15:54a couple of weeks or so. Actually I think he was in there for
- 16:00almost a month almost, Oh god, I think it was like two two
- 16:04three weeks something that. Yeah, so Charlie ends up Charlie visits him in
- 16:11the hospital, gets the rundown of what of what the recovery time is going
- 16:17to look like, and what mister Bowditch needs, and he agrees to take
- 16:19care of Radar. Now, Radar herself is an elderly German shepherd dog.
- 16:25She's almost like fourteen fifteen years old. So she's yes, she an old
- 16:30girl. She's an old girl. But let me tell you something, ladies
- 16:33and gentlemen, she's a lot older than he thinks she is. And we
- 16:41will get she's I mean, technically she's not. She has no she's not.
- 16:49Okay, I'll I might cut this part out. She didn't use the
- 16:52sundial when they when he went into the thing, because he didn't have He
- 16:57never stated when he actstually gone her. You just stated when he was in
- 17:00the in the fantasy world, they had her as a puppy. You never
- 17:06stayed how long he actually had her, because yeah, you know, he
- 17:10actually got her in the nineties, which was when around the time the last
- 17:14time he used it. So he did use it on her at least like
- 17:18once. So Radar did, Like Radar has been around for a long time.
- 17:29Because the book, the book takes place in like Puss in that like
- 17:37the time of the story takes place in like twenty nineteen. I'd stay around
- 17:42there and mister Bowditch stopped using the uh, he stopped going down the down
- 17:55the staircase and using the sundown in the nineties. And now it wasn't twenty
- 18:00nineteen. Of this story takes places twenty thirteen, and the story takes place
- 18:03or twenty fourteen when he finally Yeah, he found mister Botage in his backyard
- 18:10in April twenty thirteen, and then he was taking care of him for seven
- 18:14months. During that During that seven month time frame, that's where like he
- 18:18was in the hospital, and then he cared for him when in his house.
- 18:22Yeah, that was twenty thirteen or twenty thirteen into twenty fourteen, basically
- 18:27those seven months that he was taking care of him before something happens. Air
- 18:32quotes right, Oh, hold on, because I know he's had her for
- 18:44a long long time, like he's had her like well before the he's started.
- 18:48I mean it, I mean it makes sense because he was talking about
- 18:49last time he went, Radar was a puppy, So I guess because I
- 18:56don't think he ever directly says how old she is or because I think all
- 19:00they said was she was a puppy, So you could assume that she's old
- 19:03as hell, because if it was the nineties or even the eighties, she'd
- 19:08be old as hell. So I guess, thinking back on, yeah,
- 19:12she Yeah, he would have to use at least once. But he never
- 19:15straight he never straight out said that he did. You just assumed because he
- 19:18says, can they do say that last time he went she was a puppy,
- 19:22last time she went there, well she was older than that, because
- 19:29the thing is, she was old enough like the he'd been bringing her down
- 19:32into the fairytale line like many times, even after she was a puppy,
- 19:36because she even remembered that shoemaker. Yeah, I know. That's what I'm
- 19:41saying, is when when they when he talks about the shoemaker, she indicates
- 19:45the last time she saw her she was a little puppy, never indicating that
- 19:52she was that she was old or whatnot, because she because she does like
- 19:57a hand motion, that she was much smaller when she met radar, right,
- 20:04or she could have been. How long, okay, how long does
- 20:08German shepherds live Germany? Anywhere between twelve and fifteen years. Big dogs don't
- 20:21really live for as well. I don't know. It's it's always weird because
- 20:25it's either small dogs live for a long time and big dogs don't, or
- 20:27big dogs live for a long time. In small dogs don't. German shepherd's
- 20:32lifespans nine to thirteen years. Say he went back in the nineties, because
- 20:37it's been at least nineties that it was the last time he ever went she
- 20:41was a puppy, Say she was a puppy. Then he's twenty three,
- 20:48so yeah, he probably used it probably once. But they never straight straight
- 20:52up I don't think they were ever straight up indicated I don't remember. I
- 20:56could be wrong, but I think you can't see the way that she did
- 20:59that. They dead. Okay, well back, let's just get back on
- 21:06topic. So yeah, so Radar. So Charlie ends up taking care of
- 21:14Radar for several for a little over a month while mister Bowdich recovers in the
- 21:18hospital and he eventually does come back. And this at this point, however,
- 21:23he needs to be an assisted living because to being given his advanced age,
- 21:30mister Bodich is no longer capable of really taking care of himself, even
- 21:34with his recovery and the physical therapy. So Charlie decides to take on the
- 21:41role of being his caretaker. Now, the thing is, Charlie was,
- 21:47excuse me, Charlie was, He feels like he needs to, uh,
- 21:53he needs to do this, uh basically become a caretaker for mister Bowden because
- 22:00when his dad was an alcoholic, he just remembers making it, like he
- 22:07calls it his deal with God. He prayed, he prayed to God,
- 22:11prayed to whoever was out there to please, like turn dad's life around so
- 22:15we can start living again instead of just surviving. Helped like get him out
- 22:21of his alcoholism, all that shit, right, and well when it happened.
- 22:27Since that, since then, Charlie has been doing everything he could to
- 22:33like basically honor that, like if you do this, I will be the
- 22:36best person I can be, right, And he sees that he sees helping
- 22:41mister Bowdich as his way of giving back to what was given to him,
- 22:45which was his dad and some semblance of their of their old life, you
- 22:52know. Like, so he he ends up working with mister Bodich. Let's
- 22:59see, I'm gonna pull up my notes because I have notes do afterposed during
- 23:18that period basically like when he got back to the house, Charlie of course
- 23:30re fortified the house to be able to have mister Bodich live in the bottom
- 23:36floor of the house and the multiple floors. That's when Charlie also learns about
- 23:40the gold that Howard has mysteriously for some fucking reason. Why gold? Yeah,
- 23:48yeah, so it's it's a whole bucket of these like little gold pellets,
- 23:55and mister Bota would he would trade it to like a jeweler in one
- 24:03of the neighboring towns. Uh. And that's pretty much how he's been.
- 24:07That's pretty much where his like all of his income comes from. And over
- 24:12the over this period of UH providing for mister botiche he Charlie begins noticing some
- 24:22weird like some things that are off about mister Botach, like even though he
- 24:29has a very old TV, he just seems very out of touch with the
- 24:32modern with the modern world, and even some things like yeah, there's there.
- 24:36He's met old people before, but they seem to have a general like
- 24:38a general idea of how things are nowadays, but mister Botage seems to be
- 24:42like way out of touch. And then of course there was the dealings with
- 24:51the jeweler that mister Botich Charlie do for him. Since it was pretty much
- 24:56getting around the time that mister botiche needed to change UH cash in some more
- 25:00of the gold for money, he has Charlie do it for him, and
- 25:06it was kind of Charlie thought, man, this is sucks because like he
- 25:11it's very like under the table. And he goes to the jeweler to trade
- 25:15the gold for some cash and UH to pay the hospitals hostile bills as well
- 25:22as other expenses he needed. But the jeweler is very much like, you
- 25:26have more gold I ever seen this much? You have more? Where'd you
- 25:30get? Where do you get from? Kid? Where do you get?
- 25:33Like, come on, man, you can trust me, tell me where
- 25:36he got it? And Charlie's like, oh no, this is this is
- 25:38sucks. Just give me the money and I'll get ahead of my way.
- 25:42But then, like not too long after that dealing, he finds out that
- 25:45that said jeweler was murdered in his store and the killer is still on the
- 25:52loose, so like oopsie, well I wouldn't say oopsie, but uh oh
- 25:56well, And it's seems like there's just a little little things about mister Botitch
- 26:03and how and how he lives that are like really off putting to Charlie,
- 26:08and it's confusing for him, but he just rolls with it for them for
- 26:14the time being. Eventually, mister bootage health does somewhat improve. He's able
- 26:19to move around the house a lot more easily until a commotion comes from this
- 26:26large shed and Votach's backyard. Now, this shed has been an issue since
- 26:33the beginning because it's been doing some creepy noises and scratching that's happened a few
- 26:37times. Charlie's taking care of radar as well as the house. Mister Botage
- 26:45is away, so that shed. By the point this happens, Charlie has
- 26:49like a what the fuck is in that goddamn shed? Right? And it
- 26:59was it's it was like pretty much a the like I say it. Let's
- 27:03say about like four or five months after Bodich came home. Uh, something
- 27:07began to really scratch and like russell around inside the shed and Bowdich he freaks
- 27:15out. He tells Charlie to take radar inside and Bodich he comes, he
- 27:22comes out, He comes out of the house. He had grabbed his really
- 27:26old Revolu model revolver and he had he had this leather belt strapped on and
- 27:33he goes into the shed. H Charlie hears a commotion inside the shed and
- 27:40hears a gunshot. And when mister Botach comes out, mister Bodich is looking
- 27:44very very worn out. He looks sickly and like, I think like the
- 27:51excitement was too much for him. And a few days later, mister Bowdich
- 27:56unfortunately passes away from a heart attack. But before he dies, Botage had
- 28:00recorded and left a tape for Charlie to listen to. Now hold up hold
- 28:08up, Hold up, it kind of kind of skipped around a little bit
- 28:12to review because the recording kind of skipped up a little bit, skipped over
- 28:18a certain part. SMIs Brow just dies of a heart attack a few days
- 28:21later after dealing with that insect insect toy that they see in the shed.
- 28:26Hold up, you're gonna yeah. So when he dies, he not only
- 28:30leaves Charlie a tape explaining everything all the weird the weird occurrences that have happened
- 28:37with the shed, but also about Howard's life itself. Uh. Charlie is
- 28:42also shocked to find out that mister Bodach left a will and pretty much willed
- 28:48everything to Charlie, the dog, the house, everything in it, and
- 28:55everything in the and the property itself, and since Charlie is underage, it
- 28:59had to be put in a trust until he comes of a until he turns
- 29:02eighteen, but he ends up listening. So when he inherits the house,
- 29:07he ends up listening to the tape mister Bowtache left for him, and then
- 29:17the tape Boatis recounts a very wild to Charlie, a very wild tale to
- 29:25be cool, excuse me, revealing that he's old as fut he's actually one
- 29:33hundred and twenty years old and locked inside the shed is actually a portal to
- 29:40another world. And so this portal it takes the form of a something it
- 29:45looks kind of like a well, but inside the well is a spiral staircase
- 29:51and if you go right down into the well. Now and the recording he's
- 29:55more. He has more details about like how many steps, what you need
- 29:57to do when you go down the wall, everything. But when once you
- 30:00go down the well, it takes you to another world. And in this
- 30:07world exists a magical kingdom, and inside the kingdom's capital is a is a
- 30:14sun dial, and this sun dial is was it was the secret to mister
- 30:19Bowditch's longevity. He reveals that world is also the source of the gold that
- 30:26he had been using to uh, you know, supplement his income, but
- 30:33as a source of his income. But the thing is is that this gold
- 30:37is there's something about this gold that causes like extreme amounts of greed because when
- 30:44Charlie Discuss realizes that the gold is there, he kind of has this habit
- 30:48of looking at it and often like running the gold through his fingers because they're
- 30:52just like little gold pellets, so he'll just like be like playing around with
- 30:56the gold and everything. So it does definitely has some odd effect on people.
- 31:04After mister uh, mister Botage's death and Charlie inherits the house, the
- 31:11house experiences a break in. There's no nothing was stolen as far as he
- 31:17could tell, but uh, it was very It did freak him out,
- 31:22and him and his father end up fixing up the house and getting everything in
- 31:26order to make sure that doesn't happen again. Now just uh, after Charlie
- 31:34learns of mister Brotage's longevity, he decides that he wants to see it for
- 31:41himself. So Charlie decides to take a trip down into down into the well.
- 31:48Now he doesn't does he take Yeah, he takes Radar with him right
- 31:52the first time when he goes when he goes down the well, I don't
- 32:00think. I'm trying to remember if he if he did go because I think
- 32:05because I think he did go down the wall the first but I don't know
- 32:07if he brought it, brought Radar with him, because I remember him talking
- 32:13about when he first brought Radar. He was worried that Radar was going to
- 32:15slip and fall, but she didn't. I don't know. I don't think
- 32:21he brought her down the first time, because I think he went down there
- 32:23to see what the hell's up and then he's like, oh shit, and
- 32:27then he went back. I think he went back up right away and then
- 32:30planned his journey accordingly, right so real quick. I kind of wanted to
- 32:37backtrack because when Charlie was listening to the to the tape, there was about
- 32:44halfway through the tape, mister Bodage tells him to pause, to pause right
- 32:49here and go into the going to the shed and see for himself what he
- 32:54was dealing with, because this is in reference to the thing that had caused
- 33:00the commotion inside the shed and that mister Bodae shot. Yeah, So Charlie
- 33:05goes into the shed. He sees the well, but he also sees this
- 33:08massive cockroach. I know, I was like, oh no, no,
- 33:15no, no, no, no, no, Please tell me we're not
- 33:15gonna be dealing with with giant cockroaches for the rest of the book. But
- 33:21it was a giant cockroach. And he notices that the cockroach had already looked
- 33:24like it had decayed, had been decaying for months, even though the incident
- 33:30concerning the cockroach happened a few days before, and he goes back. He
- 33:36listens to the rest of the tape and mister Bodhach reveals that our world is
- 33:40toxic to anything that comes from that world. So like the atmosphere, I
- 33:45guess our atmosphere is corrosive to them or just causes rapid degeneration. So anything
- 33:51that comes from the well will die in a matter of hours, if not
- 33:54in a matter of days, and eventually their body, its body will just
- 34:00decay and just disappear. So that's what Charlie saw in the in the shed.
- 34:07He listens to the rest of the tape and then going forward, we
- 34:10have a few other incidents. He decides to take a quick trip down into
- 34:15the well to see what he's dealing with. He follows mister Bodhache's instructions and
- 34:22going down into the well, he was told make sure not to like bring
- 34:29a lot I think he did have to like at one point turn off of
- 34:31his like any kind of like if he brings a flashlight, he has to
- 34:35turn it off because at one point there because once he gets to the bottom
- 34:43of the staircase, he's gonna come out into a massive cavern. And in
- 34:46this cavern he'll not only find the cock broaches, but also an entire nest
- 34:53of bats, big ones too. We're talking giant. Yeah, there,
- 35:00We're not talking like the size of like the the flying fox type bats.
- 35:05We're talking something bigger. And so he knew like at a certain point he
- 35:09has to turn off his light and just be quiet as possible, not to
- 35:13stir the bats. But he gets the to the entrance of the cavern and
- 35:17it's covered by a bunch of vines. So once he pushes through the vines,
- 35:21he's met with an entire field of these red poppies, these red poppy
- 35:27flowers exactly like mister Bowdish explained described in the book in his recording, and
- 35:34he sees off in the distance a little house. He doesn't go into the
- 35:37house. He he doesn't go down to the house. He just wait,
- 35:42does he I feel like he does? Yeah? He does. Yeah,
- 35:50he did meet Dora, because he meets Dora first. That yeah, okay,
- 35:54okay. So he decides to take a little stroll through the poppy field,
- 35:59and he remembered what mister Bidage said in the recording that there's a little
- 36:02house and the person living there, Miss Dora is very kind. She'll give
- 36:08you Uh, she's a very kind person. Just don't be just just don't
- 36:13be. H. Well, I don't even think he just he, I
- 36:16don't think mister Biltage knew of like the sickness that I've been affecting the very
- 36:22the this other world. But when Charlie sees the uh this woman her name
- 36:31is Dora, he shocked to see that she's actually very like she's very deformed.
- 36:37Like her her skin is uh a his turn completely gray. She has
- 36:44these lumps and like her skin, her face, her whole body is just
- 36:50lumpy and miss uh and misformed. And because of that, it's preventing her
- 36:55from actually talking. So even though she's able to, like the pretty must
- 37:00go about her day like normal. Uh it's it's it type. He learns
- 37:05that that he'll soon learn that this world is affected by some sort of light
- 37:12or curse that causes its natives to turn, to begin to decay and turn.
- 37:17It's called I think it's called like what the gray death or something I
- 37:22think or just the gray Yeah. Yeah, so the sickness is off is
- 37:30commonly referred to as the gray causes people, just the common people to turn
- 37:36like their skin to turn gray. Their body begins to become malformed, and
- 37:43they slowly learned lose their ability to speak and function coherently until they die.
- 37:51Until they eventually die. It doesn't affect charge. The gray doesn't affect Charlie
- 37:57and as well learn Slater on the book, it doesn't. It doesn't affect
- 38:00members of the royal family. So people of a certain bloodlight are unaffected by
- 38:07the gray. And after Charlie speaks to Dora for a bit and she gives
- 38:15she gives him some food, he goes back up the goes back up the
- 38:20well, but when he comes back out of the shed, he is accosted
- 38:24by a man with a gun. So this yeah, so this dude,
- 38:35Uh, this was the same guy that broke into mister Bodage's house a few
- 38:40days before. Yeah, and he, although it was never confirmed, it
- 38:46was also implied that he was the man who murdered the jeweler. And the
- 38:53reason why he has uh, the reason why he is targeted Charlie is because
- 39:01he figured out that Charlie is in possession of the gold that was sold at
- 39:09the jewelers. So he threatens Charlie with a gun and tries to convince Charles
- 39:16and tells Charlie to show him where the gold is. Charlie acquiesces and leads
- 39:24him up to where the vault is, but he manages to distract his would
- 39:30be gunman his would be his would be murder, and manages to disarm him,
- 39:38getting the gun from the from his attacker, and he leads the guy
- 39:44back out towards the shed and he tells the guy basically to fuck off,
- 39:47but not before he not before Charlie breaks this man's wrists and sends him on
- 39:55his unhappy way. Yeah, later on, uh, Like, later on,
- 40:04Charlie like he does feel a little bit of regret for just basically he
- 40:12does feel a little regret for basically just breaking this dude's risks and sending him
- 40:19out on his way without like alerting the authorities and without like making sure the
- 40:22guy gets medical help, because later on he learns that the guy was found
- 40:27dead. So Charlie does feel a little bit of guilt because since like he
- 40:34broke the dude's wrists, I guess the guy wasn't able to defend for himself
- 40:37and he ends up dying. I think it's because that guy ended up getting
- 40:40mugged by someone else and they end up killing him. And since his wrists
- 40:44were broken, he didn't have his gun. Yeah, because he because Charlie
- 40:49did take the man's gun too, and so he did. He did feel
- 40:54like a little bit of regret for that, but at the same time,
- 41:00he's like, now, fuck that guy who would have killed me. And
- 41:07beyond that, Charlie begins making his plans to take a trip through the fairytale
- 41:13world because one thing that Charlie just does not want to lose is Radar.
- 41:20So Radar, like we've like we've established earlier, is a very old dog.
- 41:23She's like about fourteen fifteen years old at this point. She's at the
- 41:28end of her life. And well, Charlie, he became really attached to
- 41:35this dog and he really didn't want to let her go just yet. And
- 41:38since he learned that, since he learned from mister Bowditch that there is a
- 41:43magical sun dial in the other world that can basically reverse time around a person
- 41:52and make them younger, Charlie thought, well why not, So he ends
- 41:59up making plans to go down into the well. He takes Radar and some
- 42:04supplies down into the well and decides to make a journey to the Sundal.
- 42:10So he makes his plans. He waits for his dad to be out of
- 42:14town because his dad goes on a week long trip and he wants he wants
- 42:20to try to make it there to the Sundal and back before his dad gets
- 42:25back. He packs up. You make sure it packs up Radar. He
- 42:30brings a I think he tries he either brings one or he tries to bring
- 42:34like a wagon down there for her, or I think that's I think Dora
- 42:37ends up giving him a wagon, right, I think Dora gives him a
- 42:40wagon. Yeah, So you just make sure to bring everything he can to
- 42:45accommodate to accommodate Radar, especially since she needs medicine to help with her arthritis
- 42:52and everything. And he makes a journey, he make sures he makes sure
- 42:58to lock up the house and everything else before he makes his way down into
- 43:02the well. Uh. He stays the night with Dora. Uh. Radar
- 43:07is extremely was extremely excited to see Dora like as the first time that Charlie
- 43:15sees Radar acts pretty much like a younger dog. She gets very excited when
- 43:21she sees Dora. Dora makes sure to help accommodate him and gives him some
- 43:25extra supplies. She also makes her request of him because the only way now,
- 43:30just really quick, the only way that Dora can actually talk to him
- 43:34is by writing, so she will write. She'll just basically write on a
- 43:39notepad for him, telling him like what's like what she wants to say to
- 43:43him. And she also gives gives him a wagon for Radar because since poor
- 43:52Radar she's too old to really make such a long distance journey. The uh
- 44:00Charlie ends up carrying Radar along in the little wagon. Dora makes her requests
- 44:08of Charlie. She gives him a little like it's like a like a token,
- 44:16yeah, for him to give to any travelers he finds. Because the
- 44:21thing is, Dora and her brother they have this deal where they any travelers
- 44:29in need of new shoes, they just give their old shoes to Dora's brother
- 44:32who will repair them, and then Dora will make sure to provide them with
- 44:39a new pair of shoes. And you know, it's really sweet. They
- 44:45do everything they can. It's really sweet that they do everything they can to
- 44:47help people that are traveling, especially because they see a lot of travelers coming
- 44:52from the direction of the Emerald City. Oh wait, hold up, hold
- 44:58up, what was the name of the actual city? Uh? The city
- 45:02was named was the the world of the world. It's the world, the
- 45:10world, yes, city is no, okay, so the world so the
- 45:19magic. So this other world is actually called Empis and the city itself is
- 45:25called Lamar. Yeah, so the thing is Lila. Charlie slowly learns that
- 45:35a long time ago Froum the time which was like around the time that mister
- 45:39Bodach made his last journey into into Empus. Uh, there was a basically
- 45:47a collapse of society. And after this collapse a that was when the gray
- 45:58began to affect the land. And it all started in the city in the
- 46:04road, in the capital city of Lillomar. And so people have been for
- 46:09for like decades now, have been fleeing the surrounding area of Lillomar and trying
- 46:15to make their and trying to escape the gray. So as more people continue
- 46:21to travel past doors home, she tries to provide them with anything they need,
- 46:27especially fresh pairs of shoes, because you know, this is a this
- 46:30is a fantasy setting, this is a world set in like times, like
- 46:36kind of like a medieval time, or I would say this is more of
- 46:39like a Renaissonian style setting. Agreed, Agreed, it's not medieval, but
- 46:46it's like definitely more Renassonian. And so she made so of course, like
- 46:53you're they can't just go into a famous footwear and buy new shoes. So
- 46:59she tries to make sure that all the travelers have any travelers that come by
- 47:02have a fresh pair of shoes. Yeah, which is it's kind of cute,
- 47:07think it's sweet. Yeah, and her brothers are one that repairs or
- 47:10her cousins the one that repairs them. Yep. So she sends Charlie on
- 47:15his way, but she tells Charlie to first had to uh Like basically,
- 47:23she she tells him of several places that he can stop for the night because
- 47:30it's not safe to travel at night, especially because there are wolves. No,
- 47:37they only come out at night, these wolves. There's something off about
- 47:40these wolves. I don't think we actually see them. No, I think
- 47:44they act actually ever give a description of them, but they just say that
- 47:49there's something you can't get the found that something off about them. Yes,
- 47:53So she tells him to base first stop is to is for the I think
- 48:00she's called she was called the Goose Lady or something. It's the Goose Lady.
- 48:08Yeah. So, uh, just to kind of like condense the next
- 48:16several parts, because this next part from traveling from Doris House to the city
- 48:22of Lolomar, it's pretty long because it takes him several days to finally get
- 48:28to Lilamar. But when he does, along the way, he makes stops
- 48:35and takes shelter with members of the former Royal House of the Galleon. Yeah.
- 48:40So these uh, these uh, these Galleon family members, they are
- 48:46all living in exile. They they once ruled the city of Lilamar, but
- 48:52when the collapse happened, they were forced into exile, and each of them
- 48:55bears a very peculiar curse. So if it's the same curse, but the
- 49:00curse affects them in different ways. It robs them of one of their five
- 49:06senses or like something like that. Yeah, it's something of their senses hearing,
- 49:13sight, smell, well, no one has smelled, thank god,
- 49:16it'd be weird. So yeah, we only encounter three members, well four
- 49:20technically, but the fourth one we'll get to later. But the three members
- 49:24that we do encounter. Who are on the or who are the good guys?
- 49:29Would be a girl named Leah. So Leah, she is affected.
- 49:35The way the curse affected her is that it basically took away her ability to
- 49:42speak. But the problem is is that it didn't just like strip her of
- 49:46her voice like Little Mermaid style. It took away her mouth. Yeah,
- 49:52so where her mouth should be, it's just like a blank space. There's
- 49:58like a little like spot two I think on the look like basically where the
- 50:04like on the either on the left or right side of her face, where
- 50:07the corner of her lips would be. And she has to basically pierce that
- 50:15little spot to open a hole up in her mouth so that way she can
- 50:21Yeah, so she can. So she's able, so she can be able
- 50:23to like get food and sustenance, but she has to drink liquefied mulched like
- 50:31liquified food because she doesn't have a mouth. The way she talks is by
- 50:37projecting her voice through a horse of all things right, and so basically she
- 50:45puppets or like ventriloquists her way through speaking. But it's very it's very difficult
- 50:51for her, so she doesn't do it very often. She tells Charlie a
- 50:54little bit about the of what its exactly happened to Emphis, but she doesn't
- 51:01go into too much detail. Eventually, she sends him on his way and
- 51:06tells him to make his next stop at her uncle. Her uncle's house a
- 51:13man named Stephen Woody Woodley Woody now Woody. He is like her as a
- 51:22member of the royal family, and his the curse that affects him completely took
- 51:27away his sight, so where his eyes should be are just empty sockets.
- 51:36And he tells Charlie Moore about the history of Emphis, but he confirms that
- 51:42the let me see here. He learns that Emphis was taken over by a
- 52:00he's basically in a new surper who calls himself that flight Killer. And there
- 52:07and the flight Killer is the reason why the gray has come and why people
- 52:13have why the royal family have been forced out of the city of Lilamar.
- 52:16He's basically he's it's hinted that he is the big bad but at the same
- 52:22time there's also mentions of something else. They hints that there's something beneath the
- 52:34city of Lilamar that has been slumbering, and they fear that flight Killer's role
- 52:38may cause it to wake up. And I'm like when I first, when
- 52:44I first, like when they hinted at this, I'm like, oh,
- 52:49so we're dealing with like a sleeping giant or like some sort of demon.
- 52:54Okay, okay, even yeah, yeah, I didn't really like think it
- 53:02would be a terror at first. Oh my god, I go, I'm
- 53:07sorry, I gotta go, like sorry, hang on, do I have
- 53:12any No, I like, don't, damn it. My allergies are starting
- 53:16to act up, and I'm like no, and I ran. I ran
- 53:20out of allergy pills. The brand that I use is like really expensive,
- 53:28but whatever. I'm just sniffling right now. Anyway, So, like I
- 53:31was saying, uh, at first, I didn't realize, like, uh,
- 53:38I didn't realize it was like an Eldric like some sort of terror,
- 53:42like Eldric terror, but hints that flight Killer is actually serving some other dark
- 53:47force, like some sort of dark entity. Throughout the Throughout the book,
- 53:53Charlie like remembers stories that his mom told him about, like some ancient evil
- 53:58called Gogma Gog magogg magog uh huh uh. It isn't until Charlie comes to
- 54:10like he leaves Woody's house the next day and he finally makes it to well,
- 54:15he doesn't really make it to the city. Uh. The thing about
- 54:20Lilamar is that and the surrounding UH town and the town surrounding it. It's
- 54:25huge, Like Lilamar is massive. It's a massive city, and even like
- 54:36in the area surrounding it, it's like miles, like miles and miles of
- 54:42lads stretching between Lilamar and UH. The last house that Charlie makes a stop
- 54:50at, and that is the house of I believe she's like a cousin,
- 54:54like a like a distant cousin of Leah's. Her name is claus Adia,
- 55:00Yes, Claudia, so Claudia. The way the purse affects her is that
- 55:08it took away her hearing, and the way it did that was by like
- 55:15where her ears should be, there's just nothing gone, so she has no
- 55:22ears. She's completely deaf, and whenever she talks, she yells, so
- 55:28it's always like she's always yelling, and it's kind of hilarious. Charlie has
- 55:31I think Charlie has to either like write what he wants to tell her down
- 55:36just so she knows what he's talking about h and she like the other like
- 55:45Leah and what he provided him with food and supplies. She provides him with
- 55:51a little bit of extra stuff so that way he can make us. That
- 55:53way he can make his journey into the city and back without any issues.
- 55:59She even goes so far as to provide Charlie with a motorized tricycle, and
- 56:07which was confusing to Charlie because when he got to the when he got into
- 56:13Emphasis, all of his electronic devices like his phone, and I think it,
- 56:16well, I don't think he's a He brought a flashlight, but his
- 56:20phone immediately died. And uh. She said that that Bodich had brought the
- 56:29had brought the motor down into Emphas, but he had charged it from there.
- 56:35So I guess like in order for machinery to like electronics to work,
- 56:39it has to be like built in uh Emphis itself, so he had,
- 56:46so basically he had. She gives him an electric motorized trike and it has
- 56:52a nice big basket in it for Radar to ride in. I should also
- 57:00really quick just take a quick step back, because so like along the way
- 57:06on his travels, he does encounter this little man I don't know exactly what
- 57:12he is. I think he was either a leprechaun or something, or some
- 57:15little grimlin. I don't know. He Charlie gets on this dude's shit list
- 57:21because the guy was torturing a big ass cricket. Yeah, and Charlie didn't
- 57:28like that. I mean, yeah, it was a big ass cricket,
- 57:30like huge, but he at the same time he was like, Charlie was
- 57:35like, man, you either killed the damn thing or you don't. Don't
- 57:38It's he had this really strong sense that what this guy was doing to the
- 57:43cricket was wrong. So he tells the guy to fuck off and threatens him,
- 57:46but this guy tells him like, oh, you've made a big mistake
- 57:50here. And the reason why I mentioned this guy is because this guy will
- 57:52cause problems for Charlie later on down the line, but we'll get to that
- 58:00later. Charlie, now equipped with the motor with the motor trike and some
- 58:07extra supplies from Claudia, makes his way to the gates of Lilmar. He
- 58:15had been given instructions by I think it was either Woody or Claudia that once
- 58:20he gets to the gate, he must he must shout to the gate,
- 58:27call out to the gate open in the name of Leah the Galleon, because
- 58:31Leah is the heir to the throne and she I guess her name carries power,
- 58:37but she They tell him that from Claudia's house, don't go directly into
- 58:43the city, because by the time he reaches the gate from Claudia's house,
- 58:47it will already be the day will be over. Even with his even with
- 58:53the trischool, takes them an entire day just to reach the gate, and
- 59:04so they tell him take shelter in this tram station like tram house just outside
- 59:09the gate and wait for morning to go into the city and then come back
- 59:14out. He was given detailed instructions of how to navigate the city. So
- 59:21come the next morning, he sets out early and he goes up to the
- 59:25gate, calls out open in the name of Lea the Galleon, and the
- 59:30gate opens, and the thing is leading up to the gate. When he
- 59:38first lays eyes on the city of Li Lamar, he gets his sensation of
- 59:43wrongness, like there's something off about the city, like something is twisting it
- 59:49into some sort of weird, dark shadow of what the city was originally supposed
- 59:55to be. And it's when it's when it gets to this part in the
- 1:00:00book, when it's describing the sensation he's feeling concerning the city, I'm like,
- 1:00:05oh my god, this was the pump in the moment where I was
- 1:00:07like, oh my god, there's an Eldrich's Terror in the city. There
- 1:00:13sure is, And yeah, we would later be proven right, Uh,
- 1:00:20there doesn't, don't there doesn't. Really. I don't think they really confirmed
- 1:00:23what the elder Terror was like really called. But he does say, Charlie
- 1:00:29Leader does say, make the mistake of saying its name Gogmagog while he was
- 1:00:36in the city, and the entire city groans like something was shifting underneath it,
- 1:00:44or like the whole city itself shifted it. So it heavily implies like
- 1:00:50that that the name of the creature is called Gogmagog and if you value your
- 1:00:57if you wanted to stay asleep, shut the fuck up, and does its
- 1:01:00name. But yes, So he finally makes it into the city and following
- 1:01:07the instructions given to him by by the royal family, he makes his way
- 1:01:15through the city. He also has some help from mister Bowdiche because when mister
- 1:01:22Bodache used to travel through the city he had actually marked. He actually left
- 1:01:27Marx throughout the city, so whenever Charlie would find see the marks, he
- 1:01:35knew he was going in the right direction. And h and at one point,
- 1:01:45remembering the instructions from both mister Bowditch and the Galleon family, he comes
- 1:01:52across an actual giant. I believe her name was Hannah. Hannah. Yep.
- 1:02:05So Hannah was left by flight Killer to guard the way to the Sundial
- 1:02:14because sundial is seen as an important artifact. And he does manage to sneak
- 1:02:23his way past Hannah. He had to, he had to do it quietly
- 1:02:29without the engine of his tricycle on, and he does make it through.
- 1:02:35Uh. When he gets past Hannah, he comes across the garden where the
- 1:02:38sundial is, and inside the garden there's also a fountain, and unfortunately,
- 1:02:44inside the fountain, the fountain actually was home to a mermaid, good mermaid
- 1:02:49and we're not we're not talking about evil siren. We're talking about a good,
- 1:02:52friendly mermaid. But unfortunately the good friendly mermaid was was was ceased.
- 1:03:00Yeah, that was the part was sad, the way to describe that.
- 1:03:05Yeah, even later when Charlie tells h Leah and the other Galleon family members
- 1:03:12about this. They were heartbroken because the the mermaid was good, was good,
- 1:03:16so it was an innocent creature. But we'll later we later find out
- 1:03:22that it was actually killed by Hannah's half giant daughter, Mollie. And that
- 1:03:34was her name, Mollie something like that and uh Molly. So yeah,
- 1:03:44so Stealeya's nerves. He goes to the sundial and he places radar radar on
- 1:03:52it, and remember following the instructions from uh mister Bodich, he turns the
- 1:04:01dial. I think he has to turn it counterclockwise in order to reverse time,
- 1:04:08and he has to remember not to let it turn too many times because
- 1:04:12then he may end up taking too much time off of a radar. So
- 1:04:17it could be a chance that he risks he runs the risks of completely reverting
- 1:04:25radar back down to you know, pre existence. Oh my god, my
- 1:04:32analogies are really like acting up now. They all congested, no shit,
- 1:04:38sorry, So he turns I think he ends up turning the dial like about
- 1:04:45nine, like somewhere between nine, like fourteen times or something like that.
- 1:04:48Like he it as he turns it, it begins to spend faster and faster,
- 1:04:54to the point where he pretty much loses control of it, and towards
- 1:04:58the end of it, he notices that Radar is becoming more active, like
- 1:05:01you can't see her properly because of how fast the dollal begins to turn.
- 1:05:05But eventually Radar comes to her senses and she ends up jumping off the dial
- 1:05:11on her own. And when she jumps off of it, she is a
- 1:05:15She has a dog in her prime. She's no longer this elderly dog.
- 1:05:18She is young. She's sprightly and very very active. So good for Charlie,
- 1:05:28he got he did what he came there to do. So he decides,
- 1:05:32all right, we've wasted enough time to We've wasted good amount of the
- 1:05:38day trying to get here. Let's get the fuck out of here before it
- 1:05:41gets too dark. So Charlie and Radar they make their way back past Hannah's
- 1:05:51house and through the city. But it's but he soon realizes that the marks
- 1:05:59that mister Bodha which had left behind were gone. So the things that he
- 1:06:04was so, the marks that he used to make his way through the city
- 1:06:09to the Sundial, they were long gone. He didn't. He at first
- 1:06:14doesn't know why, but eventually he figures it out. So as he's trying
- 1:06:18to find his way through, he runs into that same little man that was
- 1:06:23torturing that that was torturing the cricket, and apparently the dude was so pissed
- 1:06:33off. The dude was, you know, so petty that Charlie did that,
- 1:06:40that he followed Charlie into the city and began erasing all the marks that
- 1:06:45that mister Bodage left behind. So uh, then he leaves Charlie there,
- 1:06:51and now Charlie is thoroughly lost in the city of Lilamar. Li Lamar is
- 1:06:57very like I said, is very big, and it's like a maze.
- 1:07:01Can easily get lost in the city. But Charlie figures out a way to
- 1:07:06get back to the front gate. He climbs us I believe he climbs a
- 1:07:11statue, and he gets his bearings from the city and manages to navigate his
- 1:07:16way through the city. And at one point he ends up going through a
- 1:07:21cemetery, which a lot of people had told him don't go through the cemetery
- 1:07:27because the cemetery because after everything was said and done, Flight Killer had disturbed
- 1:07:34the dead and the dead or not happy, and they almost trapped Charlie in
- 1:07:43the cemetery, but he manages to get out. Unfortunately, by the time
- 1:07:45he makes it to the gate, the sun has already set. And excuse
- 1:07:58me, hold uh so when the sun So, Charlie had been warned that
- 1:08:05he needs to get out of the city before dark because the city is patrolled
- 1:08:09at night by them, by the Night Soldiers, by an army of the
- 1:08:13the undead called the Night Soldiers, and he doesn't and they tell him,
- 1:08:18don't get caught by the Knight Soldiers because then that's it. Uh. And
- 1:08:24even though he's at the gate, the Night Soldiers know he's there, so
- 1:08:29as soon as the sun set, they immediately pounce on him. Uh.
- 1:08:33They were uh, they were all hiding in the Royal Palace at the center
- 1:08:39of the city, but they quickly make their way to the gate to catch
- 1:08:43Charlie. Charlie nearly escapes. He managed to get the gate open again and
- 1:08:49Radar got through, but before Charlie could, he is caught by the leader
- 1:08:55of the Night of the Knight Soldiers and he has taken into an underground prison
- 1:09:03called Deep Melene. It's there he spends I think he spends like the next
- 1:09:10several months being put in uh, being forced to take part in a form
- 1:09:16of Gladys Gladys world style tournament. Uh. So he spends like the next
- 1:09:23few months training for a bigger tournament called the Fair One. Now the Fair
- 1:09:30One is just like a sort of like, uh, it's just really a
- 1:09:35game to entertain flight Killer and the other nobles that took his side. And
- 1:09:45while he's while he's in prison, Charlie learns that flight Killer was actually Leah's
- 1:09:50brother Elden. Now Eldon was described to be as a excuse me, He's
- 1:10:02described as there it is. He's described as lame in the old sense where
- 1:10:13the word lame is used to describe somebody with deformities or like some form of
- 1:10:18handicaps. So I think like he was considered he was described as someone as
- 1:10:23very squat, He had a club foot, and he was not very attractive
- 1:10:28looking. But flight Killer or Elden was you could say he was mistreated by
- 1:10:36his family. The only person who trip who seemed to treat him with respect
- 1:10:42was his sister Leah. But flight Killer eventually got seduced by Gogmagog and kind
- 1:10:51of deal with him and ended up overthrowing the Galleant family and unleashing the Gray
- 1:10:57onto the people of and was good. I'm sorry, I was gonna look
- 1:11:04up something real quick there, man. Uh. So he spends the next
- 1:11:21few months training for the Fair One, and UH while he's there, while
- 1:11:30he's in prison underneath the in deep Millian, he begins to notice that his
- 1:11:41his brown hair and eyes are beginning to change color. So now his hair
- 1:11:46is turning blonde and his brown eyes begins to turn blue, and his other
- 1:11:53they fellow and his fellow inmates, I'll see that as a sign that he
- 1:11:57is becoming uh, their true prince and savior, because there's a prophecy that
- 1:12:01a prince will come and save them from the Gray and end the reign of
- 1:12:08end flight killers, reign of terror. Eventually, the Fair One begins.
- 1:12:14Charlie survives the first first round, but before the second round can begin,
- 1:12:21he and his remaining roommates they escape with the help of a warder named Percy.
- 1:12:30So the warders were people that were kept alive and they were used as
- 1:12:35servants, and one order named Percy. He would bring out food for the
- 1:12:42inmates, and he began to plot with Charlie. On way of escaping,
- 1:12:48he shows them away out of the of Deep Maline and they managed to escape
- 1:12:54into the street and they do escape the city and where he is reunited with
- 1:13:01Radar, Dora and the Galleyan family. Uh. They tell Charlie of Elden's
- 1:13:06past as the two youngest sibling Lea. Siblings, Leah and Elden were very
- 1:13:13close. Eldon, like I've said, was badly bullet Lea for his appearance
- 1:13:17of deformities. At some point, he discovers another well. So we had
- 1:13:23the well that led from Earth into Empus. Well, there's a well inside
- 1:13:27of the Royal Palace that leads into another world where uh, the evil creature
- 1:13:39God Magd is slumbering. Well slumbers of strong world a strong word. The
- 1:13:47deep Well leads into and like I said, leads into another world world where
- 1:13:53God Magogue is currently trapped. Now, they revealed to him that there's a
- 1:13:59prophecy where the Deep Wall will finally be opened, but it will only be
- 1:14:05opened when the two moons of Empis touch. So yep, it's called me.
- 1:14:15It was called wall either way, So it refers to a prophecy of
- 1:14:25when the two moons of Empis will eventually collide with each other. So when
- 1:14:30Charlie experiences his first night on Empis, he immediately realizes that one it has
- 1:14:38two moons, and two these two moons like literally race across the sky like
- 1:14:45they go from one end of the sky to the other in a matter of
- 1:14:46seconds. So the thing is is that I get this implies that the moons
- 1:14:54are not only orbiting very close to this, very close to the planet,
- 1:15:00to the world of Emphis, but they are also going very fast around the
- 1:15:03planet. Now, the two moons have never touched each other. Oftentimes they
- 1:15:10are like shown they can be seen in different positions in the sky, but
- 1:15:15they do. They do fly across the sky very close to each other,
- 1:15:21and eventually the two moons will eventually collide. And it's during this collision that
- 1:15:28Gogmagog will be able to come, that the deep Well will be opened and
- 1:15:33gog Gog can finally come into the world of Emphis. Now Eldon had opened
- 1:15:40the deep Well which led him, had opened the way to the Deep Wall,
- 1:15:45I should say, and had let him to becoming flight killer, attaining
- 1:15:49a power, attaining power as Gogmagog's puppet and cursing Emphis out of revenge for
- 1:15:54his mistreatment, so Charlie and the Galleon family and to return to Willemar and
- 1:16:00defeat Flight Killer before the moon's moons collide and allowing him to open the Deep
- 1:16:05Well once again. Leah is conflicted because she refused to believe that her young
- 1:16:14her brother Elden, had become flight Killer, but Charlie ultimately convinces her to
- 1:16:19join them. Uh. Leah leads them through the city back into the Royal
- 1:16:25into the Royal Palace. During the day. She Ah she leads them through
- 1:16:35the Royal Palace and surprisingly this is where like kind of like where the Magic
- 1:16:41of EMPHASI has seen more and more of how weird it and convoluted it is
- 1:16:45because even though the well is technically beneath the Royal Palace, the path that
- 1:16:50she takes them actually leads them to the like very top of the towers of
- 1:16:57the Royal Palace, which is kind of weird. But eventually they make it
- 1:17:00into the Deep Well and they find flight Killer, which waiting at its entrance.
- 1:17:06Just as the two moons collide, allowing the wells to open the wall
- 1:17:12to open. Leah sees flight Killer as he is, and except that he's
- 1:17:15become evil and she stabs him with her dagger before he is dragged into the
- 1:17:20well by Gogmagog and killed. Gogmagog begins to emerge from the well, but
- 1:17:27Charlie remember, he's reminded of the story of Rumpel Still Skin, which also
- 1:17:35referenced a lot in the story. Yeah, it's not just Rumpel Still Skin,
- 1:17:41but there have been plenty of other fairy tales referenced here, but Rumble
- 1:17:45Still Skin is like the one that's referenced the most, because he's references that
- 1:17:49like several times different characters for whatever reason. Yeah, and the importance of
- 1:17:57that is is because the way Rumples Still the story of Rumple Still Skin,
- 1:18:02he was causing mischief and he would have caused more mischief, and the only
- 1:18:05way to stop him was to correctly guess his name. And someone was able
- 1:18:11to guess his name because only because he made the mistake of saying it out
- 1:18:15loud when he thought he was alone, but somebody heard it, so when
- 1:18:18they told him his name, he was forced to stop. So it references
- 1:18:21how names have power. And when Charlie remembers the story of rumple still skin.
- 1:18:30He repeatedly declares its name, causing it to retreat back into the well
- 1:18:34and defeat. The well is then closed again and pretty much ends the curse
- 1:18:41upon emphiis the Gray. The curse of the Gray is stopped, so it
- 1:18:47will no longer spread. Leah, Claudia and what He they do begin to
- 1:18:56regain what they lost for Leah. Unfortunately, she actually gets her mouth back,
- 1:19:02not by defeating her brother and Gognagog, but she takes a knife and
- 1:19:09she actually jabs it into her mouth and she reopens it herself grows. It
- 1:19:17was implied that she tried that once before, but her mouth had immediately closed,
- 1:19:21but since the Gognagogue and flight Killer were defeated, her mouth will remain
- 1:19:28as it was. But now it's kind of gross because she she has her
- 1:19:31mouth back, but it's all scarred and ugly looking. And this is where
- 1:19:36I like towards since it's coming to the end of the story. This is
- 1:19:40where I referenced how like this the story was more realistic as a fairy tale,
- 1:19:45because what if fairy tales were more realistic. So Charlie, they returned
- 1:19:53back to they returned to the surface and Charlie announces their victory and proclaims Leah
- 1:19:58as their new queen. The thing is, Charlie had sustained some very severe
- 1:20:02injuries during their conflict uh with Gogmagog. I think, like what happened he
- 1:20:09broke his arm or like his arm got really fucked up by uh oh yeah
- 1:20:13yeah, So future Devin edit that last part the speculation out just now.
- 1:20:17But so flight Killer had uh several attendants and nobles who sided with him,
- 1:20:25and one of them was this really nasty chick. I don't even remember her
- 1:20:29name and she's not important, but she had filed her teeth down to like,
- 1:20:32uh like basically needle points. Gross it was. It was flight Killer's
- 1:20:42mistress mistress partner. Yeah yeah, she bit the ship out of Charlie's arm,
- 1:20:48and like she pour out a chunk of his arm. So he's missing
- 1:20:55a good chunk of muscle from like his elbow to like his mid arm that
- 1:20:59he won't have get back. And I'm like, I'm reading that, and
- 1:21:01I'm like, I can relate because I'm missing a chunk of my bone and
- 1:21:05my elbow. It's mid o, I can relate, yep. Uh.
- 1:21:12So Charlie ends up spending the next several weeks. I think he spends like
- 1:21:17like a month or so in recovery. Yeah, his hair and his eye
- 1:21:21reverts back to their brown color, and the citizens begin to rebuild the city.
- 1:21:28The thing is is that, like I said, like I was getting
- 1:21:31into earlier, even though the gray has been stopped and the curse on the
- 1:21:38Galleon family has been lifted, things just things don't immediately go back to the
- 1:21:42way it was. Claudia, she's slowly getting her hearing back, but it
- 1:21:48won't She won't get her her hearing back. And it's the same with Woody.
- 1:21:56Even though he does get his eyes back, he's still somewhat blind.
- 1:21:59And Leah has to live with her scarred lips, with her scarred mouth.
- 1:22:03Uh. And the people that were more severely affected by the gray, even
- 1:22:09though their bodies will recover from it, they will still permanently be scarred by
- 1:22:13it. So I'm like, you know what, Like when I was reading
- 1:22:15that, I'm like, Wow, that's more realistic, because if something like
- 1:22:18that were to happen in real in like the real world, it's not just
- 1:22:23going to go back to the way it was. There's still going to be
- 1:22:27scars. There's going to be they're going to have to live with like long
- 1:22:31lasting effects of it, of something like this disease. But either way,
- 1:22:39Charlie and Radar go back to h They do make it back to the well.
- 1:22:45They go back up, and when he returns to to his home,
- 1:22:54when he he gets back to Century's Rest, which is his hometown, he
- 1:23:00realizes he learns that he had been He had been gone way too long.
- 1:23:05He four months or so yep, for about four months and February twenty fourteen
- 1:23:13it was when he went back in. When he went down the well,
- 1:23:15it was like early fall, early min fall of twenty thirteen, and he
- 1:23:21had been declared reported missing while he was in Emphis, and he reunites with
- 1:23:27his father. In the epilogue, Charlie does take his dad down into from
- 1:23:33one last trip into Emphis to prove that to him that the existence of Emphis
- 1:23:41and that everything he told his dad was true, and believing him, his
- 1:23:45dad helps Charlie to permanently seal up the well so that way no one can
- 1:23:49ever go down in it again. And it does end like there's like a
- 1:23:56good like it does flat fast forward. I think out like nine to ten
- 1:24:00years into the future, Radar is old again. It's like, Okay,
- 1:24:05well he got an extra nine years off of radar and he's like an English
- 1:24:11teacher now. And I believe he ended up selling the property. If not,
- 1:24:16he's no, I don't. I think he. His father's watching the
- 1:24:19property and then because I think he's gonna keep the property for like his retirement
- 1:24:25or whatever. But I think it. I don't think he. I think
- 1:24:27he kept it, but he's having his dad watch it in the meantime.
- 1:24:31Yeah. Yeah. And that Ladies and Gentlemen was fairy tale. Yep,
- 1:24:40it was. This is definitely, like I said, this is definitely one
- 1:24:43of my personal favorites of Stephen King, and definitely enjoyed it. I liked,
- 1:24:59oh sorry, go on, sorry, no, go ahead, go
- 1:25:00ahead, good No. I mean I like this book a lot too.
- 1:25:04I really enjoyed the steen Stephen King do something fantasy related. I mean,
- 1:25:12granted, I know he's done the Dark Tower series, but I haven't read
- 1:25:15any of those. I only heard what happens in those. But this is
- 1:25:20pretty lit now how he references, of course, the fairy tales. He
- 1:25:26went his brother's Graham rubble Stiltskin I mean all that Wizard of Oz, because
- 1:25:32I mean Emphis is basically Wizard of Oz mixed with Lovecraft. And he mentions
- 1:25:40Lovecraft a lot throughout the book, and I love that he makes a jab
- 1:25:45at r L sign at one point. It's great because you're because he's talking
- 1:25:51about I think Charlie was talking about a childhood friend of his, a girl
- 1:25:55that he was into that God meant reading books, and there's someone mentioned st
- 1:26:01He's like, I don't want to read something fake scary. I'm like,
- 1:26:03damn damn, because I know there's that few between r L sign and King,
- 1:26:11So yeah, damn uh. Yeah, I liked I liked it.
- 1:26:20He definitely took a different well, you know, he's always had like a
- 1:26:25lot of Kings stories do tend to like take a like they do incorporate low
- 1:26:33Craftian style entities because I never because like you know, aside from like you
- 1:26:41know, just some like more like psychological terrors, you know, you got
- 1:26:46it from Steeing from it, Penny you got penny Wise, which is basically
- 1:26:53it. Penny Wise is an is an outer creature, Like, yeah,
- 1:26:57they came from not from outer space, but from like outside the universe.
- 1:27:02Yeah, then of course the Dark Tower and all these other and a lot
- 1:27:06of his other stories do tend to take a I mean, he literally has
- 1:27:13a character that's literally the lovecrafting entity, a want of Lovecraft's creations without actually
- 1:27:20saying it's one of Lovecraft's creations, The Man in Black from the Dark the
- 1:27:25Man in Black from the Dark Tower series, that is the rolling chaos nihal
- 1:27:30afel tap oh okay. Hence why it's name the Man in Black. It's
- 1:27:35a reference to the Black Pharaoh and so he so technically a man blat is
- 1:27:40one of Lovecraft's creations, but he is an outright say it. He's just
- 1:27:44around causing chaos, making kids, having children left and right and shit.
- 1:27:48So there's a whole theory that carries one of his kids and all that shit.
- 1:27:54So yeah, I see King personally as a student of Lovecraft, like
- 1:28:00Lovecraft was a student was called himself a student of at graulm Po. So
- 1:28:04yeah, I love that he references Lovecraft a lot. He takes like inspiration
- 1:28:10from him and ship it makes my life a lot more fun reading his work
- 1:28:14and seeing the references, and I'm like, I know where that's from.
- 1:28:24Yeah, But anyway, that was Stephen King's fairy Tale. I do recommend
- 1:28:30it. It was good read. Just fair warning, it is long.
- 1:28:34It is pretty long. So yeah, it's definitely one of those books that
- 1:28:40you get a lot you do have spend a good chunk of time reading.
- 1:28:45And let's question one of those speed readers who can read like single like a
- 1:28:47big ass book like this one in like a day. I know people who
- 1:28:51can. That's a that's they're they're crazy. But it's a thing. I
- 1:28:56mean, I've done it. I've read a book. I've read an entire
- 1:28:59book in a day. But I don't like doing that because like I like
- 1:29:02to enjoy book and just take it in, you know so, but that's
- 1:29:09just me. Uh But anyway, I like to say thank you guys for

- 1:29:47for months that I haven't thought what we're gonna do afterwards. Well, we
- 1:29:51well cut this part. It's part out, Devin. I think we have
- 1:29:56two more episodes to make the finish out the rest of the year. I
- 1:30:00don't want to do a Christmas one. I do have that one Christmas one
- 1:30:03called The Visitor. I want a relatively short one once I can, I
- 1:30:11can, I can forefront that one. It's a little short. It's a
- 1:30:13Christmas one. Okay, Uh, what's the what's the What's another book I
- 1:30:20have that I've read that we haven't done as far as me I can get.
- 1:30:26I can let you borrow the Ring. You can read The Ring.
- 1:30:28We haven't done those books yet, and I've read the first one we've done.
- 1:30:35Hang on, let me look through my, let me pull my.
- 1:30:40We can always do the Lightning, Lightning Struck and Heart. The Lightning Struck
- 1:30:47Heart, you could do. We could do that one. Or we can
- 1:30:50also do Bear Otter and the Kid. Let's do Bear Otter and the Kid.
- 1:30:57All right, Okay, ladies and gentlemen, we are gonna go ahead
- 1:31:00and do another book by T. J. Klum. It is another gay
- 1:31:06romance novel called Bear Otter and the Kid, and no, it is not
- 1:31:12involve a burly hairy man, a skinny hairy man and for some reason a
- 1:31:21cowboy. No, it's it's actually a very cute story about it's very found
- 1:31:30family oriented family. We love that. Yeah. It is about a young
- 1:31:36man who is forced to raise his younger brother after their mother abandons them,
- 1:31:44and it's all about them coming together. Main character whose name is Bear,
- 1:31:51well that's not his real name. It's actually a nickname gave him, given
- 1:31:55to him by his younger brother. Bear falls in love with his best friend's
- 1:32:00brother and they come together they built their own family. It's just all about
- 1:32:05like it's sort of like a coming of age type story. There's just a
- 1:32:11lot of trials and a lot of heavy shit, but eventually they come together
- 1:32:18and they form their own family. It's very honestly, it's very wholesome and
- 1:32:25I'm pretty sure you guys will love it. So tune in next week we'll
- 1:32:28go ahead and review the first book of the Bear Otter and the Kid Chronicles
- 1:32:32and hopefully you'll enjoy it. But until then, bybe
