- 0:00Whenever we try to understand something, we are met with
- 0:04various types of inherent biases that skew the determinations we
- 0:09make. Not only our our senses, our
- 0:13perceptions, and our thoughts subject to various forms of
- 0:16filtering, but they are also skewed by our past experience,
- 0:22the fact that our minds fill in missing data based on what we
- 0:26expect to see, and we interpret everything through the filter of
- 0:30our memories, our emotional framework, and our contextual
- 0:35relationship to what is being perceived.
- 0:38In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle
- 0:42adds another layer to the entire process, even beyond our
- 0:47inherent biases, namely that the very fact of observation changes
- 0:54what is being observed in order to reach the truth of anything.
- 0:59We therefore need to undertake considerable efforts to 1st
- 1:03understand what kind of biases and filters we are employing in
- 1:07our perception, and 2nd work to minimize their impact on the
- 1:12resulting analysis and conclusions we draw.
- 1:16For instance, if we desire a certain outcome or adhere to a
- 1:21certain point of view, we will tend to interpret what we see
- 1:25based on those filters. We either get a confirmation of
- 1:29what we already believe, or we get the opposite of it and we
- 1:33then react with a rejection, an interpretation that fits our
- 1:38preconceived notions. Our senses are subject to being
- 1:43misled. What we see, what we hear, what
- 1:47we feel are all partial and are also subject to manipulation
- 1:54based on on our position as an observer in relation to the
- 1:57object of our perception, as well as through careful
- 2:01tailoring of information by those seeking to influence our
- 2:05perceptions or due to innocent but nevertheless inaccurate
- 2:10factual data. It is not just a matter of
- 2:14factual data, however. We have our own expectations.
- 2:19Ideas and preconceived notions that go into how we interpret
- 2:23and respond to things. Then we overlay our mental
- 2:27process, our emotional needs, our experience and memory, and
- 2:32our training and education over the perceptions.
- 2:37Desires play a rather large role in how we respond to things,
- 2:41whether we are attracted or repulsed, whether we are
- 2:45responding out of fear or antipathy or some kind of
- 2:49chemistry of attraction. The idea then, in order to
- 2:54approach a more unbiased view of the world and the situations
- 2:57that we experience, is to find ways to systematically abstract
- 3:02ourselves from this entire baggage of the external ego,
- 3:06personality and the limitations of the external physical, vital
- 3:11emotional and mental being. The practice of shifting to the
- 3:16standpoint of the witness consciousness is an important
- 3:20part of this process, so that we can identify and minimize the
- 3:25influence of these factors on our perceptions of the reality
- 3:29that we interact with. The Mother notes quote.
- 3:35To be perfectly sincere, it is indispensable not to have any
- 3:38preference, any desire, any attraction, any dislike, any
- 3:44sympathy or antipathy, any attachment, any repulsion.
- 3:49One must have a total integral vision of things in which
- 3:54everything is in its place and one has the same attitude
- 3:58towards all things, the attitude of true vision.
- 4:03This program is obviously very difficult for a human being to
- 4:06realize. Unless he has decided to
- 4:09divinize himself. It seems almost impossible that
- 4:13he could be free from all these contraries within him.
- 4:16And yet, so long as one carries them in himself, 1 cannot be
- 4:22perfectly sincere. Automatically the mental, the
- 4:26vital, and even the physical working is falsified.
- 4:31I am emphasizing the physical, for even the working of the
- 4:34senses is warped. 1 does not see, hear, taste, feel things as
- 4:41they are in reality. As long as one has a preference,
- 4:45so long as there are things which please you and others
- 4:48which don't, so long as you are attracted by certain things and
- 4:53repulsed by others, you cannot see things in their reality.
- 4:57You see them through your reaction, your preference or
- 5:02your repulsion. The senses are instruments which
- 5:05get out of order in the same as sensations, feelings and
- 5:10thoughts. Therefore, to be sure of what
- 5:14you see, what you feel, what you experience and think, you must
- 5:19have a complete detachment, and this is obviously not an easy
- 5:23task. But until then, your perception
- 5:28cannot be wholly true, and so it is not sincere.
