- 0:00Speaker 1: Straight to breaking news, the very latest on that Middle
- 0:03Speaker 1: East crisis between Iran and Israel. Donald Trump has just
- 0:07Speaker 1: posted on social media. There it is on your screen.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We now have complete and total control of the skies
- 0:13Speaker 1: over Iran. Iran had good sky trackers and other defensive
- 0:17Speaker 1: equipment and plenty of it. But it doesn't compare to
- 0:20Speaker 1: American made, conceived and manufactured stuff. Nobody does it better
- 0:25Speaker 1: than good old USA. He concludes in that post, Let's
- 0:29Speaker 1: speak to our diplomatic Corsponant James Landale, he's there at
- 0:32Speaker 1: the G seven gathering, and also our North America correspond
- 0:36Speaker 1: Nomi Igbao, she's there live for us at the White House.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So Nomia, let me start with you and that post.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And it is the first word of that post that
- 0:45Speaker 1: is getting a lot of attention. He says, we now
- 0:48Speaker 1: have complete and total control of the skies. It underlines
- 0:52Speaker 1: how intertwined the US and Israel are on this.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It does, but it doesn't give any more clarity on
- 1:01Speaker 2: what President Trump plans to do next. What he's doing
- 1:05Speaker 2: there is flexing US might. But does this now mean
- 1:10Speaker 2: that the US is going to get all out involved
- 1:14Speaker 2: with Israel and strike or is it a scare tactic
- 1:18Speaker 2: to try and get Iran around the negotiating table. Now
- 1:22Speaker 2: we don't even know if that is still something that
- 1:26Speaker 2: they are planning for. We know that they were meant
- 1:28Speaker 2: to be the six rounder talks between Iran and the
- 1:31Speaker 2: US when it comes to nuclear on Sunday. That's now
- 1:34Speaker 2: been stopped, But there are some suggestions that President Trump
- 1:38Speaker 2: would still want Steve wick Coff's Middle East envoy and
- 1:41Speaker 2: the Vice President Jadvans to be involved in those talks.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And speaking of the Vice President JD Vans, he's put
- 1:47Speaker 2: out a very long post on x in which he
- 1:51Speaker 2: has outlined the concerns that the Trump administration has, but
- 1:56Speaker 2: he's also referred to just if I can just pick
- 1:58Speaker 2: out the bit that he said. He says, of course,
- 2:01Speaker 2: people are right to be worried about foreign entanglement after
- 2:03Speaker 2: the last twenty five years of idiotic foreign policy. And
- 2:07Speaker 2: that's obviously speaking or appealing to the base, the base
- 2:11Speaker 2: that's voted for Trump and millions of others on his
- 2:15Speaker 2: No Wars platform. But does what does this mean going forward?
- 2:20Speaker 2: I don't think we're any clearer on what the US
- 2:23Speaker 2: plans to do next when it comes to what's happening
- 2:27Speaker 2: in Iran.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Let's cross to the G seven and to James, and
- 2:31Speaker 1: of course Donald Trump left that gathering early. In terms
- 2:35Speaker 1: of all of those other issues that the gathering wanted
- 2:39Speaker 1: to discuss, whether it was tariffs and trade, whether it
- 2:43Speaker 1: was the Middle East directly with Donald Trump or President
- 2:46Speaker 1: Zelenski on Ukraine. Give me a sense of the mood
- 2:51Speaker 1: where you.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Are, well, this is like a birthday party where the
- 2:58Speaker 3: birthday party boy has on home. Donald Trump turned seventy
- 3:01Speaker 3: nine at the weekend, and there are a lot of
- 3:03Speaker 3: leaders here, all dressed up, nowhere to go. If you
- 3:07Speaker 3: think about it, on the second day of something like this,
- 3:09Speaker 3: you get all the guests, the non G seven leaders
- 3:12Speaker 3: who've come, the leaders of India, Brazil, South Korea and
- 3:16Speaker 3: elsewhere have all come here to have conversations not just
- 3:20Speaker 3: with each other and other world leaders, but with Donald Trump.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And you mentioned President Zelenski here of course is the
- 3:26Speaker 3: central one of that because these events matter, these summits,
- 3:30Speaker 3: because they are a chance for world leaders to sit
- 3:33Speaker 3: down face to face with Donald Trump, to actually shape
- 3:35Speaker 3: some of his thinking, to actually have a conversation that
- 3:38Speaker 3: can get things into his head that doesn't have to
- 3:41Speaker 3: go through other advisors and mediators, and they were all
- 3:45Speaker 3: hoping not just to shape some of his thinking on Iran,
- 3:47Speaker 3: but also his thinking on Ukraine and specifically to try
- 3:52Speaker 3: and put more pressure on Russia.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And although the.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Canadians and the Europeans and others are announcing some more
- 3:58Speaker 3: sanctions today and there will be conversations with President Zelenski,
- 4:03Speaker 3: Donald Trump left last night making absolutely clear that he
- 4:06Speaker 3: is very skeptical of him putting more sanctions on Russia
- 4:09Speaker 3: because he said it damages the United States economy. So
- 4:13Speaker 3: I think there's a sense of deflation here. I think
- 4:15Speaker 3: there's a sense also, as Nomi was saying, continued puzzlement
- 4:19Speaker 3: and amusement about precisely what the President intends to do
- 4:24Speaker 3: over Israel in the run, because the messaging is confused
- 4:27Speaker 3: and it is mixed.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Noman, let me come back to you, because we were
- 4:31Speaker 1: talking an hour or so ago about that exchange on
- 4:34Speaker 1: Air Force one with a CBS correspondent to who put
- 4:37Speaker 1: to the President that his own national intelligence director had
- 4:41Speaker 1: said that Iran wasn't heading towards creating a nuclear device,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and he said, I don't care what she said. I
- 4:47Speaker 1: think they were very close. So there was a very
- 4:52Speaker 1: very interesting exchange there, and it begs the question who
- 4:56Speaker 1: is Donald Trump depending on in terms of his intelligenced
- 5:01Speaker 1: advice here.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I think it was an extraordinary comment by President Trump,
- 5:08Speaker 2: especially given that Tulsy Gabbard is part of his bass,
- 5:11Speaker 2: so to speak. In his second term, Donald Trump is
- 5:14Speaker 2: very much surrounded by those who subscribe to his MAGA
- 5:18Speaker 2: Make America Great Again belief, which does involve no wars
- 5:21Speaker 2: by the way, unlike his first term where he had
- 5:25Speaker 2: more establishment politicians as he would see it, but he's
- 5:28Speaker 2: dismissed what she clearly said earlier in the year that yes,
- 5:32Speaker 2: there have been constant suggestions, certainly by the Israeli Prime
- 5:35Speaker 2: Minister Benjaminetta and Yahoo, that Iran is imminently about to
- 5:40Speaker 2: have a nuclear weapon, but none of that has ever
- 5:42Speaker 2: come to fruition, None of that has ever been true,
- 5:45Speaker 2: leading to a lot of criticism by certainly those who
- 5:47Speaker 2: don't want any wars in the Middle East or certainly
- 5:50Speaker 2: want the US to be involved. That is this similar
- 5:52Speaker 2: to when there were claims of weapons of mass destruction
- 5:55Speaker 2: in Iraq with Saddam Mussin, for example, And so where
- 5:58Speaker 2: he's getting that from? It could be from the Israeli
- 6:02Speaker 2: Prime Minister Benjaminettainnahu himself, but we're not quite sure. But
- 6:07Speaker 2: it does underline that Donald Trump does believe that that
- 6:11Speaker 2: Iran is a problem, and he did say that he
- 6:14Speaker 2: wanted something bigger than a ceasefire last night. What does
- 6:18Speaker 2: that mean. We know that he has said that he
- 6:20Speaker 2: Iran can't have nuclear weapon, But the only way that
- 6:23Speaker 2: that could happen is if America does get involved, physically
- 6:28Speaker 2: involved in what's happening in the Middle East. And again,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, as we were saying an hour ago, if
- 6:33Speaker 2: Donald Trump does make that move, and there's no indication
- 6:35Speaker 2: that he will, that could be hugely legacy defining for him,
- 6:40Speaker 2: given that the people who voted him into office millions
- 6:43Speaker 2: and millions of votes across this country had done so
- 6:46Speaker 2: largely because of his no wars mantra.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Well, not mere very interestingly, as you're speaking, the Reuters
- 6:52Speaker 1: news agency is reporting that the US military is moving
- 6:55Speaker 1: fighter jets to the Middle East and extending deployments of
- 6:59Speaker 1: warplanes to bolster defenses amid this Israeli around conflict. That
- 7:04Speaker 1: has come from US officials speaking to Reuter's. So again
- 7:08Speaker 1: we wait to see any of the next moves from
- 7:11Speaker 1: the White House. Let's go back to the GeV seven
- 7:13Speaker 1: and James and aside from what is going on in
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Middle East, let me come back to trade and tarifs.
- 7:20Speaker 1: We were listening there to Sakiir Starmer talking about the
- 7:23Speaker 1: one deal that has finally got over the line. Did
- 7:27Speaker 1: anyone else sitting around the table there with Donald Trump?
- 7:30Speaker 1: But yesterday so many different countries where there are tariffs imposed,
- 7:34Speaker 1: did anybody feel they had made progress?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Look at these events, are not going to have individual
- 7:42Speaker 3: negotiations over the Minu shie and the precise nature of
- 7:46Speaker 3: those conversations, because it's not the format that these conversations
- 7:50Speaker 3: have had in I know, the Japanese leader, the new
- 7:53Speaker 3: Prime Minister, has been very keen to make sure that
- 7:55Speaker 3: he can make progress on a US Japan deal on tariffs.
- 8:00Speaker 3: So there have conversations taking place about that. The way
- 8:03Speaker 3: the debate is shaped here is not about precise numbers,
- 8:06Speaker 3: but it's essentially about getting arguments across to the American side.
- 8:10Speaker 3: So you'll have world leaders saying, look, mister Trump, if
- 8:13Speaker 3: you wish us to join you in dealing with the
- 8:17Speaker 3: challenges from countries like China. Well, that's easier if our
- 8:21Speaker 3: economies are flourishing, and not if you're damaging them. In
- 8:24Speaker 3: the same way, the Europeans get the argument across, saying, look,
- 8:27Speaker 3: we accept that we have to spend more on our
- 8:30Speaker 3: own defense, that we've been free riding on the Americans
- 8:33Speaker 3: for many, many years on this, but we cannot do that.
- 8:36Speaker 3: We cannot spend more on defense if our economies are
- 8:39Speaker 3: being hit by American tariffs. In other words, that's the
- 8:42Speaker 3: nature the tone of the debate that's had about trade
- 8:44Speaker 3: and tariffs here, rather than the minute of specific individual
- 8:49Speaker 3: tariff rates and what may or may not happen. But
- 8:51Speaker 3: as I say, that is a conversation that has been
- 8:53Speaker 3: cut short because Donald Trump is no longer here, so
- 8:57Speaker 3: other leaders here who have not yet had the chance
- 8:59Speaker 3: to have that conversation with him. I'm going to have
- 9:02Speaker 3: to find another time for that to take place.
- 9:05Speaker 1: James Landale there at the G seven, thank you, and
- 9:08Speaker 1: thanks to Nami Igba Lyfross at the White House
