- 0:25Speaker 1: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:29Speaker 1: That's ten am for our friends in Depot Bay, Oregon
- 0:33Speaker 1: on Thursday, March thirteenth, and we're live for Meet Eater
- 0:35Speaker 1: HQ and Boasman, Montana. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart, joined
- 0:39Speaker 1: today by Corey Calkins and Randa Williams. On today's show,
- 0:43Speaker 1: we'll talk to Aaron mchelraith about how in Alberta City
- 0:47Speaker 1: Hayes's geese. Then we'll do one minute fishing with American
- 0:50Speaker 1: hero Pat Durkin. After that we'll play The Price Is Right,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and finally we'll talk to Joel Collander about some rare
- 0:57Speaker 1: guns from the Rock Island auction Randall, I was jealous
- 1:01Speaker 1: last week that you came up with a new bit
- 1:03Speaker 1: of shouting out a time zone? Would you do last week.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Hungry Hungary our friend mogor So.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I was inspired by that. Plus my favorite radio station
- 1:11Speaker 1: grown up as a kid, Kicking Country, would have the
- 1:12Speaker 1: South Dakota town of the day. So now I want
- 1:14Speaker 1: to shout out little towns or places that I really like,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and yeah, just give them a little not today. Deep Otbay, Oregon.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I've been there twice. It's the whale watching capital of Oregon.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And the one time I saw some whales right from
- 1:27Speaker 1: their dang main street. Real fun, fascinating, philed you ever
- 1:31Speaker 1: you like from that part of the world.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no. My family used to go to Deepot
- 1:34Speaker 3: Bay every summer. We would stay at the surf Righter
- 1:38Speaker 3: Inn just north of Deepot Bay. The most violently ill
- 1:42Speaker 3: I've ever been was on a whale watching tour that
- 1:44Speaker 3: went out of Deepot Bay. Also a fun fact. And
- 1:47Speaker 3: to kill not to kill a mockingbird?
- 1:49Speaker 2: What's the side of the mountain?
- 1:50Speaker 3: No, the mental institution. Oh yeah, I'm getting my birds
- 1:56Speaker 3: mixed up.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I thought you were talking about coming of age when they.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Go out on a boat on the ocean that was
- 2:01Speaker 3: shot in deep.
- 2:02Speaker 1: O Bay, world's smallest navigable harbor. I think they. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: think some win themselves out. Shout out Deepot Bay. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: love your little town you got there, koy Ran. What
- 2:12Speaker 1: you boys been up too lately?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Oh Man, not much?
- 2:16Speaker 2: Well, you know, I don't want to I don't want
- 2:19Speaker 2: to insert myself here, but it's been a good week
- 2:21Speaker 2: for uh Randall yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, now we can acknowledge that.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I want to there's an elephant in the room.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Twenty twenty four meat Eater Trivia champion.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And I see the support in the chat. I love it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Where uh, we'll be working on that randomal shirt. It
- 2:35Speaker 2: might be like a twenty twenty eight twenty nine project.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Dylan's asking for some clarification. Is it random les with
- 2:41Speaker 3: an I or randomals with an A? And I've got
- 2:43Speaker 3: a second point of clarification. Is it Randall moles. That's
- 2:46Speaker 3: a little that's kind of a mouthful, but to me
- 2:48Speaker 3: it makes more sense.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I don't envisioned randomals with an I like. I like
- 2:53Speaker 2: that rand animals. It should have been the animals.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Okay, next time you win cooy, which you've been up
- 2:59Speaker 1: too lately. Besides, you know Pat and Randall on the
- 3:03Speaker 1: back over here for winning.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Well, yeah, congrats, buddy, well deserved. You know, we just
- 3:07Speaker 4: wrapped up a couple of days with Taylor and Will
- 3:10Speaker 4: from busting with the boys.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Because I've ever heard of them, Yeah, I've seen those
- 3:14Speaker 1: tall fellers.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Yeah a tall.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Well, it's not that tall.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I mean tall the regular folks in the media to office.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess it's just that he hangs out tall.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I call myself six two, but posture wise probably five
- 3:28Speaker 2: eleven getunched. But when you say you're two hundred fifty
- 3:31Speaker 2: pounds five eleven, it gives off a very different impression,
- 3:34Speaker 2: so I go six to two.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're showing those boys around Montana while they're here.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Well a little bit.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Yeah, we had them out at the gun range getting
- 3:41Speaker 4: prepped and ready for a coyote hunt. They went out
- 3:43Speaker 4: with Steve. Was that yesterday morning? It was quite a
- 3:46Speaker 4: whirlwind while they were here. Oh, here's some good shots
- 3:48Speaker 4: when they went coyote hunting and beaver trapping with Steve yesterday.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Very successful on the beavers. They killed a pile of
- 3:58Speaker 4: muskrats as well while they were out there.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And smell it in the office. Still, Yes, as soon
- 4:01Speaker 1: as I walked in.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I tried spraying the poopery sent helper in here and
- 4:07Speaker 4: I can't really do it. But yeah, there's a good
- 4:09Speaker 4: photo of Cal there showing them the works on some
- 4:13Speaker 4: sig rifles. There's Steve flesh and a beaver looks like.
- 4:17Speaker 4: But yeah, showed those guys a great time. They got
- 4:20Speaker 4: to get their hands dirty. Didn't kill any coyotes. I
- 4:23Speaker 4: heard shots were fired, but no dogs were harmed in
- 4:26Speaker 4: the making of this fun time we had. But Steve
- 4:30Speaker 4: will be on their podcast next week listen for that,
- 4:34Speaker 4: and then there'll be some fun video content following that.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Not sure when, but in the near future, so keep
- 4:39Speaker 4: an eye out for that.
- 4:40Speaker 1: If you want more content with Steve and Meadeater, the
- 4:43Speaker 1: bust and Channel is going to have that soon. All right,
- 4:45Speaker 1: let's go to our first interview. Joining us on the
- 4:48Speaker 1: line now were two employees from the city of Lethbridge, Alberta,
- 4:52Speaker 1: who have a unique way of keeping geese off their lakes.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Aaron and Nelson. Welcome to the show.
- 4:58Speaker 6: Hi, thanks for having us.
- 5:00Speaker 1: First thing, tell us where you're standing right now.
- 5:04Speaker 7: Okay, we are at the beautiful Henderson Lake.
- 5:07Speaker 6: It's one of our premier parks in Lethtbridge.
- 5:10Speaker 7: It's one of my favorites because I've had the opportunity
- 5:13Speaker 7: to work here for many years. It has walking past
- 5:16Speaker 7: or the whole park and this beautiful body of water.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Historically there's been a dance hall and basically it's a
- 5:23Speaker 7: hub of activity winter and summer and leftbridge.
- 5:25Speaker 1: All right, now, tell us about the goose problem. That
- 5:28Speaker 1: your city parks have.
- 5:32Speaker 7: Okay, so we have some resident geese that have decided
- 5:36Speaker 7: they love living in Lethbridge and they don't want to
- 5:38Speaker 7: fly south like the rest of their friends do. So
- 5:41Speaker 7: the goose problems are basically we want to make sure
- 5:46Speaker 7: that we keep our waterfowl safe and so we like
- 5:49Speaker 7: them to keep moving on.
- 5:51Speaker 6: We want to keep people safe who use the parks.
- 5:53Speaker 7: There can be human goose conflict as well as with
- 5:56Speaker 7: people's pets, so we don't want.
- 5:58Speaker 6: That to happen.
- 6:01Speaker 7: We also want to make sure that we reduce the
- 6:03Speaker 7: fecal matter in the park. So one goose can look
- 6:06Speaker 7: up the two pounds in a day, that's a lot.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Of food, my goodness, kids.
- 6:11Speaker 6: In the park and a lot of activity.
- 6:14Speaker 7: So we want to try to keep our pathways clean
- 6:16Speaker 7: and free of that foo u. And then just making
- 6:19Speaker 7: sure that we protect our assets and our turfs. So
- 6:23Speaker 7: when geese feed, they can pull the roots of the
- 6:26Speaker 7: grass out and that can cause long term damage with
- 6:29Speaker 7: our turfs. So yeah, it's a multifaceted issue.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And in the past, what did you guys try to
- 6:35Speaker 1: keep these geese off your lakes and parks.
- 6:40Speaker 7: Well, at one point in time we had employees got
- 6:43Speaker 7: out with a dog. They went out to try to
- 6:47Speaker 7: deter the bees term being in the park, but then
- 6:49Speaker 7: it would just make the beast go on to the.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Lake and we couldn't do anything about that.
- 6:54Speaker 7: We've done some egg management with a Damaged Danger permit,
- 6:59Speaker 7: which is a federal hermit, and we really like we've
- 7:03Speaker 7: communicated a lot with the federal government under the Juice
- 7:05Speaker 7: Medice Plan and just trying to make really good decisions
- 7:08Speaker 7: about how to manage the population. But it's really tough
- 7:11Speaker 7: because basically they have a really perfect.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Environment to live here. It's safe, there's really.
- 7:18Speaker 7: No preserve here, and there's water, there's an island, So
- 7:23Speaker 7: it's really tough to manage here.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And that brings us to why we're talking to you today.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Tell us about how you decided to try to solve
- 7:31Speaker 1: that problem this year.
- 7:34Speaker 7: Well, I've wanted the guscinator for a really long time.
- 7:39Speaker 7: I kind of was researching best manag of practices and
- 7:43Speaker 7: this came up as a hazing device, so just trying
- 7:46Speaker 7: to make the area less popular.
- 7:50Speaker 5: For the geese.
- 7:51Speaker 6: And when I saw.
- 7:52Speaker 7: This working, I was just amazed by the fact that
- 7:54Speaker 7: I could work on the craft as well.
- 7:57Speaker 6: As in the water. So when we got the goal
- 8:01Speaker 6: had to purchase it.
- 8:02Speaker 7: We decided that Nelson, who's now management program, to get
- 8:08Speaker 7: good at operating it.
- 8:09Speaker 6: I kind of missed my chance to be the operator
- 8:11Speaker 6: by a year or two.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah, So we are looking at photos right now of
- 8:15Speaker 1: what is called the Gusinator. It is a large, bright
- 8:20Speaker 1: orange styrofoam like an RC car looking thing with a
- 8:25Speaker 1: couple of a couple of tracks underneath it, and it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: got big eyes and big mean teeth on it. Terify,
- 8:32Speaker 1: that's what they're telling us about, is the Goosinator. How
- 8:34Speaker 1: much did the Gucinator cost?
- 8:37Speaker 6: It was around four thousand dollars.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Okay, four thousand dollars, all right, I want to talk
- 8:41Speaker 1: to Nelson for a bit. Nelson is the one who
- 8:44Speaker 1: operates the Goosenator. Nelson, what's it like to drive that thing?
- 8:49Speaker 5: It's fatly easy.
- 8:50Speaker 8: I got the remote rate here. It's just like any
- 8:53Speaker 8: normal sugar operated remote control. It slides a lot better
- 8:58Speaker 8: on the ice in the water than it is on land.
- 9:01Speaker 8: It actually has some reals that you can attach to
- 9:03Speaker 8: it while you're using it on land, but primarily we've
- 9:06Speaker 8: been using it on the water in the ice okay.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And what's your strategy for scaring away the geese with
- 9:12Speaker 1: the Goosenator? Do you drive it like right into the flock?
- 9:16Speaker 2: No?
- 9:17Speaker 8: Actually, that's part of like learning how to use it,
- 9:20Speaker 8: and especially with a lot of communication from the manufacturer
- 9:23Speaker 8: and the designer about how to use it properly. It's
- 9:26Speaker 8: meant to look like a predator, so you're supposed to
- 9:29Speaker 8: operate it like stalking the geese really slow movements and
- 9:34Speaker 8: you're basically trying to herd them out. The more that
- 9:38Speaker 8: fly away at once, the better of them not coming back.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And how did the geese settive?
- 9:43Speaker 8: Repetitive usage of it is key to so using it
- 9:47Speaker 8: all the time to the point where they recognize the
- 9:50Speaker 8: truck and it coming out of the truck. They start
- 9:53Speaker 8: getting a little frantic when I show up.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Okay, So the reaction the geese have they just want
- 9:58Speaker 1: to leave when they see that.
- 9:59Speaker 8: Then, Yes, it's meant to look like a predator and
- 10:04Speaker 8: act as a predator.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It's meant to.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Make them feel like the area is unsafe.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And how do people react to seeing you use the goocinator?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Like have the cops been called on you yet?
- 10:15Speaker 7: No?
- 10:16Speaker 8: At first, like I think we did a good job
- 10:18Speaker 8: with preparing the public of its use, especially with like
- 10:21Speaker 8: Aaron said, communication with the federal government. It's in our
- 10:25Speaker 8: goose management program. Even before we had bought it, we
- 10:28Speaker 8: had started talking about using one and just being prepared
- 10:32Speaker 8: for the feedback that we're going to get on it
- 10:36Speaker 8: really helped out. And while I've been using it, there's
- 10:39Speaker 8: a lot of people that come here to look at
- 10:41Speaker 8: the birds and stuff like that, so they're quite knowledgeable
- 10:44Speaker 8: about why we're using it, and just being able to
- 10:46Speaker 8: talk to them about it has helped out immensely. And
- 10:50Speaker 8: for the most part, the feedback's been pretty good, like
- 10:53Speaker 8: very positive, a lot more than I anticipated, actually, But yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 8: we haven't really had any.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Complaints local coops.
- 11:01Speaker 8: The federal permitting officer did get some emails and calls,
- 11:06Speaker 8: but he already knew about us using it because we've
- 11:09Speaker 8: gone through the proper.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Okay, big question, then, can we see the gusinator in action?
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't.
- 11:19Speaker 8: I gotta rate behind me on the truck here. I'll
- 11:22Speaker 8: plug the battery in and obviously there's no lights here anymore,
- 11:26Speaker 8: but there is an island behind me that they tend
- 11:29Speaker 8: to nest at, so I'll just cruise by the island,
- 11:32Speaker 8: and that's what we'll be using it for in the
- 11:34Speaker 8: spring until they actually start uh nesting with eggs and
- 11:38Speaker 8: bolting and stuff like that.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Then we can't use it.
- 11:41Speaker 8: The usage of it, Okay, we'll be using it to
- 11:45Speaker 8: try and keep them from nesting on this island.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Perfect. Let's see that thing in action now. Nelson has
- 11:51Speaker 1: kept it hidden in the back of his truck because
- 11:53Speaker 1: he said usually like seeing his pickup is enough, but
- 11:58Speaker 1: seeing the gucinator especially, we'll get the geese to start
- 12:01Speaker 1: to lift off. He is grabbing the giant r sea boat.
- 12:05Speaker 1: That thing is is quite enormous, and he is now
- 12:09Speaker 1: taking it to the water. We could hear the geese
- 12:11Speaker 1: the entire interview, So I'm optimistic that Nelson's gonna put
- 12:15Speaker 1: on a show for us here. Yeah, look at that thing.
- 12:17Speaker 4: That's straight up nightmare fuel if you were a good.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's running it. It's got a prop on the front. Yeah, understandably.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Will oh Okay, here he goes and the geese are leaving.
- 12:29Speaker 2: The ones in the background.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so you can see this happening on our YouTube channel.
- 12:36Speaker 1: The geese have taken off at this point. Nelson's only
- 12:39Speaker 1: got the Goosinator about twenty yards from sure. Uh, smooth operator.
- 12:43Speaker 1: We've got here.
- 12:45Speaker 2: That's unbelievable.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Need some Jaws theme music going there?
- 12:48Speaker 2: They go there, got a couple from the island.
- 12:50Speaker 1: It's something off. The cool thing about the Goosenator is
- 12:52Speaker 1: it can drive on ice, land and water. This thing
- 12:56Speaker 1: is like even more amphibious than amphibian vehicles because it
- 13:01Speaker 1: can also go on the ice.
- 13:03Speaker 2: He's got a couple of stragglers there.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Uh huh oh, I love this couple stubborn geese. And
- 13:08Speaker 1: the person who makes the Goosinator that it looks like
- 13:11Speaker 1: a now a lot of cities and golf courses use uh.
- 13:14Speaker 1: They wanted this thing to look very offensive, so they
- 13:17Speaker 1: might have made it bright orange. Cameraman, can we punch
- 13:20Speaker 1: in on the Gousinator a little bit? Is that? Is
- 13:22Speaker 1: that an option for us? Would love to see these geese.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Jom's going to speak for him. I don't know if
- 13:28Speaker 3: you can pinch zoom on the stream yard app here.
- 13:31Speaker 2: It's not. That's okay, all right, It's still thrilling even
- 13:34Speaker 2: at this distance.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that you can see that Goucinator from a
- 13:38Speaker 1: long ways. Always picking up speed.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah, oh it's got some.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's great.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, here it comes. This is the Gooses perspective here
- 13:49Speaker 2: because it circles.
- 13:51Speaker 1: In Nelson, tell us a little more about what the
- 13:54Speaker 1: geese are doing right now. We can't quite see too
- 13:57Speaker 1: far off in the distance as to what's happening.
- 14:00Speaker 8: So basically everything on this side of it's all the
- 14:02Speaker 8: geese have left the islands. Like even the sound of
- 14:05Speaker 8: the gucinator, like we can't we hear a different pitch
- 14:08Speaker 8: than the geese actually do, and the sound of the
- 14:11Speaker 8: gucinator itself is actually very terrifying to them. Like different colors.
- 14:16Speaker 8: They actually see more colors than us too. And the
- 14:19Speaker 8: whole design of it is meant their characteristics as dislike
- 14:24Speaker 8: on the website that quotes Cornell University did this study
- 14:27Speaker 8: that characteristics and traits that like, and that's basically but
- 14:32Speaker 8: design off. The big the eyes, the slickers, the colored
- 14:38Speaker 8: orange and the reflective color itself, these are all things
- 14:42Speaker 8: that don't like to see.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that's uh, that's enough to scare me off to you.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Can we see that thing at top speed? Nelson? Can
- 14:48Speaker 1: you can you ramp it up for us?
- 14:49Speaker 5: Give her a rip, I'll go out and then I'll
- 14:53Speaker 5: bring it back.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Okay, we're not.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Tailing.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Very impressive. Oh yeah, wow, what a beast. You are
- 15:11Speaker 1: not welcome in the city of Lethbridge.
- 15:16Speaker 5: All right.
- 15:16Speaker 1: That was That was a real treat. Aaron and Nelson,
- 15:19Speaker 1: thanks for joining us, and good luck, good luck with
- 15:22Speaker 1: the goose hazing program. We're cheering for you, guys.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks for having us. You fun little fact
- 15:30Speaker 2: about Randall okay, which makes me a real advocate for
- 15:35Speaker 2: their cause. When I was too young to even remember
- 15:38Speaker 2: this incident, uh huh. I was at I believe, at
- 15:41Speaker 2: the National Zoo in Washington, d C. I've been told,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and a Canadian goose bit me on the foot and
- 15:49Speaker 2: broke my toe.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Broke your toe? You think the goose broke your toe?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Like did your two baby little baby toes, Spencer, Like
- 15:56Speaker 2: I said, they're tiny. That's what I'm told.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Okay, bye?
- 15:59Speaker 2: Who my parents?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It's a It maybe explain some of my idiosyncrasies around birds.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Uh huh, if I get into the dark recesses of
- 16:11Speaker 2: my mind.
- 16:11Speaker 1: They needed a goucinator.
- 16:12Speaker 9: I know.
- 16:13Speaker 2: So I appreciate that. Trying to avoid goose public conflict.
- 16:17Speaker 1: M all right, moving on. Our next segment is one
- 16:21Speaker 1: Minute Fishing. Do I feel lucky?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Will do you? Punk? Go ahead make my cast.
- 16:31Speaker 1: One Minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 16:34Speaker 1: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars
- 16:39Speaker 1: donation to a conservation group. This week, our angler is
- 16:43Speaker 1: American legend and one Minute Fishing Legend Pat Dirkin in
- 16:47Speaker 1: Wisconsin and he's fishing for a donation to the clear
- 16:50Speaker 1: Water Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Pat.
- 16:53Speaker 10: Welcome to the show, Hey Spencer, Thanks for having me on.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Pat was very motivated to make this work for us today.
- 17:01Speaker 1: He was scouting some fishing spots earlier this week and
- 17:04Speaker 1: if the weather had been a little colder, he'd be
- 17:06Speaker 1: standing on ice right now, but instead it's warmed up
- 17:10Speaker 1: and he's sitting in a boat. Yeah, Pat, tell us
- 17:15Speaker 1: about the boat that you're in.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Pat, this is my It's a fourteen foot three inch
- 17:22Speaker 11: cedar strip rowboat.
- 17:24Speaker 10: I built.
- 17:25Speaker 11: I lost it nineteen years ago in June. It took
- 17:28Speaker 11: me about two and a half years to built and
- 17:30Speaker 11: to spend my pride and joy ever since. And as
- 17:33Speaker 11: I've written about in my newspaper College Spencer.
- 17:37Speaker 10: I always advise young men we meet women, this is
- 17:40Speaker 10: what I need.
- 17:43Speaker 11: Is a boat, a rowboat, that cedar strip rowboat. Not
- 17:48Speaker 11: just any boat. You got to have a cedar stripper.
- 17:50Speaker 11: Because I pulled this boat into a gas station, into
- 17:54Speaker 11: a fast food restaurant, whatever it is, and women always
- 17:57Speaker 11: walk over and talk to me.
- 18:00Speaker 10: That's truly a chick magnet.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Okay, what about men? Do they show interest in the
- 18:04Speaker 1: boat as well? Say, say your your female seeking male companionship.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Would it do the same.
- 18:09Speaker 10: Thing' that's a great question.
- 18:12Speaker 11: Distinction I've noticed is that it's it primarily attracts old guys.
- 18:18Speaker 11: Yeah so, so my wife likes it because when I
- 18:21Speaker 11: leave here at the pier to hold on the boat
- 18:23Speaker 11: while go get the truck, all the old guys come
- 18:25Speaker 11: over and they it gives them the pretense of talk
- 18:28Speaker 11: never so.
- 18:31Speaker 10: But it's not. It's really uh.
- 18:34Speaker 11: I built it for musky roll trolling, and then I
- 18:37Speaker 11: found that I'm not really much much of a musky fishman,
- 18:40Speaker 11: because you know, it's the guilt trip you if you
- 18:42Speaker 11: eat one. So I pretty much turned into a pan
- 18:45Speaker 11: fishing machine.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Okay, cool. Now this is the maiden voyage of your
- 18:51Speaker 1: boat in twenty twenty five.
- 18:53Speaker 10: Correct, correct, correct, Yeah, it's first time on the water
- 18:56Speaker 10: this year.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Okay, And how's the fishing band today? So far?
- 19:00Speaker 10: Been pretty lowsy?
- 19:01Speaker 11: I you know, I'm blaming mother nature because, like you
- 19:05Speaker 11: said in the intro, I wanted to be up on
- 19:09Speaker 11: on Lake Altuna, which is north of me a little
- 19:11Speaker 11: ways where the perch are biting, just on Sunday for me.
- 19:15Speaker 11: And I was all gassed up about, you know, keeping
- 19:17Speaker 11: my string intact for two straight appearances, you know, on
- 19:21Speaker 11: on women at fishing and catching a fish. And then
- 19:24Speaker 11: it's gotten so warm since and I didn't want a hazard,
- 19:27Speaker 11: take the risk of going out there and punching through
- 19:29Speaker 11: and dying prematurely, you.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Know, So, Pat, this is like Major League Baseball. If
- 19:36Speaker 2: you're batting five hundred, you're ahead of the game, So
- 19:38Speaker 2: don't worry about that, yes sir, All right, Pat?
- 19:43Speaker 1: So what are we What are we fishing for today?
- 19:45Speaker 10: Okay? Well, the goal was to come out here.
- 19:48Speaker 11: I'm a little bit early for the river, but usually
- 19:51Speaker 11: this is a good section of river I'm on for
- 19:54Speaker 11: for perch when they start spawning and use a mid
- 19:56Speaker 11: to late march. They will pretty be pretty thick in
- 20:00Speaker 11: this river, the Chippleware River that I'm on. And also
- 20:03Speaker 11: you'll catch walleyes in here, and some guys. It's really
- 20:06Speaker 11: a good fishery for a small wolf pass, but I
- 20:09Speaker 11: primarily come here for.
- 20:11Speaker 10: For perch and walleye.
- 20:12Speaker 11: So okay, I'm trying it, and I have some guys
- 20:16Speaker 11: downing down the river for me a lot ways. They
- 20:17Speaker 11: pulled a couple of fish in, but I can't quite
- 20:20Speaker 11: figure out what they're fishing for.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And it looks like you're jigging this afternoon.
- 20:24Speaker 10: Correct, I've got I got one line.
- 20:27Speaker 11: This is Wisconsin, So everyone who's going to play the
- 20:30Speaker 11: game warden on me. You can you can use three
- 20:33Speaker 11: lines in Wisconsin. So I got one out with a
- 20:36Speaker 11: crappie minow birch minow on. I got one with a
- 20:39Speaker 11: bigger walleye shine around, and I'm casting a little little
- 20:44Speaker 11: crank bait, a little rapala. So I figured i'd use
- 20:48Speaker 11: for for my one minute attempt here.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Okay, everything but the kitchen sink pad is using today.
- 20:54Speaker 1: All right, pat, You're one minute of fishing starts as
- 20:57Speaker 1: soon as you make that first cast.
- 20:59Speaker 10: All right, here we go.
- 21:02Speaker 11: Get them past casting out into casting out into the
- 21:05Speaker 11: stronger current and bringing him back along the little a
- 21:09Speaker 11: little more unprotected water. Okay, and this particular ex rap I.
- 21:16Speaker 10: Think it is. I'll give you a little twitter right
- 21:18Speaker 10: now and then. And I've taught everything.
- 21:20Speaker 11: From big crappies, the big perch on, but mainly walleyes.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Well, you are twenty five seconds into your one minute,
- 21:29Speaker 1: right is Is this the same rod that you used
- 21:31Speaker 1: in Idaho to be the first successful angler of one
- 21:33Speaker 1: minute fishing?
- 21:34Speaker 10: Right? It is?
- 21:35Speaker 7: It is?
- 21:35Speaker 10: That's why, that's why it's in my in my hand
- 21:38Speaker 10: right now.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Okay, you got twenty seconds to go. Pat got some
- 21:42Speaker 1: good mojo with that rod.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Well, this suspense is killing me.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I know we had we had a great video with
- 21:49Speaker 3: Pat right before he started he cast, and now it's
- 21:51Speaker 3: a little little spotty.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It's gott gotten bad five seconds, Pat, Okay, crank it. Well,
- 21:59Speaker 1: it did not happened today for Pat. But you know
- 22:04Speaker 1: what they say, Pat, A bad day of fishing is
- 22:06Speaker 1: better than a good day of being a freelance writer
- 22:08Speaker 1: in Wisconsin, Isn't that right?
- 22:13Speaker 10: But that's my purpose?
- 22:14Speaker 11: Though, you know I heard this morning specer that you
- 22:18Speaker 11: know I'm almost I'll be seventy years old in January,
- 22:21Speaker 11: and I heard this morning that Andy Rooney in the
- 22:25Speaker 11: Great sixty Minutes commentator and journalist, he lived into his
- 22:30Speaker 11: late eighties early nineties, and he lost his job, and
- 22:36Speaker 11: a week later he died, lost his basically lost his
- 22:39Speaker 11: purpose and he was gone.
- 22:40Speaker 10: So I figured I keep working a while.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Yeah, don't quite right.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Keep those fingers spry. Pat.
- 22:46Speaker 1: A beautiful boat though, that he's sitting in. I think
- 22:49Speaker 1: we'll see that boat again on one minute fishing. Thanks
- 22:51Speaker 1: for joining us, Pat, happy to.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Say, Pat, thank you. Take care of Pat.
- 22:54Speaker 4: You guys, sounded like he needed that goucinator back there.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You know, it's still like waterfowl over the top of them.
- 23:00Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Today, boys, we have our third guest coming up later.
- 23:04Speaker 1: He's gonna talk to us about some rare guns from
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Rock Island auction. If we hear geese in his background,
- 23:09Speaker 1: we really got problems at that point. Yeah, that'd be weird.
- 23:14Speaker 1: All right, Phil, Let's take a break for some listener feedback.
- 23:16Speaker 1: What's the chat have to say?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Yeah, just a reminder. If you guys have questions for
- 23:20Speaker 3: the crew, go ahead and submit him now. We'll hit
- 23:22Speaker 3: him in the next few minutes and at the very
- 23:24Speaker 3: end of the show. So anything for Corey Randall or Spencer.
- 23:27Speaker 3: But first off, some behind the scenes questions from Brady.
- 23:31Speaker 3: He asks was trivia Was the Trivia Tournament actually filmed
- 23:34Speaker 3: in multiple segments or in one sitting?
- 23:36Speaker 1: So the Trivia Tournament it was three episodes. We filmed
- 23:40Speaker 1: two of those episodes in one day, back to back,
- 23:43Speaker 1: so we knocked those episodes out in about a two
- 23:45Speaker 1: hour window, and then one week later we filmed episode three.
- 23:50Speaker 1: So there you go, Brady, that's your behind the scenes look.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We tried to record it in twenty twenty four because
- 23:56Speaker 1: it's the twenty twenty four championship, but Steve skied schedule
- 24:00Speaker 1: with filming his History Channel show just didn't really allow that,
- 24:03Speaker 1: so we had to wait until now and then I
- 24:05Speaker 1: think this summer we're gonna have a Jabroni tournament coming
- 24:08Speaker 1: for all those folks who didn't qualify for the big leagues.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And I would like to apologize. I saw someone in
- 24:13Speaker 2: the chat hadn't listened to the final episode yet, so
- 24:18Speaker 2: we should have maybe added a spoiler alert. Although if
- 24:21Speaker 2: you were paying attention to scoreboard at the end of
- 24:23Speaker 2: episode two, yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah, let's say this. There's there is something fun that
- 24:29Speaker 1: happens in that episode anyway, so you should go listen
- 24:32Speaker 1: to Yes, Yes, we have some very competitive scores that happened.
- 24:37Speaker 1: What else you got, Phil?
- 24:38Speaker 3: Well, on that note, we're getting a lot of requests
- 24:40Speaker 3: for a honkin for a Bonkan X Randomle t shirt
- 24:44Speaker 3: our two most requested t shirts recently.
- 24:47Speaker 2: So I don't have my face on the goose though your.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Face on a goose maybe maybe being chased by a
- 24:52Speaker 3: goosenador as well. Oh broke in to throw it all
- 24:55Speaker 3: in and.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Explain, and my origin story will be captured in the art.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that reminds me lay And we had somebody write
- 25:02Speaker 1: into Mediater Trivia saying that they and their buddy have
- 25:04Speaker 1: a competition and the loser of their year long tournament
- 25:08Speaker 1: a Mediatter Trivia has to get a tattoo of our choosing.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I think we offered a few suggestions, and then a
- 25:14Speaker 1: lot of people wrote in afterwards saying we missed the
- 25:16Speaker 1: obvious one of getting the tattoo of honking for a
- 25:20Speaker 1: bonkin that appeared on a previous episode of Media to
- 25:24Speaker 1: Radio for a tattoo that someone ended up regretting but
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think they gave that person words of encouragement.
- 25:30Speaker 2: They should. I hope they no longer regret that tattoo.
- 25:33Speaker 1: It's a good tattoo. So if that person is listening
- 25:35Speaker 1: right now who lost their trivia championship with their buddy,
- 25:39Speaker 1: they ought to get the honkin for a bon goose tattoo.
- 25:45Speaker 3: To piggyback on some more trivia stuff, John has a comment.
- 25:47Speaker 3: He says, in regards to the Dermefted incident, I think
- 25:50Speaker 3: incorrectly spelled answers in trivia should only be counted as
- 25:53Speaker 3: correct if they can be reasonably pronounced correctly. And I
- 25:56Speaker 3: agree with John, which is why I was against Steve
- 25:59Speaker 3: getting that's the part point.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, here's John articulated it rather clearly. Here in the
- 26:04Speaker 2: back of my mind, I had some sort of animal
- 26:06Speaker 2: instinct to reject Steve's answer, but John really hit the
- 26:09Speaker 2: nail on the head.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yeah, here's the deal, John, It's it's very hard for
- 26:13Speaker 1: seven people to argue with their boss who's right and
- 26:17Speaker 1: who's wrong. So sometimes we just lose that argument in
- 26:20Speaker 1: that case, and that that means that in other cases,
- 26:23Speaker 1: Randall doesn't get credit for putting crystalis instead of chrysalis,
- 26:27Speaker 1: even though you know the logic should have been applied
- 26:30Speaker 1: there as well. So sorry, apologized to you Randall for
- 26:32Speaker 1: months ago when you gave that answer.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and did you go back and look at whether
- 26:36Speaker 2: that would have affected the outcome of the game. I
- 26:38Speaker 2: believe I would have tied it.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I don't think I'm going to anything else, Phil.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Aaron got turkey season coming up, Aaron says. He says,
- 26:46Speaker 3: I turkey hunt solo a lot. How do y'all usually
- 26:48Speaker 3: spend the back half of your day in a hunt
- 26:50Speaker 3: till noon state?
- 26:52Speaker 1: Well, Aarin, my great flaw with turkey hunting and with
- 26:57Speaker 1: shed hunting is that it always devolves into two other things,
- 27:01Speaker 1: and that is mushroom hunting or rock hunting. So Aaron,
- 27:04Speaker 1: keep your eyes on the ground, look for cool rocks,
- 27:08Speaker 1: look for mushrooms that are if you hunt in a
- 27:10Speaker 1: if you're in a hunt till noonstate, and I feel
- 27:12Speaker 1: like those are mostly in the South, is like Kentucky
- 27:14Speaker 1: or Tennessee. Someone to write in. I'm sure you've probably
- 27:17Speaker 1: got mushrooms popping up here very soon, So get yourself
- 27:19Speaker 1: educated on what edible mushrooms you can eat, and then
- 27:23Speaker 1: go look for those things. How about you boys, any
- 27:25Speaker 1: any suggestions for what Aaron should do after the turkey
- 27:28Speaker 1: hunting season ends for him at noon o'clock each day.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Man, around here, we're hunting turkeys from sun up till sundown,
- 27:34Speaker 4: so I'm trying to think.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Put myself in your shoes. I'd probably go fishing.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Or if you're in a state that has an open
- 27:41Speaker 2: black bear season, you can cruise the roads, do a
- 27:44Speaker 2: little glassing up high look for bruin.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Or take a nap, or take a nice afternoon nap.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yep aps are good.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Lance suggested putting a GoPro on the goosinator. That's a
- 27:55Speaker 3: great idea. And also our guy Mogor, apparently Daylight Savings
- 27:59Speaker 3: works differently and Hungry he missed the beginning of the show,
- 28:02Speaker 3: but we're glad to hear both, honestly. Yeah, when the
- 28:06Speaker 3: timer was happening, I was looking in the chat as
- 28:08Speaker 3: usually our guys in there saying hi, and he wasn't
- 28:11Speaker 3: in there, And I'm glad to see that he didn't
- 28:13Speaker 3: miss that.
- 28:13Speaker 2: I hope I didn't screw up my Hungry time last
- 28:16Speaker 2: week when I announced it. That would be embarrassing.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Mogor, you're gonna have to go back and listen because
- 28:21Speaker 1: we talked about you again this week and how Randall's
- 28:24Speaker 1: shot out to your time zone. He's going to inspire
- 28:27Speaker 1: a new little bit immediate least. I don't know about
- 28:29Speaker 1: the other hosts.
- 28:30Speaker 3: I'll do one one more fluffy one, but we'll hit
- 28:32Speaker 3: more of these at the end of the show, so
- 28:33Speaker 3: keep the questions coming in question for Phil, what are
- 28:35Speaker 3: the odds you implement your harmonica into one of the jingles?
- 28:38Speaker 3: Pretty low because the jingles are usually just, you know,
- 28:42Speaker 3: rip off parodies of pop songs and stuff. But I
- 28:45Speaker 3: did play harmonica for the theme song I wrote for
- 28:48Speaker 3: the Meat Eater Kids podcast. So if he wants some
- 28:50Speaker 3: more harmonica action, you need.
- 28:52Speaker 1: To just do like some piano man that has a
- 28:56Speaker 1: strong harmonica in it. Anything with Blues Travelers has a
- 29:00Speaker 1: lot of harmonica.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Oh, I'm just as good as that guy, John Popper.
- 29:04Speaker 3: He's got his bandoliers of harmonica.
- 29:06Speaker 2: The hook always brings me back.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I'm with you. I think gen Z just discovered the
- 29:11Speaker 1: Blues Traveler.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Is that a thing?
- 29:12Speaker 2: Like?
- 29:13Speaker 3: Is he big on TikTok now?
- 29:14Speaker 2: Or I say it's just blues Traveler.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Yeah, Blues Traveler more than one of them. So anyway,
- 29:22Speaker 1: gen Z has just discovered them. The specific clip of
- 29:26Speaker 1: him doing the is it the the harmonica solo in
- 29:29Speaker 1: hook that is quite popular? Right now? Wow, people are thrilled.
- 29:32Speaker 1: That's it exists? All right? Moving on, our next segment
- 29:37Speaker 1: is the price is right?
- 29:41Speaker 3: Let's move over to my thing here, sorry, Spencer. Here
- 29:44Speaker 3: it comes from Bozeman, Montana Media Radio's most exciting ten minutes.
- 29:49Speaker 3: It's the prices right, yes, Cory Culkins come on now,
- 29:56Speaker 3: Randall Williams.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Come on the.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Next what's your contestants on meeting to radios? The price
- 30:02Speaker 3: is right? Now here's your host, Spencer new huh, thank you.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Phil, thank you, Cory's third appearance all your price is right,
- 30:12Speaker 1: and Randall's first appearance here. All right, this game is
- 30:16Speaker 1: really simple. Phil is going to tell you about a
- 30:18Speaker 1: product from the meat Eater universe, and you need to
- 30:21Speaker 1: guess its price. The player with the closest answer without
- 30:24Speaker 1: going over will be declared the winner. If both players
- 30:27Speaker 1: go over, then you'll both be told to try again,
- 30:29Speaker 1: and the chat should play along as well, because whoever
- 30:32Speaker 1: has the closest answer we'll get a shout out from Phil.
- 30:35Speaker 1: All right, there are three products for today's show. Phil
- 30:39Speaker 1: tell us about the first item up forbid.
- 30:45Speaker 3: How about we start today's show by giving you your
- 30:47Speaker 3: very own Big Buck Hunter reloaded arcade game. Do you
- 30:51Speaker 3: want to live like a bachelor? Do you love slugging
- 30:53Speaker 3: beers and shooting deers? Here's your name, Randall Williams. Well,
- 30:56Speaker 3: we've got just the thing for you. The Big Buck
- 30:58Speaker 3: Hunter Reloaded arcade game comes with forty two inch monitor
- 31:01Speaker 3: in two toy rifles, and if you get tired of
- 31:04Speaker 3: gunning down booner white tails, just turn on one of
- 31:06Speaker 3: the other seven thrilling games, such as The Walking Dead,
- 31:09Speaker 3: Duck Dynasty, or Terminator Salvation.
- 31:11Speaker 1: There's also thirty three mini games and eleven huntable animals,
- 31:16Speaker 1: including a zombie deer mission called Dough of the Dead.
- 31:19Speaker 1: All right, Randall and Corey, what does that bar worthy
- 31:23Speaker 1: arcade game cost?
- 31:24Speaker 7: And?
- 31:25Speaker 1: Sorry, is this used or is this new? This is
- 31:27Speaker 1: brand new. I'm not going to tell you the website,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but this is a brand new Big Buck Hunter reloaded
- 31:35Speaker 1: arcade game. Phil is showing us a few screenshots from
- 31:38Speaker 1: the game, as well as that arcade game itself.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Without going over Randall.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Phil describe the graphics you're looking at here?
- 31:47Speaker 3: Oh sure, yeah, for the audio listeners. We've got some
- 31:50Speaker 3: deer with some real thick antlers frolicking around a farmhouse here,
- 31:54Speaker 3: but they are completely eaten up by some sort of
- 31:57Speaker 3: zombie parasite. They've got some green slim all over their ribcage,
- 32:02Speaker 3: you know, their their jaws are torn apart, you know.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Picture of zombie deer. That's what we're looking at here.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So that's one to be Why are arcade game graphics
- 32:09Speaker 1: always like fifteen years behind the rest of video game graphics?
- 32:14Speaker 1: And if you showed me this screenshot, which you can
- 32:17Speaker 1: see on our YouTube channel, I'd be like, yeah, that's
- 32:19Speaker 1: from two thousand and four.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Well, arcade games need to they're in a cabinet that
- 32:23Speaker 3: needs it's hot, it needs to be running, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 3: not twenty four to seven, but in some cases, yeah,
- 32:28Speaker 3: twenty four seven. So they can't use two intensive CPUs
- 32:32Speaker 3: or graphics cards that would so they they're a little
- 32:35Speaker 3: bit behind the times, but that keeps them running for longer.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Sure, So a forty two inch monitor, it has two rifles,
- 32:43Speaker 1: seven thrilling games, thirty three mini games, eleven huntable animals.
- 32:48Speaker 1: This isn't your Dad's Big buck Hunter arcade game.
- 32:51Speaker 2: God, I want one so bad in my house. Yeah.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Well they make a mini one now, which is what
- 32:56Speaker 2: I do. Yeah, so you can.
- 32:58Speaker 1: This isn't that.
- 32:58Speaker 2: My buddy's got one in his basement. That one is
- 33:00Speaker 2: actually quite affordable. Okay, this one though, it doesn't shoot
- 33:05Speaker 2: like the real thing. Yeah, this is one you'd see
- 33:07Speaker 2: in your favorite bar. Sydney and I used to go
- 33:09Speaker 2: play buck Hunter on our anniversary every year.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Wow, and you quit doing that?
- 33:13Speaker 2: They sold that buck Hunter machine?
- 33:15Speaker 1: Okay, I bet we could find another one.
- 33:16Speaker 2: We used to go to the bar where we met
- 33:17Speaker 2: in Missoula and play it.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Wow.
- 33:19Speaker 2: There's also a great buck Hunter machine there used to
- 33:21Speaker 2: be one of the cannery. There's a great one at
- 33:25Speaker 2: a laundromat in Whitefish.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I used to play that when we were up
- 33:30Speaker 2: in Whitefish. It's it's really part of our journey, my
- 33:34Speaker 2: wife and I. It's part of our story.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Do both of you have an answer price of the
- 33:40Speaker 1: Big buck Hunter reloaded arcade game? Go ahead and reveal
- 33:44Speaker 1: your answers. You have Randalls saying coward five thousand, six
- 33:49Speaker 1: hundred and ninety nine dollars and ninety nine cents, and
- 33:53Speaker 1: we have Corey going low. He says six hundred and
- 33:55Speaker 1: one dollars.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Hate the player, not the game, coward.
- 33:58Speaker 1: The correct answer is six thousand, four hundred ninety five dollars,
- 34:03Speaker 1: giving Randal the first point. He was only nine hundred
- 34:07Speaker 1: dollars off the correct answer.
- 34:08Speaker 3: If we had Big Dough in the chat, who gets
- 34:11Speaker 3: sixty four hundred very close?
- 34:13Speaker 1: Tell yeah, Big Dough.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Golly.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Now the mini one that Randal is saying his buddy
- 34:19Speaker 1: has that one's like six hundred dollars, maybe you were
- 34:21Speaker 1: right on thought, and they sell that one at like
- 34:24Speaker 1: best Buy, Yeah, Walmart and fun. Yeah, this this was
- 34:29Speaker 1: the real deal, way off, all right, Phil tell us
- 34:32Speaker 1: about the second item up.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Forbid, Well, if you like shooting thousands of virtual deer,
- 34:38Speaker 3: then you'd probably love an autographed copy of Ted Nugen's
- 34:41Speaker 3: book God, Guns and Rock and Roll. The whack Master
- 34:44Speaker 3: himself signed hundreds of items that he's selling on his website.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Besides his memoir, there's also autographed cookbooks, posters, and hats,
- 34:51Speaker 3: including a chic Camo cap that says elect that mother
- 34:53Speaker 3: effor again. Ted calls it the super Gonzo Sorry hold on,
- 34:57Speaker 3: Ted calls it quote because that's important. The super Gonzo
- 35:01Speaker 3: Mojo Voodoo America Freedom battlecry hat of all time. But hey,
- 35:05Speaker 3: feel free to choose your own nonsensical string of nouns, verbs,
- 35:08Speaker 3: and adjectives.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Well, I know what I'm getting filled for Christmas?
- 35:11Speaker 7: This?
- 35:11Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Randal and Corey. What does that autographed
- 35:15Speaker 1: book from Terrible Ted cost? This is straight from his website.
- 35:20Speaker 1: He has I think four books for sale that have
- 35:23Speaker 1: his name on him.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the only one I've read this. You know,
- 35:26Speaker 2: your kid, I read that. Yeah, I read that in
- 35:28Speaker 2: high school.
- 35:29Speaker 1: You did. Yeah, you made it one of the New
- 35:30Speaker 1: York Times bestsellers, which it has that stampo Oh.
- 35:33Speaker 2: I think it was long out by the time I
- 35:36Speaker 2: read it.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Give us a review of God, Guns and Rock and Roll.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I don't remember much about it, I'll be honest with you,
- 35:43Speaker 2: but I did own that. I remember sitting there on
- 35:45Speaker 2: the that's sitting on my bookshelf.
- 35:48Speaker 1: It's a pretty book, pretty looking book. And he sells
- 35:51Speaker 1: hundreds of things on his website that are autographed by him.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I mean, my gut tells me that
- 35:59Speaker 2: he val use his own signature rather highly. I know
- 36:02Speaker 2: that's what I'm worried about too, but it's also a book.
- 36:06Speaker 1: It is a book, but it's signed by the whack
- 36:09Speaker 1: Master himself.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Can we get a pub date on that film?
- 36:13Speaker 3: Unfortunately I don't have that in my script, but maybe
- 36:16Speaker 3: Spencer could We could look that up.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Yeah, now, sorry, you're juggling too many things.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Back to item one though, the six four hundred and
- 36:22Speaker 1: ninety five dollars that was from hangout haven dot com.
- 36:26Speaker 1: If you want to make it online qubat compatible, you'll
- 36:29Speaker 1: need to fork over another forty dollars per month.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Figure, there's like people across the globe in big buck Hunter. Wow,
- 36:36Speaker 1: we're on.
- 36:36Speaker 3: It looks like it got August fourteenth, two thousand and
- 36:39Speaker 3: one for that publication.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker 2: I could read that in high school. Maybe I was
- 36:42Speaker 2: one of the ones that one of the individuals.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Put it in the best. I'm surprised to hear that
- 36:46Speaker 1: that book looks like a post nine to eleven book,
- 36:49Speaker 1: not a pre I know he was time, he was
- 36:52Speaker 1: three weeks.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I don't think Ted's changed his tune much. Well, I
- 36:55Speaker 2: guess like since he you know, dodged the draft by
- 36:57Speaker 2: shooting his pants.
- 36:58Speaker 1: But you boys got an answer for the costs of
- 37:04Speaker 1: that autographic. Remember I think he said that in an
- 37:07Speaker 1: interview and then later denied it. Who knows? You boys? Ready, yep,
- 37:11Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall saying
- 37:16Speaker 1: seventy nine ninety nine, big, we have Corey saying forty
- 37:20Speaker 1: nine ninety nine. The correct answer is lower than both
- 37:25Speaker 1: of them, So you will try again write down a
- 37:29Speaker 1: new answer. What was yours, Corey, forty nine ninety nine.
- 37:32Speaker 1: You'd know that it's lower than fifty bucks. How's the
- 37:36Speaker 1: chat doing, Phil as anybody else?
- 37:38Speaker 3: Well, I don't want to give too much away that
- 37:39Speaker 3: we have. We've had a lot of people get it
- 37:41Speaker 3: right on the money, so I'm sure there are some
- 37:43Speaker 3: good guesses and saying some cheaters in there.
- 37:45Speaker 1: But all right, man, Randall and Corey, it's lower people
- 37:48Speaker 1: are cheating than I have no problem accusing them. Be
- 37:51Speaker 1: careful here, and both of you have an answer. Go
- 37:54Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Corey saying thirty
- 37:59Speaker 1: four ninety nine, Oh boy, Randall saying twenty seven ninety nine.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Come on, uncle Ted.
- 38:04Speaker 1: The correct answer is twenty nine ninety nine, giving Randall
- 38:09Speaker 1: the victory and the second point of the game. And
- 38:13Speaker 1: that is twenty dollars cheaper than his autographed hat that
- 38:16Speaker 1: says American shit kicker on it. So if if you're
- 38:20Speaker 1: looking to get Pat Dirkin his seventy seventieth birthday present
- 38:26Speaker 1: for about fifty bucks, two autograph pieces of ted nugient merch.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Phil tell us about the folks who got it right
- 38:33Speaker 1: on the nose.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I'm putting them up all on the screen here because
- 38:36Speaker 3: I don't there's a lot.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Of Mark Hodges.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Hello, get them all there we have, we have five
- 38:41Speaker 3: or six people, get it, get it right on the money.
- 38:42Speaker 1: There on you guys?
- 38:44Speaker 5: All right?
- 38:44Speaker 1: Phil tell us about the third item up forbid today.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Oh, surely just bring it up here and do that.
- 38:51Speaker 10: Do that?
- 38:52Speaker 3: And then I got you heck over here? Do you
- 38:54Speaker 3: do you like it when I narrate all the things
- 38:56Speaker 3: I'm doing. That's trying to yes, silent.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Let me guess what we're talking about here.
- 38:59Speaker 3: It's a yeah, actually rand, how about you guess? And
- 39:02Speaker 3: then I'll read the description.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It's a four x six harbor freight tarp.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Our final light.
- 39:06Speaker 3: I'm up for bid today. Is a taxidermied whitetail doe
- 39:09Speaker 3: from Craigslist. Oh really, this full body mount portrays a
- 39:15Speaker 3: dead deer lying on its side. It doesn't sound too interesting. Well,
- 39:17Speaker 3: you'd be wrong. The New York City seller said the
- 39:19Speaker 3: white tail was used as a movie prop. When Spencer
- 39:22Speaker 3: reached out to ask what movie, the Craigslister wouldn't say,
- 39:24Speaker 3: but did reveal that the film will come out later
- 39:27Speaker 3: this year and stars an Oscar winning actress. Could it
- 39:30Speaker 3: be Jurassic Park, maybe Avatar or The Conjuring, or it
- 39:33Speaker 3: might be the seventh film and the Predator franchise. I
- 39:36Speaker 3: guess we'll never know.
- 39:36Speaker 1: That's right, Phil. Even when I begged the seller to
- 39:39Speaker 1: tell me and added pretty pretty pleased to my email,
- 39:42Speaker 1: they held firm and said legally they couldn't leak the
- 39:45Speaker 1: title of the film. All right, Mandolin Corey, what does
- 39:48Speaker 1: that full body white tailed dough mount cost? Beautifully done,
- 39:53Speaker 1: piece of tax, very real. It's a white tailed doe
- 39:56Speaker 1: who looks like she's in her early summer coat. And
- 40:00Speaker 1: then it so, I think the bloat that you're seeing
- 40:03Speaker 1: there are her utters. This would be a deer that
- 40:06Speaker 1: died like right in the middle of May while she
- 40:09Speaker 1: had a little fawn under her belly.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Or it's been sitting on the side of the road
- 40:13Speaker 4: for twenty four hours.
- 40:14Speaker 1: That's right, So what does that piece could be at
- 40:17Speaker 1: any cost?
- 40:18Speaker 2: Interesting?
- 40:19Speaker 4: Golly, I can't go out zero to three here.
- 40:23Speaker 2: It looks so good on the tarp.
- 40:25Speaker 4: I know, I know how much the tarp cast.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I need our listeners to watch every film that comes
- 40:30Speaker 1: out this year that is starring an Oscar winning actress,
- 40:33Speaker 1: so we can figure out where this taxidermy dough is from.
- 40:37Speaker 2: If it's in the new Jurassic Park film, so I watch,
- 40:41Speaker 2: it'll be co starring with some FHF gear.
- 40:44Speaker 1: That's right, Scarjoe. She has an oscar, so I thought
- 40:47Speaker 1: it could be that. But when I watched the trailer,
- 40:50Speaker 1: it looks like it's taking place on a tropical island.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Carl Jansen has an oscar. She's been nominated multiple times.
- 40:56Speaker 1: She's never Okay, now we got it. Well, if that's
- 40:58Speaker 1: not the case, then we can eliminate Jurassic.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Part hershlaw Ali, I think is in that movie. He
- 41:03Speaker 3: does have an Oscar, but he is a man actress. Yes,
- 41:06Speaker 3: oscar and actress. Do both of you have an answer
- 41:10Speaker 3: for what that taxidermied dead deer costs? I do go
- 41:15Speaker 3: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cory saying carry
- 41:18Speaker 3: one hundred one dollars, Randall saying two thousand, four hundred
- 41:23Speaker 3: ninety nine dollars in ninety nine.
- 41:26Speaker 4: He's a Hollywood history to be Yeah, but they're just
- 41:28Speaker 4: trying to get rid of that thing.
- 41:30Speaker 1: The correct answer is four thousand, five hundred dollars, and
- 41:35Speaker 1: they said, if I pick it up by Sunday, they'll
- 41:37Speaker 1: give me a discount. Wow, maybe maybe you could make
- 41:41Speaker 1: twenty five hundred dollars. I'm going to be in New
- 41:42Speaker 1: York City next week. I could. I could genuinely bring
- 41:45Speaker 1: this thing home if we can solve where this movie
- 41:47Speaker 1: comes from.
- 41:48Speaker 4: You got four grand burning a hole in your pocket?
- 41:50Speaker 1: I do not, But maybe this company whose airwaves ron
- 41:53Speaker 1: does offer him three hundred and one dollars Randall a
- 41:57Speaker 1: dominant victory coming off being the twenty twenty four Media
- 42:00Speaker 1: to Trivia champion, So we do now defending his title
- 42:03Speaker 1: is that that.
- 42:04Speaker 3: One goes out to all the randoms in the chat
- 42:06Speaker 3: we had Kevin Guess ninety nine. But also, you know,
- 42:09Speaker 3: I don't know what it says about me that I
- 42:10Speaker 3: don't trust anyone who gets it right on the money,
- 42:12Speaker 3: but especially with something like this. But Lance, guess nine
- 42:15Speaker 3: point fifty Lance, if you are a true to your word,
- 42:18Speaker 3: then I apologize.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Four thousand, five hundred dollars, though those are the closest
- 42:21Speaker 1: we had.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Oh sorry, I'm looking.
- 42:26Speaker 1: We're life. That's okay, I'm looking at.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Last episode's price of a taxidermy or you know the camouflage.
- 42:34Speaker 3: I'm looking at the wrong price.
- 42:35Speaker 1: That's okay. Five hundred dollars, five hundred dollars. You were
- 42:39Speaker 1: close in the chat on.
- 42:41Speaker 3: You Big Dough put a winkie face. We know what
- 42:43Speaker 3: he's about. He got it right off the Big Dough
- 42:47Speaker 3: the dirty dog.
- 42:48Speaker 1: So if you live in New York City, that taxidermy
- 42:51Speaker 1: doe could be yours. And uh, like Randalls said, it's
- 42:54Speaker 1: a piece of Hollywood history.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Maybe it's Big Dough pushing his own product.
- 43:00Speaker 3: The chat you just flat outset see this, this is
- 43:04Speaker 3: what I'm talking about.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Well know who to watch next time when we're playing Randall?
- 43:09Speaker 1: Now the championship price is right and me Dieter trivia.
- 43:15Speaker 1: All right, let's move on to our last interview for
- 43:18Speaker 1: the day. Joining us on the line next is Joel
- 43:21Speaker 1: Colander from Rock Island, auction and he's here to show
- 43:25Speaker 1: us some legendary guns that are coming up for sale. Joel,
- 43:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the show.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Gentlemen, afternoon. Always a pleasure going to be back.
- 43:32Speaker 1: All right, Joel h he's a recurring guest. But real
- 43:35Speaker 1: quick remind folks of what Rock Island Auction is.
- 43:39Speaker 9: Sure, we're the number one auction house in the world
- 43:42Speaker 9: for fine and historic collector firearms. Of course we're known
- 43:46Speaker 9: for six and seven figure of firearms. Those are the
- 43:49Speaker 9: ones that catch the headlines, but absolutely catering to collectors,
- 43:52Speaker 9: users of all budgets, all levels of expertise, everything. If
- 43:57Speaker 9: there's something you're looking for, it's not a question of
- 44:00Speaker 9: of if we'll get it, it's usually just when.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Now, before we get to today's guns, I want to
- 44:04Speaker 1: ask you some questions about Rock Island. What's the oldest
- 44:07Speaker 1: gun you've ever sold?
- 44:10Speaker 9: The oldest that I've seen since I've been here, and
- 44:12Speaker 9: that's just about twelve years are actual hand cannons, So
- 44:17Speaker 9: before there's you know, triggers and firing mechanisms, you literally
- 44:20Speaker 9: have a cannon you hold in your hand with a
- 44:21Speaker 9: touch hole and you're and you're firing it off.
- 44:25Speaker 1: So how old are we.
- 44:26Speaker 9: Talking, oh, fourteen hundreds in earlier? Wow, gun powder dating
- 44:33Speaker 9: back to you know what, some people's in the earliest
- 44:36Speaker 9: between like eleventh century at the earliest. So in between
- 44:39Speaker 9: that area and there's a lot of you know, of
- 44:41Speaker 9: course development in that time.
- 44:43Speaker 1: And what part of the world would that gun come.
- 44:44Speaker 9: From, Asia, Japan, China of course gunpowder you know developing
- 44:52Speaker 9: in China, so whole lot of that section of the
- 44:54Speaker 9: world will have that. The earliest gun that we've sold
- 44:57Speaker 9: of significance comes from about sixteen ten sixteen twenty, so
- 45:01Speaker 9: you're looking right around the time the King James Bible
- 45:04Speaker 9: is introduced, and that was a wheel lock that belong
- 45:07Speaker 9: to Louis the thirteenth.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Now, what's the most famous gun that you've ever sold?
- 45:14Speaker 5: Oh, well, we brought it up in the last interview.
- 45:16Speaker 9: I'd have to say it's that Blastech Deal forty four blaster.
- 45:21Speaker 9: It was a Han Solo's blaster from Star Wars episode four.
- 45:25Speaker 9: It was one of three ever made, and it came
- 45:27Speaker 9: to us, you know, from the owner of a batting
- 45:30Speaker 9: company from the actual prop house, had documentation from the
- 45:33Speaker 9: armor of the film.
- 45:34Speaker 5: So that one got some international press.
- 45:37Speaker 9: Also went for over a million dollars set a Guinness
- 45:39Speaker 9: World record actually for that, so that was definitely the
- 45:42Speaker 9: most I'd say the most famous one.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Now. I just finished reading a book about art thieves
- 45:46Speaker 1: and a lot of these crimes happen at auction houses.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Have you guys ever dealt with any kind of an
- 45:52Speaker 1: attempted heist?
- 45:55Speaker 5: Thankfully, No, we have had no problem with heist.
- 45:58Speaker 9: We take a security pretty seriously at our locations, though
- 46:02Speaker 9: we have had guns that have been involved in heists.
- 46:05Speaker 5: We've had a revolver that actually a Colt.
- 46:09Speaker 9: It was a fit Special and not a factory fit
- 46:11Speaker 9: special one that he had modified from Clyde Barrow from
- 46:15Speaker 9: the Barrel Gang Bonnie and Clyde. We've had a public
- 46:18Speaker 9: enemy number one who is at Floyd Hamilton. He was
- 46:22Speaker 9: a part of our gang. He helped in the in
- 46:24Speaker 9: the Big Bust when they broke four people out.
- 46:26Speaker 5: Of jail, Pretty boy Floyd.
- 46:28Speaker 9: Yeah, well no, that's a that's a different with with
- 46:31Speaker 9: Floyd Hamilton part of the Barrel Gang. We have had
- 46:35Speaker 9: a gun tied to pretty Boy Floyd in a separate,
- 46:37Speaker 9: separate Tommy Gun related story.
- 46:40Speaker 5: But the big one and I like Bob Dalton, you know, leader.
- 46:42Speaker 9: Of the Dalton Gang, and uh of course leads the
- 46:45Speaker 9: failed Coffee Bill raid. But before the raid they ordered
- 46:48Speaker 9: ten colts, fancy colts, pearl handled, engraved, case hardened like
- 46:53Speaker 9: beautiful guns. And they ordered these ten guns for the
- 46:55Speaker 9: gang to do this, you know, double bank robbery in
- 46:58Speaker 9: one day. And we have Privilegius sell on one of
- 47:01Speaker 9: those class amazing.
- 47:02Speaker 1: All right, now, the guns we're about to see will
- 47:05Speaker 1: be available at the Rock Island Auction happening May second
- 47:08Speaker 1: through May fourth. All right, Joel, what do you have
- 47:10Speaker 1: to show us?
- 47:12Speaker 9: Well, first and foremost brought something for the for the
- 47:15Speaker 9: mountain men, something for the long hunters. This would be
- 47:21Speaker 9: a hawk and rifle. Now, a lot of them it's
- 47:24Speaker 9: you know, quintessential American frontier sort of rifle. A lot
- 47:28Speaker 9: of them get the name of hawk and Rifle. This
- 47:30Speaker 9: one is actually made by Hawkin, Daniel Hawkin. They begin
- 47:36Speaker 9: producing guns around eighteen fifteen. We know this one gates
- 47:39Speaker 9: from about the eighteen fifties because Jacob Guyes Batamuel keeps
- 47:43Speaker 9: making guns and it's marked with his store in that
- 47:45Speaker 9: they founded in Saint Louis. But it just has his name,
- 47:48Speaker 9: So just a quintessential piece of America. This one's the
- 47:53Speaker 9: full stock. A lot of times the half stocks were
- 47:56Speaker 9: more popular despite being more expensive to produce, because they
- 48:00Speaker 9: were a little more labor intensive, So you don't see
- 48:02Speaker 9: the full stocks as often.
- 48:05Speaker 5: But boy, just just.
- 48:06Speaker 9: What a piece from that, you know, from the mountain
- 48:08Speaker 9: man era, from this fur trading era, whether you're a
- 48:10Speaker 9: pioneer explorer, et cetera.
- 48:13Speaker 5: What that might ring overwell with some of the fellers.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you think that gun is going to
- 48:16Speaker 1: sell for?
- 48:18Speaker 9: Well, we have an estimate, I believe on a genuine
- 48:20Speaker 9: Hawken sixty five to ninety five thousand.
- 48:23Speaker 7: Wow.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Okay, what's interested in that price?
- 48:27Speaker 2: Yeah? What's what's the bor on that?
- 48:29Speaker 5: Well?
- 48:30Speaker 9: Sorry, you know the apologies and Jeremiah Johnson, this one's
- 48:32Speaker 9: fifty four gallony.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Aah. Yeah, I was gonna say, I know a guy
- 48:36Speaker 2: who might be interested.
- 48:38Speaker 1: And Randall, did that gun show all up show up
- 48:40Speaker 1: a lot in your coverage of mountain men?
- 48:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the the Hawken is the gun that's
- 48:45Speaker 2: most commonly associated with that era, and it's obviously it's
- 48:49Speaker 2: like probably the most iconic firearms since the Kentucky long Rifle.
- 48:56Speaker 2: What what's interesting in our research is that there's a few,
- 48:59Speaker 2: like very high pro file individuals that had genuine Hawkins.
- 49:03Speaker 2: But you know Jazz, Jim Bridger, oh, what's his.
- 49:08Speaker 9: Name, Hugh Glass, Kit Carson famously of course.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Yep, and and but you know a lot of your
- 49:14Speaker 2: sort of day to day boots on the ground mountain
- 49:18Speaker 2: men were getting by with cheaper guns, you know, but
- 49:23Speaker 2: those those the Hawking is like the legendary piece from
- 49:26Speaker 2: that time.
- 49:27Speaker 1: All right, Joel, what gun do you have next for us?
- 49:31Speaker 9: Well, I know it's been something for the buffalo hunters
- 49:34Speaker 9: in the group. I had a Sharp's last time. This
- 49:37Speaker 9: one's got a couple special different tweaks to it's Sharp's
- 49:42Speaker 9: model eighteen seventy four business model. This one ship's actually
- 49:46Speaker 9: in eighteen seventy eight. So that prime like huge commercial
- 49:50Speaker 9: bison hunting era, you know out there in Montana and
- 49:53Speaker 9: big Sky country or territory. I guess I should say
- 49:57Speaker 9: this is one a very few shipped. Tech the president
- 50:01Speaker 9: of Sharps at the time, so it's a it's a
- 50:04Speaker 9: rare gun. There's all the business models like sixteen hundred made,
- 50:07Speaker 9: so it's a classic gun definitely associated with the with
- 50:10Speaker 9: the bison hunting at the time in the commercial hunting
- 50:13Speaker 9: rare one because of that ship to the president of
- 50:15Speaker 9: the company. But more than that, this gun has won
- 50:18Speaker 9: some awards because of the accessories that it comes with.
- 50:22Speaker 9: It has maintained all these years, not just as kind
- 50:26Speaker 9: of a rare and desirable firearm, but it comes with
- 50:28Speaker 9: the full sort of buffalo hunting kit. There's that rifles
- 50:32Speaker 9: case in a case entirely coded with bison fur. It
- 50:37Speaker 9: comes with the full skinning kit from the field. Oh wow,
- 50:42Speaker 9: in bison for and just like not every shape, every size.
- 50:47Speaker 9: There's things in here that I mean, I think look
- 50:49Speaker 9: like they're going to be for for woodworking. This was one,
- 50:52Speaker 9: but you know it's for sure these things can get
- 50:56Speaker 9: drawn and back to market.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Now what that makes that the business model? And like
- 51:02Speaker 1: what sets it apart from just a regular one of.
- 51:04Speaker 9: Those caliber configuration is so they're set with a I
- 51:10Speaker 9: think it's a twenty eight inch barrel round barrel, although
- 51:13Speaker 9: there are a lot of varieties seen during that time.
- 51:15Speaker 9: It's also produced during a pretty narrow window, so it's
- 51:19Speaker 9: it's I don't want to say it's a collector designation
- 51:21Speaker 9: because it was absolutely an original designation from Sharps for
- 51:25Speaker 9: how they chose to sell it, but basically a configuration
- 51:28Speaker 9: again aimed at sort of that big market you see,
- 51:30Speaker 9: where people wanted accurate guns, reliable guns that could put
- 51:34Speaker 9: a lot of firepower on big animals like an American bison.
- 51:37Speaker 1: And what do you think that gun is going to
- 51:39Speaker 1: sell for?
- 51:40Speaker 5: I have to write them all down.
- 51:41Speaker 9: That one we have estimated actually with all those like
- 51:44Speaker 9: original period accessories fifteen to twenty five thousand, okay, cheap.
- 51:50Speaker 5: Fors with some extra goodies.
- 51:52Speaker 2: No, I hate to be I hate to repeat my question, familiarer.
- 51:55Speaker 2: What's that one chambered in? Is that a fifty? Is
- 51:57Speaker 2: that the big fifty?
- 51:59Speaker 10: Oh?
- 51:59Speaker 2: It's a forty five? Gotcha?
- 52:01Speaker 9: Very great classic yep, and again shipped in eighteen seventy eight,
- 52:05Speaker 9: so it's right in that window.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Now are you working on the Buffalo Hide Hunter's book
- 52:10Speaker 1: right now?
- 52:10Speaker 2: Is this is yeah? Gun?
- 52:12Speaker 1: Very famous in your research?
- 52:13Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah. The Sharps. I mean again, like the Sharps.
- 52:16Speaker 2: If you associate one firearm with that era and that
- 52:19Speaker 2: particular hunt, it's the Sharps and legendary for shooting animals
- 52:24Speaker 2: at distance and putting a big wall up on them.
- 52:29Speaker 1: And what is the third gun you have with you today, Joel.
- 52:34Speaker 9: Well, third one is actually one that's gonna kind of
- 52:36Speaker 9: one of the headliners of the auction. This is a
- 52:38Speaker 9: Winchester eighteen model eighteen seventy three, one of one thousand
- 52:44Speaker 9: that was actually one of three made for the film
- 52:48Speaker 9: Winchester seventy three starring Jimmy Stewart.
- 52:53Speaker 1: That's that gun is a piece of art. He is holding. Now,
- 52:56Speaker 1: how old is this gun? And what do you think
- 52:58Speaker 1: that'll sell for? Is it from eighteen seventy three?
- 53:01Speaker 5: Nope, So that's just a model designation.
- 53:04Speaker 9: There were some original one to one thousands made, like eighteen,
- 53:07Speaker 9: mostly from eighteen seventy five to eighteen ninety three. This
- 53:11Speaker 9: one was manufactured by the company some years later, specifically
- 53:15Speaker 9: to be proper for the movie. It's an original manufacturer
- 53:18Speaker 9: though right at the right at the turn of the century.
- 53:21Speaker 5: That's it.
- 53:21Speaker 9: It is because of its significance to gun collecting, I mean,
- 53:25Speaker 9: the movie, the campaign, the gun itself like changes fine
- 53:31Speaker 9: arms collecting in the United States forever. It's not like
- 53:33Speaker 9: the sole catalyst for it. But to say it's not
- 53:36Speaker 9: a major player would would be a mistake. This's see
- 53:40Speaker 9: what is the estimate on that's about three one hundred
- 53:42Speaker 9: seventy five to three hundred and twenty five thousand dollars.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 53:46Speaker 9: Wow, So based up there right with you know, original
- 53:49Speaker 9: rare one of one thousand Winchesters like these holy grails,
- 53:53Speaker 9: these crown jewels of fine arms collecting. And here you
- 53:56Speaker 9: have the one that's that's on screen. You can look
- 53:57Speaker 9: at the buttstock. There's the plaque on the butt stock
- 54:01Speaker 9: that starts the whole movie, and actually this is that rifle.
- 54:05Speaker 9: There's you know, we have plenty of paperwork coming with
- 54:07Speaker 9: this to show that when that movie opens, this is
- 54:10Speaker 9: the rifle that you see.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Beautiful, that's amazing. Now, I'm not a huge lever gun guy.
- 54:18Speaker 2: I sort of know the origin story and the early models,
- 54:23Speaker 2: and then I'm familiar with what's available to the shooter today.
- 54:27Speaker 2: But could you tell us a little bit about where
- 54:29Speaker 2: the seventy three fits in with sort of the development
- 54:32Speaker 2: of that technology.
- 54:35Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, So.
- 54:36Speaker 9: Of course you have a lot of lever actions dating
- 54:40Speaker 9: to the mid nineteenth century. Of course, the most famous
- 54:43Speaker 9: one as the patents are bought up, is the Henry
- 54:45Speaker 9: rifle that's pre Winchester that's New Haven Arms during the
- 54:50Speaker 9: Civil War era eighteen sixty sixty five.
- 54:53Speaker 5: Winchester of course buys these patents.
- 54:55Speaker 9: A little bit of a drama there with Benjamin Tyler
- 54:57Speaker 9: Henry starts his own company winch Oliver Winchester, a shirt
- 55:01Speaker 9: maker from New York, comes out with the Winchester sixty
- 55:04Speaker 9: six using a lot of those Benjamin Tyler Henry pattens.
- 55:08Speaker 9: His next rifle that he makes is the eighth is
- 55:12Speaker 9: the model eighteen seventy three.
- 55:14Speaker 1: And what do you mean, Joel By, what do you
- 55:16Speaker 1: mean when you say this gun changed gun collecting?
- 55:20Speaker 9: So the movie, I mean they're famous for being the
- 55:23Speaker 9: rare guns, you know, these holy grails. There's only of
- 55:26Speaker 9: the original Winchester one to one thousands. There's like one
- 55:29Speaker 9: hundred and thirty two ever made, and of course just
- 55:33Speaker 9: under half of those are known to exist today. They're
- 55:35Speaker 9: extremely rare, deluxe guns made for a narrow window of time.
- 55:39Speaker 9: People love these with the move and they're kind of
- 55:42Speaker 9: forgotten about. There's a period of time in the twenties
- 55:44Speaker 9: even into the forties where there's some curiosity about them
- 55:47Speaker 9: by known by people who know find a collector of firearms,
- 55:51Speaker 9: but they're not the famous guns.
- 55:53Speaker 5: That we know today.
- 55:54Speaker 9: Well, the movie comes out in nineteen fifty and when
- 55:57Speaker 9: the movie comes out, there's a huge publicity campaign and
- 56:01Speaker 9: this is done kind of headed by Steve Depperman, who
- 56:03Speaker 9: runs an agency in New York and he's a name
- 56:05Speaker 9: collector should know because his campaign is looking for the
- 56:10Speaker 9: original Winchester one on one thousands. They launched this huge campaign,
- 56:14Speaker 9: tens of thousands of posters, not even domestically but also internationally.
- 56:19Speaker 9: They're in gun stores, they're in Winchester dealerships looking for
- 56:23Speaker 9: Winchester one to one thousand rifles, and they don't want them.
- 56:26Speaker 5: They're not taking them. They're like, we're just trying to
- 56:28Speaker 5: document them all and.
- 56:29Speaker 9: If you have one, if you have a Winchester eighteen
- 56:31Speaker 9: seventy three one to one thousand, we'll send you a
- 56:34Speaker 9: Winchester eighteen ninety.
- 56:35Speaker 5: Four deer rifle brand new.
- 56:38Speaker 9: A lot of people are submitting submitting these, But what
- 56:41Speaker 9: it really did, how it changed gun collecting, is it's
- 56:44Speaker 9: introducing people to the concept of rare and desirable firearms.
- 56:48Speaker 9: Gotcha that those firearms are worth money, that those are valuable.
- 56:53Speaker 9: It's teaching them how to identify them, and it's got
- 56:56Speaker 9: them like people actively searching for them, like it's for
- 56:59Speaker 9: quin essential gun collector behaviors, and it's just launching this
- 57:03Speaker 9: on a on a fairly unprecedented scale. And then we
- 57:08Speaker 9: call the fifties sort of this golden age of gun
- 57:10Speaker 9: collecting or of fine arms collecting. And it's largely due
- 57:13Speaker 9: to impart this massive influx of people who are now
- 57:16Speaker 9: looking for rare, desirable guns, of course, starting with the
- 57:19Speaker 9: Winchester eighteen seventy three one to one thousands. But you know, eventually,
- 57:23Speaker 9: you know, colt single action armies are being collected, civil
- 57:26Speaker 9: war arms, revolutionary war arms.
- 57:28Speaker 5: It's just it's it's varied, of course, is whatever people
- 57:30Speaker 5: have an interest in.
- 57:32Speaker 1: And if Randall is interested in one of these guns,
- 57:34Speaker 1: how does he make a bid?
- 57:36Speaker 9: We of course you'd call us. We'll have the catalog
- 57:39Speaker 9: up probably early April or maybe late March. Here the
- 57:43Speaker 9: way we're moving, which is good news. You can hop
- 57:46Speaker 9: on the line. There's all the pictures, the full descriptions, calibers,
- 57:49Speaker 9: any other questions people might have, and it's as easy
- 57:52Speaker 9: as clicking on the website, but of course people want
- 57:54Speaker 9: to come do it in person. These are these big
- 57:56Speaker 9: auctions are premier auctions, they're live events. We built a
- 57:59Speaker 9: new facil oh just about year and a half ago
- 58:01Speaker 9: in Bedford, Texas and it is absolutely outstanding. So come
- 58:05Speaker 9: see him in person, put him in your hands before
- 58:07Speaker 9: you place a bid.
- 58:09Speaker 5: You can do that.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Yeah, don't try to make a heist because they're watching
- 58:12Speaker 1: you closely. All right, We're gonna check in with you
- 58:15Speaker 1: later this year to see what other cool guns you
- 58:17Speaker 1: have at the auction house. Already looking forward to that interview.
- 58:20Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us, Joel Deger, Thanks very much.
- 58:22Speaker 5: You have a real good one, you.
- 58:23Speaker 1: Too, all right. That brings us to the end of
- 58:27Speaker 1: this week's show. Phil, let's get some final feedback from
- 58:30Speaker 1: the chat.
- 58:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Steven asks Spencer any chance he'll be rock hounding
- 58:35Speaker 3: on your trip to Lake Superior. I would love to
- 58:37Speaker 3: see a colloud with agate Dad. I don't know who
- 58:39Speaker 3: agod Dad is, but I maybe I'm assuming you do,
- 58:41Speaker 3: but I don't know if you do or not.
- 58:43Speaker 1: I do not know who Agadad is. I follow a
- 58:45Speaker 1: handful of rock hounding influencers, most of them in the West,
- 58:49Speaker 1: but yes, I do plan to rock hound on that trip.
- 58:53Speaker 1: I'd love to find a Superior ag. I have a few,
- 58:57Speaker 1: but they're ones that I have traded for, so I
- 58:59Speaker 1: don't have any that I have myself found, which makes
- 59:01Speaker 1: them a little more special. So I'm going to attempt
- 59:03Speaker 1: to find one on that trip. I also have my
- 59:06Speaker 1: UV flashlight with me, and walking these shores of Lake
- 59:10Speaker 1: Superior is a great place to bust one of those
- 59:12Speaker 1: out to find some unique rocks. So I'm gonna try
- 59:15Speaker 1: to do it.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Stephen.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Right on, I want to give a shout out to Sarah,
- 59:19Speaker 3: who didn't cheat and was the closest for that dear prop.
- 59:23Speaker 3: She gets twenty five hundred, which which I think was
- 59:26Speaker 3: the closest, even though I think the price was what
- 59:28Speaker 3: almost five forty people. People were really low balling that one. Truly,
- 59:35Speaker 3: you guys can get as deep into this as you
- 59:37Speaker 3: want to. But Jack's he says, I was inspired to
- 59:40Speaker 3: pursue a degree in range management by you all. Any
- 59:42Speaker 3: words of encouragement or advice for someone looking into this
- 59:45Speaker 3: career with the current political situation, what do you got, Randall.
- 59:51Speaker 2: Man, I would just say keep the faith. You know,
- 59:56Speaker 2: we're in a very strange moment right now, but there's
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: always going to be need for people to watch out
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: for our soils and our vegetation and all that habitat
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: out there. And yeah, I don't know that I would
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: make any rash decisions at the moment, as other rash
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: decisions are being made by the powers that be, So
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: keep the faith, Jack, and I appreciate your I appreciate
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: your chosen career path there.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Jack, I went to school for biology, ecology, and evolution.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I'm not using that degree today. And if you don't
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: use your range management degree either, I don't think you
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: would regret going to college for that. You'll be exposed
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: to a lot of fun, interesting things that any outdoorsman
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: would like to know. So good luck, jack Well.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: Said Harrison asked question for the crew, what do you
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: think of Western states moving to having people purchase a
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: tag to shed hunt and should Montana follow suit?
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Thanks? Well hereson, I would say I typically trust the
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: folks making those decisions. If they think you need a
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: tag to either track how many people are doing it
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: or to limit the amount of folks that are like
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: pushing around animals during a very vulnerable time, I'm okay
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: with it. I also don't know those tag prices, but
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I assume it's less than thirty thirty bucks. As outdoorsmen,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: we spend a lot of dumb money on a lot
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: of dumb things. That thirty dollars tag, which is probably
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: on the expensive side of what these Western states are charging,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: is money well spent. What do you guys think?
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's an activity that, when done I
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: guess carelessly, has a pretty significant impact on the resource.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: And I would support our wildlife managers having all the
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: information that they can to sort of understand better what
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: that impact is and what steps we can take to
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: make it more wildlife friendly because again, deer elk getting
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: pushed around when winter range is a serious source of mortality.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And I think like shed hunting in the West is
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: probably more popular now than it's ever been.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's one of those things like on a
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: limited basis it might not have a huge impact, but
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: as it's grown in popularity, it certainly is making its
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: it's you know, impact on the resource.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Corey, when you were in your shed hunting heyday, would
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you scoff at a thirty dollars license if you needed
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: to buy one to do that?
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: No, No, I wouldn't. I'd pay that in a heartbeat Yeah,
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: just I think along the lines of what you mentioned,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: I think anything that becomes a little overcrowded or overpopular
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: has to be regulated somehow.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: And yeah, but I will say probably the worst defenders
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: are the guys that are going to go out and
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: not buy the tag, right Yeah. Yeah, people like the
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: people that are the people that are kind of renegade
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: shed hunters and like chasing down bowls and stuff. They're
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: probably not going to follow the rules. So it's a
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: double edged sword. I think always like supporting our agencies
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: and providing them with information and data is a good thing.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I don't think they're out to get you when they
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: make you buy one of these licenses to go shut on,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: So I just trust that they're doing it for the
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: good of the critters and the good of the resource.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: I don't think Montana's anywhere near having one, but I'm
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: sure at some point it will happen.
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: Bill.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: What else, yet, Let's.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Do one more? This is probably the most important one.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Kevin asks what new hair product is Randall using.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Oh, I believe it's called spit. Yeah, a little water
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: little comb. I did get a I don't even know
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: what you call it. It's like a little tub of stuff.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: I think it's made by Old spice. But they have
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: like five different words for things you put in your hair.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Now you know, there's gels, there's bombs. Yes, I don't know.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: I don't know. I had to do something. I had
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: to do something because otherwise it's just you know.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Did we get an answer there as to what you're
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: putting in your hair old spice? Okay, there you go.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: That brings us to the end of the show. Thanks
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: for watching, Thanks for listening. We'll see you back here
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: in a week.
